- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody on dan Horde, and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast. The Only just Begun addition, as
- 0:13Speaker 1: we take an in depth look at Saturday's preseason opener
- 0:16Speaker 1: at Kansas City, the unofficial start of the Zach Taylor era.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up, you'll hear radio replays from the game, locker
- 0:24Speaker 1: room comments from players and coaches, and Dave lapp Them
- 0:27Speaker 1: will join me for postgame analysis. Plus in this week's
- 0:31Speaker 1: Fun Facts Conversation, it's cornerback Dray Kirkpatrick on a wide
- 0:36Speaker 1: variety of topics ranging from growing up a preacher's kid
- 0:39Speaker 1: in Alabama to what would surprise us about his college
- 0:43Speaker 1: coach Nick Saban. All of that is straight ahead, but first,
- 0:47Speaker 1: here's a quick reminder that you can have the latest
- 0:49Speaker 1: edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:54Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify,
- 1:00Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest convention since refrigerated kit Cats.
- 1:07Speaker 1: One of the many perks of traveling with the Bengals
- 1:10Speaker 1: is that our awesome flight attendants pass out candy bars
- 1:14Speaker 1: on the flight home. For me, that means grabbing a
- 1:17Speaker 1: king sized kit cat, placing it in the freezer when
- 1:21Speaker 1: I get home, and then enjoying the refrigerated goodness in
- 1:25Speaker 1: the days that follow. But here's a key warning. Don't
- 1:29Speaker 1: put a Snickers in the freezer. You might lose a tooth. Now,
- 1:34Speaker 1: let's get to football. Many of the bengals best players
- 1:37Speaker 1: didn't take the field in the preseason opener at Kansas City,
- 1:41Speaker 1: including aj Green, Joe Mixon, Giovanni, Bernard Tyler, Reifer, Geno Atkins,
- 1:46Speaker 1: Karl Lawson, and Will Jackson, either due to injury or
- 1:51Speaker 1: to make sure they don't get hurt in a game
- 1:53Speaker 1: that doesn't count. But Andy Dalton did take the field.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It's important for him to get at least some live
- 2:00Speaker 1: varience with Zach Taylor calling the plays, and things could
- 2:03Speaker 1: not have gone better. On the Bengals opening drive, third
- 2:06Speaker 1: down and eleven at the Kansas City forty yard line,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Autum Tate goes in motion out to the right, just
- 2:11Speaker 1: outside the numerals shotgun snap. Dalton, looking left now dumps
- 2:15Speaker 1: it off to a running back for a screen tray
- 2:17Speaker 1: ViOn Williams charging up the numerals, he'll pick up a
- 2:21Speaker 1: first down. On third and eleven, he gets tackled at
- 2:24Speaker 1: the Kansas City twenty seven. Dalton floats one four tight.
- 2:28Speaker 1: He high points the ball and he pulls it in.
- 2:31Speaker 1: He's tackled inside the one. It will be first in
- 2:34Speaker 1: goal as autum Tate used his height to pull it
- 2:38Speaker 1: in over chart various ward. Trevion Williams remains the running back.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Dalton gives it to him again and Williams goes low
- 2:45Speaker 1: and takes it into the end zone for an opening
- 2:48Speaker 1: touchdown for Cincinnati. We are in the locker room with
- 2:51Speaker 1: rookie running back trey ViOn Williams. Let the records show
- 2:54Speaker 1: the Bengals scored a touchdown on the opening drive of
- 2:56Speaker 1: the preseason, and you scored it in your first NFL
- 2:59Speaker 1: preseason game. You've got an ear to ear grin. It's
- 3:01Speaker 1: a great moment, man. It's crazy. You know, growing up
- 3:04Speaker 1: you have wishes of planning in NFL and just like
- 3:07Speaker 1: just walking on the field before the game, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: just thinking like wow, this is this is actually happened.
- 3:11Speaker 1: You know, me being in my first NFL game and
- 3:13Speaker 1: then being able to escort at NFL touchdown and my debut.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You know, it's a blessing. So I thank God and
- 3:18Speaker 1: thank my teammates. And thank his organization for giving me
- 3:20Speaker 1: an opportunity. It was a fourteen play, seventy five yard
- 3:23Speaker 1: touchdown drive that chewed up nearly half of the first quarter.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Dalton went seven for nine for eighty yards and only
- 3:30Speaker 1: made one bad throw slightly under throwing Josh Malone and
- 3:34Speaker 1: what would have been a thirty nine yard touchdown. Yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 1: it just surprised me a little bit. I wasn't ready
- 3:39Speaker 1: to really get it out there, and so I left
- 3:43Speaker 1: it short. Unfortunately that the drive shouldn't have been a
- 3:46Speaker 1: fifteen play drive. It should have been a ten play drive.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But I mean for us to overcome overcome that too.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But yeah, it was close. Considering that it Zach's debut.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Was it cool to go back to the sideline after
- 3:58Speaker 1: the opening drive and essentially say, okay, how's that? Yeah?
