- 1:40Speaker 2: The story you were about to hear is true. The
- 1:42Speaker 2: names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're a
- 1:53Speaker 2: detective sergeant. You're assigned a personnel division. A resident of
- 1:58Speaker 2: your city files a report of assault and battery. His
- 2:01Speaker 2: shoulder is dislocated. He's been badly beaten. He claims his
- 2:05Speaker 2: assailant was a young police officer. Your job investigate.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Dragnet the document a drama of an actual crime. For
- 2:22Speaker 3: the next thirty minutes. In cooperation with the Los Angeles
- 2:25Speaker 3: Police Department, you will travel step by step on the
- 2:28Speaker 3: side of the law through an actual case transcribed from
- 2:31Speaker 3: official police violence. From beginning to end, from crime to punishment,
- 2:36Speaker 3: Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:44Speaker 4: It was Tuesday, June eleventh. That was mild in Los Angeles.
- 2:47Speaker 4: We were working the day Watch out of BIA. My
- 2:49Speaker 4: partner's said Jacobs. The boss's Lieutenant Jesse. My name is Friday.
- 2:52Speaker 4: It was ten twenty three am when I got to
- 2:54Speaker 4: ROM eighty three Squadron.
- 2:58Speaker 5: No, you catch up with a lieutenant.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Yeah, in a meeting, said he'd be out about eleven thirty.
- 3:01Speaker 4: He wants us to handle it for the time being.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Uh oh, Joe, this is Officer Blanchet. Is my partner,
- 3:06Speaker 5: Joe Friday.
- 3:07Speaker 6: I'm glad to know you're Friday. I think I've seen
- 3:08Speaker 6: you're on Central a couple of times.
- 3:10Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, how are you? What's this thing all about?
- 3:12Speaker 7: Do you mind telling me you worked yesterday?
- 3:14Speaker 5: Did you?
- 3:15Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 3:15Speaker 5: That's right, my regular beat south Central area.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Anything out of the ordinary happened while you were on duty?
- 3:20Speaker 6: No, not much. Made a couple of pinches, that's about all.
- 3:22Speaker 6: Pretty quiet Otherwise, did.
- 3:24Speaker 4: You make one of those arrests at seven nine two
- 3:26Speaker 4: eight Cortland Avenue.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, woman, Two men users, all three of
- 3:30Speaker 6: them were booked in violation State Narcotics Act.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Any of the three familiar to you at all? Blanchet?
- 3:35Speaker 6: I mean, had you ever seen him before the time
- 3:36Speaker 6: he arrested him? No, none of them. I knew the place, though,
- 3:39Speaker 6: I've been keeping an eye on it lately. One of
- 3:41Speaker 6: those old fashioned homes converted into a rooming house.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Uh huh.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I've been noticing some of the people going in and
- 3:46Speaker 6: out of the place. They didn't look too good to me.
- 3:47Speaker 6: That's why I say I've been keeping an eye on
- 3:49Speaker 6: the house. And what's the story on this?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Anyway?
- 3:51Speaker 5: You get a kickback and out of the rest I made. Well,
- 3:53Speaker 5: we'd like to have your version of it first, Blanchet,
- 3:55Speaker 5: Exactly what happened? How'd you come to make the pinch? Well?
- 3:59Speaker 6: I was walking my regular beat. I think it was
- 4:01Speaker 6: about three thirty yesterday afternoon. I was going along Cortland
- 4:04Speaker 6: the seventy nine hundred block. A woman came out of
- 4:06Speaker 6: the front door and hailed me. She complained about a
- 4:08Speaker 6: five or seven party in the house couple of doors
- 4:10Speaker 6: down the street, and.
- 4:11Speaker 4: That was at number seven nine two eight, the boarding house.
- 4:13Speaker 7: Ah yeah, I checked it out. The party was going
- 4:16Speaker 7: on up on the third floor. I went up, found
- 4:18Speaker 7: the girl and the two men in the room facing
- 4:20Speaker 7: on the street. The girl was fixing a pop for
- 4:22Speaker 7: herself when I came in two caps of heroin on
- 4:24Speaker 7: the table in front of her.
- 4:26Speaker 4: What'd you do?
- 4:26Speaker 5: Then?
- 4:27Speaker 7: I made a grab for the two caps. One of
- 4:29Speaker 7: the guys beat me to it. He got him, ran
- 4:31Speaker 7: to the next room and tried to flush him down
- 4:32Speaker 7: the drain. He didn't quite make it, though, I got
- 4:35Speaker 7: one of the caps before he could.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Get rid of it. What'd you do?
- 4:37Speaker 6: Then blanted and I sat to three of them down,
- 4:39Speaker 6: called into the office. I checked the room over while
- 4:42Speaker 6: we were waiting, found two more caps of heroin, usual
- 4:44Speaker 6: equipment to go with it. When the radio car showed up,
- 4:48Speaker 6: the three of them were taken downtown and narcotic squad
- 4:50Speaker 6: and booked.
- 4:51Speaker 4: So all I can tell you about well, during the
- 4:52Speaker 4: time you were waiting there in the room, Blanche, did
- 4:55Speaker 4: you have any trouble with this aspects at all?
- 4:57Speaker 5: I got a lot of talk from one of the men.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Fellow by the name of Ebba, he's supposed to run
- 5:01Speaker 6: the boarding house, claims he didn't have anything to.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Do with it. He didn't know. The girl was a hype,
- 5:05Speaker 5: you know, the usual stuff, and that was the extent
- 5:07Speaker 5: of it. Just tough.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Sure, that's all. Why, well, that's not the story. According
- 5:11Speaker 4: to Evans, he had his lawyer bail him out last night.
- 5:13Speaker 4: He was in the file charges against you.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Huh, what do you mean?
- 5:17Speaker 4: Salt and battery. He claims that you worked him over
- 5:19Speaker 4: for no reason at all. He says you beat him
- 5:21Speaker 4: up and dislocated his shoulder.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Oh, he's crazy, he's lying. I didn't work him over all.
- 5:25Speaker 4: He says, he's got witnesses to prove it. Blanchard. The
- 5:27Speaker 4: two people who were with him, the woman the other man,
- 5:29Speaker 4: he says elsewhere, that's what you did.
- 5:31Speaker 7: But it's not true. They're trying to cook up a frame.
- 5:33Speaker 7: I didn't touch any of them.
- 5:34Speaker 5: We lis. Evans looked like he's been messed up, cuts
- 5:36Speaker 5: and bruises all over his face, his shoulders fairly recent too.
