Transcript
Hello Boys and Girls heißt die.
- 0:37einsteigen will.
- 0:44So Nico, thank you very much for taking the time. I'm really excited to talk to you today.
- 0:50You too. And I guess you're excited as well, because your new book will be out in a month.
- 0:55Hello Boys and Girls. I'm really looking forward to it.
- 1:09ganze Geschichte geschrieben hast?
- 1:11Ich habe diesen Buch angefangen, 15 Jahre zu schreiben. Ich hatte einen schützlichen Kapitel.
- 1:22Und dann habe ich eine Brückwolle in 2015.
- 1:27Wow.
- 1:30I had to give the money back on the advance. There was a company out in New
- 1:34York that published it, wanted to publish it.
- 1:39So then I didn't do anything with the book.
- 1:42And then when I'd left and retired from Maiden, from touring,
- 1:48Rod, my manager, suggested I have enough time now to delve in and actually finish off this book.
- 1:55So it really is down to my manager, Rod, for inspiring me to pick up the pen,
- 2:03so to speak, and get right in again.
- 2:05I did have a friend of mine called Ben Durz help me finish it off. So hats off to him, too.
- 2:12And so, you know, he was right. Rod was right. I mean, I'm not touring with
- 2:18the boys anymore. So I had enough time to delve into getting this book finished.
- 2:51Um but uh every time I would do interviews or go on a bit of camera doing stuff
- 2:58to camera I go hello boys and girls and I thought that's very me um you know um,
- 3:20ist, You Just Never Know, Do You?
Und dann, du hast du, we like das.
- 3:34So we swapped it out and I'm happy with either one of those.
- 3:38So we call it Hello Boys and Girls. So there we are. That's it.
- 3:44While writing the book and you were looking back at over 50 years as a musician,
- 3:49you've been in bands before Iron Maiden, you've been with Trust,
- 3:52amazing band, I love them.
- 3:55Was there a period in your life that you suddenly saw different und nachdem
- 4:02du es nachdem, als du es war, war es durch es.
- 4:06Um, not so much. You know, I mean, everything I've been involved with in my
- 4:14professional career musically has been pretty, pretty special.
- 4:20You know, there's lovely stories about session work I did with various people and various albums.
- 4:25Some didn't make the book stories But looking back I was not really thinking
- 4:32Any differently From what I was feeling At the particular time With whomever
- 4:38it was I was involved with You know.
- 4:41In terms of endearment For everything from Streetwalkers To Pat Travers To McKitty,
- 4:47To Trust That was a couple of years Of fantastic,
- 5:00Und er hat Charlie Tumahai, der used to be a Bebop Deluxe, his bass player.
- 5:23that I've worked with over these years and John Plotel was the bass player with Streetwalkers,
- 5:30so looking back when I was writing these stories, you know, there wasn't anything
- 5:35that I thought, oh, you know no, I'm not going to write about that or this was
- 5:40a bad period so I basically approached everything,
- 5:44as honestly as I could and, you know,
- 5:48the feelings that I had about the earlier days Es ist nicht alles,
- 6:01You already mentioned your catchphrases, you're known as the funny guy in the
- 6:05band, you're known for being a great storyteller with a sense of humor,
- 6:11but in a band like Iron Maiden, which is a very well-documented band with a
- 6:16very well-documented history, like I think Burning Ambition,
- 6:19the movie just came out this year, last year? Yeah, it came out in May, yeah.
- 6:24So, how did you decide, well, this story has to be in the book,
- 6:28or maybe this story has been told so often that I don't have to put it in the book?
- 6:36I didn't have that in the back of my mind when I was writing the book.
- 6:39You know, I wrote it as my story. There were some stories that I was asked to
- 6:44not put in the book, some stories that I was asked not to put in the book,
- 6:48which I said I'm going to put in the book.
- 6:51Aber there were a lot of stories when you write an autobiography.
- 7:01The publishing company turned around and go there's too many words we've got to edit,
- 7:08this that and the other, this has got to go or whatever, so I had that in the
- 7:12back of my mind and I thought well there's certain stories I'd like to make
- 7:15sure were going to be covered,
- 7:19like the Aussie stories and early life with streetwalkers and you know.
