Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily A Badi here you are listening to
- 0:24Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:28Speaker 2: This week.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I feel like it's been such a gosh chaotic time
- 0:35Speaker 1: as I've been prepping because I am about to really
- 0:39Speaker 1: kick off a whirlwind of being in and out of
- 0:42Speaker 1: New York. I'm headed to Budapest as you listen to this,
- 0:46Speaker 1: for the World Championships of Track and Field. I am
- 0:50Speaker 1: elited if you happen to be listening to this and
- 0:53Speaker 1: you will be in Budapest as well. I'm leading a
- 0:55Speaker 1: run on Sunday. I'm a little bit the details in
- 0:59Speaker 1: the show notes to this episode. I would love to
- 1:02Speaker 1: see you there. But for the rest of you, which
- 1:04Speaker 1: is most of you, I want to talk to you
- 1:07Speaker 1: about looking at your surroundings a little more carefully. I
- 1:12Speaker 1: this week was sitting at my desk, and as you
- 1:15Speaker 1: know when I record, I have a bookshelf in back
- 1:18Speaker 1: of me. And on that bookshelf there are a fair
- 1:20Speaker 1: amount of books that I have started and admittedly not finished.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And I interviewed for the show this week Kelly and
- 1:29Speaker 1: Juliette Starrett, and Kelly has a chapter in Tim Ferris's
- 1:34Speaker 1: book Tools of Titans, All about mobility, which is his specialty.
- 1:38Speaker 2: He is a doctor of physical therapy.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We talked all about mobility in the episode that went
- 1:43Speaker 1: line of on Wednesday, So I highly encourage you to
- 1:45Speaker 1: check it out.
- 1:46Speaker 2: But I haven't picked up Ferris's book, which.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I own, in probably years, and so I made the
- 1:53Speaker 1: decision after talking to Kelly, to not only go read
- 1:56Speaker 1: his chapter, but then start to page through this book.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And if you've never Tools of Titans, it is a large,
- 2:03Speaker 1: large book. I'm literally paging through it as I'm talking
- 2:06Speaker 1: about it right now. There are basically seven hundred pages
- 2:09Speaker 1: in this book. And the premise of the book is
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's all tactics and habits and routines from different people
- 2:16Speaker 1: that you've likely heard of before. Icons, world class performers, billionaires.
- 2:23Speaker 1: People in here including Brene Brown, Seth Godin, Jamie Fox,
- 2:28Speaker 1: Joe Desina wim Hoff, Gabby Reese, you get the picture.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And as I was sitting here paging through this book
- 2:35Speaker 1: the other day, I stumbled on an exert from Sofia Amarusso,
- 2:39Speaker 1: who you may know from Girl Boss fame. She also
- 2:43Speaker 1: was the founder of Nasty Gal, and she once told
- 2:46Speaker 1: Tim that she likes to make promises that she's not
- 2:49Speaker 1: sure that she can keep, and then figure out how
- 2:51Speaker 1: to keep them. And I read that and I realized
- 2:54Speaker 1: that I relate to that so much. Some of the
- 2:59Speaker 1: most challenging moments in my time over the last five
- 3:03Speaker 1: years of building Hurdle and figuring this all out as
- 3:06Speaker 1: I go have happened because I just said one day
- 3:09Speaker 1: that I was going to stop worrying about having all
- 3:11Speaker 1: of the right answers and begin beginning. Is frightening, right,
- 3:16Speaker 1: But when the show went from bi weekly to weekly,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it wasn't like I had a ton of inventory. It
- 3:25Speaker 1: was more like, Okay, I know that I am in
- 3:28Speaker 1: a state of mind, a place, the position to get
- 3:31Speaker 1: it done. And so I knew I had the capability
- 3:35Speaker 1: and the only thing that was stopping me was me.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So one day I put it out into the world
- 3:41Speaker 1: and I said, next week, Hurdle is going to come
- 3:44Speaker 1: out on Monday, and the following week it's also going
- 3:47Speaker 1: to come out on Monday, and the next Monday and
- 3:49Speaker 1: the next Monday.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And before I knew it, that cadence that I.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Had given to all of you, that reasonable expectation of
- 3:57Speaker 1: when you could expect to see content from me I
- 4:00Speaker 1: knew I didn't want to let you down, and so
- 4:02Speaker 1: reading this viewpoint that sometimes I like to make promises
- 4:06Speaker 1: that I'm not sure that I can keep, but I
- 4:07Speaker 1: know that I'm the kind of person that won't let
- 4:09Speaker 1: people down. Right, I can know this to be true
- 4:14Speaker 1: and know that I don't have all the answers and
- 4:16Speaker 1: know that I will figure out a way to do
- 4:19Speaker 1: the thing that I have my mindset to, and it
- 4:23Speaker 1: brings me into my body right now as there are
- 4:25Speaker 1: some things within work, especially that I don't have all
- 4:30Speaker 1: of the tricks and tools that I might need to
- 4:33Speaker 1: get to these different milestones that I am seeking, these
- 4:36Speaker 1: different goals that I have in this moment. But what
- 4:40Speaker 1: I can do is trust my worth, trust my value,
- 4:44Speaker 1: write down the things that I know to be fact,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and by reading these things, seeing them in front of me,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I can feel more empowered to chase my big goals
- 4:53Speaker 1: despite not having all of the answers.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I really needed to read that this week.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I really needed to be remind I did of my
- 5:00Speaker 1: own big potential and know that every time I've jumped
- 5:04Speaker 1: without the answers before, it's worked out just fine. My
- 5:08Speaker 1: question for you this week, what do you want to
- 5:11Speaker 1: put yourself out there for what's one thing in your
- 5:14Speaker 1: life right now that you are standing in your own
- 5:17Speaker 1: way from going after for probably no reason really at all.
- 5:22Speaker 1: One is one thing that you're after? And why do
- 5:25Speaker 1: you think you're holding yourself back? And now a listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I follow you on Instagram and I see that you're
- 5:31Speaker 1: always switching up your sneakers.
- 5:33Speaker 2: What would you say that you're wearing the most right now?
- 5:35Speaker 2: And why do you like it?
- 5:36Speaker 1: I do get the opportunity to try a lot of
- 5:38Speaker 1: sneakers this week, specifically, I am going to I'm going
- 5:42Speaker 1: to go.
- 5:43Speaker 2: With the on Cloud Monster. It came out last year.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I've been wearing it for everything from base mileage, super
- 5:49Speaker 1: easy runs to some quicker stuff actually just the other day,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I think that the two things I like about
- 5:57Speaker 1: it the most. One is it's a high cush I
- 6:00Speaker 1: really love the way that feels.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And two, I actually really.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Appreciate the thin tongue and the upper My feet gets
- 6:07Speaker 1: so so hot in the summer and right now it
- 6:10Speaker 1: has been a real feel of way too high over
- 6:14Speaker 1: the last week or so in New York, So I
- 6:17Speaker 1: would say it's a combo of both of those things.
- 6:19Speaker 1: A lot of cushion, A thin upper that feels really comfortable,
- 6:22Speaker 1: lets my feet breathe, and keeps me good to go.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with hurdle over on social
