- 0:16Hello, and welcome to episode number twenty three, our MJ episode. Here
- 0:21at cards and categories. I am Mike Coolard from ras Ball, joined us
- 0:25always by my very good friend Jeremie Brewer from also from Asball. Jeremy,
- 0:29how are you doing on this fine evening? Doing very well? This is
- 0:32I think our holiday episode. We're coming up to the holiday episode, if
- 0:36we can call it that, also the MJ episode, especially for you Chicago
- 0:40native. I don't know what it is for central Illinois. He's still the
- 0:44MJA episode, but excited to be here. So I feel like it's been
- 0:49a slow week of baseball news relative to what we had last week and week
- 0:54and a half. Still plenty going on, so it's it's slow, and
- 0:58I think the market's kind of waiting for a certain Yamamoto to make a decision
- 1:02to release the rest of the market. But still some exciting stuff going on.
- 1:04Dodgers and Braves still feel like they're having fun. Everybody else is just
- 1:10just watching. So yeah, absolutely, and it's been I think a good
- 1:15week of just mid level transactions as teams kind of fill in little spots on
- 1:19rosters and really round out guys that I think are still going to be fantasy
- 1:25relevant, maybe more so in some deeper like fifteen teen leagues, and maybe
- 1:29even some in all only guys we're going to discuss here today, But those
- 1:33are my favorite because that actually it's fun to analyze those guys as opposed to
- 1:38some of these first rounders we've been discussing the past few weeks, between Juan
- 1:42Soto and Shohei Otani and the likes of those guys that sometimes it's hard to
- 1:47find something new and refreshing to say about those guys. Yeah, top five
- 1:53or top four, tough call. I don't know what we're gonna do here.
- 1:56We're we talked today. I think we got some guys to say should
- 1:59you own them? Na? While? So why there's a number of guys
- 2:01today that I think. So we're gonna start. What's the first transaction you
- 2:06will pick up? Yeah, I think we'll just start with the biggest one
- 2:08right off the top. So that's the move of Tyler glassnow from the Rays
- 2:13to the Dodgers in a four player deal that also included Manny Margo going from
- 2:19the race of the Dodgers and the Rays picking up Ryan Pepio and Johnny de
- 2:23Luca in the return back from the Dodgers. So this will slot Tyler glasnow
- 2:30into probably the number one spot in the Dodgers' rotation. I think, as
- 2:35long as he's healthy, that's always been like his big thing. And the
- 2:38Dodgers also extended him with this deal with a four year, one hundred and
- 2:44ten million dollar extension. He was moved by the Rays obviously because he's getting
- 2:49a little too expensive in the classic Tampa Bay Way. So Glass noow was
- 2:53on the block, and I think this was a really fantastic landing spot for
- 2:59him as he to another smart organization that should be able to limit his innings,
- 3:04find the best usage pattern for him, I think, and really maximize
- 3:08him. I guess the question always is with Tyler Glass, now, what
- 3:12does maximum look like? How many innings do you think we could be getting
- 3:15out of glassnow next year? And what do you think of his trajectory now
- 3:22they's landed in Tintltown. Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. The question
- 3:29is how much you're gonna get, not what are you going to get?
- 3:30I don't think there's any question about the skill level with Glass now. If
- 3:35he was a two hundred inning picture, we'd be talking about him and Spencer
- 3:38Strider Garrett Cole at the top like that's I don't think there's any question about
- 3:44that. But you're hoping for one hundred with Tyler Glass. Now you're hoping
- 3:47for a half a season at best, and for that you're getting a top
- 3:55of the rotation starter when you have that, So if you're baking that,
- 4:00then you should be happy. If he thinks it more than you know,
- 4:02twenty starts is probably fantastic for Tyler Glass. Now you're right, I think
- 4:06this the landing spot is fantastic. Gives him a great opportunity for wins in
- 4:12those ones he does does get a chance to start. The one thing you
- 4:15have to remember, you said the health. He has started more than fourteen
- 4:19games in his career one time, so it's and that was this was just
- 4:28this last year. So love Tyler Glass now tons of skill. Definitely got
- 4:32the risk for a number one starter. So that's gonna scare off a number
- 4:36of people, myself likely included just for the what you have to pay to
- 4:41get him at the draft table. Yeah, and I think with those one
- 4:45hundred and twenty evenings they put in last year, over those twenty one starts,
- 4:48they were really high quality. Obviously, he came with a twelve point
- 4:51one K nine, three point fifty three ER and ten wins in those twenty
- 4:58one starts, so you couldn't have asked for more. The thing was is
- 5:01that he started on your il for the season with an oblique issue. So
- 5:05it's kind of a classic Tyler glassnow season as you're not sure what muscle or
- 5:11joint is going to give on out on you that I think, I mean,
- 5:15he's going to be a little bit in like the De Gram territory for
- 5:17me going into this year's drafts that I did take a shot on de Gram
- 5:23in leagues early, but Glass noow has never really cost that and I think
- 5:28he's good if you know how to build pitching staffs and you're in a league
- 5:30that allows you to do that, because you're not going to find better rate
- 5:34stats than that K nine and the era is maybe a little bit high,
- 5:39But you're also looking at a whip just over one. It was a one
- 5:43o eight whip. No one can touch Glass now he's rained in his control.
- 5:46But what's that costing you at the draft table this year? Brew,
- 5:48Yeah, I think that's that's the big question. And last Night right now
- 5:53is just looking at drafts here in uh in just December. He is the
- 5:58thirteenth pitcher off the board, number ten starting pitcher UH with behind a few
- 6:02relievers there. And that's a pretty steep price to pay for Glasnow, so's
- 6:09we got to do our usual game to see who you would take. But
- 6:14before I go there, top ten pitcher, Tyler Glasnow, how do you
- 6:17feel about that? Is the has to be drafted at as the ace of
- 6:21your staff, no one you might not get more than twenty starts out of
- 6:26them. Well, I mean, I did just compare to Jacob to Gram
- 6:30and I think I'm okay with that risk level. If it's it's got to
- 6:34be the right league, and I got to know my league mates a little
- 6:39bit, because if it is a really really sharp league that's not going to
- 6:42let you build out the middle part of your staff, you're you know,
- 6:46you're two and three starters, then I probably don't play that high risk.
- 6:50But if it is a league where you know that you can find volume and
- 6:58quality at the two and three starter spots, and especially if you're in like
- 7:01an auction auction situation and you can fill it out with whatever players do you
- 7:06want with your dollars. That's when I am looking at Glass now, because
- 7:11hey, yeah, it might be twenty starts, but you might find the
- 7:14one season that he does push it to one hundred and fifty innings, and
- 7:17that's gonna really swing leagues if he's coming at that tenth overall pick price,
- 7:23because you're gonna be getting somebody who's probably gonna end up in the top three
- 7:27or four pitchers you know between right behind, like Stryder and Cole. So
- 7:33it is gonna be dependent, it is. And so I mean you're talking
- 7:38a fourth round pick. So let me throw some names that you hear that
- 7:42are going higher than Glass. Now, I'll see see where you land there.
- 7:46So we got George Kirby. Would you rather have Kirby or Glass?
- 7:50Noow, so I would rather have Kirby. Is that Gallen Gallin? Yes?
- 7:57All right, we're going the other way because I think that that's the
- 7:59more the interesting discussion. So going behind Glass nowt here Pablo Lopez, So
- 8:05okay, but there it's probably a coin foot that is probably actually where I
- 8:07do go Glass now, so I might be right on the line with the
- 8:11ADP. Yeah, you got Aaron Nolan's trieg Schoogle a little bit behind him
- 8:16as well as well. I think so the Freddy Peralta's Blake Snells, Max
- 8:20Freed x Freedom nex Friede type location. So yeah, I think it really
- 8:26comes down to your risk of appetite for injury is really what it comes down
- 8:31to. Uh, if you're willing to take that gamble and you think you
- 8:33can build the staff, you're absolutely right. He's he's worth it. And
- 8:35the move to La especially in a five by five league, certainly has to
- 8:41help because you know, from Winds perspective, you're gonna be havy. Not
- 8:46that it wasn't good great in Tampa, but with the juggernaut that the Dodgers
- 8:50seem to be building, Uh, there there's something to be said for the
- 8:54Winds will get. So let's talk about the the other side of the trade
- 8:56here. What do you think about the Rays return? I like Pepio that
- 9:01I think Pepio He's going to slot really well into the Rays system. That
- 9:07I think there's a lot of similarities between the Dodgers and the Rays. So
- 9:09that's part of it. And I was really starting to get into Pepyo last
- 9:13year on the Dodgers that the k raid is a little bit lower, but
- 9:16he's got really fantastic control and an era that began with a two a two
- 9:22to one four era last year over forty two innings in eight starts for the
- 9:26Dodgers, No three starts eight games, so he was in a bit of
- 9:31a swing band role and he's already twenty five. But I think any other
- 9:37place he'd be like a number three ish starter on a staff, and that's
- 9:41probably about where he's going to be running into like the same sort of buzzsaw
- 9:46with the Rays, because I think he's in the battle for like the fourth
- 9:50and fifth starter spot with Shane Boz and TODJ. Bradley there, so it's
- 10:00gonna be a really nice landing spot. Don't love the division that he's pitching
- 10:03in, but if there's any team that's gonna find any extra level out of
- 10:07Ryan Pepio, it's gonna be the Rais. And I love taking shots on
- 10:13raised players like this. Again, though, I think the draft ADP is
- 10:16starting to get a little rich on Pepio already, because I think he was
- 10:20starting to turn into a bit of like one of these wide awake sleepers where
- 10:26lots of people saw his great work with the Dodgers last year. Part of
- 10:30it is it came with a ninety nine point two left on base percentage that
- 10:35I've never seen anything like that when I've looked at stats. That is outrageous,
- 10:41and that means anybody that's getting on base was getting retired. So that
- 10:46two one four era came with a FIP that hovered around the fours. It
- 10:52was four to eight. So he's going to be a little less steady next
- 10:56year, and just finding a new environment might take a little adjusting to.
