- 0:00Speaker 1: A very special guest. He is a two time national champion.
- 0:04Speaker 1: He is a US Olympic swimmer, and he's a University
- 0:07Speaker 1: of Texas at Austin athlete. He's David Johnston, one of
- 0:11Speaker 1: my good friends, and we've been talking about doing this
- 0:13Speaker 1: for a while.
- 0:13Speaker 2: David. So, hey, good to see you and Glad we
- 0:15Speaker 2: can make this work out. How you doing.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm great, good to see you, Cameron, really excited
- 0:19Speaker 3: to speak with you today and Glad we can do.
- 0:22Speaker 4: It on air.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:23Speaker 1: So, first off, congratulations on your national championship. Your second
- 0:27Speaker 1: national championship. He won one as a freshman in twenty
- 0:30Speaker 1: twenty one. You went and won in twenty and twenty five,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and going into the defen it felt like it was
- 0:35Speaker 1: a three horse race between Texas, California, and Indiana. I
- 0:38Speaker 1: think a lot of people had California as the favorite
- 0:41Speaker 1: to win, but it was the Longhorns.
- 0:43Speaker 2: There. There's sixteenth national championship.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What changed and what sparked you guys to go into
- 0:48Speaker 1: that week and have an incredible week and capture the
- 0:51Speaker 1: national championship?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:53Speaker 3: I mean, I think when you win a championship, it
- 0:55Speaker 3: starts at the beginning of the year.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Just building that culture.
- 0:58Speaker 3: We had a team of new guys and when the
- 1:01Speaker 3: year first started, we had a lot of talent, but
- 1:03Speaker 3: we didn't have the cohesion we had at the end
- 1:05Speaker 3: of the year. And you think swimming is like an
- 1:06Speaker 3: individual sport, but we had to really bond as a
- 1:09Speaker 3: team to be able to push each other every day
- 1:11Speaker 3: in practice to be able to get to that point. So,
- 1:13Speaker 3: you know, it started with the belief that we could
- 1:15Speaker 3: win and we had the talent, but we were able
- 1:17Speaker 3: to build that culture over time, and I think just
- 1:20Speaker 3: you know, what helped us win wasn't talking about winning
- 1:22Speaker 3: the championship. It was getting out there on those you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: Tuesday mornings when nobody was watching and we were pushing
- 1:28Speaker 3: each other.
- 1:28Speaker 4: So, you know, it was awesome to be able to win.
- 1:30Speaker 3: You know, four years ago as a freshman winning a
- 1:32Speaker 3: championship and then winning four years later as a senior
- 1:37Speaker 3: is just a dream come true. You know, I really
- 1:39Speaker 3: wanted to win another championship and just really happy that
- 1:42Speaker 3: things turned out that way.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And you know, I would say what made the.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Difference was just everybody pushing each other in practice and
- 1:48Speaker 3: having that great team culture that Bob Bowman was able
- 1:51Speaker 3: to establish and we were able to work together to
- 1:53Speaker 3: get there.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So Texas obviously wins the championship. Ye have floridaan for
- 1:56Speaker 1: Tennessee in fifth, Georgia seven, so forour se team in
- 2:00Speaker 1: the top ten obviously the inaugural season for Texas in
- 2:02Speaker 1: the SEC. Did you feel a difference in events competing
- 2:05Speaker 1: in the SEC versus the Big twelve and do you
- 2:08Speaker 1: think that played a factor and you guys winning the
- 2:10Speaker 1: championship at all?
- 2:12Speaker 3: I think so, you know, I think the SEC meet
- 2:15Speaker 3: was really elade. We never experienced anything like that coming
- 2:17Speaker 3: from the Big twelve, and I think it really tuned
- 2:21Speaker 3: us up to be able to swim at NCAA's because
- 2:23Speaker 3: the SECS was so fast this year. I mean, I
- 2:25Speaker 3: don't know the exact numbers into statistics on it. You
- 2:28Speaker 3: said four of the top ten teams are from the SEC,
- 2:30Speaker 3: but probably fifty percent of the best swimmers in the
- 2:32Speaker 3: NC DOUBLEA we're in the SEC. So that meet was
- 2:36Speaker 3: very fast. It took really quick times to make it
- 2:38Speaker 3: back and that prepared everyone to swim at n C
- 2:40Speaker 3: Double as. I think you know, at SECS we had
- 2:43Speaker 3: a couple of guys that would make it into a
- 2:45Speaker 3: be heat and then swam faster times at night.
