3:08
Speaker 3: Doctor Robin Broughton and Christopher Vincent for broad Adventures are here.
3:12
Speaker 3: Good morning, Good morning folks, welcome to the show.
3:15
Speaker 6: Good morning, thanks for having us.
3:16
Speaker 3: Thank you for being or first of all, ask the
3:18
Speaker 3: obvious question, what is Broughton Adventures.
3:21
Speaker 7: Well, Broughton Adventures offers a service for people who might
3:24
Speaker 7: be a little nervous about international travel, want to see
3:28
Speaker 7: the world, but just a little anxious about it. So
3:32
Speaker 7: we offer trips, group trips that people can sign up for,
3:37
Speaker 7: all led by experienced guides. These are great for people
3:42
Speaker 7: who maybe they don't have travel buddies and they just
3:45
Speaker 7: want to join a trip.
3:47
Speaker 6: And then we also offer.
3:49
Speaker 7: The ability to choose your own location and we'll plan
3:53
Speaker 7: the trip for you and send an experienced guide with you.
3:57
Speaker 7: We have ten guides who work for us, and that's
3:59
Speaker 7: what we do. We help you see the world.
4:01
Speaker 3: And I'm looking at the places that you can send people.
4:04
Speaker 3: This is not exactly like we're talking about going to
4:06
Speaker 3: Myrtle Beach here. I mean there's anything wrong with Myrtle Beach,
4:08
Speaker 3: but I'm looking at Dubai, Ecuador, Kilimanjaro, different safaris, Norway.
4:16
Speaker 3: I mean, as we say in southern West Virginia, that's
4:18
Speaker 3: a fur piece. Yeah, that's a fur piece.
4:21
Speaker 7: From here, we go all over the world, all over
4:23
Speaker 7: the world, so Middle East, we do a lot of
4:25
Speaker 7: European countries. The African Safari is super popular, and we
4:32
Speaker 7: do it at a good price. Our slogan is big adventures,
4:35
Speaker 7: little cost.
4:37
Speaker 3: So let's talk about the travel adventure business in general.
4:41
Speaker 3: I mean, of course, it, like everything else, suffered with COVID.
4:44
Speaker 3: You know, obviously a couple of years ago. How's the
4:47
Speaker 3: rebound been from that.
4:49
Speaker 7: I think the rebound's really been excellent. I think people,
4:53
Speaker 7: especially after COVID being isolated, have been very excited to
4:58
Speaker 7: get out and travel, and I think that just having
5:02
Speaker 7: an experienced guide with you really helps helps with that.
5:06
Speaker 7: But yeah, we've had We've had a lot of a
5:08
Speaker 7: lot of success with our trips and we are based
5:12
Speaker 7: locally here in Charleston, West Virginia. I began leading trips
5:16
Speaker 7: at West Virginia State University as a professor for twenty
5:19
Speaker 7: five years and now it's it's a full time business.
5:24
Speaker 3: So why, I mean, what was it that about for
5:27
Speaker 3: either one of you? What was it about this business
5:28
Speaker 3: that excited you, that made you want to do this?
5:31
Speaker 7: Well, I I'll let my lead guide Christopher answer that one,
5:35
Speaker 7: since I've been talking so much.
5:37
Speaker 5: Well, that's that's all right.
5:39
Speaker 8: So I've always wanted to travel the world, and I
5:42
Speaker 8: actually never traveled at on. A lot of a lot
5:45
Speaker 8: of people know me as a world traveler, but I
5:46
Speaker 8: didn't travel at all until I lived in West Virginia.
5:49
Speaker 3: You's got a later start, Yeah, I got a.
5:50
Speaker 8: Late start, yeah, and it's it's thanks to Robin that
5:54
Speaker 8: you know had I've seen twenty six countries now, and
6:00
Speaker 8: I just wanted the culture, one of the real experiences
6:03
Speaker 8: of traveling. I didn't I didn't want the We don't
6:06
Speaker 8: do touristy things either. We do some touristy things, but
6:08
Speaker 8: it's a fair mix of tourists and cultural experiences. So
6:11
Speaker 8: we you know, we really try to get the most
6:15
Speaker 8: out of every place that we go.
6:16
Speaker 3: What's been some of the most exciting places, And this
6:19
Speaker 3: is a personal question for either one of you that
6:21
Speaker 3: you've that you've gone, what's been the most exciting thing?
6:24
Speaker 8: Japan is like the closest thing to visiting another planet
6:28
Speaker 8: that you're gonna really Yeah, why is that? It's just
6:31
Speaker 8: everything is just so different. It's like it's like the
6:34
Speaker 8: entire world just went on a different timeline.
6:36
Speaker 3: See that Now that surprises me because I would think
6:40
Speaker 3: that it wouldn't be that different in Japan, because I mean,
6:42
Speaker 3: their their culture seems to be similar to ours. But
6:46
Speaker 3: maybe not. I've learned something here today. I mean I
6:49
Speaker 3: would thought it probably would would would be a lot
6:52
Speaker 3: like America, but I guess not.
6:53
Speaker 8: Uh No, It's it's really interesting that you'll i mean
6:58
Speaker 8: from small things like you know, Shabuja crossing where a
7:01
Speaker 8: thousand people cross the street at the same time and
7:04
Speaker 8: you don't hear a word from anybody.
7:06
Speaker 3: It's just footsteps, you know.
7:08
Speaker 8: I mean, you'll be on the subway with a hundred
7:10
Speaker 8: Japanese businessman and you'll only hear the word of the subway.
7:13
Speaker 7: You know.
7:13
Speaker 8: It's just like it's a very quiet culture and it's there.
7:16
Speaker 3: They're very subdued people. Yeah.
7:18
Speaker 8: Absolutely, And then you want to talk about the technology.