- 7:27Going through my professional career. But there was a lot that wasn't actually
- 7:32made, you know, that was edited out of the book, you know. But that's okay.
- 7:37What is left behind is still the story of my life. It's just that it might not
- 7:42be chronologically precise.
- 7:45You know, like one story that I had in would have led on to another story gets nixed, you know.
- 7:51So it's just the way that publishing houses work. Und, you know,
- 7:55you can only write so many words or else you've got, like, a war and peace novel, you know.
- 8:02So, yeah, and so I just went and wrote it as it was. It got edited.
- 8:09There was a lot of mumbo-jumbo going on in it and a lot of flotsam and jets
- 8:13and that to get taken out.
- 8:15But I'm generally very satisfied with it.
- 8:19I did the audio version a couple of weeks back, about three weeks ago, finished that.
- 8:24So I told that story my story in my voice so that's cool So you also read the audiobook yourself?
- 8:33Yes Oh that's very cool Yeah it's going to be cool.
- 8:39Was there ever a moment you know I imagine you sitting at home writing your
- 8:44book and you have a story where you're like I'm not quite sure if this happened
- 8:48the way I remember Did you ever,
- 8:50ring up Steve or Bruce Did it really happen that way?
- 8:55No, I did not phone anybody up.
- 8:58In fact, there was a discrepancy that my manager actually got wrong.
- 9:07He insisted that when I did my first gig in England with Maiden, I had a suit on.
Und ich habe einen Bauen, It was my first trip to LA We're Maiden.
- 9:49Well I say the first trip We've been there before But this was when I found
- 9:52Sue So Rod was wrong there,
- 9:55And you know I obviously ran a lot of the story by Rod To get the historical
- 10:02Make sure that you know This was right Do I remember that that venue there,
- 10:09Was an arena And not a club You know that sort of thing So.
- 10:15Some of the stories Rod wanted to censor,
- 10:20And I eventually had to say to him, mate, look, you know, this is my story.
- 10:24This is my memory of these stories. Now, maybe I've got it wrong.
- 10:29But if that's the case, I will be put right later on. But at the minute,
- 10:34I'm not going to take this particular story out because you don't like it, you know.
- 10:39So, you know, that's the only collaboration with one of the band,
- 10:45if you like, associated with the band that we had.
- 10:50I didn't speak to any of the guys and go, well, did this really happen?
- 10:55I've got a pretty good memory for stuff. You know how it is though,
- 11:00Danny, that when you have something that's happened 20 years ago and we're talking
- 11:05about it together, that's something that you and I happened,
- 11:08you might go, well, I don't remember it like that.
- 11:09Don't you remember so-and-so and so-and-so and you go, oh yeah, I can get that.
- 11:59down as in the oven you want to go up or you want to go down and he's dropping
- 12:03all these tablets over the floor,
- 12:05anyway when I saw him back in 2004 or 2005 we were doing this,
- 12:12it was a charity called Walter Aid I drew me with a drum kit and stuff and the
- 12:19caricature of myself he did something else on a shirt and it was the launch of this particular.
- 12:27T-shirt Artworked by a bunch of different Aussie und ich sind zusammen Und ich dachte,
- 12:32ich will never remember this Und ich sat mit ihm und ich sagte,
- 12:35ja, do you remember Die Party we had in Ich denke wir in Finnland somewhere,
- 12:48remember?
- 12:51Und er sagte, ja, du warst mich Wir hatten eine gute Party Und dann sagte,
- 12:56du remember mich saving your life,
- 13:00And I went, you what? And this is no word of a lie. And he told me we were coming
- 13:05back on the ferry from Calais back to England. And it was a stormy night.
- 13:10And he said, we were really out of it. And I met you. I saw you on the back of the boat.
- 13:18And they had the railing. And you were about to fall over. And I grabbed you.
- 13:23I don't remember that. I do remember being on a boat coming back from Calais. But.
- 13:30You know, it was one of those blind drunk moments. And I said to him, well, thanks for that.
- 13:35So Aussie saved my life, you know. And I believe him because he remembered,
- 13:41which I didn't think he would, the night of the party that we had in my room with Streetwalkers.
