Speaker 1: This is the Bad Hire, the show where epig hiring
• 0:03
Speaker 1: failures and remarkable wins fuel better hiring. Now I'm your host,
• 0:07
Speaker 1: Ken Monroe, and each week we dive into real life
• 0:09
Speaker 1: stories with hrpros, recruiters and leaders who've seen it all.
• 0:14
Speaker 2: Because, let's face it, everyone remembers.
• 0:17
  Speaker 3: The Bad Hire.
• 0:28
Speaker 2: Hey, welcome to the Bad Hire.
• 0:30
Speaker 3: We got another episode coming up, and I'm with Nathan
• 0:32
Speaker 3: and with Dallan Wortham. He's the founder and CEO of
• 0:36
Speaker 3: Charter Connect. Happy to have you, brother.
• 0:38
Speaker 4: Oh, it's great to be I this is I'm so stoked.
• 0:40
Speaker 4: This is gonna be fun.
• 0:41
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 0:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, So tell me. Tell me a little bit about
• 0:44
Speaker 3: Charter Connect. I wanted to let people understand what you do.
• 0:46
Speaker 3: The reason I love it. You're a CEO and you hire,
• 0:50
Speaker 3: You're hiring people. You got a growing company and so
• 0:52
Speaker 3: you've got that. Maybe you have a story of your own,
• 0:55
Speaker 3: but I know you've had a long career or two
• 0:56
Speaker 3: you can talk about. So what's up.
• 0:58
Speaker 2: Tell me about Charter Connect.
• 0:59
Speaker 4: Yes, I was an airline pilot and to become an
• 1:03
Speaker 4: airline pilot, I worked at a market agency to help
• 1:08
Speaker 4: clients has grow their company. And one of our clients
• 1:10
Speaker 4: was a charter school, and it went really well. They
• 1:13
Speaker 4: kind of word of mouth told their friends, and pretty
• 1:16
Speaker 4: soon I had, you know, dozens of charter schools wanting
• 1:19
Speaker 4: me to help with them with their marketing. And so
• 1:22
Speaker 4: I stopped flying and I started a business. Had no
• 1:25
Speaker 4: idea how to do anything in regards to running a business,
• 1:28
Speaker 4: and made a ton of mistakes along the way. But
• 1:32
Speaker 4: it's been a big blessing, a good experience, and here
• 1:35
Speaker 4: we are now with hopefully a little bit more knowledge
• 1:38
Speaker 4: than I had five years ago when I started it.
• 1:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kind of a crazy path from airline pilot
• 1:43
  Speaker 3: to entrepreneur.
• 1:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been break it through a firehouse, aren't you.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: You're in business with your brother, maybe right?
• 1:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, I have a twin brother that looks pretty much
• 1:51
Speaker 4: just like me. Like if I take off my glasses
• 1:52
Speaker 4: and say, you can't tell really and so now I'm
• 1:55
Speaker 4: Sean and I'm dowling again. So yeah, it's.
• 1:58
  Speaker 3: Okay, I know that next time. I don't mean I
• 2:00
Speaker 3: knew he was your brother. I don't think I knew
• 2:01
Speaker 3: it was your twin.
• 2:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, so if you want a cameo, yeah, yeah. So
• 2:05
Speaker 4: it's been really good having someone to be able to
• 2:09
Speaker 4: ride the battle with.
• 2:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, that's awesome. So you know what we
• 2:13
Speaker 3: do here, we we you know, when we started the
• 2:15
Speaker 3: Bad Hire, I just love the idea of of Uh,
• 2:19
Speaker 3: every time I'm hanging around with like talent acquisition pros
• 2:21
Speaker 3: and recruiters and stuff, when we're just when we're just
• 2:24
Speaker 3: chopping it up, that almost always turned to like guys
• 2:27
Speaker 3: telling funny stories, Darius, uh, you know, just about interview
• 2:31
Speaker 3: blow ups or somebody showed up like crazy on the
• 2:34
Speaker 3: first day or like melt down later. And as I
• 2:38
Speaker 3: was talking about, you know, doing the show, I was like,
• 2:40
Speaker 3: I just I don't want to try to be an
• 2:42
Speaker 3: expert to anybody and try to like I got to
• 2:44
Speaker 3: come up with some words of wisdom every single show.
• 2:46
Speaker 3: I just I just want to have fun and uh
• 2:48
Speaker 3: and chop it up and and and and enjoy and
• 2:51
Speaker 3: so came up with the idea of the Bad Hire,
• 2:54
Speaker 3: and we just you know, the goal is to get
• 2:56
Speaker 3: people to submit their stories to us, right, real life
• 2:59
Speaker 3: stories just where hires went wrong. And I do think
• 3:03
Speaker 3: there's learning there, right.
• 3:05
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 3:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean as we talk about them, you could
• 3:08
Speaker 3: be like, bro, I know that story, and you know,
• 3:10
Speaker 3: we probably have all learned a lesson.
• 3:12
Speaker 5: I realize there's a lot of stories out there. Yeah,
• 3:14
Speaker 5: a lot of bad.
• 3:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what's crazy is is the amount of stories
• 3:18
Speaker 3: that we hear and just some of the shenanigans that
• 3:22
Speaker 3: go on in interviews and all that kind of fun stuff.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: So so what we did we put together show. I
• 3:26
Speaker 3: mean we're like ten episodes in or something. This maybe
• 3:28
Speaker 3: this is episode nine. And then to encourage folks to
• 3:34
Speaker 3: to submit their stories to us. To us, we put
• 3:36
Speaker 3: together a ten thousand dollars contest best story of the
• 3:39
Speaker 3: season the season that we be around twenty four shows,
• 3:42
Speaker 3: best story of the season. Our producers who up with
• 3:45
Speaker 3: us together, they'll help select that, will choose it, give
• 3:48
Speaker 3: somebody ten thousand bucks for the best story, which right,
• 3:51
Speaker 3: you love that right?