- 4:02Speaker 1: I thought it was good. Now obviously happy for him.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You know, to to get the ball, get the kickoff
- 4:09Speaker 1: and drive down, score touchdown. I think that's that's what
- 4:12Speaker 1: you want to do. I mean, the first time being
- 4:14Speaker 1: the head coach, first time out there, you know, call
- 4:17Speaker 1: and plays for us, it's you want to score every
- 4:19Speaker 1: time you got the ball, and so for us to
- 4:22Speaker 1: do in the first one was big. Dalton was done
- 4:24Speaker 1: after one drive, and then the NFL's reigning MVP took
- 4:29Speaker 1: his turn. Twenty three year old Patrick Mahomes started the
- 4:32Speaker 1: Chiefs first drive with a thirty seven yard laser to
- 4:35Speaker 1: Travis Kelcey. That was the big strike. On a seven
- 4:39Speaker 1: play eighty three yard touchdown drive second and goal from
- 4:42Speaker 1: the one for KC. Mahomes takes a shotgun snap. It's
- 4:46Speaker 1: a handoff to hide Andy thunders into the end zone
- 4:49Speaker 1: for a Kansas City touchdown. Mahomes was four for four
- 4:52Speaker 1: for sixty six yards. It also had a ten yard run.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Here's Bengals linebacker Hardy Nickerson on why the Chiefs are
- 5:00Speaker 1: so darn hard to defend. They come out in all
- 5:02Speaker 1: type of formations, all type of different plays, different runs
- 5:06Speaker 1: with passes, combos off of it. So it was a
- 5:09Speaker 1: lot of It was a lot of plays on the perimeter,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, chasing sideline the sideline definitely we see a
- 5:16Speaker 1: lot kind of in our offense. So it was it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: one of those games where you're running a lot, you
- 5:22Speaker 1: get a little tired. I would think more like exhausted
- 5:25Speaker 1: from chasing the fastest team on offense in the NFL.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The Chiefs already had Tyree Hill and Sammy Watkins. In
- 5:33Speaker 1: the second round of the draft this year, they selected
- 5:35Speaker 1: wide receiver me Cole Hardman out of Georgia, who ran
- 5:39Speaker 1: a four three three forty at the combine. Here's a
- 5:43Speaker 1: jet suite Hardman to the ten, the five and into
- 5:46Speaker 1: the end zone for Kansas City touchdown that gave the
- 5:50Speaker 1: Chiefs of fourteen seven lead, and a field goal in
- 5:52Speaker 1: the final minute of the second quarter made it seventeen
- 5:55Speaker 1: seven KC. The Chiefs were the highest scoring team in
- 5:59Speaker 1: the nf FELL last year, and when the Bengals faced
- 6:01Speaker 1: them in Week seven, Cincinnati didn't force a single punt.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The Bengals forced four of them on Saturday Night, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: since it was a preseason game, the sure handed Alex
- 6:13Speaker 1: Ericsson was not. The Bengals punt returner Phillips waits for
- 6:17Speaker 1: this punt back at the twenty five. This one much better.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Phillips back pedaling, good hang time. He tops it at
- 6:23Speaker 1: the nineteen. This time it does not bounce right back
- 6:26Speaker 1: into his stomach. There's a pile at the nineteen yard
- 6:29Speaker 1: line Kansas City and the Chiefs recover. It's a killer.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Two plays after the second muffed punt of the night
- 6:36Speaker 1: by Darius Phillips. Chase Litton threw a touchdown pass to
- 6:40Speaker 1: Darwin Thompson, giving the Chiefs at twenty four to seven lead.
- 6:44Speaker 1: The Bengals got three points back on a forty seven
- 6:46Speaker 1: yard field goal by Tristan Viscano in his NFL preseason debut.
- 6:52Speaker 1: The next time the Chiefs punted, Quinton Flowers went back
- 6:55Speaker 1: to return it. Call quit launches it, Flowers, that's it bounced.
