- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Thursday and it's the
- 0:15very last day of July, the 31st of July, and you have decided on
- 0:20this auspicious last day of the month to press play and invite
- 0:24me into your day. Thanks for that.
- 0:26I appreciate your company. Excuse me?
- 0:28Clearing my throat. And today's Bible reading might
- 0:32seem a little bit familiar, as this echoes other parts of our
- 0:35lives. Like our trainer that says if
- 0:38you eat rubbish and don't exercise, you'll end up looking
- 0:41like that, and if you eat the right things and exercise,
- 0:44you'll end up looking like this. Or your tutor that says if you
- 0:48don't memorise your Greek, you'll end up struggling like
- 0:51this. But if you get on top of this
- 0:52early, you'll end up nailing it. This is God speaking to his
- 0:57people, saying if you do this, you will be blessed in this way,
- 1:02and if you do the wrong thing like these things, you'll be
- 1:06cursed in this way. So it's God setting up some
- 1:09clear expectations and some clear consequences for obeying
- 1:14and disobeying nice and early in the peace as His people are
- 1:18about to head into their promised land to begin their new
- 1:21life. So the blessings and curses that
- 1:25await them is what our Bible reading is all about.
- 1:28Let's do it. Let's read together Deuteronomy
- 1:31chapter 28. If you fully obey the Lord your
- 1:44God and carefully keep all his commandments that I'm giving you
- 1:47today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the
- 1:51nations of the world. You will experience all these
- 1:55blessings if you obey the Lord your God.
- 1:59Your towns and your fields will be blessed.
- 2:02Your children and your crops will be blessed.
- 2:04The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed.
- 2:08Your fruit baskets and bread boards will be blessed.
- 2:11Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed.
- 2:16The Lord will conquer your enemies When they attack you.
- 2:19They will attack you from One Direction, but they will scatter
- 2:23from you in seven. The Lord will guarantee a
- 2:26blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses
- 2:30with grain. The Lord your God will bless you
- 2:34in the land He is giving you. If you obey the commands of the
- 2:37Lord your God and walk in His ways.
- 2:40The Lord will establish you as His holy people, as He swore He
- 2:45would do. Then all the nations of the
- 2:48world will see that you are a people claimed by the Lord, and
- 2:52they will stand in awe of you. The Lord will give you
- 2:57prosperity in the land He swore to your ancestors to give you,
- 3:01blessing you with many children, numerous livestock, and abundant
- 3:05crops. The Lord will send reign at the
- 3:08proper time from His rich treasury in the heavens and will
- 3:12bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations,
- 3:17but you will never need to borrow from them if you listen
- 3:20to these commands of the Lord your God that I'm giving you
- 3:23today. If you carefully obey them, the
- 3:26Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will
- 3:30always be on top and never at the bottom.
- 3:33You must not turn away from any of the commands I'm giving you
- 3:36today, nor follow after other gods and worship them.
- 3:42But if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God and do not
- 3:47obey all the commands and decrees I'm giving you today,
- 3:52all these curses will come and overwhelm you.
- 3:56Your towns and your fields will be cursed.
- 3:59Your fruit baskets and bread boards will be cursed.
- 4:03Your children and your crops will be cursed.
- 4:06The offspring of your herds and flocks will be cursed wherever
- 4:10you go, and whatever you do, you will be cursed.
- 4:14The Lord himself will send on you curses, confusion, and
- 4:18frustration in everything you do until the last of you are
- 4:22completely destroyed for doing evil and abandoning me.
- 4:27The Lord will afflict you with diseases until none of you are
- 4:30left in the land you are about to enter and occupy.
- 4:34The Lord will strike you with wasting diseases, fever and
- 4:38inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight
- 4:43and mildew. These disasters will pursue you
- 4:47until you die. The skies above will be as
- 4:51unyielding as bronze, and the earth beneath will be as hard as
- 4:55iron. The Lord will change The rain
- 4:58that falls on your land into powder and dust will pour down
- 5:02from the sky until you are destroyed.
