- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Friday June 26, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where Australians are being urged to think carefully before travelling to the Middle East, as tensions over Iran push the region closer to a wider conflict. The advice is especially sharp for people in Israel and Lebanon, with officials warning conditions can change fast and flights can be disrupted without notice. For many families here, it is another reminder of how quickly overseas unrest can reach home. — — [serious] In Melbourne ... the cost of living pressure is still front and centre, after the federal government’s fuel excise relief runs until the end of the month. That matters at the bowser and in the household budget, with drivers watching closely for any jump in prices if the measure is not extended. It comes as Australians keep looking for signs of easing pressure, not more. — — [curious] In Canberra, the government’s legal fight with 3M is growing into a major corporate and environmental case. Canberra is seeking A$2 billion, alleging the company made false claims about the long-term impact of firefighting foam linked to PFAS contamination at Defence sites. It is a big test of accountability ... and a story with long-running health and cleanup consequences. — — [serious] We move to South Australia, where the abortion debate is back in the spotlight after a late-term bill narrowly passed the upper house but was then defeated heavily in the lower house. The sharp split shows how sensitive the issue remains, and how little room there is for compromise on questions of women’s health and reproductive rights. — — [urgent] Overseas in Venezuela, rescuers are racing against time after two powerful earthquakes near the capital left more than 160 people dead and caused widespread destruction. Officials have declared an emergency as crews search collapsed buildings for survivors. The scale of the damage is still becoming clear ... and the death toll is expected to rise. — — [urgent] Meanwhile in the United States ... the White House is asking Congress for nearly 88 billion dollars in extra funding, much of it tied to the war in Iran. At the same time, Washington is trying to manage rising pressure at home and abroad, with the conflict driving up global uncertainty and putting more strain on energy, security and diplomacy. — — [warm] That's NewsCard Daily.
