- 0:08On April 23, 1960, the Cleveland Indians faced
- 0:11the Kansas City Athletics in an afternoon game
- 0:14at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. The Indians
- 0:17were managed by Joe Gordon, who was in his third
- 0:19and final season with the team. Although the
- 0:22Indians had been a consistent 90 -win team and
- 0:24had reached the World Series in 1954, they had
- 0:27declined to nothing more than an average team
- 0:29by 1960. Kansas City was led by first -year manager
- 0:33Bob Elliott, who had taken over from Harry Kraft
- 0:35after his three -year tenure with the A's. The
- 0:38game featured two relatively unknown starting
- 0:40pitchers, Barry Lappman for the Indians and Dick
- 0:43Hall for the Athletics. This audio recording
- 0:46is from the radio broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:48Jack Buck and Carl Erskine. Pen, pen, bendable,

- 3:41of showing you how much we appreciate your support.
- 3:44Here we are in Kansas City, and the scene at
- 3:47home plate finds Joe Gordon, the manager of the
- 3:49Indians, with a big grin on his face, even though
- 3:51the Indians have yet to win a ball game this
- 3:53year. Bob Elliott, the manager of the Kansas
- 3:56City A's in his first year in that capacity,
- 3:58talking things over with the four umpires. Al
- 4:01Smith will be at the plate just walking out of
- 4:02your picture. Joe Paparella is at first base.
- 4:05Second base umpire is Ed Runge, and Johnny Rice
- 4:08is the third base umpire. It's a cool, windy,
- 4:11rather overcast day here as these two American
- 4:14League ball clubs battle. And two right -handers
- 4:16will be going at it. To tell you a little bit
- 4:18about them and who they are, here's Carl Erskine.
- 4:20Hi, thank you, Jack. Two right -handers are now
- 4:23warming up. Barry Lattmann, who came over from
- 4:25the White Sox just this year. And he's down there
- 4:28hoping to get off to a good start today because
- 4:30he had an eight and five year last year in a
- 4:33little over a hundred innings. And I know he's
- 4:35out there today wanting to get started and get
- 4:37this number one win under his belt. Dick Hall
- 4:40has already completed his pregame activities,
- 4:43Carl, and we've seen him before quite often.
- 4:47Dick Hall, you'll recall, was an outfielder,
- 4:49Jack, and they converted him to a pitcher, and
- 4:51he came up with some arm trouble with the pitcher
- 4:53bird and was sent out. The other boys got on
- 4:55the field, Jack, and tried to get underway. Right,
- 4:58and Dick Hall will be going to the mound, carrying
- 4:59with him a rather fantastic record from last
- 5:02year at Salt Lake City. The athletics wearing
- 5:05the white home uniforms. The wind blowing out
- 5:07towards left, as we told you, and we expect quite
- 5:09a few to be jumping out of this ballpark. Unless,
- 5:12of course, the pitchers have anything to say
- 5:14about it. We'll set the lineup for you. First
- 5:16in left field, there's Bob Sir. Alongside Bob
- 5:20in center field is Bill Tunnel. The fellow can
- 5:22really cover ground and get an idea of the distance
- 5:24at the same time, 421. Hank Bauer, one of the
- 5:27great names in baseball, is playing right field.
- 5:29The third baseman is a rookie, Bob Johnson. And
- 5:32another youngster is at the shortstop position.
- 5:34That's Ken Hamlin. He had quite a day yesterday
- 5:36with that club. Jerry Lumpy, a former Yankee
- 5:39at second base. And yet another former Yankee,
- 5:42Norm Siebern, at a strange position playing first
- 5:44base this afternoon. Back of the plate is a former
- 5:48national leaguer, Harry Cheney, who is with the
- 5:50Cubs. Number one catcher now for the A's. And
- 5:52on the mound, this big fella, 6 '6", Nick Hall.
- 5:56Last year his record was quite outstanding 18
- 5:58and 5. There is Jojo White coaching at third
- 6:01base for the Cleveland Indians and Red Cress
- 6:05is the first base coach talking things over with
- 6:07the umpire saying what do you have to do to win
- 6:09a game? The athletics have won one and lost two.
- 6:12They lost two games to Chicago. Both games they
- 6:15felt they could have won. They had some bad breaks
- 6:17they say. Meanwhile Cleveland is on three having
- 6:19lost the third game yesterday here to the Kansas
- 6:22City A's and the A's home opener four to one.
- 6:25Here's Johnny Temple. Dick Hall on the mound.
- 6:32The first pitch of the ball game is a ball. Temple's
- 6:34gotten off to a rather slow start. A scrappy
- 6:37little fellow who last year played second base
- 6:39for Cincinnati was involved in a trade with Cal
- 6:42McGlish. One ball to count. And a strike now.
- 6:46One and one. The outfield just about straight
- 6:48away for Temple. He hits the ball to all fields.
- 6:51He has only one out of 14. And there's nothing
- 6:56that a ballplayer likes any better than to get
- 6:58off to a good start and dislikes any more than
- 7:00to get off to a slow one. One and one to count.
- 7:05Low inside now. Two and one. You might seldom
- 7:08see a pitcher this size, Carl Erskine. He's a
- 7:11big tall boy out there. I'm sure he looks right
- 7:13down that hitter's throat up there. Strangely
- 7:16enough, as tall as he is, he's a low ball pitcher.
- 7:19If he keeps that ball low, you'll see a lot of
- 7:20ground balls today. He looks a little awkward
- 7:22but has a good fastball going for him. There's
- 7:24a shot in the right center. That looks like trouble
- 7:26and an extra base hit and this couple can run
- 7:27those bases. And he's going to try for two. He's
- 7:32in there. That's the way the ball game starts
- 7:34with a shot in the right center. A two base hit
- 7:35for Johnny Temple. Temple jammed into that bag
- 7:42quite hard down there as you can see. Number
- 7:44two is the shortstop. The second baseman is lumpy.
- 7:52Walter Bond the rookie right fielder made the
- 7:55play and made it rather close. Phil Cleveland
- 7:57has a good opportunity to get off and running
- 7:59here. The batting order finds Temple and Al Pearsall.
- 8:05Walter Bond hitting third. Tito Francona batting
- 8:08the number four spot. Russ Nixon the catcher.
- 8:10Big power at first. Woody held it short. Bubba
- 8:12Phillips at third. And Latman. Bauer on right
- 8:17field a while ago. With whom I referred. A ball
- 8:21the first off. First off getting an opportunity
- 8:24to play because Harvey Keane. Just acquired from
- 8:28Detroit is out of the lineup and will be for
- 8:29a couple of more days with a bad leg. Temple
- 8:32on a second base and there's nobody out. Temple
- 8:40is a very fine base runner. Aggressive ball player.
- 8:45He's able to get a good size lead off the second
- 8:47base. Now the time goes to one and one. All of
- 8:56the other teams are saying action today and we're
- 8:57going to keep you up -to -date on the progress
- 9:00of those games. Seeburn, Lumpy... Hamlin on the
- 9:04shortstop is just out of your picture. One ball,
- 9:07one strike. Two balls and a strike. His control
- 9:16record was fantastic last year. I was just checking
- 9:19on him before the game today and he... He only
- 9:21walked 28 men in the entire season last year,
- 9:24in which he won 18 and lost five. And this is
- 9:27a contrast to what he was the year before at
- 9:29Pittsburgh when he had arm trouble. Last year
- 9:31at Salt Lake City, it's a two ball, one strike
- 9:33count to Pearsaw. There's a base hit and a right.
- 9:36Temple's going to hold up at a third, I believe,
- 9:38as Bauer comes up with it. First and third and
- 9:41nobody out. What a throw Bauer made right through
- 9:44the play, but nobody out and Temple wasn't taking
- 9:45any... and two consecutive hits on the ball.
- 9:56Now here's Walter Bond, a rookie who's broken
- 9:59in in great fashion for the Indians. Another
- 10:04big fella, about 6 '5". First and third, Kansas
- 10:09City infield moves in, either for a play at the
- 10:12plate or for the double play. Outfield way around
- 10:15to the right, deep for Walter Bond. You know
- 10:20you can either as a pitcher be afraid of a big
- 10:22fellow or you can take the positive approach
- 10:24Jack and say boy what a strike zone this guy
- 10:26has. Usually they try to jam a fellow this size.
- 10:30Left handed hitter to a right handed pitcher
- 10:32left hand hitter often steps into the ball and
- 10:34in doing so it's advantage to the pitcher to
- 10:37pitch him tight. This temple on third base. The
- 10:40runner on first first all very fast nobody out
- 10:43there. Strikeout right now. Mary Cheney yelled
- 10:56something out to his pitcher. First and third.
- 11:00Nobody out. The ball game just started. We had
- 11:02a double and a single. One ball one strike to
- 11:08count. A real good fastball and a good cut. Getting
- 11:15his best shot that time. I have a feeling this
- 11:17fellow swings a little like Sam Jones we were
- 11:19talking about last week. He has almost as fast
- 11:22a backswing as he does across the plate. I saw
- 11:25Chidi move out of there on that foul tip. Walter
- 11:28Bond in the hole. There's Persol being held close
- 11:30which gives the left -handed batter a lot of
- 11:32room through the right side of the infield. Wow,
- 11:36a lot of play. This is what a ball club really
- 11:40enjoys when they have a fellow like Walter Bond
- 11:43come into camp. Just for a look see and find
- 11:47him to be so good that you can't cut him off
- 11:49the ball clock. They're playing in right field
- 11:52and batting him in the number three spot. Tito
- 11:55Francona will be next. Try to get the strike
- 11:58on the inside corner and ran the count to two
- 12:00and two now. Kansas City infield of Johnson,
- 12:05Hamlin, Lumpy and Seaborn. Looking for that double
- 12:10play ball. Good view as the umpire season. There
- 12:14is a base hit and a run is in and let's see if
- 12:17Pearsall tries for third. He stops as Bauer fires
- 12:19it back in. Three straight hits off of Dick Hall
- 12:23and Walter Bond drives in the first run of the
- 12:25game. One to nothing Cleveland. Temple across
- 12:30the plate. Pearsall. One of the fastest was compelled
- 12:35to stop at second base on the strength of the
- 12:37good throwing arm of Hank Bauer and now here's
- 12:40Tito Francona the left fielder. Francona has
- 12:45four out of 14 in this young season. And already
- 12:50they're throwing in the Kansas City bullpen which
- 12:52is. Way beyond the center field fence. First
- 12:56and second. Nobody out a run in. The Indians
- 13:01lead the A's one to nothing. Outfield deep to
- 13:04the right for Francona. Out of play into the
- 13:09seats. Jack we're just. mentioning earlier that
- 13:14Bob Hall was a low ball pitcher when he was at
- 13:16his best. And these three base hits in this first
- 13:19inning have all come on pitches above the hitter's
- 13:21belt. I'm sure that this is one of the reasons
- 13:24that these fellows have hung out three solid
- 13:27line drives during the first inning. They all
- 13:29have been well hit. Frank Conner had 20 home
- 13:31runs last year. That's a good strike. That's
- 13:35two of them. Tito has something to say to Al
- 13:38Smith. He played umpire. Pierce on his second
- 13:41base. Walter Bond on at first. Nobody out on
- 13:52a run in. The nothing to pitch. It's a ball.
- 13:57One and two now. He's hoping for that double
- 14:04play to change the inning. Get the momentum going
- 14:09in the other direction. You see Sebring playing
- 14:11behind the runner at first. One ball two strikes
- 14:15and going to hit it on the screen. Getting some
- 14:19good cuts at this guy This fell is around the
- 14:22plate all the time and the hitter walks in there,
- 14:23especially after two or three base hits Momentum
- 14:26starts rolling for a ball club and each guy walks
- 14:29up there swings a little harder than the last
- 14:30There's a good view of the power -hitting Frank
- 14:34Conner with 20 home runs and 79 RBI is last year
- 14:38for the Indians looking for his first homer this
- 14:39year one ball two strikes a little off the pitch
- 14:45breaking ball runs account to tune to This is
- 14:50the second stop in our big league baseball parade.
- 14:54Last week we were fortunate enough to be able
- 14:57to show you Sam Jones one hitter and I wonder
- 14:59what's going to happen today. The Indians have
- 15:01gotten off to the good start. Having scored one
- 15:03already. Two men on. Nobody out. There's ball
- 15:09three. Three and two with nobody out and Dick
- 15:13Hall is getting in a peck of trouble. Harry Chidi
- 15:16goes to the mound. A worried man right at this
- 15:28point. We'll keep an eye on the runners for him.
- 15:30Pierce Hall on his second and Bond on his first
- 15:32and see if they're breaking with this 3 -2 pitch.
