- 0:29Speaker 1: Nor where you stand with on X For those of
- 0:35Speaker 1: you joining us now, Johann, He's telling us, Uh, people
- 0:39Speaker 1: who think Janice has this glamorous life should know that
- 0:41Speaker 1: Yanni was just explained to us that it is, in
- 0:45Speaker 1: fact possible to do a quick stop at Costco. Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I don't mind doing Costco KEENBA. Costco is the international
- 0:57Speaker 1: shipping Yeah, there is a t Yeah, but you know
- 1:00Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Like you see context containers to say Costco. No,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think it's commonly said both ways. For sure, people
- 1:07Speaker 1: are just speaking of the bat. You're not You're not
- 1:09Speaker 1: hearing me. No, I'm totally hearing you. I know that
- 1:12Speaker 1: there's both out there, and I think when people refer
- 1:14Speaker 1: to Costco, there are lots of people that's just say
- 1:18Speaker 1: Costco and nobody corrects him. My mother's husband, who's your mirror?
- 1:24Speaker 1: I hesitate to call my father in law. So I
- 1:26Speaker 1: feel like I'm a little bit older. No, No, stepdad
- 1:29Speaker 1: that um he calls Barnes and Noble, um books and Nobles,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and he calls him McDonald's and Italian dressing. I was
- 1:41Speaker 1: just saying that you adopted all of that stuff. By
- 1:43Speaker 1: the way, I take everything from him. That as soon
- 1:47Speaker 1: as you got your reader glasses, he took on that stuff.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Do you receive gifts from this man at Christmas? Okay? Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you're you're clear of the stepdad thing. Then something a
- 1:57Speaker 1: little bit old step dad? I think so too, getting
- 2:00Speaker 1: older every day. You guys caught the I didn't send
- 2:04Speaker 1: this to Phil. The finger that had fifteen inches attendant
- 2:07Speaker 1: attached to it was an alarming photograph on ice, the color,
- 2:12Speaker 1: everything about it. I sent it to my wife. She's like,
- 2:15Speaker 1: why are you saying this to me? No, she says,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I don't want to see this, and I said, no
- 2:19Speaker 1: one does. I couldn't figure out what it was. Yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 1: because the tender kind of throws you off. Well, because
- 2:26Speaker 1: we're you know, you talk about finger stories. You get
- 2:29Speaker 1: him in it's self perpetuating as his dad. That's the
- 2:32Speaker 1: guy over in Billings, guy from Billings he's gonna be
- 2:35Speaker 1: at the live show. Um, I don't know why he's
- 2:37Speaker 1: going to this one, but he's going to the to
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Mace of the Phoenix Live show. Is he bringing
- 2:41Speaker 1: the finger? No, I'm gonna talk about what happened to
- 2:44Speaker 1: the finger. He's gonna be at the show. I'm gonna
- 2:46Speaker 1: I think about having him up on stage just to
- 2:47Speaker 1: ask him a couple of quick questions. But his dad
- 2:51Speaker 1: was a welder. Somehow got his finger tore off, and
- 2:56Speaker 1: it tore off fifteen inches attendant. Yeah, if you've ever
- 3:00Speaker 1: done the little trick that we like to do with
- 3:02Speaker 1: duck leg the mediator fishing game, cook but ladies and gentlemen,
- 3:06Speaker 1: where you just um, basically score the joint there right
- 3:11Speaker 1: where the orange ens and the feathers start. You score
- 3:15Speaker 1: it just enough to get through the outside skin, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: then you just yank the leg from the well carefully
- 3:21Speaker 1: hanging onto the drumstick. I guess it would be right
- 3:24Speaker 1: not quite the thigh. You yank all those tendons right
- 3:27Speaker 1: out of the drumstick, and uh, it was just a
- 3:30Speaker 1: big version of that. Yeah, I challenge. I don't want
- 3:34Speaker 1: to use a like uh you know how the problem
- 3:37Speaker 1: I have a lot of my like pop references are old.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Feel like, if I want to say, um, like, I
- 3:45Speaker 1: would challenge Lou Frigno to uh do that with a
- 3:50Speaker 1: Canada goose leg? What what should I say? You're talking about?
- 3:54Speaker 1: He's like the seventies Hulk, right, yeah, Like so I
- 3:56Speaker 1: need like a contemporary example of someone with her killing strength.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Dave Batista Really yeah, he's he's a he's he was
- 4:05Speaker 1: a wrestler and now he's like a movie star. Challenge
- 4:08Speaker 1: would be a good one. I'm not doing a rock reference, man,
- 4:12Speaker 1: why not just not gonna what's that other wrestler guy
- 4:15Speaker 1: that's in all the movies? Work? Denver was in that
- 4:17Speaker 1: reality TV John Cena, John Cena, Yeah, yeah, I would
- 4:22Speaker 1: challenge John. I would challenge John Cena to do that
- 4:27Speaker 1: with a Canada goose leg. It's good. I saw Yanni
- 4:31Speaker 1: try it. He's no John Cena. He couldn't know it.
- 4:34Speaker 1: But I didn't try it by myself. Nonetheless, you tagged
- 4:37Speaker 1: teamed with the flip flop flesher. That's right, And it
- 4:40Speaker 1: was not even kind of budget budged. And then it
- 4:43Speaker 1: hit like a wall and it was not going to
- 4:45Speaker 1: feel that you and and Seth could if you were
- 4:49Speaker 1: tag teaming with John Cena on the other side. Yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 1: so tag team match you Seth and John Cena. Would
- 4:55Speaker 1: you be able to whoop him? No? Really, I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: think so. Now if he's a some kind of a fighter,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I mean those skills, you don't go a long way. Uh.
- 5:05Speaker 1: We're joined by Anthony Locata. Nites would be customary to
- 5:11Speaker 1: say like hello, uh, Ryan Callahan, Seth or filled the
- 5:16Speaker 1: engineers here of course, Yanni and Kevin Sloan first ever
- 5:19Speaker 1: time on the show. Yeah, well, yes, finally letting me on. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: we should try to lock the door. But he crawled in.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Um a couple of things. So well, oh the finger,
- 5:29Speaker 1: what happened? Uh working on a he's a welder and
- 5:34Speaker 1: they were in you know, he got his glove caught
- 5:36Speaker 1: in a drill press. The uh, the bit wrapped around
- 5:44Speaker 1: the glove, the glove, the bit got the gloves, the
- 5:48Speaker 1: glove got the finger and pulled it fifteen inches attending.
- 5:52Speaker 1: What they did with it is the guy that wrote
- 5:54Speaker 1: in j ethan Um this is his first names. What
- 6:00Speaker 1: they did was when he got married, they want that
- 6:02Speaker 1: he was got. He got to reading about Viking funerals,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and the night before he got married, they took the
- 6:10Speaker 1: old man's finger. It was in his brother in law's freezer.
- 6:14Speaker 1: They took the old man's free uh finger and gave
- 6:16Speaker 1: it a Viking funeral in a kiddie pool in the backyard.
- 6:22Speaker 1: People in attendance, So they burned it a Viking funeral.
- 6:26Speaker 1: They burned burned finger in a floating in a little
- 6:29Speaker 1: boat in a kiddie pool, because like a Viking funeral. Uh.
- 6:35Speaker 1: For those of you out of the out of the know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: maybe they put you in a boat full of sticks
- 6:39Speaker 1: and firewood and whatnot and DAUSI and gas and lighted
- 6:41Speaker 1: on fire and shove you out. There was some cute
- 6:43Speaker 1: kids movie, wasn't there. That was like the guy's last
- 6:47Speaker 1: dying wish, and the adults wouldn't let it happen, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: all the kids had to conspire to make it happen.
- 6:53Speaker 1: At the very end, they launched the last arrow and
- 6:57Speaker 1: that sounds yeah, you're right. And then then then the
- 7:00Speaker 1: movie Dead Man, he kind of does something when he
- 7:02Speaker 1: finally gets William Blake. Um. Yes, if if you're not
- 7:09Speaker 1: familiar with the Dead Man, i'd i'd like you to
- 7:10Speaker 1: please leave. But I've been trying to watch that movie
- 7:14Speaker 1: for five years, and the end of Dead Man that's
- 7:18Speaker 1: I can't explain it takes too long to explain it. Uh.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Moving on the is this an old joke? A guy
- 7:25Speaker 1: wrote in I feel like this is like an old joke.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you guys what it is. So he
- 7:29Speaker 1: this guy. There's a great level of specificity in an
- 7:32Speaker 1: email that the person wrote in Upper East Tennessee. He's
- 7:36Speaker 1: saying there's a lot of farmers that have turned to
- 7:38Speaker 1: raising sheep as the demand for tobacco has fallen. Is
- 7:42Speaker 1: this sound legit? That sounds perfectly plausible. Um influx of
- 7:48Speaker 1: raising sheep has brought an increase in the kyote population.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Lots of people having trouble with Kyle to have one
- 7:54Speaker 1: of those meetings where all the different stakeholders come in
- 7:57Speaker 1: and fishing game is there, and there's farmers there and
- 8:00Speaker 1: other interested parties all show up and they're exploring these solutions.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And the solutions include using donkeys to protect herds, um
- 8:10Speaker 1: the cost benefit of hiring kyote hunters to try to
- 8:14Speaker 1: do a population reduction. And they said that one lady
- 8:17Speaker 1: shows up, uh, and an animal rights activists shows up,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and she proposes that they set live traps for the
- 8:24Speaker 1: coyotes and castrate the males and then release them, to
- 8:29Speaker 1: which an old farmer says, lady, I don't think you
- 8:32Speaker 1: understand the problem. These coyotes aren't having sex with our sheep,
- 8:36Speaker 1: they're killing them. Is that an old joke that has
- 8:41Speaker 1: an old one? Yeah? Yeah, I thought it might be
- 8:44Speaker 1: an old joke. Um, moving on, So can I ask
- 8:50Speaker 1: you guys are like a lame people to hang out? Well,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I thought there was gonna be more of the story here. Okay,
- 8:56Speaker 1: So this person is saying that the paco when when
- 9:01Speaker 1: it was all tobacco up there, it didn't support the
- 9:04Speaker 1: amount of wildlife that would then have a neighboring large predator. Uh,
- 9:14Speaker 1: not a large predator, but a large population of coyotes
- 9:17Speaker 1: being the predator. What I think is going on? And
- 9:20Speaker 1: then add the sheep, because nobody's raising sheep and making
- 9:24Speaker 1: any sort of cash if they're letting. But do you
- 9:28Speaker 1: know the joke, um, the old the wild game cooking
- 9:32Speaker 1: joke where you describe like a very elaborate process of
- 9:37Speaker 1: cooking something and then you cook it on a cedar
- 9:42Speaker 1: plank and the punch line is always the same, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: then you throw out the dark and you eat the wood, right,
- 9:50Speaker 1: But I think it's that joke. But he's just spinning
- 9:55Speaker 1: the tobacco. The tobacco thing is the setup, like the
- 9:58Speaker 1: step being like, oh, tell you how to cook a coop?
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah no, no, no, no no no, and eat the
- 10:05Speaker 1: board all right. Or I'm sure there were plenty of
- 10:08Speaker 1: coyotes there before, but it wasn't a problem until people
- 10:11Speaker 1: started raising sheep eating the tobacco because it makes you sick.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I found that out in fifth grade, means Stanley Johnson
- 10:19Speaker 1: means Stanley Johnson. We were making agricultural maps. You had
- 10:22Speaker 1: to glue egg products to a map of the US,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and someone brought in a big old thing of long
- 10:28Speaker 1: leaf tobaccy and me and Stanley knew that was something
- 10:32Speaker 1: that people like to do. This chew tobacco and we ate.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Someone had to go home. I was I was literally hallucinating, uh,
- 10:42Speaker 1: throwing up, but it can't be rescued by my mom.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I never became a dipper. Um. Another quick note, Oh
- 10:52Speaker 1: like I did that. Oh this is interesting. Guy wrote
- 10:55Speaker 1: in that they were they made some bear sliders, black
- 10:57Speaker 1: bear sliders and someone cracked a joke. What's called a
- 11:01Speaker 1: ten ten joke? I don't know what that is. Someone
- 11:03Speaker 1: cracked a ten ten joke and the guy snorted eating
- 11:05Speaker 1: his bear slider and got so much bear slider up
- 11:07Speaker 1: his nose that he wound up at the hospital his
- 11:11Speaker 1: sinus cavity packed full of a bear slider. What was
- 11:16Speaker 1: the joke? Must have been a good joke. Ten ten joke?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Is that bad? Yeah? I need to do some research
- 11:20Speaker 1: on what a ten ten joke is that. That seems extreme. Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 1: they said. They said they basically pressure washed the bears
- 11:30Speaker 1: the black bear meat back out of his sinus. My
- 11:33Speaker 1: brother did that when he was a kid, with a
- 11:35Speaker 1: rubber night walker for fishing. My mom put him to
- 11:38Speaker 1: bed he was playing with it. She said, it's a
- 11:40Speaker 1: rubber knight walker, like a rubber worm like you guys
- 11:43Speaker 1: called night walkers. That's when my dad calls it. So
- 11:46Speaker 1: that's why I didn't, because I've heard my dad tell
- 11:49Speaker 1: the story so so many times. I told it the
- 11:51Speaker 1: way my father would. Um. Yeah, soft plastic six inch
- 11:55Speaker 1: rubber worm. Did you got when you were kids? You
- 11:57Speaker 1: have to kind of had the three gold hooks like
- 12:00Speaker 1: it was a purple worm, pink dot and they had
- 12:02Speaker 1: the three hooks. Oh my god, they'll slay. They came
- 12:05Speaker 1: like tied like a snell. Well anyway, my brother was
- 12:09Speaker 1: playing with one when my mom put him to bed.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He was like three and um when she left, he
- 12:15Speaker 1: shoved it so far up his nose that I had
- 12:17Speaker 1: to go to the hospital and get it pressure washed out.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Oh that corrob rates that story, so that could happen. Yeah,
- 12:23Speaker 1: any news on ten ten jokes? Yeah, the Urban Dictionary
- 12:29Speaker 1: is it? Can you say it on the air? Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: for sure, I think so. Um it says it's like
- 12:35Speaker 1: a year joke. No, it's something he's too when you
- 12:39Speaker 1: say when um, there's a female with voluptuous Okay. So
- 12:47Speaker 1: he made a joke about this and it caused him
- 12:49Speaker 1: to get the bear stuck in his nose. Um, there's
- 12:54Speaker 1: a good story. Guy wrote in about his body. Their
- 12:58Speaker 1: cliff jumping, and he knows a guy that jumps off
- 13:05Speaker 1: a cliff so high. There's a lot too about a
- 13:10Speaker 1: skip to the graphic part. When he struck the water,
- 13:13Speaker 1: his swim trunks captured a scoop of water that caused
- 13:16Speaker 1: them to rip up the end seem, causing a small
- 13:20Speaker 1: laceration between his legs. The hydraulic pressure proceeded to widen
- 13:26Speaker 1: the hole enough that his pelvis broke into three plate
- 13:29Speaker 1: pieces and folded outwards. The jet of water traveled upwards
- 13:34Speaker 1: through his body with enough force to puncture his left lung,
- 13:38Speaker 1: severing both femoral arteries, urethra and scrambling his intestines. The
- 13:45Speaker 1: only reason he did not die within seconds is that
- 13:47Speaker 1: the ends of his arteries were pushed into both sides
- 13:51Speaker 1: of the fractured pelvis, which then pinched them shut. I
- 13:55Speaker 1: don't know that film. Why are you laughing? Not even
- 14:00Speaker 1: on the show. I was just I was picturing you.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You did a very good job, like a very visual
- 14:06Speaker 1: play by play of that, and I was running through
- 14:08Speaker 1: it in my head and together you thought you were
- 14:11Speaker 1: trying to follow and in the end you're feeling it
- 14:13Speaker 1: or not feeling Oh yeah, for sure. It was the
- 14:16Speaker 1: pinching that was That was an ending, for sure. So
- 14:19Speaker 1: you believe that that happened to that? Absolutely not. It
- 14:22Speaker 1: was just a good story. No, it sounds crazy, right,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and I Phil is not buying it. If I had
- 14:31Speaker 1: to put my life on it, yeah, I'd say I'm
- 14:33Speaker 1: not buying it either to tourists swim trunks. I can
- 14:38Speaker 1: believe that it led to like a Rube Goldberg scenario,
- 14:43Speaker 1: which is long. I don't know that reference. Oh but yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you'll find Yn't even knows a lot of stuff. Sometimes
- 14:50Speaker 1: you'll find he's like kind of like mysterious little holes.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Rube Goldberg would be like like these contraptions, right, like
- 14:58Speaker 1: a ping pong ball, fall balls and tips the lever,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and the lever causes a little drop of water to
- 15:04Speaker 1: drip in a bucket of water, and the bucket of
- 15:06Speaker 1: water then tips your kids want to play mouse trap
- 15:09Speaker 1: that game that it's like the Rube Goldberg contraption? Is
- 15:13Speaker 1: that named after a person? Well, I'd like to think
- 15:16Speaker 1: that it's named after Rube Goldberg? Rube? Is it real? Rube?
