- 0:26Speaker 2: Yes, we'll go through a true process for the defensive
- 0:28Speaker 2: coordinator spot. We're really excited to go through that over
- 0:30Speaker 2: the course of the next few days and we'll we'll
- 0:33Speaker 2: find an excellent candidate.
- 0:36Speaker 1: That is a Saints head coach Kellen Moore. When he
- 0:39Speaker 1: was introduced on Thursday to the New Orleans media, obviously
- 0:43Speaker 1: a big part of the conversation is building his staff
- 0:47Speaker 1: and he'll have to hire an offensive coordinator and a
- 0:50Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. And in the last twenty four hours or so,
- 0:53Speaker 1: there have been almost a dozen names mentioned as far
- 0:58Speaker 1: as coach is coming and and going so uh For
- 1:03Speaker 1: for example, the Saints have have granted permission to offensive
- 1:08Speaker 1: line coach John Benton and I'm sorry, uh, uh excuse me.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Andrew Junoko and John Bent have already been hired by
- 1:15Speaker 1: the Seahawks, and now Rick Dennison has been granted permission
- 1:18Speaker 1: to interview with the Seattle Seahawks.
- 1:20Speaker 2: UH.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The New Orleans Saints UH are retaining wide receiver coach
- 1:26Speaker 1: Keith Williams. We've already seen several Saints assistants headed out
- 1:32Speaker 1: to Las Vegas to join the Raiders. Now Marcus Robertson,
- 1:37Speaker 1: who's UH now former Saints defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson
- 1:41Speaker 1: is joining the Raiders staff. So there's just been a
- 1:44Speaker 1: lot of of this turnover, which is to be expected.
- 1:49Speaker 1: We've also seen the Saints hire now an assistant a
- 1:55Speaker 1: Brendan Nugent, who UH is who had worked with Kellen
- 2:03Speaker 1: Moore with the Chargers. They're reuniting. So Nugent actually worked
- 2:07Speaker 1: with the Saints offensive line from two thousand and five
- 2:09Speaker 1: through twenty twenty one. He's returning to New Orleans. He
- 2:13Speaker 1: and Moore coach together with the Chargers in twenty twenty
- 2:15Speaker 1: three when when Moore was the offensive coordinator. So they're reuniting.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So there's always there's always this idea of some familiarity
- 2:26Speaker 1: we've talked about naturally, a guy like Doug Nusmeyer, who
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's largely assumed is going to join Kellen Moore in
- 2:35Speaker 1: New Orleans. He's been with Kellen Moore ever since twenty
- 2:38Speaker 1: eighteen in Dallas. They were together in Dallas from eighteen
- 2:41Speaker 1: to twenty two. They spent twenty three together with the Chargers,
- 2:44Speaker 1: then twenty four together in Philly. It's largely assumed that
- 2:48Speaker 1: nus Meyer is going to join Kellen Moore in New
- 2:51Speaker 1: Orleans in some capacity. If it's offensive coordinator, if it's
- 2:54Speaker 1: past game coordinator assistant, they'll figure out the roles and
- 2:57Speaker 1: the titles and all that stuff whenever. But you're still
- 3:00Speaker 1: looking for a defensive coordinator and a full staff that
- 3:04Speaker 1: you'll have to fill out. But Kellen Moore talked about
- 3:07Speaker 1: the importance of those relationships when building a staff.
- 3:11Speaker 2: There's tremendous value for experience when you've worked with someone
- 3:15Speaker 2: just for continuity's sake. But I think the blessing and
- 3:17Speaker 2: wonderful thing that you learn is as you go through
- 3:19Speaker 2: this journey, you know, going to Los Angeles, going to Philly,
- 3:22Speaker 2: there's a lot of coaches that if I just stuck
- 3:24Speaker 2: in Dallas I would have never met, would never got
- 3:26Speaker 2: to team up with. And so you understand that as
- 3:28Speaker 2: you go through this process, you're going to have an
- 3:30Speaker 2: opportunity to meet and team up with coaches that maybe
- 3:32Speaker 2: you haven't done it with, and they're gonna be really
- 3:34Speaker 2: special and they're gonna have a huge impact on us.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I think every coach coaching tends to be somewhat incestuous.
