- 1:54Speaker 2: a fun episode. Let's see what we can get through
- 1:56Speaker 2: this one.
- 1:57Speaker 3: We already had an episode before the episode.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, check the octaves on this joint. Yeah. So we
- 2:03Speaker 2: got to cast the characters here today, man.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Friends of the show, to say the least, to say
- 2:09Speaker 3: the least. So we got Ray Daniels out of Atlanta.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Let's go by way of New York. Originally he had
- 2:15Speaker 3: to say nice from the York.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Raised from New York. He is a cultural referee. But
- 2:21Speaker 1: we're not letting him just claim this Atlanta thing. He's
- 2:23Speaker 1: going too far, too far.
- 2:25Speaker 3: But but but Ray, if you don't know his backstory,
- 2:27Speaker 3: Ray was actually in the music business for a long
- 2:29Speaker 3: time executive and then during the pandemic actually started to
- 2:33Speaker 3: produce content. So a lot of people know you as
- 2:35Speaker 3: a content producer, a content creator, but they might not
- 2:39Speaker 3: know that you actually was a music executive.
- 2:41Speaker 4: We still still have the number one song in the
- 2:43Speaker 4: globe right now. The song is that apt the Rosie.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I always tell dues like what and then I play
- 2:50Speaker 4: for them like my kids played it all day. No
- 2:53Speaker 4: one's song in the globe, so still in it. But
- 2:55Speaker 4: on the globe, on the globe, it's not you know,
- 2:58Speaker 4: like a undred global on that chart, not the Billboard
- 3:01Speaker 4: Hot one hundred in the world.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So like in the world, it's.
- 3:05Speaker 5: The biggest K pop song of all time.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Oh wow, damn seriously, And we.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Got the biggest K pop song of all time, and
- 3:11Speaker 4: we got the biggest male K pop songs, we got
- 3:13Speaker 4: the biggest female at male. So still an exact I
- 3:17Speaker 4: get busy, but I like what you guys do.
- 3:18Speaker 5: That's why I'm here.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Thank you for to do this. Oh b old Melea
- 3:29Speaker 2: what's up? What's up?
- 3:30Speaker 6: By way, the d M V yep also born in Atlanta.
- 3:33Speaker 6: So Grady baby, come.
- 3:36Speaker 2: On, he say he was a ye.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I thought it was like a whole Niger boy thing.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Going shout out to legos So, co founder The Cut,
- 3:49Speaker 1: co found of The Cut. Yeah, that's a barber scheduling app,
- 3:52Speaker 1: the number one app to find a barber anywhere around
- 3:54Speaker 1: the country. We have about eight million users. If you
- 3:57Speaker 1: need a barber here in d C or here d
- 3:59Speaker 1: C anywhere, we got.
- 4:01Speaker 2: You, legendary bro change the game. Can't front and change again.
- 4:04Speaker 6: This summer we're gonna hit one hundred million appointments book,
- 4:06Speaker 6: which is crazy hand appreciated tratulation.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Oh you class for that, the studio, the studio audience.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And then the last one needs no introduction in math.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Halfa legend in the game Start.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Start. It's like we already started shout out the judging.
- 4:31Speaker 2: This whole.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Off the top freestyle com e legend in two games
- 4:40Speaker 3: when we.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Very crazy he is they're talking about battle rap.
- 4:45Speaker 2: One of the pioneers of the battle rap coach.
- 4:47Speaker 3: We talked about smacking and that whole era that was
- 4:51Speaker 3: like in the two thousands that you know, he's definitely
- 4:53Speaker 3: a major figure in that, and then from the podcast
- 4:56Speaker 3: space content creation obviously, you know people I'm sure have
- 5:01Speaker 3: seen clips and interviews and everything that he's been doing
- 5:03Speaker 3: over the last couple of years with that. So all right, gentlemen,
- 5:06Speaker 3: thank you. We ain't say what Math from though, oh
- 5:08Speaker 3: Brooklyn from We're from. We were born in the Bronx,
- 5:15Speaker 3: raised in Greenberg, New York, so we Worchester Coya came
- 5:18Speaker 3: from a two pairhousehold. That's all I need to know.
- 5:21Speaker 2: We got a lot to talk about.
- 5:22Speaker 3: So first of all, how did you three come together
- 5:26Speaker 3: and talk about why you came together?
- 5:29Speaker 2: I mean, we.
- 5:30Speaker 6: All here because we love rap at the cup, we
- 5:33Speaker 6: were trying to figure out we want to do something
- 5:34Speaker 6: cool this year and so my man Eddida Mogul, he's
- 5:38Speaker 6: always introduced and talked about that we should work with
- 5:41Speaker 6: Ray on something, just something in the music space. And
- 5:43Speaker 6: like when you think about barbershops and music culture, I
- 5:46Speaker 6: mean they go hand to hand, have been for decades.
- 5:48Speaker 6: And so I hit Ray, we talked about putting on
- 5:51Speaker 6: the competition. They hit Math. We got together and we
- 5:54Speaker 6: started talking about let's put on a three city tour.
- 5:57Speaker 6: We started in New York, then we'll go to the DMV,
- 5:59Speaker 6: then we'll go to Atlanta. Allowed MCUs to come and
- 6:01Speaker 6: spit their most fire freestyles. All you got to do
- 6:04Speaker 6: is shout out one of us or to cut on,
- 6:07Speaker 6: you know, in your freestyle, in your verse and the end,
- 6:09Speaker 6: we don't allow people to vote and choose and were
- 6:12Speaker 6: gonna crown a champl So it was done for promo
- 6:14Speaker 6: for the cut that to build brand awareness.
- 6:18Speaker 5: I was gonna say awareness.
- 6:19Speaker 4: It was the fact that you know, and you wouldn't
- 6:21Speaker 4: believe how many places we went where somebody was like
- 6:24Speaker 4: this app, Oh did you own this? It's a black
- 6:27Speaker 4: owned eod. Yeah, that's mean, It's like I just used
- 6:29Speaker 4: it this morning. So it was more like just shining
- 6:31Speaker 4: the light on what you know. Usually they say black
- 6:33Speaker 4: owned company support. You know, the company is already successful
- 6:36Speaker 4: and it's black owned, so that's why.
- 6:37Speaker 6: You And it was done in barbershops. Yeah, we picked
- 6:40Speaker 6: the barbershop in every city.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Yep, and we set up and we let the people
- 6:43Speaker 5: go at it.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So, so talk about each one of your roles.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Obviously you got the infrastructure inside of a barbershop, You've
- 6:49Speaker 1: got the background in the music industry.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And then mathlick and I knew, I knew I need
- 6:53Speaker 2: we need MBC.
- 6:55Speaker 7: You got system you got and I wanted to spot
- 6:57Speaker 7: talent you got after an expert opinion.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Absolutely rap especially so to.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Talk about how this dynamic is working in terms of
- 7:07Speaker 1: the show.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Well, as I said, we was all we was laughing
- 7:10Speaker 4: off camera because it's just funny.
- 7:12Speaker 5: It's like, because rap is a subjective thing.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Like when we spoke about it, it's like we can
- 7:16Speaker 4: all we can objectively say who's greater, who's not, But
- 7:18Speaker 4: it's really about kind of like what you're looking for.
- 7:20Speaker 4: So Math was like the bars mattered to him, and
- 7:24Speaker 4: to me, the story mattered, Like to me, I wanted
- 7:26Speaker 4: to feel like I knew you. I want to feel
- 7:28Speaker 4: like I wanted to want to give you the check,
- 7:30Speaker 4: like damn, they was, you're going through that much here,
- 7:32Speaker 4: And you know Math was looking for like the bars, the.
- 7:36Speaker 7: Not just the bars, just the bars. A couple of
- 7:39Speaker 7: times that I told people like make us feel something. Yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, like but.
- 7:43Speaker 2: You but what I mean by that is like it's
- 7:45Speaker 2: like another language to me, That's what That's what I mean.
- 7:47Speaker 2: It's like another language to me.
- 7:49Speaker 4: It's like what you got to sit me down and
- 7:51Speaker 4: take out a board talk board right every work because
- 7:54Speaker 4: for me, it's just complicated. So I look for like,
- 7:56Speaker 4: how can I follow you? And OBI just wanted you to,
- 7:58Speaker 4: you know, say something dope.
- 8:00Speaker 6: No, I mean that's that d Like I just wanted
- 8:02Speaker 6: creativity in my verse, Like I wanted to hear because
- 8:04Speaker 6: part of it was that you had to use to
- 8:06Speaker 6: cut in a creative way. So I wanted to hear
- 8:08Speaker 6: either creativity in that or just like how you talked
- 8:11Speaker 6: about barbershops or barberan culture in the verse. So yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 6: I think that's why all three of us had different opinions.
- 8:15Speaker 6: That's judges in.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I mean, I feel like we got some really good
- 8:18Speaker 4: it was fun man, And how much does the winner get?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Ten bands? Ten thousand dollars? And they got it. They
- 8:23Speaker 2: got to promoted on their social.
- 8:24Speaker 6: Yup currently right now our championship contestants are actively promoting it.
- 8:29Speaker 6: So we got our winner from DC, we got a
- 8:31Speaker 6: winner from New York and Atlanta and you know made
- 8:34Speaker 6: the best.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And by the way, the best part about it is
- 8:36Speaker 4: two or three winners are women.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Mm hm. Women came through.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And this was this you guys funder of this sure,
- 8:43Speaker 3: and is this something that you think and eventually like
- 8:46Speaker 3: you can take and have sponsors behind.
- 8:48Speaker 6: The absolute I mean we've already been talking to certain
- 8:50Speaker 6: brands who want to get involved. Like we started here
- 8:52Speaker 6: on the East Coast, and I think next we can
- 8:53Speaker 6: go down to Texas to the midwest West coast Cally.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 6: I mean there's so many opportunities to like really give
- 8:59Speaker 6: rappers and opportunity to showcase their skill, and like for us,
- 9:02Speaker 6: it's like, how do we empower this industry, just like
- 9:05Speaker 6: we do for barbers, like give an opportunity to really
- 9:07Speaker 6: like you know, show this stuff.
- 9:08Speaker 1: How many contestants applied to be a part of this
- 9:10Speaker 1: or submitted that their freestyle and you know when with.
- 9:14Speaker 6: Each probably had like to like four hundred five hundred people, Yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 6: trying to participate.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And as you're listening to it, right.
- 9:24Speaker 1: As you're listening to it, you want to be contan
- 9:28Speaker 1: and you want to be encouraging, but you know, some
- 9:31Speaker 1: people just really ain't.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Got it for sure, you know, like how did y'all
- 9:34Speaker 2: go about that?
- 9:35Speaker 1: I want math, I want to start with you because
- 9:37Speaker 1: this is this is your battleground right here. When you
- 9:39Speaker 1: had somebody that really ain't doing this, how are you
- 9:43Speaker 1: giving that feedback?
- 9:44Speaker 2: I mean there's a couple of people I just look
- 9:47Speaker 2: at them and be like, you feel like you did
- 9:51Speaker 2: that was you're a part of it, like you did
- 9:53Speaker 2: like you know, and a lot of them was on it.
- 9:56Speaker 7: They'd be like, nah, you know, I'm.
- 9:59Speaker 6: He was like like if you had the freestyle, like
- 10:01Speaker 6: if you really came with something like written like what
- 10:04Speaker 6: that sounds like?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, some people were.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Some people were so bad that we were like, nah,
- 10:08Speaker 4: give us because you know, when you hear off the top,
- 10:10Speaker 4: you naturally think freestyle. It's really just off the top
- 10:14Speaker 4: of your head. They could be written whatever. So but
- 10:16Speaker 4: it was like nobody freestyles though, Let's just be honest
- 10:18Speaker 4: about no.
- 10:18Speaker 2: No, no.
- 10:19Speaker 7: There was a people, a lot of people who walked
- 10:22Speaker 7: in and freestyle, and there were some people who did
- 10:24Speaker 7: it and they were excellent at it.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Ye slug slug like slugo killed it crazy. But cash
- 10:29Speaker 4: Flow walked in and he just like.
- 10:31Speaker 3: So it is that is? That is it supposed to
- 10:33Speaker 3: be designed for? Because the term freestyle, Let's let's have
- 10:38Speaker 3: this conversation.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I love.
- 10:41Speaker 3: When the term freestyle started in hip hop it was
- 10:43Speaker 3: freestyle right of like, Yo, Troy got orange jacket, Da
- 10:48Speaker 3: da da, I can't like whatever I'm seeing.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I'm just rapping.
- 10:52Speaker 3: That morphed into having written rhymes prepared and spitting a
- 10:57Speaker 3: verse that you've already practiced.
- 10:59Speaker 7: Mixtape and yet okay, when you picked up a mixtape,
- 11:03Speaker 7: clue and yeah clue. Uh, the locks freestyle, you you know,
- 11:08Speaker 7: they not free styling.
- 11:10Speaker 2: They're just going over somebody else's beat.
- 11:12Speaker 7: So they would call it a freestyle right right, And
- 11:14Speaker 7: that's when that that freestyle term started to get fuzzy.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Was a new beat original.
