- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley and the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Crispino
- 0:04with the coach and Dan. The Big East Awards came out over the last
- 0:10twenty four to forty eight hours, and I don't know that I'm surprised.
- 0:15I mean, I think a lot of Yukon Huskies deserved what they got.
- 0:18Well, we'll get to Alex Caraban in a second. I'm not sure he
- 0:22deserves I mean, I'm sure he deserved more than he got. But anyway,
- 0:25let's start with Newton and Spencer in the back court. I mean,
- 0:29you have had this these two guys together now just for this year, but
- 0:34you had Newton last year. I know you called him fire and ice.
- 0:37I love that. They're two different guys, but they bring something special to
- 0:42the court, not only individually but as a payer, don't they. Yeah,
- 0:47I mean they should be in my mind, you know, co players
- 0:51of the Year in the league. You know, I think that would be
- 0:54fitting for first for Tristan and Cam or you know, or if it's uh
- 1:00or if it's just team new just uh it just what just you know,
- 1:07the biggest uh, you know, the the what was it that we won
- 1:11the league by the most games in the history of the conference. We went
- 1:15eighteen and two with three potential final four teams in the league this year and
- 1:21a six or seven bid league potentially, and up until one point, Butler
- 1:26was still kind of in that mix too, so the league was really really
- 1:29tough. Those two guys have been just awesome. Uh. You know,
- 1:34Tristan with the triple doubles and you know, leading us scoring, rebounding and
- 1:38assists. I mean, like the player on the team that you know leads
- 1:45you and points, assists in rebounding, and with the defense that he plays
- 1:49and with to clutch clutch stuff. And then Cam the fifty to forty ninety
- 1:55guy that hit you shots the whole year. You know, those guys fully
- 2:00deserved First Team and definitely deserve Player of the Year. Yeah. I'm gonna
- 2:06date myself a little bit here, but Newton reminds me of what Oscar Robertson
- 2:10used to do back in his day, which is a way ways to go.
- 2:14But I mean, the dude could score, he would rebound, he
- 2:16had all kinds of assists. Newton does the same thing every night, even
- 2:21if he doesn't shoot it well, if he goes three for nine, he
- 2:23ends up in double figures, but he gets almost ten rebounds. His assistant
- 2:28turnover ratio is always very good. I mean that is really a special skill,
- 2:32isn't it for any guy in the back court? Yeah? Definitely.
- 2:38That's why I think the the NBA is much higher on Tristan than maybe people.
- 2:44People are aware, you know, internally, they love his size,
- 2:47they love his ability to guard multiple positions, and the range on the shot.
- 2:53You know, he he's just been such a He's had such an incredible
- 2:59magical career since it's been here. You know again, I don't is there
- 3:05a better Is there a guard that's accomplished more over a two year period and
- 3:10you know, played at an incredibly high level and then one as much as
- 3:14he's won, you know who, Yeah, winning trumps everything. We all
- 3:22know that. And the thing about both of these guys, they seem to
- 3:25have Dan have a knack for when you need something, something's got to happen.
- 3:30Huskies need a bucket, need a rebound, need and assist, need
- 3:35a steal. I mean that is a skill. I don't know if you
- 3:38can coach that stuff, But man, when you got guys like Newton,
- 3:42and spencer that can deliver it. It has to make your life a little
- 3:46easier. Yeah, I mean, you know, even the other night in
- 3:47Milwaukee, you know where you you're on the road, it's uh, you
- 3:53know, it's it's a great environment. You know, the people there and
- 3:57markt you have great respect for their program and their fans because it's it's an
- 4:01awesome environment and they're real advantageous, uh you know for Marquette, and it's
- 4:06hard to play there, but it's not vile and uh you know, it's
- 4:13more just an incredible atmosphere and a home court advantage, you know, unlike
- 4:16other places that we go. And then uh yeah and Camy. So we
- 4:23start that game, Tristan Starry went to get that off my chest. Tristan,
- 4:27yes, of course, the first five points of that game for us,
- 4:30just to get something on the board so the team could relax. Or
- 4:32maybe it's Cam you know, down the stretch hitting dagger shots and and uh
- 4:39putting the other team away and then letting them know that it's over. So
- 4:43yeah, I mean those guys have have been an awesome backcourt obviously, Houston
- 4:47and some other places have incredible back courts where I think we all think we
- 4:51got the best back court in the country. Yeah, i'd say what,
- 4:55it's been a pleasure watching these guys. Hey, these two road games this
- 4:58week something that we have I haven't seen much ukon't falling behind right right.
- 5:02You scored the first five at Murkrat Marquette, like you said, but then
- 5:06gave up twelve in a row. You're down seven, uh, Providence fifteen
- 5:11to two year down. I mean that hasn't happened very much this year.
- 5:15Well, how do you rate what the team did under those circumstances to get
- 5:19back on track and was that a step in the kind of forward for the
- 5:24team as a group, do you think? I mean you can't. Yeah,
- 5:28you're you're not always gonna you know, start start fast. I know
- 5:32we all want to, and uh every coach preaches it, but you play
- 5:39some really good teams and you know, maybe you miss shots, maybe you
- 5:43know execute stuff, and uh, you do have to show, you know,
- 5:46a mental toughness and a togetherness. And I think our group has shown
- 5:51in terms of the chemistry and the belief where you know, we're able to
- 5:57uh, you know, to go on runs in both first half of that
- 6:00game too. By halftime uh, you know, being a pretty comfortable position.
- 6:05Yeah, take us inside the huddle if you will. And when you
- 6:08got down in those two games on the road, obviously hostile environments, a
- 6:12lot of people don't want to see you win the other the other guys got
- 6:15the great crowds Marquette Providence. Uh what what went on in those first huddles
- 6:20when things weren't going well and you guys had fallen behind. Yeah, I
- 6:25mean there was obviously, you know, an animation to the way that the
- 6:30staff was talking to the players about you know, blocking everything out, maximum
- 6:38effort, maximum attention to detail, you know, get lost offensively and playing
- 6:45for each other, get lost in movement. Uh. I mean there's this
- 6:48technical things going on. There's there's tactical things, there's uh, you know,
- 6:55empowering and confidence building. There's honesty, there's what's that brutal honesty?
- 7:03Maybe well sometimes, I mean sometimes you don't want to on game night.
- 7:06That's why I think in practice I am just a total I lied to them
- 7:12on game night, but in practice I do because you're lessing a player unless
- 7:15they're giving you just a bad effort, you need to build them up on
- 7:19game night because generally they they want to play well. Uh, you know
- 7:26they're not purposely failing in front of twenty thousand people. You know, they
- 7:30oftentimes need to be build them up. Yeah, that's that's good. That's
- 7:35good. That's the right way to do it. That's for sure. A
- 7:38right back when Dan Hurley just a minute, I promise we talk about these
- 7:41awards. We got to get to Castle, we got to get to d
- 7:44R, we got to get to cling in caravan. So much to talk
- 7:46about. Back in a moment on the ucon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan
- 7:50Hurley onlear Field,
