- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12episodes four forty two and four forty three. Ace's Convoy begins battle on the
- 0:18lowest floor, level six, and the Ultimate Team has formed Shaking impelled down.
- 0:27In these episodes, we have got a team of usual suspects put together.
- 0:34Y'all know. I'm a fan of this, and we get to see
- 0:37Crocodile's power work again and it's wonderful. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to
- 1:00the show everyone. I am Natah. Oh good, I am Natasha.
- 1:04Sorry. David is in the chat and he couldn't hear me earlier, and
- 1:07we were wondering if it was maybe, you know, an issue with me,
- 1:11but it seems like he can hear me, so we're good. Thank
- 1:15you very much to Florian for commissioning this episode. I was really glad that
- 1:19we only had two episodes to cover this time, because I have so much
- 1:23that I want to talk about. Like the past few groupings, I have
- 1:27wanted to talk more than I mean it went over. I think for both
- 1:33of the most recent ones. There is just so much delightful goodness in this
- 1:41arc, and I I'm trying to temper my excitement because you know, I
- 1:53was so thrilled with the thriller Bark arc. I didn't mean to do that.
- 1:59It's fun, though, I was so thrilled with it, and it
- 2:05sort of felt like it ended on a bit of a whimper for me.
- 2:07So while I definitely loved that arc and how like totally goofy it was,
- 2:13there were parts of it that I just felt like, Man, this had
- 2:15more potential, and I feel like you didn't really do with it what you
- 2:19could have. So you know, that may be the way that this arc
- 2:23wraps for me. But I feel so guilty, you guys, at how
- 2:28much I'm loving this arc Because none of Lufy's compatriots are in it. I
- 2:35really feel like I shouldn't be this hype when everybody's gone and off doing their
- 2:40own things. Like I just feel disloyal, you know what I mean,
- 2:46And I can't help it. It just feels like the story is paced so
- 2:50much better because we don't have a million people that we need to check in
- 2:54on, and while we do check in it, it feels like we're allowed
- 3:00to check in in a more natural way versus the obligatory sort of way that
- 3:07we were having to before. And also like there is something to be said
- 3:10for the fact that whenever he has his crew with him and they go off
- 3:17and face their you know, the whatever, like sidekick or henchmen, they
- 3:25we know that ultimately they're going to win somehow, you know, and it's
- 3:34just feels like a chore occasionally, like it's something on a list that we
- 3:38have to check off. Okay, so you know we're going up against so
- 3:42and so and his henchmen are so and so, so we're gonna assign each
- 3:46of his henchmen to one of the crew members, and how are they gonna
- 3:50And it's always like, you know, I shouldn't be saying always that's unfair,
- 3:55but it is very frequently kind of the book, and in some ways
- 4:01that's fine. You know, to a degree. Doing things by the book
- 4:04is part of what draws you to a series, is that you know what
- 4:08you're getting and you like the format and the formula of it. And that's
- 4:13not an inherently bad thing, but I just think that it's remarkable how pulling
- 4:17away from doing it that way has seemed to do the show so many favors
- 4:24in this arc. So all right, let's get into this here, because
- 4:31I, like I said, have so much that I want to say.
- 4:36So the way that this like starts off, we pick up where we had
- 4:45left off with. You know, Lufy is with Iva, having just eaten
- 4:54and regained most of his strength, and poor Bonclay is on the ground having
- 5:02like fucked himself up pretty good, trying to urge Loufy to get well,
- 5:09he like sacrifices his There's almost a sense to me like Bonclay infused his vitality
- 5:18into Loofy and it was sucked out of him, and so Lufy is okay,
- 5:24but now Bonclay is not and uh so, yeah, he's on the
- 5:29ground here, and we have a reminder about Ace and the situation with him.
- 5:38Iva tells h Lufy to pull out the VIV card and when he does,
- 5:45this is actually I think a little bit later but when they get to
- 5:48a different level, the VIV card is moving like in a really weird way,
- 5:57and that turns out to be because Ace has been removed from the facility,
- 6:00so he's not directly above them anymore. So yeah, then we go
- 6:06to Magellan, who has come to Ace and is telling him like we are
- 6:12about to move you to a new location, and Ace is giving him that
- 6:15death glare, which I have to assume he would be doing anyway. But
- 6:21I also think that if he knows Lufy is in the building, that he
- 6:26must resent it even more that he's being moved just in time for when Lufy's
- 6:31trying to track him down. You know, so we have all of our
- 6:36friends that have agreed to help Loofy. It's such a weird scene because Lufy
- 6:44just goes running, sprinting down the stairs and he says gumgum pistol and takes
- 6:50down all of the guards who are waiting and trying to stop him. He
- 6:57is being like, they have these weird traps that create like a grid of
- 7:03spears that pop out, and Lufy is able to just dance in amongst them
- 7:09like an acrobat. And then when they're trying to figure out where aces,
- 7:17Iva is standing over one of the guards and says I'm going to need you
- 7:23for a moment and puts the guard over his shoulder, And I'm thinking,
- 7:30like, what is what is he gonna do with this guy? Well,
- 7:33we will see this later. At this point, Lufy's doing gumgum ricochet and
- 7:39I love that all of these different transponder snails are filming Lufy going through them
- 7:46like a hot knife through butter. It's so embarrassing to them. They really
- 7:53were trying, and they are getting to level six and it is like no
- 7:58problem for them at all. And the guards that are watching this are actively
- 8:03sweating because they know eventually they're probably going to be expected to go up against
- 8:07this guy themselves, and he made such short work of the others that is
- 8:13just really not something to look forward to. So this is when we get
- 8:20to level six and Lofey begins looking around for Ace. I love that this
- 8:24fucking guard is still over. I have of a shoulder just kicking, and
- 8:30h Loviy just starts yelling, Ace, where are you? Because the place
- 8:35feels very open. It's like it seems much more like a solitary room than
- 8:41it does a whole floor of the facility, the way the others have,
- 8:46like every other place in this prison has really seemed like its own ecosystem in
- 8:54a way, but this genuinely feels like we're just kind of in a weird
- 8:58little wing, which makes sense because it seems like this is sort of the
- 9:01lesser used area a lot of people don't even know it exists. So this
- 9:07is when Iva makes use of the guard and injects him with female hormone.
