Murder In Moscow: Bryan Kohberger And The Essay (8/2/26) · The Vault: The Epstein Files

• 0:00
Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome back to the program. The
• 0:03
Speaker 1: hits against Brian Colberger just keep on coming, and this
• 0:06
Speaker 1: time it comes in the form of an essay that
• 0:09
Speaker 1: he wrote while he was at Dsallas University about handling
• 0:13
Speaker 1: a crime scene as an investigator and if you reverse
• 0:16
Speaker 1: engineer all of that, it sure would help you out
• 0:19
Speaker 1: being a criminal too, wouldn't it. Now, Look, this isn't
• 0:22
Speaker 1: the kind of evidence that's a gotcha moment, and frankly,
• 0:25
Speaker 1: the only gotcha moment so far that we've seen is
• 0:28
Speaker 1: the DNA. But it's the totality of this evidence altogether
• 0:32
Speaker 1: that is damning for Brian Coolberger. So in this episode,
• 0:37
Speaker 1: we're going to dive into that essay and see what
• 0:39
Speaker 1: Brian Colberger had to say.
• 0:43
  Speaker 2: Brian C.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: Colberger Professor Dave Seep five five twenty crime scene scenario
• 0:52
Speaker 1: final arriving at the crime scene, and remember this is
• 0:56
Speaker 1: all in Brian Colberger's own words. The first thing to
• 0:59
Speaker 1: be done is block off the crime scene in order
• 1:01
Speaker 1: to avoid crime scene contamination. Keeping people out of the
• 1:05
Speaker 1: scene minimizes evidence contamination. Though many may.
• 1:08
Speaker 2: Be curious to see what occurred, the theory.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Of transfer states that we bring something with us to
• 1:14
Speaker 1: the crime scene and take something away, thus skewing the
• 1:17
Speaker 1: crime scene from the original state by contamination. This is
• 1:21
Speaker 1: because the original state of the crime scene was left
• 1:24
Speaker 1: by the criminal suspect. A lack of contamination allows the
• 1:27
Speaker 1: scene to be snapshot in time. The curious must be
• 1:30
Speaker 1: noted and immediately evicted from the scene. People to be
• 1:34
Speaker 1: kept out of the scene include unauthorized civilians and any
• 1:37
Speaker 1: more than the absolute minimum number of law enforcement agents
• 1:41
Speaker 1: and forensic crime processors waiting for backup to arrive. I
• 1:45
Speaker 1: should stand guard at the scene, preventing these unauthorized people
• 1:49
Speaker 1: and even holding back eger officers from entering the scene.
• 1:52
Speaker 1: I must call my immediate supervisor and inform them of
• 1:55
Speaker 1: the deceased white female who was approximately thirty five years
• 1:58
Speaker 1: of age. I must obtain an initial search warrant to
• 2:01
Speaker 1: search the scene. Failing to do so will mean the
• 2:04
Speaker 1: evidence is inadmissible. This is another reason why holding personnel
• 2:09
Speaker 1: from entering his key. The coroner must be called in
• 2:12
Speaker 1: order to pronounce the woman dead. An EMS should be
• 2:15
Speaker 1: called if they were not already called by the patrol
• 2:17
Speaker 1: officer fifteen minutes earlier, as they would have provided emergency care.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: If the woman showed signs of life. This would have
• 2:24
Speaker 1: been important for many reasons. Her livelihood is one reason,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: but from the stance of a patrol officer or criminal investigator,
• 2:32
Speaker 1: she may have given a dying declaration of her attacker
• 2:34
Speaker 1: when informed of her impending death. Forensic services are next
• 2:39
Speaker 1: on the list to call, as they are best equipped
• 2:41
Speaker 1: to handle the evidence, process it and ensure that there
• 2:44
Speaker 1: isn't any contamination. Their van also contains the best equipment
• 2:48
Speaker 1: for forensic investigation. A curse research of immediate area should
• 2:53
Speaker 1: be done and any observation should be recorded in my
• 2:56
Speaker 1: field notes to ensure the integrity of the preliminary case report.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Officers who are not needed at the residence should ensure
• 3:03
Speaker 1: that the general area is search for anything that stands
• 3:05
Speaker 1: out as well. This includes the area of the trailer
• 3:08
Speaker 1: park which contains sixty two trailers. Is there anyone in
• 3:12
Speaker 1: the trailer? They should be moved out? In question, does
• 3:15
Speaker 1: she have kids? I should gather the following information in
• 3:18
Speaker 1: my notes as the investigation commences, which will later be
• 3:22
Speaker 1: included in my preliminary case report. When the details of
• 3:25
Speaker 1: the case culminate, the offense, the time of day, date,
• 3:30
Speaker 1: an approximate time of offenses if known, identification of the victim,
• 3:34
Speaker 1: location of the offense, the method of operation if known,
• 3:37
Speaker 1: and the identification of the officer. Since the offender was
• 3:41
Speaker 1: not there, I would be unable to record this information initially,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: and the specifics of the crime won't be known or
• 3:47
Speaker 1: confirmed by the crime lab. Getting the approximate time is
• 3:51
Speaker 1: important and can be indicated by a rigor mortis which
• 3:55
Speaker 1: sets in at about twelve hours or a putrefication about
• 3:58
Speaker 1: ten to twenty days. All this information will aid me
• 4:02
Speaker 1: as I attempt to reconstruct the scene of the crime
• 4:04
Speaker 1: based on the evidence location in relation to its former
• 4:07
Speaker 1: known position. Tell me this shit isn't chilling. This is
• 4:11
Speaker 1: pretty much a roadmap for doing what he is alleged
• 4:13
Speaker 1: to have done. Equipment I will have on hand for
• 4:18
Speaker 1: the investigation. To be prepared for the crime scene investigation,
• 4:22
Speaker 1: I must ensure that I have a crime toolkit containing
• 4:24
Speaker 1: the following, a thirty five millimeter camera or a digital
• 4:28
Speaker 1: camera capable of videotaping with an adequate supply of film
• 4:32
Speaker 1: and power, a portable lighting system to ensure quality photographs,
• 4:36
Speaker 1: and that I don't miss or step over any evidence.
