- 2:13Speaker 3: All right, so I'm going to introduce you to a
- 2:17Speaker 3: concept this morning, something called Wonder School. And you know,
- 2:22Speaker 3: we've heard, we all hear about the crisis that we
- 2:25Speaker 3: have in our daycares centers in West Virginia, really around
- 2:29Speaker 3: the country, but especially here in West Virginia. We're known
- 2:32Speaker 3: for having the lowest workforce participation rate in America, and sadly,
- 2:36Speaker 3: one of the reasons we have that. One of the
- 2:38Speaker 3: reasons is the fact that we don't have we don't
- 2:41Speaker 3: have quality childcare. People got nothing to do with the kids.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So there's some folks that are trying to work on
- 2:46Speaker 3: that situation. We want to bring in Jason Moss to
- 2:49Speaker 3: the show. Jason, Welcome to the show.
- 2:52Speaker 6: Hello, I'm glad to be here.
- 2:53Speaker 5: All right, So what.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Are we talking about this morning? Do you give us
- 2:56Speaker 3: this whole concept of what you folks are doing. We'll
- 2:58Speaker 3: get into the particulars later, but give us the overall
- 3:00Speaker 3: view of this concept of what you're trying to do.
- 3:05Speaker 6: As you just said, West Virginia has a childcare crisis.
- 3:11Speaker 6: There's sixty five percent of the state's residents are in
- 3:14Speaker 6: a childcare desert and the labor workforce participation rate US
- 3:19Speaker 6: fifty four point eight percent. That's the lowest in the country,
- 3:22Speaker 6: and it points to sort of the lack of available
- 3:26Speaker 6: childcare and affordable childcare as a reason for that crisis.
- 3:32Speaker 6: What I mean is that we've got to figure out
- 3:34Speaker 6: how to ensure that there's more available childcare so that
- 3:39Speaker 6: parents don't need to reduce their hours, they don't need
- 3:42Speaker 6: to leave the workforce, and they can they can stay
- 3:44Speaker 6: in work. And so Wonder School has been asked by
- 3:49Speaker 6: the state to come in to help to address this problem,
- 3:52Speaker 6: and one of the ways we're doing it is through
- 3:54Speaker 6: something very innovative called try Share.
- 3:58Speaker 3: All right, break break that down for try Share. I
- 4:00Speaker 3: love the titles Wonder School and try Share. I love
- 4:03Speaker 3: the titles.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Try Share is a great concept. It's it's basically saying
- 4:08Speaker 6: that the the way to make childcare more accessible is
- 4:14Speaker 6: if you share the cost three ways between uh an employer,
- 4:19Speaker 6: the state of West Virginia, and the employee and so
- 4:24Speaker 6: the and that and that's and that's the gist. It's
- 4:26Speaker 6: it's it's free for businesses. And the way that It
- 4:29Speaker 6: works as an employer would say, I am uh invested
- 4:33Speaker 6: in this particular employee, I'm going to help contribute towards
- 4:39Speaker 6: a portion of their childcare costs. Whatever amount that that
- 4:43Speaker 6: employer decides. The state is then going to match that
- 4:47Speaker 6: amount on a slide and scale, and then the employee
- 4:51Speaker 6: tastes the difference.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You know this, it's a very interesting concept. Go ahead
- 4:56Speaker 3: and continue. I'm sorry, didn't mean to cut you off.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Go ahead, no, no, no, and and and what one
- 4:59Speaker 6: and under school is sort of kind of the technology
- 5:03Speaker 6: in the background that makes it super easy for employers
- 5:06Speaker 6: to do it and make sure that the providers are
- 5:10Speaker 6: getting paid on time so that they can continue to
- 5:13Speaker 6: operate their businesses.
- 5:15Speaker 3: So how much work has gone into this and what
- 5:18Speaker 3: does it take to put together, Jason, a model like this, Well.
- 5:25Speaker 6: The model itself originated in Michigan a few years ago
- 5:31Speaker 6: and it has since also we now see it happening
- 5:34Speaker 6: in Kentucky, North Carolina, so the model is there. Our
- 5:40Speaker 6: job is to work with the Small Business Development Center
- 5:45Speaker 6: and a variety of different partners around the state, the
- 5:47Speaker 6: Chamber of Commerce, the Charleston Area Alliance, et cetera, to
- 5:50Speaker 6: figure out how do we take that model and adapt
- 5:53Speaker 6: it here to West Virginia. And so we've just started
- 5:59Speaker 6: to do this. We're just starting to put sort of
- 6:01Speaker 6: all the pieces in place, but it is, it is live,
- 6:05Speaker 6: and we are bringing on our first employers and our
- 6:08Speaker 6: first providers, and the first employees are benefiting from those
- 6:14Speaker 6: contributions and those matching funds. They're benefiting right now.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Sright to begin with with Jason Moss, Let's get back
- 6:22Speaker 3: to this term childcare deserts. As I said at the top, Jason,
- 6:27Speaker 3: you hear that term thrown out there a lot, and
- 6:29Speaker 3: I don't think you.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Know, it's easy for us.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm sitting in the studio in Charleston, West Virginia right now,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and those that are listening to us, primarily in the
- 6:37Speaker 3: Kanal Valley, we don't have enough childcare. But what we
- 6:41Speaker 3: do okay here, Okay, I mean, I'm just kind of
- 6:44Speaker 3: throwing it out there. Maybe I'm wrong, but you start
- 6:46Speaker 3: getting into some of these other areas to say, to
- 6:48Speaker 3: West Virginia, some of the smaller counties, and I'm not
- 6:51Speaker 3: you know, we're not gonna pick on any but I'm
- 6:53Speaker 3: just throwing some of the small counties out there. Maybe
- 6:55Speaker 3: a Work County or a Clay County or some of
- 6:58Speaker 3: these other counties. I'm going to go ahead and imagine
- 7:01Speaker 3: that that's kind of where you're looking at when you
- 7:03Speaker 3: talk about childcare deserts.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Yeah, that's that's that's you're you're exactly right. I mean,
- 7:10Speaker 6: the childcare desert is where the need for care far
- 7:12Speaker 6: exceeds the available providers. And and here's the here's the
- 7:17Speaker 6: challenge is that it's it's it's often a very unrealistic
- 7:23Speaker 6: solution to say we're going to build a brand new center. Uh.
- 7:28Speaker 6: In these communities, it's just the cost is too high,
- 7:32Speaker 6: the population density is there's not it's too low. But
- 7:37Speaker 6: what you can do, what's often overlooked is a very
- 7:39Speaker 6: creative solution is what's called family childcare or in home childcare.
- 7:44Speaker 6: And that's where entrepreneurial individuals say, hey, I can open
- 7:49Speaker 6: up where I live and run a childcare program in
- 7:53Speaker 6: my house. Uh. And it's all licensed, that follows the
- 7:57Speaker 6: state regulations, et cetera. But it is a much easier, way,
- 8:02Speaker 6: faster way to create childcare. It helps individuals work and
- 8:07Speaker 6: earn a great living, and it can be very targeted
- 8:10Speaker 6: to those areas where childcare is needed most and part
- 8:14Speaker 6: of what Wonder School is also doing in the state,
- 8:17Speaker 6: not only launching the Treasure program I mentioned, but we're
- 8:20Speaker 6: also sort of working locally to help to create more
- 8:25Speaker 6: in home family childcare.
