- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, guys, here we are, last break of the day.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's been a fun day. You guys are crazy. Thank
- 0:07Speaker 1: you to our audience. We love you so much. Thank you,
- 0:10Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. If they've been writing with us,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Steve for a long time years, a long time, you know,
- 0:17Speaker 1: kind of leads me to my close remarks too, because
- 0:21Speaker 1: it has been a long time, and anybody who has
- 0:26Speaker 1: been a fan of mine for any length of time,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I appreciate you. But you've seen the change. I can't
- 0:34Speaker 1: tell you how many times people say, Steve, I've seen
- 0:37Speaker 1: the change in you over the years, because it has
- 0:40Speaker 1: been a change, and most of it was intentional. And
- 0:45Speaker 1: one of the things I'm probably most proud of is
- 0:49Speaker 1: that I do not have a fear of reinventing myself.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I'm always looking for a way to do something different.
- 0:59Speaker 1: You know, I'm gonna have to take a little credit
- 1:02Speaker 1: here because when it comes to comedians on radio, I
- 1:09Speaker 1: started that trend back in the nineties on one seven
- 1:14Speaker 1: five WGCI, I was a comedian on the radio. I
- 1:20Speaker 1: remember this guy, David Cantor who ran the Tom Joyner
- 1:26Speaker 1: Morning Show, and I used to sit in for Doug
- 1:31Speaker 1: Banks in the afternoons on radio, just to promote my
- 1:35Speaker 1: comedy shows. Well, I was doing such a good job
- 1:39Speaker 1: they asked me to sit in for Doug Banks often
- 1:42Speaker 1: and I just go up to Chicago. So finally Tom
- 1:48Speaker 1: Joyner left WGC. I had to do something else. Tom
- 1:52Speaker 1: Joyner was considered the fly jock. Tom Joyner was the
- 1:55Speaker 1: greatest DJ on planet Earth. Him and Donnie Simpson one
- 2:00Speaker 1: the two greatest DJs on planet and Fredick Frankie Crockett
- 2:04Speaker 1: up in New York. These dudes was the legends. Uh.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And then there was a boy on V one O
- 2:12Speaker 1: three Ken. Uh what's Ken's name, the old dude with
- 2:17Speaker 1: the dusties. Oh Herb kent Herb kent Herb k Yeah, yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Oh man. Them boys right there schooled me. But anyway, Uh,
- 2:29Speaker 1: they offered me Morning Drive in Chicago, and I went
- 2:36Speaker 1: up there and it went really really well. David Cantors said,
- 2:41Speaker 1: he's just a comedian. We will mop the floor with him. Well,
- 2:48Speaker 1: I created this thing called the Top ten and the
- 2:52Speaker 1: flow mopping began and it wasn't me that was getting mopped.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I had a mop and I was up there doing
- 3:01Speaker 1: some things in Chicago. One thing led to another, something happened.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And then I went to Los Angeles and I got
- 3:11Speaker 1: on radio full time, and that launched comedians on radio.
- 3:17Speaker 1: After me, they went and got Sindbad. They went and
- 3:22Speaker 1: got George Lopez Lopez. They went and got our Tyro Shelton.
- 3:30Speaker 1: They went and't got my boy, George Wilburn out of Chicago.
- 3:35Speaker 1: They went and got George Wallace. They got everybody because
- 3:40Speaker 1: they thought, well, since comedians work on radio, we'd just
- 3:45Speaker 1: plug a comedian in. But they didn't know that I
- 3:47Speaker 1: understood one thing about radio that nobody else understood. That
- 3:51Speaker 1: radio was theater of the mind. And I changed the
- 3:55Speaker 1: way it was done. And I just had to take
- 3:59Speaker 1: a little bit the credit for that. But I thank
- 4:02Speaker 1: God for that, because he gave me the fearlessness to
- 4:06Speaker 1: not be afraid to reinvent yourself. When I did radio
- 4:09Speaker 1: in Los Angeles, my boy Big Boy, who he and
- 4:12Speaker 1: are super cool now. Big Boy stated, there's no way
- 4:17Speaker 1: he'll come to LA and beat me the Steve Harvey
- 4:20Speaker 1: Morning Show on one hundred point three to beat with
- 4:23Speaker 1: Shirley Strawberry became the number one radio show in Los Angeles.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Me and Big Boy became really cool friends after that.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Big boys. One of the great radio giants in the
- 4:36Speaker 1: business today. So when I mentioned radio giants, you gotta
- 4:39Speaker 1: say big Boy, Big Boy out there in La Boy.
- 4:41Speaker 1: He's a monster, still still doing the thing man, one
- 4:46Speaker 1: of the great radio guys. But then in two thousand
- 4:51Speaker 1: and five, somebody told me that they will get rid
- 4:56Speaker 1: of me out of radio and I'll never rise again,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and I will personally see to it. And I know
- 5:03Speaker 1: who it was, but I ain't got to say no names.
- 5:07Speaker 1: But that didn't work either, because you are not the
- 5:10Speaker 1: architect and author of my life. That power I have
- 5:15Speaker 1: only given to God Almighty. And if God say I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: a rise, there's nothing you could do about it. So
- 5:22Speaker 1: now here I am, twenty years later, syndicated the badest
- 5:28Speaker 1: adult contemporary radio show on planet Earth. So much for
- 5:34Speaker 1: you gonna get rid of me, So much for you
- 5:37Speaker 1: ain't gonna rise no more. So much for being the
- 5:40Speaker 1: first black host of Miss Universe. So much for being
- 5:46Speaker 1: one of the top black game show hosts that has
- 5:49Speaker 1: lasted over seventeen years. So much for being the second
- 5:56Speaker 1: black male with a full time talk show. What's the
- 6:00Speaker 1: Dude that was on first Montel Montelli. I came out
- 6:09Speaker 1: the Second Black. It's just been so many things that
- 6:13Speaker 1: I've done, but because it was the lack of fear
- 6:18Speaker 1: of reinventing myself, and I thank God for making me
- 6:23Speaker 1: feel less. I thank God for giving me longevity because
- 6:29Speaker 1: if it wasn't for God's grace and mercy, all this
- 6:33Speaker 1: credit that I'm taking for myself, it wouldn't even exist.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So let me stop give credit where credit is due.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Lord. Hey, y'all talk to God today.
- 6:43Speaker 1: He'd absolutely love to hear from you.
