- 1:59his own world. And then the man from Scotland Yard, the famous Inspector
- 2:05Peter Black, of the dangerous relentless pursue when man hunts man. In just
- 2:19a moment, Now with Ben Wright start as the famous Inspector Peter Black from
- 2:24Scotland Yard, we bring you tonight's story Pursuit of the Lotness Killer. Sergeant
- 3:08Muffed and I had left King's Cars Station at four o'clock in the morning.
- 3:12It was past eight that evening when we arrived by motor car in the village
- 3:15of Bannock in the north of Scotland. We've been called there by the Chief
- 3:20Constable of Inverness to invest the murder which had taken place two days before.
- 3:23A car had been dynamited on the road and its driver, James Corgey,
- 3:28immediately killed. I left muffat to arrange for rooms at the one and only
- 3:32in and then went to the police station. And I came in I saw
- 3:36two uniformed men playing grass for the death. Ah oh, now, how
- 3:44many times mistake tell you you cannot make that move mcniche. I thought you
- 3:47were in the looking he was, Hey, so I see Diardant Druss,
- 3:53Hey, how do you do I'm Chief Inspector black Cotton Yard. Hey,
- 3:58I think the Chief comfortable? Don you that I was coming? Hey?
- 4:00He did? Yes, I have a fan that you've had a spot of
- 4:04trouble here spot we hell, but he's taking care of Natalie now, thank
- 4:11you. Oh I rang the Chief earlier this afternoon. We've got the man
- 4:15that did the dodgy work. So thank you very much. But you can
- 4:17go back to England. Oh well, good show. Hey is it not
- 4:23Constable magniciall? Thank you to remember your place. Fasten your button. You're
- 4:28on duty. All right. You do not have to fashion deal tied the
- 4:30man comya, but he will I know, Garden sim I don't know if
- 4:34I could have a word with him, not much use. He's not likely
- 4:38to say anything, even if he is a murderer. He's just Scott.
- 4:43Yes. Well, but because I don't doubt that you've got your man.
- 4:46But for my record, you understand, I do have to write a report
- 4:50to the Chief Constable. All right mcniche get the key, you've got it?
- 4:59No, I gave it to you. Oh that's right, so you
- 5:02did? Where did that put it? Ah? Here is the little beastie
- 5:06similarly taken to Windverness in the morning. There's no use going the next besides,
- 5:12and Caro's not behaving. I understand, shouldn't have wake him up.
- 5:17He didn't get more sleep last night. That's his own thought, Garden said,
- 5:23wake up, put on the like mcniche, I, Garden, no,
- 5:29he's gone to us. He's gone that he took the bars out of
- 5:32the window for him. Well, starting to don't mind. I think I'll
- 5:36stay a little while. The village of Bannock is about a quarter of a
- 6:02mile south and west of lock Neet. It's small enough to be visible.
- 6:06I'm very few men, but in common with other villages, it lives,
- 6:11breathed, and contained the pro quota of passions. It remained to be seen
- 6:15where the Banock also contained an escaped murderer. We left Consabo macniche to section
- 6:20question the villagers and then not hit sergeant draws adder toward the lake and the
- 6:26cottage of Gordon Sin. I didn't think he's such a few, but he
- 6:30might have gone home to Maggie Oh as his wife. I how did you
- 6:35find out final note or that he murdered Jim Scroggie. Yeah, Oh,
- 6:40it wasn't difficult. Everyone knew he'd had words with Skorghi. Everyone knew he
- 6:45kept dynamite on the police. But you didn't arrest him immediately after the car
- 6:48was blown up. No, I had any suspicions, but I would not
- 6:51act until I found the proof. Ah, I found it this morning.
