- 0:49Good afternoon everybody, this is Ty Tyson speaking from Briggs Stadium in Detroit.
- 0:55Speaking for WWJ, the Detroit News, and W45D, the frequency modulation station in Detroit.
- 1:07And we're all set to bring you this All-Star baseball game this afternoon,
- 1:13the annual All-Star game between the pictures of the American League and the National League.
- 1:20A great day for a ball game, probably the best day that the teams have had since the inauguration of this series between the Blue Clubs some nine years ago.
- 1:36Bill Finkel's fans are out here playing right below us.
- 1:40It's pretty hard to talk over. They're right down here between the home plate and the screen behind the stands.
- 1:48The American Leaguers are taking their infield practice in the present time.
- 1:53And Al Schacht's doing a bit of frowning around third base.
- 1:57Trying to get a little cleaner to you with all the fans going on.
- 2:01I assure you the fans will not be here after the play starts. They'll be over in the stands.
- 2:08Briggs Stadium is all decked out in the national colors.
- 2:14There are very few vacant seats at the present time, and the reserved seats for the game were sold long before noon.
- 2:23They're still coming in to take up positions in what few vacant seats are available now.
- 2:30They're sold, however. The only seats that I can see that are vacant I know are in the reserved section,
- 2:37so most tickets have been sold, and these latecomers will be here probably before the game starts or shortly after it gets underway.
- 2:45The actual play will start at 1.30.
- 2:51Right now with the American Leaguers taking infield practice,
- 2:55Buddy Tebbott is doing the catching here with Artie Fletcher batting them out.
- 2:58Jimmy Fox is at first base, and Al Schacht down there clowning at third.
- 3:03He just let a ball go right through the center of the straw hat, getting quite a laugh from the crowd.
- 3:08Al will do some other stunts here a little later, but at the present time he's doing that old stunt of his playing third base, which we've watched for years.
- 3:18Now the lineups. I'm going to give you the tentative lineups right now.
- 3:23We'll check later on, but I know that a lot of you like to get these written down when you have plenty of time and long before the game gets started,
- 3:31and I think it will be the official starting lineup.
- 3:35I got the American Leaguers from Del Baker, who was managing this club, and Bill McKechnie, managing the National Leaguers, gave it to me.
- 3:46And of course there may be a change before the game actually starts, but I doubt it very much.
- 3:51Inasmuch as this is played in an American League part, the American Leaguers are the home club, and the Nationals will go to bat first,
- 4:00and here's their batting order.
- 4:03Stan Hack, H-A-C-K, third base, he's from the Chicago Cubs.
- 4:14Terry Moore, M-O-O-R-E, the St. Louis Cardinals, left field.
- 4:23Pete Reiser, R-E-I-S-E-R, Reiser, from the Brooklyn Dodgers, center field.
- 4:33Johnny Mize, M-I-Z-E, St. Louis Card, first base.
- 4:41Bill Nicholson, N-I-C-H-O-L-S-O-N, from the Chicago Cubs, right field.
- 4:51Markey Bond, D-A-U-D-A-J-N, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop.
- 4:59Linus Fry, F-R-E-Y, Cincinnati Reds, second base.
- 5:07Mickey Owen, O-W-E-N, the Brooklyn Dodgers, catcher.
- 5:14And Whitlow Wyatt, W-Y-A-T-T, of the Brooklyn Dodgers, pitcher.
- 5:21Now let's see, that gives two of the Chicago Cubs,
- 5:36two of the St. Louis Cardinals,
- 5:41three of the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 5:46one Pittsburgh Pirate, and one Cincinnati Red,
- 5:52the starting lineup for the National League.
- 5:55For the Americans, it's Bobby Doerr, D-O-E-R-R,
- 6:01for the Boston Red Sox, second base.
- 6:05Cecil Buck Travis, T-R-A-V-I-S, Washington, third base.
- 6:10Joe DiMaggio, New York Yankees, center field.
- 6:18Ted Williams, of the Boston Red Sox, left field.
- 6:24Jeff Heath, of the Cleveland Indians, right field.
- 6:29Joe Cronin, of the Boston Red Sox, shortstop.
- 6:34Rudy York, of the Detroit Tigers, third base.
- 6:39Bill Dickey, the New York Yankees, catcher.
- 6:44And Bob Feller, of the Cleveland Indians, pitcher.
- 6:50So that gives us DiMaggio and Dickey, of the Yankees.
- 7:00York, of the Tigers.
- 7:03Feller, of the New York Yankees, catcher.
- 7:08And Heath, of the Cleveland Indians.
- 7:15Bobby Doerr, Ted Williams, and Joe Cronin,
- 7:22of the Boston Red Sox.
- 7:25And Cecil Travis, for the Washington Senators,
- 7:29in the starting lineup. Just a minute.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:34All right, what do you want?
- 7:43Al Schacht has now gone out on that pitcher's mound.
- 7:51He is warming up with a gent that almost knocked him over.
- 7:56I think it's Johnny, Johnny Radulovich.
- 8:02He's really sucking it back to Al.
- 8:04Al has taken his glove off the hand.
- 8:06And now one of the boys are bringing him out a glove
- 8:09that is just about as big as the ordinary catcher's chest protectors.
- 8:15Not quite as big as the ones that the umpire use,
- 8:17but maybe Al will do a little better later on.
- 8:22Winding up, you can't even see from, well, a little below his shoulders.
- 8:27He's entirely covered from there up by this mitt.
- 8:30He's lost out there. He's facing the center field as he starts winding again.
- 8:34Now he turns around. He heaves this one in, the ball.
- 8:39Catcher shakes his head and throws it back awfully hard.
- 8:42Backs Al back three or four feet. Tears that glove off.
- 8:46And he has a telephone there. He's picking it up and calling.
- 8:50And here comes the same lad out from the Tigers bench,
- 8:54which will be the American League bench this time,
- 8:57more of the third base side, wheeling out a glove that just fills a wheelbarrow.
- 9:02And it's a good sized wheelbarrow, not a toy barrow,
- 9:05the kind that Neil Conway uses out here to keep the field in good shape.
- 9:10He's got this glove up on his shoulder and partly on his head.
- 9:13He's staggering around out there.
- 9:15He's really putting on a good show for the folks.
- 9:17He starts, starts to swing and the weight of the glove
- 9:20pulls him back about ten feet behind the pitcher's mound.
- 9:27There's the wind up and the glove knocks him flat on his back.
- 9:31He puts it up and down on his head and it drives him flat to the ground.
- 9:35In the meantime, Bob Feller is warming up in all seriousness
- 9:40down here for the American Lakers and Whitlow Wyatt for the Nationals.
- 9:45Both right handers.
- 9:48Shack is down on the ground.
- 9:50This catcher threw the ball back just over his head and cleared out into center field.
- 9:54They're getting ready to raise the flag.
- 9:56And the band is all set here to play the National Anthem.
- 10:01The umpires have just come out.
- 10:03And here's the way the umpiring will be handled during the first four and a half innings.
- 10:08Bill Summers of the American League.
- 10:13We're getting the lineup over the P.A. system.
- 10:17And I'll give you the umpires before they start.
- 10:20Bill Summers of the American League at behind the plate.
- 10:26Hugh Jordan of the National League at first.
- 10:30Bill Grieve of the American League at second.
- 10:33And Babe Pennelly of the National League at third.
- 10:36And incidentally, Babe Pennelly played third base here in Detroit, 1920.
- 10:42So he's starting this all-star game as umpiring at the same spot.
- 10:46I will check up on this official batting order.
- 10:49We're all right so far.
- 10:51Mack, third base.
- 10:53Moore, left field.
- 10:55Reeser, center field.
- 10:57Myers, first base.
- 10:58Nicholson, right field.
- 11:00Vaughn, shortstop.
- 11:02Frye, second base.
- 11:05Owen, catcher.
- 11:10And Wyatt, pitcher.
- 11:14National League lineup, which I gave you a while ago is correct.
- 11:17Here comes the American League batting order.
- 11:23Doar, second base.
- 11:26Travis, third base.
- 11:33Joe DiMaggio, center field.
- 11:38Williams, left field.
- 11:43Heath, right field.
- 11:49Cronin, shortstop.
- 11:54York, first base.
- 12:03Dickie, New York, catcher.
- 12:09Feller, Cleveland, pitcher.
- 12:14The umpires are coming up, and it won't be long until this all-star game is actually on the way.
- 12:25In the eight previous games, ten home runs were made in these all-star contests,
- 12:31five by each league, so they're all even as far as that's concerned.
- 12:36Only Frankie Frisch of the Cardinals and Lou Gehrig of the Yankees produced more than one.
- 12:42Frisch hit for the circus in the inaugural game in 1933, repeated in 1934.
- 12:48Gehrig made a home run in 1936 and another in 37.
- 12:52Now, others that are, may get a home run today are Joe DiMaggio, who hit one in 1939.
- 12:59Jimmy Fox, when playing with the Athletics, hit one in 1935.
- 13:06Joe Medwick, who was representing the Dodgers this time while with the Cardinals, hit one in 1934.
- 13:14The umpires, the managers, and the coaches have come out to the plate, getting all set.
- 13:25And as I say, it will not be long until here we go.
- 13:29In 1933, the American League won 4 to 2.
- 13:33In 34, the American League repeated again 9 to 7.
- 13:38And again in 35, they won 4 to 1.
- 13:41Everybody up, National Anthem.
- 13:44National Anthem.
- 14:02National Anthem.
- 14:12National Anthem.
- 14:34There we are.
- 14:36There's the roar of the crowd.
- 14:39The band gets away from here and it won't be long, continuing with this record of the All-Star Games.
- 14:46After the Americans had won again 8 to 3 in 1937 for five straight victories,
- 14:54the Nationals have won the last three, or have won two.
- 14:58In 1938, the Nationals won 4 to 1.
- 15:01In 39, the Americans won 3 to 1.
- 15:04And in 40, the Nationals won 4 to 1.
- 15:07The Nationals also won in 36. Pardon that.
- 15:10There were there 4 to 3 in 1936.
- 15:13So the American League has the edge of 5 to 3 so far.
- 15:20Umpire Bill Summers, the plate umpire, first half of this game is yelling,
- 15:24come on boys, get the field clear to photographers.
- 15:27Parafinalia, bring the lads out.
- 15:31It's just about 1.30.
- 15:33And Commissioner Landis, President Harridge, and Frick of the two leagues,
- 15:38want to get this thing started right on time.
- 15:44A lot of old ballplayers here today in this crowd of over 50,000.
- 15:50I probably, the oldest one, at least the oldest one that I have any recollection of,
- 15:56any knowledge of being here, is Bobby Low.
- 15:59He's over 70 and he was a great hitter at the time.
- 16:04He's out here, lives in Detroit, he's enjoying it.
- 16:07There go the American Leaguers, out on the field.
- 16:11York at first base, off the Detroit Tigers.
- 16:14Bobby Doerr, the Boston Red Sox at second.
- 16:16Joe Cronin of the Red Sox at third.
- 16:19Cecil Buck Travis, short rather Cronin, Cecil Buck Travis, of the Senators at third.
- 16:26William Williams of the Boston Red Sox in left field.
- 16:30Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees in center field.
- 16:33And Jeff Heath of the Cleveland Indians in right field.
- 16:38And out there pouring in the ball to Bill Dickey behind the plate is Bob Feller,
- 16:43Cleveland Indians' ace right-hander, with 16 victories as against four defeats.
- 16:50Now the rules of the game, the all-star game, is that a pitcher works three innings.
- 16:57He can't work any more than three unless he happens to be the third pitcher in the game
- 17:03and the game goes into extra innings.
- 17:05Then he dares to stay in as long as the manager so desires.
- 17:09Umpire in chief Bill Summers is yelling something to Neil Conway,
- 17:15the groundkeeper, to be sure and get a couple of these photographers out of the way
- 17:20so they're down beyond the American League dugout opposite third base.
- 17:28Stan Hack, left-handed batter, third baseman of the Chicago Cubs,
- 17:34his first man up in this ballgame.
- 17:41The National Leaguers are wearing their road uniforms,
- 17:43so they're quite colorful, different ones.
- 17:45Feller's first pitch, a fast ball on the inside corner around his knees for a call strike.
- 17:51The Cubs have sort of a silky looking uniform, light blue pants with a white stripe down the seam.
- 17:59Same color shirt, sort of a jersey effect with dark blue sleeves, white shoulder pads,
- 18:05and a red stripe around the sleeve just above the elbow and a blue cap, rather colorful.
- 18:12Feller just broke another fast one in there for the second called strike on Hack.
- 18:19Hack is hitting in the neighborhood of 310 for the season.
- 18:23The count is two strikes and nothing.
- 18:25Feller starts that windup, here's the pitch,
- 18:28and it's a low breaking curve inside close to the batter's feet for ball one.
- 18:33Two strikes, one ball.
- 18:35First man up in the all-star game, Stan Hack of the Chicago Cubs,
- 18:40third baseman on the National League team.
- 18:43We have a strong breeze blowing from the outfield right into the plate.
- 18:48There's the windup for the next one, and Hack swings on a curveball to drop down in the dirt.
- 18:52Dickie digging that out of the dirt.
- 18:54Feller not relying on the fast ball to blow by that time, but a beautiful curve, one out.
- 19:02Next we have Terry Moore of the St. Louis Cardinals, left fielder, and a right-hand batter.
- 19:09Wearing the gray with the red trimming, steps in there, waves his batter.
- 19:18And swings on the first pitch, a high fast one, getting the underside of the ball, falling it back to the net.
- 19:24Strike one on Moore.
- 19:26One man up, first inning, one strike on Terry Moore.
- 19:34Feller draws his pitching hand across his shirt front,
- 19:37goes on the old meat hand, leans over, gets the sign, begins that windup.
- 19:41The arm is up, there's the kick, and the pitch is a curve outside, a little high.
- 19:45Ball one and strike one.
- 19:51One ball, one strike, one away, bases empty in the first inning.