- 8:27Speaker 5: It's a fascinating concept. I mean, it really is.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And when you talk about West Virginia's low workforce participation,
- 8:36Speaker 3: invariably somebody will reach out to me. I'll get a
- 8:38Speaker 3: text or something like that, and somebody will say something
- 8:40Speaker 3: to the effect of, well, we're also the oldest state
- 8:42Speaker 3: in the nation, and I completely understand that. Usually when
- 8:45Speaker 3: you're talking about low workforce participation, Jason, you're talking about
- 8:49Speaker 3: able bodied people that just for one reason or another
- 8:53Speaker 3: don't work. Childcare is an issue, whatever, that's what we're
- 8:57Speaker 3: talking about here primarily, right.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Yeah, that's that's that's exactly right. That's exactly right, and
- 9:03Speaker 6: we want and we want it for those individuals. We
- 9:07Speaker 6: want to eliminate the very painful decision to say, hey,
- 9:11Speaker 6: I would love to be working, but the economics don't
- 9:15Speaker 6: make sense for me to work or for me to
- 9:18Speaker 6: stay at my job because I have to deal with childcare.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I have to have a solution in place, and so
- 9:24Speaker 6: if through try share and creating more you know, more
- 9:28Speaker 6: in home programs, we can we can eliminate reduce that
- 9:32Speaker 6: very painful decision. That's a win for everybody. That's a
- 9:35Speaker 6: win for the parents. That's a win for those providers
- 9:42Speaker 6: because they're going to see more business. It's a win
- 9:44Speaker 6: for employers because it helps them to recruit talent, it
- 9:47Speaker 6: helps them to repain talent, and that's a win for
- 9:49Speaker 6: the state.
- 9:51Speaker 3: A quick reminderre your vaccines or your best protection to
- 9:53Speaker 3: get severe disease from fluid COVID nineteen if you're sixty
- 9:56Speaker 3: five or older, risk lass do more with this season's vaccines.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Get started vanks scenes dot gov paid for by the
- 10:01Speaker 3: US Department of Health and Human Services. All Right, I'm
- 10:03Speaker 3: gonna give you a scenario here, Jason, Okay, I am
- 10:06Speaker 3: going to start.
- 10:07Speaker 5: I have a company.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Uh and off the top of my head, we're gonna
- 10:11Speaker 3: call it Jones and Jones.
- 10:12Speaker 5: That's the name of the company. Okay. Uh. I want
- 10:15Speaker 5: to get involved in this.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I need people and I and what I'm hearing when
- 10:19Speaker 3: I interview people is I would love to take the job,
- 10:21Speaker 3: but I can't do it because childcare is an issue.
- 10:24Speaker 3: As an employer, what can take us through the process
- 10:28Speaker 3: of how that would work, because it's a multifaceted as
- 10:30Speaker 3: you said, So take us through.
- 10:32Speaker 5: I'm an employer, lay it out for us. How does
- 10:34Speaker 5: it work?
- 10:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm at Jones and Jones, And what
- 10:39Speaker 6: I'm going to do is say, all right, for for
- 10:41Speaker 6: for my employees, I'm gonna make it. I'm gonna let
- 10:45Speaker 6: every I'm gonna let them know that I'm going to
- 10:48Speaker 6: contribute one hundred dollars two hundred dollars a month towards
- 10:52Speaker 6: their towards their childcare, and the state is going to
- 10:56Speaker 6: match that based on that family's annual householding them and
- 11:01Speaker 6: therefore that individual is now going to be saving two
- 11:06Speaker 6: hundred dollars three hundred dollars four hundred dollars a month
- 11:10Speaker 6: on their childcare, which over the course of a year
- 11:12Speaker 6: is very significant. So that's the promise and the commitment
- 11:17Speaker 6: that Jones and Jones can make to employees or or
- 11:22Speaker 6: future employees people are trying to recruit operationally, it's as
- 11:27Speaker 6: simple as going to Wonder School, dot com forward slashed
- 11:31Speaker 6: West Virginia dash trishare and it is a very quick
- 11:36Speaker 6: application process. You essentially fill out a brief application. You
- 11:41Speaker 6: let us know that you want to participate. We follow
- 11:46Speaker 6: up with you. We then ask you to let us
- 11:50Speaker 6: know what employees or employees and how much you're going
- 11:53Speaker 6: to contribute for a month. We validate with them the
- 11:55Speaker 6: household income. We talk to the provider where the child
- 11:59Speaker 6: will be going, We get them signed up, and then
- 12:02Speaker 6: we sort of and then you just we set up
- 12:04Speaker 6: that the there's a monthly department essentially debit need and
- 12:08Speaker 6: it's as easy as that. You can then sort of
- 12:10Speaker 6: step back and know that your employee employees are being
- 12:13Speaker 6: benefited through this program.
- 12:16Speaker 5: It's fascinating.
- 12:16Speaker 3: It's a fascinating concept and I was doing some reading
- 12:19Speaker 3: about it last night. A fascinating concept and a fascinating
- 12:21Speaker 3: business model. We're gonna have you on again to talk
- 12:24Speaker 3: about this a little bit more at another time. But
- 12:27Speaker 3: give us that website again for more information right now.

- 16:10Speaker 5: All right, let's talk about Festival. Malori Richards is here.
- 16:13Speaker 5: How you doing, Mallory?
- 16:14Speaker 8: I'm doing great. Thanks for having me.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Now you kind of got I mean, yeah, you're you're, you're,

- 16:22Speaker 5: But you kind of stepped up to the plate as
- 16:24Speaker 5: an interim director. Is that right?
- 16:25Speaker 13: Not interim director but interim marketing production specialists. Brittany Javens
- 16:30Speaker 13: stepped up as the interim CEO.
- 16:32Speaker 5: I got you.
- 16:32Speaker 8: But yeah, we're working with.
- 16:33Speaker 13: Kate, who is our full time employee of Festival right
- 16:37Speaker 13: now to present our twenty first year of events here
- 16:39Speaker 13: in Charleston.
- 16:40Speaker 3: All right, let's talk about what we got going on,
- 16:41Speaker 3: because you're already underway. Well, what has already happened and
- 16:44Speaker 3: what's to come?
- 16:45Speaker 13: Last night we kicked everything off with our speaker series
- 16:47Speaker 13: Three Things, which is three guests talking about their first
- 16:51Speaker 13: favorite and future as.
- 16:53Speaker 5: I actually did that last year and it was awesome. Yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 5: I had a great time.
- 16:56Speaker 8: It's so fun. It was it was rainy, but the
- 16:58Speaker 8: sky's clear.
- 16:59Speaker 13: You did a yeah, and Magnuson was there, Jason Young
- 17:04Speaker 13: and Nlita Sanchez.