• 4:40
Speaker 1: Assorted steel tape, measures that can reach at least twenty
• 4:42
Speaker 1: five feet, a ruler or other measurement marking devices, latent
• 4:46
Speaker 1: finger printing equipment, gloves to protect the scene from contamination.
• 4:51
Speaker 1: This will enable that I avoid leaving my latent fingerprints.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: Four steps in, small tweezers and a pair of scissors,
• 4:58
Speaker 1: a small saw to take evidence for example drywall, filter
• 5:02
Speaker 1: paper or small swabs for liquid evidence or trace evidence.
• 5:06
Speaker 1: Various evidence containers for liquid and solid evidence, paper envelopes
• 5:11
Speaker 1: for physical evidence, evidence tape to seal off the evidence, containers,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: casting material to take molds of possible footprints around the perimeter,
• 5:19
Speaker 1: with a rubber container for the mixture. A magnifying device
• 5:23
Speaker 1: should be kept crime scene tape for the scene. Protective clothing,
• 5:27
Speaker 1: boot covers, eyewear, fiber free overalls, face masks, hairnets, gowns,
• 5:33
Speaker 1: and anything that will prevent me from contaminating the scene
• 5:36
Speaker 1: with things I bring with me. A blue light with
• 5:39
Speaker 1: yellow glasses, which makes small trace evidence more visible, can
• 5:42
Speaker 1: be used to ensure that a photo is taken of
• 5:45
Speaker 1: all evidence. There could be a very small amount of
• 5:47
Speaker 1: blood somewhere which wouldn't have been sampled, documented, or photographed otherwise.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: Entering the home for crime scene documentation and initial photography videography.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: I may enter upon judicial of approval of the search warrant,
• 6:01
Speaker 1: and should do so with the minimum number of personnel.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: Having too many personnel evident in the photography may put
• 6:07
Speaker 1: the integrity of the evidence into question and tank the scene.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: A contamination list should be made documenting every person who
• 6:15
Speaker 1: enters and exits the crime scene and why. This includes
• 6:18
Speaker 1: first responding officers, firefighters, the MTS, family members, criminal investigators,
• 6:24
Speaker 1: and all crime scene personnel. Still, there should not be
• 6:27
Speaker 1: that many people in the crime scene, otherwise contamination will
• 6:31
Speaker 1: be increased as the theory of exchange inevitably manifests. I
• 6:36
Speaker 1: must ensure that myself and my fellow crime scene personnel
• 6:39
Speaker 1: or wearing gloves and other protective equipment as to avoid
• 6:42
Speaker 1: contaminating the scene with latent fingerprints. A fiber free boot
• 6:46
Speaker 1: cover would also be ideal to avoid leaving physical footprints
• 6:51
Speaker 1: or residue from the boot. Anything that is fiber free
• 6:54
Speaker 1: and covers the mouth, hair, and overall body would be
• 6:57
Speaker 1: helpful in avoiding crime scene contamination since hair, saliva, skin cells,
• 7:02
Speaker 1: and other bodily fluid or cells may be added to
• 7:05
Speaker 1: the scene, thus contaminating it. Fibers can be left via
• 7:09
Speaker 1: the theory of exchange and will contaminate the crime scene
• 7:12
Speaker 1: from its initial state as the offender left it, even
• 7:17
Speaker 1: if we can assume that there was an offender despite
• 7:19
Speaker 1: seeming obvious. Preventing contamination is an important way to ensure
• 7:23
Speaker 1: the integrity of the investigation and the evidence. We should
• 7:27
Speaker 1: always treat the crime scene as if there is indeed
• 7:30
Speaker 1: a criminal homicide as to not miss out on important
• 7:33
Speaker 1: details that is how this crime scene is being handled.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: The first thing for me to do is to take
• 7:39
Speaker 1: a coordinated series of crime scene photographs with a digital
• 7:42
Speaker 1: photography device or a thirty five millimeter camera from a
• 7:46
Speaker 1: natural point of view. These photos must be taken prior
• 7:49
Speaker 1: to the movement of any object in the crime scene
• 7:52
Speaker 1: to ensure that the photo captures the scene as the
• 7:55
Speaker 1: offender left it. The photograph should be taken from a
• 7:59
Speaker 1: general view of the exterior of the home as well
• 8:01
Speaker 1: as general views of the interior, recording the time and
• 8:04
Speaker 1: details of the photograph in my notes. Setting up portable
• 8:08
Speaker 1: lighting ensures that the elements of the crime are adequately
• 8:12
Speaker 1: illuminated for photographic documentation. The photos should be in color
• 8:16
Speaker 1: as to provide the best, most accurate image, thus avoiding
• 8:20
Speaker 1: photographic distortion. The following details regarding photography should be recorded
• 8:26
Speaker 1: in the field notes and on the back of the
• 8:27
Speaker 1: photos if possible. Recording these details will ensure the defense
• 8:32
Speaker 1: attorney does not attempt to devalue the quality of your evidence,
• 8:36
Speaker 1: which may make it inadmissible. Data to identify the subject
• 8:41
Speaker 1: of the photograph, but without too much unnecessary information. The
• 8:45
Speaker 1: location of the photograph, including the state, city and street address.
