- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well he's here. Sean Patrick Means. He is a
- 0:04Speaker 1: writer and editor at The Salt Lake review sltrib dot com.
- 0:09Speaker 1: He's also a movie reviewer. He reviews as many movies
- 0:12Speaker 1: as he possibly can given his busy schedule, and you
- 0:16Speaker 1: can find those reviews posted at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Good morning, mister Means, And now we're gonna talk about
- 0:21Speaker 1: some movies that are just opening here. Not Sundance necessarily.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Maybe a little bit about Sundance, yes, and the Oscars yep.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, there's not a lot in the new releases this week.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Utah critics did not get to see Flight Risk, which
- 0:35Speaker 3: is a thriller on a small plane. You've got a
- 0:37Speaker 3: US Marshall played by Michelle Dockery escorting a high security
- 0:41Speaker 3: prisoner played by Tiford Grace to a trial where he's
- 0:44Speaker 3: supposed to testify. It turns out the pilot on their
- 0:47Speaker 3: single engine plane is actually an assassin played by Mark Wahlberg.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And this is all directed by Mel Gibson.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm out, Yeah, I have.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I have no.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Opinion on the movie, and I will keep I will
- 0:56Speaker 3: keep my opinions on mister Gibson too. Myself all the
- 1:00Speaker 3: one important movie opening this week is all we imagine
- 1:04Speaker 3: as light.
- 1:06Speaker 2: This is a drama from India. Was like a can last.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Year and got big awards about a pair of nurses
- 1:12Speaker 3: who live as roommates and work together at a hospital
- 1:14Speaker 3: in Mumbai. The director Pyle Kipedia starts, she really starts.
- 1:20Speaker 3: It starts so brilliantly because it shows how Mumbai is,
- 1:23Speaker 3: this place where people from all over India have you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: have come to make a living and there's like a
- 1:27Speaker 3: dozen different languages being spoken there and you really get
- 1:30Speaker 3: a sense of that, you know, uh yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Sort of melting pot of Mumbai.
- 1:35Speaker 3: One of the nurses is married, hasn't seen her husband
- 1:38Speaker 3: in years. He lives in Germany. One day, out of
- 1:40Speaker 3: the blue, she gets a rice cooker de delivered to
- 1:42Speaker 3: her apartment, made in Germany, so she's like, well, yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 3: why is he doing this. The other nurse is younger,
- 1:50Speaker 3: more outgoing, and she's got a Muslim boyfriend that she
- 1:53Speaker 3: keeps secret from her roommate and their coworkers. Midway through,
- 1:59Speaker 3: some things happen and the two nurses are helping a
- 2:01Speaker 3: coworker move back to her rural village, and it gives
- 2:05Speaker 3: a chance to look at these nurses and these women.
- 2:07Speaker 2: In a whole new light. Yeah, this really beautiful.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Look at like I said, look at it Mumbai, but
- 2:13Speaker 3: also look at the these women sort of you know,
- 2:17Speaker 3: in their day to day struggles and and and uh
- 2:19Speaker 3: and sort of finding finding joy and comfort in there
- 2:23Speaker 3: in each other. Three and a half stars for all
- 2:26Speaker 3: we imagine as light. It's playing at the Broadway starting tonight.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Enough starts there we go. Now you've seen some sun
- 2:34Speaker 1: Dance movies if you want to talk a little bit
- 2:35Speaker 1: about that.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, so that started yesterday up in Park City and
- 2:38Speaker 3: the Salt Lake City portion starts today at the Broadway
- 2:42Speaker 3: and at the Rose Wagner. I saw three movies yesterday
- 2:46Speaker 3: and I've got I've seen more, but embargos.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And such I can. Yeah, those reviews to be coming
- 2:52Speaker 2: out as we go.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I got.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I saw a documentary yesterday called Marley Mattlin, Not Alone Anymore,
- 2:59Speaker 3: profiles Marley Mantlin, the Oscar winning actress, the first deaf
- 3:03Speaker 3: actor ever to win an oscar back in nineteen eighty seven.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Does she talk about that jerk William Hurt.