- 7:00Speaker 1: There are a couple of Bengals right there. It might
- 7:03Speaker 1: have hit a Cincinnati player on the leg. Yeah it did,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and the Chiefs recover. Unbelievable. Chiefs will take over at
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Bengals thirty five yard line, and that led to
- 7:12Speaker 1: a fourteen yard touchdown pass from Lytton to Dion Yelder
- 7:15Speaker 1: that made it thirty one ten going to the fourth quarter.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The biggest bright spot in the second half of the
- 7:21Speaker 1: Bengals was the play of rookie quarterback Ryan Finley, the
- 7:24Speaker 1: fourth round draft pick out of nc STAY directed a
- 7:27Speaker 1: nine play, sixty seven yard drive that ended with the
- 7:30Speaker 1: bengals second touchdown of the night. From the ten yard line.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Ryan Finley catches the shotgun snaps scanning the defense. Now
- 7:38Speaker 1: he frows it has caught at the seven at Ellis,
- 7:40Speaker 1: We'll run it into the end zone for a Bengals touchdown.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Blue coverage that time, nobody picked up back out of
- 7:47Speaker 1: the backfield. Finley stepped up in the pocket and he
- 7:51Speaker 1: surveyed everything through right, never came back to the left,
- 7:53Speaker 1: stepped up and said, oh my gosh, nobody's got my
- 7:55Speaker 1: running back, No linebacker, no safety's got my back out
- 7:58Speaker 1: of the backfield. Little pitch and catch for a touchdown.
- 8:01Speaker 1: We're in the locker room with rookie running back Jordan Ellis,
- 8:03Speaker 1: who found the end zone in his first NFL preseason
- 8:06Speaker 1: game on that touchdown pass from Ryan Finlay. It's got
- 8:09Speaker 1: to be a nice feeling to catch the ball, turn
- 8:11Speaker 1: around and don't see anybody standing in your way from
- 8:14Speaker 1: the goal line. It's definitely crazy my first touchdown, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: be untouched, but man, it's definitely it definitely still feels surreal.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Doesn't even feel like it really happened. But just bless
- 8:25Speaker 1: my God to behind my first touchdown my first game.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's just a blessing and I'm just
- 8:31Speaker 1: looking forward to many more in the NFL. Finlay finished
- 8:34Speaker 1: thirteen for eighteen for one hundred nine yards and had
- 8:37Speaker 1: a passer rating above one hundred before his final throw
- 8:41Speaker 1: of the night was intercepted. I felt really comfortable. It was,
- 8:46Speaker 1: you know, just watching Andy and Jeff go before me.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I just felt like, uh, you know, going there and
- 8:51Speaker 1: just you know, keep trying to move the ball down
- 8:52Speaker 1: the field. And I felt really good. As far as
- 8:56Speaker 1: assimilating the offense as it's come on a day to
- 8:58Speaker 1: day basis everything for you there, absolutely, that's that's part
- 9:02Speaker 1: of the fun for me and this offense is it's
- 9:06Speaker 1: a pretty it's pretty ingenious offense, and um, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: excited obviously it was very base tonight, but excited for um,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know, for Andy to have just all all those
- 9:15Speaker 1: stuff at his disposal, so that'd be fun. The Chiefs
- 9:18Speaker 1: scored the game's final touchdown with one fifty six to
- 9:20Speaker 1: go to win thirty eight to seventeen. Like most preseason openers,
- 9:26Speaker 1: it was ugly at times. Each team had eleven penalties,
- 9:29Speaker 1: The Bengals only managed to cleanly catch one out of
- 9:33Speaker 1: four punts, and the Bengals defense allowed four hundred yards
- 9:37Speaker 1: to eighty five passing and one fifteen rushing Dave Lapham
- 9:42Speaker 1: spoke to Zach Taylor in the locker room a few
- 9:44Speaker 1: minutes after his first ever game as a head coach. Defensively,
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know, I thought, initially the guys were in position
- 9:51Speaker 1: to make some plays. We're just gonna step up and
- 9:52Speaker 1: make them. And then overall the physicality and the tacklings
- 9:55Speaker 1: got improved. A lot of guys were in position just
- 9:58Speaker 1: look like they're excited. And then and so that excitement
- 10:01Speaker 1: leted them wearing down a little bit as that game
- 10:03Speaker 1: got on, and guys got to step up and rack
- 10:04Speaker 1: up and make some tackles. And you know, we had
- 10:07Speaker 1: a minded sticks a few times and let him back
- 10:10Speaker 1: in it with some depis and so they'd score on
- 10:12Speaker 1: the next play. And then special teams, I thought that
- 10:14Speaker 1: the depth has got to step up. You know, I
- 10:16Speaker 1: thought the first units played well on special teams. We
- 10:18Speaker 1: got to be better on the partment returns. You know,
- 10:19Speaker 1: two tournaments there. That's gonna lose you a lot of games.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And so those guys got to be a little more disciplined.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Thinking back to when we met this morning, you said,
- 10:26Speaker 1: you know, I want and you get the ball out
- 10:27Speaker 1: of his hand. Quickly, and I want him take a
- 10:29Speaker 1: deep shot. I'll be a son of a gun man.
