- 0:50Speaker 1: Player's Second Acts Podcast. Now the super Bowl is done,
- 0:56Speaker 1: wrapped up, the season is over with. What an exciting
- 0:59Speaker 1: time we got to experienced beings your first one, my
- 1:02Speaker 1: first radio row experience. It was awesome. It was just
- 1:05Speaker 1: getting to see everybody looking at all the entourages, who
- 1:08Speaker 1: had the biggest entourage, who didn't have an entourage, looking
- 1:12Speaker 1: at all the crazy and the madness inside that building.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It was fun. It was once in a lifetime experience.
- 1:16Speaker 1: From Joe Montown of definitely Stephen a. Stephen A had
- 1:19Speaker 1: the biggest entourage question people twelfth double figures at least
- 1:24Speaker 1: twelfth deep. I mean he'd probably say he had fifteen,
- 1:27Speaker 1: but overall it is probably to not not necessary. I
- 1:30Speaker 1: think my entourage is like just just me. I came
- 1:33Speaker 1: under a soulo dolo, so it's just it's just me.
- 1:36Speaker 1: What do you too? I'm just using just I mean,
- 1:39Speaker 1: if I'm with the fam, then it's like four. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: other than that, all right, So we got to talk
- 1:44Speaker 1: to and sit down and talk to a lot of
- 1:46Speaker 1: different guests all week long. The experience was awesome, The
- 1:49Speaker 1: conversations were deep. We really got to really have a
- 1:52Speaker 1: really deep dive into um some really different experiences in
- 1:56Speaker 1: everybody's second act. So who we got up first? We
- 1:59Speaker 1: got all favor Brian weapon X Dawkins. We got out
- 2:03Speaker 1: bar and right now we'll kick it off with this
- 2:07Speaker 1: person view with Brian Dawkins. We're joined by NFL Hall
- 2:17Speaker 1: of Famer Man of Faith Brian we X Dawkins. Thank
- 2:23Speaker 1: you greatness. So look, I got my nickname is Peanut.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I think everyone knows how I got my nickname. My
- 2:30Speaker 1: aunt little Baby, I got the nickname big old Head
- 2:34Speaker 1: and everything. Where where did weapon X come from? It's
- 2:37Speaker 1: really my love for Wolverine the comic book character. Yeah, okay, um,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the way that I played the game before that, So
- 2:44Speaker 1: before he became Wolverine weapon X, Yeah I was. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: called myself idiot man, so I turned into a different
- 2:51Speaker 1: cats better But it's just that the way that I
- 2:56Speaker 1: played the game. When I when I touched the dog
- 2:58Speaker 1: on field, I flipped that switch and said, that's a
- 3:00Speaker 1: different person. So that is weapon X. And always tell
- 3:03Speaker 1: people Brian Dawkins has never played it down in the
- 3:05Speaker 1: National Football League. It was always weapon X. So so
- 3:08Speaker 1: is it because Wolverine because I'm a big comic, but guy,
- 3:10Speaker 1: just everybody needs to know this. Wolverine is the man,
- 3:13Speaker 1: one of the baddest X men out there of all time.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Was it the healing factor, was it the adamantium well
- 3:19Speaker 1: clause that that brought it out? Or was it really
- 3:21Speaker 1: just his rage when he lost it? That's so here's
- 3:23Speaker 1: the thing is, if you know his back story, you
- 3:26Speaker 1: know the darkness in his back and you know that
- 3:29Speaker 1: it's hard for him sometimes to control those things. But
- 3:31Speaker 1: when he does, and he uses it for the good,
- 3:33Speaker 1: for the love of his for his fellow X men.