- 5:39Speaker 6: I know that, but I didn't do it. He was
- 5:41Speaker 6: in the same shape when I found him up in
- 5:43Speaker 6: that room yesterday. Matter of fact, I asked him about it.
- 5:45Speaker 6: He wouldn't tell me. It's a truth, Sergeant so helped me.
- 5:48Speaker 6: All three of them are lying. I didn't beat him up.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Mel's your word against theirs, Blanchard. The facts seemed to
- 5:52Speaker 4: favor Evans.
- 5:53Speaker 6: I don't get this at all. Two of those people
- 5:55Speaker 6: are known hypes. State swear anything for a free cap.
- 5:58Speaker 6: You know that what good is their word?
- 5:59Speaker 5: No good at all. It's not up to est to decide.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Eavans filed to complaint to our job to follow through.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Now you're sure about the shape Evans was in when
- 6:06Speaker 4: you found him up in that room yesterday, Blanched. He
- 6:08Speaker 4: was already marked up, Is that right?
- 6:09Speaker 5: I'm sure he was. I told you I asked him
- 6:11Speaker 5: about it. He wouldn't answer me.
- 6:12Speaker 4: But you had no way of proving that you couldn't
- 6:14Speaker 4: possibly have been responsible for it.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Well, it's up to him, isn't it. Evans? He says,
- 6:18Speaker 5: I worked him over. Let him prove it.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Well, praid he's got to jump there. Two witnesses. Yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 7: but they're lying. You must know that they're lying.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Well, now, look, you can see the position puts us in.
- 6:27Speaker 4: If you're innocent, we're going to do all we can.
- 6:28Speaker 4: If you're guilty, will see that you get everything that's
- 6:30Speaker 4: coming to you.
- 6:31Speaker 6: You know it as well as I do. Sergeant, I
- 6:33Speaker 6: had no reason to beat him up.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I didn't do it.
- 6:35Speaker 7: It's not up to test Blanche. You the court will
- 6:36Speaker 7: have to decide. Doesn't make sense, none of a test.
- 6:39Speaker 5: There's no other way to handle it. We got forty
- 6:41Speaker 5: five hundred men in the department. We don't claim they're
- 6:43Speaker 5: all saints. Once in a while, when them turns bed
- 6:44Speaker 5: and all of us get a black guy hearing a
- 6:46Speaker 5: jam Blanchard like anyone else, you'll get a fair trial. Yeah, well,
- 6:50Speaker 5: what happens now? Do I draw suspension?
- 6:52Speaker 4: Yeah? That's right. If you're clear to the charges in court,
- 6:54Speaker 4: they'll be a hearing before the border.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Writes, Am I through right now?
- 6:58Speaker 4: We left the bookie in at the main jail. Care
- 7:00Speaker 4: to be presented at DA's office.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Tomorrow doesn't make sense. I had no reason to beat
- 7:05Speaker 5: up Evans, no reason at all. You sure that I am?
- 7:08Speaker 5: What do you mean, of course, I'm sure. Well, Evans
- 7:09Speaker 5: claims you did have a reason, a good one.
- 7:11Speaker 4: What he says, you handed him a proposition he wouldn't
- 7:13Speaker 4: go for, so you worked him over.
- 7:14Speaker 5: What do you mean, what kind of a propos of
- 7:16Speaker 5: bad kind? Huh?
- 7:17Speaker 4: He says, you wanted to pay off. Investigating charges against
- 7:23Speaker 4: a police officer involves exactly the same procedure as cases
- 7:26Speaker 4: where private citizens are concerned, prove the suspect innocent or guilty.
- 7:31Speaker 4: If Blanchard was innocent, it wasn't going to be an
- 7:33Speaker 4: easy job proving it. If he hadn't beat up the complainant,
- 7:36Speaker 4: George Evans and dislocated his shoulder, it seemed the only
- 7:38Speaker 4: way out would be to find the man who did
- 7:41Speaker 4: either that or proved that the two witnesses Evans had
- 7:43Speaker 4: come up with were lying. If Blanchard was guilty, if
- 7:47Speaker 4: he actually had slugged and beaten Evans, we had to
- 7:49Speaker 4: find sufficient evidence, and we had to find a motive.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Eleven ten am ed and I took Officer Harry Blanchard
- 7:55Speaker 4: over to the main jail where he was booked in
- 7:57Speaker 4: and lodged in one of the cell blocks. Went upstairs
- 8:00Speaker 4: to the Women's jail, where we interviewed one of the
- 8:02Speaker 4: witnesses to the alleged beating and Eleanor Rowland. She'd had
- 8:06Speaker 4: previous arrests for vagrancy, grand theft, auto and petty theft,
- 8:09Speaker 4: as well as an established reputation as a user of narcotics.
- 8:13Speaker 4: She was twenty three years old.
- 8:14Speaker 8: Yeah, it was terrible that cop really roughed him up,
- 8:16Speaker 8: Pearl Evans. Cop didn't have to treat him like that.
- 8:19Speaker 5: How long have you known George Evans, miss Rowland your
- 8:21Speaker 5: old friends?
- 8:21Speaker 8: No, I wouldn't say that. I met him a couple
- 8:23Speaker 8: of weeks ago when I came down from the.
- 8:24Speaker 4: North San Francisco, Portland.
- 8:26Speaker 8: I was visiting up there. I'm a Portland girl originally.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Well, how about this other man you were with at
- 8:29Speaker 4: the time Officer Blanche had picked you up? Is Ray Sherman?
- 8:32Speaker 4: He and old friend Buster.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Yeah, I've known him a few years.
- 8:34Speaker 5: You know Evans very well.
- 8:35Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess she could say that Ray's had a
- 8:37Speaker 8: room at the boarding house a couple of years. I
- 8:39Speaker 8: guess he's good friends with Evans. Say can I ask
- 8:42Speaker 8: you something? You ever worked narcotics up in Portland?
- 8:45Speaker 9: Oh?
- 8:45Speaker 5: Man never had.
- 8:46Speaker 8: Hm, face is familiar. Could have sworn I mitched in Portland?
- 8:49Speaker 4: Do you want to run over that story again for us?
- 8:51Speaker 4: Miss Rowland, about what happened yesterday?
- 8:53Speaker 8: Much to say, just as soon as I told you.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Usually stay at evans rooming house when you're in town to.
- 8:57Speaker 8: No, it's only the second time I was there.
- 8:59Speaker 5: How about George was either at the time?
