- 0:29This is Haley Recker with the Becker's Payer
- 0:31Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:33Becker's third annual spring payer issues roundtable.
- 0:36Today, I am thrilled to be joined by
- 0:37Sean Schumann, director of medical management at PEAK
- 0:40Health. Thank you so much for joining me
- 0:42today. Can you go ahead and get us
- 0:43started by telling us a little bit about
- 0:45yourself, your background, and your organization?
- 0:47Absolutely. Good afternoon, and thank you for having
- 0:50me on today's podcast.
- 0:51I appreciate being here. I am from PEAK
- 0:54Health. PEAK Health is a provider payer. We
- 0:57started in operations three years ago,
- 0:59and we service the market of West Virginia,
- 1:02and surrounding communities.
- 1:04Well, thank you so much for that introduction,
- 1:06and I'd like to get our conversation started
- 1:08by talking about the ever evolving regulatory landscape.
- 1:13So what best practices or tools does your
- 1:15organization rely on to keep quality of care
- 1:17at the forefront?
- 1:19At Peak Health,
- 1:21our whole goal is to improve the health
- 1:23outcomes and the health trajectory of the residents
- 1:25that live within the state of West Virginia,
- 1:27and our whole goal is really to work
- 1:30towards
- 1:31improving the lives of the people that we
- 1:33serve. We do that through a variety of
- 1:34ways. Internally, we look at what utilization looks
- 1:38like. Is it standard? Is there anything that's
- 1:40outliers?
- 1:41We also look at quality of care. We
- 1:43do chart audits on our team to make
- 1:45sure that we're providing the best service possible.
- 1:47And then also, we are working with our
- 1:49providers, making sure that our members have access
- 1:52to the highest quality of care possible. And
- 1:54then also, we look with our fraud, waste,
- 1:57and abuse team, working with compliance,
- 1:59etcetera, making sure that we are providing the
- 2:01highest level of service and quality to the
- 2:02members that we serve.
- 2:04So going off of that a little bit,
- 2:06I wanna talk more about member satisfaction,
- 2:09which would probably most likely have to do
- 2:11with the quality of care at the forefront.
- 2:14So what experience or engagement strategies have proven
- 2:18effective for your organization, and how are you
- 2:20measuring that success?
- 2:21Sure.
- 2:22At Peak Health, member satisfaction is the highest
- 2:24priority.
- 2:25We see that as our differentiator.
- 2:28We know that health care is hard, and
- 2:30we know that there's a lot of barriers
- 2:32to accessing health care. Our goal at peak
- 2:35health is how do we remove those barriers?
- 2:37So we work with our members,
- 2:39around care management,
- 2:41and we access we help them access care,
- 2:43and we help them get in a more
- 2:45streamlined fashion. So making sure that we connect
- 2:46them with the community resources that are available
- 2:48and then how we can make sure that
- 2:50they get the appointments and the services they
- 2:52need in order to live their best life.
- 2:54And we have a great team of folks
- 2:56that have assembled around care management, utilization management,
- 2:59and quality that really wrap around a member
- 3:02to provide the highest level of services.
- 3:04Well, that's amazing to hear. And I can
- 3:06imagine that reducing costs and improving quality
- 3:10and advancing health equity have a lot to
- 3:12do with that member satisfaction.
- 3:14So how do you approach aligning these priorities
- 3:16in your organization's strategic vision?
- 3:19Thank you for that. We do,
- 3:22look at ways to
- 3:24increase quality, decrease cost overall. And as an
- 3:27organization, we do that
- 3:29by a variety of ways.
- 3:30One of those ways is upon enrollment before
- 3:33people enroll in our plan. Have they had
- 3:35any interaction with our health system partners?
- 3:38And how do we work to get them
- 3:40enrolled into care management programs? Those folks that
- 3:42are unwilling to go into care management programs
- 3:44that are high utilizers,
- 3:46we put them in a program we call
- 3:47PEAK CARES.
- 3:48And PEAK CARES is sort of a comprehensive
- 3:51care management program that wraps around a member.
- 3:53They have one care manager, one number to
- 3:55call, and then that care manager navigates
- 3:58for the member on the member's behalf
- 4:01to the health care ecosystem.
- 4:03And we work with that member, and we've
- 4:04been having positive results around that. But it
- 4:07allows us the ability to not only
- 4:09address the,
- 4:11health,
- 4:12inequity,
- 4:13of individuals that live in the Appalachia region,
- 4:16as well as in West Virginia,
- 4:18and it allows us to make sure they're
- 4:19connected to the care and services that they
- 4:21need. Absolutely.
- 4:23Now for my final question today, looking ahead,
- 4:25what do you see as the biggest opportunity
- 4:27for payers to lead the charge in transforming
- 4:29care delivery and driving better outcomes for all
- 4:32stakeholders? And how can leaders take a step
- 4:34in this direction now?
- 4:35Sure. Absolutely. I think the biggest opportunity for
- 4:38payers is to have line of sight into
- 4:40the member experience, member satisfaction. I think if
- 4:43you get that right, everything else will fall
- 4:45on the line.
- 4:46And I think, from a health plan care
- 4:49perspective and a vision perspective, I think leaders
- 4:52need to take bold steps in addressing
- 4:55how and what their members are experiencing from
- 4:58health plan operations to
- 5:00provider
- 5:01that are available in the network, how members
- 5:04navigate the system. And if the health plan
- 5:06plays a central role, which we are trying
- 5:08to do at Peak Health,
- 5:09that's what would be a winning strategy in
- 5:12order to approve the health trajectory of the
- 5:14members that we serve.
- 5:16Well, I've really enjoyed our conversation today. Again,
- 5:18this is Haley Recker with the Becker's Payer
- 5:20Podcast,
- 5:21recorded live at the Becker's third annual spring
- 5:23payer issues roundtable. Thank you so much, Sean,
- 5:25for joining me today. Thank you for having
- 5:27me. Of course.