• 8:49
Speaker 1: The identifying data of the photograph including the name, police agency,
• 8:53
Speaker 1: badge number and identification number. The case number of established
• 8:58
Speaker 1: at the time of dispatch, the precise time of the photograph,
• 9:01
Speaker 1: the date the photograph was taken, the weather at the time,
• 9:05
Speaker 1: the photographic equipment used, including shutter speeds, film type, developing
• 9:10
Speaker 1: and printing techniques. Next, photos of the specific room should
• 9:14
Speaker 1: be taken, with special attention to the living room in
• 9:17
Speaker 1: which the deceased woman was found. As the coordination of
• 9:20
Speaker 1: photos is focused inward, specific components of the crime, like
• 9:24
Speaker 1: physical evidence, should be accounted for and detailed. These should
• 9:28
Speaker 1: also be logged in my field notes. This physical evidence
• 9:32
Speaker 1: should be photographed next to a measurement marker, which can
• 9:35
Speaker 1: be a ruler or any other easily comparable object of
• 9:38
Speaker 1: well known size. The body in physical evidence to take
• 9:41
Speaker 1: a picture prior to collection from the forensic services and
• 9:44
Speaker 1: criminal investigator includes the deceased woman in the living room,
• 9:49
Speaker 1: who should be photographed under adequate lighting from a long view.
• 9:52
Speaker 1: Specific shots should be focused on the evidence of harm
• 9:55
Speaker 1: on her body in clothing, the bruises on her face,
• 9:58
Speaker 1: the marks on her neck, bloody shirt, and any other
• 10:01
Speaker 1: signs of post mortem lividity should be photographed and taped
• 10:04
Speaker 1: without moving the victim. A measurement marker should be placed
• 10:08
Speaker 1: next to her. This will show if an offender removed
• 10:10
Speaker 1: the woman as to manipulate the crime scene. Does she
• 10:13
Speaker 1: have defense wounds, Are their hesitation marks on her related
• 10:17
Speaker 1: to the knife, or are their multiple stab wounds? These
• 10:21
Speaker 1: must be photographed and taped. Is the mark on her
• 10:24
Speaker 1: neck related to the hangar nearer? The photographs make sure
• 10:28
Speaker 1: that these items were indeed present at the crime scene.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: Most of these questions are speculated until absolutely confirmed by
• 10:35
Speaker 1: the forensic medical examiner, who can use scientific equations to
• 10:39
Speaker 1: determine the approximate time of death. This is a maxim
• 10:43
Speaker 1: that stands even when the scene seems to point to
• 10:46
Speaker 1: the obvious. The time of death is never entirely accurate,
• 10:50
Speaker 1: but the photographs can aid in this process as they
• 10:52
Speaker 1: capture phenomenons such as rigor mortis or putrification. When the
• 10:56
Speaker 1: woman was found, the knife should be photographed under adequate
• 10:59
Speaker 1: light and a marker should be placed next to the
• 11:02
Speaker 1: knife to give the best photographic representation of the evidence.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: The mishappen code hanger should be photographed under adequate light
• 11:09
Speaker 1: and a measurement marker should be placed next to the evidence.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: The up ended furniture in children's furniture should be photographed
• 11:16
Speaker 1: firstly from a long view and then focused specifically on
• 11:19
Speaker 1: each piece of furniture under adequate lighting with a measurement marker.
• 11:24
Speaker 1: All of this should be well documented in the field
• 11:26
Speaker 1: notes and on the photograph. Is there any sign of
• 11:29
Speaker 1: forced entry to the home, This would be evident by
• 11:32
Speaker 1: broken glass from windows and pri marks on the door
• 11:35
Speaker 1: or windows surrounding the house. This should be photographed, videotaped
• 11:39
Speaker 1: and documented. If there is not forced entry, it may
• 11:43
Speaker 1: suggest that the woman newer killer. A video camera will
• 11:47
Speaker 1: be used as well to go over all the evidence
• 11:49
Speaker 1: which was photographed. Documentation of the video evidence should also
• 11:53
Speaker 1: be filled out and recorded in the field notes. All right,
• 11:57
Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up right here, and in the
• 11:58
Speaker 1: next episode, we're going to pick up where we left off,
• 12:01
Speaker 1: and that's with the crime scene sketch. All of the
• 12:05
Speaker 1: information that goes with this episode, including my contact information,
• 12:09
Speaker 1: can be found in the description box. What's up everyone,
• 12:12
Speaker 1: and welcome back to the program. In this episode, we're
• 12:15
Speaker 1: getting right back to that Brian Kolberger essay that he
• 12:19
Speaker 1: penned while at the Sallas University. The crime scene sketch.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: The crime scene sketch occurs after the scene was initially searched, photographed,
• 12:27
Speaker 1: and videotaped. The sketches of great value in criminal court.