- 19:56Leo DeRoscher coaching at first base for the Nationals,
- 19:59barking in there, Terry telling him to pick out a good one and hit it.
- 20:03Feller starts his windup, and the pitch is in there, a fast ball on the inside corner, belt high, and 20 rapid.
- 20:11On the count is two strikes, one ball.
- 20:16Two and one on Terry Moore.
- 20:20Feller pulls his cap down a little more firmly, kicks around at the pitcher's slab, leans over to get the sign from Dickey.
- 20:26Bill comes out of that crouch, the windup starts, and the pitch is a hit, a fly ball rather, in short.
- 20:32Center field, shortstop Cronin backing up for it and takes it fully out.
- 20:37A little blooper in short center field, about 40 feet behind second base.
- 20:42Cronin, shortstop, making the foot out.
- 20:46So there's two away, and Pete Reeser, sensational hitting outfielder of the Brooklyn Dodgers, hitting 360 and a long ball hitter.
- 20:58This kid is a pimp. I've seen him in spring training and he really can hit.
- 21:02Left-handed batter, Feller goes to work, the base is empty, two outs, first pitch, fast ball high, outside, ball one.
- 21:13He works for DeRosier, and DeRosier hollered, hey, and he looked around, he says, make him get it over and then sock it.
- 21:19One ball to count.
- 21:22Two men out, base is empty.
- 21:25Dickie comes out of that crouch, Feller starts his windup, then begins all over again.
- 21:30There's the motion, the pitch is a fast ball around the batter's knees for a called strike.
- 21:35The count is one and one on Reeser.
- 21:40Brooklyn Dodgers road uniforms are gray, blue stockings and blue caps, blue letters.
- 21:47The count is one and one.
- 21:50Feller has the sign, there's the motion for the windup.
- 21:52They're playing Reeser straight ahead, Reeser bunt, foul down the third baseline.
- 21:57And the count is two strikes and one ball.
- 22:02Two and one.
- 22:10Jimmy Wilson is the manager of the Chicago Cubs, coaching at third.
- 22:14Leo DeRosier, manager of the Dodgers, coaching at first.
- 22:18And the count is two strikes, one ball to Pete Reeser.
- 22:21Feller gets a new ball ready, the arm goes up, here's the pitch.
- 22:24Reeser swings on a low fast ball off the outside corner for strike three.
- 22:30That ends the first half of the first inning.
- 22:35Feller striking out two and causing the other to pop to Cronin and trot center field.
- 22:41No run, no hit, no error.
- 22:46First up struck out, Moore popped to Cronin behind second and Reeser struck out.
- 22:53Now we get the American Leaguers.
- 22:56See what they can do against the right-hand pitching of Whitlow Wyatt.
- 23:04Mickey Owen, who is doing the catching at least as long as his battery mate,
- 23:09Whitlow Wyatt is on the hill, first three innings at least,
- 23:13wasn't expected to catch at all in this game although he'd been chosen,
- 23:18but he suffered a bad bump over the eye and it didn't look as though he'd get into the game at all.
- 23:26However, he is here and is going to catch.
- 23:30He's wearing a mask with a special padding, looks like sheep's wool all up around the top there
- 23:38and also along the left side at least, down along his jaw.
- 23:43First man up will be Bobby Doerr of the Boston Red Sox playing second base for the American Leaguers this afternoon.
- 23:52Right-handed batter.
- 23:56Bob was out of the game, Bob the lineup for some time due to a very bad Charlie hold.
- 24:03He's telling me he's all right now and he's in there ready to go.
- 24:08He's been playing recently.
- 24:09The last time the Red Sox were here he was out of commission.
- 24:13Now here's Whitlow Wyatt, the record of 13 victories and 40 defeats.
- 24:19Big right-hander used to be with the Tigers.
- 24:21The first pitch, Doerr hits a high fly, a rainmaker right up at second base and fight.
- 24:28Takes it for the putout.
- 24:32One away on the first pitch.
- 24:41Next comes Cecil Travis.
- 24:45Third baseman, Washington Senators, left-handed batter.
- 24:53Nice to the American Leaguers all wearing the white uniforms, the home uniforms.
- 24:58Wyatt's arm goes up for the pitch.
- 25:00It's a curve ball down in the dirt, ball one.
- 25:06The boys are passing the ball around the infield a bit.
- 25:09Owen tossing it out to Hack.
- 25:10Hack gives it a rubbing up and tosses it back to Wyatt.
- 25:16They're playing Travis just about straight away at that,
- 25:19except shortstop Archie Vaughn has moved over a little toward second,
- 25:22but the outfield is playing straight ahead.
- 25:24And the next pitch to Travis, a fastball on the outside corner,
- 25:27letter high for a called strike, makes the count all even at one and one.
- 25:33One strike, one ball.
- 25:35And the motion for the next one, outside.
- 25:38Wyatt trying for that outside corner, has missed with two pitches.
- 25:42He isn't very far outside, but just off.
- 25:44So the count is two balls, one strike.
- 25:49Taking his time looking for the sign, Owen comes out of the crotch.
- 25:51There's the motion.
- 25:53And it's fouled into the upper deck, opposite third base, souvenir ball.
- 25:58Strike two and the count is two and two on Travis.
- 26:02He hit a fastball, a high fast pitch.
- 26:05A little late getting around that time.
- 26:08Two strikes, two balls.
- 26:12One man out, bases empty in the first, no score.
- 26:17Here's the pitch.
- 26:18Travis turns one around back here in the screen, right behind the plate.
- 26:22Foul ball.
- 26:25I can't see very many open spaces in Briggs Stadium right now.
- 26:32I would say right now there are over 50,000 in here.
- 26:36Wyatt gets a new ball, rubs it up a bit.
- 26:39Choosy's gum, waiting for the sign.
- 26:42He already has it.
- 26:43Owen comes up, here's the pitch.
- 26:45And there goes a drive to center field, coming in fast for it.
- 26:48And takes it for the putout, his center fielder, Pete Reiter, a reacher.
- 26:54Two men out and a big hand being afforded, Joe DiMaggio.
- 27:05Joe comes up there, taps the plate for the handle of his bat.
- 27:10This game doesn't count on that consecutive record of hitting.
- 27:13He's already hit in 48 straight games.
- 27:17See whether he makes it 49, but this will not count.
- 27:20Thursday's when Joe wants to get number 49.
- 27:23First pitch of Wyatt, right over the outside corner, belt high, a nice curve for a called strike.
- 27:34And they're playing Mr. DiMaggio plenty deep and shading him a little toward left field.
- 27:40The next pitch is a high fly.
- 27:43Third baseman Hack is coming over across the foul line as the wind blows it right into the third base coach's box.
- 27:49He takes it for the putout.
- 27:51So each team retired in order in the first inning.
- 27:56No run, no hit, no error.
- 28:05Door, pop to second baseman Frye.
- 28:09Travis, fly to reacher in left center, and DiMaggio fouled out to third baseman Hack.
- 28:19Now we're ready to go into the second inning.
- 28:24We'll have Johnny Mize, Bill Nicholson, and Archie Vaughan.
- 28:32First three to face Bob Feller.
- 28:34Big Johnny standing there working with three bats.
- 28:38He's a powerful lad, hitting.348.
- 28:52Johnny Mize, Cardinal, first baseman, left-handed batter.
- 28:58First man to face Feller in the second inning.
- 29:00No score, no hits.
- 29:02The windup, Feller's first pitch to Mize is a fast ball outside for ball one.
- 29:12Bob steps around, gets a better footing out there on the hill.
- 29:15Field is an excellent playing condition.
- 29:18An ideal day, bright sun, little breeze.
- 29:21Next pitch, Mize hits a high fly to center field.
- 29:24DiMaggio playing perfect position, fades a couple of steps and takes it for an easy out.
- 29:32One down and Bill Nicholson of the Chicago Cubs, left hand hitting right fielder.
- 29:39Moving up in the spot just vacated by Mize.
- 29:48He's a big powerful lad, too.
- 29:51Now that wind has switched a little bit and blowing more toward the right field stands,
- 29:57benefiting left-hand full hitters a bit.
- 29:59Feller's first pitch, a fast ball, fouled back against the screen, strike one.
- 30:04Came in there with a fast, letter-high pitch.
- 30:08One strike on Nicholson.
- 30:11One man out, bases empty, second inning, the all-star game.
- 30:17No hits and no runs.
- 30:22Feller working on this new ball, he's satisfied with it now.
- 30:26Leans over and gets the sign from Dickey.
- 30:29Bill comes out of the crouch, the arm goes up, here's the pitch.
- 30:32A curve ball breaks over, starts outside and comes over belt-high for a called strike on Nicholson.
- 30:39Feller throwing a nice hook.
- 30:43One ball, one strike.
- 30:49Now Bob is crouching over, he's all set, straightens up.
- 30:52The arm goes up twice, there's the kick, the pitch is a fast one outside, a little high for ball two.
- 30:58Two balls, one strike.
- 31:07Two and one.
- 31:10Crowd pretty quiet, very tense.
- 31:16Feller begins his motion, here's the pitch.
- 31:20Outside again, another fast ball, a little high and outside.
- 31:23Two balls and two strikes.
- 31:29That derosher has plenty of voice coaching down there.
- 31:33First base, Jimmy Wilson, manager of Nicholson, just gave him a sign.
- 31:38I don't know whether he's reading Feller or not, but at any rate he gave him a sign.
- 31:43Now we'll see what happens.
- 31:44There's the wind up, here's the pitch, and it's a curve ball that breaks over for a called third strike.
- 31:50Whatever Jimmy gave him, I don't know whether Nicholson caught it or not,
- 31:56but at any rate he stood there with his bat on his shoulder as Feller broke over a curve for a called third strike.
- 32:02So there's two out, bases empty.
- 32:04Arki Vaughan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop and left-hand batter coming up.
- 32:09Three left-hand hitters in a row in this inning.
- 32:11That's three strikeouts for Feller of the first five men retired.
- 32:16First pitch is a high fly close to the foul line in left.
- 32:19Ted Williams is coming over fast for it.
- 32:21He's under it and takes it just as he crosses the foul line.
- 32:24Plenty high in left field and the wind blowing toward right field helped keep that ball in
- 32:31where Williams could finally get up to it to make the catch.
- 32:35So that ends the second inning for the Nationals.
- 32:40No run, no hit, no error.
- 32:46Mize fly deep to DiMaggio in center field.
- 32:53Nicholson took a called third strike and Vaughan fouled to Williams in left.
- 33:00Coming up for the second time at bat, the American League presents Ted Williams hitting 4-0-5.
- 33:11Jeff Heath, 3-71.
- 33:14Joe Cronin, 3-38.
- 33:21Williams is the only lad who has hit a ball over the roof of the third deck in this ballpark.
- 33:29It is quite a cloud.
- 33:34There's Owen's cause to fry at second, fry whips at the Vaughan, Vaughan over to Hack.
- 33:39Hack gives it a going over before returning it to the pitcher's mound.
- 33:43Now Wyatt has it and we're ready to go.
- 33:46And this is WWJ and W45D Detroit bringing you the All-Star Classic from Briggs Stadium.
- 33:55Williams up there at the plate, Wyatt looks him over.
- 33:59Now he has the sign, Owen comes out of that crouch, the arm goes up for the pitch,
- 34:02and it's a fastball outside about shin high for ball one.
- 34:06And when shin high on Williams, it's up there pretty close to six feet.
- 34:16They're playing Teddy well around toward right field.
- 34:18The defense, next pitch a curve breaks over the plate but too low.
- 34:22Ball two, two balls, no strikes.
- 34:29Two and nothing on Williams leading off.
- 34:36There's the wind up, the pitch, ball three.
- 34:40Ted almost went for that one, a sinker that broke right down almost in the dirt.
- 34:44Owen had the back of his glove on the ground when he received that pitch.
- 34:51Three and nothing, fastball through the middle, the automatic strike.
- 34:55Williams taking it, never moved his bat off his shoulder.
- 34:59He looks down toward first base where Merv Shea is doing the coaching.
- 35:03Artie Fletcher coaching at third for the Americans.
- 35:06Count is three and one.
- 35:10Wyatt winds, he pitches low for ball four, the first man to get on base in this ninth All-Star Clash.
- 35:18Ted Williams getting there by the base on ball group.
- 35:23Jeff Heath, another left-handed batter, hits a long ball coming up there.
- 35:32Heath of the Cleveland Indians hitting 371.
- 35:37Williams on first, nobody off.
- 35:40Heath seems ready to go and he's backed out of the batter's box, rub a little dirt in his hand,
- 35:45getting a little sign from Fletcher down there at third.
- 35:48Wyatt pitches from the shoulder for the first time.
- 35:50Heath swings at a low breaking drop for strike one.
- 35:53Wyatt had that one down pretty tight, right down around his chin.
- 36:01One strike on Heath.
- 36:04Williams taking a little lead, not much.
- 36:06Mize is holding him on pretty closely.
- 36:08There's the ground ball to second base, it looks like a double play.
- 36:11It's a double play from Fries to Bond to Mize.
- 36:16Looks like a since Taylor made double play when that ball left Heath back.
- 36:20Not very hard hit ball and down toward second, which gave Fries a chance to come into the ball
- 36:26while running in toward second base.
- 36:28Bond coming across, taking the easy toss, then rifling it to Mize to complete the double play.
- 36:33And here comes Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox, right-hand batter, two out and the base is empty in the second.
- 36:39He's there with his bat boys high in the air, waiting for that first pitch.
- 36:44And here it comes and it's in there too, a fast ball, plenty fast on the inside corner about belt high.
- 36:49Call strike on Cronin.
- 36:56Wyatt starts his motion for the next pitch and bends a curve over this time, pulling Mr. Cronin.
- 37:03Belt high curve ball for strike two called, two and nothing.
- 37:08Out base is empty in the second, no score and no hits.
- 37:13Only one man has reached base. That was Ted Williams starting this inning on a base on balls.
- 37:19Playing Cronin toward left field with Bond playing a very deep short stop over toward third.
