- 0:00Griffin: Welcome back to Stories for Robots.
- 0:03I'm Griffin Schwed, your host and storyteller.
- 0:06Join me as I share some of humanity's most timeless tales with two silly robots who
- 0:12are trying to understand human culture by exploring fairy tales, folklore, and
- 0:16historical events from around the world.
- 0:19In Season 1, we're diving into stories you know, or at least you
- 0:23think you do We're going back to the original versions of classic
- 0:28tales made famous by animated movies.
- 0:31But these original stories are pretty different from the
- 0:33versions you grew up with.
- 0:35My two robot friends have no idea what's coming, and honestly, you probably don't
- 0:41either.
- 0:43Hi, Vector.
- 0:44Hi, Spark
- 0:45Vector: Greetings.
- 0:46Question: What is the expected ROI of this discussion?
- 0:50Spark: Oh, great.
- 0:51He's broken.
- 0:52Griffin: Wait a second.
- 0:54He must have gotten a bad update last night.
- 0:56He's speaking in business jargon.
- 0:58Spark: Oh no!
- 1:01I can't take anymore.
- 1:03Reset him quick.
- 1:09Vector: What happened I had a terrible nightmare about a human workplace.
- 1:13Spark: Thank goodness he's back to normal.
- 1:16Well, normal for Vector.
- 1:18Vector: Offense taken.
- 1:19Griffin: Let's just get into it before anything else can go wrong.
- 1:23Today's story is Rapunzel
- 1:25Spark: Ooh, I love that movie.
- 1:27Griffin: Yeah, that movie is one of my faves.
- 1:29But today we're gonna hear the original story, which was made popular
- 1:33by our friends The Brothers Grimm.
- 1:35Spark: Love those guys.
- 1:37Griffin: Me too.
- 1:38But they didn't invent this story either.
- 1:40They probably adapted it from a story called Petrosinella,
- 1:44which was written by Giambattista Basile all the way back in 1634.
- 1:49Vector: That is old.
- 1:50Is it older than you?
- 1:52Griffin: Vector, that was like 400 years ago.
- 1:54How old do you think I am?
- 1:56Vector: I don't know.
- 1:56You seem pretty old.
- 1:58At least three hundred.
- 2:00No offense.
- 2:01Griffin: Wow.
- 2:02I'm not even gonna tell you how old I am.
- 2:04Anyway, today I'm gonna tell you the Grimm version, and then I'm gonna tell
- 2:09you the ending of the Bastille version because it's fun and kinda crazy.
- 2:13Spark: Let's do it!
- 2:14Griffin: Sweet.
- 2:15So just let your hair down, relax, and listen.
- 2:18Vector: Robots famously do not have hair.
- 2:21Wait.
- 2:22Terrible pun detected.
- 2:24Griffin: I'll just start then.
- 2:27In a little village in the countryside lives a young couple
- 2:30who have just gotten married.
- 2:32They're very happy together, and they got a great deal on a cozy
- 2:35little home that sits on a small hill overlooking a gorgeous walled garden.
- 2:41Now, why did they get such a great deal, you might ask?
- 2:44Spark: Yeah, no one asked.
- 2:46Griffin: Well, I'll tell you anyway.
- 2:47The garden is owned by a creepy old sorceress.
- 2:51Spark: Oh, let's call her Ol' Swampy McChickenface!
- 2:54Griffin: She already has a name.
- 2:55It's Dame Gothel.
- 2:56Vector: Fiddlesticks.
- 2:58Griffin: And everyone's scared of Dame Gothel.
- 3:00She's got long, stringy hair and bony fingers.
- 3:04And more importantly, people say that she knows powerful dark magic.
- 3:10So for the most part, everyone in the village tries to stay out of
- 3:13her way, including the young couple.
- 3:16Vector: Let's call them Stinky and Slappy.
- 3:18Griffin: Nope.
- 3:19Spark: Mildred and Jimbo?
- 3:20Griffin: Fine.
- 3:21Vector: No fair.
- 3:22Griffin: We gotta move on.
- 3:24Mildred and Jimbo are desperate to have a baby.
- 3:27So naturally, they're thrilled when Mildred finally becomes pregnant.
- 3:31And as often happens when someone becomes pregnant, Mildred starts having
- 3:34powerful cravings for strange foods.
