- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcast.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up on NHL Unscripted, episode number 103. Cinephile in
- 0:26Speaker 1: 60 prime time. Robert Pattinson, fantastic performance to catch a killer.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And Norm, the new documentary from Judd Apatow is on
- 0:33Speaker 1: Netflix with a great Canadian comic, Norm MacDonald.
- 0:36Speaker 2: We're also talking with the Brew Crew. How are you back? What?
- 0:39Speaker 1: And the McJesus freak, Connor McDavid, continues to be an
- 0:42Speaker 1: absolute stud. But I never believe in burying the lead.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So episode 103, let's get this out of the way.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Next week is going to be our final episode of
- 0:49Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted. I just want to thank the NHL, iHeartMedia,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and of course, most of all, all of you for
- 0:54Speaker 1: being fantastic listeners. I've had a blast with J.D., Tal,
- 0:58Speaker 1: our fearless producer. Nate came along for the ride.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Final.
- 1:00Speaker 1: 20 episodes or so, so 103 episodes.
- 1:03Speaker 3: J.D.
- 1:03Speaker 1: 's going to reach out to Billy Joe and Green Day,
- 1:05Speaker 1: see if he can get the rights to Good Riddance.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Time of Your Life.
- 1:07Speaker 1: An emotional farewell next week, J.D. We're going to pull
- 1:10Speaker 1: out all the stops, like a true series finale. Maybe
- 1:12Speaker 1: we'll have guest stars. It'll be a blast.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Yeah, we're going to do a whole live stream, so
- 1:17Speaker 4: tune in. We're going to get everybody. You can only
- 1:19Speaker 4: download the live stream, though, afterwards on iHeart where you
- 1:23Speaker 4: get your podcast. But we're going to bring in I mean,
- 1:26Speaker 4: I heard Metallica might stop by.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:28Speaker 4: You know, Mark Carney from Canada.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yes, Mark Carney coming to Parliament.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we're talking.
- 1:33Speaker 2: We might get Trump on. We'll see. We'll do the
- 1:36Speaker 2: whole thing. It's a banner day here.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It'll be as divisive as possible. It'll be fantastic. And, Nate,
- 1:41Speaker 1: thank you to you for coming along and giving us
- 1:43Speaker 1: some juice down the stretch. I wish it was going
- 1:45Speaker 1: a little bit longer, but I know we'll definitely reconvene
- 1:48Speaker 1: on NHL Network for sure.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, absolutely. And, yeah, thanks for having me. Thanks
- 1:53Speaker 3: for letting me join the crew and you know, just
- 1:55Speaker 3: add to the fun. I was like a lost little kitten.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I didn't know where to go, and you guys took
- 2:03Speaker 3: me in. So I was glad to be here.
- 2:06Speaker 2: We take all vagrants and vagabonds, Nate. It doesn't matter
- 2:08Speaker 2: who you are.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Our doors are always open here. He's sitting in the
- 2:12Speaker 4: Louvre right now.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Tal, your thoughts on another project coming to an end.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You're a man who has been very resilient. You work
- 2:18Speaker 1: through these projects as an independent producer.
- 2:20Speaker 3: You're a director.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You're an editor.
- 2:22Speaker 2: How do you deal with a bittersweet finale of something
- 2:24Speaker 2: you care about?
- 2:25Speaker 5: Well, look, we had a great run, I think. Over
- 2:29Speaker 5: 100 episodes is nothing to sneeze at. It's been, I
- 2:32Speaker 5: said in our little text chain, it's been an honor
- 2:35Speaker 5: and a privilege working with you guys. I hope we
- 2:37Speaker 5: get to do it in some other capacity. And the
- 2:39Speaker 5: only other thing I was going to say, and this
- 2:41Speaker 5: was something I wasn't even aware of until we started this,
- 2:43Speaker 5: I wanted to actually applaud Nate and JD because both
- 2:47Speaker 5: of you guys more than once have brought up the
- 2:50Speaker 5: subject of mental health on this podcast and your own
- 2:53Speaker 5: mental health. Um, and I think that is an invaluable
- 2:57Speaker 5: conversation for a lot of people to see a couple of,
- 3:01Speaker 5: of pro hockey players saying, Hey, we deal with this
- 3:04Speaker 5: stuff too. And so I applaud you both for making
- 3:06Speaker 5: that at least a small part of what we do on, on,
- 3:09Speaker 5: or what we did on, uh, unscripted.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 4: It's taking another hit here after this two episodes. So I, I,
- 3:16Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You guys are part of my mental health. I know
- 3:20Speaker 3: they're going to dive, you know, it's, uh, no, it's.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I appreciate it. It's been a pleasure and an honor.
- 3:28Speaker 4: It's been fun. A lot of laughs.
- 3:30Speaker 2: A lot of Greek porn. A lot of hard.
- 3:33Speaker 4: We stayed hard the whole time. We stayed hard.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Definitely skirted the line between X-rated and G-rated. And before
- 3:39Speaker 1: we get into the hockey, I do want to say again, J.D.
- 3:42Speaker 1: 's wife Jillian has been unbelievable on social media. The
- 3:44Speaker 1: best one so far. And I say this because I
- 3:46Speaker 1: just saw John Turturro's new film. It's called The Only
- 3:48Speaker 1: Living Pickpocket in the World. It's a great love letter
- 3:51Speaker 1: to New York City. A scant 82 minutes. I just
- 3:53Speaker 1: watched the screener. And rather than thinking about how good
- 3:56Speaker 1: Turturro is in this movie, how much he deserves his
- 3:58Speaker 1: Oscar nomination, I'm watching Jillian parrot one of his most
- 4:01Speaker 1: infamous roles, the role of Jesus in The Big Lebowski,
- 4:04Speaker 1: playing a pederast. And she paid homage to it.
- 4:08Speaker 4: She paid homage to the pederast. I'm surprised you didn't
- 4:11Speaker 4: say it was our dirty dancing lift, which with a
- 4:15Speaker 4: grade three shoulder separation and no AC joint, I was
- 4:19Speaker 4: able to fucking fully extend. I didn't get any love
- 4:22Speaker 4: on that shit. I was gassed. Big workout, too, that day. But, yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 4: she's the pederast of all pederasts.
- 4:29Speaker 3: The ball washing was key, too. That was good form.
- 4:33Speaker 1: The infamous image of the way those guys are shining
- 4:35Speaker 1: the balls.
- 4:36Speaker 3: In the movie.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The ball. Oh, dude.
- 4:39Speaker 4: The comments in that post were the best thing because
- 4:43Speaker 4: people were just, you know, and that's kind of the
- 4:48Speaker 4: bright spot of social media is in all its downfalls
- 4:54Speaker 4: and things that are wrong with it, it's when everybody
- 4:56Speaker 4: comes together and they're all just quoting the movie one
- 4:59Speaker 4: after the other. And it's just like you look through
- 5:01Speaker 4: those quotes, there's gifs, people are laughing together. You see
- 5:05Speaker 4: a couple of people, but it was like actually for
- 5:08Speaker 4: the most part, when you get that many views, usually
- 5:10Speaker 4: there's some negative, somebody's trying to stir up rage bait.
- 5:13Speaker 4: It was just hilarious right down the wire. Just nobody
- 5:18Speaker 4: fucks with the Jesus, man.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Nobody. Great movie.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Great performance.
- 5:24Speaker 2: The dude abides. There's no question about it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Speaking of the dude, Brady Kachuk is a dude, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: it was quite the story last night on Amazon Prime,
- 5:32Speaker 1: seeing Brady Kachuk return to Ottawa.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It's one of those games where I look at the calendar.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We'd all circled it for all of us there on
- 5:37Speaker 1: Amazon Prime saying this is going to be a hell
- 5:38Speaker 1: of an environment. And I was a little surprised going in,
- 5:41Speaker 1: talking to some members of the media, that the game
- 5:43Speaker 1: was not a sellout. As of Monday, there were still
- 5:45Speaker 1: 2,000 tickets available. I said, this could be the hottest
- 5:47Speaker 1: ticket in Ottawa in years. But it was a beautiful
- 5:49Speaker 1: fall day in Ottawa. Maybe people just wanted to enjoy
- 5:51Speaker 1: the weather a little bit and then get their vitriol on.
- 5:54Speaker 2: But there was a certain buzz about the game. There's
- 5:56Speaker 2: no question about it.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Talking to Travis Green at the morning skate, he knew
- 5:59Speaker 1: his team was up for the challenge. Talking to Paul Maurice,
- 6:02Speaker 1: he said, I don't need to say anything to Brady.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He knows where it's at and what we're going to
- 6:04Speaker 1: do and And as much as Ottawa wants to beat him,
- 6:07Speaker 1: we want to defend his turf and show what he's
- 6:09Speaker 1: all about. I thought he conducted himself well at the
- 6:11Speaker 1: press conference ahead of time. My friend Julian McKenzie asked
- 6:14Speaker 1: him a good question. He said, Michael Andlauer, the Ottawa
- 6:17Speaker 1: Center's owner, said to him, you know, I think we
- 6:19Speaker 1: all like Brady, but ultimately this decision to leave Ottawa,
- 6:22Speaker 1: to ask out for trade, was motivated by his father
- 6:25Speaker 1: and by his brother. Would you care to comment to that?
- 6:27Speaker 1: And Brady said, hey, I'm my own person. I don't
- 6:30Speaker 1: need to have my dad or my brother make moves
- 6:32Speaker 1: for me. It was my decision, and I stand by it.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But again, he's entitled to his opinion is what it is.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I thought the funniest thing before the game was he said,
- 6:38Speaker 1: because when he mentioned all the jerseys that are going
- 6:40Speaker 1: to be thrown, he said, well, I've already talked to
- 6:42Speaker 1: Addy about it. And of course, we love Addy here.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I told Addy, thank you for Radko Gudis, one of
- 6:46Speaker 1: our better guests at NHL Unscripted.
- 6:47Speaker 2: She does some Panthers PR. And so Addy said to me,
- 6:49Speaker 2: she goes, yeah, Brady goes, I've talked to her.
- 6:52Speaker 1: All the jerseys that people throw on the ice tonight,
- 6:54Speaker 1: we're going to donate to the Boys and Girls.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Club of Ottawa. That was stupid, though.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Why didn't you like that?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Really? You didn't like that?
- 7:01Speaker 4: No, because it's like you're announcing your what you're encouraging
- 7:04Speaker 4: people to throw stuff on. And then if you were
- 7:07Speaker 4: going to just do it, I'm a big thing of like,
- 7:10Speaker 4: just do it. Like just after the game.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Because then people were not going to give you the
- 7:16Speaker 4: benefit of the doubt. You're like trying to say like, oh,
- 7:18Speaker 4: it's like this is like kind of fun loving. I
- 7:20Speaker 4: was like, come on, man. Just just donate. I'm a
- 7:23Speaker 4: big proponent and like don't announce it.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Just do it. Just like. Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Just do it and say, because I think once he
- 7:29Speaker 4: said that, people started doctoring the jerseys so he couldn't
- 7:34Speaker 4: donate them and.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Stuff like that. Because again, it's like, they hate you
- 7:38Speaker 2: so much.
- 7:39Speaker 4: It's like, they're not throwing the jersey on the ice
- 7:42Speaker 4: for you to like, you know, and then now you
- 7:44Speaker 4: announce it, oh, I'm going to donate them. So then
- 7:45Speaker 4: they're like, all right, screw this guy. But listen, he's
- 7:50Speaker 4: not a bad kid.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It is what it is. We love Addy. It was,
- 7:54Speaker 2: I tell you what though, A + + +.
- 7:57Speaker 4: For Ottawa fans, us Canadians have been taking it in
- 8:01Speaker 4: the foreskin for.
- 8:04Speaker 2: A while now.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Anybody who thinks Canadians are genteel and overly polite, that
- 8:08Speaker 1: was a scene last night, to JD's point.
- 8:10Speaker 2: From the jump, you heard the boos out there.
- 8:13Speaker 1: To me, the two things that stood out was, one,
- 8:14Speaker 1: the booing of a tribute video, which I was even
- 8:16Speaker 1: amused by. I love it. I love when Brady did that. Yeah,
- 8:19Speaker 1: booed the entire thing. And the F you Brady chants. Like,
- 8:22Speaker 1: right out of the gate, they're booing him when he
- 8:24Speaker 1: hits the ice. That's fine.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Expecting that.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Brady sucks was going pretty strong, but five minutes in,
- 8:29Speaker 1: it was 18,000 FU Brady's for a while. I was like, man,
- 8:32Speaker 1: they were giving it to him.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Adnan, did they do a fuck your podcast too?