- 13:47I see that. That's a great story. I haven't heard that before, actually. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:52It's in the book. You haven't read it, have you? Yeah, I really look forward
- 13:55for the book, exactly for stories like that.
- 13:58Do you think there will be stories, or is there any particular story in the
- 14:02book where you're curious about what the other band members will say about the story?
- 14:11Not really, no. I mean...
- 14:16I don't know how Steve will feel about my side of the story about Blaze,
- 14:22the Blaze years that we had.
- 14:24I have very, very fond memories with Blaze.
- 14:28We were like, you know, I was like his Salagate Granddad when he was,
- 14:32I mean, I've been the oldest guy in the band.
- 14:35And he and I used to hang around a lot together and go to dinner and whatnot.
- 15:09that we were doing with him.
- 15:13Evil That Men Do and stuff like that they were,
- 15:18songs that needed to be down a level so I got to in one hand I'm sort of very
- 15:24sad about the way he performed some of those songs and my feeling of,
- 15:29I want to leave the band I don't want to be doing this it's not fair to the
- 15:31fans so on and so forth and,
- 15:57Und was ich fühlte, was ich durchfühlt, persönlich in meinen Gefühlen, ist, was...
- 16:03Ja, das ist sehr interessant, eigentlich. Ich habe auch von Bruce's Biografie
- 16:09gelesen.
- 16:31Nico erwarten, so that they won't simply get from just reading the book?
- 16:37Well, they get to see this in person, you know, the good-looking bloke from
- 16:41the band. I mean, that's got to be worth summing, isn't it, just to come up and say, oh, no.
- 16:49You're going to get the stories as.
- 16:53You know, we're going to, I don't know, we've not really worked out a program as such.
- 17:00I do know this, the second half is going to be two halves, two 45-minute sets.
- 17:05The second set, I'm going to take a leaf out of Bruce's book What he did on
- 17:09his speaking tour Which is going to get little,
- 17:13index cards and pens on the chairs And people are going to write a question,
- 17:18Whether it's related to the book or not, it doesn't matter They're going to
- 17:21ask me a question, write it down on a piece of paper Put their names down, stick it in a hat,
- 17:27Second half, I'm going to be pulling You know, this is my intention Is to pull
- 17:31a question out the hat If I don't like it, I'll throw it away, whatever.
- 17:37No, you know, and open the floor up to questions and answers.
- 17:42But the first half we're thinking it'll probably be, I'm going to have a host
- 17:45with me. So there'll be two of us on stage probably.
- 17:50We may change that, but that's how we're thinking of it at the minute. And then.
- 17:55They'll either, you know, groom me into reading a chapter oder fragen eine Frage
- 18:08Und, you know, ich könnte nicht ad-lib,
- 18:42reading stories from the book yeah,
- 18:47you spend most of your life on stage with a huge drum kit right in front of
- 18:51you which is like a barrier between you and the audience maybe and,
- 18:55I don't think that you are but are you a little bit nervous so to not have a
- 19:01drum kit between you and the audience so to be like in the front,
- 19:07no mate I'm actually less nervous about it because I'm not having to play a drum kit, you know.
- 19:15No, I mean, my drums are my domain. That's where I've lived for 50 years professionally,
- 19:21and actually more than that. But, you know, when I get behind my drum set, I know I'm in control.
- 19:29Out front, in front of people without a drum kit, I'm not in control, but,
- 19:33I'm used to public speaking and being, you know, being that,
- 19:56I'm happy to be able to be involved with a speaking tour like this because it
- 20:02gives me a chance to meet probably, I'm hoping there'll be a mixture in the
- 20:07audience, not just of Iron Maiden fans.
- 20:10Not just Nico fans.
- 20:12I would like to see families of people or, you know, mums and dads have gone
- 20:18out and bought the book and go, oh, this bloke's quite interesting.
- 20:20Oh, he's doing a speaking tour. We're going to have a word, you know,
- 20:23going to see what it's all about.
- 22:00how does an ordinary week in the life of Nico McBride actually look like when
- 22:05your life isn't built around touring with Iron Maiden anymore?
- 22:08Well, I get up in the morning. When I wake up, it's not easy,
- 22:12about 7.30, 8 o'clock, I'll get up, feed the cat, feed my sniffly puppies.
