  SPEAKER_01: Good?
• 0:25
  SPEAKER_01: You ready?
• 0:26
SPEAKER_01: You got all them lights going where you want them?
• 0:29
  SPEAKER_05: I know.
• 0:30
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's uh that's that's pretty complicated.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_01: Semi-live from the Camo Cave.
• 0:36
  SPEAKER_05: Semi-Live.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_01: Now you're gonna have to refresh my memory of what we talked about last week.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_05: Last week we did the first five of the Ten Commandments.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_01: You know, everywhere I go now, I was at a turkey camp last week, and they were Will you would you do the Ten Commandments?
• 0:50
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Yeah, you got to wait for the podcast.
• 0:54
SPEAKER_01: So before we get into that, I had a an interesting turkey hunt, and we were up in the north part of the state, right on the Tennessee line, but we were still in Mississippi and man for some reason, and it could have been the ice storm damage and clearing out a lot of machinery and stuff, but it's and it was a really good place, but it was uh it was pretty silent.
• 1:17
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_01: Had two people hunt, took Bubba with me, and Bubba never heard a turkey in a cup.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_01: We were there like two and a half days, never heard a turkey.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_05: Is that the general like is that a lot of people saying that?
• 1:29
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm getting a lot.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it just depends on where you're at because people send me PMs and I get text every morning, and depends on what I throw out there.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_01: If I throw out something that I didn't hear one, I get a bunch of I didn't hear anything either, and they were in different states somewhere there, you know, they could be miles away, but turkeys are they're just turkeys.
• 1:50
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_01: And uh they gonna be where you find 'em.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_01: But I can tell you this, I know for a fact that g this is just me, and I'm no biologist.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_01: I don't think they gobble as good as they did back in the eighties.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_01: But you know, that that could be me and my imagination or whatever it is, but it and when it comes to re you know, when it's real is when you know they're there.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_01: Like I saw two turkeys in the afternoon late and I knew they were there in earshot and they didn't say a word.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_05: When was the side didn't you have like we called it the silent spring?
• 2:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was three, four, five years ago.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_01: We had Adam Butler on here.
• 2:31
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_01: It was the turkey biologist from Mississippi talking about that.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_01: I did a podcast called The Silent Spring, and he was, you know, and you know, most of it's just, you know, people's thoughts or their ideas or their opinions, but it's just there's they're they sometimes they just don't gobble.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_05: It's like they know, like they're learning, they're getting smarter.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it you know, a couple of those mornings were perfect.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_01: No fog, it was nice and cool, no wind.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Bubba did keep reminding me the barometer was falling.
• 3:04
  SPEAKER_05: A barometer?
• 3:06
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_05: What's did that does that affect them?
• 3:08
SPEAKER_01: I you know, I think it does.
• 3:10
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_01: Some some things are uh beyond my comprehension.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_01: You know, Tom Kelly wrote a whole book on it called Better on a Rising Tide.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_01: His buddy figured out he pulled up in his driveway and had all these charts and graphs and slide rolls and said, I'm telling you, they've gobbled better on a rising tide.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_01: But uh we did get a we did have one good hunt and the turkey was on a power line, and I'm, you know, we were set in what I thought was the perfect spot, and there it was actually two turkeys gobbling.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_01: And the closest one was across the power line and down to our left.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_01: And uh man, he was just gobbling at everything, and I did a little fly down with my hat, you know, and cackled a little bit, and he didn't say a word.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_01: And he had gobbled at everything in the world since that.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_01: And the next thing I heard, I don't know how long it was, was in the woods behind us to the left.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_01: Had a beautiful wide open landing zone out there in front, but this one I guess sailed all the way across or almost all the way across and got up in the woods to come up that side to see where the noise was coming from.
• 4:22
  SPEAKER_04: That's slick.
• 4:23
  SPEAKER_01: That is slick.
• 4:25
SPEAKER_01: And my you know, the guy in front of me with the gun, I mean, he was just hung up.
• 4:31
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_01: And uh I mean he would have had to twist almost all the way around, and about that time two hens showed up to the right and uh game over.
• 4:41
SPEAKER_01: Everybody left and showed up and got immediately quiet.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_01: But uh never trust him.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_01: And never you know, you know, you can play all the scenarios in your brain, he's gonna fly down right there and walk straight up this power line.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_01: He didn't do it.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_01: And uh so that's the way it goes.
• 4:57
  SPEAKER_04: Man.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I don't care how many commandments you got, it's always up to them.
• 5:04
  SPEAKER_01: Always up to them.
• 5:06
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 5:06
SPEAKER_01: And uh the good news about that hunt, and you know, and it's starting to warm up a lot.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_01: And so far, the only person other than you see a lot of posts on Instagram about snakes, especially if you live in the southeast.
• 5:21
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_01: And I think the only one on our crew that's actually seen one so far is you.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, in the front yard in the gravel.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_01: And you said you had a feeling before you even got to it.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_05: It was the weirdest thing.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_05: I had like a spring wreath on my front door, and I was like, you know what, I want to do a deep clean and pressure wash.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_05: So I was hauling a lot of stuff down to our little barn, and so my hands were full.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_05: I couldn't see my feet, I couldn't see the ground, but I'm I'm walking that trail, and I just I don't know how to describe it.
• 5:50
SPEAKER_05: I just I got the creeps and I kind of looked down into the right, and there was a, I think it was a rat snake.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_05: I looked it up on uh a chat GPT told me it was a rat snake.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no matter what kind it is.
• 6:01
  SPEAKER_05: I don't care.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_01: They're all copper headed rattle moccasins, as far as I'm concerned.
• 6:05
  SPEAKER_05: It's a dead snake now, I'll be honest.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_01: Which gets us to this week.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_01: We're gonna pick back up and do the last five of the Ten Commandments.
• 7:15
  SPEAKER_05: That's a good one.
• 7:16
SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, you know, everybody cuts up in hunting camp.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_01: Everybody wants to, you know, everybody wants to spook the jumpy guy.
• 7:24
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_01: There's always a jumpy guy in camp.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_01: And I that used to be me, and I'm I can still be jumpy, but like I said, with me it's just snakes.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_01: It ain't spiders or UFOs or Bigfoot, none of that stuff.
• 7:38
SPEAKER_01: But a snake, and it ain't even got to be a snake, it can be a piece of rubber holes or a broke fan belt or whatever it is.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_01: But uh to me, pranking somebody with a snake that don't like snakes is out of bounds.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_01: There's there's things that are just out of bounds.
• 7:55
  SPEAKER_05: That's too far.
• 7:56
  SPEAKER_01: You don't mess with a person's food.
• 7:59
  SPEAKER_01: Somebody's got a plate of food.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_01: You know, I saw a guy dump a whole salt shaker in some mashed potatoes one time.
• 8:04
  SPEAKER_05: I said, Don't do that.
• 8:06
  SPEAKER_05: Don't mess with people's plate.
• 8:07
  SPEAKER_01: That's right.
• 8:08
SPEAKER_01: Or and don't say nothing about nobody's wife or kid.
• 8:11
SPEAKER_01: There's just out of bounds places.
• 8:13
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 8:14
SPEAKER_01: And to me, snakes are out of bounds.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_01: With that said, you can get on whatever social media platform, especially TikTok, and just punch in snake pranks, and you can sit there for hours.
• 8:28
  SPEAKER_01: Hours laughing at it.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I gotta quit laughing at that.
• 8:32
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, of all people, why would you do that?
• 8:35
SPEAKER_01: Because I've been the other, I've been the prank, I've been the prank E.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_01: I ain't uh never been the prankster, but right.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's so many of them on TikTok.
• 8:46
  SPEAKER_01: It's just unbelievable.