- 8:36Speaker 2: I think they did.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think there's something about that. And then, and then
- 8:41Speaker 2: Timmy's better.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And we love Timmy or whatever.
- 8:45Speaker 4: But no, like to that point, you know, kudos to Brady,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you know, going, scoring a goal, playing the villain. I mean,
- 8:52Speaker 4: these two, they're, they love, they relish in being the heel.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Correct.
- 8:56Speaker 4: They're WWE characters in the NHL. It's great for the game.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 9:00Speaker 4: But A + + for the Ottawa faithful coming out
- 9:04Speaker 4: and absolutely burying him. Because, again, that is what we
- 9:07Speaker 4: love about the game. Paul Maurice said it. Bring your passion.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Bring the hate. Bring the love. But then A +
- 9:13Speaker 4: + to the Ottawa Center's players who fucking backed up.
- 9:17Speaker 4: They backed up their fans. They backed them up and
- 9:20Speaker 4: they played a hell of a hockey game. and we're
- 9:24Speaker 4: all over him. So that was just the best game
- 9:27Speaker 4: of the year and best game in recent memory for me,
- 9:31Speaker 4: a season game.
- 9:32Speaker 2: No, there's no question, Diddy.
- 9:33Speaker 1: For an October 21st game, I mean, that is playoff intensity.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Hockey did its best. And, Nate, it was interesting because
- 9:39Speaker 1: I was being asked by different people. I was on
- 9:41Speaker 1: the Fan 590 in Toronto. They said, you know, Brady's
- 9:43Speaker 1: the type, he never shies away from physicality. You think
- 9:45Speaker 1: he'll drop the gloves first five minutes? And I said, well,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I looked at the Sens roster. They don't have, like,
- 9:49Speaker 1: a designated enforcer. There's nobody, I think, who wants to
- 9:51Speaker 1: fight him. And necessarily... After every stoppage of play, you
- 9:54Speaker 1: saw scrums, face washes, et cetera. But Ridley Gregg, if
- 9:57Speaker 1: you're looking for a guy to antagonize him and piss
- 10:00Speaker 1: him off, as Tal said to me, and then I
- 10:02Speaker 1: said in the broadcast for you, Tal, last night, just
- 10:04Speaker 1: so you know, I see he's not being invited to
- 10:06Speaker 1: the Kachuk family barbecue. Ridley Gregg was doing his best
- 10:08Speaker 1: to stir it up.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I mean, they had team toughness last night. They did.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I was really impressed with Ottawa as a whole because
- 10:16Speaker 3: of how they were able to Anytime there was pushback
- 10:20Speaker 3: from Florida, they push right back at Florida. There was
- 10:23Speaker 3: no backing down at any instance. Watching Ridley Gregg, he
- 10:29Speaker 3: did his job to a tee last night because I
- 10:33Speaker 3: wanted to grab him through the TV a couple times.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Whenever I know and I get that feeling of when
- 10:39Speaker 3: that blood just starts to boil and I'm sitting watching
- 10:42Speaker 3: on the couch and I'm like, I can't sit down.
- 10:44Speaker 3: and it's usually one player I'm watching that's getting me
- 10:47Speaker 3: going like that, he's doing his job to a T. Like,
- 10:50Speaker 3: that guy made such an impact for Ottawa last night,
- 10:54Speaker 3: among other guys. I thought there were so many guys
- 10:56Speaker 3: that played well. I mean, him, Shane Pinto was really
- 10:59Speaker 3: good last night. I think he led all forwards in
- 11:02Speaker 3: ice time last night. He was unbelievable. And then Jake Sanderson.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I mean, I was going to have JD talk about
- 11:08Speaker 3: him a little bit because he played the position. But, like, dude,
- 11:11Speaker 3: this guy is– I'll take him. 100%. I still don't
- 11:15Speaker 3: think he gets enough credit in the league for how
- 11:17Speaker 3: good he is, but last night might have been one
- 11:20Speaker 3: of those nights where everyone's like, okay, he's back playing
- 11:24Speaker 3: with his team. He might be the most important guy
- 11:26Speaker 3: for the Sens, I think, on both sides of the
- 11:29Speaker 3: puck when you look at it. I don't know, JD,
- 11:32Speaker 3: but I wanted to hear your impression on him just
- 11:34Speaker 3: because you play the position you know.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's simple. I tweeted it today.
- 11:39Speaker 4: He's if Jacob Slavin and Quinn Hughes had a baby.
- 11:43Speaker 4: It's really like his IQ defensively is through the roof.
- 11:48Speaker 4: He's got one of the best sticks defensively. His feet,
- 11:52Speaker 4: last year he led the league in speed bursts in
- 11:55Speaker 4: terms of from a defenseman, which I know people are like, well,
- 11:57Speaker 4: what's that? It's just his first three steps are so impactful,
- 12:01Speaker 4: and he's not necessarily like this. Doesn't look like he's
- 12:04Speaker 4: a super high-end speedy guy, but he's so fast. He
- 12:08Speaker 4: can play physical. He's amazing offensively. That pass he made
- 12:11Speaker 4: to Timmy Stutzla, was incredible. Don't get me started on
- 12:14Speaker 4: Timmy Stutzla. I love every, this kid's in superstar mode.
- 12:18Speaker 4: He's entering, you know, he's entering Timmy God mode. But yeah,
- 12:23Speaker 4: Jake Sanderson is absolutely incredible. He's not talked about enough.
- 12:28Speaker 4: He's one of the more underrated D-men in the NHL.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I have him, I had him this year in my,
- 12:34Speaker 4: they want us to do top 20. I have him
- 12:36Speaker 4: in like the top 10 best D in the NHL. Wow.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Easily.
- 12:39Speaker 4: And I, people were like, Jake Sanderson, like go watch
- 12:41Speaker 4: him play.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I agree.
- 12:43Speaker 4: He is, since I played against him at the Olympics,
- 12:46Speaker 4: and I watched him and was like, whoa, this kid's
- 12:49Speaker 4: going to be like a stud.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And he's gotten better.
- 12:53Speaker 4: And, I mean, when him and Shabbat are in the lineup,
- 12:56Speaker 4: this is a really, really tough team, a tough out.
- 12:59Speaker 4: But he is so good. This team is a lot
- 13:02Speaker 4: better than I think people thought. I had them, I
- 13:05Speaker 4: think I had them make in the playoffs this year.
- 13:06Speaker 6: You did.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Because I think Travis Green.
- 13:07Speaker 3: You did.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Travis Green doesn't get enough credit, but listen, Jake Sanderson's
- 13:11Speaker 4: your best player. Um, Tim Stutzel is a close second, but,
- 13:15Speaker 4: but Jake Sanderson was, and he was all over the
- 13:19Speaker 4: ice last night. And I'm surprised though. The question to you,
- 13:22Speaker 4: Nate was, you said really, really Greg was the one
- 13:25Speaker 4: that you wanted to grab. You never feel that way
- 13:27Speaker 4: about Matthew, like Matthew. I don't understand.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I listen.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I love what he does for the game. I think
- 13:33Speaker 4: he's so incredibly skilled. I don't understand how he gets
- 13:35Speaker 4: let off the hook so much. Like, I don't understand
- 13:38Speaker 4: how guys don't jump them every game. Like not, not
- 13:41Speaker 4: to say like, cause he's so effective. Like, it's not
- 13:43Speaker 4: like a knock on him, but he's so effective. Like,
- 13:45Speaker 4: I would jump him every game.
- 13:47Speaker 2: No, Matthew.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah, every game. Pump his eyes shut. Not me, but
- 13:54Speaker 4: like whoever's the tough guy.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Not me. I'm going to be chilling on the bench.
- 13:58Speaker 3: He is that guy because I remember playing against him
- 14:00Speaker 3: when he was in Calgary. I wanted to do that.
- 14:01Speaker 3: But he's so effective at his job, like Ridley Gregg
- 14:04Speaker 3: last night, that you– waste your energy trying to go
- 14:08Speaker 3: at him a little bit. Cause you know that he's
- 14:10Speaker 3: probably going to end up skating away or make you
- 14:12Speaker 3: look like an idiot. And then you're going to get
- 14:13Speaker 3: two minutes. So that's why guys just get so angry
- 14:15Speaker 3: and you can't do anything because they're just good at it.
- 14:18Speaker 3: But like, I mean him, him and I mean him
- 14:20Speaker 3: and Brady, like you said, they, they're the bash brothers, man.
- 14:23Speaker 3: It's like, they don't care. They embrace it, man.
- 14:27Speaker 2: They're awesome. They're good. Good for the game.
- 14:30Speaker 1: They do definitely embrace it. And it was obviously as
- 14:32Speaker 1: good a night as you could hope for Ottawa.
- 14:34Speaker 2: And to J.D.
- 14:34Speaker 1: 's point about Travis Green, just got a multi-year contract extension.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So clearly, Steve Stahos and Dave Poole and those guys
- 14:40Speaker 1: realize what he's done. I was joking about him with him.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He goes, yeah, five years. It's a long time in Kanata.
- 14:44Speaker 4: So he's definitely embraced it. That's a long time at
- 14:47Speaker 4: the Brook Street Hotel.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Exactly. Well, that is where we stayed. So it's funny
- 14:51Speaker 1: you mentioned it. One road in, one road out. So
- 14:55Speaker 1: two years ago, when I first started the Amazon gig,
- 14:57Speaker 1: we were right downtown. So there's the, I think the Fairmont,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think it's the Westin. And I said, this is amazing.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I feel so Canadian.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You walk out, there's the Rideau Canal. My dad's like,
- 15:05Speaker 1: go see the Eternal Flame, the Commonwealth, House of Commons.
- 15:07Speaker 1: But then it's an hour and 10 to get to
- 15:09Speaker 1: the cave.
- 15:09Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 15:10Speaker 1: You go, no, no, no, we can't do this again.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Then there was a different hotel. It wasn't as good.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And they go, no, we got to go Brook Street
- 15:14Speaker 1: because that's the one. That's what the players say. The
- 15:16Speaker 1: coaches say, okay. But there's nothing around there, JD. Maybe
- 15:19Speaker 1: I would have seen Matthew Kachuk at the hotel bar,
- 15:22Speaker 1: but I had to walk to Tim Hortons to get
- 15:24Speaker 1: lunch yesterday. There is a Moxie's. Funny you mentioned, Nate,
- 15:27Speaker 1: the boys went for a drink at Moxie's after the game.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I went back to the hotel.
- 15:30Speaker 4: There is a great little restaurant in that shopping, in
- 15:33Speaker 4: that strip mall there. It's like a little gastropub. And
- 15:36Speaker 4: it's really good. Yeah, there's some good spots. I mean, yeah,
- 15:40Speaker 4: there's like a Texas Roadhouse there, too, which is crazy,
- 15:44Speaker 4: which I've been in late night.
- 15:46Speaker 1: My return trip to Ottawa, I think, is January 20th.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So I'm running down Gastropub for the next time I'm
- 15:51Speaker 1: in Ottawa.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Yeah, just go into that area where, like, I think
- 15:54Speaker 4: it's a Texas Roadhouse or that, like, Montana Steakhouse, whatever
- 15:57Speaker 4: the fucking thing is by the Moxies.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Walk around that strip mall.
- 16:01Speaker 4: You'll run into, like, this little, it's like a 10-table place.
- 16:04Speaker 2: It's really good. It might not even be there.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Who knows?
- 16:07Speaker 4: In this economy.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Ottawa's over teams for five months.
- 16:12Speaker 1: No, I was going to say, Nate knows it well.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Ottawa's dominant victory did come at a cost.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And all of us were like, oh, God. Linus Omer
- 16:18Speaker 2: gets a win.
- 16:19Speaker 1: He's 7-1. He's had a fantastic start to the year.
- 16:22Speaker 1: But once he was down and not getting up immediately
- 16:24Speaker 1: and told the referee immediately and they motioned the training staff,
- 16:27Speaker 1: a lower body injury, and he's an injured reserve.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Nate, I saw firsthand how bad Sam Harrison was for
- 16:34Speaker 2: the Flyers last year.
