Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint James the Greater, Apostle. July 25 in the year of our Lord 2026.
• 0:22
Saint James, brother of Saint John and son of Zebedee, was a native of Bethsaida in Galilee. He is surnamed the greater.
• 0:35
One day his mother, approaching the Savior, asked of him the favor for her two sons to be seated, one at his right hand and the other at his left in his kingdom. As mentioned in the gospel, Christ then foretold their martyrdom. Saint James shall sit on a throne to judge the 12 tribes of Israel, but he will first have to mix his blood with that of Jesus and undergo, like all the apostles, a life of suffering and persecution such as the epistle describes. After the ascension of Jesus Christ to heaven says the office of today, James preached his divinity in Judea and Samaria. He soon betook himself to Spain.
• 1:28
When he returned to Jerusalem, Herod Agrippa, desiring to please the Jews, condemned him to death. And he was beheaded towards the year '42, a short time before the feast of Easter. It would seem that for fear of the Arabs who were masters of Jerusalem, the body of the saint was later carried to Compostela in Spain where he is greatly honored. July 25 recalls the date of this translation. His name is inscribed in the Canon of the Mass with that of Saint John, his brother.
• 2:17
In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Great reverence have I for thy friends, o God. Sovereign power is theirs in abundance.
• 2:36
Lord, I lie open to thy scrutiny. Thou knowest me, knowest when I sit down and when I rise up again. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Great reverence have I for thy friends, O God.
• 3:05
Sovereign power is theirs in abundance. The Collect, Let us pray. Be thou, O Lord, the sanctifier, and the guardian of thy people, so that being defended by the protection of thine apostle James, they may both please thee by their conduct, and serve thee with mind all untroubled, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.
• 3:57
Brethren, it seems as if God has destined us, his apostles, to be in the lowest place of all, like men under sentence of death. Such a spectacle do we present to the whole creation. Men and angels alike, we are fools for Christ's sake. You are so wise. We are so helpless.
• 4:25
You so stout of heart. You are held in honor while we are despised. Still, as I write we go hungry and thirsty and naked. We are mishandled. We have no home to settle in.
• 4:45
We are hard put to it, working with our own hands. Men revile us, and we answer with a blessing, persecute us and we make the best of it, speak ill of us and we fall to entreaty. We are still the world's refuse. Everybody thinks himself well rid of us. I am not writing this to shame you.
• 5:18
You are my dearly loved children and I would bring you to a better mind. Yes, you may have 10,000 schoolmasters in Christ but not more than one father. It was I that begot you in Christ. When I preached the gospel to you. The gradual.
• 5:46
Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth. They shall remember thy name, o Lord. Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee. Therefore shall people praise thee. Alleluia.
• 6:03
Alleluia. I have chosen you out of the world that you should go and should bring forth fruit, and your fruit should remain. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, the mother of the sons of Zebedee brought them to Jesus, falling on her knees to make a request of him.
• 6:35
And when he asked her, what is thy will? She said to him, here are my two sons. Grant that in thy kingdom one may take his place on thy right and the other on thy left. But Jesus answered, you do not know what it is you ask. Have you strength to drink the cup I am to drink of?
• 7:02
They said, we have. And he told them, you shall indeed drink of my cup. But a place on my right hand or my left is not mine to give. It is for those for whom my father has destined it. The offertory.
• 7:27
Their sound went forth into all the earth and their words to the ends of the world. The secret. May the holy sufferings of James, thy blessed apostle, commend the offerings of thy people, we beseech thee, O Lord. And since they are not worthy for any merits of ours, let them be made pleasing to thee by his prayers. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
• 8:12
Amen. World. The world The that thou is wouldst not desert the thy flock, O everlasting shepherd, but through thy blessed apostles, wouldst keep it under thy constant protection, that it may be governed by those same rulers whom, as vicars of thy work, thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of thy glory, saying without ceasing. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
• 9:14
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Communion. You who have followed me shall sit on seats judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
• 9:41
The post communion. Let us pray. Assist us, O Lord, we beseech thee by the intercession of thy blessed apostle James, for whose festivity we have joyfully partaken of thy holy sacraments. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 10:17
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint James the greater, pray for us.