- 15:22Speaker 1: All right? Now? I think the other thing is it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: like this person would be so the cliff the cliff jumper. Yeah,
- 15:34Speaker 1: the cliff jumper is like, can I interrupt you? The
- 15:37Speaker 1: finger with the fifteen inches attendant. I have the photographs.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I would love nothing more than to put them on Instagram.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I feel like that would cause me damage with the
- 15:45Speaker 1: folks on Instagram, and I would get my account removed. Yeah,
- 15:48Speaker 1: it's something, doesn't it seem like you would? Yeah, it's
- 15:52Speaker 1: not good. I know that medical Instagram pages have a
- 15:55Speaker 1: lot of problem where they get censored even though they're
- 15:58Speaker 1: trying to be helpful. Yeah, I follow a couple of
- 16:01Speaker 1: them that are pretty interesting. Go on. Oh so anyway, this,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this cliff jumper to the point seems so precariously kept
- 16:12Speaker 1: together that no surgeon in the world would even attempt
- 16:18Speaker 1: to touch the person like Humpty almost like a Humpty
- 16:21Speaker 1: Dumpty kind of level of Yeah, it's a house of
- 16:24Speaker 1: cards type of you ever heard of Humpy Humpty Dumpty?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Got not the rapper, the Humpty Hump. Yeah, I don't
- 16:35Speaker 1: think his name was Humpty Dumpty. He's sang the Humpty Hump.
- 16:39Speaker 1: It was the Digital Underground, but the digital Underground can't
- 16:42Speaker 1: remember the name of the rapper himself. The final thing,
- 16:47Speaker 1: the finally I want to top before we talk about
- 16:49Speaker 1: schul talk about my my great friend and neighbor, Um Patrick.
- 17:00Speaker 1: He took offense. Yan. You weren't here, but we were
- 17:03Speaker 1: dogging on you behind your back about how you're not
- 17:04Speaker 1: a true outdoorsman. Um. He was texting me today about
- 17:09Speaker 1: making some ski plans speaking now, I'm not going to
- 17:13Speaker 1: read his note, come on, bring it, okay. He doesn't
- 17:17Speaker 1: like He takes offense by the idea that, um, I
- 17:20Speaker 1: don't think like I know Yanni not to be a
- 17:22Speaker 1: true outdoorsman because he likes to ski. Um, because the
- 17:26Speaker 1: true outdoorsman wants to be doing all doorright, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: wants to be hunting, fishing. Um, it would never like
- 17:32Speaker 1: take all those you know waste all the time. So uh,
- 17:38Speaker 1: my neighbor, my beloved neighbor, Patrick, who has a kiln,
- 17:41Speaker 1: he like throws, he does ceramics work. Um, he accuses
- 17:46Speaker 1: me of commondeering the definition of a true outdoorsman, and
- 17:51Speaker 1: he doesn't like it. He takes offense that it being
- 17:53Speaker 1: limited to exclusively hunting and fishing year round with no
- 17:58Speaker 1: inclusion of other activity these that indeed require being out
- 18:02Speaker 1: of doors and in the wilds of nature. Then he
- 18:06Speaker 1: goes on to top of all kinds of dictionary definitions
- 18:10Speaker 1: of outdoorsmen, one who spends much time in the outdoors
- 18:14Speaker 1: or an outdoor activities, A person devoted to outdoor sports
- 18:18Speaker 1: and recreational activities such as hunting, hiking, fishing, and camping.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And then he goes on and on about how you
- 18:26Speaker 1: know it teaches everyone you appreciate all the seasons, and
- 18:29Speaker 1: you're learning about all this kind of stuff. Now, you
- 18:32Speaker 1: guys are gonna skiing together. So if we were out,
- 18:35Speaker 1: if I just happened to go backpacking say this summer,
- 18:38Speaker 1: is that also going to be a notch against my
- 18:41Speaker 1: you're scouting, right, not if you're scouting. Now, my boy
- 18:46Speaker 1: was just at ski lessons and he took note of
- 18:48Speaker 1: a weasel, which what people often do. Took note a weasel,
- 18:52Speaker 1: So I would almost roll that into a scouting trip. Um.
- 18:57Speaker 1: He says, we should be celebrating anyone getting out side
- 19:00Speaker 1: and enjoying our public lands, regardless of the means that
- 19:03Speaker 1: brought them to that space. A true outdoorsman is simply
- 19:06Speaker 1: a human being who, at their court, loves and understands
- 19:11Speaker 1: the natural world and prefers to be immersed in it
- 19:14Speaker 1: whenever possible. Well, put all right, freshly back, here's what's
- 19:22Speaker 1: supposed be talking about? Freshy back from Mexico. Who's deer hunting? Um?
- 19:26Speaker 1: I fear that I'm a little bit torn about top.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I feel like, who's your hunting is like? Is gonna
- 19:33Speaker 1: become like a famous thing you're worried about ruining it.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I don't know. That's what I'm torn about is because, uh,
- 19:42Speaker 1: one the mentality of I used to have a friend
- 19:45Speaker 1: I'm still good friends with them, and they used to
- 19:47Speaker 1: make these, uh these really good pickles, you know, and
- 19:52Speaker 1: they had like a family recipe how they made the pickles,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and people who ate the pickles had joy, like they
- 19:58Speaker 1: loved the pickles, and they'd be like, how did you
- 20:00Speaker 1: I'd like to you know, I'd like to make some
- 20:03Speaker 1: of those pickles so that I can have more joy,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and they would Did you tell him you should pick
- 20:10Speaker 1: up skiing family? Yeah? I was explaining the eye there
- 20:14Speaker 1: to day. I kind of put my finger on it.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Or it's like a juvenile sport because it's like the
- 20:21Speaker 1: sensation you're supposed to have is captured by the word. Uh.
- 20:27Speaker 1: It's like like children, like the way children would slide
- 20:30Speaker 1: dump things like McDonald's and stuff at the slides. Um.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But what was I saying, Oh the droll Yeah he's
- 20:40Speaker 1: been on the show, Matt drow Um. The Drolls family
- 20:42Speaker 1: had like a pickle recipe. They were reluctant to give
- 20:44Speaker 1: it up, and you'd be like, but if the people
- 20:47Speaker 1: like to eat the pickles and it brings joy to
- 20:49Speaker 1: their lives. And since you're not in the business of
- 20:51Speaker 1: selling pickles and you're not depriving yourself of a revenue stream,
- 20:55Speaker 1: and you know that the taste of these pickles brings joy,
- 20:58Speaker 1: what is the motivation to deprive? Right? Like what are
- 21:04Speaker 1: you getting out of people not having joined their lives? Like, like,
- 21:10Speaker 1: what is the benefit of monopolizing a good way to
- 21:12Speaker 1: make a pickle when there's no financial steak? Just knowing
- 21:17Speaker 1: that I have really good pickles? You don't please no,
- 21:21Speaker 1: because yeah, because you are the only purveyor of that
- 21:24Speaker 1: pickle joy? Is this any recipes that way that that
- 21:29Speaker 1: doesn't that people are like yeah, I don't think so.
- 21:31Speaker 1: You know, like my wife is just kind of uh
- 21:33Speaker 1: would hold on to that adult cookie recipe? There would
- 21:36Speaker 1: be like so much the one that she brings to
- 21:38Speaker 1: the Christmas because she wants to revel in the she
- 21:41Speaker 1: wants to be like the joy that it generates. I
- 21:45Speaker 1: want to be the only person that can harness the joy. Yeah,
- 21:48Speaker 1: you get to be the person. You get to be
- 21:50Speaker 1: the person that's like, oh, Jennifer's cookies, Jennifer's cookies, Matt's pickles.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Can you imagine if the medical world, if the metal
- 22:00Speaker 1: cold world, Um, they do do that. No, it doesn't
- 22:03Speaker 1: work like that. Yeah, well except they just put a
- 22:06Speaker 1: price tag on it exactly. But they don't be like,
- 22:09Speaker 1: oh no, I know how to save your life. If
- 22:12Speaker 1: I'm not telling, I'm not gonna allow it to be published.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Is a different form of currency anyhow. The cous Deier conundrum.
- 22:23Speaker 1: The Cousier conundrum is that it's like it's like a
- 22:28Speaker 1: really special thing and it feels like, right now is
- 22:30Speaker 1: the good old days. We're talking about hunting cous dere Snora, Mexico.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Why do you feel today's the good old days? Because
- 22:41Speaker 1: I can't picture that it was at some point in
- 22:43Speaker 1: time better, do you know? You know what I mean?
- 22:48Speaker 1: It feels like it feels like you're touching something like
- 22:50Speaker 1: almost perfect. And Christine, certainly Christine, I think that's one
- 22:55Speaker 1: of the coolest parts about going down there. It feels
- 22:58Speaker 1: like perfect. It doesn't feel like anyone could say, like, oh,
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know, when I was a boy, we commented we
- 23:03Speaker 1: were down there, it felt like no one had been
- 23:04Speaker 1: there since we were there last year kind of felt untouched.
- 23:08Speaker 1: You don't get to experience that up very often. No,
- 23:11Speaker 1: it's an interesting landscape too because just historically there's never
- 23:16Speaker 1: been a ton of people there there, you know, I
- 23:19Speaker 1: mean there's mining has been the largest population driver in
- 23:25Speaker 1: that area of the world I think historically. Um, and
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know, there's just not that many people who have
- 23:36Speaker 1: hunted deer up in those mountains all in all. No,
- 23:40Speaker 1: it contradicts a point that the area. So what we're
- 23:42Speaker 1: talking about Sonora, so it's not really the snore of
- 23:44Speaker 1: desert because you're up in these things. These are no,
- 23:48Speaker 1: they're referred to as a Sonoran Mountains, Snoran mountains. Um.
- 23:53Speaker 1: They rise up from you know, they rise up from
- 23:55Speaker 1: the flat desert, and he's kind of like islandy mountain
- 23:57Speaker 1: chains uh low down like you know, in the in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the slopes leading up to him is you know, just
- 24:05Speaker 1: very sandy, rocky ground with like ok tello cactus and
- 24:10Speaker 1: then you go open up and up, but eventually get
- 24:12Speaker 1: high enough you get up where there's some you know,
- 24:14Speaker 1: full on timber, like some pine trees scattered here and there,
- 24:18Speaker 1: nasty okatillo. Is that that's a good context. No, But
- 24:23Speaker 1: I used to like to fantasize about. We used to
- 24:27Speaker 1: sit there when we're glass and we would sit there
- 24:29Speaker 1: and describe ways. You know, you kind of be like,
- 24:33Speaker 1: you know what would be funny. It's like if you
- 24:36Speaker 1: took one of these and X, Y and Z your
- 24:39Speaker 1: buddy or took one of these and you and your
- 24:44Speaker 1: other buddy did this to the other buddy. This is
- 24:50Speaker 1: Steve and the mouse in his pocket is having this.
- 24:53Speaker 1: We're having this conversation. No, we talked about making bullwhips
- 24:57Speaker 1: out of oak, tios, all kinds stuff. It's it's a yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 1: it's a it's a great plant. It would be like
- 25:04Speaker 1: like if you were like a nefarious torture okato would
- 25:07Speaker 1: be like a thing you'd have in your box of
- 25:09Speaker 1: torture equipment, be growing it in your backyard. You'd be like,
- 25:12Speaker 1: oh yeah, get an oak deal um. Cou'se deers seemed
- 25:17Speaker 1: to love to feed in it. Yeah, they like it.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You know what. Cale I was telling cal that walking
- 25:21Speaker 1: out in the dark, dear night with Aum packing a
- 25:24Speaker 1: Cou's deer out in the dark, and we got talking
- 25:26Speaker 1: about how I was telling how other ranches I've been
- 25:29Speaker 1: in Sonora that were lower you would find CU's deer
- 25:35Speaker 1: on these little humps loaded with oak teo, and there's
- 25:38Speaker 1: always grass there. Cal had a great point is that
- 25:41Speaker 1: the cattle don't like to go in there, so the
- 25:43Speaker 1: grass doesn't get grazed on the oak teo humps, which
- 25:48Speaker 1: I thought was a very plausible theory. They maybe there's
- 25:52Speaker 1: some sort of like safety from predators as well. Yea,
- 25:57Speaker 1: like stuff doesn't want to go in because it's a
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's a wee thing where it's thick and open. At
- 26:03Speaker 1: the same time, you can like it can be covered
- 26:07Speaker 1: in okatillo, but yet you can see every square inch
- 26:09Speaker 1: of the hillside, but you can't go running across that hillside.
- 26:14Speaker 1: That's a good point. Um, So we're like we're hunting
- 26:20Speaker 1: like fairly close to I mean, you're looking back into
- 26:22Speaker 1: the U and we should like do a better job
- 26:24Speaker 1: of describing okatillo. Oh, go ahead. It looks like a
- 26:27Speaker 1: giant torture apparatus. It's like, uh, like, uh, a spaghetti
- 26:34Speaker 1: noodle that's twelve feet tall. Yeah, I think it can
- 26:41Speaker 1: be two in diameter at the base. The giant one
- 26:45Speaker 1: covered in very very durable cactus thorns with a yellow
- 26:51Speaker 1: flower off and the yellow flower looks pretty yeah, And
- 26:53Speaker 1: if you took it and cut it off and then
- 26:56Speaker 1: d bird a section for a handle m, you would
- 27:00Speaker 1: have a formidable yes. And each plant probably has I
- 27:06Speaker 1: don't know, quite a few stocks kind of coming out
- 27:11Speaker 1: in v formation I'm looking at when you google images,
- 27:14Speaker 1: it's all just pictures of it in the springtime when
- 27:17Speaker 1: it's blooming and actually has a beautiful red flower on it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: But we never see that since we're down there in January. Uh.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Point I was gonna make about we're gonna tak fair
- 27:26Speaker 1: bit about this, but pint I was gonna make about
- 27:28Speaker 1: a thing about the mountains and snores like like just
- 27:31Speaker 1: across the border from Arizona. Um, it kind of contradicts.