- 2:48Speaker 4: But at ncuable as you.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Can't do that because to win the NCAA Swimming Championship,
- 2:52Speaker 3: you got it so well in the morning to seed
- 2:53Speaker 3: the guys into the finals and be in the A
- 2:56Speaker 3: and B finals. So I think we learned from that experience.
- 2:59Speaker 3: We were really sharp for them want to get NC
- 3:00Speaker 3: double a's, and you know we're really sharp at night too.
- 3:03Speaker 3: You know, I think Bob prepared everyone on the team
- 3:06Speaker 3: to swim well in finals and to swim well in
- 3:08Speaker 3: multiple sessions this year because of just the amount of
- 3:11Speaker 3: like you know, lactate practices we did where we worked
- 3:14Speaker 3: on getting our lactate up and then trying to maintain
- 3:17Speaker 3: that keeps swione fast. So just those really tough practices
- 3:20Speaker 3: fueled us to be able to swim multiple sessions because
- 3:22Speaker 3: the n c DOUAA Swimming Championship is a seventh session meet,
- 3:25Speaker 3: so you know, you can't should be good for one session,
- 3:28Speaker 3: you got to be good for all of them.
- 3:29Speaker 4: So and that's what we did.
- 3:32Speaker 1: First year with Bob Bowman as a new head coach.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'd just say, you're you're kind of spelled, Davey. You
- 3:36Speaker 1: go from Eddie Reese, the most legendary swimming coach definitely,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and Longhorn lower you go from him to Bob Bowman,
- 3:42Speaker 1: he's probably one of the best swimming coaches on the
- 3:44Speaker 1: planet currently. What's the difference in their coaching styles? Obviously
- 3:48Speaker 1: it both works. Considering you won a national championship with
- 3:50Speaker 1: Eddie and you won and one with Bob.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I figured you would ask this, and what I
- 3:55Speaker 3: would say is, you know, you can't places Eddie Reese.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I love him, and he's one of the most successful
- 4:01Speaker 3: coaches in US history. But Bob is also in his
- 4:03Speaker 3: own right, So I would say, you know, the biggest
- 4:05Speaker 3: differences both the practices are really hard, there's no doubt
- 4:09Speaker 3: about that. But I would say Bob tends to be
- 4:13Speaker 3: more organized, and that doesn't mean that Eddie's not a
- 4:15Speaker 3: good coach. But Eddie would kind of come in and
- 4:18Speaker 3: watch practice and see how people look and build this
- 4:20Speaker 3: practice from there. But Bob kind of has this master
- 4:22Speaker 3: plan at the beginning of the week, and they both
- 4:25Speaker 3: work really well. I think Eddie was really really good
- 4:27Speaker 3: at communicating with people and knowing how to deal with
- 4:30Speaker 3: the alumni and you know, the parents and Bob's also
- 4:32Speaker 3: good with that, but it's just kind of impossible to
- 4:35Speaker 3: replace the person that Eddie is and that's what makes
- 4:37Speaker 3: him so great. But Bob and his own right is
- 4:39Speaker 3: also tremendous, and I'm just really glad that we got
- 4:41Speaker 3: him to be the head coach because we needed a
- 4:44Speaker 3: big marquee coach to be to be with this program.
- 4:48Speaker 3: And we've won fifteen national championships and this was number sixteen,
- 4:51Speaker 3: So you know, Eddie's legacy of having fifteen national championships
- 4:55Speaker 3: is super tough to replace. But we have the best
- 4:57Speaker 3: coach in the world in Bob Bowman here and it's
- 4:59Speaker 3: been awesome and to see him go to work and
- 5:02Speaker 3: the guys really buy into his system, and I would
- 5:04Speaker 3: say everybody on the team really believed in Bob's coaching
- 5:07Speaker 3: and everyone believed we could go fast because they trusted
- 5:11Speaker 3: Bob's coaching plans. So you know, it was tremendous to
- 5:14Speaker 3: be coached by him this year. And yeah, you're right,
- 5:16Speaker 3: I'm totally spoiled to have both of those coaches.