- 37:23There's the pitch and Cronin flies to right and settling himself for the catch out there in right field
- 37:28as Bill Nicholson takes it for the out and that ends the second inning.
- 37:34No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 37:40Williams first up, walked on five pitches.
- 37:43Heath grounded into a double play, Fry, Bond to Mize and Cronin fly high to Nicholson and right.
- 37:52This is a tight little ball game but we expected the same.
- 37:56Pitchers like Feller and Wyatt opening the game.
- 37:59It really didn't look to me as though either team were going to get any runs in that first three innings.
- 38:07Here comes a couple of boys from the bullpen out under the stands
- 38:10because this will be Feller's last round to go.
- 38:18That is a large gentleman trotting in there Paul, big Paul.
- 38:23When he carries a windbreaker just on half of his body he looks much larger, doesn't he?
- 38:32Yeah, he looked pretty large against Tigers in the last game, last ball.
- 38:38Here we go, it's Linus Fry first up for the Nice and Lakers, Cincinnati Reds second baseman.
- 38:45Left handed batter, Fry, Owen and Wyatt unless they use a pinch hitter for Wyatt.
- 38:52Don't think they will because Witt may pitch the third against the American Lakers.
- 39:00Feller starts his windup and the first pitch is way outside, ball one.
- 39:12One ball to count, Linus Fry first up, third inning, no runs, no hits.
- 39:17Here's the pitch, a swinging strike and he goes for a low ball off the outside corner.
- 39:22On the count is one and one.
- 39:26One strike, one ball, Feller mopping his brow with his search sleeve.
- 39:32Now he's around satisfied, getting the sign, Dickie still in the crotch, Bill comes up, Bob starts his motion.
- 39:38The pitch, ball two, a little high and a trifle outside to a left handed batter.
- 39:45Started throwing him off this near corner to me.
- 39:53Two balls, one strike.
- 40:00And the motion for the next pitch.
- 40:03A foul down the first baseline, right between the bag and the coaches box.
- 40:07The Rochers jumping away from someone has a souvenir, that one took a nice hop as it got out there to the barrier.
- 40:13Someone sitting in a field box reached out and got it.
- 40:16He has a souvenir of this all-star game and the count on Fry is two strikes, two balls.
- 40:21First man up in the third inning of a hitless and scoreless game so far.
- 40:31Feller steps around out there on the mound, smoothing the dirt a little bit where he comes down after delivering the pitch, get a better footing.
- 40:37Now he's in the hole ready to go, his arm goes up and down and up again, here's the pitch.
- 40:42Fry lines a single to right field for the first hit of the ball game.
- 40:47Line drive about ten feet high as it went through the infield midway between first and second base.
- 40:53The first hit of the ball game, Linus Fry of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 40:59And here comes Mickey Owen, Brooklyn catcher.
- 41:05One man on, nobody out.
- 41:09The second-leaguers put the first man on in the second inning but he was erased with a double play for the next batter.
- 41:16Now here's the national, national leaguers have their first chance.
- 41:21Owen is a right-hand batter, Tickey comes up out of that crouch calling for the pitch.
- 41:25Feller pitching for the first time without a full windup, lays the first man over, letter high for a called strike.
- 41:31One strike on Owen.
- 41:34Fry edges off first a bit, Yorker standing right on the bag.
- 41:37There he's caught between first and second, throw to York and then to Cronin.
- 41:41And he's out.
- 41:43Feller, York to Cronin.
- 41:46Fry made his break too soon before Feller delivered the pitch and was an easy out.
- 41:52Feller, York three-six to Cronin.
- 41:55One away.
- 41:59Now Feller can go back to that full windup.
- 42:02And that's a bad break for the nationals.
- 42:06Time called. Owen starts to wander out of the batter's box as an airplane passed not over the field.
- 42:13He was off the beam this time, didn't fly right across the field.
- 42:17But it was a bit disconcerting. Mr. Owen didn't want to take his eye off one of Feller's pitches looking at that airplane.
- 42:24Mickey doesn't want to get hit in the head again.
- 42:27Here comes another plane. I don't know whether it will stop for this one or not. It's coming right over too.
- 42:31Here's the pitch and there's a high fly to left field. Plenty of chance.
- 42:35Williams is galloping in slowly. He's under it now waiting and takes it for the out.
- 42:39Two away.
- 42:41And Wyatt is not going to pitch. We're going to have a pinch hitter for Wyatt.
- 42:50The with is all through after pitching two innings.
- 42:55Mel Ott. Mel Ott is batting for Wyatt.
- 43:03Ott is a left-handed batter that cocks his foot, lifts it off the ground before he swings.
- 43:08That front foot comes up and the pitch is low. Ball one.
- 43:13Ott batting for Wyatt.
- 43:18Melvin is a pretty fair hitter, if anyone should ask you.
- 43:23He has 18 home runs to his credit, leading the older circuit.
- 43:29Left-handed batter. The count is one ball. Two men out. Base is empty.
- 43:34Feller pitches and it's a fast one outside and high for ball two.
- 43:39Feller pitching him down and then high and outside.
- 43:42Two balls, no strikes.
- 43:45Bob starts his windup. Here's the pitch.
- 43:48And he lays that one over midway between the belt and the letters on his uniform for a called strike.
- 43:54Two balls, one strike.
- 44:00Lots of chatter out there in the American League club talking it up to Feller.
- 44:06Bob peers in there for the sign. Dicky's out of the crotch. The arm goes up and the pitch is bowled.
- 44:12Back in the netting behind the plate for strike two, making the count all even at two and two.
- 44:18Two strikes, two balls.
- 44:23Two men out. Base is empty. No score in this ball game.
- 44:29Feller getting a new ball in shape. Has his glove tucked under his arm.
- 44:32Now he pulls it on, dries his pitching hand on his shirt front, leans over, comes up straight, begins his windup.
- 44:42Here's the pitch. And the pitch is outside for ball three.
- 44:47So Ott will have a chance to look over a three and two pitch and make up his mind.
- 44:51I'm glad it's Ott, not me.
- 44:58Three and two. One hit has been made off Feller. He has fanned three and he's walked none.
- 45:05Now there's the windup. This is the pitch. Here she comes.
- 45:09And Ott strikes out, the bat flipping out of his hand, going clear up to first base.
- 45:13Dicky dropping the pitch, which was in the dirt, picked it up through the arc.
- 45:17And that ends the third inning for the National Lakers.
- 45:21And Feller is all through after pitching his three-inning score, allowing one single, no runs, struck out four, and walked none.
- 45:40No score in this ball game. And since Ott batted for Wyatt, Wyatt only worked two innings, gave up no runs, no hits, struck out none, walked one, and Big Paul Derringer, Cincinnati right-hander, now pitching for the National Lakers.
- 46:06He'll pitch first to Rudolph Preston York. And both boys are familiar with each other as far as playing against each other.
- 46:24We also have a new catcher in there. Al Lopez of the Pittsburgh Pirates catching.
- 46:34Rudy York first up, Derringer pitching. And Rudy gets quite a hand.
- 46:43Local boy, only one on this club today.
- 46:51Hits the first pitch, an extremely high fly, an easy chance for center fielder, ricer, and he takes it for the put-out.
- 47:01One away.
- 47:08Next we have Bill Dickey, Yankee catcher, having a marvelously good year after a bad one last year.
- 47:19Bill has come back a long way this year, which is a big help to putting the Yanks up where they are.
- 47:25He's hitting 330 last year. Bill could hardly buy a base hit at this time of the season.
- 47:30First pitch to this left-hand batter is outside, ball one.
- 47:42Derringer winds, pitches a sidearm pitch, which is hit on the ground to second baseman Fry.
- 47:46There's the toss to first, and Dickey is out. Fry to Myers.
- 47:56Roy Cullenbine, St. Louis Browns, Detroit boy, batting for Feller.
- 48:04Roy Cullenbine, he's getting quite a hand.
- 48:14Left, he's a switch hitter, so he'll bat left-handed. Two men are out, base is empty, no score.
- 48:21Derringer winds, here's that pitch, and he breaks a curve over for a called strike.
- 48:34And the motion for the next one, a swinging strike, fastball. He was a little late getting around on that.
- 48:41Two strikes and nothing.
- 48:50Here's the pitch. Cullenbine hits right back to the box, an easy bounder.
- 48:55Derringer grabs it, tosses to Myers, Cully is out, and that ends the third inning.
- 49:03No run, no hit, no error. Three scoreless innings in this ninth All-Star Classic.
- 49:11And now we've got a new American League pitcher, and it looks to me very much as though it might be Lefty, Thornton, Lee.
- 49:18The last time I saw Lefty, Thornton, Lee, he was doing tricks for the Tigers here.
- 49:24He has won ten games for the White Soxers.
- 49:40Lefty, Lee, Thornton, Lee, now working for the American Lakers.
- 49:50No score in the first three innings. This is WWJ and W45D Detroit.
- 49:58The third man, Lee, will pitch to left-handed batting Stan Hack. First time around, feller, fanned Hack.
- 50:17All right, here we go. Hack is in there, leading off in the fourth inning.
- 50:30Lee's arm goes up for the first pitch, a sidearm curve for a called strike.
- 50:34Hack was going to swing, decided not to, but the ball bent over the outside corner, around his knees for a called strike.
- 50:44And the motion for the next one. Inside, ball one, one and one.
- 50:52Throws a sidearm half crossfire pitch. Big tall range, you lad, six feet.
- 51:00Arm goes up and he pitches low, ball two. Tried for that outside corner with a knee-high pitch, but the ball was too low.
- 51:07And it's two balls and one strike. Two and one.
- 51:15Ball three, a little bit off the outside corner, up around the letters of the uniform.
- 51:21Shakes his head, he didn't think that should have been called a ball.
- 51:24That's the first time we've seen any of the pitchers question the pitch, or just question the calling of a pitch.
- 51:31Three and one, he may have to come in with a fat one this time. He does for a called strike.
- 51:37Not too fat at that. Ball was down around the batter's knees.
- 51:41Hack preferred to play the string out, the count is three and two.
- 51:48This is the payball, there's the wind-up. Here she comes, and it's socked on the ground for a hit.
- 51:54A single just out of the reach of Cronin, tried for a backhand stop, going over toward third base,
- 51:59but the shortstop couldn't get in front of it, and that's the second hit of the game,
- 52:03and the National Leaguers have both of them.
- 52:07Fry is single to open the third inning. Hack's single to open the fourth.
- 52:13The Fry was tapped off first, and I imagine that Hack will play it a little safer,
- 52:21especially with a left-hand pitcher up there holding him on.
- 52:26Terry Moore, foul of the first pitch into the crowd out beyond the National League dugout up first base way.
- 52:33Ball skipping around out there. Here's a fan something to laugh at.
- 52:38And umpire Summers tossed a new ball out to Lee.
- 52:42Hack takes a bit of a lead. Moore here a right-hand batter, hits the right field, a fly ball,
- 52:47and it's an easy chance for the putout out there taken by right fielder Heath.
- 52:57So there's one away. Hack remaining on first.
- 53:08Heath Reeser is up. Left-handed batter whom Beller struck out on his first appearance at the plate.
- 53:15He hits a bounding ball to York, grabs it, steps on the bag. He's throwing down to Cronin.
- 53:20And Cronin tags. Hack sliding in the second for a backhand double play.
- 53:25An easy bounder to York right at the bag. Rudy grabbed it, stepped on the bag, and whipped it to Cronin,
- 53:30putting it on to Hack as he slid for the bag, and that ends the fourth for the National Leaguers.
- 53:41They had to play that double play in reverse. And the runner at second had to be tagged.
- 53:57No run, one hit, no error. National Leaguers have the two hits that have been made.
- 54:04Neither team has scored. The American Leaguers have received the only base on balls issued.
- 54:11Ted Williams drawing one to open the second inning for the American League.
- 54:15Any changes yet?
- 54:20What about left field?
- 54:37Elliott, Bob Elliott of Pittsburgh, is playing right field for the National Leaguers now.
- 54:46And Bobby Doerr is first up for the Americans, fouls up into the stands behind third base for strike one.
- 54:52He popped the second base for the first time at bat.
- 55:05Derringer all set with a new ball. Pitches, Doerr fouls into the dirt, strike two.
- 55:21Two strikes and nothing on Doerr. Derringer waiting out there with that new ball, nods his head,
- 55:26Lopez comes out of the cross, hears the pitch, and it's socked on the ground to second baseman Frye,
- 55:31picks it up, he didn't have to move forward, and throws him out at first.
- 55:36So there's one away in the fourth.
- 55:39And Buck Travis coming up, lied to center field the first time up. Left center.
- 55:46The National League lineup at the present time is Terry Moore on left, Pete Reiser center, Bob Elliott on left,
- 55:56Donnie Myers at first, Linus Frye at second, Archie Vaughn at short, Stan Hackett third, Derringer pitching,
- 56:01and Lopez catching the first pitch. Travis, a left-hand batter, low outside. Ball one.
- 56:10And the windup for the next one. Foul, strike. Just ticked a little piece of that.
- 56:21White padding on the mask used by the National Lakers. The catcher turns around,
- 56:27he looks sort of like one of these white-faced monkeys.
- 56:31There's a drive to left center field and it looks as though it's in there for a hit.
- 56:34It is. It's going between Moore and Reiser for a two-base hit to the barrier in left field.
- 56:40365 feet away, the first American League hit. And the first extra-base hit.
- 56:47But Travis, off Washington, getting that one. With one out, Travis on second in the fourth inning, no score.
- 57:01And that was a clean double. There was no chance for either Moore or Reiser to get in front of it.
- 57:07And here comes Joe DiMaggio fouled out the third base the first time at bat.
- 57:12First pitch, inside, ball one.
- 57:23This is the first time anyone has got to be on first base.
- 57:27High, fastball, outside, ball two.
- 57:33Two balls, no strikes. Derrens are hunched at his shoulders.
- 57:37Shoes is gummed, Modsy's head to Lopez.
- 57:42Shortstop Bond playing well over toward third. DiMaggio hits a long fly to center, deep center field.