- 27:37Speaker 1: It contradicts a point I've often made about like pristine
- 27:40Speaker 1: like pristine habitats is that I would always say, like
- 27:44Speaker 1: in the US, we've we've gotten to a point where anything,
- 27:47Speaker 1: like all the stuff that we have this pristine is
- 27:50Speaker 1: pristine because someone kind of decided to have it be
- 27:53Speaker 1: that way. Right, Like for a lot of our nation's history,
- 27:57Speaker 1: we had pristine places in spite of our efforts to
- 28:00Speaker 1: like get rid of them all. And then we had
- 28:02Speaker 1: a switch. We like had a national mindset change, and
- 28:07Speaker 1: and now we kind of like have pristine things because
- 28:10Speaker 1: we've decided that there they should be that way, right,
- 28:13Speaker 1: like we do things to may hope to to help
- 28:15Speaker 1: them stay that way protections. But down there it's like
- 28:19Speaker 1: it just really I said every time we talk about
- 28:21Speaker 1: this every year, if you talk about Cuisier, it is
- 28:22Speaker 1: it is like traveling. All you need to do, like
- 28:26Speaker 1: you cross this geopolitical it's like very seemingly arbitrarily paced
- 28:31Speaker 1: geopolitical boundary and crossing the Mexico and everything changes. Yeah,
- 28:40Speaker 1: Like you cross a fence and there is a guy
- 28:44Speaker 1: on the side of the road with a splitting mall
- 28:46Speaker 1: and a giant pile of messki basically split the serve,
- 28:53Speaker 1: split the serve, cooking wood. It is a different place.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And then you go in the mountains, it's like it's
- 29:00Speaker 1: like off, you'll see anyone for days, and then you
- 29:04Speaker 1: finally see some person riding on a trail off in
- 29:08Speaker 1: the mountains with like three dogs and a lever action
- 29:11Speaker 1: car being in a leather scabbard on the side of
- 29:15Speaker 1: a horse going Lord nolswhere and he does that every
- 29:20Speaker 1: single day with a burlap sack full of his stuff
- 29:23Speaker 1: that he needs tied around the saddle horn is a
- 29:26Speaker 1: different land. And you look, if you look really hard,
- 29:30Speaker 1: there's some I'm very sure, state of the art surveillance balloon,
- 29:35Speaker 1: you know, suspended above the border. And it's just so
- 29:37Speaker 1: weird that that is there, and probably like all the
- 29:41Speaker 1: technology on the freaking planet to some degree right there.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And then you have this handful of Caballeros that are
- 29:51Speaker 1: living like that stuff never existed, no electricity, and so
- 29:57Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to, like, over the years,
- 29:58Speaker 1: we've haunted quite a number of I'll explain a little bit, no,
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, y you do it? Explain how the system
- 30:03Speaker 1: works down there, Janni, do all the all the Triman's about,
- 30:07Speaker 1: Like at the state, you know, they make an assessment,
- 30:11Speaker 1: Jay Scott cal I just have a quick correction. This
- 30:15Speaker 1: did a quick little uh Google search on Caballero and
- 30:20Speaker 1: I think it's uh Caro, Mexican, gentleman, it's Caballero Ca. Yeah.
- 30:27Speaker 1: But people always criticize how we save a Carol. They
- 30:29Speaker 1: say it's Carol. Right now. You're supposed to say your vs,
- 30:32Speaker 1: like like Vanado is you know Bonado Vanado? We say Vanado,
- 30:36Speaker 1: dear umot is with in Sonora, it's wild turkey. Well,
- 30:44Speaker 1: Bato likes El grande turkey. That's yeah, big chicken. Now,
- 30:51Speaker 1: what do you want me to explain? How? How? How
- 30:54Speaker 1: have some life to start? I want you to start?
- 30:58Speaker 1: Yep yep ye nuts to soup. Best to my knowledge,
- 31:05Speaker 1: um a wildlife biologists that is that works for the
- 31:12Speaker 1: Mexican federal government, goes to all right, state state government
- 31:19Speaker 1: my understanding. Okay, so he works for the Sonora, Sonoran
- 31:23Speaker 1: state government. Person. Yeah, they go to each of these
- 31:27Speaker 1: ranches and they sort of do a game count and
- 31:31Speaker 1: they look at the habitat and then from there they say,
- 31:35Speaker 1: this ranch you guys own. You guys can have six
- 31:39Speaker 1: or ten or twelve deer tags, twenty have Lena tags,
- 31:46Speaker 1: and who knows what else They turkey tags too. That's right,
- 31:50Speaker 1: that's probably about it. Yeah, maybe maybe you can speak
- 31:54Speaker 1: to Anty Anthony's hundred ducks in Mexico. Right, it was
- 31:58Speaker 1: a different situation than a ramstone. Are different states, so
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna work differently. And and and then yeah, in other
- 32:04Speaker 1: areas of scenari, they have mule deer, but we never
- 32:06Speaker 1: see him where we go, and so they have these tags,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and I guess they the family could just take the
- 32:11Speaker 1: tags and go hunting, or they could just give them
- 32:13Speaker 1: to friends. But what's happened because of the popularity of
- 32:16Speaker 1: Cou's Deer Because I want to interject, because I'm developing
- 32:19Speaker 1: a theory about this, I don't think that they give
- 32:22Speaker 1: a ship about the tags. I guess they want to
- 32:24Speaker 1: hunt deer. They hunt deer, mm hmm. My sense that
- 32:30Speaker 1: could be too. My sense is like, oh, how cute
- 32:34Speaker 1: You're gonna give me deer tags, okay, which are valuable. Yeah,
- 32:39Speaker 1: but I don't think that. I don't think that the
- 32:42Speaker 1: Vicarro's Bacarro's. I don't like saying Bocarro's. Is that really
- 32:45Speaker 1: how I'm sposed to say it? Okay? I don't think
- 32:50Speaker 1: that those guys are like applying for like that they're
- 32:55Speaker 1: like worried about deer tags. No, definitely, So I think
- 32:58Speaker 1: that the deer tags are Yeah, maybe it's just for
- 33:02Speaker 1: gringos just so that we can get them back across
- 33:05Speaker 1: the border legally. So anyways they have they're sitting on
- 33:09Speaker 1: these tags, and um, how it works for us is
- 33:14Speaker 1: that our buddy Jay Scott, Jay Scott Outdoors and the
- 33:17Speaker 1: Colburn Scottfitting team. Yeah. Um, they go and find they
- 33:23Speaker 1: scout ranches. They find ranches that have tags available, and
- 33:27Speaker 1: ranches that also have like there's different levels of the houses,
- 33:31Speaker 1: but some sort of lodging that you can stay at. Um,
- 33:35Speaker 1: and then they basically by buying the tags, they sort
- 33:39Speaker 1: of also leased the ranch. So if there's because you've
- 33:43Speaker 1: monopolized the deer hunting on the ranch. Yeah, yeah, but
- 33:48Speaker 1: they're pretty pricey tags, you know, anywhere increasing dramatically, is
- 33:52Speaker 1: that right? Do you remember what the first one was
- 33:54Speaker 1: that you ever paid for? Haven't they gone from like
- 33:56Speaker 1: a thousand or twelve hundred? Yeah, but that might be
- 33:59Speaker 1: over many years. Okay, so if they've doubled in price
- 34:02Speaker 1: in twenty years, because I think now they're around three
- 34:04Speaker 1: thousand apiece. So yeah, three thousand dollars gets you a
- 34:08Speaker 1: cusier tag, and you usually have to buy again because
- 34:12Speaker 1: like Jay has to to least the ranch, he's gonna
- 34:15Speaker 1: have to buy all the tags. Right, So you want
- 34:17Speaker 1: to go to a ranch, you can't just say, oh,
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go there by myself and I'll take
- 34:20Speaker 1: one tag, because he's got you know, eighteen k into it. Yeah,
- 34:25Speaker 1: he's got many. He's got many years into developing relationships
- 34:29Speaker 1: with some places. That's right, And I don't I don't
- 34:31Speaker 1: know that. I don't know what like the Dave, I
- 34:33Speaker 1: don't know what sort of the standard arrangement is, but
- 34:35Speaker 1: he seems to make an arrangement where you have some
- 34:38Speaker 1: whether it's like some old bombed out hut or a
- 34:40Speaker 1: really nice place, like some place to stay. Yeah, and
- 34:44Speaker 1: we've stayed in some places that like a concrete shell, Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: that's a good way to describe it, with some sort
- 34:52Speaker 1: of running water, usually some mattresses that you just rather
- 34:58Speaker 1: use your own, uh sleep pad on the ground, or
- 35:01Speaker 1: like gorgeous places that are like nicer than your own house. Yeah,
- 35:05Speaker 1: with some really awesome like Mexican sauti sautillo um tile
- 35:10Speaker 1: work and stone work or some fake stone work and
- 35:13Speaker 1: the heart that it was at this house that we
- 35:15Speaker 1: stayed at. Yeah, and this kind of weird contract, this
- 35:18Speaker 1: weird sort of contradiction of like really big places that
- 35:22Speaker 1: have no power. Yeah, they walk around the head lamp
- 35:27Speaker 1: burning wood. Well they have power generator, but yeah they're
- 35:32Speaker 1: not like you know, they're not hooked up to their um.
- 35:37Speaker 1: So yeah, so once you buy them, Jay Scott's got
- 35:40Speaker 1: a system set up. It's like his d I Y
- 35:43Speaker 1: Cou's deer hunting system our program, and uh, you can
- 35:48Speaker 1: get ahold of him and he will basically sell you
- 35:52Speaker 1: those tags and then also help arrange the whole process
- 35:56Speaker 1: of you going from Douglas arizonas you they are um
- 36:01Speaker 1: port of entry or the crossing point when we go
- 36:03Speaker 1: where we go into Mexico. And so he's sort of
- 36:06Speaker 1: like from that moment when you're gonna go into Mexico,
- 36:08Speaker 1: he kind of lines out every single step that gets
- 36:12Speaker 1: you all the way to to the ranch and cous
- 36:14Speaker 1: deer hunting and he has he's like and he's got
- 36:17Speaker 1: locals that he's met there that he works with and
- 36:20Speaker 1: helps some guide and do various things. Yeah, probably a
- 36:23Speaker 1: couple of them at least are like dual citizens so
- 36:26Speaker 1: they can travel back and forth freely. They speak Spanish
- 36:29Speaker 1: very well, they know the low down what goes on
- 36:32Speaker 1: in Agua Prieta. So it makes it a very like
- 36:35Speaker 1: safe because a lot of people have worries, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: about going into old Mexico. I got a lot of
- 36:40Speaker 1: stuff comments just from the one Instagram post I had
- 36:43Speaker 1: to add where people are like now how do you feel?
- 36:46Speaker 1: And now it is this same Now, aren't you worried
- 36:49Speaker 1: and things like that. I've gone, Yes, yes, I am worried.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I have gone. How many times We've gone seven times
- 36:59Speaker 1: something like that. Probably have never had a single ounce
- 37:03Speaker 1: of a problem. Yet I'm always a little teensy bit scared,
- 37:07Speaker 1: only in the transportation part, but have never had any
- 37:11Speaker 1: problem at all. Anthony on the other hand, Yeah, I've
- 37:16Speaker 1: been twice this time no issues. Where I was before
- 37:23Speaker 1: um uh an area near called sassaby Um. I had
- 37:29Speaker 1: a good cu'se deer hunting there. I was beautiful are
- 37:31Speaker 1: a very similar area, a little lower elevation, so train
- 37:34Speaker 1: was a little different. Um. We did run into some
- 37:37Speaker 1: folks who were with cartel Um on the property we were.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I wouldn't say it was a problem. You know, it
- 37:45Speaker 1: didn't really cause any issues. But we were on this
- 37:48Speaker 1: right after the election, settling ladies. It was this was
- 37:55Speaker 1: it's got everything's got politics And yeah, two thousand and sixteen,
- 37:58Speaker 1: right after the presidential election, after um President Trump had
- 38:02Speaker 1: been elected, but before his inauguration. Do you know we're
- 38:04Speaker 1: on and couldn't find out who won? Oh really nerve
- 38:08Speaker 1: rack Um. So the ranch that I was hunting is
- 38:12Speaker 1: a big ranch in it it borders right up against
- 38:15Speaker 1: the United States border. And the outfitter who set it up,
- 38:19Speaker 1: you know, had said, you know, you may see some
- 38:22Speaker 1: people crossing on the ramps. They crowd they used the
- 38:25Speaker 1: ranch across the border. And it also was close to
- 38:29Speaker 1: a pretty wild area in Arizona. So it's a good
- 38:31Speaker 1: place to cross, um said, nothing to worry about, but
- 38:35Speaker 1: you know, just be aware, he said, you may see
- 38:38Speaker 1: some army folks to folks on the Mexican army whatnot. Okay,
- 38:42Speaker 1: started sound like, um, what should I wear? It doesn't matter.
- 38:46Speaker 1: It's just gonna be you and me. We're gone. Um. So,
- 38:52Speaker 1: in the course of a week of hunting, we saw
- 38:57Speaker 1: it had to be it was well over a hundred
- 38:59Speaker 1: It was probably us two people who were crossing the border.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Now this ranch, in the words of the film Jeremiah Johnson,
- 39:06Speaker 1: molesting your hunt. Um, No, for the most part, right,
- 39:10Speaker 1: you'd see him on the roads. And now this ranch
- 39:13Speaker 1: was I say the roads. It was like the ranch
- 39:14Speaker 1: we were on. It's a big wild place off the grid.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Old um. You know, small stone house, cowboys on horseback,
- 39:23Speaker 1: same kind of deal. But you'd see these folks on
- 39:25Speaker 1: the ranch roads. Um, you know about like a line
- 39:28Speaker 1: of twenty people, you know, carrying their stuff going across
- 39:32Speaker 1: the border. Every water hole you'd often seen like water
- 39:35Speaker 1: jugs and whatnot. And so the outfitter who had been
- 39:38Speaker 1: hunting that ranch for some time said, we've seen people before,
- 39:41Speaker 1: but this is by far the most people we've ever seen.
