• 0:00
Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are here
• 0:02
and it is our first episode of March. We have
• 0:05
made it to month three. And so welcome back to
• 0:09
Fostering Faith. If you are a return listener,
• 0:11
we welcome you back home. We hope that these
• 0:14
messages are inspiring you, encouraging you to
• 0:17
dive into God's. Word. And if you are a new listener,
• 0:22
welcome to Fostering Faith. We are here fostering
• 0:24
our faith together as we walk through scripture
• 0:26
together and we are better in communities. So
• 0:28
this is why we're putting these podcasts out.
• 0:30
We do want to remind you that we do have Word
• 0:32
books now associated with each podcast. And so
• 0:36
they are out on our website, fosteringfaithmedia
• 0:38
.com. And so go check that stuff out there. We
• 0:41
have a newsletter that's going to be out. And
• 0:44
so sign up for that, put your email in and let's
• 0:46
grow in Christ together. So something to me is
• 0:51
so powerful. I think that we put labels on ourselves
• 0:55
and I teach the kids this, I teach patients this,
• 0:59
I try to teach myself this. And so in this episode,
• 1:02
we're going to be calling it who God says we
• 1:05
are, our identity in Christ. And so there's something
• 1:07
powerful about knowing who you are, but something
• 1:10
is more powerful about knowing who you are in
• 1:14
Christ because identity is the foundation of
• 1:17
everything that you do, your choices, your competence,
• 1:19
your relationships, your purpose, your calling,
• 1:22
the way that you pray, the way that you speak,
• 1:24
the way that you lead. All of that flows from
• 1:27
identity and an enemy knows this. And that's
• 1:30
why the identity is one of the first areas that
• 1:33
he will attack. The one the hardest hit areas
• 1:36
is the one that we need to protect the hardest.
• 1:39
And so if the devil can't destroy your calling,
• 1:42
He'll try to distort your identity. He's there
• 1:45
and He's going to try to ruin your purpose. He'll
• 1:49
try to convince you that you're unworthy of it.
• 1:52
If you can't stop the plan of God, He'll try
• 1:55
to stop you from being the person of God. And
• 1:58
He does that by whispering lies about who you
• 2:01
are. So as we step into March, this whole month
• 2:04
is going to be about the identity in Christ.
• 2:06
And today we're going to be starting off with
• 2:08
  something foundational, something stable, something
• 2:11
eternal. who God says you are, not who you were
• 2:15
in your past, not who culture says that you are,
• 2:19
not who your family say that you are, not your
• 2:22
insecurities and not what other people say you
• 2:25
are, but who God says you are. And there's nothing
• 2:28
more stabilizing when we're hearing God's voice
• 2:32
over your life. And there's nothing more dangerous
• 2:34
than living from a false identity, because whatever
• 2:38
you don't know who you are, you will settle for
• 2:40
anything. You will accept any label. You will
• 2:43
believe any lie. You will shrink when God is
• 2:46
calling you to stand and you will compare yourself
• 2:48
to everyone else because you're not anchored
• 2:52
in who God has designed you to be. An identity
• 2:55
is not something for you to discover. It's something
• 2:58
God reveals. You don't create your identity.
• 3:01
You receive it. You don't decide who you are.
• 3:04
You discover who God already declared you to
• 3:07
be. You're given identity before you were even
• 3:10
given a breath. And when you're spoken over,
• 3:14
before you were spoken to, you were named before
• 3:19
you were born. In Psalm 139, God says, I knit
• 3:23
you together in your mother's womb. He didn't
• 3:26
mass produce you. He handcrafted you. He intentionally
• 3:29
designed you. Your personality, your wiring,
• 3:32
your strengths, your creativity, the way that
• 3:34
your mind works. The way that your heart feels
• 3:37
deeply, the way that you see the world and none
• 3:39
of it's random is divine architecture. And have
• 3:43
you guys ever knitted? I've never knitted, but
• 3:45
I've crocheted and just the intricacy and my
• 3:49
aunt who knitted like doilies and like signs
• 3:52
and stuff like that and just the integral parts
• 3:55
of it. And my dad was a woodworker back in the
• 3:58
day and he would make these plaques and these
• 4:02
wedding plaques and They were so intricate and
• 4:06
so delicate. And so if a human can make something
• 4:09
so perfectly designed and thought out, just think
• 4:15
how much effort and time and detail that God
• 4:19
put into you. Just how He knit every cell, every
• 4:22
structure, every part. If you understand the
• 4:25
biology of how the human body works, it is literally
• 4:28
amazing. And let me tell you something that the
• 4:31
enemy never wants you to realize. You are not
• 4:34
who you used to be. You are who God says that
• 4:38
you are. Your past does not define your identity.