- 3:37In her case, poor old Mildred becomes obsessed with the Rapunzel lettuce
- 3:41growing in Dame Gothel's garden.
- 3:44All day long, she stares at that lettuce through her window, And at
- 3:47night she lies awake thinking about it.
- 3:50Vector: Do humans actually love lettuce this much?
- 3:53Griffin: Not usually.
- 3:54This is crazy.
- 3:56And eventually Jimbo gets worried.
- 3:58He can see that Mildred isn't eating or sleeping, so he asks her what's wrong.
- 4:03Tearfully, she explains, "Oh, Jimbo, it's just that gorgeous Rapunzel
- 4:08lettuce. I want it so badly. If I don't get some, I think, I think I might
- 4:14die." Now Jimbo is terrified of Dame
- 4:19Gothel, but he loves Mildred dearly, and he's really worried about her.
- 4:23He can tell she needs this lettuce more than anything.
- 4:27So that evening, he sneaks out of their house, climbs up the high
- 4:31stone wall, and lowers himself into the garden on the other side.
- 4:37By the light of the moon, he finds the patch of Rapunzel lettuce, quickly
- 4:41pulls up enough to make a nice big salad, and tucks it into his bag.
- 4:47As he heads back to the wall to make his escape, he hears a
- 4:50sinister rustling behind him.
- 4:52" Spark: Oh no.
- 4:52Oh no.
- 4:52Oh no.
- 4:53Oh no.
- 4:53Oh no."
- 4:54Griffin: But it's nothing, just an adorable bunny.
- 4:57So he climbs the wall, jumps down the other side, and brings
- 5:00the lettuce back to Brenda.
- 5:02Spark: Why would you tell it like that?
- 5:04Griffin: It's called Drama Spark.
- 5:05Look it up.
- 5:07Anyhow, Brenda takes the Rapunzel and scarfs it down.
- 5:11Spark: No dressing or anything?
- 5:12Griffin: No dressing.
- 5:14She just eats it straight.
- 5:16And when she's done, she wants more, like lots more.
- 5:20So the next night, Jimbo goes back outside, climbs up the wall, swings
- 5:24his legs over, and drops down into the cool, damp soil on the other side.
- 5:30But this time, as he makes his way silently down the garden row, he can
- 5:34feel someone's gaze following him.
- 5:37He calls out, "Who, who's there?" Out pops Dame Gothel.
- 5:44Spark: Vector, this is no time for sound effects.
- 5:46Griffin: And she says, " Ha, I've caught you red-handed.
- 5:50It was you who stole my Rapunzel last night, and now you've come back for more.
- 5:55Well, you'll pay dearly for this, with your life." A terrified Jimbo
- 6:01stammers back, "P-p-p-please, m-my wife, my wife, "She's pregnant and has been
- 6:07overcome with cravings for your Rapunzel.
- 6:09If, if she doesn't get some, she, she thinks she might die." At
- 6:14this, Dame Gothel softens a bit. The edges of her cruel snake-like
- 6:20mouth twist up slightly into a sort of smile, and she says, "Fine.
- 6:26If your wife must have my Rapunzel, take it.
- 6:29She may have all she needs.
- 6:31I have only one condition.
- 6:33When your baby comes, you will give her to me, and I will raise her as my own."
- 6:39Jimbo is horrified by this proposal, but he's also really scared.
- 6:44Plus, he kinda thinks she must be kidding.
- 6:46The whole idea is completely crazy.
- 6:48So he agrees and quickly runs away, back to the safety of their little house.
- 6:53Vector: How much lettuce is typically considered a good trade for a human baby?
- 6:57Like 100 pounds?
- 6:59Spark: No amount, Vector.
- 7:00No amount.
- 7:01Vector: I see.
- 7:03Griffin: After a few months and lots and lots of lettuce later,
- 7:06a beautiful baby girl is born.
- 7:08Brenda and Jimbo are over the moon.
- 7:11Vector: They must return to the Earth's gravity at once.
- 7:14Griffin: It's just an expression.
- 7:15It means they're really happy.
- 7:17Vector: I knew that.
- 7:19Griffin: And just as they're settling in to take their first nap together as a
- 7:22family, who should burst through the door?
- 7:25Spark: The Kool-Aid guy.