- 9:01Speaker 8: No?
- 9:01Speaker 5: Not.
- 9:01Speaker 8: First me and Buster had a pop and then we
- 9:03Speaker 8: sat around the top. Evans came in a little later.
- 9:07Speaker 8: Three of us talked, told him me and Buster not
- 9:09Speaker 8: to bring any more junk in the house. He didn't
- 9:10Speaker 8: want to get into trouble. Then speak of the devil.
- 9:13Speaker 8: A cop walked in.
- 9:14Speaker 4: What happened?
- 9:14Speaker 8: Then Buster grabbed two caps off the table, tried to
- 9:17Speaker 8: get rid of him. He only got rid of one,
- 9:19Speaker 8: though the cop got the other one.
- 9:20Speaker 4: How the argument start to remember that between Evans and
- 9:22Speaker 4: the officer.
- 9:22Speaker 8: I mean, well, I was a little high at the time.
- 9:24Speaker 8: I don't remember word for word. Heavens said he didn't
- 9:27Speaker 8: have anything to do with it, but the cop kept
- 9:29Speaker 8: pressing him. He told Evans he'd forget about it if
- 9:32Speaker 8: Evans would pay him off. Evans told him, no, we
- 9:34Speaker 8: wouldn't give him a cent, and then the cop started
- 9:36Speaker 8: beating him up.
- 9:36Speaker 5: You were in the same room with them all this time.
- 9:38Speaker 8: Yeah, bustering me. We saw it all, peorl. Evans. He
- 9:40Speaker 8: really got worked over. Cop didn't have to treat him
- 9:43Speaker 8: like that. Say are you sure you're not from Portland?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, I'm sure. Now about how many times would
- 9:47Speaker 5: you say the officer hit Evans?
- 9:49Speaker 8: I couldn't tell you that exactly dozens of times, I guess,
- 9:51Speaker 8: kept hitting him with his fists, pushed him all around
- 9:53Speaker 8: the room. I was a little high at the time.
- 9:55Speaker 8: I don't remember everything exactly. Sure could use a booster.
- 9:58Speaker 4: About now, are you sure about it? Meaning you've told us,
- 10:00Speaker 4: miss Rowland that's the truth?
- 10:01Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. Some of the details I didn't remember
- 10:04Speaker 8: so well. He straightened it out for me, though. He
- 10:06Speaker 8: told me just what happened. Who's that George Evans?
- 10:13Speaker 4: Eleven fifty am ed and I continued questioning Eleanor Rowland.
- 10:17Speaker 4: The more we talked to her, the more we were
- 10:18Speaker 4: convinced that at the time of the alleged beating, she
- 10:20Speaker 4: was under a heavy dose of narcotics and that for
- 10:23Speaker 4: the most part, she picked up her version of the
- 10:25Speaker 4: story from the alleged victim, George Evans. We went down
- 10:28Speaker 4: to the second floor of the main jail to one
- 10:30Speaker 4: of the interview rooms, where we talked to the second witness,
- 10:32Speaker 4: Ray Sherman alias Tom Raymond, alias Buster Raymond. He also
- 10:37Speaker 4: had a long record as a user of narcotics. He
- 10:39Speaker 4: gave the same general version of the incident as the
- 10:41Speaker 4: Roland girl did, but despite the girl's story, he claimed
- 10:45Speaker 4: he was not under the influence of narcotics at the time.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Officer Blanchard entered the Roman made the arrests. Besides that,
- 10:51Speaker 4: there were other discrepancies. One o five pm, we had
- 10:54Speaker 4: some lunch at the Federal Cafe and then we drove
- 10:56Speaker 4: out to interview the complainant in the case, George Evans.
- 11:00Speaker 4: After checking at his rooming house, we finally located him
- 11:02Speaker 4: in a neighborhood bowling alley. He was sitting at a
- 11:05Speaker 4: bar joining the actual playing area, drinking a bottle of beer.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Parts of his face and neck were bandaged and his
- 11:10Speaker 4: left shoulder was in a cast. He appeared friendly and cooperative.
- 11:14Speaker 7: I kept telling the cop I didn't have any money,
- 11:16Speaker 7: told him wouldn't give him a payoff.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Even if I did so, he started working you over that, right, Evans, Yes,
- 11:20Speaker 5: that's right.
- 11:21Speaker 7: I don't have anything against cops normally, but this guy,
- 11:23Speaker 7: that's something else.
- 11:24Speaker 5: How do you ever get in the forest anyway?
- 11:26Speaker 4: Had you ever had any contact with Officer Blanchard before yesterday?
- 11:29Speaker 10: Evans?
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yes?
- 11:29Speaker 7: I did twice before came to the house. Accused me
- 11:32Speaker 7: of running a hideout for thieves junkies. Tried to get
- 11:34Speaker 7: me to pay him off then too.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I wouldn't do it. So when was that Evans? About
- 11:37Speaker 5: six eight months ago? Yeah, at least that.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Well, how was it you didn't report Blanchard? Then?
- 11:42Speaker 7: Well let him wantn't caused any trouble, get mixed up
- 11:43Speaker 7: in a law case. I figured I could take care
- 11:45Speaker 7: of myself. But after that, going over yesterday, that was
- 11:48Speaker 7: enough for me. I don't understand how the guy ever
- 11:50Speaker 7: made the force to begin with. Aw the matter shoulder
- 11:54Speaker 7: of mine, he really tore it apart.
- 11:56Speaker 4: I'll just spend your time yesterday, Evans. Do you mind
- 11:58Speaker 4: telling us?
- 11:58Speaker 5: No, I don't mind.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Slept till about half past twelve one o'clock, had a
- 12:02Speaker 7: little bit of a hangover, and I got up and
- 12:05Speaker 7: made some breakfast and read the paper.
- 12:06Speaker 5: That's about size. I mean you were in your room
- 12:08Speaker 5: all day after the time he went down the hall
- 12:09Speaker 5: to Race Shermon's room. That's right. Ray was there with
- 12:12Speaker 5: this girlfriend of his, Eleanor. I didn't know she was
- 12:15Speaker 5: a hype.
- 12:15Speaker 7: That's the truth. Ray should have known him better having
- 12:17Speaker 7: her there. I don't like the kind of stuff going
- 12:19Speaker 7: on on place.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Now.
- 12:20Speaker 4: We've checked you through the recond Bureau Evans. There's been
- 12:22Speaker 4: three or four similar cases at your places the last
- 12:24Speaker 4: few years. Hasn't there a couple?
