- 0:34Jon: Just finished it an hour ago.
- 0:36And can I tell you how the, that movie messes up the two that came before it.
- 0:41So if you remember
- 0:41Ryan : Wow.
- 0:41Jon: first two
- 0:42Places, they're running through the woods and stuff, trying to find a
- 0:45safe place to be and whatever.
- 0:47in day one,
- 0:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 0:48Jon: right from the beginning, it's established that monsters
- 0:52don't go in the water.
- 0:53So if you go on or in water, you're safe.
- 0:56Ryan : Wow.
- 1:00Jon: they established the water is safe.
- 1:01Kearns: So they went full sign.
- 1:03Jon: Yeah, so, but
- 1:04That makes the first two completely nonsensical.
- 1:07Go to a boat gym and get on a boat.
- 1:10Kearns: I thought you were speaking in a Canadian accent.
- 1:13I thought I was trying to waiting for you to finish your statement.
- 1:15What a, what a boot gym.
- 1:17Jon: the boat gym.
- 1:19I was
- 1:20Ryan : Get on the
- 1:20Kearns: Oh my God.
- 1:22Ryan : when you have writers jump into everything else, it's , non canonical.
- 1:26Even if it's the creator who does it, , to go off, like, Saints of Newark.
- 1:30I was so excited for that prequel.
- 1:32David Chase was writing it, messed up the whole story, and he created So, to , hear
- 1:36about this about Quiet Place Day 1, and them messing that up, I mean, watch the
- 1:40Kearns: it animated or is it a movie?
- 1:42Jon: live action.
- 1:43Kearns: It's live action.
- 1:44Is Emily Blunt in it?
- 1:45I know her only weakness is a rusty nail.
- 1:47Jon: nobody from the first
- 1:48Ryan : But that's
- 1:48Kearns: No, she's not in it.
- 1:50It'd be cool if John Kaczynski was in it.
- 1:51Jon: Yeah,
- 1:52Kearns: Prequel style.
- 1:53Was Cillian Murphy the dude who was living in the furnace in the second one?
- 1:57Jon: yeah, I think so
- 1:58Kearns: Is that Cillian Murphy?
- 1:59That was a weird kind of role for him too.
- 2:02I was the neighbor who was scoping out your wife for eight years.
- 2:06Now you're gone.
- 2:07I'm crawling out of the furnace.
- 2:09In the boiler.
- 2:10It'd be cool if it was animated.
- 2:11I'd watch a quiet place animated film for sure.
- 2:15Jon: I probably
- 2:15Kearns: I think it would be neat
- 2:16Jon: as long as they figure out their lore
- 2:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:18Well, they screwed they you can't come back from that.
- 2:21They're doing Cloverfield 4's coming.
- 2:23I think we've touched on that and that's another one where I feel like we're
- 2:26gonna get the final nail in the coffin of the precarious Cloverfield lore.
- 2:30That one seems like this will probably kill that franchise.
- 2:32Rightfully so.
- 2:33The scariest thing in that franchise is John Goodman.
- 2:36And the Cloverfield Lane movie, and I, I stand by that.
- 2:39His performance is phenomenal.
- 2:40But what is animated is part of zombie ology, which is the
- 2:44movie we're going over this week.
- 2:46Welcome to Xenomania, it's our fourth episode.
- 2:49We're hitting zombies again,
- 2:51Jon: Yeah, we've hit
- 2:52Kearns: but this time we're hitting zombies out of Hong Kong, maybe.
- 2:56Yeah, we have, which you have to do.
- 2:58Theoretically, you have to hit zombies hard.
- 3:00Ryan : Right in the head.
- 3:00Kearns: Yes.
- 3:01Which they established in the movie, like 80 minutes into it.
- 3:06So zombieology for people who don't know, came out in 2018.
- 3:10It's produced in Hong Kong for Hong Kong by Hong Kong.
- 3:13So it's Chinese.
- 3:14And I erroneously thought this must be Japanese because they, it comes
- 3:18equipped with multiple waifus.
- 3:20There's a Shonen angle to it.
- 3:22There's a big, , I will power up and protect my friends kind of vibe to it.
- 3:27But it is most assuredly Chinese
- 3:29Jon: And it
- 3:30Kearns: and John dug this one up too.
- 3:32Ryan : Okay.
- 3:39Okay.
- 3:42, Jon: these B movies and, , under seen foreign movies.
- 3:46Kearns: okay.
- 3:46Ryan : I didn't feel like it had a B movie vibe , the production was
- 3:49very high valued, Especially with a lot of CGI, and the chicken.
- 3:53the, I, that's, , gonna haunt me tonight.
- 3:55But I loved it, I wanna be its friend, but I know you're gonna me into a zombie,
- 4:00Jon: So, I recognize that it is 100 percent a chicken mascot, however, every
- 4:06time I see it, I imagine that it's one of those egg in a nest sandwich things.
- 4:11You know, where you put the egg
- 4:12Ryan : Yes.
- 4:13Kearns: Oh, wow.
- 4:14Jon: it up, that's all I see when I see that thing.
- 4:16Kearns: Yeah, you call it egg in a nest?
- 4:17We used to call it egg in a hole growing up, you heathen.
- 4:20Jon: Yeah, well,
- 4:20Ryan : Egg
- 4:21Kearns: Egg in a nest works way better.
- 4:23Ryan : Egg in
- 4:23Kearns: in a basket!
- 4:24You're so British.
- 4:25Ryan : Yes.
- 4:26Kearns: Egg in a basket?
- 4:28Jon: to
- 4:28Ryan : a little egg.
- 4:29Jon: I to Google what it was actually called cause I was just calling it
- 4:33egg and toast for the longest time.
- 4:35So, and I know it's not just called
- 4:37Kearns: To be fair.
