- 0:16Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com. Why are you not including
- 0:23Speaker 1: Gilliam in the running back role?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Because he practices and meets with the tight ends.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Why do you think that is? Is he not going
- 0:28Speaker 1: to be a traditional fullback.
- 0:30Speaker 2: On the team? No, well, but the fullback always meets
- 0:33Speaker 2: and practices with the tight ends.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Oh, does he?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Okay. What do I know? Moving on to the wide receivers.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Wide receivers.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Best position group on the roster.
- 0:41Speaker 1: A lot to like. Definitively sane.
- 0:44Speaker 4: People are going to get sick of the Rams. Like,
- 0:46Speaker 4: have they not won enough?
- 0:47Speaker 1: They don't really have fans.
- 0:48Speaker 5: People are getting, what's in my YouTube channel again?
- 0:50Speaker 6: Because I'm getting ready to move.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Call live from the Toby house. Talk to my electrician
- 0:54Speaker 1: about putting in the whole house generator. So you might
- 0:57Speaker 1: want to take a look at that one. You know, football.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I mean, this has been going on for 30 years.
- 1:01Speaker 5: I know, and they don't believe in it.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's like, you know, I don't believe in oxygen. I
- 1:05Speaker 1: just don't believe in it. Stop.
- 1:06Speaker 5: It's not the same thing. This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Presented by Toyota.com. Patriots Unfiltered. All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:16Speaker 1: It is Thursday here at Gillette Stadium, and Alex is
- 1:21Speaker 1: joining us.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Hello, Alex.
- 1:23Speaker 7: Hey, guys.
- 1:24Speaker 6: It's Deuce.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It's Evan.
- 1:25Speaker 6: It's Paul.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It's me. And a little programming note right off the top.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I know our fans don't like curveballs, but we have
- 1:33Speaker 1: to throw a little one today because we're going to
- 1:35Speaker 1: do our picks today. even though it's the week before
- 1:38Speaker 1: the game with the Patriots leaving on Monday. I won't
- 1:41Speaker 1: be here. Evan won't be here. So the game on
- 1:45Speaker 1: a Wednesday really screws everything up. So we're going to
- 1:47Speaker 1: do our picks today for the opening season of the NFL,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and we'll do that obviously at the end of the
- 1:54Speaker 1: show after Vrabel and all that stuff. So very excited
- 2:00Speaker 1: about that. I have no idea who's playing other than
- 2:03Speaker 1: it's all NFL teams. I don't know who's playing who.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So I am really at a disadvantage. I haven't even
- 2:09Speaker 1: looked at the schedule.
- 2:10Speaker 5: I just love that you continue to print out your
- 2:12Speaker 5: own nonsense.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Which is always wrong anyway. So I don't know
- 2:16Speaker 1: why he goes.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Why change it up now, Fred? I've been doing terribly.
- 2:19Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah. So why try to improve? Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I try to get better.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 2: My dad is in a survivor pool thing, and he
- 2:28Speaker 2: always asks me for advice. So I'm like, I don't
- 2:30Speaker 2: know if that's really– his friends know that. But anyways,
- 2:34Speaker 2: so I have looked at the week one schedule, and
- 2:36Speaker 2: I say week ones are hard because they're very wonky.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Very hard.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And so I'm like, we've got to pick one that's
- 2:42Speaker 2: like a sure thing.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I would say the three toughest weeks are week one,
- 2:47Speaker 1: week two, because you don't know what you saw in
- 2:49Speaker 1: week one is real, and then the last week.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Of the season.
- 2:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 5: I would agree.
- 2:52Speaker 2: People not playing and stuff like that.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Good. Good insight.
- 2:55Speaker 5: But yeah, that's like from the guy who generally wins the.
- 2:58Speaker 6: That's right.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Did he win it again last year?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Are you still up? I was up there. I do.
- 3:02Speaker 4: We don't have to talk.
- 3:03Speaker 5: I was up there.
- 3:04Speaker 2: We don't have to leave.
- 3:05Speaker 9: He swept it.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Freddie.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Alex won the overall and Freddie won the spread.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Well, I.
- 3:12Speaker 5: And that's, you know, what the rubber is.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I go with the overall.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Alex took the overall by one game over Freddie.
- 3:19Speaker 1: There you go. We were neck and neck.
- 3:21Speaker 9: Paul made a little push at the end there, too.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I did.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I came in third.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 5: And I came in second in the spread.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You got better as the season went along.
- 3:28Speaker 9: I felt like you peaked as you were going.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Into the playoffs, you know, but just fell a little short.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That's okay, though. Yeah. Better start this year, maybe. Maybe
- 3:35Speaker 1: tougher summer for you. More work this summer.
- 3:38Speaker 4: More physical. If that was a little more physical for you,
- 3:40Speaker 4: I think you'll be better off.
- 3:41Speaker 5: I was impressed a little bit more often.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I think we need to talk about you, sir. Like,
- 3:45Speaker 2: how are we going to improve you in the picks?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Locking down the bottom.
- 3:48Speaker 5: You're in Scalavino territory.
- 3:50Speaker 1: That's not a great place to be.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I'm just embracing my suckitude.
- 3:53Speaker 1: That's my... What happens, though, when you do these picks?
- 3:57Speaker 6: Like, what.
- 3:58Speaker 1: What kind of mashed potatoes are going on in your brain?
- 3:59Speaker 5: Because he only knows the Patriots.
- 4:01Speaker 9: He only focuses on the defenses.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 4:03Speaker 10: You know, I try my best, but sometimes you just
- 4:05Speaker 10: have the gift or you don't have the gift, and
- 4:07Speaker 10: I don't have the gift, I guess.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Well, what is the criteria that you use to pick
- 4:11Speaker 1: a game?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Just the feel.
- 4:13Speaker 10: I mean, I am at the verge of going to
- 4:14Speaker 10: George Costanza, like, just doing the opposite of, like, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 10: I'm going to ask you whatever I pick.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Just write the opposite down. I go by feel, too.
- 4:22Speaker 1: But obviously, mine feels different than yours.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Well, do you remember?
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's better.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Do you remember my first year here was, like, the
- 4:28Speaker 4: epitome of beginner's luck. Like, I was on a heater.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And then, like, some guy wrote in and was like.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I was excellent at picking the NFC North. He was
- 4:36Speaker 1: like my pick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember that.
- 4:38Speaker 5: I do vaguely remember that.
- 4:40Speaker 4: I had a good first year, and then it was
- 4:41Speaker 4: all downhill.
- 4:42Speaker 5: I have a theory.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I think that you start talking about it when you
- 4:47Speaker 2: make your pick.
- 4:49Speaker 5: And you get wishy-washy.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You need to trust your initial instinct on it.
- 4:53Speaker 9: Trust your gut.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And then you're like, well, this could happen or that
- 4:56Speaker 2: could happen.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Evan's like my Obi-Wan over there.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm taking this team.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Trust your feelings. Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 5: You can stop being such in awe of those of
- 5:04Speaker 5: us that find a way to watch the other games
- 5:06Speaker 5: some every once in a while.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm going to watch some other games this year, Paul.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You watch them.
- 5:10Speaker 5: How do you watch that Red Zone thing?
- 5:12Speaker 1: I'm going to watch the highlights.
- 5:15Speaker 2: It's not easy for everybody. Like, Fred and I, you know,
- 5:17Speaker 2: when we're traveling and stuff, you don't see any of that.
- 5:20Speaker 5: That's a little different.
- 5:22Speaker 4: And yet you persisted.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 5: He's home in five minutes. It takes me an hour
- 5:26Speaker 5: to get home. And I saw the whole game. I
- 5:28Speaker 5: don't know how we missed it.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Well, you're driving. You're contemplating.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Are you watching games on the highway? I'm trying.
- 5:34Speaker 5: No, but I'm tracking them on the radio.
- 5:36Speaker 9: Accident on 495 North.
- 5:38Speaker 1: That's what Sirius is good for, the NFL. Driver watching
- 5:40Speaker 1: Red Zone.
- 5:41Speaker 5: I put that on on the way home.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's right.
- 5:43Speaker 5: For the four o'clock games.
- 5:43Speaker 9: If only you could have, not that you have Apple CarPlay, but.
- 5:46Speaker 2: That was mean.
- 5:47Speaker 9: Oh, jeez.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Whoa, whoa. If only you could have Apple CarPlay. In
- 5:52Speaker 5: full disclosure, I do have Apple CarPlay.
- 5:53Speaker 9: You do, but is it like.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I do not use it.
- 5:55Speaker 9: An auxiliary one?
- 5:56Speaker 1: How do you have Apple CarPlay?
- 5:58Speaker 6: I do.
- 5:58Speaker 5: You have to buy it separately? It might not be
- 6:00Speaker 5: Apple CarPlay like that, but I have... You can plug your.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Phone into that.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He's got a cassette tape with a wire cut out
- 6:06Speaker 1: of it.
- 6:06Speaker 3: When you had GPSs, you had a mount.
- 6:09Speaker 5: On the phone. I think of all of that. I
- 6:11Speaker 5: think of all the Bluetooth stuff. But it's not Apple CarPlay.
- 6:14Speaker 11: You're right.
- 6:14Speaker 5: I do not have that.
- 6:15Speaker 9: Well, it's a big screen, and the interface is like
- 6:17Speaker 9: a phone.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Whatever you're doing, you're operating that, then you've got your
- 6:21Speaker 1: 8-track over here. I don't know how you don't get
- 6:24Speaker 1: into an accident on the way home.
- 6:26Speaker 5: I do not watch... My phone on the way home.
- 6:29Speaker 5: I do see a lot of people doing stuff like that.
- 6:31Speaker 6: Oh, God.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It's the number one reason for accidents. It always scares me.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Speeding in phones. Those are the number two biggest reasons.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Some of those are just built different.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 1: All right.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'd be able to do it.
- 6:40Speaker 5: You just have to be able.
- 6:41Speaker 1: To handle it. So pics at the end of the show.
- 6:44Speaker 9: I do not condone that.
- 6:45Speaker 5: And we're going to have Mike Vrabel.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Very excited.
- 6:47Speaker 5: We'll hear from Mike Vrabel today during the show.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yep.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Around what? One o'clock?
- 6:51Speaker 1: One o'clock.
- 6:52Speaker 5: One o'clock.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So, what do we got?
- 6:54Speaker 5: So, get your questions in for Evan quick as he'll
- 6:56Speaker 5: be leaving to the media.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So, today is Thursday.
- 6:59Speaker 5: That media stuff.
- 7:02Speaker 1: We're not really into next week's schedule yet, but as
- 7:05Speaker 1: of Saturday, we would. Well, it's kind of a Monday.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It's a little Monday practice.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's a bonus day.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It's a bonus day.
- 7:10Speaker 2: They are treating it as a bonus day.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Today is Monday.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Tomorrow off.
- 7:14Speaker 5: He'll be off tomorrow.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Like a Tuesday. Travel Monday. Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Walk through Tuesday.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Yep.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Get after the Seahawks Wednesday.
- 7:22Speaker 1: So I'm going to be thoroughly confused all next week. Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: me too.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The Wednesday start is terrible.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But, I mean, it's cool. We're the team starting the season,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, against the world champs. Wednesday night, we've got
- 7:39Speaker 1: the whole league to ourselves. All eyes will be on
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Patriots. NBC, it's not one of those streaming things, Paul.
- 7:45Speaker 6: I agree.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You know, we're on a real network. And it's going
- 7:48Speaker 1: to be exciting. going to be really exciting. I know
- 7:51Speaker 1: a lot of their crew were in town and they
- 7:54Speaker 1: had like, you know, five camera interviews going on here. Reproduction.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Mike and I bumped into Devin McCourty on the way
- 8:01Speaker 5: out yesterday.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 10: We were, well, and I were a little confused yesterday.
- 8:04Speaker 10: Cause I saw it took one of them from a distance.
- 8:07Speaker 4: And I was like, I think Jason's here. What's Jason
- 8:09Speaker 4: doing here?
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then as we walked out, I was like, No,
- 8:12Speaker 1: that was Devin.
- 8:13Speaker 5: But it did take us a second.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And we all take pride in being able to tell
- 8:16Speaker 4: the twins apart.
- 8:16Speaker 9: My biggest flex is that I can tell them apart.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I think Devin has a softer look.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I said. Well, I said Jason's a
- 8:23Speaker 4: little more angular.
- 8:24Speaker 9: But Devin's more intense.
- 8:26Speaker 5: And I thought Devin was a little scruffy yesterday, which
- 8:28Speaker 5: is why I originally thought it might be Jason.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Right, because he's usually the bearded one.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So I think it's exciting that it's weird, but it's
- 8:37Speaker 1: exciting that we've got this Wednesday night game When's the
- 8:41Speaker 1: last time the league has had a Wednesday night game?
- 8:43Speaker 2: It's been a long time.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I don't even remember. I feel like there was COVID.
- 8:46Speaker 9: There was COVID. There was some random reason.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I think in COVID that was the only ever Wednesday game,
- 8:52Speaker 5: something like that. I think it was a Wednesday night game.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I thought that was Tuesday. Maybe it was a Tuesday.
- 8:57Speaker 9: Maybe it was Tuesday.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Maybe that's what I'm thinking.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Was that the Patriots-Kansas City? There was one where they
- 9:00Speaker 4: had a game.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and then there was another one.
- 9:01Speaker 1: That ended up moving to Monday night.
- 9:02Speaker 5: I think it was a Pittsburgh game.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I was stranded in Kansas City for that one.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Every once in a while, I feel like there's been
- 9:09Speaker 2: conflicts with states of the union and things like that
- 9:12Speaker 2: where they have moved games around to accommodate that.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Oh, I don't think they ever did that.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I think they did one year. For the State of
- 9:19Speaker 2: the Union? There was something political going on.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I know 9-11, they moved things around.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I was looking this up the other day, games that
- 9:28Speaker 2: had been played on different days of the week, and
- 9:30Speaker 2: there was some a while ago, not recent.
- 9:35Speaker 10: The Ravens and the Steelers, after a major COVID outbreak,
- 9:38Speaker 10: they were on the Thanksgiving night slot.
- 9:40Speaker 1: They pushed it.
- 9:41Speaker 4: They also say the Cowboys and Giants.
- 9:43Speaker 10: had a Wednesday season opener due to a conflict with
- 9:46Speaker 10: the president's speech.
- 9:47Speaker 5: There you go.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I knew it was something.
- 9:49Speaker 1: There you go. I don't know why you would just
- 9:50Speaker 1: change for that. But anyway, all right. Um, what are
- 9:56Speaker 1: we talking about? We got captains were announced. Um, and
- 10:01Speaker 1: i think we had that on the show right.
- 10:03Speaker 9: I don't think we don't know it's tuesday afternoon all right.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Oh that's right so let's let's go over that quickly
- 10:09Speaker 1: um who are the 2026 captains as voted on by
- 10:13Speaker 1: the team.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Drake may okay hunter henry Morgan Moses, Roberts Blaine, Marcus Jones,
- 10:19Speaker 2: Kevin Bayard III.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So Bayard, Moses are new.
- 10:24Speaker 9: First time Pats captain.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And first year on the team for Bayard, he's already
- 10:29Speaker 2: a captain, which I think we all could see coming.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You saw that developing.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and Morgan Moses is definitely the leader of the
- 10:36Speaker 2: offensive line. you know, they all call him onker or
- 10:39Speaker 2: something like that. So, you know, it's, it's, that one's fitting.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I thought he would feel your pain. I thought he
- 10:44Speaker 2: might've been a captain last year, but it was his
- 10:47Speaker 2: first year on the team. And, you know, maybe some,
- 10:50Speaker 2: some of that going on, but yeah, it was a,
- 10:52Speaker 2: those six.
- 10:53Speaker 1: What was the year? Was it Mayo's year where like
- 10:55Speaker 1: every captain got.
- 10:56Speaker 9: Hurt and flew?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Uh, that was, yeah, not just hurt.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I think Joe Cardona was the last one left that
- 11:04Speaker 3: didn't have to be replaced.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yeah, but they only have six. The Rams have 11 captains.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Cardona's one of them. Like 25% of their team is
- 11:15Speaker 2: a captain. So I think that's excessive. The Patriots only
- 11:18Speaker 2: have six.
- 11:18Speaker 5: I think that's ridiculous.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I think it waters down what it means to be
- 11:23Speaker 1: a captain.
- 11:23Speaker 6: Agreed.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I saw the list and I was just like, this
- 11:26Speaker 2: is absurd. Like 11 captains? Six is the right number.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Does baseball have captains?
- 11:33Speaker 5: Some teams.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Jason Baratek was a captain.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Oh, that's right. Some teams have captains. Some teams probably don't.
- 11:40Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Bruins don't.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Bruins don't.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So in the NFL, is it required to have captains?
- 11:47Speaker 3: Well, they do make a lot about the coin flip
- 11:50Speaker 3: in the beginning of games.
- 11:53Speaker 5: I think someone has to be designated to talk to
- 11:56Speaker 5: the officials on field. And I think they have that
- 11:58Speaker 5: in hockey.
- 11:59Speaker 1: That's a hockey for sure.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Even though the Bruins don't technically have a captain, someone
- 12:03Speaker 5: has to be the guy that.
- 12:05Speaker 2: One of the guys that wears the.
- 12:06Speaker 3: But it can't be too rigid because Rabel would throw
- 12:09Speaker 3: in an honorary captain every game too.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So how do we feel about who was named captain?
- 12:15Speaker 4: Fine. It seems like the right guys.
- 12:18Speaker 5: As long as Drake May is one of them, I
- 12:19Speaker 5: don't care.
- 12:20Speaker 10: Yeah, I don't really think it signifies all that much.
- 12:23Speaker 10: I mean, I know there's some people who are talking
- 12:24Speaker 10: about Gonzalez.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I don't know. He's just.
- 12:27Speaker 4: quiet dude I don't know well I.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Think they're talking about Gonzalez because Vrabel specifically talked about
- 12:32Speaker 1: him I think it was at one of the breakfasts
- 12:36Speaker 1: at the owners meetings about how he's working with Gonzalez
- 12:39Speaker 1: and asked him you know do you want to be
- 12:41Speaker 1: a captain here's what you need to do in order
- 12:44Speaker 1: to get there so you know obviously with the contract
- 12:49Speaker 1: thing people are speculating oh now they you.
- 12:52Speaker 9: Know but Players vote on it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Well, that's it. If you don't believe that, then you're
- 12:58Speaker 1: saying that Vrabel wasn't.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Telling the truth. I just don't believe that's the final say.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Well, okay.
- 13:04Speaker 2: It's like an electoral college.
- 13:05Speaker 5: I think we have a thumb on the scale.
- 13:08Speaker 9: How many captains do you need from the secondary, though?
- 13:12Speaker 5: I think six is probably too many captains, to be honest,
- 13:14Speaker 5: let alone the 11 for the Rams.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Probably four tops.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I wonder if Gonzo would have made it had... a
- 13:21Speaker 3: guy like Kevin Byard not been inserted into the locker room.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You know, 11th year in the NFL, led the league
- 13:26Speaker 3: in interceptions. He's just like a Devin McCourty type of bro.
- 13:28Speaker 5: I wonder if Gonzalez would have been one if he
- 13:30Speaker 5: had signed a contract.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I don't think he would have been.
