- 0:01Thank you so much for joining us today, Elijah.
- 0:03It's great to have you here.
- 0:05Thanks, I'm very glad to be here.
- 0:09So how has the rehearsal process for SpongeBob the musical been so far?
- 0:13It's been really fun, honestly.
- 0:15It's been...
- 0:17We started a couple months ago, so it's just been a blast, like learning the choreography and learning the music.
- 0:24It's really fun.
- 0:26So how familiar were you with SpongeBob before being cast on the show?
- 0:30Not very familiar, honestly.
- 0:32I never grew up with SpongeBob.
- 0:35Like, I never watched the show growing up, but just like getting to learn all the music and everything, it's been really fun.
- 0:42So, you know, this was not like a formative show growing up for you.
- 0:48That's fair.
- 0:49So what is the story of SpongeBob the musical and then what character are you playing and how does it factor into the narrative of the show?
- 0:56So I'm playing Mr.
- 0:58Krabs in the show and in SpongeBob the musical, they find out that the citizens of Bikini Bottom, find out that the volcano, Mount Humongous, is going to erupt and basically just
- 1:14going to obliterate Bikini Bottom.
- 1:17so it kind of, the show tells the story of like different characters and how they react to that and what they're going to do.
- 1:25now that their town is going to be obliterated, basically.
- 1:32It sounds like in true SpongeBob fashion, it's kind of dark mixed with a lot of light there.
- 1:40I have not seen this show, but I assume it's very comedic, correct?
- 1:43Yes, oh definitely, yeah, which also follows with the show a little bit.
- 1:50How do you feel like it balances that tone then of like obliterating bikini bottoms, but also being funny about it?
- 1:56Yeah, so I feel like they do take it seriously, but at the same time, in the same amount, they're also adding humor to that aspect.
- 2:08So it takes kind of the darkness out of it.
- 2:14I think it balances out very nicely.
- 2:17Right, you're kind of laughing about like the ridiculousness of the situation.
- 2:20Definitely, yeah.
- 2:22Does Mr.
- 2:23Krabs kind of have his own journey within the story?
- 2:27Yes, yeah, but I'd say his character arc doesn't fall until very near the end of the show.
- 2:37Okay.
- 2:39So this is a musical, obviously.
- 2:40So they put music to a brand that everybody knows quite well.
- 2:47How do you feel like the music enhances the story of SpongeBob and his friends?
- 2:51So it's actually really interesting, the music in this show.
- 2:56It was written by several different artists.
- 3:00Each song is written by a different artist.
- 3:02I'm not sure if you were familiar with that or not, but I think like one song's written by Yolanda Adams, another song's written by They Are Giants and...
- 3:17Brendan Urie from Panic at the Disco.
- 3:19It's just so each song is like unique in its own.
- 3:22Each one's got like a different style.
- 3:23There's like a rock song.
- 3:24There's a gospel song.
- 3:26And I just think it's really cool.
- 3:28That's awesome.
- 3:29I didn't know that there was a few different artists that were involved with this because I was a very big panic at the disco person back in the day and I know they do one of the
- 3:37songs.
- 3:39Do you have a favorite song from the show?
- 3:44it might be towards the end of the show, Squidward has a solo number and it's a tap number.
- 3:51So it's very like, it's very like, old Broadway kind of like kick line and stuff like that.
- 3:59So I kind of like that one.
- 4:01That sounds like that's a really exciting one to kind of see.
- 4:04And a lot of theatrical ability needed for that.
- 4:10And have you acted before?
- 4:12Yes, I have.
- 4:14This is my 23rd production, I think, since 2019.
- 4:20That is a lot of productions.
- 4:22How does this one kind of compare to some of your past ones?
- 4:27when I first started out, I was mostly doing youth theatre, so from ages like 12 to 18, pretty much.
- 4:36So now that I'm graduated from high school, I'm trying out for shows that have older people and then more seasoned actors.
- 4:46So it's definitely a change, but I'm enjoying it a lot.
- 4:51What has been a highlight of your time on this production?
- 4:57I guess I'd say like, I think getting to work with the production staff and the cast, I'm meeting like so many different people and it's really great to like get to know everyone,
- 5:09I'd say.
- 5:11And for Mr.
- 5:12Krabs, because he's a very specific character, know, he's kind of, he, you know, he's got the, he's got the greedy side.
- 5:19He's very funny, but he's, he's got a little more seriousness to it.
- 5:21How do you get into the mindset of this character?
- 5:26I took to YouTube a lot and watched a lot of videos because as I said before it I never grew up with spongebob so I had to like Yeah, like you said I have to get into the mindset
- 5:37of that character.
- 5:38I had to learn a character voice change my posture all of that stuff
- 5:45It's a lot to kind of balance as you're trying to develop this character, know, make it your own, but also be true to the source material.
- 5:52Definitely.
- 5:54How has this role challenged you as an actor?
- 5:58So, I normally haven't played roles like this before.
- 6:04Normally, I feel like my typecast would be like maybe like the male ingenue, you know, a little bit younger, which Mr.
- 6:13Krabs, that's like the opposite, you know, got like a gruff voice.
- 6:17He's basically like one of his only personality traits is his money.
- 6:22So, yeah, it's definitely challenged me and pushed me to like...
- 6:27different boundaries that I haven't explored before, but I think it's definitely good for me.
- 6:34Absolutely.
- 6:35And have you had to try on the costume yet?
- 6:37I know that your opening night is this.
- 6:40yeah.
- 6:40So yesterday and the day before were our full dress rehearsals and we got to do like full hair, full makeup, we were doing it with sound.
- 6:49It was a blast and with that you get to see like everyone's characters coming out even more.
- 6:54So the show is really fitting together now.
- 6:58is that like, what is that like as an actor finally getting to kind of put on that costume and assume that role?
- 7:05So probably not for every actor, but I'd say for me, I feel my character coming out a lot more once I finally put the costume on, which I think is just very interesting to see.
- 7:20I'm sure like, you know, it's kind of like that last piece, you know, like you've done the voice, you've made the, you know, you've made those changes, your physicality, your voice,
- 7:31and then getting to put on that costume and kind of assume the role.
- 7:35Yeah, definitely.
- 7:37What themes of SpongeBob the musical do you feel like resonate the most with you?
- 7:45I think one thing and like one moral of the story that I really like is in the end like they all like come together and bond to like save their town and like they just put their
- 7:57differences aside you know kind of and they just come together I kind of like that yeah
- 8:03a great one.
- 8:05And what do you audiences walk away from this musical with?
- 8:10I hope it just puts audiences in a better mood.
- 8:13You know, it's a really fun show.
- 8:16The music's very upbeat.
- 8:18I hope just we can take the audience and like give them a fun afternoon or evening to remember.
- 8:27That's awesome.
