Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What's Within Your Control?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, emilyah Baddie here you are listening to five
- 0:23Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. I'm gonna be honest, I have
- 0:28Speaker 1: had a week and I feel as though it's only
- 0:31Speaker 1: going to get more hectic from here. I had a
- 0:36Speaker 1: pretty trying day on Wednesday, just a lot of balls
- 0:41Speaker 1: in the air, a lot of events coming up, all
- 0:44Speaker 1: of which I'm really really excited about, but admittedly feeling
- 0:47Speaker 1: a little bit overwhelmed by. And I got to this
- 0:52Speaker 1: point in the afternoon on Wednesday where I felt as
- 0:57Speaker 1: though like I couldn't keep my cup from overflowing, and
- 1:00Speaker 1: that I felt obscenely emotional and I just needed to
- 1:05Speaker 1: let go. And in having this moment and letting go,
- 1:12Speaker 1: I came back to this realization that there are certain
- 1:16Speaker 1: things that are within my control when life feels heavy
- 1:20Speaker 1: and when life feels hectic, and one of those things
- 1:24Speaker 1: is my breath. So I allowed myself to have this
- 1:28Speaker 1: difficult moment. I allowed myself to feel overwhelmed and admittedly
- 1:34Speaker 1: a little bit angry and also sad due to things
- 1:38Speaker 1: that were just beyond my control. And then I came
- 1:43Speaker 1: back to my breath and as like I had a
- 1:48Speaker 1: full fledged tears moment I saw there and I came
- 1:52Speaker 1: back to my breath, and I remembered what is within
- 1:56Speaker 1: my control, and that was really empowered, and that was
- 2:00Speaker 1: really beautiful. And it was a moment that I reflect
- 2:04Speaker 1: on sitting here telling you about that. I am proud of.
- 2:08Speaker 2: You.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Know, it's easy to get wrapped up in days and
- 2:11Speaker 1: categorize them as good or bad. But when you slow
- 2:14Speaker 1: down a little bit and you realize that even the
- 2:16Speaker 1: smallest thing can be a victory, even the smallest thing
- 2:19Speaker 1: can be a win, that there is goodness amongst the
- 2:24Speaker 1: tough stuff amidst the bad things. That's awesome. My prompt
- 2:29Speaker 1: for you this week hit me with a small win.
- 2:32Speaker 1: What's going on? What is something that is good in
- 2:35Speaker 1: your life? It can be literally as simple as remembering
- 2:40Speaker 1: to breathe. Bonus points if you share it with me
- 2:43Speaker 1: over on social attagging, at Hurdle podcast and at Emily
- 2:46Speaker 1: a Body Again. What is a small win that you
- 2:49Speaker 1: can take time to celebrate today? And now a listener question.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, this is Anna from Oklahoma. I am running
- 2:59Speaker 2: the New York City Marathon this year. I ran it
- 3:03Speaker 2: in twenty seventeen, so I have some idea of what
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm getting into. But I know you've done it many
- 3:09Speaker 2: times and run around New York many many times. So
- 3:14Speaker 2: could you give us, like for those of us running
- 3:16Speaker 2: or spectating, kind of like a two to three minute overview,
- 3:22Speaker 2: maybe some tactical advice. I remember there's a hill right
- 3:27Speaker 2: before Central Park that was killer. I know the bridges
- 3:30Speaker 2: are notoriously bad, but if you could just kind of, yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: walk us through the marathon, give us some running advice,
- 3:38Speaker 2: cheering advice, that would be great. Thank you and congrats
- 3:42Speaker 2: on London.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Hey Anna, so excited for you. I've run New York
- 3:48Speaker 1: I think five times now, kind of lost rack. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: love this marathon. I love this day in the city.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It is truly so special. So I will quickly highlight
- 3:58Speaker 1: a few things to keep in mind. The first thing
- 4:01Speaker 1: to keep in mind is that you get to the
- 4:04Speaker 1: starting line quite early compared to when you start running.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So with that said, make sure that you show up
- 4:11Speaker 1: there with like some sort of something to sit on,