- 57:48And it's taken by Reiser after a long run, 400 feet away out there.
- 57:53And Travis sprints to third after the catch. That ball was really tight.
- 57:58Reiser scampered well over into deep right center field to haul that ball in while still going,
- 58:04at least 400 feet from the plate.
- 58:08And someone, I think in the upper deck out there, threw something down.
- 58:12I saw something pass between the ball and the direction Reiser was going,
- 58:19which is not very good sportsmanship in anybody's ball yard.
- 58:24Now they had a little huddle out around the pitcher's mound.
- 58:28Hacks the third baseman, Lopez the catcher, and Derrens are the pitcher.
- 58:32Has Ted Williams coming up to the plate.
- 58:36Theodore Walks the first time at bat.
- 58:40Long, lackey left-hander. Says he's right in the pink.
- 58:47Steps in the left-hand batter's box. Derrens' arm goes up for the pitch,
- 58:51and it's a fast ball outside, chin high for ball one.
- 58:56The wind has shifted around again and is gently blowing in from right field.
- 59:02Such a gentle step. And the motion for the next.
- 59:06Strike called. Big Paul found that outside corner with a letter high fast ball.
- 59:13One ball, one strike. Travis on third, two out on the fourth.
- 59:17No score in this ball game.
- 59:21They're shading Williams around toward right field. Derrens are pitchers.
- 59:26Williams fouls back up in the top deck.
- 59:33Up among the working press.
- 59:38And the working press are pressed for space today.
- 59:43There's a lot of them here. The count is two strikes. One ball. Williams up there. Here's the pitch.
- 59:47Williams blinds the right field.
- 59:51And right fielder Nicholson falls down the ball over his head against the barrier.
- 59:55Travis comes home for the first run of the game, a two-base hit for Williams.
- 1:00:00A line drive double for Elliott over Elliott's head.
- 1:00:04He fell down, slipped out there, and fell flat on his back.
- 1:00:08Could have had that ball had he been able to keep his feet.
- 1:00:11With a low-lying sinker shot over his head then against the barrier for a two-base hit.
- 1:00:18And the first run of this ball game is in.
- 1:00:21The American Lakers leading one to nothing.
- 1:00:26A cheap way to get a run, but the runs count.
- 1:00:31Jeff Heath is up there, left-hand batter's box. First pitch a called strike.
- 1:00:37That's a tough break for Derringer and the National Lakers when Elliott lost his footing and sat down on the grass.
- 1:00:43Strike swinging.
- 1:00:47He could have caught that ball about set time.
- 1:00:51Strike, where he goes.
- 1:00:53Two strikes and nothing on Heath. Jeff steps out of the batter's box. He's in again.
- 1:01:01Derringer waiting for him.
- 1:01:03Now Paul pitches, Heath fouls back in the net, and the count is still two strikes and nothing.
- 1:01:13The crowd is murmuring about that drive out there and the fact that Elliott fell down.
- 1:01:19He just feet shot right out from under him, sat down gently. Strike three called on Heath.
- 1:01:24Derringer laying that one right in the middle.
- 1:01:26And that ends the fourth inning.
- 1:01:29And the American Lakers take the field with a one-run advantage.
- 1:01:33One run, two hits, no error, and one left on base.
- 1:01:44Bobby Doerr, first up, grounded out on an easy chance, second to first.
- 1:01:47Prior to Myers, Savas lined a double between left and center field against the barrier out there, 360 feet.
- 1:01:57For the first American League hit of the game, a two-base hit.
- 1:02:00DiMaggio flied very deep to Reeser in right center.
- 1:02:05Williams lined to right field, a sinking line drive.
- 1:02:09Right fielder Elliott slipped in the grass, sat down, and the ball just over his head against the barrier for a two-base hit, scoring Savas for the first run of the game.
- 1:02:22And Heath then took a called third strike.
- 1:02:30So there you are, one run, two hits, no error.
- 1:02:32Each team has made two hits.
- 1:02:34And the American Lakers have the one run that's been scored.
- 1:02:38Myers, rather, first up, starting the fourth, fifth inning rolls to York for an unassisted putout.
- 1:02:53One away, and here comes Elliott.
- 1:02:57Right-handed batter.
- 1:02:59Now Bob can get back in the good graces of everybody by stocking one home run out here to make up for that sitting down in the grass business out there.
- 1:03:10Foul ball, hits Dickey on the right pole.
- 1:03:13And Bill is stepping around there, limping a bit.
- 1:03:18Strike one.
- 1:03:26One strike on Elliott.
- 1:03:29Lee's arm goes up, he pitches, a fast ball down toward third.
- 1:03:34Savas comes up with a nice stop and throws him out at first.
- 1:03:41Two away, bases empty.
- 1:03:43Archie Vaughn, the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop in this game for the National Lakers, tried to left field the first time up.
- 1:03:51Moves in there in the left-hand batter's box.
- 1:03:55Lee starts his wind-up motion.
- 1:03:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:03:58And a wide sweeping curve outside, ball one.
- 1:04:10There's the motion.
- 1:04:12Foul, bouncing up toward Leo DeRoscher, coaching at first.
- 1:04:16One strike, one ball.
- 1:04:25One strike, one ball.
- 1:04:28Two men out on the fifth.
- 1:04:30American Lakers leading one to nothing.
- 1:04:32Lee pitches a curve ball outside for ball two.
- 1:04:42It's two balls and one strike.
- 1:04:46And the motion for the next one.
- 1:04:49Foul right over our heads up here.
- 1:04:52No change in the count, two and two.
- 1:04:56Two strikes, two balls.
- 1:04:59Two men gone, bases empty.
- 1:05:05Ready to go, the arm goes up.
- 1:05:07Here's the pitch, fast ball inside, nearly hit him.
- 1:05:10Stayed up there a long while to see whether that pitch was going to break.
- 1:05:14It didn't.
- 1:05:16That high hard one inside, right under his chin.
- 1:05:18Three and two, what'll it be?
- 1:05:20There's the motion, the pitch.
- 1:05:22It's a bounding ball over the pitcher's head, coming in fast as Bobby Doerr.
- 1:05:25The throw is too late.
- 1:05:27An in field hit, a leg hit for Archie Vaughan.
- 1:05:30Slow high bounder over Lee's head.
- 1:05:33Doerr rushed in from second base, had to take it.
- 1:05:36Near the edge of the grass, coming in, and the runner beat the throw by ten feet.
- 1:05:42That's the third National League hit.
- 1:05:45We're getting a pinch hitter, I believe, for Linus Fry.
- 1:05:50Brooklyn Dodger, apparently by the uniform.
- 1:05:54Herman.
- 1:05:57Bill Herman batting for Fry.
- 1:06:01Right handed batter.
- 1:06:03Two out, one on.
- 1:06:06Curve on the outside corner.
- 1:06:08Called strike.
- 1:06:20One strike on Herman.
- 1:06:21Fast ball high.
- 1:06:22Ball one, one on one.
- 1:06:35Billy Herman, former Cub, now with the Dodgers.
- 1:06:37Lee pitches way outside.
- 1:06:39Dickie had to leap out in the left hand batter's box for that,
- 1:06:42and the ball apparently slipped out of the lefty's hand.
- 1:06:46Bill is carrying it back to him, now tosses it to him.
- 1:06:49With a word of encouragement, comes back behind the plate to count as two balls and one strike.
- 1:06:55Tying runners on first.
- 1:06:56Marky Vaughn, two men out.
- 1:06:58Billy Herman batting for Linus Fry.
- 1:07:01Lee pitches.
- 1:07:03Herman swings and misses.
- 1:07:05Strike two.
- 1:07:06Missed the fast ball that was outside.
- 1:07:08I think he was looking for a curve.
- 1:07:09Thought that would bend into him.
- 1:07:11But it didn't.
- 1:07:15Two strikes, two balls.
- 1:07:17There's the stretch, the pitch.
- 1:07:19And there goes a drive safely into center field.
- 1:07:22DiMaggio takes it on the first hop.
- 1:07:24A single for Herman.
- 1:07:26Advancing Vaughn to second.
- 1:07:28The tying runners on second.
- 1:07:31Al Lopez, the catcher coming up.
- 1:07:36That's the fourth National League hit.
- 1:07:49One hit off Beller.
- 1:07:54Free off Lee.
- 1:07:56First pitch to Lopez, a right hand batter, a little guy.
- 1:07:59High outside, ball one.
- 1:08:03Dickie carries the ball out again, has a word or two with his pitcher.
- 1:08:18Runners on second and first, one away.
- 1:08:21Now Dickie's back there again.
- 1:08:22He's out of that couch.
- 1:08:24Lee pitches and there's a bounder to Sabbath.
- 1:08:26The third grabs it up, runs over and touches the bag.
- 1:08:29Ahead of Vaughn coming in for a fourth play at third.
- 1:08:33Ending the first half of the fifth inning with no runs, two hits, no errors, two left on base.
- 1:08:54Now here we go for the recap of that inning, the fifth.
- 1:08:57Johnny Myers first up, grounded to York for an unassisted put off.
- 1:09:00Elliott grounded off third to first.
- 1:09:03Vaughn singles to door.
- 1:09:06Herman batted for fry and singles the center.
- 1:09:09Vaughn stopping at second.
- 1:09:11Lopez forced Vaughn at third.
- 1:09:16Sabbath unassisted, no run, two hits, no error, two left.
- 1:09:19Now we have a change in the umpires.
- 1:09:22There's probably a change in some of the lineups too, I don't know.
- 1:09:28Herman, who batted for fry, is now playing second base for the National League.
- 1:09:37And Bucky Walters pitching for the National League.
- 1:09:41The score is one nothing in favor of the American League.
- 1:09:45The American All-Stars coming up for their turn at bat in the fifth.
- 1:10:08Herman playing second, Walters pitching.
- 1:10:12And we'll get a change in these umpires, they'll move around.
- 1:10:15Finnelli, I believe, is coming in behind the plate.
- 1:10:21Finnelli of the National League, he's exchanging with the way it looks now with Bill Summers,
- 1:10:28who did the first four and a half innings behind the plate.
- 1:10:30Bill is going out to third, take up his position along that foul line behind third.
- 1:10:38Finnelli coming in behind the plate.
- 1:10:43Jordan taking care of the second base assignment.
- 1:10:48And Bill Grieve of the American League, the first base assignment.
- 1:10:53So there's National League umpires behind the plate and at second.
- 1:10:57American League umpires at third and first.
- 1:11:00Joe Cronin first up, face Bucky Walters, swings and misses the first pitch for strike one.
- 1:11:16And the motion for the next one.
- 1:11:18Fast ball inside.
- 1:11:23One strike, one ball.
- 1:11:29Cronin fouls up in the third deck.
- 1:11:33Strike two, two strikes, one ball.
- 1:11:36Finnelli stands off with a right-hand batter up there.
- 1:11:39Stands a bit as we're facing the diamond.
- 1:11:45Stands a bit to the left of the catcher and crotches right down with him.
- 1:11:48You really can see those pitches come in there.
- 1:11:50Another foul back upstairs.
- 1:11:53In other words, with a right-hand batter up, Finnelli, the plate umpire, is virtually between the catcher and the batter.
- 1:12:02Not out in front of the catcher, I understand, but he really gets a good look at that plate.
- 1:12:07And he's right down there with him and Cronin fouls another one high up on the roof behind the stand.
- 1:12:13Two strikes and one ball.
- 1:12:28Cronin first up facing Bucky Walters, the right-hander.
- 1:12:32Cincinnati Red, Joe fouls another one back in the screen.
- 1:12:37Passing a new ball out each time, this one goes out to Stan Hack, the third baseman, giving it a going over, then passing it back to Walters.
- 1:12:46Cronin flied to right field the first time up.
- 1:12:51Walters looks him over, begins that motion.
- 1:12:53Here she comes.
- 1:12:55Fast ball for a called third strike and Cronin lets off one yell, but quickly stops and starts over to the dugout.
- 1:13:03It looked like a pretty fair pitch to me, right in there in the inside corner of fast sidearm heave.
- 1:13:10Bob Felti for a called third strike.
- 1:13:14Rudy York coming up.
- 1:13:16Rudy flied to center field, a towering fly the first time up on the first pitch.
- 1:13:26All right, one away.
- 1:13:34York up there, strike.
- 1:13:37He says he swung.
- 1:13:39Pompaya Pennelli says he swung.
- 1:13:41Rudy says he didn't.
- 1:13:42He's out barking at Babe.
- 1:13:45Babe says it's a strike, Rudolph.
- 1:13:47It was a nice curved ball that did miss the outside corner and a bit low.
- 1:13:50It was breaking off, a nice jugg.
- 1:13:53One strike and the next pitch.
- 1:13:56Ball low.
- 1:13:59One strike, one ball.
- 1:14:01Seems like an American League crowd out here.
- 1:14:04The way they're yelling, it's a good ball game.
- 1:14:08Whoever you're for, ball two, low and inside.
- 1:14:18Two balls, one strike, one out.
- 1:14:20The ball is empty, one nothing in favor of the American Leagueers, fifth inning.
- 1:14:23York at the plate, hits the next pitch, a single in the left field.
- 1:14:28Low line drive into left, here comes the throw.
- 1:14:32The shortstop and York is on first.
- 1:14:40One man out, Rudy on first, Bill Dickey the batter.
- 1:14:45That's the third American League hit.
- 1:14:48Russell Travis, Ted Williams have doubles, York a single.
- 1:14:52Derringer worked two innings, gave up one run, two hits.
- 1:14:55Struck out one and walked none.
- 1:14:58One gone, York on first.
- 1:15:01Dickey up there in the left hand batter's box, first pitch.
- 1:15:04There's a spin going down the left field line.
- 1:15:07York is stopping at second.
- 1:15:10Dickey rounds first and now he comes back when he sees that York pulled up at second.
- 1:15:15Pretty fast feeling out there by Terry Moore and they know that Terry has a good arm also.
