- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, and welcome to the Short Stuff. I'm Josh. Jerry's
- 0:06Speaker 1: here for Dave, and we're talking today about the Seven
- 0:08Speaker 1: Deadly Zins.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Seven Deadly Zens.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Did I say zens?
- 0:14Speaker 2: That's a wine brand?
- 0:16Speaker 1: It is? I was thinking it's pretty bold to label
- 0:19Speaker 1: your wine as deadly.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Uh yeah, good point. Never thought about that.
- 0:25Speaker 1: But I think what they're I think they're able to
- 0:28Speaker 1: because the Seven Deadly Sins are so widely known, Yeah,
- 0:32Speaker 1: that people don't normally stop and think it says deadly
- 0:36Speaker 1: on this wine label because they know that they're talking
- 0:39Speaker 1: about something else.
- 0:41Speaker 2: That's right.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's a pretty widespread thing if you've seen the movie
- 0:44Speaker 3: seven obviously very prominent in that it's just a big
- 0:47Speaker 3: thing in pop culture. It was even a sort of
- 0:50Speaker 3: interpretation of Gilligan's Island, which I had never really been
- 0:53Speaker 3: too acquainted with.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Oh you haven't. It's a fan theory.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that apparently Sherwood Schwartz is kind of in some ways,
- 1:01Speaker 3: but that the Professor is Pride, and of course we're
- 1:03Speaker 3: also going over the list of the Sins with this list.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Professor is Pride, the Skipper is Anger or Wrath, Ginger
- 1:10Speaker 3: obviously lust, mister Howell obviously agreed, missus Howell. Gluttony and
- 1:17Speaker 3: partially sloth is what this says, Marianna is ENVM. Then
- 1:20Speaker 3: of course Gilligan is sloth, and he's the one that
- 1:23Speaker 3: is keeping them trapped on the island through his sloth.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, there are some really great fan theories around Gilligan's Island,
- 1:29Speaker 1: not just that one.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that stuff. It's fun.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I do too. But yeah, that's the Seven Deadly Sins,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the Skipper and the rest that They haven't always been
- 1:41Speaker 1: called the Seven Deadly Sins, and as a matter of fact,
- 1:44Speaker 1: seven is a trimmed down version of the original eight.
- 1:48Speaker 1: They've been called everything from the capital vices, cardinal sins,
- 1:51Speaker 1: capital sins, Yeah, vice sins. I think if you want
- 1:56Speaker 1: to combine everything together, and the Roman Catholics are nut
- 2:00Speaker 1: for this kind of stuff. And over the centuries, as
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Church has evolved, the whole things has kind of
- 2:08Speaker 1: been whittled down or changed. There have been different names.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I think Pride used to be called Van Gloriousness or
- 2:15Speaker 1: van glory instead of sloth. They had melancholy like basically,
- 2:20Speaker 1: don't be sad. But regardless of how totally associated it
- 2:25Speaker 1: is with Catholicism, and Christianity in general. It actually doesn't
- 2:30Speaker 1: appear in the Bible.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right, by the way, I think Vanglory it's
- 2:36Speaker 3: probably already a band name, but that would be a pretty.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Good band name, metal for sure.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Oh yeah, absolutely, unless it's yeah, oh yeah, or I
- 2:44Speaker 3: was gonna say, probably like a Nickelback type of thing,
- 2:46Speaker 3: maybe whatever that is, whatever kind of music that is.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I don't even know what category that is.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I don't either, poor Nickelback, but I think they were
- 2:54Speaker 1: one of like the richest bands on the planet.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Anyway, Vanglory coming to a theater near you or a
- 3:01Speaker 3: concert venue near you.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Okay, but you could also call it theater. I'm getting sidetracked.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Speaking of theaters. Everyone should should go out and get
- 3:12Speaker 3: tickets for our live tour this year, right, Oh good.
- 3:14Speaker 1: One, chuck. Yeah, you can get tickets on stuff youshould
- 3:18Speaker 1: know dot com. All the links are up there. We're
- 3:20Speaker 1: going to Denver, We're going to Seattle, We're going to
- 3:24Speaker 1: San Francisco. In April, we're going to Chicago, Madison, Wisconsin, Akron, Ohio,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and then we're doing a whole tour of every single
- 3:33Speaker 1: city with a population over five thousand in Canada.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That's not true. We're sorry.
- 3:37Speaker 3: We couldn't go everywhere in Canada, but we did our best.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Some theaters on the East coast didn't work out, but
- 3:42Speaker 3: we tried everybody.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we're doing six six cities though, which
- 3:46Speaker 1: is yeah, it's pretty good.