- 5:18Speaker 4: And it's an honor.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Not many athletes can say they've won two national championships
- 5:22Speaker 1: with two different coaches. How how different was the one
- 5:26Speaker 1: you wanted twenty twenty one as a freshman compared to
- 5:28Speaker 1: the one you just won twenty twenty five.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Obviously, that's a great question.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I mean, I think coming in my freshman year in
- 5:34Speaker 3: twenty twenty, it was it was a different year with
- 5:37Speaker 3: the COVID right, and it felt like the whole year
- 5:39Speaker 3: was leading up to this kind of Texas and Cal
- 5:41Speaker 3: duel that we've seen since probably twenty eleven, it's been
- 5:45Speaker 3: Texas and Cal at the top, and you know maybe
- 5:48Speaker 3: in Arizona State or Michigan mix mixed in there when
- 5:51Speaker 3: they won a championship.
- 5:52Speaker 4: But it was pretty much the whole year getting ready
- 5:54Speaker 4: to race Cal.
- 5:55Speaker 3: But this year it was a three team race and
- 5:57Speaker 3: getting ready to race Indiana. And I think this year
- 6:00Speaker 3: each team picked up new people at a midseason and
- 6:03Speaker 3: that's what made it interesting, was it was I mean,
- 6:06Speaker 3: it's not free agency, but just with nil that my
- 6:08Speaker 3: freshman year was the last year where we didn't have
- 6:10Speaker 3: in IL and having nil in this year's and c
- 6:13Speaker 3: double A has really affected things. I Mean, we went
- 6:16Speaker 3: from finishing seventh last year to winning the title this year.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I mean that's super rare in swimming, I mean, in
- 6:21Speaker 3: other sports you see more turnover, but swimming tends to
- 6:23Speaker 3: be more consistent. But I think what made this year
- 6:26Speaker 3: swimming in Cuba team rates really fun to watch was
- 6:29Speaker 3: that there were three teams with a very legitimate chance
- 6:32Speaker 3: to win, and it was very close. But in previous
- 6:35Speaker 3: years you don't really see that it's just one team
- 6:36Speaker 3: that you probably know is going to win, or it
- 6:39Speaker 3: could be a Texas Cal rivalry, but this year it
- 6:41Speaker 3: was a lot of teams mixed in there. And as
- 6:43Speaker 3: far as just the feeling between the first and the
- 6:45Speaker 3: second one, you know, the first one was a ton
- 6:48Speaker 3: of fun winning. I mean, but I did it with
- 6:50Speaker 3: a completely new group of guys. I mean, Kobe Crows
- 6:53Speaker 3: and I were the only ones to be a part
- 6:54Speaker 3: of both teams. So this is a new time in
- 6:57Speaker 3: Texas swimming. We have a lot of really good younger
- 6:59Speaker 3: swimmer on the team, and my freshman year I was
- 7:02Speaker 3: swinging with a completely different group of older sores. And
- 7:05Speaker 3: so my freshman year I was the real young guy
- 7:07Speaker 3: and this year I was kind of the veteran, so
- 7:10Speaker 3: I was able to experience two different teams. And I mean,
- 7:12Speaker 3: I would say this year is probably sweeter because I
- 7:14Speaker 3: had to wait four more years to get back there
- 7:15Speaker 3: and after everything that our team went through.
- 7:18Speaker 4: But both were special on their own right.
- 7:20Speaker 3: But yeah, this year felt different because it was different
- 7:22Speaker 3: guys and it was a big journey to get to
- 7:24Speaker 3: this point. I mean we finished second in twenty twenty two,
- 7:27Speaker 3: third and twenty twenty three and seventh.
- 7:29Speaker 4: And twenty twenty four, so you know, we were slipping down.
- 7:32Speaker 3: In the rankings, and then after we got Bob and
- 7:34Speaker 3: we're able to find people in the portal, we were
- 7:37Speaker 3: able to win again. And I think it's not only
- 7:40Speaker 3: is this a testament to what Bob has done after
- 7:41Speaker 3: he's got here, but also the work that Eddie had
- 7:44Speaker 3: on a lot of the guys on our team that
- 7:45Speaker 3: were sophomores that he developed last year, because those guys
- 7:49Speaker 3: were really key to helping us win and Eddie.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Was able to develop those guys.
- 7:53Speaker 3: So it was even though this year was big, it
- 7:56Speaker 3: was years of years and years of work to be
- 7:58Speaker 3: able to get back to this point. And you know,
- 8:00Speaker 3: I dreamed of days like this the last four years
- 8:02Speaker 3: and we couldn't win and we finally got there, So
- 8:04Speaker 3: it was awesome.