• 3:52
Speaker 2: So are you are you gonna submit one today?
• 3:54
  Speaker 4: Oh?
• 3:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, you're telling a story hundred dollars, right,
• 3:58
Speaker 6: And what we need to be great, we need great
• 4:02
Speaker 6: marketing to get people.
• 4:04
Speaker 2: To submit stories. So you know, we'll just lean into.
• 4:07
Speaker 3: You for that because that's what you're an expert at.
• 4:09
Speaker 2: So yeah, that's awesome.
• 4:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, So that's uh, that's uh why I started it,
• 4:15
  Speaker 3: and h the first. I mean, I am having a
• 4:18
Speaker 3: T shirt made. You got to listen to some of
• 4:20
Speaker 3: the shows they come out and when you hear this
• 4:22
  Speaker 3: one having a T shirt, Maide says, don't be a
• 4:25
  Speaker 3: cat nuzzler?
• 4:27
  Speaker 2: Is it nuzzler?
• 4:28
  Speaker 3: I think, don't be a cat nuzzler.
• 4:29
  Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a memorable word.
• 4:31
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 4:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna get us. Don't be real small cat nuzzler.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: So it just looks like I'm a cat nezzler when
• 4:37
Speaker 3: you look at closest. Yeah, it's just a great story,
• 4:40
Speaker 3: is it? Is it?
• 4:40
  Speaker 2: Episode two?
• 4:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, got a teams call video call, literally like showing
• 4:45
Speaker 5: up to his team's calls sureless more or less snuggling
• 4:48
Speaker 5: with his cat in bed.
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, lating us the cat in bed on.
• 4:51
Speaker 5: K news that the camera was on and still And
• 4:53
Speaker 5: I saw a video this week you shared with me.
• 4:55
Speaker 3: Maybe like someone telling a story about somebody who just
• 5:00
  Speaker 3: laid in bed.
• 5:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, on a client call, like sir, list in bed
• 5:03
Speaker 5: and hang out with their cat.
• 5:04
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 5:05
Speaker 3: Maybe I don't know. Maybe maybe that's how you read.
• 5:07
Speaker 3: Maybe you're when you're not dressed up like this. Maybe
• 5:10
  Speaker 3: maybe that's what you're.
• 5:11
Speaker 2: Doing at work at home. Yeah, So I don't know.
• 5:15
Speaker 2: So anyway, we take those stories.
• 5:17
Speaker 3: These guys source some stories right now, we're sourcing stories
• 5:21
Speaker 3: off the internet to draw them and get him into
• 5:22
Speaker 3: the show. And then just you know, really hopeful for
• 5:26
Speaker 3: engaging an audience that will would love to tell their
• 5:29
Speaker 3: stories and have some fun. And I so that's what
• 5:31
Speaker 3: we're up to. Yeah, yeah, good stuff.
• 5:33
  Speaker 4: Awesome, awesome, awesome.
• 5:34
  Speaker 2: All right, so.
• 5:36
Speaker 3: Let me I'll kick it off and I'll read I'll
• 5:38
Speaker 3: read one to you and then you know, we're just
• 5:41
  Speaker 3: I'm excited.
• 5:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, I see what the reaction is.
• 5:44
Speaker 3: So this is Hey, I work at an h I
• 5:46
Speaker 3: work at HR at a company with over five hundred employees,
• 5:49
Speaker 3: so I'm used to dealing with wild situations at least
• 5:52
Speaker 3: once a week. I end up dealing with an incident.
• 5:56
Speaker 3: We had to fire young woman for repeatedly taunting and
• 5:59
Speaker 3: harassing their employee. It wasn't a snap decision. There had
• 6:03
Speaker 3: been complaints, documentation, warnings, but eventually it was clear she
• 6:08
Speaker 3: couldn't stay as as part of the process, I escorted
• 6:13
Speaker 3: her back to her desk. This is you know, everyone
• 6:17
Speaker 3: hates this part of letting someone go. When you got
• 6:19
Speaker 3: to do the proverbial walk out.
• 6:20
Speaker 5: And walk out, just like, oh this first sucks.
• 6:25
Speaker 3: Okay. I escorted her back to the desk so she
• 6:27
Speaker 3: could gather her personal belongings.
• 6:30
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: Usually that part is uneventful.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: It is like usually a shame.
• 6:35
Speaker 3: You're just like, let me just get out of here, people,
• 6:38
Speaker 3: grab a coat, a few knick knacks, you know, quietly
• 6:41
  Speaker 3: head out.
• 6:41
  Speaker 2: Not this time.
• 6:42
Speaker 3: She opens her desk drawer, reached in, pulls out a
• 6:45
Speaker 3: full size bottle of wine. Okay, apparently it's the screw
• 6:49
Speaker 3: top was already there was this one. So she cracks
• 6:53
Speaker 3: open this bottle of wine.
• 6:53
Speaker 2: I'm assuming you know she didn't.
• 6:55
Speaker 3: It was a screwtop there, so you know, but before,
• 6:59
Speaker 3: before this hr person could even process it, she tips
• 7:03
Speaker 3: it back and just started chugging the wine.
• 7:07
Speaker 5: Right, this is post firing.
