- 0:23SPEAKER_14: I am excited about this one.
- 0:25SPEAKER_14: We have a special guest joining us up top to talk about the World Cup.
- 0:30SPEAKER_14: Marcelo Balboa is with us.
- 0:32SPEAKER_14: He played in three World Cups himself.
- 0:34SPEAKER_14: We're going to hear from Marcelo what he thinks about the upcoming tournament.
- 0:38SPEAKER_14: We're going to be talking to him throughout the World Cup, so it's going to be a recurring thing.
- 0:42SPEAKER_14: Very excited about that.
- 0:43SPEAKER_14: And then we have a priest and a mortician.
- 0:46SPEAKER_14: How about that?
- 0:47SPEAKER_14: That's like the start of a joke.
- 0:48SPEAKER_14: A priest and a mortician walk into a podcast, and what happens?
- 0:52SPEAKER_14: Well, you're going to find out in episode 42.
- 0:54SPEAKER_14: Here we go.
- 0:55SPEAKER_14: All right.
- 0:56SPEAKER_14: Very excited to be joined by Marcelo Balboa.
- 0:59SPEAKER_14: Marcelo, you're a busy man, correspondent for the World Cup.
- 1:03SPEAKER_14: You're working with CBS.
- 1:04SPEAKER_14: I love that you have time for us.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Always make time, my friend, especially when you got Walter Payton in the background.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: You're from Chicago.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: I was born in Chicago.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: So let's go.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: You were.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Where were you born?
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, I'm not even gonna I was born in Cook County because my dad played professional soccer in 66 and 67 for the Chicago Mustangs.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: So I was there for three years and then we moved to Argentina, then California.
- 1:31SPEAKER_14: Oh wow, man, that is a soccer life.
- 1:34SPEAKER_14: And uh you represented us well.
- 1:37SPEAKER_14: You've played in a few World Cups yourself, 1990, 94, and 98.
- 1:42SPEAKER_14: So you must be excited to see the tournament back on American soil.
- 1:46SPEAKER_14: What do you what do you think?
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I know, listen, I'm excited because I never thought after we played in the 94 World Cup that in my lifetime we would probably see a World Cup back in the United States, along with Mexico and Canada.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So listen, it's it's a great opportunity for us because in '94, no one knew who soccer really, really, not a big deal was going on in soccer.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: No one really knew the national team.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: So for us to go from ground, I mean grassroots in '94 from people learning what the World Cup was to 30 plus years later, we've got major league soccer.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: We've got players playing all over the world.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: So now it's our turn to show people how far and how long it's taken us, but how far we've come in in this football that we call the world game.
- 2:32SPEAKER_14: Yeah, you know, I was uh doing a little research on you and I saw your bicycle kick against the okay, all right.
- 2:40SPEAKER_14: Which is uh was a viral moment before there were viral moments.
- 2:44SPEAKER_14: And I love the the look you had.
- 2:46SPEAKER_14: You got the the mullet going.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, it's it's it was a thing in the 90s, man.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: I couldn't, I I couldn't get rid of it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I was more worried about the Pepe LePew mustache, but the the mullet was something that just came out of the blue because I came back from an ACL uh to play in that World Cup, and Boris said, I don't want you playing with your hair.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: If it gets in your face and you're always messing with it, you know, I'm you're not gonna play.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: So I went to a barber, they cut the front short, they cut the sides, it left the back long, and uh there's my 94 mullet.
- 3:22SPEAKER_14: It's back though.
- 3:23SPEAKER_14: The mullet look is back.
- 3:24SPEAKER_14: A lot of kids are rocking that now.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: I tell you what, if I ever if I ever cut this, I'll go them, I'll shave the sides a little bit, I'll keep the mullet for a few weeks.
- 3:32SPEAKER_14: So, what would personally as a player, what what's a World Cup memory that stands out to you?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Um, God, there's there's so many only because when you playing a World Cup is special as it is, but to be able to play in a home World Cup, um I'll go back to the first one against Switzerland.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: When we walked out at the uh Pontiac Silverdome with the roof on it, first game ever played in a roof stadium, and the way that stadium erupted, the way that stadium stood behind a team that they didn't really know, they stood behind a team that they were hoping could do something special.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And uh the goosebumps, man.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: I'm telling you, we walked out and my heart rate was pretty normal because we've walked out in big games.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: But as soon as the national anthem started playing, man, my heart rate went up to 140, 150.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: You can get you start getting emotional because you realize the moment you're in.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: And uh, and and you know, we looked at it as soccer was in our hands.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: We could either make it or break it, but that moment walking out at Detroit was probably one of the most special moments that uh that you can say that doesn't include a victory over Columbia or something like that, but just that emotional feeling uh in front of my mom and dad were there, my brother, everybody was there, so it was a cool feeling.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And what a venue.
- 4:50SPEAKER_14: I mean, probably how many thousands of people are at the Pontiac Silverdale.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I think it was 80.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not 100% sure, but it was but that's probably one of the first.
- 5:01SPEAKER_14: Did you think at all about Andre the Giant versus Hulk Hogan?
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: No, and I love Hulk.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I love Hulk, but no, no.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: That wasn't top of my there wasn't any time to think about anything else but Switzerland at that point.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: What about playing indoor versus uh outdoor?
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Um, a little different, and I'll tell you why, because hot and humid in Detroit, they decided to water the field the day before where there's no ventilation.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: There's no ventilation, so by the time we walked out for warmups, we walked out in our in our hard ground shoes, plastic molds.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And by the time we started warming up, we realized we had a switch into our long studs.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: They were about three-quarters of an inch stud.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: We had to quickly switch our shoes because the moisture didn't evaporate.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So the moisture was in the field and on the grass, and the grass was very wet.
- 5:50SPEAKER_14: You don't often hear three-quarters of an inch and stud in the same sentence.
- 5:54SPEAKER_14: I hear you.
- 5:56SPEAKER_14: The um expectations for the US men's team this year.
- 6:00SPEAKER_14: What what do you think?
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Um, listen, I think everybody now in the United States knows what our Olympic what our Olympic team is, what our World Cup team is.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: We we know what MLS is.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: So we've grown in 30-some odd years to become very knowledgeable and becoming one of the more popular sports in the United States.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: We are, I think, amongst one or two most sold tickets anytime there's a FIFA event overseas or here in the World Cup.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: So the expectation has grown tremendously in this country.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: So I think listening to people and talking to people and myself, quarter final, minimum of a quarterfinal, this team needs to get to.
- 6:42SPEAKER_14: What do you think of the pool that they're in compared to other ones?
- 6:45SPEAKER_14: Do they have a good draw here?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: No, they listen, we're that we're the top-seeded team in that group.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: If you look at the FIFA rankings, we're above everybody else.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: So should we beat Paraguay?
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can beat Paraguay.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Should we beat Australia?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can beat Australia.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Can we beat Turkey?
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can beat them.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: We've already beat them before, except for Turkey.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: They lost last summer.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: But when you look at this group, you're playing at home, you have that home field advantage, you have the ability to have the fans behind you in that energy.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna stick to my expectations are this team to reach a quarterfinal.
- 7:16SPEAKER_14: How do you not overlook a team?
- 7:18SPEAKER_14: When you look at your pool, are you considering everyone in the pool, or are you really just like opponent by opponent?
- 7:24SPEAKER_14: Because I imagine sometimes if you're like, man, we got we got Paraguay, but then if we beat them, we gotta, you know.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: You don't worry about you, you're not worried about Australia yet.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: You're worried about Paraguay.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Because in a World Cup and a big tournament, listen, this is the biggest tournament in the world.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: There's no other besides the Olympics.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Tell me where else you can say you're world champions.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: You can't say that in the NFL.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: You can't say that in Major League Baseball, right?
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: You can't say that in the NBA.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: So this is the biggest tournament in the world.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: The best of the best are here.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: So when you walk out of that stadium and you have that trophy, you are the best.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: You are the world champion.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: So you don't overlook anybody.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: In a World Cup, the first game is the most important game because you got to get a result.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: You got to get a win or you got to get a tie.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: You cannot lose.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: It's a must not lose game that day.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So from there, then you worry about Australia.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Australia, you can open up a little bit more, you can take a chance, and you can go after that game to get the three points.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: But listen, can we beat both of these teams?
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But you take game by game because every game tactically will be different because you'll see Paraguay play four defenders, but you'll see Australia play three when they attack.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: But when they defend, it's a line of five, four midfielders and one forward.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: So every team is different tactically.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: So you can't worry about this here when you've got to get the result here.
- 8:44SPEAKER_14: How are you um getting people into the tent, the soccer tent that maybe are still a little bit, you know, casual fan or they get fired up when the World Cup comes around?
- 8:54SPEAKER_14: Who are the players that we should be excited about?
- 8:56SPEAKER_14: Who are the personalities?
- 8:58SPEAKER_14: Who's kind of the conversation uh of soccer these days?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Um listen, I don't think we have to drag anybody into the tent.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Everybody in the world knows soccer.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Everybody in the world watches soccer.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So I think that the the thing you're trying to do is is hopefully you have an entertaining World Cup.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: You have uh very offensive-minded, you'll have teams that are attacking, there's some goals, and I think that's what we're all looking for.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So when you talk about guys, this is going to be a great World Cup, but also a sad World Cup.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Because as soon as Argentina gets eliminated, that's probably the last time we'll see Messi playing in a World Cup.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: When Portugal gets eliminated, if they don't reach the final, then that's a possibility that we won't see Ronaldo again.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of players you can keep going.
- 9:49SPEAKER_14: Unless you're on Instagram looking at all the thirst trap picks.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: But for us soccer freaks, we'll say that would be the last time.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you're looking at guys like that, you're looking at Neymar, you're looking at Vinnie Jr., you're looking at Harry Kane, what he did at Bayern Munich.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: So you're looking at Vicino from Portugal, so you're looking at a lot of different players.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You want to see what Mbappé can do with France, you know, Dembeli is another one.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: So you're looking at guys in different teams that you they're already world stars.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: You're looking at Norway with Holland.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, they didn't make the last World Cup.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: This one he's he's informed.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: This is a dangerous team.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: This is one of the dark horses.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: So I think there's a lot of interesting, uh interesting teams.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I just saw Kura Sau the other day.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: They were arriving in the United States, they had the music on, they're dancing as they're getting off the plane, they're enjoying themselves, they're enjoying their atmosphere because let's be honest, statistically, if you look at if we're gonna be a better, their odds are very low to win a game, to score a goal, or to get out of the group.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So they're gonna enjoy every moment.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: So I think this World Cup, that's why it's gonna be interesting.
- 10:55SPEAKER_14: Do you have any other dark horses?
- 10:56SPEAKER_14: Like who are the teams that are on your radar?
- 10:59SPEAKER_14: You mentioned the United States going to a quarterfinal.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_14: Who else do you see in the mix?
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Um, you know what?
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Everybody keeps talking about Mexico only because Mexico's playing at home.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: If Mexico wins the group, the next round game is in Mexico.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: So they won't have to travel to the United States yet.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: I look at Colombia.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Colombia, you know, they reached the Las Copa Medica, they lost to Argentina.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: So you're looking at teams like that's Japan is being thrown out there a few times now, of could be a dark horse.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Norway's been thrown out there as a dark horse.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: So, you know, somebody threw out Ivory Coast.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of teams right now.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: I I don't think there's one team in this World Cup.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: The most, and when we talk about favorite teams, everybody, if you were to take a poll, I would say seven out of ten, would say Spain right now.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Spain and France are probably the deepest teams in this tournament.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: With if they let's say they get lucky enough and not have any injuries, those two teams are probably the two favorites right now.
- 11:56SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it's gonna be uh it's gonna be great.
- 11:58SPEAKER_14: It's uh gonna be underway when we air this episode.
- 12:01SPEAKER_14: We'll just be starting the tournament.
- 12:02SPEAKER_14: Are there some early round games that are a must-watch?
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I think right now, the first one you do you want to see Mexico and South Africa.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: That's the first game.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: You want to see how Mexico plays at home.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think the other game, when you're looking at key games, is the U.S.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: versus Paraguay.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: I think those are some of some of the key games right now that people are interested in watching, only because we're all interested to see Mexico's kind of been up and down, up and down.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: They're having a turnover of different generations of players.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: The U.S.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: has been called the golden generation.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: People want to see if the if the U.S.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: with Pochetino can can put it together and make a special run.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: So I think when you start looking the first few days, those are probably the first two games that people be interested in watching.
- 12:47SPEAKER_14: Does our team, our current team, remind you of any of the teams that you played on?
