- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up on NHL Unscripted, Porter Mortone, Hey, Porter, unbelievable
- 0:26Speaker 1: at the World Championships. Right now, I'm going to talk
- 0:27Speaker 1: without him, play with Sidney Crosby. More ms about Monona Rayome. Yeah,
- 0:31Speaker 1: she's back in the news and sin City snouth. What
- 0:34Speaker 1: a sin City snub? What is John Torrella doing? Pissing
- 0:38Speaker 1: the media off? Never good idea, especially because he was
- 0:40Speaker 1: just working for the.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Media and the ESPN.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I could have Nate Thompson back in the fold. Here
- 0:44Speaker 1: it's me and JD. Raider Rock. We had a Final
- 0:46Speaker 1: four baby, ready to go and tal you can lead
- 0:49Speaker 1: us in this native former hab JD from Montreal. Oh
- 0:52Speaker 1: lay oh oh, Final four Baby. The Conference final is
- 1:07Speaker 1: set Avalanche and Golden Knights and the Hurricanes and the
- 1:10Speaker 1: Montreal Canadians. Colorado took two or three in the season
- 1:13Speaker 1: series against Vegas, although the Golden Knights won the last
- 1:16Speaker 1: meeting three to two in overtime on April eleventh. Colorado
- 1:18Speaker 1: hasn't played in a week while Mitch Marner leads all
- 1:21Speaker 1: playoff scores. We'll get to the habs and the Hurricanes
- 1:24Speaker 1: in just a second. Jad. The general feeling is that
- 1:26Speaker 1: the Avalanche are gonna romp. They've been unbelievable all seasons.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Start to finish though, the best team in hockey Vegas.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You know they're not gonna be able to go down
- 1:34Speaker 1: without a fight. But it's gonna be h not a
- 1:36Speaker 1: pair of mats.
- 1:37Speaker 2: What do you got.
- 1:42Speaker 1: This?
- 1:43Speaker 3: This is your music for the ass all the night.
- 1:50Speaker 3: This song has just been going viral with the Canadians.
- 1:53Speaker 3: They keep posting it and people absolutely love it every
- 1:55Speaker 3: time they win. This is kids singing a French shot
- 1:58Speaker 3: of people. What was the question I was looking for?
- 2:02Speaker 3: It was all good Vegas. It's all good. I can see.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Are we going Vegas Golden Knights?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Dala's gonna run a Vegas Golden Knights first, no
- 2:08Speaker 1: HAPs bias. Yeah, it feels like the Avalanche of the
- 2:11Speaker 1: prohibitive favorites. Obviously, some people are saying that it's not
- 2:13Speaker 1: gonna be a fair fight. Can the Golden Knights win this?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Quite frankly, yeah, I think so.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I listen.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I think everybody's overlooking Vegas and I have Colorado to
- 2:23Speaker 3: win it all. I think they look incredible, but Cale
- 2:26Speaker 3: mccarr not practicing that little injury at the end of
- 2:29Speaker 3: round two did not look good. Looked like he's been
- 2:32Speaker 3: playing with something. I mean, hasn't skated in three four days.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And then he's going to go and if he plays,
- 2:38Speaker 3: how effective is he going to be? Because you know
- 2:40Speaker 3: we were talking before. You know, typically when if it's
- 2:43Speaker 3: a shoulder or wrist or something, you can skate. You know,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you can skate and stay in shape, and then they
- 2:49Speaker 3: can shoot you up with with some kind of nerve blockers.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You can play, but you're not skating at all, So
- 2:54Speaker 3: that that leads you to believe it's it's either mid section,
- 2:57Speaker 3: hip or something. But it just all looks awkward. And
- 3:01Speaker 3: I mean, they've done well without him this season. He
- 3:03Speaker 3: missed him and they have a winning record, So I'm
- 3:06Speaker 3: not worried because they're so deep, but it just leads
- 3:10Speaker 3: me to believe that that's a big missing piece for
- 3:14Speaker 3: Colorado and Vegas is if you look at the first
- 3:17Speaker 3: two rounds, they they played teams that are similar to
- 3:20Speaker 3: the Colorado Avanage Utah very fast. You look at Anaheim,
- 3:24Speaker 3: very fast, high powered, and they kind of they really
- 3:28Speaker 3: they really slowed him down. And if not for Carter
- 3:31Speaker 3: Hart kind of finding his way in Round one against Utah.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I mean, Vegas kind of walks all over them. But
- 3:37Speaker 3: you know Carter Hart was finding his game. Now against Anaheim,
- 3:40Speaker 3: he looked stout. So to me, I'm like, this is
- 3:43Speaker 3: not a clear cut series in Colorado gives up chances
- 3:47Speaker 3: and Weggie's been great for them Wedgwood, But I don't know.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think I think I wouldn't be surprised if Vegas
- 3:53Speaker 3: comes in and maybe shocks some game one and takes
- 3:56Speaker 3: Game one and then we're and then Colorado kind of
- 3:59Speaker 3: resettles himself.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But I think they can take game one.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think this is going to be a long series.
- 4:05Speaker 4: And to your point, Gud, I agree. I mean I
- 4:08Speaker 4: look at you know, with mccarr, his situation stone obviously,
- 4:12Speaker 4: but I just think that the way mccarr can control
- 4:15Speaker 4: a hockey game and not having him and that that
- 4:19Speaker 4: takes that away from Colorado if he's not playing. And
- 4:22Speaker 4: you said it, I mean I look at now with
- 4:25Speaker 4: Vegas and now with William Carlson in their lineup and
- 4:28Speaker 4: having him as that second line center, like it you
- 4:31Speaker 4: look at their centers and it's Keel Carlson, Hurdle and
- 4:34Speaker 4: Doubt like those are really good for centers.
- 4:36Speaker 2: When you say center depth is the same exactly.
- 4:40Speaker 4: It matches up with Colorado if you look at that
- 4:42Speaker 4: like it that that matches and Hurdle's playing really good.
- 4:45Speaker 4: He's find the back of the net now and you yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 4: one hundred percent. So it's just you you look at
- 4:51Speaker 4: the way they're playing, and I mean, I guess you'd
- 4:53Speaker 4: say Colorado has the advantage on d but I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 4: what would you say in net. I mean, Carter Hart's
- 4:58Speaker 4: been unbelievable for Vegas the first two rounds and where
- 5:01Speaker 4: where he's playing, and you know, I know he had
- 5:03Speaker 4: a long layoff, but the guy was at number one
- 5:05Speaker 4: at one point. I played with him in Philly. Like
- 5:06Speaker 4: he's been in the playoffs for he's played, he's you know,
- 5:09Speaker 4: he's been tested before. So I think this series is
- 5:14Speaker 4: going to be very interesting. I don't foresee Colorado stomping
- 5:20Speaker 4: over Vegas. It's just I think this Vegas team is
- 5:22Speaker 4: a team that we've expected them to be since the
- 5:25Speaker 4: start of the season, with the likes of Dallas and Colorado,
- 5:28Speaker 4: Minnesota as those you know, that upper echelon of teams,
- 5:31Speaker 4: and I think that they're right there. So this this
- 5:33Speaker 4: series is going to be a long one.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It's interesting thus far in the playoffs, the Avalanche and
- 5:37Speaker 1: the Hurricanes were combined sixteen to one with a plus
- 5:40Speaker 1: twenty eight goal differentials. That's part of the reason why
- 5:42Speaker 1: people are saying these teams are such favorit. It's not
- 5:44Speaker 1: necessarily looking at who they're facing. But I do want
- 5:47Speaker 1: to ask you did about Colorado's power play. I know
- 5:49Speaker 1: they've been better in the playoffs, they haven't been strength
- 5:51Speaker 1: overall obviously through much of the regular season. How important
- 5:53Speaker 1: I think special teams could be in the series.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Oh, it's going to be a big you know, you
- 5:57Speaker 3: look at Mitch Marner in that you talk about a while,
- 6:00Speaker 3: Bill Carlson, but that penalty kill can get on offense
- 6:02Speaker 3: as well. For Vegas, it's and you look on there,
- 6:06Speaker 3: you know, offensively with the power play for Vegas with
- 6:08Speaker 3: Doro Fiev and who knows where Stone is if he's
- 6:11Speaker 3: going to be back. And but listen, Colorado missing mccarr,
- 6:16Speaker 3: they're gonna get back potentially, they're gonna get back Malinsky
- 6:19Speaker 3: and Lecanon. I mean, those are two huge pieces that
- 6:21Speaker 3: leads to even more depth. But yeah, Colorado found some
- 6:25Speaker 3: stuff on the power play not being so married to
- 6:28Speaker 3: McKinnon on the flank and having him and nature just
- 6:30Speaker 3: kind of be kind of interchange between the the bumper
- 6:34Speaker 3: position and the flank bumper being the middle of the ice.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So it's really opened up some stuff.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And they haven't elected and I heard I heard them
- 6:41Speaker 3: talking on the broadcast like they just want them to
- 6:43Speaker 3: stop looking to pass the puck in the net and
- 6:46Speaker 3: they all have great shots, or like just shoot the
- 6:48Speaker 3: fucking puck, Like just put it to the net. You
- 6:50Speaker 3: guys are great players. You can pick spots. So it's
- 6:52Speaker 3: been better. And uh but I mean, you know, Nate
- 6:55Speaker 3: can tell you too. Just with special teams is important
- 6:58Speaker 3: in every playoff series. It's just it's what separates a
- 7:02Speaker 3: lot of games you've seen in these play specifically, like
- 7:05Speaker 3: a lot of there's been a lot of penalties called.
- 7:07Speaker 3: The expect it to be a lot tighter the next series,
- 7:11Speaker 3: but a lot of penalties have been called, and you
- 7:13Speaker 3: need a good power play and you know, conversely get
- 7:15Speaker 3: penalty kill.
- 7:17Speaker 1: All right, let's move on to the next series. That
- 7:18Speaker 1: Montreal was the last team to make the conference finals.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Hurricanes haven't played in almost two weeks. The Habs swept
- 7:24Speaker 1: the season series against Carolina three to erho Hurricanes are
- 7:27Speaker 1: in their third conference final and four years, but they've
- 7:29Speaker 1: gone one in eight in their previous two conference final appearances,
- 7:33Speaker 1: both against Florida. And it was a wild series, the
- 7:36Speaker 1: Habs and the Sabers, just wild momentum swings, and every
- 7:38Speaker 1: thought Buffalo was in control, Montreal had bounced back. When
- 7:40Speaker 1: you thought Montreal would take control, they could up eight
- 7:42Speaker 1: goals in Game six on home ice. I think games siven.