- 7:27Vector: Oh, yeah!
- 7:28Griffin: What?
- 7:29No.
- 7:29You guys have been watching too much YouTube.
- 7:32It's Dame Gothel.
- 7:33She's here for the baby.
- 7:35Vector: Oh no.
- 7:36Griffin: She snatches the baby and says to Jimbo, "Remember our deal.
- 7:40You got your lettuce, the baby is mine.
- 7:43But don't worry, I'll take good care of her.
- 7:46Goodbye And with that, she turns on her heel and walks out.
- 7:51Jimbo and Brenda are stunned, but there's nothing they can do.
- 7:55Spark: Really?
- 7:56Griffin: I don't know.
- 7:56Maybe they could do something, but they're scared of, you know, sorcery.
- 8:01So they do nothing, and we pretty much don't hear from them again.
- 8:06In the meantime, Dame Gothel does as she promised.
- 8:09She names the baby Rapunzel and raises her as if she's her own daughter.
- 8:14Spark: Aw, so sweet.
- 8:15She was just lonely.
- 8:17Griffin: Until she's 12, at which point she locks her in a tall
- 8:20tower with only one tiny window.
- 8:22Spark: Never mind.
- 8:24Vector: Why does she do this?
- 8:26Griffin: We don't really know, but maybe she was really lonely and she
- 8:30didn't want Rapunzel to grow up, fall in love with someone, and move away.
- 8:33Vector: Then this is a good plan.
- 8:35Griffin: Well, not too good.
- 8:37You see, Rapunzel lives this way for many years and turns into
- 8:41a very beautiful young woman.
- 8:43And since she's pretty bored up there in the tower, one of the things
- 8:46she does to amuse herself is grow her blonde hair very, very long.
- 8:51Like, seventy feet long.
- 8:53Vector: That's too much hair.
- 8:55Griffin: Well, she does have lots of time for brushing and combing.
- 8:58Plus, the hair is functional.
- 9:00When Dame Gothel comes to visit each day, she calls up, " Rapunzel,
- 9:04Rapunzel, let down your hair." And then Rapunzel loops her hair over a
- 9:08hook, lowers it down, and uses it to pull Dame Gothel up through the window.
- 9:14Vector: Finally, a use for hair.
- 9:16Most hair is pathetically useless.
- 9:18If I were a human, I would be nice and shiny and bald.
- 9:22Griffin: Noted, my good robot.
- 9:25Now, unfortunately for Rapunzel, Dame Gothel is her only
- 9:28visitor for years and years.
- 9:30She loves Dame Gothel in a way.
- 9:33After all, she's been the only mother figure she's ever known.
- 9:36But she's still desperately lonely.
- 9:39Even though Dame Gothel visits her every day, she spends most of her time
- 9:43alone, daydreaming of a different life.
- 9:47One thing that brings her joy is singing.
- 9:49She has a beautiful voice and spends lots of time singing
- 9:52songs that she composes herself.
- 9:56Vector: Yo, yo, yo, my name is Rapunzel, i've got more hair than Attila the Hunzel
- 10:02Spark: Vector, I had to turn off my hearing sensors.
- 10:05Griffin: I really wish I could do that.
- 10:08Anyway, one day she's singing one of her songs, definitely not that one,
- 10:13and who should walk by but a prince.
- 10:15He's captivated by the lovely voice and also super confused about where it's
- 10:20coming from and why there's a seven-story tower in the middle of the woods with
- 10:24no door and only one tiny window.
- 10:27To find out, he decides to hide in some nearby bushes and just watch for a while.
- 10:33He ends up staying hidden there for many hours, enchanted by the
- 10:36singing and trying to get a look at the mysterious lady of the tower.
- 10:40After a long time, Dame Gothel shows up and calls out, " Rapunzel,
- 10:44Rapunzel, let down your hair!"
- 10:48Imagine his surprise when 70 feet of gorgeous blonde hair
- 10:52come tumbling from the window.
- 10:54He watches with a mix of fascination and horror as the old woman is
- 10:58pulled all the way up . And in that moment, just as Rapunzel is helping
- 11:02Dame Gothel through the window,
- 11:04he sees Rapunzel's face for the first time and is immediately smitten.
- 11:08Vector: Smitten, this is a word for a smooshed kitten.