- 16:36Speaker 1: If you're trusting in Sam Harrison to turn this sucker around,
- 16:39Speaker 1: I would be very concerned right now if the Ottawa Senators.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yes and no. And I'll say yes because obviously, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 3: but I just think the way that Ottawa plays defense
- 16:50Speaker 3: and how that they are, how they're coached, I'm optimistic
- 16:56Speaker 3: for them that they can keep their heads above water
- 16:59Speaker 3: because of the way that they play. But I don't
- 17:01Speaker 3: know if Urson is going to be, you know, I
- 17:04Speaker 3: don't know how long it's going to last his stretch.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Like how many games can he play in a row
- 17:08Speaker 3: where he could be consistent and help them win? That
- 17:11Speaker 3: would be the question mark. But as far as, like, team-wise, like,
- 17:16Speaker 3: they play the right way where, you know, they can
- 17:19Speaker 3: win hockey games because of their system. And, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 3: the way they play together, I mean, last night was
- 17:26Speaker 3: a perfect example of that, playing against a team like Florida.
- 17:28Speaker 3: And they took it to them, and they didn't give
- 17:30Speaker 3: Florida anything. Like, they were really good last night. So
- 17:34Speaker 3: I don't know, JD. For me, it's not a huge
- 17:37Speaker 3: concern with the way they play.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a tough... I mean, to your point, I
- 17:46Speaker 4: agree with the.
- 17:48Speaker 4: I agree with the fact that Travis Green's system and
- 17:51Speaker 4: their defensive structure, the way they clog up the middle,
- 17:54Speaker 4: they really limit chances. They limit rush chances. I mean,
- 17:57Speaker 4: it's one of the best in the league, if not
- 17:58Speaker 4: the best. But a huge reason why. I mean, he
- 18:01Speaker 4: hasn't given up more than.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Two goals all season long.
- 18:06Speaker 4: As good as a defensive structure is, you need a
- 18:08Speaker 4: fucker back there making those saves.
- 18:10Speaker 3: And I don't know if.
- 18:11Speaker 4: I don't know if Samuel Harrison and Jonas Johansson is
- 18:14Speaker 4: going to be at long-term.
- 18:16Speaker 1: They're not.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Especially being on IR.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And then, you know, my immediate reaction and my knee
- 18:20Speaker 4: jerk when you say on IR, I go, oh, what
- 18:23Speaker 4: about Hellebuck? And I went, oh, wait, they're in Canada.
- 18:24Speaker 4: There's no way Hellebuck could go there. So I'm sitting
- 18:29Speaker 4: there and I'm like, it could be the best part
- 18:33Speaker 4: about this is it's early enough in the season. And
- 18:36Speaker 4: they also have kind of got enough wins under their
- 18:39Speaker 4: belt early.
- 18:40Speaker 2: They banked some points.
- 18:41Speaker 4: But it's a hard division in the Atlantic, and you
- 18:44Speaker 4: don't want to give up an inch, especially the way
- 18:47Speaker 4: Tampa's playing, Boston, Toronto now looks on fire. Like, it's worrisome,
- 18:53Speaker 4: you know, like when you're saying that Montreal is kind
- 18:55Speaker 4: of playing the worst out of that group. And, well,
- 18:57Speaker 4: you know, I forgot about Buffalo, but I don't have
- 18:59Speaker 4: Buffalo making the playoffs. But, yeah, I hope it's not
- 19:03Speaker 4: too bad because anytime you see that non-contact injury where
- 19:06Speaker 4: he goes down and he just kicks the pad out
- 19:08Speaker 4: and it's an immediate reaction, you're like, oh, no. Oh, no,
- 19:12Speaker 4: because he's had some injury problems already and mental health
- 19:15Speaker 4: struggles and stuff like that.
- 19:17Speaker 2: So, I don't know.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Maybe Arison can come in and be the stud we need.
- 19:23Speaker 4: But I know Adnan absolutely hates his guts.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Two years ago, he was not bad for the Flyers.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Last year, he was atrocious.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I got to tell you right now, he was awful.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And I do not see this turning around. By the way,
- 19:35Speaker 1: the opposite of awful is, Is there good news? We
- 19:39Speaker 1: have Chicken Parm coming up today. Our special guest, Ray Ferraro,
- 19:42Speaker 1: for the penultimate guest on NHL Unscripted. Ray is going
- 19:45Speaker 1: to be awesome. Obviously, the lead ESPN analyst with Sean McDonough.
- 19:47Speaker 1: We'll get Ray's thoughts on what he thinks Sam Harrison
- 19:49Speaker 1: can do. We'll also ask Ray about McJesus Freak. Connor
- 19:52Speaker 1: McDavid's been unbelievable. 23 points in his first eight games.
- 19:56Speaker 1: He got to 20 points in the fewest games to
- 19:58Speaker 1: start a season since Mario Lemieux in 95-96. Entering Thursday's games,
- 20:03Speaker 1: 26 points in nine games. He's on pace for 242
- 20:07Speaker 1: over 84 games. 20 assists in nine games. The fewest
- 20:11Speaker 1: games to reach that mark in hockey history. JD, his
- 20:14Speaker 1: career high is 153. He's the only player to get
- 20:17Speaker 1: to 150. And Wayne and Mario are the only guys
- 20:20Speaker 1: to reach 160 in a season. Mario did it four times.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Gretzky did it nine times. Of course, it was a
- 20:25Speaker 1: different era of hockey. How about Conor McDavid? Forget about
- 20:27Speaker 1: that he's on pace for 240. How about just 160 points?
- 20:31Speaker 1: In today's NHL, to me, that would be unbelievable.
- 20:33Speaker 4: The fact that we're casually discussing Conor probably hitting 170,
- 20:36Speaker 4: 180 points is stupid.
- 20:37Speaker 3: He is....
- 20:43Speaker 4: It's funny to say that I still think what he's
- 20:47Speaker 4: doing is underappreciated in the NHL by fans and all
- 20:50Speaker 4: of us and to sit back and actually watch him
- 20:53Speaker 4: on a night to night basis and, you know, take
- 20:56Speaker 4: out the, you know, some of the defensive lapses, but
- 20:59Speaker 4: offensively what he does with the puck and what he
- 21:02Speaker 4: can do. I mean, I, I've said it individually. He's
- 21:04Speaker 4: the best player of all time now in my mind,
- 21:07Speaker 4: you know, now will he be the best player of
- 21:10Speaker 4: all time when it's all said and done with Stanley
- 21:12Speaker 4: cups and things like that.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I don't know. I think he will be by the time.
- 21:15Speaker 4: His career is over, but individually there's not a better
- 21:19Speaker 4: player ever. And I know we can talk Wayne and
- 21:22Speaker 4: what Wano did different times back then.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't compare eras.
- 21:27Speaker 4: I'm just, and maybe it's recency bias. And I'm just,
- 21:31Speaker 4: what I'm seeing right now is, is he is head
- 21:35Speaker 4: and shoulders, just like Wayne was just like Mario was
- 21:38Speaker 4: of the, of the top five players in the NHL.
- 21:42Speaker 4: And again, yes, it's a different era. There's more tools
- 21:45Speaker 4: and stuff like that, but everybody's much better. Everybody is
- 21:49Speaker 4: much better. I know they're not skating and shitty CCM
- 21:51Speaker 4: tax skates and carrying around wooden sticks.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But saving a beauty, no butterfly. Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 4: But the goalies didn't go down and they stood up
- 22:00Speaker 4: and you could score on the ice and here you're,
- 22:03Speaker 4: you know, it's, it's a way different game than it was.
- 22:06Speaker 4: So I think, records and legends are made to be broken.
- 22:10Speaker 4: I think that's the beautiful thing about sports, and I
- 22:12Speaker 4: think it would be wrong to not even have a
- 22:16Speaker 4: serious conversation if him is the greatest of all time
- 22:19Speaker 4: individually right now.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I was looking at the math of this, and
- 22:26Speaker 3: I'm not a big math guy, but he needs 134
- 22:29Speaker 3: more points in 75 games left, and that would get
- 22:32Speaker 3: him 160 points, which is 1.79 points per game, which
- 22:40Speaker 3: for him... It's easy. That's what I mean.
- 22:43Speaker 4: He's going to have three five-point games in that.
- 22:46Speaker 3: When you look at it like that, it's like he
- 22:47Speaker 3: is a lock to get over 160 points.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Not to mention.
- 22:51Speaker 2: A lock.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Not to mention, he's playing Calgary a bunch more times.
- 22:56Speaker 4: He's playing Vancouver. Those are their absolute dog water.
- 23:00Speaker 3: LA, he walks all over LA every time.
- 23:02Speaker 4: LA, Anaheim gives up a lot. It's like the Pacific is.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Going to give him.
- 23:06Speaker 4: 120 this year.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I wouldn't be surprised if he gets... I think he
- 23:13Speaker 3: could get 180 plus.
- 23:14Speaker 4: What's your minimum? What do you think he's going to
- 23:17Speaker 4: get to that's a high? I think 175 he's getting.
- 23:19Speaker 2: My high... Healthy. Healthy I think is.
- 23:21Speaker 3: 180 to 185, I think you can get in that range.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I really do.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Adnan, Tal?
- 23:30Speaker 1: I was going to say, a minimum of 160, 165.
- 23:33Speaker 4: You're a grandiose, hyperbolic person.
- 23:37Speaker 2: What do you got?
- 23:39Speaker 6: 200?
- 23:39Speaker 3: 190 points.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Tal? I'd say, I mean, 170.
- 23:43Speaker 5: He should hit 170, which I got to look up
- 23:46Speaker 5: when's the last time someone did that. Probably Mario, his
- 23:48Speaker 5: 199 season. which was almost 40 years ago.
- 23:52Speaker 2: 40 years ago. It's just nuts. It's unbelievable.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Meantime, dramatic soap operas continue. The Jets expected to end
- 24:01Speaker 1: the suspension of holdout goaltender Connor Hellebuck. I remember saying
- 24:05Speaker 1: this to some of the Jets media. We were there
- 24:07Speaker 1: week two, Avalanche Jets. I'm like, you know, what if
- 24:08Speaker 1: he changes his mind at some point? Everyone's like, I
- 24:10Speaker 1: think that ship has sailed. I'm like, well, actually, the
- 24:13Speaker 1: three-time Vesta winner refused to show up for Jets training
- 24:15Speaker 1: camp after requesting a trade over the summer, so the
- 24:17Speaker 1: Jets suspend him. He was losing almost $ 39, 000 a day.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Every day you wake up, you go, I just lost.
- 24:24Speaker 4: $ 40, 000.
- 24:24Speaker 1: But because the CBA limits the length of these types
- 24:27Speaker 1: of suspensions, he could be back with the team as
- 24:29Speaker 1: soon as this Friday. Now, when asked about it, Winnipeg's captain,
- 24:32Speaker 1: Adam Lowry, said, if he does show, conversations are going
- 24:36Speaker 1: to have to happen. Complicating things, Nate, is the fact
- 24:38Speaker 1: Winnipeg started 4-2-2 without Hellebuck, and Stu Skinner has filled
- 24:42Speaker 1: in admirably. So what do the Jets do?
- 24:46Speaker 3: Well, they're... They kind of have the upper hand, and
- 24:49Speaker 3: we talked about that before, Ray, was if the Jets
- 24:52Speaker 3: get off to a good start and they're not in
- 24:56Speaker 3: a serious need of goaltending, which they really haven't been.
- 24:59Speaker 3: They've been playing pretty good hockey. They've been getting good contributions.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Stu Skinner's been pretty solid.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Skin Stu.
- 25:05Speaker 3: And now it's, yeah, like you said, I think the
- 25:08Speaker 3: big thing is... Yeah, they're going to have to have
- 25:11Speaker 3: some closed-door conversations because, I mean, when you have a
- 25:15Speaker 3: guy coming back that wanted out, I mean, that's– yeah,
- 25:18Speaker 3: like I played with Adam Lowry. I played there. So
- 25:22Speaker 3: I know the ins and outs of those guys' relationships
- 25:25Speaker 3: and how close and how long they played together. So
- 25:27Speaker 3: this is an awkward situation. And how can Connor Hellebuck
- 25:33Speaker 3: come back to work as a professional and– do his job,
- 25:39Speaker 3: much like, I guess you could say Dylan Larkin, like
- 25:41Speaker 3: Dylan Larkin has showed up and you got to give
- 25:43Speaker 3: him a little respect because the way he's come back
- 25:46Speaker 3: and he's done his job and worked hard and still
- 25:49Speaker 3: been a good teammate. I mean, that's, that's what it is.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Can you be a good teammate or are you going to,
- 25:53Speaker 3: you know, are you going to be, or are you
- 25:55Speaker 3: going to be selfish about things and make this all
- 25:57Speaker 3: about you when really, I mean, it is, but at the,
- 25:59Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you have to come
- 26:00Speaker 3: in and you got to be a good teammate, JD,
- 26:02Speaker 3: because the situation is, I don't know. I think they
- 26:07Speaker 3: still have to trade him and they're going to eventually,
- 26:11Speaker 3: but it's a lock, but it's, you know, this is
- 26:14Speaker 3: going to be, how are they going to do it
- 26:16Speaker 3: with him coming back? Like, that's going to be the
- 26:19Speaker 3: awkward situation.