- 13:33Speaker 9: He's still out there every day at practice, though.
- 13:35Speaker 6: I do.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I think there's a difference between... your best players and captains. Like,
- 13:40Speaker 2: Milton Williams is in the captain.
- 13:42Speaker 1: A.J.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Brown's not a captain. Christian Gonzalez is in the captain.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Being one of the best players on the team doesn't mean.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Gronkowski was never a captain.
- 13:50Speaker 8: No.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Edelman was voted captain multiple times and turned it down.
- 13:55Speaker 1: He turned it down?
- 13:56Speaker 13: Really?
- 13:58Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 2: But they.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I would say there's a difference between those things. There is.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Being a true leader and just being a great player
- 14:08Speaker 2: I think are two different things. I don't know A.J.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Brown yet as well as we know Christian Gonzalez, but
- 14:15Speaker 2: I don't think A.J. Brown is a rah-rah kind of
- 14:19Speaker 2: guy either from what I've observed of him so I
- 14:23Speaker 2: think that those two guys are maybe a little bit
- 14:25Speaker 2: more reserved quiet personalities right for as good as they
- 14:28Speaker 2: are at football so I think that there's a difference
- 14:31Speaker 2: between those those two things I.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Think Milton Williams is the epitome of a captain to
- 14:36Speaker 5: be honest with you I any team that I ever
- 14:38Speaker 5: had I was ever on that had good leaders were
- 14:40Speaker 5: guys like Milton Williams that said the right things weren't
- 14:43Speaker 5: afraid to speak yeah speak to him, you know, and
- 14:46Speaker 5: did the, always did the right thing.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Milton Williams strikes me as that kind. I don't pretend
- 14:50Speaker 5: to know him like personally or anything, but when I
- 14:53Speaker 5: hear from Milton Williams, he strikes me.
- 14:55Speaker 1: As a captain type. I agree with that.
- 14:57Speaker 5: I agree about Gonzalez and, and AJ Brown, your points
- 15:01Speaker 5: about those, but Milton Williams to me is a little surprising.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I agree with that.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And he, and as of right now is one of the,
- 15:07Speaker 2: I don't know, is AJ Brown now the highest paid
- 15:09Speaker 2: player on the team? It's one, one and two, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 2: him and Milton Williams. So, I don't know. That one,
- 15:14Speaker 2: Millen Williams, I was a little bit surprised about. I
- 15:17Speaker 2: thought maybe your two of him being here, he would
- 15:20Speaker 2: have been one of the captains. Obviously, Spillane's a lock.
- 15:24Speaker 2: He's going to be a captain.
- 15:27Speaker 1: He leads them. Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 2: He's definitely a leader.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 15:32Speaker 5: All right. So that's captains.
- 15:35Speaker 1: What else we got?
- 15:36Speaker 9: I have Pepsi up his nose.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It came out of his eye.
- 15:39Speaker 6: I did it.
- 15:41Speaker 5: My eyes water. You get me every time.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I love those.
- 15:46Speaker 2: The Patriots have six captains. The Bruins have zero. Explain that.
- 15:50Speaker 5: The Rams have 11.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Marco Stern.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So what else do we got?
- 15:54Speaker 4: I just locked it on Seattle.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like we have less than a
- 15:57Speaker 1: week to go. I mean, it's so much goes into Seattle.
- 16:00Speaker 10: And then you realize it's the first game of the
- 16:02Speaker 10: season and you're going to dump everything into this.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And then it's going to be the week one game.
- 16:05Speaker 1: And you might not feel about the draft. You know,
- 16:07Speaker 1: you might not ever really think about this game again.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You know, it's like, remember you lost to Pittsburgh.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Like, so, so Superbowl results aside. What scares you about
- 16:16Speaker 1: Seattle right now? Everything.
- 16:18Speaker 2: But I have a question for you. Is this a
- 16:20Speaker 2: Super Bowl rematch?
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 16:23Speaker 2: So I'm allowed to call this a Super Bowl rematch?
- 16:26Speaker 2: You are. That was a big question I had for him.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Because I've been calling it a Super Bowl rematch.
- 16:30Speaker 5: You guys have no idea how important this is. This
- 16:34Speaker 5: is a precedent?
- 16:35Speaker 2: I've written Super Bowl rematch. I've been saying Super Bowl rematch.
- 16:38Speaker 1: It's a rematch. I mean, obviously, it doesn't have the
- 16:41Speaker 1: importance of a Super Bowl. It's week one of the season.
- 16:44Speaker 1: But it's a rematch between the two teams that played
- 16:46Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl for the most part.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah, for the first time in a while.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I mean, half of the Patriots are new.
- 16:52Speaker 1: No, I know. But the quarterback, the coach, there's a
- 16:55Speaker 1: lot of, you know, Milton Williams, there's a lot of
- 16:58Speaker 1: players that are still here on both teams, including the coach.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Gotta keep up with the Freddie rules.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Plus, they haven't even played a snap since they last
- 17:05Speaker 4: played each other.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I think that's the biggest thing that makes it a rematch.
- 17:09Speaker 1: The taste should still be in the mouths of the Patriots.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I know it's in the mouths of... of the Seahawks
- 17:14Speaker 1: because they're going to have their banner unveiling that night.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So how could it not be? So, yes, it's still fresh.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It's a rematch.
- 17:22Speaker 10: There's obviously plenty with the scheme. I would just start
- 17:24Speaker 10: with the environment. And, you know, going into... seattle's always
- 17:28Speaker 10: a tough place to play whether they're not going to
- 17:30Speaker 10: the playoffs i was there in 08 they weren't even
- 17:32Speaker 10: going to the playoffs it was.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Still it's an even brady lost there how loud it
- 17:35Speaker 1: yeah you're mad.
- 17:36Speaker 10: Bro so i just you know this is a young
- 17:38Speaker 10: team that has to be ready to go and play
- 17:40Speaker 10: in those conditions and you know do you hope that
- 17:42Speaker 10: seattle's a little over amped watching the banner go up
- 17:46Speaker 10: and you know getting i know bill always used to
- 17:48Speaker 10: hate right like having to put the patches on your
- 17:50Speaker 10: jerseys and you know still being connected to the past
- 17:53Speaker 10: so Paul's talked about it before that you can catch
- 17:55Speaker 10: these teams sometimes on and off night, and I just
- 17:58Speaker 10: think it's about a good start.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And the reason I ask what scares you most is
- 18:01Speaker 1: because I have my own answer, and it's their head coach.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think he might be, I mean, he's highly regarded
- 18:08Speaker 1: in the league, but I think he emerges probably one
- 18:12Speaker 1: of the top five head coaches in the league. in
- 18:14Speaker 1: my book.
- 18:14Speaker 2: If he can replicate it. Yeah, I would say that. Defensively,
- 18:19Speaker 2: he's one of the best.
- 18:20Speaker 1: In the league. I think he's smart as hell. I
- 18:22Speaker 1: would agree with you.
- 18:23Speaker 5: I think he's somewhat underrated.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I agree with you.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I think that I actually think this is probably the
- 18:30Speaker 2: best time to catch them if you're going to have
- 18:32Speaker 2: to play Seattle. They have a new offensive coordinator. Brian
- 18:36Speaker 2: Fleury is replacing Clint Kubiak. He's never called plays before.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yep.
- 18:41Speaker 2: They no longer have Kenneth Walker.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yep.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So they're breaking in a rookie running back who's talented,
- 18:46Speaker 2: but first-year running back will be his first NFL game.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Two changes that could be in the Patriots' favor, but
- 18:51Speaker 1: we'll see.
- 18:51Speaker 2: I mean, offensive play caller and the MVP of the
- 18:53Speaker 2: game are pretty substantial.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Getting further and further away from a rematch.
- 18:57Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 2: It changes. I mean, does Darian Price have the ability
- 19:03Speaker 2: to bounce runs out the backside of the formation and
- 19:07Speaker 2: take it for 35 yards like Kenneth Walker?
- 19:09Speaker 1: More of the question is, do the Patriots have the
- 19:12Speaker 1: ability to stop those wide runs?
- 19:15Speaker 2: I don't know if he sees it as well as
- 19:17Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker does though.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know, like let's say it was Kenneth Walker again.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I would be worried.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Okay. So I think that's how you have to look
- 19:25Speaker 1: at it.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I understand what you're saying.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I just think that, you know, price is a guy
- 19:29Speaker 2: that has a lot of explosiveness and he's got a
- 19:32Speaker 2: lot of upside and potential, but he's a late first
- 19:35Speaker 2: round pick making his debut in the NFL. Uh, Zach
- 19:39Speaker 2: Charbonnet is still not healthy for them, so he's not
- 19:41Speaker 2: going to play in this game. It's going to be
- 19:42Speaker 2: Price's backfield.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I know, but the way I look at what happened
- 19:46Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl is it was as much as
- 19:49Speaker 1: the Patriots. not being able to do it as Kenneth Walker.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Maybe. Maybe.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I mean, Kenneth Walker is really good.
- 19:57Speaker 1: He is. He is. But he didn't do that to
- 19:59Speaker 1: every team they played. Kind of did. Did he? Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 1: The wide runs? Yeah.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I mean, he was like top five in the league
- 20:06Speaker 2: in explosive runs.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 2: And he's a really good player. I think that they...
- 20:11Speaker 2: that newness though, offensively new coordinator, their whole offense is
- 20:16Speaker 2: kind of built off that wide zone running game and
- 20:19Speaker 2: getting the running game going. And then the boots and
- 20:21Speaker 2: the play actions and all that stuff. That's what really
- 20:24Speaker 2: gave the Patriots defense the most problems seven months ago. And,
- 20:27Speaker 2: Now you have a lot of newness there that we'll
- 20:31Speaker 2: see how that transition goes. If you're going to play
- 20:33Speaker 2: a team that has turnover on their coaching staff, playing
- 20:36Speaker 2: them in week one when they haven't played any starters
- 20:38Speaker 2: in the preseason is probably as good of a time
- 20:41Speaker 2: to play them as any. If they play them in
- 20:43Speaker 2: December or January at the end of the season, like
- 20:45Speaker 2: at that point, Seattle's probably rolling.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Or they're hurt and you get them in a good spot.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So you don't really know, but. Because neither team has
- 20:54Speaker 1: played a game since then, let's move over to the
- 20:56Speaker 1: other side of the ball. Evan schooled us that cover
- 21:02Speaker 1: six gave Drake a lot of problems, and they do
- 21:06Speaker 1: that really well in Seattle. Drake hasn't played a game
- 21:11Speaker 1: since then, so there's really no way to test what
- 21:14Speaker 1: he's learned in the offseason since then. this is be
- 21:19Speaker 1: his first chance to, for us to see mentally, how
- 21:22Speaker 1: has he improved?
- 21:23Speaker 10: I think you've seen evidence throughout the spring and summer
- 21:26Speaker 10: of the steps that they've taken to try to get
- 21:28Speaker 10: him ready and prepare him.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Yep.
- 21:30Speaker 10: A lot of things happen behind the scenes where they're,
- 21:32Speaker 10: you know, continuing to get him up to speed on
- 21:34Speaker 10: the offense and recognizing what the defense is doing. We
- 21:37Speaker 10: saw them, you know, in mini camp, go to the
- 21:39Speaker 10: line without a play call. We saw them during training camp,
- 21:41Speaker 10: go into the bubble and you can hear the music blasting.
- 21:44Speaker 4: You know, I just, I think there's a lot on
- 21:46Speaker 4: Drake in this game.
- 21:48Speaker 10: And I just don't want to expect too much out
- 21:50Speaker 10: of him because I do think, to your point, Fred,
- 21:53Speaker 10: there hasn't been a lot of time between that. But still,
- 21:55Speaker 10: there's been an offseason and there's been purpose in the
- 21:57Speaker 10: coaching staff of trying to get this kid to continue
- 22:00Speaker 10: to elevate his game.
- 22:01Speaker 4: And if he takes that next step. And he has
- 22:03Speaker 4: some patience.
- 22:04Speaker 10: That's the word I've kind of glommed on to with
- 22:06Speaker 10: him in that Super Bowl. It felt like he had
- 22:08Speaker 10: tunnel vision. And he would get the play call. You're
- 22:11Speaker 10: so used to Brady seeing, getting ready. You think he's
- 22:14Speaker 10: going to snap it.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Then, ho, ho, ho, he stops.
- 22:15Speaker 10: And then you recognize Devin Witherspoon's coming. There were too
- 22:18Speaker 10: many times on those blitzes where his cadence and his
- 22:22Speaker 10: pre-snap routine.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Is just feeding right into it.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Right at the snap, they're getting right off. He doesn't
- 22:27Speaker 4: see them coming. He doesn't know.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Is it fair to expect him to take that mental leap?
- 22:33Speaker 1: in week one?
- 22:34Speaker 10: I mean, a little bit, but I would say the
- 22:35Speaker 10: bigger thing to me is just being able to run
- 22:37Speaker 10: the ball and stay in favorable situations. And that's what
- 22:40Speaker 10: he said this summer. And it's a little bit of a,
- 22:41Speaker 10: you know, a rote answer going back to that. Of course,
- 22:44Speaker 10: everybody wants to be ahead of the chains. But everything
- 22:47Speaker 10: Seattle does well on both sides of the ball is
- 22:50Speaker 10: when they're in front. And they're able to do everything
- 22:52Speaker 10: on defense. They can stay in nickel. They can play
- 22:54Speaker 10: that way. Sam Darnold, there's no pressure on him to
- 22:57Speaker 10: have to make tough throws. And they never were able
- 22:59Speaker 10: to get into that kind of game with them in
- 23:03Speaker 10: the Super Bowl.
- 23:03Speaker 1: So can they.
- 23:05Speaker 10: put some pressure on the Seattle defense, on Mike McDonald,
- 23:08Speaker 10: to get out of nickel, to have to say, Jesus,
- 23:10Speaker 10: we can't stop Reggie Gilliam and Ramondre Stevenson right now.
- 23:13Speaker 10: We've got to go down and go into our base defense,
- 23:16Speaker 10: and now we're a little bit out of what we
- 23:17Speaker 10: like to do. Can you get Sam Darnold to make
- 23:20Speaker 10: a mistake? He played terrible in the Super Bowl, but
- 23:22Speaker 10: he didn't turn the ball over, and that, I think,
- 23:24Speaker 10: is where the line was. Marcus Jones was an inch
- 23:27Speaker 10: away early in that game of picking a pass off.
- 23:30Speaker 4: If you get that early turnover, does it change the game?
- 23:32Speaker 10: You can't allow Seattle to just go out there, get
- 23:35Speaker 10: a lead, start rolling, and do.
- 23:37Speaker 1: What they do best. I think it will be very
- 23:38Speaker 1: hard for the Patriots. On paper, the Patriots should have
- 23:42Speaker 1: more weapons than they did In February.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Sure. Yes. Sure.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I mean, the protection's got to be better. I mean,
- 23:48Speaker 4: they've got to be better coordinated up front to pick
- 23:49Speaker 4: up the blitzes.
- 23:51Speaker 10: But, you know, if you're just able to find some
- 23:53Speaker 10: success in the run game, and now Seattle's thinking about,
- 23:56Speaker 10: do we have to change what we're doing? You're not
- 23:58Speaker 10: in third and seven, third and eight. Every single third down,
- 24:01Speaker 10: you're in third and two or third and three. You know,
- 24:04Speaker 10: and just make a few more plays. Like, for as
- 24:07Speaker 10: bad as it was, it's not like they, you know,
- 24:09Speaker 10: it was.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Still a game.
- 24:10Speaker 4: You know, I mean, it was still a game, I
- 24:12Speaker 4: felt like, at least in the first half.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I mean, look at the scoreboard.
- 24:15Speaker 5: It was 19 to nothing in the fourth quarter. I mean,
- 24:18Speaker 5: it really wasn't a game.
- 24:19Speaker 10: But it was 19 to six, 19 to seven at
- 24:21Speaker 10: one point, you know.
- 24:22Speaker 1: The Patriots defense was doing a good job keeping them
- 24:25Speaker 1: to flight. Yeah.
- 24:27Speaker 10: I mean, I've seen teams get blown out before, and
- 24:29Speaker 10: I know in the second half it sure felt that way.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I know, but if you had said the Patriots won't
- 24:34Speaker 1: give up a touchdown in the first half in the
- 24:36Speaker 1: Super Bowl, you'd be like, okay. I like our chances.
- 24:40Speaker 2: It was a defensive blowout. It wasn't like they didn't
- 24:43Speaker 2: run away offensively and put.
- 24:45Speaker 6: Up 40 points.
- 24:45Speaker 1: You're watching it. You're like, we can't do it.
- 24:47Speaker 5: But it's still a three-score game going into the fourth quarter.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 24:52Speaker 5: It was what it was. I would say I really
- 24:54Speaker 5: like Mike's early down thing. I think that has to be,
- 24:57Speaker 5: they have to be better on early downs. We've heard
- 24:59Speaker 5: McDaniel say it a million times this summer. We've heard
- 25:01Speaker 5: Drake say it a million times. You can't get in
- 25:04Speaker 5: one of those games where you're dropping back 45 times
- 25:07Speaker 5: and you're just playing from behind. They have to be
- 25:09Speaker 5: better on early downs offensively. One thing I'm really going
- 25:11Speaker 5: to look for, we talked about this a lot early
- 25:14Speaker 5: in camp and not as much later in camp because
- 25:16Speaker 5: we didn't get to see the starters play in the preseason.
- 25:18Speaker 5: How fast will they play? Mike made this point about,
- 25:22Speaker 5: you know, sort of Drake getting stuck in plays, whatever. Well,
- 25:25Speaker 5: is that part of their sort of methodical way that
- 25:27Speaker 5: they played offense last year? I think if you had
- 25:30Speaker 5: the numbers that they were among the five slowest from,
- 25:34Speaker 5: you know, snap to snap, right?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Pace.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Pace.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Pace of play.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:39Speaker 5: I didn't have an A dot for you on that one,
- 25:41Speaker 5: but pace of play, good. So good numbers there. Can
- 25:45Speaker 5: they play faster and maybe don't give Seattle as much
- 25:49Speaker 5: time to adjust and prepare? I would be shocked if
- 25:53Speaker 5: McDonald just says, well, they couldn't handle all these blitzes
- 25:56Speaker 5: in the Super Bowl. We'll just run the same stuff.
- 25:58Speaker 5: I don't think he's going to do that. They're going
- 26:00Speaker 5: to have to be prepared for something different, and one
- 26:02Speaker 5: of the ways maybe you can prepare is to play
- 26:04Speaker 5: a little faster.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And let's face it. Let's be brutally honest about this.
- 26:09Speaker 2: They got their butts kicked.
- 26:09Speaker 1: The end of the season last year. In the playoffs,
- 26:13Speaker 1: the Patriots had trouble with their offense, and they were
- 26:15Speaker 1: playing the best defenses in the league. The difference in
- 26:20Speaker 1: the Super Bowl is that Seattle's offense didn't poop themselves
- 26:24Speaker 1: like some of the offenses that happened in the playoffs. C.J.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Stroud and Herbert and a blizzard in Denver. Still played bad,
- 26:34Speaker 1: but didn't poop themselves. So, you know, This time around,
- 26:40Speaker 1: the Patriots' offense is going to have to do better
- 26:43Speaker 1: against a good defense than they did in the playoffs.