- 10:30Speaker 1: He's getting the ball out of his hand, moving it
- 10:32Speaker 1: and like you said, overcoming first and twenty you know,
- 10:35Speaker 1: with a holding penalty. And then he took the shot
- 10:37Speaker 1: and just that ball was a little bit under throne obviously,
- 10:40Speaker 1: but it was there for him. So I mean, the
- 10:41Speaker 1: thing unfolded just the way you said it would. Sometimes
- 10:44Speaker 1: those deep balls, the easiest ones are the hardest ones,
- 10:46Speaker 1: you know, because you think it's such a layup that
- 10:49Speaker 1: you don't quite you don't quite throw like you normally would.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And it was good. He got another opportunity there, just
- 10:55Speaker 1: just real quick after that, and it threw nice ball
- 10:57Speaker 1: over there to Audum tay and aud made the play.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So and he's poise is something that has always really
- 11:02Speaker 1: excited me. He's always a very calming influence on the
- 11:04Speaker 1: group and doesn't panic. And that show tonight. So what
- 11:08Speaker 1: what's your message to your team? You know after a
- 11:11Speaker 1: game like this, is it to you know, um, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: move on, or is it let's learn from mistakes or
- 11:17Speaker 1: is it a combination of all that? What do you do?
- 11:19Speaker 1: This is the NFL that that should have been a
- 11:20Speaker 1: game that came out of the wire and we'd have
- 11:22Speaker 1: a chance to win. But the turnovers and the penalties
- 11:25Speaker 1: are going to lose you games the NFL against really
- 11:27Speaker 1: good football teams like the Chiefs, and so fortunately for us,
- 11:30Speaker 1: this one doesn't count. We get to turn around in
- 11:31Speaker 1: five games and and uh, you know, correct those mistakes
- 11:35Speaker 1: that we made and give our guys the second opportunity,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and so excited that we had to quick turnaround and
- 11:39Speaker 1: get a chance to go redeem ourselves. Finley went thirteen
- 11:42Speaker 1: sixteen hundred and nine yards and a touchdown pass um
- 11:45Speaker 1: what do you think his play? Just you know, I
- 11:47Speaker 1: know you haven't had a chance obviously to study it,
- 11:49Speaker 1: but just eyeball very poised, had confidence in him. You know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: he was a clear communicating in the huddle. His helmet
- 11:56Speaker 1: didn't work the very first series and so he had
- 11:58Speaker 1: to run back and forth kind of like he was
- 11:59Speaker 1: back in seventh Great, I would imagine, you know, and
- 12:01Speaker 1: it didn't affect him in any way. He was poised,
- 12:03Speaker 1: got back in the huddle and made good decisions, found
- 12:05Speaker 1: the backs when he needed to. We called a couple
- 12:07Speaker 1: of shots that weren't there, and he just checked it
- 12:09Speaker 1: down and so impressed with his first day running the football.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I think the longest run from scrimmage, if ever, calls
- 12:15Speaker 1: like five yards, and I know you gotta, you know,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you want, you want more than that out of your
- 12:19Speaker 1: running game. Obviously, that's that's a point of emphasis coming up. Yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know, and we're not gonna ask them to do
- 12:24Speaker 1: too much up front and the run game in these
- 12:26Speaker 1: preseason games. But it's still the plays we gotta be called,
- 12:29Speaker 1: we gotta be targeted correctly and help those backs out
- 12:32Speaker 1: a little bit. So it could have been better in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the run game, you know, And we looked improve that
- 12:36Speaker 1: next week against Washington. And now the weird stat of
- 12:39Speaker 1: the night, Kansas City is ten and oh all time
- 12:43Speaker 1: in preseason games against the Bengals. When the games count,
- 12:48Speaker 1: Cincinnati leads the series fifteen to fourteen. Now time for
- 12:53Speaker 1: postgame analysis with LAB. Let's start with the obvious positive
- 12:57Speaker 1: LAB and that was the Bengals first drive of the
- 13:01Speaker 1: Zach Taylor era. They marked seventy five yards and score
- 13:04Speaker 1: a touchdown. Andy Dalton very sharp on the drive, although
- 13:08Speaker 1: he did just miss a long touchdown pass to Josh Malone.