- 15:35There's nobody out. They're not going. Base is
- 15:44loaded. Nobody out. Ron Conner gets to first
- 15:50base the easy way. He's on first. Walter Bond
- 15:55is on his second. Piersol is on a third and Bob
- 15:57Elliott. Here's Bob at second base. Piersol talking
- 16:03to JoJo White and going to the mound to talk
- 16:05to his pitcher is the Kansas City manager Bob
- 16:09Elliott. I was anxious to get a chance to see
- 16:13Bob again as I did before the game today. Bob
- 16:16is back in the big leagues after some time away
- 16:17managed out at the Coastal League last year and
- 16:20I'm sure he's got a few things on his mind out
- 16:23there on the hill right now. Bob Trowbridge is
- 16:25still throwing out the bullpen. I'm sure that
- 16:29Elliot is now motioning for Trowbridge. So here
- 16:33in the first inning, Bob Hall had a little shaky
- 16:35start. He didn't retire a man. He gave us three
- 16:39hits. A walk. One run. I know he's saying to
- 16:45himself, Jack, that his big legs are just like
- 16:49I left them. They're rough to cope with. That's
- 16:52right, Colin. And gee, it hurts. There's a fellow
- 16:54who labored hard in the minor leagues trying
- 16:55to get another shot. Piled a fine record. High
- 16:59classification ball, and then worked hard this
- 17:01spring. Looking for his first start of the season,
- 17:05and he gets it. He gets nobody out here in the
- 17:06first inning. The Indians having score to run.
- 17:10On a double, two singles and a walk. Have the
- 17:12bases loaded, and here comes a Kansas City pitcher,
- 17:14and that's right in style. Man, well, yeah, I
- 17:17never talk about the good old days when I played
- 17:19ball, but I'll say this. It was a long walk from
- 17:22the bullpen when I used to come in. And early
- 17:25in my career I can recall my knees shaking a
- 17:27little bit on that long walk to the mound. I
- 17:29wonder if he's got the radio on listening to
- 17:31a little soothing music as he comes in. Or maybe
- 17:34he's listening to another ball game. Base is
- 17:37loaded and nobody out and it's a tough situation
- 17:40to inherit. With the Russ Nixon due to be the
- 17:44Cleveland batter. Well they didn't break any
- 17:48speed limits with their car that's for sure.
- 17:50I wonder what the speed limit is in the ballpark.
- 17:53There's a good shot of the Kansas City Ground
- 17:55Crew's artistic ability. They've used the chalk
- 17:59lines to draw baseballs and letters KC and so
- 18:02on. Here comes Bob Trowbridge now into your picture.
- 18:07Bob, incidentally, is a nice mullinger. He came
- 18:12over here to Kansas City and he also is a sinker
- 18:16ball pitcher. I know he'll be trying to get this.
- 18:18Next year he hit the ball on the ground. Could
- 18:21have been a reason, Jack, that they brought Trowbridge
- 18:24in. Paul was having trouble getting the ball
- 18:26down. There was no chance for an infield play
- 18:29or a double play. This may have influenced his
- 18:32program and brought Trowbridge. Well they called
- 18:35him last very long and here's Bob Trowbridge
- 18:37who last year for the past few years was at Milwaukee.
- 18:43So this afternoon we're dealing with a lot of
- 18:44former national leaguers and... When we check
- 18:47the athletics periodically, we'll be referring
- 18:49to the fact that he's a former Yankee, and when
- 18:51we deal with the Indians and consider the trading
- 18:54activities of Frank Lane, why the past records
- 18:57of these ballplayers will all turn out to be
- 18:59very interesting, I'm sure. Even the ballplayers
- 19:04were buzzing about some of the most recent trades.
- 19:07Now, ordinarily ballplayers don't talk too much
- 19:09about it. They're not too concerned, but the
- 19:12trades had such impact this past week that the
- 19:14Cleveland players were talking about them. Well,
- 19:16there were surprising trades and some big names
- 19:18involved. This makes for an uneasy feeling, Jack,
- 19:22if you're a ball player and you wonder whether
- 19:25you should send your laundry out or not. This
- 19:27prank caught on at first. Walter Bond running
- 19:31at second base. Here's all on a third. There's
- 19:35nobody out. One run in and the better is the
- 19:39Cleveland catcher, Russ Nixon. infield back the
- 19:46outfield deep and around to the right Nixon wasn't
- 19:56wasting any time Nixon you remember as a father
- 19:58that was involved in that trade between the Indians
- 20:01and the Red Sox with Sammy White being the other
- 20:03player and then white quit the deal was canceled
- 20:06and Nixon came back to Cleveland up there with
- 20:08the base it loaded one and one Hank Bauer is
- 20:17very deep and right. Will Tuttle to shade it
- 20:20over into right center. There's quite a gap in
- 20:22left center between Tuttle and Sir. One run in
- 20:26and the Indians leading. Basin loaded, nobody
- 20:27out. One on one to count. There's a double play
- 20:33ball. play yesterday to start double play. He
- 20:54looks like a sure bet. They're like shortstop.
- 21:07Cleveland first baseman he's gotten up to a pretty
- 21:09good start first and third now with two out.
- 21:16Sounds like the fans would like to see him strike
- 21:18out and what a job it will be. outfield deep
- 21:23straight away and feel back with two out. There's
- 21:30Pierce all on a third base. Frank Connors on
- 21:33at first in the dirt and a nice block by Katie.
- 21:37You didn't want to throw but the other runner
- 21:44went down to second base. Frank Connors goes
- 21:49to second on the wild pitch. Here's all game
- 21:52halfway down the line and Cheney did a tremendous
- 21:54job on that wild pitching that he blocked the
- 21:56ball and kept it out in front of him which is
- 21:59the big item that a catcher must contend with.
- 22:03Keep it out in front of you and control the situation.
- 22:07The count runs to one and one. Power hits one
- 22:10to third. Big hop. Nice play. Here's Quentin
- 22:41Reynolds, world famous reporter and author. I
- 22:44really got news for you. I'm here to give you
- 22:47a report on the slickest shave I ever got in
- 22:49my life. It's all due to this wonderful new Gillette
- 22:52super blue blade. They tell me that this blade
- 22:55is a result of years and years of research and
- 22:58I can well believe it because with this blade
- 23:01you scarcely know you're shaving. As a matter
- 23:04of fact, easy does it. Your razor all but floats
- 23:08across your face with this new Gillette Super
- 23:11Blue Blade. It's especially made for men like
- 23:14me with tough beards or tender skin. But you
- 23:17men with average skin and beard can expect comfort
- 23:20like you've never had before. But you really
- 23:23have to try it yourself to appreciate what I
- 23:25mean. Yes, give the Super Blue Blade a try. You're
- 23:28in for a new shaving experience with the Gillette
- 23:30Adjustable Razor, $1 .95, or a dispenser of 10...
- 23:3369 cents. Here's the Kansas City batting order.
- 23:40Bill Tuttle leading off. Terry Lumpy in second.
- 23:44Hank Bauer third. Norm Seaborn fourth. And Bob
- 23:51Serb. Harry Chidi. The catcher. Bob Johnson.
- 23:56Ken Hamlin batting eighth. And then Trowbridge
- 23:59who has come out in place of Paul. Barry Lampen
- 24:01the pitcher. All the White Sox about to throw
- 24:04his first pitch for the Indians. Slow. Tuttle
- 24:13has three out of 14 and outstanding defensive
- 24:15ballplayer. Another one down there ball to. Cleveland
- 24:24leading one to nothing. Temple double to start
- 24:27the game. The third on a base hit. By Pearsall
- 24:33and came home in a base hit by Walter Bond. Two
- 24:36balls, no strikes to count. Popped up. Should
- 24:43be easy. It's foul. The catcher is there. Nixon.
- 24:46Now power chases him away and makes the catch.
- 24:49Nixon was calling for it, but it's always easier
- 24:51for the first baseman than you'd like to see
- 24:53him chase that catcher off. gets a chance. That's
- 24:55right. Most of the time the first baseman is
- 24:58a better shot because he's coming in on the ball
- 25:00and not going away. The ball isn't going away
- 25:02from him. He's coming in to meet it. Here's Jerry
- 25:05Lumpy Jack ready to take his legs. Jerry Lumpy
- 25:08the second baseman. One out and nobody out. Good
- 25:15one. Up behind the first hitter and now gets
- 25:18ahead of Lumpy. Indians came up with three hits
- 25:25in that first inning. What a job that Trowbridge
- 25:29did. Out of play. Strike two. Now somebody got
- 25:41a souvenir there, Jack. Easy way. He's lounging
- 25:44up there in the grass. He picked up that baseball.
- 25:49No balls, two strikes. Youngster has a tough
- 25:55time to ballpark today Jack Outrooting all the
- 25:58adults that after a foul ball and they ruin $100
- 26:02suits $30 hats trying to get a 275 baseball One
- 26:08ball two strikes one out. Nobody got a lumpy
- 26:15Russ Nixon is the Cleveland catcher the plate
- 26:21umpire is Al Smith Barry Latman involved in the
- 26:25trade for her score. Ready to fire the 2 -2.
- 26:32Full count now. There's Hank Power, who already
- 26:37has been taken to the hearts of these Kansas
- 26:39City fans. He'll be up there next. Bring him
- 26:45to the count. The athletics are a run down. That's
- 27:01a high pop line to short right. Here comes Walter
- 27:03Bond on the run. Look out, he held it. Bond caught
- 27:07the ball. No, it was Power. Power caught the
- 27:10ball and Big Bond hit him from behind and he
- 27:12still held the ball. Duffel couldn't get in on
- 27:15the play. The ball was fair when it was caught.
- 27:28Power. Power taking a little time coming back
- 27:31to his position there at first base as Hank Bauer
- 27:33steps in. Banks are going to call time to see
- 27:36if power is shaking up at all. It's taking it
- 27:39very, very easy coming in. Looked as though he
- 27:42got stepped on in that shuffle down there. About
- 27:45three of them are trying to stand on the same
- 27:46spot under that ball. OK, he's all right. Back
- 27:50at his position and there are two out. One to
- 28:04nothing. The Indians lead the A's. Changed up
- 28:08on him and he fouled it on the screen. Evens
- 28:10a count one and one. I asked Hank around the
- 28:13batting gauge before the game if he made the
- 28:15deal to come to Kansas City or George Weiss.
- 28:18This is Hank's home and I know he's happy about
- 28:20being here. As much as he didn't miss out on
- 28:26the World Series money last year. Foul again.
- 28:30These A's have a rather formidable ball club.
- 28:35A couple of youngsters in the infield. There's
- 28:37Norm Seaborn waiting to hit next. One ball, two
- 28:46strikes to count. Barry Lattman breezing through
- 28:49this first inning. and down they go in order.
- 29:10Three up and three away in the first inning for
- 29:13the Kansas City Athletics. And so at the end
- 29:17of the first inning the score is Cleveland one
- 29:19and Kansas City nothing. Second inning of the
- 29:56ballgame. Kansas City Municipal Stadium, Harry
- 29:59Cheney the catcher. Bob Trowbridge on the mound.
- 30:05Mr. Woody Held gets ready to step in and start
- 30:08the second frame. See Al Smith, the plate umpire,
- 30:13uses that inflated chest protector. Woody Held,
- 30:17the shortstop, the batter. Very few of the umpires
- 30:20use the inflated job. Bob Trowbridge, first one
- 30:26here. It's a ball. I think you're finding the
- 30:30American like Jack they use this outside protector
- 30:32the most. Jocko Collins is the only guy I know
- 30:34in the national league that uses it. What he
- 30:39held takes another one low. He held at 29 home
- 30:44runs last year. Has none so far this year. Two
- 30:48hits out of 11 trips. Nobody on or out in the
- 30:55second inning. to get a breaking ball over on
- 31:01his behind and then the count to three and oh
- 31:03now. Nick Hall started got nobody out. Three
- 31:12and one. That's about the only time you see this
- 31:18foul throw went straight Jack is when he's he
- 31:21knows that the hitter is hitting. Red Cress is
- 31:29the first base coach for the Cleveland Club.
- 31:33And Joe Joe White on the other side of the diamond.
- 31:37Three and to the count. High and easy in the
- 31:41center field. Bill Tuttle going back. It's well
- 31:43hit. Not much more room. He's out. You can tell
- 31:48by watching Tuttle that he had the ball all the
- 31:50way but he couldn't have gone much further. The
- 31:53wind seems to be above the stands blowing very
- 31:56hard. Here's the third baseman, a former Chicago
- 32:12player, Bubba Phillips. On the screen and out
- 32:17of play. The power hitting of what he held Tito
- 32:26Francona, and they hope Walter Bond is one of
- 32:33the reasons why they were able to trade Colabito.
- 32:36They figured they had enough power. They're anxious
- 32:39to get a fellow like Harvey Keene, but unfortunately
- 32:41Keene is riding the bench with a bad leg. There's
- 32:44that base hit. Into left center. Let's see if
- 32:47he tries for two. Tuttle is up with it. No play.
