- 0:24Well, hello there, everyone, and welcome once again
- 0:27to the ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life
- 0:31show.
- 0:31It is so great to be with you.
- 0:33Sorry for some of the delays we had
- 0:35the other day.
- 0:36We have fired OneStream Live, as some of
- 0:41you were following and wondering what happened.
- 0:44Well, they decided that they were going to
- 0:45do an upgrade, not notify any of their
- 0:48subscribers, and then they kept changing the time,
- 0:51and yesterday's production was terrible, so it was
- 0:55so bad that we actually had to go
- 0:57to audio only.
- 0:59But the audio, even though it said that
- 1:01it was receiving it, it didn't, and it
- 1:04was just a mess.
- 1:05So I fired them, and we're now on
- 1:07with Restream Live.
- 1:09So really, really grateful to be with them,
- 1:13and I hope you guys enjoy this.
- 1:15If this is your very first time here,
- 1:18I want to take the opportunity to say
- 1:19thank you, and of course, I want to
- 1:22say the words welcome.
- 1:24Of course, I want to say thank you,
- 1:26and yes, I want to say welcome to
- 1:28you.
- 1:28It's so great to have you here if
- 1:29it's your very first time.
- 1:30If you've been here one time, five times,
- 1:33ten times, or maybe even more, I'd like
- 1:36to say thank you, but I'd also like
- 1:39to say the words welcome back.

- 2:02Feel free to go get yourself a snack,
- 2:04a beverage, or something, and we'll kick this
- 2:06show off.
- 2:07Are you guys ready for me to kick
- 2:08the show off?
- 2:09I know you are.
- 2:10We have a lot to share with you
- 2:13guys today, and I think you're going to
- 2:16really, really enjoy it.
- 2:18But the thing with these shows is that
- 2:20they are comprehensive, right?
- 2:24They help us become a better version of
- 2:27ourselves every single day, but we have to
- 2:30lean into what that is and how that
- 2:33actually works.
- 2:34And I think that's a real problem for
- 2:39a lot of people, okay?
- 2:41And so that's what we do.
- 2:44We break down these things into small things
- 2:47that people can understand, and we give you
- 2:49actionable insights that you can actually do stuff
- 2:51with.
- 2:52I think that's a real cool thing.
- 2:54Again, a very big warm welcome to everyone.
- 2:57I think it's so great to have you
- 2:59here with me and to do this amazing
- 3:02show with you.
- 3:03If you don't know who I am by
- 3:05now, I'm Jon Seymourly.
- 3:07I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 3:09I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 3:13host, coach, keynote speaker, a graduate student at
- 3:17Montclair State University, a passionate lifelong learner, and
- 3:21so grateful now, ladies and gentlemen, to be
- 3:23a published author.
- 3:25Yes, it's so grateful to be with all
- 3:27of you here and being a published author.
- 3:30I am truly, truly, extremely, extremely grateful for
- 3:35that opportunity.
- 3:37So again, welcome, everyone.
- 3:39It's great to have you here.
- 3:40Today, I'm talking about Stop Sacrificing Your Life
- 3:45to Impress Other People.
- 3:47It is series five, show 36, episode number
- 3:50five.
- 3:52So there's nothing wrong with achievement.
- 3:54There's nothing wrong with wanting to succeed, build
- 3:57something meaningful, earn more, or become better at
- 4:00what you do.
- 4:01The problem begins when your life becomes a
- 4:04performance design primarily to impress other people.
- 4:09And I think that's a problem for a
- 4:11lot of people because their life is like
- 4:14on stage.
- 4:15I think that's a big problem.
- 4:16So let's move forward.
- 4:18So let's get to our 30 points to
- 4:19help you guys understand this.
- 4:21Number one, protect what cannot be replaced.
- 4:26Some things can be, oh, rebuilt.
- 4:30Money can be earned again.
- 4:32Possessions can be replaced.
- 4:33But time and certain relationships and meaningful moments
- 4:38don't always give you that opportunity.
- 4:41Know what deserves protection in your life.
- 4:44Stop sacrificing.