• 12:31
Speaker 1: This sketch should be first done in pencil to ensure
• 12:34
Speaker 1: that the sketch accurately portrays evidence and measurements pertaining to
• 12:38
Speaker 1: the crime scene. The final version will be done in
• 12:41
Speaker 1: non perishable ink via pen The physical evidence of the crime,
• 12:45
Speaker 1: which includes, but it is not limited to, the knife,
• 12:48
Speaker 1: misshapen code, hangar, furniture, as well as any other biological
• 12:51
Speaker 1: evidence like bodily materials or fluids, should be drawn out
• 12:55
Speaker 1: in accurately measured proportions from each other and permanent objects
• 12:59
Speaker 1: in this crime scene sketch. The final search and confirmation
• 13:03
Speaker 1: by the forensic processing unit and the investigator will determine
• 13:07
Speaker 1: whether this was all the physical evidence at the scene.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: New evidence can be added to the crime scene sketch
• 13:13
Speaker 1: when new measurements are taken. The distance from permanent fixtures
• 13:17
Speaker 1: should be accurately recorded and depicted. The crime scene sketch
• 13:22
Speaker 1: should be measured by the criminal investigator and accurately display
• 13:25
Speaker 1: the proportions of the physical evidence. Any inaccurate portrayal of
• 13:29
Speaker 1: the location of evidence can influence the juror perception of
• 13:32
Speaker 1: the guilt or innocence of the suspect. While you do
• 13:36
Speaker 1: not need to be an artist, the responsibility of sketching
• 13:39
Speaker 1: should be taken with accuracy and a goal for a
• 13:42
Speaker 1: clear portrayal in mind. Though I can assign another officer
• 13:45
Speaker 1: to sketch it, I have decided to take this task on.
• 13:49
Speaker 1: A twenty five foot steel measuring tape should be used
• 13:52
Speaker 1: to record these exact and accurately recorded measurements of the
• 13:55
Speaker 1: physical evidence and permanent objects in the house. Too much
• 14:00
Speaker 1: details shouldn't be included in the sketch. As to avoid confusion.
• 14:03
Speaker 1: Movable items unrelated to the crime scene convey details irrelevant
• 14:07
Speaker 1: to the crime and will be avoided. Extraneous detail, including
• 14:12
Speaker 1: movable furniture, may cause issues if jurors recognize that items
• 14:16
Speaker 1: in the house were moved after the fact, This would
• 14:19
Speaker 1: be equivalent to crime scene contamination and may render evidence inadmissible.
• 14:24
  Speaker 2: The living room.
• 14:25
Speaker 1: Should be sketched out with the deceased woman being drawn
• 14:27
Speaker 1: in proportion to the knife, coat hanger, abended furniture and
• 14:31
Speaker 1: children's furniture, walls and permanent objects in the house. Other
• 14:36
Speaker 1: rooms that are relevant should be included in the sketch.
• 14:40
Speaker 1: I've decided to use rectangular coordination method, with two right
• 14:43
Speaker 1: angles being outlined in proportion to the physical evidence and
• 14:47
Speaker 1: permanent fixtures centering around.
• 14:49
  Speaker 2: The living room.
• 14:50
Speaker 1: A projection can be used to document biological trace evidence
• 14:54
Speaker 1: the bloodstains or other physical evidence that imprinted on the walls.
• 14:58
Speaker 1: Bullet holes would be something that that should be ruled out,
• 15:01
Speaker 1: and if bullet holes are present, they should be documented
• 15:04
Speaker 1: on the three D exploded sketch before the drywall is
• 15:07
  Speaker 1: removed via saw.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: Though it appears obvious.
• 15:10
Speaker 1: That the knife was used in this crime, we do
• 15:12
Speaker 1: not know this for sure, and should make sure to
• 15:15
Speaker 1: document everything and look for less apparent evidence. Even if
• 15:19
Speaker 1: there was an item introduced to the scene by an
• 15:22
Speaker 1: offender to throw off investigators, it's not the job of
• 15:25
Speaker 1: the criminal investigator processing the crime scene to jump to conclusions.