- 11:01So I guess what is the adp on Pepio? What are we looking at
- 11:05in terms of guys going around him? Yeah, so Pepio's going about two
- 11:09oh four off the draft board, eighty third pitcher off the board. So
- 11:15you're talking about guys like Brandon Fatt, Lucas Giolito, Aaron Savali, Nathan
- 11:24Yvaldi, Edward Rodriguez, Nick Pavetta, rext and Garrett Hunter Brown. So
- 11:31it's it's kind of right in that kind of a risky range. It feels
- 11:37about right to me where he's sitting. I think the problem you have with
- 11:41Pepio is you're not quite sure what starts to look at and what to kind
- 11:46of project. In the majors, he seemed to have fantastic control low k
- 11:50rates, and the miners his control was a little bit all over the place.
- 11:52He had high k rates And to your point, his his Babeiop was
- 11:58incredibly low, his left on based incredibly high. So all those luck metrics
- 12:01were greatly favoring them. So I think there's just a really large range of
- 12:07outcomes. But to your point, going to Tampa seems to be a wonder
- 12:13for a number of pictures, just like it used to be going to Houston
- 12:16would do wonders for pictures. So, you know, I started to get
- 12:20in that range, and I personally I love Hunter Brown, I love Valdi,
- 12:24and I'm probably taking guys Shane Baz and that I'm probably taking them.
- 12:28But once you start talking about the you know, Brian Bellows Leacas, do
- 12:35you Lado's, Aaron Savali's Pepio's definitely pretty attractive for me at that point in
- 12:41the draft. There's you know, a lot worse you can do with those
- 12:43guys. Yeah, And I think one of the guys that you mentioned that
- 12:48he reminds me a lot of is Aaron Savali that I think they're probably in
- 12:52like a similar spot for me. So yeah, I when you mentioned that
- 12:56group of pictures, Pepio is kind of in the mix. There were some
- 13:00that liked better, some that I didn't like as much. So there might
- 13:03be a couple of spots where I end up popping Pepio that he's going to
- 13:07be a solid rotation guy. That again, it's a little bit of like
- 13:13how he built the rest of the staff. If I'm looking for somebody who's
- 13:16going to give me more innings in that sort of area, Savali was probably
- 13:20like the way to go, or even an ed Rod an e Rod.
- 13:24If you do have a chance to take a little bit more of a dart
- 13:28throw, then that's where you can take one on Pepio or Brex and Garrett's
- 13:33in there. See if Brex and Grett Garrett can you know, repeat what
- 13:37he did last year. So I think it's a fair price, and I
- 13:41think it's going to be a nice guy who's going to have a little more
- 13:45ceiling there too, because he's still even though he is going to be in
- 13:48his age twenty six season, he doesn't have a lot of mileage on that
- 13:52arm. He's never pitched more than I guess I have to do some manual
- 13:58math adding this up. It looks like maybe one hundred and twenty five innings
- 14:01in a season, as he has battled some injuries. But it's also just
- 14:05the way the game works nowadays. Yeah, absolutely, so interesting trade.
- 14:11I'm you know, I guess we should be surprised. It seems like the
- 14:15Dodgers went right out figured out how to use that with Tammy savings. I
- 14:18don't know if you can we call that savings some hundred million dollar contract.
- 14:22The savings that's shopping at the Dollar Tree for pictures. So very interesting trade
- 14:31to get us underway. Yeah, what about go next? I was actually
- 14:35going to go to the two outfielders that were involved, because I think they're
- 14:37intriguing. You have Manny Marco moving to the Dodgers, who should slot very
- 14:43naturally into a weak side platoon with Jason Hayward there, and I think that's
- 14:50a great move for the Dodgers as like a baseball overall baseball move. It's
- 14:54gonna be a spot where they juice like three to four war out of it
- 14:58out of nowhere and create just a just an all star player like between the
- 15:03two matchups that they're going to play there. And then you have Johnny Dluca
- 15:09going to Tampa who is currently slotted probably for an out fourth outfielder job.
- 15:13But you know the Rays and the way they love to mix the match and
- 15:18I think this is another guy who is going to find his way into lineups
- 15:22at some point for the Rays that you know how the Rays work, there's
- 15:26going to be guys who enter the lineup for stretches and get hot, you
- 15:31know, you think about Luke Rayley last year is a lot of like this.
- 15:35Luca is obviously right handed, but it's just the way that the Rays
- 15:41work. So I'm actually kind of interested in Margo in leagues like you know
- 15:48only or if you have daily moves leagues where you can play that platoon matchup.
- 15:52It would be a really cheap option in a daily league to have a
- 15:56Margo and Hayward platoon in one of your out field spots. And then de
- 16:02Luca, I think is a perfect Ale only candidate in terms of he's got
- 16:06a lot of good metrics and just couldn't find a place to play for the
- 16:11Dodgers because they're loaded. But the Rays have the chance to really let them
- 16:15loose down there in Tampa. What do you think about either of them?
- 16:18Yeah, I mean, I don't think from the Lamargo perspective, I don't
- 16:21think he has strong enough splits for me to really invest. I mean,
- 16:25he he is going to be a little bit stronger against the lefties, but
- 16:37for his power generally goes against the righties. So it's it's kind of one
- 16:41of those the type of hitter changes. He becomes kind of more slap hit
- 16:44against the lefties, higher average, do a little bit more on base damage,
- 16:49whereas this power seems to be against so riety. So he I think
- 16:53he is a challenge there, but the lineup is definitely going to play up
- 16:57for him, and you got to think that he's gonna get a chance to
- 17:00use a little bit of a speed there as well. But for the most
- 17:04part, even probably from a platoon platoon perspective, Margo is probably not the
- 17:08guy. And it's been a lot on that said. De Luca is he's
- 17:14just such that intriguing player that you know, he never really got like a
- 17:18full season, and he were in the minors, he was always moving around,
- 17:22moving different levels. He didn't really you know, the twenty four games
- 17:26the majors he had, he didn't really show a whole lot, you know,
- 17:30he he was just aver just okay. But what I really like for
- 17:37speed, he doesn't strike out a lot, you know, he walks just
- 17:40enough. Like it seems like a relatively safe file. The kind of guys,
- 17:47they are very volatile with these type of guys, Like it feels like
- 17:49sometimes like I just want this guy to play. I just want to get
- 17:51in a light up. It's like, well, five days day rest,
- 17:53three days day rest, two days, three days off. Like sometimes Tampa
- 17:57likes to tinker so much. So in the daily League, I like to
- 18:00do Luca a little bit more until he gets established. If he comes out
- 18:04hot, then yeah, I think he's got a spot in that team for
- 18:07uh for for a while. So of the two, the Lucas probably the
- 18:11one that I would be taking some dart throws in very very late in the
- 18:15draft, and I haven't looked to see where he's going, but my hunch
- 18:22is he's pretty much free. Yeah, I And it's going to be a
- 18:26little bit of you've got to wait for the trade to work its way through
- 18:30the ADP that some of those drafts that started recently probably haven't even gone deep
- 18:36enough to start considering de Lucas, so it'll be interesting to see where he
- 18:38starts settling in the spring. But part of it too is that, like
- 18:45I said, he's not currently slated for a job, and he's going to
- 18:48be I think more so a guy that pops up and in the mid season
- 18:52on the waiver wires and if he gets an opportunity, Yeah, yeah,
- 18:56you're definitely, like if you're in spring training, you're seeing that, like
- 18:59waiting for pick of the last of the draft. You think he might have
- 19:02a chance, You grab him, you drop him, like he is one
- 19:04of those it's just when he gets an opportunity, he's worth picking up.
- 19:07Without waiting to see what he does, I think is the way to look
- 19:11at Luca. So yeah, but I did look at the ADP for d
- 19:14Luca seven to ten. Uh. Okay, he's free at this point,
- 19:21you can say that again. All right, Let's move on to the team
- 19:26that's been the hottest over the last week or so and honestly probably one of
- 19:30the more intriguing teams of the offseasons far. That is, the Kansas City
- 19:33Royals are out there signing players and I laud them for it. I think
- 19:40it's a division that is theirs for the taking, and honestly, it's something
- 19:44that the Socks could do that just won't, and it's the Twins are catchable.
- 19:49The Twins are not some unstoppable force and they seem to be clawing back
- 19:55payroll that I'm pumped that the Royals see that they they have sal Prez for
- 20:00a couple more years. They've got a young superstar and Bobby Witt, and
- 20:04they want to try to make a little bit of a run for it.
- 20:07So they went out and signed Michael Waka, who's coming off of a brilliant
- 20:11twenty twenty three season with the Padres. He made twenty four starts, pitched
- 20:15one hundred and thirty four innings, but went fourteen and four on the season
- 20:18with a three twenty two ear, array in eight three K nine and a
- 20:25whip of one one six. I'm sure there are plenty of leagues that Michael
- 20:27Waka won for guys, because he was free, free, free at the
- 20:32draft table last year. As you know, fourteen wins materialized out of nothing
- 20:37and he was hoovered off of waiver weires very early in the season. When
- 20:41that when that win streak happened second straight season that he's really outperformed as Whip.