- 4:45Number two, relationships for appearances.
- 4:48A life that looks impressive from the outside
- 4:51can still feel empty inside.
- 4:55Don't neglect people who genuinely care about you
- 4:59just to impress people, okay, who will barely
- 5:03even know you.
- 5:05Number three, know what deserves your time.
- 5:11Time is one of our most limited and
- 5:13precious resources.
- 5:14Every yes takes time from something else that
- 5:18you wanted to do.
- 5:19Decide consciously what deserves that investment.
- 5:23Instead of allowing everyone else to decide for
- 5:27you, make that choice now.
- 5:30Number four, don't trade peace for status.
- 5:33Status may attract attention, but attention isn't the
- 5:38same as peace.
- 5:39If maintaining an image constantly leaves you anxious,
- 5:43exhausted, or pretending, ask whether the status is
- 5:48worth its price, okay?
- 5:51Stop spending energy proving your worth.
- 5:55You don't need to turn every conversation into
- 5:57evidence of your value.
- 6:00Let your work, character, consistency, and contribution speak
- 6:05over time.
- 6:08Constantly proving yourself can become exhausting, and yes,
- 6:12guys, it can lead to burnout.
- 6:15Number six, protect your health while pursuing success.
- 6:20If you don't have your health, you definitely
- 6:22don't have your wealth.
- 6:24Achievement becomes far less meaningful if you're destroying
- 6:28yourself to obtain it.
- 6:30Sustainable success should leave room for taking care
- 6:33of the person responsible for creating it.
- 6:35I think sometimes people miss that whole concept.
- 6:39Number seven, give important people real attention.
- 6:44Being physically present isn't always enough.
- 6:47Put the distractions down.
- 6:49Sometimes you have to do that.
- 6:52Listen, ask the questions, pay attention.
- 6:56The people who matter deserve more than whatever
- 7:00attention remains after everything else goes by.
- 7:04Number eight, stop treating your life like a
- 7:07resume.
- 7:08Your life is more than just a collection
- 7:11of accomplishments, tiles, credentials, and milestones.
- 7:16Accomplishments matter, but they shouldn't become your entire
- 7:20identity or your whole life.
- 7:22Number nine, know what money cannot restore or
- 7:27buy.
- 7:28Money is an important tool, but it has
- 7:30limits.
- 7:31It cannot automatically restore lost time.
- 7:33Rebuild every damaged relationship, recreate missed experiences, or
- 7:38purchase genuine trust.
- 7:41But some people figure that out the hard
- 7:43way, and then they lose more than money.
- 7:48Number 10, protect your integrity when opportunities appear.
- 7:53An impressive opportunity is invaluable if accepting it
- 7:56requires becoming someone you don't respect.
- 7:59Don't allow ambition to convince you that your
- 8:01principles are negotiable.
- 8:04Number 11, stop buying things to impress strangers.
- 8:07Before making a purchase, primarily for appearance, ask
- 8:11yourself who you're trying to impress.
- 8:13Don't build financial pressure simply to create an
- 8:16image for people who aren't responsible for paying
- 8:19your bills.
- 8:21Number 12, choose experiences you genuinely value.
- 8:25Don't choose experiences simply because they'll look impressive
- 8:29online.
- 8:30Do things because they're meaningful, enjoyable, interesting, educational,
- 8:34or important to you.
- 8:36I think that's something that a lot of
- 8:37people today, they miss that.
- 8:41And then by the time they realize it,
- 8:43guess what happens, guys?
- 8:44It is way too late for them to
- 8:47do anything in their life.
- 8:48I think that's a very important thing for
- 8:53us to really pay attention to.
- 8:56Number 13, please make room for people who
- 8:59matter in your life.
- 9:01A full calendar isn't automatically meaningful.
- 9:05Leave room for conversations, relationships, friendships, family, and
- 9:08people who make your life richer.
- 9:13Stop performing happiness because that's not just life.
- 9:19You don't have to convince everyone that everything
- 9:21is perfect in your life.