• 7:08
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is this is her rebellious aspired me.
• 7:11
Speaker 3: I'm going to get drunk on the job.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: You could have done this on the parking lot, and
• 7:14
Speaker 4: she wanted to do this.
• 7:15
Speaker 3: So she Yeah, she chugs the whole thing. That's a lot. Yeah,
• 7:23
  Speaker 3: in college, there's a story. Okay, so that's a lot.
• 7:28
Speaker 3: She then pulls out a second one.
• 7:30
Speaker 5: Oh all right, she had a collection in there.
• 7:32
Speaker 3: And did the same thing. So she now as people
• 7:35
Speaker 3: we're standing there, she's just being rebellious, and she drinks
• 7:39
Speaker 3: the second bottle of wine, and you know, just right
• 7:42
Speaker 3: in front of this person, right in the middle of
• 7:44
Speaker 3: the office. The lady says, it's so surreal that for
• 7:47
  Speaker 3: a second I didn't even I didn't even know what
• 7:50
Speaker 3: to do, you know, I didn't know how to stop her,
• 7:53
Speaker 3: didn't know if she should call security or just let
• 7:55
Speaker 3: it go. But they ended up calling the police. I
• 7:56
Speaker 3: assume two bottles of two bottles of wine quickly, uh,
• 8:00
Speaker 3: would make you pretty belligerent if you're angry. And by
• 8:03
Speaker 3: the time the cops arrived, she had completely passed out well,
• 8:09
Speaker 3: and so she was unresponsive, glassy eyd, staring into space,
• 8:12
Speaker 3: and it got serious enough they had to call an ambulance.
• 8:15
  Speaker 5: Oh my god.
• 8:16
Speaker 2: So you think the.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: Story would end there, But later they had to go
• 8:20
Speaker 3: through some of her company email and found that she
• 8:22
Speaker 3: had lots of stranger dozens of notes she had written herself,
• 8:26
Speaker 3: plotting stuff against the employees, plotting revenge, slotting revenge on
• 8:31
  Speaker 3: different employees.
• 8:32
Speaker 5: So, oh my gosh. Yeah, the least they caught her
• 8:34
Speaker 5: before in the oven.
• 8:35
  Speaker 3: Right, I just you know, some I think it's a
• 8:37
Speaker 3: arresting how sometimes just people just like don't like they
• 8:42
Speaker 3: might actually be you start out good and then something
• 8:45
Speaker 3: happens and they go off the rest. Clearly, if someone's
• 8:48
Speaker 3: bringing bottles of wine to work, there's like this multiple
• 8:53
Speaker 3: something you missed on the way in, something the manager's overlooking.
• 8:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, and some people don't mind burning bridges. Well I'm
• 9:00
  Speaker 5: out of here.
• 9:01
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 9:01
Speaker 3: I remember the guy who was called sleeping in the
• 9:04
Speaker 3: story about the guys sleeping on the job behind. Yeah,
• 9:07
Speaker 3: like he rips his shirt off and goes hulk on
• 9:10
Speaker 3: everyone on the way out, screaming, and everyone like, well,
• 9:13
Speaker 3: have come this far.
• 9:13
Speaker 5: I'm not coming back.
• 9:14
Speaker 2: This is not a why wy why? This is a
• 9:15
Speaker 2: chug chug chug event.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: You know, it's like, actually, I actually you know, uh,
• 9:21
Speaker 3: this one actually kind of hurt my soul a little bit.
• 9:23
Speaker 3: It's like, wow, you know, that's just not a great
• 9:24
Speaker 3: place for someone to be. Yeah, you know she did,
• 9:28
Speaker 3: and man, but you know what these what some of
• 9:33
Speaker 3: these hr people face.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: You know, it did strike me early in the deal.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: As you get, as you get bigger, you start growing
• 9:39
Speaker 3: your organization, you you.
• 9:43
  Speaker 2: You have these.
• 9:46
Speaker 3: HR issues, and they just become you know, it's just
• 9:49
Speaker 3: big people's lives, you know. I mean, who knows what happens,
• 9:53
Speaker 3: but and and the HR is constantly intervening, and you know,
• 9:57
Speaker 3: this drama over here, that drama, this person's struggle with
• 10:01
Speaker 3: this or this, you know, maybe some pressure outside or
• 10:05
  Speaker 3: conflict internal.
• 10:07
Speaker 2: You know, it's all kinds of things, you know.
• 10:09
Speaker 3: That's HR folks are just absolute heroes for all they
• 10:12
  Speaker 3: have to deal.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: With, right, I mean, I'm just thinking she probably didn't
• 10:19
Speaker 4: maybe have money for an uber, so she's like, there's
• 10:20
Speaker 4: only one way I'm getting out of it, and it
• 10:24
Speaker 4: has sirens on top, but it's either a police car
• 10:27
  Speaker 4: or an ambulance.
• 10:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's free, right, free right, get carried out?
• 10:30
  Speaker 6: Yeah?
• 10:31
Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, Oh my god. All right. A while back,
• 10:36
Speaker 3: I had an intern who to this day still stands
• 10:39
Speaker 3: out as the worst I've ever supervised. We've heard some
• 10:44
  Speaker 3: bad intern stories.
• 10:45
Speaker 4: Interns are those fun stories though.
• 10:48
Speaker 3: The Yeah, just speaking of interns, Yeah, you know, I'm
• 10:52
Speaker 3: always blown away now by I think this story. I
• 10:56
Speaker 3: think I read it before it was before we came on.
• 10:59
Speaker 3: It's a little bit of that kind of entitlement, you know, Hey,
• 11:02
  Speaker 3: I do this.