- 39:46Speaker 1: And it was um after, as I said, after the
- 39:50Speaker 1: election policy ship. We didn't get to like why it
- 39:57Speaker 1: mattered that it was right after so right, so they're
- 40:01Speaker 1: expecting a policy shift, So there was a huge surge
- 40:04Speaker 1: of people crossing the border getting good. So we saw
- 40:08Speaker 1: lots of people. Didn't affect our hunt. And you know what,
- 40:12Speaker 1: what what would would would you be seeing like sneaking
- 40:17Speaker 1: or just just just traveling. They would be traveling in
- 40:21Speaker 1: a line traveling. It looked like it was almost organized, right,
- 40:25Speaker 1: like somebody was leading and everybody else was in single file.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Sometimes you'd see them on like carpet tape to the
- 40:33Speaker 1: bottom of the shoes and no not sneaking at all. Um.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And sometimes you'd see a group resting right stopping at
- 40:40Speaker 1: a spot, whether they're resting or waiting, you know, I'm
- 40:43Speaker 1: not quite sure. And so you know, with people crossing,
- 40:47Speaker 1: that's the flow of people is often controlled by the cartel.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Is just like the flow of drugs. So, you know,
- 40:53Speaker 1: we knew there was cartel activity in the area. And
- 40:57Speaker 1: the outfitter had said at the beginning of season, he
- 41:00Speaker 1: sends one of his guys to talk to one of
- 41:03Speaker 1: the guys from a cartel and says, hey, we're coming
- 41:05Speaker 1: to hunt. You know, we know you're here. We're gonna
- 41:08Speaker 1: be here. We're all good, right, you know, and there's
- 41:11Speaker 1: no problems, um, you know, and his his philosophy is generally, um,
- 41:17Speaker 1: you know, the cartel people are doing their thing. They
- 41:18Speaker 1: don't want to mess with us. They don't they don't
- 41:20Speaker 1: want to cause any trouble. So there was one day
- 41:23Speaker 1: we were driving on the roads, um, going to a
- 41:26Speaker 1: new hunting spot, and we ran into the truck from
- 41:28Speaker 1: other people on our hunting party, you know, raning into
- 41:30Speaker 1: each other on the road. We stopped and get out
- 41:32Speaker 1: of the trucks and we stopped to just chat and see, hey,
- 41:34Speaker 1: what are you seeing, where are you going? And as
- 41:37Speaker 1: we're doing that, we look up the road and we
- 41:38Speaker 1: see this this guy running you know, kind of trotting
- 41:41Speaker 1: at us. He's got um um you know, Semiauto military
- 41:46Speaker 1: rifle and he's in fatigues and we think, oh, here's
- 41:48Speaker 1: the guy from the army. And when he got closer
- 41:51Speaker 1: we realized this is no guy from the army. You know,
- 41:53Speaker 1: was not standard issue fatigues. So he came up speaking
- 41:58Speaker 1: Spanish and um, hey, what are you guys doing? And
- 42:02Speaker 1: uh say, hey, how are you? And we had a
- 42:06Speaker 1: cooler beer in the back of the truck. Not why
- 42:08Speaker 1: we were hunting be clear, but for after the hunt,
- 42:12Speaker 1: but it's it's key for the story. We said, hey,
- 42:15Speaker 1: would you like a cold beer? Race us? So we
- 42:17Speaker 1: gave him a game of beer and he asked for
- 42:20Speaker 1: more for he said, can I have some? This is
- 42:22Speaker 1: all in Spanish for my boss, and he points up
- 42:25Speaker 1: to hill and we look up at the top of
- 42:26Speaker 1: this plateau and you can see there's a huge encampment
- 42:29Speaker 1: of men up there, a whole bunch of people, and
- 42:33Speaker 1: so we gave him a couple more and then all
- 42:34Speaker 1: of a sudden, somebody comes and two other guys. Three
- 42:37Speaker 1: other guys come down, one in the lead, and the
- 42:40Speaker 1: man we're talking, he goes, oh, he's my boss. So
- 42:43Speaker 1: this was the guy in charge. So he comes up
- 42:44Speaker 1: and he's all smiles and we give some more beer
- 42:48Speaker 1: even still, and he says, oh, you know, where are
- 42:51Speaker 1: you guys hunting? What trucks are you driving? You know,
- 42:54Speaker 1: he want to know what rigs we were driving, where
- 42:57Speaker 1: we're gonna be. He want to know if we're seeing
- 42:58Speaker 1: any deer. And he actually as he said, oh if
- 43:00Speaker 1: you have some extra meat, had a quarter right here
- 43:03Speaker 1: for us. Yeah. Sure, Um did he give you any
- 43:07Speaker 1: hot tips? He did not give us any hot tips
- 43:09Speaker 1: about where they saw a couple out of him man.
- 43:13Speaker 1: But we said, you know, hey, we're just we're hunting.
- 43:17Speaker 1: We know you guys are working and we're just working
- 43:20Speaker 1: and all right, so long. And the one funny thing
- 43:24Speaker 1: was though we had a one of guy who was
- 43:27Speaker 1: with us, a really good photographer, had to get a
- 43:29Speaker 1: nice camera, pulls that camera up. They go no, no, no,
- 43:34Speaker 1: right away they like everyal serious and we just put
- 43:37Speaker 1: the cameras down, like no photos. They made very clear
- 43:40Speaker 1: no photos, and uh, we went on our way. We
- 43:44Speaker 1: just kept hunting. Yeah, we just kept didn't go running home. No,
- 43:47Speaker 1: but we didn't go running home. We kept hunting. I
- 43:49Speaker 1: wouldn't say like they gave us trouble or we felt threatened.
- 43:53Speaker 1: They were, you know, they but you realize you're talking
- 43:55Speaker 1: to people who would kill you if it was in
- 43:59Speaker 1: their best intro. But you're thinking, well, they don't really,
- 44:02Speaker 1: you know, they're doing their thing. They don't want trouble
- 44:04Speaker 1: with us, and so it's all right. But um, we
- 44:08Speaker 1: did keep the rifles in the house, you know. Um
- 44:12Speaker 1: we did not go out on the ranch roads at night.
- 44:15Speaker 1: You know, we stayed in the in the building at night.
- 44:17Speaker 1: We we did not go out after dark very much. Yeah,
- 44:20Speaker 1: I have a little bit of a hard time, not
- 44:22Speaker 1: a hard time of the story, but like I don't
- 44:24Speaker 1: I always want to stress, like nothing's ever happened, and
- 44:26Speaker 1: you know, and and and Jay works. Yeah nothing happened.
- 44:29Speaker 1: That's I know. I'm not saying I would count that
- 44:32Speaker 1: as something happening. Yeah, that happened, But I've never had
- 44:36Speaker 1: anything happened yet. I feel slightly uneasy in the coming
- 44:42Speaker 1: and going. It's intimidating, right, Like it's not super clear
- 44:46Speaker 1: what you're supposed to do at all points when you
- 44:48Speaker 1: cross with a gun, right, I've I've traveled to multiple
- 44:52Speaker 1: countries with guns before, never felt intimidated like crossing the
- 44:55Speaker 1: border there. Yeah, like it's somehow, um, there's like a
- 45:00Speaker 1: subjectivity to it. It's not like, oh you do this,
- 45:03Speaker 1: this and this. It feels like every interaction it feels
- 45:05Speaker 1: like there's Yeah, there's like a question mark lingering over.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Definitely go multiple ways at each interaction, and there's not
- 45:12Speaker 1: like one interaction. There's interactions, you know, three or four
- 45:16Speaker 1: of them as as you go through. But I feel
- 45:18Speaker 1: like that's been ironed out or smoothed out over the
- 45:21Speaker 1: over the years, And probably a lot has to do
- 45:24Speaker 1: with just the volume that Jay you know, takes through
- 45:27Speaker 1: there with his business, that there's less and less of
- 45:32Speaker 1: that because I'm sure if yeah, if it's quiet and
- 45:35Speaker 1: there's like the right corrupt corrupt police officer, then yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 1: the the lingering question is, hey, you know, can you
- 45:43Speaker 1: drop a twenty spot here to make things to get
- 45:47Speaker 1: your stamp as opposed to just I'm supposed to give
- 45:49Speaker 1: you the stamp because you're paperwork is proper, you know. Yeah, Yeahnie,
- 45:53Speaker 1: one time I had to do like a side transaction
- 45:55Speaker 1: with an official. Um, the the rifle question comes up
- 46:01Speaker 1: a lot, it's always different, but you way in advance way, Yeah,
- 46:08Speaker 1: because you have to get a This is something I
- 46:11Speaker 1: left out. Didn't leave it out, just hadn't gotten to
- 46:13Speaker 1: it yet. But when you're by that tag from the ranch,
- 46:20Speaker 1: you then enter into a hunting contract with the ranch,
- 46:24Speaker 1: and that hunting contract once it is signed, um, then
- 46:29Speaker 1: it basically allows you to get a gun permit from
- 46:33Speaker 1: the federal the Mexican federal government. Yeah. I think this
- 46:37Speaker 1: is one of the reasons why it's kind of an
- 46:39Speaker 1: elite group of hard players who goes down there to hunt,
- 46:41Speaker 1: because it's not you don't like just wake up one
- 46:43Speaker 1: morning decide you're gonna go down for the simple reason
- 46:45Speaker 1: that you have to, like do you have to? There's
- 46:49Speaker 1: a process, but it is like it's I don't know
- 46:53Speaker 1: the process with like a truck a gun, explain all
- 46:55Speaker 1: that well, and the gun process the length because we
- 46:59Speaker 1: turned in our weapon information summertimes yeah, yeah, summertime. Yeah.
- 47:07Speaker 1: And Jay likes to have his eyes out and Tea's
- 47:10Speaker 1: cross and just like kind of everything done and in
- 47:12Speaker 1: the bag to three months in advance because if you
- 47:15Speaker 1: get a permit back like one time happened to me,
- 47:18Speaker 1: and one of the numbers on the serial number was
- 47:21Speaker 1: off by a number and it cost me what it
- 47:25Speaker 1: cost me two days of hunting on that trip because
- 47:27Speaker 1: I had to basically hang out in Agua Priatta and
- 47:30Speaker 1: way as my new gun permit, had to go all
- 47:33Speaker 1: the way to Hermercio, the capital city of Sonora, and
- 47:35Speaker 1: then come all the way back. And it doesn't go
- 47:38Speaker 1: via facts. It's got to be original down there. And
- 47:41Speaker 1: it went on a bus and it came back on
- 47:44Speaker 1: a bus and our um, this is the only way
- 47:49Speaker 1: to do it. Because our serial number issue this time
- 47:54Speaker 1: was a lengthy or deal and that was on our
- 47:58Speaker 1: rental car or VN number. Rather, we had a VN
- 48:02Speaker 1: number issue, um, and that was the same deal. It's like,
- 48:06Speaker 1: you want that stuff and it just speaks to how
- 48:08Speaker 1: the world is different down there once you cross that border. Um,
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's like you can't really understand why they need what
- 48:16Speaker 1: they need, but they want it, you know, and it's
- 48:19Speaker 1: got to be done the way that they want it.
- 48:22Speaker 1: A lot of originals as far as documents go. You know,
- 48:26Speaker 1: we make copies just in case you need it for
- 48:29Speaker 1: a backup, but like they don't really like the copy thing.
- 48:31Speaker 1: They want to see originals. So yeah, most people will
- 48:34Speaker 1: just take their own vehicle through because I think I
- 48:35Speaker 1: would guess that most hunters that go through J's services
- 48:39Speaker 1: are from Arizona or within driving distance of Arizona. People
- 48:43Speaker 1: the d the d I y guys, Yeah, guys that
- 48:46Speaker 1: are fired about cous deer and um. Because just the
- 48:50Speaker 1: good old days. Yeah, the vehicle, the driver that's that's
- 48:56Speaker 1: going through, the vehicle has to be in your name,
- 49:00Speaker 1: the registration has to be in your name. Then numbers
- 49:03Speaker 1: have to all match up. Same thing goes with the
- 49:05Speaker 1: trailer that you're side by side is on if you're
- 49:08Speaker 1: using one, and it's a crucial piece of equipment, um,
- 49:12Speaker 1: and it all has to just match up. For us,
- 49:14Speaker 1: it's a little more difficult because we're flying into Tucson
- 49:17Speaker 1: because it's long drive from Montana, and we rent vehicles
- 49:20Speaker 1: that you that are allowed to go across the border.
- 49:22Speaker 1: You get to get Mexican insurance and you get to
- 49:25Speaker 1: make contracts from Enterprise and Alamo, the two companies that
- 49:30Speaker 1: let you take vehicles across. But basically their contract says
- 49:34Speaker 1: that you can. You actually get another form that says
- 49:37Speaker 1: permission to enter Mexico with this vehicle. But the most
- 49:40Speaker 1: important part is that the contract itself with your name
- 49:44Speaker 1: and Enterprise on there has the vehicle's VN number. Well,
- 49:47Speaker 1: it just so happens that Enterprise doesn't put their ven
- 49:50Speaker 1: numbers on the contract, especially the system I know, because
- 49:52Speaker 1: now you know they don't even know what the hell
- 49:54Speaker 1: car you're gonna take. No, you do all your paperworkies,
- 49:56Speaker 1: walk out and drive on off. It's just not in important.
- 50:00Speaker 1: You know. They have whatever system of checks and bounces
- 50:03Speaker 1: they have doesn't include the VN number. I'm sure it's
- 50:05Speaker 1: like in the system, but they don't need it on
- 50:08Speaker 1: the contract. Well, the Mexican government that issues you a
- 50:14Speaker 1: vehicle permit wants that the number on there, and they
- 50:18Speaker 1: don't care how enterprise operates. Yeah, so you just sort
- 50:22Speaker 1: of had to go into enterprise and say, hey, it's
- 50:25Speaker 1: very important, whatever you gotta do, make sure the vein
- 50:27Speaker 1: numbers on there. And unfortunately we had doubled VN numbers
- 50:31Speaker 1: as opposed to Ryan and I were the two drivers
- 50:34Speaker 1: and instead of having separate brand speaking new Ford Rangers.
- 50:39Speaker 1: You're funny to see because I think it like Ford Rangers.
- 50:41Speaker 1: I think it dudes in high school, like when I
- 50:43Speaker 1: was a kid in high school. Yeah, or an Old Rancher.
- 50:46Speaker 1: That's to me, that's like the classic Old Ranchers. That's
- 50:48Speaker 1: an irrigation track. Yeah, but uh yeah, and then the
- 50:53Speaker 1: MAS that what was the MAS the version of it? Yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: um like the B two or something like that. There's
- 50:58Speaker 1: also the Chevy Love remember that one, that's an irrigation
- 51:03Speaker 1: pro Those were nice. I didn't We can talk about
- 51:06Speaker 1: those trucks later. Yeah, I like those. Um So anyways,
- 51:11Speaker 1: that's kind of what it takes to get So once
- 51:13Speaker 1: you hit the border, do we want to start there
- 51:19Speaker 1: like four or four or five seven? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 1: this is public service stuff. I don't know. I don't
- 51:23Speaker 1: even care if it's not interesting to people. There's a
- 51:24Speaker 1: form fur four or five seven and yeah, not even
- 51:29Speaker 1: knows the form number. Beautiful man of the form. He
- 51:33Speaker 1: treats a form with respect, well, not disdained, he treats
- 51:37Speaker 1: with respect. But the only reason because if you don't,
- 51:40Speaker 1: then the people that you show the form to are
- 51:42Speaker 1: gonna laugh and turn you away. Then you don't get
- 51:45Speaker 1: to go cluse hunting. But a four or four or
- 51:47Speaker 1: five seven just said, it's basically telling the US government
- 51:51Speaker 1: that you are leaving the country with goods that cost
- 51:54Speaker 1: money that are like an excess of some value, probably
- 51:58Speaker 1: five or more. That way, when you come back with them,
- 52:02Speaker 1: there's no funny business about that you left it or
- 52:06Speaker 1: you sold it or whatever. It's just track. You're like
- 52:09Speaker 1: that you're bringing stuff down to sell, no, I'm sorry,
- 52:13Speaker 1: or that you bought it somewhere else, because we used
- 52:15Speaker 1: to put optics and stuff on there too, but now
- 52:18Speaker 1: we just do rifles. Yeah, it could go. I used
- 52:20Speaker 1: to my scope, serial number, bonos. They never care about
- 52:24Speaker 1: that stuff because the gun thing. You want to show that, like,
- 52:27Speaker 1: you didn't pick up a gun down in Mexico, so
- 52:30Speaker 1: they basically want to see the gun, check the serial numbers,
- 52:33Speaker 1: and you're on your way. Then that's not high stress, no,
- 52:37Speaker 1: pretty easy. You go into Mexico and the first stop
- 52:43Speaker 1: is that the aduana, which I think is just how
- 52:46Speaker 1: you say port of entry. Cal tell me what aduana means.