7:21
Speaker 8: I mean, everything's really just everything is just next level
7:24
Speaker 8: over there. They thought about every single tiny little thing,
7:26
Speaker 8: and the and the way that they just walking down
7:29
Speaker 8: the street and you see like a Japanese businessman next
7:32
Speaker 8: to just a regular citizen and like these tattered pickup
7:36
Speaker 8: like safety clothes because they're picking up every little piece
7:40
Speaker 8: of everything on the street. I saw a guy just
7:42
Speaker 8: like working at a piece of chewing gum for like
7:45
Speaker 8: five minutes because he just had to get that gum up.
7:47
Speaker 8: So it's like a very clean New York City, but
7:49
Speaker 8: just like really high tech. It's it's otherworldly.
7:52
Speaker 3: Honestly, I think it says like we need to bring
7:53
Speaker 3: some of those people here on the turnpike.
7:57
Speaker 8: But Safari would be a close. Uh do you want
8:01
Speaker 8: to talk about Safaria?
8:02
Speaker 3: Yeah?
8:02
Speaker 6: Sure, sure, the Safari.
8:04
Speaker 7: I think that's when people ask me the the one trip,
8:07
Speaker 7: if you can only do one, what should you do?
8:09
Speaker 7: And I would definitely say the African Safari. You get
8:13
Speaker 7: to well, first of all, we are we base the
8:17
Speaker 7: trip in Zanzibar, which is an exotic island off the
8:20
Speaker 7: coast of East Africa, and so.
8:24
Speaker 6: You have all the island life.
8:26
Speaker 7: But then one day you get in a plane and
8:29
Speaker 7: you fly to the mainland and you land right in
8:31
Speaker 7: the plains of Africa and you hop in these jeeps
8:35
Speaker 7: and you're just roaming around and you're seeing elephants and giraffes,
8:38
Speaker 7: and we see lions every single time, you know, you
8:43
Speaker 7: see the mass I, the traditional mass I Warriors. It's
8:48
Speaker 7: it's it's the the number one bucket list trip in
8:51
Speaker 7: my opinion.
8:52
Speaker 3: Talking to folks again from Broaden Adventures, but Dave Island
8:54
Speaker 3: showing five eighty live is brought to you a part
8:56
Speaker 3: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds
8:58
Speaker 3: continuing their long road trip. They're not back at the
9:01
Speaker 3: ballpark until one week from Friday. At that time they'll
9:04
Speaker 3: kick off a Labor Day weekends set against Gastonia. For tickets,
9:07
Speaker 3: Birds merchandise promotion schedules more visit dirty Birds baseball dot com.
9:11
Speaker 3: All right, so what do you say to somebody who's
9:13
Speaker 3: listening right and thinking, man, you know, I really want
9:17
Speaker 3: I'd love to do something like this, but they're just
9:20
Speaker 3: a little bit on the scared side, you know, a
9:22
Speaker 3: little bit I was scared. It's not the right word, Robert,
9:24
Speaker 3: I'd say maybe a little bit apprehensive. What would you
9:26
Speaker 3: say to them.
9:27
Speaker 7: Well, I would say, first of all, that's understandable in
9:30
Speaker 7: the climate today, but that's what we work at. Our
9:34
Speaker 7: number one priority is safety for our clients, and we
9:39
Speaker 7: have ten very experienced guides. They've traveled the world. We
9:43
Speaker 7: are all involved in language training, so you'll have a
9:47
Speaker 7: guide with you that speaks to the language, that's been
9:50
Speaker 7: to the country before, that has CBR training and all that,
9:54
Speaker 7: not that you would need it, but that's prepared to
9:56
Speaker 7: deal with emergency situations, all very well versed in getting
10:01
Speaker 7: you through those anxious moments like at airports and going
10:04
Speaker 7: through customs and security.
10:06
Speaker 6: We're right there every step of the way.
10:08
Speaker 3: That's a very good point because for and I'm not
10:11
Speaker 3: somebody who's done a whole lot of travel in my life,
10:13
Speaker 3: but I can tell you one out of the country
10:14
Speaker 3: trip that I took, I was more I was more
10:17
Speaker 3: concerned about the airport and gaging through that then I
10:21
Speaker 3: was when we got to the resort that we were visiting.
10:23
Speaker 3: I was a lot more concerned in the airport because
10:25
Speaker 3: it was a totally different world than when you fly
10:27
Speaker 3: into some of these other countries, you know, And he
10:29
Speaker 3: was talking about the difference between the culture even right
10:33
Speaker 3: down to the airport, and the public transportation is a
10:35
Speaker 3: heck of a lot different in some countries than what
10:37
Speaker 3: it is here.
10:38
Speaker 7: Right exactly exactly, and that's it. There can be high anxiety,
10:41
Speaker 7: but we do everything to relieve that. And yeah, and
10:46
Speaker 7: we've we've just had thousands of positive experiences. And even
10:52
Speaker 7: though we are based in Charleston, we have people traveling
10:55
Speaker 7: with us from all over the country. So we just
10:59
Speaker 7: planned trips for eight people out of Denver, Colorado for
11:03
Speaker 7: upcoming Norway trip.
11:05
Speaker 3: So you take care of everything. I mean, if I
11:07
Speaker 3: pick one of these places and I'll just say I'm
11:10
Speaker 3: gonna I'm gonna go to Killmajaro, you take care of
11:12
Speaker 3: pretty much everything.
11:14
Speaker 7: Yeah, and Kilimanjaro is it's kind of a special trip
11:17
Speaker 7: because of course that involves climbing the highest mountain in
11:21
Speaker 7: Africa almost twenty thousand feet. So we also have experienced
11:25
Speaker 7: guides who have summitted the mountain, who provide the clients
11:30
Speaker 7: with training plans.