- 3:36Speaker 1: He's unstoppable. So that's all of those things, the complexities
- 3:39Speaker 1: of the character. All of that brought me into that
- 3:41Speaker 1: character because I have some things in my past I'm
- 3:43Speaker 1: not so thrilled about us for as some dark possibility,
- 3:47Speaker 1: but I've I've learned how to funnel and channel those
- 3:49Speaker 1: things into a positive direction. And so that's the main
- 3:53Speaker 1: thing with Wolverine. Yeah, that's the fact that he's a
- 3:56Speaker 1: a manny hum, he's superhaling. But it's the complexity of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the character that really dropped me in. All right, So
- 4:01Speaker 1: I gotta get this out of the way too, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: then we're gonna we get to a real interview. Questions
- 4:05Speaker 1: the arms because like, look, I played safety. I tried
- 4:09Speaker 1: to model my game just like you. Literally, when I
- 4:11Speaker 1: saw the veins popping, he's coming out flexing, I'm like, dude,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I gotta get my arms right. So I literally this
- 4:17Speaker 1: is a true he don't whatever want to do. Rome
- 4:22Speaker 1: is built like a damn chicken. Like he big on top,
- 4:25Speaker 1: he got a little chicken legs. All wrong want to
- 4:27Speaker 1: do is bench arms. All that I'm doing something outside
- 4:31Speaker 1: every day. But look, I mean I can wear long socks,
- 4:33Speaker 1: so you don't see that, but you always see your
- 4:36Speaker 1: arms right. What you just said is eloquently placed and
- 4:42Speaker 1: put right. So I always talk about the back arms right,
- 4:46Speaker 1: So the back look like you get your back arms
- 4:50Speaker 1: right right and then you go out and hand of
- 4:52Speaker 1: your business then. So so for me, it's also an
- 4:55Speaker 1: intimidation thing. So when you were walking the walking on
- 4:58Speaker 1: on the field and you've Alrea, you already saw what
- 5:01Speaker 1: I did on film, and I'm gonna kind of give
- 5:04Speaker 1: you some of my mindset. My mindset was always put
- 5:06Speaker 1: crazy on film. I'm gonna put crazy on film. I'm
- 5:08Speaker 1: gonna do something crazy on film to have the receivers
- 5:11Speaker 1: watching for next week so that they can be thinking
- 5:13Speaker 1: about that thing that I did to that person. And
- 5:15Speaker 1: then you come on game band you see my arms
- 5:17Speaker 1: glistening as well. Oh that's that's just an extra bit
- 5:20Speaker 1: of things that you got to think about. Yeah, make it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It makes you think twice, like do I really want
- 5:27Speaker 1: to go over the little right now? And that's all
- 5:28Speaker 1: I gotta do just to get you. Tell me one
- 5:32Speaker 1: example or a story where you know that they saw
- 5:35Speaker 1: something the week before and we're a little nervous when
- 5:38Speaker 1: they saw you dig routes. Just certain teams that run
- 5:43Speaker 1: dig routes. They didn't run as many dig routes against
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm serious, they didn't run as many dig routes against us.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And sometimes it's not the first quarter that they short
- 5:53Speaker 1: arm stuff. It's in the fourth quarter that they beginning
- 5:56Speaker 1: short arm stuff because after I handled my business ly
- 6:00Speaker 1: in the game of delivering that stink on somebody, right,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden they begin to think
- 6:05Speaker 1: about that thing if they do have to run a
- 6:07Speaker 1: dig route. So you know, trying to give you a
- 6:09Speaker 1: specific it's gonna be hard for me to give you
- 6:11Speaker 1: a specific one, but I just know that in the
- 6:15Speaker 1: fourth quarter again, there's certain routes go to combinations that
- 6:20Speaker 1: certain teams just did not do. Fathers that don't know
- 6:22Speaker 1: when he said put that stink on it, he really
- 6:24Speaker 1: mean put that thing on him and hit him. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:27Speaker 1: all right. Now, tell me how you feeling to see
- 6:31Speaker 1: the Eagles back in the Super Bowl again without you
- 6:34Speaker 1: being president. Of course, I love it. I love it.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And it's if you are a true Eagles fan and
- 6:40Speaker 1: you're honest with yourself, you did not see this coming.
- 6:43Speaker 1: This is a surprise to have this team jailed together,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and you know, playing the game how hard it is
- 6:49Speaker 1: to jail. And this team really literally acts like they've
- 6:53Speaker 1: been together for years and they've only really been together
- 6:55Speaker 1: for the most part for one year. Some of the
- 6:57Speaker 1: new pieces, right, so to be able to jail all
- 6:59Speaker 1: the different personalities together, all that talent, and then for
- 7:02Speaker 1: the coaching staff to have learned from some of the
- 7:05Speaker 1: mistakes that they've had him last year, and now they're
- 7:08Speaker 1: putting these flowers in position to make plays, and then
- 7:11Speaker 1: the players are making plays and again they're having a
- 7:14Speaker 1: great time doing it. So I didn't see that coming
- 7:16Speaker 1: together like that, like like we've seen, and I didn't
- 7:19Speaker 1: see Hurts taking these steps that he's taken as a
- 7:22Speaker 1: prolific passer that he has this year. And the one
- 7:25Speaker 1: thing about Hurts, well, I'm sure it has, but I
- 7:28Speaker 1: always tell everybody the most impressive thing I've seen Jaylor Hurts,
- 7:32Speaker 1: because I've seen him since Alabama, you know, going to
- 7:34Speaker 1: school there, is that he's literally improved every year since
- 7:38Speaker 1: he's gotten out of high school. And it hasn't been dramatic,
- 7:41Speaker 1: hasn't been huge, but every year he's just steadily gotten
- 7:44Speaker 1: better and that's something to be said about. But it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: his mindset though, Like he's a very focused individual. I've
- 7:50Speaker 1: seen interviews with him when he was in high school
- 7:52Speaker 1: and he's just he's poised and he's ready for that moment.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And I think although Kansas City has more experienced because
- 8:01Speaker 1: they've done it numerous times and all the big lights,
- 8:03Speaker 1: they have that experience under Andrew Reid, however, Hurts is
- 8:07Speaker 1: like he is that dude, like he has been time
- 8:11Speaker 1: to time and time again. He has been put in
- 8:14Speaker 1: these situations, in these moments, and he's just ice in
- 8:17Speaker 1: his veins. He's calm. That's that's what I love about.
