- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everybody, welcome.
- 0:01Speaker 2: We are live at the Hollow Restaurants that is at
- 0:04Speaker 2: Manchester Country Club. So we got the big room today
- 0:07Speaker 2: for the Live Gino Orima Coaches Show. I'm your host,
- 0:11Speaker 2: Bob Joyce with the Hall of Famer who. By the way,
- 0:14Speaker 2: I don't know if you have seen this, but when
- 0:17Speaker 2: Gino won Saturday, it's twelve sixty five and one sixty
- 0:21Speaker 2: five is record. He's got eleven hundred more wins than
- 0:23Speaker 2: he has losses. That's insane, isn't it. I mean all
- 0:27Speaker 2: of the all the insane things that you and your
- 0:29Speaker 2: program have done here, but it's also a reflection of
- 0:32Speaker 2: what you've been able to do. So congratulations on it.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Eight eighty eight point four to six percent is the
- 0:38Speaker 2: winning percentage.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Well, most people in Kinnutut just care about the next.
- 0:41Speaker 1: One, the next championship, now the.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Next well yeah, but I mean like the next win.
- 0:48Speaker 3: You know, it's like it's like playing for the Yankees.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You know, when you coach you Kombas was playing for
- 0:55Speaker 3: the Yankees. You get evaluated on every app bat with
- 0:58Speaker 3: the Yankees. You know, guy wings and misses. Why are
- 1:01Speaker 3: we paying him that money?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:03Speaker 3: And uh? You kind you know, we shoot the ball bad,
- 1:07Speaker 3: or you know, we turn the ball over and we
- 1:08Speaker 3: look like a bunch of junior high kids, and you know,
- 1:12Speaker 3: everybody loses their mind, like, oh my god, they're never
- 1:15Speaker 3: going to beat anybody they play like this. Yeah, we're
- 1:18Speaker 3: going to play like that. I wouldn't coach him anymore
- 1:20Speaker 3: if they were going to play like that every night.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But you have that old saying, and the old sports
- 1:23Speaker 2: defense wins championships, And that's been pretty good lately.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Uh yeah, yeah, it has been pretty good. You know,
- 1:31Speaker 3: that's kind of the way we talk about it all
- 1:32Speaker 3: the time. If you if you play pretty good defensively,
- 1:37Speaker 3: you know, you can give yourself a chance to win
- 1:42Speaker 3: pretty much every game you play. At least you'll have
- 1:45Speaker 3: a chance. Again, if you if you're not a good
- 1:47Speaker 3: defensive team, then half the games you play, you're not
- 1:52Speaker 3: gonna have a chance to win. So our defense is
- 1:55Speaker 3: really good. It gives us a chance to win every
- 1:57Speaker 3: single game we play. And then the rest is, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 3: depending on how many shots you make. If you make
- 2:04Speaker 3: a lot of shots, then you're gonna win by a lot.
- 2:06Speaker 3: If you don't make a lot of shots, then you
- 2:08Speaker 3: have a chance to win by a little. But because
- 2:12Speaker 3: you're not going to shoot the ball grade every night.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I mean, sometimes it looks like we will, but you're
- 2:16Speaker 3: not going to shoot the grade every night.
- 2:19Speaker 1: No. But and you're also pressing a lot more.
- 2:21Speaker 2: That's the luxury of the depth that you have first
- 2:23Speaker 2: in the Big East among the OP teams.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Nationally enforcing turnovers.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, I know you love pressing, and you know
- 2:31Speaker 2: k Kate does a good job with that. Sarah gets
- 2:34Speaker 2: her hands in passing lanes wherever she's among the league
- 2:37Speaker 2: leaders and steals. Blanca comes in along with Canine and
- 2:42Speaker 2: just totally changes the game. I mean, there's been a
- 2:44Speaker 2: couple of games where first five minutes teams soon each
- 2:47Speaker 2: other out.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Those two come in and suddenly.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's a ten, twelve to fifteen nothing run with pressure
- 2:52Speaker 2: and off you go.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But you like that pressure you always.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Have, Yeah, I mean we've always tried to play like that.