11:31
Speaker 3: Okay, I was gonna say, because that's not something you
11:33
Speaker 3: just show up and go out. I can climb that mountains.
11:36
Speaker 3: It's a no matter how good a shape you may
11:38
Speaker 3: be in, you may not be ready for that. So
11:40
Speaker 3: talk about that training aspect.
11:42
Speaker 7: Right, Yeah, So the training is for that, that's very important.
11:46
Speaker 7: And for those who are going locally, we organize hikes,
11:49
Speaker 7: We get pep you know, we get people ready for
11:52
Speaker 7: the trip, make sure that they have everything they need.
11:54
Speaker 7: That's all important, all the supplies and trucking gear and such.
11:59
Speaker 6: But for all the trips we.
12:02
Speaker 7: Uh, we tell people all they really need to do
12:04
Speaker 7: is show up at the airport with their passport, okay,
12:07
Speaker 7: and we provide a packet that tells them everything from
12:11
Speaker 7: the time change to how currency will be converted, what
12:15
Speaker 7: electric converter they'll need to use in that country.
12:19
Speaker 6: We give them some language tips, and.
12:21
Speaker 3: I would think you would also This kind of goes
12:23
Speaker 3: back to Christopher, to what you were saying. I think
12:24
Speaker 3: you would also want to give them some tips about
12:26
Speaker 3: the culture too, because you can go to another country
12:29
Speaker 3: or deal with people from other countries and you can
12:31
Speaker 3: greatly offend them without actually meaning to. And so with
12:34
Speaker 3: every country you go to, there are certain protocols that
12:36
Speaker 3: we may not know what I'm making.
12:37
Speaker 8: Sure, Yeah, especially like Middle Eastern culture and everything, there's this,
12:40
Speaker 8: you know, it's everything operates very differently. But to your
12:44
Speaker 8: earlier points. When you go to the website, you'll see
12:46
Speaker 8: a price there and that's going to include the airfare,
12:49
Speaker 8: the lodging, different curated experiences and.
12:56
Speaker 3: Uh and uh.
12:58
Speaker 8: And it is getting way way more intoimidating like international travel,
13:02
Speaker 8: like I'm even a feeling, you know, and you're getting
13:05
Speaker 8: herded like through airports. Now, you know, it's just a
13:08
Speaker 8: it's a really intimidating process.
13:10
Speaker 3: So you guys are going to make it easier on
13:12
Speaker 3: them though.
13:12
Speaker 8: Yeah, we yeah, we we try to and at least
13:15
Speaker 8: we you know, kind of act as a shield sometimes,
13:19
Speaker 8: whatever it takes.
13:20
Speaker 3: Give us the website again where people can learn more
13:22
Speaker 3: because it's fascinating. I appreciate you guys coming in, but
13:24
Speaker 3: it's all It all starts, I'm imagining by going to
13:26
Speaker 3: your website. So sure, and now you can see what
13:28
Speaker 3: you get there. What do you got?
13:29
Speaker 7: It's Broughtonadventures dot com. So that's brought and br oug
13:34
Speaker 7: h t o nadventures dot com.

18:09
Speaker 3: That's what I will embrace it for that one day

18:43

20:19
Speaker 3: and Whimpy's, the states premier sports publication and the executive
20:22
Speaker 3: director of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Before we
20:25
Speaker 3: get to some stuff that I want to talk to
20:27
Speaker 3: you about, we had some good news out of Morgantown yesterday.
20:31
Speaker 3: Some players have been reinstated and it looks like they're
20:34
Speaker 3: going to be playing one one. There was an academic issue,
20:37
Speaker 3: but that notwithstanding, it looks like the players that were
20:40
Speaker 3: in question are going to be playing this fall.
20:41
Speaker 14: Talk about them, Yeah, I think it's a big news
20:44
Speaker 14: because you know, they had hoped that they would be eligible.
20:47
Speaker 14: They hoped that maybe half of them would be eligible.
20:51
Speaker 14: I need more details because, you know, just because there's
20:54
Speaker 14: an injunction.
20:56
Speaker 4: I don't know.
20:56
Speaker 14: Is that gonna last the season? I don't know, but uh,
21:00
Speaker 14: if it does, I mean, uh, you know, good for them.
21:04
Speaker 14: I mean depth at the Division one level, especially first
21:08
Speaker 14: year coach rebuilding a roster, that's big.
21:11
Speaker 3: News, all right. And uh, speaking of rebuilding Marshall rosters,
21:15
Speaker 3: my Marshall thundering heard, I mean they got they got probably.
21:19
Speaker 3: I saw a stat the other day that as far
21:21
Speaker 3: as new players coming in, they got one. They're one
21:23
Speaker 3: of the schools that has like the highest number of
21:26
Speaker 3: new players. I mean, w U has got a lot
21:27
Speaker 3: coming in. Marshall's really got a lot coming in there.
21:30
Speaker 3: Uh do you want to mention that tonight we're gonna
21:32
Speaker 3: paint the Capital City green up at the bill No
21:35
Speaker 3: Flight School at the airport. Marshall University completely sold out.
21:39
Speaker 3: It's not a seat available.
21:41
Speaker 15: Man.
21:42
Speaker 3: I'm going to be serving as the MC of that
21:43
Speaker 3: event tonight. I'm looking forward to it. Coach Gibson's going
21:46
Speaker 3: to be there. Other coaches, coach Jackson, coach Fulkes, new
21:49
Speaker 3: athletic director Gerald Harrison's going to be there. Marshall President
21:52
Speaker 3: Brad Smith, Mayor good One is going to give the
21:54
Speaker 3: opening address. So it's it's going to be a great
21:56
Speaker 3: night up at the of the bill, no flight school
21:59
Speaker 3: to night as we pay the Capital City Green. And
22:01
Speaker 3: I'm happy to say it's completely sold out.