- 26:20Speaker 4: He's stepped foot in that arena until he's traded with
- 26:25Speaker 4: his bag for the last time. Like, it's, I think we,
- 26:29Speaker 4: I listened to the full Adam Lowry interview, and it
- 26:32Speaker 4: was taken out of context. He said, like, after that, um,
- 26:37Speaker 4: we're going to have to have conversations. It was very
- 26:39Speaker 4: much supportive. Like we love them. Listen, it's, we understand
- 26:42Speaker 4: it's a business and we get it. Um, but it's
- 26:45Speaker 4: like things have happened and we're carrying on with our season.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Like it's just, that is what it is. Like he's like,
- 26:49Speaker 4: but he said, it's going to be water under the bridge.
- 26:51Speaker 4: If he comes back now, they don't want him back. Uh,
- 26:55Speaker 4: shovel day off does not want him back. I, we,
- 26:58Speaker 4: I think Kaplan reported Emily Kaplan about, they're going to
- 27:01Speaker 4: pay him to stay home. And I think they're just
- 27:03Speaker 4: going to say, fuck you. And he's going to, he's
- 27:05Speaker 4: skating in Michigan. Um, I don't think they want him anymore.
- 27:09Speaker 4: And I think the issue with that is that both
- 27:14Speaker 4: parties eventually are going to start to get hurt.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Do I think Winnipeg has more to lose?
- 27:21Speaker 3: No.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I think Conor does because Conor, we saw what happened
- 27:25Speaker 4: with Swayman when he sat out early without those contract talks.
- 27:29Speaker 2: He was rusty.
- 27:31Speaker 4: So now teams, the longer this goes, teams are like,
- 27:33Speaker 4: we want him. But at what price? Because every minute
- 27:36Speaker 4: he's not in an NHL game and he's a guy
- 27:38Speaker 4: that needs to play a lot. He is not, you know,
- 27:42Speaker 4: he's not getting the reps, the touches, right? And it's
- 27:46Speaker 4: going to you're a contending team. You're going to bring
- 27:48Speaker 4: him back at halfway through the year when you need
- 27:51Speaker 4: to get points. And he's he needs to figure it out. Like,
- 27:54Speaker 4: so the trade needs to happen next couple of weeks
- 27:57Speaker 4: or I'm like, you wait till next summer. And listen,
- 28:00Speaker 4: that would be the fucking ultimate if they just bury him.
- 28:05Speaker 2: And just wait an entire season of no Connor Hellebuck.
- 28:08Speaker 4: I mean, to me, to my, like, if I'm shoveled up, he's,
- 28:11Speaker 4: he's firmly put the line in the sand that like,
- 28:14Speaker 4: unless I get what I want, you ain't going anywhere
- 28:19Speaker 4: and they're fine to pay him. He's for sure cleared
- 28:22Speaker 4: this with ownership. And if I'm the owner, I'm like,
- 28:24Speaker 4: I'll pay him, but we're going to fucking burn a
- 28:27Speaker 4: year of his career.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Well, look at Dylan Larkin. He's had to add more teams.
- 28:32Speaker 3: It's almost like you're like.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Dylan Larkin, that was stupid.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I know, but still, though, this is the same situation
- 28:37Speaker 3: where does Connor Hellebuck.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Be like, huh?
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yeah, they can always... You know this, Nate. We've been
- 28:43Speaker 4: in the CBA talks. The owners can always outweigh you
- 28:47Speaker 4: because your career has a shelf life. Theirs doesn't in
- 28:51Speaker 4: being an owner. They don't give a shit. They give
- 28:53Speaker 4: a shit, but I'm saying in terms of business decisions...
- 28:58Speaker 4: I mean, what's it to them if it really doesn't
- 29:01Speaker 4: bug them and they're winning? To your point, 4-2-2, they
- 29:04Speaker 4: end up still sneaking into the playoffs or getting close.
- 29:07Speaker 4: And if they lose, they get a first overall pick
- 29:09Speaker 4: and they can still trade Connor Hellebuck. It's like, to them,
- 29:14Speaker 4: they're like, we have multiple options out of this and
- 29:17Speaker 4: the only downfall is we have to pay you. But
- 29:20Speaker 4: you have your career that is dwindling away because he's
- 29:25Speaker 4: older as well. So there's a year out of your career.
- 29:27Speaker 4: So to me, I'm sure he's fine taking the money,
- 29:30Speaker 4: but if he really wants to play, I'm sure this
- 29:32Speaker 4: is bugging him heavily.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Tal, your thoughts on the whole situation?
- 29:36Speaker 5: Just going to mention the Jets have lost four out
- 29:38Speaker 5: of their last five heading into Dallas Thursday night, and
- 29:41Speaker 5: they have the Heritage Classic this weekend.
- 29:44Speaker 4: The big outdoor game.
- 29:45Speaker 5: They don't need this hellabic, you know, dark cloud hovering
- 29:49Speaker 5: over them right now.
- 29:50Speaker 2: And the whole thing for.
- 29:51Speaker 5: Me just reeks of George Costanza chewing out his boss
- 29:54Speaker 5: and quitting and then coming back the next day like
- 29:56Speaker 5: nothing happened.
- 29:57Speaker 2: That didn't go well for old George.
- 29:59Speaker 5: One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes, he literally is walking
- 30:01Speaker 5: down the hall and everyone's saying, go to hell.
- 30:04Speaker 4: So that's not going well.
- 30:05Speaker 1: You got to step it up a notch.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:07Speaker 5: It's not good. I don't think this situation is good.
- 30:09Speaker 5: They need to trade Hellebuck quickly, soon.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Based infamously on Larry David quitting Saturday Night Live, telling
- 30:17Speaker 1: Dick Ebersole he was done, and then he went home
- 30:19Speaker 1: and goes, no, I need a job. What am I doing?
- 30:21Speaker 1: He just showed up to Saturday Night Live next week,
- 30:23Speaker 1: still as a writer, after telling off Dick Ebersole.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Go ahead, J.D.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Well, what I was going to say was, I was
- 30:29Speaker 4: joking about it on the network today, is that When
- 30:32Speaker 4: Nathan McKinnon missed that shot at the Olympics, it sent
- 30:35Speaker 4: us in an alternate timeline and universe where just imagine
- 30:40Speaker 4: if he had scored that goal. Hellebuck would still be
- 30:42Speaker 4: in Winnipeg. Brady Kachuk would still be in Ottawa. Larkin
- 30:48Speaker 4: would still be happy in Detroit. Detroit might have made
- 30:51Speaker 4: the playoffs, and they might have won the cup last year.
- 30:55Speaker 4: Everything got thrown off. Everything's in a blender. Babcock wouldn't
- 30:58Speaker 4: be in the league anymore. It's just crazy. When you
- 31:01Speaker 4: think about it, we're on a completely, the CERN time collider.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Whatever, exploded.
- 31:08Speaker 4: The world ended and we're in an alternate dimension.
- 31:11Speaker 3: You're not wrong. You're not wrong.
- 31:13Speaker 2: You really think about it. Freaks me out, man.
- 31:15Speaker 1: The USA group chat messes things up. Ray Farrar is
- 31:18Speaker 1: coming up in minutes, but first, one more thought. Between
- 31:21Speaker 1: Brady Kachuk's return to Ottawa with the Panthers, Gavin McKenna's
- 31:24Speaker 1: up-and-down season so far with the Leafs, and Dylan Larkin,
- 31:26Speaker 1: as we've discussed... Plenty to talk about in the Atlantic Division.
- 31:29Speaker 1: How about the Bruins, Nate? After plenty suggested they'd miss
- 31:32Speaker 1: the playoffs, they sit atop the division. 7-2-1 record, a
- 31:36Speaker 1: plus-14 goal differential that ranks second in the league.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Are the Bs for real?
- 31:41Speaker 3: I think they are. This is another team that's very
- 31:44Speaker 3: well coached. I've talked about it before. Marco Sturm, He
- 31:50Speaker 3: has a standard that needs to be set by all
- 31:52Speaker 3: the players, and everyone's got to play good defense. And
- 31:55Speaker 3: you've seen it from David Pasternak, I think, the most,
- 31:58Speaker 3: how he's played the last couple years. And I think
- 32:01Speaker 3: you look at their team, too. Obviously, the big factor
- 32:04Speaker 3: is Jeremy Swayman and how good he's been for them.
- 32:08Speaker 3: He's a top three goaltender, top five goaltender in this league,
- 32:11Speaker 3: I think, no question. And then they're getting depth scoring.
- 32:14Speaker 3: These young guys are coming to the forefront, like Frazier, Minton, Higgins, Patras,
- 32:20Speaker 3: these guys have all contributed, along.
- 32:22Speaker 2: With fucking Matthew Poitras.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Come on down, baby. Yeah, Posta and these other guys.
- 32:26Speaker 3: And their special teams, I guess it's been pretty good.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Not unbelievable, but their goal differential is tops in the league,
- 32:35Speaker 3: one of the tops in the league, and just goes
- 32:36Speaker 3: to show you how good they are five on five
- 32:38Speaker 3: and that they're a team to be reckoned with this season.
- 32:41Speaker 3: It's just the Bruins, every year they're just one of
- 32:45Speaker 3: those organizations that just knows how to win. And, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 3: I think Marco Sturm has to, you got to give
- 32:51Speaker 3: him a lot of credit for that.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Exactly, Marco.
- 32:54Speaker 4: I mean, he scratches the door off after he's keeping
- 32:59Speaker 4: that B's culture, that accountability in high regard. I mean,
- 33:04Speaker 4: Frederick Brunette comes in on the back end. I mean,
- 33:07Speaker 4: everybody that's come in out of the AHL or they've
- 33:11Speaker 4: signed is all paid dividends. I mean, Fraser Mitton is...
- 33:16Speaker 4: being lauded as a mini Datsuk, which I think that's
- 33:18Speaker 4: a little bit too high praise, but I think he's
- 33:21Speaker 4: turning into a really good 2C. You know, Ziki, sorry, Ziki,
- 33:27Speaker 4: I'm comparing Zaka and Geeky together. Geeky, Zaka, it's just
- 33:31Speaker 4: there's so much to like about this team. They sign
- 33:34Speaker 4: a big piece, you know, Murat Husanidinov, who I think
- 33:39Speaker 4: is very underrated as well. So there's so many good
- 33:43Speaker 4: little pieces, not household names, but Marco Sturm deserves all
- 33:47Speaker 4: the credit because ex-player should have won the Jack Adams
- 33:51Speaker 4: last year, got screwed out of it.
- 33:54Speaker 2: But he might do it this year.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Well, they love him in Germany. There's no question about that.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Marco Sturm, turning.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Heads right now in Boston.
- 34:01Speaker 1: All right. Still to come here on NHL Unscripted, we're
- 34:04Speaker 1: going to talk to Chicken Parham.
- 34:05Speaker 2: That's right.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Ray Ferraro, terrific player, excellent analyst all these years in ESPN.
- 34:10Speaker 1: His early thoughts on what he's seeing in the NHL.
- 34:13Speaker 2: All the more coming up here on Unscripted.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Our next guest, drafted in the fifth round, 88th overall
- 34:31Speaker 1: by the Hartford Whalers in the 1982 NHL Draft, went
- 34:33Speaker 1: on to score 408 goals, 898 points, 1,258 NHL games. Whalers, Islanders,
- 34:35Speaker 1: Rangers and Kings, Thrashers and Blues.
- 34:44Speaker 2: And since retiring as.
- 34:45Speaker 1: A player, he has become one of the most prominent
- 34:47Speaker 1: TV analysts in the game, providing insight for ESPN, NBC, TSN,
- 34:52Speaker 1: and Rogers. Chicken Parm, as John Butcher, my old friend
- 34:54Speaker 1: and colleague, dubbed him. It is Ray Ferraro.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Ray, good to see you, man.
- 34:57Speaker 6: How are you guys doing?
- 35:01Speaker 7: It's a long intro, man. A lot of teams. A
- 35:03Speaker 7: lot of teams.