- 5:06The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies.
- 5:09You will attack your enemies from One Direction, but you will
- 5:13scatter from them. In seven you will be an object
- 5:16of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
- 5:19Your corpses will be food for all the scavenging birds and
- 5:23wild animals, and no one will be there to chase them away.
- 5:27The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with
- 5:31tumours, scurvy, and the itch from which you cannot be cured.
- 5:36The Lord will strike you with madness, blindness and panic.
- 5:40He will grope around in broad daylight like a blind person
- 5:44groping in the darkness that you will not find your way.
- 5:48He will be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will
- 5:51come to save you. You will be engaged to a woman,
- 5:56but another man will sleep with her.
- 5:59He will build a house, but someone else will live in it.
- 6:02You'll plant a vineyard, but you will never enjoy its fruit.
- 6:06Your ox will be butchered before your eyes, but you will not eat
- 6:09a single bite of the meat. Your donkey will be taken from
- 6:13you, never to be returned. Your sheep and goats will be
- 6:16given to your enemies, and no one will be there to help you.
- 6:21You will watch as your sons and daughters are taken away as
- 6:24slaves. Your heart will break for them,
- 6:27but you won't be able to help them.
- 6:30A foreign nation you have never heard about will eat the crops
- 6:34you worked so hard to grow. You will suffer under constant
- 6:38oppression and harsh treatment. You will go mad because of all
- 6:42the tragedy you see around you. The Lord will cover your knees
- 6:46and legs with incurable boils. In fact, you'll be covered from
- 6:50head to foot. The Lord will exile you and your
- 6:53king to a nation unknown to you and your ancestors.
- 6:57There in exile, you will worship gods of wood and stone.
- 7:02You will become an object of horror, ridicule, and mockery
- 7:05among all the nations to which the Lord sends you.
- 7:09You will plant much, but harvest little, for locusts will eat
- 7:12your crops. You will plant vineyards and
- 7:15care for them, but you will not drink the wine or eat the
- 7:18grapes, for worms will destroy the vines.
- 7:22You will grow olive trees throughout your land, but you
- 7:25will never use the olive oil, for the fruit will drop before
- 7:28it ripens. You will have sons and
- 7:31daughters, but you will lose them, for they will be LED away
- 7:35into captivity. Swarms of insects will destroy
- 7:38your trees and crops. The foreigners living among you
- 7:43will become stronger and stronger, while you become
- 7:46weaker and weaker. They will lend money to you, but
- 7:51you will not lend to them. They will be the head and you
- 7:54will be the tail. If you refuse to listen to the
- 7:58Lord your God and to obey the commands and decrees He has
- 8:01given you, all these curses will pursue and overtake you until
- 8:06you are destroyed. These horrors will serve as a
- 8:09sign and warning among you and your descendants forever.
- 8:14If you do not serve the Lord your God with joy and enthusiasm
- 8:18for the abundant benefits you have received, you will serve
- 8:21your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you.
- 8:25You will be left hungry, thirsty, naked, and lacking in
- 8:28everything. The Lord will put an iron yoke
- 8:31on your neck, oppressing you harshly until He has destroyed
- 8:35you. The Lord will bring a distant
- 8:38nation against you from the end of the earth, and it will swoop
- 8:41down on you like a vulture. It is a nation whose language
- 8:45you do not understand, a fierce and heartless nation that shows
- 8:49no respect for the old and no pity for the young.
- 8:53Its armies will devour your livestock and crops, and you
- 8:56will be destroyed. They will leave you no grain,
- 9:00new wine, olive oil, calves or lambs, and you will starve to
- 9:04death. They will attack your cities
- 9:06until all the fortified walls in your land, the walls you trusted
- 9:10to protect you, are knocked down.
