- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, Avery Woods versus a college
- 0:04student, James Charles addresses his GoFundMe crash out and
- 0:08Justin Bieber's alleged Palantir concert.
- 0:12Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:16daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:19from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:22Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:25I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:28youth digital media brand and Centennial World.
- 0:32Welcome back to Mini scroll everyone, and I am so excited to
- 0:35say that you guys stopped the bop.
- 0:38We hit 1000 Spotify star ratings and I will finally stop asking
- 0:42you to rate US on Spotify, at least for now.
- 0:45I'll give you guys a break. So thank you so much to everyone
- 0:48who star rated us and helped us get there.
- 0:50It means so much. It was such an exciting thing to
- 0:52wake up to on Saturday morning. You honestly made my weekend.
- 0:56All right, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:58So the first story that I have for you guys yesterday is Avery
- 1:01Woods influencer and soon to be reality star is facing backlash
- 1:06after she is seemingly doxed a college student for leaving a
- 1:10rude comment on her Instagram post.
- 1:12Avery is a mommy and lifestyle influencer and she also has a
- 1:15podcast on the Unwell Network. The only time I think we've ever
- 1:19covered her meaningfully was when she made that boy mom
- 1:24Tiktok that went so insanely viral.
- 1:26And I don't actually even know if we did cover that, but she
- 1:29made this video where she basically was like, I love my
- 1:32daughter, but I love my son so much more.
- 1:36That's very much paraphrasing, but that is essentially what
- 1:38people extracted from that video.
- 1:40It went so viral. It kicked off this giant
- 1:43conversation online. This was a few years ago around
- 1:45like boy moms and the patriarchy and all of that kind of stuff.
- 1:49Aside from this, she is somewhat controversial.
- 1:52I don't listen to her podcast or really consume much of her
- 1:54content, but I know people have a lot of issues with like the
- 1:57opinions that she States and I think how she states them.
- 1:59OK so Avery has since been cast on the new Secret Lives of
- 2:03Mormon Wives Orange County spinoff and people initially
- 2:06were not super stoked about it to begin with.
- 2:09I have seen a lot of feedback in the comments that she's not
- 2:12Mormon or Mormon adjacent. Like on the original.
- 2:14Some of them have left the church but they grew up in Utah
- 2:17or they grew up Mormon. And with Aspen, Aspen Ovard, she
- 2:21is on the spin off as well and her and Avery are friends and
- 2:24she I believe was never Mormon but she grew up in that culture.
- 2:28So I think Avery doesn't have any ties to Mormonism, to the
- 2:32Mormon church, which a lot of people don't really like.
- 2:35So that was already an issue with that casting choice.
- 2:37And now another major one has kicked off this weekend after
- 2:42Avery responded to a user who posted something rude on her
- 2:45Instagram post. So Avery had posted a video of
- 2:47her and another cast member with a camera crew in the background.
- 2:50And the caption said, lots of opinions about a show that you
- 2:53haven't even watched yet. And that was in response, I
- 2:55believe, to the people who are saying, like, why are you on the
- 2:57show? You're not even Mormon.
- 2:58Then somebody commented on this video.
- 3:02Guys, she had to pay for her new house somehow.
- 3:06Avery screenshotted that, put it on her Instagram stories with a
- 3:10photo of the girl who commented that, and she wrote, why are the
- 3:16cutest girls always the meanest? Anyways, you're beautiful.
- 3:19Hope you have a better day today.
- 3:21Already a disproportionate reaction to a comment that said
- 3:25guy she had to pay for her new house somehow this is so OK, I'm
- 3:29getting ahead of myself and this is reminding me so much of the
- 3:31James Charles situation where it's like this person did not
- 3:33say anything like that mean to you, especially in the James
- 3:36Charles situation that girl didn't say anything mean to him.
- 3:38This was like a snarky rude comment, but like that's it like
- 3:42that's the extent of how far that went and so to put her full
- 3:46face and her full photo on your Instagram story and the comment
- 3:49I think that's disproportion. I know I said last episode that
- 3:52you could probably sway my opinion one way or another when
- 3:56influencers do this. And it's really ironic that the
- 3:59very first story of the next episode back is this.