- 8:20Speaker 1: So that was the thing about what you said. We
- 8:22Speaker 1: both of your saying the exact same thing that I saw.
- 8:24Speaker 1: So when you tell me that he has made progress
- 8:27Speaker 1: every year, so here's the thing. He has been getting
- 8:30Speaker 1: ridiculed every year. So that means that he's more than
- 8:35Speaker 1: likely seeing some of the things, taking some of the
- 8:37Speaker 1: good things that he can glean from some of the UM,
- 8:40Speaker 1: not people that are criticizing him, but some of the
- 8:43Speaker 1: people that are critiquing him in the UM. I remember
- 8:46Speaker 1: reading some things about Nick Saban saying specific things to him,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and he needs to improve on and when he went
- 8:51Speaker 1: to Oklahoma, guess what he did? Improve same thing, the
- 8:54Speaker 1: same thing from last year to this year. Very inconsistent
- 8:58Speaker 1: with the ball down the field he heard. I'm pretty
- 9:00Speaker 1: sure he saw that. And what do he do? He
- 9:02Speaker 1: got it right. So when you have a mentally tough
- 9:05Speaker 1: individual that can take criticism receive it has a high
- 9:10Speaker 1: um i Q when it comes to what do I
- 9:13Speaker 1: need to do to get better? Because I know I'm
- 9:15Speaker 1: not where I want to be or where I need
- 9:16Speaker 1: to be, and then you go work here behind off
- 9:18Speaker 1: to do it. Come on, man, like, that's that's he's
- 9:21Speaker 1: he's fit for Philadelphia. But I'm telling you he's fit
- 9:24Speaker 1: for Philadelphia. Okay, So all right, you've been to a
- 9:28Speaker 1: super Bowl. You unfortunately you didn't win it. And I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: always giving Peanut a little bit of crap about his
- 9:35Speaker 1: experiences always looked. I mean, let's just be honest here.
- 9:39Speaker 1: If we've got three great defensive backs, we got possibly
- 9:42Speaker 1: we got one gold jacket, probably two gold jackets when
- 9:45Speaker 1: it's all said and done, and one super Bowl win?
- 9:48Speaker 1: And uh, how does that make you guys feel? You know?
- 9:52Speaker 1: I know you Jackie is gonna fit great. You know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: I got a lot to see you. That's one. That's
- 9:57Speaker 1: one thing as a player that I would of love
- 10:00Speaker 1: to have my experience, our experience one as an executive
- 10:03Speaker 1: when I was at the Eagle, so I have one
- 10:05Speaker 1: as an executive. But there's nothing that would have been
- 10:08Speaker 1: nothing like me celebrating with Donovan, with you know, with
- 10:10Speaker 1: you and with Trott and with with Troy back in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the day Deuce and those guys back in the day
- 10:14Speaker 1: of winning a Super Bowl. Um, but so you got me, Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: you definitely doesn't make it better though, I'm not gonna
- 10:20Speaker 1: take away I don't think it takes away from your
- 10:22Speaker 1: experiences or your love for your teammates that you don't
- 10:25Speaker 1: win a championship, but it's almost like make it a
- 10:27Speaker 1: little bit sweeter when you do. And I feel like
- 10:30Speaker 1: I can say that, but because I've been on great teams,
- 10:33Speaker 1: but it's like that one team that's probably not even
- 10:36Speaker 1: the best team I've even been on. It's just a
- 10:38Speaker 1: little bit different because you want it all. It is
- 10:41Speaker 1: something to be said about that, and I don't not
- 10:43Speaker 1: because you guys love your teammates, like you tell me
- 10:45Speaker 1: so many great stories. We still Bears, you know, and
- 10:49Speaker 1: you're just going in really detail about Trotter and all
- 10:51Speaker 1: those great guys, all those great players with the Eagles
- 10:54Speaker 1: for all those years. Like it doesn't you don't lose love.