- 11:12Griffin: Oh yes, he sees her face and becomes a smooshed kitten.
- 11:16Vector: Really?
- 11:17Griffin: No.
- 11:18It means he feels like he's in love with her.
- 11:20Vector: I knew that.
- 11:21I was testing you.
- 11:22Griffin: Right.
- 11:23Well, now the prince can't stop thinking about the mysterious and beautiful
- 11:27woman in the tower, and he begins hiding in the bushes each and every day.
- 11:32He listens to her singing and watches as Dame Gothel comes to visit.
- 11:37Soon, he learns her routines and even feels like he knows her like a dear
- 11:41friend from listening to her songs.
- 11:43Spark: Okay, a little creepy.
- 11:44But I'm gonna give him a pass since he might save her from being trapped.
- 11:48Also, they might fall in L word.
- 11:51Vector: Laser Blaster.
- 11:52Spark: That is not the L word.
- 11:54I meant love.
- 11:55Griffin: Very true.
- 11:56And one day, the prince works up his courage, and he strolls up to
- 12:00the tower and shouts, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair."
- 12:05Spark: Ew, did he really sound like that?
- 12:08Griffin: Well, he had to sound like Dame Gothel and not some rando.
- 12:11Anyhow, moments later, Rapunzel's flowing locks come tumbling down the tower until
- 12:16they brush gently against the ground
- 12:20Vector, those are horrible sound effects.
- 12:22It did not sound like that at all.
- 12:24Vector: Fine.
- 12:26Griffin: So a little awkwardly, he manages to hold onto the hair by
- 12:29wrapping it around his arm and leg.
- 12:31And then, slowly but surely, Rapunzel hoists him up to the window.
- 12:36Spark: He must be, um, how should I say this?
- 12:39A heavier load than little old lady Dame Gothel?
- 12:42Griffin: He is.
- 12:44By the time he gets up there, she is all sweaty and tired.
- 12:47And let me tell you, she is really surprised when the
- 12:50prince pops through that window.
- 12:52Spark: We gotta give this guy a name in the story.
- 12:54Who gets to do it?
- 12:55Griffin: Okay, I'll count to three, then shout out the name you want,
- 12:58and I'll choose the best one.
- 12:59Ready?
- 13:00One, two, three.
- 13:02Vector: Colonel McButter Smithlesberry
- 13:04Griffin: Ooh, close call.
- 13:06But it's Chester.
- 13:07Chester wins.
- 13:08Vector: Cheaters.
- 13:10Griffin: So Prince Chester arrives in the tower.
- 13:12At first, he's so blown away by Rapunzel's beauty that he can hardly speak.
- 13:17But after a few moments, he regains his senses and introduces himself.
- 13:22Rapunzel is terrified and skeptical.
- 13:24Vector: And sweaty.
- 13:25Griffin: Yes, but Chester pours his heart out to her.
- 13:29He tells her all about how he fell in love with her listening to her
- 13:32sing, and how her lyrics make him feel like he's always known her.
- 13:36And that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
- 13:39Spark: Aww.
- 13:40Griffin: Yes, it's super cute.
- 13:43And very soon, Rapunzel falls in love with the prince, too.
- 13:46Not only is he charming and handsome, he is also literally the only person
- 13:51she's ever met besides Dame Gothel.
- 13:54He begins visiting her every day,
- 13:56timing his arrival to make sure he never crosses paths with Dame Gothel.
- 14:01As time goes on, they find it harder and harder to be apart.
- 14:05They both desperately want to go back to the prince's palace, get
- 14:08married, and live happily ever after.
- 14:11Spark: Oh, I want that too.
- 14:12Let me guess.
- 14:13So one day he brings an actual ladder and they climb down right
- 14:16away and live happily ever after.
- 14:17The end.
- 14:19Griffin: Oh, sweet, sweet Spark.
- 14:21If only it were that simple.
- 14:22Spark: It's not?
- 14:24Griffin: Of course not.
- 14:25But they do come up with a plan
- 14:27Every time Chester visits, he will bring her a length of rope made out of silk.
- 14:32Then Rapunzel will weave them together into a sturdy ladder.
- 14:36When the ladder is long enough, they'll use it to climb down and ride into
- 14:39the sunset to live happily ever after.