22:03
Speaker 4: I've been to that event.
22:04
Speaker 14: I mean, for if you're a Marshall fan, that's one
22:07
Speaker 14: thing of the year. If it's not a game itself,
22:10
Speaker 14: you have to be there.
22:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, if you got your ticket, definitely you got your
22:14
Speaker 3: ticket because it's completely sold out. What about our young
22:16
Speaker 3: man from Shepherd University, Man, that's awesome. He of course
22:23
Speaker 3: out of Shepherd, played at Martinsburg High School, got undrafted,
22:29
Speaker 3: went to the Chicago Bears, got some playing time, got
22:31
Speaker 3: some starts, did really well. Now he just signed a
22:34
Speaker 3: contract yesterday, Jim. He is going to be one of
22:37
Speaker 3: the league's highest paid quarterbacks. I think this was like
22:40
Speaker 3: a seven million dollar deal or something like that. Two years,
22:43
Speaker 3: ten million or ten million, okay million, yes, to be
22:45
Speaker 3: a backup quarterback and I'm not downplaying that because he
22:48
Speaker 3: got playing time, it did pretty well. But what a
22:51
Speaker 3: great story. I mean, everybody nationwide is talking about this
22:54
Speaker 3: kid out of Martinsburg who played college ball at Sheppard.
22:57
Speaker 3: Not ety five percent of the sports fans I've never
22:59
Speaker 3: even heard of Shepherd outside the stay to West Virginia,
23:02
Speaker 3: and it's it's the He's the toast of ESPN and
23:05
Speaker 3: everywhere now.
23:05
Speaker 14: Sports fans love underdog stories and he's he's it. He's
23:08
Speaker 14: a good kid, it seems like. And I mean, if
23:11
Speaker 14: you watch the press conference, if you haven't seen it,
23:13
Speaker 14: go back and look it up, because it's a very
23:16
Speaker 14: emotional for him. He comes from Martinsburg, played for the
23:20
Speaker 14: Bulldogs up there, and you know, as you said, went
23:24
Speaker 14: to Shepherd, he stayed there, he didn't transfer out and
23:28
Speaker 14: finished a great college career. And good for him, Tyson Badge.
23:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's certainly, I mean, a success story. And
23:35
Speaker 3: if you, as Jim said, if you heard the press conference,
23:38
Speaker 3: he got a little teary eyed he was talking about
23:40
Speaker 3: he said, I think, and I'm kind of paraphrasing here, Jim,
23:42
Speaker 3: he said something to the effect of nobody around me
23:45
Speaker 3: had money. Yeah, And he said my dad didn't have
23:48
Speaker 3: running water until he was His dad's an interesting story
23:52
Speaker 3: in his own right because he was like a world
23:53
Speaker 3: arm wrestling champion or something. But his dad didn't have
23:56
Speaker 3: running water until later in his life. And this kid
23:58
Speaker 3: is is getting paid and it's a great story for
24:01
Speaker 3: West Virginia. It really is, it really is. You have
24:04
Speaker 3: got some big news from Wally and Whimpies.
24:06
Speaker 14: Yeah, I do. We've always transitioned. I mean, it's a
24:09
Speaker 14: thirty five year publication. It started in print only, it
24:14
Speaker 14: was only during football season. I took it over in
24:16
Speaker 14: twenty eighteen and took it year round as a print
24:19
Speaker 14: and digital. Now we're transitioning even more. Beginning next week,
24:24
Speaker 14: we're going to be a daily digital product and we'll
24:28
Speaker 14: still do a weekly digital magazine as well. So it's
24:34
Speaker 14: an exciting time for Walies and Whimpies. If you want
24:37
Speaker 14: to sign up to get that daily, you go to
24:39
Speaker 14: Wallywimpyesports dot com and you'll find out how to do.
24:42
Speaker 4: It right there.
24:44
Speaker 3: So you're gonna have enough content for daily.
24:46
Speaker 16: I said that.
24:47
Speaker 3: I said that tongue in cheek, but go ahead.
24:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
24:50
Speaker 2: You know.
24:52
Speaker 14: Everybody like print, but print is confining, you know, you
24:57
Speaker 14: only have so much space. You can only print X
25:00
Speaker 14: number of pages when you put it out there. But digital,
25:02
Speaker 14: I mean there's no limits.
25:04
Speaker 3: I mean you can put that also edit digital to
25:07
Speaker 3: to a certain extent, at least more so than you
25:10
Speaker 3: can print. You know, once it's out there and it's
25:12
Speaker 3: on your local convenience store shelf, that's it. You know,
25:15
Speaker 3: that's it. But online you do have the ability to
25:18
Speaker 3: a certain extent anyway to be able to go in
25:21
Speaker 3: and go, okay, well we need to change this or whatever.
25:23
Speaker 14: Which which I did yesterday with some scheduling, you know.
25:26
Speaker 14: So the best example, I would say is with our
25:29
Speaker 14: print product. Up to even last year, we were not
25:32
Speaker 14: able to get the score of the Sunday night NFL
25:36
Speaker 14: game or the Monday night game, and you would get
25:39
Speaker 14: that a week later. Actually, because we update that NFL
25:43
Speaker 14: page now we can get everything in there. The standings
25:47
Speaker 14: are correct. It's just a much more efficient way to
25:50
Speaker 14: get the information out there.
25:52
Speaker 3: Jim Wrkman again of Wally and Wimpey's, and I failed
25:54
Speaker 3: last time we had you on the show. As you
25:56
Speaker 3: were getting ready to leave, I said, oh, by the way,
25:57
Speaker 3: he's the executive director of the West Virginia Sports Writers
26:00
Speaker 3: Association as well, So I want to make sure we
26:01
Speaker 3: get that in there. But Dave Island Show on five

26:10
Speaker 3: you most looking forward to about the upcoming football season?
