Madness, madness. John, Westy, and Matt begin the story of David Lean's sweeping war epic, the film that took the director from intimate British drama into the world of the grand-scale blockbuster.
In Part 1 we cover the film's opening, director David Lean, the cast, and the second act — including Alec Guinness's towering performance and the gruelling Ceylon shoot that nearly defeated everyone.
Part 2, covering the crew, the finale, reception, and the film's legacy, is available now.