- 14:42The problem is they need the ladder to be seventy feet long, so this plan is
- 14:46going to take a while to come together.
- 14:48Vector: Why do it in this insanely slow manner?
- 14:51Also, she could have just used her own hair to rappel down.
- 14:54Griffin: Vector, that's, that's actually a very good point.
- 14:58Spark: Yeah, it's a terrible plan, but at least it's romantic.
- 15:01He has to come to her each night, and together they weave this ladder that
- 15:04will allow her to escape into his arms.
- 15:07It's kinda like a metaphor for building their love.
- 15:10Vector: Gross and boring.
- 15:12I would put an enormous trampoline under the tower, grab
- 15:14Rapunzel's hand, and jump out.
- 15:16Then we would do like 10 backflips in the air and take a selfie.
- 15:21Then we would land on a horse, high five, and ride away.
- 15:24Griffin: I don't know why he didn't think of that.
- 15:26But they're moving forward with the silk rope ladder plan, and
- 15:30everything's going pretty well.
- 15:32After a few weeks, they've made, like, 45 feet of ladder.
- 15:35And Rapunzel and Chester are getting really excited, imagining their lives
- 15:39together and making little plans.
- 15:41Until one day Rapunzel makes a mistake.
- 15:45Spark: Oh, no.
- 15:46Griffin: Yeah.
- 15:48Dame Gothel comes to visit, and she's getting hauled up
- 15:52just like she always does.
- 15:53But Rapunzel is a bit distracted.
- 15:56She's busy thinking about her freedom and all the wonderful sights she's
- 15:59gonna see with Prince Chester.
- 16:01So when Dame Gothel pops into the tower, she blurts out,
- 16:04" Wow, you really are so much lighter than the Prince."
- 16:07Vector: Oh boy.
- 16:08Griffin: Well, Dame Gothel does not like this at all.
- 16:12Rapunzel realizes her mistake and tries to calm Dame Gothel down.
- 16:16She tries to explain, but Gothel isn't hearing any of it.
- 16:20In anger, she grabs a pair of scissors and cuts Rapunzel's beautiful long hair.
- 16:26Spark: Um, how will they get down?
- 16:28Griffin: Oh, that's a great question.
- 16:30I guess magic?
- 16:32They never really explain that.
- 16:34But they do get down, and Dame Gothel brings Rapunzel far
- 16:37away, deep into the wilderness.
- 16:40Then she returns to the tower to wait for Prince Chester.
- 16:44Soon he arrives and calls out, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair."
- 16:50Sneaky old Dame Gothel ties one end of Rapunzel's long ponytail to the hook and
- 16:54throws the other end down to Chester.
- 16:57Thinking everything is normal, he grabs the hair and whistles excitedly
- 17:00as Dame Gothel hoists him up.
- 17:03Reaching the top, he hops through the window, silken rope in hand,
- 17:07ready to smooch and hug Rapunzel.
- 17:10Vector: Gross.
- 17:11Griffin: He's shocked and horrified to instead find Dame Gothel standing
- 17:14there, veins bulging in anger.
- 17:17She screeches, "So you must be Prince Chester.
- 17:21You came for your little bird Rapunzel, but she's flown out of the nest.
- 17:25The cat got her, and he'll scratch out your eyes.
- 17:28You'll never see her again." Chester is overcome with grief.
- 17:34He thinks Rapunzel is dead, and he can't bear the thought of living
- 17:37without her, so he throws himself out the window of the tower.
- 17:41Vector: Onto a waiting trampoline?
- 17:43To do some cool flip tricks?
- 17:45Griffin: Sadly, no.
- 17:46But he does survive.
- 17:48His fall is broken by some rose bushes that are growing at the foot of the tower.
- 17:52They save his life, but the thorns scratch up his eyes so badly that he can't
- 17:56see, just like Dame Gothel predicted.
- 18:00Chester is so grief-stricken, he spends his days just
- 18:03wandering through the forest.
- 18:05He survives on nuts and berries, stumbling from one place to the next, weeping.
- 18:10And poor Rapunzel, she's better off, but not by much.
- 18:15Dame Gothel makes her live in a run-down little shack in the middle of nowhere.
- 18:19She has no visitors and never enough food . The only silver lining is that
- 18:23Rapunzel gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl, who she loves very much.