- 17:05Speaker 8: We had a great time.
- 17:06Speaker 13: But that was our first event that kicked everything off,
- 17:08Speaker 13: and that was celebrating the tenth year of three things,
- 17:11Speaker 13: so ten seasons under our belt. As part of festival tonight,
- 17:16Speaker 13: we will continue everything with a community drum circle down
- 17:19Speaker 13: at Hadad Riverfront Park at six pm. And we also
- 17:22Speaker 13: have a cool thing called live music Bingo thanks to
- 17:24Speaker 13: Arts Amplified here in Charleston, which we'll start at seven
- 17:27Speaker 13: pm at five Street Brewing and Shane Mead will be
- 17:30Speaker 13: the performer there tonight.
- 17:32Speaker 5: So give us the whole concept behind festival.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I mean, because we hear it's one of those things
- 17:36Speaker 3: in Charleston, you know, along with Regatta and we had
- 17:39Speaker 3: all these things going on. You hear it thrown out there,
- 17:40Speaker 3: But what was the concept behind fest?
- 17:42Speaker 8: Of all the concept behind festival.
- 17:45Speaker 13: So a few heavy hitters here, Larry Gross being one
- 17:48Speaker 13: of them, who you all are probably familiar through Mountain stage,
- 17:54Speaker 13: Daniel Jones and Vic Grigaracci, they all got together and said, hey,
- 17:58Speaker 13: we need something like Sple, which is in Charleston, South Carolina.
- 18:02Speaker 13: It's a major arts festival, multi day, multi media, everything
- 18:07Speaker 13: you could possibly imagine, and they wanted to build that
- 18:09Speaker 13: up here in Charleston, West Virginia. And so they thought
- 18:13Speaker 13: that you know, wine and jazz was happening. They build
- 18:16Speaker 13: everything around that, and they wanted to create this event
- 18:19Speaker 13: where everyone could access the arts, maybe not necessarily in
- 18:23Speaker 13: a building, but outside for free, so it's accessible to everyone.
- 18:27Speaker 13: And it grew from a three day festival all the
- 18:29Speaker 13: way to a fifteen day festival on our fifteenth year.
- 18:32Speaker 13: But now that we're back in our or now that
- 18:34Speaker 13: we're approaching our twenty first year, we're scaling things back
- 18:37Speaker 13: to go back to the basics and really focus on
- 18:38Speaker 13: what festival does well.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And I love the fact when you talk about the
- 18:41Speaker 3: arts again, that you're not there's various ways for people
- 18:45Speaker 3: to enjoy arts, and you're not necessarily going to look
- 18:48Speaker 3: at it in a quote unquote museum right now.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Is anything wrong with that?
- 18:51Speaker 3: But you're actually you're actually outside for the most part,
- 18:53Speaker 3: and you're actually being able to take part in all these.
- 18:55Speaker 8: Yeah, live music, theater, dance.
- 18:57Speaker 13: You are able to enjoy those in theaters, and we
- 18:59Speaker 13: do have ticket at events when you're in the Clay Center,
- 19:02Speaker 13: which is a state of the art performance center, or
- 19:04Speaker 13: you can walk down the Carriage Trail and enjoy.
- 19:05Speaker 8: Those same things in a much different atmosphere.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Talking Toboli, Richard's about festival to Day of Island show
- 19:11Speaker 3: in five eighty line brought to you in part by
- 19:13Speaker 3: Husband's Pizza. This month get a large eight and inch
- 19:15Speaker 3: pepperoni pizza and an order of cinnamon byes twenty ninety nine.
- 19:18Speaker 3: EA didn't pick up or get delivery by going to
- 19:20Speaker 3: Husbandsizza dot com and put you on the spot here, Mallorr,
- 19:22Speaker 3: what's your favorite part.
- 19:24Speaker 8: Part of festivals?
- 19:26Speaker 13: I may be biased because I've been the producer of
- 19:29Speaker 13: this thing for a while, but it's the Capitol Street
- 19:31Speaker 13: Art Fair. It's one of the biggest events of festival,
- 19:34Speaker 13: and we have artists from all over both locally, regionally
- 19:38Speaker 13: out of state that come in. We have over sixty
- 19:41Speaker 13: five artists that will join us this year. There's live
- 19:44Speaker 13: music and performance stage stages at the Children's Art Fair
- 19:47Speaker 13: by the Library. Also in front of Taylor Books, roaming
- 19:51Speaker 13: street performers. It's a very all encompassing festival experience.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Well for what it's worth. Someone just texted and said
- 19:57Speaker 3: that's their favorite part too.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Oh awesome. We love that.
- 20:00Speaker 5: There you go, there you go.
- 20:02Speaker 3: And for the people. I mean, let's talk about I'm
- 20:05Speaker 3: the ultimate capitalist. I'm always talking about money and bringing
- 20:09Speaker 3: people in. We just came off of the bike event
- 20:11Speaker 3: in Charleston, which was absolutely huge.
- 20:13Speaker 5: We got regatta coming.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Up this weekend, among the other things. We got a
- 20:17Speaker 3: bunch of people. I know it's not Charleston, but it's
- 20:19Speaker 3: the Kanaal Valley. We got all these people, which we're
- 20:20Speaker 3: going to talk about in our next segment, coming in
- 20:22Speaker 3: from literally all over the country for this pickleball event
- 20:25Speaker 3: in Nitro. We got to Charlie West Music Festival going on.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I mean, the thing I like about all these things,
- 20:31Speaker 3: and I know it's all about art, okay, but it
- 20:33Speaker 3: also puts heads and beds, and it also puts money.
- 20:36Speaker 5: In the till you.
- 20:36Speaker 13: Took the words out of my mind, Heads and Beds
- 20:39Speaker 13: Festival has an annual average income or what am I
- 20:46Speaker 13: trying to say here, one point.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Eight million dollars economic impact.
- 20:49Speaker 13: Our impact is one point eight million dollars, which is
- 20:51Speaker 13: over double our budget. So if you're thinking about money
- 20:54Speaker 13: coming in to us to produce these things and money
- 20:57Speaker 13: coming into the city to enjoy these things, it's well
- 21:01Speaker 13: worth your time if you are a supporter of festival.
- 21:04Speaker 3: And it looks like at least today we're going to
- 21:06Speaker 3: get a little bit of a break and all this
- 21:07Speaker 3: rain that we've had, oh yeah, right now, we're just
- 21:09Speaker 3: trying to get people into Charleston. Because I don't know
- 21:11Speaker 3: if you follow this story or not, but there was
- 21:14Speaker 3: and I understand it's getting better. There was a traffic
- 21:16Speaker 3: issue coming on I sixty four into Charleston today. I
- 21:19Speaker 3: drove over it literally because there was gravel all over
- 21:22Speaker 3: the interstate and I thought to myself, Okay, well there's
- 21:24Speaker 3: there's gravel, and I'm like, and I'm driving over it.
- 21:27Speaker 3: But they did shut down the interstate for a while.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Because of that.
- 21:30Speaker 3: But I do believe that they're starting to get back
- 21:33Speaker 3: to normally.