- 52:52Speaker 1: I don't know the first letter of that ed wana
- 52:55Speaker 1: A d u A n A okay on it. And uh,
- 53:00Speaker 1: it's kind of all clustered together. You have the UM,
- 53:04Speaker 1: the police, and then you also have the like Tourism office,
- 53:09Speaker 1: I guess is what you can call that, right, maybe
- 53:11Speaker 1: Immigration Office of sorts UM. And then you also have
- 53:14Speaker 1: another office that deals with UM vehicles and it's kind
- 53:18Speaker 1: of all together. And when one one and a half
- 53:21Speaker 1: buildings cuts. Oh, but you go to a dude and
- 53:29Speaker 1: he does a thing. Yeah. Then you go to another
- 53:32Speaker 1: dude and he does a photo copy of a thing.
- 53:35Speaker 1: You go to another dude and like, he does a thing.
- 53:37Speaker 1: Then you go back to the first dude and be like, look,
- 53:40Speaker 1: it's a it's a room. It's a room with four doors,
- 53:46Speaker 1: three walls of glass with people behind the three walls
- 53:50Speaker 1: of glass. The other wall is just a wall some
- 53:52Speaker 1: posters on it that says you can't smuggle you know,
- 53:55Speaker 1: rare reptiles out of here um, and yeah, you go
- 53:59Speaker 1: to one you get it and they're like, yeah, go
- 54:01Speaker 1: see them over there. And then you go over there.
- 54:02Speaker 1: You get a stamp, and then they say go over
- 54:04Speaker 1: there and the guy makes a photo copy. And then
- 54:06Speaker 1: you go back to the first window and you go, hey,
- 54:08Speaker 1: here you go, here's everything you need, and then here's
- 54:10Speaker 1: some money. And then they say, okay, thank you, you're
- 54:13Speaker 1: out the door. If you like, if you went to
- 54:14Speaker 1: Subway and every one of the little bins of condiments
- 54:20Speaker 1: had an attendant. Yeah, and they were in different areas
- 54:25Speaker 1: of the of the building. Bell Peppers. Yes, please, okay,
- 54:28Speaker 1: you will now go across the restaurant for your mail
- 54:31Speaker 1: and talk to the gentleman with the mail. Um. So
- 54:35Speaker 1: that's pretty much just to get your tourist visa. Then
- 54:39Speaker 1: you go um at the same window that you paid
- 54:42Speaker 1: for the tourist visa. You gotta get your vehicle permit.
- 54:45Speaker 1: That's where we had to run in with the with
- 54:47Speaker 1: the n That's always the trouble spot, always a trouble spot. Yeah.
- 54:50Speaker 1: And uh so once we knew we had just redo
- 54:54Speaker 1: the contract went in a big deal. Nice, very nice gal. Uh,
- 54:58Speaker 1: Pamela should give Pamela props because she she she knew
- 55:02Speaker 1: what to do. Unfortunately in her she has that we
- 55:04Speaker 1: were there's some haste and classic situation too. She's like
- 55:08Speaker 1: the senior person there simultaneously training training, Yeah, which I
- 55:14Speaker 1: feel like an enterprise. They're constantly in training mode to
- 55:18Speaker 1: pick up in the in the customs of Mexico. Not
- 55:22Speaker 1: this time, last time someone called him. Two times ago
- 55:27Speaker 1: someone called him, mom, is this what you're talking about?
- 55:32Speaker 1: Which I thought was an insult, just sounds insult. I guappo.
- 55:36Speaker 1: That doesn't sound good, but in fact it means handsome one.
- 55:40Speaker 1: That wasn't El guapo. But she looked at his passport.
- 55:45Speaker 1: She liked what she said. Yeah, I think that was
- 55:47Speaker 1: a little instigated, but was by John Snow. But either
- 55:49Speaker 1: either way, UM, the vehicle permits. Uh, they need to
- 55:56Speaker 1: go out, look at the the number on the vehicle,
- 55:58Speaker 1: come back inside with you. Then you do some paperwork,
- 56:02Speaker 1: you get some stamps, you make some signatures, you leave,
- 56:05Speaker 1: go make some photocos. There's a lot of rim roll
- 56:07Speaker 1: about the weight of the vehicle. So we even met
- 56:11Speaker 1: a guy that likes to make an his trailer. He
- 56:14Speaker 1: makes a fake weight plate and tries to make it
- 56:17Speaker 1: all the official looking and riveted onto his trailer so
- 56:21Speaker 1: in a really easily to locate place so that he
- 56:25Speaker 1: can be like, look, h here's your g v g
- 56:28Speaker 1: v W. Yeah, and he just like made a make
- 56:30Speaker 1: believe one to to to not have to argue about
- 56:33Speaker 1: it so much. Yeah, it costs you a little bit more.
- 56:35Speaker 1: There's sort of trying to like it sounds like from
- 56:37Speaker 1: what Jake understand, they're trying to restrict commercial vehicles that
- 56:41Speaker 1: are not permanent coming down from the US. And as
- 56:43Speaker 1: soon as your truck has four doors instead of too,
- 56:46Speaker 1: it jumps some class and whatever ends up costing you
- 56:50Speaker 1: another ten dollars US. It's not a big deal. So far,
- 56:54Speaker 1: we've done a good job of not making CU's deer
- 56:57Speaker 1: hunting too popular. If that's what you're worried about. God, yeah,
- 57:01Speaker 1: it's good. Yeah, yeah, no, this we give ourselves a
- 57:05Speaker 1: day and we start at the butt crack. McDonald's is
- 57:09Speaker 1: barely open because you want to get your last gets
- 57:14Speaker 1: his annual McDonald's. Yeah, you want to get your last
- 57:16Speaker 1: McDonald's at about six thirty am, and then you head
- 57:19Speaker 1: to the border by seven and uh, you know, I
- 57:23Speaker 1: forget what time it was. It was to thirty when
- 57:26Speaker 1: we left. Oh, the Eagles. The Eagles alcohol free year
- 57:30Speaker 1: has ended, and he's entered into a sugar free quarter
- 57:36Speaker 1: of a year. I think I'm feeling better after two
- 57:40Speaker 1: weeks of no sugar than I did after the whole
- 57:42Speaker 1: year of no drinking. And I'm funnier. According to my
- 57:47Speaker 1: old lady, Yeah, yeah, he was doing a year end Yeah,
- 57:52Speaker 1: he was doing like a year end review with his
- 57:54Speaker 1: wife to see how everything's going. And she kind of
- 57:56Speaker 1: is just not as funny as he wants was what's
- 57:58Speaker 1: count's deep man cuts? Well, she did it with a
- 58:03Speaker 1: wink yea because you were yeah, because you never had
- 58:05Speaker 1: you never like lightened the load with a beer or anything.
- 58:07Speaker 1: You know, no, no, but there. I don't think it
- 58:12Speaker 1: was too thirty quite yet, because we probably had to
- 58:14Speaker 1: make one. It was probably to thirty when we actually
- 58:15Speaker 1: started driving towards. So after oh, we're not done yet.
- 58:19Speaker 1: At the first stop at the edge Wana, so you
- 58:22Speaker 1: get all, you get your tourist visa, you get your
- 58:24Speaker 1: vehicle permits. Then you have to check your guns with
- 58:28Speaker 1: the cops. The cops, so you bring them out over
- 58:32Speaker 1: to the cops, say you need to check our guns.
- 58:34Speaker 1: You have your you have your cartouches with you too,
- 58:38Speaker 1: but you have your I just I want to interject here,
- 58:43Speaker 1: like fact problem who who you are? The problem? Um
- 58:51Speaker 1: has this amazing knowledge of how language works through many
- 58:57Speaker 1: years of study and practice. Yet that is true, it
- 59:01Speaker 1: is subverted by this old man Michigander mentality of like, man,
- 59:08Speaker 1: it's just too late to learn Spanish. My chance. So
- 59:14Speaker 1: I'm just gonna willfully remain outside of even attempting to try.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Security formed a sentence that I'm still proud of Yeah. No,
- 59:29Speaker 1: that was a good one. I said, um, uh, something
- 59:39Speaker 1: to the effect of, K has no familia v v
- 59:47Speaker 1: and est casa and it's totally wrong. But they looked
- 59:54Speaker 1: at me for men in A light bulb went off
- 59:59Speaker 1: and they knew what I was trying to say. It'd
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: be like if someone came to in English and said
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: something to the effect of, um, why is no family
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to live in that house? I'm in with me the
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: one i'm And when Steve saw the light bulb of
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: recognition go off, I told everyone about it. Basically spiked
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: the football and ran down the tunnel and went home
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: at work. Here has done glass? Yes, glass, yes, yeah, Yeah,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: it's really a shame. And I gave up really early.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I gave up early. I hadn't. I wasn't even I
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: gave up fifteen years ago. It's all out of the
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: next generation. Now my shoulders are in they've always been
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: in Spanish. It's like I can't do it a man,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: as my friend, uh Matt Cook will remind you, Um,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: a man's got his limits. I'm sorry, You're honest, quite
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: all right. So yeah, the cops, Uh was that was
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: that a jab? Because I just said, cartouches just needed
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: to be sad, Steve, that's please. Uh. They look at
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: your you have your gun permit that they came from
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the federal government and has your rifle. In my case,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: had a rifle and a shotgun on there with the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: serial numbers, the make, model UM and then all the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: gun permits, say a hundred cartouches, which means you have
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a hundred cartridges. No one cares about that's just one numbers. Again,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: they don't care about it. But I feel like early
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: on the first couple of times I went, they would
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: always want to see the cartridges. They would look to
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: see that the cartridges were of the same caliber that
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: your rifle was. But the last few years they haven't.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: And I had them checked when I crossed a couple
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: of years ago, he didn't. So again, it could just
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: depend on the port of entry or whatever. But they
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: check it that. They take your passport for a minute,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I'm guessing they make a copy, they give you a stamp,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: or maybe they check your you know your name, make
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: sure you're not a wanted man in Mexico. They come back,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: give your passport back, give you a stamp. Then you're
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: finally done at the Idwana and you head over to
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: the military just right across from the gas station. They
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: used to have a great area. Ship. Man, it went
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: from being like a crazy Mexican gas station with like
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: great food and kind of like it was like a
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: little bit puzzling what was going on to being like
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: it's like a seven eleven. Yeah, yeah, nothing that's not
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: in a plastic bag to consume. No. I used to
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: be like kind of like, what is this play oh ship,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: look at those tacos. But now it's like, now they
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: have taco donuts. Yeah, they got the rollers with the
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: hot dog. It's just I don't know what happened many
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: new ownership. I guess bathrooms are Anyways, it was a
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: taco donut. You park at the gas station, it was like,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I gotta get one. I don't understand what this is.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Probably I think I don't know. As a newcomer camera
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: you can maybe well you've done it twice, and you've
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: done it twice. Now cal too, you're on your second trip.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: But I always felt like the parking at the gas
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: station and walking over to the military, that's when I
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: started to have the feeling of like, Okay, this is
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: getting a little bit different, you know that wh I'm
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: used to in the beginning part, everything is pretty like official.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: There's cops and you know, it's like type when you're
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: parking a gas station parking lot, it's a very truck
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: stoppy gas station, a lot of activity. There's no parking
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: area at the military. It's just right across the street.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: You park and grab your gun case and now you're
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: a military compound. Yeah, and you have a gun and
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: with bullets cartridges, and now you're just gonna walk across
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: the street in Old next a go and into a
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: military compound. And the thing is in the US, if
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: you go into a military base, there are you know,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I mean, there are many people in there who are
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: will deploy and you know, will do service, right, But
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: the base is not like a thing that's fighting. Doesn't
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: happen there, No, But when you under a military base here,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: it's like it's a military like it's like conducting missions.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: It's like a base. It's a base, like a military
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: that's conducting missions in its own country, which we don't do.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: You know in the guys, you don't do that under
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: a very special circumstances. But these are guys who are
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: sort of like actively engaged in a I don't know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: you know, it's dramatic called a civil war, but I mean,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: you know, like actively engaged in so like combat operations
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: against armed militia equivalents. Yeah, and you'll be kind of
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: remind into that a lot of him because a lot
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: of both the soldiers and police that you'll see, especially
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: when they're out in trucks, they're wearing masks, you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: covering their faces. Just a very different kind of military base.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: It's like an outpost. It's interesting. I ever thought about that.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: That's just to protect their identities, so where they're not
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: at work. That's interesting. So, yeah, you walk in there,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: you tell the fellow at the gate that you're there
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: to check your rifles or we usually have with us
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: a fellow by the name of Beto spelled with a
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: B incredible arm wrestler. Incredible. I couldn't beat him. Um
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Beto could have been a linebacker, yeah in his day.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Um and uh so he's with us as well as well.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: We get another fixture with us to cross the border too,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: named Salsa, and they're just there in case things go
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: a little side of ways, Like you have a doubled
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: up vent number and they're there so that in case
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: someone um on the Mexican side doesn't want to try
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: to speak English with you or trying to work it
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: out in sort of a Spanglish broken you know, English
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Spanish way, that they can step in and say, okay,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: what needs to happen to keep his thing moving on?