- 35:04Speaker 2: We're running out of tape. And that's the interview. I
- 35:06Speaker 2: can feel you there.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I feel you there.
- 35:08Speaker 2: He's accomplished a lot in his wonderful career.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Ray, I was in Ottawa last night for that game,
- 35:12Speaker 1: seeing Brady Kachok and the Panthers return. So much for
- 35:15Speaker 1: Canadians being kind and polite and genteel. They gave it
- 35:18Speaker 1: to Brady the entire game in a 5-1 win. Just
- 35:20Speaker 1: your takeaway on that night. I think it was the
- 35:22Speaker 1: game of the year so far.
- 35:24Speaker 6: It's funny, isn't it? When there's a little bit of venom,
- 35:30Speaker 6: a little bit of antagonism, the game becomes better.
- 35:36Speaker 7: As much as.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Fighting has gone out of the game and the game's changed,
- 35:41Speaker 6: certainly since I played, but the best games always have bite. I, the,
- 35:48Speaker 6: the skill of the players is, is undeniable, but the,
- 35:53Speaker 6: at the core of the game, there's, there's a, you know,
- 35:55Speaker 6: there's a, a black hat in the game. There's a
- 35:58Speaker 6: villain there's, and that's what Brady was last night. I,
- 36:01Speaker 6: you know, a couple of years ago, I did that
- 36:03Speaker 6: four nations game in Montreal on the Saturday night.
- 36:07Speaker 7: And the, you know, the, the good.
- 36:10Speaker 6: Verse evil, the right verse wrong, whatever it was, that's
- 36:14Speaker 6: what made the game.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:16Speaker 6: And so that's how the fans in Ottawa should have
- 36:20Speaker 6: been last night. Like they got, you know, the guy
- 36:22Speaker 6: wanted to leave and that's, and they should have appreciated
- 36:26Speaker 6: Brady's day in Ottawa because it was really good. And,
- 36:31Speaker 6: and that's all good. It was, it was awesome. I,
- 36:34Speaker 6: it was old, a little bit old time last night.
- 36:37Speaker 4: You know, I want to, touch on that game for
- 36:39Speaker 4: you as an analyst because we I was on NHL
- 36:42Speaker 4: last night Corey Schneider asked John Forslund you know about
- 36:45Speaker 4: calling a game like that and what's your methodology like
- 36:49Speaker 4: do you try to sometimes just sit back and less
- 36:51Speaker 4: is more and let the crowd noise take over let
- 36:54Speaker 4: the passion the fan base because you don't want to
- 36:56Speaker 4: spoil that moment and I've asked that question to Randy
- 36:59Speaker 4: Hahn and some other guys in league but I like
- 37:00Speaker 4: asking guys between the benches because your color commentary provides
- 37:04Speaker 4: so much insight to the game when you're in a
- 37:06Speaker 4: game like that, that there's that much hate, you talk
- 37:09Speaker 4: about the four nations, where does your mind go? Where's
- 37:12Speaker 4: your approach in that game for you?
- 37:15Speaker 6: It's, it's kind of hard, Jason, because what's difficult is
- 37:20Speaker 6: you get caught up in what the building's doing.
- 37:23Speaker 7: And there's so much you could say, but.
- 37:26Speaker 6: A lot of, a lot of it, you have to
- 37:29Speaker 6: make sure is a value and it's just not noise
- 37:33Speaker 6: on top of what's going on. Like when, Again, I'll
- 37:37Speaker 6: go back to that Four Nation game. When Matthew was
- 37:42Speaker 6: fighting right immediately, the only thing I can add to
- 37:47Speaker 6: that is that I hear Brady Kachuk say to Sam Bennett, hey, Benny,
- 37:52Speaker 6: we're going next whistle. That's the only thing really for
- 37:56Speaker 6: me to say. The pictures are telling the story. They're everything.
- 38:03Speaker 6: When there's a huge goal, it's so hard because you're
- 38:07Speaker 6: so excited. You want to get, you want to, you
- 38:09Speaker 6: want to add, you've got stuff to add, but you've
- 38:12Speaker 6: got to let the horn go, the crowd cheer, the,
- 38:16Speaker 6: like the pictures have to bring it to the people watching.
- 38:19Speaker 6: They don't, they don't want to hear you right then.
- 38:21Speaker 6: You got to take a half a step back. And
- 38:23Speaker 6: I think we were talking just a little bit about,
- 38:26Speaker 6: you know, about reps and, experience. And it's easier as
- 38:31Speaker 6: you go along to have that gut feel and go,
- 38:35Speaker 6: not yet, not yet, not yet.
- 38:37Speaker 7: Lay out, lay out. Okay. Now.
- 38:40Speaker 6: And when you start, it's, it's, you're just so excited.
- 38:43Speaker 6: I mean, it's the best, right? It's, it's the best
- 38:46Speaker 6: place to be. And, and, but you gotta, you gotta
- 38:48Speaker 6: zip it sometimes.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Yeah. I, I started this a couple of years ago.
- 38:52Speaker 3: You're just like JD. And I was at a broadcasting
- 38:55Speaker 3: camp actually with your son Landon. And I was going
- 38:58Speaker 3: to ask you, and we were talking about before the
- 39:00Speaker 3: show is when I hear both you guys, like when
- 39:03Speaker 3: I was in the room with him, I had to
- 39:04Speaker 3: do a double take because I thought it was you talking,
- 39:07Speaker 3: but it was, it was him. And you guys both
- 39:08Speaker 3: sound so similar. Is this, you know, he played just
- 39:12Speaker 3: like you did and now he's doing the same thing. Like,
- 39:14Speaker 3: are you giving him the same kind of insight all
- 39:16Speaker 3: the time? Cause now he's, you know, he's doing it.
- 39:18Speaker 3: He's doing a great job as well.
- 39:20Speaker 6: You know, uh, it is different Nate because like his
- 39:24Speaker 6: path has become, you know, my path and, I think
- 39:28Speaker 6: I learned, well, he used to have this phrase. I'd
- 39:32Speaker 6: be talking to him about the game. and you know
- 39:34Speaker 6: I want to help and I want we played the
- 39:36Speaker 6: same position and I was like hey you know on
- 39:39Speaker 6: this you could you know swing lower and all this
- 39:41Speaker 6: and he'd say I got it And which was his
- 39:45Speaker 6: code for enough, right? Like I've listened enough here and
- 39:50Speaker 6: I need to do this myself. The broadcasting thing's different,
- 39:54Speaker 6: I think, because as you guys know, when you're on
- 39:57Speaker 6: the air, there's so much going on that people don't see.
- 40:03Speaker 6: that it's never as tidy as it should be. You
- 40:07Speaker 6: got an audio issue. When you're doing it live, live
- 40:12Speaker 6: is different, of course, than when you're taping something. If
- 40:14Speaker 6: you screw up, you get to do it again. But
- 40:16Speaker 6: when you're live, you're worried about your timing. You're worried
- 40:20Speaker 6: about what you've noticed.
- 40:23Speaker 7: Is it important?
- 40:24Speaker 6: Can you get it out quick enough and get out
- 40:28Speaker 6: of it because you don't want to step on a goal?
- 40:31Speaker 3: And so.
- 40:32Speaker 6: And I still do. I still grew up like 25
- 40:35Speaker 6: years later and I'll say something. I'm like, man, I
- 40:39Speaker 6: wanted to wrap that up so much quicker. And I
- 40:42Speaker 6: just couldn't. I call it the exit ramp. I couldn't
- 40:45Speaker 6: find the exit ramp. It's like you're on the highway
- 40:47Speaker 6: and you're like, I got to get off there.
- 40:49Speaker 7: I'm in the wrong lane. And damn, I missed it.
- 40:52Speaker 3: And.
- 40:53Speaker 6: You got to circle around again. And so those things
- 40:56Speaker 6: I do help. We do sound very similar. I, I
- 40:59Speaker 6: have told them, don't say anything stupid because I got
- 41:02Speaker 6: enough of my own problems and I don't, I don't
- 41:05Speaker 6: need you contributing to my.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Do you hear what Ray said?
- 41:09Speaker 3: No, I'm sure. Yes.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Ray, I want to ask you like in your 25 years,
- 41:16Speaker 4: you know, around all this and, and, you know, is
- 41:19Speaker 4: there one truth that's kind of stood out for you?
- 41:22Speaker 4: You know, I had a great conversation with you at
- 41:25Speaker 4: the finals and you, you kind of gave me some
- 41:27Speaker 4: great insight along with Corey Schneider. We're sitting chatting and
- 41:30Speaker 4: something you told us that stuck with me since has been,
- 41:33Speaker 4: you know, the one thing you forget about being a broadcaster,
- 41:37Speaker 4: a color commentary is that the game is difficult. And
- 41:40Speaker 4: as an ex player, you really have to tow that line.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Is that, is that something that's maybe you're, one of
- 41:47Speaker 4: your more absolute truths that you tried to pass on
- 41:49Speaker 4: to Landon?
- 41:51Speaker 7: Two things.
- 41:52Speaker 6: One is that it is on TV or we're sitting
- 41:55Speaker 6: up above, you know, watching the game. You can see
- 41:59Speaker 6: the guy that's open and you're like, well, why doesn't
- 42:01Speaker 6: he just give it to him? Well, there's 10 other
- 42:04Speaker 6: guy or eight other guys on the ice between him
- 42:06Speaker 6: and his teammate. And they're all six foot two and
- 42:10Speaker 6: it's busy and the puck's bouncing and, it's fast.
- 42:14Speaker 7: And it like, it's way harder than it looks.
- 42:16Speaker 6: And I, I really try to remember that the, the
- 42:19Speaker 6: other thing is to just be fair. And I think
- 42:23Speaker 6: it's difficult only if you, this part, if you, if
- 42:27Speaker 6: you make it difficult, I've, I've tried, I mean, I've
- 42:31Speaker 6: got friends in the game, right? Like Andrew Brunette is,
- 42:34Speaker 6: probably my favorite teammate of all time. And we played
- 42:37Speaker 6: on a 14 win team. And if you can get
- 42:41Speaker 6: through that year without losing your mind, like you, you've
- 42:44Speaker 6: got some, like Bruno's just the best. So, um, I,
- 42:48Speaker 6: I try, I tried not to become, I don't want
- 42:53Speaker 6: these guys to be my friends, my, it's harder to
- 42:56Speaker 6: do the job when you have to critique somebody that's
- 43:00Speaker 6: your good buddy. And so I, I think it's imperative
- 43:07Speaker 6: to be fair to everything that you see. If somebody
- 43:11Speaker 6: makes a mistake, you critique the mistake, not the guy.
- 43:17Speaker 6: Because we've all, like you guys played a long time.
- 43:20Speaker 6: There's not a mistake out there that you've not made, right?
- 43:25Speaker 6: You play a perfect game and then you're sitting at
- 43:27Speaker 6: home thinking about it and you're like, yeah, I was
- 43:30Speaker 6: awesome tonight. I had a great game. man, I screwed
- 43:33Speaker 6: that breakout pass up. I missed a chance.
- 43:35Speaker 7: I lost a face-off.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Whatever it is, it's okay to critique the player, but fairness,
- 43:42Speaker 6: I think, is imperative. Those are the two things, I think,
- 43:47Speaker 6: that I keep closest when I do a game.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Ray, I was lucky enough to work at ESPN 2010
- 43:54Speaker 1: and 2019. The first thing I did upon moving to
- 43:56Speaker 1: Central Connecticut was look for some Whalers gear, and it
- 43:58Speaker 1: was not very hard to find.
- 43:59Speaker 3: Everywhere.
- 44:00Speaker 1: People still want to save the whale. There's reunions all
- 44:03Speaker 1: the time. And the list is impeccable. Yourself, Mike Liu,
- 44:06Speaker 1: Joel Quenville, Dean Everson, Ron Francis, Pat Burbeak, Dave Tippett,
- 44:09Speaker 1: Kevin Dineen. How remarkable is it how the whalers still
- 44:14Speaker 1: remain today? Like that team, it's indelible for so many teams.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Consider the fact, unfortunately, they didn't win a ton because
- 44:20Speaker 1: they were always having to face the Bruins and the
- 44:22Speaker 1: Habs in the playoffs.