26:14
Speaker 14: You know, it's always exciting, but you know, new coaches
26:16
Speaker 14: in Huntington and Morgantown. I mean, that's what this state
26:21
Speaker 14: thrives on, is college football. I mean again, opening week,
26:27
Speaker 14: Robert Morris is in Morgantown. They should be able to
26:31
Speaker 14: take care of that game, we would hope, But you
26:35
Speaker 14: know that second week in Ohio at Ohio the third week, Pitt, let.
26:39
Speaker 3: Me go back a little bit. Yeah, when the WVU
26:41
Speaker 3: schedule was finalized, I had you on the show and
26:47
Speaker 3: you called it. Then you said, and you went on record,
26:51
Speaker 3: it's saying that's going to be a difficult game for
26:53
Speaker 3: the Mountaineers when they go into Athens.
26:55
Speaker 4: Yeah.
26:55
Speaker 3: I think it is because their experience and you had
26:57
Speaker 3: that as a loss for the Mountaineers.
26:59
Speaker 14: I don't think I predicted a loss yet. I'm just
27:02
Speaker 14: I just that's their best opportunity to get upset.
27:07
Speaker 3: Okay, okay, I be not fair enough, fair enough, fair enough.
27:10
Speaker 14: They've got an experienced quarterback, They've got a lot of
27:12
Speaker 14: guys back, which is the opposite of Morgantown.
27:15
Speaker 3: So well, and later today on Metro News, meddam, I'm
27:18
Speaker 3: going to have Rob Cornelius, who was one of the guys.
27:20
Speaker 3: In addition to being a political guy, he's also in
27:24
Speaker 3: the booth for the broadcast, so he's already calling it
27:27
Speaker 3: that it's in ohighway, that's.
27:29
Speaker 14: What he should do, though he can probably make a
27:31
Speaker 14: better case than I did.
27:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and that's why he would not be
27:33
Speaker 3: doing his job if he didn't. We had a question
27:36
Speaker 3: here for you, okay, it's said with rich Rod and
27:38
Speaker 3: Pat Holme the first game in a couple of weeks
27:41
Speaker 3: and Pitt not selling tickets Lol. Is the vibe regarding
27:45
Speaker 3: mounthin or football starting to feel like it did twenty
27:47
Speaker 3: years ago? I hope. So that's a question for you,
27:49
Speaker 3: mister Worden.
27:49
Speaker 14: Well, that's what people want. They want that vibe of
27:52
Speaker 14: twenty years ago. So I think that's why they hired
27:55
Speaker 14: rich Rodd and he's had success. I mean, I think
27:58
Speaker 14: you know, enough time had passed that it's you know,
28:04
Speaker 14: he's going to be welcomed much more than he would
28:07
Speaker 14: have five to ten years ago.
28:09
Speaker 4: So I think the timing is right.
28:12
Speaker 14: They want that vibe back because they just didn't have
28:14
Speaker 14: it in Neil Brown. Sorry, yeah, but I think it's
28:18
Speaker 14: going to help recruiting. I mean, it's all about recruiting.
28:21
Speaker 14: It's all about excitement in your fan base. And you
28:24
Speaker 14: get both with rich Rod, I believe.
28:26
Speaker 3: And rich Rod's made some noise in the first couple
28:28
Speaker 3: of weeks by you know, calling some of his players soft.
28:31
Speaker 3: And he's done that on more than one I mean
28:33
Speaker 3: one time you just said, okay, just lost his school,
28:35
Speaker 3: but he's done on more than one occasion. Now he's
28:36
Speaker 3: a master motivator, and that's what master motivators do. I
28:40
Speaker 3: mean you think about you know, I think about somebody
28:41
Speaker 3: like Mike Didko, for example, who is a master who
28:44
Speaker 3: is a master motivator, is going to get in your
28:45
Speaker 3: face and tell you that you're you know, every everything
28:49
Speaker 3: you don't want to be. You don't know how much
28:51
Speaker 3: of that is he's just trying to motivate the guys
28:52
Speaker 3: or how much he how much he truly believes, and
28:55
Speaker 3: we forget.
28:56
Speaker 2: You know.
28:57
Speaker 3: Somebody pointed out, they said, well, he's been away for
28:59
Speaker 3: a while. It's not like he's been on a couch
29:01
Speaker 3: watching Wheel of Fortune, you know. Ever since he left Morgantown,
29:03
Speaker 3: he's been Jacksonville, State, Michigan, air's on all these different places.
29:07
Speaker 3: So he's been out there.
29:08
Speaker 14: Imagine a time in college football that it would make
29:13
Speaker 14: headlines if a coach called his players soft. I mean,
29:16
Speaker 14: that was every day, fifteen thousand times in the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties,
29:23
Speaker 14: and all of a sudden, twenty twenty five, Rich Rudd
29:26
Speaker 14: calls my kid soft. I may look to transfer.
29:29
Speaker 3: Hell I had I had, I had math teachers that
29:31
Speaker 3: called us soft, you know, right, But that's a that's
29:33
Speaker 3: a difference in the generations, That's right, And it's and
29:36
Speaker 3: I think again, I'm going to go back to the
29:39
Speaker 3: motivational aspect. Whether you like rich Rod or you don't
29:42
Speaker 3: like Rich Rudd, one thing about it. He is a
29:43
Speaker 3: fiery guy, playing with your hairs on fire, you know,
29:46
Speaker 3: the whole deal. And and and that's been missing in
29:50
Speaker 3: Morgantown many people. I mean, and I'll say this about
29:54
Speaker 3: about my alma mater. I mean, Huff could be a
29:56
Speaker 3: fiery guy too. I'm interested to see what happens there
30:02
Speaker 3: because you know, Tony Gibson is a West Virginia guy.