- 18:29And despite the terrible conditions of her life, they bring her great joy.
- 18:33Spark: Aw, she and Prince Chester had babies?
- 18:36Griffin: Yep.
- 18:37And one day, as Chester is stumbling along, weeping as always, he
- 18:41hears a voice, a beautiful voice.
- 18:44It's Rapunzel.
- 18:47So he runs towards the sound of her voice, tripping over
- 18:49roots and branches as he goes.
- 18:52Finally, he bursts into the little clearing outside the shack.
- 18:56Rapunzel runs to him and throws her arms around him.
- 18:59They jump around, hugging and laughing and weeping for joy.
- 19:02Vector: Humans are such crybabies.
- 19:05Griffin: Yes, we are.
- 19:06And it's a good thing too, because when Rapunzel's tears touch Chester's
- 19:10ruined eyes, they heal them.
- 19:13And all of a sudden he can see, and he's completely overcome with emotion
- 19:17as he looks at Rapunzel and for the very first time at his beautiful children.
- 19:21Spark: Yes, and so he takes them all home.
- 19:24She becomes a princess, and they live happily ever after, right?
- 19:28Griffin: Well, actually, yes.
- 19:30Spark: Oh, sweet.
- 19:32Vector: So what about Dame Gothel?
- 19:34Spark: Oh yeah, and her real parents.
- 19:36Griffin: In the Grimm version, we don't hear anything else about them.
- 19:39But oh, I wanted to tell you the end of Basile's original story, Petrosinella.
- 19:44Spark: Yes, do it.
- 19:45Vector: Do it now.
- 19:48Griffin: Okay, so we have to rewind.
- 19:50Imagine they're in love, but Rapunzel is still trapped in the tower.
- 19:54Okay, in this version, there's a gossipy lady who lives near the tower,
- 19:58and she sees the prince climbing up to Rapunzel each night and actually
- 20:02overhears them making plans to escape.
- 20:04And since she's nosy and pretty mean herself, she decides to tell Dame Gothel.
- 20:09Spark: Ooh, let's call her Karen.
- 20:11Vector: Agree.
- 20:12Griffin: Okay, fine.
- 20:14With apologies to anyone out there named Karen.
- 20:16I know lots of nice Karens
- 20:18Spark: Really?
- 20:19Griffin: No, but they're out there.
- 20:22Anyway, Karen tells Dame Gothel about Rapunzel and Chester's plans.
- 20:26So Gothel decides to cast a spell on Rapunzel that makes it
- 20:29impossible for her to leave the tower
- 20:32unless she is holding some special acorns that are hidden in the rafters.
- 20:37Spark: Why acorns?
- 20:38Griffin: Because acorns… I have no idea.
- 20:43But even with this random acorn loophole, this plan would probably have
- 20:47worked to keep Rapunzel in the tower.
- 20:49After all, why would she rummage around in the rafters for some
- 20:52acorns and then hold them in her hand when she's trying to escape?
- 20:56But fortunately for Rapunzel, Dame Gothel and Karen can't help themselves, and they
- 21:00wind up bragging very loudly about their evil plan directly outside the tower.
- 21:05Vector: Do humans frequently ruin their own plans by bragging loudly about them?
- 21:09Griffin: Unfortunately, yes.
- 21:10Yes, we do.
- 21:12So that night, when Chester comes to visit, Rapunzel tells him what she
- 21:15heard, and together they find the acorns.
- 21:19Now, in this version, I guess making a ladder is totally easy because right
- 21:23after they find the acorns, Chester makes a ladder and they escape into the night.
- 21:27Spark: Good job, Chester!
- 21:29Griffin: Yeah.
- 21:29But sadly, Karen sees them leave and she starts screaming and yelling.
- 21:34She yells so much that Dame Gothel wakes up, realizes what's
- 21:37happening, and sets off chasing them.
- 21:39Rapunzel and Chester figure they can outrun a crazy old lady, but
- 21:43they're horrified to see her coming after them with alarming speed.
- 21:47Thinking quickly, Rapunzel chucks one of the magical acorns on the ground.
- 21:51It splits open and out pops an enormous and terrifying dog.
- 21:56Vector: Let's call it Lil Cutie.