- 9:15So I'm like waiting for a terrible reaction, and the guard transforms into a
- 9:22woman and then looks down and says, is this me? And Iva says,
- 9:28it's the you you were always afraid to be. I'm beautiful. You've
- 9:35been reborn, my dear, You're no longer a jailer. You're a new
- 9:39comma. Now, Oh thank you. What have I been doing all of
- 9:46these years? My gosh, I don't know how I can ever repay you.
- 9:50Iva. I am absolutely living for this, like you know it.
- 9:58It was questionable, although I didn't have a real problem with it when Iva
- 10:05did this to somebody who was like just going to be taking offense at the
- 10:09fact that they were seen as a woman now and that it was an insult
- 10:13to his masculinity. But this guard being like, finally I am who I
- 10:22was supposed to be. I love it, And I can't tell, like
- 10:28I have a saying it's who you've always wanted to be. I couldn't tell
- 10:33whether I've actually knew that or if And like it's supposed to be that Iva
- 10:37has a sort of sixth sense about people who are questioning their their gender identity,
- 10:43you know what I'm saying, or if it's just that gender. Like
- 10:48the way that Iver saw this guard react meant that I've followed the cues and
- 10:56was just reading the room, you know what I'm saying. So anyway,
- 11:01Uh, they ask her where's Ace, and she just like freely points and
- 11:07says that way, But he's not. We've finally gotten here and he's been
- 11:11fucking taken away, which truly is so infuriating you guys, Like you know,
- 11:18it's the sort of thing that makes total sense if you know where he's
- 11:20headed. Just get the guy out of there. And then what but after
- 11:24everything to like finally reach this floor and he's already been removed. I just
- 11:30really felt for Lufy on this. It's like, you know, getting changed,
- 11:37washing your face, getting into bed and you're all cozied up and blankets
- 11:43are perfect, and then you realize that, like you left your book that
- 11:46you were intending to read out in the kitchen or something, that's exactly what
- 11:52it's like. I hope that my comparison to leaving a book out in the
- 11:56kitchen that you understand, I am direct equating it with realizing that your brother
- 12:03has been removed for execution. I hope that that came across that that's those
- 12:07are equivalent things to me. So anyway, yeah, he gets there,
- 12:16cel is half empty because you've got this other fishman, Jimbay, who is
- 12:20really wild looking. He sees Loofy and knows like the straw hat and goes,
- 12:26oh, man, that's got to be him, and he says,
- 12:33are you that straw hat? You're a moment late he was here. They
- 12:39took him to the elevator for the prison chance transfer. There's still a chance
- 12:45that you can catch him, and I've sees Jim May and recognized the hime
- 12:50Iva has apparently just really rocked with a pretty like mixed crew, because I
- 12:58keep saying, she I'm sure that they would not care which pronoun I use.
- 13:05They know everybody, and it seems like on a very personal level.
- 13:13So they take off to the elevator. Jimbay at this point has not attempted
- 13:22to join them, which I was surprised by. Now that comes later,
- 13:26but I really thought in this moment that he would be sort of like,
- 13:28maybe I'll go ahead and ask if they'll let me out and I can help,
- 13:33and we find out that, like when Ace was saying Lufy is here,
- 13:37Jim Bay was sort of going, are you sure, dude? That
- 13:41feels pretty far fetched, and he had said this earlier, but he continues
- 13:46to sort of try and bring Ace down to earth. I think he really
- 13:50doesn't want him to get his hopes up, and he seems to feel a
- 13:54little bit goofy that he was so wrong. So our friends are sprinting toward
- 14:03the elevator and Iva is trying to like use the operating system of the elevator,
- 14:09which is just looks like it's the sort of pulley thing, trying to
- 14:13get it back up, but instead it's another trap. And there's like a
- 14:18weight with spikes that comes plummeting down almost takes Lufy's fucking head off. And
- 14:26I have a looks down and it's just like, oh, they can't let
- 14:30things be convenient for us. We'll have to find ourselves another way because they're
- 14:35watching us. Let's go back to the stairs, and Loofy is like I
- 14:45and just the fact that he is still keeping up after everything. I know
- 14:50he's basically fully healed here, but it's really I'm I just want to say
- 14:58that I'm proud of him, which feels silly. But so they drop a
- 15:03cage around the staircase as well so that they can't get to it. Then
- 15:09this like fog of gas comes down, which it turns out is not a
- 15:13killer gas, but it will send you to sleep, and Lufy is just
- 15:18going, oh, it's fine, I don't care. I'm gonna do what
- 15:22I'm gonna do, which is what he already always does, charges into it
- 15:26and drops like a fucking stone. Meanwhile, is just like, did he
- 15:33really just do that? Oh my god, And the guys who are in
- 15:35the cells around the mourning them are just yelling like, get out of here,
- 15:41move and they are only able to just get that out before they collapse.
- 15:46Also, so up in the observation room, they're watching finally that this
- 15:56gas seems to be working after everything else fucking failed. And this is Hannibal
- 16:03and he's saying this, now that I've done this, I can keep my
- 16:08job now to place the blame for this entire fiasco on Magellan, And one
- 16:15of the guys says, uh, sir, the microphone is still on,
- 16:18and he just yells come on Man, and I love that when we go
- 16:22to Magellan, he doesn't have any reaction because I think he just assumes anything
- 16:27Hannibal does is him attempting to undermine him in some ways. So he just
- 16:32does not take it that personally, which I think is really funny. And
- 16:38he turns to Ace and is just like, huh, it's a pretty funny
- 16:44how Lufy just managed to make it's a level six like a minute after we
- 16:48took you away, So I having really sucks. Huh. And Ace turns
- 16:53around with this like genuine look on his face, and I kind of wanted
- 16:57to yell at Ace, and I know that this is just me being like
- 17:02the pettiest bit you've ever met in your life. But that's exactly the reaction
- 17:07Michellen wants. Ace. Don't give him a satisfaction, just keep that shit
- 17:11inside, like you know what I'm saying. But again, that's me just
- 17:15I don't like to dance to other people's tunes. If it seems like somebody
- 17:21is really trying to get a specific reaction out of me, I am instinctually
- 17:26going to try and give them the opposite of what they want. And it's
- 17:30it has nothing to do with whether or not I like you. It's just
- 17:33like an instinct with me, you know what I'm saying. So anyway,
- 17:38fucking loofy, dead ass asleep here with this this fog that they put down,
- 17:45and the like the situation here, with the fact that he is asleep,
- 17:52the fact that they have an eye on him and they know exactly where
- 17:55he is. They are very certain they've got him well in hand. He's
- 18:00not getting away, and they're gonna throw him into the same cell that Ace
- 18:03used to be in. And they tell Ace like he's gonna get to know
- 18:07some of the torment that you've experienced as well. And Ace loses it here
- 18:15and decides to try and make a run for it. Now, this is
- 18:18remarkable because he is just going through like he's got these manacles on, and
- 18:23Guys, I really really cannot stop laughing at the fact that these manacles are
- 18:30his hands are in front of him. That's just such a no no,
- 18:36don't do that. Don't when you're dealing with the prisoner of his caliber.