- 7:45Speaker 1: They win at New Hook obviously scores the winner in
- 7:47Speaker 1: exciting fashion and overtime. Again, Carolina is the favorite. I
- 7:50Speaker 1: think they win well. What chance do you give Montreal
- 7:53Speaker 1: to pull off an upset.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I give him a good chance, I really do. I
- 7:57Speaker 4: think if there's a team that matches up well with Carolina,
- 8:00Speaker 4: it's Montreal, just because if you look at how many
- 8:02Speaker 4: game breakers they have, I mean, they have like five
- 8:04Speaker 4: or six at least game breakers that can you know,
- 8:08Speaker 4: score with one opportunity. So I look at that, I
- 8:11Speaker 4: see and you said it. You know, I was lucky
- 8:13Speaker 4: enough to call one of those games in Carolina on
- 8:16Speaker 4: the road when they won on New Year's Day, and
- 8:20Speaker 4: that the thing with Carolina is that obviously they're so aggressive,
- 8:24Speaker 4: right and if Montreal can break the puck out quickly,
- 8:28Speaker 4: they can you know, flip pucks, getting foot races. You know,
- 8:31Speaker 4: obviously they got to win some puck battles against Carolina.
- 8:33Speaker 4: This team, they win a lot of puck battles. But
- 8:36Speaker 4: I just see, you know, if there's a team that
- 8:38Speaker 4: can also get to Freddie Anderson, it would be Montreal
- 8:41Speaker 4: too because if and you talk about power play right
- 8:44Speaker 4: like this, the special teams in this series is going
- 8:46Speaker 4: to have to be big for Montreal, especially just because
- 8:49Speaker 4: how lethal their power plays. And I give them the
- 8:51Speaker 4: edge on that obviously over Carolina. So if they can,
- 8:55Speaker 4: you know, get those things together, and like you said,
- 8:58Speaker 4: with new hook and their balanced scoring, they've gotten and
- 9:01Speaker 4: now you know with Nick Suzuki, who I thought, who's
- 9:04Speaker 4: really kind of come on. I think as his playoffs
- 9:08Speaker 4: has gone on, he's gotten better and better. So if
- 9:10Speaker 4: they can have all those things work for him, I
- 9:12Speaker 4: totally can see them upsetting Carolina.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Well, they swept him in the seasons heres and I
- 9:19Speaker 3: think they outscored him, like fifteen to eight was the
- 9:23Speaker 3: goal differential, but it's gonna you know, the two best
- 9:26Speaker 3: goalies in the playoffs, Dobeese and Anderson coming together. Freddie
- 9:30Speaker 3: X who shocked us all with you know, the way
- 9:35Speaker 3: he's played. And then also you look at Dobeesh and
- 9:38Speaker 3: there's always a story of a goalie that comes out
- 9:40Speaker 3: of nowhere and you're kind of like, this guy just
- 9:43Speaker 3: gets so hot. I always look back to Anti Naemi
- 9:46Speaker 3: the year they won in Chicago, just a goalie that's
- 9:48Speaker 3: good down low and the team just kind of rallies
- 9:52Speaker 3: around him and he's kind of playing the villain a
- 9:54Speaker 3: little bit, which I love. So to me, I'm like,
- 9:58Speaker 3: to me, I'm like, it's really going to be down
- 9:59Speaker 3: to your point. Special teams. You know, Carolina's penalty kill
- 10:03Speaker 3: has been incredible, looks almost like beatable, but that's all
- 10:05Speaker 3: because of Freddy Anderson, and if they can get if
- 10:08Speaker 3: they can't get to Freddy Anderson, it's gonna be quick,
- 10:10Speaker 3: and I think it'll be real fast. But yeah, it's
- 10:13Speaker 3: gonna be a It's been a lot of I feel
- 10:15Speaker 3: like it's gonna be a lot of two to one
- 10:16Speaker 3: hockey games, super tight. So we'll see if Montreal can
- 10:20Speaker 3: kind of play in those games. They've shown they can
- 10:23Speaker 3: winning some big games tight. So but yeah, it's gonna
- 10:26Speaker 3: be a it's gonna be a fucking great series.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Man.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And even at the coaching battle too, just Marty Saneivers
- 10:32Speaker 3: Rod Brenda Moore say.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Louis Finesse versus grit who wants it? That can only
- 10:39Speaker 2: be one?
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, funnily, but so if two guys look at the
- 10:45Speaker 1: two fittest head coach in the league, look at a
- 10:47Speaker 1: little strongman contest after the games are done, all right
- 10:50Speaker 1: off the ice. Not long after the Swedish franchise icon
- 10:54Speaker 1: Matt Sundeen how to take over the Francis in Toronto,
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Vancouver Canucks, dipping their toes in to their Swedish past.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Henrick and Daniel Sedin co presidence of hockey operations. The
- 11:03Speaker 1: twins played seven teen seasons together in Vancouver, ranked first
- 11:06Speaker 1: and second in franchise history and both assistant points, Daniel
- 11:10Speaker 1: taking first all timing goals to the team. They've been
- 11:12Speaker 1: working in player development for the team since twenty twenty two.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Their first one was co presidence was named Ryan Johnson,
- 11:18Speaker 1: the general manager. Johnson serves a special advisor to the
- 11:20Speaker 1: GM as well as general manager of the team's HL affiliate.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Didn't take long for Johnson to make his mark, as
- 11:26Speaker 1: Adam Foot is out of a job along with the assistants.
- 11:28Speaker 2: JD.
- 11:29Speaker 1: What do you make of another team relying on their past.
- 11:31Speaker 1: This is the Conocks now going to Sedeens to run
- 11:33Speaker 1: the team.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all X players starting to run the NHL.
- 11:37Speaker 3: So we're getting rid of all the I mean it's
- 11:41Speaker 3: I think the Sadeens, you know, to their credit, have
- 11:44Speaker 3: been around the organization a ton. You know, when I
- 11:47Speaker 3: was finishing up three four years ago, which is crazy
- 11:51Speaker 3: to say that I've been out that long. It feels
- 11:52Speaker 3: like yesterday. But they were helping down in Abbotsford. They
- 11:56Speaker 3: were doing a bunch of player development stuff and they
- 11:58Speaker 3: apparently they were around the team a lot. They go
- 12:01Speaker 3: to the miners, they go to abbots for There's not
- 12:04Speaker 3: much you see the superstars ex players that are going
- 12:08Speaker 3: to Abbotsford. Like, if you've been to Abbitsford, it's Abosphord.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It's nothing to do there but the rink. So it's
- 12:15Speaker 3: pretty cool to see, you know, Ryan Johnson, I mean,
- 12:18Speaker 3: it's it's a good GM. He's was also the GM.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I believe of Abbotsford when they won the call their Cup.
- 12:25Speaker 3: So he's got a lot of he understands this team,
- 12:30Speaker 3: this organization, and we're going to see many Melhotra coming up,
- 12:32Speaker 3: I'm sure Nate and being this head coach. And again
- 12:36Speaker 3: it's I think they're keeping it in the house and
- 12:38Speaker 3: I like that they're doing that. They're home growing, They're
- 12:40Speaker 3: home growing it, and I think it's it's a smart
- 12:43Speaker 3: move by them.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I love this move, Jay, and I like how you
- 12:46Speaker 4: say in house, because I think the Canucks needed to
- 12:50Speaker 4: make a They needed to make the right move with
- 12:53Speaker 4: what everything that's gone on and how bad it's gone
- 12:56Speaker 4: for them. And I think with bringing in the Twins,
- 12:59Speaker 4: you know, they they're smart guys and they've been around, They've,
- 13:03Speaker 4: like you said, they they've been involved with Abbotsford and
- 13:06Speaker 4: this team they need they need that. And you said
- 13:10Speaker 4: with Ryan Johnson being familiar with abbots are just coming up,
- 13:12Speaker 4: it's just gonna be a seamless transition I think for
- 13:15Speaker 4: the Canucks. I really do like this move a lot.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Meantime, last week, when Nate was playing Daddy Daycaren Jad
- 13:21Speaker 1: and are doing the show, the news came down Craig
- 13:23Speaker 1: Berubi out and then this news where Chris Knoblock out
- 13:27Speaker 1: after apparently they asked for permission to doctor Bruce Cassidy. Hey,
- 13:31Speaker 1: we still have a coach with Bruce. You want to
- 13:32Speaker 1: come in here?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Oh, we should get real quess over.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Us tenth head coach in fifteen years of the Oilers
- 13:37Speaker 1: looking for economical will be playing under a sixth coach
- 13:40Speaker 1: with the Oilers. The team has reportedly received permission from
- 13:43Speaker 1: Toronto to interview Craig Berube. Maybe a coaching swap happening.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Nate Berube goes to Edmonton, Knoblock goes to Toronto. It
- 13:50Speaker 1: will be the first time since Torts and lam Vigno
- 13:53Speaker 1: switched between the Rangers and the Cannucks in twenty thirteen.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Yeah, if things couldn't look worse for the Oilers with
- 13:59Speaker 4: the whole knob Block thing and with McDavid and Leon,
- 14:04Speaker 4: you know, giving them their two cents after the season,
- 14:07Speaker 4: and now that I mean, I don't know, I mean
- 14:09Speaker 4: with with with the switch. I mean, Craig Bruby is
- 14:12Speaker 4: a great coach and he's he's won a Cup. It
- 14:16Speaker 4: didn't work in Toronto. I mean, there's a lot of
- 14:18Speaker 4: coaches that we that we know are available, that it's
- 14:21Speaker 4: you know, it's on the carousel right now, JD. So
- 14:24Speaker 4: I guess it's kind of pick your poison, who's up next?
- 14:28Speaker 4: But I mean, I I like Craig Bruby, I really do.
- 14:30Speaker 4: I like the way he coaches. I think that, you know,
- 14:34Speaker 4: it just it didn't work out in Toronto, but I
- 14:36Speaker 4: think it could work out somewhere else. I mean, Edmonton
- 14:39Speaker 4: is interesting one.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I get you know, they're all the talk you
- 14:44Speaker 3: hear is you know Edmonton needs a defensive minded, gruff
- 14:49Speaker 3: coach that's just going to keep everybody accountable. And this
- 14:53Speaker 3: could be the guy in Craig Bruby. Now for Toronto.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Do I think now blocks the guy? I don't know,
- 14:58Speaker 3: because now blocks so stoic. You don't even know much
- 15:02Speaker 3: about him, and even un Chris Chris, even when they're winning,
- 15:07Speaker 3: Even when they were winning, we like didn't quite know
- 15:09Speaker 3: if it was because of him or the or the players.
- 15:12Speaker 3: I think it was. I think he's a smart coach
- 15:13Speaker 3: and makes some good adjustments. But yeah, I think Craig.
- 15:16Speaker 3: You know, listen, I think even I'd look at Adam
- 15:20Speaker 3: Foot for Edmonton. You know, Adam Foot coming in and
- 15:24Speaker 3: I think he got the short end of the stick
- 15:26Speaker 3: in Vancouver. I think, you know, talk left and and
- 15:30Speaker 3: then he had no team and they blew the team up.
- 15:32Speaker 3: And then you're having a coach basically an HL team
- 15:35Speaker 3: and he's Coast Hockey League team, and you're trying to
- 15:37Speaker 3: figure that shit out. So it's like, I feel like
- 15:39Speaker 3: Adam Foot will kind of find his footing once again.
- 15:45Speaker 3: It was low hanging fruit right there. Low hanging fruit.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I didn't I got to foot the bill though.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Ord Carl, to which we got to mention we had
- 15:55Speaker 1: guess he's not going anywhere.