- 32:53A base hit for Bubba Phillips. That's the fourth
- 32:56hit of the day for the Cleveland Club. Down there
- 32:58talking things over with Norm Seaburn. And the
- 33:03Cleveland pitcher will be the batter. One to
- 33:08nothing, Cleveland is leading this quarter run
- 33:10in the first. And in case you joined us late,
- 33:12Temple doubled. First all single him to third.
- 33:15Walter Byam drove in the run with a base hit.
- 33:17Then a walk to Frank Connott. And the starting
- 33:20pitcher, Dick Hall, was out of there. This is
- 33:25Lattman. He's going to bunt. Misses. No play
- 33:29at first. Cheney came up ready to throw, but
- 33:32Sebring was charging in. We were talking to Bob
- 33:34Elliott before about Sebring playing first base.
- 33:36It's a strange position for him. He's an outfielder.
- 33:38He played for a couple of weeks in spring training
- 33:40and played his first game at first base yesterday.
- 33:43And these are the situations of which he is unsure
- 33:46when to charge in, when to hold the runner close
- 33:49and so forth. There's a bunt that's fair if Cheney
- 33:52picks it up and whoa, he's out. It appeared that
- 33:58Chidi in order not to hit the runner tried to
- 34:00lob the ball and not throw it with a good stuff
- 34:03on it to first base. This is a sure way to throw
- 34:05a ball away. Lumpy was the man who covered. Phillips
- 34:10goes down into scoring position when coming out
- 34:12of the top of the batting order. And here's the
- 34:15guy that started it all in the first inning Johnny
- 34:17Temple. Doubled in the first and has scored the
- 34:20only run of the game. With two men out. Bob Trowbridge
- 34:27is the pitcher. In the dirt. You can see the
- 34:36difference. Trowbridge keeping the ball down.
- 34:40As compared to Dick Hall the starting pitcher.
- 34:44That's Phillips. Right. This club has about five
- 34:46or six sinker ball pitchers. Strike gets the
- 34:51ball. One and one. I was talking to Harry Chidi
- 34:53indeed. He's got you before the game. He said
- 34:56a sinker ball pitch is very effective in this
- 34:58park because everybody goes up there pumping
- 35:00for that short lead field. Three thirty down
- 35:02the line. A rather easy park to hit home run.
- 35:06Sinker ball artists cause them to beat the ball
- 35:08in the ground when they're swinging from the
- 35:09heel. So one ball one strike count. Used to go
- 35:18into st. Louis Jack when Jerry Staley was pitching
- 35:21and I think they I think they went down that
- 35:23infield pretty good in front of the plate One
- 35:50ball, two strikes, and it's two and two. Johnny
- 35:54was lamenting the fact that it's rough to be
- 35:57traded to the other league. It's one thing to
- 35:58be traded within the league, but when you go
- 36:00to the other league, you lose all the knowledge
- 36:02of the pitches that you've gained if you're a
- 36:03student of the game as Temple is. He uses the
- 36:07reverse of most fellas. Big hitters for power
- 36:09use light bats. Johnny, who swings not too hard,
- 36:12uses a very heavy bat, somewhere near 40 ounces
- 36:15on occasions. Just pecks that ball. There's one
- 36:19to the second baseman. Lumpy charges it, gets
- 36:21the big hop. Temple is thrown out by Lumpy to
- 36:27Seaburn. No runs, one hit. No errors, and one
- 36:29man left on base. And so at the end of an inning
- 36:32and a half, the score is Cleveland 1, Kansas
- 36:35City nothing. I've had my eye on you all night.
- 36:48I kinda dig you too But I don't dig the shaves
- 36:53you get Get hip to something new Just twist that
- 36:59dial and you're all set With the adjustable razor

- 37:16achievement This super blue blade. Here's a blade
- 37:19that in any Gillette razor glides across your
- 37:22face so smoothly and so comfortably, you can
- 37:24hardly believe it. Ten for 69 cents or get a
- 37:27supply with a Gillette adjustable razor. Only
- 37:29a dollar ninety -five. Seaborn has gotten off
- 37:53to a terrific start hitting 400 with four out
- 37:56of ten two homers. He undertook a conditioning
- 38:00program during the off season and has paid off.
- 38:03He's at a real hot spring. Outfield deep and
- 38:06around on the right. Ball two. Nixon started
- 38:11to chase it. New one goes to the mouth. I think
- 38:16players Jack realized more than ever that there's
- 38:18really no off season anymore. That's man should
- 38:21stay in shape the year round. All three three
- 38:28and all. Bob serve will hit next. You'll be followed
- 38:31by Harry Chidi. He's got quite a bit of power.
- 38:36Bauer Seaborn serve and Chidi all capable of.
- 38:40Hitting the ball out with regularity. That means
- 38:44three nothing. in blue Jack. Never been wrong
- 38:55yet. Three balls and a strike. About that one
- 39:05ball. Well there's the first baserunner. Seaburn
- 39:11is wearing those big. Airplane. Bob Serb. He
- 39:35belted one here yesterday. They say if you get
- 39:38the ball up and serves eyes while you're headed
- 39:40for trouble because he has a lot of power in
- 39:42that high pitch. First baseman power is holding
- 39:47Seaman close. One and one. Here's a fellow Jack
- 39:52I don't believe I've seen a ballplayer this year.
- 39:55any other year for that matter. It's in any better
- 39:57shape than serve. This fella is hard as nails.
- 40:00Watch him swing that bat. He has three out of
- 40:05eight so far, for the season. See him in a short
- 40:10lead. Two balls and a strike. Served last year
- 40:19had 20 home runs. 87 RBI's. Lattmann slowing
- 40:25down a little bit. Two balls and a strike. Hit
- 40:37it off the end of the bat and it looks like it's
- 40:39going to drop. It does. See when it stops at
- 40:42second. Hit that one right off the end of the
- 40:45bat. When the fellow like serve swings the bat.
- 40:49and connects the outfielders instinctively start
- 40:52to break back when he takes a full swing like
- 40:53he did there. When it's off the end of the bat
- 40:56they oftentimes miss that step coming in on the
- 40:58ball. You know this serve is kind of a hitter.
- 41:08You hear fellas say Jack that he's a wrist hitter
- 41:11like Ernie Banks or Hank Aaron. This guy is a
- 41:15muscle hitter. He hits with his muscles. We had
- 41:19a close up look at Seabourn. And serve and now
- 41:23here's the catcher Harry Chidi who has four out
- 41:25of twelve so far. Indian infield looking for
- 41:29the double play ball. Ball one. Boy that ball
- 41:35was just in the weathering of that catching glove.
- 41:46That man's a pretty big fellow at six three ways
- 41:49to ten. One eight and lost five for the White
- 41:52Sox last year. One ball no strikes to count.
- 41:55There's nobody out here. That man thought he
- 42:02had a strike on that one. Cleveland is leading
- 42:07one to nothing scored around the first. And they
- 42:11were blanked in the second days after going down
- 42:13in order in the first inning. Started with a
- 42:15walk to Siebert. And a base hit by Bob Serve.
- 42:22And it's two balls and no strikes to Harry Chidi.
- 42:27Foul on the screen. Not much room to chase the
- 42:32foul balls here. Grandstand rather close to the
- 42:36playing field. Two balls and a strike. Three
- 42:52and one. GD was out and now he gets back in.
- 43:09Nobody out here on the bottom of the second as
- 43:11the A's threaten to get back in the ballgame
- 43:13trailing one to nothing. Gillette bringing in
- 43:15the ballgame from Kansas City. Jack Buck here
- 43:18along with Carl Erskine. 3 and 1. Popped up foul
- 43:26and out of play. 3 and 2 now. Can't give up on
- 43:34those pop flies too soon Jack because of the
- 43:36wind blowing above the stands. Sometimes carries
- 43:39that ball back in. Nixon kept a good eye on it
- 43:41all the way. There's Don Hefner coaching it.
- 43:43third base for these athletics. Oh Walker Cooper
- 43:46at first. Three and two the count. I wonder if
- 43:51the runners will be moving with nobody out to
- 43:53try to avoid the double play. A lot of factors
- 43:57enter into the decision which has to be made
- 43:59by Bob Elliott. He's a trailing one to nothing
- 44:02here early in the game. To consider who's running
- 44:10who's coming up next. He strikes out very often.
- 44:14The speed of the base runners. A lot of factors.
- 44:18Nobody out. Runners on it first and second. Three
- 44:20and two the count. They're not going. That's
- 44:27hit foul. They really smashed that one. Chase
- 44:30them off the bench down there in the Cleveland
- 44:32bullpen. Still three and two. See these bullpens
- 44:42in the spring. They have about 15, 20 players
- 44:44down there it seems like. Comes cut down date.
- 44:48They really fit them out. Chudy had five home
- 44:51runs last year for the A's. To give you an idea
- 44:54of the power. There's a Micah throw. A couple
- 45:17of singles in the ballgame tied. Serve stopped
- 45:20at second. Left fielder Frank Connick could make
- 45:23no play. Sebring scored. It's tied one to one
- 45:28and here's Bob Johnson. Bob Johnson the third
- 45:36baseman. Nobody out. Ball game tied. Latman seems
- 45:49to be having trouble with his curve ball. He's
- 45:51hung the ball up in the, up around the shoulders,
- 45:54up around the eyes two or three times. Got in
- 45:58trouble pitching to Seaburn by throwing two curve
- 46:02balls for the boss. Pitch from Latman and it
- 46:13is a strike. First and second here nobody out.
- 46:26Last of the second score tied one to one. With
- 46:32Cheney getting the RBI. Bond had the run vetted
- 46:34in for Cleveland. Here's the play to first. Made
- 46:40it pretty close. Big power playing behind the
- 46:53runner and trying to sneak in there. Double play
- 46:58ball perhaps. Out there. First and third now.
- 47:08The ball wasn't sharply hit. Bubba Phillips started
- 47:13to play at third base. Bob Johnson reaches on
- 47:16the Bueller's choice. He was forced to second
- 47:19and serve went to third. And here's the shortstop
- 47:23of the athletics. Ken Hamlin. Formerly in the
- 47:28Pirate Organization last year played in Columbus
- 47:30Ohio. First and third with one out. Score tied.
- 47:38That's right. Well that Nixon really moves around
- 47:41behind that plate. Down the move all the time.
- 47:44We talked about Darrell Rice last week being
- 47:46a good shifting catcher and Nixon taking a page
- 47:49out of Darrell Rice's book. Ships on everything.
- 48:01At least the fly ball to drive in the tie breaking
- 48:03run. Foul on the screen. Trying to go into right
- 48:08field with it. Strike two. I'll bet Barry Linton
- 48:12hasn't set up for the strikeout which he'd like
- 48:14to get. The pitch is due to hit next. Sun trying
- 48:22to break through here in Kansas City. Windy overcast
- 48:27day. Third serve on the third base. Johnson on
- 48:30it first. is still throwing in the bullpen. Might
- 48:52have a play at the plate as the center fielder
- 48:56Pierce Hall is there. Serb tags up. Here he comes.
- 48:59There's the throw and he goes back. Went back
- 49:04to third base. The ball was not hit very deep
- 49:07at all. You could tell the way Serb came down
- 49:12the line watching the outfielder that he was
- 49:14not intent on trying to. So Hamlin couldn't get
- 49:30the fly ball and the runners are still on it
- 49:32first and third with two out now and left with
- 49:33just about out of the inning which started off
- 49:35in rough fashion for him with a walk and two
- 49:37singles. And now here is Trowbridge. I don't
- 49:42recall him being too formidable with that bat.
- 49:44He takes his swings up there. He's respectable
- 49:47for a pitcher. Strike one. And the last of the
- 49:53second is a score to run here and tied the game
- 49:56one to one. Nixon wasn't aware he'd missed the
- 50:32ball and hit in his glove squirted through and
- 50:34rolled behind him. And this is the break serve
- 50:38got it making it because Nixon didn't jump on
- 50:40that ball it got behind in a hurry. He wasn't
- 50:42sure it had. Count goes to one and one on Trowbridge
- 50:46with Johnson on its second down two out. That
- 50:49might be trouble. He got him. Would have been
- 50:54trouble but Trowbridge doesn't run very well.
- 50:56Jumple made the play and that's the end of the
- 50:58second inning for the Athletics. Dependable.
- 51:28Yeah. Yes, you can depend on a Papermate. Papermate
- 51:30is the pen that positively won't skip, even writes
- 51:33over butter. Papermate is the pen that's guaranteed,
- 51:37unconditionally guaranteed. If your Papermate
- 51:39doesn't perform, we'll replace it. And only Papermate
- 51:42gives you a choice of skip -free refills. Standard,
- 51:46famous piggyback with two points, two ink supplies,
- 51:49or the new Texas refill with a jumbo ink supply.