• 4:40
Your trauma does not define your identity. Your
• 4:43
mistakes are not your identity. Your weaknesses
• 4:45
are not your identity. The worst days are not
• 4:49
your identity. Who you are in God created, redeemed,
• 4:54
called, empowered is who you are. And scripture
• 4:59
is full of identity statements, not about what
• 5:02
you do, but about who you are. And so listen
• 5:05
to this. You are chosen, Ephesians 1 .4. You
• 5:10
are loved, Jeremiah 31 .3. You are forgiven,
• 5:14
Colossians 1 .14. You are redeemed, Ephesians
• 5:18
  1 .7. You are God's masterpiece, Ephesians 2
• 5:22
.10. And you are a child of God, John 1 .12.
• 5:26
  You are a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5, 17.
• 5:30
You are strengthened, Philippians 4, 13. You
• 5:33
are set apart, 1 Peter 2, 9. You are free, John
• 5:38
  8, 36. You are called, 2 Timothy 1, 9. You are
• 5:43
protected, Psalm 91. You are empowered, Acts
• 5:47
1, 8. You are known, Psalm 139. You are sealed
• 5:52
with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1, 13. and you
• 5:56
are never alone. Deuteronomy 31, 6. Identity
• 6:01
is not insecurity talking. Identity is not culture
• 6:04
talking. Identity is not fear talking. Identity
• 6:07
is God talking. And everything God says about
• 6:10
you is stable, eternal, and unchanging truth.
• 6:15
I think that we get into culture and we say,
• 6:17
oh, it's your truth. It's this truth. The truth
• 6:21
is scripture. The truth is what God said. There
• 6:24
is nothing that He has said that is not true.
• 6:26
It is truth. But here's the tension. Even though
• 6:29
God declares these things over us, many believers
• 6:32
still live in insecurity, fear, self -doubt,
• 6:37
imposter syndrome, and comparison. Why? Why do
• 6:41
we do this to ourselves? Because what God says
• 6:44
about us and what we believe about ourselves
• 6:48
don't always match. And spiritual maturity is
• 6:51
the process of being and your identity, bringing
• 6:55
your identity into agreement with heaven. Identity
• 6:58
  is not a feeling. It's a declaration. It's sometimes
• 7:02
you had to declare the truth before you feel
• 7:04
the truth. You may not feel competent, but you
• 7:08
are chosen. You may not feel strong, but you
• 7:11
are empowered. You may not feel worthy, but you
• 7:14
are redeemed. You may not feel loved, but you
• 7:17
are deeply loved. And you may not feel enough,
• 7:21
but God has called you his masterpiece. And listen,
• 7:25
the enemy knows scripture better than you do.
• 7:27
He knows exactly what God speaks over your life.
• 7:30
And that's why he works overtime to contradict
• 7:33
it. The enemy will attack your identity with
• 7:36
lies, labels, comparison, insecurity, fear, shame,
• 7:42
doubt, voices of your past people, memories of
• 7:46
old seasons, the opinions of strangers, and the
• 7:50
pressure to perform. And the fear? a failure.
• 7:54
Satan never attacks who you are not. He attacks
• 7:57
who you are. He attacks the area of the greatest
• 8:01
spiritual potential. He hits on your confidence.
• 8:04
It's because you're called to lead. He hits your
• 8:07
voice because you're meant to speak. He's been
• 8:11
hitting your mind because you are anointed to
• 8:13
think with clarity. If he's hitting your worth,
• 8:16
it's because you're positioned for purpose. Identity
• 8:21
attacks always reveal identity assignments. So
• 8:24
let's talk about something practical. Identity
• 8:27
in Christ is not just spiritual. It's lived out.
• 8:31
It shows up in your decisions. It shows up in
• 8:33
the way that you respond to things. It shows
• 8:35
up in who you let speak into your life. It shows
• 8:40
up when you pay close attention. It shows up
• 8:44
on the way that you pray. It shows up in the
• 8:46
way that you walk into a room. It shows up in
• 8:48
the way that you handle conflict, and it shows
• 8:51
up in the standards you set. When you know who
• 8:54
you are, you stop apologizing for it. A child
• 8:59
of God does not shrink. A chosen person does
• 9:03
not compare. A forgiven person does not stay
• 9:06
stuck in shame. A loved person does not chase
• 9:10
love in unhealthy places. A cold person does
• 9:13
not belittle their purpose. A masterpiece does
• 9:16
not compare. with copies. Someone walking in
• 9:19
identity does not let insecurity narrate their
• 9:22
story. Identity is freedom. But I want to go
• 9:27
a little bit deeper. Identity is not about self
• 9:30
-esteem. Identity is about sound doctrine. Your
• 9:34
identity is built on theology and not feelings.
• 9:38
God says who you are. Full stop. You cannot bargain
• 9:43
with it. You cannot edit it. You cannot rewrite
• 9:46
it. You can only come into agreement with it.
• 9:50
When the prodigal son returned home in Luke 15,
• 9:53
he rehearsed a whole speech, I am no longer worthy,
• 9:56
just make me a servant. He had adopted the identity
• 9:59
of Shane. He was ready to downgrade himself,
• 10:03
but the father interrupted him and the father
• 10:05
said, bring the robe, bring the ring, bring the
• 10:09
men's sandals and kill the thighted calf. Why?
• 10:13
Because the son didn't get to choose who he was.