- 9:23A polished public image and a meaningful private
- 9:25life are two different distinct things.
- 9:28Build the second one and build it right.
- 9:31Number 15, protect your private life from public
- 9:35pressure.
- 9:36Not everything needs to become content.
- 9:39Not every achievement needs an announcement.
- 9:41Not every personal moment needs an audience.
- 9:44Some things just gain value from remaining personal,
- 9:49from being genuine, just being who you are.
- 9:53A lot of times I get on the
- 9:54camera to do stuff, and they're even, let's
- 9:59say, more laid back than the show.
- 10:01I get on and I talk about something
- 10:03I'm doing or where I am, and it's
- 10:04not polished, it's not edited.
- 10:07You get the genuine me too here, but
- 10:09when I'm doing like a short reel or
- 10:11what I'm doing live on site, it's a
- 10:14little different.
- 10:15I turn my camera on and I link
- 10:17it to our studio, and I push out
- 10:20to our audience, and it's pretty amazing.
- 10:22Number 16, know when ambition has taken too
- 10:25much from you.
- 10:27Ambition can be powerful, but periodically examine its
- 10:30costs.
- 10:31If every relationship, evening, weekend, and personal priority
- 10:35is constantly sacrificed, something may need to change
- 10:40in your life because if it doesn't, something's
- 10:42going to break.
- 10:43Number 17, give your attention where it matters.
- 10:49Give your attention where it matters.
- 10:51Attention is an investment, okay?
- 10:54Notice where your attention is going.
- 10:57Don't give your best attention to distractions while
- 11:01giving the people and priorities you value whatever
- 11:05remains.
- 11:07And again, that's a hard lesson that most
- 11:09people never learn.
- 11:10They learn it later in life, but again,
- 11:12after they've learned it, they've learned too much.
- 11:16They've learned too much, and that too much,
- 11:19guys, I think it's a very, very big
- 11:25problem for a lot of people to understand.
- 11:29So let's be mindful of that.
- 11:33And these are very, very important things.
- 11:38And I want you to understand what's going
- 11:43on, okay?
- 11:44I think that's a very important thing.
- 11:46And I know a lot of you are
- 11:47going to say, hey, John, this is not
- 11:50for me, but it is for you, okay?
- 11:52It really is for you.
- 11:54And I think that's something we have to
- 11:55think about.
- 12:02This can be hard for some people, okay?
- 12:10Very hard, right?
- 12:13Hard enough that maybe it doesn't matter, okay?
- 12:21I think that's an important piece.
- 12:29I think that's something a lot of people
- 12:30just don't get.
- 12:33They're just totally on a different wavelength, okay?
- 12:40And that can be hard, guys.
- 12:46It can be very, very hard for people
- 12:50to understand these things.
- 12:55Being seen doesn't automatically make something important.
- 12:58Some incredibly meaningful work happens quietly without applause,
- 13:02followers, recognition, or even any glimpse of public
- 13:07attention.
- 13:08Number 19, choose substance over image.
- 13:11Every single time, you have to do that,
- 13:13guys.
- 13:14You have to choose substance over that.
- 13:16Or you're the one that's really going to
- 13:19be in a problem.
- 13:22You're the one that's going to wish this
- 13:25didn't go that way.
- 13:26You're going to wish that you gave it
- 13:28the care and the attention that it really
- 13:30deserved, right?
- 13:32I think that's an important piece.
- 13:36But again, I get why some people will
- 13:39get confused because they're taking what other people
- 13:42are saying, but they're not necessarily doing what
- 13:43they need to do.
- 13:45So I think that's another important thing that
- 13:47many people, again, don't realize on their own
- 13:50behalf, okay?
- 13:54That's very important, guys, to understand.
- 13:57Number 19, choose substance over image.
- 14:01Build the skills instead of merely looking knowledgeable.
- 14:05Build the relationship instead of displaying it.
- 14:08Build the business instead of pretending everything is
- 14:10successful.
- 14:10Substance lasts longer than the presentation.
- 14:14In other words, if you want to show
- 14:18somebody what you're doing, you show them by
- 14:22what you're doing.