- 4:38Egg in a basket.
- 4:38Yeah, we used to call it eggs in a hole.
- 4:40We tried making them for our kids for a while.
- 4:42Then we just started doing soft boiled eggs.
- 4:44Because they couldn't handle, there's too much going on there.
- 4:47Yeah, he does look like that too when he's, when he's walking them down.
- 4:51He does look like a egg in a hole, egg in a basket kind of deal, for sure.
- 4:55Ryan : Did you notice his eyes?
- 4:57One was smaller than the other.
- 4:58One was huge and then the other one was just this tiny.
- 5:01Okay.
- 5:01Like I was just like,
- 5:02Kearns: Yeah, I think that was to make him look Yeah, I think that's make
- 5:05him look like he's angry or whatever his facial expression needs to be for
- 5:09whatever he's the mascot of in Hong Kong, and I'm sure it's probably their
- 5:13Chick fil a or something like that.
- 5:15They must be like, Oh my God, I can't believe they used it.
- 5:17But none of us know what the hell's going on.
- 5:19And that happens a lot in this movie.
- 5:21There's a lot of references that are very local to Hong Kong that
- 5:24nobody else will really get unless you're researching it, which we did.
- 5:28And, for example, the pushy real estate guys,
- 5:31Jon: Mm
- 5:31Kearns: apparently that's a thing in Hong Kong.
- 5:33They stalk young people and try to get them into apartments,
- 5:36cruddy little apartments.
- 5:38Ryan : Which is creepy,
- 5:39Kearns: one.
- 5:40Ryan : They're just running up.
- 5:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:41The whole time.
- 5:42It's like that running joke with them.
- 5:44Jon: I mean, we sort of have the opposite now, don't we, in this country?
- 5:47I don't know about you guys, but I, least three or four days a
- 5:50week, get things in the mail from guys offering cash for my home.
- 5:54It's just sort of in reverse.
- 5:55Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 5:55Jon: get stalked by the guys who want to sell,
- 5:57Kearns: Yeah,
- 5:58Jon: your house, not sell you a house.
- 5:59Kearns: that is true.
- 6:00they want to give you less than top dollar on your house.
- 6:03And usually it's the front for a corporation to buy your home.
- 6:06Cause there's a ton of companies buying up tons of houses to
- 6:08manipulate the housing market.
- 6:10Get your tinfoil hats listeners, because that's one of the big ones coming for you.
- 6:13The movie starts out as a slow burn.
- 6:15So I, I'm a giant weeb.
- 6:17I love my anime.
- 6:18I I just started watching Solo Leveling on Crunchyroll the other night.
- 6:23I was,, really excited I have a new show.
- 6:25Cause there's been, you know, there's not a lot out there to watch anymore.
- 6:28My Attack on Titan ended, Vinland Saga is dry all of them.
- 6:32Jujutsu Kaisen finished up, there's no Demon Slayer, all that stuff.
- 6:35So they start out this movie and it's an anime style fight.
- 6:38And it's cool.
- 6:40And I thought for a second when John mentioned it, he didn't
- 6:42tell me it was fully in Chinese.
- 6:44So you're watching it.
- 6:45You can watch a dubbed version, but I watched it sub because, you know, I'm a
- 6:49purist and I saw it animated and I was like, Oh my God, is this a two hour long
- 6:53anime movie that he just roped us into?
- 6:55Cause I'm so in.
- 6:56And then it switches into real live actors.
- 6:59We get introduced to Lone and Young, the two main characters.
- 7:02And it is a slow start.
- 7:05They have some comic relief in there, but it, I'm not going to say,
- 7:08don't go out and watch this movie.
- 7:09I'm not going to crap all over it.
- 7:10It's a low budget movie.
- 7:12That does a lot with the money that you had and, a lot of it does land,
- 7:15but it is one thing you have to prepare yourself for is, you know, You've got a
- 7:1935 minute exposition sort of beginning
- 7:22Ryan : Yeah,
- 7:23Jon: they sort of established this dragons hero arc for Lone and Young.
- 7:28You know, they have an earth dragon and they just sort of, yeah.
- 7:33Kearns: in the mythology.
- 7:34Jon: And the beginning is really just
- 7:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:36Jon: and their friend who, it turns out there may not be a government
- 7:41operative filming, their lives.
- 7:44There's nothing to film, but they're documenting everything.
- 7:47Ryan : You're
- 7:47Kearns: So it looks like a found footage.
- 7:50Ryan : I was gonna say you're talking about Yit and the
- 7:52Special Abnormal Activity Squad.
- 7:54Jon: Yes.
- 7:54Kearns: That's the, one of the things about this is They almost
- 7:57use it as comic relief when they, expose some of the stuff they
- 8:00have to do to make the movie work.
- 8:02There's one point where they literally have no way to get to where they're
- 8:05going and a truck just randomly rolls into the frame and a dead body falls out.
- 8:09They're like, we really could use a truck right now.
- 8:11And it just shows up and they're like, Oh, all right.
- 8:13And they just get in and they drive away.
- 8:15That was pretty funny.
- 8:16And there's a bunch of other stuff they do as well that I
- 8:19can't think of in the moment.
- 8:20But.
- 8:21They don't have a lot of money and resources.
- 8:24So they have to make certain things work.
- 8:26What I did find out is Sean and wing are two characters that are prominent
- 8:30Chinese actors that did this movie.
- 8:32Jon: I did not know that.
- 8:33Kearns: So when you think back to the movie and you think of their presence and
- 8:36what they do during the movie, it actually makes sense because they are good actors.
- 8:40And you can tell the difference between them and everybody else.
- 8:43there's waifu number one who we meet early on and she's practicing with
- 8:46a bo staff out in the street and all the guys are watching her and waifu
- 8:50number two is literally a waifu.