• 10:16
The father did. Identity is based on who the
• 10:19
father is. It's not who the child feels like
• 10:23
he is. And let me tell you something. You can't
• 10:27
outperform your identity. You can't overfill
• 10:30
your identity. You can't outrun your identity.
• 10:33
You can only reject it or receive it. Which are
• 10:37
we going to pick? Are you going to reject what
• 10:38
God has called you to do? Are you going to deny
• 10:41
your blessings that he's poured upon you? Are
• 10:45
you going to open your hands and say, I receive
• 10:49
it. I receive what you've put in me. Open my
• 10:52
eyes. And so for some of you listening right
• 10:54
now, the Holy Spirit is pulling you back into
• 10:57
alignment. Remember who you are. I think it was
• 11:01
on Malayan King, whenever Moose Basa was talking
• 11:04
to Simba. Remember whose you are. You are living
• 11:08
like a rejected person when God has called you
• 11:11
chosen. You're living like an orphan when God
• 11:13
has called you His child. You're living like
• 11:16
someone unloved when God's called you dearly
• 11:18
loved. And you're living like someone without
• 11:21
purpose when heaven is holding your calling with
• 11:24
both hands. Your reflection question this week
• 11:29
that's in the workbook is, Who does God say I
• 11:33
am? And what part of it Do I struggle to believe?
• 11:38
Sit with that. Let the Holy Spirit show you your
• 11:42
identity gap because healing happens in that
• 11:46
place, in the quiet, at His feet. And so we hope
• 11:52
that this message encouraged you. We hope that
• 11:54
this message opened your eyes to whose you are.
• 11:58
and that you are loved, that you are redeemed,
• 12:01
that you are chosen, that you're forgiven, that
• 12:03
  you're a masterpiece, that you're a child of
• 12:05
God, that you're a new creation, that you are
• 12:06
strengthened, that you are set apart, that you
• 12:08
are free, that you are called, that you are protected,
• 12:10
that you are empowered, that you are known, that
• 12:12
you are sealed with the Holy Spirit, and that
• 12:14
you are never alone. And the enemy is going to
• 12:18
come after you with lies and labels and comparison,
• 12:20
insecurities, fear, shame, and doubt, voices
• 12:24
and memories and opinions and pressure to perform.
• 12:27
and fear of failure. But we're gonna say, you
• 12:31
know what? My God's already defeated you. My
• 12:34
dad already beat you. I will not listen to you.
• 12:37
My God said this. And that's why it's so important
• 12:39
for scripture to be written on your heart and
• 12:42
for you to know what scripture is. And how do
• 12:44
you know it? You read it, you spend time with
• 12:45
it. Whenever that timer goes off on your TikTok
• 12:48
and that you've already had your two hour limit,
• 12:50
don't escape it. Once your hour is up, go spend
• 12:53
it in scripture. Write it on your heart. And
• 12:56
for those living in other parts of the country,
• 12:58
in the USA, we're able to have these Bibles.
• 13:00
It's such a blessing to be able to have, I have
• 13:02
three Bibles sitting in front of me now, just
• 13:04
to be able to turn the scripture, the pages.
• 13:07
And just like that song that was out, we have
• 13:09
desks on our Bibles, but we have brand new iPhones.
• 13:11
Yes, you could have the YouVersion Bible app.
• 13:13
Yes, there's so many different apps that are
• 13:14
on the phone, but are you using them? Are you
• 13:17
using them to build and to remember who He said
• 13:20
that you are? This book is alive. He knows what
• 13:23
you need and He will turn scripture in. and you
• 13:26
could have read it a hundred times and you really
• 13:28
feel like he had came in there in the middle
• 13:30
of the night and just re -changed what that verse
• 13:33
said because you've read it before but this book
• 13:34
is alive and it is breathing and it is his breath
• 13:38
and it's just so exciting to see how he communicates
• 13:41
because he will use all the different things
• 13:45
just to make sure that you are aware that you
• 13:47
are loved and that you are seen and so we hope
• 13:49
this message encourages you if it did share it
• 13:52
like it Make sure that you're going to the website
• 13:54
and getting those workbooks. Maybe turn into
• 13:56
a small group session. Send it to a friend. And
• 13:59
so we would love to pray for over you. Dear Heavenly
• 14:01
Father, thank you so much for these listeners.
• 14:03
Thank you so much for declaring who we are before
• 14:05
the world ever had a chance to label us. Thank
• 14:08
you for reminding us of our identity. Thank you
• 14:11
for showing us that lives that we believe. Thank
• 14:14
you that you're breaking off every false label.
• 14:16
Thank you that you're bringing our identity into
• 14:18
alignment with heaven. Thank you for the help.
• 14:20
to live boldly as your sons and daughters. We
• 14:24
pray this in Jesus' name. Amen and amen. So your
• 14:27
action set this week matches your workbook. Write
• 14:30
down the five things that God says about you
• 14:32
and declare them out loud every day. And identity
• 14:37
grows with repetition. We hope you have a great
• 14:40
week. We love you guys. Bye.