- 3:42Speaker 1: There's there's a lot of hiring and rehiring and firing
- 3:45Speaker 1: and sharing and crossover. It just that's just sort of
- 3:47Speaker 1: the nature of the business. And you're already seeing that
- 3:51Speaker 1: now manifest in the staff that Kellen Moore is starting
- 3:54Speaker 1: to sort of assemble and put together. I think all offensively,
- 4:02Speaker 1: what is very important as far as a coordinator or
- 4:05Speaker 1: a quarterbacks coach is that Kellen Moore has someone around
- 4:09Speaker 1: him that he trusts, that he works well with. That's
- 4:10Speaker 1: why I think Doug nus Meyer is important for that
- 4:12Speaker 1: role play play number thirty one. He was as point
- 4:16Speaker 1: blank Kellen Moore was, if he's gonna call plays play
- 4:18Speaker 1: this one real.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Quick and coach who that kind of tough in the ame,
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes a call plays.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So Kellen Moore is going. I mean, there's no ambiguity.
- 4:27Speaker 1: For as much as he dodged a lot of questions
- 4:29Speaker 1: today when he was asked if he's gonna call place yep,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I call plays. Okay, so he's gonna call plays. So
- 4:36Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator is more someone who is going to
- 4:39Speaker 1: be a resource, someone who you trust, uh, who could
- 4:43Speaker 1: be in your ear, can be game plan you can
- 4:45Speaker 1: bounce ideas off of. It's important as a resource to
- 4:49Speaker 1: Kellen Moore. The other side of it. That's why that's
- 4:53Speaker 1: why I think Doug nus Meyer's an offensive coordinator is
- 4:55Speaker 1: very important the other side of it. When you're talking
- 4:58Speaker 1: about defensive coordinator. This person is who run aside of
- 5:02Speaker 1: the football for you and you cannot miss on this.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Hire and Kellimore talked about the process of building a staff,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but then it was also as about a timeline for
- 5:15Speaker 1: that DC higher.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Certainly, we just want to do it the right way
- 5:18Speaker 2: and we want to go through a process and we
- 5:20Speaker 2: understand that when the opportunity presents itself, it'll be right.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And we're very excited about that. Obviously, we know, uh,
- 5:27Speaker 2: we're into the middle of February, but there's plenty of
- 5:29Speaker 2: excellent candidates out there. We're really excited. The ones that
- 5:31Speaker 2: we've talked to already and the ones we'll talk to
- 5:33Speaker 2: in the future. It'll be a great opportunity.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So you didn't give a timeline, but they're going to
- 5:37Speaker 1: go through the process. One of the names that has
- 5:39Speaker 1: come up is former LSU defensive coordinator Deronte Jones. ESPN's
- 5:44Speaker 1: Jeremy Fowler was the first to report that Deronte Jones
- 5:47Speaker 1: could be a candidate and that the New Orleans Saints
- 5:49Speaker 1: have requested permission to interview Deronte Jones for the vacant
- 5:54Speaker 1: defensive coordinator job. Dente is currently the secondary's coach and
- 6:00Speaker 1: the defensive pass game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. Very candidly,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I don't like this. It's not that I don't like
- 6:09Speaker 1: the idea of Deronte Jones on staff. I don't like
- 6:13Speaker 1: the pairing of a thirty six year old first time
- 6:16Speaker 1: head coach and a first time NFL defensive coordinator. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: don't like that general lack of experience. There are exceptions
- 6:26Speaker 1: to every rule. I think Dan Campbell just did in
- 6:30Speaker 1: Detroit is the most obvious example. You had a first
- 6:33Speaker 1: time head coach who had never been a coordinator, and
- 6:36Speaker 1: he hired two young coordinators who had never been coordinators.
- 6:41Speaker 1: He aired Ben Johnson on the offensive side of the
- 6:43Speaker 1: ball Aaron Glenn on the defensive side of the ball,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and they crushed it. That's also an exception, not the rule.
- 6:50Speaker 1: More often than not, what you see is a coach
- 6:55Speaker 1: that takes control of one side of the ball. Look
- 6:56Speaker 1: at the Saints. Dennis Allen called the defensive plays, but
- 7:02Speaker 1: Joe Woods was the defensive coordinator. Actually they shared roles.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Chris Reeschard was there that first year, but anyway, because
- 7:11Speaker 1: you really just needed someone who was an asset on
- 7:13Speaker 1: the staff in that role. That's what I would look
- 7:16Speaker 1: at offensively, but defensively, You've got to have someone that
- 7:20Speaker 1: can run that side of the ball. So when you
- 7:22Speaker 1: looked at Dennis Allen, he had to nail the oc higher.