30:05
Speaker 3: He actually wants to be here. I don't know about
30:08
Speaker 3: some of the other coaches that we've had that maybe
30:10
Speaker 3: didn't well, we know coach Huck didn't want to be here.
30:12
Speaker 3: I'm not going to get off on that tangent, but
30:15
Speaker 3: you know, Tony Gibson wants to be there. Corney Jackson,
30:18
Speaker 3: the basketball coach, wants to be there. Kind of like
30:20
Speaker 3: that vibe going on in Huntington as well. And we'll
30:23
Speaker 3: stick the football right now. But I am still I'm
30:27
Speaker 3: concerned about the upcoming Marshall season. I'll be honest with you,
30:29
Speaker 3: just because there's just so many questions right now. They
30:31
Speaker 3: may totally prove me wrong. I hope they do. I
30:34
Speaker 3: hope the Mountaineers have a great season as well. There's
30:36
Speaker 3: a lot of questions with both programs.
30:38
Speaker 14: Yeah, it's really going to take a month into the
30:40
Speaker 14: season to really see what kind of programmer, what kind
30:44
Speaker 14: of season each of the teams is going to have.
30:46
Speaker 14: The Thundering Herd and the Mountaineers.
30:48
Speaker 3: What are you looking at as far as high school goes.
30:50
Speaker 14: Oh, man, I'm so excited about it. It starts a
30:54
Speaker 14: week from tonight tonight.
30:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll have We've got a game on Metro News
30:57
Speaker 3: TV as a matter of fact, so we're looking forward
30:59
Speaker 3: to them.
31:00
Speaker 4: Yep.
31:00
Speaker 14: So there's four games I believe statewide on Thursday, a
31:04
Speaker 14: whole slate of games on Friday night, and one on
31:07
Speaker 14: Saturday next week, I believe week one. I mean one
31:11
Speaker 14: thing I will say locally, I think it's going to
31:13
Speaker 14: be more competitive because in the past several years, the
31:18
Speaker 14: four A schools, even before there were four classifications, the
31:22
Speaker 14: larger Triple A schools really dominated the Triple A schools,
31:26
Speaker 14: the current Triple A schools. So I think those Triple
31:29
Speaker 14: A schools now in the valley are going to be
31:31
Speaker 14: much more competitive because they can schedule differently, and they've
31:35
Speaker 14: got some Double A teams that moved up to Triple
31:38
Speaker 14: A and it's just more competitive here in the valley.
31:41
Speaker 3: And a little programming note for US. West Virginia State
31:45
Speaker 3: football is back on one O seven three The Beat.
31:47
Speaker 3: We are going to be covering West Virginia State football
31:50
Speaker 3: on one of seven three The Beat we are going
31:51
Speaker 3: to have our course, our Friday night football coverages we
31:53
Speaker 3: always do. We will be well, we're going actually going
31:57
Speaker 3: back to the Game of the Week format and then
31:59
Speaker 3: we'll have Herbert Hoover on ninety six one KWS. It's
32:03
Speaker 3: been a big, big thing for us the last couple
32:05
Speaker 3: of years, so we're excited about being part of the Huskies,
32:07
Speaker 3: and then all the other teams will will be on
32:09
Speaker 3: WCHS as well. Texas. Ask him what he thinks about
32:13
Speaker 3: nil in high school.
32:16
Speaker 14: I don't think it's going to be a big deal.
32:18
Speaker 14: I think they had to have something on the books
32:20
Speaker 14: to manage that. But you know, in my lifetime, I've
32:24
Speaker 14: seen a couple of athletes that would warrant some pretty
32:29
Speaker 14: good NIL money, one being Randy Moss. Maybe another would
32:32
Speaker 14: be Brett Nelson from Saint Albans Jr.
32:34
Speaker 3: House Jr. House.
32:36
Speaker 14: There's been a handful in several decades. So I don't
32:40
Speaker 14: think that it's a big deal right now. But they
32:43
Speaker 14: had to have something on the books.
32:44
Speaker 3: Forty four.
32:45
Speaker 14: I believe other states have something on their rule books, and.
32:48
Speaker 3: The rules are as the best I understand it, and
32:50
Speaker 3: you can correct me. I mean they if I'm if
32:52
Speaker 3: I'm a player for and I'll just use GW for example,
32:56
Speaker 3: I cannot appear in the GW merchandise. Is that right?
32:59
Speaker 3: And a logo?
33:00
Speaker 4: You know what? It's so restrictive.
33:01
Speaker 14: That's the one other reason why I don't think it's
33:04
Speaker 14: going to be, uh, you know, much of anything to
33:06
Speaker 14: worry about, because you can't even have a football in
33:09
Speaker 14: your hand. If you're a football player, you can't be
33:12
Speaker 14: in the GW gear. You can't have you can't represent
33:18
Speaker 14: anything that references back to what you do that has
33:21
Speaker 14: made you famous in sports. It just has to be
33:24
Speaker 14: your name, your image, or your likeness, not the schools,
33:28
Speaker 14: not the sports.
33:28
Speaker 3: All right, I got one more question here for you,
33:30
Speaker 3: and you're a popular guy today. If WVU and Pitt
33:34
Speaker 3: do go three and oh, do you think ESPN will
33:37
Speaker 3: consider McAfee suggestion of Game Day coming to Morgantown for
33:40
Speaker 3: the brawl? Two and oh? I'm sorry they correct themselves
33:42
Speaker 3: in two and oh.
33:43
Speaker 14: Yeah, I think, uh, bat McAfee's got a lot of influence. Yeah,
33:48
Speaker 14: I think that's not outside the realm of possibilities.
33:51
Speaker 3: We'll see what happens. All right, you got a big
33:52
Speaker 3: event tonight. I want to let you go.
