  Speaker 4: It's not only the faith food. It is the entertainment.

  Speaker 4: It is the family bonding. It's the whole package that

  Speaker 4: is affordable, that is feasible, and it is the strengthening

  Speaker 13: My house is located in the area of New Orleans

  Speaker 13: called Mid-City. And that area is between the 17th Street
• 4:35
  Speaker 13: and the London Street Canal. And we didn't know that
• 4:38
  Speaker 13: the canals had breached. And my neighbor knocked on the
• 4:40
  Speaker 13: door and he said, neighbor, you need to leave. I said,
• 4:43
  Speaker 13: I'm not leaving my home. He said, you have to leave.
• 4:45
  Speaker 13: I said, well, no, the water will subside. He said, neighbor,
• 4:50
  Speaker 13: the canals.
• 4:50
  Speaker 5: Are overflowing the street. First of all, when the floods came,
• 4:56
  Speaker 5: the hurricane came through Katrina and the levee broke, emotionally
• 5:00
  Speaker 5: it was devastating. to this nation. We were all shocked.
• 5:06
  Speaker 5: I was personally horrified, mortified by the fact that my
• 5:10
  Speaker 5: mother's from Alabama, my father's from Mississippi. I've got cousins
• 5:13
  Speaker 5: and relatives all down through that area. I've got 7,000
• 5:17
  Speaker 5: partners down in that area. I just wanted help right away,
• 5:23
  Speaker 5: right away, any means possible, help right away. I tend
• 5:26
  Speaker 5: to be solution-oriented. So I stepped into it, raising money
• 5:30
  Speaker 5: as quickly as possible, sending trucks out within 24 hours,
• 5:35
  Speaker 5: sending water and food and ice to people that were
• 5:38
  Speaker 5: in trouble.
• 5:39
  Speaker 13: So Tuesday morning, I'm standing out and I'm looking around
• 5:44
  Speaker 13: my neighborhood and it is covered with water. Some areas,
• 5:51
  Speaker 13: maybe six feet already the next day. We had no food,
• 5:57
  Speaker 13: no water, and it wasn't of our background and our
• 6:01
  Speaker 13: Christian upbringing to Luke. And my daughter said, we're gonna die, mommy.
• 6:12
  Speaker 13: I said, no, we're not gonna die. God is gonna
• 6:15
  Speaker 13: provide for us.
• 6:18
  Speaker 5: They were afraid, they were traumatized, and we were hugging
• 6:22
  Speaker 5: and crying and walking through the facilities with the mayor
• 6:25
  Speaker 5: and trying to see what could be done. Really trying
• 6:29
  Speaker 5: to make a difference.
• 6:30
  Speaker 13: They were showing the film footage of Bishop Jakes and
• 6:33
  Speaker 13: the Potter's house getting in. You know, I was giving
• 6:36
  Speaker 13: testimony to the people that I was with and those
• 6:38
  Speaker 13: that were around me that I thank God for him
• 6:42
  Speaker 13: yielding himself because he didn't have to do that.
• 6:46
  Speaker 5: In the aftermath of Katrina, maybe we do get the
• 6:49
  Speaker 5: houses built and maybe we do get the apartments back
• 6:52
  Speaker 5: in place. Who's building back the hearts of people? who
• 6:55
  Speaker 5: have been emotionally traumatized. I was able to go in
• 6:58
  Speaker 5: with the American Association of Christian Counselors and to bring
• 7:02
  Speaker 5: in help and education and information and some sort of
• 7:06
  Speaker 5: support to people who have been traumatized, just to say
• 7:10
  Speaker 5: that we care.

  Speaker 13: It's always a message of hope, encouragement. It's one thing
• 7:20
  Speaker 13: for you or I to say, oh, you can make it,
• 7:23
  Speaker 13: but When he takes it and he expounds the word
• 7:27
  Speaker 13: and the words that are in the Bible lift off
• 7:30
  Speaker 13: the page and they become, as I say, engrafted into

  Speaker 13: your heart, it gives you hope. It gives you encouragement

  Speaker 13: to know that it doesn't matter what situation that you're in,
• 7:40
  Speaker 13: whether it's a Katrina, a Rita, a William, a Wilma,

  Speaker 13: a 9-11, that this word can give you hope to
• 7:48
  Speaker 13: move on and go on in your life.

  Speaker 12: In 1989, we experienced the coldest winter that.

  Speaker 1: New Orleans ever had. And do you know what?

  Speaker 14: In 1989, it got so cold, I could hear my

  Speaker 14: palm trees say, I'm out of here.

  Speaker 12: I know you like me. I know you appreciate me.

  Speaker 12: I see you driving by. But it's just too cold.

  Speaker 12: And my poor palm trees died. But guess what, people

  Speaker 1: Right across the street was an old oak tree.

  Speaker 12: And no matter how cold it got, no matter how.

  Speaker 1: Much the wind blew.

  Speaker 1: The oak tree kept on standing.

  Speaker 12: I could hear the oak trees say, hey, New Orleans cold,

  Speaker 12: you ain't about nothing. I got some cousin oak trees

  Speaker 12: in Detroit. I got some cousin oak.

  Speaker 1: Trees in Chicago. Your cold ain't.

  Speaker 12: About nothing because I have been through all the seas.

  Speaker 12: I stopped by to tell you, people of God, you

  Speaker 12: may not know what's happening in your life.

  Speaker 1: And that's why I want you to know it's only

  Speaker 12: started pastoring in New Orleans in 1975, and I moved

  Speaker 12: from Windsor, Ontario, Canada to New Orleans, I must confess.

  Speaker 1: Was a palm tree.

  Speaker 12: I wasn't used to all the seasons. I was covered.

  Speaker 1: My family covered me. me. I was sheltered. And everybody said,

  Speaker 12: People started talking about me. And in New Orleans, it

  Speaker 12: don't even have to be in the newspaper. It don't

  Speaker 12: even have to be on the news, baby. But when

  Speaker 12: people get something, man, they just build on it and

  Speaker 12: they just keep on lying. And oh, I got so

  Speaker 12: discouraged because I was trying to be the best pastor

  Speaker 12: that I could. And I'd go in my room and say, Lord,

  Speaker 12: I don't know why these people just talk about me.

  Speaker 12: I'm trying to do my best, Lord. And I'm trying

  Speaker 12: to live right. And I'm trying to do what you

  Speaker 12: told me to do. Why are these people talking about me?

  Speaker 12: But my enemies made one mistake. They kept talking about me.