- 20:48So I think there is something to Waka in this performance now that he's
- 20:53put up back to back seasons with Boston and San Diego. Here putting up
- 20:59two hundred and sixty one innings of a three twenty seven ERA with a four
- 21:03point h one FIP and it came with an eighty percent left on base percentage.
- 21:07But it is because he has just been stingy when dudes are on base
- 21:12and he goes into this kind of shut down closer mentality and grinds his way
- 21:18through these at bats. That he's got a great veteran presence. He's turned
- 21:22into a really solid pitcher, as you can tell. I think I'm excited
- 21:27with this landing spot here in Kansas City. They signed him to a two
- 21:30year deal in which the second year is a player option, so he has
- 21:37the chance to really pitch himself into another great position. So Brew, would
- 21:42you think about Michael Waka landing in Kansas City and what is cost is at
- 21:47the draft table right now? Yeah? I think you know, Waka is
- 21:52one of those guys that if you if you if you expect what he is,
- 21:56you're going to be pretty happy the Kansas City landing spot. I think
- 22:00we had this conversation just last week that Kansas City Park factors is not as
- 22:04pleasant as as you may think. It is a little bit more hitter spark
- 22:08over the last few years. But at the same point, I think he's
- 22:12gonna even like San Diego, you were always certain if he had kind of
- 22:18a role. He seemed like they was kind of bouncing around a little bit.
- 22:21He was always that kind of four fifth guys you're gonna get, you
- 22:23know, guys healthy, what are you going to rely on? So I
- 22:26like Waka to a degree of for what he is. He's definitely because of
- 22:30the rate and stats, he's not the guy that you want to rely on
- 22:33for the strikeouts. He's going to be more of a seven or eight caperny
- 22:37guy. He's gonna be good from a control perspective, which should translate wealth
- 22:42into to a reasonable whip. He's not going to be in the one ones
- 22:47or one os. He's gonna probably be more of a one two type of
- 22:51guy. And he has been, i'd say to a degree lucky the last
- 22:53few years. So I expect a level of regression, but it seems like
- 22:59that is general baked into his uh ADP. So Michael wa ADP is two
- 23:06seventy two. He's gonna the one hundred and sixth picture off the board at
- 23:10this point. So that's very reasonable. If you're talking auctions, you're talking
- 23:14a dollar guy at the end, and I think that's about right for Michael
- 23:18Walka as a guy that you can put at the back of the rotation.
- 23:22You're not you know you're gonna get some good innings. You know that he's
- 23:25not gonna blow up on you, and that's generally what you're looking for from
- 23:29a depth picture and play some good matchups and you should be happy. So
- 23:33uh, like I said, two seventy two, ADP, I'm going to
- 23:37read you. So first of all, where do you do you think that
- 23:38feels right? One hundred and six picture off the board. Well, that
- 23:45mixes in some relievers, I guess too, but it does yep, I
- 23:48think maybe a tick low. Like I think if I had to like rank
- 23:53my pictures, he'd probably be like just inside the top sixty ish, you
- 23:59know, just because because of what he's done the past couple of years.
- 24:00That part of it, too is like, I really like him as a
- 24:04guy. Where if you're in leagues where guys are just or your league mates
- 24:11are just punching in numbers into the auction calculator using the straight steamer projections,
- 24:18he's going to look really bad because he's projected for in the array in the
- 24:22mid forest based on the performance metrics. But I don't have any reason to
- 24:27see why he can't be relatively in the range of where he's been the past
- 24:32couple of years because San Diego was a predecent pictures park, but Boston is
- 24:37brutal. Boston's the second best offensive park in the league. So he survived
- 24:42that, and it shows me that there is some sort of magic he's found.
- 24:47It is obviously a factor of staying healthy for him. But because of
- 24:52those factors, like, I think I'll be a little bit higher on him
- 24:56than most people. Yeah, and I think you probably gonna be litle higher
- 24:59than I am. And so I'm gonna I'm gonna put you this test again
- 25:02here, so we're gonna go up the rankings. Uh, Michael Waka or
- 25:04Taj Bradley. I will take Bradley in that situation. Yeah, Michael Waka
- 25:11or Sheahan Waka to my ada. That's a tough one. I do like
- 25:19my aida a lot. I will go with my ata still. Yep,
- 25:25all right, I'm gonna really put you to the test here. You see
- 25:27Kakuciucci, Yeah, I know you Lovenuci Yeah. And then there must just
- 25:33be like a tier of pictures above that I just there is. There's let
- 25:40me read you some names here. So in that range you have Bradley Shehan,
- 25:44Mayata, Ries Olsen, you have read Detmer's, Charlie Morton, Andrew
- 25:48Abbott, Nicko Lodolo, Tristan McKenzie, you Darvish. Then you get to
- 25:53the bell and you start to getting the Pepio type perspective. So there is
- 25:56this like group of pictures. And if you look at that from Mackenzie all
- 26:02the way to Waka, there's roughly i'm gonna say, thirteen pitchers in a
- 26:08thirty pick spot, Like there's this really really tight group. But once you
- 26:14get past Waka, John Means, Seth Lugo, Kyle Harrison, Marcus Stroman
- 26:21Cutter, Crawford, Start, Lance Lane starts to drop off. So he
- 26:26like it feels like he's right at the end of a tier. From an
- 26:30adp perspective right now, or maybe the beginning of the last tier, if
- 26:36you may. Yeah, it sounds mostly like that's the cluster where people are
- 26:38getting fourth and fifth starters and rounding out rotations. So there's risk. You're
- 26:45trying to decide you're gonna take a little risk, little upside, or you
- 26:47can get something safe and Walka's on the safe side. Yeah, I think
- 26:51so, even though the innings you maybe unite might not be able to pencil
- 26:53in a lot. But what I like about Waka is he's pitching or he's
- 26:57hurt, So like if he's hurt, you put on the il and you
- 27:00pick up whatever flavor of the week is out there and just kind of cycle
- 27:04from there. So it's great to build upon, all right. The other
- 27:08transaction the Royals made was signing Hunter Renfro And actually I forgot to mention because
- 27:15we brought this up a couple of weeks ago that you were dismayed about the
- 27:18price of like third and fourth starters on the market. Walker signed for two
- 27:22years thirty two million, that like, honestly, Lancelynn and Kyle Gibson might
- 27:29end up being bargains for the Cardinals when it's all said and done. I
- 27:33started to think, So, like I had this, you know, feeling
- 27:36a little bit when those signs happening. They got Colling pretty good backlash form,
- 27:40but like, it's hard to sign guys to one year deals anymore because
- 27:45and give you that flexibility in the future. Because the Cardinals spent a little
- 27:48over twenty million on two guys that are going to get them a lot of
- 27:52innings, and there's upside with both of them two a degree, not like
- 27:56crazy upside, but there's upside of them. But that seems about the going
- 28:02rate or a little above what that is. So I think that that kind
- 28:07of mid level starting pitching tier has got a lot more expensive this year.
- 28:14Yeah, I totally agree. And it's just like an innings thing too.
- 28:18Nobody can round out innings anymore, so it's a lot of that. Okay.
- 28:22The other signing I was getting into for the Royals was Hunter Renfro signing
- 28:26there for a one year deal, and he should be in the battle for
- 28:30a corner infield spot there. He's coming off of a rough season playing for
- 28:33the Angels and Reds in which he hit two thirty three two ninety seven,
- 28:37four sixteen two ninety seven and two thirty three really killed you in five by
- 28:42five leagues with average and opp That came with twenty homers in sixty runs,
- 28:48sixty rbi on the nose over one hundred and forty games. So it was
- 28:52a pretty tough season for Hunter Renfro after coming off of two pretty solid seasons
- 28:56for the price that you were paying for him. Over the past three years,
- 29:00he's slashed two forty nine three h nine, four seventy and he's averaged
- 29:06just over twenty five homers a year with around seventy seventy runs and seventy five
- 29:12rbi. So do you think he can get back to that level brew of
- 29:17being like a two fifty hitter with twenty five homers in Kansas City Or is
- 29:22this is a guy that you need to see more out of before you jump
- 29:27back on the Hunter Renfro ship. Yeah, I think it's it's it's a
- 29:33guy I need to see a little bit more out of. And it's not
- 29:36necessarily against hunch of Renfros, against the profile. It's finding guys that can
- 29:41hit two forty and hit twenty home runs. Is not that hard. Like
- 29:48he doesn't he doesn't run, he doesn't do anything else. For you.
- 29:51So the runs are kind of low. You know, that Kansas City lineup
- 29:55isn't gonna be the greatest for run score, even though that is roughly hit
- 29:57at the ballpark. And so I think think he's one of those guys that,
- 30:00yeah, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get back to the twenty
- 30:03twenty one twenty twenty two Hunter Renfro. But that's just a two to sixty
- 30:08hitter with thirty home runs. Like it's uh, there's a lot of guys
- 30:14that seemed to be able to do that these days. And when you're at
- 30:17the end of the draft just trying to find a guy that's the kind of
- 30:19guy you're back into, you're not cominding the guy that hits for a high
- 30:22average and steals bases. At the end of the draft, you're not cominding
- 30:26the guy that's gonna score a lot of runs to the top of the lineup.