- 22:21Sit down, answer me e-mails or have a look on me e-mails and then I go and sit.
- 22:28And watch a lot of Netflix or Prime Video. I like a lot of these series that have come out.
- 22:36And I watch a bit of telly and then I don't play golf anymore because I've got a bit of a bad back.
- 22:42So if I do go out, I play nine holes and that's about it for me nowadays.
- 22:47Und dann ich muss nach dem Restaurant gehen, sehen was was going on down there und,
- 22:52you know, kick mein Head in the door und I eat too many Ribs at the minute so
- 22:57I've got a bit of a pouch going on so,
- 22:59you know, that's a typical day for me, a typical week,
- 23:04you know, I'm just relaxing more and I've learnt,
- 23:09from taking a step back from the band, I'm enjoying being at home but I also
- 23:46So I keep, obviously with the book coming out, I'm in touch with,
- 23:52still in touch with Roller Lott and Dave Schatz at our office and Delphine Nizette.
- 23:58She's amazing.
- 24:00I've got a great crew behind me that's still the maiden family,
- 24:06if you like, the Phantom Music people.
- 24:08And they've worked so strongly with HarperCollins, who published my book for me.
- 24:22I'm not sure of the date. It's next month sometime.
- 24:27Yeah. It's funny that you mentioned your restaurant because I told yesterday
- 24:31a friend of mine that I will have the interview with you and he's a huge Iron Maiden fan as well.
- 24:35And he said, tell him I was at his restaurant and tell him I had the best coleslaw
- 24:40in my whole life there. Oh, brilliant. Oh, fantastic.
- 24:44You know what? Yeah, so many people love our food and I love supplying it.
- 24:51The opportunity of that I mean we
- 24:53don't make money there I'm an employment exchange and I'm happy with that,
- 24:58And I'm happy that I have something Other than the other Peripheral stuff To
- 25:04keep me occupied And I've got my dear friend and partner Mitch Tan and his wife
- 25:09Ivy They kind of run it for me,
- 25:11They do the day to day graft And keep the accounts,
- 25:15I'm just a face Although I'm handsome.
- 25:46Band und du bist ein Band You're just not touring anymore with them and you
- 25:52recently said that you'd be delighted to play on another Our Maiden album,
- 25:57provided the material wasn't too,
- 26:02well, you could play it physically, let's say that way.
- 26:05Have you spoken to Steve about it, like, hey, let's write some songs that I
- 26:11can play or is that something for the future? Because they're on tour. No.
- 26:18It's a moot point right now. There's no, I spoke to Steve last week.
- 26:22I didn't broach the fact that he had doing that. And when I saw him in the restaurant,
- 26:26he came to my restaurant in March, February, March, earlier this year.
- 26:30And we sat and had a good chat. And I said to him, you know,
- 26:34are you going to, you know, you've got like some time off next year.
- 26:39Are you going to think about doing a new record? And he went,
- 26:42no, I haven't thought about it, Nick.
- 26:44So having said that doesn't mean to say there may not be an album It's just
- 26:50that he's not prepared yet as then to think about doing a record I know Bruce would like to do one,
- 27:00But you've got to bear in mind, Danny If they make an album,
- 27:06right, you've got to go out and tour it,
- 27:10So, there's another couple of years down the line to, first of all,
- 27:14you've got to get the album made, get it made and put in this,
- 27:19you know, distributed and all that, and then that's more time,
- 27:22more time, then you've got to go tour it.
- 27:25Not to say the fact that they don't want to go out and tour,
- 27:27but, you know, we're all getting long in the tooth now.
- 27:31And, you know, these are high-energy shows. I'm not saying that they're going
- 27:35to retire, but here's the thing, you know, if you do another record,
- 27:37you're going to have to go out and tour it.
Would it be, from a musician's point of view,
- 28:08would you, like finding a different way to play, actually, would it be like
- 28:13an interesting creative challenge for you or more like a limitation?
- 28:17No, it's a challenge because I had to do that for two years.
- 28:21You know, from when I had the stroke in 23, I went off and did two tours with
- 28:25the band, you know, and I had to compromise some of the songs,
- 28:30like for the classic would be the intro to Trooper.
- 28:35I couldn't play that feel. My hand just wouldn't allow me to do the speed of that drum feel.