- 26:46Speaker 10: Right, and they've made the moves to give you at
- 26:48Speaker 10: least some confidence on paper that they can do it.
- 26:51Speaker 5: I just have.
- 26:52Speaker 2: A tough time. I wrote my game preview like this.
- 26:57Speaker 2: you can't talk about any of this stuff without talking
- 26:59Speaker 2: about blocking. Like if they can't block Seattle's front, then
- 27:02Speaker 2: all the things like all the bells and whistles, AJ
- 27:05Speaker 2: Brown and Romeo Dobbs and all these additions that they
- 27:08Speaker 2: made to the skill positions aren't going to matter. And
- 27:11Speaker 2: I think, you know, we'd harped a lot and everybody
- 27:14Speaker 2: harped a lot on the blitzes that Seattle brain brought.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And that was a big problem, but their four man
- 27:19Speaker 2: rushes were getting home too. They were just rushing for
- 27:22Speaker 2: a lot of the game. They only blitz about 13%
- 27:24Speaker 2: of the time. Now they hit on all the blitzes.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Like the blitzes worked like dynamite, but the four man rushes,
- 27:30Speaker 2: they had a 44% pressure rate, just rushing four guys.
- 27:35Speaker 2: And so, like, that's too much. Anything over 40 is
- 27:38Speaker 2: considered danger zone. So, like, if you can't block their
- 27:42Speaker 2: four guys with five guys, we can talk about all
- 27:45Speaker 2: the additions that they've made, but he's going to be
- 27:47Speaker 2: running through his life just like he was seven months ago.
- 27:49Speaker 1: And I think that's absolutely true. If you lose that
- 27:54Speaker 1: battle in the trenches, it's going to be a long day.
- 27:56Speaker 10: That's why I'm really interested to see Jared Wilson, because
- 27:58Speaker 10: I think everybody focused on Will Campbell's struggles.
- 28:00Speaker 4: In the super bowl. And Jerry Wilson, I think had
- 28:02Speaker 4: a fair amount of struggles too. And you know, he's
- 28:05Speaker 4: messy moving to center.
- 28:06Speaker 10: Maybe that'll help him a little bit, but I still
- 28:08Speaker 10: think he's a little bit of a light guy. And
- 28:10Speaker 10: I want to see how he handles some of these
- 28:11Speaker 10: big interior defensive guys and, you know, maintaining that pocket integrity,
- 28:15Speaker 10: giving Drake a chance to step up. He's getting pushed back. Uh,
- 28:20Speaker 10: you know, that I just, I don't really know what
- 28:21Speaker 10: to expect from Jerry Wilson. Everyone's been telling me this
- 28:24Speaker 10: is his natural position. Um, I thought he was fine
- 28:27Speaker 10: in camp. There were some, you know, things.
- 28:28Speaker 1: That I liked. Do you think he'll get tested early with,
- 28:30Speaker 1: you know... Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah, they got dudes in there. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy.
- 28:35Speaker 2: You know, those guys are big physical players. Byron Murphy
- 28:40Speaker 2: is really hard to move. Like, really hard to move
- 28:43Speaker 2: off the ball. I just... I think that that's where
- 28:47Speaker 2: it's like simplistic, but it really is what it is.
- 28:50Speaker 2: You know, you, it's great. Let's run the ball. Let's
- 28:53Speaker 2: stay on schedule. Let's stay at a third and long. Well,
- 28:56Speaker 2: you can't stay on schedule if you can't block anybody.
- 28:59Speaker 8: Right.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Because then if you try to hand the ball off
- 29:01Speaker 2: on first and 10, now it's second and 12th. And
- 29:04Speaker 2: now you're playing from behind the sticks like that. That's
- 29:06Speaker 2: what happened in the Super Bowl is they did try
- 29:09Speaker 2: to run the ball in the first half a little
- 29:11Speaker 2: bit and they didn't have a ton of success doing it.
- 29:14Speaker 2: And now first and 10 becomes second and eight. Well,
- 29:18Speaker 2: that's not a great down for the offense.
- 29:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 29:20Speaker 2: So that's when Seattle really can start to get exotic.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I like what Paul is talking about with the pace.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I think that's one way that you can get Seattle
- 29:28Speaker 2: out of some of their blitzes is if you're going
- 29:31Speaker 2: so fast that they can't make those calls and they
- 29:33Speaker 2: just kind of have to play more vanilla based defense
- 29:36Speaker 2: and just kind of play their base concepts. When you
- 29:38Speaker 2: start to get into third and nine. and they got
- 29:40Speaker 2: the call from the sideline and they're huddling and everybody's
- 29:43Speaker 2: kind of waiting around for the snap. That's when you
- 29:45Speaker 2: can start to time up some of those blitzes.
- 29:47Speaker 1: So we talked about Mike McDonald and he's, he's a really,
- 29:50Speaker 1: really good defensive coach. You know, that they've made changes
- 29:55Speaker 1: to their offense and they, So you're probably assuming they're
- 29:59Speaker 1: going to be better. What adjustments do you think he makes?
- 30:02Speaker 1: Or does he say, no, we're going to do what
- 30:04Speaker 1: we do. And until they prove that they can beat that,
- 30:07Speaker 1: we're not going to make adjustments.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I think it's going to be pretty similar. Nobody's played
- 30:11Speaker 2: a game. Nobody's played in any preseason games on either side.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I would imagine that there isn't enough new... ideas like new,
- 30:22Speaker 2: you know, film, new, anything to really talk about or
- 30:25Speaker 2: break down that they can come up with like a
- 30:27Speaker 2: totally different game plan than what these two teams did
- 30:30Speaker 2: seven months ago. So we'll see. I mean, like offensively
- 30:33Speaker 2: for them is where I'm more interested because they have
- 30:36Speaker 2: a new coordinator. It's going to be the same system
- 30:38Speaker 2: that they were in last year. It's going to be
- 30:40Speaker 2: West coast and it's going to be Shanahan style, but
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know, every coordinator, every play caller has a different
- 30:47Speaker 2: twist on things.
- 30:47Speaker 1: So what if they're able to take away the run
- 30:50Speaker 1: and take away AJ Brown? What happens? Romeo Dobbs has
- 30:53Speaker 1: got to step up.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Very quick.
- 30:55Speaker 10: It's not going to be good. If he can't run
- 30:57Speaker 10: the ball, it's hard to see.
- 30:59Speaker 5: One-dimensional would be tough. I agree with Evan and Mike
- 31:03Speaker 5: on that. But you should be in better shape. Diggs
- 31:06Speaker 5: and Booty did not get open in that game often enough.
- 31:11Speaker 5: And you should hope that Brown and Dobbs can do better.
- 31:13Speaker 5: That's why you made those moves. You should be better equipped.
- 31:17Speaker 2: They're going to cloud the side of the field with Brown.
- 31:19Speaker 2: They're going to put a corner underneath him and a
- 31:21Speaker 2: safety over the top, and they're going to cloud that
- 31:24Speaker 2: side of the field with the safety clouding that area
- 31:27Speaker 2: of the field. I would imagine that that's going to
- 31:30Speaker 2: be the plan for them with A.J. Brown, so I
- 31:33Speaker 2: don't expect A.J. Brown to have a huge game because
- 31:36Speaker 2: I think that he's going to have basically two guys
- 31:38Speaker 2: on him most of the game. And so I do
- 31:42Speaker 2: think that it's going to have to be the one
- 31:44Speaker 2: guy that I would look at is pop. I think
- 31:46Speaker 2: pop is going to have some matchups in the slot.
- 31:48Speaker 2: They like to put their safeties in situations where they
- 31:51Speaker 2: have to cover out of the guys out of the slot.
- 31:54Speaker 2: It happened multiple times in the super bowl. They just
- 31:56Speaker 2: couldn't block it long enough for pop Douglas to, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 2: for Drake to get pop Douglas, the ball down the field,
- 32:02Speaker 2: but they had them three or four times on Kobe Brian,
- 32:05Speaker 2: who's now gone, but they're going to be replacing him.
- 32:08Speaker 2: With Okuda.
- 32:08Speaker 5: We forgot about that. They lost all their best secondary guys.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Remember Christian in L.A.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Told us that. So if I was Josh McDaniels in
- 32:16Speaker 1: my first series, I'd run A.J. Brown in some quick in-cuts.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Just mix it up. Mix it up. Because I agree,
- 32:26Speaker 1: they are going to have that help. But that's going
- 32:28Speaker 1: to come later. further down the field. If you can
- 32:31Speaker 1: get him on a quick in-cut, get him a couple
- 32:33Speaker 1: catches right away, give them something to think about, I
- 32:36Speaker 1: think that opens it up then for Dobbs and Hunter Henry.
- 32:39Speaker 10: I'm going to roll Gilliam out there and see how
- 32:44Speaker 10: they play 21 personnel.
- 32:47Speaker 4: And just smash mouth?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Yeah, just see how they play it.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Especially if they're playing it at a too high shell,
- 32:52Speaker 2: which they're going to.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Like, that.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's really what they are kind of, they play too
- 32:57Speaker 2: high shell. They have those great defensive linemen. They count
- 33:01Speaker 2: on those defensive linemen to stop the run a man
- 33:03Speaker 2: short in the box. So you can go heavy and
- 33:06Speaker 2: you can put Reggie Gilliam on the field and put
- 33:08Speaker 2: another tight end on the field, be under center and say, well,
- 33:12Speaker 2: if you're going to play with the light box and
- 33:14Speaker 2: too high.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Safeties, got to make them pay.
- 33:16Speaker 2: We're going to run it down your throat. Like, I
- 33:18Speaker 2: think that that that's, what the Patriots are thinking of
- 33:22Speaker 2: how to beat some of these cloud coverages. Cause everybody
- 33:25Speaker 2: is cloud in the deep part of the field to
- 33:27Speaker 2: take away Drake maze deep ball. Cause they know that
- 33:29Speaker 2: that is what he wants to do. So they're taking,
- 33:31Speaker 2: they're putting the safeties over the top of the defense
- 33:33Speaker 2: and putting a top on the defense. And so if
- 33:36Speaker 2: you're going to play that style of defense a lot, well,
- 33:39Speaker 2: now we have a fullback. Now you have multiple tight ends.
- 33:42Speaker 4: You wish you had Julian Hill.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you put these guys on the field and maybe
- 33:45Speaker 2: six offensive linemen, which is something I thought they should
- 33:48Speaker 2: have done more in the Super Bowl that they didn't do.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Those types of things maybe could work.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Are you telling Drake early on you have the freedom
- 33:56Speaker 1: to run if you feel you have to?
- 34:00Speaker 2: I mean, statistically, that was like one of the things
- 34:03Speaker 2: that they struggled with last year. Seattle's defense that I
- 34:06Speaker 2: remember talking about during Super Bowl week, like they did
- 34:09Speaker 2: struggle a little bit against scrambling quarterbacks. I don't think
- 34:12Speaker 2: it necessarily ended up mattering because of the score, but
- 34:17Speaker 2: they do. They play a lot of zone, but they're aggressive.
- 34:21Speaker 2: You know, they they're fast. They're aggressive. And I think
- 34:23Speaker 2: that's when. You hear, like, people talking about short passes
- 34:27Speaker 2: and get the ball out and run the football. That's
- 34:30Speaker 2: how they want.
- 34:31Speaker 1: The offense to play.
- 34:31Speaker 2: That's exactly what they want you to do. Yeah, because
- 34:33Speaker 2: they are swarming. So, like, those quick game passes and
- 34:37Speaker 2: those short passes, those are only, like, three or four
- 34:40Speaker 2: yard gains against the Seahawks.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Well, McDonald came from the Ravens, right?
- 34:43Speaker 14: Yes.
- 34:43Speaker 1: That's what they did best. You know, they were a fast,
- 34:47Speaker 1: sure tackling team.
- 34:49Speaker 2: They swarm. They swarm to the ball. So, you know,
- 34:52Speaker 2: those types of, like, they expect you to try to
- 34:55Speaker 2: run underneath stuff and attack the flats and things like that,
- 34:59Speaker 2: and they come quickly. So those are a lot of three-
- 35:02Speaker 2: and four-yard passes. You know, it doesn't really give.
- 35:05Speaker 1: You a lot. So if you're Zach Kerr, on the
- 35:07Speaker 1: other side, do you keep it conservative at first to
- 35:10Speaker 1: just let the game declare, or do you take some
- 35:12Speaker 1: chances early, get aggressive early?
- 35:16Speaker 10: I mean, I would probably play conservative early. I would
- 35:19Speaker 10: see that they're going to probably test Elijah Ponder on
- 35:21Speaker 10: the edge. That would be one of the areas I
- 35:23Speaker 10: would target, see how well he wants to stop the run.
- 35:26Speaker 10: You know, I'd test the middle with how this new
- 35:28Speaker 10: nose tackle situation is for the Patriots. So I just
- 35:31Speaker 10: think if you're getting aggressive early, it's probably a bad sign.
- 35:34Speaker 10: You want to at least maybe figure out that you
- 35:36Speaker 10: can't pressure with four first before you start. I'm sure
- 35:39Speaker 10: that they're going to be aggressive, even if suddenly they
- 35:40Speaker 10: develop a four-man pass rush.
- 35:42Speaker 12: But.
- 35:43Speaker 10: I think it's about trying to stop the run and
- 35:46Speaker 10: put the pressure on Darnold so I wouldn't get too
- 35:48Speaker 10: crazy and get gashed.
- 35:50Speaker 5: I mean, this is weird because of what happened in
- 35:53Speaker 5: the Super Bowl and how much respect I have for
- 35:55Speaker 5: the Seahawks' defense. I'm more confident that the Patriots' offense
- 36:00Speaker 5: will be much better. I'm less confident that the Patriots' defense,
- 36:03Speaker 5: because I think Seattle stopped themselves in the Super Bowl.
- 36:06Speaker 5: And if Darnold plays that way again, everything will be great,
- 36:09Speaker 5: and I think the Patriots have a great chance to
- 36:12Speaker 5: go in there and pull off an upset. But I
- 36:14Speaker 5: don't expect that. I expect other teams to play to
- 36:17Speaker 5: their capabilities. You always assume that. And I worry about
- 36:21Speaker 5: a lot of the things that Mike just said. I
- 36:24Speaker 5: thought they got a lot of pressure on Darnold in
- 36:26Speaker 5: the Super Bowl. I thought Darnold did a good job
- 36:27Speaker 5: of sort of avoiding it. Where did they get that
- 36:29Speaker 5: pressure from with this group?
- 36:32Speaker 1: You've got to dial it up. It's a scheme.
- 36:34Speaker 5: And then if you do that, does Darnold miss those
- 36:37Speaker 5: throws that he missed? Let's face it, he missed some throws.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Or do you get burned?
- 36:42Speaker 5: Does Gonzalez make these two or three eye-popping athletic plays?
- 36:47Speaker 5: Maybe he doesn't make them. So I worry more about
- 36:50Speaker 5: the Patriots' defense in this game than I do. I
- 36:53Speaker 5: think the offense is going to be really good. Maybe
- 36:55Speaker 5: it won't come out of the gates with 35 points
- 36:58Speaker 5: in the first game, but I have a lot of
- 37:00Speaker 5: faith in the changes they made on offense and, more importantly...
- 37:05Speaker 5: Drake being one more year experienced in this system.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Dustin in Chicago writes in, podcast at Patriots.com, it's crazy
- 37:11Speaker 1: to me everyone is so worried about Seattle. Personally, I
- 37:15Speaker 1: think we went 31-17. They lost Kenneth Walker. They lost Bryant.
- 37:19Speaker 1: I don't care what you say. Sam Darnold is a
- 37:21Speaker 1: mid-QB who got carried by a defense. I'm not worried
- 37:24Speaker 1: at all. Also, Fred, your taste in hot dogs sucks.
- 37:28Speaker 1: It's Chicago style and Chicago style only. Save the kraut
- 37:31Speaker 1: and brown mustard for Polo sausages and brats. Paul, you're
- 37:34Speaker 1: the best. Alice, good to see you back on an episode. And, Evan,
- 37:38Speaker 1: thank you for keeping me sane. Fred, eat a real
- 37:40Speaker 1: hot dog.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Putting a lot of stock in Kobe Bryant being a
- 37:44Speaker 2: big miss for them.
- 37:45Speaker 5: I'm surprised he thinks the game's going to be that close.
- 37:47Speaker 5: He's not worried about Seattle at all. Why has he
- 37:50Speaker 5: given up? Why have the Patriots given up 17 points?
- 37:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I think one thing that we've talked a lot about,
- 37:55Speaker 2: Deuce and I have talked a lot about on the preview, too,
- 37:58Speaker 2: was just, you know, seattle putting their heavy people on
- 38:02Speaker 2: the field and how the patriots want to match that
- 38:04Speaker 2: personnel wise defensively and i think that's the decision on
- 38:08Speaker 2: tuesday or whenever their tuesday is right now that mike
- 38:11Speaker 2: rabel and zach core and the defensive staff are coming
- 38:14Speaker 2: together trying to figure out when they put their two
- 38:17Speaker 2: tight ends on the field are we staying in nickel
- 38:20Speaker 2: or are we putting our base defense back on the
- 38:22Speaker 2: field because when they put base defense on the field
- 38:24Speaker 2: in the super bowl they got shredded So, you know,
- 38:26Speaker 2: you kind of have to decide. That mitigates my guy,
- 38:28Speaker 2: Marcus Jones.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Anthony kind of says what Paul was saying about the
- 38:36Speaker 1: Super Bowl. The game was sneaky close, but also a
- 38:38Speaker 1: sneaky blowout. We were down 9-0 halfway into the third.
- 38:42Speaker 2: It was not sneaky.
- 38:43Speaker 5: It was not sneaky.
- 38:44Speaker 2: It was a defensive blowout. There's a difference. Like, defensive blowouts,
- 38:48Speaker 2: it's lower scoring. It doesn't feel like they're, like.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Running away.
- 38:52Speaker 5: It was never a one-score game in the second half. Like,
- 38:56Speaker 5: That's the definition of not overly competitive. They never even
- 39:00Speaker 5: got that score, that oh-by-the-way score, to get it within
- 39:05Speaker 5: one score. Like, oh, if we stop them, we get
- 39:07Speaker 5: a ball back and we get a chance to tie.
- 39:08Speaker 5: They never even got that close.
- 39:10Speaker 10: What do you think the difference is, though, between those
- 39:13Speaker 10: two teams in the Super Bowl versus the difference between
- 39:15Speaker 10: these two teams now? Do you still feel that Seattle
- 39:17Speaker 10: vastly outclasses the Patriots?
- 39:20Speaker 5: No, because I think the Patriots didn't play very well
- 39:22Speaker 5: in that game. I think the Patriots are capable of
- 39:24Speaker 5: playing better than that. I saw them play better than
- 39:26Speaker 5: that during the year. Now maybe it's the Fred thing.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Maybe the reason they didn't play that well is because
- 39:32Speaker 5: they stepped up in weight class. We'll find out.
- 39:33Speaker 4: That's what's hard to figure out.