- 4:02But I think it really depends. Like, that's what I was trying
- 4:04to say is it really depends on what the comment is, what the
- 4:06message is. Like in this case, I don't think
- 4:09that this was warranted. OK.
- 4:10Then Avery followed up with another Instagram story she
- 4:13wrote. Also, for those who are assuming
- 4:14I'm doing a reality show because I'm hurting for money, clearly
- 4:17don't understand how reality television works.
- 4:20I mean, yes, like, as somebody who has watched so much TV, like
- 4:25reality TVI know that you never get paid a lot in those early
- 4:28seasons, in those first few seasons, maybe, unless you're
- 4:31like a really big celebrity. Like I don't know if Jenna Lyons
- 4:34for New York got a big paycheck for that season.
- 4:37Like, I don't know. But regardless, like I know
- 4:40typically reality TV doesn't pay a lot in its early seasons, but
- 4:45this has clearly struck a nerve with her.
- 4:47Why do you feel the need to respond at all?
- 4:49OK, so then I guess because she posted her face on her Instagram
- 4:53account, the girl messaged her and wrote didn't go the way you
- 4:57were expecting it. Thanks for the 20 plus new
- 4:59followers and supporters because people were really in support of
- 5:02this girl because again, it was a disproportionate reaction.
- 5:06Most people thought to the comment that she left for Avery
- 5:09to like put her full face and comment and name on her
- 5:13Instagram story. Avery responds to this.
- 5:16You need help blocking you so you don't have to keep coming
- 5:18back to harass me. Wishing you nothing but healing
- 5:20and love. OK sure, block her like that is
- 5:22probably what you should have done from the start.
- 5:24If her comment really upset you, then Avery did something deeply
- 5:28unhinged. She then sent her a screenshot
- 5:33showing that she had DM Ed the girls university.
- 5:37This is what she wrote to the university.
- 5:39Hi there, wanted to reach out about someone who has been both
- 5:42publicly and privately harassing me on my social media pages.
- 5:46She seems to be a student of yours and has your university in
- 5:49her bio on Instagram. Wanted to flag for you because
- 5:52I'm sure you don't want cyberbully attending your
- 5:54school. And she sent that to the girl
- 5:56and she wrote gave your university a heads up because
- 5:59I'm sure they don't want to bully attending their school.
- 6:01Peace and love and healing. I'm sorry, trying to ruin a
- 6:05girl's education and future over a comment of her saying you got
- 6:10to pay for the new house somehow over like a snarky rude comment?
- 6:14Does anybody want to receive a comment like that?
- 6:16No, but there are a million other worst comments on that
- 6:19video than what that girl wrote. It was such a weird reaction to
- 6:24like a snarky rude comment that a lots of people were making.
- 6:29Now this has turned into like a full blown Internet movement
- 6:33against Avery. There is a petition going around
- 6:35trying to get Avery kicked off the cast of Secret Lives of
- 6:38Mormon Wives OC and what she did to the student is diabolical and
- 6:43horrible. I do find it ironic that there
- 6:46have never been petitions, as far as I know, that have gone
- 6:49around about like Taylor, Dakota, Jordan, Zach, any of the
- 6:53really deeply problematic figures and abusive figures that
- 6:57we have seen on the original show on that cast.
- 7:01Maybe because that has not extended to the audience.
- 7:04I'm assuming that's probably why.
- 7:06Whereas like Avery's behavior is extending now to regular people.
- 7:10But they wanted to get, I think 200 signatures and they got
- 7:13that. OK, so then the girl allegedly
- 7:15posted on Reddit. Obviously I can't verify that
- 7:18this is actually her, but this is a person claiming to be her.
- 7:20And they wrote, I'm the girl. She posted on her story.
- 7:23Hi all, I was damned by someone mentioning I had been put on
- 7:26Reddit. I just wanted to say thank you
- 7:28to everyone who has supported me.