• 11:03
  Speaker 2: I don't do that.
• 11:04
Speaker 3: You know, you're finding that a lot and gen Zers
• 11:08
Speaker 3: is resistance to that's not my job to flexibility.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's the whole definitely.
• 11:15
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, Like so from day one he was off.
• 11:19
Speaker 3: You know, he wasn't shy, he wasn't shy. He was inappropriate,
• 11:24
Speaker 3: constantly asking how much money that I made? So how
• 11:29
Speaker 3: much money you make?
• 11:29
  Speaker 4: Bro?
• 11:30
Speaker 2: Tell me how much money you make?
• 11:31
Speaker 3: And not just once or twice, he'd bring it up
• 11:33
Speaker 3: all the time. We'd be in the middle of working
• 11:35
Speaker 3: on something and he'd just slight drop. So seriously, how
• 11:38
Speaker 3: much money do you make? You get that from Like
• 11:42
Speaker 3: if you if you watch enough social media and you
• 11:44
Speaker 3: watch these things where there's actually these guys who just
• 11:47
Speaker 3: walk up to people success.
• 11:48
Speaker 2: Hey, how much money do you make?
• 11:49
Speaker 5: A yeah, I just like guess, uh yeah, tell me
• 11:52
Speaker 5: how you you know?
• 11:53
Speaker 3: And of course they target people who look like they
• 11:55
Speaker 3: have money and then get them to tell their story.
• 11:57
Speaker 5: Right, but still a little bit different.
• 11:59
Speaker 3: Not in work bro right, And I'm not sure it
• 12:03
Speaker 3: was for the same educational reasons the guy on that
• 12:07
Speaker 3: does it, you know, on the street going.
• 12:10
Speaker 4: I mean, when you're an intern, like your job is
• 12:12
Speaker 4: to kind of like learn, absorb and like, I mean,
• 12:16
Speaker 4: we'll kind of just shut up in color and to
• 12:19
Speaker 4: be out asking questions to your potential future.
• 12:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think what salary should I aim for here
• 12:25
Speaker 5: in the next couple of years.
• 12:27
Speaker 2: Fifteen years from now, when I'm your age. I just
• 12:28
Speaker 2: want to make sure if I'm making.
• 12:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, it'll be the stand and trap how much.
• 12:34
Speaker 3: It's not asking how much has that person that started
• 12:36
Speaker 3: last year? How much are they making?
• 12:38
Speaker 2: So how much do you make?
• 12:39
Speaker 3: When I gave him assignments, he looked me dead in
• 12:42
Speaker 3: the eye and say, that's not my job. I don't.
• 12:44
Speaker 3: Sometimes we wonder how people why people stick with these people?
• 12:48
Speaker 3: Imagine hearing that from an interim. And then it escalated.
• 12:51
Speaker 3: He started asking personal questions so out of line. Almost
• 12:54
Speaker 3: couldn't believe that he said it out loud. One day,
• 12:57
Speaker 3: out of nowhere, he blurts, so do you like adult movies?
• 13:04
Speaker 3: At that point, I was documenting everything. I finally reported
• 13:07
Speaker 3: himTo HR and they didn't even hesitate. He was out
• 13:10
Speaker 3: of the internship program immediately. I thought that was the
• 13:13
Speaker 3: end of it, but no, you know, he now goes
• 13:15
Speaker 3: around telling people are we.
• 13:17
  Speaker 2: Win this life?
• 13:19
Speaker 3: Oh don't we get that a lot from these folks
• 13:22
Speaker 3: who like really crash and burn and they've got like
• 13:25
Speaker 3: really weird odd behavior, you know, not great productive behavior. Yes,
• 13:30
Speaker 3: and then they're angry when they're like terminated somehow, it's
• 13:35
Speaker 3: not their fault. You know.
• 13:36
Speaker 4: It's almost like when the culmination of the bad thing
• 13:39
Speaker 4: finally happens. It's almost like they tag the person next
• 13:43
Speaker 4: to them when it happens. It's like burned in their friend.
• 13:47
Speaker 4: You were there when the bad thing happened, so you're
• 13:50
Speaker 4: the bad juju. Yeah, yeah, my life was great up there.
• 13:53
Speaker 3: Tell you, I was able to ask any question I
• 13:55
Speaker 3: wanted up until you know.
• 13:57
Speaker 4: You said and told me how much money you made.
• 13:59
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 13:59
Speaker 3: Right, there is a need. There is a need and
• 14:03
Speaker 3: for in fact, I think we're actually doing some here
• 14:06
Speaker 3: in another month, for like just pure business etique training, right,
• 14:10
Speaker 3: like you know, how to how to how to just
• 14:14
Speaker 3: how to be a pro, to profession, how to be
• 14:16
Speaker 3: a pro, how to be a normal you know, and
• 14:19
Speaker 3: it's really needed, you know, it's I get it all
• 14:22
Speaker 3: the time, and you know, sometimess I don't know that
• 14:26
Speaker 3: I'm disappointed, but when I see young folks in in
• 14:30
Speaker 3: you know, coming up in their career and watching them
• 14:34
Speaker 3: struggle with you know how to act, you know what's appropriate,
• 14:39
Speaker 3: you know, and and I'm not trying to create some
• 14:41
Speaker 3: type of crazy, over controlling culture. But there is just
• 14:45
Speaker 3: a way to act that's just like positive juju into
• 14:47
Speaker 3: your organization. That comes to professionalism and knowing how to act,
• 14:51
Speaker 3: you know. And so and that's not my job is
• 14:57
Speaker 3: never a good thing to say when you're an intern.