- 30:29So I don't know where he lands. I didn't look at to see,
- 30:32you know, Ruster resource where he's projected that Kansas City lineup, but
- 30:34five, six, seven somewhere in there, and you know he's he's gonna
- 30:40score sixty five runs. So he's a negative in your runs, negative in
- 30:45your batting average, negative in your steals, and average at your homers and
- 30:48RBI's. It's it's gonna be a tough sell for Renfro, which is unfortunate
- 30:53because I feel like for a few years he was kind of hidding Gym because
- 30:56he was able to like his I feel the league caught up to his production
- 31:02and he's definitely dropped off. So I like it as a by low for
- 31:04the Royals. I think it's something that you from a fancy perspective, you
- 31:08definitely keep an eye out. Well, I wouldn't be investing much of a
- 31:12draft pick in Hunter Renfro. Yep, I think you nailed it, like
- 31:17perfectly. That's exactly all my thoughts on Hunter Renfro that. I mean,
- 31:21if he does come out of the gate and he starts pacing for like thirty
- 31:23plus homers and the power is back a little bit, then yeah, I'll
- 31:27buy in. But he's best I think left for the waiver wire and then
- 31:33you can come back to him after the draft, And I mean that's where
- 31:36his ADP is right now. He's outside the top he's outside the top one
- 31:38hundred outfielders, so he's just really not in that in the conversations at this
- 31:45point, you're you're talking guys that are battling for, you know, the
- 31:49the last outfield spot on the team, or you're looking like Dylan Cruz or
- 31:55somebody like that. It's like, hopefully they can make make a team.
- 31:59So personally, I love Mitch Haniger in that position, but that's a whole
- 32:02different discussion for a different day. Yeah, And there was another corner outfielder
- 32:09that went off the board this week, and that was Lordus Gouriel Junior re
- 32:14signing with the Diamondbacks. He's returning to Arizona coming off a season in which
- 32:19he set a career high with twenty four homers batted to sixty one with sixty
- 32:23five runs, eighty two ribs, and five stolen bases. He's resigned there
- 32:30for a three year, forty two million dollar deals, so right in the
- 32:34range of Hunter Renfro, just more years because he's a little bit younger,
- 32:37and I think this is probably one of the better spots that Guriel could go
- 32:42back to. He's comfortable with Arizona and he's a guy that I do like
- 32:46is an option for, you know, one of the last outfielders a dollar
- 32:51pick at the end because that line that I read off was a pretty solid
- 32:54line. And sure the stolen bases were a little bit light, but outfields
- 33:00become a pretty shallow position. And so getting somebody like this at the end
- 33:04of the drafts who you know, he put up one hundred and forty five
- 33:07games for you, five hundred and eighty two played appearances. You can hope
- 33:12that the batting average bounces back because that two sixty one was a career low
- 33:15for him. He's a career two seventy nine batting average guy. Obviously a
- 33:21lot of that work came in Toronto, but you would think that he should
- 33:24be able to find something in the two seventies going forward. So Brew you
- 33:30can tell that I'm I'm pretty high on Guriel that like, I like him
- 33:34as just kind of a solid mid twenties bat with a decent average, just
- 33:38to round out your outfield. But what do you think, Yeah, I
- 33:43think you're you're You're pretty much right on there. Gurilla had a really interesting
- 33:46year last year. If you look at his splits from the first half of
- 33:51the second half, they were almost identical, maybe a little bit better in
- 33:55the first half, but he definitely had some more games, but he had
- 33:59a June and July he hit ob would say roughly like one to seventy for
- 34:04two months. And the fact that he kept kept the role and then actually
- 34:07turned it into a contract. On the other side is is to be something.
- 34:12But if you exclude those those months and I'm back in the napkating this,
- 34:16he's he was roughly like a two eighty five, two ninety hitter with
- 34:21mid teens to upper teens power, with you know, high single digit steals.
- 34:27Like to your point, like the kind of the last outfielder. Uh,
- 34:31that's a actually very good line if he can maintain that the whole season.
- 34:37So I think you know, Guriel, He's always has had a lot
- 34:39of talent. It's just the inconsistency that you can have with him is really,
- 34:44I think been the drawback that you have with Guriel. So I I
- 34:49do like him as that kind of last outfielder trying to fill that spot.
- 34:52And I think that he's to your point, he's gotten more comfortable in Arizona
- 34:59than than he he was previously playing out in Toronto. So I like I
- 35:06like gury Yell, I'm not he's not would call him a sleeper by any
- 35:08means, I feel like he's probably well valued. So from a a perspective
- 35:15of ADP, you know, Guryel's going, yeah, number two, thirty
- 35:21six off the board overall, and that's gonna be roughly top fifty outfielder,
- 35:30so right in that number four or five range as an outfielder. So that
- 35:36feels about right. You're you're arguing about Guryell versus Whip Merrifield, Starling Marte,
- 35:44Jared Kellenick, Taylor Ward, like all guys that have a little bit
- 35:49something that you are hoping for more so it feels about right for me.
- 35:52Yeah, and that is I noticed that about him being streaky because I had
- 35:58him in a couple of spots this past year and he's streaky, but he's
- 36:01also like a set it and forget it that by that it's all by the
- 36:06time it's all said and done in your season, Like he puts up pretty
- 36:09much what he just did last year for the d BAX. It's just that
- 36:13some of the troughs are really low and the the peaks are really high,
- 36:16and you got it just weather at all. It's the beast with protistory baseball.
- 36:22Yeah, and I think that. I do think some people are gonna
- 36:23look at his line of last few years and see his twenty twenty two season
- 36:27with Toronto or over one hundred and twenty one games, he had five homers,
- 36:30and they're gonna go, uh, what is that? And he had
- 36:35terrible luck that year. His home run for fly ball ratio was like a
- 36:38third of his career career average, And every other year it's been it's been,
- 36:43you know, kind of where it was last year. So you might
- 36:45get a little bit of a discount if people are looking back to say,
- 36:49okay was last year real he had a few really rough months. I think
- 36:52that they're, like I said, there there's some some value to be had
- 36:57there as I think it's your fourth outfielder. Yeah, definitely, and right
- 37:02back into the range. I guess I should have grouped these better, but
- 37:06right back into the range of your mid tier, third, fourth starter.
- 37:10We're going with Jack claerty signing with the Detroit Tigers this past week on a
- 37:15one year, fourteen million dollar deal where he should get a crack at the
- 37:22rotation. I'm not sure how long he'll stick in it, coming off of
- 37:24a really rough season in Saint Louis, and Baltimore, in which he had
- 37:29a four to nine RA, which is kind of low considered where it was
- 37:36most of the season is hovering much higher than that, and a whip that
- 37:39absolutely destroyed you with a one fifty eight whip. He had eight wins and
- 37:45that all came in one hundred and forty four innings with a nine point two
- 37:49K nine. That Clarity is one of these guys where like, I like
- 37:52using K nine just because it's usually a pretty simple metric and when you're evaluating
- 37:58good pictures, it works. But one of the drawbacks is if you have
- 38:02a pitcher who walks a lot of dudes like Flarity, who walked four point
- 38:07one per nine last year, that it's better to evaluate K percentage with somebody
- 38:14like Jack Flarity. And that's where it looks awful at twenty two point eight,
- 38:16I guess, not awful, but it brings it certainly back below average
- 38:21when that nine to two K nine looks much nicer, you know, And
- 38:24so you can already tell I'm down on Jack Flarity. Maybe some of it's
- 38:30my bitterness from being a cards fan and just seeing where this all bound up,
- 38:35and also seeing the value of my Jack Flaherty card collection absolutely tank on
- 38:40me. That he's found a decent spot in Detroit, great division, great
- 38:45home park, But I'm just not totally sold on the skills here for Flarity,
- 38:51that he's lost a lot of velocity on his fastball, which was his
- 38:54bread and butter that everything else worked off of it. And if you can't
- 38:59get dudes to respect that fastball, they're never going to bite on the slider.
- 39:02And so I think that's what he's been running into a lot in his
- 39:07pitching repertoire. Although now that they look at like his fastball average like it
- 39:14hasn't dipped, but it just waivers a lot throughout the season and throughout starts
- 39:17that it feels so unsteady all the time. Brew, are you in the
- 39:22same boat? Are you still a believer in Jack Flarity? I think I'm
- 39:25mostly in the same boat. And I think the issue with Flaherty is,
- 39:29like I don't think the talent has disappeared with Jack Flaherty, it's the consistency,
- 39:35Like he he's the guy. I remember We're watching a few starts last
- 39:38year where he would walk five guys, strike out five guys, and give
- 39:44up one run and be like and then the next start it would be the
- 39:49same thing, but he go up to seven. Right. It's he really
- 39:52struggled with that consistency and being able, and it's been a number of years
- 39:58that he's he just hasn't been healthy enough to get enough innings, uh to
- 40:01to really make something of his pitch arsenal. Like from a pitch arsenal perspective,
- 40:08I'm gonna gonna have some fun with it. Here comps for his Lossya
- 40:14movement on out on Baseball Savant. You've got Johann Oviedo, so not nothing
- 40:21too exciting. Nate Pearson definitely some potential, Tuki Tissant nothing this Max Sure's
- 40:25your guy. I heard he's pretty good. Mitch Keller like his pitch arsenal
- 40:31is actually pretty decent. He really has just struggled to maintain and be consistent.