33:53
Speaker 14: Yeah, if you weren't able to get your ticket to
33:55
Speaker 14: the Marshall event, and or you're a WVU fan, you
33:58
Speaker 14: should be at Buffalo Wild Wings, Cross Slain's tonight, Wally's
34:01
Speaker 14: and Whimpy's Night. We have Anthony Lewis Touchdown City's going
34:05
Speaker 14: to be there. He's gonna bring Avon Coburn, who's the
34:08
Speaker 14: Mountaineers all time leading rusher. He's going to be a
34:10
Speaker 14: special guest at Wally's and Whimpyes Night. And we have
34:13
Speaker 14: some tickets we're going to give away. We have Marshall
34:16
Speaker 14: tickets to their home opener and we're going to give
34:19
Speaker 14: away a pair of WVU pit tickets tonight. All you
34:23
Speaker 14: have to do is come and sign up.
34:25
Speaker 3: Start in its six.
34:26
Speaker 14: It starts at six and at seven point thirty. We'll
34:28
Speaker 14: probably draw at about seven seven fifteen.
34:31
Speaker 3: All right, Jim, appreciate it, and we'll be reading the

37:29
Speaker 3: here when we did opening. Day, yeah.
37:31
Speaker 22: Definitely That uh feels great, Though, YEAH i like. It listen, Clean.
37:35
Speaker 3: Yes well not that the. Leader the other one was.
37:38
Speaker 3: Dirty oh, yeah it was all. Right there we go
37:40
Speaker 3: back in thirty. Years it was. Retro it was. Retro all,
37:44
Speaker 3: right let's talk about. Numbers either one of you could
37:45
Speaker 3: just jump. In let's talk about. Numbers last, year how
37:47
Speaker 3: many people came through the turnstiles And i'm just a,
37:50
Speaker 3: ballpark no pun.
37:51
Speaker 22: Intended, YEAH i like, that that's. All i'm going to
37:53
Speaker 22: hit it out of the park. Again, Yeah, okay it was.
37:55
Speaker 22: Over it was over one hundred and twenty thousand people,
37:57
Speaker 22: total AND i mean within that as.
37:59
Speaker 16: Well.
38:00
Speaker 22: Well it's pretty cool seeing the crazy amount of places
38:03
Speaker 22: that people came. From you, know we've talked about that
38:06
Speaker 22: every city In West. Virginia we've talked about nearly every single,
38:09
Speaker 22: state multiple. Countries when we were with the group from
38:13
Speaker 22: it was a fifty person plus group.
38:15
Speaker 3: From, japan that's.
38:16
Speaker 22: Right when they were walking, AROUND i mean it was
38:18
Speaker 22: they were in. Awe that was the coolest thing because
38:21
Speaker 22: it was A monday night walking around with a huge
38:24
Speaker 22: group from From japan visiting our, community visiting late the,
38:28
Speaker 22: night and it was. AWESOME i, mean seventy five percent
38:31
Speaker 22: time about how amazing light the night, was twenty five
38:34
Speaker 22: percent about Sho Heo. Tani, yeah it's, understandable understand, too
38:39
Speaker 22: or the two things we could talk.
38:40
Speaker 2: ABOUT i guess there you.
38:41
Speaker 3: Go and And, ben you, know your law firm was
38:44
Speaker 3: was all over this stuff from day, one as you
38:46
Speaker 3: are on various other things in the community as.
38:48
Speaker 23: Well what'd you get out of. It, well you, know
38:50
Speaker 23: SO i told this there that at the at the press.
38:53
Speaker 23: Conference we get as a business, OWNER i get pitched
38:55
Speaker 23: on sponsorships and you know things all the, time and
38:59
Speaker 23: this is the only one where somebody pitched. Me AND
39:01
Speaker 23: i called the next day to, say, now remember you
39:04
Speaker 23: promised me. This you promised, me SO i knew it
39:08
Speaker 23: was going to be a. Hit you, know this is
39:10
Speaker 23: something That, charleston That West virginia. Needed and When andy
39:14
Speaker 23: came up and he was kind of telling me what
39:16
Speaker 23: the layout would look like with the ice skating, rink
39:19
Speaker 23: AND i, SAID i am one hundred percent on.
39:21
Speaker 3: Board you call me.
39:22
Speaker 23: Tomorrow and THEN i ended up calling him BECAUSE i
39:25
Speaker 23: wanted to make sure that we were. Involved And i'm
39:28
Speaker 23: in on this until he won't let me be in.
39:30
Speaker 23: Anymore i'm telling you BECAUSE i love. IT i love
39:32
Speaker 23: going over there and watching people when they come.
39:35
Speaker 3: Through how many times on average were you and the family?
39:38
Speaker 3: There probably this?
39:38
Speaker 23: YEAR i was there probably fifteen. Times, yeah and not
39:41
Speaker 23: just walking around LIKE i will stand there and just
39:43
Speaker 23: watch people when they come in or talk to. PEOPLE
39:46
Speaker 23: i was there when the all the businessmen From japan came,
39:49
Speaker 23: in you know that was part of a big economic
39:51
Speaker 23: development through the state Of West. Virginia we had dinner
39:55
Speaker 23: At university At charleston and then we brought him over
39:58
Speaker 23: To light The night and they hadn't seen anything like that.
40:01
Speaker 23: Before they were just completely blown. Away but it's something
40:04
Speaker 23: that's so so big and so different than anything else
40:10
Speaker 23: around here that's. Offered we have to include it in
40:14
Speaker 23: like economic development, plans or even if you've got family coming,
40:17
Speaker 23: in you, know people that haven't been here for a
40:19
Speaker 23: few years and that come back For thanksgiving Or, christmas
40:22
Speaker 23: make sure that they go to the.