- 39:35Speaker 2: I think that Seattle's a little worse than they were
- 39:38Speaker 2: because teams have chipped away at their depth a little bit.
- 39:40Speaker 2: They lose Kenneth Walker. I don't think Kobe Bryant's a
- 39:43Speaker 2: game changer, but they lose a guy like Kobe Bryant,
- 39:45Speaker 2: Bowie Moffay.
- 39:46Speaker 1: It's a funny sentence.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Reek Wolin.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Reek Wolin as their other outside corner. So that's
- 39:53Speaker 2: what happens when you win the Super Bowl is that
- 39:55Speaker 2: everybody starts coming for your players.
- 39:57Speaker 5: And everybody starts coming for you, period. There was probably
- 40:02Speaker 5: more time spent around the league looking at Seattle specifically
- 40:06Speaker 5: defensively And figuring out how they're going to attack that.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Because that's just what happens to the Super Bowl champ.
- 40:13Speaker 5: That becomes a blueprint of what everybody's trying to do.
- 40:17Speaker 5: So I agree with that mentality. I think Seattle is
- 40:21Speaker 5: probably a little weaker than they were that day. I
- 40:25Speaker 5: don't know if the Patriots are better. We'll find that
- 40:27Speaker 5: out over the course of the season.
- 40:28Speaker 10: I wonder how Seattle's taking the Rams of it all.
- 40:30Speaker 10: It's interesting how Seattle won the Super Bowl. And the
- 40:33Speaker 10: Rams have made all these moves and are the clear-cut favorites. Like,
- 40:36Speaker 10: you know, maybe Seattle's trying to use that a little
- 40:37Speaker 10: bit as motivation of, like.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they think they're going to... You know, everyone's chalking
- 40:41Speaker 1: them in as winning... And they'd be wrecked. Yeah.
- 40:44Speaker 5: I mean, they would absolutely be wrecked.
- 40:45Speaker 2: I would pick Seattle in a game against the Rams. Yeah.
- 40:48Speaker 10: And, like, connected to what you said at the top
- 40:49Speaker 10: of it is, like, let's, you know, see if Mike
- 40:51Speaker 10: McDonald does it against this Rams team, you know?
- 40:54Speaker 4: And continues to do it.
- 40:55Speaker 10: I think he'll really, you know, truly solidify his place
- 40:57Speaker 10: as one of the, you know, best defensive coaches.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's already considered the best defensive coach,
- 41:03Speaker 2: if not the second best or something like that. And
- 41:06Speaker 2: you just see the scheme that they run is just
- 41:08Speaker 2: kind of taking over, kind of like the Shanahan tree
- 41:10Speaker 2: is taking over offense. This scheme is really starting to
- 41:13Speaker 2: take over defensive scheme, too. So even the Patriots have
- 41:17Speaker 2: have been their toes into some of the things that
- 41:20Speaker 2: Seattle does with the zone coverages and the fire zones
- 41:22Speaker 2: and things like that.
- 41:24Speaker 5: You'd really, really, I'm interested in that. You'd take Seattle
- 41:28Speaker 5: over the Rams right now. I thought the Rams were
- 41:30Speaker 5: the one team that had the antidote to that defense.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Stafford ripped them apart twice. They just couldn't stop them.
- 41:38Speaker 5: And I think the changes they've made on defense will
- 41:40Speaker 5: put them in a better position to stop Seattle this time.
- 41:44Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 41:45Speaker 2: The biggest change in that game to me would be McDuffie.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I think the Rams have had a great pass rush,
- 41:50Speaker 2: regardless of if it's Miles Garrett or Jared verse, but
- 41:53Speaker 2: them adding McDuffie and having like a legitimate number one corner. Now,
- 41:57Speaker 2: maybe that tilts the scale a little bit more towards
- 42:01Speaker 2: the Rams, but I just have a lot of respect for,
- 42:04Speaker 2: for what Seattle does defensively.
- 42:06Speaker 1: All right. Eight, five, five past 500 is the hotline
- 42:10Speaker 1: podcast at Patriots.com is the email address. Let's see what
- 42:13Speaker 1: people have to say. Anthony's in Seattle.
- 42:17Speaker 8: Hey, what's up, my people? How you guys doing?
- 42:20Speaker 6: Good.
- 42:20Speaker 1: You going to the game?
- 42:21Speaker 5: Boots on the ground.
- 42:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I bought my tickets on Saturday. So, yeah, me
- 42:25Speaker 8: and a couple of my brothers are going to the game.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 42:28Speaker 8: So, hey, that's a sneaky hot take, Evan. I wouldn't
- 42:33Speaker 8: take anybody over the Rams right now. I'm terrified of
- 42:35Speaker 8: those guys.
- 42:36Speaker 2: I've seen way too many super teams and dream teams.
- 42:39Speaker 8: Nothing like this.
- 42:41Speaker 5: Oh, I'm not saying that I would pencil in the
- 42:43Speaker 5: Rams for the title because of the reason Evan just said.
- 42:46Speaker 5: I just think they're better. I thought they were better
- 42:47Speaker 5: than Seattle last year. They ripped them apart twice.
- 42:50Speaker 1: What if Stafford starts to show his age?
- 42:54Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't pencil in the Rams
- 42:56Speaker 5: as the Super Bowl champ. They have a 40-year-old quarterback
- 42:58Speaker 5: with a bad back. That could fall apart in a blink.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 43:05Speaker 8: Sorry, I'm derailing the show a little bit right now,
- 43:07Speaker 8: and I feel bad because we've moved on to football talk,
- 43:09Speaker 8: but And, Evan, please just disregard if this has already
- 43:13Speaker 8: been got corrected on the show yesterday. But I was
- 43:17Speaker 8: just listening to Catch-22, your guys' episode from yesterday. And
- 43:20Speaker 8: I literally had to stop what I was doing and
- 43:22Speaker 8: call in because you guys were talking about sports nicknames.
- 43:26Speaker 8: And Barth said MJ for Michael Jordan. And I just
- 43:31Speaker 8: immediately was like, no, his nickname is Air MJ. It's
- 43:34Speaker 8: always been air. And I just wanted you to pass that.
- 43:36Speaker 8: There's more of a crossover phone call. Cause I just
- 43:38Speaker 8: want you to pass that.
- 43:39Speaker 1: So we were talking about, now we're going to get
- 43:41Speaker 1: into this big discussion because I know it's air Jordan,
- 43:44Speaker 1: but I, I don't remember anyone calling him air.
- 43:47Speaker 2: No, I don't either. I remember like they're the air
- 43:49Speaker 2: Jordans were like the sneakers, but I don't think his
- 43:52Speaker 2: nickname was there. Uh, they, so we had a conversation
- 43:56Speaker 2: about using JVR, AVT, like the nicknames for the players, uh,
- 44:02Speaker 2: And I said the only one that I really use
- 44:05Speaker 2: is pop because I feel like that's what everybody calls him.
- 44:09Speaker 2: He's been around for a little while. Like it just
- 44:12Speaker 2: that I'm not. But so then Alex was saying no initials.
- 44:16Speaker 2: And I was like, well, what about MJ?
- 44:18Speaker 1: What about AJ?
- 44:19Speaker 5: And he was like.
- 44:21Speaker 2: That one's a little different because it's Michael Jordan.
- 44:24Speaker 5: You mean like as A.J.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Brown? Yeah.
- 44:26Speaker 5: But that's what he goes by.
- 44:27Speaker 1: I know. That's not his real name.
- 44:29Speaker 5: No, I know, but he goes by A.J.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:32Speaker 5: My son goes by T.J.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:34Speaker 5: That's not his name.
- 44:35Speaker 1: No, it's his nickname.
- 44:36Speaker 5: But that's what he goes by.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Some people go by their nickname.
- 44:39Speaker 5: But I agree with Evan about Pop.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Ted Kennedy, that wasn't his name.
- 44:44Speaker 5: But you don't think that that's different?
- 44:46Speaker 1: No, I think you can go by your nickname is
- 44:49Speaker 1: my point.
- 44:50Speaker 3: I think there's, like, shortening your first name nicknames, like Alex.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 9: My name's Alexandra. But then there's, like, marketing nicknames, like
- 44:57Speaker 9: RG3 and CR7.
- 44:59Speaker 5: And that, I think, is different.
- 45:00Speaker 1: TB12.
- 45:01Speaker 9: TB12 probably wrote the book on this.
- 45:03Speaker 5: Right.
- 45:04Speaker 2: So that was what we were talking about.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Because that's how Julian Edelman's brand, J11, started was as
- 45:09Speaker 3: a joke to make fun of Tom's TB12.
- 45:11Speaker 9: And then it caught on.
- 45:12Speaker 1: So the thing is, like, to me, Pop is a
- 45:15Speaker 1: true nickname.
- 45:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Because you would call, hey, hey, Pop. But you would
- 45:20Speaker 1: never say, hey, TB12.
- 45:22Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:22Speaker 1: You know, you would never do that.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but did people, I don't know, but did people
- 45:26Speaker 2: call Jordan, like, did people just refer to him as MJ?
- 45:30Speaker 1: No, I think Jordan had the respect where it was Michael.
- 45:33Speaker 1: It was Michael.
- 45:34Speaker 2: The whole name.
- 45:34Speaker 5: When he first got in the league, he was known
- 45:37Speaker 5: as Air Jordan. Like, that became a big thing when
- 45:40Speaker 5: he had the whole thing with it. And that's kind
- 45:43Speaker 5: of why Nike... kind of came into that.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Yeah. But you would never, hey, hey, Air.
- 45:48Speaker 5: No one called him Air.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:50Speaker 5: No one called him Air.
- 45:50Speaker 2: No, I mean, Air Jordan's definitely a thing.
- 45:52Speaker 5: Air Jordan was kind of like him.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Yeah, sure.
- 45:55Speaker 5: Like, to Alex's point, the brand.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the brand. Yeah.
- 45:59Speaker 4: What about Flight Man?
- 46:00Speaker 1: Is that another one?
- 46:01Speaker 5: Coach Flight?
- 46:02Speaker 1: No, not Coach Flight.
- 46:03Speaker 5: That's a different thing.
- 46:04Speaker 2: No, that's like a part of the branding with Jordan.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Right, just the dude. The Jump Man. The Jump Man.
- 46:10Speaker 1: It's called the Jump Man. Okay. Yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 9: What about, like, Carlton Davis? Everyone in that locker room
- 46:15Speaker 9: calls him CD.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I don't know if we're on, like, initial level.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 2: You know, like, I don't feel comfortable with that.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I think initials are a nickname.
- 46:22Speaker 5: Initials are nickname-ish, but I don't... But Alex was saying...
- 46:25Speaker 5: I'm with Alex. I don't know him by that, so.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Nicknames that are initials and that's how jordan came up
- 46:34Speaker 2: because i was like well you can't dislike mj like
- 46:36Speaker 2: that's yeah like come on so that's how.
- 46:39Speaker 5: I don't have any problem with initials i think mj.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Was more his nickname than air was.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Yeah i don't remember anybody just calling him air right
- 46:48Speaker 5: i don't either like it was it was it was
- 46:50Speaker 5: kind of like the being was like air jordan yeah
- 46:54Speaker 5: But I don't remember anybody calling him air.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Good movie, though.
- 46:58Speaker 5: I don't remember.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Christian's in L.A. What's up, Christian?
- 47:03Speaker 13: Hey, you guys.
- 47:04Speaker 8: Hey, you guys.
- 47:05Speaker 13: Hey, you guys.
- 47:06Speaker 15: So the only other nickname I can think of that
- 47:08Speaker 15: people actively refer to is any other sports figure whose
- 47:12Speaker 15: name is Doc. You know, Dr. J, Doc Good.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Doc Rivers.
- 47:16Speaker 15: People call sports figures their name Doc. You know, for
- 47:18Speaker 15: some reason, I don't even know where Doc comes from.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Are they real doctors? Probably not.
- 47:22Speaker 4: But anyway, on to football.
- 47:24Speaker 15: I think there's a couple of things that people have
- 47:26Speaker 15: been glossing over when it comes to what happened with
- 47:28Speaker 15: the Patriots last year and who Seattle really is and
- 47:31Speaker 15: how that game unfolded. Remember, Sam Donald didn't look good
- 47:35Speaker 15: because his number one receiver was being actively shut down
- 47:38Speaker 15: for the entire game. They're usually reliant on Jackson Smith
- 47:44Speaker 15: and Jake to run the offense and get their big plays.
- 47:48Speaker 15: So that's why Donald really didn't look good. He was
- 47:50Speaker 15: stuck on his second and third option the whole entire game.
- 47:53Speaker 15: On the flip side of the ball, I think with
- 47:56Speaker 15: a new rookie running back, I don't see him really
- 47:59Speaker 15: being able to bounce it out to the side, bounce
- 48:01Speaker 15: it outside like Kenneth Walker did, because effectively that in
- 48:04Speaker 15: and of itself is what won the game for them,
- 48:07Speaker 15: not being able to stop that one type of play. Um,
- 48:10Speaker 15: when it comes down to people talking about what happened
- 48:12Speaker 15: with our schedule last year, when they refer to the
- 48:15Speaker 15: weakness of our schedule, they were referring to the weakness
- 48:17Speaker 15: of the caliber of quarterback that we played. Not so
- 48:20Speaker 15: much the weakness of the caliber of defense that we played.
- 48:23Speaker 15: We played some pretty good defenses all through the year.
- 48:25Speaker 15: So I just wanted to like set the record straight
- 48:27Speaker 15: when it came down to like, Oh man, And they
- 48:29Speaker 15: blow us out or, or why Sam Donald didn't look
- 48:32Speaker 15: good or what, what can possibly happen this game? I
- 48:35Speaker 15: think we're going to win the game, like 24 to
- 48:37Speaker 15: seven or 24. Wow.
- 48:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I love it. Overcome. I love it. Okay. Thanks, Christian.
- 48:44Speaker 2: I do agree with this. Kenneth Walker point. I do
- 48:46Speaker 2: think that that is pretty massive. You know, the way
- 48:49Speaker 2: Kenneth rock.
- 48:49Speaker 5: That was you, not me.
- 48:51Speaker 2: The way Kenneth Walker runs the ball is like, everybody's
- 48:53Speaker 2: at the point of attack all the time. Cause he can,
- 48:56Speaker 2: he has that kind of freedom and that, like sort
- 48:58Speaker 2: of looseness, the way that he runs. I don't know
- 49:01Speaker 2: if price is a built that way, or B is like,
- 49:05Speaker 2: as a rookie is going to be like, you know,
- 49:07Speaker 2: I'm going to bounce this run out the backside of
- 49:09Speaker 2: the formation because as much as that can hit, that
- 49:12Speaker 2: can also go the other direction where you're losing five
- 49:14Speaker 2: yards real quick. So I agree with that point. The
- 49:16Speaker 2: other points, Paul, you can take those.
- 49:20Speaker 5: I mean, I didn't have anything to do with the
- 49:22Speaker 5: running conversation. So he sort of disagreed with something that
- 49:27Speaker 5: I didn't say. So I have no take on Price
- 49:32Speaker 5: or Walker or whatever. Yeah, this guy's not as good
- 49:34Speaker 5: as Kenneth Walker. I mean, would anybody make that argument?
- 49:39Speaker 10: No, but I was just remembering rookie 2017 opener Kareem
- 49:44Speaker 10: Hunt going for 148 yards on the Patriots.
- 49:47Speaker 1: That was one out of blue.
- 49:50Speaker 5: What is generally considered to be one of the positions
- 49:53Speaker 5: that's easiest to sort of.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Running back. Yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 5: And I would just say Darnold was terrible in the
- 49:59Speaker 5: Super Bowl. It had nothing to do with... like jsn
- 50:03Speaker 5: and jsn was open plenty of times donald didn't get
- 50:05Speaker 5: him the ball there were other times there gonzalez was
- 50:08Speaker 5: on jsn and donald couldn't get him the ball like
- 50:11Speaker 5: donald was bad in the game it had nothing to
- 50:13Speaker 5: do with like forced to go to different guys other
- 50:16Speaker 5: guys he was missing open guys throughout the game right
- 50:20Speaker 5: i think the one thing that he did really well
- 50:23Speaker 5: was avoid pressure and i thought There was a chance that.
- 50:27Speaker 1: A couple times you thought they had him.
- 50:28Speaker 5: There was a chance that they had him.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Especially Mill and Williams.
- 50:30Speaker 5: Yeah, they had a chance to get some negative plays
- 50:33Speaker 5: and put them behind the chains, and he avoided them.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Chris writes in, you haven't talked about Drake going into
- 50:40Speaker 1: his first game fully healthy, which he wasn't for their
- 50:43Speaker 1: last meeting. That's true.
- 50:46Speaker 4: I'm sure that's true of a lot of guys at
- 50:48Speaker 4: the end of the season, you know, but.
- 50:50Speaker 10: You take that and now what kind of rust does
- 50:53Speaker 10: he have?
- 50:53Speaker 1: So, you know what I mean?
- 50:54Speaker 10: I feel like you might have lost. I mean, I
- 50:56Speaker 10: don't know what extent the shoulder was at that point.
- 50:59Speaker 10: I don't think that that made that big of a
- 51:01Speaker 10: difference in the game. I think it went the way
- 51:02Speaker 10: it was going to go.
- 51:04Speaker 6: Yeah. I don't know.
- 51:06Speaker 2: I looked at that game from Drake's standpoint and thought
- 51:09Speaker 2: it was more mental than it was physical. I thought
- 51:11Speaker 2: he struggled with the game mentally. I think it felt
- 51:15Speaker 2: just from like an aesthetic standpoint felt a little bit
- 51:19Speaker 2: too big. forum. And then I also think that Seattle
- 51:23Speaker 2: got them schematically too. I don't know if that, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 2: who knows?
- 51:26Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 51:27Speaker 2: I didn't, I wasn't in, I didn't stand in the pocket,
- 51:29Speaker 2: but that, that's how I look. That's how I look
- 51:32Speaker 2: at it.
- 51:32Speaker 6: Not in the pocket. I don't know.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Like, I don't know if your shoulder hurts. Like there's
- 51:36Speaker 2: all of a sudden you can't like, you don't seeing
- 51:38Speaker 2: things right. Or what speeds you up. I don't know.
- 51:42Speaker 5: I think he's probably being a good team guy and, and,
- 51:46Speaker 5: you know, downplaying, you know, any physical limitations that he
- 51:49Speaker 5: might've had. I'm sure that they impacted him. Didn't Darnold
- 51:52Speaker 5: go into that game with an injury? Didn't he miss
- 51:55Speaker 5: practice time? Didn't he get to the Superbowl?
- 51:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:58Speaker 5: Maybe that's why he played like.
- 52:00Speaker 2: He had like a core.
- 52:01Speaker 6: Crap.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Oblique core thing that he was like dealing with.
- 52:05Speaker 5: He couldn't throw like the week of the Superbowl, if
- 52:07Speaker 5: I recall.
- 52:08Speaker 2: But I don't.
- 52:10Speaker 5: And he threw in the Super Bowl like he couldn't throw.
- 52:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:13Speaker 2: I mean, everybody hits the Super Bowl. Everybody's banged up
- 52:15Speaker 2: at that point.