- 40:39And that's I think what the problem was with Clarity is that he's been
- 40:44so inconsistent. He struggled so much with his his control that I think that
- 40:49the control piece is what's is really hurt his confidence because he was a guy
- 40:53that was i'd say a three walk per nine guy for years, for years
- 40:58consistently and he's basically been a four or five K por nine guy for the
- 41:04last you know, two years, and he's just he can't get out of
- 41:07that. You can't Houdini your way out of having that many guys on base.
- 41:10And then he's not going deep inte to games. So I think the
- 41:14skills are still there. He's just got so much gosh star and rust on
- 41:17him that he hasn't that he can't get out of his own way. He's
- 41:22the kind of guy that if I heard he went to drive line over the
- 41:25over the winter, I would be really really interested in Jack Flaherty. But
- 41:30I've got to see that control improve. But if it does, I think
- 41:35Flarity could be a little bit of hidden gym. I think he everything else
- 41:38about that profile still is very very exciting. If he doesn't have the guys
- 41:44on base, he's not walking him, He's going to be a pretty pretty
- 41:47valuable pitcher for basically the cost of nothing. So I'm a little higher than
- 41:53you on Flarity. I'm not drafting almost' be very clear here, I'm not.
- 41:55I'm not picking him up in drafts. But if he's going through bring
- 42:00training and he's not walking guys, I'm looking at him a little bit closer.
- 42:04Okay, Yeah, I think that makes sense. Okay, Then we've
- 42:07got a signing that broke. I guess it was last night, but broke
- 42:12a lot more so this morning. And that is as we're recording here on
- 42:15December twentieth. That is Andrew McCutcheon re signing with the Pirates and returning on
- 42:21a one year, five million dollar deal. His season ended a little bit
- 42:25prematurely when he succumbed to a torn achilles, Like every thirty six year old
- 42:30is kind of what I want to do. He's going to be thirty seven
- 42:34going into next year. But he was a really sneaky good fantasy player this
- 42:38year that I remember looking through all sorts of rankings throughout the year while he
- 42:44was playing, and he was consistently up there in outfield ranking because he in
- 42:50one hundred and twelve games, so it's about three fourths of the season.
- 42:52He got in four hundred and seventy at bats, mostly dhing, but he
- 42:58popped twelve homers for you and stole eleven bases, picked up fifty five runs
- 43:02and hit two fifty six, so he wasn't really a detriment on any of
- 43:07those and he put up forty three RBI, so he was able to hang.
- 43:10But wow, to get that out of like your fourth and fifth spot
- 43:15and your outfield, Like we were just saying, it's been a really shallow,
- 43:19shallow position as lots of teams have started to put platoons out there,
- 43:23so finding full time at bats and outfield spots for fantasy has become really difficult.
- 43:29Over the past couple of years, Cutch really came through with the double
- 43:32digit stolen bases and double digit homers that I think this is another guy in
- 43:38the spring you maybe want to see how he's doing with that Achilles, because
- 43:43if there's another possibility that he can go through the season and give you double
- 43:46digit homers in double digit stolen bases, I think he's a really fantastic bench
- 43:52piece that can sub in when you've got an outfielder, especially in weekly leagues
- 43:57that you know maybe only has five games or is slumping or is banged up.
- 44:01That touch provides a lot of good depth to be able to help you
- 44:07just keep pace in runs RBI average and then maybe be a plus for you
- 44:14in homers and stolen bases. Brew What do you think and did I alert
- 44:19you to the dead cat bounce that that cuch had last year kind of out
- 44:22of nowhere. Yeah, to a degree. Did I'm looking actually his stat
- 44:27cast profile a little bit here going he was better than I thought he Yeah,
- 44:31I mean he was sneaky value. And I was just looking at ADP.
- 44:37It's like seven hundred something like that. Yeah, touch, like he's
- 44:39he's not getting drafted anywhere. Is you know, baked into the age things
- 44:43like that. But you know, he he's just developed as a hitter.
- 44:49He's become a smarter hitter. He's he's so much more patient. He's one
- 44:52of the best of the league at walk getting on base. So from even
- 44:55a OBP perspective like that, he's actually even more valuable to that. So
- 45:00I think you're right, Like he's the he's the guy that you want as
- 45:04a bench piece you are at the end of the draft. You need a
- 45:08sixth outfielder to air, and he's basically free. He's a guy that you
- 45:13can be very happy plugging in because he's not likely to bring a lot of
- 45:16ophers for you and he's just gonna give you a few slightly above replacement level
- 45:22or at replacement level games. So I I had zero desire like when I
- 45:29when we were talking about it, I even look at him like I asked
- 45:30the queshion he's he's he's washed up, he's old, he's you know,
- 45:34not doing much anymore. He's younger than I am, but uh I think
- 45:40not I'm much here. Uh No, he's older than you by like just
- 45:45nearly a month. Oh look at that. Now I gotta go try out
- 45:50for the Pirates now, I see. Sorry, but this POD's gonna be
- 45:53put on hold for a years. Uh. I'm glad to see that though,
- 45:58too, because he's just like the one of the last dudes that's older
- 46:00than us that's in the league. He's like one in three or four.
- 46:02Right. Yeah, I just know I'm going to plow my achilles next year.
- 46:07So yeah, I know, I'm just kind of flabbergasses as I look
- 46:12at this lie that you're talking about. Uh, he's just a lot more
- 46:15solid than I think. And you compare him to the guy like Renfro that
- 46:17we were just talking about. Yeah, I'd much rather have him a cutch
- 46:21and I know, just because of that floor and it seems like there's a
- 46:23little stability that you can gain from him. So I'm a lot more intrigued
- 46:28again. I'm not gonna be drafting him targeting him, but he's at the
- 46:31end of the draft. I'm sitting here trying to fill something out. I'm
- 46:34not quite sure that he like has his upside of liking I might just grab
- 46:39a sher of mc cutch and especially in the deeper league, to just have
- 46:43around. Yeah. I know, he had three seventy eight opp last year.
- 46:47That's it's nuts, scribble. It came with a yeah, I have
- 46:51fifteen point nine percent walk rate that like. Yeah, he's he's turned into
- 46:54a great DH And you wonder if maybe he actually can string together there are
- 47:00a couple more years here, and if he does, he's gonna push himself
- 47:04into a Hall of Fame conversation, especially if he can kind of like get
- 47:07the Pirates back into the playoffs one more time. Yeah, and even from
- 47:13a speed perspective, I mean he's still and you know, top quarter of
- 47:19the league from speed perspective, number one by an age perspective, LEB be
- 47:23very clear here. He's definitely got that for all the thirty six thirty seven
- 47:30year olds out there, But overall he's still he's still he can still move,
- 47:35so uh, you know that I wouldn't be surprised that Eleven Stone basse
- 47:37Yah last year. I he coul add a little bit too that it's not
- 47:40all the question. The question is is he faster or slower than Jake Berger.
- 47:49I've I will never wag in on Jake Burger's speed ever again. Jake
- 47:52Burger is sneak, sneaky fast, little speed demon. Okay, well,
- 47:59I think it's the name. I think it's just I mean, he's not
- 48:01doing too much like in terms of like what he is presenting to you physically
- 48:07as well, so he wouldn't expected from a corner guy like that with two
- 48:13Achilles injuries of his own. So maybe the Achilles like healing process will maybe
- 48:20even make touch faster. Who knows. Maybe I feel like Jake Burger would
- 48:23fit well in this pod uh kind of kind of guy you want to bring
- 48:28on. It just feels like the body type of profile, what is that
- 48:31which would fit well? Yeah, I think he's a good dude. I've
- 48:36I've kind of been around him for like some close on fieldish conversations and he
- 48:40seems like a good dude. Miss Youve Jake. Okay, let's move on
- 48:46to the southeast. Of the country as the Braves are up to more Shenanigan's
- 48:53here. Uh, just to see again if check in on you see if
- 48:59you've any theories on what Alexanthopoulos is putting together with the Braves in a really
- 49:07bill bewildering, bewildering off season. Here that he opened it up by trading
- 49:13five dudes Varreon Bummer Obviously there were like five dudes he was about to cut
- 49:16at the non tender deadline to move on a little cash there. Then ended
- 49:22up training for Jared Kellnick and also picking up Marco Gonzalez and Evan White,
- 49:28and the deal then traded away Marco Gonzalez and Evan White, traded for David
- 49:35Fletcher and Max Stassy. That's where Evan White ended up with the Angels,
- 49:38then traded Max Stassy and cut David Fletcher. Now this past week, Anthopolos
- 49:45has traded for Mat Carpenter from the Padres to acquire his salary to get the
- 49:50lefty Ray Kerr, and then cut Matt Carpenter. So it's a very strange
- 49:57route of kind of going and getting these dudes with extra service time, I
- 50:01think is what he's trying to build out some depth in Atlanta. But why
- 50:07isn't he just buying free agents with this money? Like I don't quite get
- 50:12this, because like the money that they've been shuffling around, like you could
- 50:16have bought like Josh Schader at this point, or like a back end starter
- 50:22or another outfielder or you know what I mean, Like he's got these collections
- 50:27of pieces where you're just like, I don't know if there's some sort of
- 50:30like back room shanigans or if he's just trying to like if he's in some
- 50:35sort of handshake gentlemen's agreement to make the most deals between him and Jerry Depota
- 50:38this offseason. Yeah, well, I mean that the likelihood of that versus
- 50:43any other theory, I think the how you might have the house odds.