- 3:00Speaker 3: That was much easier when I first started coaching at Connecticut,
- 3:04Speaker 3: even though our players weren't as good a relative to
- 3:07Speaker 3: what we have today, it was easier to coach pressing
- 3:12Speaker 3: type defenses, and so we mixed it up. You know,
- 3:15Speaker 3: we did a lot of different things defensively, and the
- 3:20Speaker 3: kids were pretty smart that I had on my team
- 3:22Speaker 3: in the eighties, five, eighty six, eighty seven, eighty eight,
- 3:25Speaker 3: eighty nine, you know, between eighty five and ninety and
- 3:28Speaker 3: ninety one. Actually when we went to the final four,
- 3:31Speaker 3: we had a really smart team. But the thing that
- 3:35Speaker 3: allowed us to press more was if we made a
- 3:38Speaker 3: mistake and somebody made a shot, it was still only
- 3:41Speaker 3: a two. Like the three point line was just coming
- 3:43Speaker 3: in to play, and a lot of people didn't know
- 3:46Speaker 3: how to use it. You know, we did. I mean,
- 3:49Speaker 3: we took advantage of it right away. I mean that's
- 3:53Speaker 3: kind of why we got to the final four in
- 3:55Speaker 3: nineteen ninety one, as we embraced it and we took
- 3:57Speaker 3: advantage of it long before anybody else did. But you
- 4:00Speaker 3: could press back that Now when you look around the country,
- 4:02Speaker 3: nobody presses anymore because if you make a mistake, it's
- 4:06Speaker 3: a wide open three and everybody shoots doos. So you
- 4:10Speaker 3: know you got to do if you're going to do it,
- 4:12Speaker 3: you have to do it well, and you can't make
- 4:14Speaker 3: a lot of mistakes or you're going to give up
- 4:16Speaker 3: a lot of wide open threes. And that's that's a
- 4:21Speaker 3: recipe for disaster.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Is that part of the reason why the opponents are
- 4:26Speaker 2: shooting better from three because you play.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they're going to get they're going to get
- 4:31Speaker 3: more more opportunities, I think, and they're going to get
- 4:38Speaker 3: a lot more pretty decent opportunities. But they're also all
- 4:44Speaker 3: going to be rushed, and it may not be by
- 4:46Speaker 3: your best players. So you might get a lot of
- 4:49Speaker 3: open threes against us, depending on who we're playing, but
- 4:52Speaker 3: they may not be by your best player, or they
- 4:55Speaker 3: may not be at a time when you want to
- 4:57Speaker 3: take it. Because if you know we're pressing, and you
- 5:00Speaker 3: come down and you take a shot in the first
- 5:03Speaker 3: ten seconds at the shock clock and you miss, and
- 5:05Speaker 3: you keep doing that, then we're going to have the
- 5:09Speaker 3: ball a lot more times than you are. You can't win.
- 5:13Speaker 3: They can't win like that.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Start.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Individual wise, I would think at this point most improved
- 5:19Speaker 2: player in the Big East.
- 5:20Speaker 1: You could make an argument it's kk Arnold.
- 5:22Speaker 2: What she's done quarterbacking your offense, and we noticed the
- 5:25Speaker 2: difference when she missed the Providence Yeah, it was the
- 5:28Speaker 2: Providence game. She missed right with an asial fracture. There
- 5:32Speaker 2: was a collision there. But how she's managed the game,
- 5:34Speaker 2: she's shooting the ball better. Her assistant turnover ratios third
- 5:38Speaker 2: best in the country. I don't know if it's what
- 5:42Speaker 2: I mean. You hoped you would get the numbers that
- 5:44Speaker 2: you got from her, but I'm even sure you could
- 5:46Speaker 2: have envisioned this that what she's put together so far,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and it's a lot of its confidence and she's certainly
- 5:52Speaker 2: playing with a lot of confidence.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all about It's all about confidence. It's something
- 5:57Speaker 3: that we talk about all the time. A lot of
- 6:00Speaker 3: kids playing sports today they're not really confident. I mean
- 6:05Speaker 3: they act like they are and they walk around, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: and they make a three and they make all kinds
- 6:10Speaker 3: of gestures and everything, but they're really not confident. And
- 6:15Speaker 3: the way you can tell that is the many things
- 6:16Speaker 3: start going bad, it just gets worse and worse and worse.
- 6:21Speaker 3: You know that. You know, you don't want to be
- 6:25Speaker 3: sound like you're old, but I'm old, and and I
- 6:29Speaker 3: think back years ago, players failed more so failure wasn't
- 6:35Speaker 3: that big a deal to them. You know, So I
- 6:37Speaker 3: missed ten shots in a row, So what I'm just
- 6:40Speaker 3: going to take ten more? Or you know, something didn't
- 6:43Speaker 3: go right. I struck out, all right, so I'm going
- 6:46Speaker 3: to get a hit the next two times. Now, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 3: you've got a lot of kids coming to school at
- 6:51Speaker 3: a lot of levels too, that all through their growing up,
- 6:58Speaker 3: anytime there's a pop stability that they might fail, they're
- 7:01Speaker 3: kind of like removed from that situation or the possibility
- 7:06Speaker 3: of failure is kind of removed so that everybody can
- 7:11Speaker 3: sing Kumbai Ai after the game, and everybody go to
- 7:13Speaker 3: McDonald's and to stop at Dairy Queen and there's another life.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Great.
- 7:18Speaker 3: So the confidence is the number one thing to play
- 7:24Speaker 3: at Yukon.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I mean, if you're not a confident kid, you probably
- 7:28Speaker 3: are not going to stay here after a year or
- 7:30Speaker 3: two because you figure out that I'm not going to play.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So you can be less talented and have tremendous confidence
- 7:38Speaker 3: and you're gonna you're gonna be good here. You're gonna
- 7:40Speaker 3: make it. Yeah, if you're if you've got talent and
- 7:43Speaker 3: you don't have confidence in yourself, it's gonna be really
- 7:46Speaker 3: hard for somebody to play here.
- 7:47Speaker 2: All right, We're alive at the Hollywood Manchester Country Club.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It is the Yukon Women's basketball coach to show gino Oriama,
- 7:53Speaker 2: our first break back in a minute here on Learfield.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Stay with us,