40:23
Speaker 3: PARK i, mean AND i talked To Tim brady about
40:26
Speaker 3: this last year and talked to me a good one
40:27
Speaker 3: about this as. WELL i, mean this is it's almost
40:30
Speaker 3: Like charleston has become A christmas destination. Now you, know
40:33
Speaker 3: you think About charleston being a summertime destination With regatta
40:36
Speaker 3: and all the other fairs and festivals we, Have but
40:37
Speaker 3: NOW i mean Between Hally Jolly, brawley, yes and Between
40:41
Speaker 3: light The night and everything else that goes on to the.
40:44
Speaker 3: CITY i, mean this has become like A christmas destination.
40:46
Speaker 23: NOW i was walking Down Capitol street the other day
40:48
Speaker 23: and a lady stopped me and she was, like, OH
40:50
Speaker 23: i forget your, name but you're The christmas lights. Guy
40:54
Speaker 23: AND i, Said i'll take. That i've been called so much.
40:57
Speaker 23: Worse i'll Take Christmas lights as an attorney. Especially but
41:00
Speaker 23: that's another story.
41:01
Speaker 3: Time but and again going back TO i always look
41:05
Speaker 3: at economic. Numbers i'm a numbers guy when it comes
41:09
Speaker 3: to money and what it means for the city Of.
41:12
Speaker 3: Charles so because people that come in nine times out of,
41:15
Speaker 3: ten they don't just go to light to. Night they
41:18
Speaker 3: go downtown and they, shop they go to a, restaurant
41:21
Speaker 3: they have, dinner they take in all this other. Thing
41:23
Speaker 3: so it's not just about going to looking at some shiny.
41:26
Speaker 22: Lights well, Absolutely AND i mean with with, that you
41:30
Speaker 22: know you talk about how The jolly probably late the,
41:32
Speaker 22: night capital market, events everything that goes on in the.
41:34
Speaker 22: Community they're all pretty affordable and very accessible and pretty
41:40
Speaker 22: within distance of each. Other SO i think, that you,
41:43
Speaker 22: know when you're looking at the numbers and looking at
41:44
Speaker 22: the economic, IMPACT i think that those kind of anchor
41:48
Speaker 22: events and anchor locations really allow a lot of kind
41:52
Speaker 22: of flexibility for when people do come and. Visit when you,
41:55
Speaker 22: Know ben mentioned it but my in laws have come
41:59
Speaker 22: from to see my brother in, law sister in law
42:01
Speaker 22: and nieces have come the last Two, thanksgivings AND i
42:04
Speaker 22: mean it is an a one part of our visit
42:07
Speaker 22: to go late the night of course every single, night
42:09
Speaker 22: but you, know and then seeing all of the million
42:12
Speaker 22: other things that are going on and going To Holly
42:14
Speaker 22: Jolly brawley and having fun down there with my now
42:17
Speaker 22: seven year old son and. BROTHER i, mean there are
42:18
Speaker 22: just so many traditions and it's really really easy to.
42:21
Speaker 23: Do all, right what's new for this? YEAR i think
42:24
Speaker 23: we're gonna have more. Life we're going to have some different.
42:26
Speaker 23: Rides some of the more popular things will still be,
42:28
Speaker 23: there BUT i think it's going to be maybe configured
42:31
Speaker 23: a little.
42:31
Speaker 3: Differently. Yeah, actually you guys put out a map on
42:34
Speaker 3: THE i think The Dirty birds did. THAT i shared
42:35
Speaker 3: that over on my social. Media so if you want
42:37
Speaker 3: to go see what we're talking, about go To Dave
42:39
Speaker 3: Allen radio and you can see exactly the little map
42:43
Speaker 3: that that you guess put on Your facebook.
42:44
Speaker 22: Page, ANDY i, know do you think WE'RE i don't
42:46
Speaker 22: know if we're having too much of where the font
42:48
Speaker 22: keeps getting smaller because there's so much cool stuff going
42:51
Speaker 22: on that you got to kind of really zoom it.
42:52
Speaker 22: In but, well so another, thing you, know talking about
42:55
Speaker 22: the numbers and economic, IMPACT i, mean it was really
42:57
Speaker 22: really important for us to make this as Much West
43:00
Speaker 22: virginia is humanly. Possible and you, Know i'll ADMIT i
43:03
Speaker 22: didn't realize until we did some research and really started
43:06
Speaker 22: doubling down on that commitment that there is an ice
43:08
Speaker 22: skating rink company right here In West. Virginia SO i,
43:11
Speaker 22: mean the rink is going to be, bigger, better and
43:13
Speaker 22: straight From West virginia With West Virginia cruise installing. It
43:17
Speaker 22: and that goes the same thing for.
43:19
Speaker 3: All of our.
43:19
Speaker 22: Lights so there's really a lot of things that we're
43:22
Speaker 22: kind of you know now that going into year. Three
43:25
Speaker 22: it's so cool how much you learn and so cool
43:27
Speaker 22: how much you. Know it really consumes the planning period
43:30
Speaker 22: where you, know, baseball it's a baseball, stadium but, man
43:33
Speaker 22: we're talking about light the night three hundred and sixty
43:34
Speaker 22: five days a, year all, Right and opening night Is
43:37
Speaker 22: opening night Is november twenty, first all. Right tickets are
43:40
Speaker 22: on sale now and tickets are available at Dirty birds
43:43
Speaker 22: baseball dot com and Light thenight dot com get.
43:46
Speaker 3: Your tickets in Advanced. Guys we appreciate you being. HERE
43:48
Speaker 3: i appreciate. It thanks a. Lot it's nine to. Fifty
43:50
Speaker 3: we're gonna go To. Morgantown we got a radio thon
43:53
Speaker 3: going on FOR Wvu Medicine children's and we're going to
43:56
Speaker 3: go live to the hospital when we come back on
43:58