• 8:47
SPEAKER_01: And a lot of them at golf courses.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_01: I saw them, you know, they got a they'll take a piece of fishing line with a hook on it and a rubber snake, and just while somebody's not looking, they'll put that hook in their shirt.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_01: And uh it's I saw them do it to an old guy, and he took off running, and bless him, his his legs bent in the most unnatural way.
• 9:08
  SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
• 9:09
SPEAKER_01: Fell down, rolled around, kicking, swatting at that thing with his golf club.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_01: I'm and then it ended.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_01: And I said, I bet you that old guy ended up in the ER.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_05: At the very least, he was sore the next day.
• 9:19
  SPEAKER_01: Oh my word.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_01: Don't do not prank with snakes.
• 9:22
  SPEAKER_01: That's a no-no.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_01: Or or anybody's food or stuff like that.
• 9:26
  SPEAKER_01: That's that that is a uh that's a prank too far.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't have to be a prank.
• 9:31
SPEAKER_01: I uh uh you know, when people ask me, tell me your best snake stories, and I hope I hadn't told them before, but uh, you know, the the most vivid one is the one that got loose in our house.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_01: And I s I'm pretty convinced I'd I brought it in, me and Bubba and and Terrell Foster and Gary Porter and all the guys, Lonnie Ford, we'd been out at the archery range.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_01: We had a and we built it.
• 9:54
SPEAKER_01: There was an archery range in the Natchez State Park called Conahall.
• 9:59
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_01: Which is Natchez Indian for bow and arrow, I think.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we used to go out there all the time.
• 10:05
SPEAKER_01: We we laid that thing out, we mowed the lanes and all that stuff, and we'd been out there shooting one day with our target bowl.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_01: I actually had a target bowl, I was deep down this rabbit hole, and I had my hard bow case was laying on the ground when I walked up to it.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_01: I was the lid was facing me.
• 10:24
  SPEAKER_01: I couldn't see the opening.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_01: And uh anyway, I kicked it shut, went home, brought all that stuff in.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_01: And to this day, I think I brought that snake in the house.
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_05: Yikes.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_01: And it was uh I th some guy told me it was a rattlesnake pilot because I ended up killing it.
• 10:40
SPEAKER_01: It was hard to identify what was left.
• 10:43
SPEAKER_01: But uh anyway, I was sitting there and took a shower and was down in the den laying down on my elbow, about to go to sleep.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_01: It's probably eight o'clock by now, and I was tired, been out there working at that archery range, and I just it's like rim sleep, and you had a it's like I had a bad dream that something brushed up against my back, and man, I jumped.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_01: You know how you'll do.
• 11:05
SPEAKER_01: And then I d I just brushed it off when I stood up.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_01: I saw that snake's tail go around the hearth of the fireplace, and it was panic after that.
• 11:13
  SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_01: But uh anyway, I called your mom who was in the shower, and I was probably screaming like a little girl because she ran down in there with a towel on her, and I said, Get me something to kill a snake.
• 11:23
SPEAKER_01: And anyway, I saw where it went, it got up in this up under a round the hearth and underneath the cabinets, which is about a three-inch gap, and I could see it.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_01: And so I I didn't want to I didn't want the thing to run out real quick.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_01: So I I put one foot on the hearth and one in a rocking chair we had over there, so I'd be up off the ground and swung at it.
• 11:44
SPEAKER_01: And uh when I did, the rocking chair moved, it just slipped and it wrenched my right knee.
• 11:50
  unknown: Yikes.
• 11:51
SPEAKER_01: Which ended up I had to get it scoped.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_01: I had to have knee surgery because of a dang snake.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I killed it and got it out of there.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_01: But I I've had so many close calls with those things, and it's I don't know if it's you know, it's I guess it's cause I look for them.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_01: I tell people all the time the the the safest place to be if you're scared of snakes, turkey hunting, is behind me.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_05: Because you're gonna see 'em.
• 12:14
  SPEAKER_01: I ain't I ain't walking up.
• 12:15
SPEAKER_01: If one bites me, it's the slickest snake on the planet.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_01: So well that said, commandment number six, thou shalt not prank with snakes.
• 12:26
  SPEAKER_01: So don't do it.
• 12:28
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_01: Commandment number seven, thou shalt not name turkeys.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_05: Thou shalt not name turkeys.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_01: And I you know, here's the last thing you ever want to do.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: If you go somewhere and you book a hunt or you going to hunt at somebody's hunting club, or you're going whatever it is, and you hear him talking about a turkey with a name, you just avoid it.
• 12:50
  SPEAKER_05: He's got history.
• 12:51
  SPEAKER_01: He's got history.
• 12:52
SPEAKER_01: Everybody's tried to kill him.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_01: He lives behind the camp.
• 12:55
SPEAKER_01: You can't call to him and just avoid him.
• 12:57
SPEAKER_01: But to me, this was all about superstitions when I say thou shalt not name turkeys, because I know just from personal history that that brings you bad luck.
• 13:08
  SPEAKER_05: The devil, the preacher.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_01: Al Capone with Will Primos.
• 13:13
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it just goes on and on and on.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_01: So I was like, that's where I want to talk about superstitions.
• 13:21
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we did a podcast on superstitions, but there's a lot of them, and people laugh it off and they say, uh, oh, that's a sign of a weak mind.
• 13:30
  SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_05: Whatever.
• 13:32
  SPEAKER_01: You do you.
• 13:32
  SPEAKER_01: I I'm very superstitious.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_01: It's like I said on the last uh the hunt talking about the Florida Veterans Hunt, you know, eating at the Golden Corral and getting the same thing.
• 13:43
  SPEAKER_01: I got a lot of them.
• 13:44
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 13:45
  SPEAKER_01: You do.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_01: I do have a lot of them.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_05: I got a pair of things on the bed.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_01: I got a pair of brown uh circulation Dr.
• 13:53
SPEAKER_01: Show socks that because I have big calves, but I got one pair that I put in my duffel bag every time.
• 14:02
SPEAKER_01: And if if it's going bad, if I'm I will, and those are in a special place.
• 14:06
SPEAKER_01: They're not with my underwear and t-shirts.
• 14:09
  SPEAKER_01: I know where they're at.
• 14:10
  SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll unroll them socks.
• 14:12
  SPEAKER_05: Wow.
• 14:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, get them out, you know, and I got a lucky hat, and I put my knife and my little there's a bunch of stuff.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_01: But uh there was this, and I'm gonna tell you this, and this was and again, Toxie will accuse me of embellishing stories, but anyway, and I don't remember what it was, but it was I know it was a I think it was a writer's hunt, and it was not out west or it wasn't a great uh it was a southeast setting somewhere I had been before, and I'm not even gonna name the place, but anyway, we were all sitting around talking which they like to do.
• 14:45
SPEAKER_01: People love stories and all that.
• 14:47
SPEAKER_01: And somebody just this guy asked me out loud, cuz ain't you real superstitious?
• 14:52
  SPEAKER_01: What do you avoid?
• 14:54
SPEAKER_01: So we went to, I was telling the stories about this and what had happened before and why that happened and all that.
• 15:00
SPEAKER_01: And he said, Well, name some of them.
• 15:02
SPEAKER_01: So I was going over, you know, my my thoughts, hat on the bed.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_01: You can look all these up.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_01: Cross knife blades, cross-knife blades, howl in the daytime, black cats, all the normal stuff.
• 15:15
  SPEAKER_01: There's a there's a lot of them.
• 15:16
SPEAKER_01: I don't like the color yellow, it's got a lot of history.
• 15:19
  SPEAKER_05: Number 13.
• 15:20
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all that stuff.
