- 0:04When I was a child, my parents and I used to visit the tianguis
- 0:09and second- hand shops. On the weekends. My mom said it wasn
- 0:12' t worth paying the full price for a lot of things if you could
- 0:17get just as good things for half of their original price. Although we had
- 0:21good economic stability, they simply liked to save and always boasted of having achieved
- 0:29something of excellent quality at a good price. I loved looking for toys among
- 0:34the boxes of stuffed animals and dolls in search of something special that could take
- 0:41me home on a sunny afternoon. As I searched a box for hidden treasures,
- 0:46my eyes lay on it a rag doll dressed as a dancer. Inside
- 0:51it was a music box, which, by pressing a button, played the
- 0:55melody of the Swan Lake, and almost his whole body was made of rag,
- 1:00except for the part of his face, which was of a hard plastic.
- 1:06Her face was something simple, but pretty, with blue eyes painted,
- 1:11a smile just like a curved nose line a little red and some freckles looked
- 1:17like someone talented had restored it. Excited, I took the doll to my
- 1:23parents begging to get it from me. Fortunately, I was in a very
- 1:29good condition and it was quite economical, so, without hesitation, it became
- 1:34my new acquisition. For days, that doll became my favorite toy. I
- 1:41identified very much with her, since at that stage of my life I studied
- 1:46Vallette Honestly, I would not know what made the events that I am about
- 1:51to relate trigger, because for several days everything was absolutely normal. There was
- 1:57absolutely nothing strange about that rag doll. I didn' t see anything unusual
- 2:04in my house either and I didn' t have brothers who could play some
- 2:08paranormal game that would have made the doll be possessed by something and my parents,
- 2:15although we didn' t go to church much, respected God very much,
- 2:19so they would never have done anything to bring evil to our house.
- 2:22One day, however, while playing with the doll, something unexplained and frightening
- 2:27happened. I was holding her with my arms in front of me simulating one
- 2:32of my ballet poses, when I noticed something strange. The blue eyes painted
- 2:38on his plastic face moved. I don' t know what. Another way
- 2:42to put it I made it sound crazy, but if I was looking across
- 2:46the street, I went to look to the left. A chill ran through
- 2:50my back and fear took over me. I threw my wrist across the room
- 2:54and screamed quickly attracting my parents' attention. They both came to my room
- 3:02worried, thinking something serious had happened to me and, after telling them what
- 3:07had happened to me, they examined my wrist for my astonishment and horror assured
- 3:13that I had always had a fixed look to the left. I didn'
- 3:19t understand how that could be possible. I was sure of what I'
- 3:22d seen. I' d been playing with her for days. I obviously
- 3:25knew which way I was looking and I was sure of what I' d
- 3:30seen. They tried to calm me down by saying that my imagination had played
- 3:37a bad game and, as much as I tried to get them to believe
- 3:39me, I couldn' t get them to change their minds. Although I
- 3:43tried to calm down, I couldn' t, so after a while I
- 3:46took the wrist and just threw it in the trash can in the kitchen.
- 3:51However, that was not as easy as I thought it would be, because
- 3:54my mom told me that there was no valid reason to throw it away and
- 3:59that if I threw it away, then they would never buy me toys again,
- 4:04so I had no choice but to take her back to my room,
- 4:09although I was so afraid that I thought to keep the wrist in my closet
- 4:13where at least I would not have to see her constantly. It was a
- 4:17temporary solution, but at least it gave me a false sense of security not
- 4:21to see her anymore. Although that false sense of security that my solution had
- 4:27brought faded in a short time, because after about three days, for almost
- 4:32every night, at about three o' clock in the morning, I heard
- 4:38blows coming from inside my wardrobe as if something wanted to come out the music
- 4:44box that the doll was wearing started to play the melody of the Swan Lake,
- 4:48but the tone was now slower and creepy. Every time this happened I
- 4:55covered myself with blankets waiting for everything to happen. I remember one night I
- 5:00was falling asleep when between dreams I felt that the air was missing me.
- 5:05It seemed like a horrible nightmare that finally, after a few seconds, I
- 5:11could wake up just to realize that the pillow was on my face. That
- 5:15scared me, although there was nothing there my wardrobe was closed, so without
- 5:21any choice, I came to the conclusion that everything must have been a nightmare
- 5:26and even though the pillow had been in my face, I had never really
- 5:30missed the air and I would have loved to keep thinking that. But that
- 5:35didn' t happen. In the morning I woke up to hear again the
- 5:41blows joined with that melody of the Swan Lake, which gives me so far
- 5:45a great discomfort. Every time I heard it, I covered my face and
- 5:49I guess I was so used to it that quickly the dream was invading me
- 5:55again, although this time between dreams. I heard the sliding door of my
- 5:59mistake, but it slipped. I took courage and took off my blankets and
- 6:03looked at the direction of the closet and, to my misfortune, I had
- 6:08not imagined it. The sliding door. It was really sliding slowly And what
- 6:13was even worse, the doll popped her face through the opening with that perpetual
- 6:16smile that in the past I had liked, but that now only scared me
- 6:21a lot. I couldn' t stand it anymore and I started screaming to
- 6:28call my parents the pure idea that that doll would come out of my closet
- 6:31at night and walk all over my room and that I would even have tried
- 6:36to suffocate myself once with the pillow, I would just be terrified. I
- 6:41couldn' t stand the idea that that doll would stay in my room for
- 6:45another minute. I remember well that when I heard my parents' footsteps toward
- 6:49my room, that doll seemed to notice it too and then she ran the
- 6:55closet door herself to close it again, as if nothing had happened. Upon
- 7:00entering they found me visibly frightened, pointing to the closet where I had seen
- 7:06all that had happened and in the midst of sobs and tears, I tried
- 7:11to tell them what had happened to me. My parents exchanged eyes of disbelief
- 7:15and my mom tried to reassure me by saying it should only be my imagination.