- 6:56Sim's dynamite was gone. He wouldn't tell what he'd done with it. His
- 7:00wife didn't know. Then. One of the villagers will remember seeing him skulking
- 7:03about James Scotty's house three days ago. It was at night. Answer,
- 7:09you're resident, What about the car? If you mean that I find traces
- 7:14a dynamite? No, but there wasn't a much left of anything. Eh,
- 7:17right the house you sit back from the road. We'll have to take
- 7:23the path from here. That's the lake through the trees are. If the
- 7:33moon comes through, you can almost see the other side. God'd like to
- 7:38live at the year. Say why Movid? It's toast too late for me.
- 7:43What's there the lockless monster? Sergeant? Now it's a loon, Mavid.
- 7:47And by the way, Rod, what about our old friend the monster?
- 7:51Is he or isn't he? There's some that say they've seen it?
- 7:55Have you? I don't know one side talk. Oh well, you know
- 8:01what shadows can do, Inspector, the only place to live for those who
- 8:09are lonely. It might be a lesson lighting. Then, if you don't
- 8:13mind, Inspector, I'll do the talking for us, all I know,
- 8:16Maggie. Yeah, I thought that I go around the pat and take it
- 8:18in there and try to make a run point again if you want to,
- 8:22surgeant, but you'll find it a wheel bit with the backs of the lake.
- 8:28A good letter shot this place, sir, And that's a you're not
- 8:33a Nathan of about it. I'll ever look at that light, sir?
- 8:35Would you be nasty blacking? Hello, Maggie, but you want John Ross
- 8:45policeman. No, no, Maggie, it's not my fault. You know.
- 8:48Perhaps you comes to rist me now, Nay, it is garden.
- 8:52We want Guardian. You took them away with you your very self. He
- 8:56got out. He's a polishman from London. Keep Inspector Black and Sergeant Market
- 9:07chief constable at Inverness called them up. So you see, Maggie's a serious
- 9:11thing. Nice Muger is a serious thing. If you're seeing part of garden,
- 9:16will you tell me? Nay, I'll have to sess them. Then
- 9:22you'll have to set mind you general, I'm not inviting you. You better
- 9:28stay out here of it. You can't buy post. There was a low
- 9:41peach fire burning in the heart A single oil lamp. Click it on the
- 9:43sideboard, and the woman who was the next work was gone, but not
- 9:48I'm pretty and it's like I remained with her. While Garden brought that to
- 9:52the other rooms. We could hear you're opening moving about a do you know
- 10:00you see? I know? What about the dynamite? I don't know.
- 10:05It wouldn't have been hidden in the lost, would he might be? Why
- 10:09don't you look? I'm going to you're a foolish, foolish woman for a
- 10:13b the law? Where is he? Why should I know that? If
- 10:20you do? Now you can't help in this when I have nothing to say?
- 10:26Would you like a cigarette? Missus him? You'll thank you. I
- 10:30don't really had three cigarette stubs in here. They belong to Rodin. I
- 10:37haven't seen the art, say since this morning, since he was taking I
- 10:41seem would you mind telling me what it was? Your husband and James Squaggy
- 10:46quarreled. Alban Oh A little thing, A very little thing, just a
- 10:50set of all all h I Rodin mentioned the boat two weeks ago when James
- 10:58brought it back. It kept it said, the red room, and that
- 11:03was ang. Mhm, it's no inside the horseman, no, Maggie seem
- 11:09but the last time be a good sensible woman. Has he come here to
- 11:13the neck? I'm not Matt. You are right, Marfa. He was
- 11:28standing just outside with sergeant. Go inside. Maybe you'll be less healthier than
- 11:35you went before. Go inside, Marfat the pace. I the tree over
- 11:41there, Hey, look what on the lake? No, no, it's
- 11:46gone. What did you say? I don't know. It was a shadow,
- 11:52and it was, oh, well blast the shadows. I'm glass your
- 11:54leg. It's not that I'm worried about. We separated, went In said
- 12:00to Mumpy. I looked back to the cottage once as I neared the line
- 12:03of trees, and I saw missus tim I flying against the doorway. My
- 12:07head returned to the lake. Then she was gone. Five minute place I
- 12:11found Muppet lying on the bank a few peep in the lake. I taken
- 12:16the charge and brass, and the sound of the police systore was alien in
- 12:18that wild highland country. Oh can you sit up? Oh? Oh,
- 12:28where did it go to it what I don't know. I mean there was
- 12:35there was something here that you come out of this ship over there, Yes,
- 12:41but there there's nothing that it couldn't The brush is going out of the
- 12:46lake, most of it and not it. Where were you well sare?