- 12:26Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a real problem. I don't know how you
- 12:28Speaker 7: keep him out the whole neighborhood around here. You know,
- 12:30Speaker 7: pretty hard to stop it.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I guess we understand you were in the room there
- 12:33Speaker 4: while the girl helped herself to a fix. Is that right?
- 12:35Speaker 7: No, I wasn't in the room when she took the fix.
- 12:37Speaker 7: I got there a couple of minutes after. I didn't
- 12:39Speaker 7: even know what was going on. You could ask Gray
- 12:40Speaker 7: Sherman the girl too. Let'll tell you I wasn't there.
- 12:42Speaker 7: That's something else we wanted to ask you about. Sherman
- 12:44Speaker 7: and the girl.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Don't seem too sure there are stories, can you straighten
- 12:46Speaker 5: us out there? What do you mean, Oh, Sherman tells
- 12:48Speaker 5: us one thing, A girl tells us something else. Can't
- 12:50Speaker 5: seem to get together.
- 12:51Speaker 4: But I told him, he told him what?
- 12:52Speaker 5: Well, nothing, I told him. I told the truth. That's
- 12:54Speaker 5: all that stupid ray. He doesn't know half the time
- 12:56Speaker 5: what he's doing.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Well, it doesn't make it much of a witness in,
- 12:59Speaker 4: does it.
- 12:59Speaker 5: What do you mean he was there when that cop
- 13:01Speaker 5: slugged me beat me up? You could see that much. Well,
- 13:03Speaker 5: that's just it. We're not sure he did.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Huh.
- 13:04Speaker 5: The girl says, Blanche would work you over in the
- 13:06Speaker 5: living room. There, Sherman says, Blanche took you out in
- 13:08Speaker 5: the kitchen and beat you up. Now, which is it?
- 13:10Speaker 5: I think I'm beginning to get the pitch.
- 13:12Speaker 4: How's that you're out to cover up with that cop?
- 13:14Speaker 5: Is that it? Take care of your own.
- 13:15Speaker 4: We're designing to investigate this thing, Evans, just like any
- 13:17Speaker 4: other criminal case. Blanche is not getting any more of
- 13:19Speaker 4: a break than any other suspect would.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Yeah. Sure, we still haven't asked our question. Where did
- 13:23Speaker 5: it happened? Living room, my kitchen?
- 13:24Speaker 7: The interview's all over, Sergeant, I got the pitch. You
- 13:26Speaker 7: can take this back to your office. I'm going to
- 13:28Speaker 7: get that cop convicted. It's the last thing I do.
- 13:30Speaker 5: You can count on that.
- 13:31Speaker 4: What's the matter, Evans? All we did was ask you
- 13:32Speaker 4: a simple question.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Don't try to kid me, Sergeant. I got the angle.
- 13:35Speaker 5: You're trying for a cover up. Okay, go ahead and
- 13:37Speaker 5: try now.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Look, why don't you snap out of it, mister. Nobody's
- 13:39Speaker 4: trying to cover up unless it's you. Sherman and the
- 13:41Speaker 4: girl are your witnesses. Some of the points of their
- 13:43Speaker 4: stories don't check out. We want to clear them up.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Does that sound unreasonable?
- 13:45Speaker 5: I told you, Sergeant, it's no use. I got your angle.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Answer me one more thing, Evans. You're on your own.
- 13:49Speaker 5: I'm telling you nothing.
- 13:50Speaker 7: Who was a doctor that treated you after you were
- 13:52Speaker 7: beating up down at Georgia Street?
- 13:54Speaker 5: There, merchant? See you ort to know that now? I
- 13:55Speaker 5: mean for your shoulder. We checked over your car down
- 13:57Speaker 5: at Georgia Street, and no mention there a dislocated shouldern nose.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I didn't even know I had one till I was
- 14:01Speaker 5: bailed out. I had mowned doctor.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Fix you mind giving us his name?
- 14:04Speaker 5: Why should I? I was willing to go along cooperate.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Then you started playing a cage. You're trying to cover
- 14:08Speaker 5: up for that cop. Now you work it out in
- 14:09Speaker 5: your own.
- 14:10Speaker 4: All right, mister, anyway you want it, you bet that's the.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Way I want it. You had this whole thing fram
- 14:14Speaker 5: from the beginning.
- 14:14Speaker 4: You're off the track, Evans.
- 14:15Speaker 5: You're not kidding me. You're trying to prove that cops
- 14:17Speaker 5: inisen trying to make me out a liar. What am
- 14:19Speaker 5: I supposed to do to help you prove I'm a liar?
- 14:20Speaker 4: Now you helped enough already, ED and I double checked
- 14:27Speaker 4: through Officer Blanchet's departmental record. It showed that Blanchet had
- 14:30Speaker 4: been working his present beat for a little more than
- 14:32Speaker 4: four months. Evans had told us that Blanchard allegedly had
- 14:35Speaker 4: solicited payoffs from him at least six to eight months before.
- 14:39Speaker 4: The following day, ED and I made further inquiries in
- 14:42Speaker 4: the neighborhood of evans rooming house and also among his
- 14:44Speaker 4: friends and associates. For one thing, we found out that
- 14:46Speaker 4: Evans had not spent the entire morning and early afternoon
- 14:49Speaker 4: in the house. He'd been seen leaving his place by
- 14:52Speaker 4: several neighbors at about ten AM. Through one of his contacts.
- 14:56Speaker 4: We got the address of an ex wife since remarried,
- 14:59Speaker 4: and Marie Evans A. We located her in a small
- 15:02Speaker 4: apartment in the East Wiltshire district, a small brunette woman
- 15:04Speaker 4: about thirty five.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Now, you tell her she used to be married to Evan, Yah,
- 15:07Speaker 5: that's right. Well what kind of business was Evans in
- 15:09Speaker 5: when you were married to him, ma'am?
- 15:10Speaker 9: Well we had that rooming house over on Courtland.
- 15:12Speaker 4: That's what we know about that. Was there anything else?
- 15:14Speaker 9: Well, I don't know.
- 15:15Speaker 4: It does matter anyway, just a routine investigation. We'd like
- 15:17Speaker 4: to have as much background on him as you can remember.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Are you on fairly good terms with Evans?
- 15:21Speaker 5: Now?
- 15:21Speaker 9: No?
- 15:21Speaker 10: I haven't seen him since we split up about you
- 15:23Speaker 10: and a half ago. I think that's why I couldn't.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Stand what was the trouble? Mammy mind telling us just asn't.
