- 2:38Speaker 2: Now he's kind of gun money and he's hit one
- 2:41Speaker 2: in the cough of dear gas launches. When isn't from
- 2:42Speaker 2: the roof across the street. I'm thinking a half how

- 2:47Speaker 1: Little talent.

- 3:07Speaker 2: We're gonna cast him out. Go on morning call for lunchers.
- 3:11Speaker 2: That huge. Please listen to me. Wait no, why not
- 3:13Speaker 2: tell me the whole story. We got nothing but time
- 3:15Speaker 2: until I get here.
- 3:16Speaker 5: With those launches.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Please, matt he was a quick kid. No, buddy, it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: a kidding Mano. That boy up there is I can
- 3:20Speaker 2: I keep watching that rope becker to make it curious? Well, Mallo,
- 3:25Speaker 2: this story you got a goout ten minutes ago the beginning, Mollo,
- 3:29Speaker 2: go on, Phil, I'm trying to start at the front.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'm a suck up for the pad, and you're gonna
- 3:33Speaker 2: have Abby pull and cheer. I guess right, okay, Matthew,
- 3:36Speaker 2: So I'll start at the front and skip nothing. Right,
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'll stop where it started four hours ago. At five
- 3:40Speaker 2: o'clock this evening, I'm fifteen miles from here, on the
- 3:42Speaker 2: outskirts of a little town of San Fernando. A telephone
- 3:45Speaker 2: called from a woman whose voice and said that she
- 3:47Speaker 2: was old and Spanish and very worried. It brought me
- 3:49Speaker 2: out of the place, a woman named Senor Andrade, who
- 3:52Speaker 2: told me that her only boy was heading for a
- 3:54Speaker 2: lot of trouble and that I had to stop him.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Andrade home stood out like a thoroughbred alongside the old
- 4:00Speaker 2: man's horse in comparison to the other houses squatting on
- 4:03Speaker 2: the Sunbay soil. And the Senora herself, at maybe sixty
- 4:06Speaker 2: and in a cheap black cotton dress, lay shawl on
- 4:09Speaker 2: homemade slippers, as the tidiest person I ever seen. But
- 4:13Speaker 2: she bowed from the waist and graceful greeting. I saw.
- 4:16Speaker 2: A single small ivory comb was the only thing holding
- 4:18Speaker 2: a massive long gray hair and one neat bundle.
- 4:22Speaker 6: You well excuse me if I do not extend you
- 4:25Speaker 6: the hospitality of my house.
- 4:27Speaker 7: But Pedro he likes to be in, and it's already gone.
- 4:32Speaker 7: There is no wasting time, of.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Course, pitch your son, Senora Hu.
- 4:36Speaker 6: And the good boy, Senor Marlow. Here here is a
- 4:40Speaker 6: photograph of him. It has taken only a week ago,
- 4:42Speaker 6: and it's twenty fifth first. Really, he was so proud
- 4:46Speaker 6: of that green jacket I made for him. It was
- 4:48Speaker 6: swayed and flashing, his head flashing like something that rich
- 4:52Speaker 6: mister Alex Brucher would wear. He has it on every
- 4:56Speaker 6: day since then, even today.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Alex Bruchier, who's that? Missus? And rave Senor on.
- 5:00Speaker 6: The warehouse for first in Los Angeles, number twelve Commercial Stream.
- 5:05Speaker 6: It's where my people worked until two days ago when.
- 5:07Speaker 2: The trouble started. What happened, Senora?
- 5:10Speaker 6: It was during his lunchtime. He was eating from a
- 5:13Speaker 6: meal I made for him, like he always does, and
- 5:15Speaker 6: talking to a stranger some now you say, Senor, man
- 5:21Speaker 6: with no.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Jubble the time made from hobo loafer loafer.
- 5:26Speaker 6: See, he was just telling me how how he was
- 5:30Speaker 6: telling him to find the railroad guards. That, Senor, is
- 5:33Speaker 6: where the trouble began. Oh please, Senor Marlow, you will
- 5:37Speaker 6: have a jair there.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Oh yes, thanks. Now tell me, Senora, there's trouble. Surely
- 5:42Speaker 2: giving instructions to a loafer, as you said, didn't start.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Oh but it did.
