Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back, everyone. Today you get to hear about
- 0:03Tina's latest Maj. purchases. Little hint it involves dice,
- 0:07birds and bunnies. Any guesses?
- 0:10There's also a fun facts section about us and we review the big
- 0:13card, what we like about it, and what we don't like about it.
- 0:16Here we go. Welcome to the little house.
- 0:21We're four sisters. We learned a new.
- 0:25Game we all. Love.
- 0:26It and we hope you feel the same, so come on in.
- 0:35Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Little House of Maj.
- 0:38Hi. I'm Lisa.
- 0:41I'm Tina. I'm Amy.
- 0:42I'm Teresa. And we're the little House of
- 0:45Maj. We're so happy you came back.
- 0:47Episode 5. We're ready to go.
- 0:49Tina, you we were chit chatting before we were recording and you
- 0:54said that you bought something new.
- 0:56She's always buying something I do.
- 0:58No, I bought the cutest little. Trinket for the.
- 1:01Dice on the table. It's just this little trinket.
- 1:04It's a trinket box. It's a bird.
- 1:06It's like a little, I think it's a Sparrow, but it's bedazzled.
- 1:09I got it on Amazon. How big is it?
- 1:12So is it ceramic? It's like a ceramic little bird.
- 1:14Kind of, I guess. And it opens up and you put your
- 1:17dice in it and then you can pass it around.
- 1:19I'm looking at it right now. I wish you could.
- 1:21See it? It's pictures, so it's.
- 1:22Literally the shape of a bird. It's a bird and you open it.
- 1:25Up it's a. Vessel to hold your.
- 1:27It's a dice vessel, it. Could also be a pill box for a
- 1:2995 year old. Well, it does kind of give old
- 1:34person vibes, but it's. Horrible.
- 1:37When do you need a? Do you need something to hold
- 1:39your dice? Does it get in the way of the
- 1:42room for snack? No, it's.
- 1:43Little I'm concerned. You guys, you cannot simply pass
- 1:47the dice around. You must have a vessel.
- 1:49For your dice. You need a.
- 1:51You need to have a little. A little it is adorable or
- 1:54looking at a picture of it, it is very cute.
- 1:57Well, and I'll tell you this could be a collector's item so
- 2:00#1. Sorts of different ones.
- 2:02So I am going to get one because, I mean, I have very
- 2:07plain dice and it's embarrassing and I'm looking at the options.
- 2:11There's a blue Jay, there's a lot of different other birds.
- 2:15There's a gold. One, there's this.
- 2:16Awesome one. That's a Peacock.
- 2:18But from the review bird bam. I know, but the reviews I hear
- 2:21that the dice don't fit well in the.
- 2:24So you know what we're going to when this episode comes out, we
- 2:26are going to put a picture on Instagram and Facebook.
- 2:29If you're wondering what the heck we're talking about because
- 2:31I have never seen anything like this.
- 2:33I haven't. Heard I've never even heard of a
- 2:34dice holder of any kind. Well, and there's different.
- 2:36I'm really tempted to get matching ones for different
- 2:39sets. I'm going to collect them all.
- 2:42I'm going to have. I'm going to collect them all.
- 2:43You can do a review. We can do a review a flock.
- 2:46A flock A. Little bit the best perfect.
- 2:49Anyway, that's that was my. New thing, Amy, Speaking of you,
- 2:51you have had a few, a big week, few big weeks in your life.
- 2:57Yes, we are moving. So there is house buying and
- 3:01selling that has occurred the last couple weeks.
- 3:03I have walked through the house. We have not moved in yet and
- 3:08thought where Yeah are we going to play my?
- 3:11Is there a mage room? What are you?
- 3:13Going to do. I mean, it's not, it's tricky
- 3:17guys, you get. A lot of rooms in that house.
- 3:18You can. You can but like commandeer one
- 3:21for the Maj. but I. Don't really want a permanent
- 3:23spot. Like that's a big commitment.
- 3:26Yeah, to actually have a permanent spot.