- 15:57Speaker 3: He's not, David Carl, you need to pay him two
- 16:00Speaker 3: hundred million. Why would he want to leave there? Because
- 16:03Speaker 3: he knows it's gonna happen. I fan of the show.
- 16:06Speaker 3: David Carl, fan of the show. But it's unsure. He's
- 16:09Speaker 3: unsure if he's going to be successful there, So it's
- 16:11Speaker 3: got to be worth the money.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Matt fantas Matt Carl Fantastic on Unscripted former Flyer Prongs
- 16:17Speaker 1: defense partner, a close friend of Nate's. David Carl not
- 16:20Speaker 1: the shattiest guy, good coach.
- 16:23Speaker 3: He listens to the show. He'll be careful ships talking
- 16:27Speaker 3: to our guests. Ur don He's agree with me. Like coaches.
- 16:33Speaker 4: That's why he's a good coach.
- 16:35Speaker 2: He's a good coach. That's right. Doesn't give you much,
- 16:37Speaker 2: doesn't give you cards to the chest.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Boy, This really is my point with Edmonton and this
- 16:43Speaker 1: is from Steve Simmons, your boy. Chris Nablock was hired
- 16:47Speaker 1: to coach the Oilers after they had bought him out
- 16:49Speaker 1: mid season three years ago. He took them in his
- 16:51Speaker 1: first season to within a goal the Stanley Cup. In
- 16:53Speaker 1: his second year, they went back to the Stanley Cup final.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You can't do much better than that. Over the past years,
- 16:58Speaker 1: Gentleman stan Bowman got snookered on a free agency signing
- 17:02Speaker 1: deal by the Saint Louis Blues, failed to pick up
- 17:04Speaker 1: a goldener consequence, signed some bad contracts and lessened his
- 17:08Speaker 1: roster exponentially. So the coacher took them from nowhere to
- 17:11Speaker 1: somewhere got shown the door, and the GM who took
- 17:14Speaker 1: them from somewhere to nowhere remains in charge.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And and not to mention, stan Bowman doubled down and said,
- 17:20Speaker 3: probably not a lot of moves by us. This obviously
- 17:22Speaker 3: we're gonna kind of run it back. Are you fucking nuts? Stan,
- 17:26Speaker 3: Are you nuts?
- 17:27Speaker 4: Like definition of insanity?
- 17:29Speaker 3: Right, yeah, I mean that's doing the same thing. They're
- 17:33Speaker 3: not doing the same well, I mean, yeah that is,
- 17:35Speaker 3: but they're it's it's awful, like it the accountability of
- 17:40Speaker 3: like looking in the mirror for management in Edmonton, I
- 17:43Speaker 3: think and frustrated me because having been in the organization
- 17:47Speaker 3: for the Cup of Coffee, I was you see just
- 17:49Speaker 3: how passionate Leon and Connor are so like you. You
- 17:52Speaker 3: almost you want them to win so bad because you
- 17:55Speaker 3: know how much they want it and how much it
- 17:59Speaker 3: consumes them.
- 18:00Speaker 2: So you know, to put this forward.
- 18:03Speaker 3: And then he even says like, no, they're not going
- 18:05Speaker 3: to be involved in the coaching high because they don't
- 18:07Speaker 3: have the depth of knowledge. That's what Stan Bowman said.
- 18:10Speaker 3: They don't have the depth of knowledge that you know,
- 18:13Speaker 3: our staff has to make the decision or I'm like,
- 18:16Speaker 3: are you fucking crazy? Like I'm sorry, could you may
- 18:20Speaker 3: you might be a good human being, but that is
- 18:22Speaker 3: the dumbest shit that you wouldn't let Connor and Leon
- 18:25Speaker 3: have some say in a coaching higher because to say
- 18:29Speaker 3: that they don't have the depth of knowledge. They know
- 18:31Speaker 3: more about hockey just by osmosis and how good of
- 18:35Speaker 3: players they are than anybody. Again, it's that they want
- 18:38Speaker 3: somebody that understands their vision as much as the other
- 18:41Speaker 3: players around because they're the ones that need to play
- 18:43Speaker 3: for you. So yeah, it still pisses me off. And
- 18:47Speaker 3: you know, if they bring in Craig will see how
- 18:49Speaker 3: it works. But it's up top for me. It trickles down.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I do love Chief, He's a capable of being a
- 18:55Speaker 1: guy who can engineer turn around. But yeah, this one
- 18:57Speaker 1: goes back to Stan Bowman. One more thought. Then we
- 18:58Speaker 1: get to our special guest, Tony Bernardo. Tony's all about
- 19:02Speaker 1: John turn Relic because they're both Italian and Mama. But
- 19:05Speaker 1: things getting heated as Vegas eliminates Anahim in the second round,
- 19:08Speaker 1: and then towards who just worked in the media, shame
- 19:10Speaker 1: on you. Most of the Golden Nights players were not
- 19:13Speaker 1: made available to the media after the series deciding game.
- 19:16Speaker 1: The team has fined one hundred thousand dollars for a
- 19:19Speaker 1: flagrant violation of playoff media regulations. Can I just talk
- 19:22Speaker 1: to the players?
- 19:23Speaker 5: No?
- 19:23Speaker 1: But they also lost a second round pick. Now there's
- 19:26Speaker 1: one too in the NHL. Nathan doesn't care about picks.
- 19:28Speaker 1: It's Vegas, but what are we doing? Pretty stiff penalty,
- 19:31Speaker 1: And I like it the league bringing him down for
- 19:33Speaker 1: not allowing lot rapporters to get in the locker room.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Don't mess with Gary Towards, don't mess with Gary. Don't
- 19:41Speaker 4: do it. Just don't do it. And you know he
- 19:43Speaker 4: got warrened jed too. You know, he got warned for sure.
- 19:46Speaker 4: But I mean, I mean it's yeah, it's you know,
- 19:50Speaker 4: at the end of the day, we're trying to grow
- 19:52Speaker 4: the game, and the media is a big part of that,
- 19:55Speaker 4: and especially in the playoffs, you know, to get more viewership,
- 19:58Speaker 4: all those things, and they have to write their stories
- 20:00Speaker 4: and these guys have to be available. I mean we're
- 20:03Speaker 4: told that from the from the start of the season,
- 20:05Speaker 4: you know, players too, not just coaches, that we have
- 20:07Speaker 4: to be available. So it was it was comical seeing
- 20:11Speaker 4: Mitch though saying, hey, we got ten minutes, he'll leave us.
- 20:16Speaker 4: We got to get on the bus when we got
- 20:17Speaker 4: ten minutes.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Well, I talked to somebody in the Nights organization and
- 20:24Speaker 3: I can't say exactly what he said, but there was
- 20:27Speaker 3: extenuating circumstances and I thought NHL would rescind the second
- 20:32Speaker 3: round pick. I did what I heard based on no, no, no,
- 20:38Speaker 3: you're fine. I mean, I I I'm surprised they kept it,
- 20:41Speaker 3: but I think I think it was still enough where
- 20:46Speaker 3: where where you know, the NHL was like, we're not
- 20:50Speaker 3: pulling it back just to really make a point, because
- 20:53Speaker 3: I don't On top of that, I don't think the
- 20:54Speaker 3: NHL ever wants to look stupid either in terms of
- 20:57Speaker 3: you know, they put down that regardless of what happened.
- 21:01Speaker 3: They're like, it doesn't matter, you have to make yourself available.
- 21:05Speaker 3: But yeah, it's it's an interesting it was an interesting one,
- 21:09Speaker 3: and yeah, it's it's tough. I think you're I think
- 21:12Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you still gotta just
- 21:15Speaker 3: whatever it is and whatever you got going on, you
- 21:17Speaker 3: gotta just you gotta get out there and sit there
- 21:21Speaker 3: for if you gotta answer one question and leave, you
- 21:24Speaker 3: got to answer one question and leave.
- 21:25Speaker 2: So that's it.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Ultimately disappointing there as far as the media are concerned,
- 21:30Speaker 1: The Vegas couldn't care less.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Hey, look, the conference finals.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Let's move this thing along, all right, Bless you too,
- 21:34Speaker 1: still to come here In NHL unscripted Tony Cornado with
- 21:37Speaker 1: stories of comparing how Brian Leech and Matthew Shaffer size up,
- 21:41Speaker 1: plus his own journey overcoming serious adversity in the game,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and who he likes the Conference finals. Tony g is
- 21:46Speaker 1: coming up after this on NHL Unscripted. Our next guest
- 22:03Speaker 1: was draped in the sixth round, one hundred and twenty
- 22:05Speaker 1: four row up with the New York Rangers the nineteen
- 22:06Speaker 1: eighty two NHL Draft. You were going to collect two
- 22:08Speaker 1: hundred and forty eight goals and four hundred ninety two
- 22:10Speaker 1: points in seven hundred and seventy four career games the Rangers, Kings,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and Sharks before embarking a successful coaching career that saw
- 22:17Speaker 1: him serve as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche and
- 22:19Speaker 1: at the University of Wisconsin. An Olympian is both a
- 22:22Speaker 1: player and a coach, and the Bill Masterton Trophy winner
- 22:25Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety seven. It's everyone's favorite, Tony Granado. Tony,
- 22:28Speaker 1: great to see you, Thanks guys, thanks for having me.
- 22:32Speaker 1: We always love senior course in NHL Newick. You always
- 22:34Speaker 1: busy on NHL Neverwock Radio as well with Nate Thompson.
- 22:37Speaker 1: So let's get right to it. What do you make
- 22:39Speaker 1: of the conference finals matchups? Is this what you would expected?
- 22:41Speaker 1: Avalanche Golden Knights and the Haves and the Hurricanes.
- 22:46Speaker 5: I expected the Avalanche Golden Knights probably to meet up,
- 22:51Speaker 5: you know, the Golden Knights having to beat the two
- 22:56Speaker 5: teams they did were interesting challengers. But but I thought
- 23:00Speaker 5: the maturity and the you know, torch coming in there
- 23:02Speaker 5: and kind of settling that group down and get ready
- 23:04Speaker 5: for playoffs was appropriate at the time of the change
- 23:07Speaker 5: and the coaching change, So I expected that. I think
- 23:10Speaker 5: the Montreal one would be the biggest surprise of that
- 23:13Speaker 5: team being there still at this point. So they've done
- 23:16Speaker 5: things with the goaltender that I think everybody coming in
- 23:19Speaker 5: knew he was good, but didn't know if he could
- 23:22Speaker 5: put it together a run like he's had. So kudos
- 23:25Speaker 5: to Montreal and Dobish and what they've accomplished. And and
- 23:30Speaker 5: you know, it looks like Carolina is the big favorite.