- 5:47Speaker 6: After the launch out the foreman ade Senor Corner questioned
- 5:51Speaker 6: Perro about this loafer, and when my boy said that
- 5:54Speaker 6: the man was only asking for the railroad judge, this
- 5:57Speaker 6: senior corner said he was a liar, that Pedro was
- 6:00Speaker 6: giving our information about the shipments.
- 6:01Speaker 7: Are first that he was fired this.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Charge just like that, Senor, after two years of good
- 6:08Speaker 6: hard work. You see, Senor Marlow, Pedro tells me that
- 6:12Speaker 6: when you're Alex Breucher has been having his shipments are
- 6:15Speaker 6: first tolen on the road, hijack, hijack, and it is
- 6:20Speaker 6: this reason why Pedro is fired.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You you want me to prove that, mister Alex Broucher,
- 6:26Speaker 2: that Pe did not even to do with his hijacking.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Huh get his job back? Said no, no, no, no, Singer,
- 6:31Speaker 2: it is too late, too late.
- 6:33Speaker 6: Pedro already went down to this morning to do that.
- 6:36Speaker 6: He went and told Senor kind of deformed, that he
- 6:38Speaker 6: had nothing to do with the hijacked. And more, he
- 6:42Speaker 6: told him, Senor Marlow, that he was fired because of
- 6:44Speaker 6: Helen Castile, the pretty girl who for a short time
- 6:47Speaker 6: now works in saying you Breucher's office.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Well, then I don't understand Senor.
- 6:52Speaker 6: This Helen Castile and my boy are falling in love.
- 6:55Speaker 6: But sen your Broocher also likes this girl.
- 6:59Speaker 2: What happened when Peter told us, mister Broocher, he never.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Did before he even got to speak to Senior Broocher,
- 7:05Speaker 6: that devilment's in your counner and some other men beat him,
- 7:09Speaker 6: got his face, blood on his arms, his clothing torn.
- 7:14Speaker 7: He came home just before I called to you, almost dancing.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Oh I'm sorry. Well how about now?
- 7:24Speaker 7: No, Pedro has gone back revenge in his heart.
- 7:29Speaker 6: That is why you must stop him, Senor, Senor, you
- 7:34Speaker 6: must bring him home before he kills before.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Don't worry. I'm sure I can bring him back positive.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Can I kept money? Nineteen? Maybe more dollars here you.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Take no, no, not yet, missus, and I have. I
- 7:58Speaker 2: don't think it will cost that much. Will see goodbye, singer.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It was an hour's drive to the Broocher fu Company
- 8:13Speaker 2: warehouse on Commercial Street in downtown La. I started up
- 8:17Speaker 2: along cementa ramp that led to a glass cage in
- 8:19Speaker 2: a far corner of the warehouse, marked office. It was
- 8:22Speaker 2: just about the end of a working day, and when
- 8:25Speaker 2: I was next to the door, let it enter. A
- 8:27Speaker 2: bell someplace said at the end of the arrived you
- 8:31Speaker 2: could tell the way everyone's spirits went up, everyone except
- 8:34Speaker 2: the girl inside, half leaning out of file cabinet. I
- 8:37Speaker 2: figured she was helen casteve until I got closer. The
- 8:41Speaker 2: on fire red hair and green eyes with hat and
- 8:43Speaker 2: shoes to match could have gotten by, but the kachi
- 8:46Speaker 2: wall was mink. So was the attitude that would never
- 8:50Speaker 2: take shorthand for forty bucks a week. Things just couldn't
- 8:53Speaker 2: get that up.
- 8:54Speaker 7: Hello, you look like you love something.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Oh is Helen still here? Helen Castile?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Her nose?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Maybe back before you leave for the day. May not?
- 9:03Speaker 7: I don't know you're a friend of her.
- 9:05Speaker 2: No, Peter and never heard of him?