- 13:11Speaker 1: There was a little bit underthrown, but he bounced right back,
- 13:13Speaker 1: led the Bengals into the end zone and had the
- 13:15Speaker 1: pleasure of going back to the sideline and basically saying
- 13:18Speaker 1: to Zach Taylor, hey, is that good enough for you? Right?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Good start? Fourteen plays, seventy five yards. You know you're right.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Sometimes the toughest throw for the quarterback to make is
- 13:29Speaker 1: when the wide receivers wide open and you're just trying
- 13:31Speaker 1: to hit a layup, you know, and you missed the bunny,
- 13:33Speaker 1: you missed the chippy. So but he did come right back,
- 13:36Speaker 1: throws the ball out and Tape makes a great play
- 13:37Speaker 1: for him, gets him down to the one yard line,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and then they scored the touchdown, so that that definitely
- 13:42Speaker 1: was a positive. And it unfolded just like Zach Taylor
- 13:45Speaker 1: had said in the production meeting, and he wanted to
- 13:46Speaker 1: end to get the ball out of his hand quickly,
- 13:48Speaker 1: didn't want to put him at risk for injury. And
- 13:50Speaker 1: then at some point earned the drive, take a shot,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and it all unfolded exactly that win ends up fourteen
- 13:56Speaker 1: play touchdown drive. I thought another positive was Ryan Finley
- 13:59Speaker 1: thirteen sixteen, you know, well over one hundred yards and
- 14:02Speaker 1: had a touchdown pass and I thought that, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think he's getting more and more familiar, you know,
- 14:07Speaker 1: with the offense. The Kansas Chiefs weren't doing anything real exotic.
- 14:11Speaker 1: You know, he got a chance to watch it in
- 14:12Speaker 1: the first half, and you know, he said they didn't
- 14:14Speaker 1: do anything differently when he got in the football game,
- 14:16Speaker 1: so he was he was kind of ready to perform.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I thought he performed pretty well. The biggest negative giveaways
- 14:23Speaker 1: the Bengals had four turnovers in the game, two interceptions,
- 14:27Speaker 1: including one on a hail mary, so you almost don't
- 14:30Speaker 1: count that. But they had two opportunities to get the
- 14:33Speaker 1: ball after stopping Kansas City, which is hard to do.
- 14:37Speaker 1: And when you forced the Chiefs to punt, you better
- 14:40Speaker 1: be able to field the punt. Absolutely put it on
- 14:42Speaker 1: the ground three times, lost two of them. And then
- 14:45Speaker 1: you know, had the two interceptions, one of hail mary,
- 14:47Speaker 1: like you said, but they scored fourteen points off of those,
- 14:51Speaker 1: you know, giveaways that the Bengals had. The Bengals got
- 14:53Speaker 1: no points off the one takeaway, but Hardy Nickerson had
- 14:56Speaker 1: he had the interception in the red zone. So turnovers
- 14:59Speaker 1: played a big part in the game. Um not only
- 15:01Speaker 1: turning it over but leading to points that you know,
- 15:04Speaker 1: fourteen of the twenty one points you lose by or
- 15:07Speaker 1: something that could have been avoided. So you know, you
- 15:09Speaker 1: look at that, you look at double digit penalties for
- 15:12Speaker 1: well over one hundred yards. I mean, you know, even
- 15:14Speaker 1: in the first drive they had to overcome a first
- 15:16Speaker 1: and twenty you know, and they did so, so you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: those kind of things that self destructure will interrupt momentum
- 15:21Speaker 1: and you know, get you just out of your rhythm
- 15:23Speaker 1: of play calling and execution. So that that's that's all
- 15:26Speaker 1: going to get cleaned up. You know, the Bengals defense
- 15:29Speaker 1: had penalties, They missed a bunch of tackles. There's no
- 15:33Speaker 1: way that they didn't have double digit mis tackles. So
- 15:36Speaker 1: you know a lot of times they were in position