• 15:21
SPEAKER_01: We was going over that.
• 15:23
SPEAKER_01: So this guy takes it upon himself to be Mr.
• 15:28
  SPEAKER_01: I Ain't Going down that path.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_01: And I was gonna take him hunting the next morning.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_01: He he did this after we had picked who's going with who where.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_01: And uh we picked this, it was pretty, it was a pretty fun hunt because they had this whole giant place sectioned off, and I had been around it a good bit and I was wanting a certain section and I got it.
• 15:49
SPEAKER_01: And then when they picked the guys, he got me.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_01: So anyway, I'm I'm you know, we're uh it's getting pretty close to bedtime.
• 15:56
SPEAKER_01: This guy calls me back to him and said, cuz come back here and let me show you something.
• 16:00
SPEAKER_01: And he had two or three hats on the bed.
• 16:03
  SPEAKER_04: Uh-uh.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_01: And the hat he wore in there, he had his camouflage hat and something barred somebody else's hat.
• 16:09
SPEAKER_01: He said, Check that out.
• 16:11
SPEAKER_01: He had taken duct tape of a silver piece of duct tape and taped the number thirteen lucky thirteen and put it on his gun stock.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_01: With a piece of duct tape and a magic mark or something like that.
• 16:26
  SPEAKER_05: Funny guy.
• 16:26
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 16:27
SPEAKER_01: And he took his partner and whoever, and his night and he had his knife blades opened and crossed, sitting on his little nightstand.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you still want to go with me?
• 16:37
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, you know, whatever.
• 16:40
  SPEAKER_01: Sure, hunt, knucklehead.
• 16:42
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, he just did everything he could.
• 16:45
SPEAKER_01: So uh anyway, we got the area I got was a cool place.
• 16:50
SPEAKER_01: It's it's it was plenty of room to move.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_01: Had a good listening point up on this high ridge.
• 16:55
SPEAKER_01: And as you're looking down in the bottom, kind of straight forward from your nose and to the left was a swamp.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_01: But it had high bl it had high ground in it.
• 17:06
SPEAKER_01: But depending on how much rain they had had, there was more water than and you'd have to wade through the water to get to the high.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_01: And there might be turkeys over there.
• 17:15
SPEAKER_01: And the right side from my nose to the right, it was like 300 acres of bottom down in there.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_01: Slightly elevation going up, it was just beautiful.
• 17:25
  SPEAKER_05: That sounds turkeyish.
• 17:27
SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was big time.
• 17:28
SPEAKER_01: And we we got there plenty early, and I'm standing on the ridge.
• 17:32
SPEAKER_01: And I had kind of forgotten about him acting like a jerk about all the you know, the lucky stuff, lucky thirteen on his gun.
• 17:40
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, and I was sitting there with my eyes closed, had them ears dialed in, and I was like, please gobble to the right, please gobble to the right.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_01: Nothing sat there for the longest time, finally sat down, and the bluff up there was kind of red dirt, and I had me a place where I could put my feet down and sit down.
• 17:57
  SPEAKER_01: I said, I ain't moving until I hear a turkey.
• 17:59
  SPEAKER_01: I don't care if it takes ten o'clock.
• 18:01
SPEAKER_01: Well, one gobbled, and then one answered him, and one answered him, and guess where they were?
• 18:07
  SPEAKER_05: To the left.
• 18:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they were in the swamp.
• 18:09
SPEAKER_01: So I'm looking at that guy, and he he's got rubber, brand new rubber boots.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_01: I don't remember what kind they were, but I said, Okay, I I hope you know how to walk quietly in the water.
• 18:20
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 18:20
SPEAKER_01: And he he made somebody, this ain't my first rodeo.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_01: And I said, Okay, because we ain't you know, it was still dark.
• 18:26
  SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
• 18:27
SPEAKER_01: So we go down the hill and we get we hit the water immediately.
• 18:31
SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, now we're gonna just shuffle our feet, not pick them up.
• 18:37
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know how far the turkeys were because I didn't hear them that good, but I knew they were in there, probably on the higher ground.
• 18:43
SPEAKER_01: So we're easing, and I don't know how this happened.
• 18:45
SPEAKER_01: I'm easing through there, easing through there, and I'm looking I'm looking down.
• 18:49
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 18:50
  SPEAKER_01: Snakes.
• 18:51
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 18:51
SPEAKER_01: It was plenty warming up for snakes, so I'm looking for snakes.
• 18:54
SPEAKER_01: And I I can hear the guy behind me, and we go maybe 80 yards, 100 yards.
• 18:59
  SPEAKER_01: He's doing pretty good.
• 19:01
SPEAKER_01: And then I hear him grunt and groan.
• 19:03
SPEAKER_01: Well, his right foot hit up some kind of stump hole or something.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_01: And he almost fell down.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_01: But his his right boot filled with water and he made all kinds of racket.
• 19:14
SPEAKER_01: And I and then immediately at my mind, I you should probably pull that number lucky 13 off your gun.
• 19:20
  SPEAKER_01: But I didn't say anything.
• 19:22
SPEAKER_01: So we kept going, we kept going, and I I can tell I'm pretty close to the turkeys.
• 19:28
SPEAKER_01: The third one that gobbled last, he had just gobbled, and I said, Oh, he's about 250 yards, I think, and I can see the land.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_01: So we're easing up there, easing up there.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_01: I said, if I can just get to anything, anything dry, we're gonna sit down right there.
• 19:42
  unknown: Yeah.
• 19:43
  SPEAKER_01: So we do.
• 19:44
SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm kind of got my left hand out.
• 19:46
SPEAKER_01: I got a camera over my shoulder, if I remember right, and putting my left hand out on this tree and that tree and that tree.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_01: And just as we're getting to the dry land, he's moved over.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_01: He's not behind me, he's gotten over to the right because he sees it too, and he thinks there's a little shortcut.
• 20:02
SPEAKER_01: Well, he goes over there and his foot grabs something under the water and he face just faceplants in the water.
• 20:09
SPEAKER_01: It's probably 55, 60 degrees in that water now, 70 something outside.
• 20:14
SPEAKER_01: But and buddy, he made a splash.
• 20:17
SPEAKER_01: It sounded like you dropped Moby Dick out of a helicopter.
• 20:20
  SPEAKER_01: It was loud.
• 20:22
SPEAKER_01: And uh anyway, so anyway, I dragged him up there, and now he's kind of shivering and all this kind of stuff.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_01: And it's his lucky 13's got swamp grass on it because he dropped that gun and all that.
• 20:33
SPEAKER_01: And I'm thinking to myself, yeah, you showed out last night.
• 20:37
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, we get up on the dry ground, and you know, the turkeys didn't gobble anymore after that.
• 20:41
  SPEAKER_01: It took forever.
• 20:43
SPEAKER_01: And uh, so we we move around a little bit and go forward.
• 20:47
SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm big on going straight at them.
• 20:50
  SPEAKER_01: Just depending anyway.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_01: Finally struck one about, I don't know, quarter to ten, nine thirty or so, one of them gobbling.
• 20:57
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Okay, I got a I got a bearing on that one.
• 20:59
  SPEAKER_01: Good.
• 20:59
SPEAKER_01: So we're moving through there, going slow, moving around this way, and the turkey's getting further away, so we're kind of chasing him.
• 21:06
SPEAKER_01: Didn't have on X and all that cell phone stuff back then, but I kind of know where we're headed, but it's it's it's a trick.
• 21:12
  SPEAKER_01: He's just on a move.
• 21:13
  SPEAKER_01: He's gobbling and moving.
• 21:15
SPEAKER_01: So we probably walk for an hour, move this way, sit down, call, move this way, sit down and call.