- 9:07Speaker 5: Goodlye sure.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Now tell me missus Haynes, Corey Haynes. You Marlow, Philip Marlow.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Miss Haynes is Alex Brucier around home?
- 9:18Speaker 7: Packing is going out of town? It does every other week,
- 9:20Speaker 7: important business.
- 9:22Speaker 2: No, I just wanted to chat with him a while.
- 9:23Speaker 7: Oh, Connor is Alison's car gast and ready for me?
- 9:28Speaker 5: Yeah, it's ready, It's ready, Miss Haynes.
- 9:32Speaker 8: Here is the key. Thank you?
- 9:34Speaker 2: And Connor?
- 9:35Speaker 7: Please stop wishing I would dead?
- 9:37Speaker 5: Will you?
- 9:37Speaker 7: I can feel it and it gives me the creeps.
- 9:39Speaker 4: I'm so sorry, Miss Haynes, but well maybe we won't
- 9:43Speaker 4: be seeing so much. You want another so soon?
- 9:45Speaker 7: If you mean Helen Castile Connor, She's a great secretary period.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Yeah sure, now you mister mister Marlow.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I'm a friend of Peter Androvis. I want to said
- 9:55Speaker 2: enough mister, almost too much. Wait a minute, Connor for
- 9:58Speaker 2: a lot of hot air.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Listen, Malo. We've been running all kinds of trouble around here,
- 10:02Speaker 4: hijacking short shipments, misdirected cargoes of works. So so it
- 10:06Speaker 4: all airs up to somebody on the inside helping somebody
- 10:09Speaker 4: on the.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Outside, and that ain't good. I take my advice, brother.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Get your long nose out of this place and keep
- 10:14Speaker 4: it out if you don't want advent.
- 10:15Speaker 6: It's the phone, Connor, if you lift it up, it'll
- 10:17Speaker 6: stop that noise.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Very reef punn.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Hello, oh hello, mister Butcher.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay, I got a charming fella, isn't he
- 10:31Speaker 2: You be down here in a couple of hours and
- 10:32Speaker 2: I'm theer.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Wait check.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Jack, mister Butcher.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Goodbye, his master's voice.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Very funny again. You'd better let me have the keys back,
- 10:42Speaker 4: miss Hayes. The boss isn't going out of town after all.
- 10:44Speaker 4: They'll probably want.
- 10:45Speaker 2: His car, and I'll probably give it to him myself
- 10:48Speaker 2: after I've run a few errands I have in mind.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Goodbye, mister Morlow.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I hope we meet again.
- 10:54Speaker 5: In more tests surround me.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You too good to rival schools. Connor, get out of here.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Marlow, get up before you get the same trip. And
- 11:01Speaker 4: your friend Pete and Radig got.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Oh, You've got to be kidding. You wouldn't do that
- 11:04Speaker 2: to me. Conna, I'm not in love with Helen Casteele.
- 11:08Speaker 2: That goes for you too, in spades.
- 11:19Speaker 7: Heys over here behind the crates. I don't want Connor
- 11:24Speaker 7: to see us. I'm Helen Castille.
- 11:26Speaker 2: You know who I am.
- 11:27Speaker 7: There's an intercompound in the office you just left.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I see what you mean.
- 11:30Speaker 7: I knew pet was in some trouble. I hadn't heard
- 11:32Speaker 7: from him in two days. Mister Marlo. What I've done
- 11:35Speaker 7: to him is terrible. How do you know about it?
- 11:37Speaker 7: The Pete company?
- 11:38Speaker 2: No, his mother hired me. I'm a private detective, which
- 11:41Speaker 2: Helen brings up a sharp point. Are you sure you're
- 11:43Speaker 2: not playing both sides? Baby? You save it? That's all
- 11:47Speaker 2: I want to know.
- 11:48Speaker 7: What do you want?
- 11:50Speaker 2: You mean?
- 11:50Speaker 7: You just said that to see how it act well.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I had to be sure, after all, you're still working
- 11:54Speaker 2: for Alex Broocher.