- 15:28Speaker 10: Much good, that's all. I find a lot of names
- 15:30Speaker 10: to fit him. He was in everything by me. That's
- 15:32Speaker 10: why I got away from him. Every cheap, lousy racket
- 15:34Speaker 10: I can think of, he was in it, pedland, dope, blackmail,
- 15:37Speaker 10: making the book, some of the two bit rackets.
- 15:39Speaker 9: He's been in all of them. One after the other.
- 15:41Speaker 9: I had to get away.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Rooming house on Courtland Avenue. That's he's been operating all this.
- 15:45Speaker 9: Time, as long as I've known him, Yeah, about three years.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I'd say, is narcotics just a sideline with him? Or
- 15:50Speaker 4: does he go in for it pretty heavy?
- 15:52Speaker 9: He was in it pretty heavy when I left him.
- 15:53Speaker 9: I know what he's been doing since. I don't care.
- 15:56Speaker 9: I soon forget all about it.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Yes, man, m I can understand.
- 15:59Speaker 9: What's the matter. Now, go to a case against him, Well.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Not exactly. Evans is filed against the police officer, assault
- 16:03Speaker 5: and batteries. So listening and bribe, we're investigating the charges.
- 16:06Speaker 9: Sounds like him some coup really rough him up.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Oh we don't know, ma'am. That's what we're trying to
- 16:10Speaker 4: find out.
- 16:12Speaker 9: I don't like to help you out. I don't think
- 16:14Speaker 9: I can.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Well, just one more question, ma'am. Why you were married
- 16:17Speaker 4: to Evans? Did you have a family doctor, I mean
- 16:19Speaker 4: one that you called regularly when you were sick? Yeah?
- 16:21Speaker 9: We did.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Why What was his name? Can you remember?
- 16:23Speaker 9: Yeah? Doctor Chase. Do you like his address?
- 16:29Speaker 4: Two forty seven pm. We got to doctor Chase's office,
- 16:32Speaker 4: and luckily we found him in.
- 16:35Speaker 5: Say a look at this magazine, Joe, Well, National Geographic
- 16:38Speaker 5: looks like a real old one when you say.
- 16:40Speaker 4: It sure does covers torn offer.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Yeah, what do you know about? That's older? Or I
- 16:46Speaker 5: thought look good?
- 16:47Speaker 4: This yere? What do you got his pictures?
- 16:49Speaker 5: There? Look four pages of him? Pretty grand affair. Huh yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 5: Teddy Rose felt breaks ground for Panama Canal. How about that?
- 16:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:00Speaker 5: Already keep you waiting, gentlemen.
- 17:01Speaker 4: That's perfectly all right. Doctor.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Let's see how you want to know about mister Evans,
- 17:06Speaker 5: Doctor George Evans.
- 17:07Speaker 11: Oh, yes, Evans. What wasn't exactly sergeant? What'd you have
- 17:10Speaker 11: in mind?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Well, the first thing we'd like to know is if
- 17:12Speaker 4: you've treated Evans recently, the last week or so.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Yes, as a matter of fact, I have.
- 17:16Speaker 11: And he was in here well if I see now,
- 17:21Speaker 11: let's see, yes, I thought so. He was in here
- 17:25Speaker 11: three days ago. I had some bad cuts and bruises.
- 17:28Speaker 11: They'd already been treated, though there wasn't much.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I could do. Was there anything else wrong with him? Doctor? No?
- 17:33Speaker 10: Not.
- 17:34Speaker 11: Actually I examined his shoulder. He insisted it hurt him.
- 17:37Speaker 11: He wanted me to put it in the cast.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You put the cast on did you.
- 17:40Speaker 11: Well, there really wasn't any need for it, but I
- 17:42Speaker 11: put it on anyway, a little bit of psychiatry so
- 17:45Speaker 11: to make him feel better. Well, honey, mean, doctor, was
- 17:47Speaker 11: my need for it? Just one of those peculiar things.
- 17:50Speaker 11: I've been treating Evans for some time.
- 17:51Speaker 10: You know.
- 17:52Speaker 11: Yeah, So that's what we understand. It's fairly unusual, hardly
- 17:55Speaker 11: a rare case, though. I suppose you might call it
- 17:58Speaker 11: a trick. Shoulder looks as if it might be dislocated,
- 18:01Speaker 11: but it actually isn't. I think it's voluntary.
- 18:04Speaker 4: You mean he could do this thing himself.
- 18:05Speaker 11: Oh, yes, she can make it appear dislocated anytime he wants.
- 18:19Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 18:23Speaker 3: force and action.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Saturday, June fifteenth, ten am, the investigation continued. Meantime, the
- 18:37Speaker 4: newspapers were still making front page material out of the story.
- 18:40Speaker 4: One of the morning banner lines read cop slugs crippled
- 18:44Speaker 4: citizen to get payoff, and another one police brutality rouses
- 18:47Speaker 4: entire city. Our investigation went on early Saturday afternoon, ed
- 18:52Speaker 4: and I succeeded in locating a former friend of Evans
- 18:54Speaker 4: who told us that he'd seen him downtown the morning
- 18:56Speaker 4: of the day on which the alleged beating had taken place.
- 18:59Speaker 4: The same time, Evans told us he was in bed
- 19:01Speaker 4: nursing a hangover. The former friend of Fred Werner said
- 19:04Speaker 4: Evans was in the company of two known gamblers, Carl
- 19:07Speaker 4: Sweetzer and Stanley Parrish. He told us that he'd spotted
- 19:10Speaker 4: the three of them together at about eleven forty five am.
- 19:13Speaker 4: We questioned Sweetser and Perish, but they refused to tell
- 19:15Speaker 4: us anything. They admitted that they were acquainted with Evans,
- 19:18Speaker 4: but they knew nothing about the beating he'd received. We
- 19:20Speaker 4: continued making the rounds. Five thirty pm we dropped with
- 19:24Speaker 4: the main jail and questioned Evans. Two witnesses again, Ray
- 19:27Speaker 4: Sherman and Eleanor Rowland. We got the same stories as before.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Six eighteen pm we got back to the city hall.
- 19:34Speaker 5: We'll stretcher. IM sure be glad to get home.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Yeah, not a bad day, though he had fair luck.
- 19:38Speaker 5: And I suppose son could always be better. She'd like
- 19:40Speaker 5: to get the straight story one way or the other.