• 14:59
  Speaker 2: I don't even I like it.
• 15:00
Speaker 3: I don't care who you are in an organization. If
• 15:02
Speaker 3: you looked at me and said I'm not that's not
• 15:03
  Speaker 3: my job.
• 15:04
Speaker 5: Like bro, the opposite where I feel like your positive
• 15:07
Speaker 5: impact when you're on your culture, when you're able to like, oh,
• 15:09
Speaker 5: I'll take that on. I'll help support whatever way I can,
• 15:13
Speaker 5: instead of to be like ah, no, no, thanks.
• 15:15
Speaker 4: Well, And there's such a difference between that's not my
• 15:17
Speaker 4: job and setting up boundaries and saying hey, like, this
• 15:20
Speaker 4: is my priority right now and if you want me
• 15:22
Speaker 4: to be able to do that, I can, but would
• 15:25
Speaker 4: you like me to let this other priority go so
• 15:27
Speaker 4: I can help you with that, Like that's okay, like
• 15:29
Speaker 4: setting boundaries, But then I say that's not my job.
• 15:31
Speaker 4: I was like, Okay, well, actually, nothing's your job anymore
• 15:34
Speaker 4: because you're gone, right, yeah.
• 15:35
Speaker 3: Right, you don't have to worry about it.
• 15:36
Speaker 2: If you don't, you're not going.
• 15:38
Speaker 4: To right, it's not your job anymore.
• 15:40

Speaker 5: I think Dollan has some stories of hell because he's Allen.
• 16:32
Speaker 3: You got Dylan, You've got some story?
• 16:33
Speaker 4: Oh this is perfect because about I don't know, maybe
• 16:37
Speaker 4: two months ago, right before I got the invite to
• 16:40
Speaker 4: be here, I was having dinner with a friend of
• 16:42
Speaker 4: mine who they were an owner of a franchise that
• 16:47
Speaker 4: sells cookies and it rhymes with stumble. Oh, and uh,
• 16:52
Speaker 4: they had a few differentations.
• 16:53
Speaker 3: Well, by the way, I love it, I love bumble,
• 16:55
Speaker 3: I love stumble cookie.
• 16:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, and so they have the they recently sold, but
• 17:01
Speaker 4: they had multiple different locations and I can I mean,
• 17:05
Speaker 4: this lives rent free in my mind. This story. They
• 17:09
Speaker 4: had an employee we'll call him Richard, and Richard was
• 17:14
Speaker 4: showing some inappropriate media to his co workers when they
• 17:18
Speaker 4: immediately went to the manager to say, hey, like, this
• 17:21
Speaker 4: is what Richard's doing the new guys kind of being
• 17:23
Speaker 4: a little weird. And so obviously they let Richard go
• 17:27
Speaker 4: because Richard's doing some inappropriate things. They walking out to
• 17:33
Speaker 4: his car and he's kicking and screaming and not wanting
• 17:36
Speaker 4: to leave, demanding an explanation. But then they say, hey,
• 17:39
Speaker 4: come back on Monday for your final check and whatnot
• 17:43
Speaker 4: and we'll send you on your way. And so he
• 17:47
Speaker 4: didn't want to come back in person because he was embarrassed.
• 17:49
Speaker 4: He was completely to imagine, Yeah, but they said, no,
• 17:54
Speaker 4: you need to come in person because we had like
• 17:56
Speaker 4: the paper check for you to just come in. And
• 17:58
Speaker 4: so this and completely covered in black with a ski mask, sunglasses, everything,
• 18:05
Speaker 4: walks in and goes up to the counter and he
• 18:09
Speaker 4: doesn't say a word, like he's just standing there and
• 18:12
Speaker 4: the person here, yeah, like can I help you? Like, yeah,
• 18:16
Speaker 4: do you need it? There wasn't wouldn't respond. And so
• 18:19
Speaker 4: after about twenty seconds of just like no response from
• 18:22
Speaker 4: this man and all in black, who's probably scaring her,
• 18:25
Speaker 4: she goes back to the manager says, there's a guy,
• 18:27
Speaker 4: I am black. I think it's Richard. It looks like
• 18:32
Speaker 4: Richard's He won't respond. I think he probably came in
• 18:36
Speaker 4: for his check. And so they go out and like, Richard,
• 18:40
Speaker 4: is that you nothing, won't say anything, and so he
• 18:43
Speaker 4: finally on a piece of paper, rights, I am the
• 18:47
Speaker 4: twin brother of Richard. Okay, this is Ricky, and so
• 18:52
Speaker 4: he passes them the note this yeah, yeah right, and
• 18:56
Speaker 4: I'm the twins so yeah, if if you really are
• 18:59
Speaker 4: the twin brother, Richard like, we can't give you the check,
• 19:02
Speaker 4: and you give me your ID, and after you know everything,
• 19:07
Speaker 4: he finally gives him the ID and uh, they passed
• 19:10
Speaker 4: the check. He goes out, But that's not the end
• 19:13
Speaker 4: of the story. He keeps coming back to kind of
• 19:17
Speaker 4: taunt and uh, he starts like riding things on the
• 19:20
Speaker 4: windows and kind of vandalism and things of that nature.
• 19:23
Speaker 4: And then they get like a I don't know if
• 19:29
Speaker 4: it was something legally where he could come around anymore,
• 19:34
Speaker 4: but like a restraining order kind of thing. Yeah, you
• 19:37
Speaker 4: think it's over, but then he starts doing door dash orders.