• 21:20
SPEAKER_01: And then I anyway, I said, Well, if he don't gobble this time, we're gonna head back to the truck.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_01: And uh anyway, nothing, nothing, nothing.
• 21:29
SPEAKER_01: I said, I think I know a shorter way out here, but it's kind of steep.
• 21:32
SPEAKER_01: So I'm wanting to get out of this swamp and go around to the east now and cut up and walk back to the truck.
• 21:37
SPEAKER_01: And and I at one point I look back, he's going real slow and he's walking like he's carrying a bowling ball between his butt cheeks, and he's done got swamp buddy.
• 21:48
SPEAKER_01: Swamp, it's cranky says swamp, but he is chafed.
• 21:52
SPEAKER_01: And I'm talking about bad chafed.
• 21:55
SPEAKER_01: And anyway, he made it back up to the truck, and I still ain't said nothing, and he's still.
• 22:00
  SPEAKER_01: Pretty chipper.
• 22:01
SPEAKER_01: He ain't brought up that he had, you know, threw all his hats on the bed.
• 22:04
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we didn't kill the turkey.
• 22:06
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Well, here's the deal.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_01: We're gonna go to the there's one truck stop down here.
• 22:09
SPEAKER_01: I said, We'll go get us something to eat.
• 22:11
SPEAKER_01: If you want to, I'll take you back to the camp, let you get some dry clothes.
• 22:15
SPEAKER_01: We're going back, Adam, but we're gonna come in from the other side.
• 22:18
  SPEAKER_01: I'm good, I'm good.
• 22:20
SPEAKER_01: He ain't so we go to this truck side and we go in and and they got you know food, but it ain't like you go into a really good sprint mart or something now, and they got all this stuff laid out.
• 22:30
SPEAKER_01: It was one big glass box with a red light.
• 22:33
SPEAKER_01: Like you like you'd put popcorn in.
• 22:36
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 22:36
SPEAKER_01: And they had some chicken in it.
• 22:38
SPEAKER_01: And they had some corn dogs and something else.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_01: And I'm looking at that chicken, and uh, I was like, I'm pretty sure that's yesterday's chicken.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_01: It had it had a little bit of a green tint on it.
• 22:50
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, You gonna get you some chicken?
• 22:53
SPEAKER_01: I said, No, I'm gonna pass on that.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_01: Wow, wow, is chicken bad luck?
• 22:59
  SPEAKER_01: And I'm thinking, no, it's green.
• 23:02
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, he just shook his head, he ate that chicken and all that.
• 23:06
SPEAKER_01: I think I got me some hoop cheese and something else.
• 23:09
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I didn't get nothing out of the hot box.
• 23:12
SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, other than with Sammy Knight out in Texas one time, this is the fastest I've ever seen this take place.
• 23:18
SPEAKER_01: He ate all that chicken.
• 23:20
SPEAKER_01: We went by and got him some crest cloak, fresh clothes, and all that stuff, and I'm sure he changed underwear, maybe got him a little gold bond or something.
• 23:27
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, about 2 30, we're sitting back at the truck, and I'm just kind of killing time because we're gonna come in from the south this time.
• 23:35
SPEAKER_01: And he gets outside and opens the door and he starts throwing up.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about he's calling Ralph, and Ralph could hear him if he was in Atlanta.
• 23:45
SPEAKER_01: He's just one of the he got to, I'm assuming it was the worst case of food poisoning I ever seen.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, and I'm thinking, I should have said it, but I didn't think, and I said, Oh, that superstition stuff ain't so damn funny now, is it?
• 24:00
  SPEAKER_01: Lucky 13.
• 24:01
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, it's uh that's uh that's one I remember is like, hey, don't mess with that kind of stuff.
• 24:07
  SPEAKER_05: Don't tempt fate.
• 24:08
  SPEAKER_01: Don't tempt fate.
• 24:10
SPEAKER_01: So thou shalt not name turkeys.
• 24:13
SPEAKER_01: We didn't have any of those turkeys named, but I call that area Lucky 13, now I hope I get to go back over there one day.
• 24:19
SPEAKER_01: But holy cow, don't like you say, don't tempt fate.

• 25:03
SPEAKER_01: I can send him a waypoint on Onex.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_01: Or the gobbler was, maybe where he was gobbling or where he went.
• 25:10
SPEAKER_01: Something you can hold over his head when you need help.
• 25:13
SPEAKER_01: Fixing your truck, working on your house project, or maybe you want to know where the crappie or pipe.

SPEAKER_05: The official podcast of Monte Oak Properties.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_01: Hey, if you don't laugh out loud, we'll give you your money back.
• 26:07
  SPEAKER_01: Let's see where we're at.
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_01: Number eight.
• 26:10
SPEAKER_01: Number eight in the Ten Commandments is thou shalt not hold grudges.
• 26:15
SPEAKER_05: Thou shalt not hold grudges.
• 26:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's a and that's all about attitude.
• 26:21
  SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
• 26:22
SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, if uh if you get whipped one day, just like I did up there, the turkey came in, you know, flew across, got in the woods instead of walking straight to us and got, you know, just he just outdid me.
• 26:36
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 26:36
SPEAKER_01: And I I should have, maybe I should have called one time to see if he would have gobbled it in the woods, could get everybody turned, but just you walk off going, that was his day.
• 26:45
  SPEAKER_01: Don't don't get mad about it.
• 26:47
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 26:47
  SPEAKER_01: And kick rocks.
• 26:48
SPEAKER_01: How many times have you walked behind me and I've been kicking rocks?
• 26:51
SPEAKER_01: It's like uh you know, it it's like if somebody misses a turkey.
• 26:57
SPEAKER_01: And that's a tough call right there, because it may be somebody that don't get to hunt much and they didn't kill one in three or four years.
• 27:04
  SPEAKER_05: Nervous.
• 27:05
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you gotta calm them down.
• 27:06
  SPEAKER_01: It's like Mr.
• 27:07
SPEAKER_01: Fox said, Hey, you'll forget about that in about 20 years.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_01: And uh I Ben Lee, he had the best attitude.
• 27:19
  SPEAKER_01: Ben Rogers Lee.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_01: If y'all don't know him, Google him.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm sure the people listening to this podcast know who Ben Lee was, but uh I got to hunt with him one morning with uh anyway, and it was a short hunt and all that.
• 27:32
SPEAKER_01: But I got to I listened to one of his seminars, and back then everybody did seminars, but I forgot that where this one was, but it was a big show, and there was a pretty big crowd in there.
• 27:42
SPEAKER_01: He was doing his calling demonstrations and all that.
• 27:44
SPEAKER_01: And this guy went into this long detailed story about how his misery had multiplied by he only had this one place and it was about a hundred acres, had a big pasture in the middle, and the turkeys would fly in the middle of the pasture, and he said, before the season opened, this and they had 31 hens with him, and you know, 10 days later he had 26.
• 28:05
SPEAKER_01: He said, I was there glassing them every day, you couldn't call.
• 28:07
SPEAKER_01: I there was nothing in the middle, it was flat.
• 28:10
SPEAKER_01: And he was just talking about all these hens, all these hens, and his question was gonna be, what can I do, you know, to kill this turkey and all this.
• 28:19
SPEAKER_01: And he was explaining he still, you know, a week left in the season, he still had 11.
• 28:24
SPEAKER_01: Some of them, I'm sure, were going to nest and all that kind of stuff.
• 28:27
SPEAKER_01: And he finally asked Ben Lee, now what would you do?
• 28:29
SPEAKER_01: And he just laughed out loud.
• 28:31
SPEAKER_01: He said, I'd find another turkey to hunt.