- 15:38Speaker 1: to make plays and they'd make the initial hit, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know, instead of taking the ground to just be
- 15:42Speaker 1: dragging and getting dragged for you know, for extra yarded
- 15:46Speaker 1: So U that has to change and I think it will.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Last year, in the Bengals lost in the regular season
- 15:51Speaker 1: here at Kansas City, those miss tackles were a huge
- 15:54Speaker 1: problem in that game. They had eighteen according to Pro
- 15:57Speaker 1: Football Focus, the most that they have ever measured in
- 16:00Speaker 1: a regular season game. How much is that is? How
- 16:04Speaker 1: much of that is Kansas City's speed. I think it's
- 16:06Speaker 1: a factor, you know. I think that you know, you
- 16:09Speaker 1: get in practice and you're playing at as fast at
- 16:11Speaker 1: Temple as you can in practice. But then there's game speed,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and then there's warp speed because these guys run. You know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: there's a bunch of them that run sub four fours,
- 16:20Speaker 1: I mean half a dozen guys. It is. It's like
- 16:22Speaker 1: an Olympic relay team instead of a batonic's of football
- 16:25Speaker 1: that they're playing with out there. And these guys can
- 16:27Speaker 1: flat scoot. So if you take a poor angle or
- 16:30Speaker 1: you know you're you're half a gap out of position,
- 16:32Speaker 1: they can make you look bad in a hurry and
- 16:34Speaker 1: they square those shoulder pads up and head to the
- 16:36Speaker 1: end zone. It's like wow, I mean that's some acceleration there.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So I think when you make mistakes against the Chiefs,
- 16:43Speaker 1: you know you don't get away with them. You know
- 16:45Speaker 1: they hit you right in the face, and the mistakes
- 16:47Speaker 1: compounded because of that speed, a little mistake becomes a massive,
- 16:51Speaker 1: you know, big play mistake. Forty five years ago, a
- 16:54Speaker 1: young twenty two year old Dave Lappa made his NFL
- 16:57Speaker 1: preseason debut. I know how special that is for you
- 17:00Speaker 1: against the two time defending Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins
- 17:03Speaker 1: at the time. Well, a bunch of Bengals obviously made
- 17:06Speaker 1: their debuts tonight. Trevion Williams scored a touchdown in his
- 17:10Speaker 1: first game. Jordan Ellis scored a touchdown in his first game.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Stanley Morgan had several catches. I believe he finished with three.
- 17:18Speaker 1: That's a night they'll never forget, no question, it is
- 17:21Speaker 1: a night they'll never forget. And I guess the final
- 17:24Speaker 1: thing that we have to worry about is injury, you know.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I mean Clayton Federlum felt a little bit of a pop,
- 17:30Speaker 1: you know, and a little bit of a numbness, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: it's like, oh man, how bad is this ankle sprain?
- 17:34Speaker 1: And I don't think he'll make the dance on a
- 17:36Speaker 1: short week, you know against the Redskins, and Travon Williams
- 17:41Speaker 1: had you know, he's got to hit a bruise rib.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So there's some some bumps and bruises that guys are
- 17:48Speaker 1: gonna have to lick their wounds to get over pretty
- 17:50Speaker 1: early because this is the short week that they've got
- 17:53Speaker 1: in training camp and every week after this is at
- 17:56Speaker 1: least a full week, and then obviously that fourth preseason
- 17:59Speaker 1: game and of the the ragulsas they have extra days with
- 18:01Speaker 1: that Thursday game. So get through this one, lick their wounds,
- 18:04Speaker 1: get ready to play, and go to Washington and unfolded
- 18:07Speaker 1: a little bit better. Up next the Thursday night game
- 18:11Speaker 1: in our nation's capital against the Redskins. Kickoff is at
- 18:15Speaker 1: seven thirty. Now time for this week's fun facts interview
- 18:18Speaker 1: is we get to know the person under the pads.