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: No, not even close.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Not even close because of the advantage these young men have.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Listen, when I played, there was no professional leagues, and no one in hell was going to take a chance on an American.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna spend a million dollars on an American player.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Not even happening.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: So we didn't get an opportunity until after 94.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: After we played in the World Cup and we beat Columbia and we showed some things, all of a sudden we started getting a few phone, not a lot, but we got a few phone calls that other coaches were interested, other leagues were interested in American players.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Now, scouts from Europe come to the United States and come to our academy tournaments and are already starting to scout the 14, the 15, the 16-year-olds.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: That was unheard of in the 90s.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: So we we've come a long way in 30 plus years.
- 13:39SPEAKER_14: Yeah, but you set the table for all these guys and uh really.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: We set a found we set a foundation.
- 13:44SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: We our goal was to set a solid foundation in '94 and let the next generation keep building on it.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And listen, we've only had one hiccup.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: We've had one hiccup, and it's the biggest failure in U.S.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: soccer history, and that was 2018 when they didn't qualify for the World Cup.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: That was a huge setback for us as a country who wanted to keep developing in soccer.
- 14:08SPEAKER_14: It sounds like a real family that you guys are really uh involved.
- 14:12SPEAKER_14: And and you say you said uh you know, mentioned sent the table.
- 14:15SPEAKER_14: Look at all the mullets out there.
- 14:18SPEAKER_14: You've definitely had an influence.
- 14:20SPEAKER_14: And we talked a little bit off.
- 14:21SPEAKER_14: You mentioned being born in Chicago.
- 14:23SPEAKER_14: Are you a Chicago fan at all?
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Buddy, I am.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I am I am not one of those guys that was, and I wasn't there very long, but I'm I'm a very loyal sports fan.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: So yes, I follow my bears.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, I follow my cubs, so very, very much so.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: All right, all right, very cool.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I'm not a White Sox guy.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: My since I was a kid, my dad uh, you know, cubs all the time, and the bears back in the old days with the fridge and all those guys.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: So it was uh just you know blue, baby, blue, blue and orange.
- 14:54SPEAKER_14: Oh, I love it, man.
- 14:55SPEAKER_14: And uh and I appreciate you joining us.
- 14:57SPEAKER_14: We're gonna talk again, right?
- 14:58SPEAKER_14: We're gonna get together throughout the tournament.
- 15:00SPEAKER_14: You're gonna be too much.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: We will get together, yes.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Between my schedule at CBS, we will find time to have a soccer conversation, my friend.
- 15:08SPEAKER_14: I appreciate it very much.
- 15:09SPEAKER_14: And I know that um the closest game that we can get to, Chicago-wise, is Kansas City.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:14SPEAKER_14: You think that's worth the trip?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Every game, let me tell you right now.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: The soccer culture in this country right now is great.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: It is going to get so much better when the Brazilians are dancing and doing their sambas.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: The Argentines and their fans are screaming and yelling and singing and doing the tango.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: So everywhere you can catch a game, anywhere you can go to a fan fest, even if you can't go to the game and the stadium because it's sold out.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Outside, they have fan fests.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: It is a blast.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: If you can't do that, then find a local bar.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: If the Germans are playing, go to a German bar.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Go wherever the fans are.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: You will have such a freaking blast enjoying the different cultures in this country for a month.
- 15:54SPEAKER_14: Yeah, and we don't have to watch in the middle of the night like we usually do.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Hallelujah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it's gonna be a party, man.
- 16:00SPEAKER_14: Yeah, look forward to it.
- 16:01SPEAKER_14: I I gotta say, I went to a World Cup game in '94 at Soldier Field, Bulgaria, Greece.
- 16:06SPEAKER_14: And what I remember most is the outdoor party.
- 16:10SPEAKER_14: And you know what's back is hacky sack.
- 16:12SPEAKER_14: Oh, it's back everybody was doing in the parking lot in '94.
- 16:17SPEAKER_14: And now my kids are getting hacky sacks.
- 16:19SPEAKER_14: Did you ever hacky sack?
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: It was very frustrating because it was easy to juggle a soccer ball, but I couldn't juggle that damn little sandbag, man.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: It was not easy.
- 16:29SPEAKER_14: It is not easy.
- 16:31SPEAKER_14: Well, Marcelo, I appreciate it, man.
- 16:32SPEAKER_14: I know you're gonna be uh diving in.
- 16:34SPEAKER_14: You got a lot going on.
- 16:35SPEAKER_14: Good luck.
- 16:36SPEAKER_14: Enjoy the games, and uh, we're gonna check in with you soon.
- 16:39SPEAKER_14: Uh, and I'm looking forward to that.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Thank you, my friend.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I look forward to chatting with you again.
- 16:44SPEAKER_14: All right, take care.

- 17:36SPEAKER_14: Is that what we say?
- 17:38SPEAKER_14: We have Father Tom Hurley with us, and we also have Tom Curley, who runs Curly Funeral Home, Mortician, Undertaker.
- 17:47SPEAKER_14: What's what's the go-to title?
- 17:49SPEAKER_14: Funeral director?
- 17:51SPEAKER_14: All of them.
- 17:51SPEAKER_14: All of them apply.
- 17:52SPEAKER_14: All of them.
- 17:53SPEAKER_14: And of course, Dwayne Kennedy here.
- 17:55SPEAKER_14: Guys, thanks for being here.
- 17:57SPEAKER_14: You you came in together, you drove together?
- 17:58SPEAKER_14: We did.
- 17:59SPEAKER_14: Hearse?
- 18:00SPEAKER_14: No, no hurry.
- 18:00SPEAKER_14: No, no hearst.
- 18:02SPEAKER_14: Can't find parking for the first time.
- 18:04SPEAKER_14: You can lay down.
- 18:07SPEAKER_14: Do you ever take that thing out for uh my friends have tried.
- 18:13SPEAKER_14: They want me to.
- 18:14SPEAKER_14: We can't do that.
- 18:15SPEAKER_14: We were talking about um I don't you probably didn't watch the show Jackass, maybe.
- 18:19SPEAKER_14: You've seen highlights, Johnny Knoxville.
- 18:22SPEAKER_14: I mean, he's gone on to have a legitimate career, but they had a gag they did where they had a hearse and they had a uh coffin at the back and they'd peel around a corner and the coffin would fall out on the street.
- 18:35SPEAKER_14: He's had that happen.
- 18:37SPEAKER_14: Yeah, I I get some calls.
- 18:39SPEAKER_14: There'd be some calls.
- 18:40SPEAKER_14: Has there been any um mishaps, odd occurrences, things like oh my gosh, how did that there's none that the public knows about.
- 18:49SPEAKER_14: All right, yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_14: So that's why we're here.
- 18:50SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_09: Luckily, nothing like that.
- 18:54SPEAKER_09: Nothing like that.
- 18:55SPEAKER_09: No, but behind the scenes, there's always something that happens that you gotta adjust to.
- 19:00SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah, it happens.
- 19:01SPEAKER_14: Yeah, these got you gotta be like uh so many like rumors about your business.
- 19:07SPEAKER_14: Because there's an intrigue.
- 19:08SPEAKER_14: I don't know if you call it a morbid curiosity or whatever it might be.
- 19:12SPEAKER_14: I have that.
- 19:13SPEAKER_14: You know, I think a lot of people do, um, especially our neighborhood, it's a big part of our life, the Irish Catholic existence.
- 19:20SPEAKER_14: You're going to wakes, you're going to funerals, and it's always like in the back of your mind, like, what is that really?
- 19:26SPEAKER_14: What is that really like?
- 19:27SPEAKER_14: So you've been in this business for a long time.
- 19:29SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I grew up in it, so I'm fourth generation.
- 19:32SPEAKER_09: My great-grandfather started it.
- 19:33SPEAKER_09: So started out in Canaryville and then St.
- 19:36SPEAKER_09: Sabina's and then St.
- 19:37SPEAKER_09: Dennis and now in Chicago Ridge.
- 19:39SPEAKER_09: And uh yeah, we we grew up living above our funeral.
- 19:42SPEAKER_09: So you lived above it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's like a TV show.
- 19:46SPEAKER_09: So uh plenty of sleep.
- 19:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah, plenty of sleep.
- 19:49SPEAKER_09: But uh the customers aren't making any noise.
- 19:52SPEAKER_09: So you know, probably we were the ones making the noise.
- 19:54SPEAKER_09: You know, there were uh my mom and dad and seven kids upstairs and we were the I tell people we were the cheap labor.
- 20:01SPEAKER_09: So whenever the wakes were over, my dad would ring the bells.
- 20:03SPEAKER_09: It was just a small, kind of small operation with my dad and really nobody else.
- 20:08SPEAKER_09: So he'd ring the bells and the wakes were over, and we'd all have to go downstairs and do our jobs, you know, clean the ashtrays.
- 20:14SPEAKER_09: The smoking room was the big room when we were growing up, so vacuum, all that stuff.
- 20:18SPEAKER_09: So it was totally normal for me.
- 20:20SPEAKER_09: So when I got married and we built this funeral home, you know, there's an apartment upstairs.
- 20:25SPEAKER_09: And my wife said that's all good and great, but we're living in a house.
- 20:30SPEAKER_09: This is this is normal for you and no one else.
- 20:32SPEAKER_09: You know, this is not what people think are normal.
- 20:35SPEAKER_14: But when you had buddies over, like if you have friends over, they they probably were like, Can we sneak down there?
- 20:39SPEAKER_14: Can we go?
- 20:40SPEAKER_14: So we were always like that.
- 20:42SPEAKER_09: We were always down there playing playing hide go seek, all that stuff like that.
- 20:47SPEAKER_09: And it was it was normal for my friends too to hang out down there.
- 20:50SPEAKER_09: And my dad would always say, I'll never forget it, uh, because there was my mom upstairs and my five sisters and my brother.
- 20:57SPEAKER_09: And he would say, Listen, he goes down here, no one's gonna hurt you.
- 21:01SPEAKER_09: He goes upstairs, they'll hurt you.
- 21:03SPEAKER_09: So he was like, he was like, I would stay down here if I were you.
- 21:06SPEAKER_09: And he wasn't wrong.
- 21:07SPEAKER_09: So we were always hanging out downstairs in the funeral, just there may be a body there.
- 21:12SPEAKER_09: There may be Oh, yeah, there usually was.
- 21:15SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_09: But it wasn't, I don't know.
- 21:19SPEAKER_09: It was it was because it was so I I grew up and it was normal for me.
- 21:22SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_14: And it's not for most people, you know.
- 21:25SPEAKER_14: No, it's not.
- 21:25SPEAKER_14: And then we all have heard things, so I kind of want to cut through some stuff.
- 21:29SPEAKER_14: Right.
- 21:29SPEAKER_14: Because you have heard that they can make noises, a dead body can make a noise, it can make a movement.
- 21:36SPEAKER_14: Have you experienced anything like this?
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: What's old man Garrison doing in the paper?
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: I thought he passed three weeks ago.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: This is pretty good.
- 21:54SPEAKER_09: The uh they can make some sounds if you just because the air going.
- 22:00SPEAKER_09: Through the lungs.
- 22:01SPEAKER_09: If you move a body in a certain way, uh, you know, um, shortly after it pass it it can't like you hold up, but it's just like air going through a vocal cord.
- 22:09SPEAKER_09: No, there's no the movement thing is uh is a total fallacy.
- 22:13SPEAKER_14: Yeah, they don't move.
- 22:14SPEAKER_14: So there's no no movement, no sitting up, no I just read something the other day about that.
- 22:20SPEAKER_18: They said something about like like muscles contract or something happens in the and a body could sit up.
- 22:25SPEAKER_18: No, no, 100%.
- 22:27SPEAKER_09: No, and it and if if they can't, I I've never seen it, but we've been doing this a long time.
- 22:32SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I I can't I can't speak to that.
- 22:35SPEAKER_14: Well, it is like I said, a big part of our culture, and um it's changed over the years.
- 22:40SPEAKER_14: I can remember two-day, two-night wakes.
- 22:42SPEAKER_14: Yeah, you know.
- 22:43SPEAKER_14: Um nowadays they seem more personal.
- 22:46SPEAKER_14: People are bringing in personal effects, pictures, video, a lot more of that.
- 22:51SPEAKER_14: Yeah, they bury people with items, memorable items.
- 22:55SPEAKER_14: I saw a guy um with a remote, a TV remote control in his uh in his casket.
- 23:01SPEAKER_14: Right, right?
- 23:02SPEAKER_14: I saw a guy with dice.
- 23:04SPEAKER_14: They put dice in his hands.
- 23:05SPEAKER_14: Oh, yeah, all sorts of things.