- 21:33Speaker 5: That's what I heard Jeff say in the news.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And we are going to get a little bit of
- 21:37Speaker 3: a break they tell us from the rain today. But
- 21:38Speaker 3: it looks like tomorrow we got more rain back in
- 21:40Speaker 3: the forecast. So where is the best place though for
- 21:44Speaker 3: people to learn more and get and then because there's
- 21:47Speaker 3: so many things Mallory that are going on, what's the
- 21:50Speaker 3: best spot to go to so people can just get
- 21:52Speaker 3: a schedule.
- 21:53Speaker 13: The best spot to get the schedule is online at
- 21:56Speaker 13: festival Charleston dot com, which is Fest of All with
- 21:58Speaker 13: two l's. You can also so go to one of
- 22:00Speaker 13: your local businesses Taylor Books, five Street Brewing. They all
- 22:04Speaker 13: have our printed schedules where everything is in there. I
- 22:08Speaker 13: will say the drum circle tonight at six pm used
- 22:10Speaker 13: to be at Slack Plaza, but we had to change
- 22:13Speaker 13: the location there. It'll be at how Ad Riverfront Park tonight.
- 22:15Speaker 3: I also don't want to forget that we have live
- 22:18Speaker 3: on the levee.
- 22:19Speaker 8: So yeah, we're so excited.
- 22:21Speaker 13: Nobs Brass Band so incredible Magnolia Boulevard there bluegrass band
- 22:25Speaker 13: and Nobs Brass Band is obviously a giant brass band,
- 22:29Speaker 13: lots of high energy.

- 22:31Speaker 3: We also have this schedules available here in our studios.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I am told from sales weasel extraordinary.
- 22:36Speaker 8: Bobby Sprye, I did see those upstairs.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Yeah, at at.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Eleven eleven Virginia Street. You can stop Bier Studio during
- 22:41Speaker 3: business hours and pick one up if you'd like to.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Before we let you go, I want to talk about
- 22:45Speaker 3: the buy in from the businesses here in Charleston, because
- 22:48Speaker 3: without the businesses getting involved in this and saying we
- 22:51Speaker 3: love this, it ain't happening.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Talk about that we have.
- 22:56Speaker 13: So Fest of All is a group effort. Teamwork makes
- 22:58Speaker 13: the dream work. We get some from everyone all over
- 23:01Speaker 13: the city. And like I said, our economic impact is
- 23:04Speaker 13: pretty large compared to what we are spending on our end.
- 23:08Speaker 13: I've talked to a few local businesses on Capitol Street.
- 23:12Speaker 13: They say that during festival they sometimes make more money
- 23:16Speaker 13: during festival than they do during the holiday season. So,
- 23:19Speaker 13: especially with the Capitol Street Art Fair, people are spending
- 23:21Speaker 13: time downtown. They're not just going to our events, but
- 23:24Speaker 13: they're also visiting these businesses.
- 23:26Speaker 3: All right, yeah, again, there's a We've got schedules available here,
- 23:30Speaker 3: they're available online.

- 27:55Speaker 3: because their parents are crappy and we're too stingy to
- 27:57Speaker 3: use taxes to help them. Let's talk a little pickleball.
- 28:01Speaker 3: We'll go for we transition from one to the other.

- 28:06Speaker 3: How you doing, man?
- 28:07Speaker 4: Good?
- 28:07Speaker 5: How are you retired now?
- 28:08Speaker 9: Right?
- 28:08Speaker 4: I am retired. I'm still helping Metro out with a
- 28:10Speaker 4: pickleball tournament. We got some great pros in and a
- 28:12Speaker 4: great tournament, right all right?
- 28:13Speaker 5: So what are you doing other than playing pickleball in
- 28:15Speaker 5: your retirement?
- 28:16Speaker 4: I got a great wife and we spent a lot
- 28:18Speaker 4: of time taking walks, a little bit of golf and
- 28:21Speaker 4: taking care of family.
- 28:21Speaker 5: How long were you How long were you there?
- 28:24Speaker 4: Well, with the county for forty six.
- 28:26Speaker 5: Ye years in various role sheriff and so on and
- 28:28Speaker 5: so on.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it's sheriff for thirty some years now with Metro
- 28:30Speaker 4: for twelve.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Okay, and we're getting ready for this big pickleball event
- 28:35Speaker 3: in Nitro. And you've been on several times over the
- 28:38Speaker 3: last couple of years talking about this and to use
- 28:41Speaker 3: the average advertising cliche.
- 28:42Speaker 5: It does get bigger and better every year.
- 28:44Speaker 4: It's great. The Nitro has done a great job. They
- 28:46Speaker 4: put a great facility in for us. I have a
- 28:48Speaker 4: lot of team people that help us put this tournament on.
- 28:51Speaker 4: It's grown every year. We're up to almost three hundred
- 28:53Speaker 4: people this year. We've got some great pros coming in.
- 28:56Speaker 4: It's just great. And one thing we want to make sure,
- 28:58Speaker 4: I want to say before we get started here is
- 29:00Speaker 4: it's free. We have some great players, some of the
- 29:03Speaker 4: best in the country, in the world come into play,
- 29:05Speaker 4: and we want to make sure people come down, enjoy themselves,
- 29:08Speaker 4: walk around and watch his play is really exciting.
- 29:10Speaker 3: And pickleball itself, I mean again, people have heard you
- 29:12Speaker 3: talking about it, and we're going to talk to some
- 29:14Speaker 3: pros that are here, but describe pickleball.
- 29:17Speaker 5: To people that may not understand it complete.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I'm as Susannah, Okay, she is the pro and she
- 29:22Speaker 4: has been playing. He's great at this, all.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Right, Susanna Barr. And you've been on the show before,
- 29:26Speaker 3: but you were always on the phone. This first time,
- 29:27Speaker 3: I think we've had you in person. I think yes, yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 17: Last year I called in from Idaho, which is where
- 29:32Speaker 17: I live.
- 29:33Speaker 12: Uh, huh.
- 29:34Speaker 17: But now we're here, we're going to be running some
- 29:36Speaker 17: clinics today and then obviously playing this weekend.
- 29:39Speaker 12: But yeah, pickleball is.
- 29:40Speaker 17: A combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. I heard
- 29:45Speaker 17: one person say once it was like, you're playing ping pong,
- 29:47Speaker 17: but you're standing on the.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Table, okay, which is generally frowned upon in most most
- 29:52Speaker 3: most establishments. Now we have Dominicque Catalano. I pronounce that right, Dominique.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Let's h what's your love of pickaball? What's your story?
- 30:01Speaker 3: What's your story?
- 30:01Speaker 18: Oh gosh, so I've been in pickaball for twenty four
- 30:04Speaker 18: years now. I started in pick a ball in two
- 30:05Speaker 18: thousand and one. I was a high school pe and
- 30:07Speaker 18: health teacher in suburbs of Chicago. But I also to
- 30:10Speaker 18: live in Boise, Idaho now and I work for the
- 30:14Speaker 18: Association of Pickleball Players the app Professional Pickleball Tour. I
- 30:18Speaker 18: do the commentary and work with ESPN and CBS Sports
- 30:21Speaker 18: as the playby or color analyst for those networks and
- 30:25Speaker 18: for the pro Tour.