- 10:58Speaker 1: It's just there is no love loss. You just we
- 11:02Speaker 1: just didn't have the culmination of all of the hard
- 11:05Speaker 1: work like you was able to experience of UM before
- 11:09Speaker 1: it was O T A S. You know, we had
- 11:11Speaker 1: real training camp. So going through all of those rigors
- 11:13Speaker 1: and all the pains and all of the setbacks and
- 11:16Speaker 1: all of the injections sometimes and known some areas stup
- 11:19Speaker 1: that we had to numb up because we wanted to
- 11:20Speaker 1: steal play even though we probably should have set out
- 11:22Speaker 1: behind and then the training room, like doing all going
- 11:25Speaker 1: through all of that, we've never experienced the final destination
- 11:28Speaker 1: of standing at the podium, beat up, bruised up, dirty
- 11:33Speaker 1: uniform saying we did it. Like that's just that's just
- 11:36Speaker 1: a different experience. Yeah, So switching switching gears. Now, let's
- 11:40Speaker 1: let's talk about obesity. How did you how did you
- 11:42Speaker 1: get involved in a huddle up? Wow? So I have
- 11:45Speaker 1: been an advocate for UM, learning how to do things
- 11:51Speaker 1: in a specific way of blessing you to live life
- 11:55Speaker 1: in a powerful way. And that's when I think of
- 11:57Speaker 1: the word wellness itself, and that's what this is about.
- 11:59Speaker 1: What wellness. Wellness is the idea and the thought of
- 12:02Speaker 1: doing specific things on a daily basis so that you
- 12:05Speaker 1: can have the event, vitality, the energy, the strength and
- 12:09Speaker 1: to do things powerfully from a physical and mental standpoint. Right.
- 12:13Speaker 1: So that obesity part of it, Um, you know I
- 12:16Speaker 1: have had and um they've given me permission to say
- 12:20Speaker 1: this to big bone individuals in my family. Right My
- 12:23Speaker 1: mom has had diabetes. He no longer has it. So
- 12:26Speaker 1: I saw firsthand the results some of the decisions that
- 12:30Speaker 1: were made in my household and how it affects the
- 12:32Speaker 1: people in my household. So if I can then do
- 12:35Speaker 1: things in my life, which I do, and that's one
- 12:37Speaker 1: of the reasons I do what I do. That's one
- 12:39Speaker 1: of the reasons I lift the way that I live
- 12:40Speaker 1: and still work out the way that I work out
- 12:42Speaker 1: because I want to continue to to bless this body
- 12:44Speaker 1: and in a specific way as to do things to
- 12:47Speaker 1: give me that energy, that vitality to live life on
- 12:50Speaker 1: my terms as much as I can. Right. But on
- 12:53Speaker 1: the other side of that I want to help those
- 12:55Speaker 1: individuals know that just because you have going to a
- 12:59Speaker 1: place that you don't want to be, you don't have
- 13:01Speaker 1: to stay in that spot. Right, all of us have
- 13:04Speaker 1: been on You talked about team, right, So I have
- 13:07Speaker 1: a team of individuals in my life. Right. I have
- 13:11Speaker 1: doctors that I go to. I have a nutritionalist that
- 13:13Speaker 1: I go to. Right uh Um, I have a a
- 13:18Speaker 1: naturalist that I go to. And so these are my
- 13:21Speaker 1: teammates and they helped me to come up with game
- 13:24Speaker 1: plan for me in my life. So my level of
- 13:28Speaker 1: fitness is for me. This is how I live my life.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It may not be for somebody else. I don't under them.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I don't ever tell somebody that exercise the way that
- 13:35Speaker 1: I do. A matter of fact, I very seldom say
- 13:37Speaker 1: the word exercise because say that sometimes set people off.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I say movements, like, what are the movements you like
- 13:42Speaker 1: to do? What are some of the movements you would
- 13:44Speaker 1: love to do in your life. So it's the moving
- 13:47Speaker 1: part of doing things, getting up and not being stagnant
- 13:50Speaker 1: that will help you stay away from some of the
- 13:52Speaker 1: things that could preventually, um, have you going to the
- 13:55Speaker 1: doctor too much? Right. So, also the way that I
- 13:58Speaker 1: talk about, is you want to take care of as
- 14:01Speaker 1: many things while you can before someone takes it out
- 14:04Speaker 1: of your hands and you have to begin to do
- 14:07Speaker 1: stone do things. Excuse me the doctor tells you to
- 14:09Speaker 1: do and that makes sense. Yeah, that's deep, that's deep.