- 8:52She's a wife that they find during the zombie apocalypse portion of the film,
- 8:56and she was just sleeping on a bench randomly alive and she wanted some food.
- 9:00She demands food.
- 9:01Jon: Yes.
- 9:02Ryan : Oh yeah, because she basically she got turned down at her wedding.
- 9:05the groomsman doesn't show.
- 9:07She gets the text and she just wants ice cream and potato chips as she screams
- 9:12at Lone About on top of the roof.
- 9:14that was his dream girl though.
- 9:15That was Xuen.
- 9:16Cause that's the, the woman who's does the tournaments and stuff.
- 9:20So he's all in heaven when he sees her she's like, I just want food.
- 9:24getting married.
- 9:25There's a zombie apocalypse, let it have me.
- 9:27And he's like, no, you're, there's going to be people affected.
- 9:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 9:33Ryan : little stuff in it.
- 9:35I remember in the beginning with the little kid with the pushpins, when he
- 9:39puts them in and then, oh, thumbtacks.
- 9:43All right.
- 9:43Now, after that, I
- 9:45Kearns: He
- 9:45Ryan : that.
- 9:46Kearns: in his hand.
- 9:46Ryan : Oh my God, I couldn't wait for that little kid to get pummeled.
- 9:49And when it happened, I was just.
- 9:51I'll be honest.
- 9:51I was like, yeah, good for them.
- 9:53And then they get all worried because think they did a crime.
- 9:56No, you were killing a zombie.
- 9:58Gentlemen, you're doing what you were supposed to do.
- 10:00Kearns: It's so random that they chose zombies.
- 10:02This movie could have used anything else to the zombie.
- 10:06so you have, you have a shown in anime with the power of friendship, we will
- 10:09succeed plot line and the mashed up right next to a zombie apocalypse and it works.
- 10:14Well, but it's true.
- 10:15It could be a goblin invasion.
- 10:17It could be anything.
- 10:18They could have done ghoulies six or whatever they would
- 10:20number they'd be up to for this.
- 10:22And these guys could have used that.
- 10:24And it being zombies though, makes it cool because you see why they made
- 10:27that little kid such a dick, because, when they inevitably have the kids
- 10:30zombify and that that's actually the part that kicks off the film, by the
- 10:34way the, the action portion of the film is what happens to this kid.
- 10:37It is hilarious.
- 10:39And you love every second of it because he's a little shit.
- 10:41Jon: Yeah, but, even then they establish how good Lone and Young are because
- 10:46they already don't like the kid.
- 10:47They already know the kid is a jerk.
- 10:49But they still have to argue over whether they should pummel him.
- 10:53we kill this kid?
- 10:54, Kearns: Right.
- 10:54Jon: it's a kid, we can't, it's still a big fight for them, no matter how bad.
- 10:59And then, just the one throwaway line in that scene, Again, fatty is amazing.
- 11:05Kearns: That is good.
- 11:05I like how they chastise him for how he's treating his parents
- 11:08as he's eating their faces too.
- 11:09That's pretty funny.
- 11:10Dude, you can't treat your parents like that.
- 11:12They're very out of touch they're very dumb, the two main characters.
- 11:15Well, the main character's long.
- 11:16The two guys, their best friends, they, it's, so the whole idea of the
- 11:20movie that we're glancing over is that Lone specifically has a fantasy of
- 11:25being a hero and overcoming and say, he's a savior complex and all of that.
- 11:30And he's just a really good guy.
- 11:31Now.
- 11:31He, he was raised by Sean.
- 11:34He calls her auntie.
- 11:35She's not really his aunt though.
- 11:36I don't believe.
- 11:36Ryan : No.
- 11:37Kearns: and his dad, left.
- 11:38And is a dick, or was a dick.
- 11:40And his whole portion of the movie is basically one big redemption arc.
- 11:43Kinda.
- 11:44And yeah, so Lone, that's Lone's thing.
- 11:46He, wants to be accepted.
- 11:47He's literally an anime character.
- 11:49Ryan : he's got the basis of it.
- 11:50Jon: I wrote as one of my notes, Lone kind of lives in a fantasy world with no
- 11:55rent and monsters to vanquish., that's his whole world, even before there's zombies.
- 12:00Kearns: that's true.
- 12:00And Then when he gets his purpose, it's almost tongue in cheek as he
- 12:05hits the benchmarks of the hero's journey throughout the film and
- 12:08evolves and becomes the heroine.
- 12:10He consistently saves people who don't deserve saving.
- 12:13Well, not necessarily, but you know what I mean?
- 12:15He's always, Getting people to want to live and things like that.
- 12:18As he ambles on and then we find out, you know, I don't want to get to the
- 12:22ending yet, but they have some kick ass action scenes in between from I don't
- 12:26know, from about an hour in to through the end, really, but from an hour in
- 12:30through the last 20 minutes, there's some cool group fight scenes and they
- 12:35have some awesome homemade weapons.
- 12:36Ryan : Are you talking about the, the drill, the extension
- 12:39with the, the saw at the end?
- 12:41Was pretty
- 12:41Kearns: Yeah, That thing is amazing.
- 12:43And they had like the, he has the chain too with the spike bucket thing.
- 12:46Ryan : the helm, the guillotine, he calls it.
- 12:48Kearns: Yeah, that all of it.
- 12:49I'm just watching it.
- 12:50So now you have to imagine we're all, we're all adults.
- 12:53I'm doing air quotes for those listening with jobs and responsibilities.
- 12:56So I watched this movie in four sittings.
- 12:59And I'm trying to pay attention when they're sitting there doing
- 13:01the Home Depot battleax fight scene stuff and just screwing things
- 13:05together to kill the zombies.