- 51:52Look for this display of dependable Papermate
- 51:54pens and refills at stores everywhere. The sun
- 52:13has broken through here at Kansas City, as you
- 52:15can see from the shadows on the field, as Bob
- 52:17Trowbridge came on and did a fine job in relief.
- 52:22Now has been staked to a one -run lead as the
- 52:25third inning. gets underway. Harry Chidi there
- 52:29and the Indians number two hitter in their lineup.
- 52:33Jimmy Pearsall. He single his first time up and
- 52:35was left down. They play straight away for him.
- 52:43Strong wind blowing out toward left. It's popped
- 52:50up. It's foul. Seabron chasing it. A play like
- 53:01that is put to the discretion of the official
- 53:04scorer as to whether or not the fielder should
- 53:06be charged with an error. In that case they said
- 53:09no. No play. That wasn't an easy chance. The
- 53:12ball was going away from him and he was running
- 53:15toward the stands. Seaman playing a strange position
- 53:19down there at first base as we've told you earlier.
- 53:21Normally an outfielder. The count is one strike
- 53:26to Jim Pearsall. play. The ball is two strikes.
- 53:41Nobody on her out here in the third inning with
- 53:43Kansas City leading two to one. The Indians looking
- 53:45for their first win of the year. Pretty ballpark
- 53:49here as you can tell. You look around following
- 53:52the progress of this contest. One ball two strikes.
- 53:59Jack Buck here along with Karl Erskine and Gillette
- 54:01bringing you the ball game from Kansas City.
- 54:13First all hits another foul. Well next week we'll
- 54:21be able to talk about the Dodgers and the Giants.
- 54:24It'll be good to see the Dodgers again. That's
- 54:27right. I'll see all my old buddies out there
- 54:29and it'll be a little difficult for me to take
- 54:31a neutral position up here in this booth, Jack.
- 54:34You'd better. Carl Oisken. One ball, two strikes,
- 54:40curve ball, two and two. This trouble shows a
- 54:43knuckler once in a while. Occasionally, usually
- 54:46when he's ahead of the batter. My old friends
- 54:50in Brooklyn says there comes Oisken from Ft.
- 54:52Wythe. Two and to the count and first saw hits
- 54:56one down the line. There's trouble. Nice play
- 54:59by sir. Awesome to a single. Here's all gets
- 55:04his second hit. I imagine Mr. Keane is mentioning
- 55:09a bit on the bench. I wonder if he will get back
- 55:12in the lineup with that leg heel. That was hit
- 55:17number five. For Cleveland. Here's Walter Bond.
- 55:22He drove in there running the first inning. You
- 55:26know, people wonder why they have six weeks of
- 55:28spring training, spend a lot of money, and take
- 55:30these fellows down in the warm sunshine. But
- 55:32there's a good example of Harvey Keene, who I
- 55:37think reported late this year and then came up
- 55:40with an injury. First pitch was a strike to Bond.
- 55:48I'll be aware out of the right deep, they have
- 55:49to keep their eye on Prisock. We're gonna run
- 55:52those bases. Foul. This fella swings from the
- 55:57hill. Makes it strike two. How would you throw
- 56:02him now, Tom? Well, uh, maybe he should throw
- 56:08this one under the plate. With two strikes. Those
- 56:11managers jump up and down on that bench when
- 56:14they hit a two -strike pitch. They really scream.
- 56:17It's no balls, two strikes. Sebring holding the
- 56:20runner close. A lot of room for the right side
- 56:22for the left -handed batter. Nobody out here.
- 56:26Wasted that one. The A's leading the Indians
- 56:302 -1 at the end of 2. The base hit you just witnessed
- 56:39off the bat of Pearsaw was hit number 1 ,000
- 56:41for Jim in his big league career. Bond pops it
- 56:46foul and it's going to be near the stands. Johnson
- 56:49chasing it, the wind moving it, and he baffled
- 56:51but couldn't get it. Went a long way after the
- 56:55ball and started off like it was going to be
- 56:56way out of play. And then the wind, which Carl
- 56:58pointed out to you earlier, the fact that you
- 57:00can't give up on a ball. Then he brought the
- 57:03ball back in, but Johnson couldn't catch up to
- 57:06it. It's still one and two to Walter Bond. Something
- 57:12exists here now that you can see very well in
- 57:14your picture. A shadow at the plate and the bright
- 57:17sunshine at the mound. This is a makes it difficult
- 57:20at the plate to see and as the game progresses
- 57:22I think this shadow will eventually move on out
- 57:25past the mound one ball two strikes He's in here
- 57:29looking for the double play the outfielders are
- 57:31all deep First all started with a single he's
- 57:35not first nobody out Well hit You can tell why
- 57:42the Indians like this guy Walter bond is big
- 57:45about six five well over 200 pounds He really
- 57:50swings that toothpick. Looks like a toothpick
- 57:53in his hands up there. He spreads out the plate
- 57:59almost as wide as the box is marked off. Trubridge
- 58:06calls time once to get together with Cheney.
- 58:19Oh, by the way, this guy's a pretty good hitter.
- 58:22Better cover what you throw. Everyone wonders,
- 58:27what do they talk about on the mound? They don't
- 58:29always joke, but quite often it's a case of breaking
- 58:32a little tension out there, putting the pitcher's
- 58:34mind at ease, and occasionally they'll throw
- 58:37in a little gem of a suggestion of how you might
- 58:40get the hitter out. One ball, two strikes to
- 58:44count. Nobody out here. throw a bridge writes
- 58:57up his first strikeout first all still on a first
- 58:59base and here's the number four hitter in the
- 59:03Indian lineup left fielder Tito Francona he walked
- 59:13his first time up of the right deep for this
- 59:27fellow. He really blossomed into quite a hitter
- 59:31last year. Ball two and it doesn't pay to get
- 59:36behind these fellows. Pearsall singled and Bond
- 59:46struck out. That's what's happened so far here
- 59:48in the third inning. Kansas City leading Cleveland
- 59:52two to one although. Out hit five to two. Trying
- 59:57to throw a breaking ball. Two and all and runs
- 1:00:00it to three and all. Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:00:10And it wouldn't be too surprising when the runner
- 1:00:12on base, Pearsall, see Frank Kona chop down on
- 1:00:16this three -nothing pitch. Ball for him. Trowbridge
- 1:00:22gives up his first walk. Frank Conner goes to
- 1:00:27first. Red Crest is the coach. And here's the
- 1:00:33Cleveland catcher who hit into a double play
- 1:00:35in the first inning. Very solid second base.
- 1:00:45Russ Nixon is the batter. Pops it up. It's foul.
- 1:00:51Johnson chasing it near the stands. Looks like
- 1:00:53he's going to have a play. He's failed with men
- 1:01:00on base twice. So it's two on, two out. Here's
- 1:01:08the old Kansas City favorite coming up. Two on
- 1:01:32and two out. Tang run is on his second base for
- 1:01:35the Indians. Bob Trowbridge the pitcher. his
- 1:02:04first time up the third baseman threw him out.
- 1:02:08Everybody else saying action this afternoon.
- 1:02:11At the end of this inning we'll be able to give
- 1:02:13you all the scores of all the games. Couple of
- 1:02:19the ballgames are over. Not too big a crowd on
- 1:02:25this Saturday afternoon in Kansas City. He's
- 1:02:30played their home opener yesterday. Power hits
- 1:02:33another foul and out of play. Yes sir, next week
- 1:02:44on big league baseball, the Dodgers and the Giants.
- 1:02:48When those two get together, there's bound to
- 1:02:51be some action. That's low. Count runs to two
- 1:03:00and two on Power. Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 1:04:09when I think we all know. How are you fixed for
- 1:04:12blades? How are you fixed for blades? Please
- 1:04:18make sure you have enough. Cause a worn out blade
- 1:04:22makes shaving mighty tough. How are you fixed
- 1:04:25for blades? Gillette blue blades I mean. That's
- 1:04:32for me. Gillette blue blades and my new Gillette
- 1:04:35adjustable razor. There's a real swinging combination.
- 1:04:38And now Gillette has a super blue blade that
- 1:04:40gives you clean easy shaves never before possible.
- 1:04:43And it fits any Gillette razor you may have.
- 1:04:46A dispenser of 10 costs 69 cents. Let's see what
- 1:04:53the athletics do in the third inning here. They
- 1:04:56start with the top of the batting order. The
- 1:04:59center fielder, Bill Tuttle. Curve ball in there.
- 1:05:05He fouled out his first time. Phillips to power.
- 1:05:47One man gone here. Lappman breezed through the
- 1:05:50first inning and then got in trouble in the second.
- 1:05:52Started it with a walk and then two singles.
- 1:05:54Chibi drove in a run and then a pass ball allowed
- 1:05:56another run. Jerry Lumpy here popped to the first
- 1:06:01base for his first time. It's a foul near the
- 1:06:04stands and out of play. Phillips chasing over.
- 1:06:19One strike to count. Latman wants a new baseball.
- 1:06:25The Latman score trade. Seemed to bring about
- 1:06:29the opinion of everybody that was good for both
- 1:06:34ball clubs. Opinion still divided of course.
- 1:06:39On the Colavito Harvey Keene trade. One ball
- 1:06:43one strike to Jerry Lumpy. Bauer strikes out
- 1:08:55for the second time and he's been the only athletic
- 1:08:58victimized by Latvian. Bumper gets a new supply
- 1:09:02of baseballs. And here's a fellow that started
- 1:09:06the rally in the second inning by drawing a walk.
- 1:09:10First baseman, Norm Siebert. Two men gone. The
- 1:09:26turn is thrown out by Johnny Temple. Bumpy got
- 1:09:29a hit in the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors.
- 1:09:35One man left on base and so the score at the
- 1:09:37end of three innings is the Athletics two, the
- 1:09:39Indians one. It's time now for our stations to
- 1:09:42identify themselves. We pause for station identification.
- 1:09:49You're invited to Lawrence Welk's dancing party,
- 1:09:51an hour of lilting champagne music tonight. on
- 1:09:54the ABC television network. Okay, let's look
- 1:10:04at some scores of some of the other ballgames
- 1:10:06as this one goes into the fourth. Detroit won
- 1:10:08another, defeating Chicago 6 to 2. Larry the
- 1:10:11winner over Pierce. And Boston won out over Washington
- 1:10:148 to 3. Fornelli is against Passball. There's
- 1:10:17the other score. The Yankees leading Baltimore
- 1:10:183 to 2 in the seventh. In the national league,
- 1:10:21Cincinnati and Philadelphia are tied 2 and 2.
- 1:10:24in the ninth. First person Woody held is a strike.
- 1:10:30Pittsburgh leading Milwaukee five to four at
- 1:10:33the end of eight. And that Giants score, the
- 1:10:35Giants lead the Cubs seven, ten to two at the
- 1:10:38end of seven. Trowbridge. Next delivery is hit
- 1:10:43to the shortstop, Hamlin. One out. Held is thrown
- 1:10:47out by Ken Hamlin. What about that score? The
- 1:10:52Giants 17 and the Cubs 2 at the end of 7. And
- 1:10:57the Dodgers lead the Cardinals 5 to 4 at the
- 1:10:59end of 6. One man gone here in the fourth inning.
- 1:11:08Bubba Phillips single this first time. It's a
- 1:11:10foul. The Giants are flexing their muscles today
- 1:11:13over there. We said they had a lot of power in
- 1:11:16the middle of that lineup. The power up and down
- 1:11:19the lineup today 17 to 2. I know earlier Nicky
- 1:11:27and Nicky Pater had a home run and Bob Schmidt
- 1:11:29did one with two men on. Now the saying is if
- 1:11:32you're going to lose one lose one right. Chicago
- 1:11:35can say they're losing this one right today.
- 1:11:37It's not overdue. He's still got a hit in the
- 1:11:54second inning. That was his first hit of the
- 1:11:55year. He's one for 10 now. Trowbridge in addition
- 1:12:00to his good sinker ball throws a lot of sliders
- 1:12:02a lot of breaking ball and all three of those
- 1:12:03were breaking balls and look each one a little
- 1:12:06farther outside. Well here's the pitcher he sacrificed
- 1:12:11the first time up. Barry Lappman. Pops it up
- 1:12:16to second seconds. Having a little trouble now,
- 1:12:20calls for it. So, Trowbridge has a very eerie
- 1:12:28evening. Although, monthly staggered a bit under
- 1:12:30that pop fly. With the wind and the sun being
- 1:12:33what it is. Now, at the end of three and a half
- 1:12:36innings, the score is the A's two and the Indians
- 1:12:38one. Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the world's
- 1:12:46safest safety razor. A Gillette razor, of course.