- 44:24Speaker 6: Every year there was the old Adams division and there
- 44:27Speaker 6: was no way out of it except through those, through
- 44:30Speaker 6: those guys. And, you know, we were close, I think,
- 44:34Speaker 6: to being a really good team and we had some
- 44:38Speaker 6: ownership trouble. They sold the team and ownership went a
- 44:44Speaker 6: completely different direction. And the, you know, the first thing
- 44:49Speaker 6: was the, The thing that made us, we had all
- 44:52Speaker 6: these young guys coming along and I don't know, we
- 44:56Speaker 6: needed something. It was clear we needed something. And they
- 44:59Speaker 6: traded for Mike Liut. And we had this top end
- 45:03Speaker 6: goalie with a big personality that was, he was our
- 45:07Speaker 6: leader without question. And then it let us young guys
- 45:11Speaker 6: start to grow. And then at some point they decided
- 45:14Speaker 6: to trade Mike. That was the first one. Then Dave
- 45:19Speaker 6: Tippett went and then I went and then they traded
- 45:24Speaker 6: Ron Francis, which we always said, they, they always said
- 45:28Speaker 6: they were going to build a cup winner. They just
- 45:29Speaker 6: didn't tell us it was in Pittsburgh. And so they
- 45:32Speaker 6: traded Ronnie and Ulf to Pittsburgh. And then they, you know,
- 45:37Speaker 6: it's a small place. Hartford's not a big place. The
- 45:40Speaker 6: economics of today's game don't work in Hartford. And it's
- 45:43Speaker 6: a shame because it was awesome. I loved living there.
- 45:47Speaker 6: I love playing there. And I played the first seven
- 45:52Speaker 6: years of my career there, and I loved it.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Prior to, by the way, getting a job, I asked
- 45:57Speaker 1: Brian Burke, who was running the Leafs at the time,
- 45:58Speaker 1: where to live. And Burke, he said, Simmonsbury's very good, Avon,
- 46:02Speaker 1: West Harper. Those are very nice towns in Connecticut. I'm
- 46:04Speaker 1: sure you can explain that.
- 46:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I was Farmington, which was right next door to Avon.
- 46:10Speaker 7: Man, I loved it. It was awesome.
- 46:13Speaker 4: You know, I know one of your coaches when you
- 46:14Speaker 4: were there, Jay Leach, just passed.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Did you have any.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Do you have any good stories? You know, a lot
- 46:20Speaker 4: of the times when we talk to guys, we want
- 46:22Speaker 4: to keep the memory going. Some good stories about Jay Leach.
- 46:25Speaker 4: He was well-regarded in the hockey community.
- 46:28Speaker 6: I played on three teams where Jay was an assistant coach.
- 46:31Speaker 6: We started in Hartford and then I got traded, you know,
- 46:36Speaker 6: a couple of times and down the road, I ended
- 46:38Speaker 6: up in LA and then Jay got hired in LA
- 46:42Speaker 6: and then he In the expansion draft, I went to
- 46:44Speaker 6: Atlanta and Jay got hired in Atlanta. And so we
- 46:48Speaker 6: were laughing because we kept, and I said, I'm going
- 46:51Speaker 6: to go into the witness protection program so I can
- 46:54Speaker 6: get away from you. And Leachie was so funny. Like
- 46:59Speaker 6: what a great, great person. He loved what he was doing.
- 47:04Speaker 6: You know, we had the Boston little bit of accent
- 47:07Speaker 6: to him. So I mentioned earlier about the 14 win team.
- 47:12Speaker 6: And I forget who we were playing, and we had
- 47:15Speaker 6: our pregame meeting, and it was against one of the
- 47:18Speaker 6: better teams in the league.
- 47:19Speaker 7: So things weren't looking good for the old thrashers that day.
- 47:23Speaker 6: And so we had a pregame meeting, and Leachie somehow,
- 47:26Speaker 6: it was right around Halloween, he came in with.
- 47:32Speaker 7: Like a gladiator's costume.
- 47:34Speaker 6: Yeah. And it was right around the time that that
- 47:36Speaker 6: movie came out. And basically his message was, whatever comes
- 47:40Speaker 6: at us, we're going to be as one and fight.
- 47:42Speaker 6: But when he came through the door in a gladiator costume,
- 47:46Speaker 6: he just did it to make us at ease, right?
- 47:50Speaker 7: And he did the meeting in this costume.
- 47:53Speaker 6: And it was one of my favorite things that Jay
- 47:58Speaker 6: ever did. And I ran into Chris Tamer. and Mike Stapleton,
- 48:03Speaker 6: two great guys that were on that team. And twice
- 48:07Speaker 6: in one week, like, I'm.
- 48:09Speaker 7: Not even kidding.
- 48:10Speaker 6: You know, you were a D you come around the
- 48:12Speaker 6: back of the net and sometimes there's nowhere to go.
- 48:14Speaker 6: You got to get rid of it twice in one week.
- 48:18Speaker 6: Tamer hit Jay Leach on the bench. He fired it
- 48:23Speaker 6: right into our bench. And the second time when Jay
- 48:26Speaker 6: got hit, he was.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Like, oh, and it hurt, right?
- 48:30Speaker 6: Hit him kind of in the ribs. And Tamer couldn't even,
- 48:33Speaker 6: he could barely stand up. It was so funny because
- 48:36Speaker 6: Jay was such a wonderful guy. Like when I saw
- 48:40Speaker 6: the news, I know he'd struggled a bit. And it's
- 48:42Speaker 6: just so sad. I mean, just a tremendous person to
- 48:47Speaker 6: be around.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Ray, you kind of touched on a little bit your
- 48:53Speaker 3: time in Atlanta being with Thrashers and how tough it was,
- 48:56Speaker 3: but you were one of the biggest free agent signings
- 48:59Speaker 3: in Atlanta Thrashers history. Talk about what it was like
- 49:02Speaker 3: going to Atlanta and, I guess, starting off in that organization,
- 49:07Speaker 3: that organization starting in a way.
- 49:09Speaker 6: Well, we had no clue what this was going to
- 49:14Speaker 6: be about, right? Like, we're going to Atlanta. It's completely
- 49:18Speaker 6: a new city. They had a brand new rink. that
- 49:20Speaker 6: was downtown. Most of us had found housing through a
- 49:26Speaker 6: like the team had a realtor and we all kind
- 49:29Speaker 6: of decided taking one look at atlanta traffic that we
- 49:32Speaker 6: were going to live out near the practice rink which
- 49:35Speaker 6: was about 45 minutes away from the game.
- 49:37Speaker 2: The worst traffic ever.
- 49:39Speaker 7: It's unbelievable.
- 49:40Speaker 4: It's the worst ever.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Whatever urban sprawl people think it is, just go there
- 49:47Speaker 6: and drive around for 20 minutes.
- 49:50Speaker 7: It's unbelievable.
- 49:52Speaker 6: The expansion rules were also different. Teams, I think, could
- 49:57Speaker 6: protect at the time 11 skaters. At best, you were
- 50:04Speaker 6: getting the team's 12th best skater, but guys were exempt
- 50:08Speaker 6: from And so we were going to training camp and
- 50:12Speaker 6: Nelson Emerson was on the team as well. And Nellie's
- 50:16Speaker 6: a longtime executive now in Los Angeles. And they had
- 50:21Speaker 6: a blurb in the paper, that's how long ago it was,
- 50:25Speaker 6: in USA Today about each.
- 50:27Speaker 7: Team going into camp.
- 50:28Speaker 6: And it said, the Thrashers expansion team offensively will be
- 50:33Speaker 6: led by me and Nellie. And so he taps me
- 50:38Speaker 6: on the shoulder and he goes, I think we're in trouble.
- 50:41Speaker 6: And because if this is what we had, we were
- 50:44Speaker 6: going to be in trouble. And we got there and
- 50:47Speaker 6: it didn't matter. I don't know if you guys ever
- 50:50Speaker 6: played on teams like this. It didn't matter how well
- 50:53Speaker 6: we played. It was just not going to be good enough.
- 50:58Speaker 6: We'd play a great game and we'd be losing 3-2
- 51:02Speaker 6: and they'd get an empty netter.
- 51:03Speaker 7: We'd lose 4-2.
- 51:04Speaker 6: We'd be on the bus after the game and go, man,
- 51:07Speaker 6: I don't know that we could have played any better
- 51:10Speaker 6: than that. I ran into Marty Brodeur last week at
- 51:13Speaker 6: a game and somebody said, Oh, you know, playing against them.
- 51:17Speaker 7: And I said, yeah. And when Marty was in New Jersey,
- 51:20Speaker 7: we never played against him.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Never.
- 51:23Speaker 6: Like that was, we got, we saw every backup goalie
- 51:26Speaker 6: in the league.
- 51:27Speaker 4: To what I tell people about you, you play on
- 51:29Speaker 4: a bad team. It's like, you get backups. Like you
- 51:31Speaker 4: don't even, you won't even play against some of the greats.
- 51:34Speaker 4: Cause you're getting, you're like, geez, this sucks.
- 51:38Speaker 6: There were some nights like, like, honestly, guys, I think
- 51:41Speaker 6: we went 20 games in a row without a win.
- 51:44Speaker 6: There were a couple of ties in there. And I
- 51:47Speaker 6: know the date that we won because it was, we
- 51:51Speaker 6: were in Colorado. We won five, four in overtime because
- 51:55Speaker 6: it was the 20th anniversary of the miracle on ice.
- 51:59Speaker 6: And so there was a bunch of stuff playing all
- 52:01Speaker 6: day in the, on, you know, on sports center and
- 52:04Speaker 6: all that, you know, a Ruzioni interview and all this stuff. And,
- 52:08Speaker 6: and so, um, I had scored in overtime and I
- 52:11Speaker 6: did an interview after, and I said, you know, they,
- 52:13Speaker 6: they're talking about this 20 year old miracle on ice.
- 52:16Speaker 6: Like that was a miracle on ice. What happened here tonight?
- 52:21Speaker 6: And I, and I got back to LA after the
- 52:23Speaker 6: game and Al Michaels was a season ticket holder and
- 52:26Speaker 6: he left a voice message on, Hey, thanks for, you know,
- 52:30Speaker 6: mentioning the call, you know, the miracle on ice. And,
- 52:33Speaker 6: I kept that voice message forever because I mean, it
- 52:35Speaker 6: was Al Michaels, right? But when we won a game,
- 52:38Speaker 6: it was an event. Like we just, we won 14 games.
- 52:42Speaker 6: It is just, I don't.
- 52:45Speaker 7: Think I did.
- 52:46Speaker 6: You'd go to the rink and you'd be practicing and
- 52:49Speaker 6: you're like, what are we doing?
- 52:51Speaker 7: Like, you know, we got, Oh, here comes New Jersey. Oh, great.
- 52:55Speaker 7: We got a chance to beat New Jersey.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:57Speaker 6: And, and so I'm, I'm doing the Canucks game tonight and,
- 53:01Speaker 6: You know, they're at the very beginning of a rebuild.
- 53:05Speaker 2: It's ugly.
- 53:06Speaker 7: It's ugly.
- 53:07Speaker 6: And for these players, you know, like everybody in the market,
- 53:12Speaker 6: they're talking about, oh, the guys look frustrated. Yeah, of
- 53:15Speaker 6: course they are. And wait until it's 15 games more.
- 53:19Speaker 3: Right?
- 53:19Speaker 7: Like, it's so hard. You've got pride.
- 53:23Speaker 6: You've got a desire to stay in the league.
- 53:27Speaker 7: You love your job. And you just can't do it
- 53:31Speaker 7: well enough.
- 53:32Speaker 3: To win.
- 53:32Speaker 7: It's a, it's a really, it's a tough road in a,
- 53:36Speaker 7: in a great job, I guess.
- 53:38Speaker 4: It's a, it's a tough road and it's probably tougher that,
- 53:42Speaker 4: you know, 14, 19 win season you had when you
- 53:44Speaker 4: got to usher in two young guys in Danny Heatley
- 53:48Speaker 4: and Colville.
- 53:49Speaker 7: Were we happy when they came?
- 53:51Speaker 4: How was that seeing those two guys come in and,
- 53:54Speaker 4: and kind of, you know, a little bit of like
- 53:56Speaker 4: the beginnings of the new era when you, when you
- 53:59Speaker 4: kind of, You shake it out with those two guys,
- 54:01Speaker 4: just a different way of going about things.
- 54:05Speaker 6: Well, when, when Danny came in, it was the end
- 54:07Speaker 6: of his college season and he was on the ice
- 54:11Speaker 6: for like two practices. And we're like, ah, he's our
- 54:13Speaker 6: best player. Like it was, wasn't even close. We're like,
- 54:17Speaker 6: like he could do things that like nobody on the
- 54:20Speaker 6: ice could do. So he'll, he probably tells this story better,
- 54:24Speaker 6: but so they, we go on a road trip.