- 13:07It was cool.
- 13:07Jon: I love the first time they take them out though, and young turns
- 13:11that saw one on and it works for about a second and the battery dies.
- 13:16Kearns: But that's, kind of like the way they are, they're not very good.
- 13:18They don't turn them into effective heroes.
- 13:20And I like that they're not those guys.
- 13:23Not to say that they never could be, but they're not those guys.
- 13:25And that's what keeps the comedy going in the movie a little bit
- 13:28is them consistently screwing up.
- 13:30Ryan : It also gives a connection because they have flaws, you know, and with
- 13:33those flaws, I mean, everyone has flaws.
- 13:36So watching the film, you find a connection with these characters
- 13:39like, Oh, this could happen to me.
- 13:41Or, know, the battery dying or being in a dire situation where
- 13:44it's like, shit, what do I do?
- 13:46You kind of can relate.
- 13:47And I don't know.
- 13:47I felt like there was a little relation with Lone and Young.
- 13:50I mean, Young kept me cracking up.
- 13:51Especially with the one sit up line.
- 13:53Jon: Swing.
- 13:53Ryan : only does one sit up.
- 13:54It's when he gets out of bed in the morning.
- 13:56And I was like, Oh shit, this is hilarious.
- 13:59Kearns: The main bad guy uses that again at the end of the movie too.
- 14:01And the, thing I like about young is young shows up in the frame when Lone
- 14:06is doing something he gets punched in the balls a couple of times and stuff.
- 14:09And , remember when he shows up with the crackers for the bride,
- 14:13that's what I, I forget her name.
- 14:14Ryan : A shoe in.
- 14:15Kearns: She went, he brought, he walks up with.
- 14:17Swing!
- 14:18He shows up with the crackers for her because she's hungry and she's hangry.
- 14:22So he hands crackers to Lone so he can feed this angry woman of his dreams.
- 14:27Jon: Yeah.
- 14:27Ryan : the best of pals, man.
- 14:29They got each other's back and that's what it's all about.
- 14:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:32It's just the way he does it, though.
- 14:33He's like, Ta da!
- 14:34And he hands the crackers over and then he just , scurries out of the frame.
- 14:37He knows that this isn't his scene.
- 14:39Kind of thing.
- 14:40It's funny.
- 14:40Ryan : It happens earlier too when Young is walking with Yit down the
- 14:44sidewalk, and, he shoes Lone away, and she's, trying to follow him, he's
- 14:48like, no no, this is, this is for us.
- 14:50He's like, I can't have you cross, there's cars coming, and it shows, an empty road.
- 14:54She's like, there are no cars.
- 14:55He's like, no, there's cars!
- 14:57Jon: And then he has
- 14:57by standing in the middle of the road as there's a van coming.
- 15:01Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 15:02Ryan : The guy's, on the cell phone, looking at receipts,
- 15:05driving all crazy, and then he yells at them at the end of it.
- 15:08Like, you were wrong too, bro.
- 15:09Jon: He's a stereotypical distracted driver, just swerving all over the place,
- 15:14and you know Young's not going to be able to stop him, and then comes and joins
- 15:18in, and really what's going to happen is they're both going to get smoked by a van.
- 15:22The driver comes, gets his
- 15:25Kearns: their innocence in a way at that part.
- 15:27It's kind of funny.
- 15:28There's a few things about this that I wanted to touch on, but the main
- 15:31one I really wanted to get into was that it came out in 2018, right?
- 15:36And then we had the Chinese, the CCCP, what are the, what is mainland China
- 15:41called now people's Republic of China.
- 15:43Ryan : Yes.
- 15:45Kearns: fully took over control of Hong Kong, right.
- 15:47As this was happening.
- 15:49And the film kind of comes out right in the middle of that.
- 15:51And it, it really seems like a metaphor for that as well.
- 15:55That's the big evil That the youth of Hong Kong is going to be
- 15:59fighting any teeth to that idea.
- 16:01Jon: I can get behind it.
- 16:02I mean,
- 16:04Ryan : Silence.
- 16:12Jon: of people falling in line with communists taking over and
- 16:16then the youth sort of trying to fight it off and I can see that.
- 16:19Kearns: And then ultimately losing, which sucks too.
- 16:24Ryan : They kept the Chinese lore with zombies with the spirits.
- 16:27And how, the spirits infect the body.
- 16:29They take over the body and that becomes a zombie.
- 16:32I'm happy they kept that lore still with the Chinese culture because here in
- 16:36America it's usually like, or something or that create the zombie in Chinese lore.
- 16:41It's spirits So I was happy that they kept that
- 16:44Jon: Yeah, they did, and the zombies work as an occupying force, and then at the
- 16:49end you get their, sort of, the added arsenal of eggs as exploding projectiles.
- 16:55Kearns: They're getting back to the chicken again.
- 16:57Everybody
- 16:58Jon: will always come
- 16:59Ryan : I wasn't expecting the eggs
- 17:00Kearns: there's a part where there's a carpet bomb of exploding
- 17:03eggs that comes at the crew.
- 17:05It's pretty funny.
- 17:06When the action stuff, it's not bonsai level crazy, but it's funny.
- 17:09There's crazy action The fighting, it doesn't remind me of Chinese,
- 17:13chinese cinema has, there's a different sort of flow with
- 17:16regard to their fighting.
- 17:17When you see, I don't know the old, old style movies and things like that,
- 17:21that are actually Chinese, the animated movies that are Chinese, they don't
- 17:25tend to have the sharp cuts and changes.
- 17:27This felt Japanese, the way they did that.
- 17:30Chinese and Korean movies specifically tend to be a little bit more, not
- 17:33American, they're their own thing for sure, but less sharp and cutting
- 17:37Japanese and Indian action sequences have something in common where it's very, in
- 17:41your face, funny, slappy kind of thing.