- 1:12:48This particular model is the Gillette adjustable
- 1:12:50with nine separate settings to match any combination
- 1:12:53of skin and beard. Now, I'm setting this one
- 1:12:56at nine, which gives the greatest edge exposure.
- 1:12:58There are no exposed corners on the Gillette
- 1:13:00razor. Just watch this. Here's a fresh blade,
- 1:13:04sharp as sharp can be. Now, I'll put it in the
- 1:13:07razor. Watch. Right in the palm of my hand, and
- 1:13:14not a scratch. How about that? That's protection.
- 1:13:18No exposed corners. And that's true for any Gillette
- 1:13:21razor and any Gillette blade. The blade I use
- 1:13:24just now is the new Super Blue Blade. Believe
- 1:13:27me, this is a miracle blade. You just have to
- 1:13:29try it to know the wonderful, comfortable, clean
- 1:13:32shaves you get. Look for it. The new Gillette
- 1:13:34Super Blue Blade. First pitch to Bob Serb. One
- 1:13:40around. Serb leading off, single back in the
- 1:13:43second inning and scoring a run. The athletics
- 1:13:47left fielder. Four out of eight so far this season
- 1:13:52including this game. Nice play. Johnny Temple
- 1:13:59scooting to his right throws out Bob Sir. The
- 1:14:04Indians got a valuable piece of poverty when
- 1:14:06they got Johnny Temple. Of course they gave up
- 1:14:09one of their big winners. The Red Legs needed
- 1:14:13some pitches. Cal go surprise when he starts
- 1:14:17pitching in that small park in Cincinnati Strike
- 1:14:21the duty and they jump out of there pretty good
- 1:14:25First a homerun these days is to be found in
- 1:14:29any ballpark where these fellas can sock that
- 1:14:31ball One and one to Harry Chidi He's catcher.
- 1:14:37He's single and drove in the first athletic run
- 1:14:39in the second inning And another run scored on
- 1:14:42a pass ball Finds the ace on top. Two to one.
- 1:14:47Here with one out and nobody on in the fourth.
- 1:14:50Curve ball. One ball, two strikes. Now we have
- 1:14:56pretty good battle going between Trowbridge,
- 1:14:59who relieved Dick Hall, the Kansas City starter.
- 1:15:03A good battle between Trowbridge and Barry Letman.
- 1:15:19Phillips has to back up and play the long hop.
- 1:15:22Up and down and out. Oh, and up in the air, and
- 1:15:25then we have plenty of time with cheaty running,
- 1:15:27and that's two out. One thing about it, Carl,
- 1:15:32whenever you see an athlete in any sport, do
- 1:15:36something with an unnatural motion like Phillips,
- 1:15:39and then we have plenty of time. That's when
- 1:15:41they make the mistakes. Not only that, but that's
- 1:15:43when you get hurt. First pitch to Bob Johnson
- 1:15:47is a ball you need to hurt physically. Right,
- 1:15:49I think in football they will always stress this
- 1:15:52point with so much body contact to always do
- 1:15:55the natural thing and always do the thing to
- 1:15:58the fullest. Ball two to Johnson. Any maneuvers
- 1:16:03you shy away from or don't do all out, this is
- 1:16:06the time you get hurt. On basketball you're going
- 1:16:09for a layup when you're all by yourself, no opposition,
- 1:16:11you just do something different because you know
- 1:16:13that you don't have to bear down. And that's
- 1:16:16when you blow the shot. Two out of nobody on
- 1:16:19two balls, no strikes to count. Johnson hit that
- 1:16:22one right off the end of the bat. He can chalk
- 1:16:24up now. Reach on the field of choice in the second
- 1:16:26inning. He's the A's third baseman, a rookie,
- 1:16:28whom they drafted. Hey, old bird dog, Cooper,
- 1:16:32still bounce around down there in that coaching
- 1:16:33box. Well, we saw him in batting breakers. Walker,
- 1:16:36Cooper, dulled a couple out of this ballpark.
- 1:16:40That's ball three to Johnson. He's batting in
- 1:16:48the number seven spot. That's been working in
- 1:16:54a hurry, Watson. This Johnson, at whom we're
- 1:17:03looking right now, bears a remarkable resemblance
- 1:17:07to Rocky Colabido. In fact, they've already nicknamed
- 1:17:11him Rocky. Here's Ken Hamlin, the shortstop.
- 1:17:16Fly out to center field his first time up. Throw
- 1:17:19to first. Two to one, the A's lead here in the
- 1:17:27fourth inning. Right down the middle. One and
- 1:17:37one. Slamming and throw rather hard. I was talking
- 1:17:42to some of the thugs before the game today and
- 1:17:44asked him what basically his stuff was. They
- 1:17:46said just good hard fastball and a good hard
- 1:17:49curve. It's a pretty good combination. One and
- 1:17:52one to the batter, Hamlin. Curveball hit the
- 1:17:55third base. The play is going to be the second
- 1:17:57to Temple. Johnson is forced by Hamlin from Bubba
- 1:18:02Phillips to Johnny Temple. No runs, no hits,
- 1:18:05no errors, and one man left on base. And the
- 1:18:08score at the end of the fall betting the athletics
- 1:18:10two and Cleveland one. what we need. Johnny Temples
- 1:19:21the batter he doubled his first time up and scored
- 1:19:23a run that's the way the ballgame started. Then
- 1:19:25he ground it out back in the second inning. He
- 1:19:29has two for 16 which is not much like Johnny
- 1:19:31Temple. Tries to bunt and it goes foul. He'll
- 1:19:37do a little bit of everything. He'll do that
- 1:19:39with two out too. John's expecting a summer this
- 1:19:44year that he can maintain his weight and his
- 1:19:47strength because in that. hot ballpark in Cincinnati
- 1:19:50playing one hundred and fifty four and as the
- 1:19:52way this guy moves around he always lost weight
- 1:19:54during the season. So he's looking forward to
- 1:19:57those cool days in Cleveland this year when he
- 1:19:59can probably keep that weight up that at 311
- 1:20:04last year. Take strike to strike out very often.
- 1:20:12Nobody out here in the fifth inning. It's going
- 1:20:14to be a temple for us all and Walter Bond. We're
- 1:20:17around at the top of Cleveland batting order
- 1:20:18again. A real good eye up at the plate. Cleveland's
- 1:20:29quarter run in the first. The A's came back with
- 1:20:31two in the second. This is Bob Trowbridge who
- 1:20:34relieved Dick Hall in the first inning. We're
- 1:20:37waiting for Harry Chidi to fix the mask. He had
- 1:20:41it off. Made an adjustment. Now he's ready to
- 1:20:44go. One ball two strikes. number 37. He'll be
- 1:20:59up there next. Here's the 2 -2. Very close. 3
- 1:21:09-2. It's a lot of courage to take that pitch
- 1:21:14in a 2 -2 count. Yeah, Trowbridge out there has
- 1:21:17nibbled it outside of that plate three straight
- 1:21:19pitches down attempting to get Temple out of
- 1:21:21there with two strikes on him. And he's just
- 1:21:24missed. A shot in the left. Serve is on the go.
- 1:21:29It's going to be off the wall. Might have a play
- 1:21:31at second base. Temple is held to a single. A
- 1:21:33nice play by Bob Serr. Temple really caught that
- 1:21:38one right off the three thirty sign out in left
- 1:21:41field. When it became apparent to serve that
- 1:21:43he wasn't going to be able to get to the ball.
- 1:21:46He took a fine position and got a good rebound.
- 1:21:50They don't hold their runners to singles very
- 1:21:52often on a shot off that wall. Here's Pearsall.
- 1:21:57It's hit number six for Cleveland. Hit number
- 1:22:01two for Johnny Temple. He got it on a 3 -2 pitch.
- 1:22:08Pearsall punts. The play is going to be the first
- 1:22:10base. Now Pearsall was punting for the hit but
- 1:22:12he got it right back to the mound. Temple went
- 1:22:14to second. So it's a sacrifice. Throw bridge
- 1:22:21to Seaburn. Some of the boys will tell that he
- 1:22:28was protecting that average of his. Had a pretty
- 1:22:32good idea with this big fella coming up, Walter
- 1:22:34Bond. He's single and drove in a run back in
- 1:22:37the first inning, then he struck out in the third.
- 1:22:40Indian rookie right fielder. Tying run, temple
- 1:22:43on its second base. And one man out here in the
- 1:22:46fifth. wearing sunglasses now. The wind doesn't
- 1:23:03seem to be quite as strong as it was earlier
- 1:23:05blowing out toward center field. One and one
- 1:23:12to bind. Bob Trowbridge formerly of Milwaukee.
- 1:23:32Johnny Temple on its second base. A curveball
- 1:23:37hit into deep right. That ball is trouble and
- 1:23:40it's out of here. That ball really jumped. A
- 1:23:43curveball. And he hit it out. Scoring Temple
- 1:23:48ahead of him. That ties the score as Temple steps
- 1:23:51on the plate. And now Bond's run puts them ahead.
- 1:23:56A single and a homer. And the Indians are out
- 1:23:59in front by the score of 3 to 2. And now Tito
- 1:24:10Frank Conner wears walk twice. It's a bouncing
- 1:24:14ball to lumpy. Really hung a curve ball to bond
- 1:24:26didn't he Carl. That ball is up. Certainly was
- 1:24:29up and a little bit in on him and when he hit
- 1:24:31it it sure didn't sound from here that he hit
- 1:24:33it well enough to go over that fence. I'm sure
- 1:24:35he hit it well or it wouldn't have gone that
- 1:24:37far. I don't think he got a lot of help from
- 1:24:38the wind. indication this guy is not only big
- 1:24:41he really is strong I surprised myself when that
- 1:24:44ball jumped out because as you say Carl I didn't
- 1:24:47sound good when he hit it but it's gone now and
- 1:24:51the Indians lead three to two here in the fifth
- 1:24:53inning with two out this is Russ Nixon the catcher
- 1:24:58I might have been disappointed if we hadn't seen
- 1:25:00one home run here today the way the wind is blowing
- 1:25:03Trowbridge wouldn't have been disappointed Nixon
- 1:25:11hits one intellect. It's his first hit free trips
- 1:25:16Single of the opposite field off the bat of the
- 1:25:21Cleveland catcher The Indians, after scoring
- 1:26:01in the first inning and then losing their advantage,
- 1:26:03are again on top, 3 -2. Shebram watches it all
- 1:26:08the way, but there's no play. And it's strike
- 1:26:13two. Pitcher is due to lead off for the Athletics
- 1:26:20in the bottom of the... Good thing. No balls,
- 1:26:29two strikes. A high fly ball, the deep left.
- 1:26:32That ball is going to be trouble. And serve,
- 1:26:35can't get it. It's off the wall. Runs going to
- 1:26:37score. A double for power. Serve had a little
- 1:26:50more room out there in the outfield than he imagined.
- 1:26:54Leapfoot couldn't get to the ball. It's a double
- 1:26:55and an RBI on a nothing two pitch to Vic Power.
- 1:27:01Drives in the run. Nixon scored all the way from
- 1:27:04first base. Three runs in the inning making the
- 1:27:06score four to two. Power with a double goes to
- 1:27:09third on the throw to the plate. Here's the shortstop.
- 1:27:20Woody held with power on a third. Going to keep
- 1:27:24an eye on him. He's trying to steal Swalm. The
- 1:27:26play is out at home. on the top of the head as
- 1:28:07power was reaching with his hand. And the argument
- 1:28:09continues here. That ends the inning. Out trying
- 1:28:12to steal home. Three runs. On four hits. No errors
- 1:28:19and nobody left. And at the end of four and a
- 1:28:21half innings the score is Cleveland four. with
- 1:29:01a shaving cream shave. See? Gillette Foamy Instant
- 1:29:04Lather. Just a touch, and there's rich, creamy
- 1:29:06lather that drenches your beard, softens your
- 1:29:08whiskers. Shaving is fast and easy, and you get
- 1:29:10that clean, clean feeling only a shaving cream
- 1:29:13shave can give. Here's a foamy exclusive, K34,
- 1:29:16the antiseptic that kills harmful facial bacteria.
- 1:29:19Regular foamy, or foamy with menthol added, 79
- 1:29:22cents, or the giant economy size, 98 cents. Temple
- 1:29:32started with a single. Kersall sacrificed and
- 1:29:35Vaughn hit a home run to put Cleveland ahead
- 1:29:37by the score of three to two. Then after Francona
- 1:29:41grounded out, Nixon's single and Power doubled
- 1:29:43him home. Power went to third on the play at
- 1:29:45the plate. This is Whitey Herzog batting for
- 1:30:03Trowbridge. Last of the fifth getting underway.