- 50:46But you know, it does feel like there's something going on. And I
- 50:51haven't dug deep enough to look at this, but it's almost like they have
- 50:54a TV contract that runs out this year and they don't want to sign anybody
- 51:00because to a longer term deal. Because you're right, they have they spent
- 51:05a lot of money just to quiet like buying guys, but they're buying guys
- 51:08that have years of team control left that you know, but they can cut
- 51:14bait if they need to. So it's like they're they have some money that
- 51:16they can they can spend like in the budget somewhere, maybe just from the
- 51:20playoff run last year or something like that, Like they've got this many to
- 51:22burn, but then in the out years they're a little worried about what the
- 51:27payroll is going to look like. So there's like, well, I'm not
- 51:29going to sign a lancel into a contract. I don't want to commit that
- 51:32that role. I can't do something like that. I can't convince a reliever
- 51:38to come out of a one year deal. So I'm gonna just go out
- 51:42out and buy these high upside guys like Kellen Nick Kerr and see if I
- 51:47get something. And if I do, I was just out my cash for
- 51:51one year that I bought their rights, and if not, oh well.
- 51:55So it is very interesting. I feel bad for Matt Carpenter to a degree.
- 52:01I actually kind of liked the landing spot for a brief second of Matt
- 52:05Carpenter in Atlanta. I kind of felt like that kind of when he went
- 52:08to the Yankees, like hey, if you just got in like the perfect
- 52:12spot, he can make can do some damage, like the very perfect spot,
- 52:15like right pitcher, right handedness, like he can do some damage.
- 52:21But now I think Matt Carpenter might be out of the job, might be
- 52:23able to league at this point, So it'll be very He's probably gonna come
- 52:29back to the Cardinals all of Albert Poole holes and hit you know, twenty
- 52:31five homers and take playing time from Jordan Walker or something like that. For
- 52:37for all we know, they're with all the marmal So yeah, I guess
- 52:42we'll see. I do agree. I think probably Matt Carpenter's done. It
- 52:45was a really rough season last year as he kind of morphed back into the
- 52:49Pumpkin after what he showed in New York. But I'm really excited for when
- 52:53we get back together and can review some more Braves trades and who else they've
- 52:59cut. Because it's also like it's you just don't see anything like this.
- 53:02I think nowadays in MLB that it's feels like some sort of video game maneuvers,
- 53:08and so it just I wonder if Anthopless forgets that, like these are
- 53:13real human people that he's moving around. Yeah, it's like like you could
- 53:16just see him sitting in his office with a spreadsheet the whole time. It
- 53:20just like, eh, move this one here, and move this one here.
- 53:22And you've got the all the guys that are working down in the clubhouse
- 53:25to get the lockers ready to do all the movie logistics and planning for everything,
- 53:30and they're like, they just got the locker signs produced and everything ready
- 53:34to go. They got the new bags, and they're like, gosh,
- 53:36dang, its like you're gonna find Matt Carboner stuff on sale with braves jerseys
- 53:40next year because they started printing them too early. So well, if you're
- 53:45looking for a gear that's not on sale, we do have a official cards
- 53:52and categories merchandise still, and that link to the merch shop is in the
- 53:58show notes. Got a hat up there, a couple of shirts and a
- 54:01mug. I love the mug and I'm wearing one of the hats right now.
- 54:05It's warm for the winter. Got nice beanies and the mugs are crisps.
- 54:10So if you're looking for some gear, I can guarantee you you won't
- 54:14have it before Christmas. The way that the website works that yeah, there's
- 54:22no way you're getting at this point. But yeah, if you're looking for
- 54:23a nice Valentine's Day present. I suggest some cards and categories gear, and
- 54:30we're going to get into the cards category when we come back after this break.
- 54:34We're going to dive into what could be another scandal coming out of Bowman
- 54:42Draft, or is it. We'll see when we come back after the break.
- 55:07All right, welcome back everybody to the card section here of cards and
- 55:14categories. And I hinted at it before the break, but I guess technically
- 55:19it is a little bit of a scandal. As you were mentioning to me,
- 55:22Jeremy, that there's been something that's come out with Bowman Draft and some
- 55:30duplicate super fractors. Again that when we did the big review of Bowman Draft
- 55:35twenty twenty three the other week, I was tempted to ask you this question
- 55:40if you thought that there was going to be another controversy around duplicate super fractors
- 55:46coming out in a Bowman set, if you recall, and even here with
- 55:51us on the pod for a little bit, the when did Bowmen Chrome come
- 55:55out? Like October November somewhere in there. S October sometime there. Yeah,
- 56:01but I think they've really started breaking harder into late October and early November
- 56:07was people were discovering that there were multiple one of one super fractors out there
- 56:13of Bowman Chrome Prospect cards. So if you're not familiar with what super fractor
- 56:17one of one cards are, it's just what it sounds like in the name.
- 56:21It's a one of one card. It's the only one that exists in
- 56:24the entire world. And what Tops is inserting these as is usually they're super
- 56:31fractors where they're gold with this little vinyl printing pattern on it, which I
- 56:38mean, I've never actually seen one in person, now that I think about
- 56:43it, and held one, I guess I've seen one at like a show,
- 56:45you know, but I've never like really been that close to a one
- 56:51of one, never pulled one, and so it's a little hard to describe
- 56:54it based off of the pictures I've seen, but it does have a little
- 56:58bit of like a gold vinyl and it should be the only one that exists,
- 57:01so it's obviously a huge deal if there's more than one out there from
- 57:06Bowman Chrome. It was determined that there were copies that were meant to be
- 57:09sent to players and copies that were meant to be put in the product,
- 57:14and there was some sort of mix up and some ended up that were supposed
- 57:19to go to players in the product, giving you multiple one of ones.
- 57:23Tops and Finacs resolved that issue by issuing bounties and lining that up, and
- 57:30I haven't checked in on that in a little bit. Grew in terms of
- 57:32like how many bounties have been claimed and stuff, but I'm sure that those
- 57:37are starting to get filled out here and there. But it looked like we
- 57:40might have something similar here with Bowman Draft as recently someone had pulled a super
- 57:49fractor of a card, went online with eBay and saw that it was also
- 57:52on eBay, but at the end of the day it had a different numbering
- 57:59system, So the one on eBay had a one on one on the back,
- 58:02the one that was pulled and showed on Twitter had a one of one
- 58:07on the front. All came out. We'll link to all this in the
- 58:12show notes as well. That what happened was there was a Fanatics Slash Tops
- 58:17employee down in one of the plants in Texas that was stealing some of the
- 58:22extra runoff from the printing presses and had been using this eBay account for a
- 58:28long time to sell multiple like dozens and even hundreds of one of One's and
- 58:34other rare cards, especially like of tens the acetates from Top's flagship or are
- 58:38these clear acetate cards that are printed to ten apiece and he was selling lots
- 58:43of those two. Obviously, when they're printing these cards in the factories,
- 58:47they're making multiple versions of these really rare cards and trying to put the best
- 58:52ones in the product, and also you know, running test runs and things
- 58:55like that, so there is runoff. But this is really crazy that,
- 59:00like you know, an employee that's working on the line can just walk out
- 59:05with these extra ones, list them on eBay and go undetected for a long
- 59:09time. So, Brew, that's the summary, kind of the quick and
- 59:14dirty of what happened. Like I said, I'll link to it in all
- 59:16the show notes so people can read the details and the nice kind of PR
- 59:21releases about it. And I'm glad to see that it resolved better than the
- 59:25first one from Bowman Chrome that it involves some nefarious action from somebody else.
- 59:31But Brew, what's your take on this and any kind of points of interest
- 59:36from the story that really spoke to you? Yeah, I it is.
- 59:40It is very interesting and I hate to say, like, it's surprising it
- 59:44took so long for something like this to happen. You got to think,
- 59:46you know, working on a production line something like that, it's so tempting
- 59:51to you know, pick these off. These are you know, thousand dollars
- 59:53bills being printed in front of you to a degree, and you know it,
- 59:59it makes I hate to say, it makes sense, but it only
- 1:00:01takes one person to kind of ruin this to a degree. And I would
- 1:00:07want to make sure we're clear of the volume that we're talking. Uh,
- 1:00:09this one eBay account was selling twelve percent of all superfractors from this set,
- 1:00:16so I think they had like twenty four or twenty five superfractors that they were
- 1:00:22they were selling. And you know, the plant, the FedEx printing press
- 1:00:27plants, whatever, I don't know, like we call it production facility is
- 1:00:30in the Dallas Fort Worth area. And then the user name was like DFW
- 1:00:35card Shark, like Dallasport Worth A card Shark is like, we're like,
- 1:00:38there's nothing besides hiding in plain sight that you're going after. And I guess
- 1:00:44like if you're gonna be if you're gonna make the move to steal them,
- 1:00:46and you're not the sharpest knife from the drawer here, which also goes to
- 1:00:51the fact that you are then listing twenty four of them on eBay at the
- 1:00:54same time. It's amazing, Like wouldn't you like, I mean, I'm
- 1:01:00I'm not like a criminal, but even like I would make separate eBay accounts
- 1:01:04and like, there's it's so obvia accounts, shows like trades like post on
- 1:01:12Exit, look what I pulled, and you do something like that. It's
- 1:01:15just like, Nope, it didn't quite go that way. So it's it's
- 1:01:20interesting. I guess the unfortunately at this point the odds on some type of
- 1:01:23one of one's scandal and Bowman products uh taking the over on most of those
- 1:01:29odds at this point in time, So it was it was unfortunate. But
- 1:01:35I think to your point, there was very quick resolution on this one.