- 23:32Speaker 5: That looks like Colorado's. I wouldn't say quite as big
- 23:36Speaker 5: of a favorite, but the favorite to advance. But I
- 23:39Speaker 5: think both of these series are very interesting for different reasons.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Ton you know, what do you make I wanted to
- 23:47Speaker 3: talk to you a little bit about like the coaching stuff,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and you look at Torts in Vegas and specifically you know,
- 23:53Speaker 3: and finds the side. You know, he comes in with
- 23:57Speaker 3: seven games left in the season, and how is that
- 24:00Speaker 3: as a coach from your lens, like coming into to
- 24:04Speaker 3: it team like this veteran or not and having to
- 24:07Speaker 3: like earn the trust of these players, and then now
- 24:09Speaker 3: you're going into the conference finals staring down the Colorado Avalanche.
- 24:14Speaker 5: You know, when that kind of a move is made,
- 24:17Speaker 5: it does seem kind of drastic, but sometimes it makes sense.
- 24:20Speaker 5: And the reason I say that maybe it makes sense
- 24:22Speaker 5: in this situation is I think we all were expecting
- 24:25Speaker 5: a little more rhythm to Vegas's game throughout the year,
- 24:29Speaker 5: and it looked like they were pottering around, you know,
- 24:32Speaker 5: mediocrity for part of it, and it's like, gosh, there's
- 24:35Speaker 5: something just not running as smoothly as you thought it would.
- 24:40Speaker 5: So I think that that kind of made sense as
- 24:43Speaker 5: you look back on it when it happened, you're like,
- 24:45Speaker 5: oh my gosh, you gotta be kidneyed. Bruce Cassie's a
- 24:47Speaker 5: great coach. Vegas looks like, you know, as always, they'll
- 24:51Speaker 5: be ready for the playoffs. But something was not quite right.
- 24:53Speaker 5: So that made sense to me and Towards coming in
- 24:56Speaker 5: there was probably the right guy that was available to
- 24:59Speaker 5: be able to start that engine up and get these
- 25:01Speaker 5: guys fired up. And most importantly, what you want you
- 25:04Speaker 5: want your best players to have the right mindset heading
- 25:08Speaker 5: into playoffs. So when Marner and Towrts had their little
- 25:12Speaker 5: introduction to one another, whether they had a relationship from
- 25:15Speaker 5: the past or not, it looked like something there got Marner,
- 25:18Speaker 5: you know, more relaxed and more creative offensively, and Carter
- 25:22Speaker 5: Hart and net they had They for sure had time
- 25:25Speaker 5: together in Philly. So that relationship with your starting goalie
- 25:28Speaker 5: and a new head coach coming in. If those two
- 25:30Speaker 5: players were the ones that were impacted the most, one
- 25:34Speaker 5: of them is in the net and one of them
- 25:35Speaker 5: is leading the offensively, I think then that's where you
- 25:39Speaker 5: can see the immediate effects of how it's helped Vegas
- 25:44Speaker 5: through the first two rounds.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Just an extension off of JD's question, Tony and just
- 25:50Speaker 4: you know where the coaching landscape is today and how
- 25:54Speaker 4: you know you're seeing these young coaches and I look
- 25:56Speaker 4: at Martin both and you're seeing coaches like Marty Saint
- 26:01Speaker 4: Louis and there you know the way the way they coach,
- 26:04Speaker 4: and it's just different. Now you know, where do you
- 26:07Speaker 4: stand and you know, how do you feel on where
- 26:09Speaker 4: the coaching I guess is going these days and the
- 26:11Speaker 4: philosophy behind it.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Well, Marty's a different type of coach and towards there's
- 26:16Speaker 5: no doubt that the way he has helped this younger
- 26:20Speaker 5: team gain confidence in the underdog position that they've kind
- 26:25Speaker 5: of been in and kind of building them to gain
- 26:28Speaker 5: confidence and their goaltender gain confidence in the way they play,
- 26:32Speaker 5: become unflappable when the other team out shoots your thirty
- 26:34Speaker 5: something to nine and you still find a way to
- 26:36Speaker 5: win a game and be able to walk away from
- 26:39Speaker 5: a defeat like they got in Game six against Buffalo
- 26:43Speaker 5: and be able to respond and bounce forward, like he says,
- 26:45Speaker 5: like a little things like that that Marty has has
- 26:48Speaker 5: kind of whether it's silliness, whether it's you know, playing
- 26:51Speaker 5: the underdog role that he played his entire career, not
- 26:54Speaker 5: being drafted and making it the Hall of Fame. You
- 26:56Speaker 5: know he's done for Kaffield, Suzuki Slevkowski, the goaltender. You
- 27:00Speaker 5: know that team can rally around your coach is whether
- 27:04Speaker 5: you call it silliness, whether you call it just a
- 27:08Speaker 5: different type of attitude than most coaches have had. I think, Marty,
- 27:12Speaker 5: you know when he took the job, unless I kid ourselves,
- 27:15Speaker 5: you expect the guy to be hired that's coaching somewhere
- 27:18Speaker 5: else or has a history of coaching in the NHL.
- 27:20Speaker 5: He was coaching kids, and you know he's coaching his
- 27:23Speaker 5: kids back home, and all of a sudden you bring
- 27:25Speaker 5: in a youth kid that's coaching pee wee's or ban
- 27:27Speaker 5: them and say, hey's your NHL coach. Now you're like okay,
- 27:30Speaker 5: and then you give them some time to say, well,
- 27:32Speaker 5: why did they pick him? I think right now we're
- 27:34Speaker 5: understanding why they picked him. And he has a nice
- 27:38Speaker 5: way of getting the most out of players and making
- 27:41Speaker 5: the players believe in themselves. And as a coach, that's
- 27:44Speaker 5: your job. Make your players believe that you can beat
- 27:47Speaker 5: somebody and that you can be productive and that you
- 27:50Speaker 5: can be as successful. And he's whatever he's given those guys,
- 27:54Speaker 5: they've really kind of molded as a team and have
- 27:57Speaker 5: been been very exciting so far throughout the playoffs.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Marty, whether it's wilful Wall Street post game chance
- 28:04Speaker 1: just getting fast fired up here.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Before show.
- 28:10Speaker 5: And Nate. Don't forget.
- 28:15Speaker 1: You came to the HL Tony the Rangers the same
- 28:17Speaker 1: year as young defenseman named Brian Leach when the Calder
- 28:19Speaker 1: Trophy that year. A lot of comps between Leachy and
- 28:22Speaker 1: Matthew Schaeffer. What similarities do you see? What differences do
- 28:25Speaker 1: you see?
- 28:27Speaker 5: That's a good one is because this is interesting when
- 28:30Speaker 5: you say that. The first time I saw Quinn Hughes
- 28:32Speaker 5: play and obviously different size, but I said, oh my gosh,
- 28:36Speaker 5: this guy controls the game and the puck and makes
- 28:39Speaker 5: it easy for the forwards because he pulls two or
- 28:42Speaker 5: three defenders to him and the next thing you know,
- 28:44Speaker 5: he passes it to you and you got a lot
- 28:45Speaker 5: more time in space. Uh so, uh I do Since
- 28:50Speaker 5: you bring up Schaeffer and Leech, when when Brian came
- 28:52Speaker 5: to the Rangers, you know, all of a sudden there
- 28:55Speaker 5: was a different type of player that joined the lineup
- 28:59Speaker 5: and it made everybody else go holy cow. Like I
- 29:02Speaker 5: just said, it makes it easy on the full because
- 29:04Speaker 5: he's created so much offense. Uh So, yeah, I see similarities.
- 29:08Speaker 5: I think what Schaeffer did. Uh you know, I got
- 29:12Speaker 5: to meet him last year at the Draft and just
- 29:14Speaker 5: sit down with the kid for a few minutes, and
- 29:16Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm a fan of that kid, and I
- 29:18Speaker 5: ain't gonna cheer loud for him and hoping things go
- 29:21Speaker 5: well for him, and to see what he's accomplished under
- 29:25Speaker 5: this you know situation that he had, you know, the
- 29:27Speaker 5: year leading up with the injury and with what he
- 29:29Speaker 5: had to deal with off the ice. Uh, and just
- 29:32Speaker 5: to be such a nice, nice human being. Uh, it's
- 29:36Speaker 5: just been a great story. Uh. So Brian Leach would
- 29:39Speaker 5: take that compliment when you compare him and it and
- 29:42Speaker 5: Brian Leach for me, you know, you got Chris Chellios
- 29:45Speaker 5: as a defenseman American defenseman. You got maybe Phil Housley
- 29:50Speaker 5: and maybe a couple others, But but Brian Leach was
- 29:52Speaker 5: as good as anybody.
- 29:54Speaker 4: Uh.
- 29:54Speaker 5: And I'm glad you brought his name up, because Brian
- 29:56Speaker 5: was was one of those ones that was kind of
- 29:58Speaker 5: under the radar, didn't like the media attention so much
- 30:00Speaker 5: and kind of quietly did his thing. But he was
- 30:03Speaker 5: certainly a Hall of Fame player that deserves a lot
- 30:07Speaker 5: of attention.
- 30:08Speaker 2: You gotta, you gotta favorite Brian Leech.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Story off the top of your head or something that
- 30:13Speaker 3: sticks out to you, whether on the ice or give
- 30:16Speaker 3: me off the ice.
- 30:16Speaker 5: Is he like the off the ice stuff? Because you heard.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Guy. Yeah, he's a.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Phenomenal, phenomenal guy, phenomenal teammate, very one of those superstars
- 30:30Speaker 5: that just shows up and you look at him in
- 30:32Speaker 5: the locker room, you look around and you go, he
- 30:35Speaker 5: doesn't kind of play that role in the room. He's
- 30:38Speaker 5: just quiet. But when he gets on the ice, he
- 30:39Speaker 5: gets the puck on his stick. He made so many
- 30:43Speaker 5: things happen, So just one that I you know, as
- 30:46Speaker 5: I'll tell you this though, as a young player coming
- 30:49Speaker 5: into the NHL to do it with somebody else. I
- 30:52Speaker 5: was a rookie the same year as Brian was, you know,
- 30:54Speaker 5: and I had I not had Brian to help me
- 30:56Speaker 5: and kind of be there as a partner, you know,
- 30:59Speaker 5: it would have been much more difficult for myself. So
- 31:02Speaker 5: I appreciate the help he gave me and the attention
- 31:05Speaker 5: that that he brought to our team and our organization
- 31:09Speaker 5: with what he did his rookie year. I mean as
- 31:11Speaker 5: a defenseman. You know, You're right, Schaeffer was probably the
- 31:14Speaker 5: comparable for for coming in and being able to dominate
- 31:17Speaker 5: the way Brian did back in nineteen eighty eight.
- 31:21Speaker 1: J D.
- 31:21Speaker 5: That's a long time ago.
- 31:24Speaker 3: And I love how you just danced around the off
- 31:26Speaker 3: ice question this well, I was just an absolute master class.
- 31:32Speaker 5: And you know what, he used to come over. We
- 31:34Speaker 5: used to play. You want to know what we did
- 31:35Speaker 5: in nineteen eighty eight, He used to come over. We
- 31:37Speaker 5: used to play was it was an Xbox, it was
- 31:39Speaker 5: something else.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Into the original into.
- 31:44Speaker 5: We was playing Intendo. My wife used to make us lunch.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Brian being single, we'd hang out on the couch. That's
- 31:49Speaker 5: what we did in our off days. We played Nintendo.
