- 0:02He walked around the world without ever leaving home.
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1131 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Russell Mumper.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You think a great accomplishment
- 0:23needs a big audience, but upgraded.
- 0:24He knows the biggest finish lines are crossed quietly.
- 0:27Here's the story. Russell Mumper is VP for
- 0:31Research at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
- 0:34On June 25th of this year, Russell finished walking around
- 0:38the world. He didn't cross an ocean.
- 0:40He didn't stamp a passport. He walked out his front door
- 0:44almost every day for nearly 14 years. 5 miles a day, give or
- 0:48take. Through job changes, through a
- 0:50move between states, through weather.
- 0:51They gave him every excuse to stay inside.
- 0:54The numbers are staggering. 55,000,000 steps, nearly 6000
- 0:59walks. 49 pairs of worn out trail shoes.
- 1:02Enough hills along the way to climb up and down Mount Everest
- 1:0446 times. Add it all up and you get 24,901
- 1:09miles, the circumference of the earth.
- 1:12Now here's the part I can't stop thinking about.
- 1:15When Ferdinand Magellan's crew circled the globe, they got a
- 1:18place in the history books. When astronauts orbit the Earth,
- 1:22we watched the launch on live television.
- 1:24When Russell Mumford finished going around the world, there
- 1:27was no ribbon, no press conference, no medal finished in
- 1:31his driveway. His family was there, his dogs
- 1:33were there. That was the whole crowd. 14
- 1:36years of work in the finish line was the crack in his own
- 1:39pavement. And I think that's exactly
- 1:41right, because the walk was never for an audience.
- 1:45Nobody claps for mile 11,000. Nobody cheers for walk #4217 on
- 1:51a great Tuesday in February. For 14 years, the only witness
- 1:54to most of those miles was the man walking them.
- 1:57And that's true of your biggest accomplishments to the marriage
- 2:01you keep choosing, the kids you keep showing up for the skill
- 2:05you keep sharpening, the health you keep protecting.
- 2:09No one is watching. No one is clapping.
- 2:11And it counts anyway. The world tells you if there's
- 2:15no audience, there's no achievement.
- 2:18Upgraded thinking knows the opposite.
- 2:21The achievements that matter most are the ones you'd still
- 2:23chase if no one ever found out. The better story to tell
- 2:27yourself is I hit the pavement every day and log today's steps.
- 2:32Take one lap today that nobody sees.
- 2:36Tell me a story of something you accomplished quietly to from
- 2:40chad.smith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 2:43What have you been working at for years that nobody claps for?
