Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go to Malcolm Nance, intelligence foreign policy analyst, former
- 0:03Speaker 1: United States Navy senior chief with us this morning. Malcolm,
- 0:06Speaker 1: good morning, this is the big meeting is under is
- 0:10Speaker 1: almost underway. I should say, we have the president arriving
- 0:13Speaker 1: in Beijing. Who has the upper hand here? Do you
- 0:16Speaker 1: think of these talks?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Well, unfortunately, China is playing the adominent room now. Donald
- 0:24Speaker 2: Trump has shown that he cannot maintain a stable foreign
- 0:26Speaker 2: policy or a policy platform that would allow the United
- 0:32Speaker 2: States to take advantage of whatever little leverage that they've
- 0:36Speaker 2: gotten out of the Iran War. And Trump is confronted
- 0:39Speaker 2: with having to do one of two things today or
- 0:42Speaker 2: during his visit. One beg China for assistance in using
- 0:47Speaker 2: maybe even their naval forces to come and help work
- 0:51Speaker 2: with the Iranians to open the Straight of Hornless. And
- 0:55Speaker 2: there are other things that the United States needs that
- 0:58Speaker 2: China is now protectionist in you rein nitrate. China will
- 1:02Speaker 2: not allow any fertilizers to be shipped out of their
- 1:05Speaker 2: country right now, and their national oil reserves are almost
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, invoking jealousy within the United States. So we
- 1:14Speaker 2: are sort of the United States are behind the eight
- 1:16Speaker 2: ball on being able to leverage this trip. That Chinese,
- 1:21Speaker 2: on the other hand, will likely view it as an
- 1:23Speaker 2: opportunity to eat America's economic lunch.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Malcolm, what do you think he's going to say about
- 1:28Speaker 1: Taiwan if anything?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Hmm, I really fear about that because Donald Trump is
- 1:35Speaker 2: a transactional person. He does not believe in consistency of history, policy,
- 1:41Speaker 2: or continuity of what one president thinks, you know, is
- 1:46Speaker 2: right in terms of defunding democracies or our allies. Trump
- 1:51Speaker 2: views it as what he can get out of it.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Personally is a man that admires you for being a
- 1:58Speaker 2: life president. He admires Kim Jong un for being able
- 2:01Speaker 2: to do what he wants and have people, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: jump up and clap like a group of trained seals.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So with regards to Taiwan, he'll probably view it as
- 2:12Speaker 2: a financial transaction. Taiwan creates microchips for the United States
- 2:18Speaker 2: and also buys US defensive weapons. It really is up in.
- 2:23Speaker 1: The sounds like we've lost Malcolm there. That was Malcolm Nance,
- 2:26Speaker 1: intelligence foreign policy analyst and former United States Navy senior
- 2:29Speaker 1: chief With.

- 2:34Speaker 2: to news talks. It be from five am weekdays, or