- 1:01:39So I'll let you kind of talk about the the full resolution there if if
- 1:01:44you want to. Yeah, And like I said, this is in the
- 1:01:47show notes. It's coming from I'm not even sure quite how to refer to
- 1:01:52him because I don't even really follow him on Twitter. He just is one
- 1:01:54of these card accounts on Twitter that appear in my feed, and I think
- 1:01:59everybody in hobby Twitter knows who he is. It's Mario Alejandro, which is
- 1:02:04Baseball at Baseball card blog Baseball spilled the Spanish way and so he had the
- 1:02:12exclusive break from Fanatics on this news that they investigated it and determined that they
- 1:02:19were stolen, and so everybody who has stolen a card from that account or
- 1:02:24has purchased a stolen card from that account on eBay over time will get fully
- 1:02:31reimbursed by Fanatics, which is really about the only thing they could do,
- 1:02:37because it's really their internal systems and controls that broke down here to be able
- 1:02:42to allow this to even happen. That you would think that there would be
- 1:02:45some sort of mandatory set up to be able to destroy all these test prints
- 1:02:52and print offs, and like you said, they're printing thousands of dollars in
- 1:02:58product here that it's We've discussed this recently in terms of like it is a
- 1:03:02strange product to sell and put on the retail market for consumers because there's this
- 1:03:12weird gray zone between what you're selling all the product at at retail and what
- 1:03:16it's actually worth for on the market. That you know, it's pretty easy
- 1:03:21to walk out with these cars if you don't have the right processes in place,
- 1:03:25which really boils down to at the end of the day, fanatics cost
- 1:03:30cutting that like it involves just having another person there or having a quality control
- 1:03:36system in place that would come around and check people's stations at the end of
- 1:03:40the day and do inventorying that if you don't know, I work in like
- 1:03:45accounting and auditing during my day jobs, so I'm familiar with these things a
- 1:03:50little bit. That it's it's just mind blowing from that perspective that you know,
- 1:03:54you would think that they are aware of the value of some of the
- 1:03:59things that I have, and especially you're thinking about some of the game used
- 1:04:03relics and stuff from you know, Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, and they've
- 1:04:10got tons of valuable things that they've got to be tracking. And so it
- 1:04:15just really does open up a bit of a Pandora's box to thinking, hey,
- 1:04:18this is a pretty basic manufacturing control that should be in place at a
- 1:04:25baseball card printing company that it would be I don't know, maybe like the
- 1:04:29second thing I would implement on my list after making sure my factory was saved,
- 1:04:33and so like that does obviously I think it also tells you why some
- 1:04:42of these issues have really cropped up for fanatics and tops and Pannini in recent
- 1:04:46years is because if things are lucy goosey enough that somebody can get away with
- 1:04:54taking runoff from the manufacturing floor and listing it under the most obs eBay acount
- 1:05:00and you can imagine and just like moving, like you said, twelve percent
- 1:05:05of super factors from a product, like, how do you also, as
- 1:05:10fanatics Panini tops not have some sort of like system in place where you're also
- 1:05:16tracking eBay sales? And you know they already are because they're working with eBay
- 1:05:21on authentication and they're trying to move some of the like card breaking in house
- 1:05:27and things like that, so they have lots of little like tentacles all over
- 1:05:30the place. That's strange that the tentacles weren't involved here. Yeah, it
- 1:05:34feels like you should have some machine learning algorithm running at all times on at
- 1:05:41least eBay sales to find any odd these like this, like you think you
- 1:05:46know, But the question it raises for me is, you know, how
- 1:05:50many have times with something like this happened but we just don't know? You
- 1:05:55know, every time you know you have to think the one on one being
- 1:05:58print on the back for the front is a quality control type measure, right
- 1:06:00where they're trying to not completely mimic the cards, but you still test the
- 1:06:05the the production line. So but if if you or I walked out of
- 1:06:12a factory with twenty four one of one's, uh, you know, we're
- 1:06:16nobody. We walk into a card show or a pawn shop or a you
- 1:06:20know, a local card shop and say, hey, I pulled this I
- 1:06:24or I I bought this from a guy, right, and you just kind
- 1:06:29of sneak it into production for cash, like, into the into the card
- 1:06:33market. Like it's it's not that hard. And especially if it's not one
- 1:06:36on ones, right, if you're talking something that's you know, it's so
- 1:06:41hard to find, but a fifty something like that, the likelihood that that
- 1:06:45gets caught is so incredibly low that it makes me wonder, to your point,
- 1:06:50like one on one, how often has this happened with something else that
- 1:06:58we just don't know about and we will like the never know. So it
- 1:07:00does concern me to agree that you know this can happen. You have to
- 1:07:03think this is going to put some change into fanatics that they are going to
- 1:07:06put a little bit more quality control safety measures in place with production. But
- 1:07:14I feel like we've said this before, so the feeling deje vous all over
- 1:07:17again is Yogi Bear would say, yeah, and you do just kind of
- 1:07:21wonder it goes along with the other things that we've discussed that have been detrimental
- 1:07:27from a pr perspective for fanatics and tops since we've started this pod. Just
- 1:07:30think of all the things that we've discussed over this half year, and when
- 1:07:36it's all kind of concentrated, I think you lose track of it all.
- 1:07:41But it does create long term effects in terms of just grinding on people,
- 1:07:46and there's been so many at this point too that you have to think it
- 1:07:51has turned some people off from this hobby and you have lost them forever.
- 1:07:57That along with just everything else in terms of like prices and stuff that,
- 1:08:00like, it just ories me that like where I'm always worried about this hobby
- 1:08:06going is to the point where it just is driving so many people out that
- 1:08:11there's no future growth to it. And yeah, it's it's a bummer because
- 1:08:15it's been just like such a big part of my life and just enjoying baseball
- 1:08:20overall that like it's been I think mirroring where baseball has gone on the same
- 1:08:29point as well, like with the owners really taking the game out of the
- 1:08:31hands of the fans, and like it's just mind boggling to me because like
- 1:08:40you want to really see these people be stewards of the game and stewards of
- 1:08:45this hobby that like you could grow it and like organically do it and not
- 1:08:49try to strip mine all the money out of it. That this is what
- 1:08:54happens when you're strip minding all the money out of it, you know.
- 1:08:57Yeah, it feels like something a short term growth plan. Not a lot
- 1:09:00of people exactly. I totally agree. But yeah, since I figured,
- 1:09:05since we're on the topic of one of ones here, not even to mention
- 1:09:10I'm really looking forward to previewing twenty twenty four Bowman, which is coming out
- 1:09:15early next year, just to see what controversy you think could be stirred up
- 1:09:18there. But I thought, since this is a conversation involving one of ones,
- 1:09:24we could have just a little discussion on our own personal one of ones.
- 1:09:28And I think they're a special part of any collector's personal collection, their
- 1:09:32PCs of trying to obtain one of one cards and being the only sole owner,
- 1:09:39whether you're hunting down a one of one Oh Tony and have the deep
- 1:09:43pockets for that, or if you're hunting down a one of one Jake Berger
- 1:09:46or some other backup infielder that you know, it's great to see kind of
- 1:09:51both ends of the spectrum be collected within the hobby that I think. That's
- 1:09:57one of my favorite things on Reddit is seeing some of the really random personal
- 1:10:03collections PCs of one of ones that people have, but then also using those
- 1:10:08one of ones to build out rainbows and being able to put together an entire
- 1:10:13set of every one of those refractors that we're listing off when we have those
- 1:10:17new releases, that there are people crazy enough to go down there and track
- 1:10:21every one of those versions from some of those sets. So I guess I
- 1:10:27should also start with there's different types of one of ones out there. You
- 1:10:30will have what we were referring to in this scandal and what happened to Bowman
- 1:10:34Chrome with the superfractors, which is the gold vinyl printed cards. You will
- 1:10:40have one of ones that are printing plates that if you've been listening to those
- 1:10:45rundowns of all the card parallels that we've been listening. You have usually black,
- 1:10:50yellow, cayenne, and magenta because those are your typical printing plates when
- 1:10:57you're printing on old school paper. So you've got each one of those and
- 1:11:01those are unique because you know, they are what they use on the printing
- 1:11:05process, and only one of each of those colors exists. And then you
- 1:11:11have other one of ones that are just I know, for Flagship nowadays,
- 1:11:15it's the platinum parallel. It's like a grayish silverish parallel. So you'll see
- 1:11:21lots of other different variations, but typically superfractors and printing plates are the main
- 1:11:28ones. So brew like, what's your kind of favorite of those types of
- 1:11:31one of ones and what does your collection hold? Have you ever pulled any?
