- 0:02Speaker 1: Back back back music's lost history Hey, welcome back to
- 0:22Speaker 1: Music's Lost History, the Artist Edition. Without a doubt, this
- 0:26Speaker 1: has got to be one of the most unusual stories
- 0:28Speaker 1: out of the 1990s. This is what happens when no
- 0:32Speaker 1: one in the band set out to be part of
- 0:34Speaker 1: a very successful group. Their breakthrough actually happened very accidentally.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And it's when stuff like this happens that you got
- 0:41Speaker 1: to figure out how to survive the enormous success that follows.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The story starts with some dude by the name of
- 0:48Speaker 1: Ed from Stockbridge, Georgia. His dream is to be a songwriter.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The dude was paying his dues and oh yeah, lots
- 0:57Speaker 1: of rejections. It didn't stop him though from recording in 1992.
- 1:02Speaker 1: There were some songs he had. He just wanted some
- 1:04Speaker 1: demos so he could put them out there so he
- 1:06Speaker 1: could raise the game when it comes to his publishing deals.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Did you hear that? He was trying to get it published.
- 1:13Speaker 1: He wasn't saying anything about forming a band that may
- 1:16Speaker 1: or may not go global. Aero Collins Music's Lost History
- 1:19Speaker 1: Name the artist before we do Here's It couldn't have
- 1:33Speaker 1: happened without this very shiny tune. But, but, but, but,
- 1:37Speaker 1: who gets the credit for giving this Ed guy a
- 1:41Speaker 1: break as a song performer? Aero Collins! Music's lost history!
- 1:50Speaker 1: Name the song before we do! Hey, thanks for coming
- 1:59Speaker 1: back to Music's Lost History, the Artist Edition. So what
- 2:02Speaker 1: we've got here is a songwriter with absolutely no aspirations
- 2:05Speaker 1: to be part of some sort of band. But for
- 2:08Speaker 1: the hell of it, he walks into a studio one
- 2:11Speaker 1: day to record his songs just so he can just
- 2:13Speaker 1: raise the game of his publishing jobs. That all changed, though,
- 2:17Speaker 1: when a college radio station by the name of WRAS
- 2:21Speaker 1: in Atlanta, Georgia, decided to add their song Shine to
- 2:25Speaker 1: the airwaves. Whoa, wait a second. Now Orlando, Florida is
- 2:29Speaker 1: jumping on board? This Ed dude, he was quoted to say, people,
- 2:34Speaker 1: they're interested in the song, but more importantly, they want
- 2:37Speaker 1: to see the people who actually made the music. Well,
- 2:40Speaker 1: that tune went on to number one on Billboard's charts.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The album peaked at number 15. Music critics believe that
- 2:45Speaker 1: this proves how radio... has been chasing something that's always
- 2:50Speaker 1: been there organically. Uh, that's what I expect from college radio.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I mean, they were the broadcasters who had the courage
- 2:58Speaker 1: and the confidence and no connection to corporate radio pigs
- 3:02Speaker 1: to play the new type of music called alternative. It
- 3:08Speaker 1: proved to be the birthing ground of the group collective soul.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm arrow and that's music's lost history.