- 18:41That's the rooky mistake, kiddos. You don't chain their hands together in front
- 18:45of them anyway. So we get this amazing moment that I loved so much
- 18:55because I feel like it's something that kind of is what I am always thinking,
- 19:02but never really happens with the kind of like emphasis that it happens in
- 19:07this scene. Ace is you know, left right with this this trident and
- 19:12really like killing it, and everything is feeling like he's a badass and maybe
- 19:21he's actually going to manage to like take care of this. And then as
- 19:26every man is like going down like a fucking sack of flower, Magellan just
- 19:33steps forward and grabs the end of the trident between his thumb and forefinger.
- 19:41And what I mean about this is the emphasis of how small this weapon is
- 19:48in proportion to Magellan and how little strength it takes him to bring it all
- 19:53to a complete halt. This is something that I think about with these villains
- 19:59a lot, because so many people in this universe are oversized. They're all
- 20:03wildly different sizes. So you've got folks that it just feels like they should
- 20:08be able to handle a fight in this manner, and instead, for whatever
- 20:15you know scene that you're in, we have to have them fighting at a
- 20:21level that suggests this character who is a tenth of their size is as strong
- 20:26as they are in a way that doesn't really it doesn't always read like it
- 20:33works, fe know what I'm saying. So I just really really enjoyed this
- 20:38even though it doesn't you know, like Ace like drops the trident and he
- 20:41backs up, so there's a confrontation of a different kind, but it's just
- 20:45wild, like he runs away here and Magellan just grabs Ace. Like.
- 20:53When I say grab, I don't mean like, oh, he grabs him
- 20:57by the arm, because his hand is almost the same size as Ace's entire
- 21:06body, so he just reaches out and grabs Ace like by the back of
- 21:12the head and presses him into the floor until his hand is completely covering Ace
- 21:21from the top of his head to the base of his torso, and he
- 21:26is flattened like somebody just draped several weighted blankets over him. And I,
- 21:36you know, again, this is just something that is so frequently on my
- 21:41mind that it should work this way, and it doesn't. It just often
- 21:48doesn't work this way in the show, and I really enjoyed getting to see
- 21:52it in a way that's like, obviously, we couldn't have this happen for
- 22:00Loofy. Usually he went up against Magellan and he actually put up a fairly
- 22:06solid fight in some ways, despite the fact that he obviously wound up getting
- 22:11poisoned and was in pretty bad shape. But you never see this sort of
- 22:17like humiliating tactic used on Loufy. It's very very rare, and a part
- 22:23of me is like glad of that, and another part of me kind of
- 22:26wishes that we would because I just feel like it's an elephant in the room.
- 22:33How much huger the villains are than our guys. That should just be
- 22:38an inherent advantage that he's rarely taken advantage of. So anyway, we then
- 22:49like a says, damn it, Lufy, I was hoping a Hancock was
- 22:55lying and Magellan were inside his head, and he's like, I don't get
- 23:00it. How has this kid recovered from my poison at all? And secondly,
- 23:06how is he like up and about even surviving? It is remarkable?
- 23:11But he's out here fighting the good fight and how is that even like?
- 23:15And he's really starting to get a little bit shook, which I really like
- 23:19because we know that Lufy got help. You know, this was this was
- 23:25not because he himself is so resilient, although that's certainly a factor, but
- 23:30it is because somebody else was able to do something for him. But all
- 23:36Magellan knows is this dude survived somehow, and that adds to Lufy's mystique.
- 23:44I like it. So then we go to Mister three and Buggy and you
- 23:52guys, this shit HADMI cracking up so bad. So we've got one of
- 24:00those like weird Sphinxy creatures that is doing the uh the noodles thing, you
- 24:08know, and he's yelling pennae and wheat flower with noodle or wheat flower noodle
- 24:14with curry or whatever and chasing them. Eventually, these guys wind up penned
- 24:22up underneath something I can't remember if it's like a a table with like a
- 24:26tablecloth over it. It's the sort of thing where they are not actually physically
- 24:30protected. But I think that maybe the sphinxes just don't know they're under there.