- 11:22Speaker 2: It was just rapping over not your song.
- 11:25Speaker 1: That It's like different when I heard KRS freestyle, yes,
- 11:28Speaker 1: I know, like there's no way he wrote that.
- 11:30Speaker 2: That just happened just now. Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 3: So okay, So for your guys competition, are you valuing
- 11:37Speaker 3: the original format of freestyle on the top of your
- 11:39Speaker 3: head or is it freestyle? It's like I got a
- 11:42Speaker 3: verse and I'm just rapping from me looking at it,
- 11:44Speaker 3: That's what I was looking at like and to your
- 11:46Speaker 3: up to the mass point, there were some who come
- 11:48Speaker 3: in there and they would just call on things that
- 11:49Speaker 3: we had on in the that we had on in
- 11:52Speaker 3: the fit or things that are going in the shop.
- 11:53Speaker 6: And so that was the creativity that gave me extra points.
- 11:56Speaker 6: And obviously some people came in with like fully written,
- 11:58Speaker 6: but those who really like you could tell we're freeze
- 12:00Speaker 6: down off the top, they definitely got bonus points.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Yeah, And for me, it was about preparation, like anybody
- 12:06Speaker 4: can rap, but like when the lights is on and
- 12:09Speaker 4: it's like camera is go and you gotta be perfect
- 12:12Speaker 4: for ninety seconds.
- 12:13Speaker 2: To me, that's what I was judging off, like who
- 12:15Speaker 2: came prepared?
- 12:16Speaker 4: Like who could just do it in one you know,
- 12:17Speaker 4: like people speak one take Jay, Like that's almost like
- 12:20Speaker 4: a compliment, Like, man, he did that in one verse,
- 12:23Speaker 4: one take.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I was dunk do the first dunk.
- 12:26Speaker 4: So for me, I was looking for preparation and just who,
- 12:29Speaker 4: like I said, I want to know you, Like when
- 12:31Speaker 4: when we came up with this, I was like, man,
- 12:32Speaker 4: like things are times hard. It would be dope to
- 12:35Speaker 4: just give somebody ten thousand dollars because it's not like
- 12:38Speaker 4: when you know, it's not like we're talking to eighteen
- 12:40Speaker 4: year old's, like you got to be sixteen. I mean
- 12:41Speaker 4: we had some fifty year olds coming there and kill it,
- 12:44Speaker 4: like just straight, like straight New York dudes that you
- 12:46Speaker 4: knew was nice back in the day that I was
- 12:47Speaker 4: looking for. And then you laughing because that's why he smiled.
- 12:50Speaker 4: He should have went up. I'm laughing because like.
- 12:54Speaker 7: I was giving points for like things I shouldn't be
- 12:56Speaker 7: giving points for, like what are the dudes whipped out
- 12:59Speaker 7: a night?
- 13:00Speaker 2: And I was like security had a PROPM and we
- 13:05Speaker 2: in the room like yo, somebody security.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It was created. Who is securious? It's all about the
- 13:12Speaker 1: point system. So your judges, like you brought up the
- 13:16Speaker 1: dunk contest. I know the dunk contest is fifty is
- 13:18Speaker 1: the best score?
- 13:19Speaker 2: How are y'all judging? What's the score? Criteria? Ten? Ten?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Ten and uh? And And the part that I didn't
- 13:25Speaker 2: like was we didn't let each other have each other score.
- 13:27Speaker 4: It wasn't like you could have your score over there
- 13:28Speaker 4: and you can have your score. It was like what's
- 13:30Speaker 4: your score? What you're giving them? They too like it
- 13:34Speaker 4: was it was involvement. It was I started looking I
- 13:37Speaker 4: was policing it. I mean like Math was policing us,
- 13:39Speaker 4: like you would have thought that he was the rap
- 13:41Speaker 4: police there, Like, yo, I'm gonna make sure that y'all
- 13:43Speaker 4: don't miss this up. It's like, bro, we just having
- 13:46Speaker 4: fun with wrap. No, no, no, it's not fun.
- 13:48Speaker 2: It's not fun.
- 13:49Speaker 5: It's a serious thing.
- 13:50Speaker 7: So because a lot of a lot of guys came
- 13:52Speaker 7: in there and they put their heart on them.
- 13:55Speaker 4: But to me, I also just on a deeper level,
- 13:57Speaker 4: I also look at like when people say they want
- 13:58Speaker 4: to do music, I'm like, it's so easy to break
- 14:00Speaker 4: into music if you don't look at it through the
- 14:02Speaker 4: eyes of making a song traditionally, like you know, like
- 14:06Speaker 4: I always I like to play with people.
- 14:07Speaker 5: I'm like, if I say called one called JG.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Wetworth, everybody can say eight seven seven cash now, like
- 14:12Speaker 4: we all heard it before, but we never played in
- 14:14Speaker 4: our car. It's not that we look for we just
- 14:16Speaker 4: so it's like repetition. So like sometimes it's about being
- 14:19Speaker 4: repetitions putting your music out there and creating your stuff
- 14:22Speaker 4: because a lot of these guys are nice, but now
- 14:23Speaker 4: they're putting their music out like Alex my sister, I'm sorry. Okay,
- 14:27Speaker 4: So my assistant raps right, and he's been with us
- 14:30Speaker 4: for six months, but I didn't know he.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I didn't realize he rapped.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Until he started until he did the contest, And now
- 14:34Speaker 4: every time I opened my I G it's a new
- 14:35Speaker 4: Alex freestyle, Like it's like, that's what's up now. He's
- 14:38Speaker 4: out there now now, So for me it's like also
- 14:40Speaker 4: like sometimes it's not nice though.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Sound.
- 14:49Speaker 4: So we got to remember I come from a different world,
- 14:51Speaker 4: so I also need to feel like I'm looking at
- 14:53Speaker 4: a rapper.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Okay, And for six months was like.
- 14:57Speaker 4: He looked like he looked like like he loo part
- 15:00Speaker 4: of the Mac because you're not like he was saying
- 15:03Speaker 4: return of the Mac brown or black leather jacket. It
- 15:11Speaker 4: looks like.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Blade, like he got Blade. You're right, I mean that
- 15:18Speaker 2: thing is that.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Like I think you're taking it around like pit Bull
- 15:24Speaker 4: looks like Scarface. It just works, bro, you got it.
- 15:26Speaker 4: He looks like Blade. I'm listening Blade. I want to
- 15:34Speaker 4: get invited back here. I'm not gonna say no Crazy.
- 15:38Speaker 4: As soon as Mad respond, I was gonna be quiet
- 15:40Speaker 4: because I.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Just that's messed up. Let's do this so I do.
- 15:44Speaker 3: I want to come back to this, but I also
- 15:46Speaker 3: want to get individual conversations going because you each have
- 15:49Speaker 3: unique jets. So let's talk with you because you're probably
- 15:52Speaker 3: the person that they might not be familiar with. Okay,
- 15:55Speaker 3: let's talk about starting this app and actually raising money
- 15:59Speaker 3: for the app and then making the app profitable. Like
- 16:01Speaker 3: that's a journey, in this journey within itself. Absolutely, I
- 16:04Speaker 3: mean I think so the I go to the beginning.
- 16:08Speaker 3: The beginning was I had moved to North Carolina start
- 16:11Speaker 3: a new job down there, and I'm sure all of
- 16:13Speaker 3: us know we go to our barbershop every week or two.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Every week or two, I was down in North Carolina
- 16:18Speaker 3: for about two months while getting a haircut, so without
- 16:20Speaker 3: without a hair because I'm a choice.
- 16:22Speaker 6: I mean, I wasn't about just like you didn't trust
- 16:27Speaker 6: and that was the issue with Like that was the
- 16:29Speaker 6: first time I realized, you know, there could be an
- 16:30Speaker 6: opportunity here. And this is back in twenty fifteen, and
- 16:32Speaker 6: so right around dinners well, I said, you know, you'd
- 16:35Speaker 6: seen Uber, You've seen lived and Handy and all these
- 16:37Speaker 6: different apps starting to be born. And that's when I said, Okay,
- 16:40Speaker 6: they might be an opportunity to something like this some barbershops.
- 16:42Speaker 6: So fast forward, like a year later, I ended up
- 16:45Speaker 6: moving back home to DC area and I'm talking to
- 16:48Speaker 6: I'm talking to one of my friends and we're trying
- 16:50Speaker 6: to figure we want to do next. I build this app,
- 16:53Speaker 6: like the little prototype I showed some friends. They get excited.
- 16:56Speaker 6: We show our barber, they get really excited, and you know,
- 16:58Speaker 6: we've been off to Raceis ever since you got to
- 17:00Speaker 6: It's a subscription, yeah, serve for the barbers. They pay
- 17:02Speaker 6: a month to fee how much the barbers twenty five
- 17:05Speaker 6: a month, twenty five of a month.
- 17:06Speaker 2: You just have to pay money.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Whenever you're booking your haircut, that's when you pay like
- 17:10Speaker 6: a like processing fee on transaction.
- 17:12Speaker 3: And it's to locate barbers. So it's all things like
- 17:15Speaker 3: if you ectual appointment. Also, like if you're traveling for work,
- 17:18Speaker 3: you can find a barber. If you have a barber,
- 17:20Speaker 3: you can use it just to book them so you
- 17:21Speaker 3: don't have to walk in the shop and spend four
- 17:23Speaker 3: hours waiting.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:24Speaker 6: You can use your card so you don't got to
- 17:25Speaker 6: like run to the ATM get cash. Like we're trying
- 17:28Speaker 6: to complete, like build a whole ecosystem for barbers and barbershops.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I have that bro It's crazy. I've been using it
- 17:34Speaker 1: for probably about five years. When you walk in, I
- 17:37Speaker 1: was like, oh shit, I have it. Yeah, you got
- 17:39Speaker 1: two hundred thousand barbers. Yeah, that's a lot, especially for
- 17:43Speaker 1: a subscription model. This is not that we count, but
- 17:45Speaker 1: it saysn't release. We got different tiers, different different I
- 17:51Speaker 1: mean even at the barber shops right they have barbers
- 17:53Speaker 1: inside of it. So it's interesting. Is this just domestic?
- 17:56Speaker 1: Is this something that's regional or are we going global
- 17:58Speaker 1: with this?
- 17:59Speaker 2: I mean the plan is go global, man.
- 18:00Speaker 6: I mean right now we are the focused domestically and
- 18:03Speaker 6: we have barbers in like Canada. I mean we do
- 18:05Speaker 6: have barbers on like different military bases abroad too. So
- 18:09Speaker 6: with the planning to go global, you had to raise money.
- 18:12Speaker 6: We have raised money up. How'd that process go? It
- 18:16Speaker 6: was definitely a process. But I think right it's multi stages.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Right when we first got out the game, me and
- 18:22Speaker 6: my boy had money saved up that got us through
- 18:24Speaker 6: like the first year. And then after that we went
- 18:26Speaker 6: to our colleges or alma maters. They have like if
- 18:28Speaker 6: you went to like most universities would have like an
- 18:30Speaker 6: angel group, so like you go to pitch their angel
- 18:33Speaker 6: group with the nail invests.
- 18:34Speaker 2: We did that. I went to James Madison in Virginia
- 18:37Speaker 2: shout out to the dukes.
- 18:38Speaker 6: And so after that, one of the things that we
- 18:42Speaker 6: did that was really dope was an equity crowdfunding. I'm
- 18:45Speaker 6: sure you guys are feeling like you know, And so
- 18:47Speaker 6: the thing that was dope about that is it allowed
- 18:49Speaker 6: barbers to invest in the company and so out the
- 18:51Speaker 6: gate we had like four or five hundred barbers who invested,
- 18:54Speaker 6: and like they were so bought in in the brand,
- 18:56Speaker 6: they galvanized on our behalf like they're telling everybody to
- 18:58Speaker 6: know because not only are they you an help them exactly.
- 19:02Speaker 6: So like that was like a big part of our story.
- 19:04Speaker 6: And then after that we did like accelerator, we did textles,
- 19:07Speaker 6: and then that led to us finally raising our first
- 19:09Speaker 6: bit of venture capital and that was.
- 19:12Speaker 5: One and the companies in the black now it's what we.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Just hip offerability like earlier this year. So that was exciting.
- 19:18Speaker 6: I just got to give them that congrass. Congrass appreciate.
- 19:21Speaker 1: What makes it dope is that and everybody at the barbershop,
- 19:25Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what you do in life, right, whether
- 19:27Speaker 1: you're accounting, whether you are teacher or your freestyff, You're going
- 19:31Speaker 1: and go to the barbershop at some point which is
- 19:33Speaker 1: why I think it's dope that you brought all this together.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Obviously his music's at Math. I mean, your show was
- 19:38Speaker 1: in a barbership, and in the barbershop. Man talk about
- 19:41Speaker 1: the importance of the barbershop in the community and why
- 19:43Speaker 1: this all makes sense?