• 19:43
Speaker 3: I got your food and he's no, so he's ordering
• 19:45
  Speaker 3: from this place.
• 19:46
  Speaker 4: Yeah he is.
• 19:47
  Speaker 3: Now he.
• 19:49
Speaker 4: Is no longer strategy the twin of Richard, and he's
• 19:53
Speaker 4: no longer this black mass man. He's just richer and like, Richard,
• 19:56
Speaker 4: you can't be here, and he keeps taking these door
• 19:59
Speaker 4: dash orders and finally Richard go on, Richard, you can't
• 20:02
Speaker 4: be anywhere Richard, and they're like screaming at him and
• 20:04
Speaker 4: just like shoot, shoot, get out of here, Richard. And so
• 20:06
  Speaker 4: now he's kind of a I mean I've heard that
• 20:10
Speaker 4: he doesn't come around anymore. But yeah, pretty wild story.
• 20:13
Speaker 5: Dang, that's crazy. Yeah, so he finally stopped coming around.
• 20:17
Speaker 4: Yeah maybe, And they.
• 20:19
Speaker 5: Never confirmed if it was actually him or a twin brother,
• 20:22
Speaker 5: because with the ID like to just say brother's yeah,
• 20:26
  Speaker 5: I don't know.
• 20:26
  Speaker 3: Yah, don't.
• 20:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think some people lose.
• 20:29
Speaker 3: It's kind of crazy. The stories that we get have
• 20:31
Speaker 3: people who like when they lose their job and they
• 20:35
Speaker 3: should have yeah, right, and they it just reveals is
• 20:40
Speaker 3: like there must there's like this, there's like a different
• 20:43
Speaker 3: person right under the surface that they're just trying to conceal. Yeah,
• 20:47
Speaker 3: and then this comes you know, it just comes out. Yeah,
• 20:50
Speaker 3: And it happens a lot in retail because you know,
• 20:54
Speaker 3: you know, retail just has such high demand for people
• 20:57
Speaker 3: that's so hard to find.
• 20:58
Speaker 4: You know, well, you just and I feel like, you know,
• 21:02
Speaker 4: when you're a kid and you're like playing hide and
• 21:04
Speaker 4: seek and you're hiding and so on finances like hey,
• 21:06
Speaker 4: I see you, you're right there, and you'd like don't move,
• 21:09
Speaker 4: and like I see you, you can move, and you're
• 21:12
Speaker 4: still not moving, Like, oh, I don't want to be caught.
• 21:14
Speaker 4: I feel like that kind of happens when people fall
• 21:17
Speaker 4: into this I don't know, fantasy land of like this
• 21:22
Speaker 4: lie and they just don't want to let go of
• 21:24
Speaker 4: it because it's painful to realize, like I got caught. Yeah,
• 21:29
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 21:29
Speaker 3: Humility embarrassment Humility are really powerful, really powerful emotions embarrassment
• 21:39
Speaker 3: that stop people from being able to take accountability, to
• 21:43
Speaker 3: tell lies and to do other things. That is such
• 21:46
  Speaker 3: a tough emotion.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: So Nathan, what's up? What you got?
• 21:50
  Speaker 3: Brother? All right?
• 21:51
Speaker 5: Don't have any of my own like down as I
• 21:54
Speaker 5: think these are just from Reddit. So all right. As
• 21:58
Speaker 5: an office manager, I once high a new employee. On
• 22:01
Speaker 5: his very first day, he was told to fill out
• 22:03
Speaker 5: his new higher paperwork. Pretty standard stuff I put. I
• 22:07
Speaker 5: put him into an office. He came back a little
• 22:09
Speaker 5: while later. He handed me the forms. I scanned him
• 22:12
Speaker 5: over to HR like usual, and about twenty minutes later
• 22:15
Speaker 5: I get an HR or. I get a call from
• 22:17
Speaker 5: the HR rep and the HR rep is laughing and
• 22:20
Speaker 5: she tells me that he's filled out his name in
• 22:22
Speaker 5: all the forms as Batman. So I sit Batman down.
• 22:28
Speaker 5: I sent him down. I tell him to redo the
• 22:29
Speaker 5: paved work with his actual legal name. He nods, no problem,
• 22:34
Speaker 5: sorry about that. He fills out again, and he hands
• 22:37
Speaker 5: it back and it says Batman. It doesn't say that
• 22:40
Speaker 5: Bruce went No, still a Batman.
• 22:42
Speaker 2: He just didn't get ways that would have been good?
• 22:44
Speaker 3: That would that would have been good.
• 22:45
Speaker 5: Yeah. By the end of the day, I had him
• 22:47
Speaker 5: on a call with HR where they explained very directly.
• 22:51
Speaker 5: If he does not fill out this paperwork correctly, he
• 22:53
Speaker 5: would not have the job, and it should have ended there.
• 22:56
Speaker 5: But it did not. From that day forward, it was
• 22:59
Speaker 5: one ridiculous thing after another with this guy. At least
• 23:01
Speaker 5: once a week he'd be in my office for some
• 23:04
Speaker 5: weird issue. Then one morning he comes in completely serious
• 23:07
Speaker 5: and announces that he's officially legally changed his name to Batman.
• 23:12
Speaker 5: So he saw that stame true? Yeah, so fine, we'll
• 23:15
Speaker 5: give him a fresh, W four new paperwork. He fills
• 23:19
Speaker 5: it out again, probably signing Batman. Yeah so, But then
• 23:23
Speaker 5: HR comes back and says, hey, we need proof of
• 23:26
Speaker 5: your name change for the system, like legal legal proof.