- 23:06SPEAKER_14: So like what are the strange have you is like there's something stick out?
- 23:10SPEAKER_14: Like uh what's the oddest thing you've seen?
- 23:13SPEAKER_14: Well, uh I gotta be careful what I say because I don't wanna there's no names.
- 23:18SPEAKER_14: No, right, right.
- 23:19SPEAKER_14: And by the way, the guy that had with the had the remote was buried in like zuubas.
- 23:22SPEAKER_14: Oh remember the zuubas, like the sweatpants?
- 23:25SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:25SPEAKER_14: Like I'm okay, casual afterlife.
- 23:29SPEAKER_06: Casual entry into the pearly gates.
- 23:31SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 23:32SPEAKER_09: Uh yeah, so to your point, back when there were two-day wakes, we were young when that was still kind of going on.
- 23:39SPEAKER_09: We're similar ages, and uh and then my mom, my mom passed when uh I was a senior in high school, and that was kind of when like the pictures started a little bit, and my dad was totally old school, he's against all that stuff.
- 23:52SPEAKER_09: And we had two chapels down in the funeral hall, and my sisters all wanted a bunch of pictures of my mom, and my dad said, Absolutely not, you know, we don't do pictures, you know.
- 24:01SPEAKER_09: Your mom said, That's it.
- 24:02SPEAKER_18: What was his issue against it?
- 24:04SPEAKER_09: He was just old school, he just didn't think it was respectful.
- 24:07SPEAKER_09: Oh, you're making kind of a show out of it.
- 24:10SPEAKER_09: And he was a great guy.
- 24:11SPEAKER_09: He just said, No, no pictures.
- 24:12SPEAKER_09: He just and he was you know, he didn't argue with them, but they they argued with him, and uh and there was a big fight in the kitchen and screaming and yelling, and then finally he said, Fine, we can have pictures.
- 24:21SPEAKER_09: He goes, But the pictures are in this chapel and your mom's in this chapel.
- 24:25SPEAKER_09: So if you want to go see your pictures, you have to go in the other chapel.
- 24:27SPEAKER_09: Oh man.
- 24:27SPEAKER_09: All right, yeah, yeah.
- 24:28SPEAKER_09: And you know, now it's uh it's super common.
- 24:30SPEAKER_09: It's I think it's great.
- 24:32SPEAKER_09: You know, it's great to personalize it like that.
- 24:34SPEAKER_14: Um I think everyone appreciates it.
- 24:36SPEAKER_14: Definitely, and it makes it easier to have a conversation when you get to the moment where you have to pay your respects and speak to the family.
- 24:45SPEAKER_09: People like looking to the pictures and I'd rather look at the pictures than the body.
- 24:48SPEAKER_18: Yeah, right.
- 24:49SPEAKER_18: Yeah, no, the viewing.
- 24:51SPEAKER_18: No thank you.
- 24:53SPEAKER_18: I'll take your word for that.
- 24:55SPEAKER_09: So I'll tell you one story that's uh I gotta be careful, but it's not what was in the casket.
- 25:02SPEAKER_09: This is one this is one of the crazier ones.
- 25:04SPEAKER_09: It was fairly recent last few years.
- 25:06SPEAKER_09: That was it was what wasn't in the casket.
- 25:09SPEAKER_09: Uh a family came in, and uh the the gentleman was a nudist.
- 25:16SPEAKER_09: So they I'm not gonna say names, but uh not gonna say names, but one nudist.
- 25:24SPEAKER_14: Yeah, and I and I hope they're not listening or watching.
- 25:27SPEAKER_14: But uh must have gone through a lot of makeup.
- 25:28SPEAKER_09: So they so they wanted him, they wanted him nude.
- 25:35SPEAKER_09: No and uh and and they said they sat down and they said uh they go, you know, so and so we have to tell you he was a nudist.
- 25:44SPEAKER_09: And when we when we took him in our care, he he he had no clothes on, and that happened sometimes.
- 25:48SPEAKER_09: But when when they came in, they said, listen, so-and-so, we had to tell you he was a nudist, so we have a question.
- 25:54SPEAKER_09: And right away we said, absolutely not.
- 25:56SPEAKER_09: And they said, You don't know what we're gonna ask.
- 25:58SPEAKER_09: We go, I think we know what you're gonna ask.
- 26:00SPEAKER_09: You know, if he was a nudist, you want him, you want him laid out nude, right?
- 26:03SPEAKER_09: They go, Yeah, he was he never wore clothes.
- 26:05SPEAKER_09: So we said, We're not doing that.
- 26:07SPEAKER_09: They say, Well, is there is there a law against it?
- 26:09SPEAKER_09: I go, I don't know if there's a law against it, but we're just not we can we can't have people walking in and and seeing this, you know.
- 26:15SPEAKER_09: So um they said, Well we have a problem, we have we gotta figure this out.
- 26:19SPEAKER_09: So we're talking back and forth, and I said, We just we just can't have we gotta have some clothes on this guy, and uh so uh at least a sock.
- 26:29SPEAKER_09: No some point.
- 26:35SPEAKER_09: So uh so then we decided, hey, listen, how about this?
- 26:39SPEAKER_09: We bring some clothes in for him, we we we have them clothed, and then um when everyone's gone, we take his jerseys off, take clothes off, and then we'll we'll bury him with no clothes on.
- 26:51SPEAKER_09: They go, okay, we can do that.
- 26:53SPEAKER_09: So so we did it.
- 26:54SPEAKER_14: So really oh my gosh.
- 26:56SPEAKER_14: And does the family uh disrobe him or is that?
- 26:59SPEAKER_09: No, we did, but we said if you want to come back and make sure we did this, you can come on back in the room, but we're doing it right now.
- 27:05SPEAKER_09: Just give us five, ten minutes and we'll be good.
- 27:07SPEAKER_09: Wow.
- 27:09SPEAKER_07: Was that a I mean you've never had anything like that before.
- 27:12SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah, that was it's it's like every time you think we've seen everything, something comes up.
- 27:16SPEAKER_09: We say, Oh, that's that's a first, you know.
- 27:18SPEAKER_14: It's got to be against I don't know, it would be maybe be against our religion.
- 27:22SPEAKER_14: Is that can Catholics be buried naked?
- 27:25SPEAKER_14: Come on.
- 27:27SPEAKER_14: Can they?
- 27:28SPEAKER_14: I mean, they come into the world naked.
- 27:30SPEAKER_14: Yeah, I guess.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: Because it is no law.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: You take me now.
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I can't even imagine.
- 27:41SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 27:42SPEAKER_07: I mean, are you asking if you're being serious asking me that?
- 27:44SPEAKER_07: I I I mean, our belief, right?
- 27:47SPEAKER_07: I mean, the reason we put a Paul, uh, a white garment over the casket is because we believe that you know the baptismal garment is the way we're gonna enter eternal life in white, in a white garment.
- 27:59SPEAKER_07: So yeah, he'd have to have a I mean if he was Christian, he was baptized.
- 28:04SPEAKER_07: Did did you ask?
- 28:05SPEAKER_07: We didn't do that.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: We just said the builder coming up.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: He's laying the book next to the body.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Hey, by the way, what religion St.
- 28:19SPEAKER_09: Peter might be saying, hey, wait, well, wait a minute.
- 28:23SPEAKER_09: So I'm gonna head into St.
- 28:24SPEAKER_09: Peter one day when I get up there, Blake Time.
- 28:26SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, but you can't send this guy up here yet his birthday suit.
- 28:29SPEAKER_14: So we got the uh wow hurly curly combo here, which I love, and you guys have worked together.
- 28:35SPEAKER_14: Now, this is where you come in together, you have the the funerals, right?
- 28:39SPEAKER_14: I mean, that's gotta be And we intersect a lot, yes.
- 28:43SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_14: So what is the relationship between a priest and a and a funeral director?
- 28:49SPEAKER_07: I yeah, I mean we have a lot of interaction.
- 28:52SPEAKER_07: I mean, Tom and I, but also yeah, priests and funeral directors have we cross paths all the time.
- 28:59SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_14: Yeah, I've noticed that there seems to be like a more of a lag between the death and the service.
- 29:04SPEAKER_14: Am I making that up in my head?
- 29:05SPEAKER_14: Like it used to seem like okay, died Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, now it's like a week later.
- 29:13SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_18: Different religions, different cultures, right?
- 29:16SPEAKER_18: Like Jews, right?
- 29:17SPEAKER_18: You die and then later that day you're buried.
- 29:19SPEAKER_18: Yeah, right, exactly.
- 29:20SPEAKER_14: It used to seem quicker for the, you know, ever now everyone's James Brown taking uh taking like I'm dead.
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: No, I'm not, I'm back, I'm dead again.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: They walk in again.
- 29:35SPEAKER_14: Yeah, man.
- 29:36SPEAKER_14: Yeah, die in April, buried in June.
- 29:38SPEAKER_18: Hey, brother, black folks, man, somebody died.
- 29:41SPEAKER_18: I'm still waiting on people to be buried for like years ago.
- 29:45SPEAKER_18: Didn't your uncle die four years ago?
- 29:47SPEAKER_18: When's the funeral?
- 29:48SPEAKER_18: Yeah, next year.
- 29:50SPEAKER_09: You know, does that seem like a thing?
- 29:53SPEAKER_09: It's definitely more common, but it's it's for all sorts of reasons.
- 29:56SPEAKER_09: It uh I think it's gotten a little bit more, I guess for lack of a better term, more casual, where an understanding where people say, Okay, listen, I have um like someone's out of town, kids are out of town for whatever, we we gotta get them in, or they're having finals or something like that, or there's uh, you know, our son's in the service, and he's gotta see if he can get leave.
- 30:19SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:19SPEAKER_09: Um, so it's just people have vacation.
- 30:22SPEAKER_14: Daughters got a volleyball game.
- 30:23SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:24SPEAKER_14: We have practice.
- 30:25SPEAKER_14: Yeah, there's a lot of that.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: There's a big Chick-fil-A opening Sunday, and we'll we don't want to miss that.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 30:36SPEAKER_09: Yeah, people have all sorts of reasons, and they're much more open about saying, yeah, we want to do it on this date because, you know, of whatever.
- 30:43SPEAKER_09: And you know, we're usually understanding fine with it.
- 30:46SPEAKER_09: If that's what you want, that's that's fine with us.
- 30:48SPEAKER_09: And uh, or like another reason is maybe someone's gonna they want to be cremated right away and they're not gonna have a viewing for the body.
- 30:57SPEAKER_09: Say we want to cremate them and then we're gonna have like a memorial visitation.
- 31:00SPEAKER_09: That's what we did for my father.
- 31:01SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 31:01SPEAKER_09: Yeah, so that's that's fairly common.
- 31:03SPEAKER_18: Yeah, my father passed December 22nd, 23, and then we didn't have the memorial till like April the following year.
- 31:10SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you wait for you wait for a time before everyone can get together.
- 31:13SPEAKER_18: Yeah, that's what it was.
- 31:14SPEAKER_18: And black was plus, we gotta pass we've got to raise the money to even afford the funeral.
- 31:18SPEAKER_18: You know what I mean?
- 31:19SPEAKER_14: So how long can you, I don't want to be like, but how long can you keep a body like uh in shape for uh for a wake?
- 31:28SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it that's a very common question.
- 31:30SPEAKER_09: So it kind of depends on like conditions I help.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Um I go to Walgreens with another get the logs back.
- 31:45SPEAKER_09: It's uh it depends.
- 31:47SPEAKER_09: It generally, like we like to say kind of a week is a week's kind of it's not the max, but we try to do it within the week.
- 31:54SPEAKER_09: But there's been even recently some people wait, you know, two, three weeks.
- 31:58SPEAKER_14: It's not ideal.
- 31:59SPEAKER_14: But you have to embalm the body right away?
- 32:01SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:02SPEAKER_09: And there's different things we can do to try to you know delayed.
- 32:07SPEAKER_09: And how long does it take to embalm a a human?
- 32:11SPEAKER_09: That also depends.
- 32:12SPEAKER_09: Um we'll we'll say an hour or two you know, in general, but if there's an autopsy stuff like that, then it's more evolved, could take several hours.
- 32:21SPEAKER_09: You know, um depending on certain situations.
- 32:24SPEAKER_09: I don't like it too good.
- 32:25SPEAKER_09: Is that a one-person job or uh it's generally a one-person job, but sometimes you know, if you need a little help if there's people are a little bit larger.
- 32:35SPEAKER_09: Are you still doing that or are you more like uh No, you don't want me doing that.
- 32:38SPEAKER_09: No?
- 32:38SPEAKER_09: Oh really?
- 32:39SPEAKER_09: No.