• 28:33
  SPEAKER_01: I was like, that's what I'm talking about.
• 28:36
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 28:36
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, and look, the uh I got I'm gonna show you about this.
• 28:42
SPEAKER_01: Is the best attitude story I got.
• 28:44
SPEAKER_01: And it was a uh a ride, it was a hunt for uh outdoor riders, and we did it in conjunction, and I think it was with a gun company, and it was in uh Kansas.
• 28:57
SPEAKER_01: And this guy had put this hunt together.
• 28:59
SPEAKER_01: I had taken him on two or three, he was a young PR guy, and he I'd kind of helped train him a little bit, but he found him, he's gonna put on his own hunt.
• 29:06
SPEAKER_01: And we won't know would Mossyoke take place and all that kind of stuff.
• 29:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I mean that's Rios and Yeah.
• 29:12
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so anyway, it again we didn't have drop pens and all that.
• 29:16
SPEAKER_01: You had a road atlas and handwritten notes, but I found the place and I'm gonna come in there a day or two early like I always do, see if I can get me some MRI.
• 29:26
SPEAKER_01: He's got like six writers coming in, that seemed to be the magic number back in.
• 29:30
SPEAKER_01: And anyway, it was uh it was really a beautiful place.
• 29:35
SPEAKER_01: It was the the gate you turned in was huge and it was a manicured driveway to this beautiful lodge and they had a little cabin.
• 29:43
SPEAKER_01: I was like, holy cow, these digs are way better than anything I've been providing.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, uh nobody was there yet.
• 29:51
SPEAKER_01: He was in town doing something else, so I just kind of, you know, I didn't even know where I was gonna sleep anything.
• 29:55
  SPEAKER_01: I just had everything.
• 29:56
SPEAKER_01: I dropped the tailgate and I keep seeing this guy on the tractor go by and he's mowing something down there, and finally he turned his mower off whom I'm all over.
• 30:04
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 30:05
  SPEAKER_01: Introduced myself, yeah.
• 30:06
SPEAKER_01: I know who you are.
• 30:08
SPEAKER_01: And I got all the skinny I needed on the place.
• 30:11
SPEAKER_01: It was like a quail hunting spot.
• 30:13
  SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
• 30:14
SPEAKER_01: And uh I said, You got a lot of turkeys?
• 30:17
  SPEAKER_01: And no, not really.
• 30:18
  SPEAKER_04: Uh-uh.
• 30:19
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, There, you know, every once in a while, you know, you'll see him down at the so-and-so, and I've seen some down there, but I'm like, hmm, this ain't this ain't good.
• 30:28
  SPEAKER_01: And it's only about 800 acres.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_01: And there's some pretty woods on it, but this guy wouldn't know if you had a bunch of he would know.
• 30:36
SPEAKER_01: So I immediately get out, and I think at the time I might have had a flip phone or something.
• 30:40
  SPEAKER_01: Well, I got a buddy that's 50 minutes from there.
• 30:43
SPEAKER_01: And I called him, tell him what's going on.
• 30:45
SPEAKER_01: Hey I may need to bring a couple guys.
• 30:47
  SPEAKER_01: Come on.
• 30:48
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 30:48
SPEAKER_01: This guy was a deer nut.
• 30:50
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 30:51
SPEAKER_01: He didn't think he didn't, he thought the only thing he thought about was giant antlers.
• 30:56
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 30:56
SPEAKER_01: But his place had turkeys on it.
• 30:58
SPEAKER_01: And I and I knew it well.
• 30:59
SPEAKER_01: I've been up there with him.
• 31:00
SPEAKER_01: So anyway, we're getting everything together, and that night's a big supper, and the other five guides are there, and I don't know any of them.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_01: They're kind of locals, but one of them, when they were introducing everybody, this guy had won this contest and he'd won that contest, and he'd placed in the third and owl hooting, and he he had his chest stuck out real big.
• 31:19
SPEAKER_01: And uh so anyway, I called a guy over.
• 31:22
SPEAKER_01: I said, now when you tell me who I gotta hunt, I need to look him up because I'm I'm I'm gonna go to another spot, really.
• 31:29
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Yeah, I got a really good spot, I think.
• 31:31
SPEAKER_01: It's like 55 minutes from here and I'll load him up some more dirt.
• 31:34
SPEAKER_01: And he was the host guy, PR, he was good with it.
• 31:37
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 31:38
SPEAKER_01: So anyway, I got my guy and who I was gonna hunt, and I told him, I said, Nah, you you need to be up and ready to go no later than 4 30.
• 31:49
SPEAKER_01: And this super guy standing over there and he's like, That's kind of early, and he chuckled and I said, Well, we're going down the road a bit.
• 31:57
SPEAKER_01: And he just looked at me like that.
• 31:59
SPEAKER_01: You know, I was like, none of your business.
• 32:02
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, so my guy's up and ready to go, boom, we go up there, kills one right out of the gate, right off the roost.
• 32:09
SPEAKER_01: And I heard like five more way down in this pasture, and my buddies, he, you know, he meets me out at the gate and he's like, and I heard three down there by the pond, and blah, blah, blah.
• 32:18
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Okay.
• 32:19
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Can I bring some?
• 32:20
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 32:21
SPEAKER_01: He cares zero about so we get back.
• 32:24
SPEAKER_01: By the time we get back, they're just now coming in.
• 32:27
SPEAKER_01: We we were back by like nine o'clock.
• 32:30
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, everybody's got the muddy grubs, and we pull up there, nobody had heard a turkey, and one guy thought they saw one, blah, blah, blah.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_01: And super guy's over there, and I dropped the tailgate, and there's this big old gobbler in there, and everybody's coming over looking, so now they're off taking pictures, and the super guy is just looking at me.
• 32:50
SPEAKER_01: And in the beginning, I was like, I'll probably take somebody in the beginning.
• 32:54
SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'll probably take him up there because he's a good caller and all that.
• 32:58
SPEAKER_01: But he just he looked at me like I had stepped on his dog's tail.
• 33:02
SPEAKER_01: He was like very hateful.
• 33:05
SPEAKER_01: So I told the guy, I said, Look, I'm gonna go back up there this afternoon, pick one of the other riders you want.
• 33:10
SPEAKER_01: So we went back up there with another guy, and I I let him out where we were, drew some stuff on my little notepad, go around this way, boom, boom, both of us killed a turkey that afternoon.
• 33:21
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 33:21
SPEAKER_01: So we get back, and super guide's there, and he's done dropped his tailgate, and he's sitting on his tailgate wheeling on something.
• 33:29
SPEAKER_01: I think he was working on a striker or something.
• 33:31
SPEAKER_01: We dropped that tailgate two more turkeys, and everybody's over there.
• 33:34
SPEAKER_01: And he walked, he he walks up over there and looks at the turkeys and like rolls one over, looks at the spurs, and just lets it go and walks off.
• 33:44
  SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, that's that's not a that's not a good attitude.
• 33:48
  SPEAKER_05: No, not at all.
• 33:50
SPEAKER_01: Bottom line is I got to take every I took everybody but his person up there, because we had three or four days, and everybody got him a turkey up there except Super Guy and his rider.
• 34:01
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 34:01
SPEAKER_01: And hadn't he been such a jerk, right?
• 34:04
SPEAKER_01: I would have taken him first.
• 34:05
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 34:06
SPEAKER_01: But you know, when I got back and I had a turkey and it, you know, it was all about the dirt, it wasn't about me.
• 34:11
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 34:12
SPEAKER_01: But he he he held that grudge, and I'm like, okay, I'm about to teach you a lesson.
• 34:17
SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't about me, it wasn't about any, it was about, man, them turkeys up there on that deer place, they just don't get hunted.
