Nero and the Gallic Rebellion of Vindex
In 68 AD, Gaius Julius Vindex, the Roman governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, raised a rebellion that would ultimately topple Nero. This episode explores Vindex's Gallic heritage, his call for a new emperor, the battle of Vesontio against loyalist forces under Verginius Rufus, and how this provincial revolt spiraled into the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. We examine Vindex's motivations, the military dynamics, and Nero's panicked response as the empire began to crumble.