- 7:29I truly wasn't expecting all this to happen over one joke
- 7:32comment I made. She's actually trying to get me
- 7:34kicked out of my university for harassment.
- 7:37I don't think that will happen due to the nature of my comment,
- 7:39but I wanted to let you know that's her new goal.
- 7:42She is not a nice person and baffled to be getting this type
- 7:45of behavior from a 31 year old mom.
- 7:47I'm not exactly sure if you can even message people on Reddit
- 7:50but I'm relatively new to the app.
- 7:51But feel free to reach out if you're curious about the
- 7:53situation. I am sure that the harassment
- 7:56and the hate and the DMS that influencers and celebrities get
- 8:00is so out of control. Like I am certain that it would
- 8:03take such a toll on you and that eventually you would probably
- 8:06would snap right? However, to have posted the
- 8:10initial post, OK sure maybe you could argue the 1st post where
- 8:14she shared her comment like the girl's comment and the picture
- 8:17of her and said like this girl's meme basically.
- 8:19Maybe you could argue this was like a rash decision, she was
- 8:22super angry and she just kind of snapped.
- 8:24OK but then to continue going to be engaged in DMS with this girl
- 8:28and then to message her university like that is
- 8:31methodical. That is not heat of the moment
- 8:33kind of shit. Block and move on.
- 8:36Don't read your comments, don't read your DMS, And if you can't
- 8:39handle that, people are going to speculate about how you make
- 8:43your money, what side of the political spectrum you're on,
- 8:46where you stand on certain issues.
- 8:48Whatever it is, either you need to make it clear or you need to
- 8:51be OK with people not fully knowing you and assuming
- 8:55probably the worst in you at all times and being OK with that
- 8:59because the benefits of you having this platform and this
- 9:02career away. The other stuff.
- 9:06All right, the next story that I have for you guys today, kind of
- 9:08continuing on with this theme is James Charles has apologized for
- 9:12mocking a girl who slid into his DMS asking him to donate to a
- 9:16GoFundMe after she allegedly lost her job at Spirit Airlines.
- 9:20So I covered this on Friday. It was a developing story, if
- 9:23you will, and now it has developed and James has taken
- 9:26the video down and he has apologized.
- 9:29So if you guys don't know what I'm talking about, James Charles
- 9:32made this absolutely insane video after a girl all slid into
- 9:36his DMS and said I just lost my job at Spirit Airlines can you
- 9:39donate to my go fund me? And he was like she doesn't even
- 9:41follow me why do you think I'm like your personal ATM?
- 9:44Like he was losing his mind but the thing that really triggered
- 9:47people was he called her entitled, lazy and stupid and
- 9:52told her that in the time that she took to DM him and everyone
- 9:55else, she probably DM D. She could have been applying for
- 9:58jobs and that this is just the real world.
- 10:00Just go get a job like everybody else.
- 10:02Welcome to the real world. Thousands of people have just
- 10:05lost their jobs and to that everybody was like exactly
- 10:09thousands of people have lost their jobs, James, something
- 10:11that you probably have never experienced and will never have
- 10:14to experience. So don't you think that maybe
- 10:16the job market is really not that great?
- 10:19You don't need to respond. You don't need to donate to the
- 10:21GoFundMe. I totally again, I totally
- 10:23understand that getting DMS like that, they probably get so many
- 10:25of them every single day. Just ignore them.
- 10:28If you don't want to address the DM, ignore it.
- 10:30OK, so now tons of people have chimed in, including Jackie Ina.
- 10:35Very jobless behavior on James Charles Park.
- 10:37James and I are considered peers.
- 10:39I'm a content creator. He's a content creator.
- 10:41I'm a founder. He is a founder.
- 10:42We are technically considered peers.
- 10:44I normally like to mind my business.
- 10:45I don't like to come after other creators.
- 10:47This is probably one of the like, I thought this was fake.