- 30:27Speaker 5: So how does one prepare for do? I mean?
- 30:29Speaker 3: I've done some play by play in color commentary on
- 30:31Speaker 3: various sports I've never done pickleball, how do you imagine
- 30:34Speaker 3: the preparation is about the same, isn't it.
- 30:36Speaker 5: It's pretty much the same.
- 30:37Speaker 18: I have had pros asked me if I would step
- 30:40Speaker 18: away from my iPad so that they could see my
- 30:43Speaker 18: scouting reports on players, and I refuse to do that,
- 30:45Speaker 18: but pretty much the exact same thing. I prep the same.
- 30:49Speaker 18: I watch a lot of pickleball when I'm not on
- 30:52Speaker 18: the venue and on site, so I have a lot
- 30:54Speaker 18: of notes and a lot of scouting reports on probably
- 30:57Speaker 18: over two hundred players.
- 30:58Speaker 3: I want to talk about, if we could, the growth
- 31:03Speaker 3: of pickleball and how it has become so popular. Johnny
- 31:07Speaker 3: and I've been talking about this for the last couple
- 31:08Speaker 3: of years, and Sarah, I mean this, I don't know
- 31:12Speaker 3: what there has been a sport or an activity or
- 31:15Speaker 3: for some people, it's a hobby. For you, guys, it's
- 31:17Speaker 3: your life that has grown ass as quickly as what
- 31:22Speaker 3: pickleball has. I mean, people just can't get enough of.
- 31:25Speaker 12: It, that's true.
- 31:26Speaker 17: I mean it's so it's easy to learn, it's hard
- 31:29Speaker 17: to master, but it's just a lot of fun. And
- 31:32Speaker 17: I think that's the biggest appeal is you can go
- 31:34Speaker 17: out and play with your grandparents, you can play with
- 31:37Speaker 17: your friends. You laugh a lot. Now there might not
- 31:42Speaker 17: be as much laughing in a tournament. People are are
- 31:46Speaker 17: there to win and do their best, but overall it's
- 31:49Speaker 17: just a really fun game and it's just a great
- 31:52Speaker 17: way to be social and healthy and get some exercise.
- 31:56Speaker 17: And so, you know, we love it. We've been playing
- 31:59Speaker 17: for a lot time and we still love it.
- 32:01Speaker 3: And Nitro has just done such a great job John,
- 32:05Speaker 3: in kind of becoming the pickleball capital of not only
- 32:10Speaker 3: of West Virginia, but I mean literally, man, I mean
- 32:12Speaker 3: like this probably this part of the country.
- 32:14Speaker 4: They've done a great job. It's covered nine great courts,
- 32:17Speaker 4: indoors and outdoor courts. We have people coming from fifteen
- 32:21Speaker 4: different states to play in this tournament this year, so
- 32:24Speaker 4: it's encompassed in the area without you know, outside of
- 32:28Speaker 4: West Virginia and all the way to Idaho. And we
- 32:30Speaker 4: have quite a few pros coming in this year from
- 32:32Speaker 4: home over the country.
- 32:33Speaker 5: And you always are really good.
- 32:34Speaker 3: And Sarah, I know you've done this in the past
- 32:36Speaker 3: about about offering these clinics where you I mean, it's.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Not in John and I talked about it.
- 32:41Speaker 3: I think when you were on the phone with us
- 32:43Speaker 3: last year, we said, this is the equivalent to saying,
- 32:47Speaker 3: I want to be a golfer and I'm taking lessons
- 32:52Speaker 3: a few years ago from Tiger Woods. You know, I'm
- 32:56Speaker 3: gonna I'm gonna learn. I'm gonna learn basketball, and I'm
- 32:58Speaker 3: gonna learn it from Michael Jordan. I'm gonna learn from
- 33:00Speaker 3: Lebron or somebody like that.
- 33:01Speaker 4: We call Susannah the Michael Jordan's Michelow.
- 33:04Speaker 5: That's a that's a pretty big title. Susannah. You good
- 33:06Speaker 5: with them?
- 33:07Speaker 12: Oh, I mean it's kind of become an ongoing joke.
- 33:10Speaker 17: And part of the joke is is it the MJ
- 33:13Speaker 17: So is it Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson.
- 33:14Speaker 12: We don't really have But no, it's super fun.
- 33:18Speaker 17: Last year, you guys made me a huge banner and
- 33:21Speaker 17: it's hanging in my garage. I have to see it
- 33:23Speaker 17: every day when I drive in at the Michael Jordan
- 33:26Speaker 17: or the MJ of Peockleball.
- 33:27Speaker 5: I put it up the day we moved in.
- 33:29Speaker 17: But no, I mean, yeah, you know, we love coaching,
- 33:32Speaker 17: and so we're excited to be able to come back
- 33:33Speaker 17: here and share some of our knowledge with the players
- 33:36Speaker 17: and just help grow everybody as players, and we try
- 33:41Speaker 17: to make it a lot of fun as well. And
- 33:42Speaker 17: then we'll be around to you know, the players that
- 33:45Speaker 17: take our clinic, we'll be there watching their matches all
- 33:46Speaker 17: week and two, putting a little pressure on them.
- 33:49Speaker 3: But Dave Island showing five any Live is broad to
- 33:50Speaker 3: you in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
- 33:53Speaker 3: Dirty Birds. Tonight the Birds entertaining high point another Thirsty
- 33:56Speaker 3: Thursday with one dollar beers and water starting at five thirty.
- 33:59Speaker 3: For more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com or check
- 34:01Speaker 3: out their social media. So when you are instructing these people,
- 34:06Speaker 3: what are some of the things either one of you,
- 34:08Speaker 3: because I know you do this well, what are some
- 34:09Speaker 3: of the things that how does that work? I mean,
- 34:12Speaker 3: do you just one on one? Do you do it
- 34:14Speaker 3: in groups? Combination of both?
- 34:15Speaker 18: So it's kind of a combination of both. Depends on
- 34:17Speaker 18: what the area we're going to, because we do this
- 34:19Speaker 18: all over the country, so it depends on the area
- 34:22Speaker 18: what they're looking for. Mostly we do groups, and we'll
- 34:24Speaker 18: do clinics where we'll have eight to sixteen people and
- 34:27Speaker 18: we bounce back and forth from court to court. Sometimes
- 34:30Speaker 18: we'll do what we call three and me's or play
- 34:32Speaker 18: with a pro where I'll play or Susannah will play
- 34:35Speaker 18: and they'll have three other amateurs and we'll play points
- 34:38Speaker 18: with them. And a lot of times they'll have us
- 34:40Speaker 18: come in and do some private lessons where you want
- 34:42Speaker 18: a one on one lesson. So it all kind of
- 34:44Speaker 18: depends on the area, what the people are looking for,
- 34:46Speaker 18: what they want. But we've been doing this for so
- 34:49Speaker 18: long it's a lot of it's rinse and repeat, But
- 34:51Speaker 18: when we come back to places multiple times, it's got
- 34:54Speaker 18: to keep changing it up. So we're doing a clinic
- 34:57Speaker 18: from one to three today and then three to from
- 35:01Speaker 18: five to seven in the evening for you know, the
- 35:03Speaker 18: working class people that have to work and can't get
- 35:05Speaker 18: off in the middle.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Of the day, people that aren't retired exactly. Not mentioning
- 35:08Speaker 5: any name.