- 32:39SPEAKER_09: I mean I'm licensing it, but no, because you know, we I kind of run the business and you know, meet families, take funerals out.
- 32:46SPEAKER_09: It's just there's just too much, you know.
- 32:48SPEAKER_09: You want someone there's growing up, I like we would have these terms where you're either gonna be in the front or the back.
- 32:56SPEAKER_09: And when you come in to meet someone, you want to meet with someone who's generally in the front, dealing with families, yeah.
- 33:02SPEAKER_09: Personable, yeah.
- 33:03SPEAKER_09: We're understanding the guys in the back, no offense.
- 33:06SPEAKER_09: They're they're kind of a different breed, they're great at what they do, and they they want to do that.
- 33:11SPEAKER_09: And you know, you don't want us handling the bodies, at least embalming, and you don't want them meeting with families in general.
- 33:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_09: You know, I don't want to disparage anybody.
- 33:20SPEAKER_14: So if we ever open a funeral home, Dwayne and I will be meeting the families.
- 33:24SPEAKER_14: What do you think?
- 33:24SPEAKER_14: Eddie and Tom will be parking like I'd be selling hot dogs.
- 33:31SPEAKER_18: Man, no.
- 33:32SPEAKER_18: What would you be?
- 33:33SPEAKER_18: What would you be?
- 33:34SPEAKER_18: Front of the back guy.
- 33:35SPEAKER_18: I think front.
- 33:36SPEAKER_18: Yeah, we had to be tag teaming in the front.
- 33:40SPEAKER_18: Who'd be in the back?
- 33:41SPEAKER_14: Hey, Father's Day is coming up, and if you're still figuring out what to get the dad or husband in your life, I've got you.
- 33:47SPEAKER_14: I use T Chanley, and honestly, it's one of those things where once a guy starts, he doesn't stop.
- 33:52SPEAKER_14: It's a complete skincare system, face wash, moisturizer, everything.
- 33:57SPEAKER_14: Laid out simply so there's no guesswork.
- 34:00SPEAKER_14: Guys actually use it because it's not complicated.
- 34:03SPEAKER_14: And right now, it makes a perfect gift.
- 34:05SPEAKER_14: You can grab one of their systems, gift sets, or build your own bundle.
- 34:10SPEAKER_14: Something they'll actually use every single day, not just shove in a drawer.
- 34:14SPEAKER_14: Trust me, the dad in your life will thank you, and so will his face.
- 34:19SPEAKER_14: Head to teach.com slash pat to check it out.
- 34:22SPEAKER_14: That's T-I-E-G-E dot com slash Pat.
- 34:25SPEAKER_14: My dad's uncle, my great uncle, and it's still his name again, funeral home, had a funeral home business.
- 34:30SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 34:31SPEAKER_14: So I was always very intrigued in this stuff.
- 34:33SPEAKER_14: And when I grew up, my backyard was a cemetery.
- 34:36SPEAKER_14: I grew up right behind Mount Olivet.
- 34:38SPEAKER_14: We hopped the fence, we played in the sumo.
- 34:40SPEAKER_14: Wow.
- 34:41SPEAKER_14: You know, that's where everybody hung out.
- 34:42SPEAKER_14: Oh, yeah.
- 34:43SPEAKER_14: You know, you start off playing baseball there, and then in high school you you drink in there.
- 34:47SPEAKER_14: Right, right.
- 34:48SPEAKER_14: That's where the keggers were.
- 34:50SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 34:50SPEAKER_14: I mean, that is a uh it's a social thing.
- 34:53SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 34:54SPEAKER_14: Um but that's an essential.
- 34:56SPEAKER_18: The thing is, is like you have an essential job.
- 34:58SPEAKER_18: Like one of those jobs that nobody wants to do, but somebody's got to do it.
- 35:02SPEAKER_14: Right.
- 35:03SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 35:03SPEAKER_14: And you're on call.
- 35:05SPEAKER_14: Like you could happen any time, right?
- 35:07SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 35:07SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 35:07SPEAKER_09: So for a long time I was on call.
- 35:10SPEAKER_09: Because we were just when we when we stubbed well, when I came into the business, we we were on 79th Street neighborhood chain.
- 35:17SPEAKER_09: So we were actually renting from McGanns for seven years.
- 35:19SPEAKER_09: So we hung our license there.
- 35:20SPEAKER_09: We were there all the time and operating out of there because we didn't have a building anymore.
- 35:24SPEAKER_09: We sold it in 01, and I wasn't in the business yet, so my dad was kind of slowing down, running it, and we weren't doing much business, but just close family and friends.
- 35:33SPEAKER_09: What were you doing before this?
- 35:35SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I was when I got done at U of I, I didn't finish at U of I, but I had a couple tours down there.
- 35:42SPEAKER_09: And then uh and then uh a lot of fun.
- 35:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah, right.
- 35:46SPEAKER_09: And um, so then I went to work down at the Chicago Stock Exchange.
- 35:51SPEAKER_09: My brother was down there, and uh so I was a clerk and a floor broker for 10 years down there.
- 35:56SPEAKER_09: And didn't didn't really love it, but it was something I you know, the money was good, and so my path wasn't linear.
- 36:04SPEAKER_09: There's a lot of you know turns left and rights to my path getting back into the business.
- 36:08SPEAKER_09: I always loved the business, but I was down at the Chicago Stock Exchange for 10 years and um and got married, had a couple kids, couple daughters, and then a third on the way, and then I just had enough of that place, and I decided, you know, I wanna I want to go back in the family business.
- 36:23SPEAKER_09: And we but it it dwindled to likes to nothing because we didn't have a building anymore.
- 36:27SPEAKER_18: So I uh I were they kind of were they was your family kind of like beckoning you to come to the No kind of the opposite.
- 36:35SPEAKER_09: My dad just thought it's over, you know, we're gonna it's gonna we're gonna close up shop.
- 36:39SPEAKER_09: And I'm the youngest of seven and nobody else wanted it.
- 36:42SPEAKER_09: And but I always I always liked it and I thought I thought there, you know, we could we can you know revive it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_09: And uh but so I asked my my wife and my dad at the time, what do you think of me going to mortician school 10 years ago?
- 36:56SPEAKER_09: I was I don't know, 32.
- 36:58SPEAKER_09: And uh and they said all right, but you know, Worsham is where Worsham's a more uh mortuary college that everyone in my family went to.
- 37:07SPEAKER_09: It's up and wheeling, but it's only during the day.
- 37:10SPEAKER_09: So you know, I had a I had a house and kids and I couldn't just go to school, you know, I had to work.
- 37:15SPEAKER_09: So then um I saw Malcolm X had a uh a Mortuary Science program, a night program.
- 37:22SPEAKER_09: So I enrolled there, and um, I just told my my wife, my kids I'm I'm I'm probably not gonna see her for like a year and a half.
- 37:30SPEAKER_09: You know, I went to work, the train on work, and then went to Malcolm X.
- 37:34SPEAKER_09: And uh and that was an experience.
- 37:36SPEAKER_09: It was me and like 15 to 18 black women.
- 37:39SPEAKER_18: And uh wanted to be morticians.
- 37:41SPEAKER_09: And yeah, and uh so yeah, so they were they were wonderful to me, and they were also my my private security team.
- 37:48SPEAKER_09: They walked me to my car every night after class.
- 37:50SPEAKER_09: And uh it was great.
- 37:52SPEAKER_18: Make sure they didn't have to take you and bring you in as a uh homework.
- 38:02SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah, so yeah, I went to Malcolm X and then like a year and a half.
- 38:05SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it was about a year.
- 38:07SPEAKER_09: And uh yeah, you know, you have some gen edge you gotta have.
- 38:10SPEAKER_09: And um, so I went I went there and it was great, and then um had to buy a building and kind of revive the funeral home.
- 38:16SPEAKER_09: So we found this furniture store in Chicago Ridge and um and changed it into our funeral home.
- 38:21SPEAKER_14: And wow it's a beautiful funeral home right across from Holy Sepulchre on uh Hunter Lyman Street.
- 38:27SPEAKER_14: Beautiful, yeah, a very popular place.
- 38:30SPEAKER_14: That's where uh most of the wakes I'm going to are at.
- 38:32SPEAKER_14: Now, you have been a priest for how long?
- 38:36SPEAKER_06: Uh 33 years.
- 38:38SPEAKER_14: Thirty-three years.
- 38:39SPEAKER_14: Thirty-three, yeah.
- 38:40SPEAKER_14: It takes a year and a half to be a mortician.
- 38:42SPEAKER_14: How long does it take?
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:44SPEAKER_07: Uh over four.
- 38:46SPEAKER_07: Four after college, yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_07: Four?
- 38:49SPEAKER_07: Four after yeah, after I graduated college in eighty nine, then I went to Mundline to the major major seminary and was ordained four years later, nineteen ninety-three.
- 38:57SPEAKER_14: So it takes a while to get your own parish, and then before you know it, you're presiding over and kind of get towards the funerals because you know I've been to a million, not a million, but plenty.
- 39:07SPEAKER_14: And I was an altar server too.
- 39:09SPEAKER_14: I used to like to be the the altar boy for the funerals.
- 39:11SPEAKER_14: You kind of get pulled out of school, yeah.
- 39:13SPEAKER_14: You hear a story about someone, you get the yeah, you get tipped.
- 39:16SPEAKER_14: Yeah, you get some dough.
- 39:18SPEAKER_14: You should at least.
- 39:19SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 39:20SPEAKER_14: Do you um do you have any uh like favorite funeral songs?
- 39:25SPEAKER_14: I was thinking, kind of thinking about the bangers, the great songs that you gotta hear.
- 39:32SPEAKER_07: Good funeral banger, yeah.
- 39:34SPEAKER_07: I'm a I'm a big be not afraid guy.
- 39:35SPEAKER_07: I like a be not afraid.
- 39:37SPEAKER_07: Love being out afraid.
- 39:38SPEAKER_07: That's in the hall of fame, right?
- 39:39SPEAKER_07: Solid is solid.
- 39:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's a good one walking in.
- 39:42SPEAKER_14: They should rewrite that like don't be skirt.
- 39:47SPEAKER_14: Why you tripping?
- 39:51SPEAKER_13: Update it.
- 39:52SPEAKER_13: Please don't be your hymn.
- 39:56SPEAKER_13: Six seven.
- 39:58SPEAKER_13: Why are you tripping?
- 40:01SPEAKER_14: In B major.
- 40:03SPEAKER_07: Eagles Wings.
- 40:04SPEAKER_07: I was thinking Eagles Wings, yeah, that's a good one going out.
- 40:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 40:07SPEAKER_07: Oh, going out, yeah.
- 40:08SPEAKER_07: Be not afraid coming in, Eagles Wings Going Out's always a good one.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: Good jam.
- 40:12SPEAKER_09: Any uh stick out to you?
- 40:14SPEAKER_09: Uh those are a couple of my go-to's.
- 40:17SPEAKER_09: Um I have one I don't like.
- 40:20SPEAKER_09: Can I tell you another one?
- 40:21SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:22SPEAKER_09: And people love it.
- 40:23SPEAKER_06: Here I am, Lord?
- 40:24SPEAKER_06: No.
- 40:24SPEAKER_07: I can't stand that song.
- 40:26SPEAKER_06: You don't like that song?
- 40:27SPEAKER_06: No, it's it's it's overused.
- 40:28SPEAKER_06: We crushed it.
- 40:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 40:30SPEAKER_06: It's overplayed.
- 40:31SPEAKER_06: I think it's overplayed.
- 40:32SPEAKER_06: Played out.
- 40:34SPEAKER_07: Done with it.
- 40:34SPEAKER_07: It's like, can't touch this.
- 40:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 40:37SPEAKER_07: It's just like, I'm tired of that.
- 40:40SPEAKER_07: Which one don't you like?
- 40:42SPEAKER_08: Lord of the Dance.
- 40:43SPEAKER_08: And and people love that song.
- 40:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's a good one.
- 40:45SPEAKER_08: It seems like it's like carnival-ish to me.
- 40:47SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 40:48SPEAKER_08: Lord of the Dance.
- 40:49SPEAKER_08: Like, I am the Lord.
- 40:51SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it sounds like a kid's plate.
- 40:53SPEAKER_14: Like, yeah, right.
- 40:54SPEAKER_14: I'm with it.
- 40:55SPEAKER_08: People are crying, they're playing that song.
- 40:56SPEAKER_08: It just doesn't, it doesn't fit.
- 40:58SPEAKER_08: No, it doesn't fit.
- 40:58SPEAKER_18: Man, see, see, you all are steeped in like traditional, right, Catholic funeral, right?