- 52:16Speaker 5: That was Mike's point.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Franklin in Baltimore. How do you see this game playing
- 52:20Speaker 1: out if Darnold plays his best? I thought he was
- 52:23Speaker 1: not so sneaky bad in the Super Bowl. And if
- 52:25Speaker 1: he had played better, the game probably ends up as
- 52:28Speaker 1: a decisive blowout. I'm also not keen to just write
- 52:31Speaker 1: off that possibility either, since Darnold has shown he can
- 52:35Speaker 1: play good football for stretches of time.
- 52:38Speaker 5: I think that is going to be a big key.
- 52:41Speaker 13: I do.
- 52:42Speaker 5: I think if Seattle's offense plays well, the Patriots are
- 52:45Speaker 5: going to be in a shootout, and there's going to
- 52:48Speaker 5: be a lot of pressure on the road in that
- 52:50Speaker 5: environment against that defense to score 30-plus.
- 52:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I'd agree.
- 52:55Speaker 10: I just guess I'm trying to find out what is
- 52:57Speaker 10: Sam Darnold. You know, like, what is a good Sam
- 52:59Speaker 10: Darnold performance versus what is a truly bad Sam Darnold performance?
- 53:02Speaker 10: I mean, he led the league in turnovers last year.
- 53:04Speaker 5: He's watched the NFC Championship game in the Super Bowl.
- 53:06Speaker 5: That's the good and the bad.
- 53:07Speaker 1: There's just a.
- 53:09Speaker 5: He was really good against the Rams and really bad
- 53:11Speaker 5: against the Patriots.
- 53:12Speaker 4: It's hard to pin him down.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Robert writes in, how refreshing to finally hear talk about
- 53:17Speaker 1: actual games.
- 53:18Speaker 4: That's right.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Kind of a passive-aggressive shot at us, I think. I'm
- 53:22Speaker 1: so confident with the offensive improvement that I drafted both
- 53:26Speaker 1: Drake and Ramondre to my fantasy teams. Wanted A.J., but
- 53:31Speaker 1: someone else beat me to it. I share the concern
- 53:34Speaker 1: that the defense won't be as effective, but trust that
- 53:36Speaker 1: Vrabel and the coaching staff will get the most out
- 53:38Speaker 1: of them, but they've got to get Gonzo signed before
- 53:41Speaker 1: the season. It's getting to the same point as hearing
- 53:44Speaker 1: about the draft week after week and month after month.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Wake me up when it's over. My prediction for the
- 53:49Speaker 1: opener is a narrow Patriots win, 25-20, with Borgalis putting
- 53:54Speaker 1: it away with a late field goal. Strap up and LFG.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Yeah, that was, I mean, sorry, Paul, I got to
- 54:01Speaker 4: do this though.
- 54:01Speaker 10: I mean, the specialty is something we talked a lot
- 54:03Speaker 10: about of just all the change on the Patriots side and,
- 54:06Speaker 10: you know, bringing in a new punter who's now going
- 54:08Speaker 10: to hold for Bora Gallas.
- 54:09Speaker 1: We saw what happened. We had a new long snapper.
- 54:11Speaker 10: I don't know how connected it was, but suddenly he
- 54:14Speaker 10: lost his consistency. Is the field goal operation up to speed?
- 54:17Speaker 10: I mean, I'd love to, you know, I love Marcus Jones.
- 54:19Speaker 1: I think that's a.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Strength of the Patriots. But, you know, who are the gunners?
- 54:22Speaker 4: Who are the vice guys?
- 54:23Speaker 10: Who are the guys running down the field making the
- 54:25Speaker 10: tackles and special teams? It's easy to spend so much
- 54:28Speaker 10: time on these offenses and defenses because they're really interesting
- 54:30Speaker 10: and really good. But I really think this could be
- 54:32Speaker 10: a game where special teams comes into play, especially, you know,
- 54:35Speaker 10: you've got rookies for the Patriots. You've got maybe even
- 54:38Speaker 10: guys that just arrived here in the last, like, five days,
- 54:40Speaker 10: you know, going to be playing meaningful snaps in that
- 54:43Speaker 10: kind of environment.
- 54:44Speaker 4: I think it's going to be a big challenge.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Evan had a takeoff to get ready for Vrabel and
- 54:49Speaker 1: locker room.
- 54:51Speaker 5: I think Mike was ready and he texted me and
- 54:54Speaker 5: he said, where's Evan? We're waiting for him.
- 54:56Speaker 1: That's right. We're not going to start until Evan gets here.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Anthony says, what are the realistic chances we win against Seattle?
- 55:02Speaker 1: I personally like our chances. They've had turnover at corner.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Eben Worry, how do you say his last name? Eben Worry.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Eben Worry is apparently hurt, and our offense has drastically
- 55:13Speaker 1: improved as far as the receivers and line goes. That's
- 55:16Speaker 1: the hope.
- 55:17Speaker 4: Eben Worry's status is definitely something to keep an eye on.
- 55:19Speaker 10: I watched the Seattle guys.
- 55:22Speaker 4: They don't even really know right now the guy's covering him.
- 55:25Speaker 4: You watch hard knocks.
- 55:26Speaker 10: Even Mike McDonald said himself he's a huge part of
- 55:28Speaker 10: what we do. And even if he is healthy, I
- 55:30Speaker 10: think they're probably going to manage him a little bit
- 55:32Speaker 10: just because they know. They got a big war to fight,
- 55:35Speaker 10: you know, with the Rams and this whole season-long thing. And,
- 55:38Speaker 10: you know, an inter-conference game against the Patriots in week
- 55:41Speaker 10: one is not the biggest game for this team.
- 55:44Speaker 1: They got a lot bigger fish to fry. Big Mick
- 55:47Speaker 1: from Worcester writes in. Big Mick, sounds about right. He's
- 55:50Speaker 1: been a Worcester native surrounded by Finns fans in Miami
- 55:54Speaker 1: for the last 26 years. This is my second year
- 55:57Speaker 1: following every show, so thrilled to discover your work. It's awesome.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Pundits say that May's Achilles heel in the playoffs was
- 56:04Speaker 1: cover six. I'm thinking we go four wide. Brown, Dobbs, Williams, Pop,
- 56:09Speaker 1: spread creates running lanes and options. Your thought on this scheme?
- 56:13Speaker 1: I'll listen off air.
- 56:16Speaker 10: I just don't think a certain coverage is like he
- 56:18Speaker 10: just can't figure it out. I mean, you know, there's
- 56:20Speaker 10: answers to every coverage, and I think some of it's circumstantial.
- 56:23Speaker 10: Evan said, you know, Seattle has a big lead. They're
- 56:27Speaker 10: teeing off. they can do what they want. They know
- 56:29Speaker 10: Drake's going to try to throw deep. So, you know,
- 56:31Speaker 10: they're rolling the dice with the coverages and confusing him
- 56:34Speaker 10: and stuff. So I, I just, I mean, I think
- 56:35Speaker 10: that's definitely an overall point of Drake may here in
- 56:39Speaker 10: year two with Josh is just a better understanding of
- 56:41Speaker 10: what teams are going to try to do to you. And,
- 56:43Speaker 10: you know, Tom and Josh had such a long history
- 56:47Speaker 10: together where they could reach back and talk about games
- 56:50Speaker 10: and things that defenses did. And Drake and Josh are
- 56:53Speaker 10: just starting to build that, you know, Mac Jones never
- 56:55Speaker 10: got that second year with Josh. So I'm, I'm, You know,
- 56:58Speaker 10: hopeful that mentally, that's just, to me, that's everything. Does
- 57:01Speaker 10: he look like he's a little bit more calm, a
- 57:02Speaker 10: little bit more in control? But, again, I don't expect
- 57:05Speaker 10: him to be like the grandmaster of the offense now,
- 57:07Speaker 10: you know, putting everything here and there.
- 57:08Speaker 9: Okay.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Darius and Louisville, I agree with Deuce. It was a
- 57:12Speaker 1: good game, the Super Bowl. Did you say it was
- 57:14Speaker 1: a good game?
- 57:15Speaker 10: I just thought it was maybe a little bit more
- 57:16Speaker 10: competitive than Paul and Evan did.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Just like he said, we were a couple of plays
- 57:20Speaker 1: away early in the game. Maybe if we make those plays,
- 57:23Speaker 1: the game would have been different, in my opinion. Yes,
- 57:25Speaker 1: the outcome didn't look good. But the plays that were
- 57:28Speaker 1: there to be made, we didn't make them. Darnold should
- 57:31Speaker 1: have had two picks in the first half. I think
- 57:33Speaker 1: we win the game 28-20.
- 57:34Speaker 5: You should have had three touchdowns in the first quarter. Like,
- 57:41Speaker 5: what plays did the Patriots not make on offense that
- 57:44Speaker 5: they had?
- 57:47Speaker 10: He overthrew Hunter Henry on one. I think it was
- 57:49Speaker 10: one third down. He kind of missed him. But that's
- 57:51Speaker 10: the only one.
- 57:52Speaker 4: I mean, I just rewatched the first half of it.
- 57:56Speaker 1: I go by feeling, whether I'm doing picks or when
- 57:58Speaker 1: I'm watching the game, I didn't have a good feeling. Yeah.
- 58:01Speaker 1: I know, like, you didn't give up a touchdown in
- 58:03Speaker 1: the first half. So you're hoping you come out in
- 58:06Speaker 1: the second half and all of a sudden the offense
- 58:08Speaker 1: finds it. But there weren't any indications that they were
- 58:12Speaker 1: going to. It was completely hope because they just couldn't
- 58:16Speaker 1: do anything on offense. And when you're losing the battle
- 58:19Speaker 1: in the trenches, you're going to lose.
- 58:22Speaker 5: If that was two teams that you didn't have any
- 58:24Speaker 5: vested interest in. you would have been bored to death
- 58:27Speaker 5: in the second half and never once thought the game
- 58:29Speaker 5: was in.
- 58:30Speaker 1: Probably.
- 58:31Speaker 5: Now, when it's your team, either way, if you're ahead,
- 58:35Speaker 5: you're not going to say, oh, this game is over.
- 58:37Speaker 5: I'm sure Seattle fans were still engrossed in the game.
- 58:40Speaker 5: Because it was only a two score game when it
- 58:43Speaker 5: seemed like it was much more than that. And Patriots
- 58:45Speaker 5: fans are like, we, we saw Brady do this for
- 58:48Speaker 5: 20 years. I was trying to convince my wife the
- 58:50Speaker 5: whole second half that the game wasn't over. And in
- 58:52Speaker 5: my mind, I was thinking it was over, but I
- 58:54Speaker 5: was trying to like, and I still hope.
- 58:57Speaker 1: And the reverse of what you say, if, if you
- 59:00Speaker 1: were a Patriots fan and they were doing to Seattle,
- 59:03Speaker 1: what Seattle was doing, the Patriots, you'd have a pretty
- 59:05Speaker 1: good feeling going into that second half. Be like, okay,
- 59:08Speaker 1: we haven't scored a lot, but they can't move the
- 59:11Speaker 1: ball on us.
- 59:11Speaker 5: If they had scored.
- 59:13Speaker 1: And that's 2003, Patriots.
- 59:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 59:15Speaker 1: You get a 9-0 lead in 2003, the game's over.
- 59:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:17Speaker 1: The game's over.
- 59:19Speaker 5: And that's kind of how I felt in the game,
- 59:21Speaker 5: the way the game was being played, is that even
- 59:24Speaker 5: though it was only 9-0, 12-0, 19-0, it seems like
- 59:25Speaker 5: double that. Like, it just seemed like it was so
- 59:30Speaker 5: hard for the Patriots just to get a first down.
- 59:33Speaker 6: Right.
- 59:33Speaker 5: Let alone get a touchdown.
- 59:34Speaker 9: Was it the Matt Collins touchdown? Where you're like, okay.
- 59:37Speaker 5: Which was, like, miraculous.
- 59:38Speaker 3: If they put it together, this next drive, like, this
- 59:41Speaker 3: is a game again. And I think it was an intercept.
- 59:43Speaker 1: It's like my Red Sox. you know, you're, you're down three, nothing,
- 59:47Speaker 1: but you're getting hits. You're getting guys. You have chances
- 59:50Speaker 1: because guys are on base. You just need to put
- 59:52Speaker 1: it together. That gives you hope. But when you're being
- 59:54Speaker 1: shut down three, you know, one, two, three, every inning,
- 59:58Speaker 1: then you've, we can't, we just can't.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: And Mike hit it early in the show, you know,
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: about just how many like bad situations they were in
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: offensively right off the go. It's like second and 10,
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: third and 11, you know, Second and eight, you know,
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: they just couldn't get ahead of the chains with any
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: degree of consistency throughout the first three quarters of the game.
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: The fourth quarter, when the game is over, you know,
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: it was a little bit different. They were just throwing
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: the ball on every down. But the first three quarters
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: of that game was dominant.
- 1:00:30Speaker 10: You know, what was weird to me was that I
- 1:00:31Speaker 10: talked to David Anderson this offseason for the Super Bowl
- 1:00:34Speaker 10: 51 piece I wrote for the Game Day magazine. And,
- 1:00:36Speaker 10: you know, he said Bill always said going into that
- 1:00:38Speaker 10: Super Bowl, which was David's first, that it's always... two
- 1:00:41Speaker 10: different games. The first half, second half, it can be
- 1:00:44Speaker 10: completely different. And that's kind of what I was thinking
- 1:00:46Speaker 10: going into the second half of that Super Bowl, and
- 1:00:49Speaker 10: it wasn't different.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: That was what was more surprising.
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: And that's a really good example because I'm sure that
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: David is talking specifically about that game, the Atlanta game.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: And Fred's point is valid because while the scoreboard was
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: out of control in the Atlanta game.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: They moved the ball.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: The Patriots moved the ball, blunt fumbles. The Patriots moved
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: the ball, Brady throws a pick six. You're just saying
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: to yourself, if we can just avoid the mistake, we're
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: moving the ball against this team, and then all of
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: a sudden in the second half, they moved it. And
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: they didn't make the mistake, and they finished the drives. Now,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: it was still a miraculous comeback. But I agree with
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: sort of that mentality that David Andrews probably had and
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: a lot of players probably had. Like, if we can
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: just get out of our own way, they're not really
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: doing anything to stop us. Whereas Seattle was doing everything
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: to stop them.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: There's hope based on things that you're seeing and then
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: there's just blind faith.
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: You know, and I had blind faith.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: I had a little Brady and I had some blind
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: faith in that game just from working here for so
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: long and seeing so many Patriots teams do that.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Right. That, that out to me was the difference though.
- 1:01:57Speaker 10: That was, and you know, maybe Drake may get somewhere
- 1:01:59Speaker 10: close to that point, but you knew with Tom Brady
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: in a game, you're always, he was going to make
- 1:02:03Speaker 10: a push at some point, no matter how shut down
- 1:02:05Speaker 10: he got in that, you know, that's a very special,
- 1:02:07Speaker 10: unique moment in time.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: This is not that Patriots team.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: So we're waiting for Mike Vrabel. He's going to be
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: going any minute now, I guess.
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:16Speaker 13: Grapes.
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: So we'll have that live.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: Girl, Osaka's having a hard time closing out this match.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: She keeps getting her serve broken.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: And a little bit of trouble in the second set.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: All right. Spee and Fresno, I'm more Drake skeptical than
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: the average fan, but more agnostic than disbelieving. Not sure
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: where I land on the following statement, but what would
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: you say to someone who felt we were a quarterback
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: away from winning the Super Bowl last year?
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Ooh.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: I just wonder what quarterback they think that was.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I think they were an offensive line away from winning
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: that Super Bowl.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: I would argue, what quarterback do you think would have
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: won that game?
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I think they were an offensive line away.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Put the MVP in that game, taking the hits that
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Drake May took.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Hit the MVP runner-up.
- 1:03:04Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, it'll be fun to not have to
- 1:03:08Speaker 10: dissect it anymore, but I think it's a great example
- 1:03:13Speaker 10: of a unique rematch. They haven't played in the preseason.
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: You've got to go right in there. You've got to
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: watch them raise the banner from the game you lost.
- 1:03:21Speaker 10: And I think maybe what's most interesting to me is
- 1:03:23Speaker 10: just what are the conversations Mike McDonald's having? Because it's like, well,
- 1:03:27Speaker 10: we did work great. Do you just try to do
- 1:03:29Speaker 10: it again? I think you kind of touched on this, Pauly.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: It's like, you know, or do you know that Josh
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: McDaniel is a really smart guy?
- 1:03:34Speaker 10: He's going to identify some areas where they probably misplanned
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: or whatever.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: And so what are your adjustments to their adjustments going
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: to be? Or are you overthinking and say, it's week one.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Let's just get after him again.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: I'm with you.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: And let it fly.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: Evan obviously disagrees. I just think that he's, I have
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: too much respect for him that he's just going to say, oh,
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: we're just going to take Witherspoon and we're going to
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: float him around a little bit, you know, four or
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: five times. And they're not going to be able to
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: know where he's coming from. And they're not going to
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: pick him up. I've got to think that McDonald's is
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: going to say McDaniels is too good for that. He's
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: going to have, he's going to have an answer for
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: that this time around. And Drake Mays is going to
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: have an answer for that this time around. And we've
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: got to do something a little bit different. I'm not
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: expecting them not to blitz or not to do some
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: of the coverages, you know, whatever, you know, the different
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: schemes that they have. Yeah, they're going to fall back
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: on what they do best. But I just think you
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: might see it look a little different. And especially if
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: him and Warrie can't play or he's limited in his play,
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: that might change just in and of itself. That might
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: change the way they look.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Uh, let's go to Lemonster. Uh, Riley is there. What's up, Riley?
- 1:04:43Speaker 14: Hey guys.
- 1:04:43Speaker 13: Uh, can you hear me?
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:04:44Speaker 13: Uh, I just had a few questions. Um, I wanted
- 1:04:49Speaker 13: to ask you what we got.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Okay. We're going to have to take a break. Uh, Riley,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: stay on hold on hold, please. And we're going to
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: go to Mike Vrabel.
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: Did play Seattle seven months ago.
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: I mean, I don't think that it, I mean, as
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: far as the, the players that they've had and then
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: the play style, Maybe.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: I mean, we'll have to block them better.
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: We'll have to be able to run football better.
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: We'll have to be able to stop the run better.
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: I mean, there's a lot of things that we're going
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: to have to do better based on the personnel that
- 1:05:20Speaker 7: they have. You know, they may do some of the
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: same things. They may change. We'll have to be ready
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: for a lot of those. But, I mean, I think
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: that the players are there, the ones that contributed heavily
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: and that are there, you know, really good players that
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: we're going to have to understand their play style and
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: what they do and how they rush and how they.
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: Block.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: I think that's been about the only thing that you
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: can really take away from it and just be ready
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: for the style that we think that they may run
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: offensively and defensively.
- 1:05:53Speaker 12: Obviously different players respond in different ways to different situations,
- 1:05:58Speaker 12: but in your experience, is there any way to adequately
- 1:06:00Speaker 12: prepare a rookie for his first NFL experience, especially when
- 1:06:04Speaker 12: you go into a game We.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: Try to give them as much as.