- 3:28And I did think I'm like, you know what, it's the little House
- 3:31of Maj. We play in the house and you
- 3:33know, that's the. Well, we do, yeah, our recording
- 3:35studios in our little house and we do play in there a lot, but
- 3:38sometimes we play but. Other people but that bar in the
- 3:41basement. Think of the snack assortment.
- 3:44Snack potential is out of this world.
- 3:47It's fantastic. Anyway, so that's.
- 3:48Exciting, very exciting. More to correct.
- 3:51Yeah, more to correct speaking. Well, we'll just wrap this up a
- 3:54little bit here. Speaking of new items, Tina, you
- 3:57got a new mat that I think really encapsulates one of your
- 4:00passions in life. I've got OK, so again, I know
- 4:05we've touched on this before. I have tons of tiles, I have way
- 4:07too many mats and I just got this mat.
- 4:10It's gorgeous, unnecessary mat, but.
- 4:11They're all unnecessary. It's it's this cute.
- 4:14I'm sure a lot of you have seen it.
- 4:15It's this cute mat with bunnies playing tennis because I'm a I'm
- 4:20a avid tennis fan. I play a lot of tennis.
- 4:24It's. Adorable, but it has nothing to
- 4:26do with mahjong. It's a mahjong.
- 4:27Mat Tina is a big tennis player. I have seen her play tennis many
- 4:32times I've played against her and let's just say the intensity
- 4:37and passion that she brings to the game of mahjong is
- 4:39translated into her tennis game. So.
- 4:43I'm a little competitive. Question.
- 4:45I respect that. Which game are you more
- 4:48competitive in, Mahjong or tennis?
- 4:52That's a really good question. Well, first of all, it's totally
- 4:54different because mahjong. I don't expect to win all the
- 4:58time like that. That would be insane.
- 5:00I don't like losing when I play tennis.
- 5:02Of course I. That's what I said.
- 5:03Of course you lose. But it bothers me more to lose
- 5:06in tennis than it does in mahjong.
- 5:08Because mahjong, you're gonna lose, right?
- 5:10There's more luck in mahjong. To me, it's not all that's.
- 5:13Right. I'm a lot more intense with
- 5:15tennis than I am with mahjong, which kind of might be a
- 5:18frightening thing too. So Teresa, yes, we're just
- 5:21sharing so many. We're sharing about fun facts
- 5:23horseback riding. Oh yes, when you competed, yes,
- 5:26Which is more I think I know the answer to.
- 5:29This Well, let's just say I competed in the sport of
- 5:33eventing, which is very intense and takes a lot of work and
- 5:37practice. And yes, I was a lot more
- 5:39passionate about that. There's no snacks and eventing
- 5:43so I do like mahjong better. You did.
- 5:45Like feeding the horse carrots though, you did feel good about.
- 5:48That loves carrots anyway. No, I was more passionate about
- 5:51that. To me, again, as I've said all
- 5:53along, mahjong is about fun. It's about hanging with my
- 5:57sisters, having a good. Time and winning so I'm kidding
- 6:01so. Kidding.
- 6:02No pressure on it. Amy, you've mentioned a few
- 6:05times about your analytical. Really.
- 6:07Calculating the probabilities. I don't know that you want to
- 6:10share what you do for work, but what?
- 6:12What do you feel like uses the most brainpower for you?
- 6:16I would say mahjong is up there. It's up there.
- 6:21There is the combination of calculating the probability
- 6:26based on what tiles have been discarded.
- 6:29There's statistics. Involved.
- 6:30The lines as well as. That was me snoring.
- 6:33What what I am impressed with is people who can quickly make a
- 6:38decision. Oh boy, me too.
- 6:40Because I am not there yet. Me neither.
- 6:42And then I doubt myself. And then I have regrets.
- 6:45One thing you do, you're very stealthy.
- 6:47You don't give a lot of way away when you play.
- 6:50She has a. Poker Face.
- 6:51We're like all, she said, and she says like, what the heck,
- 6:54Where did that come from? Yeah.