• 34:24
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 34:24
SPEAKER_01: It ain't rocket science, but my my point being, don't hold grudges.
• 34:30
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 34:31
SPEAKER_01: You know, we just celebrated last week Bob Dixon's birthday.
• 34:35
  SPEAKER_01: His heavenly birthday.
• 34:37
SPEAKER_01: And and Toxie says all the time, he said, Man, you and Bob were the best.
• 34:42
SPEAKER_01: And Bob was as good at it as anybody ever seen about manipulating the landowner and getting it.
• 34:48
SPEAKER_01: Charming on there's a way to do that and a way not.
• 34:52
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 34:52
SPEAKER_01: What made Bob so impressive was I did it, I always had that video camera.
• 34:57
SPEAKER_01: And back then nobody was doing that.
• 34:59
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 34:59
SPEAKER_01: And I would tell them, look, if we get any footage, I'll come up here and show it to you, and blah blah blah.
• 35:03
SPEAKER_01: And so I had that camera as a kind of a warm-up device.
• 35:07
SPEAKER_05: Kind of got your foot in the door with it.
• 35:09
SPEAKER_01: Oh man, it was priceless.
• 35:12
SPEAKER_01: And Bob didn't need that.
• 35:13
  unknown: Right.
• 35:14
SPEAKER_01: He could charm anybody into anything.
• 35:16
SPEAKER_01: And it was like, now to me, you're talking about, you know, how good you call, and this guy's on the internet or Facebook or whatever, and he's got a million followers, and he can do this and he can do that.
• 35:29
SPEAKER_01: Here's the deal with that.
• 35:30
SPEAKER_01: You can you can you can win the world championship six times in a row.
• 35:35
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 35:36
SPEAKER_01: When you get in the woods, you're a hen.
• 35:40
  SPEAKER_01: And they're everywhere.
• 35:41
  SPEAKER_01: You're not special.
• 35:43
  SPEAKER_01: You're not special.
• 35:44
  SPEAKER_01: I don't care who you are.
• 35:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, does it sound good?
• 35:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe you can locate one a little better, but if you got what Bob Dixon had, you your bar's way up there.
• 35:55
SPEAKER_05: That just expanded all your dirt, all your turkeys, everything you have access to.
• 36:00
SPEAKER_05: If you don't have access to them, if there's no turkeys to hear your calling, it don't matter how good your calling is.
• 36:07
  SPEAKER_01: Ditto.
• 36:08
  SPEAKER_01: Light bulb moment.
• 36:10
SPEAKER_01: Bob Dixon was the best at it.
• 36:12
SPEAKER_01: Look, I've been around so many, it's crazy.
• 36:14
SPEAKER_01: I've been around some really good ones.
• 36:16
SPEAKER_01: Hollywood was as good at it with anybody.
• 36:19
SPEAKER_01: He did it without a camera or anything.
• 36:21
SPEAKER_01: So if you really like it that much and you really want to get on them good places, uh just go back and look how Bob Dixon does it.
• 36:29
  SPEAKER_01: Watch them videos.
• 36:30
SPEAKER_01: He was always taking care of people.
• 36:31
SPEAKER_01: He was always entertaining people.
• 36:33
SPEAKER_01: Everybody wanted to be around him, and that's gonna open up some doors.
• 36:37
SPEAKER_01: So, you know, the camera or my my ticket was I would always find out if they had kids.
• 36:43
  SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
• 36:44
SPEAKER_01: You know, and I was like, I'll video you can't.
• 36:46
SPEAKER_01: Well, next thing you know, I'm getting the key to the gate.
• 36:48
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 36:48
SPEAKER_01: Hey, can I go on that?
• 36:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure, cuz you can do whatever you want.
• 36:52
SPEAKER_05: You got a little Timmy with you.
• 36:53
SPEAKER_05: You can go anywhere you want.
• 36:54
SPEAKER_01: So anyway, number eight, thou shalt not hold grudges, which is all about attitude.
• 36:59
SPEAKER_01: Up to this point, there's been eight, right?
• 37:01
SPEAKER_05: We're up to number eight.
• 37:03
SPEAKER_01: Number eight, all of them.
• 37:04
SPEAKER_01: No, we're up to number nine.
• 37:05
SPEAKER_05: We just did number eight.
• 37:06
SPEAKER_01: We just didn't, and they've all been thou shalt not.
• 37:09
  SPEAKER_05: That's right.
• 37:09
SPEAKER_01: We're fixing the move to thou shalls.
• 37:11
  SPEAKER_05: We got two to-do's.
• 37:12
SPEAKER_01: We got two thou shalls, and one of them, and uh is is thou shall share your vocation.
• 37:20
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 37:21
SPEAKER_01: And uh that you know, that's kind of hard to do.
• 37:24
SPEAKER_01: And yes, we're talking about turkey hunting, but that goes way beyond turkey hunting, deer hunting, trapping, all that kind of stuff.
• 37:31
SPEAKER_01: And the reason it's it's poor it's important to share your vocation is because it's hard to learn any kind of hunting, trapping, shooting, all that stuff.
• 37:42
SPEAKER_01: You know, it's not like golf.
• 37:44
SPEAKER_01: You can't go to the country club and get a lesson 30 minutes for$30.
• 37:47
SPEAKER_01: You kind of got to have a mentor.
• 37:49
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 37:49
SPEAKER_01: And I heard somebody ranting on Facebook the other day, there's too many turkey hunters, ain't enough turkeys to go around.
• 37:55
  SPEAKER_01: I get all that.
• 37:56
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 37:56
SPEAKER_01: But if you got somebody that's really special and you want to share a gift, then you should do that.
• 38:01
SPEAKER_01: And I wrote a chapter, I don't even know which book it's in, but I did three books.
• 38:05
SPEAKER_01: And there was a chapter called God Bless the Neophytes.
• 38:10
SPEAKER_01: And a neophyte is a beginner, whatever.
• 38:12
  SPEAKER_01: I was a rookie.
• 38:14
  SPEAKER_01: A rookie, yeah.
• 38:14
SPEAKER_01: I looked that word up.
• 38:15
SPEAKER_01: I wanted everybody to think I knew what I was talking about.
• 38:17
SPEAKER_01: So I used the word neophyte.
• 38:19
SPEAKER_01: But the thing about this is, and Lauren reminds me of this, and all y'all do too all the time, people love stories.
• 38:26
  unknown: Right.
• 38:26
SPEAKER_01: The best stories in the world are from beginners.
• 38:31
SPEAKER_01: The best questions, the best laughs, all that kind of stuff.
• 38:34
SPEAKER_01: And looked for me personally, it's always more fun when I go with somebody that's not a seasoned veteran, yeah.
• 38:44
  SPEAKER_01: Turkey hunter.
• 38:44
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 38:45
SPEAKER_01: Those those those hunts are you know, they're entertaining and all that, but they're always a little stressful.
• 38:51
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 38:51
  SPEAKER_01: When you're with a pro.
• 38:52
  SPEAKER_05: A little more pressure.
• 38:54
SPEAKER_01: Because you, you know, maybe you come into their place or you they're coming to your place and you get there, it's like, uh, who's what?
• 39:01
SPEAKER_01: You want an owl, you want me to, you know, it's and when you go somebody that's just a sponge, it's so much fun because they don't know if you're right or not, but you have your everybody's got their own methods.
• 39:12
SPEAKER_01: And uh, so it's fun to share that kind of stuff.
• 39:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can remember we were having a hunt, and I think this was this is not writers, it was probably industry people, but PR people, whatever it was.