- 12:50I was keeping an eye out in and I understand it, legging noise,
- 12:56light and flagging stumping it in the water. I see, and then you
- 13:00came over to investigate. I couldn't see a blessed Mom tells you why hit
- 13:05the window? I was saying that I'm straying the light. Well, the
- 13:09luckless months. I didn't give you that batter on the head, mother,
- 13:11And I don't know what it was. I remember my back. Listen to
- 13:16them bushism when somebody meet me? What's that side of grass? Old man
- 13:24good good? A live samption and what kind of un running questions to day?
- 13:28Right? Something or somebody attacked him. I'll tell you about it on
- 13:33the way back to the village. We're going back. What about sin,
- 13:35I don't know, but we're taking white fem knows something. That's the point.
- 13:39Maggie can be awful obstinate. I say, can you manage now?
- 13:43Mother? Yes, come along, Maggie. So you're really going to lock
- 14:07me up? Genre Nay, but I'm going to ludge you with missus Vuss
- 14:09where we can know where to find you. Man, you try to find
- 14:15yourself, mister Bucky, tell me again, now slowly? No, wait,
- 14:18here's the sergeant. Tell it to him. What's the fashion? Mcniche,
- 14:22mister Bucky, you taught him. I can't make up a world of
- 14:26what you're saying here. Hello, Maggie, Hello, mister Buggy, it's
- 14:30a sergeant. Or are speaking? Slowly? Man? Slowly? Somebody dead?
- 14:41Where? Where? Who is it? In the beginning road? All
- 14:48right, I'll be up in a few minutes. Don't touch anything. Troubles
- 14:52Hey, trouble you hear this? Magicine, there's another murder. Your garden's
- 14:58done. Andrew Stewart this, No, No, it's not true. Didn't
- 15:03he believe a word? But Maggie, I've killed no one. Cousin,
- 15:05sim I think you were in the cell how same way I got out.
- 15:09I came back a few minutes ago. No. I couldn't have very well
- 15:13been in two places at one time, could I? Now? The second
- 15:35act of pursuit of the lock Nest killer Gordon sim was a tall man of
- 15:48about forty five, with a long and friendly face. He didn't look like
- 15:52the sort of man would commit murder. But then I did, Doctor Criffin.
- 15:56I'd them in the cell window and it was obvious that he had needed
- 15:58no I'd have to escape. The remaining bars were easily moved in the decomposing
- 16:03cement. Comes up mcniche rode up on his bicycle to the Imma Gary Road
- 16:07on the outskirts of the village. We questioned, Sin, where did you
- 16:11go to garden? H don't you think it's baba useless to go on in
- 16:15this way? You'll have to be held accountable for another murder? You know
- 16:18another? Haven't you done one year? And I didn't expect to in this
- 16:22life? Why did you come back? I respect below there was a wee
- 16:27bit business to attend to. It was attained to I come back. Did
- 16:33you go to your cottage? No? Where did you go? Then?
- 16:37I came back here? You did not go out to the inver Garry Road
- 16:41and murder Andrew Stewart. I have not a king Standrew, nor any man.
- 16:45I'll have to put the handcuffs on your garden if you must, yes
- 16:51to tell Maggie, there's Nathan to say. It will be quite all right.
- 16:56You'll see Monteter was left in damaged to stand god over the prisoner and
- 17:07sageant Grass and I drove to the sea in the latest guy. When we
- 17:11got there, McNeice was standing beside the body, and an elderly farmer carrying
- 17:15an now walking stick with waiting with him. That's the way I've found him,
- 17:19mister Ross. Like side of the road yesterday now a carib sighting.