- 1:11:36Yeah, so I think that there's like to your point, there's a
- 1:11:40variety number a different one of ones, and they definitely range in value and
- 1:11:45desirability. The superfractors has to be the you know, gold standard if I
- 1:11:49if I may gold printed superfractors of the one of one that like, that's
- 1:11:57if that's what you what you're after, Flat tops, Flagship Bowman getting that
- 1:12:01that type of the superfactor is kind of the standard that you're after, but
- 1:12:06there's a lot of different ones out there from you know, the printing plates
- 1:12:12if you're over in Leaf. They do a lot of proofs out there,
- 1:12:16so it's a you might get the front side of the card but not have
- 1:12:19the backside. It might be an unnumbered, different colored version that they're trying
- 1:12:27to do, and they do a lot of encased one of ones. So
- 1:12:30you know, my my personal collection, and I did not count before we
- 1:12:34had this conversation, I probably have somewhere between five and ten one of ones
- 1:12:39somewhere in there. You know, there there's one of ones that just aren't
- 1:12:44valuable, all kind of like you know, third tier companies that put them
- 1:12:46out there and they make a one of one, but they have like one
- 1:12:50hundred one of ones because there's just a different image on every card, and
- 1:12:55so like your best players are still like a ten dollars one of one.
- 1:12:58I got a few of those. Those don't really count because I don't know
- 1:13:00if you can really call those a one of one. Got a number of
- 1:13:04the printing proofs from from Leaf of some of my PCs, like nolle Off
- 1:13:15the pod that I just picked up two one of one from Griffin Roberts,
- 1:13:17a first round draft pick of the Cardinals, is now in the league.
- 1:13:20Those were I was very excited to find those, but it's also a reason
- 1:13:24I was able to pay five dollars for each of them. When you fizzle
- 1:13:27out after about two years in the minors, UH Valley doesn't hold probably the
- 1:13:32one that I'm chased the most. So, like I said, I had
- 1:13:39a number one on ones, I've had someone one sold to one on ones,
- 1:13:41things like that. But the I think the hardest part of being a
- 1:13:45collector is if you're after a specific one of one because you may never see
- 1:13:49it. And I've I've been on a quest for the last oh year and
- 1:13:57a half, if you if you want to call it that, searching for
- 1:14:00a tops Now one of one that I have the entire rainbow of everything else.
- 1:14:06And it was from a game that I went to. I went to
- 1:14:10a Cardinals game where Nolan Gorman his first career home run and Matthew Lebator won
- 1:14:15his first career game. I was at that game. You know, I
- 1:14:17got a game used baseball from it, and I went through and tried to
- 1:14:20collect the entire rainbow of the tops Now and I've got every single of the
- 1:14:26base cards except for the one on one. I've started the autographs, but
- 1:14:30I have no idea if I will ever see that one of one, and
- 1:14:34I know if I do, it does not matter what it costs. I
- 1:14:38have to buy it because that is what I have been chasing. And so
- 1:14:42as a collector, there's this beauty of the one on ones, but there's
- 1:14:45also this like internal suffrage of there's only one. And so if there's another
- 1:14:51guy out there going after the same thing you are and they get there first,
- 1:14:55you're just so well, you are out of luck. You are not
- 1:14:58getting kids card. So for me, I've, like I said, I
- 1:15:01got a few of them. How about you? How many how many one
- 1:15:05ones do you have? I've never personally pulled one, strive for the day
- 1:15:12to uh to do that, and I'm not counting. I think, like
- 1:15:15I said, Leaf has a tendency to put out like boxes out with like
- 1:15:19in case one of one printer proofs. Those don't count when you buy a
- 1:15:24box that says what's included? Uh where we're talking about the ones that are
- 1:15:27a little bit, a little bit harder to find. They're not kind of
- 1:15:29manufactured intentionally out of the p for marketing purposes. So I don't know what
- 1:15:35about you, what's your one of one journey? Yeah, as you can
- 1:15:41maybe tell from when I was talking about, I don't even know what gold
- 1:15:45vinyl super factors like are totally like textured, as I've never pulled one.
- 1:15:51It would be really awesome that, Like I'm looking forward to the day to
- 1:15:55do it, because then becomes the eternal question of do you try to go
- 1:16:00and get the rest of the rainbow, because like that's the easiest way to
- 1:16:03start one of the rainbows is starting with the hardest card and then working your
- 1:16:08way back that I think it would be really fun to put together an entire
- 1:16:12rainbow. But yeah, I've never pulled one. I have a slightly smaller
- 1:16:17collection of one of ones than you do. I don't have any kind of
- 1:16:24like true one of ones. I don't have like any true super fractors,
- 1:16:27none of the like the platinum parallels, none of the actual gold vinyl super
- 1:16:31fractors. What I do have is one printing plate, Is that right?
- 1:16:36Yeah? I think just the one printing plate of it's from the twenty twenty
- 1:16:41two set of Wainwright being a League leader in Wins. Was he a Wins
- 1:16:47leader in twenty twenty two, I believe, And so I have the magenta
- 1:16:54plate from that and then the other one of ones I have I think three
- 1:17:00now of from TOPS Archives Signatures Tops Signatures Archives. I don't remember which way
- 1:17:05it goes, but that's the set where they work with current and former players
- 1:17:12to What they do is they buy back or recollect old just common base cards
- 1:17:16usually of players, and then take them to sign them and then reprint them
- 1:17:23with short printed numbers. So they're kind of like fake one of ones some
- 1:17:29people call them because what they are is like essentially a TOP certified in person
- 1:17:33autograph. But what TOPS does is tries to limit those for the most part,
- 1:17:40although that can also maybe go into our controversy list because I have seen
- 1:17:45sometimes from Top Tops Archives where they have one of ones of like the same
- 1:17:49card signed by a player, and it's like one is printed in twenty twenty
- 1:17:55two Tops Archives and the other ones in twenty twenty three, so they like
- 1:18:00multiple the signatures and printed one of one's different years. But I haven't seen
- 1:18:03that for the ones I have, which are especially like if they're Ozzie Smith
- 1:18:09ones of that for stadium clubs. Oh, it's that's maybe like my ultimate
- 1:18:13weakness, that that's what two of them are, and so whenever one of
- 1:18:16those pops up, I try to collect them. But yeah, like you
- 1:18:20said, it is like been an interesting twist I think to the hobby since
- 1:18:27I've re entered, you know, within the past couple of years that back
- 1:18:30in the nineties this wasn't really quite as much of a thing. That weren't
- 1:18:35really quite as many parallels to chase, and certainly not as many numbered cards.
- 1:18:43So it's been a change to the collecting of the cards overall because it's
- 1:18:49just been a foundational shift as people are really trying to seek out and battle
- 1:18:56over these one of one cards within their personal collections. Yeah, it's it's
- 1:19:00almost you go back to your point in like the late nineties when number of
- 1:19:04cards first started coming out, and it's I think today it's like you might
- 1:19:09have had a card number out of one hundred back in the late nineties,
- 1:19:12and now it's almost as rare as out of five. I don't know what
- 1:19:15the comparison is to because you have so many different one of ones, so
- 1:19:20many you know, two different versions of out of five's like you start counting
- 1:19:25back and you're like, oh, about one hundred back in the day was
- 1:19:29roughly out of what ten or five something like that. Because there they are
- 1:19:32there are more plentiful, they are be more creative in using that one of
- 1:19:38one really to market the cards. You got a one on one of every
- 1:19:42single variation. Uh that seems like in a set. So one of ones
- 1:19:46are fun to your point, I have owned one super Fractor before and I
- 1:19:51regretfully do not still own X. I sold a large collection at one point
- 1:19:56of a single player, and you have to imagine that that was part of
- 1:20:00one of the selling points was a few one of ones, including a a
- 1:20:04a super Fractor you know, as a player got called up and was hot,
- 1:20:10you know, went through the roof in the market. Kind of had
- 1:20:12to capitalize on it and have regretted that sense. So it's it is a
- 1:20:17tough tough thing to do when you know, when you see really collect cards
- 1:20:20and you buy them to sell them, to sell them, to buy them,
- 1:20:23like it's a vicious cycle that we all have to to get used to.
- 1:20:26So anyway, one of the ones, they are definitely fun, definitely
- 1:20:30can can divide the market of collectors yeah, and if you're out there listening
- 1:20:36and you've pulled up one up one or have one that you're looking for and
- 1:20:42hopefully don't own bruise and are trying to extort him for it that if you've
- 1:20:48got any good insights, you can certainly email us. Email the pod at
- 1:20:53cards Categories at gmail dot com. Really, no big news coming out interns
- 1:21:00of new sets that we had that big stretch of the holiday push from Tops
- 1:21:04last week that we went over and had five consecutive days of releases. There's
- 1:21:11nothing on the calendar for the rest of twenty twenty four right now except for
- 1:21:15Panini National Treasures coming out next week on the twenty ninth. And that's not
- 1:21:19a price range that I play in with Panini National Treasures. Yeah, so
- 1:21:26we probably won't do too big of a deep dive into that. But there
- 1:21:30was one set added to the schedule that's coming out here within the next couple
- 1:21:33weeks. That is twenty twenty three Bowman's Best has been added to the schedule
- 1:21:38to be released on January seventeenth, twenty twenty four. I think we'll dive
- 1:21:42into that set a little bit more when the day draws near, But for
- 1:21:45this week, we're going to wrap up the pod, So brew can you
- 1:21:48remind all the people out there where they can find you? Yep, find

- 1:22:05So Mike, how about you. Yeah, you can find me on
- 1:22:10Twitter slash x as well at mcool seven. You can also find me on
- 1:22:15Blue Sky at mcool seven and yeah, if you're not on blue Sky yet,
- 1:22:18I think it's a really great space, especially for baseball writers and just
- 1:22:24baseball minds, that it's been much more palatable of an experience over what Twitter
- 1:22:30has been recently. Like I said, you can find the Pod Cards Categories
- 1:22:38at gmail dot com or on Twitter slash x at cards Categories. Once again,