• 39:24
SPEAKER_01: And uh I had a guy, he was just so so excited, and we we talked about this and that and this and that, and he uh and come to find out this guy was like he had a degree in literature and all that kind of stuff.
• 39:40
SPEAKER_01: He wrote press releases for all these companies.
• 39:43
SPEAKER_01: And again, back then we didn't have social media and all that.
• 39:46
SPEAKER_01: This guy was a really smart guy that could edit, copy, and all that.
• 39:50
SPEAKER_01: He worked for a big company, but anyway, we were he was going to urge it and he was thrilled.
• 39:55
SPEAKER_01: And then uh I said, Here's the gun we're gonna be using and all this kind of stuff.
• 39:59
SPEAKER_01: And uh he he looked at me and like, Where'd the shells go?
• 40:03
SPEAKER_01: Oh I'm like in my pocket.
• 40:07
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_01: You just put 'em in my pocket.
• 40:09
SPEAKER_01: I I use that all the time.
• 40:11
SPEAKER_01: I had two guys come down, I was taking two guys, and these guys were they were pretty good hunters.
• 40:16
SPEAKER_01: And we I was at Bent Creek, I'll never forget this one.
• 40:20
SPEAKER_01: And we man, they were so excited.
• 40:21
SPEAKER_01: Back then they had all the VHS tapes, and we watched some of the truth and some of Mark Drury and all this stuff.
• 40:27
SPEAKER_01: And they and we go, they asked me nine million questions, and they were just excited as they could be.
• 40:34
SPEAKER_01: And we talked and I'd lean back up against the wall, and this is how you sit, pull your knee up, have you have you and make them hold the guns.
• 40:42
SPEAKER_01: I got I can do that forever.
• 40:43
SPEAKER_01: You they were just so fired up.
• 40:46
SPEAKER_01: Got up the next morning way before everybody.
• 40:48
SPEAKER_01: They already in the the kitchen area down there drinking coffee.
• 40:52
  SPEAKER_04: Oh.
• 40:53
SPEAKER_01: First ones up, fired up, dressed, heading it around her neck, everything ready to go.
• 40:58
SPEAKER_01: So we go down there into our listening spot and pull out there and walk out on that big power line.
• 41:03
SPEAKER_01: I said, now y'all gotta be quiet.
• 41:04
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we know.
• 41:05
SPEAKER_01: And we're staying there, and I let out a big long owl who one of them grabbed me by the shoulder after our owl, he said, because I thought we was hunting turkeys.
• 41:13
SPEAKER_01: And I said, We I didn't go about the locate and stuff.
• 41:16
SPEAKER_01: He was scared to death.
• 41:18
SPEAKER_01: I said, Well, when we get this owl killed, we're gonna we're gonna go hunt turkeys then, but they eat a lot better.
• 41:23
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we're uh and I had a just funny stuff.
• 41:28
SPEAKER_01: I had a guy up now, he was from Mossburg, and he hadn't turkey hunted Harley, he'd been to Africa and all that, but anyway, we ended up in the Dean Swamp, and he was a big guy and didn't walk very quiet or anything, and we had I mean it was a great hunt.
• 41:43
SPEAKER_01: We just kept going deeper and deeper and deeper into the Dean Swamp.
• 41:47
SPEAKER_01: And at one point, I mean it's getting late.
• 41:50
SPEAKER_01: It's about eleven o'clock, and there's one goblin to my right, every once in a while, one goblin behind us, one gobble back toward the truck and all that.
• 41:58
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, You about ready to go?
• 42:01
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Dude, we can't go nowhere.
• 42:04
  SPEAKER_01: Why?
• 42:04
  SPEAKER_01: I said, We're pinned down.
• 42:07
SPEAKER_01: And he didn't and he thought about it for a minute.
• 42:09
  SPEAKER_01: He said, I got a 12 gauge with three-inch magnum and they're turkeys.
• 42:13
SPEAKER_01: What do you mean we're pinned down?
• 42:15
SPEAKER_01: I was like, Well, they're gonna see us if we get up and move, and he didn't care, so we got up and moved, but it's like we're pinned down.
• 42:23
  SPEAKER_01: And uh it's uh it's just it's funny.
• 42:26
  SPEAKER_04: It is funny.
• 42:27
  SPEAKER_01: It's funny.
• 42:28
  SPEAKER_01: You get great info.
• 42:29
SPEAKER_01: This ain't got nothing to do with the neophyte, although I think this guy was, but you remember Justin Flaherty.
• 42:34
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 42:34
SPEAKER_01: It worked for one of my favorite guys.
• 42:36
SPEAKER_01: He ran a camera for us a while.
• 42:37
SPEAKER_01: He he runs the whole country club thing up in Tupole now, but he was he was always a cat.
• 42:43
SPEAKER_01: And we were in Florida, and I think he got he got sick.
• 42:48
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it was food porn or something, but I could tell he was dehydrated.
• 42:52
SPEAKER_01: I'm smart enough to know that.
• 42:53
SPEAKER_01: So I took him to a and I it they didn't have urgent cares back then.
• 42:57
SPEAKER_01: It was a tiny little hospital out in the middle of nowhere that had an emergency room, and the emergency room was just a sign that had like a red cross on it with an arrow pointing to it.
• 43:07
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so I I I know he needs some fluids and he needs something because he just can't quit throwing up so we I I roll up in there and tell him what's going on, and this country nurse is we'll take care of him, honey.
• 43:19
SPEAKER_01: Come on, and she had his arm around.
• 43:21
SPEAKER_01: So I'm sitting out there in the I guess it was a waiting room, you know, plastic vinyl chairs.
• 43:26
SPEAKER_01: It looked like a hospital out of the 60s.
• 43:28
SPEAKER_01: And there was a guy sitting over there and he just kept staring at me, kept staring at me, kept staring at me, and and finally, you know, I I I got up and moved, went and got a magazine.
• 43:38
SPEAKER_01: When I came back, he had moved like two seats down.
• 43:42
SPEAKER_01: He said, You that guy?
• 43:43
SPEAKER_01: And I said, I I don't know what guy you want talking about, that turkey guy.
• 43:48
  SPEAKER_01: I said, Oh yeah.
• 43:49
SPEAKER_01: Then I knew he had seen some videos or something.
• 43:52
SPEAKER_01: He said, You know, I killed them all.
• 43:55
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, You mean all the turkeys around here?
• 43:58
SPEAKER_01: Is that why we're not hearing them?
• 44:00
SPEAKER_01: No, I mean I got all the all the types and I said, Really? 'Cause he wasn't that old.
• 44:05
SPEAKER_01: He's probably twenty, maybe twenty-one, rough looking guy.
• 44:10
SPEAKER_01: Had a mullet and all that kind of stuff.
• 44:14
SPEAKER_01: And he was telling me about all of them.
• 44:16
SPEAKER_01: He said, Yeah, I got my he said, I got my western out there in Oklahoma.
• 44:21
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 44:22
  SPEAKER_01: And I'm thinking, Western?
• 44:23
  SPEAKER_01: What's a wes turkey?
• 44:24
SPEAKER_01: He said my brother worked on the oil patch out there and he found and I went out there.
• 44:27
  SPEAKER_01: That's where I got my western.
• 44:29
  SPEAKER_05: Okay.
• 44:29
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said I I got my normal turkey up there in Alabama.
• 44:34
  SPEAKER_05: I'm assuming that's the eastern turkey.
• 44:36
  SPEAKER_05: Let's hope so.
• 44:37
  SPEAKER_05: The normal one.
• 44:38
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 44:39
SPEAKER_01: And uh and he said, you know, I live down here, so I got my seminole down there by Lake City.
• 44:45
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 44:45
SPEAKER_01: So now we got the Seminole, the Western, and the North Normal.