- 41:07SPEAKER_18: Uh fair, songs.
- 41:09SPEAKER_18: I don't know any of that stuff, man.
- 41:11SPEAKER_09: So to your point, there was one day at Malcolm X, yeah, where it was in the middle of summer.
- 41:16SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 41:17SPEAKER_09: And uh one of our teachers, she said, listen, we're gonna, after class, we're gonna after class, we're gonna go to a funeral home on the west side.
- 41:27SPEAKER_09: And we're gonna dress some bodies.
- 41:34SPEAKER_09: And it's off hours, we're gonna dress some bodies, and we're gonna uh we're gonna do some practice funeral services, you know.
- 41:40SPEAKER_09: And I said, Well, I'm not I'm not going there, you know.
- 41:44SPEAKER_09: Summertime on the west side, like I'm not going over there.
- 41:47SPEAKER_09: And they said, hell you're not, you're going over there, Tom.
- 41:49SPEAKER_09: You know, we're gonna bust your ass so you don't go over there.
- 41:51SPEAKER_09: I said, All right, I'll go over there.
- 41:53SPEAKER_09: So drove down uh Madison, yeah, straight down Madison, and we get to this place, and they said, Listen, when you get there, we're gonna be waiting for you.
- 42:00SPEAKER_09: You're gonna we're gonna have a spot right in front, and you're gonna run in here, you know.
- 42:05SPEAKER_09: So we go in there and then we dress a couple bodies, and then we start doing like all right, we're gonna do a funeral service.
- 42:11SPEAKER_09: And I'm standing there, like just go back to the street.
- 42:13SPEAKER_09: You dress them up as like a theme, all of them.
- 42:15SPEAKER_09: We just dress up the club.
- 42:17SPEAKER_14: Backup dancers.
- 42:20SPEAKER_14: He dressed them all as the temptations.
- 42:23SPEAKER_09: What the well they started doing their services, like practice services, and I'm looking around.
- 42:31SPEAKER_09: I I don't know what I don't understand any of this, you know, because it's different cultures.
- 42:34SPEAKER_09: You do it different ways.
- 42:35SPEAKER_09: And he said, Sam, Tom, now you do it.
- 42:37SPEAKER_09: I said, I I don't even know what to do.
- 42:39SPEAKER_09: Like, this is not how we do it.
- 42:40SPEAKER_09: We're traditional Catholic and you guys do it differently, which is cool.
- 42:42SPEAKER_18: Yeah, but we do it all stiff, no pun intended.
- 42:45SPEAKER_18: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_18: Right, right.
- 42:46SPEAKER_09: And so I just it was it was neat to see a different culture how they do it, you know.
- 42:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_09: So I just watched and saw them do their thing.
- 42:54SPEAKER_18: What so what's the what songs did they or did it have songs?
- 42:58SPEAKER_09: There were no songs, but I th they would have been cooler than our songs for sure.
- 43:01SPEAKER_18: I'm gonna tell you now, for me, I have do you have I got I have a personal funeral like like songs to be played.
- 43:08SPEAKER_18: Do you have that?
- 43:09SPEAKER_18: Like I want um like Joy Inside My Tears, Stevie Wonder, you ever heard?
- 43:15SPEAKER_18: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:16SPEAKER_18: Uh Sail on Sailor, The Beach Boys.
- 43:19SPEAKER_18: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 43:20SPEAKER_18: Uh Last Train Home by Pat Matheny.
- 43:23SPEAKER_18: I got a whole list made out.
- 43:26SPEAKER_18: You know, just like you're all set already, huh?
- 43:28SPEAKER_18: Yeah, yeah, I'm set.
- 43:29SPEAKER_14: See, we got we have to have like you can't have the mainstream you want, right?
- 43:34SPEAKER_09: Pretty much.
- 43:36SPEAKER_18: Well, I guess so.
- 43:38SPEAKER_18: I mean, I mean, I was baptized Catholic, but I resigned.
- 43:41SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 43:44SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 43:45SPEAKER_14: We're gonna get you back in.
- 43:46SPEAKER_14: That's what we're doing today.
- 43:47SPEAKER_16: Why do you think I'm here as an innovation?
- 43:50SPEAKER_14: We're gonna baptize me.
- 43:58SPEAKER_14: Yeah, there are you can.
- 44:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's that's certainly one of the issues, you know, is that uh in the Catholic world, you know, a lot of places play pretty hardball, you know, in terms of you know, songs have to be kind of appropriate Catholic hymns, you know, um, as opposed to stuff from like Stevie Wonder or Yeah, you know, the Beach Boys or something, you know.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: I mean it's gotta be Oh wow, it's gotta be more, yeah.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: I think you kinda you gotta say it's over.
- 44:39SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 44:40SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it's gotta be different, right?
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: You have to be what about I think you have to be flexible, you know, and I think there's ways of doing it.
- 44:47SPEAKER_07: I think there's ways of really honoring the tradition, honoring the ritual, the Catholic ritual that we have.
- 44:52SPEAKER_07: And I think there's also ways I I just think that's being pastoral, right?
- 44:56SPEAKER_07: I mean, as a friend of mine always uh told me early on in this in this quotes business, you know, it's like when it comes to weddings and funerals, right?
- 45:05SPEAKER_07: Don't take away from their joy and don't add to their sadness.
- 45:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 45:08SPEAKER_07: You know, so you do see it as a business, huh?
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: Oh no, you know what I mean.
- 45:17SPEAKER_14: No, but when my grandpa died, I remember you know, he really loved the song uh Send in the Clowns.
- 45:23SPEAKER_14: Just for whatever reason.
- 45:24SPEAKER_14: No, he probably had no idea what it was about.
- 45:26SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 45:27SPEAKER_14: And the pastor of the parish was like, we can't play that.
- 45:31SPEAKER_14: That's about like people living in sin, two lovers.
- 45:34SPEAKER_14: Like, oh man.
- 45:35SPEAKER_14: How do you know that?
- 45:36SPEAKER_14: Right.
- 45:37SPEAKER_14: You just like the tune.
- 45:39SPEAKER_14: You know.
- 45:40SPEAKER_14: So there is some of that, but you have some leeway after the end of Mass.
- 45:45SPEAKER_14: I've seen people go into you know, when Irish Eyes are smiling, or like a different more.
- 45:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, like I said, I think there's way I I think there are ways that we can be flexible.
- 45:57SPEAKER_07: You know, there are some places absolutely not.
- 46:00SPEAKER_07: They are they draw the line, right?
- 46:02SPEAKER_07: And Tom can tell Tom's probably seen it more than I have.
- 46:05SPEAKER_09: Oh, it varies by church to church.
- 46:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 46:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's not just one universal rule.
- 46:10SPEAKER_07: It's kind of more individual parish, right?
- 46:13SPEAKER_07: It's kind of depends on the parish, the pastor, and the music director.
- 46:17SPEAKER_14: Yeah, they're like Hurley will take a nudist.
- 46:18SPEAKER_14: We're good.
- 46:19SPEAKER_14: I know.
- 46:22SPEAKER_14: You're the perfect guy to take this nudist.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: Bucknecked, Stevie Wonder.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 46:32SPEAKER_14: What about the eulogy?
- 46:34SPEAKER_14: Because there's rules about that too, right?
- 46:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah, well again, it depends on church to church, you know.
- 46:40SPEAKER_07: I tell you, I've been 33 years in this vocation, not business, in this vocation.
- 46:46SPEAKER_07: And um, I tell you what, I will go on record saying I bet like 95% of the eulogies that I have heard have been beautiful, appropriate.
- 46:56SPEAKER_07: I I'm a big fan of them.
- 46:57SPEAKER_07: I really am.
- 46:58SPEAKER_07: Uh I'd say yeah, there's probably been about 5% where it's like those are the ones we want to hear about.
- 47:05SPEAKER_14: Do you have one that sticks out where you're like, what is going on?
- 47:08SPEAKER_14: We got to pull the plug on this guy, this mic.
- 47:11SPEAKER_07: Oh.
- 47:12SPEAKER_07: Well, I had one truly maybe about a month ago.
- 47:15SPEAKER_07: I had a funeral a month ago, and uh won't name the church.
- 47:18SPEAKER_07: Eulogy.
- 47:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, eulogy was going on.
- 47:21SPEAKER_07: I think it's still going on.
- 47:25SPEAKER_07: I think I think she's still up there talking.
- 47:27SPEAKER_07: I mean, it was just unbelievable.
- 47:29SPEAKER_07: I I think it was a good 41, 45 minutes.
- 47:32SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 47:33SPEAKER_07: I mean, it was just oh yeah, I was like glancing down.
- 47:35SPEAKER_07: I was like, bring this, bring this plane in for a landing.
- 47:38SPEAKER_14: Was it a sudden, unexpected death?
- 47:41SPEAKER_07: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 47:42SPEAKER_07: The gentleman was in his upper 80s, he had suffered from dementia for several years.
- 47:47SPEAKER_07: Good man, really, really good man.
- 47:49SPEAKER_07: But uh, oh my gosh, this eulogy just really geez, kind of took the wind out of the sail here.
- 47:55SPEAKER_18: Even the day that wrap it up.
- 48:01SPEAKER_14: Right?
- 48:02SPEAKER_14: Man, but there's placement issues too.
- 48:04SPEAKER_14: Like sometimes I was at a funeral not too long ago, and the eulogies were like given before the gospel, which I had not really seen before.
- 48:12SPEAKER_14: I usually see it at the end.
- 48:14SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 48:14SPEAKER_07: I prefer it at the end, like after Holy Communion in our tradition.
- 48:18SPEAKER_07: But there are some places that have said, all right, you're gonna do a eulogy.
- 48:21SPEAKER_07: First of all, they put like time constraints on, it's gotta be three minutes.
- 48:25SPEAKER_07: You gotta give us a draft because we want to see what you're gonna say.
- 48:28SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and uh, I've never done that.
- 48:30SPEAKER_07: And um, and and they'll do it at the beginning, like as soon as like the casket comes in, maybe you've had some of those, you know.
- 48:37SPEAKER_07: I don't like it.
- 48:38SPEAKER_07: I like it after communion.
- 48:39SPEAKER_07: I think you know, let me do the homily and then you wrap it up with some, you know.
- 48:44SPEAKER_07: I'm supposed to preach the gospel.
- 48:45SPEAKER_07: I try to make a connection between the gospel and the person who died and their life, and then if somebody wants to do a eulogy and talk about their life and tell some stories, that's all good with me, you know.
- 48:55SPEAKER_07: But I get that across the across the board.
- 48:58SPEAKER_14: I'm gonna ask you about the gospel.
- 49:00SPEAKER_14: Do you do have a preference?
- 49:02SPEAKER_14: What's up?
- 49:02SPEAKER_14: Do you have a preference, Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John?
- 49:04SPEAKER_14: Like can you tell can you read?
- 49:07SPEAKER_14: Can you read?
- 49:08SPEAKER_14: Here we go.
- 49:09SPEAKER_14: Can you read something and be like, oh, that's that's Luke.
- 49:12SPEAKER_14: Or that's that's John.
- 49:13SPEAKER_14: Like, do the do they have a voice to you, like a personality?
- 49:17SPEAKER_07: They do actually.
- 49:18SPEAKER_07: It's funny you say that.
- 49:19SPEAKER_14: Yes, because then that's I'm prepared for this conversation.
- 49:22SPEAKER_14: He has notes.
- 49:23SPEAKER_07: He has notes for questions.
- 49:25SPEAKER_07: Cheat.
- 49:26SPEAKER_07: Um no, I mean, uh, and when especially when people say, Hey, you know, when I ask them, like, did you pick out any readings for the funeral, you know?
- 49:34SPEAKER_07: And they'll say, No, could you help us?
- 49:35SPEAKER_07: And I say, Well, let's talk about him first or her.
- 49:38SPEAKER_07: So we talk about the person, and then I was like, you know what, this could be a really good text, you know, uh that we could use for, you know, this your loved one's funeral.
- 49:48SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
- 49:49SPEAKER_07: So I mean, I after 33 years, you get a little bit of the hang of it, you know, in terms of what gospel text you feel would work best at this funeral.
- 49:58SPEAKER_14: So who do you like?
- 49:59SPEAKER_14: Who is do you think is one of the the better writer of of the of the fort?
- 50:02SPEAKER_14: Do you do you have one?
- 50:04SPEAKER_14: Or no?
- 50:05SPEAKER_14: They're not they're gone.
- 50:06SPEAKER_14: They're dead.
- 50:07SPEAKER_14: They're not gonna be offended.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: It's all good.