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: We can here and stress them as much as we
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: possibly can in practice and in noise and situations, but
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: probably not. I don't know if there's a great way
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: to be able to do that for their first game
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: and the experiences and the emotions that they're going to have,
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: but it'll also be something that they'll never forget.
- 1:06:32Speaker 16: Mike, related to the Super Bowl, Sean McVay coming off
- 1:06:35Speaker 16: his first Super Bowl talked about that it was killing
- 1:06:38Speaker 16: him that he got outcoached in the game. And you're
- 1:06:41Speaker 16: reflecting on the Super Bowl. Did you think that you
- 1:06:43Speaker 16: and your staff were outcoached in that game?
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: I mean, I'm not going to reflect back on it.
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: We say the same thing every time we lose. We
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: get outcoached. We get outplayed. When we win, it's on
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: our players, but, you know, That's a long time ago.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: We'll need to play better. We'll need to coach better
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: to give ourselves a chance in that environment. It's always
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: been the same. We try to be as consistent as
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: we possibly can after wins and then after losses. You're
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: always looking for things that you could have done differently
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: as a coach and as a player.
- 1:07:19Speaker 17: As you go to this team, how much of what
- 1:07:22Speaker 17: you did in the offseason was based upon what you
- 1:07:24Speaker 17: learned about the group in the in the Super Bowl
- 1:07:27Speaker 17: and areas that you wanted to improve?
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: I don't think that the Super Bowl was the only
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: factor in the decisions that we made. I think you
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: evaluate your roster. You look at the guys that you
- 1:07:45Speaker 7: want to move forward with and the guys that you
- 1:07:47Speaker 7: feel like maybe moved.
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: On in free agency.
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: You look at the draft and you try to figure
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: out who the best guys that come onto your team
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: that you have a vision for. So, I mean, the
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: games that we all, every game that we played, I
- 1:08:03Speaker 7: think factors into it. You know, you just, you have
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: to be at your best in this league at every moment.
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: You know, whether that's going on the road in Seattle,
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: it's playing at home or playoff games.
- 1:08:18Speaker 12: As a player, what's the biggest difference you see in
- 1:08:20Speaker 12: Drake from the guy who walked off the field in
- 1:08:22Speaker 12: the Super Bowl to the guy who's going to be
- 1:08:23Speaker 12: going into Seattle next week?
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: I think just more comfort in what we're doing, more command,
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: more understanding to be able to operate and get us
- 1:08:34Speaker 7: into the best plays. I think there's probably a comfort
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: level with once you know your job really, really well,
- 1:08:42Speaker 7: you can help other people do their job and hopefully
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: that that's the case where he's sharing details of the
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: play with guys that are in there or he's getting
- 1:08:51Speaker 7: guys lined up or making sure that you know, we're
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: legal or the timing of the motions. And I think
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: as the, as you understand the, your knowledge increases, uh,
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: hopefully the details do as well.
- 1:09:03Speaker 18: This probably relates to what Andrew was just asking in
- 1:09:06Speaker 18: terms of Christian Gonzalez, does he.
- 1:09:07Speaker 19: Have better player today than he was when we saw
- 1:09:11Speaker 19: him in February?
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: And if so, how?
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: I mean, again, I, he's put a lot of great
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: work in the competitiveness and practices. Um, you know, he's
- 1:09:21Speaker 7: never really stressed. There's a very, he's a very, I think, comfortable,
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: and I don't mean that by lazy. It's just that
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: he's not stressed. And then when he bursts, he bursts. And,
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: you know, when he has a chance to go for
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: an interception, he does. When he has a chance to,
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: you know, stab, he makes great decisions. You know, he
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: plays square. He's athletic and fast. So, I mean, I've
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: seen a It's not a player that's been sitting around
- 1:09:50Speaker 7: there just waiting. It's a player that's every chance that
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: he has looked to improve, challenge, two-minute situations, normal down
- 1:10:03Speaker 7: and distances, third down.
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: I've seen a very competitive player.
- 1:10:07Speaker 18: I was wondering what your reaction to that was and
- 1:10:12Speaker 18: what the organization's reaction was. Christian's trainer went on the
- 1:10:15Speaker 18: radio yesterday Talked about some of the contract negotiations.
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: Sorry, I didn't hear you. I was talking over you.
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: No, again, no comments or nothing new to report with
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: Christian other than I think I pretty much covered everything
- 1:10:30Speaker 7: I could there with Mike's question, but nothing new to
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: report contractually. Trying to get him ready for the football game,
- 1:10:37Speaker 7: trying to get him ready on the first and second
- 1:10:39Speaker 7: down stuff that we're doing today and how he can
- 1:10:43Speaker 7: help us win.
- 1:10:44Speaker 20: Last time we talked to Christian, Mike, he did not
- 1:10:47Speaker 20: commit to playing week one without a new contract. Would
- 1:10:50Speaker 20: you and your coaching staff have to create a plan
- 1:10:53Speaker 20: without him for this game against Seattle?
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: We have to prepare for everything that potentially happens, whether
- 1:11:01Speaker 7: that's players' availability through multiple different reasons. We'll have to
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: be ready for a lot of things as we work
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: here into week one and and the craziness of the
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: national football league and the journey that we're about to
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: go on.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: Is there much concern that the longer this thing draws out,
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: that it's just continuing to be a distraction for Christian,
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: something that's negatively affecting maybe his relationship with the team?
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: I think we want to try to be as ready
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: and prepared for the football game as we possibly can.
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: You know, I think distractions come, um, in a lot
- 1:11:40Speaker 7: of different ways, and it's how we handle them, how
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: we respond to them.
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: So, again, I love coaching Christian. He's a valuable member
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: of this.
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: Football team, and we'll continue to have discussions, but I
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: don't have anything else to add about the contract.
- 1:11:57Speaker 9: Mike, are you expecting Christian to play.
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: In Seattle?
- 1:12:02Speaker 7: As I said a couple days ago, as the head coach,
- 1:12:07Speaker 7: I expect every player that's healthy and under contract to
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: practice and to play. And again, that may change based
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: on my conversations with different players and the plan that
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: they have each and every day when you talk about
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: practice or what the plan may be for the football game.
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: So that goes with.
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: This situation and anybody else that would fall underneath that,
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: that that's what our expectation is.
- 1:12:34Speaker 19: My three kid has talked about one thing he wanted
- 1:12:37Speaker 19: to work on this year. was getting the ball out quickly,
- 1:12:40Speaker 19: among many things that he's working on. And I just
- 1:12:42Speaker 19: wanted to ask you what you've observed from him through
- 1:12:45Speaker 19: the practices and if you can really assess that when
- 1:12:48Speaker 19: you're not.
- 1:12:49Speaker 7: I mean, I think that that's great, but there's also
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: a design to the play and there's a timing element to.
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: When we can get the ball out quickly.
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: Based on the route, based on the depth of the route,
- 1:12:59Speaker 7: the location of the route. And we can't just raise
- 1:13:02Speaker 7: it up and throw it the second that we get
- 1:13:05Speaker 7: it every single snap. But, you know, we went through
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: a lot of details this morning about our first and
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: second down offense and listen to the players answer offensively
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: about some of the details and the different plays and
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: the concepts that we have on first and second down.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: And I think it was very reassuring just to hear
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: the different positions or the different players talk about each
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: of those details. So there's times when the ball can
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: come out quick and there's certainly times when when it can't,
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: based on the concept that we have.
- 1:13:35Speaker 14: I'm curious your thoughts on Drake, Hunter, Morgan, Robert, Kevin,
- 1:13:40Speaker 14: and Marcus being named captains this season.
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: Those guys, since I've been here, the five that were
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: here last year were.
- 1:13:52Speaker 7: Great leaders, very consistent players, very consistent demeanor in their preparation,
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: and the type of teammates that they were. We had
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: a Kevin this year, so I'm always appreciative of those
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: guys that lead.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: We'll have a leadership group as well that will assist them.
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: Again, we'll meet, but it's not like we have to
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: have a standard meeting for them to approach me and
- 1:14:18Speaker 7: talk about something.
- 1:14:19Speaker 20: The Athletic released or published its findings after its review
- 1:14:25Speaker 20: into Diana Rossini's reporting. Curious if you have any reaction
- 1:14:28Speaker 20: to that.
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: No, I don't have any reaction.
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: We're moved on and focused on Seattle and focused on
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: the Patriots and focused on getting better this week.
- 1:14:37Speaker 20: Do you feel like that situation is fully behind you?
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: I'll try to just say that I've moved on and
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: excited about this new opportunity here as we start this season.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Your final question?
- 1:14:48Speaker 20: You were talking about dialing back before ramping up over
- 1:14:50Speaker 20: the course of the game week there.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Is this the day when it's kind of full speed
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: ahead or is that Wednesday?
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: No, we'll go with some speed today.
- 1:14:58Speaker 7: I mean, we only get 14 padded practices through 17 weeks,
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: 11 of which have to be in the first 11 weeks.
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: So we'll be in the shells.
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: We'll have to start to learn how to practice with
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: shells on, without shoulder pads, which I think is something
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: that good teams know how to do. I think that
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: they can go with speed, and it's not a jog through.
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: There's speed, but there's no collisions. but there has to
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: be contact. It's practice. We have to get these reps
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: for first and second down. So, no, I'm looking forward
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: to seeing where we're at here going into the first
- 1:15:34Speaker 7: and second down offense.
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: Thanks, guys. Appreciate it.

- 1:17:55Speaker 9: There were some people talking about.
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: 12, 13 wins.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Who?
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: Tom Curran. But I have not heard.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: See, he includes the media in these people.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: Okay, Fred, all due respect, I really don't care what
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: Joe the Plumber has for a pick.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: See, I don't... He died.
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: People who watch the league, watch the team, and analyze
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: what they've seen, you can dismiss their opinions too, but
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: their opinions are a little bit more valuable than just
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: some random fan who just wants the team to win.
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: And that's what he's picking.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I look at the zeitgeist.
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: Or some random.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I want to know. what the zeitgeist is saying.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: Well, you don't know the zeitgeist from listening to 98.5.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: You get a cross-section.
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: You don't get a cross-section.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: And it's not just radio. I look at social media.
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: Yeah, that's even worse.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean, where else are you going to? Where
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: are these people that are worth listening to if it's
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: not social media, it's not the radio? I mean, where
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: do you go? This is what I'm talking about, analysts.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: He's so obsessed with the media.
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: Why am I obsessed with it? I'm talking about having
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: a prediction for a team.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: I know, but you care so much about what they say.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: I don't care about it. I'm telling you, I care
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: more about someone who's paid to give me an opinion
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: on a sport than I do someone who watches it casually.
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I don't really think that's controversial as a team.
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: That's another great moment from.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: All right, back here on Patriots Unfiltered, it's Paul, Deuce, Alex,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: and Fred, and the other Alex in the booth. Evan
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: is off to the New Balance Athletic Center for media
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: availability now.
- 1:19:55Speaker 9: Emphasis on the S, athletics.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Athletics Center.
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: Deuce, what do you got?
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: Well, it's also time for the co-pilot question of the week.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: We're back.
- 1:20:05Speaker 10: Presented by Microsoft Co-Pilot, where every day is game day
- 1:20:08Speaker 10: and where every decision is powered by insight and innovation.
- 1:20:10Speaker 10: Microsoft technology helps to make decisions faster, insights sharper, and
- 1:20:15Speaker 10: strategies more adaptive.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: And it's kind of a stump the grump one a
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: little bit, Paul.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Looking forward to it.
- 1:20:20Speaker 10: In the last 25 years of NFL opening games, how
- 1:20:23Speaker 10: many times has the defending Super Bowl champ been upset?
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: Lost?
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: You mean?
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Four. Then that's it.
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: Thanks a lot.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: Great segment.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: You got it?
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: How'd you get that?
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: Did you know?
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: No?
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: 17-4, I think, is the record.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Very good.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Did you look that up for something you were doing?
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: I've heard it a lot this week.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: Well, probably the most notable one, and I brought it up.
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: I was here for it.
- 1:20:52Speaker 10: Pretty miserable, that Kansas City loss in the 2017 opener
- 1:20:55Speaker 10: where rookie Kareem Hunt ran all over the Patriots.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: That was one.
- 1:20:59Speaker 10: Another little interesting tidbit I found with this was the
- 1:21:02Speaker 10: Giants lost.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: Both openers after beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
- 1:21:05Speaker 10: So in 42 and 46, the next year in their opener,
- 1:21:08Speaker 10: they lost the first time To the.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Who was that? Never mind. Washington. Sorry, Washington and Dallas.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Two division games for the Giants.
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: So do those not both count? The Giants, two losses?
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: Because I know the Chiefs lost at home to the
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: Lions in an opener. The Patriots lost at home to
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: the Chiefs in an opener. The Rams lost at home
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: to the Bills. Was that like not... I don't know.
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: We'll have to check with Co-Pilot on that one.
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: I'm already thinking I have more than four losses.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: There was something weird, though. I mean, I don't know
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: if you guys remember because you did.
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: That was off the top of my head.
- 1:21:42Speaker 10: You witnessed a lot of banner-raising ceremonies, though. How long
- 1:21:44Speaker 10: does it go back where the opening game was the
- 1:21:46Speaker 10: actual Super Bowl champ?
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Has it always been?
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they always have like a national game.
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: I think there was a year that it was like
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: a Monday night game. I think in 01. Because I
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: think the first Gillette Stadium game was 02, if I'm
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: not mistaken.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Right, Fred?
- 1:22:02Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: I think the Patriots hosted the Steelers in a Monday
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: night game.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: Coming off their, you know, that was their first ever
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: banner raising.
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: But it wasn't the season opener.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: Maybe that's not, but they won that game anyway.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: I'm just wondering.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: They didn't have Thursday NBC games back then.
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: Well, yeah, they had, the kickoff game didn't start until like,
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: I want to say like the Patriots, maybe the Patriots-Oakland game?
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: Was like a Thursday, or no, the Colts. I think
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: they beat the Colts in 0-4.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, missed field goal.
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: Yeah, banner jack missed a field goal.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Lickered up kicker. Well, there you go, guys. All right.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: Thank you, co-pilot.
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: Can make it five.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: Riley has been holding on since before Brable. Hey, Riley,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: what's up?
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: Hey, guys.
- 1:22:48Speaker 13: Thanks for taking my call. First time, long time. I
- 1:22:51Speaker 13: just have a couple questions. I wanted to ask you guys,
- 1:22:55Speaker 13: what do you think Christian Barmer has to do this
- 1:22:57Speaker 13: season to not become a cap casualty with his $ 20
- 1:23:01Speaker 13: million hit? Paying AJ Brown next season? He was top
- 1:23:06Speaker 13: five last season as a D-tackle and getting pressures against
- 1:23:11Speaker 13: double teams, and I'm very high on him. And I
- 1:23:14Speaker 13: just want to ask you if you guys could rank
- 1:23:16Speaker 13: the defensive tackle duos that you think are better than
- 1:23:20Speaker 13: him and Milton, and I'll take it off there.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Thank you. That's a big one.
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: All right, thanks. I'll start with the Barmore thing.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: I mean, Seattle is better.
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: I just think the defense needs him, and I understand
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: why he's had to be managed a little bit.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: It's been good this summer.
- 1:23:36Speaker 10: But they just don't have a lot of young talent
- 1:23:39Speaker 10: on the defense. The guys that they have are getting
- 1:23:41Speaker 10: a little bit older. Gonzalez is certainly a good piece.
- 1:23:43Speaker 10: Woodson is a good piece. So I'm kind of torn
- 1:23:46Speaker 10: because Barmore, I feel like, is one of those really
- 1:23:48Speaker 10: good young players that they have, and they've had to
- 1:23:50Speaker 10: manage him a little bit. But ultimately, I think his
- 1:23:52Speaker 10: talent wins me over. I think they probably would like
- 1:23:55Speaker 10: to redo the deal maybe and try to... I just
- 1:23:57Speaker 10: don't think the deal is all that, I mean, restrictive.
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: I mean, if.
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: So Mike and I were doing some research this week,
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: you know, just talking about the lack of depth. That's
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: the buzzword from Vrabel after that Philadelphia game. So how
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: do you get in this spot?
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Well, this is good.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: The drafts from 2024 and earlier. OK, so I'm not
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: counting 25 and I'm not counting 26 because most teams
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: have most of those draft picks still on their rosters. First,
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: you know, rookies and second-year players for the most part
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: are on the league. So, starting with the 2024 draft
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: and moving backward, the Patriots only have eight guys on
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: the roster.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Eight.
- 1:24:38Speaker 5: Micah Wenu, Christian Barmore, Ramondre Stevenson, Marcus Jones, Christian Gonzalez,
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: Bryce Barringer, Demario Douglas, and Drake May. So, one of
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: the things that I was pushing back on my show yesterday, Fred,
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: with Felger and Maz, they were like, you know, they
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: don't re-sign anybody. I go, well.
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: The problem is they haven't drafted well enough to re-sign
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: guys to big-money second-time deals when they have Mike Uenu extended,
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: Christian Barmore extended, Ramondre Stevenson extended, Marcus Jones extended. Unfortunately,
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: the rest of them weren't really worth extending. And now
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: we're at Gonzalez. So if they don't extend Gonzalez, that's
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: a valid criticism.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: But.
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: This is how you get in these situations.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: Barmore is $ 20 million if he's what you think he is.
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: I don't think that's too cumbersome.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: So let's reword that. What does he have to do
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: to make him worth $ 20 million?
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: Well, what does he have to do to get cut?
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: First of all, he's not going to be a cap casualty.
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: It's going to be they don't want to pay him.
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: And I would say the off-field stuff. Because when he
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: plays and his mind's right, I think Alex is right.
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: Who are you going to replace him with? Who's better
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: than that?
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: That you're just going to pick up.
- 1:25:56Speaker 9: The pressure keeps getting higher and higher.
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: And to Barmore's credit, I think the off-the-field immaturity has
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: gotten a lot better.
- 1:26:05Speaker 9: I think Brable's seem to... Get them on straight.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Hopefully.
- 1:26:09Speaker 10: But, Paul, do the thing of the other teams, though.
- 1:26:11Speaker 10: I think that's what's interesting. That's the context of it.
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: So I was kind of thinking, Fred, you know how
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: sometimes we argue with each other before we actually have
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: the argument?
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Because you're in my head so much. So I immediately
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: thought that when I do this, when I say, like,
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: and I'm trying to make a point that this is
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: because they've drafted so poorly that Fred's going to say, well,
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: what do other teams have?
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: You know? So same parameters.
- 1:26:34Speaker 18: Yes.
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: From the 2024 draft and earlier, and by the way,
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: the Patriots don't have anybody on their roster who was
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: drafted before 2020 by the Patriots. Buffalo has 21 players. Baltimore, 19. Houston, 14.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: Jacksonville, 16. Denver, 16. Kansas City, 16. Philadelphia, 19.
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: Detroit, 15.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Rams, 19.
- 1:26:52Speaker 5: Seattle, 14.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: All pretty good teams.
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: I picked a cross-section of good teams. I don't really care.
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: Cleveland might have 30, but that's not apples to apples.
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: I'm talking about playoff teams with good rosters. I thought
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: the one that really stood out to me was the Rams,
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: who have no draft picks. They traded them all. These
- 1:27:18Speaker 5: are very few first-round picks, and they still had 19
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: guys drafted from 2024 and earlier. So this is like...