- 14:11Speaker 1: We look, man, we could I know, we could talk
- 14:13Speaker 1: with you all day about this stuff. Thank you for
- 14:16Speaker 1: blessing us with your presence and just got please please
- 14:19Speaker 1: when we're gonna get to work out of my book,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I need it. I'm there. You can be our cheer.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I'm not. I feel like it's gonna be some weights
- 14:30Speaker 1: banging you a pound club. Now. I give you might.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I'm benching on the three might. So if you do it,
- 14:36Speaker 1: we do that now, like seriously, Now you might call Earl. Okay,
- 14:40Speaker 1: do you know what do we know what Earl is
- 14:44Speaker 1: those listening, It's it's vomiting from working out. Really you might.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So let me get this last night. So if you
- 14:51Speaker 1: want to have more information about this, seriously learned about
- 14:53Speaker 1: some of the things you need to do for those
- 14:55Speaker 1: who are listening. Um, it's the truth about weight dot com,
- 14:59Speaker 1: not the truth about weight dot com. So go go
- 15:02Speaker 1: on that website and look at some of the things,
- 15:04Speaker 1: answer some of the questions that are gonna be on
- 15:06Speaker 1: there for you, so that you can begin to understand
- 15:08Speaker 1: if diabetes like runs in your family. So begin to
- 15:11Speaker 1: know those things, the markers and all those things so
- 15:14Speaker 1: that you can again meet with your teammate developer team
- 15:17Speaker 1: and then meet with them to see what you need
- 15:19Speaker 1: to do to be your best self. I'm wanting appreciate
- 15:22Speaker 1: about weight dot com Tooth of wit weight dot com.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Thank you, Thanks, do appreciate. I do have big and
- 15:29Speaker 1: little legs. Joe the Jet Perry first African American NFL MVP.
- 15:40Speaker 1: As we continue to celebrate black history of Moth across
- 15:44Speaker 1: the league, we share the accomplishments of the past and present.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Joe the Jet Perry was a Navy veteran, one of
- 15:53Speaker 1: the first African American players and professional football, and the
- 15:58Speaker 1: NFL's first African amer American MVP. The first black player
- 16:03Speaker 1: in forty Niners team history, Perry earned a Pro Bowl
- 16:06Speaker 1: selection in San Francisco. He would rush for over ninety
- 16:10Speaker 1: seven hundred yards in a sixteen season career and held
- 16:14Speaker 1: the league's career rushing title until nine three. Following his retirement,
- 16:20Speaker 1: Perry remained involved with the forty Niners organization as a
- 16:24Speaker 1: scout and assistant, and in nineteen sixty nine he was
- 16:28Speaker 1: named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All Right,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we're back Radio Road, Radio Road day seven and we are.
- 16:49Speaker 1: You have a great guest here, somebody I look up to.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I see him all the time. O Bar, what's the
- 16:54Speaker 1: last said? Give it? Okay? Look we call him og
- 16:59Speaker 1: bar record. Can you tell us how to pronounce your
- 17:05Speaker 1: full name and what does it mean? And the only
- 17:08Speaker 1: advice he gave me was, dog, don't try and read it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Don't try. It's worse than reading teleprompter. Man. It just
- 17:15Speaker 1: like it's just just too many letters. Man. No, it's
- 17:17Speaker 1: a akbar Ola kemi Wa Balla. My first name. Akbar
- 17:22Speaker 1: means great, Idoo means born after twins. I was born
- 17:25Speaker 1: after my brother Kebir. Of course you played for the
- 17:27Speaker 1: Packers and my sister, who are twins, and so in
- 17:31Speaker 1: the Nigerian culture, in the Yodoba culture, when you're born
- 17:33Speaker 1: after twins, you inherit that name. So I'm ido Wu.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So when they hear my last name, they my middle name,
- 17:39Speaker 1: they go, oh, we know where you fall in the order.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And then balla means big man, come save me. So
- 17:46Speaker 1: my great great grandfather was a mediator in the in
- 17:49Speaker 1: the village. He's like seven ft tall, I mean, so
- 17:51Speaker 1: whenever people would have problems, they would say, meaning big man,
- 17:55Speaker 1: come save me. So that's how the last name so
- 17:59Speaker 1: and it tells the story. It does tell us, like
- 18:03Speaker 1: the names, the Zumas, the my my college roommate, his
- 18:09Speaker 1: name was Charlie Yao peppra Yeah has gotten in. It
- 18:12Speaker 1: means Thursday born. So every all these little telling stories.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It's like very little things that nobody you think. It's
- 18:19Speaker 1: just no purpose. It's completely I'm just Charles Silliman. Sorry, no,
- 18:23Speaker 1: that it works. I'm just I'm just Charles. Something funny,
- 18:29Speaker 1: quick story you you uh, Pisa Tina. We sa we're
- 18:32Speaker 1: talking about names and everything like that. Pizza Tina, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 1: great great linebacker for us to Chicago. I was like, man,
- 18:37Speaker 1: what's your name? All means this means that. And then
- 18:39Speaker 1: he goes, well, what's your middle name? I know, some
- 18:41Speaker 1: dope middle name. He was like, it's just Donald. So