- 17:44I mean, their action is very frame by frame by frame by frame.
- 17:47It's keeping you looking back and forth, kind of like you're watching a.
- 17:50A tennis match and fast forward.
- 17:52So I was surprised to see that like, Oh, this is a Chinese movie.
- 17:54But I kept going back in my head., I feel like this is a Japanese
- 17:57movie especially with the fighting.
- 17:58Jon: Yeah, yeah, it did.
- 18:00It also felt like a Chinese Evil Dead.
- 18:03You know, you have the improvised
- 18:05Kearns: Interesting.
- 18:06Jon: you have this sort of frenetic fighting and stuff,, there are times
- 18:10where it feels very Evil Dead to me.
- 18:12Kearns: I could see that.
- 18:13Ryan : Would you say
- 18:14Kearns: I could see that.
- 18:14Ryan : because of the comedy aspect?
- 18:16Jon: yeah, you could go too.
- 18:18It's not quite as comedic as Evil Dead 2 can be, but it's definitely,
- 18:22it's got the comedic elements.
- 18:23It's somewhere in between one and two.
- 18:25Kearns: Makes sense.
- 18:26So the crux of everything comes down to Lone's father's redemption arc.
- 18:31How does that end?
- 18:31Is he redeemed fellas?
- 18:33Jon: as much as he's gonna be, I mean, he's estranged from Lone after attempting
- 18:39an insurance scam with Shan that
- 18:42Ryan : Yep.
- 18:46Jon: and he just sort of runs off after that, and then he comes back,
- 18:49Willing to do anything to be back in Shan's life and Lone's life, offering
- 18:54the sword, cut me, cut me, cut me.
- 18:56And he takes the sword and
- 18:57Kearns: Yeah, he does ask to be and that's very Japanese too, by the way.
- 19:01Maybe it's Chinese too, but to cut your hair off and disgrace.
- 19:04Jon: there's
- 19:04Kearns: It's another one.
- 19:05Sorry about that.
- 19:06Jon: watching Lone confront his dad in half of a panda costume.
- 19:10Kearns: Yeah, that's funny too.
- 19:11Ryan : Who's your son?
- 19:12Jon: yeah, they seem to do something like that through the whole movie.
- 19:16Every time there's a heavier emotional scene, they sort of, Take the edge off it
- 19:21a little bit with something goofy either during or immediately after like when
- 19:27wing is ultimately redeemed a father and he's you know he's running out to
- 19:31distract the eggs and he takes the egg to the head and you're like oh my god they
- 19:35just Killed Lone's dad and then every time you would almost feel really sad.
- 19:41They're gonna cut in with something a little goofy.
- 19:44Kearns: Yeah, that's that comic relief thing is well utilized in this for sure.
- 19:49Ryan : When the egg hits the propane tank, it follows up a lot with the comedy.
- 19:52Because once that propane tank explodes, all the eggs become fried eggs.
- 19:56then you just see the chicken feet just looking at all the fried eggs.
- 19:59Kearns: Everything they do with that stupid chicken lands arguably
- 20:02not maybe the end, but the rest of it's pretty damn funny.
- 20:06So, with the movie,
- 20:08the tough part about doing an episode on a movie like this is that
- 20:11it's,
- 20:12on substance that we can chew on.
- 20:13It's not light on substance in general, but it is there.
- 20:16It
- 20:16Ryan : You
- 20:17Kearns: wide net.
- 20:18And so nothing's super deep.
- 20:20All the characters are very cookie cutter.
- 20:22Which is fine because of what the movie is.
- 20:25It's good.
- 20:25It's entertaining, but there's no deep roots that we have with the director.
- 20:30Jon: Yeah,
- 20:34Kearns: it's a subtitled Chinese film, so that's tricky to follow
- 20:37along with in general too.
- 20:39And it's doing three things at once, where it's trying to do Lone's Hero
- 20:42arc, Wing's Redemption arc And there's another thing going on there with the
- 20:47whole group coalescing and the power of friendship aspect of it as well.
- 20:51And there's probably two or three more with the other characters
- 20:53that I'm not touching upon because I can't think of it right now.
- 20:56Jon: hold
- 20:56Ryan : what happens when you have like six screenwriters.
- 20:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:59They all wrote it.
- 21:00Ryan : Yeah, there was six screenwriters who wrote the whole film.
- 21:03So, from what I was reading, it was pulling idea from idea to idea, and then
- 21:07combining it all to form this movie.
- 21:10But again, they were just having fun, I feel.
- 21:12I don't think it was one of those, this is gonna make Cinema history.
- 21:15It's just it's a fun movie for people to enjoy.
- 21:18And I feel like a lot of people, I mean, I feel like we all enjoyed it.
- 21:21The only thing is, is I agree with the story.
- 21:23There's a lot of story, with kit or yet, I'm sorry.
- 21:26I keep calling her kit.
- 21:27It's not the car, David
- 21:29it's just . She gets swarmed by the real estate agents and
- 21:32then she disappears and then
- 21:33Jon: Silence.
- 21:38Ryan : basically tells you when a person's being negative or positive
- 21:42and that's how she can find the zombies is through the negative energy
- 21:45Kearns: I forgot about that.
- 21:46Okay.
- 21:46Ryan : well it's like they're like oh what happened to her and young's like oh she's
- 21:50on an important mission you don't know if she's on an important mission you're
- 21:53just presuming and i feel like there's a lot of presumption written in it but then
- 21:57they fill it in later like oh yeah this did happen like with wink he gets Bit
- 22:01in when he's making the eggs for Shan.
- 22:04you hear noises, so you think something happens, and it's
- 22:07like, Oh yeah, I got bit.