- 19:44Speaker 7: Well, I think it. You know, as far as hip
- 19:47Speaker 7: hop goes, you know, a lot of a lot of
- 19:49Speaker 7: the buzz for an artists probably starts in the barbershop.
- 19:53Speaker 7: I would go into a barbershop, somebody be playing a mixtape,
- 19:57Speaker 7: you know what I mean, Yo.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Who's that this new clue? Say? Oh, well, you think
- 20:02Speaker 2: you better?
- 20:02Speaker 7: So a lot of these hip hop conversations would happen
- 20:05Speaker 7: in the barbershop. So it only made sense that we
- 20:08Speaker 7: would have this competition in the barbershop, bars barbershops. So Math,
- 20:16Speaker 7: let's ask the question, Yeah, what what happened? So what
- 20:25Speaker 7: are you referring to?
- 20:27Speaker 2: All right?
- 20:28Speaker 3: So, for people are not familiar Math, you know you
- 20:31Speaker 3: and you it was something that just took off like wildfire.
- 20:34Speaker 2: At least to me.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I'm not sure how long it was going on, but
- 20:36Speaker 3: my expert opinion that show started and then before I
- 20:41Speaker 3: know it, it's like everywhere viral like twenty one save.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I'm not sure what exact moment.
- 20:46Speaker 2: It was not the matter bad Joe for me. That's
- 20:48Speaker 2: when it was like.
- 20:49Speaker 7: It was every which Timeth came on three times for
- 20:52Speaker 7: the first time.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It was we had a conversation the first time. I
- 20:55Speaker 2: don't think you saw that was the tenth episode. Oh yeah,
- 20:59Speaker 2: we could. Figured we was in there, like, Yo, how's
- 21:01Speaker 2: he doing this?
- 21:01Speaker 1: It was because you were sowing clips but the episode
- 21:03Speaker 1: didn't drop and I'm like, yo, what is he just
- 21:06Speaker 1: mass recorder and just putting out pete like we were
- 21:08Speaker 1: studying it, like yo, this is this.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Is It was like two episodes per week, like switched clips,
- 21:15Speaker 3: five minute, ten minute clips. So, but then there's a
- 21:17Speaker 3: lot of things that started to happen, a lot of
- 21:19Speaker 3: ca holes started to change, and then abruptly the show transformed,
- 21:24Speaker 3: and it's kind of like changed formats, right, you know
- 21:29Speaker 3: you're no longer in the barber shop.
- 21:31Speaker 7: Well, the last episode I shot was not in the barbershop.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Do I want to give up the barber shop? No?
- 21:37Speaker 7: Well, I'm still in the process of trying to sort
- 21:39Speaker 7: it out with the landlord and the sub Lisa and
- 21:42Speaker 7: all that stuff.
- 21:42Speaker 2: So what happened. I never talked. I never like I
- 21:46Speaker 2: want to know, we never had.
- 21:47Speaker 7: This, Like I thought he closed his legs, but he
- 21:54Speaker 7: started by saying, life comes to your fat.
- 21:57Speaker 2: True. You know what I'm saying.
- 21:58Speaker 7: The success of the show, I wouldn't say it was
- 22:01Speaker 7: overnight because I started a little bit before twenty twenty.
- 22:05Speaker 2: COVID kind of shut it down.
- 22:08Speaker 7: So I was going live every single night ten o'clock
- 22:11Speaker 7: between the lines, just building up that fan base. So
- 22:14Speaker 7: when I restarted, it was like that fan base carried
- 22:17Speaker 7: over and the shop was going again. And you know,
- 22:22Speaker 7: everybody was hyped to be outside. So I had a
- 22:25Speaker 7: million people pulling up, like everybody I knew from from Brooklyn,
- 22:29Speaker 7: Queens wherever, all the old school heads I was connected,
- 22:33Speaker 7: connecting the dots to certain stories, and I was like, Okay,
- 22:36Speaker 7: we're gonna do nods and Tupac. So I need g
- 22:42Speaker 7: whiz over here. Tragedy, Kadafi. I need all the Queens
- 22:45Speaker 7: snicks to pull up and tell us what happened. Okay,
- 22:48Speaker 7: Now I'm gonna do all the jay Z stories. So
- 22:53Speaker 7: I'm gonna get this person to come over. I'm gonna
- 22:55Speaker 7: get this person and I would just start putting together
- 22:58Speaker 7: like that, and it worked, took off, and after a
- 23:01Speaker 7: while I started bringing on more co host and.
- 23:05Speaker 2: What happened with that? We were learning.
- 23:09Speaker 6: What happened with that with the rays my voice, I'm.
- 23:16Speaker 7: A man of my word, and if you give me
- 23:19Speaker 7: your word, I expect that you're going to stand on it.
- 23:23Speaker 7: And there were a couple of situations with the co
- 23:25Speaker 7: hosts where they didn't want to stand on their word
- 23:31Speaker 7: and it and it bothered me because it's like, Yo,
- 23:33Speaker 7: we got all the success. Why are you guys doing
- 23:37Speaker 7: things now? Like why are you messing up the whole
- 23:41Speaker 7: blueprint of the situation? Like one of the things that uh,
- 23:46Speaker 7: I don't even want to Okay, all right? So I
- 23:50Speaker 7: had to deal with Heineken. They signed contracts and the
- 23:57Speaker 7: show started to take off. Pocket watching people are like, Okay,
- 24:02Speaker 7: we signed these contracts to get paid this, but now
- 24:04Speaker 7: the show is doing this. So I'm like, just hold
- 24:08Speaker 7: on talking with the big guy, the guy that's in
- 24:11Speaker 7: court right now, and I'm trying to make the situation work.
- 24:15Speaker 7: The guy that's in court right you know what I mean?
- 24:19Speaker 2: You know what shout out to him?
- 24:24Speaker 7: You know, you know, I hope everybody involved in that situation, Like,
- 24:30Speaker 7: you know, they find their way through it, you know
- 24:32Speaker 7: what I'm saying. But while that's going on, one of
- 24:36Speaker 7: the things that I asked him not to do, they
- 24:38Speaker 7: went back and they did it, and there was a
- 24:40Speaker 7: lot of friction in between that. It was a whole
- 24:42Speaker 7: bunch of stuff, a lot of personalities and egos clashing,
- 24:46Speaker 7: and for me, I just I just try to keep
- 24:49Speaker 7: the drama away because I know in the shop, we're
- 24:52Speaker 7: selling friendship.
- 24:55Speaker 2: That's really what's being sold, friendship.
- 24:58Speaker 7: And if this turmoil, if there's fakeness, whatever, it's not
- 25:03Speaker 7: gonna work.
- 25:03Speaker 2: It's gonna pick up on camera.
- 25:05Speaker 7: And you know, I let a couple of people go
- 25:09Speaker 7: and then they turned into my biggest haters, and you know,
- 25:13Speaker 7: it is what it is. And the cycle just continued
- 25:15Speaker 7: every time there was a fallout. I didn't have the
- 25:20Speaker 7: contract that says, you know, you can't say nothing after this.
- 25:25Speaker 3: So, you know, in retrospect, because me and that it
- 25:29Speaker 3: happened a few times, do you think it was you
- 25:32Speaker 3: picking the wrong people or maybe you were a little
- 25:35Speaker 3: bit too hard as a leader, Like, just retrospectively looking
- 25:40Speaker 3: back on the situation.
- 25:41Speaker 7: I think a little bit of both. Because it's hard
- 25:44Speaker 7: to tell. It's hard to tell somebody who's done so
- 25:49Speaker 7: much on their own, like even as a kid, like
- 25:53Speaker 7: I was the type of person that if nobody had
- 25:56Speaker 7: my back, I'm still going to walk down that block
- 25:59Speaker 7: and say, yo, you forget your friends were fighting. I've
- 26:03Speaker 7: done so many things in my life where no one,
- 26:08Speaker 7: no one had my back that it's like it's hard
- 26:11Speaker 7: for me to say, you know what, I'm gonna try
- 26:12Speaker 7: to keep this together.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I'm always gonna think no, I'm gonna just keep moving.
- 26:17Speaker 7: So maybe it was me being tough as a leader
- 26:21Speaker 7: partially and expecting things out of people where I could
- 26:26Speaker 7: have forgiven certain things.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So I'm thinking about it and retrospect.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But looking forward, right number one, where does the show
- 26:33Speaker 1: stand going forward? And knowing what you know now, what's
- 26:36Speaker 1: the biggest lesson that you've learned going forward to saying, right,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I know we made a mistake there, that's some accountability
- 26:42Speaker 1: going forward.
- 26:43Speaker 7: This is what I'm doing. No compete, cause you know
- 26:51Speaker 7: what I'm saying and important, it's very important.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It is important.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But then also with something they people need to notice too,
- 27:04Speaker 3: because this is important for content creators to understand. There's
- 27:07Speaker 3: a thing when the YouTube algorithm starts to change, and
- 27:11Speaker 3: everybody felt that from a monetary standpoint, huge standpoint, all
- 27:15Speaker 3: of that. So it's like, it's difficult to run a
- 27:18Speaker 3: business when you're pretty much okay, banking, I'm hitting this
- 27:20Speaker 3: number every single long and then things change out of
- 27:23Speaker 3: your control. You don't really necessarily know how to go
- 27:25Speaker 3: about that, right, That's something that is not talked about enough,
- 27:29Speaker 3: But that happened.
- 27:29Speaker 2: That affected everybody across the board.
- 27:31Speaker 7: But if you're the person that's running everything, you're the
- 27:34Speaker 7: person that's like, okay, putting the guests together, controlling the
- 27:40Speaker 7: flow of the conversation, kind of sending people like we
- 27:42Speaker 7: want to go here, we want to go here, we
- 27:44Speaker 7: want to go here, all right. Then you're handling the
- 27:47Speaker 7: uploads and you know everything, Like no one in that
- 27:51Speaker 7: shop could tell me about the business of it because
- 27:55Speaker 7: I knew every aspect of it, and I control every
- 27:58Speaker 7: aspect of.
- 28:00Speaker 2: The things that I know.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Are like, I know, we did good this month, but
- 28:04Speaker 7: come January, that raid is going to drop and it's
- 28:09Speaker 7: going to be dead until May. So let's hold off
- 28:13Speaker 7: on whatever we got to do at this time. Odel
- 28:16Speaker 7: and people in them, they didn't understand that. They just
- 28:20Speaker 7: felt like what he got it? People, we did a
- 28:24Speaker 7: million of you and that comes to education. If you're
- 28:26Speaker 7: not then you think, oh no, well now he's stealing money.
- 28:29Speaker 7: He's like, no, I'm trying to.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we had this straight month and no level when
- 28:33Speaker 1: this episode dropped, was that an issue for the show,
- 28:35Speaker 1: like in terms of getting ad sense if you're on
- 28:38Speaker 1: YouTube because of the content, maybe because of profanity was
- 28:41Speaker 1: dead jabage.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I mean, of course, you know we're YouTube.
- 28:43Speaker 7: Their policies changed, like exactly rights bro right, and it's
- 28:47Speaker 7: like episodes that was hot and it was still moving,
- 28:51Speaker 7: all of a sudden it's demonetized because there's a new policy.
- 28:55Speaker 7: And so it's a lot of going back and checking
- 28:58Speaker 7: and you know, western of review and trying to read,
- 29:02Speaker 7: trying to take things out of the footage.
- 29:04Speaker 2: It's a lot. It's a lot. And like I said,
- 29:07Speaker 2: nobody else understood that but me.
- 29:10Speaker 7: So when it came to like, you know, people just
- 29:12Speaker 7: seeing like, oh yeah, I think the show is doing this.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I think they're doing that.
- 29:16Speaker 7: A lot of guestimations, a lot of and I just
- 29:19Speaker 7: don't like that type of shit, you know what I mean,
- 29:21Speaker 7: Like it doesn't work.
- 29:22Speaker 4: But they also don't talk about how hard it is
- 29:24Speaker 4: when you're dealing with how many how many people was
- 29:26Speaker 4: on there, it was like seventy.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Y'all five okay, so five and.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Some including me, So it's five people all with different personalities.
- 29:35Speaker 4: You know, all we as black men have been raised
- 29:37Speaker 4: and one to be the man. You know, it's like
- 29:39Speaker 4: we don't. They don't teach us to be a part
- 29:40Speaker 4: of it. So it's like I could be doing it
- 29:41Speaker 4: those his ors and nobody understands, like, it's hard for
- 29:45Speaker 4: you guys to be here still be rocking. Y'all deserve
- 29:48Speaker 4: credit for that because it is almost impossible to build
- 29:51Speaker 4: with most people because of their expectations of what Like,
- 29:55Speaker 4: just because you outside and people celebrate, y'all don't mean
- 29:57Speaker 4: we win it.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I mean that might be.
- 29:58Speaker 5: God sending us a sign saying we on the right path.
- 30:01Speaker 4: But winning is when we reach a certain goal, and
- 30:04Speaker 4: that's probably you know, that's that's something to be spoken
- 30:06Speaker 4: about because these I'm tired of it happened, everybody breaking up.