- 19:42Speaker 5: You want to check the book ed see if we
- 19:43Speaker 5: got anything. Oh, okay, not much, Joe all from a
- 19:49Speaker 5: Tom Donnelly you know Donnalley.
- 19:51Speaker 4: No, it didn't sound too familiar to me.
- 19:52Speaker 5: I got it. Personal Jacobs, Isa Alfray, he's gone for
- 19:57Speaker 5: the night. Uh huh no, I'm sorry, wouldn't No, all right,
- 20:01Speaker 5: thank him? Another message here for us Joe in the book. Yeah,
- 20:06Speaker 5: Blanchard's wife again. I'm getting to feel pretty silly about
- 20:09Speaker 5: telling her the same thing that after night. Why don't
- 20:10Speaker 5: you call her tonight?
- 20:11Speaker 4: Well, you've been doing all right? When I give up now?
- 20:16Speaker 4: Personnel Friday? Yeah, what was that.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Your name? Yeah?
- 20:25Speaker 4: Okay, ten o'clock tonight. All right, that's fine and so sure, Yeah,
- 20:31Speaker 4: we'll meet you, okay ten o'clock. Yeah, fine, Bye, sounds
- 20:35Speaker 4: pretty good. What was the name of Martin? Kimbro says
- 20:38Speaker 4: he knows George Evans. He wants to talk to us tonight.
- 20:40Speaker 4: What's a pitch? I don't know. It might be straight,
- 20:42Speaker 4: might not. What'd you say about Evans being worked over?
- 20:44Speaker 4: He claims he knows all about it? Yeah, he says
- 20:46Speaker 4: Blanchard couldn't possibly have done it. Seven oh five pm.
- 20:52Speaker 4: We went over to Frank Kange's place, had some dinner,
- 20:54Speaker 4: and then we drove out to interview the man who'd
- 20:56Speaker 4: identified himself on the phone as Martin kimbro We located
- 20:59Speaker 4: him at the designated meeting place, a small bar just
- 21:02Speaker 4: off Beverly Boulevard and Normandy Avenue. Kimbro was a small man,
- 21:06Speaker 4: slight build, middle aged. He seemed less sure of himself
- 21:09Speaker 4: than he did on the phone. He said that he
- 21:11Speaker 4: knew George Evans fairly well, and that up until six
- 21:14Speaker 4: months before he'd been on good terms with him. He
- 21:16Speaker 4: didn't go into details, but he gave us the general
- 21:18Speaker 4: idea that Evans had cheated him on some business deal
- 21:20Speaker 4: the two of them had been engaged in. We asked
- 21:23Speaker 4: Kimbroe about the beating Evans had taken. He said it
- 21:26Speaker 4: was common knowledge among the people he traveled with that
- 21:28Speaker 4: gamblers Carl Sweezer and Stanley Parrish were responsible for beating
- 21:32Speaker 4: up Evans. He'd welched on a gambling debt and the
- 21:35Speaker 4: two of them had been after him for months to
- 21:37Speaker 4: pay off. He also said he knew a close friend
- 21:39Speaker 4: of the two gamblers who told him that in private,
- 21:42Speaker 4: Carl Sweetzer openly boasted of beating up Evans. According to
- 21:45Speaker 4: kimbro the beating had taken place about one pm the
- 21:48Speaker 4: Monday before the same day, officer Blanchard allegedly had given
- 21:52Speaker 4: him the beating relocated Sweetzer in the coffee shop of
- 21:55Speaker 4: a small hotel on South Rampart Street.
- 21:58Speaker 5: I'm fraid I know which talk about sharg and I
- 22:00Speaker 5: don't know any Georgia emas. I've never heard him. We
- 22:02Speaker 5: understand you do sweets. I heard you used to play
- 22:04Speaker 5: cards with him. Got it from a couple of people,
- 22:05Speaker 5: that's all. I guess they made a mistake. I don't
- 22:07Speaker 5: remember the name at all. Maybe he's going under a
- 22:09Speaker 5: different one.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Huh, Well, how about his description? You ought to remember that?
- 22:12Speaker 5: Well, maybe I meet quite a few people. It's kind
- 22:14Speaker 5: of hard to place all of them, you know, kind
- 22:15Speaker 5: of looked.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Like well, he's tall, dark complexion, dark hair, scar under
- 22:19Speaker 4: his chin. He dresses pretty well, usually wears a suit.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Yeah, does means a thing to me. Runs a rooming
- 22:22Speaker 5: house over on Courtland to Avenue. It's been in quite
- 22:24Speaker 5: a few rackets on and all. Sure, I afraid it
- 22:26Speaker 5: wouldn't know him.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Now. Look, we haven't got any beef with you, sweet soo.
- 22:29Speaker 4: That's not the point. Evans is trying to get away
- 22:30Speaker 4: with the fast when we're out to stop and we
- 22:32Speaker 4: could use your help. How about it?
- 22:33Speaker 5: I don't see how I kind of help you. What's
- 22:35Speaker 5: a beef? Anyway?
- 22:35Speaker 4: We think you know it's been all over the newspapers
- 22:37Speaker 4: the last couple of days.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Oh yeah, a young cop once Evans got against him. Anyway,
- 22:41Speaker 5: I was trying to save face. We figure that's what
- 22:42Speaker 5: we hear anyway? Well, what I mean?
- 22:44Speaker 4: Well, I think you know how Evans likes to play
- 22:46Speaker 4: the big shot. It wouldn't do his stock much good
- 22:47Speaker 4: around town if the real story got out.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I don't follow. What's story you're talking about.
- 22:51Speaker 4: About his welching on a gambling tab getting roughed up.
- 22:53Speaker 4: If he says a cop did it makes him look
- 22:55Speaker 4: a lot better than it. He comes out of it
- 22:56Speaker 4: pretty clean that way down.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Here passes all. Yeah, why you guys, have some coffee?
- 23:00Speaker 5: I hate you along, okay, as soon as the waitress
- 23:01Speaker 5: comes around, all what else you hear about this Evans?
- 23:05Speaker 5: Pretty bad boy? Right, bad enough?
- 23:07Speaker 4: He's got a fast mouth, telling quite a few stories
- 23:09Speaker 4: around the neighborhood.
- 23:10Speaker 5: That's all I might remember him to all the dark
- 23:13Speaker 5: guy arounds the room house.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, you should remember him. He's mentioned you
- 23:16Speaker 4: in a couple of the stories he's passing around. Where'd
- 23:18Speaker 4: you get that? Talking to a fellow last night, he says.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Evans claims that that card game he was in with
- 23:22Speaker 4: you was rigged. That's why he didn't pay you off.