- 7:21I was told that I had always been a very brave child and that
- 7:26I should not be afraid of a rag doll. I even remember my dad
- 7:30taking the doll out of the closet and examining it to make fun of those
- 7:34hands and rag feet that didn' t even have any fingers. He told
- 7:38me that even if I was alive, I could hardly do anything with those
- 7:43little arms and then Mom supported that idea. However, despite my parents’
- 7:47attempts to convince me that everything was fine and that there was absolutely nothing to
- 7:51fear, I could not ignore what my eyes had witnessed. That doll had
- 8:00moved and she was convinced that she had also tried to kill me with a
- 8:05pillow, so frustrated and terrified. I insisted that we should get rid of
- 8:09the doll once and for all I told them that it was real and that
- 8:15I no longer wanted it, no matter how much they never bought me any
- 8:18toy again. I just wanted to get her away from me. I guess
- 8:22my dad felt my desperation. I don' t think he believed my story,
- 8:28but at least my crying helped my dad tell me that he was okay,
- 8:33that he would get rid of her and that he would never see her
- 8:35again. And after that he told me to go back to sleep and he
- 8:39took the doll out of my room. I thought that would be the end
- 8:43of everything, that I would finally be free of that disturbing presence. However,
- 8:48it was not so. A week passed without her seeing the doll again
- 8:54and I thought she had finally been released from that scary toy. But on
- 9:00a rainy afternoon, when I returned from my ballet classes, I saw her
- 9:03again in my bed sitting on one of my pillows with her perpetual smile.
- 9:09Terror returned with more force than ever. I was going to tell my mom
- 9:13what I' d seen, so something missed went to see and indeed,
- 9:18there was the doll. But instead of freaking out or taking me seriously this
- 9:22time, she just tried to reassure me by telling me not to worry,
- 9:28because the sure thing was that my dad just wanted to play me a joke
- 9:31and that' s why he should have left her in my bed. But
- 9:35when night came I heard my mom telling my dad not to scare me with
- 9:39the doll, that I didn' t need any excuse to be afraid of
- 9:45him and that he must have seen me when I saw the doll in my
- 9:48bed, to which he replied confused that he had never done that and that
- 9:52he had given the doll to the neighbor next door. Days ago. The
- 9:56neighbor next door was my best friend in the neighborhood and although she was aware
- 10:01of the fear I had, that doll never finished believing me at all,
- 10:07so it made sense for me to believe that I didn' t love her
- 10:11anymore and she didn' t tell me not to make me feel bad either.
- 10:15The next morning, my dad took the doll and returned it to the
- 10:18neighbor, although it took longer to do that than the time he saw the
- 10:22doll lying in the garden the next morning and that did not stop there,
- 10:28but he returned it and out of nowhere appeared somewhere random in the house.
- 10:33I remember that almost always I found her, so I cried and told her
- 10:39to please take her away from me. After my dad tried to return the
- 10:43doll to the neighbor again and again unsuccessfully, my parents began to believe that
- 10:48I was responsible for the toy still appearing in our house. They thought me
- 10:54and the neighboring girl agreed to make a big joke on them. Despite my
- 11:00explanations and those of the neighboring girl, they were skeptical and decided to ignore
- 11:05the matter. It didn' t matter how much we insisted we weren'
- 11:11t guilty. The disturbing presence of the wrist continued, so she and I
- 11:16said we' d get rid of it on our own. I remember well
- 11:20that we buried her, threw her in trash cans from other houses and even
- 11:24once we gave her to a dog to take away. But no matter what
- 11:28we did, he always showed up at my house again. Together we came
- 11:33to the conclusion that we had to get as far away from the wrist as
- 11:39possible so that he couldn' t find us. We had to get rid
- 11:43of her once and for all. After thinking of various options, we decided
- 11:48to take her away from our homes and get rid of her in a remote
- 11:52place. So in one afternoon, while they were all busy, we put
- 11:58our wrists in a bag of ns trash and we went on a bike to
- 12:03some garbage cans that were far away. I remember well that we even threw
- 12:07a lot of stones in the bag so that he couldn' t get out
- 12:11and we both went home. They spent a couple of days without seeing a
- 12:15trace of the wrist and for a moment we thought we had managed to get
- 12:20rid of it. I remember we decided to do a sleepover at the neighboring
- 12:24girl' s house. We spent the afternoon playing in a nearby park and
- 12:28had been a little late, so when we came back it was already starting
- 12:31to get dark. I don' t remember being afraid, though. At
- 12:35that time children used to play in the street late and there was not as
- 12:39much trouble as today. On the way back. As we moved on together,
- 12:46we noticed something strange. In the distance. I was in the middle
- 12:50of the road. At first we had no idea what it was. Even
- 12:54I remember thinking it was a can of soda that for some reason was reeling
- 12:58with the wind. In retrospect, I don' t know why I thought
- 13:05that, because my wind was doing at the time. The closer we got,
- 13:09it looked like a humanoid figure that advanced in a peculiar and rhythmic way.