- 1:30:13Barry Ladman on the mound for the Indians. He's
- 1:30:16started and going all the way. George Brunet
- 1:30:22is in the bullpen for the A's. There's a foul
- 1:30:25off the end of the bat for strike two. Whitey
- 1:30:29Herzog the batter here. in the on deck circle.
- 1:30:43They thought they had a strikeout, but they didn't
- 1:30:45get the call. It's one and two. Herzog last year
- 1:30:50batted 293. Just in a few games, however. In
- 1:30:56the dirt, two and two. Power came after Chidi
- 1:31:02as he attempted to steal home with those spikes
- 1:31:03flying, jumped right on top of him. Chidi didn't
- 1:31:06tag him, but Power didn't get to the plate, and
- 1:31:08then Power reached for the plate, and Chidi tagged
- 1:31:10him on top of the head. Quite an argument when
- 1:31:12the inning was over. There's ball three. Three
- 1:31:15and two to the leadoff man here. It appeared
- 1:31:17that Power, who was out by some 10 or 12 feet,
- 1:31:21saw that he was going to be out after attempting
- 1:31:23to steal, and he tried to knock the underpinning
- 1:31:25out from under Harry Chidi, and he only spun
- 1:31:27off of him. Then the argument came because of
- 1:31:31Chidi in an attempt to tag, his attempt to get
- 1:31:34back to the plate. The umpire called him out.
- 1:31:51So maybe the A's have something going on. Last
- 1:31:54to the fifth the Indians lead four to two. Frank
- 1:31:59Conner makes the catch on a flat ball hit by
- 1:32:02Tuttle. Why not. Frank Conner and Kersall were
- 1:32:08all after that one. Now, the number two hitter
- 1:32:13in the lineup, the second baseman, with one for
- 1:32:16two so far in the ball game, Jerry Lumpy. Lumpy
- 1:32:20popped out, then single in the third. Kersall
- 1:32:23got it first base. The A's two runs down, they
- 1:32:26figure he's not gonna be running until Power
- 1:32:28is playing behind him down there, thus protecting
- 1:32:31the hole against this left -handed hitter. That's
- 1:32:36through the hole the other way. down at second
- 1:33:37base and lumpy at first with one out. Bauer pops
- 1:33:40it up short left center. First all on the run.
- 1:33:43Look at him come. He's there and has it. Runners
- 1:33:46get back two out. First off and cover that ground
- 1:33:50in the outfield. Came a long way for that one
- 1:33:53playing deep for Bauer. Now that puts things
- 1:34:01squarely up to the number four hitter in the
- 1:34:02athletics lineup. He's out at first. And there
- 1:34:10is the first baseman, Norm Sebring. It's a foul.
- 1:34:20Sebring walked in the second and quarter run,
- 1:34:22then grounded out. The Indians are on top, 4
- 1:34:25-2, and we're in the bottom of the fifth, 2 on,
- 1:34:262 up. I've been taking a little time. He's in
- 1:34:41a bit of a jam here. This is the second time
- 1:34:45that Grant, when we showed you in the bullpen,
- 1:34:47has been warming up. One and one. Tom Seaborn,
- 1:34:56a St. Louis boy. Last year with the Yankees,
- 1:35:02he had 11 homers. 53 RBI is about at 271. A good
- 1:35:09fastball on the corner. Now Seaborn has to be
- 1:35:14cutting away up there. He's in the hole one and
- 1:35:16two. That man had plenty on that one. I think
- 1:35:22we spoke earlier Jack about pitching inside to
- 1:35:25some of these left handers and there was a good
- 1:35:26example. Striding in and taking the pitch but
- 1:35:29it just about the corner. One ball two strikes
- 1:35:33two on two out. This is a wild now. Two on, two
- 1:35:43out, two balls, two strikes. Four to two of the
- 1:35:47score. Get a bunch of human beings down there
- 1:37:07playing with a baseball and look out. One and
- 1:37:13one. Do bomb serve. Serve single. Score a run
- 1:37:16in the second and then ground it out. There's
- 1:37:18Seaborn. And there we have Lumpy. one ball two
- 1:37:36strikes only had seven in the hall and then he
- 1:37:38got him and then whoops you know that run of
- 1:37:43course will be an unearned run but uh or any
- 1:37:45other runs that score this inning will be unearned
- 1:37:48they're still just as big on the scoreboard indians
- 1:37:52lead by one At the end of the fifth inning is
- 1:38:09Cleveland 4, Kansas City 3. two Cincinnati and
- 1:39:11Philadelphia in the eighth. It's Pittsburgh five
- 1:39:15and Milwaukee four. Look at that San Francisco.
- 1:39:18Jack Sanford won that one eighteen runs. Two
- 1:39:21runs for Chicago. Drop was a loser. He'd like
- 1:39:24to spread those over the season I bet. Los Angeles
- 1:39:26and St. Louis. St. Louis is forced to hit now
- 1:39:29on the sixth inning eight to five. We're ready
- 1:39:31to go here in the top of the sixth inning. Kansas
- 1:39:37City. Brunette is on the mound, B -R -U -N -E
- 1:39:43-T, George Brunette. Those American League games
- 1:39:46are all over. I gave you those scores earlier,
- 1:39:47but in case you weren't with us, it was Detroit
- 1:39:506, the White Sox 2, Boston 8, Washington 3, the
- 1:39:55Yankees 3, Baltimore 2. So the Tigers are still
- 1:39:59undefeated. They're 4 -0. George Brunette is
- 1:40:02the third Kansas City pitcher. Started with Dick
- 1:40:09Hall. and then Bob Trowbridge in the first in
- 1:40:11the sixth that's Brunette and what he held will
- 1:40:13lead off. I hope you're enjoying the action in
- 1:40:24this one. We've had quite a bit of it at municipal
- 1:40:26stadium in Kansas City. Gillette sending you
- 1:40:29the game. It will be on hand each and every Saturday
- 1:40:32for you. Next Saturday the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 1:40:35and the San Francisco Giants from Los Angeles.
- 1:40:39Jack Buck. Karl Erskine here. We're enjoying
- 1:40:41the ballgame along with it. Chidi gets together
- 1:40:44with the pitcher on the signs. And turn the lights
- 1:40:49on here. An indication of the sort of day we're
- 1:40:53having. We had sunshine for just a couple of
- 1:40:55minutes or so and then only part of the field.
- 1:41:00What he held is 0 for 2. Not too good a start
- 1:41:06for the season. 2 out of 13. He underwent a couple
- 1:41:08of operations that really frightened him but
- 1:41:14strike. Thought for a while that Woody might
- 1:41:22have cancer. Fortunately it was not true. He
- 1:41:28held back. It's 1 and 1. 4 to 3 the score on
- 1:41:32this one. The Indians about hit the athletics
- 1:41:35nine to four. The Indians have made the only
- 1:41:37error. When you consider that run the scored
- 1:41:40on the air plus the run the scored on the pass
- 1:41:42ball the A's have scored some pretty cheap markers
- 1:41:44but they do count. He caught that one in the
- 1:41:46right field. Hank Bauer should make the catch.
- 1:41:53What he held applies to Hank Bauer. It's not
- 1:41:59the first five ball that Mr. Bauer has caught.
- 1:42:04He's not used to that much room out there however.
- 1:42:08No. First thing he sees in Yankee Stadium used
- 1:42:11to see people. Here's Bubba Phillips. One for
- 1:42:15two in this game a single and a strikeout. Remember
- 1:42:19the last time out there he went for three bad
- 1:42:22balls in the fan. Didn't go for this one. Got
- 1:42:26a single in the second inning. He's only hit
- 1:42:28for the season so far. He's one for ten. Ball
- 1:42:32two. He is bringing in the left hander here to
- 1:42:36see what they can do about stopping the power
- 1:42:38hitting of Bond, Frank Cota, and Nixon. One out,
- 1:42:44nobody out. Third baseman, Johnson. Save! He
- 1:42:55put everything he had on it, but he couldn't
- 1:42:57get Bubba Phillips. He gets his second hit of
- 1:42:59the ballgame. He had to wait for that high bouncing
- 1:43:05ball to come down. He knew he was going to have
- 1:43:07trouble, so he cranked up and fired as hard as
- 1:43:09he could and quickly as he could. Couldn't flag
- 1:43:12down Phillips. He's on a first with one out.
- 1:43:15And the pitcher is coming up. One man gone here.
- 1:43:24You can look for most anything in this situation.
- 1:43:26This is not simple. This is very Latin. It's
- 1:43:31not uncommon to see a pitcher bunt in this situation,
- 1:43:33Jack, because of a fellow like Temple coming
- 1:43:35out behind him, even though there's one out.
- 1:43:38Johnson's even with a bag at third base, protecting
- 1:43:41against the bunt. The base hit by Phillips was
- 1:43:44number 10 for the Indians. Popped it in the air,
- 1:43:52he grabs it, nobody covering. Phillips got back
- 1:43:57in time as Lumpy was unable to get over there.
- 1:44:00So Brunette wisely held the ball. Good wood on
- 1:44:07that one. Swung at that one he had a good marine
- 1:44:10line drive base hit. I'm sure he was trying to
- 1:44:14make that bunt good out in front of the plate.
- 1:44:16Made sure he bunted it fair and with something
- 1:44:18on it and he did. Here's a fellow who has two
- 1:44:23hits in the ballgame Johnny Temple. He has two
- 1:44:25for three. A double and a single and he scored
- 1:44:30twice. Phillips on at first two out. There's
- 1:44:35a bot and that's a good one. Going to have trouble
- 1:44:37throwing them out. Low throw. Safe. Nice play
- 1:44:39by Sieber. Base hit by Temple his third. Well
- 1:44:49that's smart baseball by Temple keeping the inning
- 1:44:51going. No sense a little fellow like him pumping
- 1:44:53away for the fence. First all here has more power
- 1:44:57and then you get around it. a bond who will follow
- 1:45:00him. So Temple collects his third hit of the
- 1:45:03day. Here's personal. You know whereas there
- 1:45:07are certain patterns in baseball that are followed
- 1:45:09because of a percentage. Again you take nothing
- 1:45:13for granted because just because of a two outs.
- 1:45:16No reason in the world why I felt like Temple
- 1:45:18couldn't lay one down and he did. There are two
- 1:45:22men out here foul tip. Pierce all has two for
- 1:45:29two. Both singles. He sacrificed his last time
- 1:45:31up. Temple's on it first. Bubba Phillips is on
- 1:45:35it second base. Indians trying to score more.
- 1:45:39They lead four to three here in the sixth inning.
- 1:45:46Foul on the screen. Strike two. The net's in
- 1:45:53trouble and he hasn't been wrapped for a solid
- 1:45:55hit yet. No balls two strikes. Base hit. Let's
- 1:46:19watch for the play at the plate. Bauer juggles
- 1:46:21the ball. The run scores. Temple goes to third.
- 1:46:25Parasols third hit. Makes the score five to three.
- 1:46:29The first well hit ball off of Braden in this
- 1:46:32inning. Temple went from first to third. As Phillips
- 1:46:36scored we anticipated a play at the plate but
- 1:46:38Bauer juggled the ball. No error charged however.
- 1:46:43He may not have had a chance at the plate because
- 1:46:45of a hop the ball took on the last bounce. He
- 1:46:48had to stop play it up off the middle of his
- 1:46:50chest and even had a feel of the ball clean.
- 1:46:53I doubt that he could have thrown home. Bell
- 1:46:59again. Yeah this guy homered his last time. It
- 1:47:04went right out to the pitcher. Bond is thrown
- 1:47:10out by Brunette. One run. Three hits. No errors.
- 1:47:16Two men left. So, at the end of five and a half
- 1:47:19innings, the score is Cleveland five, Kansas
- 1:47:22City three. Now, have you taken my razor again?
- 1:47:30No, I've got my own. I packed yours. You forgot
- 1:47:33your plane leaves at noon. Yes, but I'd like
- 1:47:35to shave before I leave, especially with my new
- 1:47:38Gillette adjustable. Well, there it is, darling.