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: So betos with us. He says, hey, we're here to
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: check our guns. They say, okay, go over there and
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: stand in the it's like a little outbuilding basically uh
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: cement or brick walls, tin roof, and there used to
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: be a mannequin in there that was dressed in a
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: in a military outfit. Yeah, then his pants broke. Yeah,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: well you were poking him and his outfit and his
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: pants and his pants and everyone was uncomfortable. But I
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: don't want to like put his pants back on them.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: So you stand there with his pants around his angles
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: and had like a broken finger. You know, I bet
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: you they had a GoPro running. And that's just one
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: of those like behind the scenes Mexican TV like like
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: to do. It just gets you to squirm. You know,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: You're sitting there looking at the manneque with no pants on,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: and it's like hand was broken away. He's like giving
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: everybody the finger. I remember taking a picture of that,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: but I never used it. But then they replaced him
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: with two rocket launchers. Yes, now there's nuts decorative with
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: rocket launchers. It is so much more tidy now like
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: now they like again. I think it's it might be
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: because of the volume and why. It's the good old
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: days now, but it's just like now. And it used
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: to take sometimes an hour plus there and now you
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: go in there. The dude comes over again. Yeah, you
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: showed him the paperwork. He checks the serial numbers, passport.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: He leaves with him for five or ten minutes, comes
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: back with a stamp on your gun permit. It's basically
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: saying you have entered the country and you have your rifle.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: You get to go. And now the cops and the
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: federal military, I know that you in this gun on
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: our here. That's right. And he walked back across the
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: street and get in the vehicle and followed betto tier Ranch.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: And then a magical thing happens. You drive down like
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: a highway and then a dusty road and another dusty road,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: and then like nearly impassable roads and then all of
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a sudden you're on a place that you can't scratch
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: the surface of. Nothing's around, but just like quiet wild yeah, ranches,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the size of national parks. Yeah, the quiet he should
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: we should talk about that. It's like all that, all
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: that apprehension, and all of a sudden you're like in
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: a place that you're in a play, You're in an
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: environment place that you just are not going to replicate. No, relax, Oh,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: look at that tree has thirty five bluebirds in it.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: That's night just goes, it goes on and on and
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: on and on and on and on and on. Do
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: you think a hundred years ago they were more people
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: in that country than there are. I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I don't know why I wouldn't be surprised at some
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: point that for whatever economic factors that used to support
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: more people than does. General urbanization's happened in the last
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: hundred years for sure. So it's a hard place to scratch.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Shot of living, Yeah, and the mechanization of of running.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Those copper minds that are there probably did, probably had
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: more folks working in them prior prior to right now.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: I would think it legitimately might be more pristine today
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: than it was a hundred years ago when you get
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: in those ranches. Yeah, Like you know, certain counties in
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the American Great Plains like lose population. But I wouldn't
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: be surprised. You see a lot more um stuff that
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: was once something and isn't anymore than you do things
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: that are being made now. Yeah, absolutely, because just like
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: things like you guys, I guess that used to be
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: like a thing. Yeah that's a good description. Yeah, where
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: people hung out. But you know, it's it's really stunning
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: to be down there. It's definitely worth the hassle. I
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: love it. I love it. It's great and there are
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: and you get the sense there's a thing we'll talk
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: about like in Western I guess it's true everywhere now
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: it's true. And any kind of um, I shouldn't say
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: any kind most kinds of like I would say most
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: kinds of big game hunting in in in this country,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: there are so many it's the I would say, it's
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: the norm to have it be that someone lays eyes
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: on most animals, like someone sees most animals, like in
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: heavily hunted deer areas, someone sees every dear right often
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: it's just like kind of like expected that someone else
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: has seen it. But you just get the sense too,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: there's like, um, you sense that there's like just deer
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: that go unseen. Oh, there were parts of that ranch,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: the especially up behind in the up behind the ranch
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: house that dear dear dying of old age in there,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: no doubt, you can't see him. You can't see anything.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Just the whole mountain sides you can't see. You just
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: can't get a vantage and some of that stuff. But
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: there's deer sign everywhere. Yeah, but no one ever goes
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: on that hill. There's no reason for anyone to ever
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: go there. We had a ranch your ones tell us
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: on another ranch behind it. We had a ranch ones
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: talk about a part of the ranch and said that
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: he hadn't been there in three years. Wow. Yeah, that's
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: that's amazing. Yeah. I mean they most of them probably
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: have one, but Carrol that rides almost every day and
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: it hits you know, probably takes some two weeks to
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: do the loop right through the whole place, and that annually.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: They have a party. It's a party is to get together.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: It's a work thing. They have a name for it,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: but basically they hire a bunch of hands and they
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: it's like moving cattle day, round up and moving cattle,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: trying to get cattle out of the mountains. Yeah. Around
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: here it's called the shipping party. There you go, it's
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: not called a roundup. Well, the roundup happens, but that's
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: not a party. Once you ship the calves, then you
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: get a party. Oh I got you. Yeah, that's when
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the work works done. Yeah. So there's not a lot
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: of people, not a lot of you don't you just
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: don't see a lot of boot tracks if any ann
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: I don't know that we did see any tracks. The
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: way you hunt the stuff is you hunted. Um. I
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: would describe it like it's very good, sort of gross
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: too close. Um, not gross, like oh that's gross, but gross,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: meaning like whole entirety where you kind of go down
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: these spots and the first thing you want to do
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: is just start out being in any anywhere we can
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: just see tons of ship right, let's get up and
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: you want to see a lot looking at hillsides. Um,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: it's not so much to your I think every time
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: we go, you get to a point where you're you're
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: looking in a in a targeted fashion. But early on
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: you're just trying to like you're just looking kind of
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: like looking where you can see, and what you can
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: see is hillsides, like when you're on the hillside looking
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: at hillside, like the things laid out for you, like
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: flat ground is hard to observe what's going on. It's
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: not that they're not there. I'm sure they're there, but
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: you go to the places they're like most easily to survey,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: and you get up high and look and just try
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: to find areas of activity. And then over the days,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: if you have you would be probably I would not
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: do it. Um, I would not do it with a
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: fewer than four days. Yeah, I would even say seven,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: say I would not. I would be like, man, I'm
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: not you know, it would be fun, but four would
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: be light. Yeah. Five We did five just now and
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: it was light. It takes, be honest, and I did
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: a lot of talking over just glassing on the way, um,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: you know, back to Tucson from from the ranch, and um,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: you know, I still find it very hard to properly
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: wedge into my brain the actual scale of the animal,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: like it is so small, and then that the size
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: of that animal in relation to the you know, the
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: flora down there. All you know is that a big ocatillo,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: is that a smaller ocatio? You know, it's just not
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: that familiar yet. And then I am scanning the hillside
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: the way I would a mule here, scanning four a
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: mule deer at that speed, and it's too fast for
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: the scale of accous deier for my for my eyes
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and I and I would know it, but I'm so
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I spent so many hours looking for mule here. That's
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: still I can't differentiate between the two yet. So then
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I have to like stop and nice you're talking about
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: your technique, because you kind of agreed with that, like
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: you're just moving too fast. We'll tell people your observation
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: about you know, whatever the hell skill is. Yeah, this
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: is an old saying, but buddy of mine, who likes
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: to gamble, always says, uh, luck is where skill meets opportunity.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: And I found for for me, locating a CU's deer
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: is where persistence in glassing meets movement. Like if that
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: once you said it, I was like I once you
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: said it, I was like, to be honest, I would
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: say that the ones I spot or maybe more are
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: because I pause and catch something move a tail flicks,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: it steps. It's because like I catch something move I
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: catch a movement. Yeah, well, I mean it can it
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: can be. I mean those are like the big movements
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: that you at, you know, like an actual body walking
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: or the tail flick is pretty big one. But a
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: lot of times you pick up like them chewing their cut,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: and that movement right there is what tips them off. Yeah,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: you have to you can't just scan, you don't. You
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: don't do it moving. You have to do move, stop, move, pause, observe,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: And it bothers your eyes to do it. But I
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: roll my eye go and like check everything. I stop
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: and don't just look. Like you could get in the
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: trap of like looking at the site picture through your binoculars,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: but rather than looking sort of like studying the site picture,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: you then are moving your eyeballs around. So as you're
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: looking through a Peri bonnoculars at a hillside, however a
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: thousand yards away, which be kind of close actually, but
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: you're looking and you have this round despite the move
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: What the movies will tell you on a person of
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: the movie looks through binoculars, they're seeing two circles. They're
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: shadowy around the edges, you're actually looking at a clean circle,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: and within that circle, you have to move of your
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: eyes around and check everything. You check every under every tree,
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: and move it. It's it's taxing on your eyes. But
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: typically it's like that, all of a sudden, something moves.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Oftentimes within my site picture through my binoculars, I will
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: in my peripheral vision see a movement, and then I
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: don't move my binoculars. That just like move my eyes over.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: It sounds funny, but like like move your eyes over
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: to that part of that site picture to see what
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: it was that moved, and you'd be like, oh, it's
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: a bird. It's like that level of movement, like a
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: bird flicking in a bush. I think this is what
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: you're talking about. I think the most important piece of
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: gear you can bring on this thing is a tripod
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: for your binoculars because you have to do the movement,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: because you can't do what we're talking about. And I
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: totally agree with you guys, like that's how you found them,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: that they're moving. But if you're hand holding binoculars and
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: you're scanning a hillside, you'll never catch any of this
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: stuff we're talking about because you don't when you're scanning.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: You don't catch You don't catch birds. No, I'd pick
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: up I pick up road runners, all kinds of little birds,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: you up rodents. It's like all movement. Not only you
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: just see one, but a lot of times it's just
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: that it's like some picked up a pair of dose
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: two dos um and these are like gray you know,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: gray colored cus deer. If you can imagine, their backdrop
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: is gray rock, as if they changed color to meet
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: to match the rock perfectly. Um. And they were four
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: hundred yards away maybe, and I could not see those
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: dough and I just got yeah, but they're incredibly difficult
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: animals to spot, they really are. And what she said
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: cal about the scale. That was the one thing I
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: struggled with that moving my binoculars too much, too much scanning.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: But there'd be spots. You know, you look at spots
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: and you think, all, I can imagine seeing a deer there, right,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: And every once in a while they're okay, there is
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: one coming across this yellow, open slope. But what I
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: was looking at was much smaller than what I was imagining.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: You know, you look at the plants next to it
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: and you realize your scale was all off. What I
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: was looking for was something much bigger than what is
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: actually there. I often question my range finder. Like two
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: nights ago, I crept out to where we knew one
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: was bedded, and I was like, it's gonna be like
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: six hundred yards away, but I kept getting those three
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: m like this one's gonna be messed up. I'm like
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: tapping it and like mentally you're like, okay, it can
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: be a little off, but not half off, not half
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: the distance. It's amazing how three d yards. Sometimes you
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: pick one up glass and you're looking at him and
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: it's pretty close, you know, and you're like, oh sweet,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: and then you just pull your by knox down and
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: you look over the top of them just to see
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: where it is with the naked eye, and you can't.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: You think, well, there's no way that three yards. I
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: can't see this animal. Put your by knox up there.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: He is playing his day broadside Buknox down just gone.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: A common conversation is something like, oh, there's one. So
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I was like where, I don't know. I don't want
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: to take my eyes off, and then I'll like I'll
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: then I'll what I explain where it is, and so
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: like really like market with a bunch of ship. It's
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: a bush of tree is dump. But I'll like go
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: up real quick to the skyline and pick off some
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: feature on the skyline and then zip back down to
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: find my dear and then be like it's under whatever.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, and your heart's like frozen because you're like, oh,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: they hope they're gonna he's gonna vanish. Kevinus are fine
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: and one not moving. And it was that you saw
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: its salts nose, the shine off its nose. It has
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: nothing to do with what's that shiny black thing? Yeah,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: there's no shiny black things in the bush. It was
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: that deer was so unlucky. Yeah, and COO's deer nose
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: for reference, would be about the let's say the base
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: of a pop cam in in size, like the shine
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: off the base of a popcam. How far were you
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: to us for one of these? But yeah, I saw
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: jet black jet black spot in a bush. That's who
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: I tipped them off. If it's not movement, it's also
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: um a certain sunlight at certain angles on the on
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: their hide. Yeah, bull betray them. Uh. Some of the
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: best conditions the loca them are when the sun blasts
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: in a hillside in the morning, they can they can
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: make them pop. And then there's like there's conflicting theories
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: about this, but they're they're they're not. They don't have
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: a wide comfort and they're not I don't think they
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: have like a huge range of degree. What am I
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: trying to say that their their window of comfort for
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: temperature is narrow. I mean they seem to play the
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: sun a lot, and like they play like shadow shade
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: not shade. On cold nights, they're like they seem to
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: like when the sun his still side, they just really
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: seemed like the basket. It's where the sun the hillside.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: You're looking and looking, look, there's nothing there. Also in
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: the sun gets kind of intense on the hillside, and
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: also one's just there and you're like, oh, he must
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: have just stood up, because it's no way he walked
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: in there. And they'll stand turn sideways to the sun
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: with just kind of like this like relaxed look on
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: their face, not doing anything, and just like absorb the
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: sun for some period of time. Um, but then they
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: don't like that and then they slip around the earth
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: side of the hill to get in the shade. Yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: I don't know. I wish I knew what that comfort
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: range was for a cuz here, but yeah, if you're
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: gonna set your thermometer for that, it's like an old grandma. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: they like it between sixty eight and seventy two or
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: like whatever the joke is, right, something like that. For sure,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: they don't any fat on him, right, no thin hide,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: no fat tons of surface area relative to mass. Uh.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: We gotta talk about your last your last night of hunting,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: and just that how comfortable. The other question for me
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: would be to truly determine how comfortable or confident these
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: deer are in their hiding ability, because it seems to
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: me like once they find a spot to bed down,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: they're like, nothing's gonna find me, so they can walk
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: as close as they can. And Kevin, you had that
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: on on the same day as that you found your
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: buck by looking at the spot on his nose, right,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: you had um Carrol come up. Carroll come up and
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: and uh, I'd seen a really nice buck, and I'd
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: seen three dos And I kind of made a push
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: halfway up that ridge to to see if I can
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: get closer and get a good look at him. And
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I get there and I hear someone talking, and it's
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: it's a guy on a horse like kind of in
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere, hanging out. Yeah, like the one
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: the phone booth as I preferred to it up there.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: It's like the one spot where you got two bars
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: on your cell phone. And he was sitting there talking away.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: He got two dogs running around with him. And after
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: about fifteen minutes, he kind of rides off, and it
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: was a little perturbed that I had made this push
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: and these deer, and uh, I guess it was they honest,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: and Anthony, I think, kind of slid lower on the
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: hill and that guy wasn't gone fifteen minutes, and those
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: doughs stood up. They had never moved. They were about
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: a hundred and ten yards hundred forty yards from somewhere
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: in there. And he sat there on his horse with
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: two dogs running around, and he rode out right next
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: to him and they sat tight in that bush. They
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: never moved. Then the buck I ended up shooting. Um,
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: he saw me, right, that's one of the only deer
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: that I found, Like, but you don't see me. He was.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: He was pretty confident that you know he saw me,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: that I that I didn't know where he was. Well
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: it's really hard to see him like that. It was
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: a good spot, and when they are under that brush
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: like that, an old bush and the shadows, it's very
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: difficult to see him. We spotted over the course of
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: the week very few bedded dear. The ones that we
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: did kind of gave themselves up. They were skylined or whatever,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: but very few. Like you know, meal deer hunting and
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: things like that, you pick them out underneath the bush
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: or a shrub. These things vaporize, you know, right in
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: front of you. Sometimes you're looking at them. They step
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: behind a bush and then they never come out. No
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: one ever sees them again. I've been in places where
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: they tend to they'll bet up on like open hillside,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: but they'll get under a big oak or something to bed.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: But these guys just go in there like cocktail rabbits.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: They disappear, they go into it. We we we've all,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: we've been toying for you with this idea, like can
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: you like there's a thing called rattling a deer in
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: for people who aren't super familiar with all this stuff,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: is basically um at a certain point in their cycle,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: their annual cycle, and they're getting I think particularly when
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: they're getting ready to go into breeding season, they're doing
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: a lot of sparring, you know, like different box these
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: kind of like casual fights. You know, they'll get into
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: just sort of measure up who's the man who's not
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: um and they fight a lot. No way to lure
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: deer in is to to make the sound of things
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: of deer fighting. Uh. It's particularly like associated with white
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: tail hunting. You clack, you like literally take two antlers
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: and bang them together and make the noise of deer
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: fighting and dear. Well, yeah, probably out of like a
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: lot of curiosity. Maybe it means that there's a doe
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: over there and they're fighting over Anyways, they'll come in
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: and we keep toying around with like various such situations
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: of trying to like rattle to see how these like
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: little desert white tails will respond to rattling. Call. And
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: I are watching a deer and it's bed um at.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: It was yards away, and we're like, let's watch him
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: and then rattle and see what he if he likes it,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: And Cal starts clacking away and the second Cal starts clacking.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: I'm watching this buck and all he does is one
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: not both, but one of his ears moves back and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: then it goes back to where it was, and like
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: he just doesn't care. I'm gonna take note, I'm gonna
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: write it down, but I'm not getting And that deer
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: we had found a deer there was that distance way
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: and started to stalk it, and they got moved at
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: one point and I got into where I got into
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: where I was three d yards away from where the
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: deal was betted, could not pick it out. And it's
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: our last dayver hunt. It's getting darker, darker, darker. It
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: gets to be around five o'clock. It's dark at six.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I find another dough with a smaller buck, and Cal
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: is through in the spot. He's go watching the buck
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be getting, and that buck's not a
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: hundred yards away, hundred fifty yards away. And I shoot
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: the other buck, and Chel said, all that buck did
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: was move his ear. Yeah, the buck in the bed
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: that I've been burning my eyeball out on, hoping he
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: would stand up to give Steve a shacht when his
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: compatriot there on the hillside where where his rival got
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: uh ultimately killed by Steve um, will you make it sound?