- 14:23You don't brag about it by telling people.
- 14:26You show them with what you really have.
- 14:29Number 20, don't sacrifice yourself to maintain appearances.
- 14:33If maintaining an image requires constant pretending, overspending,
- 14:38exhaustion, or hiding who you actually are, well,
- 14:42that image has become too expensive in the
- 14:45long run.
- 14:46And I think some people will miss this
- 14:48time and time again.
- 14:50Why?
- 14:51Because they think the solution is to impress
- 14:54others.
- 14:55But really all that does is cost you
- 14:57money and get you disappointed in the end.
- 15:00Number 21, let your values determine what stays.
- 15:05When life becomes crowded, use your values as
- 15:08a filter.
- 15:09Ask what genuinely matters and what merely occupies
- 15:13space because you feel expected to keep it,
- 15:18okay?
- 15:20Stop measuring your worth through possessions, number 22.
- 15:26What you own may say something about your
- 15:29preferences, but it's important to understand it doesn't
- 15:32determine your human value.
- 15:35Possessions are things you have.
- 15:37They aren't who you actually are, number 23.
- 15:42Invest in the memories.
- 15:43Not only the milestones, there's so much to
- 15:45enjoy in life with the memories.
- 15:48Milestones matter, but so do ordinary experiences.
- 15:52A conversation, a meal, a trip, laughter, learning
- 15:55something new or spending time with someone important,
- 15:58they become more memorable than any other achievement
- 16:02you have.
- 16:03So let's enjoy those milestones, but let's enjoy
- 16:06the memories, okay?
- 16:09That's important to know.
- 16:11Number 24, know when enough really is enough.
- 16:16If the finish line constantly moves, you're never
- 16:19going to arrive there.
- 16:20Define what enough means for you.
- 16:23Otherwise, you can spend your entire life accumulating
- 16:26without ever experiencing satisfaction because if somebody keeps
- 16:29moving the bar or the line and you
- 16:31never can get to it, I feel that's
- 16:33a big problem for a lot of people
- 16:36to understand, okay?
- 16:38I think that's an important thing for other
- 16:42people, again, to understand.
- 16:45And I think if we're cognizant of these
- 16:47things, we can really change who we are
- 16:53and what we're doing.
- 16:54But again, this takes time, guys.
- 16:57This takes a lot of time and it
- 17:01takes intention.
- 17:03Takes intention.
- 17:06So, you know, you have to understand this
- 17:11or you're going to get lost.
- 17:14Spend your whole entire life accumulating and then
- 17:16suddenly the goal isn't there anymore.
- 17:21Number 25, protect the parts of life success
- 17:27should serve.
- 17:32Number 25, something we should know is that
- 17:36success should help us build a better life.
- 17:39It shouldn't require destroying everything you wanted.
- 17:43Success to improve.
- 17:45Remember why you're working so hard in the
- 17:48first place.
- 17:48You should be working harder.
- 17:49You should be working smarter, ladies and gentlemen.
- 17:52Smarter means working intentionally.
- 17:55It means doing the things that are actually
- 17:59going to bring a return, right?
- 18:01If you keep doing things just to stay
- 18:03busy, that might sound nice, but you're never
- 18:06going to get to success and that's going
- 18:10to make you sad.
- 18:12Number 26, stop chasing admiration from people you
- 18:15don't know.
- 18:17Don't surrender your peace trying to win approval
- 18:19from strangers.
- 18:21Their admiration may be temporary, conditional, or completely
- 18:26irrelevant to the life you're actually living.
- 18:29That's important, guys.
- 18:32Number 27, build something meaningful behind the scenes.
- 18:37You don't have to show it to people.
- 18:40Character develops when nobody is watching.
- 18:42I've said this before.
- 18:43Relationships deepen privately.
- 18:45Skills improve through unseen practice.
- 18:48Some of your most important work will never
- 18:51receive applause, but it will be the work
- 18:54that gets you to success.
- 19:00We work on ourselves in private.