- 13:13As we got a little closer, we realized it was the rag doll,
- 13:18dressed as a dancer, and the worst thing was that she seemed to
- 13:22be dancing as she approached us. Those images still haunt my nightmares to this
- 13:28day. Our legs were paralyzed with fear and our hands were sweating with anguish.
- 13:35“ This is the doll,” the neighboring girl whispered with a trembling
- 13:39voice. We both looked in panic and didn' t know what to do.
- 13:43The doll stopped about five meters away and her disquieting eyes seemed fixed on
- 13:48us. His gaze had already returned to the front. The heart beat us
- 13:56hard. As we looked at the doll looking for a way to escape that
- 14:01terrifying encounter. The doll began to run in our direction and there was no
- 14:05time to waste. At that moment, my friend grabbed my hand and pulled
- 14:11me to run with her, and that made me react almost immediately if it
- 14:15wasn' t for her who knew it would have happened to me. That
- 14:18night we ran in the opposite direction. Our hearts beat very hard, while
- 14:26our legs carried us as far away from the wrist as possible. We ran
- 14:31at full speed with our gaze fixed on the horizon, trying to leave behind
- 14:35that horrific encounter, but the doll kept chasing us and its disturbing figure seemed
- 14:41to stalk us. In the dark of the night we managed to get home
- 14:46and there we realized that the truth no longer followed us. We weren'
- 14:50t sure at what point he stopped chasing us, but we were relieved.
- 14:54That' s why. She told me that we should tell our parents,
- 14:58but I told her that they wouldn' t believe us and that we'
- 15:03d only get in trouble, so we didn' t say anything that night.
- 15:07The next morning, still affected by the terror of the night before,
- 15:11my friend and I were trying to clear ourselves by playing mud cakes in my
- 15:16garden. The chills swept through my body When I saw with horror as the
- 15:22wrist looked at his face from behind a tree. It reminded me a lot
- 15:26when I had seen her in my closet without being able to contain the fear,
- 15:33I cried out and called my dad hoping that he could understand what was
- 15:37happening. When my father went out into the garden, the doll was no
- 15:41longer there. I tried to explain to him what we had seen, but
- 15:46his expression was skepticism and tiredness. She told me that I had to stop
- 15:52and that I was only making my friend scared and that if I didn'
- 15:56t stop, then I would be punished until further notice and then enter the
- 16:00house again. As soon as Dad left, my friend screamed at the wrist,
- 16:04sitting on the tree branch, swinging her feet as she looked at us,
- 16:10we both screamed again, which made Dad come out again. However,
- 16:15the unexpected happened. The doll seemed inert and dropped to the ground as if
- 16:21it had no life of its own. My friend and I, with tears
- 16:25in our eyes, tried to explain again what had happened, but it seemed
- 16:30that our testimony had no weight at all. My father, already exhausted and
- 16:36desperate by that situation, told me that I was tired of that damn doll
- 16:41and that if I didn' t want it, I was perfect. Right
- 16:44away. He walked angry where the wrist was lying and lifted it from the
- 16:48lawn, holding the wrist with fury. He threw it in the roast where
- 16:53we used to make roast meat. He sprayed the toy with liquid to light
- 16:57the coal and prepared to set fire, but what happened next left us petrified.
- 17:04Just as she lit the match, the doll sat down on its own.
- 17:08I even remember trying to get up and at that moment my dad got
- 17:14so scared that he dropped the match on his wrist, causing it to start
- 17:18burning. My friend and I watched with astonishment as the doll began to burn
- 17:23quickly. But what surprised us most and is something that my dad counts to
- 17:27date, is that, instead of staying on the grill, he went out
- 17:32on his own and fell on the grass. The doll tried to crawl,
- 17:37but her efforts were useless. It was consumed in flames in a matter of
- 17:44minutes until it was finally reduced to ashes. My family and I were amazed
- 17:49to see that damn doll disappear forever. After that, I have a memory
- 17:56that my parents called a church father to bless the house and I could almost
- 18:00swear that the same father was the one who took the ashes and what was
- 18:04left of that doll. I guess I' ll never know at all if
- 18:11that doll already had something wrong since we bought it, or maybe something happened
- 18:17after that. I guess it' s something I' ll never know.
- 18:19Every day, however, I pray to God that I will never encounter anything
- 18:23like this again. Story written and adapted by Lisa Hernández