• 23:30
Speaker 5: So he I told him he needs to provide documentation.
• 23:33
Speaker 5: He said, no problem, I'll bring in tomorrow. And the
• 23:35
Speaker 5: next day comes, and the next day and the next week.
• 23:38
Speaker 5: Weeks go by, excuse after excuse, and he lost it.
• 23:41
Speaker 5: He forgot it. It was at home. Finally we figure
• 23:44
Speaker 5: out the truth. He never actually changed it at all.
• 23:46
Speaker 5: He just wanted to be called Batman.
• 23:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, bro, I get it, and I love that.
• 23:50
Speaker 5: Part of me is on his side a little bit.
• 23:51
Speaker 2: Yeah no, I mean, if you could be called Batman. Yeah,
• 23:54
Speaker 2: you know, Dylan, what if.
• 23:56
Speaker 3: You could just like tell people just call me Superman brom.
• 23:59
Speaker 5: Super confusing because I guess they know his name in
• 24:02
Speaker 5: the interview process, like is he on LinkedIn as Batman?
• 24:05
Speaker 3: I just got to tell you some of these stories, man,
• 24:07
  Speaker 3: there's like there's a sign so early, and they don't
• 24:11
Speaker 3: like just cut, you know, they just just keep going.
• 24:15
Speaker 3: And you're like, have you ever seen that that TikTok
• 24:18
Speaker 3: where the guy goes to interviews online and he's just
• 24:23
Speaker 3: like like one of him. He's like sitting at a
• 24:25
Speaker 3: drive through eating and he's like, no, no, no, I'm not
• 24:28
Speaker 3: at a drive through. And she's like you're clearly at
• 24:30
Speaker 3: a drive through and he's like, no, no, no, I'm not
• 24:31
Speaker 3: at a drive through.
• 24:32
  Speaker 5: I'm a friend.
• 24:32
Speaker 3: Try and don't a stun Like how long they They're
• 24:35
Speaker 3: like no, you aren't, and they have, you know, trying
• 24:38
Speaker 3: to get back to the interview, and I'm like, some.
• 24:41
Speaker 5: People are just desperate to hire.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: I guess it just really speaks to how hard it
• 24:46
Speaker 3: is to find great talent. You know, You're just like, wow,
• 24:50
Speaker 3: if you're willing to stay on the phone after you know,
• 24:55
Speaker 3: and this guy does crazy stunts up with him.
• 24:57
Speaker 5: And maybe he's the mass mass crusader and accounting and
• 25:00
Speaker 5: maybe having the best I don't know.
• 25:02
Speaker 4: I mean, we're just taught ever since we're little, like
• 25:04
Speaker 4: don't judge a book by its cover, like like give people,
• 25:07
Speaker 4: you know, chance street others like you'd like to be treated.
• 25:10
Speaker 4: And in balancing that with like this dude things he's Batman.
• 25:15
Speaker 3: So all right, what's up?
• 25:17
  Speaker 2: All right?
• 25:18
Speaker 5: Second one, last one for the day. At a small
• 25:20
Speaker 5: company I worked for, we hired a receptionist, let's call
• 25:23
Speaker 5: her Jin. At first, she came across as friendly, maybe
• 25:26
Speaker 5: a little bit quirky, but I started noticing some small
• 25:29
Speaker 5: lies in her stories. Nothing huge at first, just weird
• 25:32
Speaker 5: details that didn't really quite add up, but I didn't
• 25:34
Speaker 5: really think much of it. One day, HR sent out
• 25:37
Speaker 5: an all staff email, and it said that Jin's husband
• 25:40
Speaker 5: had passed away, and so naturally everyone had felt awful.
• 25:43
Speaker 5: We collected money, said flowers. We gave her two full
• 25:47
Speaker 5: weeks off for bereavement, and when she came back, she
• 25:50
Speaker 5: really looked apart. She was shaken, she was quiet. You know,
• 25:53
Speaker 5: the whole office was walking on eggshells around her. A
• 25:56
Speaker 5: few weeks later, I happened to be covering the desk
• 25:59
Speaker 5: for her when the phone and I answered, is a
• 26:00
Speaker 5: man's voice on the other end and said, this is Frank,
• 26:04
Speaker 5: Jen's husband. Uh, and I froze the Frank, the husband
• 26:09
Speaker 5: that we all thought was gone, was on the other line.
• 26:11
  Speaker 4: Yeah, he resurrected.
• 26:12
  Speaker 2: She immediately was like, it's a miracle, it's a live.
• 26:16
Speaker 5: So then later over drinks with Hr, I'm telling them
• 26:19
Speaker 5: the whole story, and I'm expecting shocked in awe, and
• 26:22
Speaker 5: instead they kind of shrugged. They already knew. It turns
• 26:25
Speaker 5: out that Jen had faked her own husband's i'm a
• 26:29
Speaker 5: living to get extra vacation time. And the only reason
• 26:32
Speaker 5: that she got away with it was because she threatened
• 26:34
Speaker 5: to expose the company president's affairs of anybody pushed back.
• 26:40
Speaker 5: So it was an inside job.
• 26:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, the drama stacks.
• 26:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, so it was just multiple layers of some lies,
• 26:49
Speaker 5: some drama. And also it's a big cover up, so
• 26:52
  Speaker 5: it's a multi problem.
• 26:54
Speaker 3: And Jen was a pro it was collected information to well,
• 26:59
Speaker 3: I would make her at least give them money back.
• 27:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, people actually raised took up some collections around the office.
• 27:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like the backbreaker for me is like if
• 27:08
Speaker 3: you're an organization and you're like, like.