- 1:47:40Thank you. How are you fixed for blades? There's
- 1:47:44a husband and wife situation. You know, the new
- 1:47:46Gillette adjustable razor instantly adapts itself
- 1:47:49to any beard, any skin. The most comfortable
- 1:47:52shave I've ever had in my life. Most of the fastidious
- 1:47:55women I know rely on Gillette to protect their
- 1:47:58loveliness. So fast, so clean. Lather, a few
- 1:48:03gentle strokes, and you're all finished. Get
- 1:48:16the Gillette adjustable with blue blade dispenser
- 1:48:19and travel case only 195 Well Barry Lampman has
- 1:48:26gone five having allowed only four hits and he
- 1:48:29needs in the ballgame five to three Walter Bond
- 1:48:39has come in from right field to get the sunglasses
- 1:48:45and we'll soon be ready to go in the bottom of
- 1:48:47the sixth game in philadelphia jack has gone
- 1:48:51into the 12th inning got a real battle over there
- 1:48:53going on between cal mcclish and uh feral is
- 1:48:56in the ball game now 12th innings two to two
- 1:48:58since now in philadelphia evidently the cardinal
- 1:49:05game is over and they defeated the dodgers nine
- 1:49:06to five i didn't want to mention that jack Well,
- 1:49:12here's Harry Chidi to see what he can do about
- 1:49:14starting something for the A's. He has a single
- 1:49:16out of two trips and an RBI. Kansas City catch
- 1:49:20it. Barry Lappman is the pitcher. shortstop what
- 1:50:24he held. Johnson is over to having walked once
- 1:50:30in the game. One out here in the bottom of the
- 1:50:34sixth. He's got that run back in a hurry didn't
- 1:50:36it. It's five to four. Guy like Chidi he doesn't
- 1:50:42have a always the healthiest batting average
- 1:50:44but as strong as he is in a game like this. Really
- 1:50:48be dangerous. Ken Hamlin. up and trying for the
- 1:51:41third time. One and one now. Burnett is up for
- 1:51:46his first time in the game. Two home runs in
- 1:51:48the setting ties the game. Five all. You know
- 1:52:44fans wonder why they don't play the old bunt
- 1:52:46for one run these days but there's a good example.
- 1:52:49When any man in a lineup can sock that ball over
- 1:52:51the fence you don't give up an out for anybody.
- 1:53:14The base is empty. Cheney and Hamlin have homered
- 1:53:17in this inning. One and one. Two out. Nobody
- 1:53:33on. The 1 -1. Two hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 1:53:47At the end of sixth, Indians five, Athletics
- 1:53:50five. It's time now for our stations to identify
- 1:53:53themselves. We pause for station identification.
- 1:53:58Bart Maverick finds jail a heaven on earth. Enjoy
- 1:54:00his humorous adventures tomorrow night on the
- 1:54:03ABC television network. Now it's the seventh
- 1:54:07inning here at Kansas City in the ball game that
- 1:54:09Gillette is bringing you. Score tied 5 -0 between
- 1:54:11Cleveland and Kansas City. In the American League
- 1:54:14and the other games. There they are. Detroit
- 1:54:186, Chicago 2, Boston 8, Washington 3, Yankees
- 1:54:223, Baltimore 2. This ballgame now belongs to
- 1:54:30Brunette to win or lose. See battles with Latman.
- 1:54:35Oliver Grant, whom we showed you earlier, is
- 1:54:36still throwing in the bullpen. Pito Francona
- 1:54:48leading off here in the seventh inning. I made
- 1:54:54an observation then he killed Jack and didn't
- 1:54:56finish it. This fellow's got a good fastball
- 1:54:59compared to throw bridge. He was throwing sinker
- 1:55:02balls and sliders for the most part. Francona
- 1:55:05hits one past the pitcher. Lumpy. Gary Lumpy
- 1:55:12throws out Francona who is now 0 for 2 having
- 1:55:15walked twice. One out here in the top of the
- 1:55:19seventh inning. The A's trail one to nothing.
- 1:55:22They lead in the second inning two to one. Then
- 1:55:24they trail four to two. Four to three. Five to
- 1:55:28three. Then they tied it with those two homers.
- 1:55:33The attention brings the field attendance today
- 1:55:359 ,659. 9659. 9 ,659 in attendance here. This
- 1:55:43is Russ Nixon. That's ball one. Come be with
- 1:55:46us next week. Certainly hope that you will be.
- 1:55:49Gillette will be bringing you big league baseball
- 1:55:51next Saturday at the same time. The Dodgers and
- 1:55:54the Giants from Los Angeles. Nixon hits it foul
- 1:55:58and it's one and one. Better lash down the TV
- 1:56:00sets next week, Jeff. Yeah. Those two ball clubs
- 1:56:04get together and then ballpark. A lot of things
- 1:56:07will be happening. Nixon here has a single lot
- 1:56:13of three trips. It's going to run. They had a
- 1:56:30glimpse of Dick Power who's in the on deck circle.
- 1:56:33That's Powell in the seats and that's on the
- 1:56:35screen. Two and two. One out and nobody on here
- 1:56:47in the seventh up. Make some chokes up on that
- 1:56:51bat. You get the bird you square. Just twist
- 1:58:31that dial and you're all set with the adjustable
- 1:58:35razor by Gillette for shapes so easy, fast and
- 1:58:40clean. So try it and see what we mean. And today
- 1:58:47when you buy the adjustable razor, you get the
- 1:58:50new Gillette super blue blade. A blade so keen
- 1:58:52and so wonderful, you have to use it to believe
- 1:58:55it. Designed specifically to fit all Gillette
- 1:58:58razors, it's the answer for every man, no matter
- 1:59:00how tough the beard or tender the skin. $1 .95
- 1:59:03gets you both the Gillette adjustable razor and
- 1:59:06dispenser of super blue blades. We're going into
- 1:59:14the bottom of the seventh inning and the fans
- 1:59:15here in Kansas City are standing for the hometown
- 1:59:18stretch. We have a new pitcher for the Cleveland
- 1:59:20Indians. The second heart of the game. He takes
- 1:59:26over for Barry Matlin. This is his second game.
- 1:59:32He is 0 and 1. And leading off will be the second
- 1:59:49baseman who was so busy in that last half. Jerry
- 1:59:52Lumpy. singles out of three trips. We're looking
- 2:00:01at another guy who's been really hum that P.
- 2:00:04Jerry Lump. To be followed by Bauer and Seaborn
- 2:00:07as the A's try to break the deadlock here in
- 2:00:09the seventh inning. Grant was 10 and 7 last year.
- 2:00:23This ballgame belongs to Grant and Brunette right
- 2:00:25at the moment. Tie five and five. The count is
- 2:00:29one and one. feel straight away from. I say these
- 2:02:54fans are in good voice here today. Hear the reaction
- 2:02:57to this intentional pass. This is one of the
- 2:02:59reasons that baseball officials or baseball owners
- 2:03:03decided rules committee decided to leave the
- 2:03:06intentional pass in on four pitches rather than
- 2:03:08just an automatic trip to the plate to the first
- 2:03:12base. It always gets some reaction. Walker Cooper
- 2:03:15is the coach. This is a good idea here. They
- 2:03:33check signs quite often with a man on second.
- 2:03:36Realize the man on second can also see those
- 2:03:38finger signs with a catcher just as well as a
- 2:03:40pitcher. And you can imagine they signed are
- 2:03:43a little more complicated. Good to go out and
- 2:03:46check occasionally and make sure someone didn't
- 2:03:48cross up. of Bob serve in the bottom of the seventh
- 2:03:55score tied by ball. On a second base is lumpy.
- 2:04:12Seeburn the runner at first. Ball breaking down
- 2:04:21and also appeared to be. Off the plate outside.
- 2:04:25Serve up there wants to get a piece of that ball
- 2:04:26he sees all those RBI's out in front of him there.
- 2:04:31On to the count. Serve is the batter Chidi will
- 2:04:35be next. If they don't get the double play. I
- 2:04:42feel deep in. straight away in the infield back
- 2:04:53looking for two. Double football. Out there.
- 2:04:59That's all. Served court one right at the shortstop.
- 2:05:03Held to Temple to power. No runs. One hit. No
- 2:05:06errors. One left. And at the end of seven still
- 2:05:09tied. The Indians five and the Athletics five.

- 2:06:46two. Brunette had been up before. Last year he
- 2:06:57was at Portland where he won five and lost 13.
- 2:07:06Ball three. It's the first appearance of the
- 2:07:16year for Brunette. All four. Well that's no way
- 2:07:23to start the A -thing. As far as the athletics
- 2:07:25are concerned. Burnett came on in the sixth inning.
- 2:07:36Gave up a run, then breezed through the seventh.
- 2:07:39Now starts off the eighth by giving a free pass.
- 2:07:43Here's Bubba Phillips. Bunch foul. He has single
- 2:07:47twice out of three trips. And a bunt again. The
- 2:08:03play is to first base. Whoops. Make one sure
- 2:08:07they say and Harry Cheney the catcher called
- 2:08:09the play. You can hear him calling from up here.
- 2:08:13We're going to have a pinch hitter. Harvey Kane
- 2:08:19is coming to the plate. Philip sacrifice held
- 2:08:24his down a second with one out. Here's the power
- 2:08:31who is involved in that controversial trade.
- 2:08:33Call the veto for Harvey Keane. I see he's got
- 2:08:41Rocky's old number down there. So they just swapped
- 2:08:43uniforms, Jack. That's what happens in the scheme
- 2:08:46of baseball. Time breaking right on the second.
- 2:08:50They're going to walk Keane. The A's have a right
- 2:08:57hander warming up in their bullpen and the Indians
- 2:09:00have the right handed batting Johnny Temple coming
- 2:09:02up so we might see some further action here.
- 2:09:05It's a good bet we'll see a runner for Keane
- 2:09:07also with a bad leg who will be on first base.
- 2:09:23So there's the intentional walk. Keane is on
- 2:09:26at first. He's immediately relieved by a pinch
- 2:09:29runner. Runner's on at first and second. Carol
- 2:09:36Hardy is the pinch runner. Johnny Temple the
- 2:09:41batter. And Burnett stays in. Temple has had
- 2:09:44two singles and a double. First and second one
- 2:09:48out. They both got there with walks. We're in
- 2:09:50the eighth and tied five to five. The A's really
- 2:09:53need the double play. Temple needs the base hit.
- 2:09:56Right back here. The lights have been turned
- 2:10:03on here in Kansas City. So Mike Lee will be the
- 2:10:16third Cleveland hurler. Of the day and the bottom
- 2:10:19of the. And just missed on that one. One and
- 2:10:27one. See the first baseman playing behind the
- 2:10:38runner Carol Hardy at first. There's Bubba Phillips
- 2:10:41down at second base. Or rather would he help.
- 2:10:45A little sacrifice in the center. Two balls and
- 2:10:52a strike. Temple doesn't strike out very often
- 2:10:57as we told you. And also he's a tough man to
- 2:10:59double up. They bunched John through the middle.
- 2:11:06That's where he hits usually. Hits the right
- 2:11:08field and up through the middle. You can see
- 2:11:10the two positions short and second there on your
- 2:11:12picture that they're squeezed in towards second
- 2:11:14base. Two balls and a strike they count. He held
- 2:11:22up. Three and one. Three and one the count. Temple
- 2:11:28is looking down at the third base coach Joe Joe
- 2:11:30White. Who in turn was looking into the dugout
- 2:11:32from then into Joe Gordon. Three balls and a
- 2:11:46strike. Think he'll be swinging. The A's have
- 2:12:05a right hander in the bullpen. This fellow is
- 2:12:11also very difficult to double up any pair solve
- 2:12:14and run. Rob Elliott makes no move here in the
- 2:12:19eighth inning bases loaded one out scored time
- 2:12:21five all. back down a piece of paper. He's really
- 2:12:31need to double play at first all needs at least
- 2:12:33the fly ball. Scored tied five and five. All
- 2:12:42the other baseball is over. And everybody else
- 2:12:47played this afternoon. That could use a strikeout.
- 2:12:55There's a high pop up. The infield fire rule
- 2:12:57applies. The batter is out. The bases will still
- 2:12:59be loaded with two men out. The second baseman
- 2:13:01makes the catch. Well there's a big one. Here's
- 2:13:09all really angry as you can see. Popped out to
- 2:13:11lumpy and it puts it up. To the Indian rookie.
- 2:13:18The right fielder Walter Bond. There's Temple
- 2:13:21on a first base. Carol Hardy running for key
- 2:13:26to bat it for the pitcher on its second and what
- 2:13:28he held on at third. Two men out a stunning score
- 2:13:31tied by a ball and here is bond who has a homer
- 2:13:33and a single out of four trips. That got a real
- 2:13:43big out when he got Pierce Hall to pop up. No
- 2:13:48more throwing situation in baseball and bases
- 2:13:51loaded to. You're speaking of a spectator Jack
- 2:13:54not a pitcher, right? Go garden comes hustling
- 2:14:00out the dugout to claim a block on the part of
- 2:14:03the pitcher George Brunette one thing about it.
- 2:14:22Gordon is probably accomplishing something even
- 2:14:25though he is going to lose the argument here
- 2:14:27and that would be to try to upset the pitcher.
- 2:14:31Not only Gordon came up keen and about four other
- 2:14:34players all simultaneously came off of that bench
- 2:14:37when they thought they detected a ball to the
- 2:14:42second baseman. Here's Cedric Adams, syndicated
- 2:15:04columnist for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune
- 2:15:06and famous radio and TV broadcaster, checking
- 2:15:08the news. And has he got a feature story for
- 2:15:10you? Tough beard and tender skin used to be a
- 2:15:14handicap, but brother, not anymore. Gillette
- 2:15:16has a brand new blade for me and men like me.