- 50:12SPEAKER_07: I you know, I particularly think John's Gospel, I think, has some really good texts that I think that work well.
- 50:20SPEAKER_07: I think.
- 50:20SPEAKER_07: You know, and if you look at the ritual book, actually, I think most of the suggested readings, I think, probably come more from John's Gospel.
- 50:27SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 50:27SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 50:27SPEAKER_14: What are some of your favorite stories or favorite gospel?
- 50:31SPEAKER_14: Yeah, favorite gospels.
- 50:32SPEAKER_14: Like, are you like a fish and loaves guy?
- 50:40SPEAKER_14: I mean, they're all reruns at this point.
- 50:44SPEAKER_14: You've seen it.
- 50:45SPEAKER_14: You know the episode.
- 50:47SPEAKER_14: You're like, oh man.
- 50:48SPEAKER_14: You got some some do some excite you more than more than others?
- 50:51SPEAKER_14: I mean come on.
- 50:55SPEAKER_08: The rooms of many dwelling places.
- 50:57SPEAKER_08: Is that one?
- 50:58SPEAKER_08: That one you like?
- 50:58SPEAKER_08: Oh, that one.
- 50:59SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's talk about a banger.
- 51:02SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's a banger, you know.
- 51:03SPEAKER_07: That's a whole fan.
- 51:04SPEAKER_07: Do that one by heart, you know.
- 51:05SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah.
- 51:06SPEAKER_07: Jesus said to his friends, yeah, do not let your hearts be troubled, right?
- 51:08SPEAKER_07: Have faith in God and faith in me.
- 51:10SPEAKER_07: In my father's house, there's many dwelling places.
- 51:12SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, that one is a real popular one, right?
- 51:14SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 51:14SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 51:15SPEAKER_14: Is it a longer text or medium?
- 51:19SPEAKER_07: It's pretty six verses.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Teege Hanley has changed my life.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: Skin has been amazing.
- 51:26SPEAKER_12: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
- 51:31SPEAKER_12: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
- 51:34SPEAKER_12: We know you're here for pictures.
- 51:36SPEAKER_12: I thought you were a model.
- 51:36SPEAKER_11: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
- 51:38SPEAKER_11: In fact, Aprati was like, your skin's awesome.
- 51:41SPEAKER_12: Just like, I look forward to like, oh, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
- 51:44SPEAKER_12: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said I'm 50.
- 51:48SPEAKER_12: And everyone goes, What?
- 51:49SPEAKER_12: T Shanley.
- 51:50SPEAKER_12: It's the way we face the day.
- 51:55SPEAKER_14: I don't know how you do it because here you're like the um this is kind of a throwback.
- 52:01SPEAKER_14: W you had the uh connection to, well, first you were at Old St.
- 52:06SPEAKER_14: Pat's for many years, which is probably the most vibrant parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and you have um you know been at other parishes, but you have so many people that you have to respond to and that think they know not think they know you, they know you.
- 52:22SPEAKER_14: And y you have to give so much.
- 52:24SPEAKER_14: Um how do you continue to like come up with an original homily or do you have to kind of do you use some general ideas and well it's funny you say that, and again, I'm not patting myself on the back, but an example, there's somebody that we know in common, uh all of us do.
- 52:43SPEAKER_07: Um so it was myself and a uh a young guy, a younger priest, who was involved uh to preside at this person's funeral.
- 52:52SPEAKER_07: And so the two of us went over to the family home and I said, I'll meet you over at the home.
- 52:58SPEAKER_07: I want to go talk to the family.
- 52:59SPEAKER_07: I was the main kind of presider and preacher, but uh homilist, and and he he came along as well, and he's a younger guy.
- 53:05SPEAKER_07: And um so I was there for about, you know, hour, hour and a half, and we were talking about I just wanted to learn more about I knew this person, you know this person, um, but I wanted to learn just a little bit more, you know.
- 53:18SPEAKER_07: And um so afterwards we're walking out to our cars, and he said, That was really helpful, that was really good.
- 53:26SPEAKER_07: This priest said to me, and he goes, Do you do this for every funeral?
- 53:28SPEAKER_07: I was like, Well, yeah, don't you?
- 53:31SPEAKER_07: I mean, he's like, I want to get to know the person, especially if I even if I know them, I want to know more from the family perspective.
- 53:37SPEAKER_07: Like, tell me about them, you know, tell me about you know, just a little bit more history, too.
- 53:42SPEAKER_07: I want a little more history that I may not have I don't have access to, you know.
- 53:46SPEAKER_07: But anyhow, but like I spend time with them.
- 53:48SPEAKER_07: So and again, I'm not patting myself on the back.
- 53:50SPEAKER_07: This sounds a little bit too uh, you know, not at all.
- 53:54SPEAKER_07: I mean it's real stuff or something, you know, but it's like the way you should do it, right?
- 53:58SPEAKER_18: Yeah, it's like this other guy was phoning it in.
- 54:01SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I was just kind of like surprised when he asked me, like, do you do this with every funeral?
- 54:06SPEAKER_07: I was like, that was really helpful.
- 54:07SPEAKER_07: I was like, Yeah.
- 54:09SPEAKER_07: Like, what do you do?
- 54:10SPEAKER_07: How do you get ready for a funeral?
- 54:11SPEAKER_07: Like, I find it to be one of the most sacred things that I do.
- 54:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, the funeral?
- 54:15SPEAKER_07: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:16SPEAKER_07: You know, weddings too, but as I've said, and again, you know, weddings and funerals are the biggest coming together of the most unchurch people.
- 54:25SPEAKER_07: So it's like this is where you gotta make your mark.
- 54:28SPEAKER_07: So that's why I get I get irritated when I hear about you know, clergy folks who say, Oh, I don't like doing weddings, you know, they're just a big show, or you know, or people that try to put so many constrictions, you know, on funerals, and it's like, gee whiz, you're gonna have people in front of you for whom Sunday mass is not their is not a regular part of their diet.
- 54:45SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 54:45SPEAKER_07: You know, so give them a great experience at a funeral or a wedding, and then maybe, just maybe they'll get up and say, Hey, you know what, this wasn't so bad afterwards, after all.
- 54:54SPEAKER_07: So anyhow, and again, do you plug that at the end of the funeral?
- 54:57SPEAKER_14: Like, hey, I'm here on Sundays, yeah.
- 55:01SPEAKER_06: Be good to your service, you know.
- 55:03SPEAKER_06: Uh Twitter.
- 55:10SPEAKER_18: Do you we're open every Sunday?
- 55:12SPEAKER_18: Do you does how a person passed away ever inform how you service that you give?
- 55:19SPEAKER_18: Oh, yeah.
- 55:20SPEAKER_18: Like if he died robbing a bank, do you did quote quote from like thou shalt not steal?
- 55:27SPEAKER_18: I told you what was gonna happen.
- 55:29SPEAKER_18: You know, that's what you get.
- 55:31SPEAKER_18: No, but you know what I mean.
- 55:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I absolutely, yeah.
- 55:36SPEAKER_07: I haven't had that situation, but um No, absolutely.
- 55:40SPEAKER_07: I mean, you know, you're gonna do a funeral a lot different if it's you know, s a young person, you know, young person versus maybe somebody who's lived a really long life and yeah, I mean, people who die tragically, people who die of quotes natural causes, whatever that is.
- 55:58SPEAKER_07: I mean, right.
- 55:59SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it it all it all differs, yeah.
- 56:01SPEAKER_07: Yeah, absolutely.
- 56:02SPEAKER_07: Now you have and family situations that can be very tricky.
- 56:05SPEAKER_07: Tom knows that too, you know.
- 56:06SPEAKER_07: It's like sometimes you gotta walk a fine line, you know.
- 56:09SPEAKER_18: Right.
- 56:10SPEAKER_18: Certain members of family not getting along or whatever brought them together.
- 56:14SPEAKER_18: That's the first time they're finding out, what I got more brothers and sisters, and another dad, and six more mothers.
- 56:21SPEAKER_18: What the you know, right?
- 56:24SPEAKER_18: Nobody's coming out, yeah.
- 56:25SPEAKER_18: Like at Bob Marley when he passed, and they said all of a sudden they're like kids got together, didn't even know, you know, all that kind of thing.
- 56:32SPEAKER_18: It happens.
- 56:33SPEAKER_14: Well, I can remember that growing up, like you know, that was the time people came in, you know, before everyone was connected with the internet and email and socials, you know, you that was uh the moment.
- 56:43SPEAKER_14: I want to talk about some other stuff you do because in addition to running a parish, you're a most holy redeemer.
- 56:49SPEAKER_14: By the way, how about the commercial you did with Ozzy, Ozzy Gheean, that we've heard a lot about?
- 56:54SPEAKER_14: We were talking about it off air before we started.
- 56:56SPEAKER_14: Yeah, man, you got some acting chops.
- 57:00SPEAKER_18: Hey, Father, I'm telling you, you were so good.
- 57:02SPEAKER_18: I didn't know you were a real priest.
- 57:04SPEAKER_18: I thought you were an actor for real.
- 57:06SPEAKER_18: You were good.
- 57:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah, just rent this outfit, you know.
- 57:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 57:11SPEAKER_07: No, thanks to you.
- 57:12SPEAKER_07: Did you get any, my man?
- 57:15SPEAKER_07: Uh none whatsoever.
- 57:16SPEAKER_07: Not one.
- 57:17SPEAKER_07: I have to admit, I was a little panicked.
- 57:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 57:19SPEAKER_07: I was.
- 57:20SPEAKER_07: I was a little worried I'd be getting a little call from uh the little red bird known as the cardinal.
- 57:25SPEAKER_07: Uh no, I I did not.
- 57:27SPEAKER_07: And maybe he didn't see it yet.
- 57:28SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 57:28SPEAKER_07: But so far, so good.
- 57:30SPEAKER_07: How often do you talk to the cardinal?
- 57:32SPEAKER_07: Not too often.
- 57:33SPEAKER_07: No.
- 57:33SPEAKER_07: No.
- 57:33SPEAKER_07: No, I no need to, you know.
- 57:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 57:36SPEAKER_07: So you have a uh do you know the Pope?
- 57:39SPEAKER_07: I've met him before.
- 57:40SPEAKER_07: I met I met him at St.
- 57:42SPEAKER_07: Rita.
- 57:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 57:44SPEAKER_07: I'm alma mater, yeah.
- 57:45SPEAKER_07: I did.
- 57:45SPEAKER_14: I met him when he was uh good old Bob from the South Side.
- 57:48SPEAKER_14: Yeah, what does that mean to you having seeing him as uh Pope?
- 57:50SPEAKER_14: And what do you think it means to like the Chicago archdiocese and I I think it's fantastic, I really do.
- 57:56SPEAKER_07: I I it's uh I it's amazing.
- 57:58SPEAKER_07: Uh you know, I you know still doesn't seem real in a way.
- 58:01SPEAKER_07: It does not seem real.
- 58:02SPEAKER_07: Uh I've told people, you know, it's the old where were you when you heard that this guy from the south side became Pope?
- 58:08SPEAKER_07: I was standing with a microphone in hand in the cafeteria of Marist High School, whereas you know I'm at Holy Redeemer and I uh do some chaplain stuff, chaplaincy things at Marist.
- 58:19SPEAKER_07: And I was in the cafeteria during a lunch period on that May date uh last year in 2025 when that cardinal came out on the uh on the logia and said, uh Bemus Papa, we have a Pope, you know?
- 58:34SPEAKER_07: And then so I was like, Oh guys and girls, I said, you know, listen up here, you know.
- 58:38SPEAKER_07: And and they were, they were tuned in.
- 58:39SPEAKER_07: We had the we had the you know TV monitors on, you know.
- 58:42SPEAKER_07: And so it's dead quiet.
- 58:44SPEAKER_07: The guy says in Latin, you know, I don't know Latin that well, but it's like Roberto Prevost.
- 58:50SPEAKER_07: And I was like, oh my goodness.
- 58:52SPEAKER_07: And I was like, Bob Prevost.
- 58:55SPEAKER_07: I got the mic in hand.
- 58:55SPEAKER_07: I said, Boys and girls, I said, you are seeing incredible history today.
- 58:59SPEAKER_07: I said, Bob Prevost is from is American.
- 59:04SPEAKER_07: He's from the U United States, he's from Chicago.
- 59:06SPEAKER_07: So what do they start doing?
- 59:07SPEAKER_07: These clowns, they start pounding the table.
- 59:09SPEAKER_12: USA, USA, USA.
- 59:13SPEAKER_07: So then, well now again, remember I met Marist High School, right?