- 17:25Gee, what were you doing that, mister buggie? If you don't mind
- 17:29my ask, how did you mind? Mister Ross? One of the cows
- 17:32his cowed. I'd walked to the village for some more medication, because on
- 17:36my way back I found the anger. You met no one on the road
- 17:40coming or going, but they want a toll, except, of course,
- 17:41mister McNish on his bike. He's stopping to ask the vaguness in Gold and
- 17:45Simponi. I was on with him. Hey, that's right, learning being
- 17:51taken, do you now, Constable? Hey robbery, he's got a couple
- 17:55of pounds in his puppy. I watch too, Gold, How close are
- 18:00we to the lake? He's just over the rays one hundred yards maybe more.
- 18:04Uh huh? Where did Seord live? Oh? That's his part down
- 18:08the road. You can see the lights through the trees there. Yes,
- 18:14as he live alone except for a man who comes to help with the work.
- 18:17But he's up at Invergarry. But to get married. I see.
- 18:21Look, I think we better move the body to the village. There's not
- 18:23much more we can do tonight. Come on, let's get out of this
- 18:26wind. The next morning, mapit and I dammined the remains of the car,
- 18:37which had been taken to the local galad. It was an old Morris
- 18:40Curley owned for twenty three years by the lake. James Coggie, I'm part
- 18:45in the extra whiles here? How did the set? She edition didn't have
- 18:48a self start as there? We can dismiss that. Ah Hello, what's
- 18:55they say? It looks like bits as spring? Now where did they go
- 19:00underneath? I'd say sick? Yeah? All right, yeah. A dynamite
- 19:07must have been passing down the here, but it couldn't go off it unless
- 19:11we got pus could it? Chip? No? Wait a minute, love
- 19:17at hand me that Stana? Will you get it here? You are?
- 19:22Thank you? Ah? Oh so that's it? Yeah, that's been it
- 19:32before, very neat watch it, Hughes is run back in the exhaust.
- 19:37Manifold here won't ignite unless the car is running. But he got to give
- 19:41me quite away before he blew up. Oh he could. But if a
- 19:45spark touched that fusee and sooner or later it had to Ah. Yes,
- 19:51somebody knew quite a lot about the operation of the car to work with that,
- 19:53and we've got to find that harm mechanically minded. Gordon Simmy, he
- 20:02wasn't true. He had dynamitic his cuddage, but he had never driven a
- 20:04car in his life, and as far as we could learn, had no
- 20:07knowledge of their operation. Yet untirely circumstantial evidence the prisoner was guilty of both
- 20:12crimes. I astarte to prous to let me interview the wife again, A
- 20:17learn what is the use of this? Do you want to see your husband
- 20:22hang so he won't if he is not guilty? He want he isn't.
- 20:29Will you tell me why he had dynamite? Deli, I'll tell you nothing
- 20:33too. And this is sam You realize that once he's taken in the nets
- 20:37and formerly charged, he'll either tell the truth. I can't. I can't
- 20:41why I promised God then I can't help you. Please. It was at
- 20:52the law. That's why against the law. Godman wanted to build a duck
- 20:56for the boat instead of on the shore. He was going to use the
- 21:00nicely? Why did he didn't want to go through all the trouble of licences
- 21:06and waiting for commission? And that's all? Yes, m hm. Did
- 21:11anyone else know James Gorby? That nobody knew? With me? Not acting
- 21:18with James was about your luck, truly it was. She wouldn't have killed
- 21:22James of anyone. Do you know who did kill him and killed andrews Juan?
- 21:30Missus Sim, no, I don't. Your husband would tell us,
- 21:37Oh, somebody stole that dynamite from your cottage, and you know who it
- 21:44is, don't you? I did, Oh, all right, missus all.