- 1:15:21And Artie Fletcher coaching at third, knowing Moore's arm and York's rather lack of speed.
- 1:15:29Rudy has no flash on the bases.
- 1:15:32Held him at second.
- 1:15:34Dickey had made a wide turn of first and was halfway down to second.
- 1:15:37Had York not been ahead of him, it would have been an easy double of course for Dickey.
- 1:15:41But they had to play this safe, chances are York would have been thrown out trying for third.
- 1:15:51Lee is batting for himself.
- 1:15:54Lefty Lee, the American League pitcher, bats him as he throws him, follows the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:16:01One man out, scores one nothing in favor of the American Lakers, fifth inning.
- 1:16:06York is on second, Dickey on first.
- 1:16:10Each team has now made four hits.
- 1:16:17Waters takes the stretch, there's the clutch, and the pitch, a swinging strike.
- 1:16:22Lefty went for one that was low and outside, a fast ball.
- 1:16:30Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:16:35The high stretch, the clutch, he pitches, Lee fouls right over our heads.
- 1:16:41New ball tossed in the game, count two strikes, no ball.
- 1:16:49Finnelli moving over now with a left hand batter up there.
- 1:16:52He's to the right of catcher Lopez, squats down with him to get this pitch.
- 1:16:56And Lee drives the fly ball to Reeser in left center, a nice running catch, and York is going for third.
- 1:17:03Here comes the throw, a good throw but too late, and York takes third after the catch.
- 1:17:08Dickey remaining on first.
- 1:17:10Reeser ran well over into left center for that one, a well-hit ball.
- 1:17:15Two men are off, and Bobby Doerr comes up, has popped to second base, grounded to second.
- 1:17:23Right-handed batter, Doerr of the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:17:32Two gone.
- 1:17:37Shortstop Bond playing rather deep for Bob.
- 1:17:42Walters pitches, fast ball on the inside corner, letter high for a called strike.
- 1:17:52Scores one nothing, remember, in favor of the American Lakers.
- 1:17:56Two out, two on, Doerr fouls, going into the stands out left field way, strike two.
- 1:18:05New ball tossed in, they're passing it around the infield.
- 1:18:08Lopez to Mize, Mize to Herman at second.
- 1:18:11Herman decides not to go any further with it, just tosses it back to Bucky Walters.
- 1:18:16Bucky is doing a little juggling with the rosin bag, dusting even the back of his hand.
- 1:18:21Standing there calmly, getting the sign.
- 1:18:24Lopez down on the crouch, now Al comes up, there's the clutch.
- 1:18:28Here's the pitch to Doerr, a swinging strike, and thus ends the fifth.
- 1:18:36No run, two hits, no error, two left.
- 1:18:46And that gave Walters two strikeouts in that inning.
- 1:18:49The American Lakers also made two hits.
- 1:18:52The American first up was called out on strike.
- 1:18:54York single to left.
- 1:18:56Dickey also single to left.
- 1:18:59York stopping at second.
- 1:19:01Lee hit a long fly to center fielder Reeser, who made the catch over in left center.
- 1:19:07And then York took third after the catch, and Doerr struck out to end the fifth.
- 1:19:12The score's still one nothing in favor of the American Lakers.
- 1:19:15Each team has made four hits.
- 1:19:18The American Lakers have had three left on base, the Nationals two.
- 1:19:27And it's Joe Gordon playing second base now for the American Lakers.
- 1:19:35Lou Budrow playing short.
- 1:19:39And I, of Cleveland, and I guess that's the only change.
- 1:19:43Yep.
- 1:19:45Joe Gordon playing second base, Budrow playing shortstop.
- 1:19:50Gordon of the Yankees, and Lou Budrow, the flashy shortstop of the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:19:58As the National Lakers come up in the sixth inning.
- 1:20:10First man up, sucked that first one down the line.
- 1:20:13And he's going for third, going the left field line, and he's going for two bases on that pitch.
- 1:20:19It's Bucky Walters, the pitcher.
- 1:20:26That's the way to hit him when you're pitching.
- 1:20:29The tying run on second on Walters' double.
- 1:20:33Down that left field line on the first pitch.
- 1:20:41Third double in this ball game.
- 1:20:43Walters on second with a tying run.
- 1:20:46Stan Haack coming up.
- 1:20:48Left-handed batter.
- 1:20:51Lee tows the rubber. There's the stretch.
- 1:20:54The clutch and the pitch.
- 1:20:56It's bunted toward third.
- 1:20:58Lee fields the ball, whips it to York, a sacrifice, advancing Walters to third.
- 1:21:03One man out on the tying run on third.
- 1:21:15The batter coming up for the National Lakers is Terry Moore, right-hander who has popped to third, slide to right field.
- 1:21:32He goes into a full windup.
- 1:21:34The infield playing shallow, a long fly to left.
- 1:21:37Williams backing up, takes it for the putout, and here comes Walters, streaking home with a tying run.
- 1:21:43Williams shot a nice throw in there.
- 1:21:45A perfect peg, but he had to throw clear from the barrier in left field.
- 1:21:50So it's all even, boys and girls, at one run.
- 1:21:54The base is empty and two men out in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:58Lucky Walters, Lucky Walters the pitcher for the Nationals, open with a double, took third on packed sacrifice, lead to York,
- 1:22:09then came home on Terry Moore's long lift to Williams and left.
- 1:22:14Heath Reesor is up, hits the first pitch, a high fly to right field.
- 1:22:18Jeff Heath is waiting on her, looking up at the sun.
- 1:22:20He drops it for a two-base error.
- 1:22:24Heath dropped that one for a two-base error.
- 1:22:27He was under it for plenty of time, looking up at that sun, and I guess apparently lost it at the last minute.
- 1:22:33The ball came into his glove and then popped out.
- 1:22:35The first error of the ballgame.
- 1:22:39The score tied at one run.
- 1:22:42Reesor on second, 20 miles up.
- 1:22:50Big left hand hitting first base, and the fly to center field and ground to New York.
- 1:22:56Johnny's in there swinging.
- 1:23:00Lee pitches a curve, clips the outside corner across his knees for a called strike.
- 1:23:13And the stretch for the next one.
- 1:23:15Swinging strike, going for a low one.
- 1:23:23Two strikes, no balls, Johnny Myers at the plate.
- 1:23:26Heath Reesor on second, the score tied at one run.
- 1:23:30Sixth inning of this all-star game.
- 1:23:32Lefty Lee pitches a fast ball, a little low, over the plate but a little low,
- 1:23:37and Lee was on his way to the bench, and so was Dickie.
- 1:23:39Thought he had him on that one.
- 1:23:41Pumpire Pennelly says, no, it's a ball, boys.
- 1:23:43Get back there and go to work.
- 1:23:49Two strikes, one ball.
- 1:23:51There's the clutch.
- 1:23:53The pitch.
- 1:23:54Myers hits a funny roller to third baseman Travis, comes up with the ball, whips it over to York.
- 1:23:58Johnny is out, and that ends the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:24:02And the score is tied at one run on Bucky Walters' double,
- 1:24:06opening the inning on the first pitch.
- 1:24:09Sacrificed to third by Hacks.
- 1:24:12Lee to York was the play, and then came home on Terry Moore's long high fly to Williams in deep left.
- 1:24:20Reeser then ran two bases.
- 1:24:22When Heath dropped his fly in right field,
- 1:24:24Myers ended the National League half of the inning,
- 1:24:28grounding out third to first, Travis to York.
- 1:24:33One run, one hit, one error, one left on base.
- 1:24:42Score all square at one run.
- 1:24:44The American Lakers coming up in the sixth inning.
- 1:24:47This is WWJ and W-4-5-D.
- 1:25:02Enos Slaughter playing right field for the National Lakers.
- 1:25:09Buck Travis first up for the American Lakers.
- 1:25:12First pitch.
- 1:25:13A line drive, an easy line drive, the second baseman, Billy Harmon.
- 1:25:17One out.
- 1:25:23DiMaggio coming up.
- 1:25:32Joe hit a long drive, center field, second time at bat, first time fouled out to third baseman Hacks.
- 1:25:38Leans away from a fast inside, Walters pitch for ball one.
- 1:25:48And the next one, inside and low, ball two.
- 1:25:55Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:25:58One man out in the sixth.
- 1:25:59The score tied at one run.
- 1:26:00DiMaggio at the plate.
- 1:26:02Joe takes a called strike, started the swing, let it go.
- 1:26:06It was down around his knees and it's a called strike.
- 1:26:13Walters starts his wind up, he pitches inside.
- 1:26:24Buckie turns around to his back to the plate, rubbing that ball a bit.
- 1:26:28Satisfied with it now, his arm goes up.
- 1:26:31Here's the pitch.
- 1:26:33Ball four.
- 1:26:34Almost a wild pitch, nearly got past Lopez and DiMaggio walks.
- 1:26:41First base on balls off Walters and the second base on balls issued in this game.
- 1:26:48Whitlow Wyatt walked one, Derringer walked none, Feller and Lee have walked none.
- 1:26:54Williams coming up.
- 1:26:56DiMaggio on first.
- 1:26:58Williams doubled the first time or the second time at bat drove in Travis for the lone American League run.
- 1:27:03Ball one outside to this left-hander.
- 1:27:13And the stretch for the next one.
- 1:27:16Williams fouls to Mervin Shea coaching at first.
- 1:27:19Took it on the first pop, strike one, ball one.
- 1:27:31One ball, one strike.
- 1:27:36The stretch, the clutch, and the pitch.
- 1:27:40Ball two, it was fast and outside.
- 1:27:43Fouled belt high.
- 1:27:45Lopez all set, cocking his arm for a throw should DiMaggio break for second.
- 1:27:50Joe was on first, one out, the score tied at one run.
- 1:27:53This is the sixth inning.
- 1:27:56Walters is set, he pitches.
- 1:27:58Williams flies to center fielder Reeser.
- 1:28:02Pete takes it for the put out and DiMaggio hustles back from down around second.
- 1:28:07Two away.
- 1:28:11Jeff Heath coming up.
- 1:28:14Grounded to third and struck out.
- 1:28:21Grounded to second rather and struck out.
- 1:28:23He hit into a double play the first time up. Second time up was called out on strike.
- 1:28:28Bucky takes his stretch, he's ready, he pitches to this left-hander.
- 1:28:31A fast ball high and outside, ball one.
- 1:28:42And the next pitch.
- 1:28:43In the dirt, nice picking by Al Lopez, the catcher, digging that one right out of the dirt,
- 1:28:48causing the dust to blow all over Pennelly's nice blue uniform.
- 1:28:56Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:29:02Slaughter playing Heath very deep out there in right field.
- 1:29:04Reeser playing dead away in center field.
- 1:29:06Here's the pitch, Jeff swings and misses, there's a throw down to first base.
- 1:29:11And DiMaggio gets back safely.
- 1:29:13Maia's taking the peg in front of the bag.
- 1:29:16He had a big lead that time with a count, two balls.
- 1:29:20Looked as though the old hit and run was on there, but Heath missed.
- 1:29:24Two balls, one strike.
- 1:29:27And the stretch for the next one.
- 1:29:29Heath fouls out left field way, Hack is going for it, I don't think he can get to it.
- 1:29:34Nope, the ball drops in the ground.
- 1:29:36Those of you familiar with Briggs Stadium drops out there in the Tiger bullpen.
- 1:29:42Heath picked it up and backhanded it into the crowd for a souvenir with Bill Summers right beside him.
- 1:29:49Giving Hack quite a round of applause for that friendly gesture.
- 1:29:56I remember a day when Hack was on third and it didn't look like a friendly gesture out here
- 1:30:01when Tommy Bridges had to go to work and how he did that day in that World Series.
- 1:30:05Two and two, the count on Heath, the pitch misses the outside corner.
- 1:30:10Ball three, three and two.
- 1:30:16Two men out on Medwick on, on DiMaggio on first.
- 1:30:23There goes Joe, here's the pitch outside, ball four.
- 1:30:28Heath rambles down the first, second base on balls off waters in this inning.
- 1:30:33DiMaggio moves to second, two men are out.
- 1:30:37And Lou Budroll who has just replaced Croninot shortstop.
- 1:30:42The Cleveland flashy shortstop is in there, bats them right handed.
- 1:30:53Lou, very popular around here, I guess all over the circuit, a grand kid and a great ball player.
- 1:30:58First pitch low, ball one.
- 1:31:08Two men on, two men out, DiMaggio on second, Heath on first.
- 1:31:12Walters pitches high, ball two.
- 1:31:16Two balls, no strike.
- 1:31:27Lopez carries the ball halfway out to Walters.
- 1:31:30Now he's tossing it to him.
- 1:31:34Scored tight at one run, sixth inning, two men out.
- 1:31:38Runners on second and first.
- 1:31:42Budroll keeps waving that bat, he's in that crouch.
- 1:31:45Walters pitches and Lou lines a single over second, a line drive in the center field.
- 1:31:50Then it's missed by Reeser trying to pick it up on the dead run.
- 1:31:53DiMaggio has scored and Heath is stopping at third.
- 1:31:59Art Fletcher held Heath at third.
- 1:32:02Budroll went all the way to second when Reeser trying for a one hand pick up of this line drive in center field.
- 1:32:08Overran the ball and it permitted Budroll to take second.
- 1:32:14Scored as a single and an error for Reeser.
- 1:32:16DiMaggio coming home on the hit.
- 1:32:19The run batted in for Lou and Heath pulled up at third.
- 1:32:23The score is 2-1 in favor of the American Lakers.
- 1:32:26Rudy York coming to the plate.
- 1:32:28York has one hit, two times at bat.
- 1:32:31Single to left.
- 1:32:32Walters pitches a high, fast one inside for ball one.
- 1:32:44And the next one.
- 1:32:45Backs him away with another high, fast one inside. Ball two.
- 1:32:50Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:32:55Two men out, second and third occupied.
- 1:32:58Walters using a full wind up.
- 1:33:00He's backed Rudy away from the plate with a couple of pitches.
- 1:33:03Now his arm goes up for the next one.