- 24:34I'm trying to remember. I you guys, I was. I was
- 24:41watching this and like the whole scene and the way that it unfolds. I
- 24:47don't know why, but I feel like this might have been one of the
- 24:49funnier things that's ever happened in the show. And I'm gonna wait until I
- 24:52get there. So that I can go line by line, but it progressively
- 24:56got funnier and funnier, and it's the sort of thing that I wonder,
- 25:03very sincerely wonder how it works with the sub instead of the dub, because
- 25:08the dub is so hysterical, and you guys know that, Like, I
- 25:15really have strong feelings at this point about how much better the dub conveys certain
- 25:22jokes, whether the joke is the same joke or not, it seems like
- 25:26they manage to do something with it with the dub that gets the point across
- 25:32and still manages to convey the humor even though the subject matter of the joke
- 25:37maybe different. And I was just listening to the Overdue podcast those of you
- 25:42who don't know it. It's a podcast about the books you've been meaning to
- 25:47read. And I guessed on it like once a year. Just recently did
- 25:52one with them to cover the book Cackle by Rachel Harrison and the boys from
- 25:56Overdue Long Read project every few months, And what they're doing right now is
- 26:06they're covering the Iliad. And for those who aren't aware, you know,
- 26:12people call it Homer's Iliad, and it's actually theorized that like there was no
- 26:18Homer, like, this is just a name that they gave in in order
- 26:25to assign a single writer to a work that actually is a compilation of a
- 26:33lot of different storytellers and a lot of different time periods. So the issue
- 26:38that can come up with the translation of it is that the original Greek is
- 26:48not consistent in its time period and the slang that was used, so you
- 26:53run into this like kind of weird effect where you're attempting to translate it ver
- 26:59beta. But if you do that, the tone of it is really uneven
- 27:03and all over the place, because it shouldn't. That's not really the way
- 27:07that it was intended to be consumed. And the whole thing with uh,
- 27:18the what I found interesting with the Overdue boys covering it. I can't remember
- 27:23the name of the translator, but they have chosen in particular a woman that
- 27:27they have read another translation of hers that they really really liked. And this
- 27:34woman has done a really interesting thing with the translation, attempting to use like
- 27:42language that feels modern enough that it is fresh and immediate, but isn't like
- 27:48so pop culture and irreverent that it feels totally anachronistic. And she attempted at
- 27:56first to use the same exact number of lines when she was translating, and
- 28:03then realized that didn't work, and there were a lot of things that she
- 28:06needed to be able to add a little context within the text itself and not
- 28:11in the footnotes for the line itself to work, And so it wound up
- 28:18being longer in the end because she added things, and how she wrestled with
- 28:25that. You know, she was working on this translation for like a year
- 28:27and making very little progress and getting super frustrated until she finally realized, I'm
- 28:33trying too hard to do a like quote faithful translation. That is, I
- 28:41will translate each word into each thing when there's not always an equivalent word in
- 28:48the English language, or the joke they're telling makes no goddamn sense in our
- 28:52current context. Things like that, And her whole forward is about the context
- 29:00of everything really influencing how you should translate things, because the way it was
- 29:07intended to be consumed is with an eye toward the relevance to like certain current
- 29:15events or trends or fashions or whatever. And you can make that relevant,
- 29:22but you can't make it relevant to today and keep the language identical in translation.
- 29:30So anyway, all this to say, I really it's that series that
- 29:36the Overdue Boys are doing is called Stop Homer Time, and they post it
- 29:41on their main feed, but you get it earlier if you're a patron.
- 29:44And it really was like sort of reassuring to me, because you guys know
- 29:48that I had a lot of like weird feelings about transitioning over to the dub
- 29:55at first, and feeling like there's so much I don't want to say hate
- 30:00because that's not exactly right, but I feel like there's a real puritanical quality
- 30:07to the way some folks watch anime where it's like, if you do the
- 30:12dub, then it's not accurate. And seeing the way that this translator treated
- 30:18a work that's like Seminal the Iliad and feels that if anything, the way
- 30:26she's translating it is more accurate was sort of validating to the way that I
- 30:30feel about the DUB. I understand the thought behind, like, well,
- 30:37this is what it originally said, and I want to read it the way
- 30:40it was originally said, or watch it the way, but you're not inherently
- 30:45a translation isn't the way it was originally said, and not everything works in
- 30:52a word to word translation. So I really like the moments in this show
- 30:59where there are certain jokes that are just genuinely really really funny. I haven't
- 31:06been watching it the way I used to, which was I would have the
- 31:08sub that was in Japanese playing at the same time that I had the dub.
- 31:15I haven't been doing that anymore because I decided it was like too distracting.
- 31:18But I kind of want to go back and watch some of these scenes
- 31:22because I feel that this arc has more genuinely laugh out loud moments than any
- 31:29of the arcs so far, and I'm just really curious how much of that
- 31:34comes from the original text and how much of it comes from them really knowing
- 31:41how to translate it and make it work super well, you know. So
- 31:47anyway, we then have this, uh, what's the name of the guy
- 31:49with the split orange and white? He is a scissor man and he is
- 31:56cutting up the floor like it's paper and then can curl it like you know.
- 32:02He just sliced a ribbon out of it and just lift it upwards.
- 32:07And it's so weird because he does a bunch of these ribbons and I'm watching
- 32:12this like I do not understand what the goal is here, but it's to
- 32:16wrap up around the pipe that is pouring all of this poison gas into the
- 32:24room, and it closes it off so the gas isn't coming in. But
- 32:30all I could think was like, how are you able to like be right
- 32:35up next to it as you're doing all of this and it does not affect
- 32:37you. I guess it's supposed to be that we have to reach a certain
- 32:40like concentration of it, but yeah, I just really this scissor man is
- 32:47a pretty fun bit. He can manipulate whatever he cuts as though it's made
- 32:52of paper. And I love Lufy just getting up and saying, really that's
- 32:57cool and fall asleep. And I was sort of like, I think that
- 33:02it's just supposed to be that he's still recovering, but I was puzzled by
- 33:07the fact that Lufy keeps on falling asleep, So we gotta keep going up.
- 33:14Crab guy, thanks for blocking out the gas. But now I can't
- 33:16go up the stairs to ace, and they have to figure out another way
- 33:22that they're going to do this. So Iva takes down. There's a transponder
- 33:32snail that she's able to I see, I'm doing the she and he I
- 33:37don't think they would care, but I'm gonna try and do they as much
- 33:40as I can. It's it's one of those things that I really judge myself
- 33:46for because they as pronouns is a valid like you know, it's a totally
- 33:54valid choice, and it's in keeping with the way we speak already as much
- 34:00to some people try to protest, but I find they so much harder to
- 34:06remember than just transitioning to a different gender entirely like they is. We're using
- 34:15it now in a way that I'm not as used to, and so I
- 34:19feel like awkward with it, and I often fuck it up. So forgive
- 34:23me, everybody listening if I fuck it up. I'm really really trying.
- 34:28But I know, I just want to forewarn you that I know this is
- 34:32a pronoun that I trip up on a lot, and it's just because of
- 34:37ingrained habit, you know. So I love this. When I was just
- 34:44like, we have quite the milunge of obstacles in our way, and there's
- 34:50just a scan across of all of these different people that they are going to
- 34:53have to deal with. And this is when Lufy pulls out the Viver card
- 34:58and realizes, like, oh okay, well, they must have Ace outside
- 35:01of the facility now, and yeah, we see him on the surface and
- 35:05he is being led to a ship. He's like on a dock here.