- 18:44Speaker 1: his name is Pizza Donald Tina. We come on, man.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Know a lot of times what happens is they may
- 18:53Speaker 1: they may throw in a common name in order to
- 18:57Speaker 1: like kind of fit in if other people having a
- 18:59Speaker 1: hard time. It's for the Americans, like, hey, just just
- 19:02Speaker 1: call him Donald, Like what's his name? Just call him Donald? Alright, alright,
- 19:07Speaker 1: tell me this. So how do you feel you know
- 19:09Speaker 1: you're a Lakers fan. I'm a Lakers fan. I'm a
- 19:12Speaker 1: die hard. I called myself an originalist. I was. I'm Showtime.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I go back to the Showtime nineteen seventy United In fact,
- 19:19Speaker 1: when I was born. Magic Johnson just won a championship
- 19:21Speaker 1: for us as a Laker fan. So I know this.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I came out of the woom watching the Lakers at
- 19:27Speaker 1: the Great Western for him. So I mean, that's how
- 19:29Speaker 1: far back you're an originalist? Too good. We're on the
- 19:31Speaker 1: second page. How do you feel about Lebron breaking the
- 19:35Speaker 1: all time scoring recker? Because for me, as an originalist
- 19:38Speaker 1: Laker fan, you didn't love Lebron for like most of
- 19:40Speaker 1: his career because he wasn't with the Lakers, and so
- 19:43Speaker 1: now he's with the Lakers in he beats Kareem's Like,
- 19:46Speaker 1: how do you feel it was bitter sweet? For meter sweet?
- 19:49Speaker 1: But I was because it came from a Laker but
- 19:53Speaker 1: it was bitter because I wanted Kareem, that was my
- 19:56Speaker 1: dad's favorite basketball players, my favorite basketball player, to see
- 19:59Speaker 1: the cat didn't at the top. And then to see
- 20:02Speaker 1: that number, which was unachievable for Michael Jordan's, Kobe Bryant
- 20:06Speaker 1: and all the other dope shooters out there, Reggie Miller,
- 20:09Speaker 1: all those people who could shoot, Karl Malone, nobody could
- 20:12Speaker 1: get it. It It was just in a league of its own.
- 20:14Speaker 1: So but then you do have to sit there and recognize,
- 20:17Speaker 1: like that was an impossible record to beat. None of
- 20:20Speaker 1: us will be here, everybody here a radio road. No
- 20:22Speaker 1: one is going to be alive to see that record
- 20:25Speaker 1: being broke because he's still playing at a high level.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I mean, he's jumping around like you know, he's twenty two.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So it was it was better sweet for me, it
- 20:34Speaker 1: really was. But it was so cool to see Kareem
- 20:37Speaker 1: hand over the torch to Lebron Um. It was such
- 20:41Speaker 1: a great moment because people don't know that Kareem and
- 20:44Speaker 1: Lebron haven't had a lot of interaction and so for
- 20:47Speaker 1: two yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it was a little awkward.
- 20:51Speaker 1: But I would love to and I've I've set this
- 20:52Speaker 1: to to to Lebron's team. You know, I would love
- 20:55Speaker 1: for them to have you know, Kareem on the barbershop,
- 20:59Speaker 1: have one on one on with Lebron and Kareem, because
- 21:01Speaker 1: both these guys have not only had a big impact
- 21:04Speaker 1: on the sport, but it's what they do off the court.
- 21:07Speaker 1: You know, Lebron started something and he doesn't get a
- 21:09Speaker 1: lot of creditive, but Lebron has changed the dynamics as
- 21:12Speaker 1: far as people's management. Athletes are now wanting to you know,
- 21:16Speaker 1: like and I'm just calling out keeping it real, Like,
- 21:18Speaker 1: there was a time as a young black athlete, you
- 21:20Speaker 1: came out most of your team were white men, and
- 21:23Speaker 1: you didn't you weren't including that. And you've seen what
- 21:26Speaker 1: Lebron do not only including you know, African Americans, but
- 21:29Speaker 1: women to his team and showing that it didn't have
- 21:31Speaker 1: to be dominated by one. And so he's representation is
- 21:35Speaker 1: so powerful. I'll never forget the moment I had with Lebron.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I went to his to the school that he had
- 21:40Speaker 1: that he has in Ohio, UM and I set up
- 21:42Speaker 1: a Ninja Warrior program for these kids. And um, I
- 21:46Speaker 1: never asked him to do anything. You know, at the time,
- 21:48Speaker 1: I came out with my book Everyone Could Be a Ninja,
- 21:50Speaker 1: And I get a phone call from my manager and
- 21:52Speaker 1: she says, hey, Lebron's team wants to use your book
- 21:57Speaker 1: in his commercial and his next commercial. I'm going what
- 21:59Speaker 1: I'm like, yes' side away, but I almost like, but
- 22:03Speaker 1: he was helping me promote my book in a time
- 22:05Speaker 1: like if you've ever you know, it's hard to promote
- 22:08Speaker 1: a book, and so to get somebody like Lebron James
- 22:11Speaker 1: who's willingly wanting to put and promote an African American,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know, author, it was to me, it was like anyways,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Lebron James and me is I mean, you know, he
- 22:20Speaker 1: always have a place in my heart, but I'm so
- 22:22Speaker 1: happy for all the success that he has on and
- 22:24Speaker 1: off the court. So does he get a statue? Oh
- 22:27Speaker 1: of course of course he gets Is it with the
- 22:31Speaker 1: Lakers or is it with Cleveland? Is it Miami? He
- 22:33Speaker 1: will be the first to get a statue everywhere they
- 22:35Speaker 1: might end up that he might be the first way.