- 59:16SPEAKER_07: And I said, Boys and girls, they said, Bob Prevost is, I met him, I said, he's actually an Augustinian.
- 59:21SPEAKER_07: Now again, they would have thought I was speaking Chinese.
- 59:24SPEAKER_07: I said, Augustinian, I said, they're the guys, they're the order that runs like St.
- 59:29SPEAKER_07: Rita and Providence.
- 59:30SPEAKER_07: So what are the, you know, what do the thugs do in the boo boo?
- 59:34SPEAKER_07: You know, all saying to hear was St.
- 59:35SPEAKER_07: Rita, another school in the Catholic League.
- 59:37SPEAKER_09: And Saint Rita was a different reaction.
- 59:38SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, I'm sure probably, yeah, going crazy, you know, but either way, but it was pretty cool, you know, to be in a cafeteria of high school kids, you know, when the when you hear that the first not only American, but Chicago born guy becomes the Pope.
- 59:52SPEAKER_07: Are you kidding me?
- 59:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 59:53SPEAKER_09: My daughter Katie was in St.
- 59:55SPEAKER_09: Peter's Square when that happened.
- 59:56SPEAKER_09: She was studying abroad in Rome and she was she was there.
- 59:58SPEAKER_09: Really?
- 59:58SPEAKER_09: Front seats.
- 59:59SPEAKER_09: Katie was there, had a video and he came out.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_09: Have you met the Pope?
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_09: I have not.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_09: No, but tons of people we know.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it's like one degree of separation, even if you don't.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_14: Absolutely.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_14: Like you could get a cell?
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_06: I probably could, yeah.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_07: I tell you what, Tom, we all know Father's time.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_07: Oh, Father Tom knows.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_07: By the time McCarthy.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_07: He was doing like a confirmation retreat with our eighth graders at Holy Redeemer.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_07: And after at the end of the retreat, he said, Come on, everybody, let's do a selfie.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_07: We'll send it to the Pope.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_07: He sent it to the Pope, and the Pope responded and said, Oh, wish him well on their confirmation.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_07: Really?
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_07: Did a selfie with these kids and the gymnasium is pretty good.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_18: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_18: Isn't that bad?
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_14: Yeah, you do some other cool stuff too.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_14: You're chap you're the chaplain for the Bears, Chicago Bears.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_14: You are?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_14: Oh, this gospel talk.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_09: We're gonna get it right to the bears.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_09: Let's talk about real bears.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_07: The real religion football.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_07: Uh yeah.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I've been uh you know what?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_07: When I was down in Old St.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_07: Pat's, they called probably back in 2006 or seven, and uh they were like, hey, uh, we need somebody to say mass uh for the Bears because we have mass before every home game.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_07: Because we're one and nine right now.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_07: Back then they really needed.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_14: Well, oh six-07, they were decent, right?
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_14: Pretty decent, yeah.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_14: I think Lovey was still coaching.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_07: I think Lovey was coaching then.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_07: The priest who they had retired, and so they needed somebody.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_07: So I went over to the Chicago Hilton where they used to go uh the you know the weekend of the games, and so did mass and then uh just kept doing it.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_07: So still do it to this day, yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_07: Which is okay.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_07: It's not as big a thrill as everybody thinks it is.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_07: It's not like I've got the entire team in front of me.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_07: It's only a handful of guys.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_07: Oh a couple of you know, I mean a couple of players who are Catholic and you know, some coaches, and maybe sometimes some of the McCaskies, and uh but yeah, but I'm in one room and then they do have a a Reverend or Chaplain in another room, you know, for a chapel for another service.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_07: So so they have options.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_07: They can either go to the the reverence thing or they can go to Can you get us tickets?
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_13: Can you get us on the field before they move?
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_14: Can you pray that they don't move?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_14: Can we join hands?
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_14: You think they're gonna do that?
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_07: Uh it sure looks like that, unless somebody intervenes or intercedes.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_07: Uh it looks like they're going that way.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_07: I yeah.
- 1:02:30unknown: That's the Pope.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we gotta get his get him on our side.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_07: Pope's from the Southeast Side, man.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_07: It's quicker to Hammond than it is to Arlington Heights, you know.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_07: That's absolutely true.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_06: Yes, outsiders.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_06: It's good for us.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_14: Yeah, it's good, but I I'm I hope they don't move to Indiana.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_14: Oh man.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_18: I don't think I was hoping they'd stay in Chicago, but that seemed like that's not gonna happen.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_18: Well, I don't know.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_18: I still contend they're gonna stay in Chicago, but at least stay in Illinois.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_18: I think they're going to Arlington.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_14: I hope so.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_07: So you think you're gonna go Arlington?
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: I still do.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_08: Do you?
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_07: I wonder if whatever, I don't know, a special session or uh whatever.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_07: I mean, somebody's got to pull some strings pretty fast.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_07: Because I was listening to that mayor of Hammond, Indiana, McDermott.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_14: Were you listening to the score this morning?
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_14: Molly and Hall?
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_14: I was, actually.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_14: I wasn't sure if you're supposed to go up the man's uh station on a podcast.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_14: You put Mitch Rosen on last week.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_14: Oh, he's the guy.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_07: You don't listen to the pie?
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_07: No, I know, but I didn't know if you were supposed to I do, of course I do.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_07: Is he on trial?
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_07: I'm just saying, I don't know if you're supposed to mention another guy's station on another guy's podcast.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_17: Yeah, you can do it.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_17: Whatever you want to mention.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_06: I know you're real sensitive.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_06: No, I don't know.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_14: It sounds I'm hearing that the uh there are more people going to church and that the Catholic faith is growing right now in in our country.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_14: Are you seeing that, feeling that?
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_14: Um That's what I'm hearing as well.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_07: Um you know, it's funny because we're from an area where you think everybody is like Irish and Catholic, right?
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_07: On the south side of Chicago.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_07: So it's kind of hard for us to tell, like, you know, people who were joining the church at Easter time.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_07: I mean, we had maybe two people, you know, but you know, other churches around the area, like in downtown Chic, you know, at Old St.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_07: Pat's or whatever, I mean, there's like 45 people that were that were joining the church.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_07: So I don't know.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's what they're saying, uh, that there was an uptick.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_07: I don't know if it was just I don't know, is it because of the Pope?
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_07: I have no idea.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_07: Um I I do believe there I let me tell you say this.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_07: I believe that there is a resurgence in terms of people's uh desire to engage spiritually and with the faith.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_07: Uh I see that really at a high school level, believe it or not.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_07: I see more of our students, student athletes, that are really into their faith life.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_07: And some that have taken their own initiative to start a Bible study and um on their own.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_07: On their own, you know.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_07: And um so I I'm I'm kind of picking up vibes like that.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_07: You know.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_07: Uh I I'm I'm not convinced that we're getting like big, big surge surges in numbers in terms of people in the benches on Sunday.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_07: At least at our I mean, we we've you know, we've increased our numbers, but could you make the chairs more comfortable?
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_14: Trying.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_14: I mean how about those kneelers?
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_14: Trying different pads.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_14: Look how we rolled it out today for you.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_14: Some that can be a little bit.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_14: What size is our archdiocese and how's it compare to?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_07: Well, uh, we are, I believe, the third largest diocese, third or third largest diocese.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_07: I think we're after New York and uh LA.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_07: LA is the biggest.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_07: Oh, it is.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Los Angeles is the biggest, and then I think it's New York, and then I think it's I think.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_07: Boston is not as many.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_07: It's up there, but it's not as many.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_07: Even like like the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_07: is only like 500,000, I believe, Catholics.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_07: So it's not real big, but it's a prominent spot.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_07: So that's why it's what's our approximate number in Chicago?
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_07: Well, um, we say that we're about 2 million, 2.1 million uh of the metro area that's cook in Lake County are ki Catholic.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_07: Uh but but again, if you look at what we call the October count in terms of people who go with regularity on Sundays, it's only about 500,000, 600,000.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_07: So I mean that's not that's why I'm just wondering about this.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_07: They're all gonna die.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_17: Whatever faith you are, eventually you're a customer.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_17: We're taking nudists.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_14: And my mom wanted me to ask about the flower car.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_14: What happened to the flower car?
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_14: We used to have in a funeral behind the hearse a like a flatbed.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_14: Was it an el camino?
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_14: Like an el camino tricked out.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_14: Yeah, you put all the flowers in the back.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_09: That's not a thing anymore, huh?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_09: It's not a thing anymore.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_09: There's only actually just a few left in the in the city.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_09: Really?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_09: Like we we know uh a funeral home in Bridgeport that has one, friends of ours, um, and maybe a couple others, like livery companies that have them, but people don't use them anymore, don't want them anymore.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_07: What about like with the black community, isn't there?
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_07: Flower cars, is that uh I haven't seen uh no?
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_09: It's big in the Asian community using them a lot.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah, okay.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah, still fairly common.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_18: Well, I was telling we were talking about, you know, like crazy funerals.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_18: Do you remember this is years and years and years ago, where they buried this brother Fluky Stokes in his you know about this?
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah, Steve Ravon wrote the song about it too.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_09: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_09: Willie the Wimp.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_18: Yeah, in his Cadillac, right?
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_09: Sitting up, yeah, sitting up with his Cadillac often.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_18: Yeah, you know how the brothers do.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_14: Buried him in a Cadillac.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_09: Buried the car?
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_09: No, it was the the casket was made to look like a Cadillac.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_09: It was really tricked out like a Cadillac.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_09: And he was sitting up.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_07: He was sitting up in this casket.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_18: Flew with his hands on the wheel, yeah, still on duty.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_14: Yeah, Willie, flukey stokes.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_14: I've seen and it goes has gone viral, people that are propped up, like you go to a viewing, awake, and they're sitting in a chair.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_14: They got stuff in their hands.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_14: And they're singing and dancing around.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_09: It's like a DJ.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_14: Hey, Father's Day is right around the corner, and I bet you don't have a gift yet.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_14: So here's an idea.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_14: How about some Tiege Hanley?
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_14: It's a complete skincare system.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_14: I use it every day.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_14: Face wash, moisturizer, the whole thing.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_14: Lay it out simply too, so there's no guesswork.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_14: That's why guys use it.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_14: Because it's not complicated.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_14: Right now, we're running 20% off the 90-day routines, which honestly, that's the move for the gift.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_14: You're not just giving a one-time thing, you're setting the guy up for three months.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_14: He'll use it, he'll notice a difference, and he'll wonder why he didn't start sooner.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_14: Head to T.com slash Pat to grab it before Father's Day.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_14: That's T-I-E-G-E.com slash Pat.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_14: Have you had any requests like that?
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_14: Anything like Um Not really.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_14: Not really.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_14: Are you seeing any changes, trends like technology, or more cremations than you used to see?
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_14: There's more cremations for sure, but there's still a lot of viewings.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_09: Like instead of just a cremation, they'll still want maybe a viewing and then a cremation afterwards.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_09: Instead of being buried, a lot more people are designed to be cremated and then doing all sorts of stuff with the ashes, you know.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_09: Some people bury the ashes, which the Catholic Church wants to bury the ashes.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_09: Some people will scatter them, you know, keep them at the house in an urn.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_09: Some people split them up and say we're gonna bury part part of Grandpa, and then we're all gonna get little urns and give them out as keepsakes, you know, or scatter some of them.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_09: What do you think?
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_18: Like what Keith Richards did.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_18: He smoked his dad.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_18: He did Keith Richards, man.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_18: He had his father cremated and they said he smoked some of them.
- 1:10:18unknown: Yeah.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_14: That's hilarious.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_14: Yeah, man.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_14: Do you feel like that they're opening it up to that stuff?
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_07: Uh no.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_07: I mean, I think, right?
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_07: I mean, I think that one is the church is saying, hey, if you're if you're gonna do cremation, that it's yeah, it's sacred and we have a sacred ground.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_07: And and so more Catholic cemeteries, right, are building are building those uh columbariums.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_07: Is that what they're called?
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah, columbariums, which is the place where you would place an urn of ashes.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_07: The church is still not grooving that whole idea of like scattering them or smoking them.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_14: Uh when I was you could put them in use them as incense recycle.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_14: Keep it all.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_09: When I was growing up, my dad when cremation kind of I don't know when it really started, but I was young and you know, we're a traditional Catholic funeral home, and my dad, if people started calling and were requesting a cremation, my dad wouldn't even do it.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_09: Oh wow.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_09: Oh, I won't.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_09: He said no, because we don't we don't cremate people.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_09: We're Catholic, we don't do it.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_09: Absolutely.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_18: I just looked at it as a desecration.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_07: Yes, I that's exactly right.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_07: You know, the Catholic belief was that the body is sacred, and so therefore the body should be you know reverently, you know, buried and not cremated.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_07: So there was a point in time where the Catholic Church was totally opposed to uh cremation, uh just like Mr.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_07: Curly was uh you know, Tom's dad was uh alluding to, you know.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_07: And uh I tell you what, it was right around the time I was ordained, so it had to be in the early 90s.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_07: I can remember receiving uh kind of an appendix to the funeral ritual book that said, now uh you can actually do uh memorial mass with cremes present.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_07: Because back in the day, if somebody did have a cremation, you weren't even allowed to bring the cremanes into the church, right?