- 35:10I love like all the guards behind him, these goofy, fucking like cowls
- 35:14that they have to wear. They look so silly. And Ace is sort
- 35:21of like there's a real sense of I want to do something to draw things
- 35:28out and make some opportunities for my brother, but he doesn't seem to know
- 35:34what to do. He's looking up at the sky. There's a bird up
- 35:37there. We have just a sort of long drawn out you know. And
- 35:42Ace comes forward and guys, I don't know if I noticed this before,
- 35:45if this is a new thing or what. But Ace's tattoo there's an S
- 35:52that's crossed out, and I don't know if that's something that's been referenced.
- 35:54And I just forgot but I do not remember at all what that's about.
- 36:01Sorry, guys, I'm just over in the chat over here, David is
- 36:07saying singular they is attested to all the way back to William and their Werewolf
- 36:13written before th sound was thh and was the Thorn? And Jane Austen used
- 36:21it and Shakespeare. It's totally fine, and was the thorn. I don't
- 36:28know what you mean. I'm so sorry, David. I feel like a
- 36:30real Dodo, but I feel like I'm misunderstanding. But yeah, it is
- 36:36like anybody who knows anything about language, they would are not going to argue
- 36:39with the singular. They like, it's a completely valid thing. It's just
- 36:44I am not used to using it purposely referring to a specific person. Usually
- 36:52I'm usually referencing like a Oftentimes I'll use a singular day in reference to someone
- 37:00did something and I'm not sure who it was, so I just use they,
- 37:04And it's really really tricky for me to switch it up in my brain
- 37:08and be like, no, this is in reference to somebody who you know.
- 37:15Thorn is a character that used to be in the alphabet and made the
- 37:17th sound Oh right. I know about this because the ye Old Candy Company
- 37:24signs that why is a like sort of evolution of the thorn like character in
- 37:35the alphabet. So it used to be the old candy shop. That's actually
- 37:39what they were saying, but we have weirdly like corrupted it and made it
- 37:45into yie old, which is never what it was meant to sound like or
- 37:49and it doesn't actually make any sense. Thank you. Yes, now I
- 37:52remember because I recently like watched or read something about that. So we get
- 38:01the the handover of Ace, and as he's walking past, he turns and
- 38:10looks at the prison again and is thinking about Loofy and just sort of like,
- 38:15is there a way to avoid getting on this ship? And it's I
- 38:22really felt for him because knowing all of this and only having BoA's word for
- 38:29it, at first, you could tell yourself like, all right, maybe
- 38:34she doesn't have the great information where she's fucking with me. I don't see
- 38:37why that would be true, but I can, like, you know,
- 38:40try and comfort myself. But now he's got actual confirmation that Loufy is in
- 38:45there. So we go inside and Loufy when he's talking up to Iva,
- 38:55Iva keeps saying to give up on a that I will get you out of
- 39:02this prison. I can break you out of here, no problem, but
- 39:07I'm not going to be able to help you with Ace. Put your faith
- 39:10in white Beard and believe that he would do something to help one of his
- 39:16own. He would never give up. You might not be able to make
- 39:20a move, but he can and this is when Lufy says, I'm going
- 39:25to Marine Ford and I have a tries to argue with Loofy, And it's
- 39:30really funny because we have a moment that's like almost exactly mirrored in the recent
- 39:38episode of the live action one piece. In live action, Garp is holding
- 39:44Lufy up and Lufy's laughing, and Garp is reminded of gold Roger, and
- 39:52it's the same position, like he's holding him up, and the energy of
- 40:00it is like it's just a transition of like what you're doing is me is
- 40:07reminding me exactly of the face somebody was making and the energy they gave when
- 40:12they did it. So what happens here with Iva is they're trying to convince
- 40:17Loofy to like give up, and Lufy says, I Am not going to
- 40:23give up. If I if I gave up, I would regret it,
- 40:28and he says it with this intensity that Iva suddenly sees dragons standing there and
- 40:35backs up in a hurry and is just sort of like, well shit,
- 40:38this is unflinching, and he we get interrupted here by Crocodile saying, if
- 40:47you want out so bad, then let me free. I'll make a hole
- 40:51in the ceiling of this place and you'll be free to go. I was
- 40:55so excited about this, you guys, and Lufy has much more of a
- 41:02reaction to seeing crocodile than I was expecting. But I appreciated that. We
- 41:09get a flashback of Lufy like impaled on his hook and are reminded, like,
- 41:15there have been a lot of baddies that Lufy has gone up against that
- 41:21have done some damage to him, but that hook through the chest, that
- 41:25was a real particular kind of fucked up, and I am very willing to
- 41:32buy that the crocodile is somebody that he is more afraid of than others.
- 41:42But yeah, so he's standing there grinning with his creepy fucking face. I
- 41:46love him. He says, did you miss me? And that's how the
- 41:50episode ends, and I was like, honestly, yes, a little bit.
- 41:52I did. Though, So we jump into the next episode from here
- 42:00and the main thing that I want to talk about here so well, I
- 42:07do, but I'm not going to do it first. We have to recover
- 42:13everything, so I'm trying to get through that. Oh yeah, here it
- 42:17is so Crocodile and Moofy like they have to sort of there's an interesting implication
- 42:29here, and I do not know what is going on, but the energy
- 42:34of it is Crocodile has some kinky shit in his past or has some things
- 42:42that he is like just personally ashamed of. I don't know, and Iva
- 42:47knows about it and is essentially holding Crocodile to his good behavior by saying,
- 42:59if you fucking do anything to betray us, I am going to tell everybody
- 43:07about your dirty little secret. Yeah I can't. I am so curious about
- 43:13this. There there is an if those who don't know. PG. Woodhouse
- 43:21is a comedic writer and he does a series, or he did long ago
- 43:28a series that was the Jeeves and Wooster series, and Jeeves was a butler
- 43:34and Wooster was his sort of like a little air headed rich master and very
- 43:44well intentioned but hair brained with these schemes a lot of the time, and
- 43:51it is such a fun series. Like PG Woodhouse is truly a master.