- 11:55Speaker 7: Not anymore. I only stayed down before this because I
- 11:57Speaker 7: didn't want Pete to be fired.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Hold it and they was a good company.
- 12:02Speaker 7: It could be rated.
- 12:03Speaker 2: There's somewhere wrong yeah with him without brass knocks. Now listen, honey,
- 12:06Speaker 2: for everybody's good. I don't want Pete mixing with Alex Broocher.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Before you get out of here, tell me fast. Where
- 12:11Speaker 2: does the boss lives? Forty one West? Okay? Now go,
- 12:14Speaker 2: I'll cover you into your clear of the place going.
- 12:16Speaker 7: My car's across the street. If you need any help later,
- 12:19Speaker 7: mis get going.
- 12:19Speaker 2: That rat may have friends, okay, by mister Morlon. Ellen
- 12:30Speaker 2: got to the front gate, out, into a car, and
- 12:31Speaker 2: away without anybody bothering him, and a couple of minutes
- 12:34Speaker 2: later I covered the same smooth costs, and I was
- 12:36Speaker 2: beginning to believe that the rats were just that, except
- 12:39Speaker 2: that when I was in behind the wheel of my
- 12:40Speaker 2: coop and heading for Adam's Boulevard, I picked up a
- 12:43Speaker 2: pair of headlights in my rear view mirror, which for
- 12:45Speaker 2: the next forty minutes off zig zag stuck like they
- 12:47Speaker 2: were painted there. But finally a traffic jam gave me
- 12:50Speaker 2: all the break I needed, and a sharp right turn
- 12:53Speaker 2: followed by a lot of speed left me free and
- 12:55Speaker 2: once again on my way to West Adams Boulevard. The
- 13:05Speaker 2: place was turned of the century stone block mansion, but
- 13:08Speaker 2: the rest of the neighborhood had gone slumming a long
- 13:10Speaker 2: time ago. I was about to try the knock out
- 13:12Speaker 2: when I noticed a thin slice of pail like said,
- 13:16Speaker 2: the front door wasn't closed all the way. I started
- 13:19Speaker 2: in and and she told the sick light that came
- 13:21Speaker 2: from a single lamp in what used to be called
- 13:22Speaker 2: the library. And then suddenly I saw him, a man
- 13:27Speaker 2: in a smoking jacket, lavishly monogrammed a b his face
- 13:30Speaker 2: beaten raw, his clothing almost shredded, blood clotted thick on
- 13:33Speaker 2: the back of his head. He was dead. In the
- 13:35Speaker 2: corner of the room. Next to the body was a
- 13:38Speaker 2: heavy marble lamp based also bloody. Inches from that, I
- 13:41Speaker 2: found something that might as well have been Pete Andrave's
- 13:44Speaker 2: calling card, the button made of green Swede I had
- 13:47Speaker 2: in my pocket just before the company spoke up.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I'll go for your gun, mollow, that'll leave us.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Even so, the kid finally made it. Maybe maybe I
- 13:58Speaker 2: did it. Kind of nuts. You just came in.
- 13:59Speaker 4: I no, I was waiting outside, jerk.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I had on your trailer lusty figured.
- 14:05Speaker 4: I'd better leave the office, but quick, I figured right,
- 14:09Speaker 4: tell me Marlo, just so I score one hundred percent.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Once your wrangled and drave kid's mother, a private detective,
- 14:15Speaker 2: was working for us. She was afraid of this. Oh no,
- 14:17Speaker 2: stop the sentiment's killing. I wish something would let's call
- 14:22Speaker 2: the police.
- 14:24Speaker 4: What do you mean, I've already got the rest of
- 14:26Speaker 4: my figuring dot But now the kids should beat his
- 14:30Speaker 4: girlfriend Helen's flat. I know where it is, and that's
- 14:33Speaker 4: where I'm going, You see, marlow I want to be
- 14:36Speaker 4: a hero. I want to bring the kid in understand.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Oh shure shu, real easy. You want to bring him
- 14:42Speaker 2: in dead? That way, Nobody even mentions the beating you
- 14:44Speaker 2: gave him on Bruch's orders because he wouldn't stay away
- 14:48Speaker 2: from Helen. That way, you're clean, exactly clean as a whistle,
- 14:53Speaker 2: except for you in your big mouth stands till people.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I want to whisper something your ear.