- 3:08Speaker 2: We talk about that jerk William Hurt.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yes, And then she was also in the movie that
- 3:13Speaker 3: where the second deaf actor won an oscar thirty five
- 3:17Speaker 3: years later. That young girl from Troy Kotzer, Oh yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 3: who played her husband, who played her husband in Coda
- 3:25Speaker 3: a couple years ago, which she's pretty good. Yeah, And
- 3:28Speaker 3: so what makes this doc interesting is that the director,
- 3:30Speaker 3: Shoshawna Stern, is a lot like Marley Matlin. She's an actress,
- 3:34Speaker 3: she's Jewish, and she's deaf, okay, And because of that,
- 3:37Speaker 3: the movie digs into some issues about Marley's role as
- 3:40Speaker 3: a deaf icon that maybe a different director wouldn't understand
- 3:44Speaker 3: and wouldn't have thought. It's really cool that I got
- 3:46Speaker 3: to meet Marley on the red carpet yesterday.
- 3:49Speaker 2: She's very lovely.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I saw Twinless, which is a dark comedy about two
- 3:55Speaker 3: guys who become friends when they meet in a support
- 3:57Speaker 3: group for the surviving member of.
- 3:58Speaker 2: A pair of twins.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Oh okay, you're in your twin dies and you go
- 4:03Speaker 3: to this aye and so you're.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Twinless because you don't, and yeah, there's that connection. Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 3: They're played by Dylan O'Brien, who you would know from
- 4:12Speaker 3: The Maze Runner and a bunch of other movies. He
- 4:14Speaker 3: was he was dan Akroyd in the Saturday Night movie.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Oh he was very good.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And then the other one was played by James Sweeney,
- 4:20Speaker 3: who also wrote and directed it. And and the vibe
- 4:22Speaker 3: on him is if Napoleon Dynamite were gay and psycho
- 4:26Speaker 3: Guy gay and psychotic, you get this guy. This is
- 4:30Speaker 3: a little out there. May not be for everyone's takes,
- 4:33Speaker 3: but it's pretty cool. And then the best thing I
- 4:35Speaker 3: saw yesterday was called Omaha, which some of your listeners
- 4:39Speaker 3: might have actually worked on because it was mostly filmed
- 4:41Speaker 3: here in Utah by a guy who lives by guy
- 4:44Speaker 3: lives here Cole Webley. Written by Robert Machoyan, who is
- 4:48Speaker 3: a photography professor at b YU and writes some really
- 4:53Speaker 3: dark family material. He had a movie here Sunday's five
- 4:56Speaker 3: years ago called The Killing of Two Lovers. That was
- 4:59Speaker 3: film Kanash, Little Bitty, Little Bitty Kanash.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so this one, Omaha.
- 5:06Speaker 3: It's about a dad who wakes up, It wakes his
- 5:08Speaker 3: kids up, puts him in the car one day for
- 5:10Speaker 3: an impromptu road trip to Nebraska, and the the younger
- 5:14Speaker 3: son thinks, oh, this is just a big adventure, and
- 5:16Speaker 3: the older daughter starts figuring out that something's going on
- 5:19Speaker 3: the older daughters like nine. This is a really strong drama.