- 54:26Speaker 7: Danny came with us. We're in Detroit.
- 54:28Speaker 6: And so Danny, him and one of the trainers to
- 54:30Speaker 6: kill time in the afternoon they went to a ball
- 54:32Speaker 6: game and they came back and he's rooming with me
- 54:37Speaker 6: those old oh he's rooming with.
- 54:39Speaker 2: You you taught him 20 beers at lunch oh.
- 54:43Speaker 6: My god heater he just like you know and he's
- 54:46Speaker 6: so casual right and so he comes into the room
- 54:49Speaker 6: and he's like you know i don't really know this
- 54:51Speaker 6: guy and i gotta be quiet and so he had
- 54:53Speaker 6: a he had like a dry throat or something. So
- 54:57Speaker 6: he gets into bed, it's like three o'clock and he's like,
- 55:02Speaker 6: and so this goes on for a bit. And I'm like,
- 55:04Speaker 6: are you done? Like, are you finished? And he said,
- 55:07Speaker 6: he felt like a little kid because I was so
- 55:10Speaker 6: grumpy at him.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 55:12Speaker 7: But I just, I love the guy. He's just got a.
- 55:15Speaker 6: Great way about him. And he was a great player.
- 55:20Speaker 6: Like Danny's career, I think Danny's career should have been better.
- 55:25Speaker 6: Like he, he had, he had a unique ability to score.
- 55:30Speaker 6: And of course there was lots of other things that
- 55:33Speaker 6: changed the trajectory of, of his career, but he's a, he's,
- 55:37Speaker 6: he's a really great, great guy. I'm so glad I
- 55:41Speaker 6: played with him. And then Covey came the next year
- 55:44Speaker 6: and he was this 18 year old kid that, you know,
- 55:47Speaker 6: he'd say to the reporters, no interview, no English, no English. And,
- 55:51Speaker 6: then they'd leave and Covey would go, guys, go sushi.
- 55:55Speaker 6: He loves sushi, right? And so he, but he was
- 55:59Speaker 6: just a dynamic player.
- 56:02Speaker 7: Like what a great player.
- 56:04Speaker 6: And I, I'm often told this story about, I'm playing
- 56:07Speaker 6: on a line with them, me and these two fricking
- 56:11Speaker 6: wonder kids. And we're in Toronto and I never forget this.
- 56:14Speaker 6: The puck went to heater on the right wing. So
- 56:16Speaker 6: I go over to support. He steps behind me and
- 56:19Speaker 6: throws it across the ice to Covey. So I swing back,
- 56:23Speaker 6: you know, to support Covey. And he carries it up
- 56:26Speaker 6: and passes it across to Heater. And so I turn
- 56:30Speaker 6: and go to the net. Heater passes it back. And
- 56:33Speaker 6: Covey one-times it and it goes in the net. I
- 56:35Speaker 6: was like a stunt dummy. Like they had no intention
- 56:38Speaker 6: of passing me the puck. I was just skating around
- 56:41Speaker 6: here with these two kids. And they were the future.
- 56:45Speaker 6: They were the future of the Thrashers. And like Elia was.
- 56:51Speaker 7: an immense talent.
- 56:53Speaker 6: And, and I don't think got the credit for being
- 56:56Speaker 6: as good a player as, as he was until much
- 57:00Speaker 6: later into his career.
- 57:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Dynamic talents. There's no question about Ray for our stories
- 57:05Speaker 1: for days. Always love listening to you with Sean McDonough,
- 57:07Speaker 1: lead analyst in ESPN hockey.
- 57:09Speaker 2: This was great, Ray. Hopefully we'll do it again soon.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And honestly, continued success not only for you, but for
- 57:14Speaker 1: your entire hockey loving family. This was great.
- 57:16Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 57:17Speaker 7: Anytime guys. And next time I'll be on time.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Thanks so much to Ray Ferraro, terrific guest here at
- 57:30Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted. We zoom ahead with a little cinephile in 60.
- 57:33Speaker 1: First off, Primetime, the buzzy new movie starring Robert Pattinson,
- 57:37Speaker 1: who might get his first Best Actor nomination. He was
- 57:39Speaker 1: great in The Odyssey, a film which Jason Demers cared
- 57:42Speaker 1: for so little he's already forgotten about it.
- 57:43Speaker 4: But Pattinson also... I forgot that they... And so is
- 57:47Speaker 4: the rest of the world.
- 57:48Speaker 1: No?
- 57:49Speaker 3: No.
- 57:50Speaker 2: So is the rest of the world. It has come
- 57:51Speaker 2: and gone like the wind. It's done.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Tal would take issue with that.
- 57:56Speaker 2: Well, where is the Odyssey? Tal, where is it?
- 57:58Speaker 1: It's going to get nominated for an Oscar.
- 57:59Speaker 5: Wait until awards season, and you're going to be hearing
- 58:02Speaker 5: about it every minute.
- 58:03Speaker 4: But yeah, usually when Gladiator came out, we were still
- 58:07Speaker 4: water-cool talk.
- 58:08Speaker 2: None. Water-cooler talk.
- 58:10Speaker 3: It's over. We're going to have to fire up the
- 58:11Speaker 3: chat around that time.
- 58:12Speaker 4: But anyway, continue, because I'm excited about this Petal Rast thing.
- 58:17Speaker 1: So Pattinson in this film Primetime, which it's by Lance Oppenheim,
- 58:21Speaker 1: psychological thriller, media satire. And it really is about the
- 58:24Speaker 1: phenomenon back in 06 of the reality television series to
- 58:27Speaker 1: catch a predator. Not sure if J.D.
- 58:29Speaker 2: Or Nate used to watch it. I did not personally.
- 58:31Speaker 3: I did.
- 58:31Speaker 1: But fascinating thought process here. So he wants to he's
- 58:34Speaker 1: a journalist named Chris Hansen. And it's a high-profile primetime
- 58:38Speaker 1: show in which they catch pederasts in the act. So
- 58:41Speaker 1: he follows them all along. They're luring in some kids.
- 58:43Speaker 1: You can see what they're messaging them. And then all
- 58:45Speaker 1: of a sudden, he just strides out. What do you
- 58:47Speaker 1: think you're doing?
- 58:47Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, my God. It's like a Mike Wallace moment.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Like, what are you doing here?
- 58:50Speaker 2: I'm like, you know what you're doing. You're going to prison.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Like, oh, my God.
- 58:53Speaker 2: And I'll tell you this.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Not anybody is going to watch this and go, I
- 58:56Speaker 1: have sympathy for a pederast. But that moment when someone
- 58:59Speaker 1: tells you, like, wait. Like, where's the camera?
- 59:02Speaker 2: Like, oh, my God. I'm Chris Hansen.
- 59:04Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 59:04Speaker 2: I'm Chris Hansen.
- 59:05Speaker 3: You're like.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Holy, my life is shattered by this. Like, I'll give
- 59:08Speaker 1: you anything you want. I'll give you my house. I'll
- 59:10Speaker 1: give you my wife. I'll give you my keys. So
- 59:13Speaker 1: it's interesting how he's exploiting these people. Like he's just,
- 59:15Speaker 1: he's using their.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Fear, but to also call attention to what is obviously
- 59:19Speaker 2: a heinous crime.
- 59:20Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, it's like he, he took, he was,
- 59:23Speaker 4: I want to say he was doing good, but then
- 59:26Speaker 4: the way he wrapped it up is where it was.
- 59:30Speaker 4: It gets a little bit on the line of exploiting
- 59:32Speaker 4: these people, but, Correct. He's catching these people, which is,
- 59:35Speaker 4: you know, but for his own benefit and gain, has
- 59:39Speaker 4: he come out at all?
- 59:40Speaker 2: Chris Hansen. And, and I think he said he's despised
- 59:43Speaker 2: the movie, which is fair enough. I mean, I don't
- 59:45Speaker 2: think he's fair enough. They've painted him in quite a way.
- 59:48Speaker 4: They've almost made him the villain, which is like, is
- 59:51Speaker 4: he the whole goddamn pedophile? Like what's crazy to me
- 59:55Speaker 4: with that was like how long, you know, to catch
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: a predator was around and, And people would still fall
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: for it every time.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: The pederast.
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: Like hook, line, and sinker. Like over and over and over.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: And as we know, crime goes to all... One guy's
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: a rabbi, for God's sakes. He's like, oh my God.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: He's like, don't tell my temple I'm a rabbi. I'm like, oh,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: not good for towels, people. That was a bad one.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: And ultimately, it's just.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: But it's an excellent performance by Patsy.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: He's so committed to it. And I definitely recommend you
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: guys watching it. Also available on Netflix. I want to
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: continue the theme A pederast. We began off the top
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: by Jillian.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: You're dark today.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: No, but Jillian played the role of Jesus.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: This is a weird show today.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: And now one of the funniest lines ever by Norm MacDonald,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: the great late comedian, when he was on Saturday Night Live.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: People often talk about the jokes he did making fun
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: of OJ, which led to the end of his job.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: But I thought his funniest line ever was about Lisa
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Marie Presley and Michael Jackson. He said they split up
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: after years. She's more of a stay-at-home mom. He's more
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: of a homosexual pedophile. The lines by Norm are so funny.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: And they talk about in the documentary why he was
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: so good, J.D. It's because his dad has been on
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: the national for years. He's a CBC icon. So Norm
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: is very good at delivering the news because that's exactly
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: what his brother did.
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: His episode when he's on with Larry King, the joke
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: of I'm a deeply closeted gay man, is the greatest
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: setup of a joke Ever. And just the delivery of it.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: I'm deeply closeted.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: So you're a gay man. No, no, no.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: I'm deeply closeted. So you're gay though.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: No, I'm not.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: No.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Just per, I mean, he was, he told the line
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: so well, and I feel like he's, you know, now that,
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: you know, the more time passes, the more I think
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: his genius is getting respected.
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: It's starting to become more and more appreciated. A little
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: bit like, what's his name?
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Andy Kaufman?
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: No.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: Not Andy Kaufman. His first name, his last name is Carr.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Daniel Carr, Dan Carr, David Carr. I'll come up with
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: it anyway. Continue, sorry.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Sorry to derail the whole show.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: And Tal, it's interesting learning about his personal life. Guy
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: loved Russian literature. All in on Dostoevsky. He liked Chekhov. Like,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Norman's a deep thinker.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: Spirituality.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Talked about faith later.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: On in his life. And also on the times he
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: talked about Norman relationships. I mean, he dated Elle McPherson
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: at one point, but I don't ever remember him talking
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: about girls that much. And he made a lot of
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: gay jokes. Then they had this rip of this fact
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: that he was making fun of his sidekick and saying
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: that he found him giving handjobs to punks under the
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Triborough Bridge. Just a fascinating character. Such a funny guy.
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: Loudest I've ever laughed at a live stand-up show. There
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: have been two moments seeing stand-up where I thought I
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: might hurt myself from laughing. One was John Mulaney and
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: the other was Norm Macdonald.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: John Mulaney? Yeah, John Mulaney.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: I was 14 years old at Just for Laughs in
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: Montreal with my parents busting my gut. And I remember
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: looking over at my parents and they were not amused.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: They did not think he was very funny. And also
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: the greatest late-night talk show appearance of all time on Conan,
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: talking about Carrot Top, the greatest... award show monologue of
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: all time at the ESPYs and the greatest roast appearance
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: of all time at the Bob Saget roast where he
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: basically just read lame dad jokes from like.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: An old book. So prolific.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Incredible. Love Norm Macdonald.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: You're right about the ESPYs. Nate, if you haven't seen
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the clip, the ESPYs was unbelievable when he talked about
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: winning the Heisman Trophy. He's like, this is the kind
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: of award that once you have it, they can never
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: take it away. Unless, of course, you murder your ex-girlfriend
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: in a waiter. Then all bets are off. I'm like, oh,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: my God. He was still making OJ jokes.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: So good.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: The OJ.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: So good.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: And he did small roles. You think about even Billy Madison,
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: how good he was in that. He was hilarious in that, too.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: Did you ever see the show Couch Surfing? It has
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: all the comedians in it. I'm going to derail another
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: one of this.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: God damn it. I got to figure out. He's a
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: clean comic.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: At one point, they have like David Spade, Rob Schneider, Sandler, Letterman.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: They're all talking about it. Maybe that's what you're talking about.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: Couch surfing, no?