- 15:15Speaker 3: In just a moment, the second act of Philip Marlowe.
- 15:17Speaker 3: But first, you're going to think the laughter of April
- 15:20Speaker 3: Fool's Day came late when you listened to CBS this
- 15:22Speaker 3: Wednesday night, or it's going to be one of the craziest, merriest,
- 15:25Speaker 3: maddest Knights of entertainment you've ever heard. Bing Crosby will
- 15:29Speaker 3: be playing host to Arthur Godfrey and Perry Como, and
- 15:33Speaker 3: even though lots of singing his promised from all three,
- 15:35Speaker 3: who knows what's going to happen when the gags start flying.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Groucho Marx and Burns and Allen will also be on
- 15:41Speaker 3: hand with their famous fun shows this Wednesday. These great
- 15:45Speaker 3: stars will be here on most of these same CBS stations.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Burns and Ellen, Groucho Marx and Arthur Godfrey, and Perry
- 15:52Speaker 3: Como as Bing Crosby's guests. Now with our star Gerald Moore,
- 15:57Speaker 3: we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and
- 15:59Speaker 3: Tonight Story. The man on the roof.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I kind of started, told me with a thirty eight
- 16:14Speaker 2: wrapped in his stick fist. I figured I better do
- 16:16Speaker 2: something about him, Gonna do it fast. I waited until
- 16:18Speaker 2: he walked around Bruce's body on the floor and it
- 16:20Speaker 2: was out of his line of vision. Then I pointed
- 16:21Speaker 2: at it. How of look, look he's moving a second.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Let's throw your gun out of the conversation. Let's not
- 16:28Speaker 2: Oh but come on, get up my hands. Don't get
- 16:31Speaker 2: him off your crumm look heavy. I'm gonna get nance
- 16:34Speaker 2: rightdy you one way or another. Make it easy on yourself.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Now get up, I said, get.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Up, all right?
- 16:40Speaker 2: What you wear? The shot? That's better? Where do you
- 16:44Speaker 2: want to know Elen Casteele's address? She's got a room
- 16:49Speaker 2: before shot so long muscles. I knew there wasn't much
- 17:02Speaker 2: more I could do for a desperate hot head named
- 17:04Speaker 2: Pete Andrade. They'd already done too much for himself in
- 17:07Speaker 2: the wrong direction. I drove down at him until I
- 17:09Speaker 2: cool off and have to call the police. And I
- 17:12Speaker 2: stopped at a phone booth and gave homicide a fast
- 17:14Speaker 2: rundown on Alex Brooch's murder. But I hung up before
- 17:16Speaker 2: they could ask me Senora Androde's address in San Fernando
- 17:19Speaker 2: or Helen Castile's place on Crenshaw, because there were two
- 17:22Speaker 2: women I wanted to talk to alone before the police
- 17:25Speaker 2: moved in. After that, I drove out to Crunchshaw and
- 17:27Speaker 2: found the number thirty two hundred room falls at the
- 17:31Speaker 2: far end of a half lit hall, and there were
- 17:33Speaker 2: voices inside. One was Helen's, the other was Pete ANDRADI
- 17:38Speaker 2: I reached for my gun I went out.
- 17:40Speaker 7: Of my head.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Helen. I must have hit him Nan or penton hard.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:45Speaker 5: I've got a think.
- 17:46Speaker 2: It's a little late for thinking. Pete. Who are you.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I'm working for your mother. I was until I left
- 17:52Speaker 2: Bruch's place. He's dead, Pete, Pete, No, I didn't mean
- 17:58Speaker 2: to kill him, but I'm not sorry. I want you
- 18:00Speaker 2: to come along with me. Pete. Quietly turn yourself in. No,
- 18:06Speaker 2: get away from me. Stop it a little. He's gone.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Don't don't I'll shoot You're crazy fools.