- 21:59I spent the next two days and Danak Sargeant Brass together. We questioned
- 22:03the villagers and investigated the background that the persons involved. I went to the
- 22:07lake where Margaret had been attacked, and when a small boat was found hidden
- 22:11in some rushes near the Intergarry road, I was fairly sure that we had
- 22:14our answers. Missus sim was brought back to the police station, sitting down
- 22:18my key. No, susim, just start at the beginning. During the
- 22:26war, you were employed at a factory in Inverness Way you know. Yes,
- 22:30at that time you met a man who later moved here to Bannaker.
- 22:34His name was James corgy Y. Yes, your husband was fighting in North
- 22:41Africa at the time. Yes, you didn't tell your husband about this when
- 22:47he returned house. She I didn't. I love Gordon, Yes, but
- 23:00he did find out. Goana, that's all oh niche bring in the prisoner.
- 23:08I no, no, I can't know to ve No, Muggie,
- 23:11I'm sorry, may what have you told him? She has told us about
- 23:19James Coggy mister Simon, then I did. It was nothing to do with
- 23:26her. No, that's not true. The factory and Inverness was a Murtor
- 23:30assembly works, was it not. Yes. When the war was over,
- 23:37j Is gorgy st was down here. He wanted to take up again.
- 23:45The threatened to tell Gordon I've told them and put it on his car.
- 23:52That's not true, No, Gordon, what's the use of Maggie? Now?
- 23:57Why did you guys have that? Now when you broke out mistice in
- 24:00him to make me promise not to tell. He wanted to take the blame
- 24:07him knew about Jane's Gordy. He found out what I'd done. I'm sorry
- 24:15about your sergeant, but you held me putting the boat in the water.
- 24:19I had to hit him. I didn't want you to know. I mean
- 24:23to see Maggie, you grow up to the other side of the village.
- 24:26I thought it would be safer to come back that way. What happened.
- 24:32I ran into Andrew Stuart on the road as I was walking back. He
- 24:36tried to stop me. Thought I was asleeping. I suppose I had to
- 24:40hit him too. But when Andrew trolling, he broke his head open on
- 24:45a stone. She's a good woman. She was lonely in the war.
- 24:52That's all. I'd have done the same thing as Gordy myself. The only
- 24:59reason I found it was when I was over to get my orlocks back.
- 25:03I saw my gie go in the dynamite. Don't do the cat saw that
- 25:10I'm not going to happen. I'm equally guilty. I knew That's why I
- 25:17was willing to take the plane. It was a strange trial. Neither I
- 25:30had criminal minds. That both had criminal incent. The defense was pathetically simple
- 25:37and possibly in some other countries might have been justified. However, murder had
- 25:44been done and both were conducted pursuit, and the pursuit is ended. Welcome
- 25:56back. Well don't you like a cheery story to start half the week?
- 26:00This is one of those everybody killed somebody and everybody goes to jail for some
- 26:06theme plots that they did on Pursuit from time to time. I thought it
- 26:10was actually pretty good. The accents did seem a little bit off, but
- 26:17I don't know that maybe because I spend too much time listening to British radio
- 26:22and have had some of my expectations for this set a bit high. But
- 26:27at any rate, we will go ahead and turn to some listener comments and
- 26:32feedback, and I have a question here from Rain. Rain says, I
- 26:37really enjoy your podcast and iPhone app. I'd recently gotten back into radio drama
- 26:42about two thousand and eight or nine when I discovered a channel on my satellite
- 26:45radio in a new car that had Golden age radio content and I like the
- 26:51Detective Show's best. Later I found this podcast. But regarding the app on
- 26:55my iPhone, are the podcast searchable for example, is there a way to
- 26:59go directly to episode eight nine nine without twenty minutes of scrolling. Answer to
- 27:06your question is yes, there is. Actually when you open up the app,
- 27:12if you scroll down just a bit right at the top of the list
- 27:19under the episodes, there's a search bar. It's got a magnifying glass on
- 27:23it, so you just tap in the bar and then keyboard should come up,
- 27:32prompting you to go ahead and top in what you'd like to search for
- 27:36Keenan on your phone. The second question for shows available through archive dot org,
- 27:42like Philip Marlow or yours truly Johnny Dollar, you do you have additional
- 27:48episodes that aren't available there. That's a good question for the most part.