- 22:08When did you get bit?
- 22:09And then you have to kinda, as the viewer, kinda sum it all up.
- 22:12Which is fine, but it's like, just put it in the movie.
- 22:15Kearns: Yeah, there's too much of that.
- 22:17There's too much of that sort of cut pastes.
- 22:19Don't worry about it.
- 22:20It'll work sort of mentality with the movie.
- 22:22But then if you put yourself into the place of just seeing it from a certain
- 22:27perspective, you kind of forgive all that.
- 22:29And enjoy the viewing experience.
- 22:32or you don't, and you hate the movie.
- 22:33I haven't seen a single review of this film that wasn't lukewarm.
- 22:36At best, I thought it was much better than a lot of people gave a credit for, and
- 22:41I do understand its pitfalls, but if you just kind of see,, all right, they were
- 22:44sort of making a mockery, not a mockery, but they were sort of utilizing tongue
- 22:48in cheek methods of using these different story techniques, and they did mash them
- 22:52all together, it was a collage and if you can accept the ending for what it is,
- 22:56Which is just, it, I mean, I don't know if we should spoil the ending of the movie.
- 23:00We probably shouldn't.
- 23:01It's not the sixth sense, guys, but.
- 23:03Eww, no, we won't.
- 23:05Ryan : It's an interesting twist.
- 23:06I'll just say that to the viewers.
- 23:08It's an interesting twist when it makes you think, because I was like, oh
- 23:11shit, and I was like, oh shit, okay.
- 23:14I see where this is happening.
- 23:15The reason why I'm saying that too right now is my wife, she
- 23:18was watching it with me, and
- 23:20Kearns: oh, poor Jada.
- 23:21Ryan : oh no, she loved it!
- 23:22Jada
- 23:22Kearns: Oh, really?
- 23:23Ryan : She loved it.
- 23:24She said kudos to Jon.
- 23:25She loved it.
- 23:26So she's finishing watching it now because we fell asleep while we were watching it.
- 23:30And she's like, how did it end?
- 23:31And I'm like, oh, you're going to find it interesting.
- 23:33You're either going to hate it or you're going to either love it.
- 23:36was like, how'd you find it?
- 23:37I said, I loved it.
- 23:38Cause, if you go into the deeper understanding of it, it's very simple
- 23:41and then there's a deeper meaning.
- 23:43that's with a lot of zombie films, we're talking about George A.
- 23:46Romero
- 23:46he always had meaning.
- 23:48Night of the Living Dead is really, you know, it's about the end of
- 23:51racism, is how he set it up, in my opinion, and from what I've read.
- 23:55And this kind of movie does the same thing because it's just about being yourself
- 23:59and just I feel like, standing up for what you believe in and never giving
- 24:02Kearns: That's good.
- 24:03And it's true.
- 24:04And then you get to see that ultimately, you know, you can, you
- 24:07can interpret it as they're consumed.
- 24:09And in turn, that works with the metaphor about Hong Kong being consumed
- 24:13by China and losing their autonomy.
- 24:15works and that's how the ending hit me.
- 24:17And I was like, that was artistically done.
- 24:19It was well done.
- 24:21I got, I got the point.
- 24:22I thought it was cool.
- 24:23And it's not just boring to watch.
- 24:24It's not like watching your homework.
- 24:25The ending sequence is sick.
- 24:27It's done animated because I imagine they didn't have the money
- 24:30to pull that off Avengers Marvel esque style special effects.
- 24:36So they animated it.
- 24:37They animated it well.
- 24:38And it's super cool, but it's also the animated portions are pure fantasy,
- 24:42and that's what we sort of get with Lone is that that's in his head.
- 24:45So did he?
- 24:47There's a there's an idea you can have when you watch the end.
- 24:49This is about as much as I can do to describe it.
- 24:51You can decide whether or not the character engaged in anything past any
- 24:56of the last 10 to 12 minutes of the movie, or if the movie ended exactly 12 minutes
- 25:00earlier and you just watched sort of a fantasy sequence in his head and like
- 25:04that, it's an interesting way to go about
- 25:06Jon: mean, you could almost make the case that the whole movie
- 25:09is a fantasy scene in his head.
- 25:11He's just sort of wherever he is, and this is just what's going on in his mind.
- 25:16Kearns: That could be, you could be sitting in class or work daydreaming.
- 25:19Jon: I think it works best as the two, the animated book ends are fantasy,
- 25:25and what happens in between is.
- 25:26The reality.
- 25:27Reality, but it could all be just be in his
- 25:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:30And that would work because everybody in the movie is a foil for Lone,
- 25:33Jon: Yes.
- 25:34Kearns: including his best friends.
- 25:35And he's like, well, now I just, I want to love interest.
- 25:38And here's this bride who was left at the altar for me.
- 25:41And she's super hot and kicks all the asses.
- 25:44My dream girl and all that stuff.
- 25:46And it's funny, like waifu number one, I keep forgetting her name.
- 25:48Shan's is it her daughter?
- 25:50Ryan : her
- 25:50Kearns: The one from the opening sequence, her niece.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53She's, she's off the table yet is off the table.
- 25:56You can't have her yet alone.
- 25:58Jon: mm-hmm
- 25:58Kearns: He doesn't really see her that way.
- 25:59They're.
- 26:00And they never breached that sort of social contract.
- 26:02Ryan : Yeung does
- 26:03Jon: does.
- 26:03Yeah.
- 26:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:04Yeah, of course.
- 26:05Ryan : six
- 26:05Kearns: he didn't grow up in the same house.
- 26:07Six pack young.
- 26:08What's his most, what's his best contribution?
- 26:10Best friends, six pack Yeung.