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: Everybody says, well, how do the Rams do this? How
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: do they afford to pay? They bring back Aaron Donald.
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: They add Miles Garrett. How can they afford all these
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: Trent McDuffie contracts? Because they have 19 guys that were
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: drafted from 2024 and earlier that are the meat of
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: the team.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: The middle class.
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: Like the Kyron Williams and the Blake Cornums of the
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: world were drafted. And the guys on defense, there's a
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: lot of them.
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: Yeah, just to piggyback on that and the Patriots situation. So,
- 1:28:01Speaker 10: you know, right now, 22 out of the 53 are
- 1:28:03Speaker 10: new players for this year. So, you know, pretty close
- 1:28:07Speaker 10: to half the roster. I had them at five new
- 1:28:09Speaker 10: starters just to simplify it. You know, the guys that
- 1:28:12Speaker 10: are going to play a bunch, but. you know, you
- 1:28:14Speaker 10: look at all these guys that they've picked up here,
- 1:28:17Speaker 10: you know, and including the draft picks, like they got
- 1:28:19Speaker 10: to start hitting on guys like Will Campbell has to
- 1:28:21Speaker 10: be the answer. Like Jared Wilson has to be the answer, right?
- 1:28:24Speaker 10: Because as much as I like Mike Frabel and think
- 1:28:26Speaker 10: he's a really good coach, it's going to start to
- 1:28:28Speaker 10: run out like these, you know, these guys are getting older.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: You're not going to have Kevin Byard, you know, those
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: kinds of things.
- 1:28:33Speaker 10: So I just would say, I hope that there is
- 1:28:36Speaker 10: a gem in some of these guys that have suddenly
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: arrived here that we didn't even see in camp, that
- 1:28:42Speaker 10: they have to find some gems. They have to find
- 1:28:44Speaker 10: this middle class because they've only got so much time
- 1:28:48Speaker 10: to catch up, start hitting on these drafts.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: It's so important.
- 1:28:50Speaker 9: You know what I was thinking about is just kind
- 1:28:52Speaker 9: of touching on this.
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: It's less to do with drafting, but like the gems
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: they did find and bring in, like the Kyrus Tonga's.
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: Do you think that they thought they were going to
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: be in the position they're in now with depth on
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: defense to have not side Tonga over? What did it
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: come down to? Reportedly like a couple hundred grand. Chase on,
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: leaves in free agency. I don't think his contract blew
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: me away that he got.
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: No, they gave Jones more.
- 1:29:15Speaker 9: What if you keep those guys around, then what does
- 1:29:18Speaker 9: this defense look like? I don't know.
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: And that, I think, Alex, is another thing that Mike
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: and I spend too much time together in general.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: Doing projects.
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: You know, because you're in the bullpen, but you've been
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: busy all summer with your various endeavors. So you haven't
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: really been.
- 1:29:33Speaker 9: Top secret projects.
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: You haven't been inundated with the Mike and Paul nonsense.
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: But this is another one.
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: I just.
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: and I mentioned this, I think on, on a Tuesday
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: show and I didn't have my charts with me, but
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: just guys that signed like one year deals, one or
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: two year deals, you know, last year they were wildly
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: successful at this. Um, you know, they, they signed Matt Collins,
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: Josh Dobbs, Kairis Tonga, Caleb on Jason, Garrett Bradbury. Um,
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: they acquired Jack Gibbons and stuff. Um, and those were
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: all one or two year deals. And there were two
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: other guys, Wes Schweitzer and, um, um, Marcus Epps. I
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: almost called him Omar Epps. Marcus Epps. So those were
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: two guys that didn't make the team. They got contributions
- 1:30:15Speaker 5: from the rest of them.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they did.
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: Your backup quarterback was one of them. But, you know, Hollins, Bradbury, Gibbons, Tonga, Chason,
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: those guys were good values. So this year, they signed
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: Kevin Byard, KJ Britt, Mike Brown, Kendall Vildor, James Hudson,
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: and Jesse Lucchetta to one or two-year deals.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Yeah, one on the roster, three on the practice squad.
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: Kevin Byard's a captain.
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: Legit.
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: Everybody's happy about that.
- 1:30:40Speaker 9: Legit.
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: The rest are basically practice squad guys. Now, I think
- 1:30:45Speaker 5: Vildor will probably end up being elevated on Wednesday. I'd
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: be surprised if that's not the case. The rest of
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: these guys that they signed, you know, KJ Britt, maybe
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: he's activated. Vildor Brown, they're on the practice squad. Maybe
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: they're active. I don't know, but like, it doesn't look
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: like week one.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: A lot of, a lot of time to still change,
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: but I think they did a better job. They decided
- 1:31:10Speaker 5: we're going to take Draymond Jones instead of Caleb on
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: chasing to Alex's point. Why not both?
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: Why not both?
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: Why not both? Neither one of them blew it out
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: of the water in terms of finances.
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: I'm like, we anticipated that he was going to get
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: paid and it was like another one year deal for him.
- 1:31:24Speaker 9: Like, Another, I don't know what the money looked like.
- 1:31:27Speaker 9: I forget off the top of my head.
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: He got less than Draymond Jones did.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: I think it was 1-9.
- 1:31:31Speaker 9: Yeah, and just in hindsight, I don't know.
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: I think they knocked out free agency and the draft.
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: On paper, you got one year for $ 12 million. I
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: don't know what the guarantee was. Draymond Jones got three
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: years at $ 36.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: 5 million.
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: So, like, it's... It's comparable. Like you could have had
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: them both.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:51Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: It's that time of the week. And for those of
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: you on hold, thanks for calling. But we got to
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: hurry because it's a full slate of games. No buys
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: in week one. The debut of the 2026.
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: I did preview this, but just to remind everybody, Alex,
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: by far the best-looking member of our cast, 174, 97,
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: and 1. She won it all last year. Fred, 173, 98,
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: and 1. I was next at 167, 104, and 1.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: Mike was 163, 108, and 1. I don't know why
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: you allow Evan to push you around. Evan, 161, 110,
- 1:32:34Speaker 5: and 1.
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: I forgot I was second or last.
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: So with the spread.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: This is where I.
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: Fred, 143-125-4. Paul, 141-127-4.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: Evan, 135-133-4.
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: Alex, 132-136-4.
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: And this is just amazing to me.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: So you heard that.
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: 132 for Alex in fourth place. Mike, guess how many
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: games Mike won.
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: 119. 114. 154-4.
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: Do you know how the spread works?
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: No.
- 1:32:48Speaker 10: No.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: Because I'm the one that's not supposed to know that.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: Because the home team gets three, right?
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Maybe I confused you.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: I think that's definitely the case.
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: So that was last year. Every year is a new year.
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: Correct.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: We begin the pitch journey today, as Mike Vrabel would say.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: It's critical.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: Each of our journey is different. Your journey is not
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: going to be my journey. My journey is hopefully out
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: of the basement. That's all.
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: Hopefully.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Hopefully your journey is not my journey.
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: Can you just be less than Mike?
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: 40 games under 500.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: We're going to skip over Wednesday night, and we're going
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: to go to Thursday night.
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: He even makes Alex print out that.
- 1:33:48Speaker 9: I love the printout.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: This is an odd game because it is the San
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers against the Rams, but it's being played in
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in East Melbourne, Victoria
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: in Australia. Sounds beautiful. So what do you.
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: Think of the Rams' decision to go in 24 hours
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: ahead of the game?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: I think it's a bad decision. Why? Just jet lag
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: and all that crap. The other team was there for
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: a week. Yeah. I think that's a better way to
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: do it for Australia. It's a lot of fosters, though.
- 1:34:30Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: I think there's a lot of studies done on that.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: It's either you've got to go right at, like, no
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: break or a long break, right?
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: No one's studied Australia because it's the first time.
- 1:34:39Speaker 9: And it's a totally different hemisphere.
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: It's far.
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: Far, far away.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: The water goes here.
- 1:34:46Speaker 9: How many studies have been done on.
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: You know, playing like that?
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: Our buddy Hardy said, like, so when the quarterback throws
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: the ball, does it spin the other way?
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: All right. We've got to hurry. What's the spread?
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: Rams by three and a half.
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Rams by three and a half.
- 1:35:05Speaker 10: Um, I'm going to go, I'm going to go with
- 1:35:06Speaker 10: the Rams. Look, there's a lot of hype on them. Uh,
- 1:35:09Speaker 10: and I think at least in week one, they should
- 1:35:11Speaker 10: live up to those expectations.
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: I like the Rams to win. I feel like kind
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: of like Evan said, it's like an on paper super team.
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: I wonder how like inflated they're getting this new detail.
- 1:35:25Speaker 9: I just received that. They're only going in the day before.
- 1:35:27Speaker 9: I don't know. I could see the Niners winning this
- 1:35:30Speaker 9: game at the very least. I think they cover.
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: I am with Alex. I like the Rams because I
- 1:35:38Speaker 5: think they're better, but Mike?
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: The 49ers own the Rams.
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: NFC West, the Niners own the Rams.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: Not today.
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: I will take the Rams to win the game, but
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: I will take the Niners to cover.
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: What about in a different hemisphere?
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: That's why I'm going to take the Rams to win
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: the game and the Niners to cover.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: I'm going to split the baby. I'll have the Rams winning,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: but I'll have San Francisco covering in this game.
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: Much like Alex and Paul. Right away, you're one game behind.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: Mr.
- 1:36:05Speaker 9: Contreras.
- 1:36:05Speaker 10: Picking the darling of the NFL right now to win
- 1:36:09Speaker 10: by a field goal and a half.
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Next up, we move to Sunday. And it is Chicago
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: at Carolina, 1 o'clock. And this is on Fox.
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: The Bears by two and a half. That seems like
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: a good number.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: I like the Bears.
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: I think they're going to be a little.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: It's going to be a thrill ride this year, but
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: I'm going to go with Chicago. I'll lay the points.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: And by the way, I forgot to say the Australia
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: game is on Netflix. Netflix. Yeah.
- 1:36:40Speaker 9: Double bears.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: I'm going to take the bears too. I'm sort of
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: buying the Ben Johnson stuff. You know, I know he's
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: talked openly about wanting to be, you know, a record
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: setting offense. I think he's, I think he's been in
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: the lab as Evan likes to say, and, I think
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: he's going to get it done. I think the Bears
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: are going to have a good offense.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: What's the number again here?
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Two and a half.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to take the Bears outright. All right.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: Staying on Sunday and staying on Fox, it is the
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: Bengals by three and a half. Now, everybody pay attention.
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: This is a chance for you guys to pick up
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: a game on Fred.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: That's a good question, though. I just, you know, Joe Burrow,
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: I love him.
- 1:37:28Speaker 10: He's got the weapons trying to protect him and get
- 1:37:30Speaker 10: a defense around him.
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: I think I'm going to, Paul, tip in a little bit.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: I'm going to go with Tampa in the upset.
- 1:37:37Speaker 10: You know Cincinnati's pretty bad at the start of the
- 1:37:39Speaker 10: year too, right?
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: They are terrible historically. But you lost yourself a chance
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: to pick up a game on Fred.
- 1:37:47Speaker 9: I'm going to heed to Paul's advice. Cincinnati, Cincinnati. Cincinnati.
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: So I'm going to take Cincinnati to win. I'm going
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: to take the backdoor cover for the Bucs with that.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: I'll take the hook.
- 1:38:02Speaker 5: But everybody always talks about the Bengals. They can't protect
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Joe Burrow. Isn't the biggest problem with the Bengals, their
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: defense can't stop anybody?
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: Right?
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: When Burrow's healthy, they win. But they can't keep them healthy.
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: But really, it's the defense's problem. They stink on defense.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: They do.
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: But anyway. At one of these times, they're going to
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: have to get off to a decent start.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: So you know how when you buy a big bag
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: of Lays and you've opened it up and those first
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: chips on the top are the best and they're the
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: biggest chips. And then when you get to the end
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: of the bag, it's kind of. That is going to
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: be Baker Mayfield's season this year because he's got a
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: big chip on his shoulder right now. He feels he's disrespected.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: It's not going to last all season, but that chip
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: is really big right now, and Tampa Bay wins this game.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: I totally misread Paul's clue.
- 1:39:00Speaker 10: I thought you were going to pick against Cincinnati because
- 1:39:03Speaker 10: you hate Cincinnati, but I forgot you love Baker.
- 1:39:05Speaker 9: He also loves Baker.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: He picked against Cincinnati because it was Cincinnati. He guised
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: it very well under his Baker love.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: But, yes.
- 1:39:15Speaker 9: He's better with Baker in it.
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: He will pick against Cincinnati 17 times. Mark it down.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: Until the end when, if Paul's close, then I might
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: have to take it seriously. Yeah. But Tampa Bay.
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: I like how he dismisses you, too, if Paul was close.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: Why? What have I ever done? Nothing.
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: Alex is the one who won the pitch contest last year.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: By the way, we should play a little game. I'd
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: like to play. Anybody? Okay, we know that. Anybody know
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: the name of the Bengals' stadium?
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: No.
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: The Jungle.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: No.
- 1:39:53Speaker 5: Paycor.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Paycor.
- 1:39:54Speaker 5: Paycor.
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: Paycor.
- 1:39:56Speaker 9: Not to be confused with K-Com.
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Sunday at 1, it's the Saints at the Lions. Oh, sorry.
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: Saints at the Lions, Detroit by 7.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: Big spread. Who are the Saints this year? Yeah, Tyler Shuck.
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: I think they're all aboard on the Tyler Shuck train.
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: Sounds way too close to suck.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: I'm going to go Detroit at home. Good team.
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll lay the points.
- 1:40:29Speaker 9: I don't like it, but I'll also lay the points. Detroit, Detroit.
- 1:40:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel the same. That's a lot of points
- 1:40:35Speaker 5: on opening week, but at home, I'm going to lay
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: the points.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Detroit both ways. All right. We're still at 1
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: o'clock on Sunday. Everybody knows that the Texans play in Reliant.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: It's Buffalo at the Texans.
- 1:40:56Speaker 5: Buffalo by one and a half. Is that still Reliant Stadium?
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: That hasn't changed?
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Still Reliant Stadium. That's a good game, Paul.
- 1:41:02Speaker 10: I think this might be the pick of the one
- 1:41:05Speaker 10: o'clockers if I'm going to watch one while we're off
- 1:41:07Speaker 10: on that Sunday.
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: I think you're going to be rewarded. Rewarded.
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: I'm going to go with Buffalo in this one. Yeah,
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: I just think I'm a little bit scared off of C.J.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Stroud.
- 1:41:18Speaker 10: I think he's better than he was here last year,
- 1:41:20Speaker 10: but I'm going to just go off the quarterbacks, and
- 1:41:22Speaker 10: I think.
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: Josh Allen's better.
- 1:41:25Speaker 9: Kind of like Houston. There's something itching me. I don't know.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: Defense.
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: I'm going to take Buffalo, too. I know why Fred's
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: going to take Houston, because Jerry Rice now plays for
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: the Texans.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Right?
- 1:41:44Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:41:45Speaker 5: Talking about booty.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Remember him?
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: Keyshawn Booty's on the Texans now.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: That's not why I'm picking them. Are you done?
- 1:41:54Speaker 5: I took Buffalo.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: Are you done? I'm taking the Houston Texans. I like
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: their defense. I think they're going to give Josh Allen hell,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: although C.J. Stroud's an issue. I don't know what they're
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: going to do offensively. But Paul did mention, and I
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: had forgotten, honestly, they have booty. And, you know, I
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: think he helps C.J. Stroud. And I'm looking for Houston
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: because any time the Bills can lose is a good day. Yeah. So, Houston,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: let's go. We're all Texans on Sunday.
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it should be an interesting one to watch.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: We know that the Colts play at? RCA don't?
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: No. No, they play at Lucas Oil Stadium.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: Lucas Oil Stadium.
- 1:42:39Speaker 5: Are you going to quiz us on all the teams?
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: Because I will not get very many of those right.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Well, that's the point is they change so much these days.
- 1:42:45Speaker 5: Lucas Oil.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: Baltimore is at the Colts.
- 1:42:49Speaker 5: Baltimore by three and a half on the road.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: It's interesting.
- 1:42:56Speaker 10: It's hard to buy stock on Daniel Jones coming off
- 1:42:59Speaker 10: that injury right out of the gate. But new coach
- 1:43:02Speaker 10: in Baltimore, new vibes. I'm going to go with Baltimore.
- 1:43:05Speaker 10: But I'll take the points for Indianapolis at home.
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: I think it'll be close.
- 1:43:12Speaker 9: The spread one more time.
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: Baltimore by three and a half.
- 1:43:15Speaker 9: That's what we have. Yeah, that's why I had to ask.
- 1:43:18Speaker 9: I had to double check.
- 1:43:19Speaker 5: That's because we're a week and a half ahead of
- 1:43:21Speaker 5: the games.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: That's true. That's the problem with our sheet.
- 1:43:25Speaker 5: Although I figure there won't be much movement week one.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: What changed? Well, a guy tears an ACL in practice
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: can change things. That's true.
- 1:43:31Speaker 9: It might take Indianapolis to cover at home.
- 1:43:35Speaker 5: So Baltimore to win?
- 1:43:36Speaker 9: Baltimore, I guess, will win. I don't know. I don't
- 1:43:38Speaker 9: like Baltimore.
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going with the Fred Kerr special here, folks.
- 1:43:43Speaker 5: This is your upset special. I think everybody is really
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: high on Baltimore.
- 1:43:48Speaker 9: I know.
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: And I think there's still some issues there.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: I think they have talent, but I'm not sure they
- 1:43:53Speaker 5: have as much talent as they're given credit for. They've
- 1:43:56Speaker 5: got a new coach and all this. I'm going to
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: take Indianapolis to pull off an upset at home.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: Paul, we're thinking the same way. I'm going with the
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: Colts here. I think they were on a little heater
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: last year until injury bug hit them bad. Um, I'm
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: going to go with Daniel Jones. DJ. And the Colts.
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: Probably Jonathan Taylor is the big part.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 1:44:20Speaker 6: Sure.
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: He's going to shoulder the load.
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: He might have something to do with it.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: He's pretty good, too.
- 1:44:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: All right. So you get two points for this one.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: Where does Jacksonville play?
- 1:44:30Speaker 9: I'm going to start naming random tech companies.
- 1:44:32Speaker 5: Some bank. Everbank.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: Everbank is correct. Everbank.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: I didn't even know that was a bank.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: That was a thing.
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44:38Speaker 5: I was going ever clear, ever ready.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: Cleveland is at Jacksonville.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: Jacksonville by seven and a half.
- 1:44:48Speaker 10: Yeah, I think I'm going to go with Jacksonville blowing
- 1:44:51Speaker 10: doors in this one. I'll take Jacksonville at home in
- 1:44:53Speaker 10: the heat, and Deshaun Watson's going to play bad.
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: Lay the points, all seven and a half of them.
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: Seven and a half, is that right?
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: Seven and a half at home.
- 1:45:02Speaker 9: Jacksonville to win.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: It's a lot of points.
- 1:45:07Speaker 9: It's a lot of points, and it's week one.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: It's week one. Defenses are usually ahead of the offenses.