• 15:30
Speaker 1: The crime lab will be able to decipher with scientific
• 15:33
Speaker 1: certainty what is and is not an original element of
• 15:36
Speaker 1: the crime. Staging is common. For example, the offender may
• 15:40
Speaker 1: have taken items from the house to make it look
• 15:42
Speaker 1: like a burglary turned robbery which went wrong. The official
• 15:46
Speaker 1: crime preliminary report should include the accurate sketch with the
• 15:50
Speaker 1: following details included. The name of the investigator and identifying
• 15:54
Speaker 1: badge number. A detailed location of the scene, such as
• 15:57
Speaker 1: the city, state, and street address living room should be
• 16:00
Speaker 1: noted as the center of the sketch, the date in
• 16:04
Speaker 1: exact time the sketch was first drawn in pencil, the
• 16:07
Speaker 1: evidence listing key which shows evidence as a corresponds to
• 16:10
Speaker 1: a letter or mark indicated in said key, the case
• 16:14
Speaker 1: number of the investigation. A compass arrow to give direction.
• 16:17
Speaker 1: The scale of the sketch should be included, or the
• 16:20
Speaker 1: words not drawn to scale. Choosing to draw it to
• 16:23
Speaker 1: scale where one fourth inch equals one foot. The computer
• 16:27
Speaker 1: aided design program CAAD, which uses laser lights and takes
• 16:31
Speaker 1: up to twenty five thousand measurements per second in three D,
• 16:34
Speaker 1: may be utilized if available. For the scale of the
• 16:37
Speaker 1: scene so it's most accurate. I would request the CD
• 16:41
Speaker 1: if available, for it gives the best betrayal of this
• 16:43
Speaker 1: serious crime, allowing for an accurate point of view and
• 16:47
Speaker 1: zooming of particular elements of the crime scene. The more
• 16:50
Speaker 1: comprehensive crime scene search using the strip search method in
• 16:54
Speaker 1: order to collect evidence from the interior of the residence,
• 16:57
Speaker 1: I will assign roles to officers on the scene, briefing
• 17:00
Speaker 1: them to watch where they are stepping and not act
• 17:03
Speaker 1: impulsively or without great care. Hasty actions will lead to
• 17:07
Speaker 1: valuable evidence being trampled and lost. The strip search method
• 17:11
Speaker 1: is what I have decided on as it allows for
• 17:13
Speaker 1: the interior of the crime scene to be searched from
• 17:16
Speaker 1: one end to the other with more than one officer
• 17:19
Speaker 1: or forensic processing unit. The exterior of the property should
• 17:23
Speaker 1: be searched from one end to the other as well,
• 17:25
Speaker 1: switching to a grid search if necessary. Walking from one
• 17:29
Speaker 1: end to the scene to the opposite end of the scene.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: I will then turn around and cover ground to the
• 17:33
Speaker 1: right or left without stepping on the same spot twice.
• 17:38
Speaker 1: The rooms of the trailer should be searched in this method,
• 17:40
Speaker 1: with special attention to the living room where the victim lies.
• 17:44
Speaker 1: Assigning a CSI or officer and myself to this section
• 17:48
Speaker 1: living room would allow that the scene is thoroughly checked.
• 17:51
Speaker 1: As I move from one end to the other, I
• 17:53
Speaker 1: will make sure that I shine my flashlight ahead of
• 17:56
Speaker 1: myself to ensure that I do not damage or carry
• 17:59
Speaker 1: away smaller pieces of physical evidence. Smaller items of physical
• 18:03
Speaker 1: evidence include woodchips, hairs, pink flakes, glass fragments, or small fibers.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: If not careful, these may be lost before even accounting
• 18:12
Speaker 1: for or observing them. If new pieces of physical evidence
• 18:16
Speaker 1: are uncovered, I will take note of it for documentation
• 18:19
Speaker 1: and photography videography. Things such as footprints inside and outside
• 18:24
Speaker 1: should be prepared to be photographed and videotaped. I must
• 18:27
Speaker 1: photograph and videotape the new evidence, as well as log
• 18:31
Speaker 1: it with the following information and account for it in
• 18:33
Speaker 1: the crime scene sketch. The time and date of evidence discovered,
• 18:37
Speaker 1: the location that I found the evidence, the name of
• 18:40
Speaker 1: myself or whichever officers CSI or criminal investigator discovered it.
• 18:46
Speaker 1: As this is a serious crime, I have chosen the
• 18:48
Speaker 1: specialized crime scene personnel will assist me. A description of
• 18:52
Speaker 1: the evidence, any identifying marks to further detail the evidence.
• 18:56
Speaker 1: The name of an officer who witnessed the find. This
• 18:59
Speaker 1: will ensure that there is no question that it was
• 19:01
Speaker 1: indeed an element of the original crime scene. This will
• 19:04
Speaker 1: save the investigators setbacks in court. All the information that
• 19:08
Speaker 1: is carefully recorded regarding the crime scene evidence aids the
• 19:12
Speaker 1: crime report. The location of this evidence is very important
• 19:16
Speaker 1: for it may give us the following information. Establish the
• 19:19
Speaker 1: tracing of or identification of the suspect, establishing the suspects
• 19:23
Speaker 1: MOO or identifying similar mos via information added to the
• 19:28
Speaker 1: FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program for the completed crime report.