- 19:02That almost always filters to the public world,
- 19:06but it's not always obvious how that happens,
- 19:11right?
- 19:12It's not obvious how that happens, and I
- 19:14think those are important things to understand, right?
- 19:19They're important things to understand, and if we
- 19:22understand what they are, then maybe you're going
- 19:24to say to me, hey, John, this doesn't
- 19:26quite make sense to me anymore, or this
- 19:29isn't what I want, and I get that
- 19:32it may not be what you want, but
- 19:33I think the most important thing is knowing
- 19:35that you can make the change in your
- 19:38life, okay?
- 19:40I'm not going to tell you that it's
- 19:41going to be easy.
- 19:42No, I'm not going to tell you it's
- 19:43going to be easy.
- 19:44Of course not, but it's important, guys.
- 19:47It absolutely is important, all right?
- 19:53So something I want you to understand, number
- 19:5528, your life doesn't need to impress everyone.
- 20:00If you're trying to figure out how to
- 20:01impress everyone, well, you're missing the mark.
- 20:04You could be successful sometimes, but you're going
- 20:07to fall more than you win because you're
- 20:11always trying to impress somebody who really may
- 20:15not even have any value in your life,
- 20:17but you think that's what it's all about.
- 20:19See, different people value different things.
- 20:23Trying to impress everyone is impossible, and that
- 20:27assignment will just burn you out.
- 20:29Build a life aligned with your values instead
- 20:31of constantly adjusting yourself for an audience.
- 20:37That's not being genuine.
- 20:38That's not being authentic, is it?
- 20:41I don't think so.
- 20:44Number 29, guys.
- 20:48What matters most rarely needs an audience.
- 20:55Integrity doesn't require applause.
- 20:58Genuine friendship doesn't need spectators.
- 21:04Peace doesn't need likes.
- 21:09Meaning doesn't require public validation.
- 21:12Some of life's richest experiences happen quietly, happen
- 21:17in a moment, a moment that maybe you're
- 21:19not even aware of, okay?
- 21:23That's important to understand.
- 21:31That's really important.
- 21:39Does that make sense to you?
- 21:47Maybe it doesn't make sense to you.
- 21:54Does it?
- 21:55I'm just asking you a question.
- 22:03I think that's an important piece, guys.
- 22:07That piece is something a lot of people
- 22:09just don't get, okay?
- 22:15I think that's something hard for people to
- 22:18understand, but I get why that can hurt
- 22:23some people.
- 22:26Number 30, never trade something priceless for something
- 22:29impressive.
- 22:30This is the point I want you to
- 22:32remember.
- 22:33Before sacrificing something important for achievement, status, money,
- 22:39attention, or approval, understand exactly what you're trading.
- 22:45You know, a wise gentleman said something.
- 22:48I think it was last year.
- 22:49He was retiring from a large publicly traded
- 22:50company.
- 22:51And all these younger people from college wanted
- 22:54to get his position.
- 22:55He had one of the top financial positions
- 22:57in the company.
- 22:59And they're all lined up.
- 23:00He says, any of you can have my
- 23:02position if you're willing to sacrifice.
- 23:09And they're like, sure.
- 23:11I don't know my daughter's favorite color.
- 23:15I don't even know when my son hit
- 23:18his first home run.
- 23:22I missed my grandson's recital.
- 23:27And I couldn't even tell you what their,
- 23:33let's say it was an event.
- 23:35I couldn't even tell you where they had
- 23:36their wedding.
- 23:38He said, these are the things you're going
- 23:40to miss in life if you're going to
- 23:43commit solely to the job.
- 23:44So I'm not saying not to commit it,
- 23:46but if you commit, you're going to miss
- 23:48an awful lot about what is going to
- 23:52go on in your life.
- 23:52Are you willing to miss that much?
- 23:57Most people say yes.
- 23:59But then when you find out what you're
- 24:00missing, you're like, I didn't really sign up
- 24:02for this, right?
- 24:04I didn't sign up for this.
- 24:08That's important.
- 24:13And like I said, it's important to understand
- 24:18this.
- 24:21So never trade something priceless for something impressive.