- 30:09Speaker 7: It takes discipline, man, it takes discipline, and you got
- 30:12Speaker 7: to respect and trust each other. But if you come
- 30:15Speaker 7: from a cutthroat business where you expect people to be cutthroat.
- 30:18Speaker 7: It's like those shadows who are going to follow you.
- 30:20Speaker 7: You're looking for what I mean? Yeah, are you seeing
- 30:23Speaker 7: those similarities?
- 30:23Speaker 4: Right?
- 30:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna come to you because you come from the
- 30:25Speaker 1: music industry, obviously in the content creation space.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Now it is a filthy game, man.
- 30:30Speaker 5: It's about the content creation. Oh I lost.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Everybody talk about it. I'm not actually feeling bathroom because
- 30:39Speaker 2: I'm like, at least you got to a million, like
- 30:40Speaker 2: I would.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Lost everybody when I ain't even wasn't in montage yet.
- 30:42Speaker 4: My people was leaving because, like they thought, people don't understand.
- 30:45Speaker 4: I'm a successful music exec. So I make seven figures
- 30:49Speaker 4: for music. I'm investing that. So because I want to
- 30:52Speaker 4: do a podcast, I paid everybody in.
- 30:54Speaker 2: The room, including my co hosts.
- 30:56Speaker 3: And then so it's like before you started making money,
- 30:59Speaker 3: what they.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Want because I already know that they're gonna come in
- 31:02Speaker 4: my office. They see how my office is, they like, oh,
- 31:04Speaker 4: he got it. You know what how much you want?
- 31:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna pay you for the money.
- 31:08Speaker 4: And I paid everybody and then we started and then
- 31:11Speaker 4: it started becoming their dream. Now, so now they're like
- 31:14Speaker 4: I got stuff to do, I gotta go shoot another
- 31:15Speaker 4: person podcast. Hold on, you weren't even shooting pot. I
- 31:19Speaker 4: like put I created this a sudden my cost left
- 31:26Speaker 4: in the middle of an in not compete clothes. Listen,
- 31:33Speaker 4: the crazy part is that, but this is how it works,
- 31:35Speaker 4: though we don't think about that in podcast. And as
- 31:37Speaker 4: soon as you said it, I'm like, yo, if I
- 31:40Speaker 4: have my phone, I would have text chests and mic
- 31:42Speaker 4: like no compete.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Cloth because it's something to think about.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Because what people don't understand is I'm putting you and
- 31:47Speaker 4: we just said it's like I'm putting you on my album.
- 31:49Speaker 4: I can't take that album out of stores no more.
- 31:51Speaker 4: It's like Evergreen. Once I uploaded and if they got
- 31:54Speaker 4: millions of views, I don't want to take it down
- 31:55Speaker 4: because I don't message you no more. So it's hard
- 31:57Speaker 4: to build in any space, y'all want to be honest.
- 32:00Speaker 2: You know, it's hard.
- 32:00Speaker 4: It's hard to build with broke people, and it's hard
- 32:02Speaker 4: to build with broke minded people, broke minded people no,
- 32:05Speaker 4: because because even if you broke, if you got the
- 32:07Speaker 4: right mentality, you're gonna get to the money. Broke minded people,
- 32:10Speaker 4: it's hard to build it because they don't understand. It's
- 32:13Speaker 4: like when people say them, Jordan's cost twenty dollars to make,
- 32:15Speaker 4: why would you pay one hundred and fifty?
- 32:16Speaker 2: Nobody factors in that somebody.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Has to fly it, they have to ship into the store,
- 32:20Speaker 4: somebody has to work at foot. Like all these people
- 32:22Speaker 4: get paid to get the shoot of us unless you
- 32:25Speaker 4: want to go to the factory yourself and buy all
- 32:27Speaker 4: the pantcil twenty dollars.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Like the two is that very few people want to
- 32:30Speaker 3: be underboss telling television.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Nobody does.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Very few people want to be underbossed. Like when they
- 32:35Speaker 3: get the underboss position, they want to become the boss. Yes, right,
- 32:40Speaker 3: because they see the line they even if it's not
- 32:42Speaker 3: what they even if it's that's not the reality, it's
- 32:45Speaker 3: what they think is reality. So they're like one part
- 32:48Speaker 3: of it, like I want to do this for myself.
- 32:50Speaker 3: I want to experience this. I want to go to
- 32:52Speaker 3: this party and get treated like this myself.
- 32:55Speaker 7: But they don't realize, like, you're undercutting what we're.
- 32:59Speaker 2: All right, you know what I mean? It's a selfish minds. Right.
- 33:04Speaker 7: If we have an interview show and you go create
- 33:07Speaker 7: an interview show.
- 33:11Speaker 2: What's happening here, you know what I mean. Like I
- 33:13Speaker 2: used to sell drugs, so I'm looking at it, like,
- 33:18Speaker 2: what my block, man, what's happening here?
- 33:21Speaker 7: You're taking the work where No, bro, I cain't get
- 33:24Speaker 7: piece of what you're doing.
- 33:26Speaker 1: You cut me now, you cut my legs. Every time
- 33:29Speaker 1: it's ego is disciplined. My man derk Falcon said something point.
- 33:33Speaker 1: He's like, sometimes being number two is being number one. Yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 1: because you've put your ego decide to let somebody else
- 33:38Speaker 1: go and and be the face of things. Right, the
- 33:42Speaker 1: name got the show, got your name on it. That
- 33:44Speaker 1: don't mean I'm not important to the show. I'm part
- 33:46Speaker 1: of it.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Sometimes we get blinded by the success of it and
- 33:49Speaker 1: it's like, nah, I should have my own ship.
- 33:52Speaker 2: My coest quick to go work for free? What nuts?
- 33:57Speaker 2: And andn't even on camera no more.
- 33:59Speaker 4: She's literally behind Like it's like if you have magic,
- 34:02Speaker 4: la Red would teach me that. He said, everybody is
- 34:04Speaker 4: just looking for their magic combination. Once you find the magic,
- 34:08Speaker 4: once you find it, keep the world out. Don't let
- 34:11Speaker 4: nobody touch it, because once they touch it, it's over.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you guys, all three of you,
- 34:17Speaker 3: because you'll have different perspective from a music standpoint, you
- 34:19Speaker 3: from a startup standpoint, you from coming in the game
- 34:22Speaker 3: on the podcast and content creation standpoint. But I had
- 34:26Speaker 3: a conversation with Charla Man and he said he felt
- 34:29Speaker 3: that people were not fully educated on like podcast industry,
- 34:35Speaker 3: which was leading them to have unrealistic expectations and was
- 34:39Speaker 3: leading them to turn down good deals in hindsight, but
- 34:43Speaker 3: they was looking at it from a standpoint of it
- 34:46Speaker 3: wasn't a good deal.
- 34:49Speaker 7: You know what, there's an element that you got to
- 34:51Speaker 7: add to that. You got to add to the you
- 34:54Speaker 7: have to add the other deals that you hear floating around.
- 34:58Speaker 2: All right, yeah, you know what, you got twenty, but
- 35:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna tell you I got one hundred and seventy.
- 35:10Speaker 2: It's the headline.
- 35:11Speaker 1: It's like podcasting business expected to generate eight billion dollars.
- 35:15Speaker 3: But then but then you start comparing yourself to things
- 35:17Speaker 3: that We never really got the full details of Cam
- 35:20Speaker 3: and Mason situation. We never really got the full no,
- 35:23Speaker 3: no disrespont, I'm just saying we never got the full
- 35:25Speaker 3: details of the million dollar for game. We never got
- 35:28Speaker 3: the full details of Joe Week. Nobody like in the NBA,
- 35:32Speaker 3: so it's transparent. We know how much Steph Curry signed for,
- 35:35Speaker 3: so now it creates cops.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 35:37Speaker 3: So now if you're a similar player with a similar
- 35:39Speaker 3: market value, you could say, Okay, now I this is
- 35:42Speaker 3: what I'm worth because X, Y and Z player got
- 35:45Speaker 3: that in this industry is all and nobody's you know,
- 35:49Speaker 3: saying so it's.
- 35:50Speaker 7: Like nobody's really so I'm gonna say this, nobody's really
- 35:54Speaker 7: sharing the information.
- 35:56Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say no names.
- 35:58Speaker 7: Probably there's a couple of people I called with questions
- 36:01Speaker 7: and when I got off the phone, I had more
- 36:03Speaker 7: questions than I started.
- 36:04Speaker 2: That's okay, And.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It was like, damn because they didn't know. They didn't
- 36:07Speaker 1: they didn't want to tell.
- 36:08Speaker 7: They knew either they didn't know what they didn't want
- 36:11Speaker 7: to tell, or someone else is really running them.
- 36:14Speaker 2: That's that's that's really what it is. They want to
- 36:17Speaker 2: tell you, but they ain't stop to learn it.
- 36:19Speaker 3: I think I think it's two things they don't know
- 36:22Speaker 3: because some people are just not fully educated and they
- 36:24Speaker 3: don't know, or they may they may know, and they
- 36:27Speaker 3: don't want to tell period.
- 36:29Speaker 4: And to me, the weird part is like, to me,
- 36:32Speaker 4: we should all be sharing info about podcasting, And to me,
- 36:34Speaker 4: if you're coming into podcasts and worrying about the cameras
- 36:38Speaker 4: and the views, you don't understand the concept in my mind,
- 36:41Speaker 4: Like I swear I've said this everywhere I go. I'm like,
- 36:43Speaker 4: I look at you two guys. You two guys like
- 36:45Speaker 4: you guys have the biggest invest festival in the world.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Twenty thousand Black people like those are people that probably
- 36:54Speaker 4: watched a few shows, but they.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Know who y'all are. It's like, it's like, to me,
- 36:58Speaker 2: that's the problem.
- 36:59Speaker 4: I have a podcast and it's like, this is an
- 37:01Speaker 4: opportunity to create a brand, to build something on. You're
- 37:04Speaker 4: so worried about, Man, how many views we got, Well,
- 37:06Speaker 4: if you don't have so many views we got, please
- 37:07Speaker 4: ask so much all these wires and cameras and people costs.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Well that's the So all right, you bring up a
- 37:12Speaker 3: good point, because that's the thing that a lot of
- 37:14Speaker 3: people are not taking advantage of it.
- 37:16Speaker 2: That causes problems.
- 37:17Speaker 3: When you only relying on views to get money, then
- 37:21Speaker 3: that's that's problematic. Let me just perspect, right, you got
- 37:23Speaker 3: to have products to sell, You got to have different
- 37:25Speaker 3: ancillary things where this should just be a commercial twenty
- 37:29Speaker 3: four stay anything that if you can get money from YouTube,
- 37:32Speaker 3: that's a blessing, but it shouldn't be your only.
- 37:34Speaker 4: But that's that's what we learn from hip hop like
- 37:35Speaker 4: these I'm in the music business. I promise you these
- 37:38Speaker 4: guys do not get royalties. They don't get royalties. They
- 37:41Speaker 4: just get advances. And once you go you get your money.
- 37:43Speaker 4: How you get it the people that was.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Here and here no more show you get show money
- 37:46Speaker 2: and that's how to get it.
- 37:48Speaker 4: So I want I'm saying that most artists don't make
- 37:50Speaker 4: money from recorded music like they make money from appearance
- 37:53Speaker 4: and show money, show money more everything.
- 37:57Speaker 3: The billionaires in our culture got rich off of as
- 38:00Speaker 3: like Jays like for liquor, did he became a billionaire
- 38:04Speaker 3: because the liquor?
- 38:05Speaker 2: Kanye became a billionaire for merchandise merchant.
- 38:07Speaker 6: The main thing is you want to use something to
- 38:09Speaker 6: build your brand. As long as you build your brand
- 38:10Speaker 6: and you build trust like through content or through like
- 38:13Speaker 6: rap or whatever, that give you that like that like
- 38:16Speaker 6: credibility that you can go and sell anything. Point That's
- 38:19Speaker 6: how jay Z, That's how manages record. That's how Kevin Heart,
- 38:23Speaker 6: That's how everybody's doing their brand today.
- 38:24Speaker 5: But look at look at academics. Academics is huge.
- 38:26Speaker 4: But he started with well, he was his own man,
- 38:28Speaker 4: but complex really put him on the map. Joe, even
- 38:31Speaker 4: Joe had got the complex like.
- 38:32Speaker 3: Well, and that's why turning. So sometimes the deal is
- 38:36Speaker 3: more than just money. It helps elevate your so now
- 38:40Speaker 3: you but you still keep your platform even when you're
- 38:42Speaker 3: not with that said comp period. So all right, so
- 38:47Speaker 3: for all of you three, do you think that not
- 38:49Speaker 3: having the right information is hurting us more with negotiating deals?
- 38:52Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 38:53Speaker 7: Definitely, definitely that's design though, But I got to say, okay,
- 38:57Speaker 7: all right, in the form and as far as it
- 38:59Speaker 7: entertainment field, a lot of people to succeed in. It
- 39:03Speaker 7: didn't come from business school, that's true, you know what
- 39:06Speaker 7: I'm saying. Like me personally, aside from from hustling, I
- 39:10Speaker 7: might have had a couple jobs here and it battle rap.