- 6:56She has a good poker face, not like me.
- 6:58I have got to work on my chitter chatter giving away too much, I
- 7:02think sometimes. I don't realize it, but Amy,
- 7:04you're really good about. Yeah.
- 7:05You're very. Excellent.
- 7:06It it really is just a matter of I can only focus on one thing
- 7:10and I pretty much zone everything else out so.
- 7:14You know. It's not.
- 7:15A skill, yeah, society made. Star Wars tiles.
- 7:18Star Trek *. Trek I'm.
- 7:20Sorry. Oh.
- 7:23My. God, Star Trek I'm embarrassed
- 7:26for. You OK?
- 7:27I'm. So embarrassed.
- 7:28I'm not embarrassed for you. Not no staying.
- 7:33You want to talk about a fight? OK, I'm thinking about stepping
- 7:37away right now. I'm.
- 7:38Sorry, deep breath starts. It needs a moment.
- 7:40But. Tina.
- 7:42I'm sorry, I'm sorry. OK, listen, we got to keep, we
- 7:45got to think we better move on because there's.
- 7:46We're going to. Move on.
- 7:48One of the things that we want to talk about.
- 7:50Today. This is not going to end well,
- 7:52everybody. One of the things we wanted to
- 7:54talk about was the card now, not the normal What's the name of
- 7:59the? Official card.
- 8:01I can't remember to save my. Life, 2020. 6 But we all know
- 8:04that there are other cards out there.
- 8:07One of the ones that we have played with a little bit is
- 8:09called the Big Card that we just wanted to quickly talk about how
- 8:13it's different, what we like about it, what we don't like
- 8:15about it. It's made by I Love Maj.
- 8:19It's made by. The Maj.
- 8:21Online. Here's the thing I'm going to
- 8:23tell right off the bat when people talk about the big card,
- 8:26I was confused from day one because the big card I thought
- 8:30was the big version of the American National League card.
- 8:35Like it was just physically bigger because I didn't put it
- 8:38together. But then when I saw this, well,
- 8:40it is slightly physically bigger.
- 8:42It's the one everybody that is purple and pink and says but
- 8:46it's. Completely different it is.
- 8:48Correct. But I think there was confusion.
- 8:50There was confusion for me. Maybe I'm the only.
- 8:51One funny that you thought that. Again, it is not the official
- 8:55card. It is stated all over.
- 8:56It is not used for tournament play.
- 8:59It is not official. Just for fun.
- 9:01So what? Who cares?
- 9:02You know, it's just a fun. It's a fun thing.
- 9:04A different card, I thought. So first of all, where do you
- 9:08buy the card? I I don't even know because Amy,
- 9:10I think you bought this for me. Where did you get it?
- 9:12I think it's just a website for. Mahjongline.
- 9:15There's a big. Card.com.
- 9:16I don't remember, but just online.
- 9:18Yeah, you just bought it. Very easy.
- 9:20And so just real quickly for those of you who've never seen
- 9:23it, the sections, there's a lot of similarities.
- 9:25There's really two different sections that are kind of
- 9:28unusual. 1 is called mad math and one is called big brain and
- 9:32they have completely different assortment combinations of lines
- 9:36that really you've never seen before.
- 9:37There's other sections 135792468 very similar as.
- 9:42Consecutive numbers, yeah. Right, here's the thing that I
- 9:45liked about it and we can kind of do a little round Robin.
- 9:48I like that there's not as many pair options cause to me, some
- 9:52of I especially I think in the 2026 card, it kind of rules out
- 9:56a lot of the lines if you don't already have them.
- 9:58So for me, that's one of the things I like about it.
- 10:01Anybody else have? Thoughts.
- 10:02It's easier I think. That's why I.
- 10:05Like it? I mean, no, I think.
- 10:06It is. There's more pongs.
- 10:08You know what I like about it? Random.
- 10:10It's waterproof, it's laminated, and when Lee drives me my Aqua
- 10:15Majmat, we can use them in the pool.