- 18:15Speaker 7: You wouldn't shoot me, Mala.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Next time you'll be surprised.
- 18:18Speaker 7: It won't be a next time. We're gonna get away.
- 18:20Speaker 2: He's only chance now, and we've got a chance to
- 18:22Speaker 2: be a run be dogged every minute of your short lives.
- 18:25Speaker 2: You'll wind up full of bullets in the dock. You'll
- 18:27Speaker 2: be running down a blind alley and it starts right
- 18:28Speaker 2: there with that door. The obay sucks up.
- 18:31Speaker 5: We're going to try it, Mala, and we'll make it.
- 18:34Speaker 7: You've got to have money, Pete, Yeah.
- 18:36Speaker 5: And I don't know where to get it to. Roucher
- 18:38Speaker 5: always kept plenty of petty cash in the office of
- 18:39Speaker 5: the warehouse I'll take that.
- 18:41Speaker 2: What about the watchman, Pete, you're gonna keep on killing?
- 18:43Speaker 7: Listen, you can get in quietly with Roucher's keys, Corey
- 18:46Speaker 7: Haynes hans them. The office keys are in the same
- 18:47Speaker 7: ring as the car keys. She always borrows them when
- 18:49Speaker 7: she uses his car, and she's got it tonight.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I'll get them. Where does she live?
- 18:53Speaker 7: An Orange drive?
- 18:54Speaker 2: Ten? I think you listen to me a minute. You're
- 18:56Speaker 2: heading for the original data end, both of you. Why
- 18:58Speaker 2: don't you give yourselves a break?
- 19:00Speaker 7: What do you call it?
- 19:00Speaker 9: Break?
- 19:00Speaker 7: Marlow? Pete running in some prison? You will both too
- 19:03Speaker 7: old to care. I'd rather have a bullet.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Let's get him out of here that post, du go
- 19:09Speaker 5: on my low inside move sure?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Sure, what are you waiting for?
- 19:15Speaker 5: Go on?
- 19:15Speaker 2: Close it.
- 19:18Speaker 5: I know what you tried to do for my mother,
- 19:19Speaker 5: Marlow and for Helen and me. I'm sorry it couldn't
- 19:23Speaker 5: work out.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Thanks anyway, Nuts, I'm believe in Kelen.
- 19:29Speaker 7: I'm ready.
- 19:29Speaker 5: You're not coming. You're staying here.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Marlow was right.
- 19:32Speaker 5: This is a blind delly at bad ends, and I
- 19:33Speaker 5: won't take you in.
- 19:34Speaker 7: No, Pete, I'm going with you.
- 19:36Speaker 9: Stay back, I mean, please, Ellen, Helen unlocked this door
- 19:46Speaker 9: till maybe you're gonna stop him.
- 19:47Speaker 7: I'm playing it my way now, Marlow, you can stay
- 19:49Speaker 7: where you are.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Helen, don't understand him on your side.
- 19:52Speaker 7: I'm going with him, whether he wants me or not.
- 19:55Speaker 2: No long, Marlow, Happy Landings Baby. The lock on the
- 20:09Speaker 2: closet door gave up before I did, but only because
- 20:12Speaker 2: it was holder by several years. I got out of
- 20:14Speaker 2: the house and kept ahead of the speed limit all
- 20:15Speaker 2: the way to Orang's drive and figured for what it
- 20:17Speaker 2: was worth it I cut Pete's lead down. It was scant.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Ten minutes. I popped in front of a spot nut
- 20:21Speaker 2: coffee shop on a corner and walked down to two ten.
- 20:24Speaker 2: By the time I got within knocking distance of Corey
- 20:26Speaker 2: Haynes's front door, I could see that the only light
- 20:29Speaker 2: in the place was spilling out of the sunken double
- 20:31Speaker 2: garage that housed a new gray Nash. But when I
- 20:33Speaker 2: moved closer, and I knew that ten minutes was all
- 20:35Speaker 2: that Pete and Arlia needed. Corey was sprawled out on
- 20:39Speaker 2: the grease spaid concrete floor and very steel, very still,
- 20:43Speaker 2: and standing limply against the wall was Helen Castile, staring
- 20:46Speaker 2: down at the red head with a pair of hopeless
- 20:48Speaker 2: eyes that seemed already half dead. So I walked down
- 20:52Speaker 2: the ram. She heard me and looked up.