- 2:15:19It's the new Super Blue Blade, and super it is.
- 2:15:22It actually glides across your face. Why, you
- 2:15:26don't even know you're shaving. Yes, sir, easy
- 2:15:28does it. They tell me years of research are behind
- 2:15:31this blade, and I certainly believe that. The
- 2:15:34Super Blue Blade is made by an entirely new process
- 2:15:37to give you clean, comfortable shaves you may
- 2:15:40never have had before. But you've got to try
- 2:15:42this new blade to believe it. So take my word
- 2:15:44and give it a whirl. Yes, give the Super Blue
- 2:15:46Blade a try. You're in for a new shaving experience
- 2:15:49at a nearby store with a Gillette adjustable
- 2:15:51razor, $1 .95, or a dispenser of 10 .69 cents.
- 2:15:56Bottom of the eighth now on the athletics. We're
- 2:15:59given a life when they get out of that and that
- 2:16:01was equal to the occasion. Last time up and the
- 2:16:07fans are yelling for a little more. The Kansas
- 2:16:13City catcher. A new pitcher is on the mound for
- 2:16:20the Cleveland club. He follows their starter
- 2:16:25Barry Lattman and their first relief man Mudcat
- 2:16:28Grant. It's a big ball six five Mike Lee. Oh
- 2:16:37no excuse me. Change uniforms as often happens
- 2:16:42at this time of year. Paul Paul on our part meant
- 2:16:46too much about it because just didn't recognize
- 2:16:48the fellow Bob Grim is the pitcher. Former member
- 2:16:51of the athletics and of course of the Yankees
- 2:16:53Bob Grim. These days you can't even tell the
- 2:16:58players with a scorecard Jack. You're right.
- 2:17:02Last of the eighth. Grimm pitching to T .D. Ball.
- 2:17:10We're in the eighth. Score tied 5 -0. So, Jim
- 2:17:25Grant, who was in the game, pitched only one
- 2:17:27inning. Wasn't scored a five. Here's the one
- 2:17:36-one. Left center. On the run is Prancota. He
- 2:17:40gets it. Chitty flies to Prancota. Remember,
- 2:17:47Tito was the one who dropped the fly ball back
- 2:17:50in the fifth inning. He squeezed that one. One
- 2:17:55out and here's the. Athletics third baseman.
- 2:17:59Been on base once with a walk he's over to. Bob.
- 2:18:04Johnson. Grim gets a head on him. It's been a
- 2:18:17busy game. A lot of hits. Fall for the Indians.
- 2:18:28Seven for the A's. One out, nobody on. One and
- 2:18:38one to count. Foul out of play. thousand six
- 2:18:53hundred and fifty nine in the ballgame today.
- 2:19:03Here's the one to get down the third baseline
- 2:19:05foul. Remains the same. I would have been troubled
- 2:19:13if Steve there. Walker Cooper talking to Johnson.
- 2:19:19Next Saturday afternoon Gillette will be bringing
- 2:19:21a big league baseball once again as we will be
- 2:19:23every Saturday afternoon Carl and I will be in
- 2:19:27Los Angeles to describe for you the Giant Dodger
- 2:19:31game Join us, will you please? Struck him out
- 2:19:37So Grim retires the first two men Ken Hamlin
- 2:19:52here a homer his last time up and tied the game
- 2:19:54is only hit. And three trips he's the Kansas
- 2:19:57City shortstop. Grim gets ahead here to. And
- 2:20:04as a little fellow at five ten one hundred and
- 2:20:06sixty eight. Two out and the base is empty. The
- 2:20:17A's have hit five home runs this year. And all
- 2:20:20of them have come with the bases empty. Here's
- 2:20:29the one -one. Score tied five to five. Last of
- 2:20:46the eight. Foul. Tonto. Grim's getting the fastball
- 2:20:53over. Getting him out with the fastball and wasting
- 2:20:55the curve, it appears. I first saw this fella.
- 2:21:01He was really a hard thrower. And of course,
- 2:21:04since then, he's developed a good slider and
- 2:21:06a good curve. Polk out now. That's a pattern
- 2:21:14of a young pitcher, Jack. They came in on the
- 2:21:16cover of the leg. Good strong arm. big strong
- 2:21:18back just rare back and throw and they learn
- 2:21:21all these other things. So Ken Hamlin gets a
- 2:21:30base on ball there's a tie breaking run and let's
- 2:21:33see what the A's do. Pitchers due to bat George
- 2:21:38Brunette. No one has come out yet. have a pinch
- 2:21:48hitter. A pinch hitter for George Burnett will
- 2:22:03bring on yet another Kansas City pitcher in the
- 2:22:05ninth inning. In the batter here is Marv Thornberry.
- 2:22:28Two out, run around first. It's been a rather
- 2:22:44long game, two and a half hours right now. But
- 2:22:47a lot of excitement in this 5 -5 contest. Graham
- 2:23:03is way out in front. See the first baseman, Power,
- 2:23:07holding Hamlin close. No balls, two strikes on
- 2:23:10the batter, Throneberry. One and two. Graham
- 2:23:22and Throneberry were teammates at one time. Here's
- 2:23:39the one and two. Brownberry down on strikes.
- 2:23:42Grimm got two strikeouts in that inning. No runs,
- 2:23:44no hits, no errors, one left. And so at the end
- 2:23:46of the eighth inning, the score is Indians five,
- 2:23:49Athletics five. And now it's the ninth inning
- 2:24:34of the ballgame. baseball is over Detroit 6 Chicago
- 2:24:412 Boston 8 Washington 3 Yankees 3 Baltimore 2
- 2:24:47and in the National League all of those ballgames
- 2:24:51are over Philadelphia defeated Cincinnati 3 to
- 2:24:532 Pittsburgh knocked off the Braves 5 to 4 the
- 2:24:57Giants buried the Cubs 18 to 2 and the Cardinals
- 2:25:00won their third in a row taking the Dodgers 9
- 2:25:03to 5. A new pitcher for the Athletics. Dick Hall
- 2:25:12started. Trowbridge came out in the first inning.
- 2:25:15Brunette in the sixth inning. And now it's Marty
- 2:25:20Coutina. Marty Coutina. He'll be facing the big
- 2:25:30hitters on the Cleveland club. So we're in the
- 2:25:36ninth but nothing has been settled. Still tied
- 2:25:38five and five. Bettina has appeared in one game.
- 2:25:43Having pitched one and eight. Formerly the property
- 2:25:51to the Cardinals. Pitched only seven innings
- 2:25:54for the A's last year. Spent most of his time
- 2:25:56at Portland where he won 14 and lost 10. Here's
- 2:26:00Tito Francona to start it off in the ninth inning.
- 2:26:02He walked twice and lumpy threw him out twice
- 2:26:05from second base. Curveball ball one. Shot foul.
- 2:26:25One and one. The fourth Kansas City Huller in
- 2:26:29the ballgame. Cleveland meanwhile he goes three.
- 2:26:36He started laughing and ran in the seventh Grim
- 2:26:40in the eighth and was still in a foul out of
- 2:26:44play. And Francona is in the hole one and two.
- 2:27:05out the one to pitch. They said to left a single
- 2:27:10for Frank Conner to left. His first hit third
- 2:27:16time he's been on base. And there is the lead
- 2:27:19run. Stroke that nicely to the opposite field.
- 2:27:24Well they said by the book that's where you're
- 2:27:25supposed to hit a curve ball and I think folks
- 2:27:27at home on their screen could see that that pitch
- 2:27:30was a curve ball. He laid it in the left field
- 2:27:32for a base hit. Now it's Russ Nixon the catcher.
- 2:27:38Who has a single out of four trips. And has going
- 2:27:42around. Time called. Francona was breaking with
- 2:27:49the pitch but time had been called. Interesting
- 2:27:56to see what happens on this play we'll keep an
- 2:27:58eye on the base runner for your Seaborn holding
- 2:28:00him close. Popped up. Third baseman wants it.
- 2:28:10Now the shortstop, Hamlin. Nixon pops out to
- 2:28:16the shortstop. And here's the Kansas City favorite
- 2:28:20coming. J .D. talking to Tina. Run around first
- 2:29:18to be looking forward to the. Ninth inning for
- 2:29:22the A's it's due to be at the top of the order.
- 2:29:24Tuttle lumpy and bowler. Might have been a pitch
- 2:29:33out. Tina has a. unusual style he steps almost
- 2:29:39as a crossfire sidearmor but his his right arm
- 2:29:43comes over the top. He's keeping a real good
- 2:29:48eye on Frank Conan. If held here it keeps the
- 2:29:56inning going. Love of Phillips will be the batter.
- 2:30:00Two men out here in the top of the ninth. situation
- 2:30:06like this you oftentimes see them turn the hitter
- 2:30:09loose on a three nothing pitch. Run around first
- 2:30:16to outscored tied 5 all in the ninth ball for.
- 2:30:23Francona goes to second. The batter is due to
- 2:30:29be Phillips. We're going to have a pinch hitter
- 2:30:32I believe. Bob Hale is going to come out and
- 2:30:45that. Phillips had gone two for three in the
- 2:30:53game. Bob Hale an infielder formerly with Baltimore.
- 2:31:01Left handed batter comes out to hit. So a single
- 2:31:03and a walk is put the. Athletics in trouble foul
- 2:31:07out of play. Two on and two out. The Indians
- 2:31:21have left quite a few stranded in the ballgame.
- 2:31:23They've left a total of ten men on base. Curveball.
- 2:31:31Coutinho should throw them out. ninth inning
- 2:31:47the score is still tied Indians five athletics
- 2:31:50by. The left range of big league baseball every
- 2:31:53Saturday. Mr Loffa yeah it's almost seven oh
- 2:32:05thank you I'll be right there. But Frank there's
- 2:32:10nothing to worry about I'm mining the store good
- 2:32:12evening Peter well good evening welcome to the
- 2:32:13change that will help. You and Frank should now
- 2:32:15have a beautiful restaurant. Did you hear that?
- 2:32:17Anthony Booth, I'll be with you in a minute.
- 2:32:23Good evening, Bucci. Yes, Frank. Everything is
- 2:32:27the coolest, Frank. There's nothing like a Gillette
- 2:32:31shave to look your best. And this new Gillette
- 2:32:34adjustable, well, it's the end. The swinging
- 2:32:37end. And that's especially true with the new
- 2:32:40Gillette super blue blade. This blade shaves
- 2:32:42you so keen, so smooth in any Gillette razor,
- 2:32:46you have to try it to believe it. You get the
- 2:32:48super blue blade with a Gillette adjustable razor
- 2:32:50for $1 .95. Nine -tening and the ball goes around
- 2:32:57the infield. Bob Grimm has this ball game to
- 2:33:00hang onto. It's tied 5 -5. The A's looking for
- 2:33:03their second in a row over Cleveland. Cleveland
- 2:33:06trying to win their first of the year and here's
- 2:33:07the top of the order, the center fielder Bill
- 2:33:09Tuttle. George Strickland is the third baseman
- 2:33:11now for Cleveland. There's the base hit. Makes
- 2:33:20a wide turn. A single for Cuddle. That's the
- 2:33:24first time he's been on base and the A's fans
- 2:33:26say it couldn't have happened at a better time.
- 2:33:30Bill Cuddle parked one through the middle. only
- 2:33:37hit number eight for the A's have been out hit
- 2:33:3913 to 8. They could win it right here. Here is
- 2:33:42lumpy and of course they'll be looking for the
- 2:33:44button. Good fun. You'll be out at first. Seeing
- 2:33:55a lot of good sacrificing in the game today.
- 2:34:07They go back to that one run brand of baseball.
- 2:34:11Hank Bauer, who is already considered the mayor
- 2:34:14of Kansas City, could really be a popular guy
- 2:34:16right here. Now the Indians have a couple of
- 2:34:20choices to make. They have first base open. They
- 2:34:21could pitch to Bauer and walk Sievern. Or they
- 2:34:24could walk Bauer and bring in left handed or
- 2:34:26pitch to Sievern. All of those things are going
- 2:34:29to be discussed right now on the mound between
- 2:34:33Gordon number 35, catcher Nixon and the pitcher
- 2:34:36Bob Grimm. He's in trouble right here. In a pitch
- 2:35:02to our base not going to get this time we can
- 2:35:05fly and power the batter. He's all for three
- 2:35:07he struck out twice. Seaborn is due to that next.
- 2:35:23To repeat, Bill Tuttle, at whom you're looking
- 2:35:25now, can really run. by the score of six to five.
- 2:36:09We've driven the hosing cover, and Marty Kutsana
- 2:36:12getting the win in the ball game. The final score,
- 2:36:15the Athletics six and the Indians five.