- 10:18Anyway, there you go. So I have a couple of thoughts
- 10:21on this. OK.
- 10:21Number one, I like it because I like it a little bit more
- 10:26because I do think it's a more balanced card, I think.
- 10:28There's more words. Than Dragons, yeah.
- 10:30Really. Multiple.
- 10:31Hands people like. It I like.
- 10:32It this though I I think I'm more interested though in what
- 10:37it represents and I like it more for what it.
- 10:40Yes. They're going deep, and this is
- 10:41going deep. I know people who have a mental
- 10:45blocker because they associate mahjong with the later chapters
- 10:50in life and that's like a blocker for them to getting into
- 10:53it really. Yeah.
- 10:54Like they think you have to wear a moo moo and you get a.
- 10:57It's for old people. What, what?
- 10:58Why is this a youthful card? I think it's more hip.
- 11:02I think it's more modern. I think American mahjong is
- 11:07entering into a new era. OK, right.
- 11:10And so. It's new and fresh.
- 11:11I think it's OK to look in the mirror and take a hard look and
- 11:16say do we need a facelift? Sometimes you'd.
- 11:19Maybe a little here and there. Botox of the mahjong coats.
- 11:24So, you know, I love the game. Our mission is to share the joy
- 11:30that we experience. So you know if, if it needs, if
- 11:34it needs a few drops of minoxidil for growth, for growth
- 11:39and fullness, right? I can relate to that.
- 11:42I can let it grow. That speaks to my heart, Amy.
- 11:45Bring it on. Wow.
- 11:46That was, that was. Really beautiful.
- 11:48That was. A good too, but there's no right
- 11:50or wrong, right? Everyone has.
- 11:52It's fun to. Switch it up.
- 11:54Now I do have a question though. Would you say that for beginners
- 11:57they should learn on the national module?
- 11:59Because I did feel like I was like, oh, I don't know if this
- 12:02is like real or not. Well, I mean.
- 12:04It's a real card if you play out in the wild.
- 12:07It's always going to be. Well, depending on who you play
- 12:09with, I mean if you if you get together with people that play
- 12:12with a big card. My issue is I have a hard time
- 12:15going back and forth between cards because as you might
- 12:18already know about me, I like to learn the card, practice with
- 12:22the card, get good with the card, and to just sit down with
- 12:25the card I've never seen before kind of makes my brain explode
- 12:28and it slows the game down. See, I think that, see, that's
- 12:30what I like about using different cards.
- 12:31The other thing I like about this card which I believe in
- 12:34Episode 1 I mentioned the thing that drives me crazy see about
- 12:37the official card is the colors, the green and the red that.
- 12:40You think? Yeah.
- 12:41This one's more. This one has What does it have?
- 12:43Blue and orange and black so it doesn't immediately align.
- 12:47Attempted to. Match it also by the way it has
- 12:50a few use any wind lines which is not like you might see east
- 12:56and West but they say use any wind which.
- 12:58I think is nice. Do you like how they?
- 13:00Use the wind and there's there's less concealed hands.
- 13:02I don't know if you noticed this.
- 13:03There's less concealed, so there's more options.
- 13:05That's the other thing I like. I like it.
- 13:06Because. I guess concealed hand is an
- 13:08option, but not one I'm probably going to pick.
- 13:10So first time one of us actually plays a concealed hand, that's
- 13:13going to like be a whole episode because none of us have done it.
- 13:15Before Theresa, do you have any deep thoughts?
- 13:17On I like that there's more winds and Dragons sprinkled in.
- 13:21To me it I feel like with the official card, it's almost a
- 13:25given that everyone's going to toss their winds and Dragons.
- 13:29Mostly they're just seem to be wasted a bit on the official
- 13:32card. So I like that there's more
- 13:34options to use them in this card.
- 13:36I like that there's not as many Kongs is on the 2026 official
- 13:40card. I have to echo what Tina said.
- 13:42I think it's a little easier. Yeah, and I think in future
- 13:46episodes we can maybe go with there's variety of other cards
- 13:49than just these two that you can talk about.