- 20:54Speaker 7: I knew you to get here.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I don't care now, both ladies.
- 21:00Speaker 7: Yeah, and didn't seeing he was already gone when I
- 21:03Speaker 7: got here on her like that.
- 21:06Speaker 2: He must have gotten the keys, yes, from her purse
- 21:09Speaker 2: over there? Why didn't you follow him? You knew where
- 21:13Speaker 2: he was heading, couldn't when I saw her?
- 21:16Speaker 7: That couldn't.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think she's dead too, No, No, she isn't dead.
- 21:23Speaker 2: She's just out, yeah, a long way out, but not dead.
- 21:28Speaker 2: The looks of things, she must have put up quite
- 21:30Speaker 2: a scrap. Maybe she wait a minute, there's something screwelly here.
- 21:37Speaker 8: It's Corey.
- 21:39Speaker 2: O you Cory's made?
- 21:41Speaker 7: What's happened to her?
- 21:42Speaker 2: She's unconscious? This is terrible.
- 21:44Speaker 7: She knew there was going to be trouble. I supear
- 21:46Speaker 7: she didn't miss Corey.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Honestly, how do you know that? Because she was working.
- 21:49Speaker 7: She told me four or five times she was going
- 21:51Speaker 7: to stay in all evening, like she was expecting somebody.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Ore sure things all the way. Look look here, are
- 21:56Speaker 2: you sure this is her purse?
- 21:58Speaker 7: Certainly?
- 21:59Speaker 2: Was she wrong, not exactly, but oh yeah, yeah, this
- 22:02Speaker 2: clinches it. I look, call an ambulance right away, get
- 22:05Speaker 2: Corey into a hospital and hurry. Helen, you stay here
- 22:07Speaker 2: with her. I don't leave, understand. I'll see you. And
- 22:18Speaker 2: that's it, Matthews. That's why I broke a few speed
- 22:20Speaker 2: laws getting from Corey's garage down here to the warehouse,
- 22:23Speaker 2: because I had to find Pete and tell him before
- 22:24Speaker 2: it was too late. I'm still not sure you made
- 22:26Speaker 2: it my long book. Look this was dropping near Brooch's body.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I just saw them made to it in Cory Hayes's garage.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Look that's not conclusive, no, but these are the papers
- 22:33Speaker 2: I pulled out of a purse. Take a look at him.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Go ahead, one glance will tell you where they came
- 22:37Speaker 2: from and why. You get it, don't you, Lieutenants? Yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 2: I get it, certainly, I get it. What a rotten
- 22:42Speaker 2: set up. You gotta let me go up that prior
- 22:43Speaker 2: escape and talk to him. He'll listen to me, Matthews, I.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Know he will.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I told you once before. Philly's been hit and he's
- 22:49Speaker 3: corner up there.
- 22:49Speaker 2: It's driven him. Hey, wire'll probably bow the top of
- 22:51Speaker 2: your head off, but go ahead, gone up and try it.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I'll pass the word. He's well across the street and
- 23:00Speaker 2: started up the fire escape. I knew Pete Andrade from
- 23:03Speaker 2: someplace in the shadows on the roof was watching me,
- 23:05Speaker 2: heavy against the way, but I climbed up to the
- 23:08Speaker 2: fourth floor before I spotted him his head and stopped
- 23:11Speaker 2: over the ledge, my own thirty eight in his hand.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I went on to the fifth floor. It started up
- 23:19Speaker 2: the ladder to the roof when it came stop there
- 23:22Speaker 2: enough smallow, Pete. I know that's the only reason you've
- 23:27Speaker 2: got this far. You've got lots of nerve Mather, Pete.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I didn't bring a gun because I just came to
- 23:35Speaker 2: ask you a question, nothing else. Question, Yeah, a big one.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Did you use anything on Broucher except your fist? Pete?