- 39:13Speaker 7: That was like hustling, that's not money. I had to
- 39:16Speaker 7: report to the government. I was getting cashed. You know
- 39:18Speaker 7: what I'm saying. It is what it is. So once
- 39:22Speaker 7: I got to this level with the podcast where it
- 39:25Speaker 7: was hundreds of thousands like coming through, it was like
- 39:28Speaker 7: I didn't. I didn't know what to do, you know
- 39:31Speaker 7: what I mean? And some of us come from a
- 39:33Speaker 7: family where there is nobody else you can add most
- 39:36Speaker 7: of us.
- 39:37Speaker 6: I mean, I'm thinking even the startups, like when it
- 39:39Speaker 6: comes to fundraising and trying to raise money, like to
- 39:41Speaker 6: grow your business, Like there's so much information you don't
- 39:44Speaker 6: know when it comes to like the other companies and
- 39:47Speaker 6: how they did their deals, like what were the metrics
- 39:49Speaker 6: that they got valued on? What was the different Like
- 39:51Speaker 6: how did this VC like analyze their business? And like
- 39:54Speaker 6: if you have a lot of friends who are other founders,
- 39:57Speaker 6: they can give you the inside scoop on like how
- 40:00Speaker 6: how this investor works, so like the metrics and kind
- 40:02Speaker 6: of you know, basically like how to run your deal
- 40:04Speaker 6: process right, But if you don't know that, you're going
- 40:06Speaker 6: in there blind and then the VC has.
- 40:08Speaker 3: All You got to be educated to ask a question
- 40:10Speaker 3: here exactly. I asked chat GBT a question for something
- 40:13Speaker 3: similar because I'm like, I wanted to just confirm and
- 40:16Speaker 3: it gave me a detailed answer. But like you said,
- 40:18Speaker 3: if you don't if you don't even have enough education
- 40:20Speaker 3: to ask no question asked, what are you gonna ask?
- 40:22Speaker 6: There's so many things right now that I'm so thankful
- 40:25Speaker 6: that I have friends who like are further along than
- 40:27Speaker 6: I do, because when like when we go and run
- 40:29Speaker 6: our process now to your point shot to chat lawyer, GBT, like, there's.
- 40:33Speaker 2: So many there's so much information.
- 40:34Speaker 6: I've been able to like ascertain to go out and
- 40:37Speaker 6: like hit them with questions on because you know, you
- 40:39Speaker 6: gotta get the best deal for everyone to vote.
- 40:41Speaker 4: But I can tell you what it is. I'm I'm
- 40:42Speaker 4: gonna be honest. I just think it's us. They don't
- 40:44Speaker 4: want us to know.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Like, let me tell you why I say that.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Brian Coogler, Brian Coogler, it's the biggest how many directors
- 40:53Speaker 4: have deals that we don't know they deals and everybody's like,
- 40:56Speaker 4: here's Ryan Coogler deal.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Immediately the world immediately the world knew.
- 40:58Speaker 4: But then he goes and said, I'm not the first
- 41:01Speaker 4: person to get this deal. I'm the first black person
- 41:03Speaker 4: to get this deal. And what happens when we see
- 41:05Speaker 4: one get all of us feel like we're going to
- 41:07Speaker 4: ask for it.
- 41:08Speaker 2: And that's what the scary part is. So it's like,
- 41:09Speaker 2: so like, for.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Example, I contribute to when I was in music and
- 41:13Speaker 4: I was.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Worked at my last job. It was like the gold Rush.
- 41:15Speaker 4: I mean, I can't even get to know you to
- 41:18Speaker 4: know if I want to work with you because you
- 41:19Speaker 4: so hot that everybody chasing you that I'm I'm just trying.
- 41:22Speaker 2: To figuret how much money you want?
- 41:23Speaker 4: So it's like you gotta look at it. We gave
- 41:25Speaker 4: an only chop an eight million, right, It's like, how
- 41:28Speaker 4: the hell I'm gonna tell him what to do now?
- 41:30Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Like everything he did got
- 41:33Speaker 2: him the biggest deal in history. How do I go
- 41:35Speaker 2: tell him now what to do? Right?
- 41:37Speaker 4: So to me, I think it's how they treat us.
- 41:39Speaker 4: And what I would say is is that we all
- 41:41Speaker 4: should be picking up the phone saying, here's what's in
- 41:43Speaker 4: my deal. And we just don't trust each other, but
- 41:46Speaker 4: that's what we should be doing. Quietly, Yo, here's my deal.
- 41:48Speaker 4: I did an interview where I told people you should
- 41:50Speaker 4: get a buy sell.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I didn't know what that was.
- 41:53Speaker 4: But Polo, my boy, Polo to Don didn't deal with
- 41:56Speaker 4: and that I did at Sony and he renegotiated and
- 41:59Speaker 4: they I'm a by sell. And even he knew that
- 42:02Speaker 4: because his lawyer was Peter Paterno, who represented some of
- 42:06Speaker 4: you two all these other big people. That was like,
- 42:07Speaker 4: here's what you need in your deal, So now we
- 42:09Speaker 4: know that asked for it. One last thing, I remember
- 42:11Speaker 4: when I was doing Chopper deal, and I'm gonna say it,
- 42:13Speaker 4: nobody knows it was me when he was doing his deal,
- 42:15Speaker 4: and Chopper's lawyer is a black guy. So when he's
- 42:17Speaker 4: sent it the deal, he's like, he wants eight million,
- 42:20Speaker 4: And then he had his legal fees in there, and
- 42:21Speaker 4: lawyers get paid five percent of the deal. So he
- 42:24Speaker 4: was old four hundred thousand, so when he puts in
- 42:26Speaker 4: his deal, he puts in a number way less than
- 42:29Speaker 4: four hundred.
- 42:30Speaker 2: So think about it.
- 42:31Speaker 4: I could have just been like, I'm saving the company money. Nah, hell,
- 42:35Speaker 4: I call a lawyer. Why are you gonna ask for
- 42:36Speaker 4: two for the number you asked for? He said, oh, man,
- 42:39Speaker 4: you think he gonna give me five percent?
- 42:40Speaker 2: I said, they give it to Joe Cats the piece
- 42:44Speaker 2: Joe Casts, I'll let it give it to Joe Cats
- 42:45Speaker 2: put it in a deal. So he puts it in.
- 42:47Speaker 4: The back of the deal, sends the deal over, and
- 42:49Speaker 4: then had a legal at the company. He's like, man,
- 42:51Speaker 4: somebody might have hip him to because now the only
- 42:53Speaker 4: thing different is the lawyer want his full fee. He's like,
- 42:56Speaker 4: by the way, that lawyer is black. He's like, only
- 42:58Speaker 4: somebody wants to hit them. Why didn't you hit the
- 43:00Speaker 4: right right right?
- 43:01Speaker 2: By the way, That's the only reason why we got
- 43:03Speaker 2: the deal, because now the lawyer.
- 43:04Speaker 4: Is like, wow, Ray, thank you for looking out for me.
- 43:06Speaker 4: So let me tell you what's going on. He wants this.
- 43:08Speaker 4: If you get this, this, and this, I think we
- 43:10Speaker 4: can get it done.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And that's how we got the deal.
- 43:12Speaker 4: So it's like, but if I didn't be transparent with
- 43:14Speaker 4: my brother, we don't get there and we need more
- 43:16Speaker 4: of that.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I wanted to do it, Like you said, you were
- 43:19Speaker 1: able to call Polo right, yep. Building that circular trust
- 43:22Speaker 1: is tough. Right, I did the deal. I wasn't able to.
- 43:24Speaker 4: I actually did the deal, and then I was leaving
- 43:27Speaker 4: to go to Enniscope and I was trying to take
- 43:29Speaker 4: Polo had a artist named Kane Brown was like one
- 43:31Speaker 4: of the biggest country artists in the world, and he
- 43:33Speaker 4: was going crazy. So I'm trying to bring him the
- 43:35Speaker 4: inn the Scope. So Sony is like, no, you over
- 43:38Speaker 4: here with us. So Polo's like no, I can go
- 43:40Speaker 4: because I have proof that I sent them. I submitted
- 43:43Speaker 4: it when I was working there, So Polo's like, here
- 43:44Speaker 4: on my proof, race submitted it. Y'all didn't pass. So
- 43:47Speaker 4: they go, well, let's change the deal term so you
- 43:48Speaker 4: to stay there. So I couldn't get mad at that.
- 43:50Speaker 4: He gets to buy sell now if you wanted now.
- 43:54Speaker 4: So cash Money has a by sale, Todd Moskins has
- 43:56Speaker 4: a by seal. These are things that if the artists
- 43:59Speaker 4: are really yours, like when they send JERMAINI pre call me.
- 44:02Speaker 4: He got mad at me when they send you home
- 44:04Speaker 4: as a CEO. Mostly like when they send Puff home,
- 44:06Speaker 4: they keep his artists. When if you get rid of
- 44:08Speaker 4: Cash Money, Wayne Drake, everything with them goes with them.
- 44:11Speaker 5: That's why you have a by selling deal.
- 44:13Speaker 4: I remember after I put that, just that little clip,
- 44:15Speaker 4: like thirty seconds, everywhere I went for like a month,
- 44:17Speaker 4: every black executive.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Bro, why are you doing that? Man? Mother? For everybody
- 44:21Speaker 2: asked for by sales now, I'm like, what don't we
- 44:23Speaker 2: want us to know? What is the problem. It's almost
- 44:26Speaker 2: like it's almost like it's not for us yet.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Let's let them get the most out of it and
- 44:30Speaker 4: then we'll give it to you by selling.
- 44:32Speaker 5: Okay, So here's a by sale.
- 44:33Speaker 4: So a by sale means that at some point in time,
- 44:37Speaker 4: when the deal expires, when we get to a certain point,
- 44:40Speaker 4: we're gonna value or bring an outside company to give
- 44:43Speaker 4: us a valuation of what the company is worth. And
- 44:45Speaker 4: at that moment, so say the company's worth for one
- 44:47Speaker 4: hundred and eighty million, At that moment, you can go
- 44:50Speaker 4: cut the universe will check for one hundred and eighty million.
- 44:53Speaker 4: And now you could take it to Sony like Tom
- 44:55Speaker 4: Mosquiz did when he took a little Dirk rod Wave
- 44:58Speaker 4: took He took them all the son So Sony probably
- 45:00Speaker 4: gave him three four hundred million, he gave in the
- 45:03Speaker 4: scope a universal or whatever he owed them, and he
- 45:06Speaker 4: got a whole new deal. So it just means you
- 45:08Speaker 4: own it like most of us don't own nothing in
- 45:11Speaker 4: the music business. But if you ever buy sale, it's yours.
- 45:14Speaker 4: They cannot get rid of you, and if they do,
- 45:16Speaker 4: they got to pay you. The biggest cash out of
- 45:18Speaker 4: history was a guy named was a guy named Clive
- 45:21Speaker 4: Calder who had a deal with BMG and he did
- 45:24Speaker 4: a buy sale. He had to buy sellers deal and
- 45:26Speaker 4: basically they had to give him two point seven billion.
- 45:28Speaker 5: This is the year that n SYNC. Yeah, this year
- 45:31Speaker 5: at n SYNC, Britney Spears and.
- 45:34Speaker 4: What's the other group backtreet Boys for all the biggest
- 45:37Speaker 4: groups in the world. And he went to BMG and
- 45:39Speaker 4: was like nope, and he cast out. That's what brought
- 45:41Speaker 4: BMG down, by the way, just a fun fact by sale.
- 45:44Speaker 4: So that's why they don't like giving it to you
- 45:45Speaker 4: because once you apply it, you got to cut me
- 45:48Speaker 4: a check or I gotta cut you a check. Yeah, yeah,
- 45:51Speaker 4: but the game forever. But white boys have been doing
- 45:54Speaker 4: it forever. It's just we don't know about it.
- 45:55Speaker 2: So like that deal Ryan Cooker got, they all got it,
- 45:59Speaker 2: we just don't know about it.
- 46:00Speaker 1: He has it, Yeah he does. There's plenty of directors
- 46:03Speaker 1: who own the field. Even Spike to a certain sense
- 46:05Speaker 1: owns his content. But like the fact that you're given
- 46:08Speaker 1: game and not kicking down a ladder is like you
- 46:10Speaker 1: become a guy that people can now call in the
- 46:13Speaker 1: VC world, Like when you were doing it, who's the
- 46:15Speaker 1: person that you're calling? Even math, it's like, yo, we
- 46:17Speaker 1: making six figures in the content space? Are you calling
- 46:20Speaker 1: other content creators? Are you calling dudes that came up
- 46:23Speaker 1: because they like who are you getting the infant? Who's
- 46:26Speaker 1: the circle of trust as you're doing it?