- 43:57There's some problematic stuff, of course in certain ones. But there is a
- 44:00story where Jeeves finds out some dirt through a guy's butler who he talks to,
- 44:12and it's held over this man's head the whole book to keep him from
- 44:17doing shitty things because he's otherwise a fascist essentially a bad person, and has
- 44:24this like very upright super hyper masculine image and has to keep that in order
- 44:32to continue doing the work on the ground that he's doing. Like imagine a
- 44:37sort of like Ben Shapiro, but actually really really masculine and not the weird
- 44:45thing that Ben Shapiro has going on like a public figure in that way.
- 44:52And eventually at the end of the book you find out the thing that is,
- 45:00the thing that's being held over his head is that he has the most
- 45:07popular lingerie shop in London named you Lay, and it's like his life and
- 45:16he is rolling in it. But it's from that, not from what he
- 45:22does, which is what he lets everybody think. Like, it's not about
- 45:25his like you know, his fascism. It's about how much he loves to
- 45:31design and sell lingerie. And it's one of those secrets that feels so silly,
- 45:37but it works perfectly tonally with the goofiness of the book series themselves,
- 45:44and it's just shy of being like offensive. You know. I really love
- 45:50that little twist and I want to believe that's the twist here, is that
- 45:54Crocodile has a very successful company and that he is just super into designing lingerie
- 46:05and that is his dirty little secret that he doesn't want anybody to know and
- 46:07guards very jealously, even though it's super not really that big a deal.
- 46:14I can see why he would think so, and that's gonna be what I
- 46:16go with for his like, you know, and the fact that Iva is
- 46:22out here, like, look, lufy, I get it. If he's
- 46:27offering his help, though, we gotta take it. It's we just don't
- 46:31have the options here to be picky. And he calls Crocodile Sandy Pants,
- 46:38and then for like the rest of this episode, calls him Kroco boy.
- 46:45And I met him when he was a rookie, still wet behind the ears.
- 46:50I wouldn't worry. If this guy tries to double cross us, I'll
- 46:55whip him into shape in a jiffy. As long as I've got an eye
- 46:59on him, then he should behave just fine. He's a scoundrel, but
- 47:05he's a scoundrel with a weakness. I know. Well, what I really
- 47:12think is that maybe Crocodile started out as a woman and maybe I've a transformed
- 47:22him. But I really am not sure whether Iva's power works in the other
- 47:30gender direction, because so far we have only seen Iva turning men into women,
- 47:36and to a degree that really is kind of like an unfortunate thing where
- 47:42it almost seems, oh, well, we're going to choose the most humiliating
- 47:45thing, which is, of course a man being turned into a woman.
- 47:49But I am willing to sort of let that go and not look at it
- 47:53that way because of the fact that the most recent guard was not humiliated and
- 47:58was pleased to have been transformed. But I just don't know whether or not
- 48:04it was it's within I was power to turn somebody from woman to man,
- 48:10Like, can that be done? Ooh, sorry, I'm missing a bunch
- 48:16of stuff here, David says, uh, what's the secret? Speculate wildly,
- 48:22And it's also so on point. I think in reference to the Jeeves
- 48:25and Wooster thing, does Nami buy from Crocodile's company? Oh, you mean
- 48:31like laningerie? No? I don't know. Now. I likes pretty things,
- 48:37so maybe she would. She doesn't seem like a lingerie girl to me,
- 48:42but she actually has been known to like shopping, So I think it's
- 48:45just that we haven't gotten to see that side of her because they don't have
- 48:47leisure time in this show, you know what I mean. But yeah,
- 48:52so what I was saying does seem to be like working. And then we
- 48:57get the chiming in of Jim Bay and him saying, I'm going, I
- 49:05will definitely put my life on the line for Ace. Let me get in
- 49:07on this as well. So they've got like a pretty solid crew going on,
- 49:13and then a bunch of other dudes that are like off to the side.
- 49:16They can hear all of these deals where oh yeah, as long as
- 49:21you like pledge that you care about Ace and you'll put your life on the
- 49:22line, you're gonna get a way out of here. And they're all like,
- 49:25oh yeah, yeah, yeah, me too, I would die for
- 49:29him or whatever. And I just really like the way that was written or
- 49:32whatever. It's just the implication just being they have no interest in what they're
- 49:37talking about. There's no sincerity to it. And then we get the part
- 49:45that I was the most excited about. Oh wait, I'm skipping over something,
- 49:51my bad. All of these fucking guys coming in with their gas masks.
- 49:59We've reached Level six move in and they have to bust through that wall
- 50:04that the orange and white one put up and when they come in, they're
- 50:09like, well, they must still be down here, but there's a spiral
- 50:14that has been cut out of the ceiling. The coolest concept. I really
- 50:20really liked this as like an option. We don't see the way that this
- 50:23is done because like, if you stop and ask too many questions, it
- 50:28doesn't make a lot of sense that this was even possible. But in terms
- 50:32of like the visual of it, I love it. And so we've got
- 50:39one guard remaining who after everybody else? Oh no, I lie, it
- 50:45looked like it was a guard remaining, but no, all of them are
- 50:47still there and they're like, well, where is everybody? And they hear
- 50:51a voice and it's the original jail manager, sare you? Which it's funny
- 50:59because we've got Hand and we've got Magellan, which are both names of like
- 51:02you know, figures in history. Not really sure why Magellan was chosen.