- 23:45Speaker 10: Why what's the difference?
- 23:48Speaker 2: I don't think you killed Brocher? What No, no, Pete,
- 23:54Speaker 2: no trick. Look at this. I found this green swede
- 23:58Speaker 2: button there Broocher's body. I thought it came from your jacket,
- 24:01Speaker 2: but it didn't. It was torn from a pair of
- 24:03Speaker 2: green suede shoes that Corey Haynes had on tonight. It
- 24:09Speaker 2: means first she's a liar, that she saw broocher tonight.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It means she got there after you did it, probably
- 24:15Speaker 2: found him unconscious where you had left him, and finished
- 24:17Speaker 2: the job with a heavy marble lamp base. Why would
- 24:23Speaker 2: she kill him? They were going together, they had been
- 24:26Speaker 2: until Brocher got interested in Helen. Yeah. After that, Corey
- 24:30Speaker 2: was on the way out and she knew it. She
- 24:32Speaker 2: decided to get all she could out of him while
- 24:34Speaker 2: she had the chance. Every time she borrowed his car,
- 24:37Speaker 2: she used the keys to get into the office, steal
- 24:40Speaker 2: information out of the files, and sell it. She was
- 24:42Speaker 2: the informer. I'm coming up, Pete. I found some papers
- 24:50Speaker 2: to prove it. Enough purse. She was in a tough
- 24:53Speaker 2: spot when Brucher changed his mind about leaving town tonight.
- 24:56Speaker 2: She had to get the papers back in the files
- 24:57Speaker 2: or Brucher would discover they were missing. But Conna stay
- 25:00Speaker 2: in the office prepended it, so she was trapped when
- 25:02Speaker 2: she saw a chance to kill Brooch and have you
- 25:04Speaker 2: blamed for she grabbed at it? How you convinced kid?
- 25:09Speaker 5: I must shock you, mom? Why did it take such
- 25:13Speaker 5: a risk and climb up here?
- 25:18Speaker 2: Because your mother has some ideas that I wouldn't like
- 25:20Speaker 2: to see her lose piece. What's so I wanted my
- 25:23Speaker 2: gun back? Well do I get it? Yeah, you'll bet here,
- 25:32Speaker 2: And thanks, marm.
- 25:35Speaker 4: I feels so good now.
- 25:38Speaker 5: I guess than you can.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And I just how you feel, kid, And don't climb
- 25:46Speaker 2: fire escapes like this every night, Believe me. It was
- 26:01Speaker 2: a long long time before all the scattered reports were in.
- 26:05Speaker 2: While the doctor in the prison ward it said that
- 26:07Speaker 2: Pete would be okay, and poor Cory Haynes had put
- 26:10Speaker 2: a wobbly signature to a full confession of murder. And
- 26:14Speaker 2: still another hour went by as I drove out across
- 26:17Speaker 2: the wide flat valley to San Fernando, where the profile
- 26:20Speaker 2: of the hills knees had already begun to show against
- 26:23Speaker 2: the gray dawn and rising behind them. When I stopped
- 26:27Speaker 2: in front of the little house and went up to
- 26:30Speaker 2: the door, Senor Andrere was there on the porch. She
- 26:34Speaker 2: waited all night. Her expression didn't change when I told
- 26:39Speaker 2: her all that had happened, didn't change actually until I
- 26:42Speaker 2: was finally ready to leave it. Then she put out
- 26:46Speaker 2: her hand and took my arm. The lines of worry
- 26:50Speaker 2: and her face softened.
- 26:52Speaker 10: Marlo, last night I had but one son. Now this
- 26:58Speaker 10: morning I have too in my heart to all always
- 27:03Speaker 10: heavy home.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I am grateful she was most welcome.

- 31:44Speaker 1: just absolutely grabs your attention. What's the man on the
- 31:47Speaker 1: why is the man on the roof? What's this all about?

- 32:11Speaker 1: Brian says, I now listen to Philip Marlow in my
- 32:15Speaker 1: car during my eighteen mile sixty minute commute, typical for