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: He goes drawn out in a very close to his
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: bedded position. All that buck did was move an year,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: take note, and then move the ear back in position.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: And that was it. And I never never got an
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: inkling of like, oh, he's gonna stand up, and it's
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: just like he took notes. He's like nine yards to
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: my left some jackasses making a loud noise, and then
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: a hundred yards down there, my buddy just got shot
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and killed. Noted, I'm gonna stay in my bed. That's
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: why you do, like I was saying, I just stayed
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: in my bed. It's amazing, amazing. But yeah, I mean,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: between the it's just it's such a nice feeling down there.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: You just feel, um, you get get a good primitive
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: feeling feeling. You get a good feeling of like being
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: in the wild. Um, lots of bird activity. Um. Seeing
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: the ha Alina's kind of randomly do their thing is
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: very entertaining. Um. I mean, it's it's a bizarre landscape
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: because some of the hiking is so pleasurable, and then
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: you hit the wrong slope and it's just like walking
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: on you know, softball, like walking on baseballs. I felt
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: when we were packing your back out, I felt five
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: times on that slope um dog ownership. Dog ownership is
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: there's a different dog the human dog relationship is. I
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: don't want to it's not I don't want to. I
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: definitely use the word antiquated. There's also just a shifting
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: perspective on dogs. Um, there are on these large cattle ranches,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: there are like packs of dogs. Yeah dogs you I'm assuming, dude,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: have not been named. Large groupings of dogs that kind
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: of just like fend for themselves. They almost have a relation,
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: like they almost have a relationship to the property almost
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: like like it's a dog. Yeah, like a hog might
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: have Like he's like, yeah, I'm gonna give a shit
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: about people, but I'm here there's food. You know, I
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: hang around here and there's there's food around here. Yeah,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: it's a mutualistic relationship, right, Like the dogs are gonna
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: bark when something strange shows up. They are gonna probably
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: give Kyle tell Yeah. Um, these ones definitely had a
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: hurting instinct. Yeah, there were something they're watching those sheep
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: for sure. That sheep. Then I'm sure that none. They
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: love nothing more to chase and cattle around. Yeah, and
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: then I think the dogs get you know, some sort
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: of feed. Um, not not in the way we do it,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: not in the very very soft way we do it.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I've you know, they feed them almost like how yeah,
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: like how you slop hogs. It's just an earlier version
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: of domestication. And uh so there's a benefit there. And
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: then there's also I think a benefit to There is
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: a very serious kyote population out there, and so these
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: dogs instead of being on hyper aler all night if
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: they were outside fending for themselves, they're in a in
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: a spot that's got enough mark of man to where
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the coyotes are, and the cats and stuff were kind
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: of giving them, uh a wider berth is my guesses
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: how that kind of trade off works. We struck off
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: from this ranch house one morning on foot and right
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: away there's like this little dog with us, and we
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: holler at it and be all mean to it and
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: throw rocks. Yeah, not trying to hit it, trying to
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: spook it. But the dog knows the rock throwing routine
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: enough for when I went to pick up a rock
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: and it took off, he's been and spend his whole
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: life getting pummeled rocks. And then we're like, okay, we
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: took care of that problem, and we'd walk another half
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: mile and then here's this dog be again, and we
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: do the holding over again, and then we did it
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: three times, three times like legit ran the dog off,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: and eventually he just Now we're two miles away, but
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: he's still with us. And then we're like, all right,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: you just hang out. When he slid in at the
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: two mile mark, it had been every i mean every
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: bit more than an hour since we've seen that dog. Yeah,
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: he would blood trailer, and we had moved a long
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: way not blood cent trailia. And we eventually let him
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: hang out and he hangs out his all day, nicest
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: dog in the world. We're patting him hanging out. I'm trying.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: I'm trying to like think about looking up how to
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: bring a dog home. Cow's like just bringing home and
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: act like you had it coming in. I'm explaining that
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I'm just not in a position anymore to like lie
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: to authorities. Um. So, then we're on a ridge that
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: night and he see that some bit catch like his
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: nose goes up in the air and catches wind of
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: a deer, and holy shit, man, that dude knew what
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: he was doing. It wasn't like he saw it. He
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: caught wind and ran up and down the ridge a
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: couple of times to narrow down the location, plunges off
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: the ridge haul and ass. Pretty soon he's barking. I'm
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: trying to figure out what's going on, even you. I
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: see a dough squirting out across the valley flooring up
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the other side, and that dog still on him. And
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: we thought, prove deer runner man, just yellow dog or
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: the black black one. And then he came back just
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: like we did it. He's like, I told you, I
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: told you I was great. No one wanted to believe me.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Good good hat. You guys didn't think I handed in
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: me and Steve and I felt like, um, we we
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: felt shamed. We felt like we've been we've been ahead
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: by the dog. You guys were suckers, man, because then
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: the rest of the week you're feeding them. I don't know.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Did we feed the dog. Yes, we packed col and
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: I packed out the Yeah, them deer legs, but never
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: in the field. Never got fed in the field. I
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: was laughing because, uh, those those two dogs, his yellow sister.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: They followed our truck the morning before, like all the
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: way to the north and Joanna trying to outdrive him,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: which you can't do you can't outrun them. Yeah, and
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: set up my spotting scope on the side of the
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: road and sit down and uh, I have just like
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: two puppies on top of me. And part of me's like,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: this isn't productive, and then the other part of me's like,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: but it's pretty awesome. Way that dog act a little
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: bit well. I remember one time I came home and
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: I had Tracy from work. She's overd and we're trying
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: to film something. My kid climbs out out of the car.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: He's with his nanny and all the kids, and they
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: climbed out of the car and he's got a McDonald's
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: cup and the first thing out of his mouth is,
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: you're gonna be disappointed in us. That's that dog. Every
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: time that dog and show up, he's like, I know
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: you're gonna beat me. I just know you're gonna beat me.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: But I can't help it. Just let's get it over with.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: And tried to persuade Steve into taking the dog because
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: I said, think about it, you can tell your kids
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: that they have to learn Spanish because the dogs from Mexico.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: It's the only thing he understands. They would learn in
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: a hurry then, Uh, Anthony, that was your first successful coup.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: Give me you know, I've give me some impressions. Um,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: I mean they're they're beautiful, dear man. You get up
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: you know they're white tails, but they're a little different
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: and by name only, yeah, by name only, right, But
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: when you get up there and you really get close
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: to one, and you know, holding your hands and look
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: at that fur that for so different there. You know,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: everybody calls him a gray ghost, right, but then you
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: run your hand over that fur and see all the
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: white in there and see the size. Um, it's just
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: real cool to haunt a white tail that is so
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: different but still a white tail. Oh what made him
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: more familiar? Kevin saw one full on I've never seen this.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: He saw one work a scrape. Yeah yeah, actually in
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: a scrape. We think it's I think it literally might
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: be the same tree we saw one work of scrape
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: last year. But um, you know he came in, worked
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: a scrape, pete in it, kick the crap out of
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: the bush next to it, scraped it some more, beat
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: up another bush, and then just like cruised on out
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: of our life and branch. He did everything in about
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: a minute. That you ever see a deer do in
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: the rut and then over the back of the ridge
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: never to be seen again. Um, yes, that was the
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: first one. Yeah, Um, yeah, it was. It was fun.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: And you know, what's what I think is really fun
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: about the hunt. We've talked about the terrain and um,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: how beautiful and different it is, but it's it's a
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: really cool mix of it's really challenging to find them
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: and to stop close enough, but it's, um, you end up,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: you work at it, you see enough, and you have
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: your chances. So it's like you kind of you always
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: feel like you're in the game or that any minute
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: could happened. Cal and I were hunting and we hadn't
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: spotted a deer in a couple of hours and got
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: to that point of the day We're sitting in the
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: sun where um, it's like a nap sounds pretty good.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: So I laid out and put my hat down, had
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: a nap for fifteen minutes, talking about what we're gonna do,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: and then it all happened real quick. You know, we
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: see a doe run and a smaller buck chasing his
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: buck came in. You kind of always have that feeling
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: that it could happen at any moment. That's that's a
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: good that's a good point, I thought. And trying to
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: explain why I've come to like it so much is
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: it's a really nice blend in this area. It's a
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: great mix of effort and reward. Where we hunted in
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: Texas not long ago on a on a big private
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: unhunted ranch, they had a lot of nil guy and
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: the mix was unusual. Yeah, you remember, like, uh, the
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: UNI bomber. Do you read the UNI Bomber's manifesto? I have.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: Actually his problem was what he didn't like his um
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: he had all human activity broken down in these like
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: classifications of effort, and he said, like staying alive used
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: to be like that took level five effort to stay alive.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Like level five effort was try as hard as you
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: can and you had a chance, right, And that's what
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: he that's when he thought human that that's what we
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: thrive under. We thrive under is tried as hard as
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: you can for a chance. But technology had gotten into
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: where survivals level one, where um, you don't try at
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: all and you're guaranteed to survive. So his gripe with
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: technology was that then that gave us all of our
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: neurotic behaviors in our unhappiness. So what you want to
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: do is use technology to wage war on technology and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: then discard the implements of war as you could until
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: it was a battle of sticks and stones, and that
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: he would un obamus back to uh un Obamas. Back
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: to level five survival. Try as hard as you can
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: and you might survive. Um down, we're hunting Texas is
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: like try kind of not at all, you'll be successful.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: And then there's whatever. It's like hunting doll sheep in
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: the fog, which is level six. Try as hard as
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: you it's still not gonna work, um, but it's a
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: really nice like try hard and you're gonna be rewarded
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: just enough to really hold your interest. It's like it's
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: like it's like a it's like a it's sort of
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: like this vending machine almost, you know. It's like there's
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: sort of like this like a known transaction. I'm gonna
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: put five bucks where the effort in and I'm gonna
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: get a five dollar product, right, but it's not a
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: dollar worth effort. It's five bucks worth the effort. Every
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: day it feels like that. It's like We're gonna work, work, work,
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: and then it just could happen. It was a really
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: great blend main goals going down there. I was just
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: I just it's been a long time since I've got
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: a good nap on the mountain in the sun, and
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: I was so looking forward to that and the neuroses
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: of spotting that deer I got. I think I got
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: one ten minutes snooze in and in five days and
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: has with you. And I had made the the mistake
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: arresting my head against some branch on the tree. I
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: had leaned up against him. Eventually the brand broke and
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: snaped me back into consciousness, and I turned and glassed
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the hillside and my eyes were kind of coming into
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: focus on this. Uh CU's dear tough walked right into
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: the into the into the fuzzy black circle at that point,
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: and um, but it was, yeah, I'm captivated by those things.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: So I was like I couldn't. I just couldn't comfortably
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: sleep because I was like, yeah, yeah, because well where
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: skill meets opportunity, Yeah, they're rare enough that everyone you
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: spot has a little element of like holy shitness has
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: a little element like you're pleased with yourself. Everybody's like, ha,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: damn it, I still got it to the to the
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: point that where when somebody else spots a deer, eventually,
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: if there's five guys on that hillside, eventually all five
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: are gonna be like, um, can you walk me into
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: that can show me where there's not so many that
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: no one airs like every deer. Everyone like you'll be like, okay,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: that's cool, he says it. I'll keep looking. But they're
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: coming and they're like, yeah, you know you know that,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: dear you mentioned, Yeah, where exactly? For me, it's like
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: almost like okay, recalibrate, look at a live one, look
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: at one that is there for sure, and then get
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: a good dose of that a little bit of extra dopamine.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: Then keep looking again. Oh go ahead. What's really telling
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: about this is when you're sitting back with you know,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: three of us glassing and someone spots a dough, all
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: three people ask get walked into the dough. If you're
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: looking at white tails in the Midwest and someone sees
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: a dough, everyone's oh, whatever, right, someone spots a dough
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: and everyone people are like getting spotting scopes out and
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: everyone wants to get on the dough. Yeah, it's like
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: it's the rut, right, So, I mean it's like, you know,
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: oftentimes that's what you find one and you just gotta
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: stairs stairs, stairs, stairs, stairs, stairs, stair and eventually get
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: like she's by herself. But sometimes you expect and like
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: macho grande. I had some one other observation about UM. Oh.
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: I think I think we debated a long time ago,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: probably last time we were all high on COO's Deer, Uh,
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: was the value of a unit of measurement in describing
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: things to people. I've come to believe that establishing a
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: unit of measurement in proximity to the thing you're trying
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: to describe is valuable. You find a tree and we're
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: like that the width of that tree is our unit
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: of measurement. Go seven units to seven o'clock. Yeah, I'm
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: a I've become a firm believer despite what jaysach what's
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: that called the guys that call air uh, Yeah, there
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: seems to be some discussion among pilots in JASACH like
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: guys that call strikes. I think there's some disagreement in
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: that community about UM. We had a JSACH operator be
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: like talk about is a method of establishing a unit
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: of measurement. And uh A pilot said, nothing sucks the
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: energy out of a cockpit more than a jsach operators
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: suggesting a unit of measurement. But I'm a believer in
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: the cous deer woods. I'm a believer in the unit
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: of measurement. Well, we had a conversation. You were like
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: thirty yards to my right and we're trying to talk
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: about where that deer's betted. I'm like, okay, now this
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: oak has a white trunk. It's this one's not snapped
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: off the base. This one snapped off like ten twelve
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: ft from the base. Ten twelve ft up the trunk
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: gets snapped off and I and I hear Steve go, well,
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: I don't agree with the hype, but I know what
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: trigger Okay, An, you know what I don't mean. I
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: don't mean to tell you what to do, but you
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: do talk about Jay a little bit. Jay is an
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: interesting dude. Feel like he's an anomaly as a guide,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: do you m M anomally? I just think he's like
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: he's just like so like just very organized and even
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: keeled and predictable. His actual business acumen, I find is
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: a two type of guide quality he's in the two percent.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: But business not like business like like Eberneese or Scrooge
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: kind of business, but just like a customer care and
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: that even sounds we don't how to describe it. You
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: just feel like like very You just feel like you're
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: very good hands. Yea, yeah, he's dialed. Yeah, I don't
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: know if it's o c D. But like, no, you
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: think there's elements of that. Well, but the same way
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: that you have it for keeping your garage organized, you
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: know that's o c D. He just applies that to
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: getting his forms all tight. He's like delivering. I feel
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: that he I feel that Jay Scott really um ah um.