- 3:47Speaker 2: To be fun.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, can't wait. Yeah, but go grab Tickets's gonna be fun.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Happy to be back out on the road and back
- 3:52Speaker 3: to the Seven Deadly Sins. I believe he said, if
- 3:54Speaker 3: you look in the Bible, you're not going to find them,
- 3:56Speaker 3: and that's because they're not really in the Bible, the
- 3:58Speaker 3: original sin when you know, Old Adam and Eve there
- 4:02Speaker 3: in the Garden of Eden in that book were described
- 4:04Speaker 3: as disobeying God and establishing the sinful nature of humanity.
- 4:08Speaker 3: But there's not a list of like the Ten Commandments
- 4:11Speaker 3: are in there, but the seven Deadly sins are not
- 4:13Speaker 3: in there. The Seven Deadly Sins came to be because
- 4:16Speaker 3: of a particular writer who was a monk in three
- 4:19Speaker 3: forty five CE name Evagrius Ponticus.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Which means Evan the Pontiac in English. Oh okay, according
- 4:31Speaker 1: to me, at least that's right.
- 4:33Speaker 3: But he was the guy that gets credit basically as
- 4:35Speaker 3: the first person to kind of write these things out
- 4:39Speaker 3: and get it out en mass.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but he had eight of them, the eight evil thoughts.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:44Speaker 1: He was a theologian, a monk who really put his
- 4:47Speaker 1: money where his mouth is. The last several years of
- 4:49Speaker 1: his life he went out and wandered around the desert
- 4:52Speaker 1: in Egypt and lived on herbs and barley. Essentially, he prayed,
- 4:57Speaker 1: he fasted, he meditated, He did his best to not
- 5:01Speaker 1: think any unholy thoughts. I'll bet that was more difficult
- 5:04Speaker 1: than you'd think. And he wrote a bunch of this
- 5:06Speaker 1: stuff down in the Anti Reticus, which is his celebrated
- 5:11Speaker 1: master work. And this is where the eight evil thoughts
- 5:14Speaker 1: first appear.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That's right, gluttony, lust, and of course we're not talking
- 5:20Speaker 3: just sexual lust here. It's kind of leslie desires for
- 5:24Speaker 3: worldly things. Greed, which was avarice at the time, Anger, sloth, sadness, vainglory,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and pride are all in there.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And although we now think of the seven deadly
- 5:36Speaker 1: sins is applying to everybody, that's not at all what
- 5:40Speaker 1: Evan was doing at first. He basically was creating this
- 5:45Speaker 1: list of what to avoid if you're a monk. Essentially,
- 5:49Speaker 1: that's who would applied to initially.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah, like, if you really want to walk the walk
- 5:53Speaker 3: like me, these are the things you need to avoid.
- 5:56Speaker 3: And I promise I'm not thinking of him. I'm just
- 5:58Speaker 3: writing about them.
- 6:01Speaker 1: You want to take a break, Yeah, okay, we're gonna
- 6:03Speaker 1: take a break.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Just like the number of stars the sky was so much.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Stop all right, chuck. So, Evagrius Pontikiss basically created these
- 6:34Speaker 1: seven Deadly Sins or eighth Deadly Sins as a roadmap
- 6:38Speaker 1: for monks. Uh. And then some other people came along
- 6:41Speaker 1: a couple of centuries later like this is great, Like
- 6:44Speaker 1: how can we upscale this and really get the most
- 6:48Speaker 1: out of it in our corporate world? And one of
- 6:51Speaker 1: the first people to do this was Saint Gregory the Great,
- 6:54Speaker 1: who later became No. I guess probably first was Pope
- 6:57Speaker 1: Gregory the First.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, and he became sainted later.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It has to be. I don't think anybody's ever been sainted. Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you can't be sainted while you're alive, because you have
- 7:08Speaker 1: to perform at there's two miracles after your death.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah that's right, boy, you really remember that stuff.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I knew, I do remember some of it.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, nice work.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 3: So Pope Gregory, the first before he was a pope,
- 7:25Speaker 3: wrote his master work and it was basically sort of
- 7:29Speaker 3: a real dissection of the Book of Job called Moraleia
- 7:33Speaker 3: and Job. And it was a very influential book. And
- 7:38Speaker 3: this is where his seven principal vices were laid out.