- 4:14Speaker 1: throw away clothes. You want to keep your body warm,
- 4:17Speaker 1: because you could get there as much as like two
- 4:20Speaker 1: to three hours before you towe the starting line, so
- 4:25Speaker 1: definitely have a game plan for that. The next thing
- 4:28Speaker 1: I will say is make sure not to go out
- 4:29Speaker 1: too hot. Yes, you go up a small hill right
- 4:32Speaker 1: at the beginning when you're going over the Arizona, but
- 4:35Speaker 1: then the Arizono. What comes up must go down, and
- 4:38Speaker 1: it is easy to really dramatically pick up the pace
- 4:41Speaker 1: as you go down the second half. So don't go
- 4:44Speaker 1: out too hot as it goes as it goes when
- 4:48Speaker 1: it comes to the next bit of the race. Running
- 4:51Speaker 1: through Brooklyn is really beautiful in the crowds, and your
- 4:54Speaker 1: goal for this part should be not to really think
- 4:57Speaker 1: too hard, just enjoy yourself. Soak up that long, long
- 5:01Speaker 1: stretch of Fourth Avenue. Wave to me as I will
- 5:05Speaker 1: be cheering for a bit as you round at the
- 5:08Speaker 1: corner in Fort Green heading up Lafayette. And then yes,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I would say there are two larger hills just to
- 5:15Speaker 1: be aware of. The first one is when you are
- 5:18Speaker 1: around mile sixteen going over the Queensborough. That can be challenging.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It's one of the only places on the course where
- 5:25Speaker 1: there isn't a lot of spectators of any at all
- 5:28Speaker 1: because it is a bridge. But know that once you
- 5:31Speaker 1: get over that hurdle and you're coming down off of
- 5:34Speaker 1: the Queensboro and turning the corner and about to head
- 5:37Speaker 1: up First Avenue. When you hit Manhattan, the crowd, the
- 5:42Speaker 1: roar is electric and it is such a fun place
- 5:45Speaker 1: in the race, so keep your eye on the prize there.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And then the last hill that I'll mention is going
- 5:51Speaker 1: up Fifth Avenue before you turn into Central Park, so
- 5:56Speaker 1: you are heading downtown from being up in the Bronx
- 6:00Speaker 1: and Harlem, and it definitely can be a challenging point,
- 6:04Speaker 1: especially because I believe this hits around mile twenty one
- 6:07Speaker 1: in the race. So stay strong, know that you're in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the home stretch. And the last thing I will say
- 6:14Speaker 1: when it comes to cheering or those that are spectating,
- 6:17Speaker 1: is the great thing about this course is it's totally
- 6:20Speaker 1: feasible to see someone three times if you know how
- 6:23Speaker 1: to navigate the subway system. So if you catch someone
- 6:26Speaker 1: near Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, then take the queue or
- 6:30Speaker 1: the four or five up to the upper east side.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You can then catch your runner on First Avenue and
- 6:37Speaker 1: then cross over to Fifth Avenue and see them there
- 6:42Speaker 1: as well. I think I got all of that right,
- 6:44Speaker 1: So know that you can see three times if you
- 6:48Speaker 1: plan accordingly and make sure to let your runner know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: per Robin Arzon's advice in Wednesday's episode, exactly where you're
- 6:55Speaker 1: going to be on Runners left or Runner's right, on
- 6:58Speaker 1: the north side of the street, at the south side
- 6:59Speaker 1: of the stet. Give them as specific of instructions as
- 7:03Speaker 1: possible so that you can see them and they can
- 7:05Speaker 1: see you, and you can have that special moment in
- 7:08Speaker 1: the midst of so much fun and chaos. All right,
- 7:12Speaker 1: good luck to everyone running next week, and I'm so
- 7:15Speaker 1: excited for you. I can't wait to be out there cheering.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Stay tuned, stay tuned, keep track. If you want to
- 7:20Speaker 1: know where I'm going to be, to my Instagram. I'll
- 7:22Speaker 1: make sure to share that when I figure out my logistics.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Best day in the city. That's it for now, another
- 7:28Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