• 44:50
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, My meridian took the longest.
• 44:53
SPEAKER_01: I've always I always used that term.
• 44:55
SPEAKER_01: I said, You were gonna and uh he said that took a long time.
• 44:59
SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, Finally, my brother got transferred somewhere up there in northern Colorado, and they had them meridians out there, and I got one, but I got all of them.
• 45:06
SPEAKER_01: I was like, good for you.
• 45:08
  SPEAKER_01: So anyway.
• 45:09
SPEAKER_01: Congrats, uh don't be scared to share your vocation and uh take a neophyte.
• 45:16
  SPEAKER_01: All right, last one.
• 45:18
SPEAKER_01: I know y'all probably tired of hearing about this, but anyway, I was I was I was kind of semi-forced to do the Ten Commandments.
• 45:25
SPEAKER_01: The last one is Thou shalt always be grateful.
• 45:29
SPEAKER_01: And I wrote some notes down about this one, and and and you know, one thing I enjoy watching is people that get it.
• 45:37
  SPEAKER_01: It's like Dave Owens.
• 45:39
SPEAKER_01: I I bring him up all the time.
• 45:41
SPEAKER_01: And and you know, you'll catch him, he'll be like he's got a he posted some videos this year and he was hunting somewhere on Easter, so he had his own little service.
• 45:49
  SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
• 45:50
SPEAKER_01: And he filmed it, and he's always saying little prayers and stuff like that.
• 45:53
  SPEAKER_01: It's like be grateful.
• 45:55
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 45:56
SPEAKER_01: Uh the other day I had a guy uh you know, had a a crappy hunt, and he had to leave and go back to work, and I and I stopped and he had he didn't even have but like an hour that morning.
• 46:07
SPEAKER_01: And we stopped and you could see that orange glow of sun way down this hill coming up behind the pines.
• 46:12
SPEAKER_01: I said, Look at that.
• 46:13
  SPEAKER_01: Amen.
• 46:14
SPEAKER_01: And not not many people got to see that this morning.
• 46:16
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 46:17
SPEAKER_01: Always be grateful, slow down and take it all in, because the cool stuff happens in the spring to me.
• 46:23
SPEAKER_01: And look, I love the bow hunt, I love all that stuff.
• 46:26
SPEAKER_01: But the woods are just different.
• 46:28
SPEAKER_01: Big time's different in the k in in the in the springtime.
• 46:31
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 46:32
SPEAKER_01: And so don't get caught up on I gotta fill all my tags.
• 46:36
  SPEAKER_01: Don't keep score.
• 46:37
SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna keep score on something, just like hey, that was a good day.
• 46:42
SPEAKER_01: I was up and about.
• 46:44
SPEAKER_01: I was able to walk down there and listen.
• 46:46
  SPEAKER_01: I can still hear.
• 46:48
SPEAKER_01: And you know, I g I got that mindset a long time ago.
• 46:51
SPEAKER_01: Your mom's been to a lot now, I know what a truly blessed day is, but you spend time with like the wounded vets and stuff, and one of them his whole right side was messed up, and I was like, Can we go a hundred yards?
• 47:02
SPEAKER_01: And his little boy said, I ought to carry.
• 47:04
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 47:06
SPEAKER_01: That right that right there.
• 47:08
SPEAKER_01: That's being grateful right there.
• 47:11
SPEAKER_01: Uh here's another thing you should do is is being grateful.
• 47:16
SPEAKER_01: You should arm yourself with some good facts.
• 47:19
SPEAKER_01: Back when we had the show on the Goth Channel, uh, and you know, we had a show called Second Season, and man, we got to take we took Jack Nicholas and Fuzzy Zeller and Davis Love and all then.
• 47:30
SPEAKER_01: And before we started doing it, that's a different level of celebrity than we've been used to.
• 47:34
SPEAKER_01: I I printed out some facts about Pittman Robertson and NWTF trapping and relocating all this stuff, and I was like, Now if we show this on TV, you're gonna probably get, you know, asked some here's some positive facts, you know, about what turkeys were like in the 60s and what they're like now.
• 47:50
SPEAKER_01: And just arm yourself so you can have a good conversation because at some point somebody's gonna say, Oh, I can't believe you hunt.
• 47:58
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 47:58
SPEAKER_01: You should you should be able to defend that in a very polite way that makes them look like an idiot because there's chances are they may be an idiot.
• 48:06
SPEAKER_01: And uh and when it comes to wildlife conservation and stuff, so arm yourself with some ta some facts that uh that mean something to somebody.
• 48:16
  SPEAKER_01: Seek out one person.
• 48:18
SPEAKER_01: Seek out one person that you know is could be a buddy, somebody you've known from high school, whatever else that you know deep down that would be a life-changing experience. 'Cause to us it's just a turkey hunt.
• 48:32
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 48:32
SPEAKER_01: You know, we'll go listen, maybe we had a hunt, maybe we didn't, shoot a text, whatever.
• 48:37
SPEAKER_01: And we kind of take it for granted.
• 48:38
SPEAKER_01: It's turkey season, that's what we do.
• 48:41
SPEAKER_01: Look, I've been with so many people and I've seen it firsthand that that was a life-changing experience.
• 48:48
SPEAKER_01: Now they know how to do it.
• 48:50
SPEAKER_01: They now they're just all about it.
• 48:52
  SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna find me a place.
• 48:54
SPEAKER_01: They're looking at turkey calls, they're sending texts.
• 48:56
  SPEAKER_01: What about this?
• 48:57
SPEAKER_01: It can be a life changing experience for somebody.
• 49:00
SPEAKER_01: And if you don't want to introduce anybody to it, so be it.
• 49:02
SPEAKER_01: I personally don't have an issue with more turkey hunters.
• 49:06
SPEAKER_01: I you know, I had a couple issues in Florida, like, man, there wouldn't it it used to be anybody down there.
• 49:12
  SPEAKER_01: Oh well.
• 49:12
  SPEAKER_05: Oh well.
• 49:13
SPEAKER_01: I hope they're having as much fun as I am.
• 49:16
SPEAKER_01: They want in the club, let 'em in.
• 49:19
  SPEAKER_05: There's room for everybody.
• 49:21
SPEAKER_01: Let them in the club.
• 49:22
SPEAKER_01: Uh thank God for each day, because I'm telling you, I've seen people go on turkey hunts and it was a monumental effort to get 'em in.
• 49:31
SPEAKER_01: Get 'em out, get 'em quiet.
• 49:33
SPEAKER_01: People who are not as physically able as you, you don't know what they're going through.
• 49:38
SPEAKER_01: And every day you get to do that.
• 49:41
SPEAKER_01: Especially if you're good at it and you're going and you're going, you got plenty of dirt and all that kind of stuff.
• 49:46
SPEAKER_01: It's like you just kinda take it for granted and get used to it.
• 49:50
SPEAKER_01: Thank God for every single day.
• 49:52
SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, kids today are hungry for that.
• 49:56
SPEAKER_01: I don't care how much phone time they got, I don't care what they do or what you think about 'em, kids are hungry about it.
• 50:03
SPEAKER_01: Uh I was reminded about that on the Florida hunt with uh my my last hunter.
• 50:08
SPEAKER_01: Brought his 19 year old son.
• 50:10

• 50:43
SPEAKER_01: People are fascinated by what you do.
• 50:46
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 50:46
SPEAKER_01: And don't ever think that.
• 50:47
SPEAKER_01: So arm yourself with some facts and don't just roll your eyes and when uh you say, Oh, so and so wants to go turkey hunting.
• 50:54
SPEAKER_01: I'm telling you, seek somebody out that you know is a great person that would just freak out.