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Besides what it might mean for like his business ever,
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: really he has a per He feels a deep sense
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: of personal obligation that when people that are interacting with
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: him in that relationship, I feel that there's like something
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: beyond money or whatever, like like a personal sense that
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: like he owes that person a level of care and service.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: Over a bunch of years of interacting with him, I
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: think he's just doing a good job. Yeah, but over
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: a lot of years of dealing with guides and outfitters,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: I'll tell you there's only one person I've ever shown
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: up to and had them hand me a Manila envelope
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: with my name on it, with every all the paperwork
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: and and duplicates or triplicates, and sample forms and sample
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: forms on how you feel things out. Yeah, he's got
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: a real passion for those deer, especially for big, big
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: versions of the buckey kind. Um. I mean, that's why
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: he does it. And he likes to spread the joy.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: He's not holding back, He's not holding the pickle recipe.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: Matt Dross. You know, I want to say that the
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: drills um for a long time, it was it was
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: it was his family's pickle recipe, and and and and
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: and it was shared. It was shared, it was eventually shared.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: Do you have it? You read it out on the
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: Mediator podcast. I'm gonna give you the pickle Recie. I'm
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: talking about Kevin Boddy. You know, you know your overview.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: You know, this is round two for me. Last year
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: was the first time I got a chance to go
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: chase these things. And um, I remember last year when
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: we were we were packing up to leave. Um, you know,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: we talked about coming back, and I didn't hesitate to
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: say sign me up, right, I want to do it again.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: It's it's a really special hunt there. They're a great critter,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: It's in an awesome spot. Um, it's beautiful down there
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: right going in the up in the mountains, in the desert,
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: that time of air is fantastic. Um, so all of
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: it is like it's a great experience all around. You know,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: people talk about a one and done hunt. No, this
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: is not no like muskats and then goes like Musko.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: I'm sure some people do, but it's like you go on,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: so you know, yeah, I could do this every year,
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: but it's not like it's not it's the thing. It's
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: for me. It feels like turkeys. As soon as it ends,
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, next, next, next years. Yeah it is.
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: It feels a bit like you know, to me, it's
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: it's a different critter, but the hunts really similar. It's
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: it's kind of like hunting not ad like in the
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: West Texas Mountains. Reminds me a lot of that. The
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: hunts really similar. Um. It's a team sport too. I
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: think that's another really cool part of that. Um, you know,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: almost sharing a lot of relevant information and yeah, um,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: which is kind of fun, right. You know, the traditional
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: white tail hunting, especially if you're an archery guy. That's
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: a that's an individual sport, right, You're not hanging out.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: It's not social sport at all. This is this was
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: really fun. You know, I love I love this hunt.
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: And hell, how this hunt goes down with a great
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: it really is. It's kind of that's a good point
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: about it. It's not like a loner thing. I'm sure
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: there's probably some guy that does it that way, but
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: it really invites because there's a lot of space to
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: go around, there's a lot of information to get shared.
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: Hunting together is very effective. Um, there's so much ground
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: that like two guys can sit next to each other
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: and you're not overlapping. Yeah, you guys are probably gonna
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: see twice as many deer as one guy would. Yeah,
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: it's great to have another set of eyes, you know,
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: I mean a week of five hours a day behind
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: the glass by yourself be you know, when your eyeballs
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: had fall out into your head would get probably pretty
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: scrambled at that point. Right. So that's another part of
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: this I thought was you know that I love about
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: this hunt. This is absolutely kind of a team sport hunt. Yeah,
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: I don't know any more capacity. I don't know the
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: full capacity of how many uh um, how much more?
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: You know, how many more people could go? I said,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: you have, like, I don't know, Well, it depends on
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: how many tags you have at the ranch. Certainly if
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: everybody wants to have the opportunity to kill one. But
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: it wouldn't matter to me really just to go down
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: and hang out I would have I'd be like, oh cool,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: I have to deal with forms, just have to get
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: a Tourists had a recap call with Jay this morning.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: He just called to see, you know how it went
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: for us, and uh we guy just talking about just
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: how important it is to It speaks of the team
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: effort and how you cannot like once you find one
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: and if there's even sort of this idea that you
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: that might be the one that you're gonna then continue
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: to pursue and try to kill it cannot leave someone's
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: eyeballs at all times. Once you've made that decision. You
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: have to have a hunting partner that when you say
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: are you on that deer, They're like yes. And that
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: means I will not pee, I will not snack, I
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: will not look to the top of the ridge. I
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: will when he goes behind the bush for twenty minutes,
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: I'm not gonna go start to look around for other deer.
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: I will look at that bush until that deer walks
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: back out. It takes that level if you want to
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: be constantly successful at you know, at killing box and
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: especially mature box. Do you remember when we put dirt
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: years ago? Remember we putting dirt, myuth on washing the deer,
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: big old but hillside one juniper on it, or like
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: dirt is a deer behind that juniper. Don't take your
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: eyes off and hours go by, when we come back,
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: it's still there there. There's no way it's still there.
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: And he let it slip. He scratched it. Couldn't scratched
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: his eye. Man, we never went over there to check,
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: uh Phil. So let's say you do your hunt safety.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: Are you scheduled? Uh No, not yet. And I'm still
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: waiting to for Ben to come back. So we're gonna
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: have a talk about what the plan is. I guess
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: you go do hunters safety. That's a good point. Has
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: been on paternity leave, yeah, I mean it's I haven't
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: gotten an update, but his child should have been born yesterday.
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: Anybody his wife is a little sick with infection, so
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: they put off the real Yeah, so they put off
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: the C section for a couple of days so that
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: she's going in every day and doing so hopefully hopefully
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: any day. Good luck to them. Uh. Once you talk
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: to Maggie and Tracy, they'll tell you how to do
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: hunter safety. Yeah, I'm doing it. So let's say you
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: did do it. You're doing it? Yes? Uh? Are you
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: sold not sold? Well? I had to talk with Calan
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: Ben about this. I have zero expectations, but I'm looking
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: forward to it. Are you sold on? Would you go
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: down to Mexico specifically for cuty? Are you not there yet?
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: I mean I don't think I'm there yet. I think
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: every everyone would probably agree, But I mean it sounds
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: like a killer experience. Sounds great, Yeah, especially for people
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: who've been doing this their whole lot. I was and
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: still still get like jazzed about something like this. Yeah. Good,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: I'll put you in touch with Jay. You'll be the
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: old You're gonna be the oldest guy in hunter safety.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, for sure. We'll be there with a bunch
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: of twelve year old No, they'll score better. That's fine,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: that's fine. Hold, are your kids six and one. Also
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: they're not doing it yet, No, not not quite. Yeah. Um,
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: any any final thoughts and well if you are interested
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: Colburn and scott Outfitters dot Com right, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: you know we keep talking about JA but um, I
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: don't want to be like the unsung here. But you
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: know Dark his partner, Dark Colburn, who I love just
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: as much. Yeah, he can glass him up there every
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: bit as good as Jay can. Yeah. We didn't see
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: him this trip, so he wasn't top of mind. No, no,
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: I don't even know if he got it. I think
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: he just he took his boys down for the first
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: time to Mexico right after the holiday. That's nothing I
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: like about Dars. He's uh, very devoted um training his
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: kids up and hunting. Well, I think that's the training
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: is over, man, He's living. He's living the fruits of
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: his labor right now. I mean, I think he's really
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: like he planned that and like, you know, not everybody's
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: kids grow up to be hardcore hunters, but like he's
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: sort of you know, guided his kids to that and
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: now they're like, that's what we want to do and
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: we want to do it with you, dad. And you know,
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: I think guy as a father. He's just like, yeah,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: nothing beats this, like I did it. He didn't name
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: him hunter either, did he No, but one has the
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: middle name of Coups. Oh, we can't leave the counter
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: the final thing. We got to leave the conversation. But
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: I know that some number of people are like, no,
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: there's no there's one guy, just one guy. Screw him.
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: You know what I'm gonna talk about. I think cows. Cows. Yeah,
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: it's not worth it. I've talked to the guys. Yeah,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: it's not worth it. And I like to plant for
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: those of you you are like, it's not what are
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: you supposed to say? It's cows. I've talked to the
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: individuals who I know I know this like empirically, who
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: have said the word and written the word more than
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: anyone else in the world, and they say, KU's deer.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: And one of them told me, and I will say
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: it until I die, it's not cows. Whatever. Call what
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: you want, just don't don't write us about it. Is that.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: You know what we're talking about. It's like, oh, sorry,
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: what do you a little gray deer that hid? Real?
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: Will that one? Yeah? Okay? They used to call it
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: the Arizona. Dear, didn't they at one point? No? But
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: Elliott cows cows Elliott cows. Uh. He has some strange
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: beliefs he bleed in, like levitation and all kinds of stuff.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: Interesting dude read up on him sometime that I want
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: to talk about that. So people who have to write
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: the email about that, Um, the severed finger at all,
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: the tendon. I can't decide if I'm gonna put it
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: on Instagram or not. Probably not, so I don't probably
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: look for that. Uh, probably have to say. Um just
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: mentioned a big thank you for everybody who's already purchased
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: tickets for the meat Eater off the tour. Damn it cow. Yeah,
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: that's that's a good one. I've been getting a lot
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: of emails on that. You know, I used to how
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I used to to be. I used to not like ads,
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: you know, when they run an ad like you don't
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: run ads for free on TV, right, And he'd run
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: an ad being like hurry up and buy now. They're
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: going fast, And I think, well, if they were going fast,
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: why would you wouldn't still run that because you'd be
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: like those are when they went there the limited supply
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: Like sure, But I don't buy it because if it
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: was limited, if they're all out, you wouldn't pure marketing.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: So I don't. So I'm in his trap, trap because
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: tickets are going fast. Yeah, you know what, I'm not lying.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Take's going fast. Portland's sold out in four hours. All
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: the v I P tickets are gone. I would guess,
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: because we're talking about Sonora and that borders Arizona, I
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: would guess when it's hits, you might get You can
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: probably get Arizona tickets mesa Phoenix market. I haven't checked.
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: I was just saying, thank you very much. Well, you're
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: not selling tours off to a great start, and uh,
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: we probably need to. It's not really an apology. We
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: can't be at every city everywhere, but you know, hopefully
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: eventually we'll come see you. And don't take it personally
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: that we don't have a venue booked in your hometown
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: right now. What happened and I had a feverish dream
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: where I conceptualize this thing called dollar Dance with cal
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: for twenty bucks for conservation. So if you do have
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: a live ticket to come to meet your live off
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: the air, bring twenty bucks because you might need it
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: if you want to dance with Cal in a little spotlight,
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: and we're gonna be marching, Dick. Cal is gonna think
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: about getting some better shoes. Cal, let's say you had
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: to dance with a couple hundred people. Yeah, man, the
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: logistics of this, Uh, you want me to cancel it?
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: How would you cancel selling with a name like dollar
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: dance with Cal for twenty bucks for conservation? I mean
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: that's like the stuff. That's a great name. Yeah, And
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: I'm a sucker for things that go to conservation. So
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: we can't cancel it. We just gotta figure out a
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: way to make it. Maybe a little kisses like kisses,
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: it's gonna be male, does matter me? Kiss Cal for
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: twenty bucks for conservation, Just a big old kissing life. Anyway,
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: it's your chance. I'm gonna be there a chap rowing
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: and I want anyone goosing him. I don't want anyone
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: gooseing them or grabbing him in any kind of untoward fashion. Uh. Detroit.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: When I when I say these a lot of times,
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: like the it's like the market, So like the Detroit,
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Phoenix, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston, d C,
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: d C, Minneapolis, did I say that. Yeah, we're going
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: back to many. Yeah, Portland, the sorry Frederick Maryland is
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: at the DC show. That's right, in the parlance of
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: tour agents as the DC market, but it's not in
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: d C. And uh yeah, a lot of love on
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: the last time this tour. It's a lot of love
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: the people who live in in in uh areas where
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: their lifestyle doesn't get a lot of support, right, Oh,
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: like they're not out, It's all I say. It's like, yeah,
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: I mean, like, you know, gazillions of people who like
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: hunting fish, right, but I kind of like that do
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: in l A, San Francisco? Portland's Oh yeah, it's funny
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: because it is places for tickets go fastest, which is
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: the weirdest thing because it's like, oh thank god. Remember
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: in Spinal Tap that it was like civilization. Um, did
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: you get that reference film? You're too old for that?
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: Too young? Absolutely not? Now you didn't get absolutely not.
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: I'm not too young for that was one of my
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: favorite movies. Turn it up to eleven. Never laughed harder
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: in my life than when they bring the Little Stonehenge
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: monument down its tiny crank. Do you mentioned the l
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: A Market? Oh, yeah, we're talking about l A. Alright, good, good,
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: just checking make sure Chicago. Oh didn't mention Chicago is
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: Anaheim l A or what do we call l A
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: anaheim z l A. I tried to reach out to
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: the cash you're killer, see if he can come out,
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: but I haven't gotten hurt. I haven't I got a
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: prompt him. Oh, Brian callin. Come on. Al right, guys,
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: thank you very much for joining. Don't go cuz here hunting. Uh.
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: I don't want to ruin a good thing. But the
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: live shows. Tell j By no tickets are going fast.
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: Tell j you won't pay more bucks. Jay is gonna
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: be at the Mesa. Oh yeah, we're gonna have Jay
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: on stage in Mesa. Yeah, give you some real I'm
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: gonna have Jay come out, and Jay's gonna give us
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: his top five Arizona hunting tips. You can do fishing
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: tips to He fishes a lot because he fishes Colorado.
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: How about top five Arizona hunting tips and top two
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: Colorado fishing chips, and you's gonna learn how to do
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: a drum roll. I think we should let him do
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: top ten. He's got a lot in that coveasive his Spanish.
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: It was a good Spanish. You know. Vaka means I
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: do banyo, but I think it's probaca casa. I'm still
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: getting it. Yeah, Binato got it, carn a banato, Emberra solamente,
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: what's ember? Remember that one. It's more Spanish than he
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: spoke all week. No, I don't know that one. Man.
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: It's oh damn it, dope. Yeah. I always laughed because
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: one of your favorite stories is cabasa debacca. Yeah, I
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: know all those words. All right, go do something else.
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: Thanks guys,
