Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The AI takeover isn't coming, it's here
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The AI and robot takeover thing isn't coming. It's actually here,
- 0:04Speaker 1: well sort of here. Bunch of stats and data coming
- 0:06Speaker 1: out on this at the moment. So six job ads
- 0:09Speaker 1: mentioning AI doubled in the past year, up four point
- 0:12Speaker 1: one percent month to month. Nikola Willis, you would have
- 0:15Speaker 1: heard this yesterday, reckons that AI is going to help
- 0:18Speaker 1: shave nine thousand jobs off the public service in the
- 0:20Speaker 1: next four years. Meta Facebook, they have this morning started
- 0:24Speaker 1: firing ten percent of their workforce, around eight thousand workers
- 0:27Speaker 1: in the first round, to make way for you guessed it. AI.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The workers are so brassed off about this a bunch
- 0:33Speaker 1: of them are actually signing petitions demanding that Zuckerberg not
- 0:37Speaker 1: collect their computer use data. So anything they're doing on
- 0:41Speaker 1: their laptops, on their work laptops has been collected. That
- 0:44Speaker 1: data is being used to train the AI models that
- 0:47Speaker 1: will replace them. Their work is basically being copy pasted
- 0:51Speaker 1: into a bot that will get rid of them. So
- 0:54Speaker 1: a petition, let's be real, not going to stop this.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Nothing will stop business becoming more efficient. That's what business does.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Resistance is in this case futile. In some cases, the
- 1:04Speaker 1: new technology is being used to plug gaps rather than
- 1:08Speaker 1: create them, which is an interesting irony of all of this.
- 1:10Speaker 1: The new workforce, which is not human but technology. It
- 1:15Speaker 1: works and cuts both ways. Take China for example, their
- 1:19Speaker 1: problem is not a shortage of jobs, but of workers.
- 1:21Speaker 1: The aging population and lack of babies is about to
- 1:24Speaker 1: hurt their factories. They're going to lose thirty seven million
- 1:28Speaker 1: workers in the next ten years. That they need that
- 1:32Speaker 1: is a few holes to fill in some mega factories.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Enter humanoid robots, robots that sort of act like US
- 1:40Speaker 1: Barclays the British Bank reckons sixty percent of those jobs
- 1:44Speaker 1: will be performed by humanoid robots inside the next ten years.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Just imagine that. Basically, there is more chance that your
- 1:53Speaker 1: next new colleague will be a bot or an AI tool,
- 1:57Speaker 1: more chance than ever before. So you either learn to
- 1:59Speaker 1: get along and play nice with them, or they will
- 2:02Speaker 1: replace you. For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge.