- 7:41Speaker 3: And we're not going to read all the sort of
- 7:43Speaker 3: gobbedy book, but it was you know, vanglory, envy, anger, melancholy, avarice, gluttony,
- 7:48Speaker 3: and lust and then sort of deeper definitions of what
- 7:51Speaker 3: all those meant back then.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and like all the terrible behaviors that come out
- 7:55Speaker 1: of it, right, so like like like reveling in your
- 7:59Speaker 1: neighbor misfortune kind of thing, like like these are what
- 8:03Speaker 1: you want to avoid, right. And a few centuries after that,
- 8:08Speaker 1: in the medieval era, other Christian writers that come like
- 8:11Speaker 1: Thomas Aquinas really latched onto this. They're like this is great,
- 8:16Speaker 1: Like why didn't we think of this stuff earlier? And
- 8:19Speaker 1: one of the things that kind of became popular to
- 8:22Speaker 1: get this across as a conception is called the Tree
- 8:25Speaker 1: of Vices. It's an icon with pride as the root
- 8:29Speaker 1: of this tree and then the rest of this deadly
- 8:32Speaker 1: sins kind of coming off as branches, and it became
- 8:36Speaker 1: very familiar because you would paint this on the wall
- 8:39Speaker 1: of your church somewhere. The reason you were painting it
- 8:42Speaker 1: on the wall of the church is because you had
- 8:46Speaker 1: to confess these particular kind of sins at least once
- 8:49Speaker 1: a year and then do whatever penance the local priest
- 8:52Speaker 1: told you to do for them, or if you didn't
- 8:55Speaker 1: do that, they're deadly because they were deadly for your
- 8:59Speaker 1: mortal soul, and after that you would after you die,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you would go to hell. That's why they're called deadly sins.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Not like they kill you here on earth, they kill
- 9:07Speaker 1: you spiritually after you die. So to confess those sins, though,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you had to know what they were, and that's why
- 9:14Speaker 1: they would paint the tree of vices on the church wall.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that, for some reason struck me as funny. It
- 9:21Speaker 3: was the fourth Ladder in Council in twelve fourteen, where
- 9:23Speaker 3: the you know, you got to confess two times a year.
- 9:26Speaker 3: That's where that came from. And I just love the
- 9:29Speaker 3: idea of people are like, well, all right, what are
- 9:31Speaker 3: the sins? And I'll let you know if I did
- 9:32Speaker 3: any of them.
- 9:33Speaker 1: That's right. That Yeah, you just go up and like
- 9:36Speaker 1: trace your finger and be like, oh, okay, yeah, I
- 9:38Speaker 1: guess I did that. I did revel in my neighbor's
- 9:41Speaker 1: mis fresh and that time you stepped into a bear trap.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Oh my god, I thought that was hilarious.
- 9:45Speaker 2: That's right.
- 9:46Speaker 3: The Germans would have a name for that one day.
- 9:49Speaker 3: So people were pretty obsessed, you know, during the Black
- 9:53Speaker 3: Death of what happened after you die? That's I mean,
- 9:55Speaker 3: people were already heaven, hell, what's in a brand new thing?
- 9:57Speaker 3: But that's when it was like people are dying all
- 9:59Speaker 3: over the place and like where are we going, Like
- 10:01Speaker 3: we're really kind of worried about this. So it became
- 10:04Speaker 3: very ubiquitous talking about sins, talking about life after death.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Sermons became obsessed with it. It was in the Canterbury
- 10:11Speaker 3: Tales in the form of the Parsons Tale, and so
- 10:13Speaker 3: it was just kind of really latched on the Seven
- 10:17Speaker 3: Deadly Sins in particular as kind of the hot thing
- 10:20Speaker 3: in Catholicism.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's still around in Catholicism. Apparently in two
- 10:25Speaker 1: thousand and eight, the Catholic Church, we're like, hey, we've
- 10:29Speaker 1: updated some more seven Deadly Sins for the aughts. I
- 10:35Speaker 1: guess that's probably how they put it. Genetic modification is one, Yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 1: carrying out experiments on humans, Okay, polluting the environment all
- 10:44Speaker 1: behind that, causing social injustice, sure, causing poverty, becoming obscenely wealthy. Yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and then of course taking drugs. Yeah, it didn't seem
- 10:56Speaker 1: like a deadly sin. Yeah, well you know they were
- 10:59Speaker 1: on a roll.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Those are the seven modern deadly sins? Is that how
- 11:01Speaker 2: they're framing it.
- 11:02Speaker 1: That's what they tell me at the vatkue fantastic. Well,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I guess that's about it. Go forth and look out
- 11:10Speaker 1: for the seven deadly sins. I guess, yeah, don't do those. Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: short stuff? Is that stuff you should know? Is a