- 10:49Is this fake? I don't think James has ever had
- 10:52a real job. I don't think he's ever had a
- 10:54job that isn't social media, that isn't an independent
- 10:56contractor. I don't think he's ever clocked
- 10:57in. I don't think he's ever had AW
- 10:582. I don't think he's ever done any
- 10:59of that. The way you're talking to this
- 11:00person shows and it's very disgusting and it's very
- 11:03inappropriate. I would simply melt away if
- 11:05Jackie Ina made a video like this about me.
- 11:08And now James has returned with a quote UN quote apology.
- 11:10This city was fucking stupid, It was rude, it was obnoxious, it
- 11:14was privileged, and most importantly, it was completely
- 11:16fucking unnecessary. When I saw that DM, I absolutely
- 11:19had the choice to ignore it and say absolutely nothing at all
- 11:22and move on with my day, but instead I couldn't even tell you
- 11:25why her message just triggered me and I decided and said to
- 11:29make a video about it. And I bashed her and it was
- 11:32obnoxious and I shamed her for asking for help in a situation
- 11:36where she was clearly really struggling and this could have
- 11:38been her absolute last resort. I have no idea what was going on
- 11:42in her life and I should have never assumed that she was just
- 11:45copying and pasting this DM as an easy way out.
- 11:48I don't know, I just don't know. My intention behind making this
- 11:52video in the 1st place was I get a lot of messages like this
- 11:56every single day. And for me personally, it
- 11:59definitely sucks to receive messages from people that don't
- 12:02follow you and don't support you treating you like a personal ATM
- 12:06or bank account. But what I'm sure sucks even
- 12:09fucking more is not knowing where your next paycheck is
- 12:11coming from and not being sure whether or not you're going to
- 12:13be able to put food on the table for yourself and your family.
- 12:16So it really doesn't matter what my intentions were behind making
- 12:19the video because it came across as super fucking privilege.
- 12:21And like, I was basically shaming anybody that's
- 12:24unemployed for not trying hard enough to get a job.
- 12:27And I feel awful because that wasn't my intention and it
- 12:29really hurt a lot of people. And I know that it's not that
- 12:32easy. I know that the job market
- 12:34fucking sucks right now. I mean, he really listened to
- 12:36the feedback. Like those are all the talking
- 12:38points that people had. But like, what is going on?
- 12:42These people need to chill out. I'm not saying that you can't
- 12:46feel this way. Maybe I guess like in your
- 12:49personal life, like you don't need to take to the Internet and
- 12:51scream at us. You don't need to dox people.
- 12:53You don't need to be doing all of this.
- 12:55There definitely are instances where I am on the side of an
- 12:59influencer when they are defending themselves.
- 13:01Like if people are sliding into their DMS to say mean things
- 13:03about their kids, if they're talking about their bodies or
- 13:05their appearance, if they're sending them really hateful,
- 13:08threatening messages, like in that case, I understand wanting
- 13:11to stand up for yourself. Both of these instances with
- 13:14James and Avery, what insanely disproportionate reactions.
- 13:18OK. And the last story that I have
- 13:19for you guys today, I hate to defend a man, but Annabelle will
- 13:24not let me live it down if I don't use this platform that I
- 13:29have built from the ground up of mini scroll to correct the
- 13:32misinformation going around about Justin Bieber right now.
- 13:35So Justin Bieber is facing intense backlash on TikTok and
- 13:38Reddit after photos of him went viral in which he is performing
- 13:42at a corporate conference. If you look this up, social
- 13:46media users are widely reporting on this performance as Justin
- 13:50Bieber holding a quote, UN quote like private concert for
- 13:53Palantir executives. So if you don't know what
- 13:56Palantir is, it's considered one of like the bad guy companies in
- 14:01the world, largely because of its data mining software, which
- 14:04enables mass surveillance and has recently been used by ICE in
- 14:08America. So this is from Wired, quote.
- 14:10Last fall, Palantir seemed to become the technological
- 14:13backbone of Trump's immigration enforcement machinery, providing
- 14:17software identifying, tracking and helping deport immigrants on
- 14:20behalf of the Department of Homeland Security.
- 14:22So yes, Palantir is big bad for reasons beyond just that.