- 22:38Speaker 1: He'll get one in Miami. He'll get one in in
- 22:40Speaker 1: Cleveland for sure. I mean he is the son you know, Yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 1: but I mean Lebron we inherit everybody. I mean, Los Angeles,
- 22:48Speaker 1: the city of stars and cars, and you can't take
- 22:51Speaker 1: the best star away from us. So he's he's definitely
- 22:54Speaker 1: gonna have to do. You think we're gonna at Staples
- 22:57Speaker 1: or Crypto or I agree. I'm sorry, I can't. I can't.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I can't even start to call the crypt the originalist
- 23:05Speaker 1: like me? All right, So what else is next for you?
- 23:09Speaker 1: We've seen you as a TV host, You've seen you
- 23:12Speaker 1: write books, You've done all these other things in this world.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Somebody like me, all right, I'm trying to I'm just
- 23:17Speaker 1: in your footsteps over here. Number one, how do you
- 23:19Speaker 1: get into doing the TV part of it? The personality
- 23:23Speaker 1: TV aspect of it? And what's gonna be your next
- 23:26Speaker 1: steps for you? Like, is there anything else you want
- 23:28Speaker 1: to accomplish? Yeah? I think for me the next thing
- 23:30Speaker 1: was probably going behind the camera. Um, there are a
- 23:33Speaker 1: lot of documentary pieces. I love documentaries and there's so
- 23:36Speaker 1: a lot of things that I would love to do
- 23:38Speaker 1: from the documentary standpoint, um to to showcase that and
- 23:42Speaker 1: being off camera but behind the camera. But you know,
- 23:45Speaker 1: the journey from transitioning into media wasn't you know an
- 23:50Speaker 1: easy path for me? And That's kind of what my
- 23:51Speaker 1: book was about, like the you know, the the underground
- 23:54Speaker 1: path to success. Whereas I didn't have a big name.
- 23:57Speaker 1: My brother was the you know, all time sack leader
- 23:59Speaker 1: for the Packer. I didn't have that same type of success,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and there's no shame. I made it to the league,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but it just didn't work out the same way. And
- 24:05Speaker 1: but oftentimes, you know, like place in the media is
- 24:09Speaker 1: usually served for guys who had prominent careers, big names,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and so I had to take what I called the
- 24:14Speaker 1: backdoor approach, which was I went to an area where
- 24:16Speaker 1: they knew me the most, which was San Diego. I
- 24:19Speaker 1: went to the local station at NBC in San Diego
- 24:21Speaker 1: and I said to them, I said, hey, guys, UM,
- 24:24Speaker 1: my name is Akbar. I'd love to uh host a
- 24:27Speaker 1: show or do the after postgame show for free. They
- 24:30Speaker 1: said for free. I was like, yeah, for free. And
- 24:33Speaker 1: I did it for two years for free. Um, because
- 24:36Speaker 1: I played for the charges of the time, played for
- 24:38Speaker 1: San Diego State, and then from there I was able
- 24:40Speaker 1: to do CBS College sports. From there, I got my
- 24:43Speaker 1: opportunity at the NFL Network. And I mean it just
- 24:46Speaker 1: it took a couple of people to believe and go
- 24:48Speaker 1: away at a second. This guy's he's talking this fantasy
- 24:51Speaker 1: football stuff a little a little different, and they gave
- 24:54Speaker 1: me that opportunity and from that that jumped off my
- 24:56Speaker 1: career because uh an executive producer saw me on the
- 25:00Speaker 1: NFL Network and for American Ninja Warriors, like, hey, we
- 25:03Speaker 1: want to bring this guy in the rest of history.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yeah so now soh my credit is I think it's decent.