- 35:09Speaker 18: Not mentioning any names in the studio, but yeah, so
- 35:11Speaker 18: we're doing that in the evening. One is a tournament
- 35:14Speaker 18: prep clinic where a lot of the players are coming
- 35:16Speaker 18: with their partner and so we'll get them into you know,
- 35:18Speaker 18: what it takes to play in a tournament, kind of
- 35:20Speaker 18: that mindset aspect of it as well.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Talk about the tournament mindset a little bit, and when
- 35:26Speaker 3: when you folks are entering tournaments and things of that nature,
- 35:29Speaker 3: because obviously this is a fun sport. It's just like golf.
- 35:32Speaker 3: I mean, you know it's a it's a fun sport,
- 35:35Speaker 3: but it's also ultra competitive. You said that earlier about
- 35:38Speaker 3: how you laugh and joke until it's tournament time and
- 35:40Speaker 3: then it's serious biz.
- 35:41Speaker 12: Right, Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:44Speaker 17: I mean, you know, the Nitro Tournament, the Metro Tournament
- 35:47Speaker 17: has a great prize pool. It is twenty thousand dollars
- 35:50Speaker 17: this year. I mean that's quite a bit of money.
- 35:52Speaker 17: So we're all you know, that's.
- 35:54Speaker 5: Why you get people coming from all these different states.
- 35:56Speaker 3: How many states you say, John, fifteen different states, fifteen
- 35:58Speaker 3: different stats are coming in for this, but go ahead.
- 35:59Speaker 17: Yeah, so we have our eyes on the prize.
- 36:02Speaker 12: But you know, we definitely prep ahead of time.
- 36:05Speaker 17: I mean, the pros that are coming in have been
- 36:07Speaker 17: scouring the list to see which players are coming.
- 36:09Speaker 12: So we have our own notes. We're studying their.
- 36:11Speaker 17: Games, having some game plans about what we're going to
- 36:14Speaker 17: be doing against our competitors, how we want to play.
- 36:18Speaker 12: It was nice that we got out yesterday.
- 36:20Speaker 17: Got here a little early and we're able to hit
- 36:22Speaker 17: because in fact, the conditions are different everywhere you go.
- 36:25Speaker 17: The way the ball bounces is different depending on where
- 36:27Speaker 17: you go. The humidity affects the game as well, So
- 36:31Speaker 17: kind of having a little bit of time to make
- 36:32Speaker 17: some of those adjustments that we need to make to
- 36:34Speaker 17: our game. Yeah, I mean we take it seriously. It
- 36:38Speaker 17: is for the pros it is there. For most of them,
- 36:41Speaker 17: it's their career and so they want to come out
- 36:43Speaker 17: and play their absolute best. But on top of that,
- 36:46Speaker 17: all the amateurs are out there. It's their chance to
- 36:49Speaker 17: shine as well, and so you know, just for them,
- 36:52Speaker 17: they're going to be having those mental talks with their partners.
- 36:55Speaker 17: How do we you know, communicate with each other, how
- 36:58Speaker 17: are we successful on the court, how we support each other,
- 37:01Speaker 17: and so all of that goes into play, just like
- 37:04Speaker 17: any sport.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Also, I do want to throw this out there. Per
- 37:07Speaker 3: friend of the Show Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro,
- 37:10Speaker 3: there is a ribbon cutting at the city's new indoor
- 37:13Speaker 3: pickleball complex as part of the Nitro Athletic Complex that's
- 37:16Speaker 3: set for tomorrow at eleven thirty at the Athletic Complex
- 37:19Speaker 3: sixteen fifty Park Avenue in Nitro, So I told Joe
- 37:22Speaker 3: I would definitely get that on there.
- 37:23Speaker 4: In the season, and the tournament will start right after
- 37:26Speaker 4: that at noon with the singles division.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Before we let you get what's your all impressions of
- 37:32Speaker 3: West Virginia.
- 37:33Speaker 18: Oh my gosh, Like last year, we didn't know what
- 37:36Speaker 18: to expect coming here. As soon as we land. We
- 37:38Speaker 18: were talking on the way here. When you land at
- 37:40Speaker 18: the airport in Charleston, you look like you're coming in
- 37:43Speaker 18: and going to land on top of the trees. And
- 37:46Speaker 18: last year we were coming in, We're like, is there
- 37:48Speaker 18: a runway or are we just gonna land on the
- 37:49Speaker 18: top of the trees, And then all of a sudden,
- 37:51Speaker 18: the runway comes out of nowhere. And so this year
- 37:53Speaker 18: we anticipated it. We were watching it, but you know
- 37:55Speaker 18: last year and then coming in this year, as soon
- 37:57Speaker 18: as we get here, it's almost like a breath of
- 38:00Speaker 18: fresh air. Everyone here, from John and and and Matt
- 38:04Speaker 18: and everyone who runs the tournament, and how they host
- 38:07Speaker 18: us and how they've kind of reached out to us
- 38:10Speaker 18: and taken care of us is above and beyond what
- 38:13Speaker 18: we can expect. And it was, you know, last year
- 38:16Speaker 18: we came here and we're like, Okay, you know we're
- 38:18Speaker 18: gonna go this year and we'll see before we left,
- 38:20Speaker 18: we went to lunch when you guys dropped us off
- 38:22Speaker 18: at the airport last year, and we looked and we're like,
- 38:25Speaker 18: just tell us what the date is next year, we'll
- 38:27Speaker 18: be here. But it's just it's just so nice. It's
- 38:29Speaker 18: refreshing and pickleball to have an event that does have
- 38:32Speaker 18: a good prize pool, but it also gets that old
- 38:35Speaker 18: school pickleball feeling where it's a community.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:38Speaker 3: And uh and we're kind of welcoming sorts here in
- 38:41Speaker 3: West Virginia. We we like to we like to have company,
- 38:43Speaker 3: as as my grandma would say.
- 38:46Speaker 6: Uh.
- 38:46Speaker 3: And hopefully while you're here, you'll get to visit tutors
- 38:48Speaker 3: and you'll get to you get you some uh, get
- 38:51Speaker 3: your Pepperoni role while you're here as well. Make make
- 38:53Speaker 3: sure because I know you guys train, but you know
- 38:56Speaker 3: you gotta have there's got to be room for Mary
- 38:57Speaker 3: b every now.
- 38:58Speaker 5: They've got to have those cheap days. Yeah, exactly, John,
- 39:02Speaker 5: go ahead.
- 39:02Speaker 4: I just want to thank them for coming. They've been great.