- 7:25Speaker 1: They retained Pete Carmichael, Whift went got Clint Kubiak. Will
- 7:29Speaker 1: never know how it would have gone had they been healthy,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but it looked good early, right, But you had to
- 7:33Speaker 1: have someone who could maintain that side of the ball.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Look at Kellen Moore. When Kellen Moore got hired by
- 7:40Speaker 1: Dallas as the offensive coordinator in when he's promoted in
- 7:43Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. The head coach, although more called plays the
- 7:48Speaker 1: head coach, was an offensive minded coach who'd been a
- 7:52Speaker 1: head coach for two decades, who had won a Super Bowl,
- 7:55Speaker 1: who'd made eleven Playoff appearances. Right like, it was like
- 8:01Speaker 1: you had a really experienced guy there. So I look
- 8:06Speaker 1: and I go, all right, this is your first time
- 8:10Speaker 1: as a head coach. Whoever you put around you offensively
- 8:15Speaker 1: just to make you comfortable, good and not comfortable meaning
- 8:19Speaker 1: like yes, men, but that are going to make you
- 8:21Speaker 1: at ease in the job and allow you to work
- 8:23Speaker 1: freely and fluidly defensively. You got to nail it. And
- 8:27Speaker 1: I would rather have someone that has defensive coordinator experience
- 8:30Speaker 1: in the NFL. That's why someone like Brandon Staley I
- 8:34Speaker 1: think would be a better option than Deronte because you're
- 8:40Speaker 1: eliminating the variable of what it's going to look like.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, Derntey Jones could get the job and fall
- 8:46Speaker 1: flat on his face. I mean I think back to
- 8:50Speaker 1: Sean Payton's teams. When Sean Payton nailed the defensive coordinator hires,
- 8:55Speaker 1: good things happen. When you had Greg Williams, You'll won
- 8:58Speaker 1: a Super Bowl, and you have brought Dennis Allen back,
- 9:01Speaker 1: you got out of the seven and nine sludge and
- 9:04Speaker 1: became a contender again. When you had Steve Spagnola, you
- 9:08Speaker 1: were the worst defense in history. When you had Rob Ryan,
- 9:10Speaker 1: you were atrocious, and you were a seven to nine
- 9:13Speaker 1: football team. So I trust Kellen Moore as an offensive
- 9:18Speaker 1: minded guy is going to build a staff, is going
- 9:21Speaker 1: to function offensively in a way that works. But he's
- 9:27Speaker 1: got to have someone that he can say at defensive
- 9:30Speaker 1: where he could say, here, here's the defense, go make
- 9:33Speaker 1: us good. And I'd feel much more comfortable if that's
- 9:39Speaker 1: someone who's proven he's done it before, because you have
- 9:42Speaker 1: a first time head coach. If Mike McCarthy had gotten
- 9:45Speaker 1: this head coaching job, and you're talking about a veteran
- 9:48Speaker 1: head coach who's been at two different places and got
- 9:51Speaker 1: into the playoffs and won a Super Bowl and been
- 9:53Speaker 1: to another Super Bowl and like then, Okay, like I
- 10:00Speaker 1: he went to one Super Bowl as a head coach.
- 10:01Speaker 1: But I can understand him taking a chance at defensive coordinator.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It's not to say that he wouldn't with and it's
- 10:10Speaker 1: not important, but I can understand him taking a chance
- 10:13Speaker 1: because you have that much experience on staff. This is
- 10:15Speaker 1: one of those where I think you've got to go
- 10:17Speaker 1: really veteran on the defensive side of the ball. It's
- 10:20Speaker 1: gotta be someone like Brandon Staley, who's been a head coach,
- 10:23Speaker 1: been a defensive coordinator, who's going to bring that amount
- 10:25Speaker 1: of respect and credibility and experience into that meeting room.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So Kellamore didn't give a timeframe for filling out his staff,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but they got to move quickly because you're getting toward
- 10:39Speaker 1: the start of the league year next month, and you're
- 10:42Speaker 1: also moving later this month toward Combine and then Pro
- 10:45Speaker 1: Day's and you're going toward the draft. So it's coming
- 10:49Speaker 1: like the off season is in full swing and you
- 10:52Speaker 1: got to get toward building a roster. So you gotta
- 10:53Speaker 1: have your staff in place. But I really think as
- 10:57Speaker 1: interesting as it would be to see Derante come back
- 11:00Speaker 1: to Louisiana, it's a nothing against Deronte. I think he
- 11:03Speaker 1: did an okay job in the one season at LSU.
- 11:05Speaker 1: He was really hamstrung for half a season, and when
- 11:08Speaker 1: Ed got fired or you know, it was announced he
- 11:10Speaker 1: wouldn't come back, they took the handcuffs off. Toronte got
- 11:12Speaker 1: super aggressive, and they were pretty good in the last
- 11:14Speaker 1: month of the season. Not great, but they're pretty good
- 11:17Speaker 1: in the last month of the season. I just don't
- 11:21Speaker 1: know that this is the right timing or spot for
- 11:24Speaker 1: a first time defensive coordinator, but we'll see what decision
- 11:27Speaker 1: Kellen Moore makes.