- 51:07Hannibal is of course for me, I'm thinking of Hannibal Lecter and you're in
- 51:13like a hell escape. Choosing a serial killer works, you know. I
- 51:16don't get the choice for Magellan though, like he was an explorer, and
- 51:20I'm not sure if there's a different Magell, and they're referencing that I just
- 51:22don't know about, but sure you doesn't ring any bells. I don't know
- 51:25if this is a name that's from something else or not. And he basically
- 51:30is like, all of you guys are pathetic. This whole place is a
- 51:32shambles, and three people have managed to not only escape themselves, but they
- 51:39got Jimbay and Crocodile the fuck out of here. So if you are interested
- 51:45in like salvaging this situation, go fucking tell them to let me out of
- 51:54here. Tell Magellan, I am going to assist if he wants. And
- 52:01Magellan, who is apparently like watching through a transponder Snail, finds out that
- 52:08these other two have been released, and he's just like, god fucking damn
- 52:14it. Do you think i'd be held responsible? And this other guy's like,
- 52:17yeah, I do. I think you will be held solely responsible,
- 52:22sir. So now he's in panic mode, and I think that he is
- 52:28going to wind up taking this advice, and of course he winds up calling
- 52:32out to uh my god, what is her name, Sadie and telling her
- 52:40to get involved. We cut over to Crocodile, who has somehow like gotten
- 52:47out of his prison uniform and back into his actual clothing. He's wearing rings,
- 52:53he's got that fur line, like that fur collar coat, he's got
- 52:59a cigar, like the whole bit. I don't know. They're sitting on
- 53:06some packing crates, so my assumption is that like they get stripped of their
- 53:12stuff and put into their regular like put into their uniforms, and all of
- 53:15their stuff gets put in crates that are just stored very close by. But
- 53:20it is really funny to me, And honestly, I was kind of feeling
- 53:24crocodile in the prison outfit, so I was a little bit disappointed that he
- 53:29is like changed out of that so fast. So we get Then I have
- 53:35a talking to to Bonclay and I was saying, emporio energy hormones only give
- 53:45you strength for one day. There will be side effects. Are you sure
- 53:51that you want to do this? And Bonclay says, go ahead and do
- 53:54it. What choice do I have If I don't, I won't even be
- 53:58able to get up off the floor. And I just love this. Yes,
- 54:02good point, unless I wanted to carry you, which for the record,
- 54:07I do not, And I just really enjoyed that delivery that line delivery.
- 54:14So Iva administers this hormone I felt so bad. Iva gets him in
- 54:19the in the nutsack is the implication, and I'm just like, why why
- 54:22must you? Poor Loofy, who is just like please don't die, bon't
- 54:27clay. And then we jump to them all in the snow and they have
- 54:34got to like hurry through and get out of there, and you know they're
- 54:38not super well dressed for it, like there's good as it's going to get
- 54:42with these coats and stuff. But reminder that most of I have his compatriots
- 54:45are wearing fishnet high high stockings on the bottoms, like you know, this
- 54:51is not ideal. So let's see Iva. So let's give these boys,
- 55:00well new Kama Land is gonna give them a fight the likes of which I've
- 55:04never seen before. And are you ready to rock this? Straw? Boy
- 55:10and I have a turns and some guy is like, oh uh, he
- 55:14went out on ahead of us. I thought that Iva would be upset and
- 55:19be like god, damn it, Loofy, but instead I just says,
- 55:21a free spirit, let's catch up with him candies, and it's great.
- 55:25Iva takes off at a dead sprint. We see these wolves that are standing
- 55:29there and they seem like they're maybe going to attack, and they just stand
- 55:36and watch, and then Von Clay goes by, going, wait, help,
- 55:43I'm going too fast, and he's pure a wedding and goes right by
- 55:47the camera and like knocks the two wolves over and like goes off screen the
- 55:52other side. This was so funny, you guys. There's there's a a
- 55:57TikTok that was going around where somebody is trying to film on a slope,
- 56:06a ski slope I think that they had I don't remember if they were skiing
- 56:09or snowboarding, but they are standing still and somebody is filming them on their
- 56:15phone and as they're talking, you just see you hear something coming from one
- 56:21side. They fly by and you just hear them go earl, and then
- 56:28a second shape that goes, we're going too fast and they it's like a
- 56:32split second that they fly past the camera and with genuine like panic in their
- 56:37voices. And that's the whole TikTok is just this person trying to have a
- 56:42calm moment and these two people who were completely out of control. So anyway,
- 56:49this just reminded me of that a lot. And yeah, apparently despite
- 56:55the hormones being a bit too much. It's so sort of you know,
- 57:00Bond is getting some compliments on having some excellent moves. I do like too
- 57:06that He's like, I'm getting sick though, I'm spinning too fast. This
- 57:09is too much. So we cut back to Ace. He is on the
- 57:14deck of the ship and he is staying. I think he's sitting on like
- 57:17a slab that's made entirely of that seastone because it's just sort of a weird
- 57:24thing. The chair is made out of it, and the ground is made
- 57:30out of it, which it's a pretty good precaution to not only have the
- 57:35chair and chains made out of it, but to have like this sort of
- 57:37whole environment. If what I think this is is correct, I may be
- 57:42wrong about that, but yeah, he is on a ship that is like
- 57:47heading out, and we see the huge gates opening, and I was just
- 57:53like, he has gotten a lot further than I was expecting. And as
- 57:59he's going out, we go to Magellan, who's like, well, at
- 58:01least the Navy didn't come inside and see what a fucking disaster we are,
- 58:05So we got that going for us. As he heads back inside and everybody
- 58:10is running up the stairs here, and we get info that it's about ten
- 58:15am and that probably the execution, which is scheduled at three in the afternoon,
- 58:23Like maybe they'll be able to stop it in time. They've got some
- 58:28hours here. But I just want to mention here, you guys, that
- 58:34Lufy is running and Jim Bay is running. Crocodile is just sort of floating
- 58:38like on a constant stream of sand. I don't remember seeing this before,
- 58:45and it may be that we never saw him having to run for a sustained
- 58:50period of time, so it just wasn't something that would have come up.
- 58:53But it is really wild looking and I kind of love it. But yeah,
- 59:00movie is like we still may have a chance. And it says crocodile
- 59:06grunts, is this supposed to slow me down? And he puts his hand
- 59:10on this door, I'll turn it into sand, And we get a narrator.
- 59:15Let's go over how crocodile sand sand devil fru power works. He can
- 59:20turn into sand as well as control it. His right hand can suck out
- 59:24any type of moisture. People in plants will wither away, will rocks and
- 59:29earth will turn into sand. I really do appreciate these little recaps, like
- 59:34I didn't need it, but I appreciate it. So he is able to
- 59:37completely sandify that huge door and all of these guards are positioned on the other
- 59:44side of it, like, oh shit, because that is nothing. It
- 59:47takes him like two seconds. It's really really easy. And we find out
- 59:52this is level four. So these dudes begin to report in and Crocodile is
- 1:00:00doing his crocodile thing where they shoot him up and he is just standing there
- 1:00:06grinning, smoking cigar, and they actually nail him through the eye and we
- 1:00:10get a very like Terminator kind of shot through the hole in his head,
- 1:00:16and then we pull out and face him front and he just grins at them
- 1:00:21while his head closes itself back up again. It just really was giving,
- 1:00:24like you know, Terminator two. So I love that when they do this.