- 39:06Speaker 4: They're great people. Not they're great pickleball players, but beyond that,
- 39:09Speaker 4: they're great people. I want to thank the City of Nitro.
- 39:11Speaker 4: I want to thank the Metro nine one one employees
- 39:13Speaker 4: who save lives every day. All of our sponsors and
- 39:16Speaker 4: especially Ohio Valley Bank and three or four at Valley
- 39:19Speaker 4: Point are big sponsors. But we want to thank them all.
- 39:21Speaker 4: We appreciate it.
- 39:22Speaker 3: Yeah, without sponsors, nothing happens, nothing happened, nothing happens. And again,
- 39:25Speaker 3: this is a great event for Metro nine.
- 39:28Speaker 5: One one as well. We don't want to we don't
- 39:30Speaker 5: want to leave that part out.
- 39:32Speaker 4: John, Yes, thank you. Yeah, our employees are great employer and.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Give us the timeline again.
- 39:36Speaker 4: What starts the opening tomorrow is with the city is
- 39:39Speaker 4: eleven thirty. Tournament starts at noon and then Saturday and
- 39:43Speaker 4: Sunday we have tournament doubles eight to four Saturday and Sunday,
- 39:47Speaker 4: maybe even in the six or seven o'clock. So come
- 39:49Speaker 4: out and play, like I said, or come out and watch.
- 39:51Speaker 4: It's free. It's it's a wonderful time. It's the most

- 43:08Speaker 5: So you a pickleball player player, you know what.
- 43:10Speaker 20: I bought a paddle and I have a pickleball shirt,
- 43:14Speaker 20: and somebody bought me pickleball socks.
- 43:16Speaker 5: But I have not officially played pickleball yet.
- 43:18Speaker 3: So you're that guy that on the golf course goes

- 43:34Speaker 3: Meadows is coming up a talk on he's their resident

- 43:43Speaker 3: Let's let's all go and our boss here, the new
- 43:46Speaker 3: boss here, Jared, is also a very avid golfer and
- 43:50Speaker 3: we got plenty of golf.
- 43:51Speaker 20: Listen, Sean Meyer, if you're in the fair way when
- 43:53Speaker 20: I'm playing your safe. If you're in the woods. You're

- 43:58Speaker 20: the world and then you.
- 43:59Speaker 5: Have to insult and attorney and those are hard to find,
- 44:04Speaker 5: all right. So I'm going to talk about.
- 44:06Speaker 3: The Judicial Annex. Yeah, we haven't talked about that in
- 44:09Speaker 3: a while. So what you got for you know what
- 44:11Speaker 3: it was? You remember, Gosh, we've talked about this a
- 44:14Speaker 3: few times. Kind of turned in the saga of the
- 44:16Speaker 3: Judicial Annex at this point. But it was one of
- 44:19Speaker 3: those projects that was very concerning for the County Commission
- 44:22Speaker 3: because we didn't really know exactly where the bids were
- 44:26Speaker 3: going to come in. You know, we were dealing with
- 44:28Speaker 3: a lot of what I've been calling the post COVID
- 44:31Speaker 3: construction money that was just flowing in everywhere. So a
- 44:34Speaker 3: lot of the contractors were able to come in and
- 44:35Speaker 3: just kind of name their own price on Unfortunately, when
- 44:38Speaker 3: the bids came in initially back in October twenty twenty four,
- 44:42Speaker 3: we were two point eight million dollars over budget, and
- 44:44Speaker 3: we tried and tried to work it out with the contractors,
- 44:46Speaker 3: simply couldn't and so we made the tough decision to
- 44:50Speaker 3: basically break the project up and rebid it, and we're
- 44:54Speaker 3: actually we actually reduced the price by five point five
- 44:57Speaker 3: million dollars, so we saved five point five million dollars
- 45:00Speaker 3: tax payer money by breaking the project project up and
- 45:04Speaker 3: rebidding it. So we're officially two point eight million dollars
- 45:07Speaker 3: under budget now by doing that.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Which is not something you hear very often in the
- 45:11Speaker 5: world of government.
- 45:12Speaker 20: Man, Well, when the bits came in yesterday and we
- 45:14Speaker 20: had five, so we broke it up into floor, so
- 45:17Speaker 20: the fifth floor came in around two million dollars, and
- 45:20Speaker 20: then we broke it up broke out the first floor remodel,
- 45:24Speaker 20: which is much more complex that Prey Construction, who actually
- 45:29Speaker 20: is also doing the Shawnee Sports Complex project right now,
- 45:32Speaker 20: doing a great job. That came in at eight point
- 45:34Speaker 20: one eight million, one hundred and forty six nine to
- 45:37Speaker 20: fifty three, which they were the lowest bidders. And so
- 45:40Speaker 20: we had five bidders yesterday for the first floor remodel
- 45:43Speaker 20: and it ranged from around eight million to twelve million,
- 45:46Speaker 20: and Prey was the lowest bidder. And so if you
- 45:49Speaker 20: add that to the fifth floor, that comes in around
- 45:51Speaker 20: a little over ten million dollars and it was sixteen,
- 45:55Speaker 20: so we save five point five million dollars by redoing that.
- 45:57Speaker 20: It was it was a gamble, but it paid off
- 46:00Speaker 20: nine to fifty three of a day.

- 46:09Speaker 3: So take us back through the process. Why do we
- 46:12Speaker 3: need a judicial annex to begin with?
- 46:14Speaker 20: Well, we needed a remodel of the current annexts because
- 46:19Speaker 20: the legislature added additional matterstrates and judges, and we also
- 46:23Speaker 20: have wanted upgrade security. So the fifth floor, which is
- 46:26Speaker 20: where the additional circuit judge is going to go, was
- 46:29Speaker 20: not a very complicated remodel. We just went in and basically,
- 46:33Speaker 20: and I'm not saying it was just paint and you know,
- 46:35Speaker 20: some flooring, because it was more complex than that, but
- 46:37Speaker 20: it was we didn't have to build onto anything but
- 46:41Speaker 20: the first floor when you're adding three additional magistrates and
- 46:45Speaker 20: staff and courtrooms, and that was a bit more complex.
- 46:48Speaker 20: And so that's where the trouble has been as far
- 46:52Speaker 20: as the financial issues, because when when the bid first
- 46:56Speaker 20: came back it was it was nearly sixteen million dollars.
- 46:59Speaker 20: Because they love everything in together. We didn't get a
- 47:01Speaker 20: breakdown of the bids. We didn't have that many people
- 47:05Speaker 20: bidding on the projects because there was so much again
- 47:08Speaker 20: post COVID money was out there and the construction companies
- 47:12Speaker 20: could just pick their projects. And now that's kind of
- 47:15Speaker 20: drying up and things are a lot more competitive, and
- 47:18Speaker 20: so that was what we hoped we would see. That's
- 47:21Speaker 20: kind of what we had seen kind of the trend
- 47:23Speaker 20: over the last six to eight months. And so when
- 47:27Speaker 20: I met with Commissioner Wheeler and I think at that
- 47:29Speaker 20: time Commissioner Slotnik, who was sitting in temporarily, we made
- 47:35Speaker 20: the tough decision to rebid it. Now it could have
- 47:37Speaker 20: come back more, and that was a gamble we were
- 47:39Speaker 20: going to have to take, and if that happened, we
- 47:41Speaker 20: were going to have to come up with planed C
- 47:44Speaker 20: and which was not going to be a very good
- 47:46Speaker 20: option potentially, you know, splitting up the annex into two
- 47:49Speaker 20: different parts of town. But Plan B worked out and
- 47:53Speaker 20: we're happy to report that we say five and a
- 47:56Speaker 20: half million dollars to taxpayer money.