- 8:05Speaker 1: How do you think twenty twenty five was shape up
- 8:07Speaker 1: protect us because you still have another year left, right.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I do, Yeah, you mean the twenty twenty next season
- 8:13Speaker 3: six yeas, Yeah, I mean right now, I would say
- 8:16Speaker 3: we definitely have the best chance of winning because we're
- 8:18Speaker 3: returning the most points. And I'm super excited for that too,
- 8:21Speaker 3: because we've got a whole new group of swimmers coming in.
- 8:23Speaker 3: We just got two Aggies that are transferring into Texas
- 8:26Speaker 3: that committed a couple of days ago, and they're super
- 8:29Speaker 3: elite swimmers and so we're excited.
- 8:30Speaker 4: To have them.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And we also have some really good high school two
- 8:35Speaker 3: American high school swimmers coming in, and we have three European,
- 8:39Speaker 3: really good European.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Swimmers coming in, So I'm excited to train with them.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And I mean, I think next year we have a
- 8:44Speaker 3: very good chance to win, and it would be awesome
- 8:46Speaker 3: to go back to back and kind of, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 3: rekindle a Texas dynasty.
- 8:50Speaker 4: So I'm really really looking forward to next year.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And I know, just with me personally, I didn't sw
- 8:54Speaker 3: I'm bad at the NC douaa's but didn't have the
- 8:56Speaker 3: individual meat that I hope for. And I figured out
- 8:59Speaker 3: what I personally did wrong, completely separate from the team success,
- 9:02Speaker 3: and I spent the last two weeks already working on that,
- 9:05Speaker 3: already getting back to things, and I'm hoping to make
- 9:08Speaker 3: Worlds this summer and then just swim a lot better
- 9:10Speaker 3: next year and you know, score even more points for
- 9:12Speaker 3: the team. So even though we won last year, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: I took the team's success super happy about that, but
- 9:18Speaker 3: then came back more motivated about myself and working on
- 9:21Speaker 3: a lot of things.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Already that I'm going to be better at next year.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Well, individually, you've had a lot of success as well.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You were twenty twenty four Olympian in the Paris Olympics,
- 9:29Speaker 1: And first off, what was that experience like for yourself
- 9:33Speaker 1: being able to not only qualify for the Olympics but
- 9:36Speaker 1: be able to compete You're in Paris, but also I
- 9:39Speaker 1: know you and a lot of other athletes also were
- 9:40Speaker 1: dealing with a lot of sickness going around. What was
- 9:42Speaker 1: your experience overall like in the Summer Olympics last year.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, despite having COVID, it was an awesome experience.
- 9:49Speaker 4: I mean, I think my favorite part was.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Just being on the on the boat ride with at
- 9:53Speaker 3: the opening ceremony and getting to meet so many of
- 9:56Speaker 3: the NBA players that I grew up watching, and just
- 9:58Speaker 3: other athletes there and being able to respect that.
- 10:01Speaker 4: I mean, you know, swimming in the Olympics.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Having COVID, I didn't do great personally, but I was
- 10:05Speaker 3: super happy to be there and race. I got to
- 10:07Speaker 3: watch a lot of cool swimming, especially once I got
- 10:09Speaker 3: over my illness. And I mean being at training camp
- 10:12Speaker 3: was a lot of fun because we went to Croatia
- 10:13Speaker 3: before we went to Paris for a couple of weeks.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And being in Croatia, you know, out by the water
- 10:19Speaker 3: and Rieka and doing stuff out there and hanging with
- 10:22Speaker 3: the team was a lot of fun. And you know,
- 10:25Speaker 3: making the team itself at trials was awesome because I
- 10:27Speaker 3: barely made the team on the last day, so I
- 10:29Speaker 3: was the very last person to make it, and that
- 10:31Speaker 3: was super exciting because it was up in.
- 10:34Speaker 4: The air whether I was going to make it or not.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And you know, qualifying on that night and getting out
- 10:40Speaker 3: of the pool, being able to sign all those autographs
- 10:42Speaker 3: and take a lot of photos and being lifted up
- 10:44Speaker 3: from under the pool to celebrate making the team was awesome.
- 10:47Speaker 3: That's things I dreamed of as a kid. So I'm
- 10:50Speaker 3: just really happy that I don't have to wait three
- 10:52Speaker 3: more years to be an Olympian. So, you know, it
- 10:54Speaker 3: was an awesome experience and it's given me a lot
- 10:57Speaker 3: of learning experience and motivation to try to come back
- 11:00Speaker 3: in LA and win the gold. But I mean, ultimately,
- 11:02Speaker 3: it was awesome being there. And yeah, I mean it
- 11:05Speaker 3: would be awesome to have the Olympics in LA and
- 11:07Speaker 3: I think just having that in home soil, we can
- 11:10Speaker 3: bring so many people out there to support me and all.