- 13:51I kind of like the fact we'll close with this over the course
- 13:54of a year using the same card. If you play a lot, I don't want
- 13:58to say it's boring, but you want to jazz it up a little bit, you
- 14:00know, you want to something a little fresh and different.
- 14:03Or you can dominate on one card and I get my dots.
- 14:07Oh yeah, she puts a dot next to each hand she gets, so she's
- 14:11collecting all the her. Trophies her I.
- 14:13Really want to get the whole card but I'm never going to get
- 14:15concealed hands. Like I honestly don't know how
- 14:17you win a concealed hand like that.
- 14:18Seems bananas. To me, we'll find out.
- 14:20One day we will. Find out.
- 14:21We're going to be the first one. If any of us gets a concealed
- 14:24hand, it's gonna be. Bad.
- 14:26It could be any of us. Don't under.
- 14:27The sealed hand. Underestimate the rest of us,
- 14:30Amy hits. Yes.
- 14:31Yeah, but you exposed. And it was dead.
- 14:35Yeah. I have no record it was.
- 14:39Stolen valor, but. Tina, I think you've offended
- 14:42her enough today. I think.
- 14:44I think you need to let this one slide.
- 14:46OK, Teresa's bringing some facts today.
- 14:49I. Thought it would be fun to give
- 14:51y'all some fun facts about mahjong.
- 14:53So for instance, one of the things that I thought was very
- 14:57interesting that the word Mahjong's means Sparrow in
- 15:00Chinese and the game was named after a Sparrow because the
- 15:05shuffling sound of the tile sounds like birds chirping.
- 15:10Do you think did you think that Amy's a Heaven Burger?
- 15:12Amy is an avid. Burger We should, and we'll talk
- 15:16more about that in future episodes.
- 15:18I love it, I love it. It speaks to me.
- 15:21I love it too. I don't know exactly if
- 15:24shuffling the tile sounds like birds chirping to me.
- 15:26That's a bit of a stress maybe. Sparrows are special.
- 15:29Maybe so, but I think it's I think.
- 15:31It's cute. Sweet.
- 15:32Here's another fun fact, some players wear red underwear when
- 15:37they play mahjong for good luck. What this is a thing?
- 15:41Is there a line of red undies? I don't know.
- 15:45I think we have a marketing opportunity.
- 15:46We have a. Marketing opportunity, brand,
- 15:48everyone. Shoney's.
- 15:50If if there are folks out there who have heard of this or who
- 15:55participate in this, I would like an e-mail please.
- 15:59Maybe not an. E-mail.
- 16:00We don't. Need a picture?
- 16:01Maybe does. Anyone out there wear red
- 16:03underwear? I'm going to start doing that.
- 16:05No, I'm not. That was not she.
- 16:07Could be wearing red underwear right now, we have no idea.
- 16:10That is bananas. Theresa, maybe, maybe the next
- 16:12time you go out in the wild, that'll help your confidence,
- 16:15just knowing there's some just secret under there.
- 16:18I'm gonna look into. That might be worth it.
- 16:20Any other? Who are these people like I
- 16:22want? I need to know more about this.
- 16:24OK, give us one more. Give it.
- 16:26Do you have one more we? Need to know?
- 16:28Here's an interesting fact. Abercrombie and Fitch sold the
- 16:33first mahjong sets in North America in New York City during
- 16:37the 1920s. That is really.
- 16:39Abercrombie and Fitch. First of all, I didn't know
- 16:42Abercrombie and Fitch was that old.
- 16:44But yes, they sold the very first mahjong sets that.
- 16:47That's a fun back to everybody. I think that's a great place to
- 16:50end. All right, because that is
- 16:52interesting. I'm still I'm still at the red
- 16:54panties. OK everybody.
- 16:57Thanks again for listening. This was great.
- 16:59We'll see you next time on. The little House of Maj.
- 17:03everyone. Is welcome in.
- 17:05The. Little.
- 17:05House of Maj.