• 19:33
Speaker 1: Confirming alibis or exposing lies, disproving the alibi, connecting suspects
• 19:38
Speaker 1: to the crime, or eliminating suspects. The identification of contraband,
• 19:42
Speaker 1: stolen property and other illegal items. Identifying victims if they
• 19:46
Speaker 1: are not identified. For example, we can't assume the woman
• 19:50
Speaker 1: lives at this residence before confirming it. A dead body
• 19:53
Speaker 1: may not initially be tied to the residence, providing investigative leads,
• 19:59
Speaker 1: for example, checking into the husband or boyfriend and the
• 20:02
Speaker 1: location of the children based on the crime scene evidence
• 20:05
Speaker 1: is warranted providing a statutory element of the offense, the
• 20:09
Speaker 1: collection of items of evidence like the crime scene photography.
• 20:13
Speaker 1: Larger items of physical evidence are taken first. This includes
• 20:17
Speaker 1: the dishevel furniture, in children's furniture, cell phone, and computer.
• 20:21
Speaker 1: If they're the knife and code hanger. The body will
• 20:24
Speaker 1: be taken later by a CSI with a coroner for
• 20:27
Speaker 1: custody to wait for analysis by forensic medical examiner trained
• 20:32
Speaker 1: to perform the autopsy. The knife should be examined for
• 20:35
Speaker 1: latent fingerprints to be logged separately, same with the coat hanger,
• 20:39
Speaker 1: doorknobs around the house, upended furniture, cell phone, and virtually
• 20:43
Speaker 1: any physical evidence big enough to grab. Crimes of passion
• 20:46
Speaker 1: are rooted in emotionality and impulsivity. If this is the case,
• 20:51
Speaker 1: we can likely count on their being latent fingerprints on
• 20:54
Speaker 1: the doorknob and all over the knife and victim. Smaller
• 20:58
Speaker 1: items of the biological or trace evidences, such as hair
• 21:01
Speaker 1: fibers from clothing must be collected using metal forceps or
• 21:05
Speaker 1: tweezers as to avoid damaging this delicate evidence which may
• 21:09
Speaker 1: hold significant value to the criminal investigation. Fingerprints in footprints
• 21:14
Speaker 1: or class evidence to be taken with molds or fingerprinting kit.
• 21:17
Speaker 1: Fingerprints should be entered into AFIS. I should use a
• 21:22
Speaker 1: swab where applicable to collect fluids or skin cells which
• 21:25
Speaker 1: contain DNA. The shirt likely contains not only the blood
• 21:29
Speaker 1: of the woman, but the blood of the possible offender.
• 21:32
Speaker 1: DNA from biological evidence should be swabbed, placed in a vial,
• 21:35
Speaker 1: documented in notes and on the container for the evidence
• 21:38
Speaker 1: chain of custody, and included to be sent to the
• 21:41
Speaker 1: crime lab. The shirt will later be bagged and taken
• 21:45
Speaker 1: separately as physical evidence. I should make sure to swab
• 21:48
Speaker 1: under her fingernails to see if DNA of the offender
• 21:51
Speaker 1: is there. She likely dug into their skin. Is there
• 21:54
Speaker 1: evidence of sexual assault or semen present? This evidence should
• 21:58
Speaker 1: be marked, swabbed and collected in a glass vial or
• 22:01
Speaker 1: a cellophane bag. Is there evidence of personation? Did the
• 22:05
Speaker 1: offender take something or did the offender display an excessive
• 22:08
Speaker 1: need for control over the victim? As demonstrated by a
• 22:11
Speaker 1: possible sexual assault and murder. These are the observations to
• 22:15
Speaker 1: be recorded, though not conclusively, during the searching phase. The
• 22:19
Speaker 1: evidence should be marked with a following information in the
• 22:21
Speaker 1: field notes and later in the evidence seal packaging. I'm
• 22:25
Speaker 1: choosing to bag all evidence and not directly market for
• 22:28
Speaker 1: it will be sent to the forensic lab. The size
• 22:31
Speaker 1: of the object, the physical nature of the object, is
• 22:34
Speaker 1: it solid or liquid. If the evidence is a liquid,
• 22:37
Speaker 1: it should always be kept in an error tight container
• 22:39
Speaker 1: such as a cellophane bag or a glass vial, and
• 22:42
Speaker 1: marked the value of the object and number of like objects,
• 22:46
Speaker 1: the case number pertaining to the evidence, the date and
• 22:50
Speaker 1: exact time retrieved, the initials of the person who marked
• 22:53
Speaker 1: the evidence BK. In this case, this process should be
• 22:56
Speaker 1: done as many times as needed. It may have curR
• 23:00
Speaker 1: up to one thousand or more times. It must be
• 23:02
Speaker 1: counted accurately and the quantity should be accurately recorded on
• 23:07
Speaker 1: the container packaging the evidence for the forensic lab. Each
• 23:10
Speaker 1: item that I collect, including but not limited to, the knife,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: coat hanger, and bloody clothing on the woman, must be
• 23:16
Speaker 1: packaged in the proper way for forensic lab analysis. I
• 23:20
Speaker 1: must use separate containers for evidence, not mixing things up
• 23:23
Speaker 1: and causing confusion, no matter how daunting this may be.