- 24:24And priceless doesn't just mean money.
- 24:26It could just mean the value, your life,
- 24:29family.
- 24:30This is the point I want you to
- 24:32remember.
- 24:33Before sacrificing something, like I told you, important
- 24:35for an achievement status, money or attention or
- 24:37approval, understand exactly what you're trading.
- 24:41Some exchanges aren't worth making.
- 24:43Don't trade your integrity for an opportunity.
- 24:45Don't trade meaningful relationships for appearances.
- 24:48Don't trade your peace simply to look successful.
- 24:52Don't trade your identity for acceptance.
- 24:55And don't trade years of your life, chasing
- 24:57admiration from people who aren't actually living your
- 25:00life.
- 25:00This connects directly to our weekly topic.
- 25:04Stop living a life you never chose.
- 25:08Because one of the easiest ways to accidentally
- 25:10build somebody else's life is to spend your
- 25:15time trying to satisfy somebody else's definition of
- 25:18success.
- 25:21Easiest ways to accidentally build somebody else's life
- 25:25is when you spend your time trying to
- 25:28satisfy somebody else's success.
- 25:30You see what everybody else is buying.
- 25:33You see what they're achieving.
- 25:35You see the titles, announcements, vacations, houses, cars,
- 25:39followers, businesses, milestones.
- 25:41And comparisons quickly begin to form in your
- 25:44mind and writing your goals for you.
- 25:49That's when you need to ask a powerful
- 25:51question.
- 25:52Would I still want this if nobody else
- 25:55ever knew I had it?
- 25:57Would you still pursue the goal if you
- 25:59couldn't post about it?
- 26:00Would you still buy the thing if nobody
- 26:02saw it?
- 26:03Would you still want the title if nobody
- 26:05was impressed by it?
- 26:07Would you still choose this direction if nobody
- 26:09applauded?
- 26:10Ah, these questions can expose the difference between
- 26:14something you genuinely value and something you're pursuing
- 26:17primarily for validation.
- 26:18Success isn't the enemy.
- 26:20Ambition isn't the enemy.
- 26:22Money isn't the enemy.
- 26:23Recognition isn't automatically bad.
- 26:25The issue is what you're willing to sacrifice
- 26:28to obtain them.
- 26:29Your life has limited time.
- 26:31Your attention is limited.
- 26:32Your energy is limited.
- 26:33So spend those resources intentionally on the things
- 26:37you want.
- 26:37Build things you're proud of.
- 26:40Pursue meaningful goals.
- 26:42Become excellent at what you do.
- 26:44But don't you dare become so busy creating
- 26:47an impressive life that you forget to actually
- 26:49live it.
- 26:50Protect your relationships.
- 26:51Protect your integrity.
- 26:52Protect your peace.
- 26:53Protect your health.
- 26:55Protect the moments that won't come around again.
- 26:58And remember that what matters most may never
- 27:02become the thing that gets the most attention.
- 27:04Sometimes success is quieter than that.
- 27:06Sometimes success is knowing who you are, who
- 27:10nobody is watching, okay?
- 27:12Sometimes it's having people in your life who
- 27:14know the real you.
- 27:15Sometimes it's being able to go to sleep,
- 27:18knowing you didn't compromise your integrity to get
- 27:20ahead.
- 27:21Sometimes it's having enough.
- 27:23Sometimes it's simply being present for a moment
- 27:25you know you can never recreate.
- 27:27So here's the question I want to leave
- 27:29you with today.
- 27:31What are you currently sacrificing?
- 27:34And is what you're receiving in return generally
- 27:37worth it?
- 27:39I think that's the real question.
- 27:41Look carefully at the answer because you can
- 27:43always earn another dollar.
- 27:45You can pursue another opportunity.
- 27:47You can set another goal.
- 27:48But some things are priceless precisely because they
- 27:51cannot simply be replaced.

- 28:01It needs to mean something to you.
- 28:04Choose substance over image.
- 28:05Meaning over unnecessary approval.

- 28:10nearly looks impressive.