- 48:14Speaker 3: to this. I'm want to read this to you and said,
- 48:15Speaker 3: I asked this yesterday, but think it should be opposed
- 48:18Speaker 3: to a county commissioner. A lot of these activities and
- 48:21Speaker 3: we were talking about, you know, the different activities going
- 48:23Speaker 3: on to the Charleston area.
- 48:24Speaker 5: The activities are.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Nice, but a lot of us like other things like
- 48:27Speaker 3: amusement marks and beach boardwalk parties old Myrtle beach style.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Why not bring back the Kenaw County Fair. Possibly hold
- 48:34Speaker 3: it at the Shawnee Sports Complex or some of the
- 48:36Speaker 3: empty lots at South Ridge. Kind of a beach boardwalk
- 48:39Speaker 3: block party on the boulevard or Capitol Street during regatta
- 48:43Speaker 3: with things like shag or twist contests, boardwalk game shacks, oldies, music,
- 48:47Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 48:48Speaker 5: By the way, I'm a gen xer, but the stuff
- 48:50Speaker 5: was so much fun, you know what.
- 48:53Speaker 20: First of all, we'd looked at bringing back the county
- 48:55Speaker 20: Fair and doing at Shawnee. But I do remember those
- 48:59Speaker 20: old little beach parties. This was what fifteen plus years ago,
- 49:04Speaker 20: but I think it was a charitable organization that did it,
- 49:06Speaker 20: but I don't remember which one. And they were a
- 49:09Speaker 20: lot of fun. They had bands and you know, the
- 49:11Speaker 20: live music and a lot of different things going on.
- 49:13Speaker 20: I mean, I like the idea. It's something that I
- 49:15Speaker 20: know that the commission Wheelers looked at as well. So yeah,
- 49:18Speaker 20: it's not outside the realm of possibility. I think it's
- 49:20Speaker 20: probably probably would be a good idea. And now to
- 49:22Speaker 20: hold it up the same time as Regatta would be
- 49:26Speaker 20: a logistical nightmare.
- 49:28Speaker 5: Yeah, we're already bursted at the seams here.
- 49:31Speaker 20: Yeah, we would probably need to do it on a
- 49:32Speaker 20: weekend when nothing else's schedule.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Let's talk about some things going on out at Shawnee.
- 49:39Speaker 3: I mean we've got I got an email this morning
- 49:42Speaker 3: about a I think there's a ribbon cutting, grid opening
- 49:45Speaker 3: something going on.
- 49:45Speaker 5: What do you got out there? Yeah? So today we're
- 49:47Speaker 5: is it today? Yeah?
- 49:48Speaker 20: It's today we're cutting the ribbon at Shawnee on the
- 49:51Speaker 20: new playground. And that was that's something that's been in
- 49:54Speaker 20: the works for a long time. And you know, those
- 49:56Speaker 20: are incredibly expensive, and we appreciate rodnel loftice he donated
- 50:01Speaker 20: his time, went out there and tore down the old
- 50:03Speaker 20: playground and the County Commission and I forget exactly how
- 50:07Speaker 20: much the project costs, but it's it's going to be
- 50:10Speaker 20: nice and so it's in the front part of the park.
- 50:14Speaker 20: And I know we've had a pretty significant effort over
- 50:17Speaker 20: the years trying to upgrade all of our playgrounds. I mean,
- 50:20Speaker 20: some of them were simply not safe. You couldn't play
- 50:22Speaker 20: on them, and so we were doing that with the
- 50:24Speaker 20: Shawnee Sports Complex. That's going to happen today, so if
- 50:27Speaker 20: you want to come out and check it out, bring
- 50:29Speaker 20: the kids. I think that's at two PM, so we'll
- 50:31Speaker 20: be able to to unveil that today. Then in August,
- 50:36Speaker 20: we're cutting the ribbon on the new Shawnee Sports Complex
- 50:39Speaker 20: Entrance Center, which is about a five million dollar project.
- 50:44Speaker 20: Thanks to our US senator's former Senator Mansion Senator Capito
- 50:49Speaker 20: and also current Senator former Governor Jim Justice, who helped
- 50:55Speaker 20: us get a million dollars. But they help with the
- 50:58Speaker 20: tune of about three million dollars and so we wouldn't
- 51:00Speaker 20: have been able to build that new building without their help.
- 51:02Speaker 5: And we're very apprecive. Chech says it was the Big Brothers,
- 51:06Speaker 5: Big sisters, Martle beach back. That's exactly right, that's right.
- 51:08Speaker 5: How many that's been a long time ago, but it
- 51:10Speaker 5: was a blast.
- 51:11Speaker 3: And I do know I'll give a shout out to
- 51:13Speaker 3: the CAMC Foundation folks. I know that they have a
- 51:16Speaker 3: like a lu al type of event usually every year at
- 51:18Speaker 3: the Clay Center or something like that. So Robbie Queen
- 51:20Speaker 3: and his folks, so yeah, I always do a great
- 51:22Speaker 3: job with that. Before we let you go, any updates
- 51:24Speaker 3: on the Capitol Sports Center, you can give.
- 51:26Speaker 20: Us, you know, not right now, we're waiting. I know
- 51:29Speaker 20: we've each put in some earmark requests the city and
- 51:32Speaker 20: the county.
- 51:34Speaker 5: You know, hopefully that will go through.
- 51:36Speaker 20: I think if if that's in there and Congress passes
- 51:40Speaker 20: a budget, then we're back on track.
- 51:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 51:42Speaker 20: That was that's a big project for the city, for
- 51:45Speaker 20: the county, for the entire state, and we've got the
- 51:48Speaker 20: right people in place. Hopefully we'll be able to make
- 51:51Speaker 20: it happen. And if not, then we'll have to try
- 51:53Speaker 20: to scale it back some. But you know, it's just
- 51:56Speaker 20: one of those things where it was an unusual turn
- 51:59Speaker 20: of events. Believe, when you get an Earmark award, it
- 52:02Speaker 20: goes through. This is one of the rare instances where
- 52:05Speaker 20: it didn't. And not just ours, it was all over
- 52:07Speaker 20: the country, so it's not like, you know, they focused
- 52:09Speaker 20: on us.
- 52:10Speaker 5: But uh, we're we're hopeful it will. It will happen,
- 52:14Speaker 5: all right.
- 52:14Speaker 3: We got to leave it there, Ben, I appreciate you
- 52:16Speaker 3: being here. Thanks, thanks a lot. Do you want to