- 18:21Speaker 1: In this case, it's an interview out of the archives.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Shortly after the Bengals made a cornerback out of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: University of Alabama the seventeenth overall pick in the two
- 18:33Speaker 1: and twelve NFL Draft, time for some fantastic fun facts
- 18:37Speaker 1: with rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick. You are from Gadsden, Alabama,
- 18:41Speaker 1: which has the motto City of Champions. What does a
- 18:45Speaker 1: young man do for fun in Gadsden, Alabama? Just hang
- 18:47Speaker 1: out my friends. You know, sometime we'll go dirt bike ride,
- 18:51Speaker 1: a lot of outdoor type activities and you know, I
- 18:54Speaker 1: just basically played my son most of the time when
- 18:56Speaker 1: I'm out. Yeah, you're obviously a star football player in
- 18:59Speaker 1: high school, but how about other sports? Did you do
- 19:01Speaker 1: other things as well? I played basketball a look to
- 19:03Speaker 1: my senior year, so I missed my should up and
- 19:05Speaker 1: had to have service, so, you know, it kind of
- 19:07Speaker 1: took away from the fun a little bit, but it
- 19:10Speaker 1: was all right though. All Right, we're doing fun facts
- 19:12Speaker 1: with Drake Kirkpatrick. You're and your dad both work on Sundays.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You're in the NFL, and he's a pastor. Did he
- 19:18Speaker 1: have a lot Have you do a lot of things
- 19:19Speaker 1: in the church when you were young? Yeah, I saw
- 19:21Speaker 1: in a choir, I did usher, I played at the
- 19:25Speaker 1: drums mostly though, you know, so I was very active
- 19:29Speaker 1: in the church, and that's one of the things that
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm grateful for. Are you a skilled drummer. I'm a
- 19:33Speaker 1: skilled drummer. Yes, I've been playing ever since I was
- 19:35Speaker 1: three years old. How about that? All right? Have you
- 19:38Speaker 1: had any other jobs aside from things that your dad
- 19:40Speaker 1: had you do in the church. Not really, you know.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I probably had some side jobs maybe you know younger,
- 19:46Speaker 1: but I never just actually had an active job. All right,
- 19:50Speaker 1: Dre there was a story about you where your dad
- 19:52Speaker 1: had this quote. Once the task has begun, be it
- 19:55Speaker 1: great or be it small, do it well, or do
- 19:58Speaker 1: it not at all. Yeah, it's that kind of the
- 20:02Speaker 1: way that he brought you up to do things to
- 20:05Speaker 1: the best of your ability. Yeah, that's the way I
- 20:07Speaker 1: am right now. And you know, there was someone the
- 20:10Speaker 1: reason that played a part of where I went to
- 20:12Speaker 1: school at and you know, because every time I did
- 20:15Speaker 1: something I had to I had I finished first off,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and I did it to the best ability, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: no slacking, no no days off, just going at one.
- 20:24Speaker 1: All right, you mentioned going to school, you went to Alabama,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and I've seen the footage of your announcement on the internet.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It's pretty hysterical because you pull out a gym bag.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Inside of that, there's a plastic bag. Inside of that,
- 20:37Speaker 1: there's a gift box. Inside of that, there's a gift bag,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and then the Alabama hat comes out. It looked like
- 20:43Speaker 1: he had a lot of fun with that ceremony. Yeah,
- 20:45Speaker 1: what we want to do. Wanted to make it fun
- 20:47Speaker 1: and just be over creative things. So you know, it
- 20:50Speaker 1: worked out great, you know, but I was happy that
- 20:53Speaker 1: I told us at Universe of Alabama. That was a
- 20:55Speaker 1: big deal. I mean that was on TV and everything,
- 20:57Speaker 1: your announcement of where you're going to college, and so
- 20:59Speaker 1: it was great, you know, just even to be in
- 21:02Speaker 1: that position that had an opportunity to even be able
- 21:05Speaker 1: to present yourself out to the world like that. So
- 21:07Speaker 1: it was just it was just an honor. We're doing
- 21:09Speaker 1: fun facts with Trey Kirkpatrick. He won two national championships
- 21:12Speaker 1: in three years at Alabama. Where are the rings? Uh?
- 21:15Speaker 1: My mom got him put them in a safe back
- 21:18Speaker 1: home so you know they can stay safe and you
- 21:20Speaker 1: know a lot of people be in and out the house,
- 21:22Speaker 1: so we don't want to know about the tip away
- 21:23Speaker 1: with him. He played for next Sabe and I find
- 21:26Speaker 1: it hard to believe the dude is in his sixties.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He seems so young to make. Yeah, you know, he's
- 21:31Speaker 1: very energetic, very focused and serious about what he'd do. Um,
- 21:35Speaker 1: always ready to come to work, and you know he's
- 21:37Speaker 1: just a great man, you know, and I look up
- 21:39Speaker 1: to him still to this day. Is there anything about
- 21:41Speaker 1: him that we would be surprised to now? Uh? He
- 21:44Speaker 1: has a personality. M he don't show it a lot,
- 21:46Speaker 1: you know, especially when he's at work and when he's
- 21:49Speaker 1: in his workplace, but outside of that. He's very fun
- 21:52Speaker 1: to be around. He cracked jokes in the meeting rooms
- 21:55Speaker 1: all the time, and you know, he always made it
- 21:57Speaker 1: fun for us. You know, he didn't put a lot
- 21:59Speaker 1: of stress on us. Draft read that your hero growing
- 22:02Speaker 1: up puts Dion Sanders. What was it about Dan that
- 22:04Speaker 1: you admired somebody? Uh? Just the way he presented itself.