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_07: You couldn't bring them into the church.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_07: And and so it was somewhere maybe around the early 90s that uh the church must have kind of lightened up on that or loosened up on it.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_07: And so that because I remember receiving an appendix that I still have today in the back of the funeral book that now allows for allows for that.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_07: And now, of course, as I just said, we've got Catholic cemeteries that are building you know special places for urns of ashes.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_07: So it takes a while for the certain parts of the country that's all you see.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_09: Like you go to California, it's I don't know, it could be as much as 90% of people get cremated on.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_07: I wonder what it is like places like New Orleans.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_07: Well, because I heard about New Orleans where it's like Oh, because you can't bury into the soil.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah, because they're they're above ground.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_18: It seems like at some point it would just be you just reach a point in a critical mass where just so many dead people that you'd have to start to do something to diminish the you know, the footprint anyway.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_14: It's a lot of land.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_18: Yeah, the land, you know, send them off into space or something.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_14: Remember that scene and meet the parents when he uh opens the champagne and bounces it off the the mother's remains.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_04: You remember that?
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_09: That is one of the funniest things in cinema history.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_09: We we we had uh uh a few years ago, my my wife's grandpa passed away, and uh I'm probably gonna get in trouble for this one now.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_09: But uh my uh um her grandpa was he was cremated, and my mother-in-law was gonna bring him up to uh Pawpaw, Michigan, and he had a little lake there, and they were taking him out of the pontoon and you know spread him in the lake.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_09: And uh I said to my mother-in-law, I said, Listen, you you know, you gotta be careful with this.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_09: I'm fine, Tom, I'm fine.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_09: I know what I'm doing.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_09: I go, No, you really you really gotta be careful with this.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_09: I go, I'm telling you.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_09: And uh I go, can I just tell you how you should do it?
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_09: She'd oh, we'll be fine, Tom, we'll be fine.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_09: They're on the pontoon boat on the little lake, and phone rings.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_05: He's all over us.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_05: They were I can't get it.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_05: All over them, all over the boat.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_05: Nothing got snorted.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_05: I told you.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_05: I told you.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_09: I told you so it's a real thing, it's not just in the movies, then it happens.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_09: Just I don't know how many no Keith Richards smoked.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_05: You're good.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_13: Oh man.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_13: Threw them into the wind?
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_13: Yeah, wrong side of the pontoon.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_13: Jeez.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_13: Oh my gosh.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_18: Then what years ago, didn't somebody try to sp spread somebody's ass like at Wrigley Field?
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_18: Didn't they try to toss them out in the field or something like that?
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_09: People try to do that all the time.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_09: Motor Dame and Wrigley.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_07: I think there's a lot of people at Wrigley Field.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_07: Man.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_07: Oh, I think it's done all the time.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_14: You had a really good relationship, and it's kind of a weird segue, but you had a great relationship with uh Ryan Sandberg.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_14: I I was very fortunate to meet him, yeah.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_14: And I remember you telling me recently, uh, maybe it was the day we filmed the commercial, that he ri had a big impact on you.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_14: He uh he was great.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_07: Like I said, I I've told people it's like uh, you know, oh, I was friends with Ryan Sandberg.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_07: I don't say that I don't say that to brag.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_07: I'm a socks guy.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_07: I said that at his funeral.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_07: You know, and it's like I didn't once watch Ryan Sandberg as a second baseman.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_07: I just knew him as a dad, as a grandpa, uh a papy, as he was affectionately called.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_07: Uh just a great, great human being.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_07: I met him because he was a godparent.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_07: He and Margaret were godparents at a baptism that I did and just got to know him throughout the years and uh became good friends.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_07: But oh, his faith was beautiful, just a beautiful guy.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_07: Great, great man.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that was a big thing.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_07: All the great things said about him.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_07: You could multiply that by a thousand.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_07: Just a great, great guy.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_07: Good heart, good man, um, just a loving guy, and a faith-filled guy, too.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_14: That's very cool.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_14: Guys, you you you two are great guys.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_14: And and I know maybe there was some hesitation about doing this and coming in.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_14: What a great conversation.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_14: What a blast, man.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_14: You guys are living very interesting, intriguing lives and having an impact on people.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_14: So I I just find that very, very interesting.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_09: Uh you want to plug your Twitter before he does.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_09: Can I show you one of this?
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_09: I figured I saw this yesterday.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_09: I figured you may let you may get a kick out of this.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_09: So I this is my great-grandpa's original business card.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_09: So back from the turn of the last century.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_14: So telephone.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_14: Yards.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_14: Yards.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_14: 884.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_14: Is that the back of the yards?
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_09: That was yes, that was the phone number.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_09: Yards 884.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_09: Yards 84.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_09: And then look at the top right, what my grandpa had.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_09: My great-grandpa had.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_14: Open day and night.

- 1:17:23SPEAKER_14: I'm an Instagram guy.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_14: Plug it.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_14: What's your handle?
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_14: Um, I don't even know.

- 1:17:39SPEAKER_07: Um, yeah, what is it?
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_07: I think it's Thomas J.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_07: Hurley.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_07: Thomas J.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_07: Hurley at Thomas J.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_07: Hurley, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_07: On Instagram.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_07: And also on uh X or Twitter or whatever we call it.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_07: Yeah, right.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna be shameless too.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_07: Remember our alma mater, right?
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_07: Marisol.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_07: Maris High School.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_07: Oh, yes, yeah.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_07: Dude, I want to talk to you about the Big Fest.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, July.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_14: That's why you came on.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_14: Big Todd and the Monsters, right?
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_07: Big Tad and the Masters, July 18th, yeah.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_07: Over at the stadium at Maris.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_14: I've been to this event.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_14: I've been a little summer fun.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_14: This summer, uh, but I've been to this event.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_14: It's a blast.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_14: It's a good time.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_14: This is what year is this?
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_14: Uh it's gonna be our fifth one.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_14: And it's kind of like a um spin-off of the old St.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_14: Pat's block party that used to be a huge part of, right?
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_07: Yes, exactly.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_07: I was down there for all those years and uh we had a good time with it.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_07: And so the playbook is really complicated.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_07: You get beer and you get some and you get some bands and you get people together.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_07: It's a really complicated uh process here, you know.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_07: Who else is playing?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_07: Who else you got?
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_07: Eddie Ninevee?
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_07: Eddie Ninevee, Eddie Ninevolt, they're they're in between.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_07: But they were gonna start off with the uh backcountry boys.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_07: So our good buddy Kevin Joyce and his kids.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_07: Michael Joyce and his gang coming up from Florida, and they're gonna hit a bunch of spots in Chicago.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_07: They're really good.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_07: They've really matured.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_07: They're a great, great young band.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_07: So they're gonna start us off at 4 30, and then um, yeah, we'll go to 10 and we'll have a good time.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_14: And the biggest coming in.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_14: Yeah, they're uh headliner, yeah.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_14: That's great, man.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_07: Come on around eight eight o'clock.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_14: I love that.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_14: You're uh doing funerals, weddings, booking fests.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_14: Macamara's band, buddy.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_18: Uh Tom to plug your uh uh social media.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_14: Yeah, the or the biz, the funeral hall.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_09: Curly and sun.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_09: I don't even like to plug.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_09: Curly funeral in Chicago Ridge.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we don't do any social media.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_18: Just out of the dignity and respect of yeah, it's just it yeah, that would be kind of hard.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_18: How do you do social media?
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_18: I'm sure places do it.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_14: I'm just always leery to do it.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_14: Yeah, I gotta do some commercials, like some local commercials.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_14: Will Ozzie do one for us?
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_14: Yeah, we'll get yeah.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_14: Dwayne and I will write some ads for you.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_14: That would actually be fun.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_14: Put some ads together.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_14: No, Curly Funeral Home in Chicago Ridge on R111th Street.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_14: Um, it is like I said, it's beautiful, it's very modern.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_14: Thank you.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_14: It's one of the nicest buildings we got on R111th Street there.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_14: When you're buzzing down, would you say?
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_14: Right across the street from uh where Mayor Daly is buried.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_14: Holy sepulchre.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_14: You can see his uh headstone from the from the street.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_07: He didn't this guy doesn't need any plugs, he doesn't need any advertising.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah, but I mean truly the customers just keep all the time.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_07: He really is one of the best because he just he's just he's got a kindness and he's got a great staff that they do really, really well, you know, with families.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_07: And again, we're working together on it.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_07: So one of the best.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_13: One of one of the best.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_07: We're just trying.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_07: We're trying.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_18: Do you mix with all like are you like in touch with all the big other funeral people in the city, like the leaks and the Rayners and like we we we we know some of those guys, there's conferences and stuff like that.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_09: I don't go to a lot of them, but uh you know it's hard to it's hard to connect.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_09: We're all you know, we're all doing our thing, so it's hard to get together.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_09: But um sometimes there's there's conferences where we get together to see some people.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_09: So yeah, we we know a lot of sad people.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_18: What about those women that you went to school with?
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_18: Do you uh still stay in touch with any of them?
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_09: Not not for a while, but for for a couple years afterwards, uh you know, I talked to them here or there, see them here or there, and uh yeah, they were wonderful.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_09: That was just a a great experience in my life.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_09: And I got so many stories about just that that year and a half or two years of Malcolm X that uh I can't tell right now.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_09: But uh we'll read it in your book.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_09: You mentioned this.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_04: I can't believe it's I'm gone though.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_14: Oh, okay.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_14: Yeah, because then I'm gonna be in trouble if I name names now.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_14: The conferences you mentioned, uh you know, saying I sold packaging, I sold paperboard, but I sold bags and custom printed bags.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_14: And one of the markets that we went after was the funeral home market.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_14: We sold reusable bags.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_14: So when people started bringing all these personal effects, they would then leave the funeral home and be like, oh, we got all this stuff.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_14: So we were selling printed with the funeral home name.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_14: Really?
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_14: Actually, it was not a bad.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_14: And I went to all these conferences where there are just booths after booth of display of furniture for the funeral home, clothing, yeah, music, video stuff, hearses, and uh we had a booth there.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_14: And it was fascinating to me to see all the different because actually the c the casket too, one of our biggest customers, and I went to uh Batesville.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_14: Oh, in Indiana.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_14: I went to the the plant.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_14: It's like a they're making cars, it's like an assembly line.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_14: I went to York, the one in uh Richmond, Indiana.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_14: Yep.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_14: The inside of the casket is a ton of paperboard, like the cloth that is around, like it looks like pillow effect, yeah.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_14: It's actually paperboard that the stuff is stapled to.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_14: So there's a ton of uh ton of board in there.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_14: A lot of paper.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_18: Who makes hears anyway?
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_18: What company makes the hearse?
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_09: Well, there's you know, there's Cadillac and Lincoln are two of the big you know, auto dealers that make them, but then they're um fabricated by a few different dealers that will like aftermarket both.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_09: Yeah, so there's there's you know, there's uh three or four that that we've used that we know, but there's a few more.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_09: It's uh but that's kind of that that market is thinned out a little bit, you know.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_09: How many hearses do you does a funeral home need?
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_09: It depends on how how busy you are.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_09: So we have we have we have two Acurlies and two at Shee.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_09: So we have Shehee funeral and two in Orleans, so we have two out there as well, and then two vans at each place, too.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_09: Vans for removals and flowers, stuff like that.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_14: Gotta have a fleet.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_07: So what are you saying?
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_07: Like, so Cadillac makes like the the guts of the vehicle, and then somebody else tricks them out, if you will.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_07: I guess so, yeah.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_07: Right, right.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_18: Puts rims on them and whatnot.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_18: Right.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_18: Yeah.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_18: Hydraulics.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_14: You ever had to be like, hey man, we were booked solid, so uh we're gonna cover it, but we're gonna be in the Tahoe this weekend.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_14: Sorry.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_14: You kind of like doesn't seem to have a big crowd.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_14: No, really, I get appreciate you guys um coming in.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_14: Really enjoy talking with you so much.

- 1:24:23SPEAKER_18: I was supposed to have done it two days, but now I'm just doing it the 19th and the 20th.