- 46:27Speaker 6: I mean for me, it's definitely founders I've met along
- 46:30Speaker 6: the way, like founders of companies where we either have
- 46:33Speaker 6: like the same investors, so like we're like we're pertfolio companies,
- 46:36Speaker 6: so like we share an investor. And then other founders
- 46:38Speaker 6: I've met just networking, like at different events, and like
- 46:41Speaker 6: that circle of trust because like we all trust trust
- 46:44Speaker 6: each otherer. We're going through the same shit, Like that's
- 46:46Speaker 6: how we've built this rapport and through that's how we
- 46:48Speaker 6: feel comfortable enough sharing like some of these deal terms.
- 46:51Speaker 2: And then like you know, we.
- 46:53Speaker 6: Like we've been talking because like we want to start
- 46:54Speaker 6: making a lot more transparency out there.
- 46:57Speaker 2: And I even see tea people on.
- 46:59Speaker 6: TikTok or like the platforms today like where they are
- 47:02Speaker 6: giving like real inside game from inside of the VC,
- 47:06Speaker 6: so they're letting you know, as a VC how we
- 47:08Speaker 6: look at the business too. So like I think just
- 47:10Speaker 6: the the internet, cell phones is given a lot more
- 47:14Speaker 6: people the ability to share information and so like if
- 47:16Speaker 6: you find the right people to follow, like yeah there's yeah,
- 47:19Speaker 6: you can get what you need to know.
- 47:20Speaker 5: For me, it was Wallow Wallow.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Wallow showed us to my studio like three or four
- 47:23Speaker 4: months into my pot and was like, you're gonna blow up.
- 47:26Speaker 2: I'm like, how do I make money?
- 47:28Speaker 5: He's like this this is He showed me his deals.
- 47:30Speaker 4: He showed me the Amazon offers, the barstool office. He
- 47:33Speaker 4: was the first person that I just met him by
- 47:35Speaker 4: the way, like, literally, what's up man, Nice to meet you.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Let me show us my deals. This just need to
- 47:39Speaker 5: look for.
- 47:39Speaker 4: We need more of that with each other because they're
- 47:42Speaker 4: going to keep as long if we're not together, they're
- 47:43Speaker 4: going to keep being able to excess out and let
- 47:45Speaker 4: who they want in and give them the info as
- 47:47Speaker 4: long as they don't tell anybody, and then they go
- 47:50Speaker 4: after you.
- 47:51Speaker 1: That's crazy. I actually ran to Wallow in Vegas the
- 47:55Speaker 1: same thing. Yeah, and he was like, Yo, I love
- 47:57Speaker 1: what y'all doing. Keep killing and keep killing it. And
- 47:59Speaker 1: then he looked at the He's like, Yo, this is
- 48:01Speaker 1: the deal Amazon's off.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Friend. Yep, we're not taking it. Yeah, he said, okay,
- 48:06Speaker 2: but he's like, nah, we work more. I'm like, go
- 48:08Speaker 2: get it.
- 48:08Speaker 4: And literally I called him like when I called while
- 48:10Speaker 4: he's like, Ray, just keep doing this. You got to
- 48:12Speaker 4: keep doing it. So it's like you have those people
- 48:13Speaker 4: but we but I think in this space we understand
- 48:16Speaker 4: it more now that it's mature than you kind of
- 48:19Speaker 4: know who the giants are, eyl you know, like for
- 48:22Speaker 4: a million, Like I'm trying to get to a hundred subs,
- 48:24Speaker 4: so you got a million ready, so you know who
- 48:25Speaker 4: the giant saw. But even me, it's like I love
- 48:28Speaker 4: it cause it's like he's still gonna mess with me.
- 48:30Speaker 4: I'm still gonna mess with y'all. We still because we
- 48:31Speaker 4: understand what it is. It's like we need more of that,
- 48:34Speaker 4: more fellowship, more talking to each other.
- 48:36Speaker 2: More.
- 48:36Speaker 5: AO, this is should be in your deal. Don't let
- 48:38Speaker 5: them do that.
- 48:39Speaker 4: I've done that my whole career because I've always gotten
- 48:41Speaker 4: lucky in my deals, Like I never like I always
- 48:43Speaker 4: went to my deals.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Like man, I just want a hundred thousand, man, and
- 48:46Speaker 2: then we get a million. How we get that? And
- 48:48Speaker 2: it's like because it was luck.
- 48:49Speaker 4: It was like God and God is like, hey, don't hoard,
- 48:51Speaker 4: don't hoard the information I give you because I could
- 48:54Speaker 4: have gave it to somebody else. So that's why I'm
- 48:55Speaker 4: big on like just sharing as many if you wanted.
- 48:57Speaker 2: This out there, who's in you circle? Now?
- 49:00Speaker 3: Well, I was math might be a little different though,
- 49:03Speaker 3: because it's a all right.
- 49:06Speaker 2: We're picking on that.
- 49:09Speaker 7: Like I said, I put out a lot of those
- 49:11Speaker 7: phone calls and it wasn't the same reception.
- 49:14Speaker 3: But do you think for you, Okay, you might. You're
- 49:18Speaker 3: a different persona than Ray.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Right. You're a nice guy. You're a good guy.
- 49:23Speaker 3: But I'm just saying you might be a little bit
- 49:26Speaker 3: more threatening. No, no, what gives you?
- 49:30Speaker 2: He just said he wants to see it going to
- 49:31Speaker 2: projects and fight people like what are you doing?
- 49:34Speaker 7: But not in that way, in a way that a
- 49:37Speaker 7: lot of the other who would whoever you would call
- 49:40Speaker 7: our competitors. They took gills early, contemporaries, right, contemporaries, they
- 49:46Speaker 7: took deals early.
- 49:48Speaker 2: This thing was and still is independent.
- 49:52Speaker 7: Got got to a million subscribers without a network without
- 49:57Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying, corporation organic organic. So like, yeah,
- 50:02Speaker 7: a lot of times I felt lonely, like how do
- 50:05Speaker 7: you do?
- 50:06Speaker 2: Oh you oh, I don't know. You gotta figure it out.
- 50:11Speaker 7: One person literally told me, I don't know, you gotta
- 50:13Speaker 7: figure it out that's crazy.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Wow, that's hating. That's hate. That's crazy.
- 50:19Speaker 7: That's crazy, say to a more Friday, that's the question.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Where you go after you said that? That makes sense. You'
- 50:36Speaker 2: all the same folk, cover the same world. It's like
- 50:39Speaker 2: it's a little different Friday.
- 50:47Speaker 3: We would have happy that sharing. For me, some people
- 50:50Speaker 3: are more a little open door.
- 50:52Speaker 4: You know, it's value and opening the doors. It's value
- 50:56Speaker 4: and being the first person. It's value in leading is valuing,
- 50:59Speaker 4: and I think our people are just learning that because
- 51:01Speaker 4: it hasn't been like we seen our killers get killed
- 51:03Speaker 4: before they get a dollar in their pocket and it's like, nah,
- 51:06Speaker 4: it's value in that. Like people like Jay, you know,
- 51:08Speaker 4: these guys are leading, making all this money.
- 51:10Speaker 2: It's value in this.
- 51:11Speaker 4: It's just if you're gonna look at them like you
- 51:12Speaker 4: supposed to be my brother, give me the information, you're
- 51:14Speaker 4: never gonna get it. Well.
- 51:15Speaker 3: The thing about it, I think it's two types of mindsets.
- 51:17Speaker 3: It's an abundant mindset and scarcity mindset. Talk that scarcity
- 51:20Speaker 3: mindset looks at it like when I climb up the
- 51:22Speaker 3: lad I'm kicking the ladder down to make sure that
- 51:24Speaker 3: nobody else gets up. Because now I'm in the penthouse
- 51:26Speaker 3: by myself, and I could just run around.
- 51:28Speaker 2: But that's a limited mindset because how much can you
- 51:30Speaker 2: really do by yourself?
- 51:31Speaker 3: Exactly now, The abundance mindset is I'm gonna get as
- 51:35Speaker 3: many people in the penthouse as possible so we can
- 51:37Speaker 3: take over the building. That's what people don't understand. It's
- 51:40Speaker 3: like you're looking at it from a limited mindset and
- 51:43Speaker 3: you might have been hurt before. You might have tried
- 51:44Speaker 3: to help somebody and they screwed you over. I get
- 51:46Speaker 3: that part of it. That's never going to be long
- 51:50Speaker 3: term success. You're actually hurting yourself by not having more.
- 51:56Speaker 3: Like if there's thirty seven people that have one hundred
- 51:59Speaker 3: million dollars, that's only better for the industry as opposed
- 52:02Speaker 3: to one person.
- 52:03Speaker 7: Right as time, it keeps that industry alive, it actually
- 52:06Speaker 7: grows that industry.
- 52:08Speaker 6: We were talking about it even just without barbers, that
- 52:10Speaker 6: same type of abundance versus scarcity, because like there's some
- 52:13Speaker 6: barbers out there who don't want to be on a
- 52:14Speaker 6: platform like The Cut because they don't want their clients
- 52:18Speaker 6: to be seen by other barbers, so they're more afraid
- 52:21Speaker 6: of losing business versus realizing being on a platform like
- 52:24Speaker 6: the Cut opens you up to the million plus people
- 52:26Speaker 6: who are on a platform searching for barbers every day.
- 52:29Speaker 6: So just like the difference between like the abundance versus
- 52:31Speaker 6: scarcity is huge.
- 52:32Speaker 4: It's probably the biggest problem in our community, the abundance
- 52:35Speaker 4: versus scarcity mentality. Like while we don't help each other, Like,
- 52:37Speaker 4: but I'll say this, most of us that have gotten
- 52:40Speaker 4: to a certain table, usually we've been made to think
- 52:43Speaker 4: once we got to that table, you're only here because
- 52:45Speaker 4: you're not like them.
- 52:46Speaker 3: Oh why a lot of people This is another part
- 52:48Speaker 3: where they tell you a lot of people, like especially
- 52:50Speaker 3: from the nineties, early two thousands, they've reached the level
- 52:55Speaker 3: of success differently than how we've reached success. We've reached
- 52:59Speaker 3: success independently through cell phonest, so our mindset is completely different.
- 53:04Speaker 3: They've reached success by a corporate executive putting them in position.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Taking that.
- 53:10Speaker 3: So their level of success is all they know is
- 53:15Speaker 3: a white person picked me up and put me in
- 53:17Speaker 3: this position, and as long as I served that person right,
- 53:20Speaker 3: and the same thing that how they taught them, how
- 53:22Speaker 3: they treat them. Now they passing that down and that's
- 53:25Speaker 3: that's the gatekeeper mentality.
- 53:26Speaker 4: That's what's happened in the music industry right now. That's
- 53:28Speaker 4: why I quit it, because that's exactly what's happenings. Just
- 53:31Speaker 4: you're not getting picked because you're great. You're getting picked
- 53:33Speaker 4: because you're friends with this person and he doesn't he
- 53:37Speaker 4: wants you in position because he feels like you're going
- 53:40Speaker 4: to protect him from them.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Hasn't it always been like that?
- 53:43Speaker 4: I mean, well it was, but once I think once
- 53:47Speaker 4: it got bigger and bigger and bigger, it started the
- 53:49Speaker 4: game got bigger, money got bigger, it started becoming like
- 53:51Speaker 4: playing keep away, to the point where it's like like
- 53:53Speaker 4: when they put Elliott Grange in Craig Calman. See, you
- 53:57Speaker 4: gotta understand, Creig Calman has been at Atlantic longer than
- 54:01Speaker 4: Elliott has been alive in the CEO position, not like junior,
- 54:05Speaker 4: and he got to see you on the last he's
- 54:06Speaker 4: been to CEO for the last twenty thirty years. And
- 54:08Speaker 4: you put somebody younger him who doesn't know any of
- 54:10Speaker 4: those people.
- 54:10Speaker 2: So what you just did?
- 54:11Speaker 4: Anybody has those relationships cut Lucy's son. Yeah, yeah, But
- 54:16Speaker 4: by the way, Elliott is good at his job, but
- 54:18Speaker 4: he's just young and he doesn't care. He's from that unk,
- 54:21Speaker 4: you know that generation, like, oh, y'all needs gonna know nothing,
- 54:23Speaker 4: and we know how that winds up playing out, right,
- 54:26Speaker 4: So it's just that mentality. So now he basically brings
- 54:28Speaker 4: and hiss you guys who are all younger than him.
- 54:30Speaker 4: And what happens to all those guys who's been there
- 54:32Speaker 4: twenty thirty years? They going home to figure it out.
- 54:34Speaker 4: So when you start seeing they sending people home and
- 54:37Speaker 4: it's it's like, I'm cool on that, man. I go
- 54:40Speaker 4: home myself. Bro, That's how I've lived my life just
- 54:42Speaker 4: for that reason. Like I don't play that.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Are there any more stars and music? Right?
- 54:46Speaker 1: We have we have a core and we keep seeing
- 54:49Speaker 1: them win awards and go on to it, But are
- 54:52Speaker 1: there new stars?
- 54:53Speaker 2: Right? I went to a stadium, we went to the
- 54:55Speaker 2: Catcher joining.