- 28:42So I had to compromise. I did more triplets. So, you know.
- 28:48Just taking a feel from in the song, in the verse song, I actually put that feel at the intro.
- 29:55Can you listen to it as music or is there like the drummer in you that says,
- 29:58well, I should have played the drum fill differently?
- 30:02No, I've never really looked at our records. I look at it as a whole.
- 30:09I mean, once I've done my performance, that's it. I don't go back and think,
- 30:13oh, I wish I'd have played that particular part in this particular fill or on
- 30:18an offbeat, you know, like a different drum part.
- 30:40das bestimmte Film Aber nein, nein,
- 30:52I was really happy to read that interview with you because you recently picked
- 30:55A Matter of Life and Death as your,
- 30:57favorite Iron Maiden album which for me is one of the most underrated albums
- 31:02in the whole discography,
- 31:04I have some sort of nostalgia for it because it was the first Iron Maiden record
- 31:08that came out when I got into Iron Maiden and it was the first record I bought
- 31:12for myself so I was listening to it like every day for months and,
- 31:18what I wanted to know is like,
- 31:52he's important and then of course we took that record and when we finished it,
- 32:00and we thought what don't we play live,
- 32:04it was like every track is a monster track,
- 32:10and that was what initiated the decision was not to leave anything off that
- 32:16album because they're all great songs so we'd do the whole thing und es ist
- 32:38You know, it's just the culmination of how I felt when I was in the studio making
- 32:44that record with the guys and the fact that we took it from the studio and we
- 32:48went to and performed the whole thing live.
- 32:51It was just immense. And that's why I chose that album as my favorite all-time maiden album.
- 32:57But then I go back to Book of Souls and I look at Book of Souls and I think,
- 33:01you know, the songs on there, you know, the title track is just immense.
- 33:08You know, Red and the Black, oh, you know, Tears of a Clown.
- 33:11Oh, you can't bet. And of course you've got Empire of the Clowns.
- 33:17You know, so in terms of asking, I have to say Matter of Life and Death just
- 33:23because it spoke to me in a different way because of the way we recorded it,
- 33:27the time that we had in the studio.
- 33:30We've always enjoyed ourselves in the studio, by the way, but that was something,
- 33:34magical about that album, you know.
- 34:02Oh blimey, just take your pick mate.
- 34:08I would have to say Hallowed Be Thy Name live versions Any of my live versions
- 34:14of Hallowed It's my favourite song that Steve has ever written Next to When
- 34:20the Wild Wind Blows That's another one of my favourite songs,
- 34:26I say favourite These are just by preference This one I prefer more than the
- 34:32other They're all great songs,
- 34:35Everything that Steve Harris writes Is just immense Hell on Earth,
- 34:39what a song that is The Parchment, that's my favourite song Of Asenjutsu,
- 34:45But Hell I Be Thy Name Life That song possesses me And I always play it quite
- 34:51quick It's nowhere near the tempo That they recorded it at Off of a piece of Number of the Beast But.
- 35:01Live is just a magic about that song. The whole solo section is layered,
- 35:06you know, there's three solo sections of guitars that just, I just go and it possesses me.
- 35:13Anyway, that's my favorite live version of Halo.
- 35:16All right. So I will play that song probably in the Dortmund version of 2003, I guess.
- 35:22Very, very important live album for me as well. Oh, yeah. So,
- 35:26we're done with the interview. Thank you very much.
- 35:29I think we've got some minutes left. I just want to take the chance.
- 35:33And thank you for all the music, because you've probably heard that a lot,
- 35:37but Our Maiden really influenced me a lot.
- 36:08Wonderful, Mr. Steve Harris You can't go wrong listening to him And you know,
- 36:13that's wonderful And it's endearing Because that's inspired you to become a musician,
- 36:19And live a dream As well You're doing your radio stuff as well But.
- 36:26You've got the thrill Of getting out there and playing in front of people It's magic Isn't it mate?
- 36:31It's the best thing Absolutely.
- 36:36Also we're looking for a new drummer so if you're free hey mate,
- 36:39you know you pay my FRO, I'll be there alright yeah, thank you very much for
- 36:48your time, it was amazing I will never forget this day in my life.