- 31:51Speaker 5: I love I love it. I gave it.
- 31:54Speaker 2: I love it as the best ever. That was Ladies
- 31:57Speaker 2: and gentlemen. That was a.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Master respond answer we're looking for.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a great response. That's a master Go ahead, Nate,
- 32:05Speaker 3: go take the LA question then.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I was, That's what I was. I mean,
- 32:08Speaker 4: we're talking about off ice. You get traded to LA
- 32:10Speaker 4: in eighty nine, and that's the Gretzki era. I mean,
- 32:13Speaker 4: there's got to be some some Hollywood stories memories off
- 32:16Speaker 4: the ice being in LA at that time.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Yes, and so yeah, you know what it's like as
- 32:23Speaker 5: a player though, like yes, yeah, your rookie year. You
- 32:26Speaker 5: get this team and you're all excited. You're in New York,
- 32:29Speaker 5: you're playing an original six, and it's like, oh man,
- 32:31Speaker 5: I can't this is going to be great. Then and
- 32:34Speaker 5: I got the old contract signed. After my first year,
- 32:37Speaker 5: they gave me a extension, which was unheard of back then.
- 32:40Speaker 5: They said, hey, we want you to be a Ranger.
- 32:42Speaker 5: I heard this. I heard this. We want you to
- 32:44Speaker 5: be the Ranger forever. Right. You're like, okay, that's great.
- 32:47Speaker 5: I only played one year, but forever sounds pretty good.
- 32:50Speaker 5: And so I signed a two year extension deal and
- 32:53Speaker 5: you're thinking, okay, we can get a house now. We're
- 32:55Speaker 5: all was set. They just told me I'm gonna be
- 32:57Speaker 5: here forever. Well, sure enough. Few months later that you
- 32:59Speaker 5: get the rumors around, hey, Tony Gernando maybe going to
- 33:03Speaker 5: La blah blah blah, and you know what I thought
- 33:05Speaker 5: of it, and I'm thinking, man, that would really stink,
- 33:07Speaker 5: and trade it. And then I get a call from
- 33:09Speaker 5: La saying, hey, this is Bruce McNall calling. We just
- 33:13Speaker 5: did trade for you and we can't get wait till
- 33:16Speaker 5: you get to LA. And I said, that's really cool,
- 33:18Speaker 5: you know, and he goes and by the way, Tony goes,
- 33:21Speaker 5: when when you played against us last year, Wayne said
- 33:24Speaker 5: after the game, he came up to me, he goes, Hey,
- 33:26Speaker 5: if we can get that Grnado guy someday, that would
- 33:28Speaker 5: be really good and helpful. And I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 33:30Speaker 5: Wayne Gretzky knows who I am. Wow. So that was
- 33:33Speaker 5: the introduction to LA, and I didn't miss and think,
- 33:37Speaker 5: oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm, you know, traded anymore.
- 33:39Speaker 5: I'm like, Okay, I got a reason that I want
- 33:42Speaker 5: to be in LA. And so so that kind of
- 33:45Speaker 5: was was really what Wayne was all about in welcoming
- 33:49Speaker 5: me and Thomas. Thomas Anstrum and I were traded together,
- 33:52Speaker 5: which also helps going with a partner. And then we
- 33:55Speaker 5: got to LA and got the chance to see what
- 33:57Speaker 5: Wayne was all about for close to seven years, and
- 34:04Speaker 5: I can't tell you how much excitement, how much I learned,
- 34:09Speaker 5: and what it was to be alongside grets And then
- 34:13Speaker 5: there were other great players there. That's Larry Robinson was
- 34:16Speaker 5: still there, Dave Taylor, the Grovertire, Rob Blake, Kelly Rudy.
- 34:19Speaker 5: I go on and on with our Jarry Curry, Grant Fear,
- 34:22Speaker 5: Paul Coffee, Rick Hoocket, we had we had brought in
- 34:25Speaker 5: so many characters and big people in the game that
- 34:29Speaker 5: became my teammates. So I was lucky as heck. So
- 34:33Speaker 5: those memories of the opportunity that I was given because
- 34:36Speaker 5: I was traded was those were unbelievable fun times. And
- 34:41Speaker 5: we're going to go back to ninety three because it's
- 34:43Speaker 5: coming and it's going to come into play here in
- 34:45Speaker 5: the next week or two because Montreal was the last
- 34:48Speaker 5: Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup and they were
- 34:50Speaker 5: the ones that beat us in ninety three, So those
- 34:53Speaker 5: those memories will recircle here in the next few weeks
- 34:57Speaker 5: because the Montreal fans and all of Canada and remember
- 35:01Speaker 5: that team as the last team that has won.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Certainly was Patrick Law unbelievab obviously in the nineteen ninety
- 35:07Speaker 1: three has team. But what you were unbelievable about, Tony,
- 35:09Speaker 1: was showing perseverance. In nineteen ninety six, you sustained a
- 35:12Speaker 1: major head injury, had to undergo serious brain surgery. You
- 35:15Speaker 1: signed with San Jose that summer, have an incredible comeback
- 35:17Speaker 1: season twenty five goals, one hundred and fifty nine poundy
- 35:20Speaker 1: minutes you win the Masters, And what do you remember
- 35:22Speaker 1: from that whole saga and about that comeback?
- 35:26Speaker 5: Ah boy. The injury happened at a game in Hartford,
- 35:32Speaker 5: and like a dumb hockey player, I got up from
- 35:34Speaker 5: the injury and I shaped, you know, I am fine,
- 35:37Speaker 5: I'll be fine. The trainer kept going, you all right,
- 35:39Speaker 5: you know you got hit pretty good, but yeah, I'm fine,
- 35:40Speaker 5: leave me alone. And I knew it was a little
- 35:44Speaker 5: more than just to you know, you get these year
- 35:46Speaker 5: stars and you become a little bit dazed, which happens,
- 35:49Speaker 5: you know, quite a bit when you get hit. But
- 35:51Speaker 5: then the next couple of days it didn't get better.
- 35:54Speaker 5: I played one more game and then things got really bad,
- 35:57Speaker 5: so I did. I had a bleed in my in
- 35:59Speaker 5: my temporal left temporal lobe that needed surgery, had the surgery.
- 36:07Speaker 5: When the surgery was done, I assumed I was done playing.
- 36:11Speaker 5: I didn't think the doctors would ever prove me or
- 36:14Speaker 5: give me the thumbs up to say, hey, you can
- 36:16Speaker 5: go back and play. But my doctor was convinced that
- 36:20Speaker 5: the work he did kind of took care of everything
- 36:25Speaker 5: needed to be done, and that I would heal up
- 36:27Speaker 5: and have a chance to return. So that took six
- 36:29Speaker 5: months of kind of seeing doctors, seeing specialists, training, training
- 36:35Speaker 5: hard enough to realize and think, well, maybe it's a possibility.
- 36:40Speaker 5: So I was given a second chance. The doctors cleared me.
- 36:44Speaker 5: I think it was August first. I went to Mayo
- 36:47Speaker 5: Clinic after seeing three different specialists, three different hospitals, just
- 36:51Speaker 5: to make sure that I knew what I was doing
- 36:53Speaker 5: when I was going to have to make that decision.
- 36:56Speaker 5: So I came back. I got to play five bonus years.
- 36:59Speaker 5: That's the way I looked at it. So the luxury
- 37:01Speaker 5: or the bonus that I got was, you know, you
- 37:06Speaker 5: play your first game in the NHL, and you're like, gods,
- 37:08Speaker 5: this is the greatest thing in the world. This is
- 37:10Speaker 5: so cool. And then you get through, you know, three
- 37:12Speaker 5: or four seasons, and you kind of get beat up
- 37:14Speaker 5: and you're kind of dragging a little bit, and you
- 37:15Speaker 5: forget to remind yourself how lucky you are to play
- 37:18Speaker 5: well that five straight years after I had the brain surgery.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Those were all icing on the cake type of days.
- 37:25Speaker 5: Every day I went to the rink, I played it
- 37:27Speaker 5: and thought of it as my last and first game
- 37:30Speaker 5: and so I had a different attitude about being able
- 37:33Speaker 5: to play. How fortunate I was. So that's the way
- 37:36Speaker 5: I looked at that. So I was lucky. If I
- 37:39Speaker 5: look back now, and I think I had through four
- 37:43Speaker 5: children at the time, and I say, why would I
- 37:46Speaker 5: have done that? That's a really good question. I still
- 37:49Speaker 5: questioned myself for trying to come back. I could have just,
- 37:52Speaker 5: you know, rode off and said, hey, I'm in, I'm good,
- 37:54Speaker 5: I got to play in the NHL. Let's go be
- 37:56Speaker 5: a dad. But hockey does that to you. I mean,
- 37:59Speaker 5: the love of the game and be part of a team.
- 38:01Speaker 5: It's hard to walk away. It's hard to say no.
- 38:04Speaker 5: And then when one doctor said, you know, I think
- 38:05Speaker 5: you can play, I said, we all white, maybe I
- 38:08Speaker 5: could play again. You know, that just perked up that excitement,
- 38:11Speaker 5: and and I went down that path. And obviously now
- 38:14Speaker 5: I'm very grateful that I did. And uh, but but
- 38:18Speaker 5: it was it was, you know, the six months of
- 38:21Speaker 5: every night going to bed going gosh, do I do
- 38:24Speaker 5: this or do I not do this type of thing?
- 38:26Speaker 5: But everything worked out. Knock on wood, I Uh, I
- 38:30Speaker 5: don't think I did any more damage to my head
- 38:32Speaker 5: in those five years.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Still sharp as a whip, sharp.
- 38:35Speaker 1: As a whip.
- 38:36Speaker 5: Thanks, I think of myself sharp as a whip.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, like you know that that's such a
- 38:42Speaker 3: great story. I think because it's so hard to make
- 38:45Speaker 3: the NHL, but it's so incredibly tough and even tougher
- 38:48Speaker 3: to stay in the NHL, or once you kind of
- 38:51Speaker 3: take a step back come back in. I'd back surgery
- 38:53Speaker 3: and thought I wasn't going to be able to skate again,
- 38:56Speaker 3: and similar to you, the doctors had surgery and it
- 38:59Speaker 3: was like after that, your eyes are a little bit
- 39:02Speaker 3: open because the grind of the game doesn't seem so bad.
- 39:04Speaker 3: So you know, that's amazing, and then you end up
- 39:07Speaker 3: in San Jose. But talk a little bit about San Jose.
- 39:10Speaker 3: I mean the cast of characters you had there. You're
- 39:12Speaker 3: at the cow Palace, Brandy Han, Drew Mnde on the mic,
- 39:16Speaker 3: you had, you had Owen Nolan, you know, Mika kippersof Nabakov.