- 14:27So it makes sense that fans of Justin Bieber were shook that he
- 14:30would do this private concert for Palantir executives.
- 14:33However, if you do like 4 seconds of research on this, you
- 14:37will see that this was not some private concert for Palantir
- 14:40executives. Justin Bieber was the headline
- 14:42performer at WNDR which is a yearly private invite only
- 14:47conference that brings together tech entrepreneurs, CE OS a list
- 14:51celebrities and entertainment industry execs.
- 14:53So he was the headliner at this conference.
- 14:56And this is from the LA Times, quote the Ultra A list.
- 14:59Talks and guests included director James Cameron, former
- 15:02Disney CEO Bob Iger, YouTube CEO Neil Mahon, FIFA president
- 15:07Gianni Infantino, Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts, and comedians
- 15:12Chris Rock and Trevor Noah and artist Jeff Koons.
- 15:15So the Palantir CEO Alex Karp was there, but this was not like
- 15:18a private concert for Palantir executives.
- 15:22And even though you could argue that this is all a technicality,
- 15:26right, Like the missing information around this
- 15:27performance doesn't actually matter that much because the
- 15:30Palantir CEO, he was still there.
- 15:31There were other tech billionaires who are bad guys
- 15:34there too. It will continue to be so hard
- 15:37for us to make progress if we are not so clear on correcting
- 15:43misinformation. Part of it is around holding
- 15:45people to account, right? Like, if we don't have the
- 15:47information correct, then it actually gives those people an
- 15:51out. Like Justin and his team can
- 15:53brush this off as like an overarching misunderstanding
- 15:57from the public, fake news. It's not something that they
- 16:00technically need to respond to because we don't have it right.
- 16:03Whereas if the actual outrage was around the fact that he
- 16:06performed at this for a bunch of billionaires or aligned himself
- 16:10with this conference or whatever, and we didn't like
- 16:12that and we were giving that feedback, but it was like based
- 16:15on real information and not misinformation.
- 16:19And maybe that would actually make these people think twice.
- 16:21But because it was technically not true, it kind of allows
- 16:25Justin or anyone in this type of situation to hide behind that.
- 16:28Someone on Reddit wrote it's definitely a bad decision to be
- 16:31performing at an event where Palantir exec is speaking.
- 16:34But there is a huge difference in what the title is trying to
- 16:36imply, that Palantir is putting on the event and that Bieber is
- 16:39singing for them. I think it's a good enough
- 16:41critique to call out Bieber and other celebs for also being
- 16:44where Palantir exec is featured as a speaker.
- 16:46Their teams should have been aware of whoever else is
- 16:49speaking there and made a decision and failed to do so.
- 16:52And that should be called out, especially because Justin and
- 16:55Haley showed up. What was it like the Oscars, the
- 16:57Golden Globes? And they were wearing like ice
- 16:58out pins. So yeah, like fair enough.
- 17:00But like if we don't have the right information then the
- 17:03backlash or the outrage just falls flat.
- 17:06The craziest thing though, you guys, the craziest thing on this
- 17:11schedule is Justin Bieber in conversation with NVIDIA CEO.
- 17:18Like what? What kind of world are we living
- 17:21in? I was dying and I was like,
- 17:23Annabelle, what the fuck is going on?
- 17:24Like, what do you think this is about?
- 17:26And she was like, honestly, taste is like the thing that
- 17:30tech is currently obsessed with, which like if you spend enough
- 17:33time on LinkedIn, you will see is true.
- 17:35Every tech bro is constantly posting about cultural relevancy
- 17:39and taste and how you maintain those or bring those to life in
- 17:44like a post AI world. So it's definitely another
- 17:47example of these like tech companies trying to give their
- 17:50brand aura and like show that they have taste.
- 17:53But Justin Bieber in conversation with the NVIDIA
- 17:57CEO. No, what episode of Black Mirror
- 18:02are we living in? Like I can't.
- 18:03Anyways, guys, that's it for mini school today.
- 18:05Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 18:08Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 18:10Please Spotify star rate US. I love you and I will talk to
- 18:12you tomorrow. Bye.