• 23:28
Speaker 1: I must use new, clean packaging that was not previously
• 23:31
Speaker 1: used as to avoid contamination. Obviously, blood and other biological
• 23:35
Speaker 1: evidence renders a container spent. Avoiding metal containers which can
• 23:40
Speaker 1: be reused is ideal to confirm the container is indeed
• 23:43
Speaker 1: disposed of. Afterward, the package must be sealed with a
• 23:47
Speaker 1: strong medium such as strong tape. Items of clothing need
• 23:50
Speaker 1: to be kept as is and not folded. I must
• 23:53
Speaker 1: keep evidence that was found in a container as it
• 23:56
Speaker 1: is in market. I must include a letter of transmittal
• 23:59
Speaker 1: to state what type of analysis must be done, for
• 24:02
Speaker 1: example wound analysis, DNA or fingerprinting, even ballistics. Again, I
• 24:09
Speaker 1: must account for and log all this evidence in the
• 24:11
Speaker 1: chain of custody form where it was found, how when,
• 24:14
Speaker 1: who is transporting it, and where is the evidence locker located.
• 24:18
Speaker 1: The woman must be removed by a certified professional and sealed,
• 24:22
Speaker 1: taken into custody by the coroner, and sent to the
• 24:25
Speaker 1: forensic medical examiner for forensic autopsy. This must all be
• 24:29
Speaker 1: logged in the field notes and initial crime report before
• 24:32
Speaker 1: compiled in the closing report. The crime scene will be
• 24:35
Speaker 1: surveyed if necessary, but the longer the time it takes
• 24:38
Speaker 1: to do so, the more the chance the crime scene
• 24:41
Speaker 1: is contaminated. When meld, I must always send this evidence
• 24:45
Speaker 1: in registered mail and closed with a secure receipt. This
• 24:49
Speaker 1: careful collection of evidence is all necessary for the crime
• 24:52
Speaker 1: lab criminalists to be capable of analyzing all elements of
• 24:56
Speaker 1: the crime, being that they rarely come to the scene.
• 25:00
Speaker 1: Evidence chain of custody and inventory receipts. The careful description
• 25:04
Speaker 1: of evidence, When and where the evidence was found and
• 25:07
Speaker 1: who found it are all related to the evidence chain
• 25:09
Speaker 1: of custody. All evidence must be described and then transported
• 25:14
Speaker 1: and placed in an evidence locker. The identity of the
• 25:17
Speaker 1: transporter and the location of the evidence locker must be
• 25:20
Speaker 1: accounted for. If the evidence is taken out of the
• 25:23
Speaker 1: locker at the police department, it must be recorded who
• 25:26
Speaker 1: did so and why they did so. The knife mishappened, wire,
• 25:30
Speaker 1: coat hanger, and any physical, biological or trace evidence must
• 25:33
Speaker 1: be found and accounted for, bagged and sealed, and then
• 25:37
Speaker 1: kept in an evidence locker. Her bloody clothing should be
• 25:40
Speaker 1: examined as well, but this would infer that she must
• 25:43
Speaker 1: be moved and have items of clothing removed. This is
• 25:46
Speaker 1: something the forensic crime scene processing unit should do. If
• 25:49
Speaker 1: she had a cell phone or computer nearby, this should
• 25:52
Speaker 1: be described, blogged and transported to the digital forensic lab
• 25:56
Speaker 1: for digital forensic examination. Did she communicate with anyone? Did
• 26:00
Speaker 1: this communication indicate a conflict? Did her husband or boyfriend contactor?
• 26:05
Speaker 1: Did anyone else contactor? This may help investigators look in
• 26:08
Speaker 1: the right direction if things turn out not to be
• 26:11
Speaker 1: so obvious. Again, we can't assume it was the husband
• 26:14
Speaker 1: or boyfriend just because there may have been a history
• 26:16
Speaker 1: of domestic violence or PFA, despite this being very common. Also,
• 26:21
Speaker 1: she may have children's furniture for her nieces or nephews,
• 26:25
Speaker 1: so we can't assume that she had kids when moved.
• 26:28
Speaker 1: All items will have inventory receipts which document the movement
• 26:32
Speaker 1: for the chain of custody form. All of this is
• 26:35
Speaker 1: for the accountability and integrity of the evidence and thus
• 26:38
Speaker 1: the proper outcome of the criminal investigation. Failing to do
• 26:42
Speaker 1: so leads to injustice. There can be very clear link
• 26:45
Speaker 1: between victim and offender, but if this is not accounted
• 26:48
Speaker 1: for via chain of custody, then it will be inadmissible
• 26:52
Speaker 1: outreach the other agencies and immediate elements of the investigation.
• 26:56
Speaker 1: A lot of these inquiries would occur concurrently with the
• 26:59
Speaker 1: crimes investigation. Does she have kids? The County Record's office
• 27:03
Speaker 1: should give us the information. If so, the welfare of
• 27:06
Speaker 1: the children should be ensured. We are aware that there
• 27:09
Speaker 1: are disheveled items of children's furniture around, but where are
• 27:12
Speaker 1: the kids. Calls to be made to all family members
• 27:15
Speaker 1: of the deceased would help narrow down locations. Calls to
• 27:19
Speaker 1: the Clerk of Court's office to see if there is
• 27:21
Speaker 1: a PFA out on the husband or boyfriend should be made.