- 39:20Speaker 3: You had Patrick Marlow in his first year. You know,
- 39:23Speaker 3: Mike reached Like what if Darryl Sutter is your head coach? Like,
- 39:26Speaker 3: talk about those memories because you say how how you
- 39:29Speaker 3: enjoyed it so much, but you were you know, being
- 39:31Speaker 3: at the start of a franchise, and you guys, the
- 39:34Speaker 3: rink was in San Francisco and at the Cow Palace, Like,
- 39:38Speaker 3: how amazing were those memories for you?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Playing in San Jose?
- 39:41Speaker 5: It was great, great fans. The one bonus thing I
- 39:44Speaker 5: got too, I was college teammates with Gary Shooter. We
- 39:49Speaker 5: both came in together at the University of Wisconsin in
- 39:52Speaker 5: nineteen eighty three, and Suits and I were buddies. We
- 39:55Speaker 5: played on a few US teams along the way, but
- 39:59Speaker 5: but we got reconnected in San Jose and he became
- 40:02Speaker 5: roommates my last four years of San Jose. So to
- 40:06Speaker 5: reconnect with one of your old buddies and go through
- 40:09Speaker 5: the you know, your last few years together was really
- 40:11Speaker 5: cool for me because you know, he's one of those
- 40:14Speaker 5: players that you play with and you respect so much
- 40:17Speaker 5: as a teammate, and you wonder why, you know, I
- 40:20Speaker 5: still wonder why he's not in the Hall of Fame.
- 40:22Speaker 5: I gotta be honest with you. I thought he was
- 40:24Speaker 5: as a player, one of those players that just made
- 40:27Speaker 5: everybody better, just quietly came into the room, quietly did
- 40:31Speaker 5: his thing, quietly produced and was a warrior. It was
- 40:36Speaker 5: an absolute warrior and so just to reconnect with him
- 40:39Speaker 5: for those last four years mental out. You mentioned Patty
- 40:41Speaker 5: Marlowe and Marco Stern. With some young guys coming in
- 40:44Speaker 5: as an older player, there's the difference. When I got
- 40:47Speaker 5: to San Jose, I became somewhat of an older player,
- 40:51Speaker 5: and was I going to be the guy that was
- 40:53Speaker 5: going to be oh, man, these guys are taking my
- 40:54Speaker 5: job type of mentality, or was I going to be
- 40:57Speaker 5: come on, guys, I'm going to help you along the way.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Because a lot of guys helped me along the way
- 41:01Speaker 5: when I was a young player, and that's what I
- 41:03Speaker 5: learned about. When you find those great teammates and those
- 41:07Speaker 5: great veteran players, you know, they can either turn on
- 41:11Speaker 5: you and make you feel like, oh my gosh, this
- 41:14Speaker 5: isn't much fun, or they can say an embrace. Chris Nyland,
- 41:18Speaker 5: Kelly Kissy, O'Brien, mullins, some guys Ron Greschner when I
- 41:22Speaker 5: was in New York did that for me, John Van Biezick.
- 41:25Speaker 5: They made me feel special as a young player, and
- 41:27Speaker 5: I thought that it was my time now to help
- 41:30Speaker 5: the younger guys in San Jose. So I watched those
- 41:32Speaker 5: guys take my job, and I and I patted them
- 41:35Speaker 5: on the back saying, you guys deserve it. You know,
- 41:36Speaker 5: I'll keep pushing you and I'll keep staying ready to
- 41:39Speaker 5: help it any way I can. But man, this is fun.
- 41:42Speaker 5: And you watch Marlowe accomplish, you know, and break Gordy
- 41:44Speaker 5: House record, you know, then you're cheering for him and
- 41:47Speaker 5: you're giving them how you had him JD. So you
- 41:50Speaker 5: know what he is about. And so so you got
- 41:53Speaker 5: to adjust as an older player to recognize you're you know,
- 41:58Speaker 5: the younger guys that are coming in that are that
- 42:00Speaker 5: have the energy, that have more skill. It's just the
- 42:03Speaker 5: way it evolved. The younger kids are more skilled and
- 42:06Speaker 5: talented as you move along, and you got to accept that,
- 42:10Speaker 5: and you've got to find a new role, and you've
- 42:11Speaker 5: got to understand that some of the things that you
- 42:14Speaker 5: like to do as part of a team are going
- 42:15Speaker 5: to be taken away and given to others. And if
- 42:17Speaker 5: you can do that, you can survive. And I think
- 42:19Speaker 5: that was an important thing that some of the older
- 42:21Speaker 5: players taught me when I was young.
- 42:24Speaker 4: On that San Jose team, Tony, your roommate was head
- 42:28Speaker 4: coach Marco Sturm from the Boston Bruins, right, So I mean, yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 4: was there was there some sex success from that season.
- 42:38Speaker 2: There's a lot of a lot of sex.
- 42:41Speaker 5: That's what we edited here.
- 42:43Speaker 2: That's sure we edit here.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Was from having Marco Sturm as your roommate.
- 42:49Speaker 5: That's a great one. This is what you got to
- 42:51Speaker 5: ask him, because he gives me me crap about this still.
- 42:54Speaker 5: He said, when we were first rooming together playing an
- 42:57Speaker 5: exhibition game, I think we were down in San Diego
- 42:59Speaker 5: playing one of those off site games. And he says,
- 43:02Speaker 5: he's waking up from his nap. He looks over and
- 43:05Speaker 5: I'm stretching. I'm up standing up in the corner of
- 43:07Speaker 5: my leg, behind my back, pulling, stretching, doing all these
- 43:09Speaker 5: little things. And and he uh, he says that's his
- 43:13Speaker 5: first memory of me of as we were getting uh,
- 43:16Speaker 5: you know, supposed to be getting our nap and I'm
- 43:18Speaker 5: I'm in the corner of the room stretching. That's what
- 43:20Speaker 5: he remembers of. But what a great year Marco Sturm
- 43:24Speaker 5: had in Boston. Uh, it's I'm not surprised by that.
- 43:27Speaker 5: He almost won a gold medal out of nowhere. Back
- 43:30Speaker 5: in the Olympics when he coached Germany. And I don't
- 43:34Speaker 5: know what Russia was called at that time. What was
- 43:36Speaker 5: the name of it. What did they name him in
- 43:38Speaker 5: the Olympic year when they were had that violation, oh
- 43:40Speaker 5: something whatever they called.
- 43:42Speaker 4: The Olympic Athletes of or something like that.
- 43:46Speaker 5: Yeah, But anyhow, he he almost pulled the upset of
- 43:49Speaker 5: all upsets. It would have been as big as the
- 43:51Speaker 5: nineteen eighty US upset. He was just a minute away
- 43:54Speaker 5: from from beating beating him and winning the gold medal.
- 43:57Speaker 5: So he's a heck of a person and teammate, which
- 44:00Speaker 5: you know, uh And and as a coach, he certainly
- 44:03Speaker 5: backed up what what he's capable of doing as a
- 44:05Speaker 5: head coach.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Any chance to ask a question about Chris Kelley is
- 44:09Speaker 1: I'm going to take it. Yeah, I'm unbelievable player. I
- 44:12Speaker 1: think the greatest defenseman in US hockey history. Legendary fitness
- 44:16Speaker 1: regime could go out till two am. He's back in
- 44:18Speaker 1: the morning on the bike getting in the sauna. You're
- 44:20Speaker 1: an assistant with an Tony and Detroit. What was Chillie
- 44:23Speaker 1: like as a coach?
- 44:25Speaker 5: Unbelievable from the standpoint, I never thought of him as
- 44:28Speaker 5: a coach, but to work with the young players his
- 44:32Speaker 5: first of all, his love for the game goes to
- 44:36Speaker 5: that next level. You know, we talk about Sydney Crosby
- 44:39Speaker 5: now jumping over and you know, season ends and he
- 44:41Speaker 5: tells the trainers, hey, pack my bag, I might go
- 44:44Speaker 5: play for a team Canada. And they're like, you just
- 44:46Speaker 5: played in the Olympics. You were hurt this year we
- 44:48Speaker 5: made the playoffs. Why would you want to do that?
- 44:50Speaker 5: And Sid's probably answer was because I got a chance
- 44:53Speaker 5: to go play hockey again. That was Chris Chellios. If
- 44:56Speaker 5: there was a rink and there was ice available and
- 44:58Speaker 5: he had his skates in his trunk, which he did carry,
- 45:01Speaker 5: he would pop in and just jump on the ice.
- 45:03Speaker 5: That's how much he loved love the game. So I'm
- 45:06Speaker 5: fortunate enough now Chris is still around. I work with
- 45:08Speaker 5: his daughter on the black Hawk broadcast and Kaylee one
- 45:11Speaker 5: of the greatest teams as a partner and to do
- 45:16Speaker 5: games with, and so I see Chris a lot still.
- 45:18Speaker 5: We coached together on the Olympic team in two thousand
- 45:21Speaker 5: and eighteen. We were on the same staff there. He just,
- 45:27Speaker 5: you know, his love for the game spills over where
- 45:32Speaker 5: people see him and they kind of just perk up
- 45:35Speaker 5: and his ability to help young defensemen and teach him
- 45:38Speaker 5: a few things. It's mostly about competitiveness and that, you know,
- 45:42Speaker 5: that mentality of yet of what you have to have
- 45:45Speaker 5: to compete and perform at that high level as I
- 45:49Speaker 5: think the biggest asset of what he was able to
- 45:53Speaker 5: share with the younger players. And yeah, and Chris, if
- 45:59Speaker 5: you need anything from Chris, and you guys are buddies,
- 46:03Speaker 5: He'll go through the wall for you. That's just one
- 46:05Speaker 5: of those. He's Greek, I'm Italian. Somehow we get along
- 46:09Speaker 5: really well. So must be there must be a connection
- 46:12Speaker 5: between the Greeks and the Italians.
- 46:14Speaker 2: It's that it's that good eating. That's what it is.
- 46:16Speaker 2: It's all that good food.
- 46:17Speaker 3: But you know, you mentioned the Blackhawks, and I love
- 46:20Speaker 3: staying up late on the East Coast watching you do
- 46:23Speaker 3: some analysis after games, and you know they had a
- 46:27Speaker 3: kind of an interesting season, but you know they were competitive,
- 46:31Speaker 3: but then you saw the holes kind of creep in.
- 46:34Speaker 3: What do you think kind of their offseason plan?
- 46:36Speaker 2: Is big? Big offseason for them?
- 46:37Speaker 5: I think yeah, it's really a big I mean they're
- 46:42Speaker 5: picking Forth again, which is nice. Could Stenburg fallow the
- 46:46Speaker 5: fourth and that be the perfect match for fron Del
- 46:48Speaker 5: Frondel is going to be a superstar. You know, we
- 46:51Speaker 5: all know about Connor Bdard and what he can do
- 46:53Speaker 5: that Anton Frondell only played I think nine or ten games,
- 46:57Speaker 5: but when he came over after his good he's in Sweden,
- 47:00Speaker 5: He's a heck of a player, so offensively, now Connor
- 47:03Speaker 5: will have some help, which is important. But I think
- 47:07Speaker 5: with all these assets and all these picks that Kyle
- 47:09Speaker 5: has stocked and brought in, uh, he's got an opportunity
- 47:13Speaker 5: to make a big deal and acquire somebody else that
- 47:16Speaker 5: can have an immediate impact. Like it would be fine
- 47:20Speaker 5: to wait, you know, two or three more years and
- 47:23Speaker 5: let these younger players keep developing. They'll probably mature into
- 47:27Speaker 5: a team that can can compete, you know, to not
- 47:31Speaker 5: just make the playoffs, but be a team that can
- 47:33Speaker 5: push in a few years. But I think there is
- 47:35Speaker 5: a way to kind of accelerate that plan with the couple.