- 9:13They will attack all the towns in the land the Lord your God
- 9:17has given you. The siege and terrible distress
- 9:21of the enemy's attack will be so severe that you will eat the
- 9:24flesh of your own sons and daughters whom the Lord your God
- 9:29has given you. The most tender hearted man
- 9:32among you will have no compassion for his own brother,
- 9:35his beloved wife and his surviving children.
- 9:39He will refuse to share with them the flesh he is devouring,
- 9:42the flash of one of his own children, because he has nothing
- 9:46else to eat during the siege, and terrible distress that your
- 9:49enemy will inflict on all your towns.
- 9:52The most tender and delicate woman among you, so delicate she
- 9:56would not so much as touch the ground with her foot, will be
- 10:00selfish toward the husband she loves and toward her own son or
- 10:04daughter. She will hide from them the
- 10:07afterbirth and the new baby she is born so that she herself can
- 10:11secretly eat them. She will have nothing else to
- 10:14eat during the siege and terrible distress that your
- 10:17enemy will inflict on all your towns.
- 10:20If you refuse to obey all the words of instruction that are
- 10:23written in this book, and if you do not fear the glorious and
- 10:26awesome name of the Lord your God, then the Lord will
- 10:30overwhelm you and your children with indescribable plagues.
- 10:34These plagues will be intense and without relief, making you
- 10:38miserable and unbearably sick. It will afflict you with all the
- 10:43diseases of Egypt that you feared so much, and you will
- 10:46have no relief. The Lord will afflict you with
- 10:49every sickness and plague there is, even those not mentioned in
- 10:53this book of instruction. Until you are destroyed.
- 10:57Though you become as numerous as the stars in the sky, few of you
- 11:01will be left because you would not listen to the Lord your God.
- 11:06Just as the Lord has found great pleasure in causing you to
- 11:09prosper and multiply, the Lord will find pleasure in destroying
- 11:13you. You will be torn from the land
- 11:16you are about to enter and occupy, for the Lord will
- 11:19scatter you among all the nations, from one end of the
- 11:23earth to the other. There you will worship foreign
- 11:26gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods made
- 11:30of wood and stone. There, among those nations, you
- 11:34will find no peace or place to rest, and the Lord will cause
- 11:38your heart to tremble, your eyesight to fail, and your soul
- 11:43to despair. Your life will constantly hang
- 11:46in the balance. You will live night and day in
- 11:49fear, unsure if you will survive.
- 11:52In the morning you will say if only it were night, and in the
- 11:56evening you will say, if only it were mourning, for you will be
- 12:01terrified by the awful horrors you see around you.
- 12:04Then the Lord will send you back to Egypt in ships, to a
- 12:08destination I promised you would never see again.
- 12:12There you will offer to sell yourselves to your enemies as
- 12:15slaves, but no one will buy you. Well Lord, if this is not the
- 12:29most terrifying Bible reading we have read in a long time, I
- 12:33don't know what is. To modern ears, this sounds
- 12:36horrific, but we understand that this is an ancient text and at
- 12:41the Time Lord, they used hyperbole to make sure that the
- 12:44point was clear. And the point is abundantly
- 12:48clear that you want your people to follow you and choose life
- 12:53and choose blessing. And that entails following you,
- 12:58remembering you, and worshipping you and Lord, while this text
- 13:05uses the language of blessing and curses.
- 13:08Ah Lord, here we live under a new paradigm, a new covenant
- 13:13where through the work of Jesus on that cross, we are forgiven
- 13:18and loved. And even when we deserve
- 13:21cursing, we receive your blessing.
- 13:24All we need do is come before you with our arms open wide and
- 13:28say we are sorry. Please, Lord, forgive us and
- 13:33your blessings rain down on us. We are so grateful for the wide
- 13:41and wild generosity of your love to us.
- 13:45And so we claim that love today, and we thank you for it.
- 13:48And we pray all of this in the name of Jesus, through whom all
- 13:52of this is possible. Amen.