- 23:25Speaker 4: He claims, you and Stan Perry's framed the whole thing.
- 23:27Speaker 5: I still laugh. Huh if only bums are all alike,
- 23:30Speaker 5: lose a couple of dollars and squeal like a pig.
- 23:33Speaker 5: What's this Evans doing? Now? Who's up for a narcotics trap?
- 23:35Speaker 5: He's out on veil funk? What's your stake in this thing?
- 23:38Speaker 4: We're trying to clear the thing up. Apparently Evans figures
- 23:41Speaker 4: he's going to frame the young cop, save face, talk himself.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Out of a bad situation, or what do you want
- 23:45Speaker 5: from me? The truth? I'm not going to talk myself
- 23:48Speaker 5: in a jail, young cop or not, We're not asking
- 23:50Speaker 5: you to. You want to clear the case? Huh? I
- 23:52Speaker 5: only need his proof. The cop didn't give Evans a
- 23:54Speaker 5: working over, that's right, Okay, you got a deal.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Without actually incriminating himself in any way. Carl Sweetzer gave
- 24:04Speaker 4: us information and leads, which, after they were checked out,
- 24:07Speaker 4: showed definitely that George Evans was slugged and beaten in
- 24:09Speaker 4: a neighborhood at least a mile from his rooming house.
- 24:12Speaker 4: We talked to half a dozen people who saw Evans
- 24:14Speaker 4: in that neighborhood. Shortly after one pm the day of
- 24:17Speaker 4: the incident, we talked to the clerk at the drug
- 24:20Speaker 4: store where Evans went to bi iodine and bandages. They
- 24:22Speaker 4: all told us that he bore the markings of a
- 24:24Speaker 4: severe beating as early as one o'clock that afternoon. Evans
- 24:27Speaker 4: had told us repeatedly that he'd received the beating at
- 24:30Speaker 4: the hands of Officer Blanchard no earlier than three or
- 24:32Speaker 4: three fifteen that afternoon. Ed and I drove over to
- 24:35Speaker 4: the main jail, where we interviewed Evans two witnesses again.
- 24:39Speaker 4: The girl Eleanor Rowland was the first to break. She
- 24:42Speaker 4: admitted that Evans had promised both her and her friend
- 24:44Speaker 4: Ray Sherman fifty dollars apiece if they would go along
- 24:47Speaker 4: with him and his plan to frame Officer Blanchard for
- 24:49Speaker 4: assault and battery and soliciting a bride. After an hour
- 24:52Speaker 4: of questioning, Sherman admitted the same thing. We had a
- 24:55Speaker 4: stenographer take their statements. Four fifty pm ed and I
- 24:59Speaker 4: got in the car and drove to the rooming house
- 25:00Speaker 4: on Cortland Avenue.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Yeah, oh h right, sorry, do.
- 25:06Speaker 4: You want to get your coade? Evans like to see
- 25:08Speaker 4: you downtown?
- 25:09Speaker 5: What forwards it about filing a false report? You know
- 25:11Speaker 5: this darning. What are you talking about? What do you
- 25:13Speaker 5: mean a false report?
- 25:14Speaker 4: You've been checked out all over town, Evans, your doctor,
- 25:16Speaker 4: your ex wife, your gambling friends. We talked to them all.
- 25:18Speaker 5: So what what's that prove? Anyway? Proves you were lying?
- 25:20Speaker 5: Mister had the young officer Blanchard, he didn't beat checked.
- 25:23Speaker 5: There's nothing wrong with your shouldery. The doctor Chasell vouch
- 25:25Speaker 5: for that.
- 25:25Speaker 7: I don't care what he says. I don't care what
- 25:27Speaker 7: any of them to say. I got my case against
- 25:28Speaker 7: that cop. I'm sticking with it.
- 25:29Speaker 5: You're not going to talk me.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Why don't you give it up? Evans? We had to
- 25:32Speaker 4: talk with Carl Sweetsert. What do you tell you enough
- 25:34Speaker 4: to convince this you're trying to frame Blanchard. We've got
- 25:36Speaker 4: statements from people who saw you before you got back
- 25:38Speaker 4: home Monday afternoon. They say you were mussed up. Then
- 25:41Speaker 4: that was at one o'clock in the afternoon. You've been
- 25:42Speaker 4: telling us Blanchard wasn't at your place till three o'clock.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Now he explained that, I don't.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Know, Maybe I didn't have the time right My watch
- 25:48Speaker 7: could have been off. Doesn't make any difference anyway. It's
- 25:50Speaker 7: gonna make a lot of difference. How about getting your code.
- 25:52Speaker 7: I'm going to call my lawyer first. That isn't going
- 25:54Speaker 7: to do much good. We've got statements from your two witnesses,
- 25:56Speaker 7: Ray Sherman and the girl.
- 25:57Speaker 4: They've admitted the whole thing. Now, you haven't got.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Much of a case left. I don't care what they say.
- 26:01Speaker 5: They're lying, both of them. They're lyon.
- 26:02Speaker 4: You ought to know, mister, you taught them how.
- 26:12Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:15Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:17Speaker 3: On September, second trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:20Speaker 3: eighty nine, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:23Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, a complaint
- 26:34Speaker 3: was received on George Evans from the City Attorney's office
- 26:37Speaker 3: for violation of section fifty two to forty three Municipal
- 26:40Speaker 3: Code filing a false report to the Police Department of misdemeanor.
- 26:44Speaker 3: He received a sentence of thirty days in the county jail.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Ray Sherman was tried and found guilty of Section eleven thousand,
- 26:50Speaker 3: five hundred Health and Safety Code possession of narcotics. He
- 26:54Speaker 3: was sentenced to one year in the county jail in
- 26:56Speaker 3: three years probation. Eleanor Rowland was filed on as a
- 26:59Speaker 3: vague attic Section eleven seven hundred and twenty one Health
- 27:03Speaker 3: and Safety Code. She was sentenced to sixty days in
- 27:06Speaker 3: the county jail. Officer Harry Blanchard was clear of the
- 27:09Speaker 3: charges pending against him and was reinstated with back pay.