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: They're all talking about Norman. Keep going. I'll get it.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Just wait. Keep going. I'm doing my research. The great
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Judd Apatow.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Again, he's a 40-year-old virgin. The best documentary ever is
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Tal Knows. It's about the Zen Diaries of Gary Manley.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Oh, shit. Crashing. Crashing.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Crashing. No, I've never seen it.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Crashing with Pete Holmes. And John Mulaney's in it. And
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: his scene with John Mulaney is incredible. John Mulaney is
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: so funny. He's getting him to open for John Mulaney crashing.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Go watch. It was a limited.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: It's about Pete Holmes trying to make it as a
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: comic in New York city.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: And all the guest stars are people's houses that he
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: stays at and they're all playing themselves. And he's playing
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: his character trying to make it as a clean comic.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: So it's all these like amazing comics in New York.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: And he, He's working on his material, and he's trying
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: to get in, and it's a really good show. I
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: think it was only one season, and it was kind
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: of autobiographical.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: So it's pretty cool.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Well, I definitely want to look up the Norm episode, yeah.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it's all good. The John Mulaney one's good, too.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: It's all incredible. Anyway, continue. I butchered a whole segment.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Well, that's okay. It's the second last episode.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: I butchered two just completely. Everybody's having a good conversation,
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: and I'm just like, how about this?
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Speaking of going down, scary moment for Kindle. Penguins GM
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Kyle Dubas revealing this week that Ben Kindle experienced an
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: episode of the team plan causing him to collapse in
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the flight back from Utah. The plan then turned back
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: to the airport. Kindle was taken on an ambulance to
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a local airport. 19-year-old now on injured reserve after a
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: scary incident. Nate, I mean, this is the life of athletes.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: You guys are constantly on planes. It impacts the body system. Scary,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: scary stuff here for Ben Kindle.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just glad he's okay and that everything's all right.
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: I mean, that is frightening. I mean, we have to
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: remember that things happen. Things happen even in the quote-unquote
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: glitz and glamour of playing in the NHL. You know,
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: there's still normal things that happen, and luckily the kid's okay.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: I mean, that's– I'm trying to think of if there's
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: anything happened when I was playing of guys being on
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: the plane, but I don't think I've ever had any
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: incident like that where someone is– where you had to
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: turn around and go land somewhere else.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: You must have had some nervous flyers, though.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Mark Askin, who is a legendary producer, he told me
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Alexander McGilney was terrified to fly.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: It was just the worst.
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: Dude, in Utah, they had to go around and try
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: to land in Utah on those mountains. That's not an
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: easy airport to land in, Salt Lake. Again, I'm so
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: glad Kendall's all right, and I'm glad they didn't pull
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: a Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts' situation is just awful.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: That situation's crazy, no?
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Just keep him up, go play the game, and then
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: we'll figure out a way to fight him.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: 36 hours he was awake.
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: 36 hours, and then he played a game and then
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: flew cross-country when you're not supposed to and you have
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: blood clots.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: But Kendall, I talked to Josh Getzoff. He said he's okay.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: He seemed good when he got off the plane.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Good. Said it was really scary.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: But, you know, everybody did a great job there, and
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: he's going to be okay, which is a good thing.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Thank God.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Meantime, thoughts and prayers go out to the family of
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: former NHL player Ron Duguay, dying this week at the
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: age of 69 after a bout with cancer. He played
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: for the Rangers, Red Wings, Penguins, Kings, and was an
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: icon at MSG. Morpher's off-ice style as his on-ice exploits.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Carol Ault, of course, Sarah Palin, sending her best to
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: family and friends, but a good player and certainly a
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: guy well-beloved in the hockey community.
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: Yeah, sad to lose him. He was everybody that at
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: the network that's known him, been around him, guys that
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: played with him, just love him, talk so highly about him,
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: about a good person he is. So sad to see that.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: I mean, long fight with cancer too, right? And that's
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: no joke. So, you know, hopefully he's not suffering and
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: it's smooth sailing, you know, it's just into a better place.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: And you know both of them, right, Nate?
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it was... It's it is sad because, you know,
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: you you kind of. You know, you get to know
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: different guys, obviously, when you're post post playing career, obviously
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: retired guys, you know, you become retired and then you
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: meet other retired guys and you hear about him. And,
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: you know, he was one of those guys that, you know,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: you always see pictures of him, you know, skating in
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: the wind with his hair. And like you said. an
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: icon in New York, really, when you think of Ronnie Duque,
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: him playing for the Rangers and being this icon. But yeah,
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: I got to know him a little bit just messaging
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: back and forth a little bit here and there from
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: his time with Sarah Palin, who's obviously from my home
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: state of Alaska and knowing her. So just a really,
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: really nice guy. And like you guys said, you guys
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: said it, my thoughts and prayers go out to his
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: family and friends because obviously he was a big part
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: of the hockey world. No question. I misspoke.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Kim Alexis, not Carol Alt, but was known definitely for
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: that style off the ice. Meantime, more bad trips. The
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Ducks endured a brutal start to their road trip this week.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: They first had to switch airports. John Wayne Airport in
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Santa Ana to LAX. Then after sitting on the tarmac
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: at LAX for five hours, had to switch planes due
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: to mechanical problems. GD, it took them 15 hours to
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: get from Southern California to Newark before getting to the
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: hotel in Manhattan, 2.30 a.m. Then they got shelled by
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: the Rangers 5-3.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: I mean, that's just brutal travel.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: There's nothing worse in the NHL Or in professional sports,
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: when you have a bad travel day. And, you know,
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: it's not always meant to be smooth sailing. Some people
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: forget that, you know, I know you're flying on the
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: best plane, but getting in at 2.30 in the morning
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: is getting in at 2.30 in the morning, whether you're
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: first class or not. And most guys can't sleep on
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: the plane. There's too much going on, and it's just difficult. Yeah,
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: they took a shellacking. They're taking on a little bit
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: of water right now. They are not defending the right way,
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: and Quenville's got his His hands full. Right on pace
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: to what I, Nostradamus, predicted to start the season.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: Everything's kind of coming to fruition. My only surprise has
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: been Minnesota. Everything else is dialed in right now for me. But, yeah, they're,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: I don't know, young decor. Listen, I'm all happy for
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: guys getting their contracts.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: I'm not going to name names.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: There's a couple contracts on that team that's going to
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: look really bad in three, four years.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: But.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: Um, credit to those guys. It's just, they're figuring things out.
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: And I think a lot of guys were playing outside themselves,
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: but I think it's the decor is a little too
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: young for me. They need to get some, some veterans
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: in there because it's tough to ride that young of
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: a decor all season long.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: It really is.
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: And Jackson, the comb is a veteran on that group,
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: but he's still young.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Ducks definitely enduring it right now.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: I also want to give a flowers to JD's former teammate,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Mark Edward Vlasic. This week told reporters his career was
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: essentially over saying, I'm done. The Sharks bought out the
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: veteran defenseman's contract June of 2025. Impressive career in San
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Jose and some collect 379 points, 1,323 games over 19 seasons,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: all time with San Jose. The man known as Pickles,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: second all time in games played for the Sharks behind
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Patrick Marleau and didn't share any details about what he
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: would do next. JD, you're Favorite story about Pickles?
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Pickles, Pickles.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: He kept himself early in his career. I played with
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: him and have some pretty good stats alongside that fucker.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: But one thing, he roomed with Torrey Mitchell, and we
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: used to get out and get after it, me and
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: Torrey and a couple other guys. And we'd always come
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: back into the hotel after dinner, after having a couple
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: bottles of wine. And we'd cause a muck and run
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: a muck and go knock on guys' doors. And we'd
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: try to, you know, how we'd do it is we'd
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: knock on one guy's door. We'd go beat the shit
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: out of him. And then we'd grab him and bring
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: him to the next room. And then by the end,
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: there's like 12 guys that would be getting on one
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: guy on the team. Like, whether it be like Doug Murray,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: the biggest guy. And guys would have towels wrapped on
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: their hands. And we'd just go give the guys the business.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: So we used to try to do it all the
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: time to Vlasic. And he always, he made Torrey have
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: a secret knock. he'd only let him in if he
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: did the secret knock and like would have it like
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: triple lock. Cause he's like, I don't trust you guys
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: to come in here and mess around. So he just
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: kind of dominated Tori. And it was just so funny,
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: just completely opposite guys. Um, but, uh, he was a
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: stoic guy first, uh, last at the rink first to leave.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: But when the lights came on and he was out there,
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: I mean, there wasn't a better guy at, at, uh,
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: defending and shutting down top lines, I think for, for, Five,
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: six years there. He was incredible. And Lin Stremeska on
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: that side of the puck defensively. But, you know, great guy,
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: good teammate. And, you know, good hell of a player
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: for a long stretch there.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: And last thought here, just for, this is mainly for
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Tal and Nick Suzuki. Two to four weeks, upper body injury.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: First time the Habs captain will miss games in his
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: entire career. Second longest active consecutive game streak. At 546 straight,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: the active leader Brent Burns, which is insane, over 1,000 games.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: 1,017 consecutive, 47 behind the all-time leader Joe Kessel. Trouble
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: with Montreal right now, Tal.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Oh, Tal.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Oh, Tal.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: Yeah, timing ain't great on this one. I've mentioned to
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: you guys, they've played nine games and blown a two-goal
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: lead in five of them, and they're losing probably one
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: of their best two-way centers.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Their best player.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, their best player.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: Artie's fucking rolling his eyes every game back, every time
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: they put the camera on him.
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: Yeah, they're going to have to weather the storm for
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: a little while and then get Suzuki and Demidov back.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: But Oliver Kapanen looks like he's skating on the top line.
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: Not great, but hopefully it's two weeks and not four
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: and they can come out the other end and get
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: back to business.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: Nate, how good is Oliver Kapanen have the capabilities to
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: take that next step, do you think?
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: I mean, 20 goals last year.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I just don't know. I mean, is he going
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: to be playing against top lines? Like, is he going
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: to be... You know, how is Marty going to play him?
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: Because that's going to be a question now. Is there
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: center depth? That was already a question. Is there center depth?
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: And now you have Nick Suzuki who plays in literally
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: every single situation, whether it's up a goal, down a goal,
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: top lines, scoring, like literally everything. And he hasn't missed
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: a game until now. So this for me is going
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: to be the huge.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: I guess, turning point in their season if they can
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: tread above water and they're able to just be okay
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: or a little better than okay because of their division.
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: We know how good that division is. And they kind
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: of have a goaltending situation too there too with.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: Having three goalies.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: They have some question marks now. To me, this is
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: a big stretch. If they can withstand this, they'll be okay.
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: They will. But things could go south real quickly too here.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: It's got to sting.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: We didn't talk much about Larkin, and we might have
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: to here because San's guest today.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: No, no, don't say that.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: We had a referral with us earlier. But talking about Larkin,
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: that's got to sting. He didn't add Montreal in the
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: 10-teamer because they could use... I don't... I can't... If I'm...
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: But that's, again, that's another USA thing.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: That's another.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: Look at the teams he put up there. Didn't put
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: up any Canadian teams, right? If I'm mistaken... Yeah.
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: If you're him, look at Cole.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: I'm like, what's wrong with you? Put your shit aside.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: Be such a little B and go to Montreal and
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: give yourself an opportunity. He goes there. They're immediately best
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: team in the East. And Montreal has the pieces. To
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: give up, give them Florian Jacki and give them freaking
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: Reinbecker or something. I still think they need a D-man.
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: And my other point on Montreal is, after seeing what
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: they've done without Demidov, that's the best contract in hockey.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: Wow. No?
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: Tal?
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: Like, how much of an impact he has to you
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: and Nate? Because you guys follow him more than I do, but, like.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Which contract's that? Demidov's.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but the Habs in general made a lot of moves,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: signing those guys long-term.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Hudson, obviously, Demidov. $ 9 million for this guy.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Like he could be a top 10 player.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: Demidov could be a top 10 player in the league
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: in three or four years, making half what other players
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: who are not as good as him are making.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: They can't do anything without him.
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: Like they're getting offense, but like he's just, they can't
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: get any depth scoring without him.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: And it's crazy.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: The difference that Ford group. And I forgot that he,
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: when San Jose played them, that he wasn't in the
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: lineup until later in the game. Cause I was just
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: focusing on San Jose, but I was like, Jesus, without him,
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: it's huge gap.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Marty's going to get creative. He's going to get
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: creative with that forward lineup. He's going to have to be.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: We can hear the sirens, which means we've got to
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: wrap up. Thanks for checking out NHL Unscripted. Final episode.