• 27:24
Speaker 1: The husband or boyfriend of the deceased woman should be
• 27:27
Speaker 1: contacted to establish an alibi. He needs to be immediately
• 27:30
Speaker 1: located and questioned. The kids should be located as soon
• 27:34
Speaker 1: as possible, and an amber alert should be set if
• 27:37
Speaker 1: they are not accounted for. Does their father even have
• 27:39
Speaker 1: rights to see the kids under normal circumstances and did
• 27:43
Speaker 1: he take them? Neighbors should be questioned to see if
• 27:46
Speaker 1: the father was around or if any suspicious person was present.
• 27:50
Speaker 1: Anyone who normally passes the scene, such as a mailman,
• 27:53
Speaker 1: should be questioned and an alibi established. Where were the
• 27:57
Speaker 1: neighbors when this happened. Their alibi should be evident and supported.
• 28:01
Speaker 1: Did they notice anything unusual? Maybe the father was seen
• 28:04
Speaker 1: with the kids leaving the scene. This can be important evidence.
• 28:07
Speaker 1: If the father is not responding and the kids are
• 28:10
Speaker 1: not located, the Amber alert can be set based on
• 28:13
Speaker 1: the vehicle plate numbers and description of the father. If applicable.
• 28:18
Speaker 1: Eyewitness and surveillance footage in the trailer park, surrounding area,
• 28:22
Speaker 1: drug store which oversees the trailer, or a nearby gas
• 28:25
Speaker 1: station can give us information on this crime. Surveillance footage
• 28:30
Speaker 1: is circumstantial evidence, but may lead investigators in the right
• 28:33
Speaker 1: direction to the apprehension of the suspect. If we can't
• 28:36
Speaker 1: gather conclusive information by the end of the investigation, the
• 28:40
Speaker 1: FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program YCAP can help. ViCAP can
• 28:46
Speaker 1: be utilized if this case happens to be unrelated to
• 28:48
Speaker 1: a domestic dispute. This may be the work of a
• 28:51
Speaker 1: serial killer, though this is highly unlikely. Still, we are
• 28:54
Speaker 1: only looking at the facts of the investigation rather than conjecture,
• 28:59
Speaker 1: and we can only say for sure once the suspect
• 29:01
Speaker 1: is apprehended and the evidence is strong enough to say
• 29:04
Speaker 1: what happened with scientific certainty. The compilation of evidence in
• 29:08
Speaker 1: the preliminary report, progress report, closing report, and prosecution report
• 29:13
Speaker 1: my notes enabled what I wrote a thorough and accurate
• 29:16
Speaker 1: preliminary case report which contained all the facts of the case.
• 29:20
Speaker 1: I will need to update it with progress reports as
• 29:22
Speaker 1: we track down suspects and eventually create the closing and
• 29:26
Speaker 1: prosecution reports, which will be used in court if we
• 29:29
Speaker 1: get evidence of a specific person who committed this specific crime.
• 29:34
Speaker 1: The closing report will be the culmination of all the
• 29:36
Speaker 1: facts of the investigation and lab analysis which led to
• 29:40
Speaker 1: the most accurate reconstruction of the scene possible. The steps
• 29:44
Speaker 1: that I have listed will ensure that the prosecution report
• 29:47
Speaker 1: and closing report reflect a proper investigative procedure with full
• 29:51
Speaker 1: admissibility of evidence into court. All the notifications were made,
• 29:56
Speaker 1: and the evidence chain of custody and investigative procedure ensure
• 29:59
Speaker 1: the integrity and accuracy of the evidence of the crime scene.
• 30:03
Speaker 1: With thorough documentation, it is unlikely that the defense will
• 30:07
Speaker 1: be able to discredit the investigation and render the evidence inadmissible.
• 30:12
Speaker 1: This clear information will allow the jury to deliberate based
• 30:15
Speaker 1: on all the evidence. Finally, adding this information to the
• 30:19
Speaker 1: FBI's National Incident Based Report System and IBRS will allow
• 30:23
Speaker 1: the FBI's Uniform Crime Report UCR to give summative information
• 30:28
Speaker 1: of all applicable crimes to help police officers, criminologists, and
• 30:32
Speaker 1: criminal investigators understand the social trends of crimes, thus aiding
• 30:36
Speaker 1: future cases. All right, So that's going to do it
• 30:38
Speaker 1: for the Brian Koberger essay. And to say that its
• 30:42
Speaker 1: damming is an understatement considering all of the other evidence
• 30:45
Speaker 1: that we've seen so far and how this fits right
• 30:48
Speaker 1: in with that evidence. So it's going to be very
• 30:51
Speaker 1: interesting to see which way Judge Hitler goes as far
• 30:54
Speaker 1: as admitting this or not. Either way, we're going to
• 30:56
Speaker 1: stay on top of it, and when we have some
• 30:58
Speaker 1: more information, you better leave.
• 31:00
Speaker 2: It'll get added to the catalog. All of the
• 31:03
Speaker 1: Information that goes with this episode can be found in
• 31:06
  Speaker 1: the description box.