- 1:00:30I'm thinking to myself, they have to know that this doesn't work on
- 1:00:34him, right, Like don't they know what the capabilities of their prisoners are.
- 1:00:38But then one of the other guys says yells something like idiots use the
- 1:00:43prison bullets, which I don't know what that means because we're in a prison
- 1:00:46and those are their bullets. So I would have assumed those were the prison
- 1:00:50bullets, but apparently not. And Crocodile swipes his hand through these guards and
- 1:00:54we get a pretty gnarly like montage of each of them drying out and their
- 1:01:02skulls like it's really something. I love his power. It's so cinematic and
- 1:01:08it's just very very creepy. So Lufy catapults himself into the air and yells
- 1:01:15gum gun rain, and then you know, does the fist. It's basically
- 1:01:20like gatling, but with a wider reach. Then we've got Jimbay, who's
- 1:01:24like I think he says like fishman karate, and he pushes outward with a
- 1:01:32fist, and the guards are standing there like nothing happened. What's going on?
- 1:01:38Jimbey does not move a muscle, He just stands and waits, and
- 1:01:44then all of a sudden, you start to see the like pebbles on the
- 1:01:49ground starting to move away from him, and one of the guards begins like
- 1:01:55inching backward, and another has a weird like sort of indent in his stomach,
- 1:02:02as if he were pressed against a railing or something, but the railing
- 1:02:07is invisible. And then abruptly they all go fucking flying at the same time,
- 1:02:15and I have like only a very It just was such a weird moment
- 1:02:21how long it took that. I have to assume if they decided to run,
- 1:02:28it wouldn't have worked because his power sort of kept them in place.
- 1:02:31But I did sort of think, y'all are just standing there, going,
- 1:02:35well, nothing happened, Maybe you should try and attack. Then what do
- 1:02:37you say? But anyway, that's the moment where the camera pulls out and
- 1:02:45we see Jim Bay and Crocodile standing there with Loofy between them and like thirty
- 1:02:51guards that have been completely knocked out, and the guys who are in the
- 1:02:54observation room are like I Loofy plus two warlords. I just don't see it
- 1:03:02for us. I don't think this is gonna work. And I love when
- 1:03:07there's still some guards standing there. Lufy just says move, we're in a
- 1:03:13hurry, and we see the three of them sprint forward, and then we
- 1:03:19get that cool thing that the show does occasionally in really dramatic moments where the
- 1:03:23animation gets really detailed and there's a lot more detail and shading than we usually
- 1:03:30get, and I always like it, and it, you know, get
- 1:03:36a bit of a pause with it. As we hold on that shot before
- 1:03:38we go over to Hannibal and I love it. These guards are yelling like
- 1:03:44Hannibal, oh God help, and as he realizes how dire this situation is,
- 1:03:51he begins to run. Now we get the part that made me laugh,
- 1:03:57like really really laugh, you guys. So we're with a manticore who
- 1:04:03is just saying long John's tea, back, panteos, reefs, leggings,
- 1:04:14raw, bloomers, bloomers, reefs, briefs, briefs. Now, you
- 1:04:24guys, this isn't what made me laugh. This is how the scene starts.
- 1:04:28Is them. It's four of them just sort of sitting around and I
- 1:04:32guess it's a covering made of wax that they're hiding under. But buggies under
- 1:04:39here with mister three, and he says, this waiting around sucks. It's
- 1:04:46not funny anymore. Why are they hanging out here, stupid underwear fetishists And
- 1:04:53mister three says, just cleaning their butts must be nice, to which Buggy
- 1:05:00replies, this is what's gonna stop us from getting out of here, Like
- 1:05:03if the guards come, all of this was for nothing and these things won't
- 1:05:09stop farting. It's awful. You guys know that normally bathroom humor is not
- 1:05:16my jam. You understand how I felt about Like Magellan, there is something
- 1:05:20about how ridiculous the scenario already was that for him, adding and they won't
- 1:05:29stop farting completely sent it over the edge for me. And I had it
- 1:05:35playing and I was like standing at the counter in my bathroom because it was
- 1:05:40playing on my phone while it was brushing my teeth, and I had to
- 1:05:45stop and take my toothbrush out of my mouth and just lean on the counter
- 1:05:48because I started laughing so hard I was like spitting. I could. I
- 1:05:56could not handle it. The whole thing with Buddy and Miss three is pure
- 1:06:00gold. Everything with the two of them. I love it so much.
- 1:06:03It's so fucking hilarious. And then we go to like the outside like view
- 1:06:12of them hidden under here, and uh, we see the Manti Coors farting,
- 1:06:16and then all of a sudden there's like another sound, like a fart
- 1:06:21sound, and Buggy yel's that was you and mister three. I'm sorry,
- 1:06:29smells like Bardoc. Yeah, I know, what does that mean? It
- 1:06:39was? It was the I know, I fucking lost my mind you got
- 1:06:45this. This scene was so funny. I will never forget this one,
- 1:06:48Like this is gonna be the arc where they talk about farts for me,
- 1:06:54Like, ah, I live for this. This is so good. It's
- 1:07:00so good, you guys. So we then go to uh, Crocodile,
- 1:07:08and he tosses in the keys into this cell, and I love when his
- 1:07:14dude says, oh, thanks, buddy, and then looks up and recognizes
- 1:07:18crocodile, and I was sort of like, Crocodile, I feel like you
- 1:07:21could just melt that metal into sand. No, maybe he can't affect metal
- 1:07:27because the grating. Maybe it's that seastone stuff. I don't know. But
- 1:07:33he says, you're a man of action, aren't you, mister one,
- 1:07:40And the camera slowly lifts and we see mister One locked up back there in
- 1:07:45his shirtless glory with his blonde hair, looking real fucking intimidating. And I
- 1:07:53think I recall guys finding mister one really intimidating visually and fine, and then
- 1:08:00his like actual fighting style was sort of uninteresting. I don't fully remember,
- 1:08:06I'll be honest, So we'll have to wait and see about that. But
- 1:08:13all right, so I've got to wrap them way over time. But thank
- 1:08:15you guys so much for hanging out with me and listening, and thank you
- 1:08:19David for being here. Appreciate you Florien for commissioning this, and until next
- 1:08:24time to balloo motherfuckers. That was an Unspoiled Network podcast. Two