- 1:33:06York swings at a high curve. Strike one.
- 1:33:11Two balls, one strike.
- 1:33:13Bucky shakes himself out there on the slab.
- 1:33:16Glances over toward third.
- 1:33:18Begins his wind up.
- 1:33:19The pitch and Rudy hits a long high fly.
- 1:33:22The left field. Reeser is under it and takes it for the out.
- 1:33:27Heath coming over from center field into left.
- 1:33:29Taking the ball about 350 feet away from the plate.
- 1:33:32Plenty high in the air.
- 1:33:34Not enough carry against that wind.
- 1:33:36That ends the sixth inning with one run.
- 1:33:42One hit.
- 1:33:45One error.
- 1:33:46And two left on base.
- 1:33:50Travis, first up.
- 1:33:52Line to second baseman Herman.
- 1:33:54DiMaggio walked.
- 1:33:56Williams, fly to Reeser in center.
- 1:34:00Heath also walked.
- 1:34:02Budrill lined a single over second in the center field.
- 1:34:05Scoring DiMaggio.
- 1:34:07Advancing Heath.
- 1:34:10To third. Heath took third and Budrill second when Reeser fumbled a hit.
- 1:34:17Heath being charged with an error.
- 1:34:19Then York.
- 1:34:21Slide high to Reeser.
- 1:34:24For the third out.
- 1:34:26Sid Hudson. Big right hander.
- 1:34:29Now pitching.
- 1:34:31Jimmy Fox of Boston.
- 1:34:33Playing first base.
- 1:34:35Dominic DiMaggio of the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:34:38Playing right field for the American Lakers.
- 1:34:43And this is the first time the two DiMaggios have played together since they came up in organized ball.
- 1:34:55We hope they don't quarrel out there right in center field.
- 1:35:04Going into the seventh inning. Scoring out 2-1 in favor.
- 1:35:09For the American Lakers.
- 1:35:11Now we get these changes.
- 1:35:22Hudson starts his windup. He's a fastball pitcher and that's hit right back into left field for a single.
- 1:35:29Fumbled by Williams. He falls down, comes up again and he goes an extra base.
- 1:35:33Archie Vaughn.
- 1:35:38Enos Slaughter, first man up.
- 1:35:42For the National Lakers. Pickled that first pitch of Sid Hudson.
- 1:35:47For the Washington Senators, a single in the left.
- 1:35:50Then when Williams slipped out there and fell down, Slaughter took an extra base on the error.
- 1:35:56Hanging runners again on second. Nobody out.
- 1:35:59Archie Vaughn coming up. Left handed batter.
- 1:36:04Woodrow keeping the runner close to second.
- 1:36:07And just as Hudson was ready to pitch, Vaughn playing a little deep baseball there, backed out of the batter's box.
- 1:36:16Bill Dickey has gone out with the ball to talk to Sid.
- 1:36:20It's the kids' big moment.
- 1:36:34Now the conference is broken up.
- 1:36:38We're set to go. There's the stretch. And the pitch. Curveball inside low. Ball one.
- 1:36:55One ball. No strikes. Nobody out. Slaughter on second.
- 1:36:59There's a drive to right field. It's carrying high up and it's a home run.
- 1:37:03The first home run of the ball game. Here comes some straw hats.
- 1:37:08And it's Archie Vaughn of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:37:11Tomoring in the upper deck of the right field stands.
- 1:37:14Over 315 feet away.
- 1:37:17And putting the National Lakers back in the lead.
- 1:37:20As he throws Enos Slaughter across ahead of him.
- 1:37:24It's now 3-2 in favor of the National League and nobody out in the seventh inning.
- 1:37:31It's going to really tickle that Hudson fast pitch.
- 1:37:34Riding high up in there.
- 1:37:41This brings up Billy Harmon.
- 1:37:47He batted for Fry in the fifth and singled and replaced Fry at second.
- 1:37:52Socks a fast one down the third base line.
- 1:37:54Rolling out into the left field corner. There's an extra base hit.
- 1:37:58Being grabbed by one of the fans reaching out of the stands out there.
- 1:38:02A two base hit.
- 1:38:05And these National Lakers seem to care very kindly for the pitching.
- 1:38:13Flipped in here by Sid Hudson.
- 1:38:15A single, a home run and double. The first three men to face him.
- 1:38:19They're out in the seventh.
- 1:38:30Jimmy Foxx playing first base now goes over and talks to Hudson.
- 1:38:35Coming into the batter's box. Right hand hitting catcher Al Lopez.
- 1:38:40Sid pitches from the shoulder. Al Buntz out in front of the plate.
- 1:38:43Dickie grabs it up and throws to Gordon covering first for the put out a sacrifice hit.
- 1:38:56And Bucky Waters. His turn to bat.
- 1:39:00He did all right the only time he's been up by talking a double down the left field line.
- 1:39:06I don't know whether he, no he's not going to hit.
- 1:39:08Somebody else coming up a Brooklyn Dodger.
- 1:39:12Leo DeRosier has a little contact with him.
- 1:39:20Number six it's Joe Ducky, Wucky Medwick.
- 1:39:25Ducky Medwick batting for Waters.
- 1:39:30Ducky had fun out here one time in the World Series.
- 1:39:34When a member of the cards.
- 1:39:36First pitch right handed batter breaks over for a called strike.
- 1:39:50And the next one.
- 1:39:52A sock on the ground, a shortstop.
- 1:39:54Budrow bluffs the runner back to third then rifles the ball over to Foxx.
- 1:39:58Retiring Medwick a swell play by Lou Budrow at Cleveland shortstop.
- 1:40:07He held Herman on third and then whips the ball over to Foxx ahead of the runner for the second out.
- 1:40:20Dan Hack coming up left handed batter with one hit and two official times at bat.
- 1:40:26Herman on third the score three two in favor of the National Lakers seventh inning.
- 1:40:31Hudson starts his wind up pitches a fast ball low ball one.
- 1:40:44Dicky down there in the crouch calls for the pitch now he's straightening up.
- 1:40:48Sid delivers a curve it's bunted a surprise bunt but it's foul over in the Tiger dugout.
- 1:40:54Last where the American Lakers are huddling today behind third base and the count on Hack is one and one.
- 1:41:01Score is three two in favor of the National League seventh inning.
- 1:41:10One strike one ball that gets the sign he starts his wind up.
- 1:41:14He pitches high over Hacks head fastball and plenty fast.
- 1:41:21So the count is two balls and one strike the rocher coaching it first says now you're ready kid.
- 1:41:26Pick him up meaning stock one out there and drive in this runner on third Billy Herman.
- 1:41:33There's the motion the pitch right in there curveball Belfi for a called strike.
- 1:41:44Count is two and two.
- 1:41:46Two men out and Herman on third.
- 1:41:49Hudson gets the sign he starts his motion he pitches a fast curve outside ball three and strike two.
- 1:42:02Three balls two strikes the motion and the pitch is inside a little high for ball four.
- 1:42:11Hack walks down the first and this brings Terry Moore to the plate.
- 1:42:19Terry has popped the shortstop slide to right and a long fly to left field drove in the first National League run in that sixth inning.
- 1:42:30Right handed batter runners on first and third more swings and misses the first pitch Hudson dropping a curve in there pretty low.
- 1:42:38It's waiting around now he's all set.
- 1:42:51Mickey out of the crowd here's the pitch foul pop deck out first base way rolling around on the roof strike two two strikes no ball.
- 1:43:14No ball thoughts in there Hudson pitches a curve outside ball one.
- 1:43:22The count is two and one.
- 1:43:24Herman on third hack on first more at the plate.
- 1:43:27There's the pitch and he swings and misses a fast from the inside close to his thumbs to strike three.
- 1:43:35So that ends the seventh inning for the national leaguers in which they jumped in the lead by scoring two runs made three hits.
- 1:43:44Had two men left on base and the American leaguers made one error started out with Enos Slaughter facing Sid Hudson the third American League pitcher single to left on the first pitch and took an extra base when Williams fumbled a hit.
- 1:44:01Archie Vaughn homered in the upper deck of the right field stands calling behind slaughter to put the national leaguers in the lead three to two.
- 1:44:12Herman doubled down the left field line Lopez sacrificing the third.
- 1:44:18Dickie to Gordon who covered first medway battered for Walters grounded out short to first what role the shortstop holding Herman on third while throwing the runner up.
- 1:44:33What and more struck out. Now we have the fourth National League pitcher coming in. Todd Patel of Chicago.
- 1:44:48The Chicago Cubs. Water. Worked two innings gave up three hits one run.
- 1:45:09Look out to walk to. That's always pitching for the Chicago Cubs pitching Harry Danning of the New York Giants now catching for the national leaguers and Charlie Keller of the New York Yankees.
- 1:45:30Will undoubtedly bat after Bill Dickie bat for the pitcher Hudson. Dickie is first up. Bill has one hit and two times a bat and Keller is waiting here in the batter's ring strike called on Dickie Paso a right hander playing that one over the outside corner to Bill.
- 1:45:48Score three two in favor of the National League seventh inning. Todd pitches high enough that football one one and one.
- 1:46:01Flexes his arm a bit and pitches over that outside corner knee high to Dickie for the call strike two strikes and one ball.
- 1:46:21Two and one. There's the wind up the pitch outside ball to two and two Harry the horse behind the plate.
- 1:46:32Big Harry Danning. Good catcher good hitter. Two and two the count on Dickie. A couple of pretty good catchers right there at the plate now.
- 1:46:43Dickie fouls into the dirt. Right on top of that pitch and I think it hit Bill on the toes have bounced up. He's leaning on the bat out there.
- 1:46:54The second time he's been hit on that right foot.
- 1:46:59Limping around as he comes slowly back to the left hand batter's box.
- 1:47:08Bill time is up as he's standing there talking to umpire babe finale.
- 1:47:18All right I guess we're set he's back in there the count two and two.
- 1:47:23Herman is playing very deep for Dickie way out on the grass second base position.
- 1:47:28That's all starts his wind up he pitches Dickie line third baseman Hacks and going in the air and spitting that ball as he was riding over behind third base.
- 1:47:40Robbing Dickie of a two base hit and Charlie Keller will bat for Hudson.
- 1:47:46Charlie Keller of the New York Yankees left handed batter now batting for Sid Hudson.
- 1:47:57Hudson worked one inning.
- 1:48:03Gave up two runs.
- 1:48:06Three hits.
- 1:48:09Walk none walk one.
- 1:48:11Look out one.
- 1:48:29One man out base is empty.
- 1:48:31Strike two call finale raising his right arm at that's all found the outside corner around the batter's knees.
- 1:48:42Two strikes and nothing on Charlie batting for Hudson.
- 1:48:46Standing calls for the next pitch here it comes.
- 1:48:49Ball a little high outside two strikes one ball.
- 1:49:03And the wind up here's the pitch Keller fouls back.
- 1:49:12But so getting a new ball gives it a going over.
- 1:49:19Wipes his pitching hand on his trousers.
- 1:49:23Those pretty light blue trousers with the white socks where that road uniform now he's in motion here's the pitch outside fastball up around the batter's eyes ball to two and two.
- 1:49:37And the score is three to in favor the national Lakers seventh inning with one man out base is empty.
- 1:49:49So taking plenty of time he does a lot of fiddling around now he's on the rubber and the arm goes up for the pitch it's coming and Keller struck out swinging going for the fastball on the outside corner down around his knees.
- 1:50:01Joe Gordon.
- 1:50:04New York Yankees now playing second base and coming to bat for the first time in this game.
- 1:50:18Who gone in the seventh Joe steps up in that right hand batter's box he swings and misses a high fast pitch for strike one.
- 1:50:34One strike on Joseph and the next one little high outside for Paul one one and one.
- 1:50:49One strike one ball.
- 1:50:52I thought taking his time to out got a one run lead to protect.
- 1:50:56He pitches low and inside the Gordon ball to.
- 1:51:03Two balls and one strike.
- 1:51:08Clear out against the screen and left field nearly against the screen is Terry Moore left fielder.
- 1:51:15He knows Gordon hits them out that way when he hits them and he filed that pitch off for strike two and account is two and two.
- 1:51:24Two strikes two balls two out bases empty three two in favor of the National League.
- 1:51:33National League has made eight hits they're supposed to be the club without the power while the American League has made five and there's a grounder to shortstop Archie Vaughan comes up with it pegs it to my eyes at first and Gordon is out and that ends the seven.
- 1:51:48No run.
- 1:51:50No hit.
- 1:51:52No error three up and three away.
- 1:51:54Dickie line to hack third baseman for a leaping one hand catch Keller batted for Hudson and struck out and Gordon grounded out short to first.
- 1:52:05Now we get the land they fought.
- 1:52:10American League pitcher and it looks like lefty Edgar Smith.
- 1:52:16The White Sox Frankie Hayes of the Philadelphia Athletics going behind the plate.
- 1:52:38Edgar Smith left hander used to be with the Philadelphia Athletics before going to Jimmy Dyches Chicago Club and Hayes with his battery mate there.
- 1:52:51So they ought to have a whole lot of trouble getting signs fixed up.
- 1:53:12The score is three to in favor of the National League this is WWJ and W forty five D Detroit bringing you this nine 12 star classic from Briggs Stadium.
- 1:53:26National League is out in front three to two going into the eighth inning first man up will be Pete Reiser.
- 1:53:35The Brooklyn Dodgers better be that no hit three times at bat.
- 1:53:43He's a leading National League hitter.
- 1:53:50Many a left hander right or a right hand batter.
- 1:53:54It's first pitch is popped up into short left field but going out for it falls down and the ball drops foul.
- 1:54:02There's been a good deal of skidding around in this field today on account of the rain yesterday.
- 1:54:09The couple of heavy showers we had the infield is in excellent shape but apparently the outfield is a little bit skiddy because earlier in the game if you've been in all the day you'll remember that right fielder Bill Nicholson of the National League fell down and right out there causing a line drive at Ted Williams.
- 1:54:31The skid over his head for a two base not Ted Williams has also fallen in left field and Budrow would have made a catch of this foul ball had he not slipped and fallen.