- 26:11What's his best contribution to the movie
- 26:13he's a hundred percent just fodder foil.
- 26:16He's power of friendship guy.
- 26:18He's funny though.
- 26:18He, what he does for what he does in his role, he is funny, but he
- 26:21doesn't really accomplish much at all.
- 26:23Jon: He's the one with, with the saw that doesn't work.
- 26:26He's the, you know, he's, he's the more hapless of the two.
- 26:30Kearns: Which works well in Lone's arc.
- 26:32Like, Lone's mindset of him being the hero, too.
- 26:36Is he has to take care of Young as well.
- 26:38They're not co equals.
- 26:39Ryan : He states it.
- 26:40He says that I will die before you Lone to young.
- 26:43My life will be up for grabs first before your life.
- 26:46So it kind of shows Lone like a really good friend on that.
- 26:49Not saying young's not a bad like he's he's not a horrible friend,
- 26:53but , he's there for the ride Lone.
- 26:54Like got you.
- 26:55Kearns: Yeah, that's to bolster that whole,, self white knight sort of thing.
- 26:59That way he sees himself compared to, and it's definitely in contrast
- 27:02to the way other people see him.
- 27:04He gets, he's getting the made fun of and stuff like that throughout the
- 27:07beginning of the movie a little bit.
- 27:08Jon: And you can also look at Yeung and further that the whole thing is a
- 27:12fantasy because he's kind of like your stereotypical imaginary friend, too.
- 27:17He just sort of
- 27:18Kearns: Hmm.
- 27:19Jon: you, but never really to himself.
- 27:21He Lones creation, almost, in that way.
- 27:23Kearns: Yeah,
- 27:24he is really, he's a quintessential foil character.
- 27:27It's true.
- 27:27That's so funny.
- 27:28I never thought of it until you described it that way, but yeah, it's very true.
- 27:31God, what else can we point out about this masterpiece?
- 27:34Not really, this good hang.
- 27:36It is a good hang.
- 27:37It's a nice first date, maybe second date, but, but you're going
- 27:41to see other people kind of movie.
- 27:43Jon: To go with the relationship thing, I kind of like that moment
- 27:47he runs into his ex girlfriend who's carrying a baby who she has dressed
- 27:52Ryan : Yes.
- 27:54Jon: yours?
- 27:54No, it can't be.
- 27:55And then he's like, is that mine?
- 27:57No, he's two.
- 27:58We broke up six years ago.
- 28:01It's just, the whole thing is so funny to me.
- 28:04Kearns: Well, because he's in his head like saying, is that mine?
- 28:07Ryan : What's
- 28:13Jon: be, then he goes and talks, he's like, does it mind?
- 28:15It's just so preposterous to then hear them say, her say, I broke up.
- 28:21We broke up six years ago.
- 28:22He's two.
- 28:23You
- 28:24Ryan : that whole layer?
- 28:25Jon: know, I
- 28:26Kearns: Double layer for double dragons, which they should get sued for that too.
- 28:31But I guess not dragon.
- 28:32That's Dragon of heaven dragon of earth.
- 28:34I think there's seven of each if I'm not mistaken Not in the movie
- 28:37but in the lore But yeah, there's there's not really too much more to
- 28:40dig up this truffles not too deep.
- 28:42Do you guys have any other foreign movies that you're into?
- 28:45Foreign horror movies that you want to shout out?
- 28:47Jon: I didn't go with five other foreign movies or five
- 28:51other, whatever I went with.
- 28:52Five other movies that feature killer food,
- 28:55Kearns: killer food,
- 28:57Jon: food.
- 28:57Kearns: that's going to be okay.
- 28:59So I know, I know one of them's good.
- 29:01I know one of them's going to be,
- 29:02Jon: All right.
- 29:02We'll
- 29:03Ryan : Good.
- 29:05Kearns: Maybe the obvious one isn't on his list.
- 29:08Jon: we'll start with my number five, the original street trash,
- 29:12which is killer street hooch that will hollow a person out.
- 29:16Kearns: What?
- 29:17Ryan : Oh,
- 29:21Jon: going
- 29:22Kearns: There's a man who was on a bender who wrote that script.
- 29:24Jon: trash is going on the
- 29:25Kearns: I guess it must.
- 29:26Jon: Number four, I think we've touched on briefly, Poultry
- 29:30Geist, Night of the Chicken Dead.
- 29:32It's, yep,
- 29:33Kearns: Geist is definitely on, it's in the, the, archives
- 29:38of our recordings for sure.
- 29:39Jon: hmm.
- 29:40Number three, Attack of the Killer Donuts.
- 29:44Kearns: Ha ha ha ha.
- 29:45What a twist.
- 29:46Jon: Which is surprisingly way more fun than it should be.
- 29:50And it's exactly what it sounds like it
- 29:52Kearns: I mean, everybody wants them to get their revenge.
- 29:55We've, we've been massacring donuts for, for century now.
- 29:58Jon: I'm
- 29:58Ryan : for good reason.
- 29:59Jon: few when I get, when you get done.
- 30:00Two, and it's only two because the killer food is a brief appearance.
- 30:04John dies at the end, which has a killer meat monster.
- 30:08Which is exactly
- 30:09meat that becomes possessed and assembles into a meat monster.
- 30:13Kearns: A meat golem, if you will.
- 30:15Jon: golem.
- 30:16for.
- 30:17I can't get enough
- 30:18Kearns: Yeah, probably.
- 30:19Jon: Stuff.
- 30:20Killer Cool Whip.
- 30:21Kearns: Yeah, I definitely thought you were going to be up to stuff.
- 30:23If you haven't seen this stuff, you have to see this stuff.
- 30:25Why do you have to see this stuff, John, since it's your pick?
- 30:28Jon: Oh, it is everything.