• 27:10
Speaker 5: I gave Frank twenty bucks. Yeah, yeah, yeah, just crazy.
• 27:14
  Speaker 5: I just don't understand.
• 27:15
Speaker 3: How do you have a bereavement policy yet? That's a
• 27:18
Speaker 3: really interesting thing. No, And I've had a you know,
• 27:22
Speaker 3: over the years, I've had multiple that happened, and and
• 27:27
Speaker 3: we had one of our employees lose his wife another husband,
• 27:33
Speaker 3: you know, and it's just the bereavement, the bereavement policies
• 27:38
Speaker 3: that comes standard, right, Yeah, that's exactly right.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: So it was just nuts when you know, you're faced with.
• 27:47
Speaker 3: It and you're like this bereavement policy, what he gets
• 27:53
Speaker 3: seven days? You know, it's like yeah, yeah, you're just
• 27:56
Speaker 3: like I if my child died, I would you you better?
• 28:00
Speaker 2: I'll see you next year, bro, Yeah, I'll be a fun.
• 28:02
  Speaker 5: I mean yeah.
• 28:04
Speaker 2: And so I don't know, I just I think about that.
• 28:09
Speaker 3: We really extended ours and and and just went full
• 28:12
Speaker 3: blown where you know, and I think we just kind
• 28:17
Speaker 3: of crafted it to instead of having the days we
• 28:20
Speaker 3: just did, there's just a lot of trust implemented into
• 28:24
Speaker 3: the processes, like we're going to give them the days
• 28:27
Speaker 3: they need, right, not you.
• 28:29
Speaker 2: Get twenty one days and by the way, on the
• 28:30
  Speaker 2: twenty second.
• 28:31
Speaker 4: Day, you gotta be back, yeah, because I mean if
• 28:35
Speaker 4: they come back, they might be back physically.
• 28:37
Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, yeah, it's just you know, it's
• 28:41
Speaker 3: it's just I think it's just one of the responsibilities
• 28:43
Speaker 3: as CEO as a company you just take on. It's like,
• 28:45
Speaker 3: if I'm going to build a culture in which everyone
• 28:47
Speaker 3: loves to work here, right, and we love each other,
• 28:49
  Speaker 3: and we're after.
• 28:50
  Speaker 2: This common vision.
• 28:51
Speaker 3: If someone's life has changed, it altered in such a
• 28:53
Speaker 3: terrible way, right, I mean, how do I approach that
• 28:59
Speaker 3: with some rubbers that way of you know, hey, you know,
• 29:03
Speaker 3: so sorry you lost your loved one, your kid, your husband,
• 29:06
Speaker 3: whatever it is. We're going to give you five days
• 29:10
Speaker 3: and after that, you know, we're off. Took having to
• 29:12
Speaker 3: pay you hr. People probably think I'm crazy, but it's just,
• 29:16
Speaker 3: you know, our mentality after facing that was like we
• 29:21
Speaker 3: there is no one size fits all here. Some people
• 29:23
Speaker 3: need to get back to work. Some people like this
• 29:25
Speaker 3: is how I, you know, this is how I this
• 29:28
Speaker 3: is how I move forward. And others are like I
• 29:31
Speaker 3: just want to lay in bed for you know, six months.
• 29:34
Speaker 2: And you know you gotta be okay with either.
• 29:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, whatever. Everyone deals with it differently.
• 29:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's harder, certainly harder when you become
• 29:42
Speaker 3: a massive organization. You know, certainly have much much harder.
• 29:45
Speaker 4: Some many moving pieces.
• 29:47
Speaker 3: But personally, you know, where we're at in our and
• 29:50
Speaker 3: our journey is it's just like a really good place.
• 29:53
Speaker 3: You know, it's a really good place. Is as a
• 29:55
Speaker 3: CEO say, you're able to it's just you're able to
• 29:59
Speaker 3: turn knobs and effect culture. And I love that part.
• 30:02
  Speaker 2: So yeah, all.
• 30:03
Speaker 3: Right, guys, I want to wrap up.
• 30:07
Speaker 2: But before we did, I just wanted to this. I
• 30:08
  Speaker 2: wanted to remind.
• 30:12
Speaker 3: Remind us that we've got this ten thousand dollars contests
• 30:16
Speaker 3: that that I got on that is absolutely trying to win. Yes, uh,
• 30:21
Speaker 3: he's going to rewrite his story and send us.
• 30:22
Speaker 2: A picture of Batman.
• 30:24
Speaker 3: But that's if you win this, we will like put
• 30:28
Speaker 3: this Batman dude up.
• 30:29
Speaker 2: But ye, do this whole video montage. We should do,
• 30:32
Speaker 2: we should, we should.
• 30:33
Speaker 3: Okay, here's what we have to do.
• 30:35
  Speaker 5: This couple opportunities.
• 30:36
Speaker 3: We're gonna let's put together a video of that story
• 30:39
Speaker 3: of like this dude. Constantly we're in a Batman costume
• 30:43
Speaker 3: and word, Yeah, we have a Batman around here?
• 30:46
Speaker 2: Have you ever seen that? No, we have an employee he.
• 30:49
Speaker 3: Likes to put on the bat.
• 30:50
  Speaker 5: Is he batman?
• 30:50
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 30:51
Speaker 3: Well, in some of the events we've had he's been batyuddy.
• 30:55
Speaker 3: But we've got this, we've got this contest going on.
• 30:57
Speaker 3: We've got about twenty four episodes in a season. The

• 31:18

• 31:20

• 31:25
