The Seneca Chief, a historic replica sailing the Erie Canal for its 200th anniversary, is making its final leg back to Buffalo — stopping in Syracuse to immerse fourth graders in 1800s canal life, complete with knot-tying and cramped quarters. This year’s voyage continues last year’s celebration, spotlighting how the canal shaped New York’s towns — especially Syracuse — while honoring the Haudenosaunee people through a symbolic white pine tree planted with water from each stop.