- 1:54:43Count is one and one on research.
- 1:54:46Hayes comes out of the crouch Smith pitches research swings at a ball that hit the dirt in front of the plate. That's how much drop Smitty had on that one strike to strike one ball three two in favor of the National League eighth inning.
- 1:55:08Oh kick that one into the dirt. Another drop that Smith was throwing in there. Reacher got just a little bit of it on the end of his bat.
- 1:55:24First man up in the eighth left handed batter strike called on research.
- 1:55:30Smith finding the outside corner with a fast pitch between the knees and the belt.
- 1:55:49The man coming up is Johnny Meyers left hand batting first baseman foul takes the first pitch strike one foul that right in the Hayes.
- 1:56:02And the arm goes up for the next one.
- 1:56:05Slow curve failed to come over on a little bit inside ball one one and one.
- 1:56:14One strike one ball. There's the motion. My lines to right field it's going safely against the barrier bouncing away being chased out there but Dominic DiMaggio having trouble picking it up and it goes for a two base hit.
- 1:56:29Dominic broke toward center field as my swamp.
- 1:56:33But Johnny pulled the ball up toward the foul line on the opposite way from which he was going.
- 1:56:39For the time he could get back the ball was passed him against the barrier playing it on the rebound. He had trouble picking it up.
- 1:56:46It's a two base hit for Johnny.
- 1:56:49One man out. My zone second Enos Slaughter.
- 1:56:53Who opened against Hudson in the last inning and single.
- 1:56:57Took an extra base when Williams fumbled moves into the left hand batter's box Smith pitches a curve low and outside down in the dirt out in the right hand batter's box for ball one.
- 1:57:17That's the fourth to base hit my with the fourth to bagger.
- 1:57:22One has a home run that accounts for the extra base hit.
- 1:57:31One ball account to slaughter pays out of the crouch holding the myth for Smitty to see Smith pitches a beautiful curve starts at the batter.
- 1:57:38He backs away a little breaks over the plate felt high for a call strike.
- 1:57:46One man out and my zone second.
- 1:57:51But he takes a stretch. He pitches a foul ball back into the stands bounces down the screen strike two on slaughter and it's two strikes and one ball.
- 1:58:07Leo de Rocher coaching at first giving advice to Johnny Myers the runner on second.
- 1:58:13Smitty comes up to the stretch down to the clutch he pitches strike three called and the Rochers talk to my eyes to watch a ball hit out there meaning left field didn't mean much there.
- 1:58:27The slaughter took that pitch for a call third strike and here comes our people on getting a big hand from the crowd.
- 1:58:34The darkies home run off said Hudson in the seventh inning with water on base put the national leaguers back in the put them in the lead two to three and they're still in there.
- 1:58:48First pitch to our left hand batter ball one.
- 1:59:03One ball account.
- 1:59:06Smitty looks him over taking plenty of time. Now there's the stretch he comes down he pitches and there's another drive that looks as though it's his second home run it is it's up in the upper deck again.
- 1:59:18Pickling that one in the upper deck of the right field stand to home runs for Archie Vaughn in this ballgame.
- 1:59:25And that puts the national leaguers out in front by two more runs to make it five to in favor of the older circuit.
- 1:59:34He really that ball was hit harder than the first hit further down toward center field.
- 1:59:40But up in the stands I would say about 350 feet away the upper deck of the right field.
- 1:59:46And the home runs in succession for Archie Vaughn each with a man on base. That's the time to get them to our faces empty now.
- 1:59:57Billy Herman up that to hit the single and double in this many times that that first pitch ball on a right handed batter.
- 2:00:06Proud is still murmuring over Vaughn's second homer a smash on the ground that Jimmy Fox gives it the chest then tosses to Smith Smith misses the bag and umpire grieve at first base rules the runner safe.
- 2:00:23Smith is charged with the boot a bounding ball down toward second Jimmy Fox the first baseman went down and gave it the chest. In other words blocked it with his chest.
- 2:00:36Picked it up. Tossed to Smith covering the bag. But he got the throw in time but his foot missed the bag ahead of the runner.
- 2:00:43Herman is on first on Smith's error. Two men out. Harry Danning the catcher making his first appearance at the plate right handed batter takes the first pitch a fast one on the outside corner knee high for a called strike.
- 2:01:08And the clutch for the next fast one outside ball one one and one.
- 2:01:15Gorgeous five to in favor of the National League eighth inning two men out. Herman on first. Smitty pitches low ball to two balls one strike.
- 2:01:43Two and one. Herman takes a lead Smith pitches Danning drops a fly ball out right field way. Joe Gordon goes out for it and takes his over his shoulder for the put out second baseman Gordon running out of the short right.
- 2:01:56Take that over his shoulder for the put out that ends the eight for the national league. And they've got a three run lead on the Americans.
- 2:02:05The American League comes to bat in the eight.
- 2:02:12Two runs.
- 2:02:15Two hits.
- 2:02:17One error. One left.
- 2:02:20With Edgar Smith left hander pitching for the American League.
- 2:02:24Reaser was called out on strike. Mize doubled to right. Slaughter was called out on strike. Vaughn duplicated his hit of the previous inning by hitting a home run up in the right field pavilion scoring behind Mize.
- 2:02:42Herman was safe at first when Smith missed the toss from Fox for the play and Danning popped to Gordon for the third out.
- 2:02:59McCormick is playing first base for the National League McCormick of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:03:17Frankie Vaughn's two home runs in this all star game goes just a little bit better than any of the his predecessors. Lou Gehrig and Frankie Frisch were the only ones to hit more than one home run in the all star games in which they participated.
- 2:03:38Frisch getting one in thirty three and thirty four Gehrig making one in thirty six and thirty seven Vaughn got his in the same game.
- 2:03:53Up at the dish is Cecil Travis. Count us one and one.
- 2:03:59Buck has had one hit three times at bat a two base hit. He cracks a high fly foul over near the Tiger dugout toward third and it's taken by Stan Hack for the put out the National League is third baseman.
- 2:04:14Harry Danning the catcher was right over there with him. One out in the eighth.
- 2:04:24Joe DiMaggio coming up Joe has gone hit list he walked once slide deep to right center field and followed up the third base.
- 2:04:37Rod Pesso right hander of the Chicago Cubs now pitching and lays a fastball in their letter high for a called strike.
- 2:04:55One strike on the mark the score is five to in favor of the National League is Joe fouls a pitch that will go through a runway in the second deck coming up there looks like a souvenir ball but went right down through one of the runways and the ball was traveling pretty fast.
- 2:05:13Maybe the good thing it did might have hurt someone who strikes and nothing. So getting a new ball from umpire finale guys his hand blows on the meat hand now rubs it dry boys are out there parking it up.
- 2:05:28That National League team feels pretty cocky right now. Rerun lead in the eighth inning. So starts his windup. Here's the pitch DiMaggio drives the left center field it's dropping safely and getting past research against the barrier to the 400 foot mark and DiMaggio pulls up at second a double between center fielder research and left fielder Terry Moore.
- 2:05:56Two base hit for the mod. This game doesn't count however in the consecutive game record.
- 2:06:0854,674.
- 2:06:27This ball little low ball one the official attendance just came in. I don't know whether you heard it or not but it's 54,674. Nice crowd but not the largest crowd that's been in this ballpark.
- 2:06:42On pitchers a curve ball that fails to find the plate for ball to broke a little inside the Williams DiMaggio on second one man out in the eighth five to in favor of the National League.
- 2:07:00There's the clutch.
- 2:07:02Foul into the dirt right at the batter's feet that going for a low breaking pitch just got on top of it and the count is two balls one strike.
- 2:07:13Wind freshening up a bit and blowing from the left field corner toward the right field corner coming more in just right in toward the plate from left field.
- 2:07:23Beautiful day for this ballgame very high sky now no clouds up there tough on the outfielders. So pitches Williams fouls another one back right to an account is two and two.
- 2:07:40Two strikes two balls.
- 2:07:50That's so taking plenty of time out there.
- 2:07:53He knows he has a kid up there that wants to wear the car out of this pitch.
- 2:07:57Now he said, there's the clutch he pitches and Williams is called out on strike on a knee high pit.
- 2:08:07Two men out.
- 2:08:09Dominic DiMaggio coming up.
- 2:08:11Now here's brother and brother Joe on second Dom at the plate.
- 2:08:15Both of them right hand batters Joe a whole lot bigger than his brother both of them take about the same wide stance at the plate.
- 2:08:29Two men out.
- 2:08:31Five two in favor of the National League is in the eighth inning.
- 2:08:36There's the clutch.
- 2:08:37So pitches Dominic fouls back up in the screen. Strike one.
- 2:08:55One strike on Dominic.
- 2:08:59So looking at this new ball examining it very carefully and I seem satisfied with it.
- 2:09:04He's a cagey pitcher out there. He takes his time. He goes through a lot of motion.
- 2:09:07Now he's ready and Dominic drives a hit in the right field.
- 2:09:10Here comes Joe coming home.
- 2:09:12Joe DiMaggio scoring from second on brother Dominic's line single the right center.
- 2:09:23The score is now five three.
- 2:09:28In favor of the National League.
- 2:09:31Two out Dominic DiMaggio on first.
- 2:09:35Lou Budrow coming up.
- 2:09:37Lou batted in a run in the sixth inning the only time he's been at bat.
- 2:09:51So takes his stance. There's the clutch the pitch a very high fast one over the batter's head ball one.
- 2:10:12Throw to first trying to nip the runner off nothing doing as Budrow took a cut at that pitch.
- 2:10:17The count is one and one. Danning snapped the ball down to McCormick at first.
- 2:10:22But Dominic DiMaggio got back safely.
- 2:10:25But wrote the plate with a count one and one two out in the eighth.
- 2:10:29So pitches and budrow singles through the box and over second.
- 2:10:33Little Tom is going to third as Reeser fumbles and Budrow takes second.
- 2:10:40Reeser has looked bad on a couple of ground hit.
- 2:10:43And Dominic DiMaggio for site that Reeser would have fumbled that when he did come all the way home.
- 2:10:51He had already stopped at second when Pete fumbled a bit.
- 2:10:54Then he headed for third and Fodder went on to second.
- 2:10:58Jimmy Fox is at the plate.
- 2:11:01The tying runs are on second and third.
- 2:11:03Two men are out in the eighth inning and this is Fox's first time to bat.
- 2:11:09Budrow has done very nicely with two hits and two times at bat.
- 2:11:14Go in a run the first time.
- 2:11:16Fox swings at a high fast inside pitch for strike one.
- 2:11:22And the crowd is a bit noisy right now.
- 2:11:27I hope I'm getting this into the microphone.
- 2:11:30All right Frank.
- 2:11:31One strike on Fox.
- 2:11:33Claude Wines.
- 2:11:34Jimmy swings.
- 2:11:35Strike two.
- 2:11:37Fox is really trying to belt that ball out of the lot.
- 2:11:41Two strikes and nothing.
- 2:11:48Five-three in favor of the National Lakers.
- 2:11:51Dominic DiMaggio on third.
- 2:11:53Lou Budrow on second.
- 2:11:54Two strikes on Fox.
- 2:11:56Jimmy struck out on a high one.
- 2:11:58I saw getting him on three pitches.
- 2:12:00He went for all three of them.
- 2:12:01That ends the eighth with one run.
- 2:12:04Three hits.
- 2:12:05One error.
- 2:12:06Two left on base.
- 2:12:10Travis first up.
- 2:12:13Fouled out to third baseman hack.
- 2:12:16Joe DiMaggio doubled to right center.
- 2:12:19Ted Williams called out on strike.
- 2:12:22Dominic DiMaggio doubled to right.
- 2:12:25Scoring brother Joseph.
- 2:12:27Budrow single to center.
- 2:12:30And when Reeser fumbled a hit, DiMaggio went to third.
- 2:12:34Budrow second on the error.
- 2:12:36Fox struck out on three pitches.
- 2:12:39The score now five-three in favor of the National Lakers.
- 2:12:43Paso first up in the ninth getting a fine hand from the crowd.
- 2:12:49He took care of a tough batter there when he had to.
- 2:13:00Bud bats them as he throws them right-handed.
- 2:13:02Eddie Smith out there on the hill left-hander.
- 2:13:05The fourth National League pitcher to work.
- 2:13:09Each team has used four pitchers.
- 2:13:11And the first pitch is a called strike on Paso.
- 2:13:13And incidentally Mr. Paso is quite a hitter.
- 2:13:16He has banged out several home runs for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:13:19When it meant a lot while he was in there pitching.
- 2:13:22Takes the next one outside.
- 2:13:24Takes a look at it rather.
- 2:13:25Ball one. One and one.
- 2:13:28National Lakers have made ten hits so far.
- 2:13:30The American League, eight.
- 2:13:36The National League is leading by the same margin of runs.
- 2:13:38Two runs. It's five-three.
- 2:13:41Paso hits a drive to right field.
- 2:13:43Dominic DiMaggio is waiting for it and takes it for the put out.
- 2:13:47One away.
- 2:13:52Stan Hack is next.
- 2:13:54One hit.
- 2:13:56Three times at bat.
- 2:13:58Cookie Lavagetto is going to bat for Hack.
- 2:14:02Cookie Lavagetto of the Brooklyn Dodgers batting for Hack.
- 2:14:06He's a right-hander batter.
- 2:14:12Right name Harry but they all call him Cookie.
- 2:14:17He's a third baseman.
- 2:14:19First pitch. Fouls behind.
- 2:14:22Coming back for it is Hayes but the ball is in the stands.
- 2:14:26Bouncing right around down there where Virginia is.
- 2:14:29He almost got hit on Hayes.
- 2:14:31Been bad for the ball.
- 2:14:33Smithy gets a new ball from umpire Pennelly.
- 2:14:36He's in there looking for the sign.
- 2:14:37Hayes still in the crouch.
- 2:14:38Here's the pitch.
- 2:14:39Cookie socks a fast one to Jimmy Fox.