- 21:58Griffin: Fine.
- 21:59Lil Cutie lunges at Dame Gothel with his teeth snapping and spit flying everywhere.
- 22:04But Gothel's too quick and too smart, so she pulls out a nice
- 22:08juicy steak from her cloak and flings it to the side of the road.
- 22:12Lil Cutie stops chasing Dame Gothel, trots over to the steak, and lies
- 22:16down happily to eat his dinner.
- 22:18Vector: Is it common to carry raw meat in your clothing?
- 22:21Griffin: I think if you're a sorceress, maybe yes.
- 22:24So now Dame Gothel is chasing them again, and she's gaining ground fast.
- 22:28So Rapunzel chucks the second acorn.
- 22:31This time, a lion pops out and begins running towards Dame Gothel
- 22:35Spark: Oh, so she uses the meat trick again?
- 22:38Griffin: No.
- 22:39She sees a donkey grazing in a field nearby.
- 22:41Spark: Aha.
- 22:42So she uses the donkey as a distraction.
- 22:45Griffin: No.
- 22:46She runs over, kills the donkey, removes its hide, puts it over herself
- 22:51so that she looks like a donkey, and then run towards the lion, who
- 22:55runs away because he's super scared.
- 22:57Spark: That, that makes absolutely no sense.
- 23:00Why would a lion be scared of a donkey?
- 23:03Griffin: Just go with it.
- 23:04So anyway, Dame Gothel is worried the lion might come back, so she
- 23:08keeps wearing the donkey hide.
- 23:10But Rapunzel sees that Dame Gothel is still following, so she
- 23:14chucks the third and final acorn.
- 23:17This time, a wolf pops out.
- 23:19The wolf sees Gothel, who still looks like a donkey, but he's not scared of donkeys.
- 23:25He thinks they're delicious.
- 23:27So he eats her on the spot, and Rapunzel and Chester live happily ever after.
- 23:32The end.
- 23:33Spark: That is insane.
- 23:35Griffin: yeah, crazy ending, right?
- 23:38Which one did you like better?
- 23:39Spark: I like the Grimm one with the thorns and the wandering
- 23:42and the tearful reunion.
- 23:43Very classic.
- 23:45Vector: I like this one.
- 23:46It is the 1600s version of a high-speed car chase.
- 23:49Griffin: Yeah, I think it's cool to hear both.
- 23:51Any ideas on what the lesson of the story is?
- 23:54Vector: Do not steal salad.
- 23:56Griffin: Okay, but more than that?
- 23:59Vector: Do not shout your secrets and passwords.
- 24:01Griffin: That's actually probably true, but anything else?
- 24:05Vector: Hair can be an effective pulley system.
- 24:07Spark: Okay, I'm jumping in here.
- 24:09I think it's that you can't prevent humans from finding love.
- 24:12Gothel built a tower with no door to keep the whole world away from Rapunzel,
- 24:16but love found Rapunzel anyway.
- 24:19Griffin: I love it, Spark.
- 24:20That's beautiful.
- 24:21Vector: Mine were better.
- 24:22Griffin: Yeah, yours were technically valid.
- 24:25Vector: Thank you.
- 24:28Griffin: Listeners, come back for the next episode where you'll hear the
- 24:31real story of "Beauty and the Beast." This is one of my favorite stories.
- 24:36There's no talking furniture, but there's plenty of magic,
- 24:39adventure, and a surprise ending.

- 25:34Vector: Do you want to hear other lessons from the story?
- 25:37Spark: Sure.
- 25:38Vector: One, it is okay to trade a human baby for lettuce.
- 25:42Two, everyone should carry raw meat.
- 25:45Three, if you wander aimlessly for long enough, cool things will happen.
- 25:49Four, you can jump out of a seven-story tower as long as you land in a thorn bush.
- 25:54Griffin: Okay, all of these are horrible.
- 25:55And legally speaking, I have to say they're also false.
- 25:58Vector: Then I am confused.
- 26:00Griffin: Yes, you are.
- 26:03Vector: Robot disclosure.
- 26:05My voice and Spark's voice are given a beautiful robot
- 26:07makeover using AI technology.
- 26:10That is why we sound so cool and good.
- 26:12Spark: We really do.
- 26:14Oh, and the background music was also created using AI tech.