- 27:22Speaker 3: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:25Speaker 3: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:29Speaker 3: Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department
- 27:32Speaker 3: Technical advisors Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Wynne, and Sergeant
- 27:37Speaker 3: Vance Bracer. Heard tonight were Barney Phillips and wit Connor.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Script by Jim Moser, music by Walter Schumann, hal Gidney speaking.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Now It's Counterspy on NBC.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Welcome Back. As the case unfolds, it becomes painfully apparent,
- 28:12Speaker 1: but a big risk that Evans was taking. The two
- 28:17Speaker 1: witnesses he relied upon were junkies, so it's such a
- 28:25Speaker 1: big risk about on them being consistent and sticking to
- 28:29Speaker 1: a story and then throwing in his tricks shoulder as
- 28:34Speaker 1: part of the alleged injury. Clearly he hadn't considered the
- 28:38Speaker 1: degree to which this was going to be investigated. But
- 28:42Speaker 1: he's not some random idiot doing something for no reason.
- 28:47Speaker 1: To him, it was a way to preserve his criminal reputation,
- 28:52Speaker 1: as the gamblers were making an example of him, and
- 28:56Speaker 1: when word got around it would mark him as as
- 29:00Speaker 1: a welcher and it would be just generally bad for
- 29:06Speaker 1: his ability to function in the world of vice he
- 29:10Speaker 1: operated in. And truth be told, even if they had
- 29:15Speaker 1: found his evidence wanting and not enough to prefer charges
- 29:22Speaker 1: against the officer, they would not have probably been able
- 29:26Speaker 1: to bring a charge against him because they still had
- 29:32Speaker 1: the injuries and the witnesses, So it would have ended
- 29:37Speaker 1: up a situation where there was not enough evidence to
- 29:41Speaker 1: charge the officer and he might receive some lesser consequence
- 29:46Speaker 1: because of Evans deceiving them about the trick shoulder that
- 29:53Speaker 1: cast doubt on the entire allegation, But to actually turn
- 29:57Speaker 1: it around and charge them. They needed the cooperation of
- 30:01Speaker 1: the guy who beat Evans up, and I think Evans
- 30:07Speaker 1: probably would have expected that'd be very hard to get.
- 30:10Speaker 1: He would it just be a case where he accused
- 30:13Speaker 1: the officer, nobody got charged, and he just goes around
- 30:17Speaker 1: and saying, yeah, the cops, they just defended their own
- 30:21Speaker 1: and let the guy get off. But yeah, cop beat
- 30:24Speaker 1: me up. Can you believe it? And it's very hard
- 30:27Speaker 1: for the gamblers, yeah, particularly to officially tell their story
- 30:33Speaker 1: because they committed a crime. But then Friday gives them
- 30:38Speaker 1: some incentive because not only did Evans welch on a beat,
- 30:43Speaker 1: which the gamblers are not in the beating people up business.
- 30:48Speaker 1: They are in the taking money from people business. And
- 30:53Speaker 1: if you ignore all their attempts to collect and they
- 30:57Speaker 1: have to physically injure you, that is an effort to
- 31:02Speaker 1: preserve their reputation. That is not what they're in business for.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So the idea that this guy welched and didn't pay
- 31:12Speaker 1: off on his bet, it would have them angry. But
- 31:17Speaker 1: then he learns not only that, but he's been going
- 31:22Speaker 1: around town saying the game he lost the money in
- 31:25Speaker 1: was crooked. Well, that's a reputational harm to the gamblers,
- 31:30Speaker 1: and so he finds a way to cooperate without incriminating himself,
- 31:35Speaker 1: because at this point the police aren't concerned about vice
- 31:40Speaker 1: in particular or some beating that there's no witness to
- 31:44Speaker 1: other than the participants and who Evans wouldn't testify against anyway,
- 31:50Speaker 1: They're concerned about clearing up the involvement of the officer. Now,
- 31:55Speaker 1: one thing I should note is that we don't actually
- 32:00Speaker 1: positively learned from the narration that Friday got that information
- 32:06Speaker 1: that Evans was going around spreading that rumor. The information
- 32:10Speaker 1: he summarizes is very generic. Now, he could have gotten
- 32:15Speaker 1: that information, but technically it's also possible that he came
- 32:21Speaker 1: up with that as a way to get the cooperation
- 32:26Speaker 1: of the man he needed. Understanding that particular psychology. I
- 32:31Speaker 1: also have to note a little bit of absurdity and
- 32:34Speaker 1: dragnet or absurdism, I guess in humor. And that's also
- 32:41Speaker 1: a bit subtle, even while being absurd. And that was
- 32:45Speaker 1: in the doctor's office where Jacobs found the old magazine.
- 32:52Speaker 1: And of course, if you've been in a doctor's office,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and this may change as magazines become less popular, but
- 33:02Speaker 1: you will often find a few years old magazines, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: so they exaggerated this to the max with the Teddy
- 33:10Speaker 1: Roosevelt breaks ground on the Panama Canal. Now, technically, Teddy
- 33:16Speaker 1: Roosevelt did not break ground on the Panama Canal. He
- 33:20Speaker 1: visited the construction site, but the groundbreaking actually occurred in
- 33:25Speaker 1: nineteen oh four, but he visited it in nineteen oh six.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So this takes the idea of old magazines in the
- 33:33Speaker 1: doctor's office to the extreme, as apparently there's a forty
- 33:38Speaker 1: six year old magazine in this office. This would be
- 33:42Speaker 1: like going into your doctor's office and find Today in
- 33:47Speaker 1: twenty twenty six and finding a magazine talking about the
- 33:53Speaker 1: start of the Iran hostage crisis and how President Quarter
- 34:00Speaker 1: is going to handle that. It's a subtle, absurd thing
- 34:04Speaker 1: that you don't expect to find and drag that, But
- 34:07Speaker 1: there it is. Listener comments and feedback now, and we
- 34:10Speaker 1: go to YouTube where Cuthbert two five four six comments
- 34:16Speaker 1: on the Big Honeymoon. Dragnet never gets old. Indeed, even
- 34:21Speaker 1: though magic gauzines and doctor's office do all right. Well,

- 35:12Speaker 12: of just the daily run of problems I have to
- 35:14Speaker 12: face at the office. What do you mean by you know,
- 35:16Speaker 12: you know, people demanding more from their insurance than they deserve,
- 35:19Speaker 12: people filing claims when they aren't entitled in any insurance
- 35:21Speaker 12: at all, and then trying.
- 35:22Speaker 9: To Oh what nothing, Johnny, I just.
- 35:31Speaker 4: I'll be all right.

- 35:47Speaker 6: No, Ray, Johnny say, what's the matter this pepe in