- 27:56For series that are available there, for the majority of them, we don't
- 28:00have anything extra add We do have a few episodes of Johnny Dollar we'll be
- 28:10sharing that haven't yet been added to archive dot org, but which I'm fairly
- 28:14sure will be shortly. As I've said before, the vast majority of programs
- 28:18we do here available on archive dot org, and there are a few shows
- 28:23that are on other websites and locations that I've found across the Internet, and
- 28:29a very few that get from some other source, but probably somewhere in the
- 28:34neighborhood of ninety five percent of programs are available on archive dot org, not
- 28:41always necessarily in the same quality, but nevertheless available. The main thing we
- 28:45get here is a commentary plus play through the series in order, particularly when
- 28:55I don't make a mistake on that. All right, well, we're going
- 28:57to go ahead in and discuss, ever so briefly my efforts with Run for
- 29:06Heaven's Gate. If that's not of interest to you, or if you're listening
- 29:11to this after October twenty fourteen when it wouldn't be applicable, and feel free
- 29:17to skip it. But I do want to go ahead and talk about my
- 29:21participation in Run for Heaven's Gate, in which I'll cover fifty two point four
- 29:26miles over the course of four half marathons in five weeks, and also the
- 29:33situation with HIV AIDS orphans in India. There are hundreds of thousands of HIV
- 29:41AIDS orphans in India. Either their parents have died or the children have abandoned.
- 29:45These children face starvation and a future without hope. Send Hope has established
- 29:52orphanages in India where these children who would otherwise be abandoned are given food,
- 29:57clothing, medicine, education, and more importantly, love and hope. The
- 30:03Run for Heaven's Gate program began in Boise at a grassroots level seven years ago
- 30:11to raise funds for these children in India, with walkers and runners doing four
- 30:15half marathons in the fall to raise funds to support these orphans. I heard
- 30:23about it at church and decided that this year I was actually going to do
- 30:27it, and I've been training for it since March. It's been quite an
- 30:30experience. Prior to this year, the longest I'd ever walked or run was
- 30:37five k or three point one miles. Prior to Run for Heaven's Gate,
- 30:45Saturday was my sleep end day. Now I'm getting up early and going to
- 30:51bed early on Friday instead. And through this whole process of going through the
- 30:56training program with the local run walk group, I've been introduced to a whole
- 31:00new world where people take things like goo that's gu to prepare for long runs,
- 31:07and where it really does make sense to pay extra for good shoes because
- 31:12good shoes are cheaper than physical therapists. Well, I hope that this process
- 31:18helps me be more fit. I have to admit that there's no way I
- 31:22could ever undertake this sort of thing except for the fact in India there are
- 31:29children whose futures lay in the balance between life and hope and death and despair,
- 31:34and Run for Heaven's Gate gives me an opportunity to make a difference in
- 31:37their lives. Every four hundred dollars raised will cover all the needs of a
- 31:42child in India for a whole year, and all the funds raised do go
- 31:48to support these orphans. You can make a tax to doctible pledge in any
- 31:53amount to support my walk by going to Heaven's Gate dot Great Detectives dot net,
- 32:00which redirects to my pledge page and has a video about this effort.
- 32:05You can mail in a pledge, but you you do need to email me
- 32:08for instructions on how to do that. This will be the only time I
- 32:12talk about this in detail, but if you do have any additional questions,
- 32:16just feel free to email me and I'll answer you personally. Just send that
- 32:21into box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, and remember to support the Run
- 32:27for Heaven's Gate just go to Heavensgate dot Great Detectives dot net. All right,
- 32:31Well, that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with
- 32:35Pat Novak for Hire and coming up next week another episode of Pursuit again.