- 47:40Speaker 5: You know, it's going to be big moves. It's going
- 47:42Speaker 5: to have to take two or three players or prospects
- 47:45Speaker 5: in the organization that that can pan out to be good.
- 47:48Speaker 5: But I think there's an immediate return if you if
- 47:51Speaker 5: your there's players available. We all know, there's the names
- 47:54Speaker 5: that have been you know that are kind of out there.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Still do you wait and say, maybe we wait and
- 47:59Speaker 5: see if Connor McDavid is going to be available in
- 48:02Speaker 5: a year or so. Let start, well, I mean, if
- 48:08Speaker 5: you look at it and the way things are going
- 48:11Speaker 5: right now, it's tilting towards you know, he might not
- 48:14Speaker 5: be an oiler forever. And and then you got you know,
- 48:17Speaker 5: Austin Matthews in Toronto, you got you already heard the
- 48:20Speaker 5: Knis rumors. You got Brady Kachuck in Ottawa. And there's
- 48:23Speaker 5: a few other guys that are on that one that
- 48:25Speaker 5: might be a deal that could be had earlier. Do
- 48:29Speaker 5: you try that? And so I think there's gonna be
- 48:31Speaker 5: options for Kyle. There's gonna be options for him, probably
- 48:34Speaker 5: on that fourth pick overall, because there's some really good
- 48:38Speaker 5: defensemen that of Stenberg and mckennagal, you know one two
- 48:42Speaker 5: is you know maybe will happen. So so there is
- 48:46Speaker 5: some options to help the Blackhawks. But go back to that,
- 48:50Speaker 5: think Jeff Blashel did a really good job last year,
- 48:52Speaker 5: but I think that ultimately they got to get some
- 48:56Speaker 5: some some some more. I don't know how you want
- 49:00Speaker 5: mis grit anger. Yeah, they gotta. They gotta become a
- 49:06Speaker 5: meaner team to to in their in their young kids.
- 49:08Speaker 5: And can they grow into that. There's a couple of
- 49:10Speaker 5: kids that probably could, but I think they need some more,
- 49:13Speaker 5: uh physicality.
- 49:16Speaker 2: How's that.
- 49:16Speaker 5: I'll be nice, I'll use the word physicality.
- 49:19Speaker 2: I'll say it. Some balls get in there.
- 49:22Speaker 5: You coach in there for sure?
- 49:28Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go. Yeah, there you go. Not now,
- 49:31Speaker 4: but there you You coached Cole Kaffield at university at
- 49:38Speaker 4: the University of Wisconsin when he won the Hobie Baker
- 49:41Speaker 4: Did you did you foresee him scoring fifty in the
- 49:43Speaker 4: NHL Tony Did you think that this was going to happen?
- 49:47Speaker 5: I did, And I don't mean to say, like I know,
- 49:50Speaker 5: I'm not going to say I told you so. But
- 49:54Speaker 5: I watched him. I learned from him.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Uh.
- 49:57Speaker 5: He was one of those players and I kept This
- 50:00Speaker 5: is how I this is how I knew. I would
- 50:03Speaker 5: ask the goaltenders, I go, can you guys please stop
- 50:05Speaker 5: Cole one of these times so he stops dancing around
- 50:07Speaker 5: the rink and celebrating after every time he shoots on
- 50:09Speaker 5: you guys, you know, in practice and he goes, we can't.
- 50:13Speaker 5: We had no idea where the puck's coming when it
- 50:14Speaker 5: comes off of stick, And so I started to watch
- 50:17Speaker 5: the goalies, you know, try to play as he was shooting,
- 50:20Speaker 5: and he was so deceptive on where the puck came
- 50:24Speaker 5: off as blade that normally, if it came off the toe,
- 50:27Speaker 5: the goaltender knows all he's going. You know, I can
- 50:29Speaker 5: seet a little bit, you know, high glove, because that's
- 50:31Speaker 5: where it's got to go when it comes off a
- 50:33Speaker 5: player stick like that. Cole could deceive that and it
- 50:36Speaker 5: could go low blocker when it looked like for sure
- 50:38Speaker 5: it was going high glove. So that little ability to
- 50:42Speaker 5: be able to disguise his shot coming off as blade,
- 50:45Speaker 5: for me, showed me something that others than that. The
- 50:48Speaker 5: best shooter that I ever played with, I thought was
- 50:51Speaker 5: Joe Sakik, And I'd played with Bret haall different type
- 50:54Speaker 5: of shot. I'd played with some other great great Luke Roboti,
- 50:57Speaker 5: great great goal scores. But you know, Joe sakak had
- 51:00Speaker 5: that little pole drag and he'd always shoot to the
- 51:03Speaker 5: place where the goaltender had the most difficult chance of
- 51:06Speaker 5: getting his pad or blocker over there. And Cole has
- 51:09Speaker 5: that same instinct of knowing where do I shoot that
- 51:13Speaker 5: it's going to be really hard for the goaltender to
- 51:16Speaker 5: make that safe. So I knew he'd be productive. I
- 51:18Speaker 5: knew how competitive he was. You know, I got to
- 51:22Speaker 5: watch him lead to big ten and scoring his first year.
- 51:24Speaker 5: I got to see him make that next step his
- 51:26Speaker 5: next year when he won the Hoby Baker. I watched,
- 51:30Speaker 5: you know, all the little things he did day after
- 51:33Speaker 5: day after day after day to become a better and
- 51:35Speaker 5: more complete player, but also even work on the shooting
- 51:40Speaker 5: and the goal scoring to a different level than I've
- 51:44Speaker 5: ever seen. So yes, I am happy for him. He's
- 51:47Speaker 5: earned it because of the work he's put in. And
- 51:50Speaker 5: you talk about a smiley kid that affects everybody in
- 51:53Speaker 5: the locker room, everybody in the city for that matter,
- 51:56Speaker 5: every hockey fan you turned on the TV. What are
- 51:58Speaker 5: you going to see when you see Cole Coffield. A
- 52:00Speaker 5: big smile on his face and someone that's enjoying what
- 52:03Speaker 5: he's doing. And that's what hockey's all about, and that's
- 52:06Speaker 5: what what he's been able to bring to that franchise
- 52:09Speaker 5: into our league.
- 52:11Speaker 1: A big smile on his face and joying what he's
- 52:12Speaker 1: doing also could be fitting to describe it Tony, Tony,
- 52:15Speaker 1: this is phenomenal stuff. Again, look forward to seeing you
- 52:17Speaker 1: on NHL Network, Angel Work Radio. We've had don He
- 52:21Speaker 1: was very with his answers.
- 52:24Speaker 5: Would be a very very different type of interview, very detailed.
- 52:27Speaker 5: He held him when I'm coaching, Hey, Donnie, what do.
- 52:34Speaker 2: I do here?
- 52:34Speaker 5: I need to run a practice? You have me to
- 52:36Speaker 5: get up a practice? Can you do something to help?
- 52:38Speaker 1: He's gonna let you know he's not gonna get cheated either,
- 52:40Speaker 1: and we'll get came on at some point, so well,
- 52:42Speaker 1: of course came to him.
- 52:43Speaker 5: Yeah. Man, that's a much better interview than both Donnie, and.
- 52:48Speaker 1: We'll get that third gard three. Great stuff, Tonys, Thanks
- 52:51Speaker 1: you guys, Thanks once again to Tony Gronando. He was terrific.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Speaking of terrific, make sure you check out this new
- 53:03Speaker 1: documentary on Netflix. It's called Marty Life is short documentary
- 53:06Speaker 1: about Martin Short, who's had a remarkable career. Proud Canadian
- 53:10Speaker 1: first and foremost Hamilton guy. You know, was obviously made
- 53:13Speaker 1: his bones in Toronto with SCTV, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara,
- 53:17Speaker 1: all those great comedians of that era. He's a guy
- 53:20Speaker 1: who's had a remarkable career in show business because he
- 53:22Speaker 1: never really had a major hit. If you look at
- 53:23Speaker 1: his movies. I said to you Martin short you go
- 53:25Speaker 1: he was great father of the Bride. I'm like, yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 1: supporting role stole the movie. It was not the star.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Most of his starring vehicles didn't work. Three Amigos did
- 53:31Speaker 1: not work. Him and Chevy Chase, Steve mart notable flop.
- 53:34Speaker 1: You know where time people have enjoyed it. But he
- 53:36Speaker 1: said a late career resurgence. Only Murders in the Building
- 53:38Speaker 1: is a genuine hit. With his good friend Steve Martin
- 53:40Speaker 1: still touring together. Those guys do it all the time,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and of course his best friend Eugene Levy. Those guys
- 53:45Speaker 1: stay in touch. Very good revealing documentary just about his life.
- 53:48Speaker 1: And at one point when talking to John mulaney, whom
- 53:50Speaker 1: Millanny is telling you how much they loves Three Amigos
- 53:52Speaker 1: and Martin, swort'z again, but we lost a golden child
- 53:54Speaker 1: that weekend, Like it wasn't a hit. He's a well,
- 53:55Speaker 1: it's a great film. So they worked together on a
- 53:57Speaker 1: Milaniy's sitcom and it didn't work out. Martin Short said
- 53:59Speaker 1: to him, this is show business, John, because the reviews
- 54:01Speaker 1: were terrible and the ratings were awfully. It was ninety
- 54:04Speaker 1: the time. It doesn't work, this is it. We just
- 54:06Speaker 1: move on to the next thing, and it's amazing. Tom
- 54:09Speaker 1: Hanks talking about Martin Short, he goes, that guy is
- 54:11Speaker 1: pure joy like it doesn't matter what it is in life.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Martin Short has the right approach. He's positive mind, overcome
- 54:16Speaker 1: considerable tragedy. At twelve lost his eldest brother, and eighteen
- 54:20Speaker 1: lost his mom. At twenty lost his dad, and he
- 54:22Speaker 1: has said lost has been a big part of his life,
- 54:24Speaker 1: but he's just learned to adapt with it. His beloved
- 54:26Speaker 1: wife who they show great videos of cam Corner videos
- 54:29Speaker 1: and Tom Hanks speaks about her and Steven Spielberg and
- 54:31Speaker 1: wonderful presence. She died ten years ago from cancer. So
- 54:34Speaker 1: this is a guy who's not only very funny, but
- 54:36Speaker 1: he's overcome a lot of tragedy, a lot of trauma
- 54:38Speaker 1: and orders to really inspire generations. And Tally, I know
- 54:41Speaker 1: you've seen it. My favorite part of it. Colin O'Brian
- 54:43Speaker 1: asked him about that year he worked INESNL. Martin Shore
- 54:45Speaker 1: was not a fan of ESNL, just didn't like the
- 54:47Speaker 1: grind of it, the work of it, but he did
- 54:49Speaker 1: it for one year. He asked tick everesl the leave.