- 5:23Speaker 3: John mcgaro, who you would know from Past Lives and
- 5:27Speaker 3: First Cow and when it gets here finally September five,
- 5:31Speaker 3: the movie about the Munich Olympics sports. That's yeah, finally
- 5:39Speaker 3: opening next week. Here he's he's the main guy in
- 5:42Speaker 3: that one, in the brilliant performance. He plays the dad here,
- 5:45Speaker 3: he's really good. And then the two child actors, Wyatt's
- 5:49Speaker 3: Solis and Molly Bell right, Molly, Molly was in best
- 5:54Speaker 3: Christmas Pageant ever and filmed that just after filming this movie.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Here in Utah. Really really strong drama.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, uh and then you said there
- 6:03Speaker 1: was a movie that was screened some that somebody.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Got read about this in Daily Variety this morning, that
- 6:09Speaker 3: there was a there was a movie in the midnight
- 6:12Speaker 3: section called The Ugly Stepsister, sort of a very dark,
- 6:15Speaker 3: yecky Cinderella take, and apparently it's a body horror movie
- 6:20Speaker 3: that that was so disturbing that somebody at the screening
- 6:25Speaker 3: leaned over, leaned over into the aisle and barfed. So
- 6:30Speaker 3: so it works. So yeah, yeah, I don't think he
- 6:34Speaker 3: was a plant.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Anything any what about the Oscars, any any predictions, any
- 6:42Speaker 1: comments about the choices predictions.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Predictions are hard because it is pretty wide open. The
- 6:48Speaker 3: bedding line. I think that I think at the moment
- 6:50Speaker 3: is the Brutalist is leading pretty well in some ways
- 6:55Speaker 3: because it's the most movie in literally and figuratively, because
- 6:59Speaker 3: it's like three and a half hours long, and it's
- 7:01Speaker 3: it's you know this, this this struggle about art and
- 7:06Speaker 3: all this that's a possibility. Amelia Perez got the most nominations,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and there's there's.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It's very divisive, it's very divie.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I did like it, but I but I get the
- 7:16Speaker 3: but I get the I get the the issues about it.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I was happy that Nickel Boys got nominated. I thought
- 7:22Speaker 3: that got under under appreciated. I was really upse I
- 7:26Speaker 3: actually was really surprised that it did not get nominated
- 7:28Speaker 3: for cinematography because that's one of the best things about
- 7:30Speaker 3: the movie.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And then you know the fact that the substance is
- 7:35Speaker 2: in this.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Mix is kind of a body horror movie.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Body horror movie.
- 7:38Speaker 3: To me, Moore, in what some people are calling her
- 7:41Speaker 3: comeback role, I don't like. I don't like word comeback
- 7:43Speaker 3: because it makes it feel like you went somewhere.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You know, you no, she's great in land Man on
- 7:47Speaker 1: TV and then you know.
- 7:51Speaker 3: But there are there are some that are arguing that
- 7:53Speaker 3: they think that that like the the more out there
- 7:55Speaker 3: choices are going to cancel each other out, and that
- 7:57Speaker 3: the Academy will go something a little safer like Conclave.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And almost a very actorally drama, a very act very actory.
- 8:07Speaker 3: We are acting now. We are acting now, and we
- 8:09Speaker 3: are in really nice sets.
- 8:11Speaker 2: That's yes. I read Isabella Rossellini was a little irritated
- 8:16Speaker 2: that she got nominated.
- 8:18Speaker 1: She's like, I'm in it for five minutes.
- 8:20Speaker 2: There are women that were way more deserving than.
- 8:24Speaker 1: She plays a silent nun who gets a speech.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And that's but I thought that was interesting.
- 8:29Speaker 1: She was like, well, she was very good, and she
- 8:34Speaker 1: was nominated for Best I was dominated for Best.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yes, I like. I like that movie quite a lot.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I keep meaning to see it on everything I've read
- 8:41Speaker 1: about it, I just like.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think.
- 8:43Speaker 3: The other big surprise was the fact that The Apprentice
- 8:45Speaker 3: got both Best Actor and Supporting Actor Sebastian stan And
- 8:50Speaker 3: and Jeremy Strong.
- 8:50Speaker 2: That sort of came out of nowhere from in the
- 8:52Speaker 2: in the betting.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Line well, that's the Donald Trump movie.
- 8:55Speaker 2: That's Trump and and Roy Cone.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Sean means thank you very much. Sean
- 9:01Speaker 1: will be back next week, I assume, with more movies
- 9:04Speaker 1: to talk about. Moviecricket dot need is where you'll find
- 9:07Speaker 1: at or sl trip dot com. Thank you, sir,