- 54:55Speaker 1: It was a stadium tour, and I started thinking to myself,
- 54:58Speaker 1: I'm like, how many artists can do that?
- 55:00Speaker 4: And the reason why they can do that is because
- 55:02Speaker 4: they it's like having a big brother in the building, like, oh,
- 55:06Speaker 4: we're gonna make this. So you know, the businesses, it's dirty,
- 55:10Speaker 4: but it's only dirty because behind closed doors, we're treating
- 55:13Speaker 4: you like a product, but you can a person, right,
- 55:15Speaker 4: So it's like, if this mic don't work, we like
- 55:18Speaker 4: give me another mic, you know. But if Mike is
- 55:19Speaker 4: human and we thought away, it's like, how could you
- 55:21Speaker 4: do that to that mic? He's been there with you.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Twenty years and it's like, you know what I mean?
- 55:25Speaker 2: So I think that's the problem.
- 55:26Speaker 4: So we do have stars, we don't have any superstars.
- 55:30Speaker 4: And the reason I don't have any superstars because we
- 55:31Speaker 4: don't have people the super game superstars like what like
- 55:36Speaker 4: Scissor Traviscott superstar. A superstar to me is when you
- 55:40Speaker 4: hit that space where you you can't go under where
- 55:43Speaker 4: you are like jay Z call it the white hot space,
- 55:44Speaker 4: where's like you're trying to be hot.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I'm trying to hit that white space where.
- 55:47Speaker 4: I can be breaks a superstar. Drake's a superstar, Travis
- 55:51Speaker 4: Scott's superstar. Future is a superstar? Future is he a superstar?
- 55:56Speaker 5: Futures a superstar?
- 55:56Speaker 2: Yeh? Future a superstar? He might. He don't have the
- 55:59Speaker 2: he doesn't have the present his music.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Makes superstar No, I think men me. He's a creative
- 56:07Speaker 4: director for lad Ben. So when you got big European brand, Yeah, yeah.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just saying I'm thinking in terms of can
- 56:14Speaker 1: you do a stadium?
- 56:16Speaker 3: They can't do a stadium, no, but but neither could Kendrick.
- 56:19Speaker 2: Yeah, but he did what he did.
- 56:23Speaker 5: Very important. But that's like on the run, same concept stadium.
- 56:29Speaker 3: He's always done that though he partnered with Heart Justin
- 56:34Speaker 3: Tim Yes, it does that.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Smart, he's smart. Arenas the Justin Tip Blake one was
- 56:42Speaker 2: baseball fields.
- 56:43Speaker 4: That's still stadium like baseball baseball stadium, baseball, football stadiums,
- 56:47Speaker 4: Basketball is arena, true, okay, and hockey.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Yes, let's have this conversation, shall we, Because barbershop, you
- 56:53Speaker 3: guys have a freestyle battle competition, right, so it's about
- 56:57Speaker 3: rap people that rap, So let's have a few rap conversations.
- 57:02Speaker 2: So Frail, you up for that? So I love this.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I'm watching scores.
- 57:13Speaker 3: The first one, you know, shot to punch my guy punch.
- 57:16Speaker 3: So you you guys had an interesting take as far
- 57:19Speaker 3: as New York rappers, and it was entering and I
- 57:24Speaker 3: actually called both of you gentlemen. You did and you
- 57:28Speaker 3: have Jay at number one, okay, but then you have
- 57:31Speaker 3: you had fabulous and Jadakiss.
- 57:33Speaker 4: No, he had he had Jadakiss' number two, and Fabulous
- 57:36Speaker 4: is number three, three, and I agreed.
- 57:37Speaker 3: And then you agreed, and then and then the four
- 57:41Speaker 3: and then four was a debate. I think it might
- 57:43Speaker 3: have been Nick yeah, and then you had nads at
- 57:47Speaker 3: the tail end of this situation, he did. You didn't
- 57:50Speaker 3: even have noads at all. So my, oh, yeah, this
- 57:53Speaker 3: is this is a nos thing going on.
- 57:56Speaker 4: This is the same thing when I'm in the place
- 57:58Speaker 4: to address it because I know how you feel about it.
- 58:01Speaker 7: So it's like, let's go, this is this is this
- 58:03Speaker 7: is the guy that depicts Nelly over Noine.
- 58:05Speaker 4: No I did not that on the record, No I said,
- 58:10Speaker 4: I said, Nellie is the better songwriter.
- 58:11Speaker 3: That's crazy, A songwriter maker, made a song, a hit maker, okay,
- 58:16Speaker 3: so okay, because he has a number one single.
- 58:18Speaker 2: He'show ten million albums first time out, so all right.
- 58:21Speaker 2: So I had to call I personally called both of
- 58:23Speaker 2: these gentlemen, because by the way, it was like, looks
- 58:26Speaker 2: like in the morning, he's not playing and I.
- 58:28Speaker 3: And Jada Kiss is actually know Jada Kiss personally, and
- 58:33Speaker 3: Jada Kiss he's from the same area, hometown. Hero, He's
- 58:37Speaker 3: a legend, and Fabulous is one of the dopest rappers
- 58:40Speaker 3: of all time like Ball for Ball bunchlines like he's
- 58:43Speaker 3: super dope. But we got to stop this disrespect of
- 58:46Speaker 3: nas please please, like we have to stop the disrespect.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Now. I want to say this. I told this is
- 58:51Speaker 2: a shot.
- 58:51Speaker 4: I'm gonna say this on record, Okay, So this is
- 58:54Speaker 4: how I look at So here's why I do this.
- 58:55Speaker 2: First of all, so I was born in the Bronx.
- 58:57Speaker 4: I left New York right when I turned twelve, so
- 58:59Speaker 4: you gotta I left in New York and it's like
- 59:02Speaker 4: Eric b rock Kim, like I'm at the Apollo toughen
- 59:04Speaker 4: Leavel everything. I go to the South and it's just
- 59:06Speaker 4: like a whole new scene and they got.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Their people and they think they people are just as
- 59:10Speaker 2: good as New Yorkers, but y'all never heard of them,
- 59:12Speaker 2: but they heard of y'all people. So it was always
- 59:14Speaker 2: like that.
- 59:15Speaker 4: So my best friend, he really and if he was here,
- 59:18Speaker 4: he would swear to God that keiloh Ali is better
- 59:21Speaker 4: than jay Z, Like you can't.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Tell him that.
- 59:23Speaker 4: You can't tell him the Wu Tang clan is better
- 59:25Speaker 4: than Yin yan't Twin, you can't he like Nigga, they got.
- 59:28Speaker 2: The girl Trking and popping. It's like that's what matters
- 59:31Speaker 2: to him.
- 59:31Speaker 4: So that's what really made me so when I when
- 59:33Speaker 4: I'm so, I told her, y'all, nods to me is
- 59:36Speaker 4: top five greatest MC's alive, God MC, like I have
- 59:40Speaker 4: to give him that right the same way you would
- 59:41Speaker 4: give Avatar one of the greatest movies of all time,
- 59:44Speaker 4: but I'd rather watch Juice. So what I was basically
- 59:47Speaker 4: saying is I rather listen to FAB than listening. I
- 59:49Speaker 4: personally rather listen to FAB than NADS, And that's what
- 59:52Speaker 4: I meant, But like I listened to NADS.
- 59:55Speaker 2: But I also I'll be honest with you, y'all. You
- 59:57Speaker 2: know this, y'all both know, y'all two, that's side of ROM.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Y'all know you guys arguing me about NAS, y'all know
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: only about ten of them really no NAS music. The
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: other ones is just the ninety that don't want to
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: disappoint y'all from from whatever period.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: What I'm saying is that you don't understand like you
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: don't understand like jay Z said, because the nigga wear
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: coofy don't mean that he.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: You understand something.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: Cousins in the Bronx right now and Harlem right now
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: that I swear to God, y'all, I'll sit on the
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: corner with them, and three minutes them talking, I'm like,
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: what the are you talking about?
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: It's like, yo, b you know.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Because the mathematics and this this is you know, like
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: what are you talking about? Bro? Like this is going right? No,
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: I don't go you know, political prisoners and the mathematics?
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: How was this? John's so I just want to personally,
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: He's saying, plays off listen, I am listen listen.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: I am illmatic the album I know them, but worth word,
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: I am allmatic, like with all those albums. But I'm
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: saying after a while, it got to the point where
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: it was like you're still going deeper into that, like
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: it's it's.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: It's it's you got to be ready to listen, Like, okay,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: you listen to you.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: You don't want to watch listen and I want to Okay,
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: at night, every night I go to sleep, I gotta
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: go sleep to a movie.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: I have to, But like I can't go to sleep
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: to Malcolm.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: X The Nerve. But I'm so conscious, gosh, wait a minute,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: you know what the problem is, ship, But I don't
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: want to go to sleep So what do you think
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: about three thousands? Yeah, you talk about three thousand. He's incredible, right,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: you're not going to sleep to love below. No, he
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: played the music. You got a whole album playing the
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: fullest of t If you if you are from Atlanta,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: if you are from Atlanta, you know.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: Andre three thousand. We all went to high school with them.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: Those are real Atlanta niggas. This new Atlanta is not.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: Andre is real Atlanta. He from the South Southwest. Like,
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: it's just different. But your point is Andrea is ill.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: But I understand if he's in my top, but I
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: honestly if he's.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Not in yours.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: Like if you say Andre, if y'all told me Who
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: Tang is bigger, that better than Outcast? As crazy as
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: that sounds to me, I could respect it because I'm like,
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: y'all was.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: On the block when Who Tang was out Like I
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: got a cousin that was on the block. That sounds
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: crazy to you. To me, Who Tank is better than Outcasts?
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: To me, Outcast is the only group in history that
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: every album went bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger to the
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: last one.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: They want ten million and then they win Album of
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: the Year. So it's numbers. No, it's our money. You
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: can't buy a grammy baby, you can't buy that you
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: that's your peers. What was the last it was the movie?
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: No?
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Well like the movie Joynesia. What was the name of
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: the movie. I forgot stop it bigger, bigger to stop?
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Who take us? Never had a movie? I'm not saying that.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I'm not saying they did.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: Because I love method man, I love I respect and
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: love wo. I just was in the South, so you
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: gotta understand. I'm coming to New York when I'm fourteen
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: and my cousin's playing me Biggie and tell me his
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: new can they Biggie? And I'm going to the South
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: and they playing around here. It's like it was just
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: different in the South. They had the girl.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I'm not mad at the outcas have they got classic album?
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Like nobody nobody going to block girl waiting on the
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: block in New York. I don't want my girl on
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: the block wearing Timmland Somebody, Yo, did you hear how
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: did you hear what that nigga said last time? That verse?
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Why did you hear it? Bairl? When did the ladder?
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Where did the ladder take over? Hold hold did not
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Can we the na sing? Can we just stop the slander?
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: First of all, I want to say something.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: Can can we say that? I want to say this.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: I don't let me tell you what this land. Nod
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: started as a guy in my show named Jack Danz
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: who's from Queens. He calls himself the Queensiest nigga in history.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: That is not my right around? Does he not do
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: everybody in the rule? So Jack is arguing with me
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: about Nods like, I'm like, you crazy NOD verse andreds
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: what are you talking about? So I could spin any
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: Andre verse the NOD verse. He's like you as person.
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: Me, So then I would be on that and I'll
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: tell everybody like, I know you name your son have
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: the no, I'm not mistakens. I know you know a
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: NODS verse. But like I'll challenge somebody like, oh b
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: I'm like, give me a NODS verse.
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: I'm not the one see anybody's verses. That's just I'm
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: justing how you feel growing up in New York City.
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: You know in the nineties. Man, Okay, it was written.
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: Itmatic Stealmatic, one of the greatest.
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: First I'm one of the few people who believe it
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: was written was his best album.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: That's me, really, that's me. I agree with that. It
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: was written too, I am, and it was written. Oh no,
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna tell you something in some places.
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: I am.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: So this is we had this conflict. One of the
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: best hip hop nights of my life.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Me and Shotty are having dinner with Nash and I'm
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: telling him, Yo, it was written is a great album,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Bill Maddick is the greatest hip hop album of all time?
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: And I was like, what you think I'm asking? We
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: asking him and he's like, you know, it's like I mean,
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: it's like right subjective. So we went on for about
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: three hours. We haven't read wine.
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: We go in.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: I'm telling them how that that album changed my life,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Like he was the first person I wanted to be,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like it's different. It wasn't
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: like I want to be Jordan. I wanted to be
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: nas Right. And then about two months later we see
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: him again at dinner. The same day we see him,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I think Rollstone puts out the best hip hop albums
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: of all time?
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: What's number one?
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: You know what?
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: He was like, you got it? Armatic is a safe
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: bet that's ninety percent seen.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Fat every jail Mac is a safe bet, but it
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: was written is a cultural favorite.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: What what? What what this I am having? I want
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: to talk to the mayor.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: I am okay, yeah, I'm just making sure confused the
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: albums like I ain't.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: It was Retten. I'm being honest. I mean on a
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Street Dreams, I gave the power, I fowered the world.