- 11:13Speaker 4: The other athletes. So I just got to do my
- 11:14Speaker 4: work and make it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I think you sent me a video or a photo
- 11:18Speaker 1: from when you're on You're on the boat in France.
- 11:21Speaker 2: What was that river? What's the river called that they had?
- 11:24Speaker 2: Like completely clean?
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't remember, but I think you sent me
- 11:30Speaker 1: my song and you next to Lebron James. I mean,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know there's NBA athletes that we all have watched,
- 11:36Speaker 1: but then there's Lebron James in a different, different tier.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I mean that must have been kind of like what
- 11:41Speaker 1: am I doing here type moment?
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was the Sin River then, Yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 4: it was super cool.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I I got to talk to Steph Curry and Kevin
- 11:50Speaker 3: Durant and kind of show them what it was like
- 11:53Speaker 3: when I was at their games trying to get their
- 11:54Speaker 3: autograph like six years ago.
- 11:56Speaker 4: And I talked to.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Kevin Durant about like what it was like to be
- 11:58Speaker 3: at Texas and next to him on the boat for
- 12:01Speaker 3: a bit, and then got to meet a lot of
- 12:02Speaker 3: other cool athletes, like I met Noah Lyles, and like
- 12:06Speaker 3: Tyres Halbert and Anthony Edwards, and I met like a
- 12:09Speaker 3: lot of really cool volleyball players and rowers and divers
- 12:12Speaker 3: and just those people were super nice. And yeah, I
- 12:14Speaker 3: mean tremendous experience. And you know, just being being up
- 12:18Speaker 3: there with them was definitely an experience to take in
- 12:21Speaker 3: because it's not every day you get to be in
- 12:22Speaker 3: the same you know, vicinity as Lebron James are.
- 12:25Speaker 4: So one of that magnitude. So yeah, it was awesome.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And yeah, it was called the Sin River, and I
- 12:30Speaker 3: was actually supposed I didn't do the ten kilometer race.
- 12:32Speaker 4: I was supposed to do a ten kilometer race in
- 12:34Speaker 4: the Sin.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Which probably wouldn't have been a good idea anyway because
- 12:37Speaker 3: it was so infested with viruses. But I mean, I
- 12:40Speaker 3: couldn't swim for two hours, like I'd never even done
- 12:43Speaker 3: it tim k before, but they told me I could
- 12:44Speaker 3: do it because I qualified in the longest race in the.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Pool and we only had one guy that.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Like actually made the ten kilometer race and so he
- 12:51Speaker 3: actually did it. But you know, I could have done it,
- 12:54Speaker 3: which would have been a fun experience, but I mean,
- 12:56Speaker 3: with with where my health was at that point, I
- 12:58Speaker 3: probably could have come down with worse and maybe it's
- 13:01Speaker 3: for the better.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I didn't do it. I'll try to do it in La.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Did those who compete in the cent River did they
- 13:06Speaker 1: come back sick at all?
- 13:08Speaker 4: I think a few people did.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I don't know if anyone officially got any crazy virus,
- 13:14Speaker 3: but I know there were a lot of people that
- 13:15Speaker 3: were hospitalized after.
- 13:16Speaker 4: So it was just an awful situation.
- 13:18Speaker 3: And it just thinks that the politics from France got
- 13:20Speaker 3: into that. You know, that's not what the Olympics should be.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So you know, I'm sure it'll be better in LA
- 13:26Speaker 3: and everything.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I know you were sick a lot during the Olympics,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and I know you watched some other swimming meets, but
- 13:32Speaker 1: any other sports, any events that you attended while you
- 13:35Speaker 1: were in Paris. That stood out to you to catch
- 13:36Speaker 1: any ping pong, any any basketball.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Well, yeah, you mentioned ping pong.
- 13:40Speaker 3: You know, I didn't get to attend any live events,
- 13:42Speaker 3: which is what I want to do more of in
- 13:44Speaker 3: LA because I had to leave after my race was over,
- 13:47Speaker 3: which was the last day of the swimming meet, which
- 13:50Speaker 3: kind of stinkd But you know, I got to meet
- 13:53Speaker 3: the only table tennis player.
- 13:55Speaker 4: From the US. I met him in the in the