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: No Miles Garrett.
- 1:45:15Speaker 9: Jacksonville lay the points.
- 1:45:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it is a lot of points, but I am
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: going to lay them because I think Cleveland's pretty bad.
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: So I'll take Jacksonville both ways.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson's your starting quarterback?
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: He is, for now.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: Not because of him, but I will say that Cleveland
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: covers this game. You know, they have a one-week season.
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: playing hard type of thing defensively. Who knows what Trevor
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: Lawrence kind of season is going to have. I'm still
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: waiting for him to be the quarterback I thought he was. So, yeah,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: Jacksonville wins, but they don't cover. Still Sunday at one.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: A lot of Sunday at one games. Do we know
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: what stadium? It used to be Heinz Field. What's it
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: called now? Accro sure. Accro sure is correct.
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: Way more of these than you're letting on.
- 1:46:04Speaker 9: That one was recently changed.
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: Well, that's why I got stuck in my head.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: Atlanta.
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: I'm never going to get any of them.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Atlanta at Pittsburgh.
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: I used to write, Mike. I used to have to
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: write these things down by line. Pittsburgh by three and
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: a half.
- 1:46:20Speaker 4: Oh, that was wrong.
- 1:46:23Speaker 10: Saw Aaron Rodgers toasting one of his receivers pretty good
- 1:46:26Speaker 10: about running the wrong route. I just don't know what
- 1:46:28Speaker 10: to expect from Elena.
- 1:46:29Speaker 6: Did they?
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: They finally name a starting quarterback.
- 1:46:32Speaker 5: Pennix just got cleared.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: Okay. Two is starting.
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: I got to go with Pittsburgh in that one. I'll
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: lay the points.
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers has made up with his family.
- 1:46:42Speaker 9: They're talking again.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: That's such a good story.
- 1:46:44Speaker 9: I think that's a great development for him.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: Talking to your family.
- 1:46:49Speaker 5: Mike, that's such a great story.
- 1:46:50Speaker 9: He's no longer estranged. And he's married to a secret
- 1:46:54Speaker 9: wife that.
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: No one knows about.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: We really don't. What do you got?
- 1:47:01Speaker 9: Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh.
- 1:47:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to take Pittsburgh both ways, too. More
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: of an anti-Atlanta pick than anything I've seen from the Steelers.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Pittsburgh both ways. And our last Sunday at one
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: game is the Titans at home hosting the New Jersey Jets.
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: Tennessee by one and a half.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: At Nissan Stadium.
- 1:47:23Speaker 5: You didn't let me guess that one.
- 1:47:24Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: I figured you would.
- 1:47:25Speaker 5: Not sure I would have gotten that one.
- 1:47:26Speaker 6: Oh, really?
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:47:28Speaker 5: I would have gone with Adelphi Coliseum.
- 1:47:31Speaker 10: Yeah, I just can't bring myself to pick the Jets.
- 1:47:33Speaker 10: I'm not all that high on Tennessee. I mean, I
- 1:47:37Speaker 10: like some of their draft pieces, but I'll take Tennessee
- 1:47:39Speaker 10: to win this one at home.
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: Lay the one and a half-er.
- 1:47:42Speaker 9: Titans, Titans.
- 1:47:45Speaker 5: I'm going to take the Jets.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: He just does it to get me.
- 1:47:50Speaker 5: I just don't see anything in Tennessee beyond really Cam Wood.
- 1:47:55Speaker 5: What is that? He's had a Rough summer, by all accounts.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: And what are you seeing in the Jets?
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: I think the Jets have a chance to have a
- 1:48:02Speaker 5: pretty good offense.
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: They've got a lot of vets.
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: If Geno Smith can go to, like, Seattle version of
- 1:48:06Speaker 5: Geno Smith instead of the Raiders.
- 1:48:07Speaker 9: What week do they get their first interception?
- 1:48:09Speaker 5: They've got one in the preseason.
- 1:48:12Speaker 6: Still waiting. Yeah.
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the Jets, believe.
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: It or not.
- 1:48:18Speaker 5: After all of that crap, you just picked us up.
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: Thing?
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: But I didn't expect you to. That makes me mad
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: because I thought I'd... Expected more out of you, Paul.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: Believe it or not, I think the Titans are that bad.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: All right. Now we move to Sunday. 425. It's the
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: Cardinals at.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: The Chargers.
- 1:48:41Speaker 5: SoFi.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:48:43Speaker 5: Sorry. The Lack by 10.5.
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: Who owns the Lack?
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: Who owns the Lack?
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Oh, Arizona.
- 1:48:52Speaker 5: It's not a division game then, bro.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: Oh, shoot. I'm sorry.
- 1:48:54Speaker 4: I messed up the LA. The whole LA threw me off.
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: Come on.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: Forgot there are two teams there. Technically Orange County.
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 1:49:00Speaker 4: I'm going to take the Lack. That's a lot of points.
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: It's a weird kind of, you know, week one. I'm
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: going to take the points for Arizona.
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Still Jacoby Brissett, right?
- 1:49:09Speaker 9: Is Brissett still the quarterback?
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: Brissett is playing.
- 1:49:12Speaker 9: Charges, charges.
- 1:49:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm with Alex. I think it is a lot
- 1:49:16Speaker 5: of points, but I'm going to lay them because I
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: think that little of Arizona.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: Yeah, me too. I'm going to go with the Chargers.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: I just don't think the Cardinals are going to put
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: points on the board. Okay, so now we move to
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: 425 and we move to Las Vegas.
- 1:49:28Speaker 6: Oh, okay.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: Allegiant Stadium.
- 1:49:39Speaker 5: Allegiant.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: I should have gotten that one. Allegiant Stadium. Miami is
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: visiting the Raiders.
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: Raiders by three and a half.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: The Raiders.
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: This is a tough one. I just, I don't know.
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: I think Miami is probably the worst team in the league, though.
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: I think they think so, too. I'm going to take
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: Vegas to win, and I'm going to take Vegas to cover.
- 1:50:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:50:04Speaker 9: Vegas, Vegas.
- 1:50:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I wanted to see if I could
- 1:50:09Speaker 5: find a way to take the points, but just Miami
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: has just cleared the decks.
- 1:50:14Speaker 9: I don't know how they win a game. I don't
- 1:50:16Speaker 9: know if they want to.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: Win a game.
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: So I will take the Raiders both ways.
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: Me too. Let's go Raiders. 425, it's Green Bay at
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: the Vikings. Anyone know the stadium? Oh. U.S.
- 1:50:33Speaker 5: Something Bank.
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: U.S.
- 1:50:34Speaker 6: Bank. U.S.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: Bank. That's another one that was there for the Super Bowl. Minnesota. Mike,
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: I don't know if you know. Were you at that? No,
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: you didn't go to that.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: The Super Bowl?
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: No, I've only gone to one.
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: It was pretty rough.
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: So Minnesota by one and a half.
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: That one wasn't so good either.
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: No, the one in Minnesota was a loss.
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: That's another good game.
- 1:50:58Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: I usually go with Green Bay in these things. I'm
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: going to go with Green Bay.
- 1:51:02Speaker 9: I like Green Bay.
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: Who's quarterbacking for the Vikings now?
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: Kyler Murray. What would you pick?
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: Green Bay, Green Bay.
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: Green Bay, Green Bay.
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: Alex?
- 1:51:12Speaker 6: Same.
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: I will take Minnesota at home. Toss-up game, obviously, by
- 1:51:18Speaker 5: the spread. But I'll just take the home team. No
- 1:51:22Speaker 5: real feeling.
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to go with Green Bay in this one.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: Although a lot of people think that Kyler Murray is
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: going to have a good year.
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: Is he still really short? He is still really short.
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: No mid-20s growth spurt there.
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: But he does have a quarterback-friendly system that I think
- 1:51:39Speaker 5: will get something out of him. Because I do think
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: there's the abilities there. He's shown enough signs that he
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: can play.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: Kevin Moore.
- 1:51:45Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: No. Kevin O'Connell. Oh, Kevin O'Connell. Where's Kevin Moore?
- 1:51:50Speaker 18: New Orleans.
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: Oh.
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: Maybe we should do the coaches, not the stadium.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: Yes, right.
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: I can't believe I'm losing to this guy.
- 1:52:00Speaker 4: Welcome to my life.
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: All right. Yeah, I'm going to go with Green Bay
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: in that game. Sunday, 425. The last afternoon game on
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: Sunday is the Redskins at the Eagles. Their stadium's been
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: Lincoln Financial since it opened.
- 1:52:15Speaker 5: Not the Redskins anymore.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:52:17Speaker 5: Commanders. Eagles by five and a half.
- 1:52:23Speaker 10: I think this is a big year for Washington. I'm
- 1:52:25Speaker 10: curious which direction they go. But Philly's still got that
- 1:52:31Speaker 10: ground game. I'm going to go with Philly. I'm really
- 1:52:37Speaker 10: torn on the points here. I'm really torn. I don't
- 1:52:40Speaker 10: think much of Washington this year. I'm going to lay them.
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: Lay the points.
- 1:52:44Speaker 14: Philly, Philly.
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: Now, I am going to go Philly both ways, too.
- 1:52:49Speaker 5: I do think that Washington could be much better, though,
- 1:52:54Speaker 5: because I think I think the Diggs move for them
- 1:52:57Speaker 5: made sense with McLaurin.
- 1:53:01Speaker 6: Sure.
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: And I still believe in Jaden Daniels. So I think
- 1:53:04Speaker 5: with some help, they'll be improved. But I think Philly's
- 1:53:08Speaker 5: got too much talent. So I'll lay the points.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and they got that tune up with the Patriots,
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: which is going to really help them.
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: Went against a great team.
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: Iron sharpens iron.
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: That's right. So I'm going to go with the Eagles.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: All right. Now we move to Sunday night. And it
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: is the Dallas Cowboys at the New Jersey Giants. Paul
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: loves these division games on primetime.
- 1:53:33Speaker 5: You see me shaking my head already.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: Primetime.
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: Dallas by two and a half. The Super Bowl champion
- 1:53:38Speaker 5: Dallas Cowboys by two and a half.
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: Oh, boy, Jackson Dart cracks me up.
- 1:53:45Speaker 10: I mean, they definitely got a lot of talent on
- 1:53:46Speaker 10: defense there with the Giants, but I'm going to.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: Go with Dak.
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: I'm going to go with Dak on the road, and
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: I'll lay the points.
- 1:53:55Speaker 9: Cowboys, Cowboys.
- 1:53:57Speaker 5: Yeah, as much as I mock them for being celebrated,
- 1:54:01Speaker 5: this is their year. I will take Dallas to open
- 1:54:04Speaker 5: the season with a win.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: What's the number?
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: Two and a half.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the Giants outright.
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: Giants outright, just because. I hope you're right.
- 1:54:13Speaker 5: That's what I'll be rooting for when I watch.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: All right, so ESPN got a good one for Monday night.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: It's Denver at Kansas City.
- 1:54:21Speaker 5: So Kansas City is favored by three, and I will
- 1:54:23Speaker 5: say up front that Kansas City is the team that
- 1:54:25Speaker 5: I know that I have the least feel about.
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: Just after the way their season finished, and I have
- 1:54:33Speaker 5: no idea if I'm putting too much faith in Mahomes
- 1:54:36Speaker 5: or not.
- 1:54:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:54:37Speaker 5: Or not enough.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: And how much faith are you putting in Sean Payton?
- 1:54:42Speaker 5: Oh, I have a lot of faith in Sean Payton.
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: I think Denver's going to be good. I don't know
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: about Kansas City.
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I.
- 1:54:47Speaker 10: I think I just feel like Denver's more on the
- 1:54:49Speaker 10: come right now. I'm going to take Denver with the
- 1:54:52Speaker 10: upset at Arrowhead to kick off the season.
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: Okay. Lock?
- 1:54:57Speaker 9: I will.
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: Jalen?
- 1:54:59Speaker 6: No. No?
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Because it's me. There's no locks. It's me picking.
- 1:55:03Speaker 9: I will give Kansas City the benefit of the doubt
- 1:55:05Speaker 9: for one week. Probably one week only.
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: Yep. Okay. Fair enough.
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: I think Denver's better right now. I think Denver's got
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: a really good roster. I'm going to take Denver, too.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: Waddle.
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that was a good addition for them.
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: Listen, anyone who's picking Denver, absolutely, I can see that.
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: I'm with Alex. I'm going to give KC the benefit
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: of the doubt for this week, see how Mahomes looks,
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: see how the team looks as a whole, and I'll
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: stick with them for a week. They're not playing at Denver?
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: No.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: Well, they made this concession because they are in primetime still.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: And it's early. I see. When the games count, they
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: switch them all to Denver.
- 1:55:52Speaker 5: They switch them all?
- 1:55:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: I like it. All right. Now we move back to
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: Wednesday night. Yeah, Paul, we haven't done the Patriots yet.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: I forgot. Yeah. It's New England at Seattle. Name of
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: the field?
- 1:56:05Speaker 9: Lumen?
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: Lumen is correct.
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: Welcome to Lumen.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: Welcome to Lumen.
- 1:56:10Speaker 5: Isn't that a thing?
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: Severance?
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:56:12Speaker 6: Right?
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:56:14Speaker 5: Nailed it. Never saw it.
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: Great, great show.
- 1:56:16Speaker 9: Has nothing to do with football either.
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: Great show.
- 1:56:20Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: What's the number?
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: Seattle by three and a half.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Three and a half. All right.
- 1:56:24Speaker 10: I can't start off the year picking against the Patriots.
- 1:56:26Speaker 10: I think it's a tough, it's a really tough challenge
- 1:56:28Speaker 10: for this Patriots team.
- 1:56:29Speaker 5: I did last year.
- 1:56:29Speaker 4: It worked out really well for me.
- 1:56:31Speaker 5: You picked the Raiders in the opener last year?
- 1:56:33Speaker 6: I did.
- 1:56:33Speaker 5: You don't remember this? No wonder why you won the
- 1:56:35Speaker 5: picks contest.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: She's fearless.
- 1:56:37Speaker 5: What do the Sharks know?
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: I got to find out and get what they got.
- 1:56:41Speaker 4: I'm going to take the Patriots. I'm going to say 26-24.
- 1:56:46Speaker 10: You know, I just think they need to get off
- 1:56:47Speaker 10: to a really good start and just stay in the game. Stay,
- 1:56:50Speaker 10: you know, controlling the game. Don't fall behind. And then
- 1:56:54Speaker 10: it just opens up everything that Seattle does really well.
- 1:56:56Speaker 10: So good start. Don't beat yourself. And be solid on
- 1:57:00Speaker 10: special teams. You know, get contributions from some new guys,
- 1:57:03Speaker 10: some new faces that we maybe haven't even seen in
- 1:57:05Speaker 10: a Patriots uniform yet.
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: I think that would be a good formula.
- 1:57:08Speaker 10: But I think it's a huge, huge challenge, and it's
- 1:57:10Speaker 10: not hard to see Seattle just not blowing them out
- 1:57:13Speaker 10: but rolling like they did in the Super Bowl.
- 1:57:18Speaker 9: 24-17, I'm going to be a company gal, New England.
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: So I guess I have to be the jerk, the
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: only one. I think Seattle is significantly better. I think
- 1:57:32Speaker 5: the Patriots have improved in some areas. specifically offensively, which
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: was the biggest problem in the Super Bowl. I don't
- 1:57:40Speaker 5: think this will be easy because I think these are
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: weird games to play for the defending champs sometimes, and
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: I think there's a feeling out process. I think Seattle wins.
- 1:57:48Speaker 5: I think the Patriots will have every opportunity to win.
- 1:57:50Speaker 5: I'm going to go 27-23 New England.
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:57:55Speaker 5: I mean, I'm sorry. Seattle. You stunned me for a second.
- 1:57:58Speaker 5: 27-23 Seattle. But I absolutely can see the Patriots coming
- 1:58:03Speaker 5: back with a win.
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: I can too, but they're not going to. Wow. But
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: they do.
- 1:58:10Speaker 6: Cover.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Seattle wins 24-21. So it's a nail-biter.
- 1:58:16Speaker 9: Heartbreaker.
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: And a heartbreaker. But It gives you momentum. Like, okay,
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: we were toe-to-toe with the World Champs.
- 1:58:23Speaker 9: Backdoor cover or they're going neck and neck?
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: No, no, neck and neck.
- 1:58:26Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: We were right there with the World Champs. Let's get
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: out week two. And they may not lose another game
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: after this week. Okay.
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: I like the sound of that.
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: So that's it.
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: That's our first week of picks. We actually made it
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: with two minutes to spare. That's amazing. You kept us
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: on time, Fred. I did.
- 1:58:45Speaker 5: You did a good job of moving it along.
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: Yeah. We'll get Evan's picks later.
- 1:58:50Speaker 6: I will.
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: I will. Okay.
- 1:58:51Speaker 4: I'll audit that and make sure there's nothing wrong.
- 1:58:53Speaker 5: After practice, yes. We'll have Ernst and Young, otherwise known
- 1:58:56Speaker 5: as Deuce and Alex, making sure that everything's on the
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: up and up.
- 1:58:59Speaker 9: Well, that's what Evan blames it on when he doesn't win.
- 1:59:01Speaker 10: Because he doesn't get to hear our expert analysis before
- 1:59:05Speaker 10: we make our picks.
- 1:59:06Speaker 9: Would he have listened to it?
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: He's just flying blind.
- 1:59:08Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: So next week. We have shows on Tuesday. We have
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: a show on Wednesday, although Evan and I won't be
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: on it.
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: No.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry. Wednesday's game day. We have a show
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: on Tuesday. We have pre- and post-game show on Wednesday,
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: and then we have a show on Thursday.
- 1:59:24Speaker 5: Mike and I will reprise the post-game show.
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: And Alex will jump in, give us her thoughts.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:59:29Speaker 10: We've got to think of what. PP the Deuce and
- 1:59:32Speaker 10: Frank or Francis.
- 1:59:33Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: You need a toilet reference. Yeah.
- 1:59:38Speaker 9: I don't know if I want to find one.
- 1:59:39Speaker 5: Beauty and the Beast.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Everybody have a good weekend. Am I forgetting anything
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: that I should be telling people about?
- 1:59:45Speaker 10: No, there'll be practice all weekend, though, so keep an
- 1:59:47Speaker 10: eye out for injury reports starting Saturday.
- 1:59:50Speaker 4: Get a sense of e-memory and all that stuff.
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: Get your Seattle voodoo dolls out.
- 1:59:54Speaker 9: Etsy, buy your Etsy witch now.
- 1:59:57Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: And I can't wait. Stay night. And we're off.
- 2:00:02Speaker 5: I feel like we've been talking about this game for
- 2:00:03Speaker 5: a long time. Thanks for watching.
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
- 2:00:10Speaker 10: If you really want to help us, make sure you
- 2:00:12Speaker 10: like us wherever you get your podcasts, like Apple Podcasts
- 2:00:14Speaker 10: or Spotify.
- 2:00:15Speaker 4: Also, make sure you follow us on.
- 2:00:16Speaker 10: The New England Patriots YouTube channel to see this show
- 2:00:19Speaker 10: and everything else that we do here at the Patriots.
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: Thanks a lot.