- 22:07Speaker 1: You know, he didn't change the fact of him going
- 22:11Speaker 1: to the NFL make him a different person. He always
- 22:14Speaker 1: stayed the same person. And that's where I can tries
- 22:17Speaker 1: to be. You know, I don't I don't let money
- 22:19Speaker 1: of fame change me. I just want to be the
- 22:21Speaker 1: same more draping gass and m how many times if
- 22:24Speaker 1: you met Dion ever or the conversations like I'm in
- 22:26Speaker 1: at one time that was at the combine and um,
- 22:30Speaker 1: I mean well the draft actually, and you know he
- 22:33Speaker 1: was joking about me about what I had on and
- 22:35Speaker 1: you know, you know, it was just fun just to
- 22:38Speaker 1: be able to be around and see some of the
- 22:40Speaker 1: people that I grew up looking at and modify my game.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I fuck, So he admired the way that you drafted
- 22:46Speaker 1: to the NFL draft, Yeah, he did. I was pretty
- 22:48Speaker 1: stylished as I readycall who put together that? Luck? Uh?
- 22:51Speaker 1: I did you know? I'm very into dressing and style
- 22:55Speaker 1: type type things, so you know, me and some of
- 22:58Speaker 1: my friends just thought about some things. Yeah, all right,
- 23:01Speaker 1: it's the seventeenth overall picking the draft this year. Naturally,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you're you're well compensated. You get nice bonus when you're
- 23:06Speaker 1: drafted that high. What do you splurge on? Is it
- 23:08Speaker 1: closed or something else? First I had to do it.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I had to get my mom place to live. You know,
- 23:15Speaker 1: we've been standing in the same house basically twenty two years,
- 23:18Speaker 1: so you know, it was time for a chain. So
- 23:20Speaker 1: we had to get out of here. That's pretty exciting.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Guy who picked that out? That was it a surprise
- 23:25Speaker 1: or that they know it's coming. No, I let him
- 23:27Speaker 1: pick it. You know, I want her to be comfortable
- 23:29Speaker 1: and I want her to feel safe, so I didn't
- 23:32Speaker 1: want to surprise her with anything and she not be
- 23:34Speaker 1: one satisfied. So I feel like the best way it
- 23:38Speaker 1: was just to let her choose. All right, Now, you
- 23:39Speaker 1: had to get something for yourself as well. Did you
- 23:41Speaker 1: splurge on yourself at all? Not really, you know, I
- 23:45Speaker 1: really ain't no big splinder like that. You know, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 1: I'm just happy guy put me in Cincinnati because I
- 23:51Speaker 1: would have been anywhere else. You know, a lot of party,
- 23:53Speaker 1: a lot of supposed to a lot of different things.
- 23:55Speaker 1: So you know, here it just keep me ground, to
- 23:57Speaker 1: keep me focused on what I have a task. As
- 23:59Speaker 1: you mentioned, you have a dad, Drey Junior. How old
- 24:03Speaker 1: is he? And then tell me a little bit about
- 24:05Speaker 1: your boy. Uh he seeks h June first, he would
- 24:08Speaker 1: be seven. You know, he's just very fun to be around.
- 24:11Speaker 1: He look ups to me. I have to watch the
- 24:14Speaker 1: way I move certain words that I say, you know,
- 24:17Speaker 1: just actually just being a father, you know, stepping up
- 24:20Speaker 1: to the playbook costs. I had to still it to
- 24:22Speaker 1: the place so young. But you know, I feel like
- 24:24Speaker 1: I did a great job, and you did a great
- 24:26Speaker 1: job with fun facts. Thanks for the time, best a
- 24:28Speaker 1: lot of apprestated things. The Bengals final two open to
- 24:32Speaker 1: the public practices are coming up on Monday and Tuesday
- 24:36Speaker 1: from three to five at the practice fields adjacent to
- 24:39Speaker 1: Paul Brown Stadium. Hope to see you there. That's going
- 24:43Speaker 1: to do it for this week's podcast. If you haven't
- 24:45Speaker 1: done so already, don't forget to subscribe wherever you listen