- 54:50Speaker 1: He goes, just get me through one year, He's okay.
- 54:52Speaker 1: His best character is Nathan Thurm, who was this incredibly
- 54:55Speaker 1: defensive character, and Conor goes, where'd you come up with
- 54:57Speaker 1: the character? Like everything? He's like, I know that. Don't
- 54:59Speaker 1: you think I don't know that? And he goes there
- 55:00Speaker 1: and I love stories like this. He goes, there was
- 55:02Speaker 1: a makeup artist who would be dabbing your face and
- 55:04Speaker 1: I'd go like, I visitor, she I know that. Don't
- 55:06Speaker 1: you think I don't know that. I'm like, okay, no problem.
- 55:08Speaker 1: He was whatever you'd say. She was so defensive. So
- 55:10Speaker 1: he goes, Harry, shears, like you should do that at SNL.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Like it because she's gonna know. He's like, she's not
- 55:14Speaker 1: gonna know, Just do it. He goes, I started doing
- 55:16Speaker 1: it and people love the character, and he goes, she
- 55:18Speaker 1: didn't find out until literally the rap party. Her assistant
- 55:20Speaker 1: is so drunk and she goes, don't you know what
- 55:22Speaker 1: Marty's doing? Marty's making funny but he's Seingntha he's doing you.
- 55:25Speaker 1: She goes, I know that, don't you think I don't know?
- 55:27Speaker 1: That great documentary?
- 55:32Speaker 2: It was great. I love Martin Short.
- 55:34Speaker 6: It was incredibly compelling how much loss he's had in
- 55:37Speaker 6: his life. His daughter passed away before the film came out,
- 55:41Speaker 6: and Catherine O'Hara, who was in the film, but just
- 55:46Speaker 6: you could see through it all. Like the amount of
- 55:48Speaker 6: home video they have is pretty, uh, pretty impressive because
- 55:51Speaker 6: this guy, he and his wife seem to host every
- 55:54Speaker 6: weekend by the looks of it, you know, and and
- 55:56Speaker 6: documented everything.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Loved it.
- 55:58Speaker 6: I was shocked by the revelation that that Three Amigos.
- 56:02Speaker 1: Was a bomb.
- 56:03Speaker 6: I love that rights to watch a million times, So
- 56:07Speaker 6: that was that was shocking. But yeah, a lot of
- 56:09Speaker 6: fun like you'll laugh, you'll cry. We all love Martin Short.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Jady, your thoughts of Marty Shore. I know you even
- 56:14Speaker 1: seen The Dog.
- 56:15Speaker 2: I mean, Glickman, is that interview.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Jiminy Glick is unbelievable. I'm glad you put that out.
- 56:20Speaker 1: That's probably the funniest ten minutes of the Dog.
- 56:21Speaker 2: It's incredible, But those interviews are so funny.
- 56:26Speaker 1: He talks to Steven Spielger, Stephen, what are you gonna
- 56:28Speaker 1: make the big one.
- 56:29Speaker 7: When I'm really connect with the audience. Frank Frank frug
- 56:37Speaker 7: is incredible Father Pride, and.
- 56:39Speaker 1: He said that part of the joke. Steve Marton's like,
- 56:41Speaker 1: he goes, you can't understand what he's saying. He's like,
- 56:43Speaker 1: but they can understand it. He's like, yeah, Frank, is
- 56:45Speaker 1: that guy's heavily effeminate, crazy act. That's where he's from.
- 56:48Speaker 5: He's just European.
- 56:48Speaker 1: He's just a wedding planner.
- 56:49Speaker 5: We'll figure it out.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Great stuff makes you check it out, all right, Hey,
- 56:53Speaker 1: Porter Nate, Porter Bartone. Unbelievable. This guy's been great so far.
- 56:56Speaker 1: The World Championships of course, made an impact with the
- 56:59Speaker 1: Philadelphia Flyers, and then sick because yeah, I want to
- 57:01Speaker 1: play with him. So it's Sidney Crosby and Macklin celebringing
- 57:04Speaker 1: right now. You know, we've had Dean Everison on telling
- 57:07Speaker 1: us how big the World Championships was for celebrity playing
- 57:10Speaker 1: with Sidney Crossby. Could we see that now furthering Porter
- 57:12Speaker 1: Marton's development?
- 57:14Speaker 4: I mean absolutely. I mean to have the opportunity to
- 57:17Speaker 4: play with sid and all these other good players and
- 57:19Speaker 4: be around him, and you know it just I don't
- 57:21Speaker 4: even think he's playing with him, you know, but you
- 57:23Speaker 4: you're we're with him in the locker room. You see
- 57:25Speaker 4: how they practice, you know, you pick up so many
- 57:27Speaker 4: different little things. I'm sure Macklin did last year, and
- 57:30Speaker 4: you know, Porter Maarton is going to do the same thing.
- 57:32Speaker 4: It's almost kind of funny because Sid's helping the Flyers
- 57:35Speaker 4: right now, making Port Martone better. So but this is
- 57:40Speaker 4: great for him.
- 57:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, just from enemies to wine mates, just
- 57:46Speaker 3: dishing the puck together. Uh yeah, I mean, I love
- 57:49Speaker 3: the World Championship. Sid just showing you he loves the
- 57:52Speaker 3: game so much. Going and you know, stewarding these young kids,
- 57:56Speaker 3: Porter Marton, I mean the futures Bread. There's a lot
- 57:59Speaker 3: of young kids that came in the league this year
- 58:00Speaker 3: that really exceeded expectations.
- 58:02Speaker 2: He's one of them.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Familiar face for women's hockey histories back Manon Reem, the
- 58:07Speaker 1: only woman to play, Yeah, the only woman to play
- 58:11Speaker 1: in an NHL game of any kind. Named the general
- 58:13Speaker 1: manager of the new p w HL team in Detroit,
- 58:17Speaker 1: one of four expansion teams coming to the league. Hamilton's
- 58:20Speaker 1: got a team Vegas. You get a team, and big
- 58:22Speaker 1: one for you San Jose's in Ralm was spent four
- 58:25Speaker 1: years working hockey ops the Kings. Prior to that workload
- 58:27Speaker 1: with the Little Caesars w a program for eleven year olds,
- 58:30Speaker 1: A big ad for the p w HL. Listen, Ja,
- 58:33Speaker 1: they're really smaller the league he women's hockey. They've got
- 58:35Speaker 1: from eight to twelve teams down next season.
- 58:37Speaker 2: That's crazy. Why the hell is Hamilton have a team
- 58:40Speaker 2: dump of a city?
- 58:41Speaker 1: That's why I wanted to mention that because put in
- 58:43Speaker 1: it it's a population of five thousand.
- 58:45Speaker 3: If you like, that's give Montreal two teams. Give Quebec
- 58:52Speaker 3: city a team like team like the big city of
- 58:55Speaker 3: the South video. I'd love to see Phoenix get a
- 58:58Speaker 3: team to Yeah, they're doing a great job building this
- 59:00Speaker 3: and and it's a great product on ice.
- 59:02Speaker 2: It's been really good.
- 59:03Speaker 3: So and o kayome another face, no Layom, another face
- 59:10Speaker 3: ever on the pod every week out.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Just give us a good French name and I want
- 59:13Speaker 1: to go to see a JD could pronounce it.
- 59:15Speaker 2: No Rayom.
- 59:17Speaker 4: It's it's good too. For I love their adding teams
- 59:20Speaker 4: on the West too. You know we got San Jose
- 59:23Speaker 4: now and Vegas. I mean for especially being in California,
- 59:27Speaker 4: like for young women in California, like Vegas is going
- 59:30Speaker 4: to be their team.
- 59:31Speaker 2: So it's it's great in San Jose.
- 59:32Speaker 5: So it's gonna be It's gonna be awesome.
- 59:35Speaker 2: It's just growing the game.
- 59:36Speaker 1: And our last thought is we hand out flowers the
- 59:38Speaker 1: Buffalo sabers nade plenty we'll get this one. Yeah, plenty
- 59:43Speaker 1: of great stories to enjoy this season. They lost to
- 59:48Speaker 1: Montreal Canadians and that rally song. They fired Kevin Adams
- 59:51Speaker 1: as their GM in December fifteenth, they were fourteen fourteen
- 59:54Speaker 1: and four. After that, thirty six, nine and five, finishing
- 59:57Speaker 1: first in the Atlanta Division. They make the playoffs first
- 59:59Speaker 1: time in fifteen years. They went a playoffs for his
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: first time in nineteen years. So rais beer saber to
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: the team and their fans. They got a recent Alex
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Tuck who went pointless with a minus eight against Montreal
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and Peyton krebs Beck Blentson will also be a FRA agent.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Your thoughts on Buffalo date. It's one thing to say, Okay,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: we climbed the mountain, we made the playoffs, we won
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: a round. Now what do you do.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: Do it again? Got to do it again? You got
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: to keep growing. You can't just be one year and
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: fourteen years and then not make the playoffs next year.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: You guys got to do it again. But I think
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: now expectations and then obviously you said it with all
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: the free agents they have a priority is I think
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: you got to try and bring back Alex Tuck. I mean,
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: he's from that area. You know, he's had success there,
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: It's been a good fit. They have a good core
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: group of guys. I think he should be part of it.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: And I think that's a big, uh, a big priority
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: for them moving forward. Is that.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I mean Rasmus Dahlin coming out party almost this season.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: You know, Tage Thompson developed a little more into a
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: veteran leader. You got Josh Doen had a breakout season
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: in So there's a lot to like. A lot of
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: UFAs though, and a lot of question marks I think
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: on the back end for them. You know, they brought
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: in Stanley and Schen two guys they brought in at
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: the deadline. Both guys were scratched, so to me, you know,
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: especially that both guys are scratching the biggest game of
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: the season, so those guys are likely gone. So now
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: you got to fix your decor you got you know,
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: you didn't play Michael Kesslering at all. So I'm assuming
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: they're going to get rid of him or and then
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: that's another guy gone. They have Metsa there, you know,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: and I to me, I think personally, I think they
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: got to move one of those left handed defensemen, maybe
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: owen power, try to get somebody on the right side,
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: try to balance it out a little bit too more
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: because at the end of the day, I think as
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: good of a season they had, I think they should
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: have beat Montreal and they I think they dropped the
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: ball in that a little bit. I thought Abtreal again.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: And it's no knock on Montreal at all, but they
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: had the game, They had a few games firmly in
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: hand that they let slip. And I just think that
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: we'll see what even happens at the coaching edition. Does
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: Lindy Rouff come back.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Well, heavy favor right now, Your boy Lindy rough To
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: win the Jack Adams Award. How about that.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: I would have thought that this exp Does he come
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: back though, or does he retire? I don't know. He's
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: been in the league for one hundred years.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Just one of the Jack Atams. You gotta come back
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: one more if I'm.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Coaching one more and riding around one more. But yeah, so,