- 2:14:41A swell stop.
- 2:14:42He's tossing to Smith and this time Smith gets his hoof on the bag out there to retire the runner.
- 2:14:48A nice play by Jimmy Fox, the first baseman.
- 2:14:51A hard hit smash.
- 2:14:53Curving foul.
- 2:14:54Jim had to go for it fast.
- 2:14:56Made the stop.
- 2:14:57Smith hurried over, took the toss, and there's two away.
- 2:15:04Next, Terry Moore.
- 2:15:06Left fielder who has gone hitless in four times at bat.
- 2:15:09Right-handed batter.
- 2:15:10First pitch.
- 2:15:12Fast ball in there.
- 2:15:13Belt high for a called strike.
- 2:15:22And the next one, a high foul up first base way.
- 2:15:25Fox shielding his eyes from the sun with his glove is under it and takes it.
- 2:15:29And that ends the ninth for the National Leaguers.
- 2:15:33Now the American Leaguers come in facing a two-run deficit.
- 2:15:38It's five-three in favor of the National League.
- 2:15:43Smith got by the ninth inning retiring the side in order.
- 2:15:46No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 2:15:49Pass-over flag to Dominic DiMaggio and right.
- 2:15:53Lavagetto batted for Hack.
- 2:15:56Fox made a swell play on his fast bounder and tossed to Smith for the outtick first.
- 2:16:00And Moore fouled to Fox.
- 2:16:05Lavagetto will play third, replacing Hack.
- 2:16:08We've got a new shortstop in there.
- 2:16:10Eddie Miller of the Boston Bees playing shortstop for the National Leaguers.
- 2:16:17Now I guess that about takes care of the changes.
- 2:16:21Frankie Hayes will be the first batter-up for the American League.
- 2:16:29Markey Vaughn can well afford to rest in this ninth inning.
- 2:16:33He did all right.
- 2:16:35He only made three hits, two of them home runs.
- 2:16:37He drove in four of the five runs scored by the National Leaguers.
- 2:16:42Eddie Miller of Boston, number seven, playing shortstop.
- 2:16:48Lavagetto of Brooklyn, number five, playing 14 for the National League.
- 2:16:55That's the only changes.
- 2:16:57Lavagetto playing third, Eddie Miller playing short.
- 2:16:59First pitch to Hayes, a called strike.
- 2:17:02Aspaso broke it on the inside corner to this right-hand batter.
- 2:17:08This is Frank's first time at the plate.
- 2:17:13And the next one is hit to a high fly in short center field.
- 2:17:17There's a gang of them out there for it.
- 2:17:19And second baseman takes it for the putout.
- 2:17:25A very high fly in short center field.
- 2:17:29Three of them out there for it.
- 2:17:31And second baseman, Herman, took it for the putout.
- 2:17:35And Paso, all he has to do is get two more to win this ballgame for the National Leaguers.
- 2:17:41Here's a pinch hitter.
- 2:17:44Ken Keltner batting for Smith.
- 2:17:50Ken Keltner of the Cleveland Indians batting for Smith.
- 2:17:53Takes the first pitch on the outside corner, letter high, for a called strike.
- 2:18:02Right-handed batter, two out, five-three in favor of the National League.
- 2:18:07The pitch, Keltner smashes to shortstop.
- 2:18:10Miller boots the ball.
- 2:18:12And Keltner is on first on the error.
- 2:18:14It was a tricky bounder.
- 2:18:16Came to Eddie Miller the shortstop on a bad bounce.
- 2:18:19And it scored and rightly as a base hit.
- 2:18:22That ball took a bad hop down there.
- 2:18:24Hit Miller in the chest.
- 2:18:26He made a second grab at it.
- 2:18:28And it scored as a base hit for Keltner.
- 2:18:32He was batting for Smith the pitcher.
- 2:18:35Now we have Flash Gordon up there.
- 2:18:38Joe's been at bat once, grounded the shortstop, first pitch, swinging strike.
- 2:18:42One man out on the ninth, five-three in favor of the National League.
- 2:18:57And the next pitch.
- 2:18:58Gordon lands a hit in the right field.
- 2:19:01Keltner pulls up at second.
- 2:19:04Slaughterfield did that ball fast.
- 2:19:06The rally is on.
- 2:19:07There's a chance here for the American League.
- 2:19:10One man out and runners on first and second, a tying run.
- 2:19:14And a fellow by the name of Buck Travis coming up, who has already hit one double.
- 2:19:22In four times at bat and scored one run.
- 2:19:28Left-handed batter, one away in the ninth, five-three in favor of the National League.
- 2:19:37First pitch to Travis is a fast ball, a bit outside.
- 2:19:42Letter high, ball one.
- 2:19:47Keltner is on second, Gordon on first.
- 2:19:52Paso pitching from the shoulder, here it comes.
- 2:19:55And there's a foul ball drifting out left field way into the bullpen,
- 2:19:59usually occupied by the Tiger warm-up pitchers.
- 2:20:03Strike one and ball one.
- 2:20:10For the National League, Archie Vaughan has batted in four of the five runs.
- 2:20:15Terry Moore batted in the other with a long fly to left field.
- 2:20:21Vaughan is not in the game now, Eddie Miller playing short.
- 2:20:26Paso is ready.
- 2:20:27He pitches, a curved ball gets the outside corner for a called strike on Travis.
- 2:20:35Two strikes, one ball.
- 2:20:42One man out, second and first occupied.
- 2:20:49Here's the pitch, outside, ball two, two and two.
- 2:20:54Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:20:58There's the clutch, the pitch is coming.
- 2:21:01Another one outside, ball three, three and two.
- 2:21:06The crowd is hanging around.
- 2:21:08I haven't seen anybody go home yet.
- 2:21:1554,674.
- 2:21:20Ted Williams has batted in one of the American League runs.
- 2:21:24Lou Budrow has batted in one.
- 2:21:29Dominic DiMaggio has batted in one.
- 2:21:32Travis has a chance to bat in one, right here.
- 2:21:35Paso working on the new one, dries his hand, faces the batter, here's the pitch.
- 2:21:40Ball four, that loads the bases.
- 2:21:43He tried to make him go for another outside pitch.
- 2:21:47Travis wouldn't swing.
- 2:21:50Three men on, one man out and Joe DiMaggio up.
- 2:21:54Joe's had one hit, a double off Paso the last time up.
- 2:21:58Walk once, fly deep to center field, bowled out to third base.
- 2:22:04That's the first base on balls issued by Paso.
- 2:22:13Bucky Walters walked two, Whit Wyatt walked one.
- 2:22:17Derringer walked none.
- 2:22:20Three on, full windup, here's the pitch, DiMaggio fouls.
- 2:22:24Tops one, bounces it on the ground over toward the Tiger dugout behind third,
- 2:22:29where the American Lakers are huddling today.
- 2:22:36Fang runners on second, Keltner on third, Joe Gordon on second.
- 2:22:43Buck Travis on first, one man out and one strike on DiMaggio, Joseph.
- 2:22:52Plenty of racket out here.
- 2:22:54Paso's arm goes up for the pitch, DiMaggio swings at a fast one,
- 2:22:59and he was swinging from the heel please.
- 2:23:03High fast pitch, Joseph failed to meet it.
- 2:23:09He was really going, going for three or four that time.
- 2:23:17Yeah, but he was going for more.
- 2:23:19All right, two strikes, one, a bounder to shortstop, Eddie Miller handles the ball fast.
- 2:23:26Here comes Keltner scoring, Miller's toss to Herman at second, forces Travis.
- 2:23:32DiMaggio beat Herman's rather bad throw to McCormick, it pulled him off the bag,
- 2:23:40and there's only one out on the play.
- 2:23:43Instead of a double play ending the ball game,
- 2:23:46Herman's throw from second to McCormick at first to try to complete the double,
- 2:23:52pulled the first baseman off the bag and gave Joe DiMaggio a life at first.
- 2:23:57Gordon moved over to third, the score is 5-4 in favor of the National Lakers.
- 2:24:02A big huddle out there at the pitcher's mound with Ted Williams coming up.
- 2:24:11And we'll see what the dope is.
- 2:24:13First and third occupied, Williams has had one hit, a double,
- 2:24:18has walked once, lied to center field and struck out.
- 2:24:30Now the tying run, the person that Joe Gordon is on third.
- 2:24:34First pitch to Williams, way outside, little high,
- 2:24:37looks as though it might have possibly been a pitch out for Danning to take a peg at third base.
- 2:24:43However, Lavagetto isn't paying much attention to the base runner,
- 2:24:48he's protecting that territory.
- 2:24:51Williams might push a hit down through there, playing right on the line between third and second.
- 2:24:58While Eddie Miller, the shortstop, is deep and over near second.
- 2:25:02Second baseman Herman up toward first, foul ball right over our heads, strike.
- 2:25:06Count us one and one.
- 2:25:12Two men gone in the ninth.
- 2:25:205-4 in favor of the National Lakers.
- 2:25:28One strike and one ball, Ted Williams the batter, Danning out of the crouch,
- 2:25:32Paso pitches high inside, ball two and Paso is asking umpire Babe Pennelly,
- 2:25:40tossing a new ball, there's something wrong with that one, Babe does.
- 2:25:44Claude gives this one a going over.
- 2:25:49And this boys and girls is a ball game and has been one all afternoon.
- 2:25:54A real all-star affair, they've done everything, made errors, good plays, hits, the pitch.
- 2:26:00Williams hits a powering fly, it looks as though it's way up in there, way up, way up,
- 2:26:05and the clap hits the top deck, the third deck, and this ball game is over.
- 2:26:11With the American League coming through again, it'll count as a home run because the ball is up on the top deck
- 2:26:18of the right field stand, everybody grabbing Ted, patting him on the back.
- 2:26:24Joe Cronin has his hat off and is giving him a Dutch rub.
- 2:26:27Artie Fletcher is also on his back and the kid really laced that one out.
- 2:26:32Boy oh boy, it didn't go over the roof, but it hit the third deck barrier in right field, way up there, plenty high.
- 2:26:40The third home run made in this ball game,
- 2:26:43Archie Vaughan made two for the National Lakers and drove in for their five runs.
- 2:26:48And Williams came along with this one to win the ball game, knocking in Gordon.
- 2:26:56And Joe DiMaggio, and of course himself.
- 2:27:05So that makes the totals for the ninth inning, two men out when the home run was hit, and the winning run scored.
- 2:27:14Three, four runs, three hits, no error, and none left on base.
- 2:27:30And the final score, the American Lakers, seven runs, 11 hits, three errors.
- 2:27:43The American League, seven runs, 11 hits, three errors.
- 2:27:47National League, five runs, ten hits, two errors.
- 2:27:52The winning pitcher, Edgar Smith, are the Chicago White Sox, the last one in there.
- 2:27:59And the loser, Claude Pesso, are the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:28:04So Chicago was very prominent in this.
- 2:28:07Ladies and girls, this game came to you through WWJ and W45D, and it was quite a ball game.
- 2:28:16And now the American League has the edge on the Nationals, six games to three.
- 2:28:25Started out today with five to three, now it's six to three.
- 2:28:29And it looked for quite a while as though the National League was going to sort of upset the Dope Bucket,
- 2:28:35because all the pregame dope was that the American League would have the power at the plate,
- 2:28:43while the National League would have the better pitching.
- 2:28:47However, up until this ninth inning, the National League not only had made more hits, but also more runs.
- 2:28:57It looked as though they were going to come in there with a five to two victory.
- 2:29:08After Frankie Hayes, first man up with a score of five, three in favor of the National League,
- 2:29:15Frankie Hayes, first up, popped a towering fly to second baseman Billy Harmon.
- 2:29:20Ken Keltner, then, of Cleveland Indians batted for Smith the pitcher and singled.
- 2:29:25Joe Gordon kept it going with a single, Keltner stopping at second.
- 2:29:31Then Travis walked, filling the bases.
- 2:29:35Joe DiMaggio slapped a fast bounder to shortstop,
- 2:29:41which ordinarily would have been turned into a double play and a victory for the National League.
- 2:29:46Miller gathered up the ball all right, tossed to Herman at second, forcing Travis.
- 2:29:52But Herman's throw was a bit wide to first base.
- 2:29:55It pulled McCormick off the bag, DiMaggio going fast, hit it, before McCormick could get back or tag him,
- 2:30:03and was safe, preventing a double play, on which Keltner scampered home from third.
- 2:30:12Then they had a big consultation out around the mound as to what to do with Ted Williams,
- 2:30:16with runners on first and third and two out.
- 2:30:19Should we pitch to the kid, or shall we walk him and take a chance on Dominic DiMaggio,
- 2:30:24who would have been the next batter up with the bases loaded?
- 2:30:28They decided to pitch to Ted, and Ted took a crack at the third pitch,
- 2:30:34hit it high against the top barrier, often right field,
- 2:30:38a home run, scoring Gordon and DiMaggio ahead of him, ending the ball game,
- 2:30:45with the American Leaguers winning 7-5.
- 2:30:49The pitching summaries of this game, Whitlow Wyatt, who will take the National League first,
- 2:30:54Whitlow Wyatt of the Brooklyn Dodgers started, worked two innings, allowed no runs, no hits,
- 2:31:00struck out none and walked one. Paul Derenger followed him, worked for two,
- 2:31:04gave up one run, two hits, struck out one and walked none.
- 2:31:08Bucky Walters, also of the Cincinnati Reds, pitched two innings, gave up one run, three hits,
- 2:31:14struck out two and walked two, and Pesso, Claude Pesso of the Chicago Cubs,
- 2:31:20the last pitcher in there, worked the last three and was touched for five runs,
- 2:31:29six hits, struck out two and walked one. He's the losing pitcher.
- 2:31:37For the American League, Bob Feller, the Cleveland Indians, worked the first three,
- 2:31:41allowed no runs, gave up one hit, struck out three and walked none.
- 2:31:47Lefty Torrenton Lee of the Chicago White Sox, worked the next three, he gave up one run,
- 2:31:52four hits, struck out none, walked none.