- 25:09Speaker 1: You got you got good credit credit. Oh no, well
- 25:12Speaker 1: it was messed up from other people. But now I'm good.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I get my story. They hit me up. I get
- 25:17Speaker 1: emailed every night every week a couple of weeks. So
- 25:19Speaker 1: he was a co signer two or something. Yes, yeah,
- 25:23Speaker 1: don't know. I've done it. I've learned. I'm I'm doing
- 25:30Speaker 1: every time I do open up something, I do buy something.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I recently just purchased a car, so they run my credit.
- 25:35Speaker 1: You know, experience. Tell me how you got involved, you know,
- 25:38Speaker 1: with with Experience. Yeah, you know, there's a long way
- 25:40Speaker 1: to get to my back my credit a little bit,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but I will I will tell you though. But this
- 25:47Speaker 1: partnership with Experience has been a long relationship. But I'm
- 25:51Speaker 1: super excited about it. Because it really is a partnership
- 25:54Speaker 1: about helping people change a the way they think about
- 25:57Speaker 1: just experience, and that experience not just a at it bureau.
- 26:00Speaker 1: It is really trying to help people get financially fit.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And the way they're doing that is by helping people
- 26:06Speaker 1: save money, save money, not just stuff in money underneath
- 26:08Speaker 1: the pillowcase of the mattress, but by being able to
- 26:11Speaker 1: take a look at your your spending habits. So for example,
- 26:14Speaker 1: we all have streaming stuff that we're streaming right Netflix, Hulu, um,
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know, Disney Plus. Well, now you can boost your
- 26:23Speaker 1: credit score with Experience boost by taking those and then
- 26:26Speaker 1: adding it and self submitting it into experience and that
- 26:30Speaker 1: helps to boost your credit score because if you boost
- 26:32Speaker 1: your credit score, that means you're getting a lower interest rate.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Right and everyone can save some money right now. And
- 26:37Speaker 1: when we talk about inflation, inflation is at all time
- 26:40Speaker 1: high right now for a year high right now for inflation,
- 26:43Speaker 1: And so people are hurt right now because I'm telling
- 26:44Speaker 1: you it is trying to go buy Burger, go out
- 26:47Speaker 1: and try to eat out and see how much that
- 26:49Speaker 1: bill come out to. Right, So we're trying to figure
- 26:51Speaker 1: out how to do that and so with Experience Boost,
- 26:54Speaker 1: it allows you, it gives you that opportunity. And then
- 26:56Speaker 1: the last thing is on the Experience app is they
- 26:59Speaker 1: have the the tool that allows you to and and
- 27:02Speaker 1: be honest. Now, when's the last time you checked to
- 27:05Speaker 1: see how much you're paying on your car insurance? Uh?
- 27:09Speaker 1: Like nobody right, nobody checks to see how much you're
- 27:12Speaker 1: paying on there. You just put it on automatic pay. Well, now,
- 27:15Speaker 1: Experience has this feature to where this tool that allows
- 27:17Speaker 1: you to compare your insurance with other insurance and you
- 27:21Speaker 1: can see, hey, look at my profile with this, and man,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I can I'm paying seventy two hundred dollars more than
- 27:28Speaker 1: I should be, right, I'm so this allows you to
- 27:31Speaker 1: save money in creative ways. Oh well, it's always good
- 27:35Speaker 1: to be able to compare and contrast, you know. And
- 27:38Speaker 1: I actually do check how much I pay my insurance. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 1: it's only because I don't want to lie. It's it's
- 27:44Speaker 1: still under my mom. I'm hey, man, we appreciate you
- 27:52Speaker 1: coming out. Thank you for finally correcting how to pronounce
- 27:55Speaker 1: your name the right way. We're gonna get you guys
- 27:59Speaker 1: got football, so I mean you guys, you guys good
- 28:01Speaker 1: on that one too, experience can help you with your
- 28:03Speaker 1: football cred too. Now I'm just head. Can I say
- 28:05Speaker 1: that now? I don't think I don't think football. I
- 28:07Speaker 1: don't think they help you with your football credit. You
- 28:08Speaker 1: guys already did that too late. He said it. That's it.
- 28:21Speaker 1: That's a wrap on that episode. I really want to
- 28:24Speaker 1: thank Brian Dawkins and also our b Miller really tell
- 28:29Speaker 1: us all into their life why Brian Dawkins became Weapon
- 28:32Speaker 1: X story, why our bar started doing what he was doing,
- 28:35Speaker 1: his experience of Hey, I gotta go where they know
- 28:38Speaker 1: me first. So I'm starting in San Diego and building
- 28:40Speaker 1: out my brand and who I am from there. And uh,
- 28:43Speaker 1: that's what we're trying to do, trying to build our brand.