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: It was like it was like a brand new Martial
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: Laws style. It was written, was like great mastery.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Of right, like fly yeah. Yeah. But you gotta understand
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: when Big was like took home ready to die study ship.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Now you some credit because it was written and I
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: was flying suits all of that. It was elevation.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Matic was grinding me in the lobby with all Matic
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: was for manna's on the block and queens and.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: I'm talking about I don't want to say niggas. You say,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: but I'm on the black dad. I'm trying to be
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: trying to work, but men didn't sound right, so I
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: gotta say niggas. But it was for niggas that was
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: on the block, that was trying to get educated. You know,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I know them, dude. It was in illmatic nobody.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Here's the best wayscribe Allmatic is a portrait of New
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: York City in the early nineties.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah, And I wasn't there. I left in ninety
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: left her ninety one. So it's like, it was whole
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: question you left, So let's let's let's do this before.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: So these ag is from my neighborhood.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: They from my building, right, So I remember show Business
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: a g drop, right, so you know you got that
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: fa all this stuff. But I'm saying it was I
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: was still young in it. I didn't get into hip hops.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: I was like, like really into it. So I was
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: like fourteen and when our cast dropped, that should changed
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: my life. It was like I told, I told, I
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: pissed them off. I told them I think soul full
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: goodie my bilbum. It made a more bigger impact on
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: my life than allmadic me personally. He was wearing survice
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: something good marble, talking about FBI surveillance and all of that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: But it was slow. It was like the original Illuminati. Dudes. Yes,
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: there was original speaking all right. I might I might
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: have been a follow it. I might be. It's just wordy.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: By the way. I'm in the music business. I made
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: my money from words.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: Let's do this let's balance the scales. We talked about
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: New York, Let's talk about Atlanta. Please, what's your who's
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: your own your Mount Ushmore in Atlanta?
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Uh? Out cast?
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: That's as a group, that's that's one spot as a group.
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: No one person gotta be one person. Oh well, Andre
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: and Big Boy deserved to be half of it. That's spots.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: And then I'm gonna give it to I'm gonna give
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: it to TII I think is the most important rapper
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: in Atlanta history. Hip is the most important rapper in
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: Atlanta history. And then I'm gonna give the fourth one
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: to future?
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: So why are we disrespecting Jez? And We're not? We
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: have we forgotten that. You have to figure I didn't
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: have Outcasts too.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: It would have been between Gez and Chris because I
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: see a lot of people forgetting I see a lot
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: of people forget Gez.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Like they're talking about Gucci. Look, I like Gucci. Gucci
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: didn't have no relevance in up here. Well, when I
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: was in school in Baltimore, when Trap one O one
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: came out, Yes, yo, y'all.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Does not have an album better than Thumb Motivation one
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: on one. Look, this is a real story. Yeah, it
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: does not have an album better when trapped.
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: When the Motivation one on one came out that night,
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: I listened to it with my man in this car,
- 1:09:40Speaker 7: and by the end of the night I was in
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: a crack spot.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Okay, okay, so let me tell you, Okay, let me
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: tell you.
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: So, let me let me tell you something, like you know,
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: like you're not in New York, like like you know
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: New York, like certain guys here, like madter to y'all,
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: like you know in New York, like certain guys matter here.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: Like it's like Math has a reputation where it's like
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: he just said, I'm walk in the middle of your project,
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: call you outside and fight you for that, Like nigga,
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: what are you talking about?
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Like you get killed.
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: That's how he moves, right, So New York has different
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: ways of moving and Atlanta is different most people.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Gez is Atlanta, but he you got to understand, like I.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: Would just set a me and Shakazulu shot at the
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: shock that he calls me like, yo, wady, come roll
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: me to this little thing I'm doing.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I go and down.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: See tip.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: Tip is the city he cares about the city. GenZ
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: moved a way out for a little while and then
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: he came back. But gz gz is more like trenched,
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: and Ez is more like he is, but from like
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: a I'm a ball outside smoking sabar on me.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Tip. It's like what they might want to somebody trying
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: to kill himself. Bad Tip is like.
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: You know, because I'm like, yo, all these like even
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: twenty one Savage when he was talking after that versus battle,
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: twenty one Savage was on clubhouse like yo, I never like,
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: we ain't listen to Jez. We listening to Gucci. Gucci
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: is the dude. But they was like, you got to
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: understand when Jeezi was at his peak, he ain't do
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: songs with He didn't come to that with Gucci to
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: the exact opposite Gucci.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: This song with me gooes. They did song with the
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Young twenty one.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: So they have a reverence for him because he extended
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: himself with Jeez was more close, and he did songs
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: with his crew, but that crew didn't really go anywhere.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: So it's like the reverence for him in Atlanta is
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: going to be different because he didn't put his.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Arms around the whole entire thing's.
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: On the restaurant, yep, Jiz well, if outcast could be one,
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: I think about him, but you gotta look at it.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: I think ourcast ran the nineties, Tip ran the two
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: thousands up until and then Future took over around twenty
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: twelve and has been running.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: So to me, it's like those three they both was
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: running it. Gz was Jesus in that and that. Yah no, no, no, listen,
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: I undert what y'all saying. But y'all, y'all looking at Atlanta, Atlanta,
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: I'm talking about in the city. You gotta understand something.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Y'all gott to.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Stay some Tip crew, Doug Clay who passed away like
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: this crew, they that's our city. Like you ain't gonna
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: go nowhere and see somebody from Tip's crew. You're not
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: gonna see nobody with Giz nowhere. It's almost like how
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: they how how they talk about how master P and
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: bird Man was in New Orleans, Like master P was
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: like the outside guy that was putting New Orleans on
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: the map, but he was messing with West Coast people
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: when Baby was the homegrown. Tip is the home grown
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Atlanta and Jeezi was from Making he came to Atlanta.
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: We embraced him because Atlanta is like that and then
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: but he he left when he got popping, he moved him.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I don't even know if he lived in Atlanta. Now
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: it's like it's like.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: If you would say Dip said versus French Montana, like
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: French Montana, Sol Larcus and all.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: But way bigger. He's east in l A. He's not
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: like you're gonna see Jim Jones at one time and
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: that and that's what makes you love him more.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: So that's why I would say ti I because tis
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: most important artist. But I think the best musical artist
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: from Atlanta outside of Outcast's future. Now, I think he
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: passed tip about little Baby. It's too too early, and
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: and and I would say, so this how I look
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: at it. As big as Thug is, as fire as
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Thug is, I still will put Thug as the one
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: bet on the futures one A for their generation because
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: remember I was Futures A and R at the point
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: he was trying to sign Thug. So I remember we was.
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: I got hit with a season desist from Warner like
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: y'all can't. So the future was on before Thug. That's
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: why I got to give him that because paint the way. Yeah,
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: he paid the way, but thug influence is crazy. But
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: Future to me musically passed them past. Tip to me,
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: I think it's just it's just it's just it had
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: like most artists is this, most artists is really this.
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: His has been kind of this. So he he's gotten
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: bigger every year compared to like, you know, Tips, and
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: he puts out music all the time. And that's another thing,
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: is like, that's why I had to give it to
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: musically because Tip, to me, his music is an age
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: as gracefully as as Jez's did to me. But like
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: like I'm a music guy, like I loved and I'm
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: always like in the studio, like what you want to make?
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Like who would you remake? Who? Sound?
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: Jez sound is more today. But Tip is just the
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: guy like too important nigga, the crips, the bloods. If
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: you a street nigga, if you anything in Atlanta, if
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: you're a governor of you anything, you probably know Tip
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: of got his number. He's that much to the city.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: And that's why we love slid salad both of them,
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: salad both of them. But he just he can't like
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: it's a kid like the mayor. I remember when when
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: when the when the pandemic happened and they was doing
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: the riots. When the little girl got killed at that Wendy's.
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: The mayor went on TV and said, Tip killer, Mike,
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: get down here, like it's like, those are our guys.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: So Tip is that and he's killing Mike's side. So
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: that's why I got to give it to him and
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: kill him. I don't get enough credit. I'm gonna say
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: that every chance like that. He's one of the greatest
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: to ever do it. But we don't give him credit
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: because it came later in life.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: He was on the Ottawa sont but it came later.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: That's how I started. By the way, we can argue ody,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: I told you that's debatable with y'all want to argue
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: with y'all got do that?
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: We got because like like because I understand what y'all saying.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: But I think that's the thing about hip hop. We
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: don't allow hip hop to be It's almost like it's
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: New York's no hit me out real quick. Let me
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: tell what I mean.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: What I mean by that is like, like, y'all, remember
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: I'm doing a podcast in the South.
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: Every time I speak on East Coast hip hop, ship
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: your country.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: You're gonna read the comments country as up.
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: I was like, damn, I don't have an opinion on it.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I say future, He's what like Atlanta's been in for
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: twenty years.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: Of culture, but y'all owned the conversation. Atlanta has the culture.
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: New York holds the conversation. Whatever New York say is
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: what's going. It matters if we say something in Atlanta,
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: it don't matter, like.
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: All right, So would you allow, like, uh, somebody that
- 1:15:37Speaker 7: runs like a dojo in Atlanta to tell like Jojo kari?
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: What you allow like somebody has a dojo in Atlanta
- 1:15:46Speaker 7: to tell a shallon monk like you ain't kicking run.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: So he just called Atlanta and monks monks as what
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: I'm saying. I get it, I get it. I'm mad
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: at it. But you can't get mad when Atlanta starts
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: talking feeling like they that Atlanta. Thank you, bro, But
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: that's twenty twenty five. Atlanta, like Japanese, was the Chinese
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: like samurai? And what do you think about the winners competition?
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: Right right right? I want I want the favorite yo.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: He shut it.
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: He shut it down with one rhyme from New York.
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: Listen I'm asking listen, I expect nobody from Atlanta coming
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: there with hibar lot of you.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: I spend nobody from Atlanta to coming no ball, It's crazy.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I expect him coming from Here's the.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Beauty of what you guys are doing, right, Okay, because
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: yes there is one winner, but technically everybody that's on
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: is a winner, right because they're getting the platform to
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: showcase their talent.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's about the platform. It's about it's about showcasing yourself. Like,
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: That's what I want artists to understand. It's not always
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: about being the full package. Sometimes it's about just saying,
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: here's a little bit of what I do. What you
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: think the world like, That's how I started. My first
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: six months of putting up content was on a cell phone,
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: and everybody I want people was like, y'all love your podcast.
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't even have a pot. I'm just
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: putting content on. I wouldn't even put it on YouTube.
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: It was just on Instagram. So you know, you just
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: got to start where you are. That's why I was
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: doing it, Like, just go in there and just rap.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: If you could wrap, you don't need no beat, just wrap.
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: Give the audience a chance, and I'll hope somebody from
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: this gets signed.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna make that happen. When is it? When is
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: the visuals of what you're doing? How are you gonna
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: put this together? For one absolutely ig? Right now?
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: At the cutout you can go and find like the
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: competitors for every city, and then we have another ig
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: off the top freestyle specifically for this competition.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: And that's what we're about.
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: The flood, all the competition, all the competition's uh content,
- 1:17:40Speaker 6: so you can see it. And honestly, like I said,
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: like there's some incredible artists here, somebody's gotta get.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: Signed, Like I swear, bro if I was in it,
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: I sign them right now. If I was in it,
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: like right now, that kid is incredible. Any that will
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: surprise us, I want you to under stay, but guess what,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: I'm gonna make the music.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: That's what I do. We'll call Nelly and see if
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: you get ready for us. Hope that you can't. I
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: hope he can.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: Nellie's fire shouting ten million records from from Saint Louis.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Country and Nellyville, and he got a bunch of the
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: album ships right sign.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: In the world. That's not type Leve if say something that.
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: Nelly was from west Chester, if Nelly was from Young Beer,
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: he was anything in New York, Nelly would be considered
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: one of the greats of all time.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: And he deserves him doing units and pimp Juice and
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: us the best he got Jake, by the way, shout
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: the whole give he's one. He's a He's a legend.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: As far as his being selling legend, it doesn't always
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: equate to being respected as the best rapp bur.
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: Can you I want your found on that a little bit?
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: Can you?
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: I mean that he's I want him just found that.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: You're right, but I would love to hear you your reasoning.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: Can I can? I can punch? I need you here.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: It's not how many records did Ice Ice Baby So,
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Ice Ice Baby so to white white babies. You can't
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: to white white babych He was like third Baby, two Legit.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Quit sold a lot of rep.
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: And then guess what, as soon as he started that,
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: he was off to the races to go over there.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: You watch the movie. When you see the.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: Movie, you see when he's performed two Legit, you know
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: he was performing white people too.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: So sometimes it's not that and Nelly wasn't that's a
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: see it is like a nigga that hard. That was good.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: That was good, But you know, Nelly had Nelly. Nelly
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: still came from Saint Louis, where nobody cared about him.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: So he had to do a lot more than than
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: just make a good song. He had to prove he
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: deserved to be here, and he's one of the best
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: songwriter artists in the world.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: It's a little bit harlem for a couple of years.