- 30:29It is comedic.
- 30:31It's horror.
- 30:32Kearns: is everything.
- 30:34Jon: it is such a commentary on American consumerism.
- 30:37But you don't even have to see it that way.
- 30:39You can just watch it and see a bonkers movie about Killer Cool Whip.
- 30:43Ryan : You got me a killer
- 30:44Kearns: There you go.
- 30:45I
- 30:45Ryan : why.
- 30:45Cool whip!
- 30:46No, I have not.
- 30:48Until you've told me.
- 30:49Jon: I
- 30:50Kearns: it on VHS.
- 30:52Maybe DVD.
- 30:52This stuff is older.
- 30:54Jon: Yeah, it's
- 30:54Kearns: Yeah, we saw it a long time ago.
- 30:56This stuff was at my friend Matt's house growing up when we were watching
- 31:00B horror movies and trying to see boobs.
- 31:02It was way back in the day.
- 31:03And I did, I most assuredly did not pick up on the the commentary
- 31:07on consumerism at the time.
- 31:09All right.
- 31:09So yeah, the attack of the killer donuts,
- 31:12Jon: Mm-hmm
- 31:13Kearns: right?
- 31:13We skipped over the tomatoes
- 31:15Jon: We skipped.
- 31:15Kearns: for good reason.
- 31:16That's too meta.
- 31:18It's too obvious.
- 31:19It's a good one.
- 31:19All right.
- 31:20Poultry Geist.
- 31:21Ryan, do you have a set
- 31:23Ryan : I do, I actually went with top five Asian zombie films that I did
- 31:27some research on as well as movies that I'm familiar with, as well as
- 31:31a couple that am going to definitely see and recommend people to see if
- 31:35they liked zombiology for my fifth pick hashtag alive came out in 2020.
- 31:40It's about Oh Joon Woo, a video game streamer who's stuck in his
- 31:44apartment, struggling to survive during the zombie apocalypse.
- 31:47It seems pretty interesting to me.
- 31:49I've seen trailers on Netflix where he's
- 31:51Down like, how do I get out of this?
- 31:53Very intriguing.
- 31:54Definitely on my list.
- 31:56Number four is the odd family zombie on sale.
- 31:59It's come from 2019 and the story revolves around the park family whose lives
- 32:04get disrupted after the elderly father
- 32:07Kearns: by CastingWords
- 32:17Ryan : Faces the Phantom.
- 32:19But it's with their version of KISS, fighting zombies.
- 32:22I see John smiling.
- 32:23So have you seen Wild Zero, John?
- 32:26Jon: I haven't seen that one, but it reminds me of a movie called
- 32:29Hard Rock Zombies, which it
- 32:31Ryan : Ooh,
- 32:32Jon: feels like the same premise.
- 32:33It's a rock band fighting zombies.
- 32:37Ryan : that's going on my list right now as I'm writing it down.
- 32:40Kearns: Yellow kings, not quite zombies, but similar idea with the the rock band.
- 32:44Jon: I'll throw in hashtag alive.
- 32:47Way more fun than it should be.
- 32:48And Odd Family, Zombie for Sale is also, it's, it's
- 32:53ridiculous, but it's so much fun.
- 32:56It's so well made for what it is.
- 32:58It's sort of, reminds me a lot of Parasite, but.
- 33:02With zombies and more comedy.
- 33:04It's a similar
- 33:05Ryan : That's an
- 33:06Kearns: Interesting.
- 33:07Ryan : Let's say parasite and zombies.
- 33:09I'm sold.
- 33:09Kearns: I know that's pretty good.
- 33:11That's a pretty good combo.
- 33:12And not like parasites listeners.
- 33:14I mean, he means the Oscar award winning parasites.
- 33:17Ryan : Number two is train to Busan from 2016.
- 33:20Man, his estranged daughter and other passengers become trapped
- 33:24on a speeding train during a zombie outbreak in South Korea.
- 33:27I have seen bits and pieces of this, not in its entirety.
- 33:30It's a great zombie film.
- 33:32I know there were, I was like, John, you told me they were supposed
- 33:35to do the remake in New York.
- 33:36It got canceled.
- 33:37I'm kind of fine with that because they shouldn't touch the original
- 33:40Jon: I,
- 33:40Ryan : on that.
- 33:41Jon: is so, so good.
- 33:44It doesn't have the comedy elements that the other ones you've mentioned have,
- 33:48but it is such an effective zombie movie.
- 33:51Ryan : I'm sold on it.
- 33:52And then the last one is from 1998.
- 33:55Good old nineties film bio zombie two mall employees driving to work, hit a man
- 34:00who drank a soda laced with a chemical that turns people into cannibals on
- 34:05Kearns: It's always Soda, the slurm method of getting zombified.
- 34:10Ryan : It was probably code
- 34:11Kearns: Soda was so interwoven into the 1980s.
- 34:14Ryan : That's my five.
- 34:15Jon: A good list.
- 34:16Kearns: Yeah, it is a good list.
- 34:17Ryan : you.
- 34:17we've been having a lot of good lists the last few weeks.
- 34:20Kearns: They are good.
- 34:20And they inspire future episodes, which is also good, but definitely
- 34:23check out some of the movies, their IMDbs and stuff like that, that the
- 34:26guys mentioned in their top fives.
- 34:27And yeah, that was zombiology.
- 34:29So we, we reached out across at least one ocean for that one.
- 34:32And it's available on Amazon prime.
- 34:35If you want to watch it, I'll probably throw the trailer up at the
- 34:37end of the video, like I always do.
- 34:39If you're listening though, you're gonna have to find it your damn self.
- 34:42Take care, everybody.
- 34:43Jon: See ya.
- 34:43Be very afraid.
